Show Me The Menu...

Life is a combination of magic and pasta. - Federico Fellini

T

here's a famous quote by Julia Child: "People who love to eat are always the best people" - anyone who has spent even a few minutes around me will know this to ring true. I LOVE being around foodies - I'm talking about those who can turn up at the boujiest Japanese restaurant and order like a pro one day, and appreciate a good greasy burger and milkshake the next - if you like to gather around good food amid banter and genuine vibes, you're my kind of people. So, every year when the FACT Dining Awards come around, it's nothing but fun times, especially as Bahrain has some of the world's best restaurants on its doorstep. To top that off, 2019 marks the 10th annual FACT Dining Awards Bahrain - that's right, a whole decade of recognising all the efforts of Bahrain's top-notch food and beverage industry. Turn to p46 and check out all the nominees for the prestigious ceremony where we will celebrate the best and favourites in the country. Your vote counts so head on over to www.fact-magazine.com for more information and to make sure you've supported your favourite venues. Staying on the path to all things yummy, we've rounded up 31 eats to get you through October starting p27. From a very memorable afternoon tea to after-work hangouts and the livliest weekend brunches, there's no room for mediocre food this month only the best for our readers! For lovers of all things cool, we've got the fabulous line-up for the upcoming Bahrain International Music Festival (p22); alongside the latest updates from one of the island's most-anticipated happenings: the three-day Bahrain Jazz Fest (p42); it's events galore and there's so much to see and do throughout the month. We also have plenty of food envy in the form of our epicurean picks - the Culinary Spotlight at Fishbone By Chef Susy Massetti (p85); the Foodie Corner at a luxurious Friday Brunch in Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay (p89); and a taco-filled Venue Review at Links, Royal Golf Club (p93). Travel also plays a huge part in the October issue as our team brings you their experiences from faraway destinations. In Globetrotter, we fly off to the sunny shores of Koh Samui (p54) and our Travel Tales come from greener more palatial backdrops in Portugal (p61). Plus fashion, beauty, motoring, tech and the most prominent dining and society news. October is the gateway to cooler temperatures making their way into the Bahrain atmosphere - we can't wait to finally visit a restaurant and sit outside on the terrace. Let your hanger lead the way and we'll see you all in November for more hashtag food goals!☺

Breakfast Temptations WE EXPLORED A WORLD OF WHOLESOME, SATISFYING BREAKFAST FOODS AT INDIGO RESTAURANT AND BAR, ELOQUENTLY POSITIONED AT THE ROOFTOP OF THE MERCHANT HOUSE.

I

ndigo Restaurant and Bar at The Merchant House is a fabulous spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a beautiful garden terrace that one cannot help but adore. Executive Chef Rob Chipman is a renowned artisan in the kitchen which allows every visit here to be one where you're left wholeheartedly satisfied. We'd never had the privilege of indulging in breakfast there, so, I took this as the perfect opportunity to rabble my girlfriends together and head towards The Merchant House. An added bonus of visiting here is that you can use their handy valet service, so you aren't wasting time looking for a parking spot. Girls just want to have fun (and food) after all. There are the familiar items you'd expect for breakfast, albeit executed very well with pre-mium ingredients. Smoked Salmon with crushed avocado on sourdough bread had us all Instagram Ready as it was presented beautifully on a slate slab, but, it wasn't long before we were making the most out of the sharing concept that's welcomed here at Indigo. Just as well really, as the French Toast served with mixed berries and vanilla cream made its way to our table I thought there was going to be a fight as to who would have the first bite. The Eggs and Avocado dish served with salsa verde aligns beautifully with the Mediterra-nean flair of Indigo. It’s serious business. Of course, you also have classic Benedict's 8

and omelettes to appease your morning hunger pangs as well. The richness of hollandaise, and the creaminess of the egg just makes me very very happy when it comes to their Eggs Royale. Now, we can’t mention happiness without spotlighting The Blueberry Pancakes which are the lightest, tastiest ones I’ve ever had and are served with a decadent drizzle of blueberry syrup for extra bonus points. It’s some seriously intense stuff that is every bit as delicious as it is heart-stopping. Us? We love it. This must be what dreams are actually made of. It’s a worthwhile visit when you want to have a nice start to your day or indeed to take someone out. We would recommend ordering three or four of the dishes and sharing them with your dining companion(s). Now, don’t be surprised to see us hanging out there crying tears of joy into our coffee (served with delicious homemade biscotti) at every exquisite dish that is served. From 6.30am to 10.30am and 11am on weekends makes sure that you have the perfect excuse not to stay at home. ✤

BIG SCREEN Joker

Highlights

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

While wandering the streets of Gotham City dressed as a clown, failed comedian Arthur Fleck runs into some violent thugs. Dismissed by the fractured society, Fleck is trapped between a cyclic existence between apathy and cruelty as he begins a slow dissent into madness. What follows is a number of escalating events that transform him into a criminal mastermind.

DIRECTOR: Todd Phillips CAST: Joaquin Phoenix

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

An unprecedented narrative of Batman’s arch nemesis, Joker provides a social commentary that is a true cinematic masterpiece. Touching ideas and intentions that are totally new and uncharted, the film’s premise will give you a lot to think about. Easily one of the best superhero movies ever made, Joker ups the ante by blurring the line between superhero universe and real life. The film centres on Arthur Fleck, who feels rejected and disregarded by society, and is struggling to find his way in Gotham. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night, but eventually realises the joke always seems to be on him. Abandoned by the world, Arthur makes one bad decision that leads to a chain reaction of escalating events, as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker. Joaquin Phoenix’s excellent portrayal invites us to fall in love with the monster. Bold and heartbreakingly beautiful, Joker will captivate you as it takes you on a profoundly dark journey.

Gemini Man

Easily one of the best superhero movies ever made, Joker ups the ante by blurring the line between superhero universe and real life.

An ageing government assassin seeking to exit his career, Henry Brogan finds himself going up against a younger clone of himself named Junior. As he becomes the target of the mysterious operative who can seemingly predict his every move, Henry has no choice but to uncover the truth behind Junior’s creation and stopping him from going down the path he did.

– Joker

DIRECTOR: Ang Lee CAST: Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Bringing back the winning combination of Will Smith and nail-biting action sequences, Gemini Man tells an epic tale of battle between the past and present. An innovative action-thriller, Ang Lee’s Gemini Man has Will Smith against Will Smith. The first movie to use timeless VFX technology this year, Gemini Man sees Smith playing the role of Henry Brogan as well as his younger clone. Henry Brogan is an elite assassin who becomes the target of a mysterious agent who seems to be tracking his every move. To his horror, Brogan soon realises that the man who is trying to kill him is actually his faster, younger, cloned version of himself. Cementing Will Smith’s position as a box office star, Gemini Man’s gripping plot and amazing special effects make it one to watch out for! 38

Sweet Days of Discipline By Fleur Jaeggy

HIP-HOP/RAP

HIP-HOP/SOUL

Let Love

By Common

By Rapsody

A melodious tribute to some of the most influential black women, Rapsody’s newest album is music for your soul. The American rapper’s third studio album, Eve truly showcases her musical genius and creativity in all its glory. Bringing her black womanhood and ingenuity to the fore, the album pays a beautiful homage to strong female role models. A masterful tribute to Nina Simone, Nina includes an eerie cut of Strange Fruit. Featuring a collection of historical footnotes, the celebratory and uplifting track is the perfect tribute to the late singer. Featuring everyone from J. Cole to Queen Latifah, the album continues Rapsody’s exploration of female power. Cleo, a song about the unfairness of sexism, sees her sounding unstoppable and liberated. Dedicated to fictional bank robber Cleo Sims, the hardhitting banger is sprinkled with samples of the 1981 Phil Collins hit In The Air Tonight. The song sees the North Carolina native speaking to her critics and revealing she hasn’t always felt comfortable in the culture she so effortlessly carries. From the cascading album opener to the preceding proverbial masterpieces, the intricately woven details and heart touching lyrics make Eve a true triumph! 40

fact magazine

A raw and vulnerable celebration of relationships and emotions, Common’s latest offering will have you in your feelings. Having always worn his heart on his sleeve, the Chicago-hailing rapper, actor and activist goes all out on his newest album. Tackling the singer’s relationships with himself, his past romantic relationships as well as with his daughter, Let Love is all about embracing love in all forms. HER Love, featuring guest appearances from Daniel Caesar and Dwele is the rapper’s ode to HipHop history. Also featuring an unreleased beat from J Dilla, the song talks about the important women in Common’s life. Teaming up with Swizz Beatz, Hercules showcases the toughest cut on the album. Swizz is relatively calmer and more soulful than his usual hook work, while Common spins a complicated rhyme scheme that is reminiscent of his earlier work. Offering spiritual depth, soul and dimension, Common truly challenges himself and goes deeper than ever on Let Love.

Set against the backdrop of postwar Switzerland, the novel centres on a boarding school in the Appenzell. The narrator begins to describe the life of a remorseless young Eve, being a captive of the school, as well as her designs to win the affections of the apparently perfect new girl, Fréderique. As she broods over her intentions and the level and nature of control, the novel takes a suspended, unsettling energy. A beautifully worded read!

NON-FICTION

Trick Mirror: Reflections on SelfDelusion By Jia Tolentino An enlightening and unforgettable insight into the journey of selfdelusion, this is a book about the incentives that shape us, and how hard it is to understand ourselves clearly in a culture that revolves about the concept of self. In each essay, Jia talks about everything that has shaped her: the rise of social media, the American scammer as millennial hero, as well as the literary heroine’s journey from brave to blank to bitter.

AN EVERLASTING DREAM There are few places on the planet that take your breath away in an instance, but Samujana Villas in Koh Samui is definitely one of them as FACT's Edward Smith finds out...

Where The Magic Started From Bangkok, we flew directly to Koh Samui island with Bangkok Airways. The trip was short and pleasant – even though it was only one hour, they still served us a lunch! I thought that was a nice touch. Koh Samui has long evolved from its hippy roots to become a chic destination for luxury travellers. It is a pretty large island and it took about an hour to go half way round by taxi.

Luxury Home Away From Home Staying at Samujana Villas was like an incredible dream that we never wanted to wake up from. We stayed four nights in one of 54

fact magazine

the beautiful five-bedroom villas perched on the hillside with our private rooftop complete with infinity pool overlooking the Gulf of Thailand – what more is there to paradise? Set in the northeast of the island and only 10 minutes away from the airport, Samujana’s charming villas offer modern Thai architecture and breath-taking views. Each of the 26 villas comes with its own private butler and 24-hour hotel services. Our days were spent in pure relaxation watching movies in our private cinema and tanning at our private pool while our choice of food was being prepared on site by the very friendly and efficient private butler. A service that we absolutely recommend

every traveller to experience when visiting Thailand and Samujana gets it just right. Ranging from three to eight bedrooms, with airconditioning throughout, fully-equipped kitchens and reception rooms with state-of-the art multimedia and sound systems, Samujana really provides an unparalleled luxury experience with one motto: “Your Place. Your Time.” True to these words, we felt like time had stood still and we were in a bubble of comfort taking things easy and REALLY relaxing, disconnected from the outside world and our digital devices. Many villas also include jacuzzis, private gyms, pool tables and private spas, making it the perfect place for friends and family to gather and have a great time. Those looking for the utmost privacy will appreciate the in-villa facilities, especially when all you want to do is take it easy and spend quality time with loved ones. The resort is just a short taxi ride to some exciting activities in the area…

Adventure-seekers Unite On Koh Samui there are numerous little city centres and they all have their own charm and vibe. With local markets to explore, plenty of restaurants to dine at (if you can tear yourself away from the private butler service), and even the beloved Starbucks. There is something to quell any travellers’ wanderlust on this island paradise: amazing viewpoints, beautiful beaches and tons of watersports. As for the activities involving water, we would recommend Ang Thong National Marine Park which is the perfect location for watersports fans. Many tourism agencies offer day trips to the park on which you can kayak, snorkel, hike to viewpoints and relax 56

on gorgeous sandy beaches. It’s a place made for both active thrill-seekers and laid-back sun worshippers. Just a couple of miles away from Samujana Villas, you can also find one of Koh Samui’s most popular sandy strips, Chaweng beach. Chaweng stands out for several reasons, it is the most lively neighbourhood in Koh Samui; it is geared towards those who love to party and socialise. Once it gets dark, Chaweng has the liveliest party scene in Koh Samui which is also unique as most of the bars and clubs are along the beach. You can party all night and then leave the club and lay on the beach in the early a.m. - a set up that was appealing to droves of visitors. For the magical sundowner vistas of Chaweng we recommend the Jungle Club. This is a nice setting along a lush fact magazine

Words Can't Describe Samujana Villas is one hundred per cent the most lavish accommodation we’ve ever had the pleasure of staying in. There aren’t enough adjectives to describe its beauty and spot-on amenities. It is the type of place that you want to see and be seen in, but at the same time, it’s so special that you want it to be your own little secret. A resort that ticks all the boxes of luxury, bespoke living with a down-toearth approach - Samujana Villas is the best possible dream that you can actually turn into reality in Koh Samui. ✤

PALATIAL PORTUGAL

Conjuring up images of fresh seafood, custard tarts and long stretches of sandy beaches dotted with secluded coves, Portugal is a travel gem that FACT’s David Tapley visited this summer. Here, he checks into the picturesque Tivoli Avenida Liberdade followed by the bona fide palace Tivoli Palacio de Seteais‌ fact magazine

isbon, known for its authenticity and mix of old customs and ancient history is remarkably safe, easy to navigate and where the temperature rarely drops below 15°C. The Portuguese capital is not only aesthetically beautiful but benefits from the majority of tourist attractions and points of interest being concentrated in a relatively compact area within the heart of the city. Follow the route of the yellow no. 28 tram into historic Alfama, a district wedged between the Sao Jorge Castle and the Tejo river and you’ll discover one of the oldest neighbourhoods. Characterised by winding passageways that lead to unsigned local tascas, centuries-old churches and Roman ruins, Alfama is the kind of place that is best explored on foot but be prepared to get lost in the labyrinth of streets, but fear not, it’s all part of the fun. Beneath Alfama lies the Avenida Liberdade, the place to see and be seen in Lisbon and home to the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, 62

fact magazine

a five-star property boasting a timeless elegance that has been offering a unique style of Portuguese hospitality for over 80 years. The 1.5km thoroughfare is recognised as being one of the most expensive shopping boulevards in Europe where the likes of Luis Vuitton and Gucci are just moments walk from the hotel. Continue a little further and you’ll find the Estação de Rossio train Station, the touristic Elevador de Santa Justa and several excellent restaurants such as José Avillez’ Belcanto, which currently holds the no. 42 position on the world’s 50 best restaurants’ ranking. A recent €15 million refurbishment project has been undertaken to bring modern touches to this iconic property and ensure the utmost levels of comfort are maintained for guests checking-in to the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade. Passing through the glass sliding doors we are immediately enveloped by a sense of calm that offers a complete juxtaposition from the busy avenue outside. The reception area is engulfed in fresh floral blooms and an abundance

of soft furnishings which have been lovingly spaced throughout the large glass atrium. Turquoise curtains dangle seductively from the upper levels, while gold embellishment surrounds a small bar which is reflected in the elevators. Transporting guests into the upper reaches of the property where a collection of 285 rooms and suites await. Beautifully appointed, all room categories feature a classic design to enhance the feeling of urban luxury and are spacious and elegantly furnished with large comfortable double beds, a terrace or patio and a living area to relax and put your feet up after a day or exploration or shopping until you quite literally drop. Rooms and suites feature all of the expected modern comforts - flatscreen televisions, mini bar, electronic safe. It’s evident that a lot of thought has gone into the modernisation of the property and simple touches such as the inclusion of Bulgari and Hermès amenities in the suites help to elevate the Tivoli experience and cement the reputation of the landmark property. Outside of the room there’s plenty to explore with an outdoor swimming pool situated in a tropical garden at the rear of the property. This oasis of calm offers a small circular pool surrounded by vegetation and plenty of sun-loungers. Lower level guests will find a state-of-the-art fitness centre and the Anantara Spa, a first for the Portuguese capital and a serene environment that encourages introspection and a focus on wellbeing. Six treatment rooms act as a temporary haven and combine the far-eastern therapies for which the Anantara brand is renowned, with indigenous Portuguese rituals. If your stay only allows for one treatment, we’d suggest soothing those aching muscles with the Anantara Signature Massage, using natural oils, combined with purpose-designed movements, to stimulate circulation and promote deep relaxation, while restoring the flow of energy along the meridian lines. Living up to a reputation as one of the city’s most popular meeting places, Tivoli Avenida Liberdade offers several exciting dining options. The classical Cervejaria Liberdade is the hotels’ all-daydining option and while breakfast offers up a live egg station, charcuterie and a plethora of pastel de nata, it’s the al la carte service of Portuguese coastal seafood specialities that piqued our interest. Traditionally cervejarias are small bars that also sell

food items and here the idea has been upscaled and expanded into a fine dining setting where plates of cured meat compete with a resplendent Arraiolos Sheeps Milk Cheese that is buttery in flavour and accompanied by a sweet pumpkin jam. Cervejaria Liberdade is also the place to try the traditional pica pau, a dish of rich and flavorful chopped beef loin served with home-made French fries and the pots of aromatic seafood rice piled high with crawfish lobster, clams and mussels. For a livelier experience, head to the Sky Bar for sundowners overlooking Lisbon’s terracotta rooftops. Much like the lobby downstairs, it’s a popular meeting place with an energetic DJ and some of the best mixed-drinks you’re likely to find in the capital. Chefpreneur Olivier da Costa’s second Scene restaurant (following a successful opening in Sao Paulo, Brazil) is anchored around an art-deco inspired dining room featuring plenty of foliage and a tree raising from the central bar area. It’s an exciting space to frequent and a sense of frivolity overcomes the restaurant which serves up an exciting menu that fuses the best of Brazil and Portugal into an eclectic selection of dishes that also supports a Japanese sushi bar. There’s a freshness to the Alaskan King crab tacos that is hard to replicate, while the octopus carpaccio is alive with flavours thanks to a vibrant lemon vinaigrette, yet it’s the lesser-known Brazilian dishes that have us enraptured. From the simply moreish deep-fried tapioca with cured cheese through to a show-stopping dessert of dulce de leche soufflé with guava ice cream, that would have had us licking the bowl were it not for the high-end clientele perched on the tables in our vicinity. We split our trip and found ourselves in the sleepy mountain town of Sintra for the latter half of our Portuguese adventures. Forested mountainsides, elaborate villas and castles precariously perched on mountain tops are all part and parcel of a visit to UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sintra. The home of royalty, Sintra adopts a slower pace and feels more restrained than Lisbon and late afternoons (following the departure of tour buses and daytrippers) is the ideal time for culture vultures to strap on their walking boots and explore. Steeped in history our base during our all too short stay was an actual Palace! The Tivoli Palacio de Seteais is a rare find of a hotel having been built in the 18th century in a neoclassical style by the then Dutch Consul in Portugal. During the 19th century, several 64

distinguished Portuguese families lived in the Palace including the fifth Marquis of Marialva, who built the triumphal arch linking the two wings. Then in 1953 the Palace was converted into a hotel. With just 30 rooms, the experience of staying in a palace is one of refined luxury that features exemplary levels of service and rooms that have been tastefully modernised while still retaining their characteristic features and period furniture. Timberframed windows, deep bathtubs, rich tapestries and a collection of artworks provide the rooms with a sense of timelessness that exemplifies the properties natural charm. Our superior room overlooking orchards of lemon trees evokes a sense of venturing back in time with its creaky wooden floorboards, heavy-set curtains and a wooden bed that all add to the charm of feeling like pampered royalty. We spent many hours exploring the ballrooms and expansive grounds, home to hedge mazes, herb gardens and a beautiful outdoor swimming pool, cut into the mountainside and offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Similar to Lisbon, the Anantara Spa Tivoli Palácio de Seteais is the place to unwind and features only two treatment rooms for an exclusive clientele. When guests enter the spa, it is given over in its entirety - something we’ve not experienced before. The spa is situated inside a circular pigeon-house that has been converted into a quaint and intimate space where treatments are more specialised and many of the products are made from natural ingredients hand-picked from the hotel grounds. With only one dining option on site, the Seteais Restaurant is regarded as one of Sintra’s very best and treats diners to a royal experience complete with pressed white table clothes, dainty

cutlery, gold crockery and a menu of Portuguese favourites that have been reinterpreted and elevated to match the palatial dining room. Roasted duck magret, braised codfish and octopus are all prevalent on the menu and bookings are essential. Lisbon and Sintra are ideal for a combined visit to Portugal and are more than likely to leave you yearning to return. Providing guests with unrestrained luxury, high levels of service, excellent food and beverage and discretion, Tivoli hotels also offer several luxury properties along the Portuguese Algarve as well as in hotels further afield. Tivoli is undeniably a brand with a unique sense of style that embodies the warmth of Portuguese hospitality with its eyes firmly set on expansion. ✤

O

ver the months and years, we at FACT has had the privilege of inspecting and test driving some of the very finest cars to enter the region. There are however some brands and models that have elevated themselves into a class of their own. One of the clearest examples of this being the iconic sports car giants, Porsche. Thanks to the fantastic team at Porsche Centre Bahrain, our latest exciting automobile experience was to be the new Panamera 4S Sport Turismo. We have to admit that the name alone caused much excitement and by the time we arrived to collect the vehicle, we could hardly wait to get a hold of the keys. However, it was only once the vehicle was in sight that we could truly appreciate the magnitude of the sports car experience that awaited us. The dynamic proportions of the Sport Turismo emphasise both its power and striking beauty. The width of the vehicle’s modish, arrow-shaped bonnet is emphasised by the presence of the crossbar and radiator grille. The LED headlights finish off the impressive front-end design with a flourish. Starting from the B-pillars (start of rear doors), this Panamera features a completely unique rear design. The elongated window lines above the pronounced shoulders of the vehicle adds to its imposing presence, whilst the protracted contour of the roof ensures perfect aerodynamics. Its silhouette is further distinguished by short overhangs and 21-inch wheels. The roof drops less drastically at the rear than that of the window line, resulting in a distinctive D-pillar (vertical supports of the window areas) smoothly transitioning into the shoulder section of the car. An adaptive spoiler not only increases the sporty appeal of the Turismo, but also hints at its exceptional on-road capabilities. Thoroughly impressed by the exterior, we gently slid inside the front of the vehicle, where we were soon admiring the layout and feel of the well-designed space. Porsche always deliver a first-class cockpit, complete with materials and finishes that most car owners can only dream of. The Sport Turismo continues this tradition of internal perfection with every component feeling well positioned and of the highest quality. The seats were comfortable and ideally shaped to ensure a commanding driving position, whilst the premium steering wheel felt like it was made for our hands, adding to our desire to get out onto the tarmac. This new Panamera features three rear seats, although it is also available with a two rear seat configuration. The ample head and knee room ensure passengers a comfy ride, whilst the folding down of the rear seats expands the 520-litre storage capacity to 1390-litres. It is obvious that the functionality of the Sport Turismo was carefully and cleverly designed by the masterminds at Porsche. The advanced cockpit houses an intuitive user interface combined with a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, that showcases the next level of development for the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system. In many areas, touch-sensitive panels and individually configurable displays have replaced classic hard keys and conventional instruments. The high-end Burnmester sound system is yet another great feature that ensures an ideal driving experience. After being blown away by the beauty and ingenuity of the car’s external and internal design, we turned our attention to what really matters most. Performance! The smooth feel of the Sport

Turbo was undeniable and we saw plenty of heads turning in our direction as we weaved our way through the traffic. Once away from the busy roads, we opened up the 2.9-litre V6 twin-turbo engine and could not help but chuckle as the g-forces pressed us back into our seats. Producing 440 hp at 5650 rpm, this beast of a car surges from 0-100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 289 km/h! The Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system is a permanent, fully variable all-wheel drive system that ensures the Sport Turismo is constantly performing at the very highest level. The four driving modes to choose from (Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual) allow one to get the very best out of the car in different conditions. Both a considerably improved fuel economy as well as reduced fuel emissions are further important features of this modern creation, ones that ensure a lighter impact on the environment. The look, power, handling, breaking and overall performance of this vehicle was outstanding and our sheer enjoyment levels were off the charts throughout the experience. Without a doubt, Porsche have introduced yet another brilliant creation to the luxury car segment. ✤

WORLD PREMIERE OF PORSCHE TAYCAN PORSCHE PRESENTED ITS FIRST FULLY-ELECTRIC SPORTS CAR TO THE PUBLIC WITH A SPECTACULAR WORLD PREMIERE HELD SIMULTANEOUSLY ON THREE CONTINENTS.

The four-door sports saloon is a unique package, offering typical Porsche performance and connectivity with everyday usability. At the same time, highly advanced production methods and the features of the Taycan are setting new standards in the fields of sustainability and digitalisation. “The Taycan links our heritage to the future. It carries forward the success story of our brand – a brand that has fascinated and thrilled people the world over for more than 70 years," said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, who opened the world premiere in Berlin. "This day marks the start of a new era." The first models in the new series are the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo. They are at the cutting edge of Porsche E-Performance and are among the most powerful production models that the sports car manufacturer currently has in its product range. Less powerful variants of these all-wheel drive vehicles will follow this year. The first derivative to be added will be the Taycan Cross Turismo at the end of next year. By 2022, Porsche will have invested more than six billion euros in electromobility. “We promised a true Porsche for the age of electromobility – a fascinating sports car that not only excites in terms of its technology and driving dynamics, but also sparks a passion in people all over the world, just like its legendary predecessors have done. Now we are delivering on this promise,” emphasises Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board of Porsche AG – Research and Development. With its clean, puristic design, the Taycan signals the beginning 74

of a new era. At the same time, it retains the unmistakable Porsche design DNA. From the front it looks particularly wide and flat with highly contoured wings. The silhouette is shaped by the sporty roofline sloping downward to the rear. The highly sculpted side sections are also characteristic. The sleek cabin, the drawn-in rear C-pillar and the pronounced shoulders of the wings result in a sharply emphasised rear, typical of the brand. There are also innovative elements such as the glasseffect Porsche logo, which has been integrated into the light bar at the rear. With a Cd value from 0.22, the aerodynamically optimised basic shape makes a significant contribution to low energy consumption and thus long range.✤ WWW.PORSCHE.COM/MIDDLE-EAST/_BAHRAIN

VOLKSWAGEN REVAMPED The curtain has been raised on “New Volkswagen “: On the first press day of the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt, the Volkswagen brand was unveiled its new logo and its new brand design. This world premiere marks the start of a new era for Volkswagen, accompanied by the presentation of the full-electric ID.31 at the same time. Volkswagen’s future is electric, fully connected and has a neutral carbon balance. With its new brand design, VW has created a uniform global 360° brand experience which is more modern and more authentic. The new Volkswagen logo with its flat two-dimensional design is clearer and has been reduced to its essential elements. The brand design and the logo aim for high flexibility and are intended for digital applications. The realignment of Volkswagen’s brand design is one of the world’s largest rebranding campaigns. The changeover to the new brand design is due to be completed by mid-2020. “New Volkswagen” can be seen and experienced in the design of the vehicles, in customer contacts and in the brand presentation as a whole. The new brand design applies both to Volkswagen

Passenger Cars and to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. Volkswagen’s Chief Designer Klaus Bischoff played a key role in the development of the new corporate identity. “In the new brand design, we have created an authentic communications platform for the emotional presentation of e-mobility. THE ‘PLAICE’ TO BE

The words ‘Modern European trattoria and bar lounge by the sea’ had FACT’s Jayne Houghton rushing to Fishbone by Chef Susy Massetti’s restaurant quicker than a (pan) flash.

Y

ou know how there’s always that one restaurant that you pass by so many times, hidden in plain sight, but you just never got around to visiting? The one that makes you want to round-house kick yourself in the face for waiting so long when you finally visit? That’s how I feel about Fishbone by Chef Susy Massetti. Open for a year now at the back of Novotel Al Dana Resort, this is a little piece of quiet intimate dining in an otherwise loud dining scene. This unassuming restaurant provided one of the best dining experiences I've had in this Kingdom, and the sea-view is unparalleled as an added bonus to boot. Contrary to the name, they have an eclectic menu that is full to the brim with items for herbivores, carnivores and pes-catarians alike. The dining room is intimate yet inviting as natural light penetrates through the floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the outlet, white table clothes against an array of quirky fabric and scat-tered foliage allows it to be a wonderful choice for either a romantic dinner or a nice night out with friends - either in their spacious main room, or indeed on the front patio that’s reminis-cent of an Italian taverna. Regardless, a reservation is definitely recommended. Before I talk about the food, I want to talk about the service. It was phenomenal. There are really only a handful of restaurants here that truly understand the importance of service, and this is one of them. From the minute we walked in, right up to the point we left with happy full bellies, they were attentive, extremely polite, kept our table clean, and our glasses full. It’s a difficult thing to balance without being too intrusive on the guests, but under the eye of Op-erational Manager Luigi Rizzuto this visit went without a hitch which is testament to the rap-port that is integral - and showcased - throughout Fishbone. Of course, it only made the food better, not that it needed any help. Fishbone's menu is designed as a sharing concept, the dishes are all served 'familystyle' in hearty portions served in the middle of the table for you to enjoy amongst friends and family. "Just like 86

fact magazine

'Mama used to make...". It's important to note that the menu is seasonal to offer you the very best of local produce from local gardeners, fishermen alongside spices and food that strive to preserve culture and traditions. For appetisers, we started with La Cevichita which is diced fish fillet served amidst onions, coriander, green chilli and lemon-lime dressing, and also 'Crisps of the Sea' which are the most delicious tender golden fried calamari and zucchini that you'll ever have the pleasure of tasting. Honestly, the spicy tomato jam and avo-mayo amplify this to new levels! Although their Roasted Cauliflower 'Steak' vegetarian option was the one that well and truly stole my heart as the coriander, olives and sun-dried tomatoes balanced wonderfully with its serving of black venere rice and pine nuts. The piece de resistance for me undoubtedly was the Branzino Al Limone with its classic lemon and capers sauce, allowing

the moreish sea bass fillet's flesh to just melt-in-your-mouth instantaneously. The next round of applause is to spotlight the delectable 14-hour Braised Nahimi Lamb Shoulder served with rocket gremolata and mashed potatoes. Now, this is the dish that you brag about the next time you see your friends as the tender meat falls apart in front of your very eyes with a feathered touch of your fork. Chef Susy's Pumpkin Cappelleti is famous across Bahrain, and this comes as no surprise when you savour the parmesan cheese and black truffle filling that provides a tasty symphony with the pumpkin and hazelnut crumble. These are of course, only a couple of highlights. Just when I thought I couldn't devour anything more, my sweet tooth betrayed me in the best way possible... ordering dessert. The Tiramisu with its savoiardi cookies (or Lady Fingers as I've formerly

known them by) and espresso was divine in every sense of the word, as was the Baked Yoghurt with fresh berries that my partner enjoyed. So the next time you’re thinking about taking your date out somewhere else, take them here instead. All of this, amongst the upcoming launch of their October a la carte brunch (keep an eye on their Instagram for the latest updates!) will ensure that it will never go unnoticed again... and on that note, it was with a heavy heart and a full stomach that we uttered “Cheque please!”. ✤

BEST OF BRUNCH Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay has taken on the concept of generosity with its extravagant Friday Brunch offering at Bahrain Bay Kitchen. FACT’s Layal El Mahmoud tells the culinary story of a great dining destination… fact magazine

oing out for a Friday Brunch is not just for those who want copious amounts of food and creative cocktails (although, we’re partial to both) in the course one leisurely afternoon - it’s a lifestyle that many have been accustomed to. The lifestyle of the “brunchers”; outgoing, good-food-loving, life-enjoying people, the kind of diners to whom a meal is a celebration and a good steak is a triumph - they are the make or break of a brunch success. Seated comfortably at Bahrain Bay Kitchen restaurant on a Friday afternoon, I can absolutely understand the feeling of the “brunchers”. The satisfaction, the content and the excitement to hit the buffet with all I’ve got! At Bahrain Bay Kitchen, you are in the heart of the action; the music welcomes you like a warm breeze, and the friendly staff are even warmer. Passing the enchanted singer in her polka dot outfit and the unique white skeleton piano, we reached our table not far from the floorto-ceiling windows separating us from the garden. We knew we were in for a treat. The island sushi bar in the middle of the venue is a fruitful dreamland with an array of salads, sushi and sashimi, cold seafood appetisers, deep-fried seafood appetisers, and the perfectly balanced ceviche served in coral-like white dishes. And I find myself to passing up the famous papaya salad in favour of trying other exquisite creations. Soup station? Of course! The wild mushroom was earthy and rich and my companion equally enjoyed the everloved Tom Yom Kung. The usual corners of bread and cheese of every kind and shape are artistically displayed with precision and high taste. Hot meets cold; the crunchy tacos and nachos with a variety of refreshing toppings were the neighbours of the Indian corner where my friend fell in love with the best butter chicken he has ever eaten especially when dipped with freshly 90

baked tandoor bread. The vegetarian version with cauliflower was just as heavenly. Some tandoori chicken and a couple of sambosas to add to the plate? Why not! The Thai corner reminded me of those lovely days spent on the shores of Phuket with the smell of curry and sweet basil. Chicken, beef, and shrimp satay with peanut sauce and cucumber salad, noodles, red chicken curry… OMG

let me stay here please! And here comes the centre piece, a variety of roasts that can make a buffet on its own. Turkey, chicken, brisket, leg of lamb, lamb chops, and steaks along with a banquet of side dishes ranging from grilled corn on the cob and steamed vegetables to creamy spinach, roasted root vegetables, and black truffle mash. Fruits might be your favourite ending to a large meal, but believe me, not today! Okay, maybe a few pineapple skewers dipped in white chocolate from the seductive fountain. And fragments of homemade chocolate piled on glossy wood stands are tempting for any chocolate lover, but no, nothing can beat that piece of purple macaroon oozing with some cream cheese filling… wow and I’m not even into macaroons! I didn't forget the ice cream, with jelly beans on top... a memory of your childhood worth the extra calories. Fresh juices, drinks, and innovative cocktails and mocktails are all to quench your thirst, but it wouldn’t be right not to enjoy the richest cup of espresso or the perfect cup of tea before waving goodbye. More than generous, more than perfect, more than just a brunch... why accept anything less? Everyone deserves the best! s complete food devotees, we are spoilt for choice in Bahrain, however, it is usually reserved only for daytime hours during the week, whereas we’ve always secretly coveted a Thursday evening hangout in which we can enjoy a meal with loved ones, under less obtrusive drinking hours and expectations. Links have got this notion exe-cuted perfectly with a selection of varied tacos suitable for even the pickiest of pal-ates. Step inside the Royal Golf Club and make your way to the mezzanine floor of the Club House to discover the finest in international cuisine at Links restaurant. There is an outdoor terrace for you to unwind in, if you so wish, however, the floor to ceiling picture windows that offer patrons spectacular views across the golf course will have you veering towards the lounge, with its stylish wooden panelling making the perfect backdrop for welcoming your weekend in style. We were thrilled to find the restaurant at a healthy capacity this Thursday, but, grate-ful at the same time as it allowed us to commandeer the taco menu at high capacity. The team didn’t crack under pressure where other venues have failed and the staff merely continued to interact with guests without it jeopardising the quality of service or food - result! The special menu includes eight different tacos with a preference of white or corn tortillas - both are great in our opinion - but having the choice is nice. First up is the rather juicy Beef Con Carne - an incredibly moreish and tasty classic that every car-nivore will appreciate. Next up, one that we surprisingly enjoyed more than expected - the Cauliflower Taco with thin strips of potato on top - genius and completely deli-cious. The shredded Tandoori Chicken Taco is a blessing for those who want a little aroma and familiarity for their taste buds, whilst the Crab Taco is made all-the-more mouthwatering with a lip-licking

mango salsa - a beautiful combination of flavours. The Shrimp Taco is nice and light with fresh textures, and the Pulled Beef Taco is a stunner with its tomato and red onion salsa - a rich and powerful marriage of ingredi-ents that we wholeheartedly approve of. We also ordered a few treats off the a la carte menu. The Pan Fried Sea Bass blew us away - with its complementing flavours of ginger, toasted peanuts and papaya salad - a dish that every pescatarian will be drooling over. Curiosity got the better of us and we ordered the Gluten Free Taco Pasta - an excellent choice for anyone with intolerances.

the mezzeh buffet to start, a sampling of marinated vegetables, dips, garden leaves and bread. The spreads come with the most amazing, enormous pita bread, which is seasoned with oil, salt, and spices and served piping hot. It is the best pita bread, perhaps ever. We here at FACT live for seafood, therefore we also sampled the Baked Oysters that were drizzled in garlic, accompanied with chorizo and finished in breadcrumbs - what an absolute masterpiece. The duck definitely didn’t disappoint and we would have been ‘quackers’ not to try it as proved rich yet flavourful. To wrap things up we had to order the traditional South African Malva Pudding with caramel sauce and vanilla custard - there is nowhere else in Bahrain that does this dish like the Royal Golf Club and we are constantly raving about it to dessert enthu-siasts. The Latino Band played live tunes and created an energetic atmosphere for playful dancing and all-round good vibes. Back On The Move Pearl Wasif is an Advanced Physiotherapist Practitioner. She aims to provide evidencebased management to relieve pain and restore function and movement.

HEALTH TIPS ON BACK PAIN Almost everybody will experience lower back pain at some point in time. Here is some advice on the steps people can take to help themselves. The key factor is not to panic and try and understand what triggers back pain rather than trying to prevent ever getting lower back pain. Majority of the people believe that an X-RAY or MRI will identify the cause of their lower back pain. Research has shown that people who DO NOT have lower back pain have disc bulges, disc degeneration, disc protrusions and facet joint degeneration. So, don’t worry about what is on the MRI report, these are normal aging processes. There is strong evidence that keeping active and avoiding bed rest is important in facilitating recovery from back pain. Exercise is very good for lower back pain and is the only current approach that reduces the chances of recurrence by half. Taking steps to improve your overall health may reduce your risk of low back pain. Getting enough sleep, being more active, maintaining a healthy weight, stop smoking, doing things that make you happy, reducing work and life stresses, are all practical, cheap and effective ways to manage low back pain and reduce the risk of recurrence. A quick piece of advice, remember that your back is a strong stable structure capable of lots of movement. ✤

Realistic Timing Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.

REALISTIC TIME This is something I’ve talked about before and of late seem to be talking about a lot. Set yourself enough time to reach your goals. If you know you have a wedding, engagement , holiday or some other event coming up, be realistic about the time it will take for you to get that flat stomach which will enable you to look fabulous in that dress or suit. If your up coming event is four to five months away don’t wait two to three weeks before the event to start saying to yourself “ok, I’m going to workout and diet now”. IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. It really does amaze me that some people still believe the nonsense that some fitness magazines and YouTube videos spout out; “How to get great Ab’s in five moves, drink this tea for two weeks to a flat stomach”. Please everyone, STOP listening to this nonsense. It doesn’t work and will never work, and it makes the lives of Personal Trainers like myself harder as we have to try and explain to our clients why. There is only one way to achieve your goals and that is by putting in the hard work it requires and cutting out the junk food and cleaning up your diet. We don’t live in a fantasy land where a fairy godmother will wave her wand and everything magically changes. If you’re coming from a sedentary lifestyle you need to give yourself enough time for your body to change. Do the work.✤

HOMELY CULTURE While culture can mean a lot of different things to different people, I believe your culture is anything that makes you feel at home. Having been blessed enough to live in four countries, I often felt accepted and familiar in a culture other than my own. With the lack of cultural identity as an ever-present part of my life, forming a sense of belonging has never been easy. The pessimist in me expecting the worst, I could have never imagined the impact Bahrain and its culture would have on me, while turning me into the person that I am today. Embracing me into its vibrant, welcoming cultural milieu, my integration into the country’s society was made much smoother thanks to the super friendly people. What makes the people of Bahrain so special is their ability to accept all cultures and make them their own. Reflecting the amalgamation of an array of cultures into everything from their food, society and the people, the island’s diversity knows no bounds. A melting pot of people from all around the world, Bahrain exposed me to opportunities that I never would have experienced back home. From a super fun job and making friends with people from all over the globe to the mouthwatering cuisines, my three years in Bahrain have been nothing short of an adventure. As hard as leaving my friends back home and the subsequent culture shock was, I would do it all over again! ✤

Tell us three things about your job role and the qualities needed to succeed in this position… Although it is tough to describe the job role with just three things, I will highlight the most crucial ones. Firstly, to constantly improve business levels – this sure is on top of the list. Bahrain has been an emerging market over the years and plenty of new market segments have surfaced which have to be tapped and secured. Secondly and perhaps the most satisfying job role is to build memories for our guests; seeing a happy guest is just priceless. Third and the most challenging job role is to inculcate the spirit of team work amongst a diverse workforce. And the three qualities to succeed 98
