The Great Outdoors

“Dinner and a movie, forget that. I’d rather have a picnic and a waterfall.” — Amanda Grace

O

n a fine October morning, I woke up at my usual hour but it wasn’t as bright. It was partially cloudy and there was a nip in the air. I smiled to myself; winter is officially on its way! We’ve waited for this time of year, when the temperature drops and we can finally step into the great outdoors. In our cover

story, we bring you a selection of the most happening outdoor spaces and equally exciting al fresco dining offers. From poolside shenanigans to rooftop revelry and beachy adventures, there’s so much to watch out for. With the festive season approaching, it’s a good time to start planning your next vacation. If you’re looking out for new options, my colleague and I had the chance to explore the beautiful Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi – a cultural paradise. Read all about it in our travel pages. Speaking of culture, our own island is teaming with updates on the musical and literature front. We bring you the scoops in our Listen Up section. At the FACT office, we’re getting ready for Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights, and Thanksgiving, perhaps with one of the many sumptuous turkey spreads featured on our dining pages. As always, don’t miss our monthly updates on books, fashion, music and tech featured elsewhere in the magazine. Until next time!

Aerialist Ola

WHO RUNS THE WORLD? GIRLS! The Social Animal (TSA), Bahrain’s own boutique events collective with a difference, will host LUSH, a unique soirée led entirely by women artists and performers on November 10. Get ready for an evening of electronic music acts, DJs, dance performances and spoken word recitals, all of which will come together with visual art installations. The lineup includes singer-songwriter Maram, songwriter Layal Abbas, artist Jazmine Valco, DJ sets by Madam-G and Glitter**** and more! Aerialist Ola, from Saudi, will be taking part too. Reimagining ‘ladies’ nights’, the event will take place on November 10 starting at 8pm at the library at Wagalag, and offers female artists a dedicated platform where they can perform and share their talents. Maram, who’s performance will showcase her current interest of tribal fusion, says: “As an artist and a Bahraini woman, I’m sincerely proud to be part of LUSH, particularly paying homage to the women of the region and celebrating how far we’ve been able to come.” DJ Gwen Wregar, who goes by the stage name Madam-G, notes: “I see it as a fantastic opportunity to meet other artists and to have similar collaborations in the future. My contribution to this much anticipated evening will be some upbeat house tunes for everyone to dance to and enjoy.” 14

fact magazine

Our own Liz O’Reilly, who makes her DJ debut as Glitter**** (inspired by her sequined T-shirt), shares: “I’ll be playing loads of oldies but definitely goodies from the ‘80s and ‘90s and maybe even a few either side. So, if you remember dancing in a field at the birth of rave, this might be the place for you. This will also be my first official gig, so please be gentle with me. Many thanks TSA for keeping the faith!” Considering the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza, TSA will use LUSH as a platform to raise funds for the non-profit organisation Middle East Children’s Alliance. In the past, TSA has organised the micro fest Firefly and the Holithemed electronic music festival Holicorn. They also recently introduced their club nights Keep.It.Dirty or K.I.D. Tickets to LUSH are available on www.wagalag.com/events/ lush-by-the-social-animal ✤

THE FIRST OF MANY FIRSTS Bahrain Rugby has won Jordan Sevens, its first international tournament. The Kingdom’s national team, Bahrain Rugby, clinched the trophy, 34-7, in the final match against Jordan’s national team, in Amman. In the run up to the final, our boys defeated Kurdistan, 47-7, and Jordan Reserve, 37-0, emerging unbeaten in all the games. Jordan Sevens is their first international tournament appearance, following Bahrain’s acceptance as a member of Asia Rugby, the regional governing body for the game, last year. They will participate in Asia Rugby Sevens, which is set to be held in Doha from November 3 to 4. Commenting on the team’s stellar performance, Nader Shaheen, Bahrain Rugby Federation President, said: “By winning its inaugural international tournament, Bahrain’s national team firmly placed itself among the teams to watch for in the Middle East and Asia in general. I am delighted for the team whose commitment to training and fitness was demonstrated in its commanding performance against the other teams in Jordan. This victory underlines the quality and strength of rugby played in Bahrain and I look forward to seeing the national team win many more trophies in future. We are extremely proud of this achievement and the players’ devotion.” 16

fact magazine

Bahrain Rugby Federation (BRF) was established in February 2022 following the directives of His Royal Highness, Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, Chairman of the General Sports Authority and President of Bahrain Olympic Committee. Asia Rugby membership enables the Kingdom to have a national representative team in competitive and friendly matches against the other 35 member countries. BRF is committed to encouraging, promoting and developing the game in the Kingdom and contributing toward individuals’ physical and mental well-being through sports. It does this in coordination and cooperation with other sports establishments and authorities, within the parameters of local and international rules. It also aims to strengthen and develop global relations for the game to achieve optimum representation at home and abroad. ✤

WHODUNNIT? Watch out for this collection of crime-based short stories that features the works of former, longtime Bahrain residents. The Middle East is rightly dubbed the birthplace of storytelling. The art of sharing tales is intricately woven in Arab culture. In keeping with this legacy, the Crime Writers’ Association (CWA): Gulf Chapter has announced that it will release a short story anthology of crime writing talent, which is set to be showcased at the Emirates Literature Festival 2024. This is the first time, regionally and globally, that members of a CWA chapter are producing a book. Tentatively titled Arabian Noir, it’s curated and edited by Michael Lynes, historical crime author, Emirates Literature Festival winner and CWA Gulf Chapter convenor, and Alex Shaw, best-selling author of the Jack Tate, Aidan Snow & Sophie Racine thrillers and member of The International Thriller Writers organisation and the CWA. Long-time admirers of the Middle East, previously based in Doha and now in Dubai, both are keen to support and promote writing in the region. A unique platform for emerging and established writers to connect with readers through one of the world’s favourite genres, this compendium of crime showcases the works of authors from the Middle East, including Bahrain. Rohini Sunderam, a semi-retired advertising copywriter, moved to Canada earlier this year but is 18

fact magazine

still in touch with the local writing scene. In addition to publishing five books, her poems and short stories have appeared in other popular journals. Speaking about her contribution, she said: “The main character is Fatima, a Bahraini woman married to a Saudi man. The crime occurs when they travel from Bahrain to Najran via Hofuf. I don’t want to say too much about it but there are djinns and ghouls involved, as well as a very astute woman Detective Sergeant.” Glen Stansfield, who has published two crime novels and a cookbook and is currently seeking a publisher for a third crime novel, also appears in the anthology. He moved to Panama earlier this year but, like Rohini, continues to be an active part of Bahrain’s circle of writers. His contribution revolves around a rural farming community in mid-twentieth century United States that’s rocked by the murder of a potato farmer. He said: “The story gives an insight into life in rural Montana through the Great Depression and into the post-war years.”✤

DYSTOPIAN DANCE MELODIES Bahrain-based band OFFtrack have released their debut album ONSRA. An alternative-electronic band formed in 2019, OFFtrack came out with their first single, Too Dumb For Your Guns, almost two years ago. It focused on how war can destroy generations, not only physically but emotionally and mentally too, and was extremely well received among critics and fans. OFFtrack have now globally released ONSRA, their first EP. From the Boro language of North-Eastern India, Onsra refers to that bittersweet moment when you love for the last time or the realisation that love won't last. This is an album about love, hope, resignation, desperate optimism and also failing at all levels simultaneously. The tracks are inspired by personal experiences and hopes. The tone is dark and misty with vivid dance elements; a melancholic dance album for people who are too anxious to boogie, if you will. The album is written and composed by Sumit Sharma, who formed OFFtrack and handles the electronic arrangement, drums and synths for the band, with Sara Al Sayed’s arresting vocals, Sean Aaron's sinuous 20

guitars and Ryan James' baselines, which hold the grounds together. Xenai’s vocals feature on Inadequate and Vishnu Pillai’s on She. Influenced by the sound of post-punk crossed with Trip Hop classics, OFFtrack’s melodies can be described as coated in a dystopian mist, full of scattered drums with melodic bass lines, ear worm synths, intricate guitars and vocal melodies. Speaking about ONSRA, Sumit, who produced the album along with Vishnu Pillai, said: “It might make you cry, it might make you dance, it might be a warm hug in these testing times. Whatever it will be, it will live on like any art and music, because in the tough times of our lives, it was music that saved us.” ✤

POWER, PERFORMANCE AND PRACTICALITY FACT spent a day in the upgraded third-generation Porsche Cayenne S Coupé. fact magazine

W • ISLAND RIDES

e don’t hide the fact that we are huge fans of all things Porsche. After all, what’s not to love? This month, thanks to the team at Porsche Centre Bahrain, FACT had the opportunity to thoroughly inspect and test drive the fundamentally overhauled third-generation Cayenne S Coupé. Here’s what we discovered…

Refined Exterior Porsche’s quest to establish the new Cayenne range as the sportiest series in the mid-sized luxury SUV segment began with an updated exterior design. The moment we laid eyes on the coupé we were taken by the overall expressive appearance of this latest model. We took our time appreciating the contemporary design that is emphasised by a freshly configured front end. We found the sleek yet robust nature of the anterior to be complemented by the strongly arched wings, a dashing new bonnet and the bold black grille. Highlighting the SUV’s considerable width are the technically appealing Matrix LED headlights, equipped as standard on the refurbished models. Shifting our focus to the flanks, the athletic stance of the coupé became even more obvious, with its strong body lines and a sloping roofline that culminates in a neat roof spoiler. We found the chunky 22-inch GT Design wheels, painted in black, to further underscore the car’s sporty prowess, making us itch to get out onto the tarmac. To us, the most notable characteristics of the back end were the three-dimensionally designed taillights, the uncluttered surfaces beneath and the new rear apron housing an integrated number plate holder. The final flourish was the sports exhaust system, complete with twin dual sports tailpipes in silver, that provide an exclamation point to an already outstanding exterior.

Functional Interior Slipping inside the Cayenne we were welcomed by adaptive sports seats that we agreed were some of the most supportive, well-positioned and comfortable we have experienced in an SUV. These electric, 18-way adjustable seats provide a commanding position from which to view the road ahead and the perfect place from which we could appreciate the finer details of the driverorientated cockpit. Instantly apparent to us was the completely revised display and control concept that ensures all operations are fully optimised. All frequently used functions are located directly on or immediately next to the steering wheel. A prime example of this is the lever positioned on the left, behind the steering wheel, that now features additional functions for operating the driver assistance systems. Another example is the automatic transmission selector lever, now positioned on the dashboard, leaving more room in the centre console for storage compartments and a big air conditioning controller. Additionally, we found the large, easily accessible controls, combined with mechanical air conditioning switches and a haptic volume controller, to further enhance operability as well as to provide a refined look. We unanimously agreed that Porsche has achieved the perfect balance between digital and analogue elements. 44

fact magazine

Upgraded Infotainment & Tech Shifting our focus to the updated infotainment system, we were greatly impressed by each one of its components, starting with the fully digital 12.6-inch instrument cluster. This modern display sports a curved and free-standing design, along with variable display options. Secondly, we loved how the standard 12.3-inch central Porsche Communication Management (PCM) display is harmoniously integrated into the new dashboard and how easy it was for us to access all the relevant vehicle functions. Our test drive model also contained the optional head-up display, along with the optional 10.9-inch passenger display that provides performance data and separate access to the infotainment controls. A special foil has been fitted to ensure the driver is not distracted by the screen.

Proficient Power & Performance As previously mentioned, Porsche set out to create the sportiest offering in the mid-sized luxury SUV segment with their revamped third-generation Cayenne series. They accomplished this, in large part, by replacing the previous V6 engine with a refined four-litre V8 biturbo. Coupled with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, this monstrous power source generates a maximum output of 349kW and 600Nm of torque. This enables the new coupé to surge from 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds and to reach a top speed of 273km/h. As we effortlessly negotiated the roads around the Kingdom, we identified and appreciated many of the car's finest performance characteristics, the first of which was the suspension. Now equipped with the steel sprung suspension that includes Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), along with new shock

absorbers containing two-valve technology, we could feel how this translated to the smoothest of rides on all surface types and in all driving modes. It also provided us with complete control during our dynamic cornering tests. The pitch and roll support has also been noticeably improved.

Our Verdict Porsche have accomplished their goal of creating a seriously sporty SUV offering, one that is not only fully-loaded but very easy on the eye. ✤

BEHIND THE WHEEL •

Exterior This month, thanks to Motor City Bahrain, FACT had the opportunity to test drive the exciting new Peugeot 408 in the premium GT trim. We were instantly grabbed by its unique shape and bold design elements. Presenting a striking and unconventional form that showcases genuine originality from Peugeot – the car’s styling is a clear standout, as it manages to ingeniously place itself in that rare middle ground that combines aspects of a saloon and an SUV. At the front, the distinctive patterned grille is the same colour as the bodywork and blends in perfectly with the face. The eye-catching new Peugeot lion head emblem is placed right at the centre of the grille. While the new Matrix LED day running lights in the signature fang shape complete the gritty look. The model’s sharp and angular appearance continues on the sides all the way to the back drawing attention to its feline stance and unique allure. There are ‘cat ears’ at the roof spoiler that aren’t just an interesting design choice but also help direct the external airflow for optimum aerodynamics. While the sloping coupéstyle roofline adds a touch of elegance to the model. We took some time to admire the progressive three-claw LED taillights at the rear end, that add to the modern look. They sit above a chunky grey contrast bumper design that gives the model a sporty and aggressive stance. The Peugeot 408 rests solidly on 720mm diameter wheels and uses the iconic

looking Alloy Monolith Diamond-Cut, Matt Onyx Black, 20-inch rims that feature a disruptive geometric design guaranteed to catch your eye.

Interior On entering the vehicle, we were immediately impressed by the abundance of space on offer. The beautifully constructed interior is sure to satisfy both the driver as well as the passengers. The latest generation Peugeot i-Cockpit is quickly recognisable by its compact steering wheel dedicated to enhancing driving pleasure and controlled agility. It also offers top-quality ergonomics and technologies. The exceptional blend of premium detailing and sportiness is further accentuated in the GT trim with the multifunction leather and heated steering wheel, ambient cabin lighting, 3D XL digital cluster instrument and Alcantara front seats with heating and massage capabilities. The electric sliding sunroof greatly enhances the overall sense of spaciousness and brightness inside. The rear seats offer sufficient head, shoulder and leg room for three adults to travel comfortably over longer distances. As far as the internal storage goes, there are reasonably sized bins and large cupholders, along with a spacious cubby hole. While the luggage compartment offers 536 litres of space that’s big enough to store several suitcases and more. There are hands-free options for opening and closing the tailgate, including the power boot opening with foot sensor. fact magazine

• BEHIND THE WHEEL

Infotainment and Technology As we cruised along the highways and inner city streets, we had the opportunity to further explore other functions of the Peugeot i-Cockpit. The emphasis has been attentively placed on connectivity and latest technologies, which made the experience much more intuitive and rewarding. The 10-inch navigation display with a 3D effect is neatly incorporated into the dashboard, positioned slightly lower down and angled towards the driver for better viewing. While the infotainment system can be accessed through another 10-inch touchscreen and features a variety of responsive and user-friendly technologies. It comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features on hand, providing easy access to your favourite phone apps. Below the central display are the new fully configurable Peugeot i-Toggles offering quick and intuitive access to essential everyday functions which are completely customisable as per your preference, we found these shortcuts immensely helpful. The model also includes four USB-C ports and an exceptional six-speaker Hi-Fi audio system.

eight SRS airbags, active adaptive cruise control with speed limiter, active lane keep assist, active lane positioning assist, high beam assist, blind spot detection, extended traffic sign recognition, active emergency safety braking and rear cross traffic alert.

Our Verdict In our time behind the wheel of the new Peugeot 408, we were nothing short of thoroughly impressed especially with the model’s design originality that truly makes it stand out amongst rivals. Also, the immensely engaging drive and handling make the 408 a true winner. ✤

Power & Performance The new Peugeot 408 in the GT variation boasts a 1.6-litre, four cylinder, two-wheel drive, petrol engine. Paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, this motor enables the vehicle to generate an overall output of 215hp and 300Nm of torque allowing for a robust but smooth delivery of power. The smaller steering wheel and rapid response give the car an inherent feeling of agility, while also displaying exceptional stability. Peugeot has included three driving modes – Normal, Sport and Eco. We thoroughly enjoyed the Sport setting as it allowed for an excellent performance and a pleasurable journey, thanks to its fine handling even when the engine was pushed across the busy streets of Manama.

Safety & Assistance The Peugeot 408 features a comprehensive range of state-ofthe-art safety and assistance systems, that are fed information gathered by cameras and sensors, making driving, manoeuvring and travelling smoother and safer. The safety features include

BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED AND HIGHLY FUNCTIONAL Tech giants HUAWEI have released their new flagship smartwatch – the WATCH GT 4.

O

n detailed inspection of this new creation, FACT found it to be HUAWEI’s best-looking and most health-conscious smartwatch offering to date.

Look & Feel The HUAWEI GT 4 has deviated from the design language that defined previous generations by introducing inventive new elements. Coming in two sizes, the 41mm and the 46mm, these new devices look and feel like classic premium watches, unlike the many easily recognisable smartwatches available on the market. We appreciated the octagonal design of the 46mm option’s stainless-steel bezel that includes 24-hour indicators. This model boasts a 1.43-inch AMOLED colour screen with a resolution of 466 x 466 pixels and a density of 326PPI. The 41mm version adopts a pendant-like design that exudes an air of grace and sophistication. It features a 1.32-inch AMOLED colour screen with a resolution of 466 x 466 pixels and a density of 352PPI. The GT 4 comes with a range of options, colours and finishes, enabling the owner to personalise the watch’s appearance. The face itself has plenty of customisations, many of which we effortlessly downloaded via the HUAWEI app. Our model also featured a high-quality green composite rubber and cloth strap that was easily removable, making it simple to swap out for other options. Although solid in design, the 10.9mm thick device is light and comfortable while retaining the feel of a genuine, quality watch. We wore it for hours without really noticing it was there. Functionality & Connectivity We discovered the functionality of the smartwatch to be both fast and smooth. Besides the now-standard Bluetooth calls and reminders such as emails and social media messages, it supports 58

effortless compatibility and connectivity with both Android and iOS-powered devices. Health & Workouts HUAWEI’s classy new generation offering debuts the all-new Stay Fit app and upgraded GNSS tracking, all made better with the new TruSeen 5.5+ that brings AI-powered accuracy to health measurement. All this empowers and motivates the owner to achieve a better, fitter self. By utilising the smartwatch's LED sensors, PPG measures changes in blood volume and alerts users of irregular heartbeats using Pulse Wave Arrhythmia Analysis. The gadget also supports more than 100 sports modes and workout types and even monitors calorie consumption. Battery Life One of our top-rated features was the exceptional battery life. The battery can last up to 14 days on the 46mm and up to seven on the 41mm with essential use only. This length of time decreases to around two to four days with excessive usage. A wireless charging cradle is included in the package, allowing you to charge on the go. Our Verdict HUAWEI has outdone itself with the new WATCH GT 4. We strongly recommend anyone in the market looking for a highly functional, beautifully designed smartwatch, with a classic watch look and feel, to take a closer look. ✤ GO: VISIT HTTPS://CONSUMER.HUAWEI.COM/BH/ FOR MORE INFORMATION.

ULTRA SOUND Bose has unveiled the new QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds. Though over-ear headphones are great, their size can often become an inconvenience for many. Enter the new QuietComfort (QC) Ultra Earbuds, which replace the previous award-winning QC Earbuds II and offer breakthrough spatialised audio for more immersive listening. A standout feature of the new model is Bose’s Immersive Audio mode that’s been added alongside the standard ‘quiet’ (active noise cancellation) and ‘aware’ (transparency) modes. It goes beyond special effects and creates a wider, more spacious soundstage so the listening content becomes multi-dimensional and layered, regardless of the audio platform or device. With the support of dynamic microphone mixing and adaptive filters, the Ultra’s voice pickup is more intelligible in less-than-ideal environments. That’s achieved by technologies that work together in real time to determine and prioritise which microphone on each bud is experiencing the least wind noise and selecting from a variety of filters so the user's voice sounds clearer during calls. The Single-Bud Use feature lets users take calls and listen to music using just one bud. It will seamlessly switch between earbuds if

one of them runs out of battery or disconnects from Bluetooth. The design has also been refreshed to incorporate a cool new metallic treatment for a sleeker, more luxe look in two colours – black and White Smoke. The stability bands now feature an improved, interlocking fit on the buds to ensure they are mounted correctly, delivering optimal comfort and performance. Doing the most where it counts, the Ultra offers up to six hours of battery life on a single charge when Bose Immersive Audio is turned off, and up to four hours when turned on. A new optional wireless charging case cover is also available. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.BOSE.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

5 OVER 5 •

You have 30 years’ international experience in hospitality, including the Middle East. How, in your opinion, does culture influence operations in this sector? At Hilton, we strive to create an environment for all our guests and team members that is culturally diverse and offers inclusion to all. These distinct elements are essential in the hospitality industry. It is important for us to ensure everyone feels welcome and a sense of community within our properties. When you are operating a hotel in a country that has a distinct culture it is always important to be culturally sensitive to the destination you are welcomed into. Having had involvement with hotel openings, how easy or difficult has the journey to launching Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour been? Opening a flagship luxury hotel in Bahrain has been an exhilarating experience. It is an exciting time to be part of the tourism sector here as it moves from strength to strength. With many new developments and tourism initiatives in the pipeline in keeping with the Economic Vision 2030. We have been very grateful to have so much support from our owners, partners and suppliers, and the various government entities such as EDB (Economic Development Board), BTEA (Bahrain Tourism & Exhibitions Authority), Tamkeen and LMRA (Labour Market Regulatory Authority) to ensure we will be able to provide a new luxury experience in the Kingdom. What does a typical workday look like for you? Every day is different in a pre-opening hotel environment. When I am not in a hard hat and boots, I am spending my time onboarding,

building and training our new team members. I spend a lot of time with partners, suppliers and the community as well. We are always looking for ways to work with sustainability initiatives, as well as with the local community. For example: our hotel will have an LEED certification to ensure we are a sustainable building from the offset, and we will feature beautiful artworks from renowned Bahraini artists throughout the property. You moved to Bahrain for this new role. How has your experience of the island been so far? My family and I have loved moving to Bahrain. The laid-back, friendly and welcoming people here are like nothing I have experienced so far in the Middle East. We have already made so many great friends here. I can see why it is voted, every year, as one of the top worldwide expat destinations to live in. The food, the culture and the diversity have been a wonderful experience for us, and we feel very happy to be here in such a beautiful country. What do you like to do when you are not working – do you have a secret talent you can share with us? My secret talent would be that I believe in people. I have a great ability to cultivate the potential in others and enjoy watching people reach their goals. In my spare time, I am a foodie. I enjoy being with family and friends around good food and music. I am sure you will soon find me on the Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour rooftop, as we open the coolest venue on the island with our partners at SUSHISAMBA. With 360-degree views of the Manama and Bahrain Bay skyline, DJ beats, and a triculture Brazilian, Peruvian and sushi menu. ✤ fact magazine

ISLAND INSIDER

Pascal Etienne Complex Director of Food & Beverage, The Westin & Le Méridien City Centre Bahrain

You recently stepped into your new role. Please share the major highlights so far and immediate plans for the properties’ culinary offerings. This is obviously an exciting challenge as I have the privilege of managing two hotels with different brand standards. In addition to the fact that we are connected to City Centre Bahrain mall, the aim is to increase the reputation of our restaurants, especially the Spanish restaurant Salero, and increase the footfall through our restaurants. To do this, the service, atmosphere and 66

cuisine must be refined to create a unique experience for our customers. As someone who’s helmed kitchens at various well-known hospitality brands, in what way do you think guests’ dining expectations have evolved and what should hotels be doing to adapt? Above all, customers are looking for a global experience in terms of atmosphere, service, food or ambience. Sustainability has become a parameter for people these days. A personalised service will add an extra touch and

allow customers to become loyal. In addition, the authenticity of the offer is crucial in determining how we stand out in the market. Having lived in different countries in the region, how does Bahrain stand out for you? As a family man and a father, infrastructure, such as schools, hospitals and entertainment, plays an essential role. Bahrain is a welcoming, multicultural country with a high quality of life. I would say that we have the facilities of a metropolis with a rural lifestyle.

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

You’ve worked at various regional and international RitzCarlton properties. What about the brand stands out for you? I firmly believe in the brand’s strong team culture. As a Ritz-Carlton gentleman, I pride myself on cultivating a supportive and collaborative team environment. Our culture emphasises mutual respect, teamwork and a strong commitment to our core values which are legendary, gracious and inspiring. I joined The Ritz-Carlton, where I was given the opportunity to provide personalised service to our guests, creating memorable experiences and making a positive impact on their lives. In addition, being associated with such a prestigious brand is a source of pride and offers a sense of belonging to anyone aspiring to be part of the dynamic hospitality industry. Please share your vision for the culinary offerings at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. How do you plan on achieving it in the coming months? Culinary and food and beverage always go hand in hand and I am lucky that I joined at the same time as the director of the service team. Together, with our expertise, we will refresh, enhance and elevate the dining experiences of our guests through all our outlets and banqueting facilities. This will involve focusing on the quality of ingredients, proper presentation and unique flavour profiles to make sure that each dish tells a story and reflects the local culture and culinary traditions. We are currently working on a strategy that is tailored to The Ritz-Carlton's unique brand identity, target market and local surroundings. A big part of this will be creating collaborative

menus and special events to enhance the culinary offerings and provide guests with unforgettable gastronomic experiences. You have been extensively involved with hotel openings. What major learnings will you bring to your new role? Opening a new hotel requires developing comprehensive standard operating procedures for the culinary department. This includes menu planning, kitchen organisation, staffing protocols, quality control measures and safety guidelines. Sharing the experience with my team here at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain allows me to ensure seamless organisation and smooth operations. Maintaining quality and consistency is also one of the few things that I want to impart to my team. It is also worth noting that seeking feedback from guests and other team members is very important, and refining our culinary operations to ensure ongoing success. How did you come up with your signature dish. Which restaurant will it be served at? Like any other chef around the world, I draw inspiration from my heritage and family recipes. The Cheesecake Next Level is an adaptation of my grandma’s recipe which personally evokes nostalgic and comforting childhood memories. To make the dish unique and stand out as a signature creation, I have added a secret ingredient that a lot of people find very surprising to know. It also involves incorporating unexpected flavours or textures to enhance the overall presentation and taste. This delectable dessert is now available every Friday at our Mystical Brunch at La Med, and soon-to-launch at The Ritz Gourmet Lounge. ✤ fact magazine

I

t’s been a while since I visited this hot spot in the heart of Adliya and there have certainly been some changes. What once was the smoking area is now the funky ORO Lounge and Günaydin itself has just installed a lovely outdoor dining area with twinkling lights and greenery that I can’t wait to visit once the temperatures drop a little more. Inside, the décor is classic with twists. Chandeliers come in shades of glowing red, a fun spider-style lamp emits a muted glow and a wall of windows allows plenty of natural light to enter while comfy velvet-clad seating invites you to linger over numerous sharing plates. Inside the door a cabinet displays the dry aged meats for which the restaurant is, rightly, famed and an open kitchen allows a glimpse of the culinary magic in progress. We take our seats at a table laid with crisp white linens and black/gray ceramics brought from Türkiye, and the Turkish bread definitely makes a dramatic entrance. Puffed up and tiger patterned, it is a sight to behold. And, liberally sprinkled with sesame seeds, it’s the perfect accompaniment to the array of mezzes that soon arrives at our table. Our hosts are generous and the selection is versatile. I love the very nature of mezze, where you can try a little (or a lot) of multiple dishes – it’s a great way to learn about regional flavours and find your particular favourites. For me, that favourite is almost always going to be something with eggplant. So, it’s no surprise that I’m immediately attracted to the Atom, which is sun-dried spicy Turkish chilli with butter sauce on garlic- and eggplant-infused strained yoghurt. Initially cool and flavoursome, don’t be fooled, the gentle yoghurt creaminess gives way to an intense chilli hit that leaves a satisfying heat on the tongue. An eggplant sauce, loaded with potato and green peppers is another great option, the flavour mix perfectly teased by the sesame bread. And a spicy tomato dip with pepper and onions has all of us going back for more as does the Muhammara, which is another personal favourite. Deeply tomatoey with the crunch of crushed walnuts and the piquancy of garlic and spices it’s a satisfying blend of tastes and textures. I believe the ability to create a good hummus is always the test of a kitchen. The simplest things can sometimes be the most difficult, right? But, Gunaydin has it down to a fine art. Creamy and smooth while still decidedly moreish, it’s the type of bowl one could eat all afternoon and is a great foil to the other dishes on offer. Our mezzes are accompanied by two salads – the avocado bowl resplendent with vivid jewels of pomegranate and coated in a homemade avocado sauce. A special mention must go to the Tulum Salad which features Tulum cheese from Türkiye. A creamy, salty goat’s milk cheese that is ripened in a goatskin casing, the melt-on-the-tongue texture coupled with the unique flavour makes a huge and positive impression. The mains begin to arrive and I realise I have, in fact, landed in carnivore heaven. The Mixed Grill is huge with an array of meats prepared in several different ways. Adana kebabs, redolent with cumin, coriander and chilli, offer a well-considered, satisfying bite while small lamb cubes, steeped in spices, are a definite favourite on our table with everyone 72

commenting on their piquancy. I particularly love the lamb chops, their charred outer giving way to tender pink meat running with delicious juices, and the shish tawook (chicken) is a perfect example of the universal dish we all love, the yoghurt and spice marination having rendered the meat wonderfully succulent and bursting with flavour. In front of our table a chef puts on a show – literally flaming a large rib-eye in a spectacular display, the tongues of fire caressing the meat, cooking it to a flawless medium-rare. The chef then slices the flesh, its consistency that of butter, beautifully yielding while the fat is delicately browned and crispy. The mouth experience tells of the quality of the cut and we are momentarily silent. Next up is the Günaydin Special, the Lokum Beef Fillet, USDAcertified Angus exclusive to Günaydin. Served as small, thin medallions on a skillet with clarified butter and slices of toasted bread, this is my favourite dish so far. The savoury butter, salty, herby and rich, is so tempting that I cannot stop dipping the toast even as my knife is gliding through the excellent meat. Tender, gamey and slightly smoky, the flavour is strong and satisfying and I would return for this dish alone. To accompany the meats, we’re served pots of French fries. But these are no ordinary chips and are deserving of a mention all to themselves. With the skins partially left on and at least triple fried, a faint dusting of paprika gives a wonderful tanginess to go along with the crispy exterior and heavenly fluffy interior, rendering them potato perfection – I even take some home! By this stage, we are more than replete and we take some time

to enjoy a selection of mocktails as a digestive before turning on our dessert stomachs – you know, that weird phenomenon that means there’s always room for something sweet. From passion fruit with lime and basil leaves, to apple and cinnamon, and fresh grapefruit with rosemary and lemon – the drinks are imaginative and fun and, I’m heartened to hear, are all made with fresh whole ingredients, no syrups other than sugar. My favourite is both sharp and sweet, prettily pink with raspberries, pineapple and lemon – simply delicious. And so, to desserts. A waiter takes great delight in preparing the Simit Katmer – traditional phyllo dough filled with ground pistachio and folded into a roll around authentic Turkish ice cream that’s made in house. Oil from the nuts imparts a unique flavour to the dough, slightly earthy and excellently offset by the sweet creaminess of the ice cream. Another standout for me is the Kunafa, without which no visit to a Turkish restaurant would be complete. Thin, crisp, buttery phyllo and crunchy vermicelli soaked in sugar syrup encasing an inner of warm Hatay cheese, much loved for the stringy, melting quality that makes it ideal for this dish. My dining companion and I almost come to blows over the last spoonful, it really is that good. All the more reason for a return visit and I don’t doubt we’ll be back. ✤

efore I say anything else, let me put this out there – if there were one type of food that I could eat all my life, it would be pub grub. I think it’s because the dishes are comforting, moreish even, and there’s a relaxed yet high-spirited vibe attached to spaces that serve them. My companions and I headed to McGettigan’s Irish Pub on a weekday afternoon. It was just the pick-me-up we needed to power through until the weekend. The restaurant offers a modern Irish bar feel. There are TV screens airing matches and some sports-inspired décor. You can enjoy live musical entertainment by the resident band and DJ in the evening. The main seating area where the bar is has booth and barstool seating. There’s also a private dining area with some tables, which is where we sat. Our gastronomic adventure kicked off with the Warm Quinoa Salad. Now, a salad is not something you usually order at a place like this but this dish is an exception to the norm. It was a medley of fresh ingredients such as creamy avocado, sweet and acidic mango and cherry tomato, and earthy kale, all combined in a light citrus dressing. The temperature contrast between the quinoa and other ingredients made this dish a hit, not to forget the pop of pomegranate seeds every so often. Burrata, a straightforward creation of the creamiest cheese ever and red, yellow and green Heirloom tomato slices, was a saviour. It cut through the richness of the fare that was to follow. The pistachio slices offered a surprise bite and the balsamic glaze, sweet and tart, was irresistible. Our starters included Arancini Di Riso, light risotto balls cooked 76

with juicy wild mushroom. Delightful spheres with warm, gooey insides and a crunchy breaded exterior, they went perfectly well with the tangy tomato sauce they were sat on and the aromatic basil drizzle. We also ate Loaded Potato Skins with a Mexican twist. The filling included a subtly spiced, juicy Wagyu beef chilli topped with citrusy pico de gallo, a dollop of sour cream and aged cheddar. I liked the fusion of flavours, and the spud, seared on the edges and soft and mushy on the inside, offered the perfect stage. We asked the bar tender for a selection of drinks to wash down this moreish feast. My favourite was the grapefruit one – refreshing with sweet, sour and bitter notes. I decided to check out the outdoor dining area while we waited for our mains. This was my first time at McGettigan’s and I must say, they have a spacious, impressive al fresco set up – can’t wait for the temperature to drop! You can’t go to an Irish pub and not eat sausages! I was looking forward to trying their Bangers & Mash especially since my Irish colleague was impressed with this dish. She was right – I now know what the real deal tastes like! Savoury and meaty, they had so much flavour, which was further intensified by a really tasty gravy. The Colcannon mash – potatoes with greens – was a new one on me and it was buttery and fluffy like a cloud. The bar was raised high now but the smart people at McGettigan’s left their best for last. The 250gm Prime Rib-Eye was presented to us. Cooked to medium, it still had the juices flowing out of it. The protein, seasoned right, was succulent and delicious on its own but my Indian palate craved something more, which the salty, thick mushroom gravy satisfied. You could opt for peppercorn sauce or chimichurri too. The onion jam was the ‘icing on the steak’ – I mean, is there anything better than caramelised onions!

Served with a side of chunky chips, this dish was a hero. Adding a touch of variety was Prawn A La Plancha, linguini dressed with a silken parmesan and cream sauce and rendered flavourful by fresh prawns grilled to perfection. The rocket garnish was drizzled with premium truffle oil, which added a certain je ne sais quoi. We took breaks between our mains, sometimes to cleanse our palates with that creamy burrata and at other times to share some laughs as we sipped on our drinks. That’s what I love about spaces like McGettigan’s – you can unwind with loved ones over good food and drinks. Plus, the dishes are big enough to share. Our midweek indulgence ended on the sweet note that was Sticky Toffee Pudding. A moist, gooey square topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzled with the most decadent caramel sauce – the crunchy toffee bits were a pleasant surprise! I truly look forward to returning with my family and friends, perhaps for an evening experience with the live band. ✤

ntering Neyran restaurant, we were greeted by a man in traditional dress seated on cushions and offering us hot tea – made with Moroccan black chai and fresh mint leaves and served from a silver pot into small, vividly coloured glasses. It was delicious and I went back for several helpings before taking my seat. I was pleased to see Neyran had received something of a facelift (or perhaps a subtle tweak) and seemed much brighter than before. But the essentials were still there. The hewn metal lamps hanging from the ceiling and lighting up arch-shaped alcoves in sunshine-hued walls; earthenware plates, in the bright colours and geometric patterns for which Morocco is known the world over, adorning the walls. The new wrought iron seating, sturdy and well-proportioned but also stylish, decked out with cushions in the rainbow stripes of a winter djellaba. With the aroma of herbs and spices wafting forth, I was excited to explore the extensive buffet and couldn’t help but lift the lid on a series of gleaming tagines – their contents each more inviting than the last – before heading to the salad selection, which my dining companion declared a little piece of heaven for vegetarians and vegans. I must confess, we piled our plates high. I’m a particular fan of beetroot, add in some green herbs and cucumber and you have a really tasty, satisfying combination. Carrot Mosharmela with its flavours of cumin and garlic was a huge hit, the cumin gently bringing forth the sweetness of the crunchy carrots. I loved the Zaalouk, the rich tomato and eggplant dish in which paprika and fact magazine

herbs play delightfully with the earthiness of the fruits. Toasted olives, generously dusted with sesame seeds, were a revelation – I’ve never tried this dish before and the sharpness of the olives really cut through their usual slight oiliness for a full-flavoured bite. We accompanied our salads with msemmen bread – crispy, fluffy, layered and textured – slightly resembling a chapati. It was excellent and I grabbed another square to mop up my Harira Soup. This oh-so traditional recipe of lentils, chickpeas and tomatoes, robustly seasoned with ginger, pepper, cinnamon and fresh herbs, is literally a meal in itself and something you will find served in every Moroccan home, with good reason. Rich and zesty, it is the one dish that, perhaps, perfectly encapsulates Maghrebi food in one, delicious bowl. Next, we moved on to the mains and who could resist the call of the gleaming Ouzi tureen? Traditionally cooked in a fire pit, this dish speaks of centuries of history, of soaring deserts and Bedouin horsemen on the horizon. And, I can honestly say, it did not disappoint. The lamb was so tender, the chef was able to serve it using just a wooden spoon, the fibres literally falling apart. The meat, redolent with a secret mix of spices – pretty sure I detected nutmeg, cloves and cardamom – surrounded by veggies all long-steeped in the cooking juices. Perfection! Then it was time to revisit those gorgeous tagines. Aromatic rice with fish and seafood; Loubia, white bean stew; Green Lentil with Ras El Hanout spice mix. Liver Charmoula, chopped liver with onions, garlic and lemon; Lham bel Barkouk, meat cooked with spices and prunes; Couscous bel Lhem, featuring the traditional pearls of rolled semolina; and Taqaliya – which, Google informed, features parts of 80

the lamb I had no wish to sample – we were truly spoilt for choice. My companion chose the couscous, rude not to when dining Moroccan. It was cooked with meat but she decided to just take the semolina, veggies and juices. Piquant with a luscious blend of spices that bust on the tongue, the dish was everything she had hoped for and more. I went for the Chicken Tajine and, though, at this point, we had already eaten more than enough, the deliciously pungent aroma was enough to get my taste buds dancing. The meat was succulent and tender, the juices, redolent with the sweetness of honey and apricots, lending a delicate piquancy. Truly a perfect way to end the savoury part of our Moroccan feast. After a break for more of that wonderful Moroccan tea, which I was pleased to find is served with ceremony throughout the meal by ladies in traditional white djellabas, we headed to the dessert section where a vibrant selection of fresh fruits sat alongside all manner of authentic Arabic sweets. From Maamoul, the fluffy, date-filled cookies, to Briouat – mini triangles stuffed with marzipan and cinnamon – they were all there. I was particularly taken with the Chebakia, deep-fried golden cookies with honey and sesame seeds. These are usually prepared for special occasions since their preparation can be time consuming, so to find them on a brunch spread was very impressive, as was the inclusion of a date-filled biscuit made from semolina flour, its sweet filling and unusual texture lending something extra to the traditional selection. I cannot finish this review without mentioning the entertainment – after all, this is a big part of the brunch experience and we were

truly impressed. DJ AK set the tone with a mix of Moroccan and Arabic tunes which had both, us and our fellow diners clapping along and indulging in some vigorous chair dancing. Singer Mohammed accompanied himself on the electric keyboard for soulful renditions of traditional Arabic songs. But the pièce de résistance was the appearance of an energetic belly dancer. Twirling and shimmying, her long hair flying, the jewel-bright pink of her costume dazzling, she helped make this brunch an occasion to remember. If you’re looking for a brunch with a difference, I would highly recommend a trip to Neyran, where you’ll truly experience Moroccan hospitality, without the need for a plane ticket. ✤

’ve always known Abu Dhabi to be a cultural hub in the region and so, when I learned that I was headed there, I was thrilled. Saadiyat Island, which translates to island of happiness, is undergoing extensive development and is expected to become the state’s cultural centre. After a breezy flight, we were transferred to Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort, one of the six exclusive hotels and resorts on the island. I spotted residential complexes en route, many of which looked like something from the 1,001 Nights! The architecture here is breathtaking and unique. It wasn’t long before we reached the luxurious oasis that was to be our home for the next couple of days. The property is strategically located, 20 minutes from the airport and city centre, keeping transit time to a minimum.

A Natural Haven On entering the lobby, I was transported to an oceanic paradise. A glittering installation created from more than 100 droplets of hand-blown Bohemian crystals and reminiscent of the azure blue waters that surround the island stood out. In fact, all parts of the property have been designed to offer a seamless transition from the hotel to the adjoining natural haven, with dolphins that swim close to the shore in the wee hours of the morning to the sociable birds that join you for an al fresco breakfast. The sparrows aren’t the only ones with a friendly demeanor. Driven by a team of proactive, dutiful staff members, the service here is top-notch and personal. Everyone, from the lobby attendant to the manager, is warm and welcoming – a testament to generous Arabian hospitality. A painless check-in later, I headed to my Ocean Deluxe King Room, which offers breathtaking views of the award-winning beach. Saadiyat Island was recently crowned the Middle East’s Leading Beach Destination at the World Travel Awards for the 12th consecutive year. I had some time before we headed out for the first leg of our adventure so, I made myself a cup of coffee which I enjoyed on the cosy love chair – a circular sofa-like seat – on the balcony, but not before I explored a little. A fully stocked fridge, a Nespresso machine, a TV with local and international channels, complimentary wi-fi, a walk-in shower and separate bath… what more could I have asked for!

Arts & Culture Our generous hosts and the organisers of this eventful trip had planned an exciting day ahead. Our first destination, The Abrahamic Family House is a unique space with a mosque, church and synagogue under the same roof. Welcoming people of all faiths, it upholds peaceful coexistence and acceptance among different beliefs, nationalities and cultures – just like the UAE – home to people from all walks of life. Each of the houses of worship is symbolically designed; the crucifix in the church has a silhouette of Jesus and not a statue with a face because depicting God is forbidden in Islam and Judaism; the mosque’s roof 92

is reminiscent of the cave (of Hira) where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received his first revelation. Numbers such as three, five and seven, which hold significance in all three religions, are incorporated into the design. You need to be modestly dressed but there is a counter to borrow a coverup. It’s a soulful, interactive experience and, if you’re lucky, you might catch a wedding! There’s a gift shop too and a garden where you can relax. Manarat Al Saadiyat (MAS), a community centre, was next. Designed to host a variety of events from workshops in the amphitheatre and immersive exhibitions at their sprawling galleries to film screenings at Cine’MAS’ – their film fest – to art installations in the garden, this place has so much personality. The programme keeps changing so it’s best to check before you visit. There’s also an art studio that you could walk in and use for a nominal fee. Great to keep the kids busy for an hour or two! Of course, we couldn’t miss Louvre Abu Dhabi, which has a newly added canoe rental option perfect for the winter months. On our visit, we stuck to exploring the museum. I strongly recommend hiring a guide because this place is huge. Further, having someone knowledgeable (and passionate!) with us helped us understand the displays better. It’s a lot of walking so wear comfortable shoes and you can always unwind at the café later. The outdoor area, with the specially designed dome, is a wonder to behold. During the day, the sunlight passing through creates a beautiful pattern on the ground. Saadiyat Culture District, where these sites are located, Saadiyat Beach Club

is fast developing and tourists can expect a number of museums to open in the near future, such as Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum. The latter will have narrow glass atriums resembling the wing tips of a falcon – the UAE’s national bird.

Gastronomy Galore After a long and eventful day, we were glad to be returning to the hotel. Dinner was at Mare Mare, the Italian restaurant, which serves a modern spin on classics. We sat indoors but they have an outdoor area overlooking the beach, great for cooler days. Famished, we tucked into the starters. Fritto Misto, a selection of batter-fried seafood and vegetables, is a wonderful sharing dish. I recommend the Bruschetta Mista, a set of three sour dough slices topped with premium toppings and drizzled with the finest olive oil. We could taste it in every bite. I enjoyed the Spaghetti Alla Carbonara for main, with a glass of grape. It was creamy, complemented by the moreish saltiness of the bacon. The dining offerings at Jumeirah at Saadiyat are diverse. During our stay, we also ate at the Levantine restaurant. Tean, meaning fig in Arabic, serves some of the best grills I have ever eaten. The succulent and lightly spiced shish taouk and equally juicy lamb kofta went so well with the vermicelli rice – a light side dish that took on the flavours of the meat. I recommend the falafel, which was a hit with the vegans and carnivores at the table – crunchy on the outside, mushy on the inside – you know a restaurant is good when it gets the simple things right. On the second day, we dined at Beirut Sur Mer, at Mamsha Al Saadiyat, a vibrant beachfront venue. An extravagant Lebanese feast best describes our experience. There are other restaurants here, serving varied cuisines, from sushi to steaks. Day passes to the adjoining SOUL beach, that stretches for one kilometre, are available or you could enjoy a leisurely stroll along the promenade. The island’s beaches truly are the jewel in its crown. Determined to experience them, my companion and I headed to the hotel’s beach every morning. We followed it with a sumptuous breakfast, served at White which has a pearly, oyster-shell-inspired interior. I was thoroughly impressed with the variety on offer. There were so many stations including one just for avocado on toast! Every palate will find something here, Indian staples such as idli, English baked beans, American hashbrowns… Carb enthusiasts can explore a variety of Danish pastries and breads and those on the health wagon will find their solace in the beckoning fruit, cereal and muesli counters.

Fitness Fanatic Speaking of health, the island offers many options to stay active. Saadiyat Beach Golf Club is the Gulf’s first beachfront course. One of the highlights, for me, was spotting Arabian gazelles. The club is home to Hawksbill restaurant, the namesake of the turtle species that calls this island home. There’s a conservation programme to protect them too. fact magazine

Sustainability is at the heart of virtually every initiative on this natural island. Co-designed by golfing legend Gary Player, this 18hole championship course will challenge both pros and amateurs. Safe to say, my companions and I were the latter but thanks to our friendly and experienced instructor – he has been playing for over two decades – we learned the basics of the game and hit some decent shots too. Book a guided session on your next holiday – you won’t regret it! Saadiyat Beach Club is perfect for a day trip if you’re looking for a change of scene. The property has a collection of nice restaurants including La Salle Bistro where we dined. You can spend the mornings splashing in the temperaturecontrolled pool or relaxing on the loungers. There is a steam room, sauna, plunge pool and Jacuzzi too, and I’ve said enough about the beach. Day passes are available. My colleague, a fitness enthusiast, made the most of the facilities at Jumeirah at Saadiyat. A fully-equipped gym with machines and studios for yoga and other classes are available. There’s a dedicated ladies’ gym, as well as a private room where those who are body conscious can train – well done, Jumeirah! The wellness facilities are fitting for a five-star property such as this one. We were told that Spa, as it’s called, is the largest hammam spa in Abu Dhabi. With exclusive sections for male and female guests, it also offers couples' treatments, using some of the most luscious products ever, 111 Skin, Biologique Recherche and marocMaroc, to name a few. BIG SCREEN American Horror Story: Delicate Need to Know:

American Horror Stories is an anthology of horror television series. The latest – 12th – season revolves around an actress who wants to start a family despite concerns about its impact on her career. But she feels that something, or someone, is sabotaging her pursuit of motherhood.

Directors: Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk Cast: Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Denis O'Hare, Leslie

The movie is visually breathtaking in its depiction of a future world and the considered storyline asks an interesting question.”

The Creator Need to Know:

The movie is an American science fiction action thriller that’s set in the distant future amidst a war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence (AI). An ex-special-forces agent has been recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI, who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war by destroying mankind itself.

Director: Gareth Edwards Cast: John David Washington, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, Allison Janney

Grossman, Matt Czuchry, Kim Kardashian, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Cara Delevingne

Why Is It Worth Watching?

First premiered in 2011, the series has continued to grow in popularity with every season, especially since each instalment is a self-contained plot exploring a different horror subgenre. The show manages to incorporate elements that are rooted in real-life fears and anxieties, which makes it even more spine-chilling and unsettling. The latest season has been inspired by the thriller novel Delicate Condition by Danielle Valentine. Anna Victoria Alcott (Roberts) is undergoing another cycle of IVF and feels broken due to previous failed attempts, but is still determined to make it happen. Anna’s career is currently on the rise, and it’s been quite difficult trying to find the balance between work and personal life, to the point where she even pushes back a doctor’s appointment to do some press. Meanwhile, Anna’s crazed publicist friend Siobhan (Kardashian) is concerned about the former focusing on the ongoing Oscars campaign. Things start looking up when Anna finds out she’s finally pregnant but they take a turn for the unexpected. Further tragedy strikes when she suffers a heart-breaking miscarriage or at least that’s what they’ve all been telling her, but she can’t seem to shake off her haunting belief that her baby is still alive inside her.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The movie begins with a prologue showcasing the steady rise of AI. Humanity has been at peace and thriving thanks to AI robots that have been integrated into society. That’s until they detonate a nuclear warhead in Los Angeles, without a warning, killing millions. In response, the US and its Western allies pledge to eradicate AI from Earth in order to safeguard humanity. They eventually succeed with the exception of New Asia, a country whose people still live in harmony with AI. The US military launches an extensive campaign against them, mainly seeking to assassinate Nirmata aka the Creator. Sergeant Joshua Taylor (Washington) is recruited on a mission to find and destroy the deadly weapon. He’s shocked to learn that it is just a robotic child. After interacting with and understanding her powers, Taylor finds himself questioning everything including the mission – does he stay true or change his plans? The movie is visually breathtaking in its depiction of a future world and the considered storyline asks an interesting question that plays off a classic trope: will AI really become our final enemy or is it our fear that will ultimately cause the end?

POP

Javelin By Sufjan Stevens

Perfect Picture By Hannah Diamond

The tenth studio album by American musician Sufjan Stevens, Javelin, released via Asthmatic Kitty Records, is a tribute to the artist’s late partner. The opener Goodbye Evergreen sets the tone, with its sombre vibe which goes on to turn celebratory – it pays homage to a life that once was, with a choir – a recurring element throughout the album. The acoustic guitar on A Running Start complements the soft energy of the track in which Stevens seems to be asking his beloved to linger on a little longer, possibly drawing parallels between their presence and nature; “I see the light upon the lake/ The silver moon, the water snake”. The title track is intense and further delves into the theme – death. Once again, you will find Stevens thinking (read singing) aloud, his thoughts interwoven with stringsy melodies, forming a pattern against the “Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh” of the choir. Every song feels like a peek into the innermost corners of the singer and lover’s heart; unsaid words, angsty silences… however, hope floats. The closing track There’s A World revolves around the afterlife – a light at the end of the tunnel. If you’re looking for something to listen on a winter’s night, this one fits the bill.

British singer and visual artist Hannah Diamond has dropped her second studio album Perfect Picture via PC Music and it’s a thorough pop fest. At first, you might think the songs have undertones of love and breakups. However, over the course of the album, you realise it’s much deeper than that. The title track underpins the struggle of keeping up with the ‘perfect picture’ – public image. Again, on No FX, Diamond sings “You love me with no effects on”, which hints at the struggle that is maintaining one’s social image. On Poster Girl, we see the artist longing to be like the girl in the magazine, suggesting an internal conflict. Lip Sync is in keeping with the overarching theme of this musical creation. Diamond’s auto-tuned vocals explore perspective and self-image – “Maybe, one day I’ll be the real thing”. Affirmations is a pick-me-up with positive undertones. “I don't have to be somebody else/The best version of me is myself”, sings Diamond. Electropop tunes lend the album a lively, playful vibe. If you’re looking for a club-friendly album to groove to, try this one.
