R
emember, remember the 5th of November… how many of you celebrate the infamous “Bonfire Night” or “Guy Fawkes Night” as tradition from the place you call home? Though it’s not a big part of the culture here, November brings with it more creativity that the Bahrain community thrives on. At FACT, we're all about supporting local talent and this month I got to catch up with Sara Rajab. If you picked up this issue of FACT for the very nostaligia-inspired retro cover, it’s the Arts Spotlight on p40 that you need to read. Just one more talented young lady harnessing her love of digital art through vibrant portraits that channel the pop art movement to its core. You can even contact Sara on Instagram – the main platform used for sharing her artwork – and request a drawing in a style that suits your character, for as little as BD5 – a side hustle that truly pays off for the artist and the audience. We can't go into November without our annual round up of our favourite al fresco hotspots in town. And nobody is happier about the cool down than me. Sitting outside for a leisurely lunch or lazy dinner is one of the most beautiful things to take advantage of in the Bahrain winter. We've got outdoor casual dining, ladies night spots, poolside eats and more to get you excited about another great season (p27). This month, we're all about spotlighting the best in Bahrain. There are not one, not two, but five fabulous food features to whet your appetite. Head for an elegant afternoon tea at The Merchant House (p78), an inspiring colourful lunch at Florence & Dar Zowayed (p81), evening chills at Via Brasil (p85), a magical experience at Lagoon Floating Restaurant (p89), and last but by no means least a seafood feast at Waves (p93). Plus, the best foodie deals for November are hand-picked for your dining pleasure. Fashion, tech, travel, motoring and the most prominent society news is all jam-packed into an issue that is bursting with creative pride. As we head into the festive season and I press play on Jingle Bell Rock, it’s hard to believe that 2020 is just around the corner. In true Bahrain spirit, let’s make the most of the month ahead and keep living our best lives. See you in 30.☺

START SOMETHING WITH CAREEM Careem has launched a global campaign that communicates its new positioning and reinforces its brand purpose, with an empowering message: “Start Something”. START SOMETHING is an invitation for everyone, with no exception, to move forward, to take that very first step and to believe, because nothing ever happens by standing still… The integrated campaign kicks-off with an emotional film that showcases people from different parts of our region, starting something to make a difference. A young girl following her true passion, a Jordanian family taking a step to create an inclusive community, an athlete dedicated to making his country proud, a Palestinian man believing in the impossible, a refugee with ambitions to never give up, a little boy nurturing his imagination, two young men believing in restoring the heritage of an old home, and an entrepreneur choosing to return home to Iraq and start something. Each daily life scenario portrays the brand’s purpose, encouraging each and every one to Start Something: start a conversation, start a journey, start a change. Because ‘You don’t have to be someone to start, you just have to start to be someone.’ “We’re really excited at the global launch of ‘Start Something’ for Careem which has been developed in close partnership with TBWA\RAAD. This campaign was twelve months in the making 16

UNDERWATER FUN Dive Bahrain, the world's largest underwater theme park spanning an area of 100,000m2, complete with a sunken Boeing 747, is now open to diving enthusiasts. The site, in close proximity to Bahrain International Airport, has a 70m-long decommissioned Boeing 747 as its centerpiece, the largest aircraft ever to be intentionally submerged. The worldclass project was developed in close cooperation between the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) and the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE). Dive Bahrain aims to provide visitors with the opportunity to enjoy a unique diving experience within a large area. In addition to the Boeing 747, the newly opened underwater theme park will feature a replica of a traditional Bahraini pearl merchant’s house, which is being overseen by Diyar Al Muharraq, artificial coral reefs and other sculptures that will be fabricated and submerged to provide a safe haven for coral reef growth and to ensure a sustainable habitat for marine life. The eco-friendly park will also provide researchers a rich source of information on marine ecologies, and will enhance environmental awareness on the importance of preserving marine life. The theme park forms part of the BTEA’s strategy of boosting 26

tourism and further promoting this vital sector by making greater use of the Kingdom’s natural assets. The park is expected to attract global recognition and become an international tourist attraction, given its size and location as well as the unique experience it will offer to both tourists and diving enthusiasts. Since its successful submersion, professional divers from registered dive centres have conducted intermittent inspections of the aircraft to ensure the park’s safety to both professional and leisure divers. The eco-friendly project will see Bahrain emerge as a key player in the field of eco-tourism and marine wildlife preservation by incorporating international environmental standards.✤

Unlike other historical epics, what makes the film stand out is its spirituality and imagination. Haunted by the memory of watching her sisters taken away and sold, Harriet is unable to enjoy her freedom alone and decides to go back South and free her family. R&B/SOUL
Love and Compromise By Mahalia
Coming at us with a gorgeous blend of intoxicating vocals and relatable lyrics, Mahalia’s latest offering is enough to cement her position as more than an upand-coming star in the mainstream music world. Technically her second album, Love and Compromise is being pushed as her debut record – and we are here for it. Having created her own unique brand of soulful R&B, the singer has been slaying us with her mermerising sound and she’s just getting started. Bringing her signature R&B sound to the fore, Square 1 humorously talks about going back into a relationship that didn’t work out the first time. Beautifully fusing gospel-backing vocals with neo-soul piano riffs, the addictive tune is enough to drive your heartbreak away. Driven by heartbreak, the British songstress’ inspiring soundtrack is the gift we never knew we needed. What You Did featuring Ella Mai brings the two artists together to create an excellent masterpiece. A remarkable demonstration of their impressive voices, the singers tackle a cheating ex over ‘90’s instrumentals without overpowering each other. With incredibly honest lyrics and dazzling yet casual vibes shining through, Love and Compromise is an absolute winner. The breezy R&B and soulinfused album is officially our fall soundtrack! 40

Magdalene
By FKA Twigs
Blessing us with another hit soundtrack, FKA Twigs’ Magdalene reintroduces the singer into the musical realm like never before. Making her comeback after a four-year hiatus, the album is borne out of a time of solitude in the singer’s life. A song about going back home, Home With You is a track straight from the singer’s heart. The third single from her latest album, the alternating beat-heavy track features breathtaking piano balladry as she breaks free and embraces change. A melodious catalogue of all the lovers the singer has ever had, and all the lovers she’ll ever have, the album is delicate while also being beautifully defiant and strong. Cellophane a raw and vulnerable declaration of her deepest emotions is unlike anything we have ever heard from the artist. Toning down on her usual twitchy technical production to reveal her hyponotising voice, the song is brimming with complicated feelings and true emotions. Needless to say, FKA Twigs’ dramatic comeback has been a total triumph.
A senior at Topeka High School, Adam Gordon is a renowned debater and orator, expected to win a national championship before he heads to college, all while trying to pass off as a “real man” and the cool kid at school. His mother, Jane, is a famous feminist author, and his father, Jonathan, is a renowned expert at getting “lost boys” to open up. As Jane and Jonathan struggle with the challenge of raising a good son surrounded by a culture of toxic masculinity, the story beautifully shifts perspective and time periods to produce a truly enthralling narrative.

POP OF COLOUR The digital art movement has seen quite the evolution in the past decade and with the rise of social media, more talented individuals have a platform to share their work with the world. Bahrain-based Sara Rajab, who goes by the handle @popcorn.nose.art on Instagram, is one such artist utilising modern-day technology to hone and share her skills. Here, she talks to FACT’s Shabana Adam about her artistic style and growing a grassroots following…
I
n second grade, Sara Rajab drew a policeman for a homework project and her mother’s proud reaction sparked an artistic journey that has turned from a cool hobby into a bona fide side hustle. Creating digital art under the pseudonym @popcorn.nose.art (Sara’s best friend has always compared her nose to a perfect popcorn shape, hence the Instagram handle), the 24-year-old stumbled upon turning her drawings into life-like animations after she graduated. “I started to draw in my free time,” Sara recalls. “Then one of my friends told me to try digital art. After that day, I was amazed to learn how I could turn a simple sketch into a fascinating form of digital art just with one touch, anywhere and anytime I felt like it.” Digital Art encompasses a wide-range of work. In Sara’s case, her images are digitally-created reproductions of artworks that already exist in another form – she sketches in a book and translates these drawings onto the Stylus app. Sometimes, she draws directly onto the app, in pursuit of trying new things. You only need to take one look at Sara’s Instagram page to see the impact her artwork has made. Portraits of real people and pop culture characters appear in vibrant digital form, praised through hundreds of likes and comments. Everything from the lines to the vivid colours is in keeping with the Pop Art movement which utilises the imagery and techniques of consumerism and popular culture. Pop art was originally developed in the late 1950s as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism and flourished in the sixties and early seventies. Pop Art favoured figural imagery and 42
fact magazine
the reproduction of everyday objects, such as Campbell Soup cans, comic strips and advertisements. The movement eliminated distinctions between "good" and "bad" taste and between fine art and commercial art techniques. Sara takes requests from friends and followers as well as drawing some of her favourite celebrity icons such as Frank Ocean, Donald Glover, Jaden Smith and, more recent drawings depicting the late Hollywood actor Luke Perry as well as her take on the blockbuster hit, Joker. Sara is gripped by the artistic process. She loves to learn new techniques and change up her style when the drawing permits. “I make different art for everyone,” she explains. “Some people request cartoony, and some want super-hero style, it depends on each individual.” For the moment, Sara’s tools are simple; she uses her iPhone 7 and various apps including Stylus and, more recently, Procreate Pocket to create digital art. She hopes to upgrade this to an iPad and iPen soon. Unlike a traditional canvas and watercolour paintings, digital pieces carry their own flair and finesse. However, the practice of producing the art remains the same. For Sara, pondering on a finished artwork is part of her routine. “I know I’m almost done with my piece when I add the small details that make my art come to life, like dots or stars, or freckles” she tells us. “Sometimes, after I finish a piece, I leave it to sit for an hour or more, just to look back at it and make sure it is exactly how I want it to be.” There is no rush when it comes to digital art. Much like its conventional counterparts, Sara’s work is, simply, an outcome of modern-day creativity and passion. “The vision of the final piece keeps me consistent till the end,” Sara says. “What inspires my work is the people I share my art with. They give me really good feedback and it makes me want to do more.” Helping to dispel the idea that digital art is something of a casual pastime, and not to be taken seriously, Sara’s work is the perfect example of moving with the times.

• ARTS SPOTLIGHT “I have studied a little bit about what each colour can make you feel,” Sara shares. “So, I like to post art with these specific colors to grab people’s attention. Other times, I just pick a colour according to how I feel or what I think will look better with the main art piece.” Sara is forever grateful to the online world and the wider community in Bahrain for the love and support she has received so far – a testament to the country and its people for their encouragement and acceptance of all creative practices. “Most artists that I know in Bahrain are really supportive with my art and I can ask them anything in terms of getting advice,” she smiles. “The only challenge really is me challenging myself to improve.” With almost 4k followers on Instagram, Sara’s talent is proof that artistic boundaries are nonexistent in today’s social media landscape. Being able to share her art with such a wide audience online has been a blessing in disguise for Sara. “Social media has really helped me grow as an artist,” she says. “All the comments have been positive and I also get random messages from people telling me they like my work. Also, a lot of people share my art on their stories which has really helped me to grow my followers and also helped me to make some money from my skills,” she adds.

Two of the artists that Sara looks to for inspiration can be found on Instagram: @Bluesssatan and @By_nick – both with different styles. In fact, Sara’s advice for standing out in a market that is so saturated with talent is to find your own style. “Keep practicing and think about what your art would be according to your personality or if it was the other way around would you consider buying art from yourself,” Sara advices. “Also, don’t be afraid to try new things. Your art doesn’t have to look like other people’s art, draw what you want, and that’s what will make you a unique artist.” Sara’s artworks are also very family friendly, so people of all ages can visit her account on Instagram and request what they would like. Her future plans include designing stickers and t-shirts with her artwork, showing a penchant for entrepreneurial chase with what could well and truly be a fully-fledged merch line. And that is something we can definitely get behind! ✤ 46

What are some of the most challenging aspects of running an events company? The most challenging? Well when you run an events management company, you need to consider a lot of things. Working on a concept, designing, implementing, budgeting, staff and time management and not to mention the sleepless nights and restless off, and on top of it all is of course the Client Satisfaction. the most rewarding aspect not only for me but for the entire team. Share with us some of the most memorable events you've worked on and the feedback received from them... Five years in the market have been filled with good memories. I can say that since we have started, we managed to make every event worth remembering not only for us but for our clients as well. If I have to mention some in those years, they would be: BIC VIP Tower where we are the first one to have done the lighting of that Tower; Ta’a Al Shabab by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, working with them as a supplier with the AV; Celebrating with Porsche as they are considered as one of the best Car Launch every time in the Middle East. And the most recent launch that we did for the Cayenne Coupe where we had received high regards not only from the client but also from our audience; and Managing the Conferences of Euromoney from the first GCC Financial Forum last 2016 till present, the International Association of Fire Chiefs in The International Fire Operation Conference, the Learning Event of National Geographic which will be done in Saudi this year. Our team works hand in hand as one family and that makes everything easy to work with, that makes the memories when you have people who works with you as a family. What is coming up for the company in the near future - any future projects and goals you would like to achieve? We all want to be known as number 1, well that’s one of every person and company’s goal. And the same thing for us. To be one of the known events management company not only in Bahrain but in the Middle East or who knows maybe even traveling the world someday. And with that, sticking to our company’s mission. “Our mission is making every event created by us truly unique by incorporating our client’s distinctive vision and portraying a masterful balance of creativity and innovation with flawless precision and style.” Future projects that we are looking into would be more on innovations, more lights and lasers shows, more 3D mapping. We would like to keep Bahrain in the map as one of the many who does amazing and breath-taking Light shows. ✤

This month we were invited by Alpha Romeo Middle East to join them at “La Macchina del tempo – Museo Storico Alfa Romeo.” For those of you who don’t speak Italian, this translates to “The Time Machine – Alpha Romeo Historical Museum.” We of course accepted the generous offer and could not board the plane to Italy fast enough. Situated in Arese, just a few kilometres from the bustling Milan metropolitan area, this beautifully designed museum houses the most significant pieces in Alfa Romeo’s historic collection and can be described as the heart of a genuine brand centre. Boasting event venues, a Documentation Centre, a café, a bookshop, a showroom and a test drive track, we found the layout to be most impressive as it offers a flawless fusion of Alfa Romeo’s past, present and future. The building itself is covered by a red cantilever roofing that covers the entire extension of the facility, whilst inside the museum, all of the lights, words, signs and style present in the building’s layout accentuate the identifying features that belong to the Alfa Romeo DNA. The museum’s vehicle display exhibits no less than 69 different models, showcasing the history and 52

development of this iconic brand. These models include the very first A.L.F.A car, the 24 HP, the legendary Mile Miglia winners such as the 6C 1750 Gran Sport, the Gran Premio 159 “Alfetta 159” Formula 1 winner, the Giuliette iconic 1950s car and the Championship 33 TT 12. To be honest, we could hardly take it all in as we scuttled from one marvellous machine to the next. The essence of the brand has been condensed into three principles. Each of these principles have a floor of the museum dedicated to them. On the first floor, Timeline. This principle represents industrial continuity. Nineteen cars best representing the development of the brand can be found here, each accompanied by a multimedia information panel. Interactive systems allow for visitors to access more details about the history of each model revealing how the Alfa Romeo brand has been developed over the last 100 plus years. The second part of the exhibit, located on the ground floor is devoted to the principle Bellezza (beauty) that blends style with design. Featuring several themed areas, this floor focuses on the style of the major Italian coachbuilders. The third principle, Velocita (speed) focusses on technology and light weight. Located on the sub-ground floor, this is certainly the most exciting area of the exhibition. Here, Alfa Romero enthusiasts are introduced to the stars of Alfa Romeo’s major victories, including those from the epic competitions between the two world wars through to the début in F1 racing. Pictures, sounds and film footage exhibit the ten biggest triumphs in Alfa Romeo history. Although the official exhibition ends with a sensational fact magazine

• LUXURY TRAVEL finale: the “bolle emozionali” (emotional bubbles) where visitors get to experience 360° virtual reality film footage, as well as a full-immersion room where we sat in interactive armchairs and watched 4D films dedicated to the legendary successes of Alfa Romeo, our journey did not end there. We were most fortunate to be offered the opportunity to test drive the limited edition, 1954 Alfa Romeo Sport Spider! We could hardly believe our luck when we found ourselves sitting behind the wheel of this one of a kind legendary Alfa Romeo model, ready to tack on the museum’s beautifully designed 1km race track. When one dreams of a classic sports car experience, this has to be right up there with the greatest to be had. As soon as we put pressure on the pedal, we found ourselves surging forward at an exciting rate. This car features a two-door roadster type body and is powered by a petrol, 2 litre, double overhead camshaft, four-cylinder, front mounted engine that creates 103 kW of power at 6500 rpm. The open top feature of this vehicle added to the already exhilarating experience as the wind tugged at our hair and faces. This small car is exceptional fun to drive and as we neared its top speed of around 220km/h, we truly felt we were in automobile heaven. By the time we had completed our run, we were not ready to leave this amazing machine behind, but were hugely grateful to both Alfa Romeo Middle East and the museum itself for this once in a lifetime experience. ✤

T
he Volvo brand has developed a global reputation for being one of the safest and most comfortable automobile brands on the planet. This is due to their unwavering dedication to constantly improving aspects of their vehicles with each and every new offering. Producing cars since 1927, this Swedish born manufacturer has won more awards for safety and performance than most others could dream of. In fact, the Volvo XC90 is the most awarded luxury SUV of the century. When the terrific team at Motorcity invited us to test drive the 2019, new and improved Volvo XC90 T6, we jumped at the opportunity, knowing we were in for a treat. Our first impression of the XC90 was that it’s easy to see why it’s the company’s top-of-the-line, flagship motor vehicle. This refreshed model offers subtle upgrades to the original exterior design. Its shapely body comprises of clean lines that flow from one end of the vehicle to the other. The bold and aggressive shape of the frontend is led by the redesigned grille and Volvo Iron Mark, along with the iconic “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlight design. The rear exhibits an integrated spoiler, signature taillights and chrome surround exhaust tips, whilst new wheels add to the vehicle’s solid looking stance. Upon commencing our interior inspection, the ample space on offer was the first feature to capture our attention. This threerow, seven-seater SUV is Volvo’s largest and there is plenty of head, hip, leg and head room for all occupants, in each row. The boot offers a sizeable area for transporting goods that is increased substantially when the back row of seats is laid flat. The layout upfront provides a calm and balanced environment as would be expected of Scandinavian design. A harmonious blend of topquality materials including wood, crystal and metal give the cabin area a feel of sophisticated modern luxury. The XC90 houses the Volvo connectivity and infotainment system called Sensus that delivers an intuitive, 9-inch, highly responsive touch screen interface that combines car functions, navigation, connected services and in-car entertainment applications including Spotify and Pandora. This user-friendly system, with its portrait-orientated touch screen, allows for fast and easy access to a host of functions and features. Smartphone integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is also available. All-in-all we found every aspect of the interior to be well designed, functional and attractive to the eye. Out on the roads, this revamped model continued to impress. The 2019 XC90 is powered by a 2.0 litre, 16-valve, supercharged and turbocharged, in-line, four-cylinder T6 AWD engine, complete with an integrated (SFI) ignition control system. This setup produces 310 horsepower at 5,700 rpm whilst developing 295-pound feet of torque from 2,200 to 4,500 rpm. This engine is partnered with an eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission that provides motive energy to all four wheels. This all translates to a high-performance motor vehicle with a decent turn of speed. With a great braking system, decent suspension and plenty of grip on the corners, the kilometres rolled quietly by as we lapped up the experience of this quiet, and comfortable cocoon. Volvo still lead the field as far as safety features are concerned and have the vision that no one will be killed or seriously injured in a 62

new Volvo Car by 2020. This is a bold goal indeed, however the safety package found in the XC90 makes this car one of the safest ever constructed. All of the brand’s models house Volvo’s City Safety technology that combines automatic braking functionality and collision avoidance systems to cover a range of potential accident scenarios. City Safety is the only system on the market that detects pedestrians, cyclists as well as large animals. Worldfirst safety technologies belonging to Volvo include a run-off road protection package and an auto brake at intersection capability. Further safety properties include the Second-Generation Pilot Assist, Queue Assist, as well as an array of Park Assist features. Anyone entering one of these vehicles can do so confident in the fact that they are travelling in one of the most carefully designed motor vehicles in the world. We highly recommend this luxury SUV to any and all looking for a functional, comfortable and above all safe new vehicle. ✤

THE ULTIMATE RESCUE When you have to look and feel your best with a beauty overhaul, it really is a no brainer. FACT’s Jayne Green welcomes you to Gloss Salon & Spa…
W
alking into Gloss Salon is like finding your own little secret – it’s hidden enough to be enjoyed with a feeling of exclusivity, yet it’s such a great find that you want to boast about everything it offers in the hope of gaining some real bragging rights amongst your nearest and dearest girlfriends. The whole vibe of the hair and beauty salon-cum-spa is a very welcoming one. Varied tones and textures are used to make the venue homely and inviting. From the tables to the shelves, comfy cushioned couches and even the cabinets, all are hand-chosen by the owner, adding a very contemporary drift between the different rooms. First and foremost, the staff at Gloss are really of a special class. They’re friendly and very accommodating – offering up warm smiles, hellos and numerous hot and cold drinks’ choices throughout our afternoon spent there, not to forget that they exclusively stock NOMAD Urban Eatery’s coffee blend. Now, Gloss Salon & Spa would be best described as a one-stop shop for ALL your beauty and relaxation needs. We’re not exaggerating; this place has the most gorgeous nail therapies, innovative hair treatments, and all the expected spa wonders that you would easily pay through the roof for, at a 5-star hotel. If there’s one thing that Gloss has really nailed, it’s the concept of bringing women together for a purely blissful time where grooming is at the forefront. Imagine our excitement when we’re told to get comfy for a fresh manicure. Our nail technician is a warm soul. We get a professional yet attentive attitude from her. Her technique was nothing short of magic and she was very thorough which is something we find difficult to find in a manicure nowadays. Natural, clean and neat nails… finally! Next up, we were treated to one of the most down-right brilliant hair experiences. My stylist for the afternoon was May. Warm, charismatic and with enough cheeky banter to keep me from falling into a relaxation-induced slumber, she set about transforming my frazzled barnet into creamy glossy locks with an attentiveness unmatched by any other salon we’ve been to. My hair had previously been dip-dyed and was looking tired to say the least. After careful questioning about hair rituals, likes, and dislikes we settled on a root ‘touch-up’ where lashings of grey strands had started to form. May is undoubtedly a magician as she started to employ a series of techniques to allow for optimum coverage. Once washed off, and a beautiful blow dry later, my tresses are the most luscious they have been in a very long time. The kind of hair you’d give an arm for – proof that the team at Gloss knows exactly how to execute their services well and deliver the desired results. Perfection. What we loved most about all the treatments and interaction with the staff was that there were no moments of pressure – you felt like you were part of their family. What makes Gloss Salon & Spa stand out? It’s the fact that there’s no gimmicks. What you see is what you get: a place to go for your nails, hair, body treatments, a catch-up with your girlies and, most importantly, impeccable service. It’s not a 5-star hotel – but it isn’t trying to be. It has a unique and believable charm with a genuine sense of luxury, where therapists and staff are evidently hired based on their skills and manners – something that many big wellness venues should take note of. After all, there’s nothing better than finding your very own neighbourhood beauty spot that REALLY does it all, and does it so, so well. ✤

TEA FOR TWO THE MERCHANT HOUSE T LURED US BACK TO INDULGE IN THEIR UNIQUE OFFERING OF AFTERNOON T INSPIRED BY THE SILK ROUTE STORY OF BAHRAIN. FACT’S JAYNE GREEN TAKES A SEAT…
T
he Merchant House may seem understated as you approach it, but this is part of the charm and excitement surrounding this unique residence. I hesitate to use the term hotel or lodging as it is so much more than this. There is nothing uniform, or regular, sterile or consistent about it apart from the unwavering service and attention-to-detail and quality. It doesn’t wear the hallmarks of a brand in the way that so many hotels do. It is its own entity. As the name suggests it appears to all intents and purposes to be the lavish home of a Merchant or Trader harking back to the Manama of many years ago when it was a trading hub, bustling with goods, merchants and traders and a melting pot of global cultures. The lobby lounge and Café Gray appear to be a series of drawing rooms and libraries with armchairs upholstered with a variety of textures and colours. Every single piece is a statement. Be it the geometric tiled tables or the vivid floral print arm chairs. The décor is the perfect symmetry of contemporary and classic. Both gentlemen in their morning suits and voguish hipsters would feel at home here. The frescos, vast canvasses and graffiti art are beguiling. The spaces are flooded with light and are the perfect gallery` in which visitors can muse over each individual piece. Café Gray is amidst this and is just a few steps from the bustle of Bab al Bahrain and serves an extensive snack menu, however, The Library from Friday to Sunday boasts one of the most enticing Afternoon Teas in the whole of the Island. The practice of taking tea in the afternoon in the Middle East came about as a result of the trade routes which converged here and those from the west utilising products, such as tea, from the east. The Afternoon T menu is a balance of dishes and flavours from Europe, the Far East and Middle East. The presentation is traditional with a series of tiers each displaying savoury and sweet morsels which are delicate enough not to require cutlery. The Earl of Sandwich takes credit for the ‘eureka!’ moment where he suggested that two slices of bread could house a variety of fillings. In 1840 Anna, The Duchess of Bedford, began a trend which bridged the gap between lunch and late dinners. The Earl’s creation became the staple of the Afternoon Tea. At the Merchant House tradition is enrobed in modernity. Cucumber sandwiches are awakened with lashings of cream cheese with mint and Roast Chicken is given a Mediterranean hug in the form of basil infused mayonnaise. Delicately smoked Salmon is twinned with Asparagus and dill to give a Northern European twist.

Delve a little deeper and you will discover hidden depths to the array of sweet treats. Rahash sits richly alongside indulgent chocolate truffles and moist banana bread. Halva, bananas and chocolate illustrating the plethora of exotic ingredients which would have passed through Bahrain. This theme extends to the Mini Yuzu, cheesecake and indulgently buttery and nutty pastries. The iconic Afternoon Tea trilogy of freshly baked scones, jam and clotted cream from Devonshire are not forgotten and represent the origins of the custom. Henry James famously quoted, “There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” We agree with this statement wholeheartedly however, we suggest you allow yourselves a little more than an hour to fully appreciate the ambience and offerings at The Library, The Merchant House. ✤

I
remember the first time I visited Florence, La Maison Meditérranéenne and the effect it had on me. Designed to mimic a Mediterranean country house with terracotta render and brilliant white shutters, Florence is beautiful in the truest sense of the word. A showstopping venue for any occasion or event, it is so unique and intriguing and the arrival of local Khaleeji cuisine Dar Zowayed has inspired change for the better. The philosophy behind the menu and the venue has always been based around the ancient Greek Agora or meeting place where families, friends and merchants would gather. This idea of a place to mix, mingle and meet within the heart of Adliya was the driving force behind the Florence and Dar Zowayed union. This unity has expanded the Mediterranean themed menu in an alluringly exotic sense combined with a rich blend of traditional spices - just like Grandma used to make! The dining areas have been transformed from bistro chic to contemporary Arabian splendour. Bold colours, filigree fretwork and Persian lanterns combined with a respectful nod to Florence’s Mediterranean inspiration. You should spend some time on The Terrace or in the Florence Garden enjoying the Al fresco dining opportunity. The Terrace and Florence’s Garden are designed to bring the inside out and vice versa. Geometric tiling, climbing shrubs and fairy lights make this space rather magical. It would be wrong to suggest that this was fusion food, too simplistic a description, but rather it draws the best from a multitude of styles and combines them to offer up a stunning range of impressive dishes that are mouth-wateringly delectable. Peter de Vries once said that ‘Some days Breakfast is the only thing worth getting up for’. He was obviously referring to the vast array of Arabic and Mediterranean offerings here at Florence and Dar Zowayed. Whatever your whim or wish I would be amazed if you couldn’t find it here. Breakfast platters offer the perfect savoury selection as do their sweet tooth offerings. Lunch and dinner menus reflect the same variety and quality. Tantalising appetisers such as Bahraini Red Lentil Soup, Fattoush and Halloumi Fries alongside lamb and pine nut pinwheels in the form of Arayes Kofta. I couldn’t mention the appetisers 82

without highlighting the Crispy Prawns and Calamari that is presented encased with finger licking cassava crumbs that will certainly have you ‘uhm-ing’ and ‘ah-ing’. An Italian staple such as pizza comes in its purest form but can also be loaded with Arabian lashings, including machboos rice. I was happy to see my Bahraini Tikka Salad adorning the menu with its mouthwatering black lemon marinated beef that dances with the fresh ingredients of the salad leaves. Now, there ain’t no party until cheese is involved and as far as I’m concerned, the Cheesy Florence Tower is a melting pot of… well, cheese but the kind that will have you lusting over it for weeks. Many of the stand out Florence main courses such as Filet Mignon with white bean ragout and peppercorn sauce or Seafood Rigatoni rub shoulders with the likes of their Machboos served with the option of Hammour or Prawns. Dar Zowayed’s Lamb Ghouzi is a beautifully aromatic parcel that you’ll be thankful for when it’s delivered on your table. Dishes are presented on an array of textured platters, woven, wooden and ceramic. Flourishes of colour and swipes of delicious purees further enhance the ambrosial quality of every dish. Now, anyone who knows me knows that I can’t leave without ordering dessert and the Nutella Bombs and Fried Cheesecake did not disappoint. These dishes in particular had us grabbing for our phones to take a boomerang as we injected the cornflake crumbed cheesecake with a couple of flavoured sauces. Leo Tolstoy once said that ‘The only Happy Marriages I know are arranged ones”. This could not be truer for the union between Florence and Dar Zowayed. Both bring so much which is different but equally delectable to the table creating a dining experience which is truly global and unparalleled. You now finally have the option to enjoy breakfast in The Meditteranean whilst also making it home in time for Khaleeji cuisine dinner - an ultimate sunrise to sunset culinary experience. ✤

estled on the 28th floor of the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Juffair, Via Brasil promises a magnificent South American culinary experience with a view. The restaurant travels across oceans and seas to bring Brazilian cuisine to the heart of Manama. Offering the best of Brazilian meat perfectly prepared at the hands of their brand new and talented Brazilian chef. Stepping in, you get tingled by the vibes of the vivid country. Copper pipes cruising the ceiling with lights and an abundance of artworks, street style, decorating the walls. A football painting adds excitement to the bar and makes the colourful drinks ever livelier. The Brazilian flag creates the perfect backdrop to the open kitchen, and the famous wonder of the world that is Christ the Redeemer, guards the colourful houses in a statement of hope and peace. A casual modern set up with simple wooden chairs suggests a friendly atmosphere and a relaxed dining experience. The dim lights pose the perfect ambiance for couples while a large group can enjoy a table for eight in the private room. Once happy with your table and ready to take off on your journey, you will let the waiters know by flipping a little wood piece looking like a sand clock to its green side. At this signal, the specialised waiter will start bringing the various cuts of premium meat lined skillfully on giant skewers. And, one after the other, equipped with knowledge and a very big knife, he grants you as many pieces of the savoury heaven as you wish, like small rewards of appreciation. Sirloin, tenderloin, rump... you name it, they’ve got it. Tender, juicy, succulent meat seasoned with passion and barbecued with love, so that every bite is like a little festival of pure richness. There is even a special menu that walks you through “How it Works”. A salad bar offers the perfect sides with a variety of Brazil's favourites such as the cabbage and pineapple slaw, potato mayo salad, or tangy beetroot salad with red onions. There is also a rainbow of cheese with crackers and jam that you may conclude your heroic meal with. The buffet offers few main course dishes as well. I liked the Carreteiro Rice made with jerked beef, onions and parsley alongside the Feijoada Stew made with black beans and a collection of meat including ribs and bacon. Bobo De Camarao is prawns in a special Brazilian sauce and it is equally delicious. You will receive an individual plate of Brazilian cheese balls, cassava fingers, and deep fried bananas at the beginning to replace the traditional bread basket. But don’t say no to the hot and cheesy garlic bread when the tempting skewer comes your way; it is beyond great! This buffet, to the surprise of many, does not include sweets! In fact, desserts come in a separate a la carte menu if you wish to skip the "all you can eat meat" option such as the rich Brazilian Flan, a firm and more condensed version of the well-known crème brulé, and Passion Fruit Mousse; a citrusy 86

white cloud of sweet dreams, the perfect ending to such a diverse meaty dinner expedition. But do not be discouraged, the grilled pineapples sprinkled in cinnamon sugar will give you the satisfaction of a Michelin Star dessert. After 8pm and all the way to midnight, Latino music played by the "First Class" Cuban band creates a celebratory atmosphere that will unleash your appetite even further. I cannot wait for the weather to cool down to go back to this venue at sunset, request a table on the terrace and the view is so great you won’t want to leave! With the amazing team at Via Brasil, you can now taste the best of the fantastic South American jewel; unlimited meat, salads, and skewered grilled pineapples, and do not forget to flip that wooden piece back to its red side when you’re feeling full and satisfied. What a fabulous experience! ✤

he scenery changes dramatically once you cross the beautifully designed bridge leading to a well secured gate. Appealing residences linked by charming streets cultivated amid the lush green. Finally, we are at the doors of Reef Clubhouse: a world of exceptional leisure in Bahrain. A charming lounge space with distinguished interior design. The welcoming front office staff checked us in with a simple registration and the manager shows up seconds later escorting us to the cosy marina dock. And there it was, Lagoon Moon Floating Restaurant, a swimmers-friendly beauty offering the ever-popular Lebanese cuisine with a twist. After a warm welcome by the restaurant manager, we settled indoors but the outdoor set-up is equally inviting now that the weather is finally right. Floor-toceiling glass walls please the eye with a panoramic view looking out at the mesmerising turquoise water and elegant beach. And you cannot ignore the three other structures floating around the restaurant; three innovative rentable lounges perfect for a day out with friends or family. A quick look over the offered set menu was enough to makes us feel hungrier than we already were, and it wasn’t long before we were gazing at a masterpiece plate of quinoa salad; a refreshing blend of black quinoa and pomegranate seeds on a bed of creamy avocado topped with nuts and diced fruits along some green leaves garnished with a flower of sweet mango. Simply refreshing! Next came a modern plate of cold shrimp and beetroot shavings laid on a slice of citrusy orange and fresh baby spinach leaves, a plate I would not normally order but was well enjoyed to the last bite. Lagoon Moon Fatteh is a modern presentation of the Lebanese traditional dish. Crunchy pita bread and fried eggplant cubes topped with garlic yogurt made fancy with pan fried shrimps. Now, this is my kind of dish. Packed with all the palate-pleasing flavours, I would definitely order this again. The main course had to be a plate of mix grill twinned with the most delicious green pesto hummous ever. Alongside this, the pistachio kofta is to die for - I will come back just for this! The drinks menu is humble but satisfying, the house made ice tea is great, and who doesn’t like fresh juices? Coffee and tea are also available. A sweet-ending is everybody's favourite conclusion to a great culinary experience, and in Lagoon Moon an ending will never be sweeter than with the amazing Usmalliyeh; two layers of crispy vermicelli-hugging cream cheese filling sprinkled with pistachio drizzled with silky syrup. What a treat?! With a happy belly and a lot of satisfaction, we found ourselves reaching the end of one of the best dining 90

ocated in the Diplomatic Area, Waves showcases itself as a convenient option for hotel guests and visitors alike. A granite bar and glass display among other Mediterranean-inspired details give off an air of class. Interior chairs upholstered in ocean-themed fabric and shell-shaped lighting fixtures make the décor seem all the more interesting. The most prominent pieces of décor would have to be the fish tanks, which are integrated in the columns and gives the kids something fun to look at. Patrons can have their desired seafood adventure and they have everything from shellfish to lobsters. Different species of fish are available and I highly recommend that you take your time to marvel at the vast array of delicacies. After selecting our seafood from the iced display, we were asked as to how we would like to cook the seafood. There are 10 styles to choose from including Harrah Beiruty, Balinese Curry to Bahraini Spices to name a few and the items were priced according to their weight which is a great addition to this fine dining restaurant. We ordered a couple of mocktails, my usual lemon and mint option alongside a fabulous strawberry concoction that the husband finished with impressive timing. Drinks aside, we started our culinary adventure with Avocado and Prawn Salad which was arguably the tastiest and freshest salad that I’ve had the pleasure to experience in Bahrain. Next up, we decided to indulge and ordered their Fisherman’s Soup which was full of freshly caught sea bounty and the epitome of hearty food. The tale of its origins come from age-old traditions when this meal was employed as a means to no waste from spoils of the day. For our salmon, we went for butter fried and the taste was like that of paradise. Each morsel proved really juicy and the texture was heavenly allowing us to indulge in its wonderful melt-in-your-mouth offerings. This fish in particular was very tender and the tantalising aroma from all the condiments used just made us keep coming back for more, in a rather primal state I may add. This is international cuisine at its very best with a strong focus on Mediterranean dining for an exciting twist on healthy delights, although we couldn’t help but order dessert, because, well, my sweet tooth made me do it. That, and the fact that Waves have a promotional offer that allows you to enjoy a starter and dessert complimentary when purchased with a main course was an added bonus for sure. Alas, we were not disappointed as a bubbling concoction of chocolate delight spotlighted itself as a masterpiece before me. Hot chocolate sauce was poured over vanilla ice-cream as it bathed itself over the home cooked brownie. The spectacle was not only pleasing to the eye but also a delight to our taste buds; an absolute must for chocoholics! As we waved goodbye to Waves it was a bittersweet moment that has provided us with the perfect excuse to visit again shortly. Amazing fresh produce, attentive staff and the feast of the senses all amplify this culinary adventure to its deserving heights. ✤ 94

New Mums, Listen Up! Pearl Wasif is an Advanced Physiotherapist Practitioner. She aims to provide evidencebased management to relieve pain and restore function and movement.
During pregnancy, our body gradually changes due to the increase in hormones. Therefore, keeping strong, flexible and maintaining an overall fitness is very important for your body. It can be difficult to squeeze in an exercise routine when you have your hands full with your baby. But what you need to remember is it took you 9 months to stretch into your pregnancy shape, you will need AT LEAST 9 months to feel things are going back in the right direction. So, here are a few tips on how to manage your time and slide in a few exercises whenever you can: Exercise when your baby is awake. When your baby is asleep that is the prime time for getting your head down yourself. Once they are fed and happy, get some music on and start your exercise routine. Eat plenty of fiber-rich food, go for walks, and use gentle stool softeners to avoid constipation. Avoid sit ups which tend to push everything ‘south’, and they won’t encourage your abdominals to pull back together again either. Get started with postpartum Kegel exercises as soon as you are able to. Raise your feet up while feeding. It’s a great tip for easing upper back pain. A final tip, think of pelvic floor muscle exercises as an investment for life. The sooner you start them the more benefit you will get in the long term. ✤

Body Image Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.
As a Personal Trainer, my role is to help my clients to achieve the goals they have set for themselves and teach them proper technique on how to execute exercises and give them advice on good nutrition. But, as any Personal Trainer knows, our role is much more than that. The psychological part of helping your client reach their goals is just as important as the physical one. The relationship between a trainer and their client is such an important one as when the client feels comfortable with you, they will open up to you about things they would never tell their family such as eating disorders like Bulimia or Body Dysmorphia or Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). Body Dysmorphia or Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a mental health condition where a person spends a lot of time worrying about flaws in their appearance. These flaws are often unnoticeable to others. People of any age can have BDD, but it's most common in teenagers and young adults. It affects both men and women. People who have bulimia go through periods where they eat a lot of food in a very short amount of time (binge eating) and then make themselves sick, use laxatives or do excessive exercise, or a combination of these, to try to stop themselves gaining weight. Personal Training is about supporting your client through their fitness journey and this includes their mental health and making them feel comfortable enough to ask for help. ✤

After a fun night out in town, it was almost a ritual between me and my friends to indulge in some greasy, but oh-sodelicious Chicken McNuggets before we decided to call it night. After my first real night out in Florida, I decided to do the same in order to seek some comfort in familiarity and to finally try out McDonald’s in its birthplace. While they looked much different than the nuggets I was used to from the get-go, I still decided to give them a try. Instead of the little pieces of heaven my taste buds were accustomed to, I was exposed to nuggets that were extremely salty and dry. Disappointed and still pretty hungry, I decided to save the night with a milkshake and make my way back home. Needless to say, I’ll be sticking to Chipotle! From little things like pumping your own gas and not being able to find actual hummus anywhere to literally doing everything on your own while going through MAJOR culture shock, change has been much harder than I thought it would be. While it hasn’t be all smooth sailing, going to Disney and amusing myself with all the Halloween happenings has definitely been my saving grace. The holiday decorations and festivities are on a whole another level in this part of the world, and it is unlike anything I have ever seen before. With my favourite time of the year fast approaching, I am brimming with excitement for a whole lotta Christmas and NYE-themed fun. Despite the hardships and lot of getting used to, I can finally say that this place is starting to feel like home. Slowly but surely it is getting better and I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything! ✤

Share with us some of your favourite cultural and dining hotspots in Bahrain and why these places are special to you… My go to spots here would be Block 338 in Adliya, my indoor cycling studio or the beach. I absolutely love food and am already dreaming of what to eat of dinner while I’m getting lunch so block 338 is perfect considering the number of cuisines that I get to experience in one spot. My indoor cycling studio, Ride Nation would be my second pick as it is one of the most positive spaces I know in Bahrain where everyone is accepted and welcomed in. The instructors, classes and people I’ve met there have

Careem’s most recent brand identity launch which is ‘Start Something’ is a message of inspiration, positivity and dreaming bigger and my efforts over the next few months will be to bring the new brand identity to life in Bahrain. I’m absolutely honoured to be working with Careem during this time as we finally have a brand from the Middle East that’s focused on telling a story and not to give too much away but we’re going to be telling a lot more stories in the foreseeable future.
