“
“Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning how to dance in the rain.” - Vivian Greene
R
aise your hand if you vividly remember that complaining about the heat used to be the activity du jour every summer. To say the past few months presented slightly greater challenges is an understatement. Maintaining six feet in a crowded mall feels downright impossible, deadlines are hampered by awkward video meetings, and our everyday vernacular now includes terms that didn’t actually exist at the start of the year. Maskne. Covidiot. Quaranteam. Quarantine and chill. And then there’s ‘new normal’, a phrase we maybe use more than we’d care to admit. While the new normal has different connotations for different people, our cover story (p16) made one thing clear: the pandemic forced entrepreneurs in Bahrain to improvise on the daily just in order to survive. We spoke with experts across fields like education, events, wellness, and tourism about how they coped with these unprecedented circumstances – and their insights are nothing short of inspirational. Elsewhere in the issue, we pay tribute to a beloved figure gone too soon (p10), talk architecture with Noura Al Sayeh of Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (p40), and check into Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa (p44) to experience a staycation in the coronavirus era. But it wouldn’t be FACT if food wasn’t on the agenda and, as restaurants around town slowly start to reopen, we dine at new spots and old favourites (p76) – all in the name of research, of course. Lastly, we’re delighted to announce the return of our annual FACT Dining Awards, this year honouring not just the best in the culinary game, but also the unsung heroes that kept us well-fed through the pandemic. Find all the nominees within the pages of this issue (p48) and on www.fact-magazine.com. Go forth and vote.

ALL CLEAR THE RITZ-CARLTON, BAHRAIN EMBRACES THE FUTURE OF DINING IN
W
e reach for our face masks before our car keys, our sanitisers before our shades – and use the term "social distancing" more often than we'd care to admit. So, naturally, leave it to The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain to set the precedent for dining in during these unprecedented times by introducing Plex’Eat. Designed to protect both restaurant staff and guests, these nifty plexiglass hoods are suspended from the ceiling, offering a surprisingly stylish solution to enjoying a meal with a side of safety in a virus-riddled world. Currently fitted at select restaurants and lounges across the resort, Plex’Eat visors surround each person’s upper body in order to reduce the risk of airborne infection. This ingenious introduction is in line with the country's measures to slowly begin easing the strict guidelines on restaurants and bars. Not only are the protective shields a unique combination of style and substance, but they're also recyclable, simple to set up and 8

take apart, and easy to clean and disinfect. An overture on the back allows guests to easily enter and exit from the transparent dome. Plex’Eat is the branchild of French designer Christophe Gernigon, who reveals that months of confinement led him to imagine "a new way of welcoming customers of bars and restaurants in search of outings”. And considering The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain is the first in the region to embrace Plex’Eat, General Manager Bernard de Villèle says, "Our goal remains to be the benchmark of luxury hospitality and what better way to prove our dedication to this cause than to introduce a first-of-its-kind safe setting to fine dining.”✤

• IN MEMORY OF
CHEF MOHAMMED SAMARA June 5, 1961 – August 13, 2020
GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN For any foodie worth their salt, the name Mohammed Samara needs no introduction. For the rest, here goes: the immensely talented chef was a beloved figure in both the culinary community and the country as a whole. He served as executive sous chef at InterContinental Regency Bahrain for over two decades, satiating appetites and winning hearts with his delicious creations, before his tragic demise last month. Here, as the FACT team offers its condolences to Chef Samara’s family and friends, here are a few quotes that illustrate just how much he will be missed.

IN MEMORY OF •
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. I knew Chef Samara for 21 years, and he was with InterContinental Regency Bahrain for 28 years. During his stint, he was not just a colleague but also a mentor, coach, brother, friend, and father figure to many. He turned down many opportunities and remained with the hotel until his last working day with so much dedication and passion. He represented Bahrain and the hotel in several culinary exhibitions and events locally and globally, leading by example – a true role model for the next generation, a team player who was loved by everyone. Rest in peace, chef.” Mohammed Sanad, Hotel Manager, InterContinental Regency Bahrain
I was heartbroken when I heard. Although I left Bahrain some time ago, Samara and I have kept in touch over the years, doing a few promotions here in Hong Kong. I learned so much from him. Samara took the time to teach me so many Arabic dishes, becoming not only a colleague, but also a good friend. He was an amazing family man, so proud of his children. My deepest condolences go to his family, he will truly be missed.” John Drummond, General Manager, InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong
I was shocked to hear of Chef Samara's demise. He was a trustworthy and reliable person with a good heart. I remember him as a chef who worked with passion in everything he did. His ability to calm a situation with unforeseen circumstances was incomparable – it's hard to find the words to express his greatness. He was a great colleague and a strong leader to those around him, and his efficient work style and honest personality always delighted me. Over time, he became a dear friend to me, my wife, and my kids. He will never ever be forgotten.” Max Grenard, Corporate Food and Beverage Director, WASL Hospitality & Leisure
As a regular guest at the hotel, it was always a pleasure to see Chef Samara. He was such a humble person, and always took so much pride in his work. His knowledge of the local cuisine was most obvious during Ramadan; he so clearly enjoyed cooking and presenting his mouth-watering iftar dishes, ouzi in particular. His personal attention to all guests made him extra special. His lovely personality and delicious food will be sorely missed by us.” Ariette Paul, InterContinental Regency Bahrain guest
“The day was as long as it was hard. As the sun played games with the horizon and dusk approached, my hunger pangs were palpable. But tradition beckoned as it was Ramadan, and I waited in anticipation of the culinary journey that was to come – one that would be typically Bahraini in nature. Soon, all my senses danced with delight as the plate of kebabs I had ordered was laid before me. The aroma of perfectly cooked meat and exotic spices sent me spiraling into a vortex of ecstasy. As I reveled in this moment, I had – unbeknownst to me – been introduced to the marvel behind the meal: Chef Samara. He was a man whose talent and dedication to his craft knew no bounds. Throughout his 28 years with the hotel, he was a beacon of light and an inspiration to other young chefs who shared his knowledge and passion for food. It’s tragic that Chef Samara was taken from us last month, but I know his presence in the hotel and our hearts will remain forever.” Philipp Economou, General Manager, InterContinental Regency Bahrain

STAY SAFE, PLAY SAFE Safety first is (still) the name of the game at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. In keeping with the theme of our September issue – New Normal – we'd be remiss not to mention Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa's latest achievement. The hotel is one of the first in Bahrain to receive the new ALLSAFE certification that is vetted by Bureau Veritas. But what exactly does that mean? Sofitel Bahrain is part of the Accor family, a hospitality group that deemed the health and well-being of its guests and employees a top priority long before we tossed around the word 'pandemic'. It's this aspect of the brand DNA that led to Accor establishing some of the most stringent cleaning standards and operational procedures in the world of hospitality in preparation for its properties reopening around the world. These standards were developed alongside the aforementioned Bureau Veritas – a global leader in testing, inspections, and certification – under the ALLSAFE cleanliness and prevention label. What all that jargon translates to is a safe space for guests to stay and play. Not only have the highest cleanliness and safety standards been implemented as part of the certification, but Sofitel Bahrain has also introduced the ‘ALL Safe Officer’ programme. This unique initiative brings with it a new role within the resort, appointing one officer responsible for 12

ensuring the implementation of all sanitary procedures and addressing any guest inquiries related to hotel operations and preventative measures. “The safety and well-being of our guests and team members has always been, and remains, our priority. Receiving the ALLSAFE certification while we have also been implementing local regulations is a statement to the efforts our teams are making every day to achieve this,” says Mehdi Hanayen, General Manager at Sofitel Bahrain. The hotel continues to work closely with local authorities to ensure the strictest compliance with policies and guidelines issued to protect guest health and safety during the ongoing pandemic, and has extended its popular Magnifique Summer Escapade offers through the month of September. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED Al Areen Palace & Spa by Accor joins its sister properties by receiving the ALLSAFE label. A stay at Al Areen Palace & Spa by Accor conjures visuals of ambient lighting, floating breakfasts, regal courtyards, soothing hues – and now superior safety standards. The resort has joined its sister properties in Accor hospitality group by receiving the ALLSAFE Label and Bureau Veritas Certification. What that means is the highest standards of cleanliness and prevention have been developed with and vetted by Bureau Veritas – a world leader in testing, inspections and certification – and successfully implemented at Al Areen Palace & Spa by Accor. Furthermore, these standards have been firsthand audited by Bureau Veritas itself. "The group's operational expertise, our geographic footprint, and the lessons learned from previous outbreaks of infectious disease provide us with a strong track record and expertise that enables us to seamlessly adapt to new customer hygiene expectations," says Sébastien Bazin, Chairman and CEO of Accor. "This is a historic challenge for the group, which is working tirelessly to prepare for the recovery so that our guests continue to enjoy their travel experience in complete safety." Enhanced cleaning protocols are now in place, with all high-touch areas being disinfected on a frequent basis. Over in the rooms, an enhanced cleaning program calls for hospital-grade cleaning materials, and all bedding is washed and treated at high temperatures. The team at Al Areen Palace & Spa by Accor has also been trained as part of a comprehensive new safety and hygiene program to ensure all employees have the skills and education necessary to protect not only guests, but also themselves. The ALLSAFE Label also brings with it new guest contact measures. Contactless payment solutions and desk-free check-in are offered wherever possible, and practices such as guest temperature checks and partitions 14

at front desks are also part of the 'new normal'. And speaking of the new normal, a couple of changes have taken place at the hotel's many restaurants. Here, the enhancement of food safety standards includes maintaining a one-metre distance across tables, and only allowing gatherings of up to 20 people as per government guidelines. And because Accor is about going the extra mile, the hospitality group has partnered up with insurance bigwig AXA to provide medical support to guests across all the hotels in the group’s portfolio. Al Areen Palace & Spa by Accor set out on a mission to protect both its guests and team, ensuring that travellers know they can feel safe throughout their stay. Mission accomplished. ✤

“
NO ONE ANTICIPATED THE TYPE OF RADICAL DISRUPTION THAT WE FACED BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC." - LATIFA AL-KHALIFA
C
hange happens in our rapidly evolving world, but no one anticipated the type of radical disruption that we faced because of the pandemic." So begins our conversation with Latifa Al-Khalifa, co-founder and CEO of Clever Play. The STEAM educational platform inspires children to discover their passion for science, technology, engineering, arts, and maths so they can be engaged in the learning process – as opposed to hitting targets. This is executed through the likes of camps, educational kits, and – most recently – virtual programs. "We’re fortunate that our online platform was in the pipeline since mid-2019. The sudden shift in learning environments forced us to adapt quickly, starting new streams of service even before we were ready and recalibrating our steps along the way," says Latifa of her new normal. The entrepreneur misses the normalcy of children "tinkering their way to discovery", as she so eloquently puts it, and dubs the present a transition. "It’s hard to think of it as some sort of normal when situations change by the day and uncertainty hangs heavily in the air. I'm inspired by how Satya Nadella framed the three phases of our current reality: restore, recover, reimagine. The first is about getting back out there and carrying on our service intentions to the extent that they’re doable. The second has us keeping stock of what is working for us and troubleshooting our way into getting customers back. The third is one to be sustained in 2021, using creativity as we renew
18

connections and reinvent our presence. This means expanding our presence through products that take learning safely to children’s doorsteps." In the meantime, Latifa is still looking to the past few months, analysing the role of entrepreneurs. "As far as our niche is concerned, parents, educators, and the youth can rest assured we are continually finding ways to offer relevant services, even in this uncharted territory. We'd like to see them engaging more with local entrepreneurs, speaking up because it's their stories and actions that guide our efforts." Here, she highlights how a breakdown of normalcy paved the way for new ideas and intentions. "Yes, so many opportunities were lost, yet the pandemic opened doors like never before. I was amazed at how much we were able to expand the brand beyond Clever Play through podcasts, webinars, and interactive platforms." At a time when the traditional models of education are questioned, we discuss the future of such innovations with Latifa. She says that while Clever Play operates in a handson environment, the pandemic pushed it out of its comfort zone. "It forced us to incorporate so much of the face-to-face methodologies that reap clear achievement outcomes into the virtual plane. What most schools are discovering is that evolving would recreate the online experience so it can deliver what many say it falls short on: peer interaction. On the upside, this shift is doing us a favour by putting a spotlight on the need to get kids learning beyond the books." ✤

Y
ou take what the day brings," is how Yusuf Bukhammas begins to describe his new normal. The founder of ThisFoodTour saw his popular walking food tours come to a standstill earlier this year. "I stopped operating before the situation got out of control and all the restaurants were forced to close because people weren't going out as much." At the crossroads of tourism and dining, he's in an industry that is especially hard hit. "My tours take place in Manama Souq, which is the heart of Bahrain and brimming with history, but it isn't somewhere people want to go at the moment as it's densely populated. It's completely out of my hands. I'm lucky to still have my full-time job as a videographer." Yusuf tells us that 85 per cent of the people attending his tours were tourists, many of whom came from cruise ships. The conversation turns to the MS Roald Amundsen, which faced backlash after a recent voyage resulted in 41 passengers and crew testing positive for COVID-19. "There's certainly no cruise ships coming to Bahrain anytime soon, but travellers are still the people I want to serve because ThisFoodTour is not just about food, but also the history behind each stop. While they're getting to know Bahrain’s culture, they're bringing Austria, Canada, Australia to me. The bonding happens while you're biting." What's unfortunate is that dining at old-school eateries entails dishes that have been prepared by hand, sharing platters of
food with complete strangers – nuances that quickly went from charming to unnerving in 2020. After researching how food tours worldwide have coped, delivering boxes with items from each stop, Yusuf is unable to envision a drastically different reality. “I'd rather not tweak my tours and take away from their purpose. I don't want to take people to street food hotspots with them wearing gloves and feeling paranoid while sanitising everything in sight. I still want the laughs and the hugs to happen," he says nostalgically. "My sole purpose is not to make money, that's why I'm waiting until things get slightly back to normal – and I rather not set a timeline. That would only lead to disappointment. Luckily, getting back on track won't be difficult. I can simply open up the tours on the calendar once restaurants reopen." And until that day comes, Yusuf will continue to reflect. "My relationship with food has changed a lot. I've always loved food, but I never got to experience it in terms of gastronomy. The pandemic has forced me to slow down, so I watch series like Somebody Feed Phil with Google Maps open on my phone, marking every place that Philip Rosenthal visits. There's now 200 restaurants around the world that I want to visit." Meanwhile, witnessing the opening of new restaurants in Bahrain, Yusuf says he’s happy to see fellow entrepreneurs taking a risk circa now. "If restaurants can operate these days simply by offering home delivery, why not? I say do whatever it takes to survive.”✤

“
EVEN WHEN THINGS FEEL OVERWHELMING, IT'S IMPERATIVE TO SOLDIER ON – OUT OF ADVERSITY COMES OPPORTUNITY." - MAHA ALSAHHAF AND JAYNE HOUGHTON
T
he pandemic brought events like concerts, food festivals, and trade shows to a standstill, and Bahrain Popup Market was no exception unfortunately. "Our operations were among the first to be directly affected and will be the last to be reinstated, so we know the burdens faced by people," say founder Maha Alsahhaf and co-founder Jayne Houghton. But necessity is the mother of invention, as they say, so Bahrain Popup Market is now in the process of launching a digital marketplace. Entitled ThePopUpShop.co, it will launch on October 1 and serve as a natural progression of its pop-ups. "Online, we can create captivating content to ensure people stop, stare, click, and buy 365 days a year." Both Maha and Jayne have long lived by 'support local', a motto that has led to their events selling out and hosting a large footfall of customers. “Bahrain Popup Market has always been at the very heart of the community and a place for local businesses to thrive," they say. "Our sole purpose has always been to provide a platform for artisans to display and sell their items to a wide audience, therefore we had no choice but to pivot. Building an online marketplace is definitely the best solution as people’s spending habits diversify. Our new normal is working tirelessly towards creating a digitalised platform to support these creatives." Revealing more about how their concept is evolving, the duo adds: "Many small businesses have been badly affected since the pandemic began, and they've had to find other ways of reaching their clients. For some, that was impossible and, for 20
fact magazine
others, the problem was how to do it and where to begin. This is why we're launching ThePopupShop.co to not only support local artisans, but also provide an alternate experience to visitors who would regularly attend our markets. This will continue to give vendors the sales opportunities they've become accustomed to during our events, while creating an online community where we can all support the economy through purchasing curated pieces from talented individuals across the region." Today, as the two entrepreneurs look forward to the days of interacting with their vendors face-to-face and hosting "bigger and better" outdoor events, Bahrain Popup Market is enlisted on an innovative programme called SC Women in Tech that supports female entrepreneurs and their digital vision. "Out of over 120 applications, we were fortunate to be one of the 26 that were accepted into the 56-hour virtual challenge to make it through to the final 11 as part of an eight-week incubation programme," explains Jayne. "Standard Chartered Bank, Supreme Council for Women, and Bahrain FinTechBay have provided us an abundance of support as well as unparalleled access to the movers and shakers of Bahrain." As for what 2020 taught them? "We've learnt that even when things feel overwhelming, it's imperative to soldier on – out of adversity comes opportunity."✤

• NEW NORMAL for chadō. "It's not just a tea ceremony, it is a way of life. The practice itself acts as a moving meditation to reduce stress and anxiety. Chadō teaches self-discipline, patience, appreciation of nature, and how to see life from a different perspective,” she explains. She recently embodied this practice by celebrating the Japanese festival of Tanabata with a virtual tea gathering while reminding her Instagram followers to find beauty in simplicity. Budoor the entrepreneur, meanwhile, is grateful that part of Chawan's business model has been virtual as it offers online tea classes and workshops. "The changes for us were not being able to welcome people at the teahouse, host cultural events, organise chadō performances, or offer workshops. What I would carry over into 2021 is a greater appreciation for this time we get to spend with people. An idiom we often keep in mind is 'Ichigo Ichie', which conveys that every encounter is a once-in-a-lifetime interaction that won’t be repeated in the same way. Thus, every moment is special." Now, Budoor is looking forward to hosting people, serving tea, and "sharing the beauty of the tea world". She's also eager to celebrate Japanese festivals such as Tanabata (star festival), Tsukimi (moon-viewing festival), and others in the tearoom." And till that day comes, she’s appreciative of the support she has received over the past few months. "I created a temporary menu so everyone could enjoy our delights until we reopen. It includes onigiri, date-filled mochi, and handcrafted sweets known as nerikiri – and the orders have been a crucial part of Chawan’s continuity during the pandemic." ✤ Images by George Mathew
I
n contrast, Budoor Al Murbati-Steele, founder of Japanese teahouse Chawan, says her new normal didn't entail changes as drastic as others experienced. She first found her calling through hanami, the Japanese tradition of enjoying tea under the beauty of cherry blossoms, so it's no surprise that the beverage was a steady companion through quarantine. "Before the pandemic, I would spend a significant portion of my time practising chadō (the Way of Tea), teaching online classes as a tea instructor for International Tea Education Institute, and processing orders for Chawan’s online shop. I'm now able to invest more time enhancing my tea knowledge and skills. Even though I can't travel to Japan as frequently as I did before, I utilise technology – I'm taking more chadō classes with my sensei in Japan and a business development course with UNIDO." The tea master has also been contemplating freedom and family, precious things we often take for granted. “The current situation has been challenging in different ways for each individual. However, it's important to consider every obstacle a learning opportunity for growth." We discuss how often Japan has made headlines in 2020 – its culture of collectivism and practices like forest bathing have been recognised worldwide. Here at home, Budoor is full of praise

Few entities have garnered as much attention during the pandemic as co-working spaces. On one hand, they filled the void left by traditional offices closing for months on end. On the other, the idea of sharing an enclosed space with multiple people was hardly appealing. Enter: Salman Mattar and Abdulrahman AlSayed, co-founders of Space340. Pre-pandemic, this was a place where like-minded people worked and played. The community hub and co-working space has reopened its doors, and Salman tells us they've had to be both reactive and proactive. "I don’t think Space340 is at a new normal yet. As part of our social responsibility of helping reduce the spread of the virus, we had to temporarily close all in-person services as we've been forced into what is probably the largest work experiment to date. We've had to constantly readjust our operations to keep connecting with the community and stay afloat. Now, despite reopening with all the new measures in place, I think it’ll still be a period of testing the waters. It’s exciting and uncertain, but we're staying optimistic." And adding to that optimism is the thought of gathering again. "Prior to recent months, we held free workshops every month, and the completely unprompted socialising and networking that followed was such a mood booster for the mid-week blues." Space340 is beloved for its seminars, speaker sessions, workshops, and hands-on activities, but 2020 had other plans, forcing its founders to improvise. "We've experimented with video series, webinars, and online workshops in the past few months. Not only have they helped us connect with people beyond our area, but they've also given us a chance to elevate even more diverse voices and continue building on an inclusive culture of learning. And through it all, the support of the community towards local businesses was such a joy to see. For a company that advocates community-building, it was so fulfilling to see it in action." 24
fact magazine
Like their peers, Salman and Abdulrahman plan to carry aspects of their new normal into the future. "We want to continue bringing the experience online to as many people as possible." But it's safe to say co-working spaces are set to thrive as companies look to cut costs and adopt a more flexible mindset, courtesy of coronavirus. "I think co-working spaces will play a huge role in the future when it comes to working from home," says Salman. "Companies can decentralise work, and employees can be closer to home while remaining productive – it's all about giving people options on where, when, and how to work. Everything else beyond the physical space provided by a co-working space is an added bonus. And it's our responsibility to provide an experience that would enrich members’ lives beyond their jobs. At the end of the day, we’re community-makers first, space-operators second."✤

• NEW NORMAL He refers to his new project, The Nourishers, as a corona baby. "It was born at the beginning of this year, and will be a tool to connect users to wellness coaches from around the globe, online and offline. After all, this phase of our lives has only proven how precious health is, so The Nourishers will serve as a catalyst to improve the quality of people’s lives." Here, Hamad takes a moment to acknowledge the support he received as an entrepreneur in the midst of a pandemic. "I want to extend my gratitude to Bahrain for how it handled this situation and the help I've gotten. As a result, I was able to pay it forward, promoting other businesses and sometimes offering my services free of charge. A country gains its power from its people, so the more we unite, the stronger we'll get." Hamad does, however, understand that turning to the likes of life coaches, therapists, and nutritionists is a luxury at a time of financial uncertainty. "While the pandemic helped people understand the value of self-care, some were afraid to pay for such services as they didn't know what to expect next. And then there are those who think our services aren't a necessity. I always advise such people to understand the importance of selfinvestment as the ROI is guaranteed." But Hamad is glad to report that he has seen people more invested in their health. "Many might not consider seeking help, yet they're dedicating time to staying active and cooking at home. It makes me happy as that’s the aim behind what we're doing as coaches – we give our clients the tools and guidance to depend on themselves, so that self-care becomes embedded in their lifestyles. Still, it's important to consider working with experts as they will draw a road map with continuous monitoring, so you can just focus on your journey and enjoy the process." On a personal level, Hamad says the challenges of the past few months have helped him connect with people on a deeper level, but physical connection is what he misses. "We’re mammals, we live in communities, and the human touch is something crucial that we've been deprived of. Handshakes, hugs, being close to family and friends – that’s what I am looking forward to."✤

o conversation about the pandemic would be complete without mentioning the havoc it has wreaked on the health of people worldwide, both physical and mental, putting holistic health and wellness into the spotlight like never before. So what do experts in the field have to say? Police-officerturned-holistic-health-coach Hamad Al Saad explains that while he doesn't subscribe to the phrase 'new normal', we do have to shift some of our thoughts, habits, and behaviours. "We need to align with the circumstances so we don’t go against the current, which might lead to stress and anxiety. I also remind people to occasionally check on themselves to be able to understand their emotions and feel more in control." 26

I
t's only understandable when Nada Al-Barzinji needs a moment to succinctly sum up her new normal. "It's a hard question," says the founder of Breathe Pilates Studio, which was allowed to reinstate its in-studio classes last month. "It's hard because I was home for over five months. I suddenly stopped working after working so hard for nearly 10 years. Before, all I did was say I'm tired, and then to not be tired anymore – to just be free," she reflects as her voice trails off. "My norm was to teach six to eight hours in a row, back to back without a proper break, so my new norm is that I just can't teach that way anymore. It can't happen because of the new health and social distancing guidelines. Now, clients have to book in advance, get their temperatures taken, all that sanitising – it's all very new to us. These are things I didn't have to think of before." 28
fact magazine
The long-term expat first discovered Pilates after her son had an accident that forced her to quit her banking job and stay home. A desire to remain active paired with a family history of back problems piqued her interest in the fitness system and, today, she is a BASI Pilates instructor who's incredibly passionate about her clientele and community. "You build friendships, you build relationships through Pilates – you even become their therapist a little bit. I love what I do. I love helping people look and feel better." And it's this love that eased her apprehension about reopening the studio. " I was nervous to go back, but if I don't work, I won't have Breathe, so I had to put aside my fear of getting sick. For now, I'm taking it slowly and following guidelines. There used to be five teachers working at a time, now there's two. That means we can't make money the way we used to, but it's something we have to do to ensure everyone's safe."

“
IT'S CRUCIAL THAT WE SUPPORT EACH OTHER, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THE SIZE OF BAHRAIN CAN BE A DISADVANTAGE."
Like other entrepreneurs, Nada recognises the merits of the virtual world. "When we shut down, we questioned how we could conduct sessions over Zoom, especially with newer teachers who were still building their client bases. But online classes have been a real eye-opener. We have a client who's continuing her sessions online as she tends to a sick parent abroad, for example. That was never considered an option before. Personally, I've been training with my teachers in California and back home in Washington, DC. It's been amazing because we're all still doing what needs to be done." And like her peers, Nada is vocal about the need to support local. "It's crucial that we support each other, especially because the size of Bahrain can be a disadvantage. Otherwise, none of us will be around. We, as a family, sometimes force ourselves to order from someplace we like in order to help out. Even BD10, BD20 helps businesses, you know?" ✤ fact magazine

BIG SCREEN PROJECT POWER

LOVECRAFT COUNTRY WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
When a pill that gives its users unpredictable superpowers for five minutes hits the streets of New Orleans, a teenager and a local cop must team up with an ex-soldier to take down the group responsible for its creation.
DIRECTOR: Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman CAST: Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dominique Fishback
WHY IS IT WORTH WATCHING?
The latest film to be released on streaming giant Netflix is Project Power. Looking to capitalise on the current trend for all things superheroes, this big-budget production doesn’t examine the usual superhero tropes or origin story. Instead, it throws us straight into chaotic and impressively staged action sequences from the get-go. Hollywood A-listers Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt put in great performances, but it’s relative newcomer Dominique Fishback who will likely capture the attention of audiences. The concept of a pill that can provide temporary access to superpowers is a novel one and, while the film does take time in setting up the premise, it’s a thrilling one hour and 53 minutes of screen time supported by some remarkable visual effects once the action hits.

Lovecraft Country follows Atticus Black as he joins up with his friend Letitia and his uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father. This begins a struggle to survive the terrifying monsters that could be ripped straight from a H.P. Lovercraft paperback.
CREATORS: Misha Green, Jordan Peele CAST: Jonathan Majors, Jurnee Smollett, Courtney B. Vance
WHY IS IT WORTH WATCHING?
Based on Matt Ruff’s novel of the same name, Lovecraft Country is executive produced by showrunner Misha Green along with J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele, so based on the talent involved we were expecting big things. The eight-episode first season follows our central trio as they traverse Jim Crow America in search of a missing relative and discover so much more than they had anticipated along the way. The series couldn’t have debuted at a better time as it tackles a lot of present-day issues and poses the ultimate question in the process: are people scarier than monsters? What starts out as a drama offset with uneasy framing and a prevalent sense of dread turns into an all-out horror assault by the end of episode one! It’s this remarkable ability to balance genres while also providing social commentary that makes Lovecraft Country a compelling watch from start to finish.

B7
By Brandy
B7 is the seventh studio album by R&B songstress Brandy and her first studio album in eight years following the success of 2012’s Two Eleven. Having been in the entertainment industry from a very young age, it is no surprise that Brandy co-wrote and co-produced 14 of the 15 songs on this new album that focuses on themes of self-love, motherhood and the examination of romantic relationships. B7 is a cathartic listening experience that begins with “Saving All My Love”, a track that works as an apology to the fans for Brandy’s musical absence. The album then works through its intricate examination of relationships, and this is never more present than on standout track “Borderline”, which sees Brandy self-reflect and confront the weaknesses within her own relationships. Guest features are sparing on B7 but the Chance the Rapper assisted “Baby Mama” is an upbeat look at single motherhood, while Daniel Caesar lends his vocals to the sultry “Love Again”. The final track is perhaps one of the most honest pieces of music in Brandy’s catalogue as she discusses her mental health issues and newfound positivity with the memorable “Bye BiPolar”. After such a prolonged absence, it’s great to see this R&B heavyweight return to form. 32

AFROBEATS
Twice As Tall
By Burna Boy Having featured on tracks for big names such as Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Dave, Jorja Smith and J Hus, 2020 is definitely Burna Boy’s year. Now, only one year after the release of his last album, the Nigerian star is back with his latest project, Twice As Tall. Burna Boy is exceptionally confident and cleverly uses African music meshed with hip-hop, R&B, dancehall and reggae influences to create a unique musical style with mass appeal. The opening track “Level Up” features a looped sample from the 1959 movie Journey to the Centre of the Earth to startling effect, while guest appearances include the likes of Chris Martin on “Monsters You Made” (a track about Burna’s disenchantment), and UK rapper Stormzy on “Real Life”. Yet, it’s the crossover appeal of Burna Boy’s music that makes his fifth studio project such an exciting listen. Executive produced by Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, this project couldn’t have arrived at a better time as it rides the meteoric rise of Afrobeats in popular culture.
By Stephanie Meyer From the author of the Twilight saga comes a new look at the series that has enraptured millions of readers worldwide. This unforgettable new take on the romance between mortal and vampire takes on a new and decidedly dark twist and is essential reading for all you Twihards and fanpires.

EAR CANDY Bang & Olufsen’s first foray into sports is small but mighty – and splurge-worthy. Hey, remember how 2020 managed to turn an outdoor run into a luxury overnight? That memory alone ought to ease the sticker shock of Bang & Olufsen’s first foray into sports: Beoplay E8 Sport. Not only do these sleek wireless earphones pair the Danish brand’s superior sound quality with features requested by professional athletes and casual runners alike, but they’re also designed to brave the elements. Beoplay E8 Sport is housed in a compact wireless charging case where performance-driven materials from the sports universe (read: rubber and textured silicone) and corrosion-resistant anodised aluminium (a Bang & Olufsen trademark for over 50 years) come together. Thoughtful design details such as a ridged gripped detail on the earphones help adjustments when fingers are wet and sweaty, while earphones can switch between tracks, take calls, and activate Transparency Mode with a simple tap or swipe in order to avoid stopping mid-run. “There are three elements that people are specifically looking for in a set of sports earphones: a waterproof and customisable design that brings comfort to long runs and workouts, playtime that lasts way beyond the finish line and, most importantly, excellent sound quality – everyone tells us that nothing is more important than powerful music that can motivate, push you further, and perform at your best,” says Christoffer Poulsen, VP of Product Management. 36

True to the Bang & Olufsen DNA, bragging rights are involved. Here, they come courtesy of the IP57 certification that protects Beoplay E8 Sport from dust, sweat, and water intrusion of up to one meter for 30 minutes. The earphones also come with a variety of five removable ear tips and three fins for the perfect fit, so you can focus on what truly matters: music. ✤

THE NOVA FACTOR Meet your next go-to smartphone HUAWEI nova 7 5G for crisp photos and exceptional videos.
W
ith the smartphone game continually evolving, users expect more and more from their handheld devices as lives are quite literally planned in the palm of our hands. Huawei has come to the rescue when it comes to smartphone enhancements and camera functionality with the launch of its trendy new handset, the HUAWEI nova 7 5G. Packed full of exciting hardware and new features, the flagship smartphone features a high-resolution 64MP AI Quad Camera that is designed for all scenarios – bright beaches and dark restaurants included. The 7nm Kirin 985 5G chipset supports the 5G network while offering robust performance and powerful image processing. Having had our hands on the latest Huawei device for the last few days, we are excited not only by the impressive camera and extended battery life, but also the slim design that feels significantly lighter than we are accustomed to. The feel in the hand is an absolute pleasure and the lightweight design adds to the ease of use, especially when it comes to texting. Our smartphones have become replacements for bulky cameras when it comes to documenting our lives on Instagram, and the HUAWEI nova 7 5G offers uncomplicated shooting paired with uncompromising quality. At the same time, nighttime shooting is seamless thanks to Huawei’s 4-in-1 pixel binning technology that captures more light to produce brighter and clearer photos. The phone also features an 8MP Ultra Wide Angle Lens to capture expansive landscapes or those tricky group shots. The addition of an 8MP Telephoto Lens and a 2MP Macro allows you to shoot in great detail, whether you are up close or far away. Capturing videos, however, is where the HUAWEI nova 7 5G truly shines and the phone supports high-resolution 4K capture in all settings, including time-lapse. But our favourite feature has to be the new dual-view video mode that allows you to capture footage from both the front and rear cameras at the same time! This is a real gamechanger, enabling you to capture selfies and reactions, and will prove particularly useful for YouTubers and vloggers. When it comes to battery life, Huawei devices impress us time and again – and the nova 7 5G is no different. You’ll likely be out and about all day long without having to charge your phone with this one. The hardware and build should also be noted; even after 20 minutes of intense gameplay that pushes the phone to its full capacity, the device does not get hot, an unfortunate reality that we’ve experienced with other devices all too often. Finally, the ease at which content can be shared across your social media platforms should be applauded, for HUAWEI nova 7 5G comes pre-installed with the Huawei AppGallery, meaning all your favourite apps are available for easy download. And further help is at hand through the nifty Petal Search Widget - Find Apps, which currently supports over 40 languages and is available in 45 countries and regions, with plans for wider rollout to even more countries in the future. It will help you find apps that aren’t on the AppGallery, and is now available to download. ✤

ay what you want about the pace of urbanisation in Bahrain, but old really is gold, if the work of Noura Al Sayeh is any indication. The architect is currently Head of Architectural Affairs at Bahrain Authority for Culture & Antiquities (BACA), a government organisation that is continuing its relentless efforts to preserve Bahrain's past – even through the series of setbacks that is 2020. Earlier this year, 550 historic buildings, mosques, temples, and other sites in old Manama were surveyed for a new preservation list. Meanwhile, as part of the Revitalisation of Muharraq project (which won the esteemed Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2019), the pearling city and former capital remains the focal point as the country's architectural heritage is restored. "I oversee the different architectural projects of BACA, which includes many different responsibilities. Most importantly, it’s a position that – thanks to the leadership of H.E. Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al-Khalifa, President of BACA – comes with a lot of freedom to take initiative, step outside the boundaries of a prescribed job, and suggest ideas ranging from organising competitions and exhibitions to projects that I think are relevant to the work we're doing," says Noura, elaborating on
42

her role. As the Revitalisation of Muharraq project evolved, so did Noura's focus. She is currently spearheading a longterm project centred around the Pearling Path, a 3.5km trail that snakes through the storied alleys of Muharraq. Not only is the idea to rehabilitate this urban centre of yesteryear, but also introduce contemporary infrastructure that matches the modern-day lifestyles of current residents. "I actually wish more people knew about it altogether and would visit the projects that have already been completed," she says of Pearling, Testimony of an Island Economy, a site that has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2012. "Later in the year, we are working on a special event that we hope will encourage more people to come and wander the streets of Muharraq! Many people also don’t know that Pearling Path includes 17 public squares that are dotted along the different neighbourhoods that the path crosses, with strategically placed lamp posts guiding you through the streets." For an optimum introduction to the path and insights into the unique legacy of Bahrain’s pearling era, visitors are encouraged to start their visit at Bu Mahir Fort (from where boats used to set off for the oyster beds) and Bu Mahir Interpretative Centre.
ARTS & CULTURE •
Elsewhere in area, renovation of Murad House – which will eventually be a boutique hotel – has started, while the contract for a multi-storey car park was awarded earlier this year. According to UNESCO, the site is the last remaining complete example of the pearling tradition and the wealth it generated at a time when trade dominated the regional economy. This was the case until the 1930s, when Japan developed cultured pearls and everything changed. Soon after, the discovery of oil and gas resources in Bahrain led to the further decline of the pearling economy – and Muharraq’s significance and cultural identity as a result. Conservation work on derelict structures has been ongoing since 2011, and the project was scheduled to be completed by this year. But did 2020 have other plans? "Luckily, we were at a stage of the project where most of our contracts are now under construction. Yes, there have been some delays on
"From its passive cooling methods to the use of local resources such as coral stone, it was architecture from and of a place," she explains. "It's also architecture that is very contemporary in its functionality and simplicity." As Noura and her team continue to conduct citywide fieldwork, she says the diversity of Bahrain's natural and built heritage, despite the country's relatively small size, still surprises her – even 10 years later. And like all things small, the word ‘charming’ is frequently associated with Muharraq. "I think what makes most historic cities more appealing than new developments is their organic and layered nature, which holds the history of many generations and therefore has a richness that is difficult to replicate." Looking ahead, Noura is gearing up for Bahrain's participation on global platforms, namely Venice Architecture Biennale and Expo Dubai in 2021. "Bahrain’s

he mere approach to Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa speaks volumes about what awaits: a property that is as palatial on the outside as it is inviting on the inside. A stay here is hardly utilitarian in nature. It’s about the luxury of escape, even if for a night, at a time when our “new normal” still feels unrecognisable – but more on that later. Bright and spacious, Sofitel Bahrain is a contemporary oasis of sorts. The beach resort is reminiscent of a shell beside the blue waters of Zallaq’s coast, gently curving around the white-sand bay. Meanwhile, a preponderance of marble and light fixtures offers contrast to dark hardwoods, tessellated ceilings, and other Arabesque accents. You’re set, regardless of where you end up. Naturally, checking into a hotel – any hotel – in today's world brings with it a bit of a novelty factor. But despite the pandemic still making headlines and rattling nerves, Sofitel Bahrain stands in a league of its own. The property recently received the new ALLSAFE certification that is vetted by Bureau Veritas, becoming one of the first in Bahrain to achieve this feat. But let's backtrack. Sofitel is a member of Accor, a hospitality group that considers the health and well-being of its guests and employees a key aspect of its DNA – long before face masks became the must-have accessory of 2020. To that end, Accor has established some of the most stringent cleaning standards and operational procedures in the world of hospitality to ensure guest safety as its properties reopen around the world. These standards had been developed alongside the aforementioned Bureau Veritas – a global leader in testing, inspections, and certification – under the ALLSAFE cleanliness and prevention label. Here in Bahrain, Sofitel has been audited to achieve this label, which means you can be assured of things like frequent disinfection of high-touch areas, enhanced in-room cleaning using hospital-grade cleaning materials, temperature checks, contactless payment solutions, and more. grounds showcases such practices in motion. Signs remind guests to keep a safe distance, staff members consistently wear masks. It's important to add that biosecurity protocols are also followed. Case in point: all of our bags were misted down with barbicide prior to entering the premises, while a partition at the front desk served to protect us during check-in. From the outset, it was clear that for Sofitel Bahrain, the safety of guests is no light matter. Any foodie worth their salt knows that the hotel boasts some of the best eateries in the city, but as per government guidelines at the time of writing, restaurants can only accept dine-in reservations for groups of up to 20 people. Don't let that deter you, though, as the in-room dining has something for everyone. You access the menu by scanning the QR grid in your room – another noteworthy precautionary measure – to find a selection that pairs local traditions with global flavours while serving the usual suspects, too. Admittedly, the varying ambiences of the resort's different restaurants is part of the experience of staying at Sofitel Bahrain, but the stunning views and creature comforts of your room sure will help – as will the indulgent Lotus Caramel Cheesecake that we can personally vouch for. MEET:
THE MG RX8 THE ALL-NEW RX8 IS ESTABLISHING ITSELF AS A MAJOR CONTENDER IN THE SUV SEGMENT.

D
espite the fact that MG Motor was established in the 1920s, the brand has been slow in gaining the level of popularity enjoyed by other wellknown car manufacturers. However, through the ever-increasing surge in MG Motor vehicle sales, we are now witnessing that this is swiftly changing. Best known for producing two-seater sports cars, MG Motor – now under Chinese ownership – went on to develop a variety of saloon models and, eventually, coupés. FACT got to experience the brand’s first sports utility vehicle, the MG GS, back in 2016 and immediately recognised this manufacturer’s potential to develop competitive models for this market segment. This month, we were offered the opportunity by the great team at Zayani Motors to test drive the all-new MG RX8, an offer we readily accepted. As the RX8 came into view for the first time, we were struck by the bold yet uncomplicated design of the exterior. At the front end, the dual-slot bonnet complemented by a silver lower lip delivers a touch of class, while the chrome grille and matrix-style LED foglamps add a modern touch. The authoritative presence of the RX8 is enhanced by its smooth body lines, seamlessly connecting the design of the front end to that of the rear. The 20-inch alloy wheels, meanwhile, hint at the vehicle’s on-road intentions. And showcasing the quality of this model are the LED tail lights, LED headlamps, and LED daytime running lights – along with the roof spoiler and stylish twin chrome exhaust, both of which are worthy of a mention. Once inside the cabin, it was plain to see why MG is fast gaining a reputation for delivering premium finishes – highend materials such chrome, wood grain, and soft-touch trim ensure the interior of the RX8 has a first-class feel to it. The topquality leather used for the seating was provided by German company Bader, a leading manufacturer of premium leather for the automotive industry. Not only are these ventilated seats exceptionally comfortable, but also well-positioned, with the front two seats being multi-adjustable. Space and practicality are areas of design where the RX8 begins to rise above the competition. An ingenious “theatrestyle” seating design has incorporated a front-to-rear gradient, ensuring that even the third row of passengers are gifted with an exceptional view. The adjustable reach in the second row of seating provides third-row passengers easy access to their seats, while the ample legroom on offer is the largest thirdrow space in the class. It’s safe to say this flexible nature of the rear seats allows for varied combinations of seating layouts that will meet all travel requirements. Besides the 37 different storage compartments found throughout the vehicle, the boot capacity can be extended to a whopping 2,178 litres – that’s room for up to nine large suitcases, in case you’re curious. MG models are currently renowned for offering some of the finest and most user-friendly technology available in motor vehicles. This includes, as standard, wireless phone charging and smartphone connectivity with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, linked to a 10-inch colour touchscreen. DualZone Climate Control, with additional climate control in the 56

rear, is yet another standard feature for this model, while the panoramic sunroof ensures a well-lit interior. An interesting component of the RX8 is the inclusion of three standard appliance plugs that allow you to use a variety of household products inside your vehicle. This is an ideal feature for road trips, and one that is only shared with the latest Range Rover models. Considering the RX8 is powered by an efficient 220 hp, 2.0-litre petrol engine that boasts Net Blue Technology and produces a maximum torque of 360 Nm, this car is clearly no toy. Combined with a six-speed automatic gearbox complete with paddle-shift gear change, the it’s also an enjoyable vehicle to drive. A total of six different driving modes means the model’s advanced 4x4 system that can conquer any offroad conditions in the Gulf. And as expected, switching to Sport mode immediately provides a superior driving experience, vastly increasing the vehicle’s responsiveness and acceleration. As for our experience with the braking system? It’s effective and offers great traction control, ensuring you

always feel in control of the driving experience, even around tricky bends. So let’s talk safety. The RX8 has been equipped with an impressive range of features that have earned it a fivestar C-NCAP rating. These include Active Rollover Protection, front and rear sensors with a rear-view camera as well as front, side, and curtain airbags, amongst others. The LUX trim also includes ADAS features like the Lane Departure Warning System, helping to ensure the safety of everyone within. Overall, our verdict on the RX8 is that it’s where style meets substance, a model that will ensure MG’s competitive place in the SUV segment. ✤

THRILLS ON TAP COME COURTESY OF BENTLEY’S NEW BENTAYGA
If you’re seeking the benchmark for luxury SUVs, it’s here: the new Bentayga Speed by Bentley Motors. And if recently revealed details tell us anything, it’s that luxury wasn’t sacrificed for performance, with the new model in the award-winning Bentayga family combining the W12 powertrain and many of the models’ luxurious features as standard – including the Mulliner Driving Specification. “Ahead of the launch of the new Bentayga Hybrid – the world’s only definitive luxury hybrid – in the coming months, it’s important that we still recognise the customer desire for absolute performance. The new Bentayga Speed remains the fastest SUV in the world, but more than that, it’s also the most luxurious version of the new Bentayga – the best of both worlds, the pinnacle,” says Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and Chief Executive. Not only does the model maintain the performance credentials proved by its predecessor (which claimed the production SUV record at the gruelling Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2018), but it also builds on the completely refreshed design of the new Bentayga, adopting the same design DNA that is now prevalent across the British marque’s entire model range. When it comes to specs, the new Bentayga Speed amplifies the Bentayga’s extraordinary abilities, the aforementioned 6.0-litre W12 twin-turbocharged engine delivering peak power of 635 PS (626 bhp). Acceleration is effortless thanks to 900 Nm of torque, 60

available as a plateau from 1,500 rpm to 5,000 rpm. Its maximum speed is also increased to 190 mph (306 km/h), while the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint is delivered in a mere 3.9 seconds. To appropriately use this level of power, the model is equipped with four on-road Drive Dynamics modes: Comfort at one extreme, Sport at the other, Bentley mode (recommended by Bentley’s chassis team in Crewe), and a Custom mode for customers who wish to create their own driving set-up. As for aesthetics? Dark-tint headlights and tail lamps, complemented by a dark tint matrix grille and lower bumper grilles as well as body-coloured elements exclusive to the Bentayga Speed, make for a captivating exterior. Inside, a colour split option incorporates tactile Alcantara elements and unique colour accents to create a truly distinctive look. This striking option also adds contrast stitching to the quilting, completing the backrest with the ultimate statement of craftsmanship. But a Bentley’s interiors wouldn’t be complete without a cuttingedge infotainment system. Enter: a 10.9-inch high-resolution touchscreen, which now spans the entire width of the centre fascia, accompanied by a customisable dashboard, an advanced navigation system, and an array of in-car and remote services.

BRAGGING RIGHTS: THE 101 ON MASERATI’S FASTEST SEDANS YET
At a time when the world is embracing a slower pace of life, Maserati is going against the grain – again. The Italian's marque has released not one, but two new additions to its Trofeo family: Ghibli and Quattroporte. Not only are they the fastest Maserati sedans to date, but they also join luxury SUV Levante in highlighting the brand’s all-Italian DNA. The colours chosen for the launch are those of the country’s flag: green for Quattroporte, white for Levante, and red for Ghibli, all of which combine with burnished chrome-work and glossy red trims for an aggressive yet elegant look. As for the pièce de résistance? A bold V8 engine built at the Ferrari plant and developed to deliver equally impressive performances on the rear-engine sedans. Additional specs reveal a power output of 580 HP at 6,250 rpm and peak torque of 730 Nm. Although a first for Ghibli, the V8 engine has already been used in the past on the 530 HP version of the Quattroporte GTS. Today, the 580 HP V8 engine is available on the new Ghibli, Quattroporte, and Levante Trofeo models in full compliance with fuel efficiency and emissions standards. The result? Both Ghibli and Quattroporte Trofeo can claim a top speed of 326 km/h. Like their predecessor, the new models also incorporate the Integrated Vehicle Control system, with a specific set-up that
guarantees enhanced driving dynamics, greater active safety, and – you guessed it – the type of thrills that only this luxury label can provide. Also included is Launch Control (a function that first appeared on Levante Trofeo) to fully unleash the engine’s power. Admittedly, while it's the engine sound that sets every Maserati apart, the Trofeo collection will be made distinct as a result of special accents – read: twin vertical bars in a Black Piano finish on the front grille and the introduction of carbon fibre on the front air duct trims and rear extractor. Over at the rear, the light clusters have been completely restyled, with a boomerang-like profile inspired by the 3200 GT and Alfieri concept car. The Trofeo characterisation continues inside, with a new onboard panel that displays an exclusive interface once on, while the headrests bear the Trofeo badge with the name in 3D relief. The exclusivity also extends to the interior upholstery, courtesy of full-grain Pieno Fiore leather. And come day-to-day driving, the assisted driving function can now be activated on ordinary highways and urban roads thanks to Active Driving Assist. Sold.

Executive chef Brian Becher refers to a meal at CUT by Wolfgang Puck as "relationship dining" rather than fine dining. “The ethos of who we are is about our relationship to the ingredients (be that excitement or curiosity or passion or affinity), our guests' relationship to the food we serve them, and our personal relationship with our guests. Good music, beautiful décor, ample parking, amazing views… these things are great and certainly help. But at its core, I believe the relationships we have with our guests is key, and I don't think this will ever change.” What has changed over the course of the pandemic, however, is his perspective on the principle of trust.
“Many of our regular guests were, and still are, ordering takeaway and delivery from us two or three times a week. They tell us they feel safe and comfortable ordering from us because they trust us. They say they can’t wait to return as dine-in guests because they feel at home here.” Fortunate enough to be dine-in guests ourselves, our culinary journey begins before our first bite. The staff at CUT by Wolfgang Puck are friendly and attentive, talking us through the uber-fresh Steak Tartar that kicks things off with a combination of Dijon mustard, grilled country bread, and crispy beef tendon. But do we dare say the Red Snapper Tartar is even better? Chef Becher has ingeniously incorporated regional flavours like pine nuts and Peninsula Farms labneh into the appetiser, and it works. Reflecting on this unusual time and its lessons, he says, “The last mistake I made – repeatedly, in fact – was thinking I could forecast when the restaurants would be allowed to reopen for dine-in service. When we shut down in mid-March, I thought for sure we would be open by Ramadan. And in Ramadan, I was certain we would be welcoming guests back by Eid al-Fitr. I learned pretty quickly that I had no ability to predict when the fact magazine

circumstances would change, so I decided to focus on making guests happy… and kept my sanity as a result.” Back at the table, CUT by Wolfgang Puck's Corn Cappelletti, which comes with beef chorizo and fresh Italian parsley, is also worthy of a mention – the sweetness of the corn and saltiness of the parmesan pair beautifully. Another instant hit with everyone on the table is the Braised Veal Cheek. Not only is the meat melt-in-your-mouth tender, but a velvety harissa sauce and bed of couscous bring the whole dish together. We’re not ones to turn down cheese (of any sort), so of course the arrival of Fresh Italian Burrata is cause for celebration. Sinfully creamy, it’s served alongside duck prosciutto and fermented plums, the balance of flavours and textures speaking of Chef Becher's talent. “When we open our doors to our guests, we have one shot to meet and exceed their high expectations. To me, anything less than excellent is a failure,” he says. And it shows. But bear in mind that CUT by Wolfgang Puck is not just about catering to carnivores. Our taste buds revel in the Black Bass, the butter-poached summer vegetables, and the warm lemon vinaigrette that's drizzled across. This is a feast we won't soon forget, but it's not over – the creations of executive pastry chef Abderazik Fourkou await. Both the Raspberry Chocolate Brownies and Strawberry Shortcake are elevated takes on old-fashioned favourites, but it's the Chocolate Mango Chow Feung Roll that takes us by surprise. An Asian-inspired dessert that borrows from the best of mango season? Genius. ✤

ontemporary Indian cuisine is a treat in itself, but contemporary Indian cuisine perfected by a world-renowned chef? Perfection. Vineet Bhatia became the first Michelinstarred chef to operate in the country back in 2015, and his creations at Rasoi by Vineet continue to captivate foodies across town. The décor accents here scream regal – read: crystal draping and oversized lighting – setting the tone for what’s to follow, but it’s the show kitchen that remains our favorite feature. We begin our decadent experience at this fine-dining establishment with Honey-Dill Salmon Tikka that, somewhere between its flavour and texture, is one of the best salmon fillets we’ve had in a while. Over in the mains, the Zucchini Paneer with spinach saag is also a palatepleaser, and an easy choice for vegetarians. Struggling to tear ourselves from the Garlic-Coriander Naan (as expected), we continue on to the inventive Chicken Bhuna with masala wheat crisps. The chicken is slow-cooked, accompanied by a thick and intense sauce, and mild but spiced to perfection. Sold. Rasoi by Vineet’s immensely popular Raj Puri is another culinary highlight. It consists of a round, crisp crepe stuffed with a mixture of potatoes, onions, chickpeas, and tamarind fact magazine

chutney, and more – and deserves a spot in your Instagram feed. Not only is it art on a plate, but it tastes as good as it looks, making it a mustorder. But we digress. There’s a Kashmiri Lamb Shank Korma on the table, waiting to cater to the diehard carnivores amongst us. If tender, falloff-the-bone meat simmered in a hearty curry sounds appealing, this one’s for you. Stuffed but adamant to carry on, we turn our attention to the Achari Chicken Biryani. It’s spicy, it’s tangy, it’s everything you’d expect when an Indian staple like biryani is paired with pickling spices and chicken slow-cooked in yoghurt. The anticipation for dessert only builds from this point, and we’re delighted to report that our meal ends on a high note. The perfect balance of sweet and salty, the Chocolate Chikki Delice at Rasoi by Vineet is served alongside salted caramel kulfi and wins our seal of approval – several times over. ✤

ntering Crossroads at Marriott Executive Apartments, we immediately notice an atmosphere that doesn’t come along often in Bahrain’s dining scene. Why? Well, there are restaurants with interior décor so elegant that you almost can’t get comfortable. Then, there are restaurants so comfortable that they don’t quite manage to create a sense of occasion. And then there’s Crossroads, where the interiors erase the distinctions between comfort and elegance. Wood elements, nook seating, plants, and plenty of warm lighting come together to create a setting that’s equal parts elegant and inviting. After getting seated by a friendly waiter, we start searching for the menu, but to no avail. Turns out it’s under our plates in the form of a one-time use placemat. Safe and atypical – we’re off to a good start. We also love the sound of what awaits us upon a glance at the menu. Strawberry & Date Salad? Yes, please. Beef Tenderloin? Always. As the dishes arrive in succession, we take a few moments to give the signature Crossroads Mezza a try. It comes complete with the usual suspects like falafel, muhamara, hummus, moussaka, nojoumia, and vine leaves – except they’re all done with a twist at Crossroads. The vine leaves are enriched with pomegranate juice, adding a touch of tang, while caramelised onions unexpectedly elevate the humble hummus. Next comes the aforementioned salad, a refreshing combination of mixed greens, fresh strawberries, and sweet date balls accented with a balsamic reduction and lemon-oil dressing. Bonus: it’s vegan. Where have you been all my life? Another must-try salad is the Crossroads Salad, but this one’s for the carnivores as a choice of lamb kofta or grilled chicken accompany baby spinach, rocket leaves, and a pomegranate dressing. Comfort food connoisseurs, meanwhile, should head straight for the Crossroads Burger. We can’t help but notice it’s encased in a crispy bun stuffed with cheese. And we can’t resist

a happy dance. Another crowd-pleaser, this time in the Mains section, is the Beef Tenderloin – a thick, juicy, rosemary-crusted steak complemented by grilled vegetables and baby potatoes that are not only roasted to perfection, but also enveloped in cheese. Win-win. Come dessert, we opt for the Orange & Polenta Flourless Cake that, admittedly, looks dull at first sight. But we’re wrong. Boy, are we wrong. It’s zesty, it’s flavourful, it’s surprisingly light. And because we’re told the Russian Honey Cake at Crossroads is the Beyoncé of honey cakes, we can’t help but make space for it, too. Because why not? If you prefer your desserts with more layers than you can count, this one’s a winner. ✤

MAKING WAVES Backstage at the Autumn Winter 2020 show, dunhill reveals an exploration of its new and established codes with an unapologetically expressive campaign entitled The New Wave. fact magazine

• FASHION FOCUS The old guard and the avant-garde are both celebrated in the latest dunhill collection, where tradition and subversion work together in a distinctly British way. The technical specificity of menswear is celebrated, with British tailoring traditions explored and experimented with, providing a new take on deconstruction. Leitmotifs from previous collections reach a culmination in this one, becoming a settled part of the fabric of dunhill. Codes of class and creativity, of the establishment and the anti-establishment, find form once more. The introduction of pegged trousers in felt and eel skin, a nod to the New Romantics, provide a more relaxed lower half to the silhouette. Standard suiting is eschewed, yet tailoring is both rigorous and sensuous. The wrapped jacket is now also strapped, a subtle play on bondage. Silk knit neckpieces, strong structured shoulders and high break jackets provide a new, sinuous elegance in the upper half. Town and country come together in hints of the equestrian. Luxurious leather outerwear, a tour de force of capes and overcoats in calf and eel, provide drama and yet are engineered and bonded for practicality. Kimono sleeves add to the exploration of volume and structure while the notion of tailoring itself is deconstructed with its secret codes exposed - the inner becoming outer. Here, Melton felt resides under collars, chest canvas and acetate linings emerge, utility is transformed into elegance. Brothel creepers and Link strap loafers provide the grounding, accessorised with the new Lock bags. For Autumn Winter 2020, dunhill introduces three new footwear styles direct from the Paris runway: the dunhill Creeper Derby, Creeper loafer and the dunhill Link loafer. Inspired by the platformsoled creepers associated with British punk culture of the 1970s, the lace-up Creeper Derby and slip-on Creeper loafer are finished in black brushed calf leather for a luxurious take on this distinctly British style. Playing with proportions, the dunhill Link loafer combines a slim leather sole with exaggerated chain link hardware, referencing chain watch straps - a cross between the preppy and the new wave.✤ GO: SHOP THE LATEST COLLECTION AT WWW.DUNHILL.COM

What We’re (Still) Talking About Gucci
Can mascara change the world? Apparently. The world of fashion and beauty may be synonymous with superficiality, but Gucci – courtesy of its Mascara L'Obscur – made waves by selecting an 18-year-old model with Down syndrome named Ellie Goldstein to star in a Gucci Beauty campaign. Entitled Unconventional Beauty, the campaign celebrates the type of beauty we don't expect to see in mainstream media. In an exclusive chat with FACT, cofounder and director Zoe Proctor of Zebedee (the modelling agency that represents Ellie) explained her mission. “We want to increase the positive representation of disabled people in fashion, beauty, advertising, and wider media. Representation matters, and it leads to a greater acceptance of disability in the wider society, which in turn creates a kinder place for us to live. When Ellie booked the campaign, we were proud of her and ourselves. We were finally getting representation in luxury brands. The campaign has changed her life and shown other brands that inclusive casting is the way forward.” Since catching the world's attention, the disabled model has revealed that she aspires to "be on the front cover of magazines" while her presence on Gucci Beauty's Instagram account continues to garner more likes than any other post. 88

Shelter
A new "Netflix for design nerds" streaming service has launched, bringing with it hundreds of hours worth of content showcasing the best in architecture, design, lifestyle, and outdoor living – think: TV shows, shortform videos, documentaries like Tadao Ando: From Emptiness to Infinity, and original programming such as Inspired Architecture. But there's more. Videos from your favourite home and design magazines are also on the roster, with downloaded videos accessible for 30 days offline. Available globally, Shelter was created by Australian actor Dustin Clare, who explained the correlation between the pandemic and the streaming service. “The reality of lockdown has made us re-examine our connection to home, our immediate environment, and the world around us. Through Shelter, we invite viewers to explore, be inspired, be entertained and engrossed and, most of all, be engaged with the world of architecture, design, lifestyle, and outdoor living,” he said in a statement. Shelter is currently live on App Store and Google Play for streaming across computers, phones, and tablets. Bonus: a tree will be planted by non-profit organisation Eden Reforestation Projects to represent every single subscriber. Win-win.
TikTok
Even if you have yet to clean your bathtub with grapefruit or use a plastic water bottle to separate egg whites from yolks, the saga that is the sale of TikTok is worth keeping up with. At one point, Microsoft was in talks to buy the US operations of the controversial social media app. As was Twitter. As was Oracle. For the uninitiated, US President Donald Trump recently said he would ban TikTok if parent company ByteDance did not sell its US operations, citing concerns over national security – merely weeks after India banned it. American teenagers, meanwhile, can't fathom a world without the Chineseowned app. The latest statistics indicate that TikTok boasts roughly 85 million monthly active users in the US, 60 per cent of whom are between the ages of 16-24. On the losing end of this argument, they’ve spent the last few weeks reacting to the potential ban with what they do best: posting memes, memes, and more memes. One even flaunted her scanty bank balance to prove she has no personal data worth stealing. Through it all, TikTok stands by its initial statement, insisting that it does not share the data of its American users with the Chinese government. Watch this space.

In light of this edition’s theme, how have you adapted to the new normal? The coping strategy that has been pushed forward most frequently by the media is to be productive during quarantine. However, I don't think this is realistic because the millennial generation has not experienced such challenges and conditions before. That is why, since life has slowed down on many different levels, I considered this period a reset button for all facets of my life. For example, on a business level, we started brainstorming new

ideas, reevaluating our strategies, and setting a revised plan for the future. We have to change our view of this difficult phase in life, especially so we can make the most of it for ourselves. Which local hotspot did you miss most in quarantine, and why? I miss being able to go to my favorite cafés when I face a creativity block. Sitting there and observing the people working around me used to reignite the fire of learning and creativity in myself.
Based on how 2020 turned out to be, what is one thing you hope to accomplish before the end of this year? The plan for 2020 is survival. Having two branches in Bahrain and Kuwait requires balancing the finances during this challenging period. Not to mention, being unable to fly to Kuwait also requires working virtually with the team. I can certainly say that virtual collaboration and process digitisation – despite distance and financial hardships – is one of my major achievements so far.
