Welcome, Let's Have Some Tea...

If we are to preserve culture we must continue to create it. - Johan Huizinga

L

ike many of you who have come to call Bahrain home, I feel a special connection with this country unlike anywhere else in the world. It’s not just that it has the perfect location for long weekend jaunts to Africa or Asia, or that you can literally order every item under the sun straight to your doorstep (although, that does really help), and it’s not even the year-round sunshine - what Bahrain has to offer is an amalgamation of traditions and modernity. In many ways, it is a country of balance; on one hand, plenty is done to preserve and celebrate local culture, history and heritage, and on the other hand, there is a constant spike of innovative thinking and concepts that highlight the centuries-old openness of welcoming people from all walks of life to live on this very unique island. Plus, some of the best humans I know just happen to reside here. And ok, yes, the sunshine does help! For our annual big September issue, we take a look at how one Bahraini photographer is bringing his love for the country into 2019. Holding onto Bahrain’s nostalgic past whilst celebrating its growth and transformation, Mustafa AbdulHadi has created award-winning photos of the place he so lovingly calls home. In fact, one of his most simple yet powerful shots graces our front cover this month - I mean, how many times have your local friends and even strangers wanting to share their culture, invited you round for tea and food in Bahrain? For me, it's countless. And it's given me some of the best memories I have of this place. Turn to p35 and read all about his culturally relevant work, which sees the people, the places and the very fabric of Bahrain's diverse society captured on camera. He posts his work on the instagram page: @mustafaa7 so give him a follow for a constant stream of visual inspiration. We dive further into the culture scene here in Bahrain, starting on p23, we explore the many well-known - and some hidden - landmarks that are well worth visiting whether you're new to the country or simply looking for a refresher. There are some on the list that I'm yet to visit too - why not grab a group of friends and get exploring this month? If that's not enough, we've got the official nominee list for the 10th - that's right, a whole decade - annual FACT Dining Awards Bahrain 2019 (p48). With the country's foodie stars vying to walk away with an award, there's lots of favourites as well as newbies and some first-timers who made the cut. Visit www.fact-magazine.com to cast your vote today. The ceremony will be held in a very special location in late November, where we'll recognise and celebrate all the nominees and the winners. This summer has been filled with lots of fresh air and family time, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that there is literally nowhere in the world like Bahrain. It took me all of two weeks to start missing the constant rays of sunshine, beach days and my favourite juice stalls in Manama Souq! Now, the real question is, how can I deal with this humidity? Tips and tricks are welcomed... ☺

Storytelling comes in many forms but photography can be one of the most compelling. Seeing Bahrain through a local’s eyes is one of the joys about getting acquainted with a culture so rich in history and tradition. FACT’s Shabana Adam caught up with photography maestro Mustafa AbulHadi to learn more about why illustrating the tales of island life and a civilisation with such deep roots is at the forefront of his passion and talent… fact magazine

ahrain; a place where capturing the humanity in every moment is made possible through its incredibly warm and inviting communities, its raw cultural roots, abundant heritage sites and, of course, the buzz of lively neighbourhoods where people from all walks of life are welcomed with smiles and friendly intrigue. Mustafa AbdulHadi understands what we mean. Having photographed some of the most hidden corners and every day going-ons here, if there’s one place to start your culture course on what to expect from our unique island nation, it’s with Mustafa’s photographs. “Bahrain is full of beautiful places, both modern and old, and it has a very distinct culture,” he says. “From ancient occupations and events to customs and traditions that continue to this day. This is what makes it a special place to live.” Some of his iconic images include an overhead shot of Ramadan gatherings at Iftar time, a farmer harvesting dates, casually atop a palm tree, a majestic sunset at Qalat’al Bahrain and many captures of local people doing normal, every day things like enjoying tea in Manama Souq or fishermen coming ashore with their catch of the day, and even a young child praying at the mosque. All of these are representative of the cultural mix that has formed over hundreds of years as a result of diverse rulers, foreign visitors and expatriates who have settled in the country and made it their home for decades now. Mustafa was in primary school when he first laid hands on a camera. Since childhood, he has enjoyed documenting more intimate moments and occasions of his family. It wasn’t until 2012 that he took the leap and bought a DSLR camera and proceeded to teach himself the ins and outs of photography through YouTube tutorial videos. “I was in college and was anxious to buy a camera,” Mustafa recalls. “My friend had a Canon camera and he advised me to buy the Canon 60D, and here forth the obsession started. I was shooting every day and in every place, trying all kinds of photography until I found my own style and passion which is photographing cultures from different perspectives that tell the stories of its people,” he adds. A photograph is to Mustafa what a novel is to a writer. What he doesn’t express in words, he conveys through an image. In fact, his love of discovering different cultures started from a young age, and being equipped with a camera has allowed him to tell the stories of, and highlight, particular cultures through an image. Aside from Bahrain, Mustafa has photographed poignant places around the world including India, China, Sri Lanka, Oman and more recently Italy, to name but a few of the destinations highlighted on his instagram page: @ mustafaa7. fact magazine

• LOCAL ARTS

In Bahrain, Mustafa likes to “portray people, their daily lives, their work, events, and traditional market scenes in Manama Souq, Muharraq, and village life where you see authentic Bahrain,” he says. He keeps the process of subject-to-‘gram simple, using his camera, Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to take and edit the images. Mustafa is an advocate of showcasing his talent and these cultural stories through his online platforms. “There is a saying in the marketing world: ‘meet your audience where they are’,” he tells us. “Social media is essential to sharing your work and yourself and it is accessible to all ages and groups in society. It's the photographer's job to demonstrate this in today's marketing environment through multiple uses and creative strategies,” Mustafa continues. “The goal is not to get a huge number of likes, shares, and comments, so do not stress if this happens to you. The point is to get your audience talking, taking action, and encouraging others to do the same.” Of course, photography is as much a skill as it is a passion. Mustafa’s advice to other budding culture snappers is to practice, and then practice some more. “Practice makes perfect,” he says. “Enjoy being curios and 38

you will gain a lot of experience. Learn more about the different settings of the camera and techniques of photography to get achieve the results you want. “One of the best and most efficient ways to learn is on YouTube, it’s where I learned a lot of from the basics of photography to advanced lessons and, more importantly, self assessment, looking at the results of your own learning and accepting constructive criticism from others,” Mustafa explains. “Do not stop at a certain extent AS the world of photography is wide and wonderful. Try hard, take chances and do not be afraid to call out your own strengths and weaknesses and areas for development to continue your progress. And most importantly, keep smiling to everyone,” he adds. In a place like Bahrain where the heartbeat and soul of a country are well and truly its people, finding landscapes or communities, celebrations and gatherings to photograph is a gift for any photographer. Mustafa carries an innate need to wander, observe and capture, with the camera as his passport to storytelling. For us, as viewers, this is a chance to imagine and give life to every person, place and cultural happening that we see. How powerful and special is that? ✤ ✤

“In photography there is a reality so subtle that it becomes more real than reality.” — Alfred Stieglitz “Photography for me is not looking, it’s feeling. If you can’t feel what you’re looking at, then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures.” — Don McCullin “It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another thing to make a portrait of who they are.” — Paul Caponigro “To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” — Elliott Erwitt “If the photographer is interested in the people in front of his lens, and if he is compassionate, it’s already a lot. The instrument is not the camera but the photographer.” — Eve Arnold “There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.” — Ansel Adams “I love the people I photograph. I mean, they’re my friends. I’ve never met most of them or I don’t know them at all, yet through my images I live with them.” — Bruce Gilden “I like to photograph anyone before they know what their best angles are.” — Ellen Von Unwerth “Great photography is about depth of feeling, not depth of field.” — Peter Adams “Which of my photographs is my favorite? What follows is Elizabeth, a journalist, covering the story for a magazine and interviewing one of the ringleaders as she tries to figure out what went wrong.

DIRECTOR: Lorene Scafaria CAST: Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, Lili Reinhart

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Bringing together Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart, Keke Palmer and Cardi B, Hustlers has got to be one of the biggest releases of the year. Based on New York magazine’s 2015 article The Hustlers at Scores by Jessica Pressler, the film is girl power at its finest as a group of strippers turn the tables on their customers. A real-life revenge tale, the plot follows a determined single mother and an ageing dancer, that lead a crew of savvy former strip club employees who come together to get back at their Wall Street clients. As Lopez teaches Wu’s newbie character her moves on the pole, the women decide to take advantage of a few of their clients and ultimately take it too far. Unlike earlier stripper-centric movies, Hustlers is adapted and directed by a woman, Lorene Scafaria. Offering an empathetic narrative on men and women as well as our gender roles, the film will give you something to think about, while having you perched on the edge of your seat.

Lover

By Frank Turner

By Taylor Swift

Calling all Swifties! Two years after the release of her chart-topping album, Reputation, Taylor Swift is making a comeback. And though she claims that the real Taylor can’t come to the phone right now, her seventh studio album and first release under Republic Records, focuses on just as much romance as its predecessors. However, Lover is much more upbeat and technicolour than her last release. Featuring Brendon Urie, “Me” is the epitome of a Taylor Swift lead single. A song about embracing your individuality and really owning it, the song will make you feel better about yourself, with its infectious pop hook being the momentary escape we all need. Showcasing an exuberant pop sound, the Lover era ushers in self-reflection as well as raw emotions. Continuing to spread self-love and positivity, “You Need to Calm Down” takes on the internet trolls and haters. Using a refreshing and promising sound, Swift reflects on everything that is wrong with social media, while supporting a breathtaking argument. The catchy pop package delivers an important message while blessing our creative senses. One of pop the scene’s most enduring stars, Taylor Swift combines lyrics, videos and even red carpet outfits to share her life with her fans. Brimming with Swiftian Easter egg hunts and some self-reflective masterpieces, Lover is bound straight for sale success.

No Man’s Land

A beautifully melodious ode to women in history, Frank Turner’s No Man’s Land is a true work of art. Incorporating a traditional folk approach, Turner shares stories that are not being told right now but need to be heard. The eighth studio album by the English singer-songwriter tells the tales of important, inspirational women throughout history who don’t receive the recognition they deserve. One of the most influential musicians in American history, “Sister Rosetta” talks about the unparalleled Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Using some guitar parts from her own back catalog, the heartfelt single is unlike anything we have ever heard before. Encapsulating her work and spirit in a stunningly respectful manner, Turner is treading uncharted territory. Combining his love for history and songwriting, Frank Turner is colliding two worlds that have always been separate from each other. Bringing to life history’s forgotten women, No Man’s Land shifts away popular culture and gives his music a whole new edge. We’re in awe.

The Greenwich Village church they belong to connects two very different couples, Charles and Lily, and Nan and James. Set against the backdrop of a changing New York City, the story follows these two couples through decades of love and friendship, jealousy and understanding, forgiveness and commitment. Surrounded by turbulent times, the couples forge unimaginable paths through their evolving relationships, each struggling with uncertainty, heartbreak, and happiness. A total page-turner!

W

alking through the very doors that the likes of Winston Churchill, the Queen of England and many other prominent world figures have stepped through really feels like a journey of discovery. This is the iconic Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London; a building that speaks to the very fabric of the English capital’s architecture, history and deep heritage. It is where traditionally-dressed bellman in red coats and top hats greet you with warm smiles and sincere wishes for the day - reminding guests of the oldworld, classic English charm that so many visitors are looking for in London. In fact, pleasantries are plenty and welcoming as the staff at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London all carry this same graceful approach to dealing with guests. In a bustling city during peak summer season, this is a first impression that we applaud. Housed in a 117-year-old landmark building, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London reopened its doors in April 2019 after a restoration of its guest rooms and suites, including two newly created expansive penthouse suites. Conveying signature Mandarin touches, the London property boasts distinctive design and a strong sense of place, with both local elements and oriental flair meeting to create intuitive service that is as reflective of its British roots as it is synonymous with the brand’s Far East charisma.

Walk into the lobby and admire the understated elegance of a reception area that feels so much like walking into an old friend’s home. At check-in, we’re a little early and are shown to the very sophisticated Mandarin Bar for complimentary mocktails - a nice gesture by the MO team to start off our stay. SUITE TEMPTATIONS Instantly, you will recognise that the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London is not doing things by halves – all 181 guest rooms and suites are now more luxurious and comfortable than ever before, with art deco-inspired features including carefully curated artworks and custom-designed furniture. There are too many nooks and details for us to capture for the ‘gram and we’re completely in zen mode when lounging in our Knightsbridge Suite. It’s no wonder that the space feels so inviting and effortless as the interior is a result of internationally renowned designer, Joyce Wang’s meticulous skills. She has overseen the redesign of all guest rooms and suites, along with the creation of the hotel’s new Penthouses, taking inspiration from the peaceful parkside location, as well as the glamour of the early 20th century’s Golden Age of travel. The suite is the size of a luxury apartment, designed with an airy, creative approach where space has been used practically and stylishly. Thoughtful touches with iconic

decor like innovative lighting, are used to remind guests of the unique themes. These beautiful suites feature a generous living room with a velvet sofa, a reading chair and a mirrored coffee table. The striking glass chandelier, gilded mirror artwork and hand tufted carpets and rugs reflect the beauty of nearby leafy Hyde Park. With a design inspired by the 20th century’s Golden Age of travel, these spacious suites provide a high level of luxury. Each lavish suite has a curated library of books by Mayfair publishers, Heywood Hill for guests to enjoy (we found a few by one of our favourite travel writers, Bill Bryson). Featuring views of buzzing Knightsbridge, this suite offers a sense of comfort and understated luxury. The en-suite bathroom is one of those that you would dream of having in your own home; elegantly fashioned from Volakas marble with a frieze made from Palisandro Bleu marble and twin vanity units as well as a huge rainforest shower. More than ideal for a group of friends, a couple or even a young family, who need their own space and mirror for makeup or grooming. Space is no issue here. A separate walk-in wardrobe is situated next to the living room whilst cupboard and closet space is abundant in the bedroom and living room too. However, it was in the details that we found the true essence of the Mandarin Oriental brand’s excelled service shine through. Plug sockets are neatly tucked away near both sides of the bed so there’s no arguing over who gets to charge their devices; in every suite, guests will find a host of special additions ranging from yoga mats for private practice, GHD hair straighteners, Nespresso coffee makers, his and her Miller Harris bathroom amenities and Jo Hansford hair products. We even receive complimentary amenities in the form of chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle of bubbly during the stay - it’s all about the small added touches. WORLD-CLASS DINING If food is your forte, the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London has it all to make your stay the most exciting for every palate. All eyes are on the eclectic dining destinations which include the only London venue by Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud, Bar Boulud, the inspirational gastronomy of Heston Blumenthal at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, and quintessentially British, fact magazine

The Roseberry for all-day dining and afternoon tea, alongside the magnificent Mandarin Bar. As far as food goes, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London is bringing its A-game to the city’s luxury culinary scene. Start your day with a sumptuous breakfast where an extensive (and very delicious) menu includes everything from eggs benedict to fresh juices, fluffy French toast, pastries galore and even weekly changing specials plus Chinese and Japanese breakfast menus including cantonese dim sum and miso soup amongst other delicacies. Healthy options are aplenty with granola parfait, porridge and oats, egg whites and more to choose from. We’d highly recommend going down for breakfast between 9.30am-10.30am and either sitting on the gorgeous patio outside or indoors by the window. Why? Because these are the best spots from where to view the liveried royal guards trotting by in formation with Hyde Park as a background - a truly British experience. For dinner, we head to the acclaimed Bar Boulud and are very impressed with the mid-week crowd. The atmosphere is abuzz with diners when we visit – somebody celebrating a birthday, colleagues grabbing drinks after work, couples enjoying an intimate meal and families letting their taste buds explore new dishes for the evening. Our waiter for the evening, Jon Luca, is one of the reasons why the whole dining experience was an exceptional one. Friendly, accommodating of our dietary requirements and very knowledgeable on the menu, his forthcoming nature was appreciated. Bar Boulud is a stylish bistro and wine bar specialising in seasonal, rustic French cooking. Its relaxed ambience and fabulous cuisine has won plaudits from critics and diners alike. Incorporating two large connecting rooms, the restaurant features stunning design points such as an impressive zinc topped bar and a sleek open kitchen. Classic materials such as wood, leather and cork add a contemporary touch. As well as the main restaurant, guests have the option of dining at the charcuterie counter where they can watch the chefs at work. It’s simple dishes like the burrata cheese, cherry tomatoes and rocket pesto that remind us why freshness and flavour don’t have to be over-indulgent ingredients but rather quality is what matters. This is indeed a creamy burrata that we devour in minutes - Jon Luca’s recommendation of course (and a little of his Italian roots). The mezze is a great mix of baba ganoush, hummus, tzatziki lavash and socca chips - the perfect sharing dish to get conversation going. The Lobster Roll: Cornish lobster, confit lemon tarragon mayonnaise and brioche bun is a little bit of a revelation and a dish that seafood lovers should absolutely order. Next, the grilled sea bass, harrisa marinated peach Freekeh rice, spring onion is a dish that will please even the most discerning palate with its different textures and tastes. The restaurant is famed for its meat offerings with the pan-seared 12oz ribeye, 6oz hanger steak and range of juicy burgers taking centre stage. fact magazine

We love that the menu is a good manageable size with enough options to please all dietary requirements without straying too far from the original dish. For those who would love to savour a glass of their finest liquid concoctions, ask for the head sommelier for his recommendations or let the talented barman whip up something flavourful. Service is at the level of what’s to be expected at a venue that belongs to a Michelin-Starred chef – everyone is clued up on the food and eager to make recommendations. Professional yet personable - Bar Boulud epitomises everything we love about London, and everything we love about good food. TIME TO RELAX New York designer Adam D. Tihany, has overseen the redesign of the next-generation Spa. In keeping with the fresh new look, the extensive spa menu has also been enhanced to include exclusive partnerships with some of the most sought-after health and wellness experts in the world. The new spa features 13 individual treatments rooms, an Oriental Suite with two massage beds and a Rasul water temple, a room designed for traditional ASANTE Chinese Medicine consultations and treatments and a Bastien Gonzalez Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio – the first of its kind in the UK. Their is also a well-equipped gym and a lovely indoor pool to while away the hours. If walls could talk, this established hotel would have many stories to tell. The building was commissioned in the late 1880s however construction was initially delayed due to fears that its height would cast a shadow over the Serpentine. It finally opened in 1889 as an exclusive block of apartments for affluent bachelors, before opening as a hotel, with its own private Royal Entrance, in 1902. Since then, many honoured guests have passed through the hotel, and for several years after the Second World War it was the headquarters of the SAS. Glamorous parties and dance classes by the venerable Madame Vacani – who taught HRH Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret to dance – have been held in the ballroom. Sir Winston Churchill lived in the hotel for a while and was known to offer room service waiters two cigars in return for the delivery of an early breakfast. Many of these momentous past events can be viewed in more detail in the newly created Historical Journey Exhibition on permanent display in the hotel. There is nothing we love more than hospitality that so flawlessly exceeds our expectations. The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London did just that and then some - luxury living at its peak. ✤

THE ALL-NEW MERCEDES-BENZ A-CLASS SEDAN MERCEDES-BENZ HAS MANAGED TO REVOLUTIONISE THE COMPACT CAR SEGMENT WITH THE ALL-NEW A-CLASS.

T

he origins of Mercedes-Benz can be traced all the way back to the very first petrol-powered car in 1886. Since then, it has become one of the most recognised brands on the planet due to its constant production of quality vehicles as well as its forward-thinking approach toward automobile development. Now, for the very first time, the all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan has arrived in the Kingdom of Bahrain and guess who was lucky enough to test drive this premium piece of machinery? That’s right, us! Having waited for some time to finally catch a glimpse of this brand-new offering from Mercedes, we were pleasantly surprised when her shapely form first came into view. Proportionately, the A-Class Sedan is a dynamic and compact saloon car with a short front and rear overhangs. The design of this model’s front end is very progressive in nature with its low, elongated bonnet. This combined with the slimline headlights as well as the single-louvre diamond radiator grille with optional chrome pins and central star, ensure the vehicle delivers a powerful first impression. The shoulders of this sedan have both a muscular and chic nature to them, with the precise character lines running below them emphasising the per-fect contours of its sides. 19-inch twin-spoke light-alloy wheels along with the prominent wheel arches ensure the A-Class displays a distinctive sporty attitude when on the roads. At the rear, two-part tail lamps emphasise the car’s width whilst the rear reflectors have been relocated to the modular two-part rear bumper. Our model boasted the chrome trim strip bumper option, as well as the chrome tailpipe tips which added to the stylish look of the car. All-in-all, the masterminds at Mercedes have managed to put together an impressive looking exterior for this sedan, one that anyone would be proud to show off. Once inside the A-Class, it was obvious that the same care and attention given to the outside of the vehicle was matched within. The modern design of the interior showcases Mercedes’s new approach to the compact class, one that provides a distinct feeling of spaciousness and comfort. The unique architecture of the interior is shaped particularly by the avant-garde design of the dashboard. There is no cowl above the cockpit which results in the wing-shaped main body of the dashboard flowing from front door to front door with no visual disruption. The leather multifunctional sports steering wheel felt just right in the hands, whilst the immaculately designed seats ensured our driving experience was to be a comfortable one. The rear seating in the car also proved to be both comfy and spacious. The gorgeous layout of the interior is complemented by ambient lighting (optional) of which, we were told, there are 64 colours to choose from. The completely new Mercedes-Benz User Experience multimedia system (MBUX) is featured in the new A-Class. This system can be accessed through the high-resolution Widescreen Cockpit complete with touchscreen operation of 66

fact magazine

the media display. A navigation display with intelligent voice control with natural speech recognition are other great features of this contemporary system. This model also offers smartphone integration as well as an available head-up display. Once out on the tarmac, we were able to fully appreciate what this car has to offer. With a displacement of 1332 cc and a rated output of 120 kW, we were able to accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h in a respectable 8.1 seconds. Boasting a top speed of 230 km/h, the new A-Class has more than enough power on offer, complemented by its fantastic grip, breaking ability and general feel of complete control it provides. The handling of this vehicle, even around tight bends, was exceptional which allowed for us to relax and enjoy the driving experience. Safety features contributing to the competent feel of the A-Class include a Direct-Steer system, Active Brake Assist, Cruise Control, a tyre pressure monitoring system, Active Parking Assist, a reversing camera, pedestrian protection and more. By the time we arrived back at Al Haddad Motors we were more than convinced that Mercedes-Benz has managed to revolutionise the compact saloon experience by setting a benchmark that other manufacturers will struggle to match. ✤

WOMEN Laid-back luxury is key for the introduction of this collection. The season sees the arrival of Ted’s everyday staples, each piece modernised to perfectly complete the look. Lightweight, soft georgettes and cottons are paired with second-skin denim and dainty daisy embroidery to deliver a versatile, summer wardrobe. Ditsy florals are elevated against navy backdrops and bold leaves create a graphic take on Ted’s renowned floral print. Contemporary twists on feminine styles give the collection a refreshed and refined look. Metallic fabrics sit alongside summer cottons and neon piping and drawstring details add a sporty feel to floral dresses, while D-ring hardware on jumpsuits introduce a more utilitarian edge. e abandoned our car at the front of the luxury hotel and emerged ourselves into the lobby through a revolving door. Straight through the security check-up and out to the pool side. We could have drove further and parked a few steps away from the restaurant and entrance, but we did not regret the few minutes walk at the heart of such a beautiful landscape! The view of the flamingo’s en route was simply captivating. Cantina Kahlo hosts a selection of tables on the terrace overlooking a peaceful lake, but, we preferred to be seated indoors - especially at this time of the year! We opened the door and beside the gorgeous floral arrangement in the centre of the entree, the delicious smells were so appealing that my hunger pang well and truly engulfed me. We were escorted to our table beside the Mariachi Band and by the window. Our waitress was the loveliest lady, initially she explained the different corners of the buffet and helped us with the menu from which we were able to pick whatever items took our desire - a la carte style. The restaurant is not vast, but, it is the perfect size for a cosy gathering, it felt like someone’s own lake house. The green colour is dominant with an array of paintings decorating the walls mainly inspired by the Mexican Painter Frida Kahlo. 82

fact magazine

The three corners of pure deliciousness are attractively arranged. Of course the soup and salad station had a big bowl of guacamole that screams ‘Eat me!’ and I must say, I visited this corner so many times! The taco station was rich with two kinds of rice, three choices for the filling, beef, vegetarian, and chicken tacos. You choose one and the chef will happily heat up the soft taco bread, add some cheese if you like, top it with the filling of your choice, then help you figure out the best sauce: coriander, tomato, pineapple, maybe add a bit of onions or fresh cilantro or some red cabbage?! We ordered our drinks and started a discovery journey of Mexican flavours. First up, was the Sopecitos Rancheros - which is my long time favourite dish here at Cantina - braised wagyu short rib beef served in crispy corn masa boats with roasted tomato-serrano sauce, avocado and cheese is something to write home to your parents about. We admonish you to try the ceviche as it certainly bypassed our expectations. Not to forget that their range of mocktails were unreal. We highly recommend the mixed berry margarita mocktail in all of its delicious glory! And as for our main courses, we decided to try the Angus Ribeye from a variety of ‘Tierra’ Mexican Grills as well as their melt-inyour-mouth Sea Bass that showcased its perfection of buttery flesh. This brunch is truly a great choice for foodies and meat lovers alike, tender, juicy, and the taste throughout their dishes

was, as always, nothing short of amazing. I was also intrigued to order the grilled Portobello mushroom with cactus. This was a simple straightforward dish, two Portobello mushrooms grilled and topped with grilled pieces of cactus and finished with a sprinkle of cheese but the taste was anything but simple. The cactus is a lot like artichokes, a very good choice for vegetarian guests and a perfect combo with the steak. The sweet corner had a variety of desserts, but, to be honest, my eyes were fixated on the most delicious of carbs as I noticed the chef frying churros on the spot. Oh, with chocolate or cajeta (caramel) sauce, it is ultimate happiness manifested on a plate. aharat at Le MĂŠridien City Centre Bahrain is the restaurant to target for a warm and delicious Friday brunch with your family or close friends. Comforting flavours meet every taste at the company of Latino melodies. A friendly atmosphere dominates the scene at the rather traditionally modern space with wooden tables and armed chairs in dark tones highlighting the lightened ceiling and the marble floor in light brown, while the light chiffon curtains add a touch of tenderness like a happy dream. The buffet is compact yet generous in quality and this is a plus point; I highly appreciate the concise choices and lack of wastage. However, every dish is refreshed adequately - and also tastes great. Most of the cold mezza appetisers and salads are served in individual portions unlike most buffets around the island. Choices from Hummus and Tabbouleh to Beetroot concoctions and Mjadra are all perfectly prepared. You can assemble your own salad if you wish as well with an array of vinaigrettes to choose from. Cold cuts are on the menu too and we revel in them. Soups and grilled meat and chicken are evident and let me tell you, that grilled kofta is the tastiest I have ever had at brunch. Roasts like lamb and duck or salmon are some of the creations you may feast upon in addition to a variety of delicious main course meals. Good or Bad Exercise? Pearl Wasif is an Advanced Physiotherapist Practitioner, She aims to provide evidencebased management to relieve pain and restore function and movement.

When we talk about exercise, there is never a simple yes or no answer. There are many commercial posts advertising the best and the worst exercises but that does not apply to every person. So, is there such a thing as BAD exercise? Let me clarify that exercise itself has many benefits such as improving your health and reducing the risk of developing several diseases like type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. It is the application of these exercises to a specific person or situation that could be BAD. The only reason for an exercise to be classified as BAD would be if the exercise selected has not been clinically reasoned with the client. Every person is different and just because a particular exercise worked for someone, it will not necessarily work for everyone. Safe and effective exercise prescription requires careful consideration for the target individual's health status, baseline fitness, goals and preferences. There are evidence-based guidelines for how to screen, assess and when appropriate, prescribe exercise for the benefit of the clients. So basically, it comes down to the relevance of the exercise to the person and their current state not the exercise itself. My quick advice: be careful of the exercise regime you follow, make sure it has been prescribed by a healthcare professional who looks at the bigger picture. ✤

Home Is Where The Shwarma Is Aanchal Duggal is an avid bibliophile and fashion enthusiast trying to make a living out of doing what she loves. Aanchal is new to Bahrain & exploring!

Up until a month ago, I truly believed “Culture Shock” was just a buzzword coined to support the feelings of homesickness and may not have any real implications. Having just moved to a new country, all alone, I can vouch for the fact that it is definitely real and deserves more attention. Culture Shock alludes to the feelings of uncertainty, anxiety, irritability as well as sadness among others, which are induced when one is exposed to a different culture than their own. Be it a short business trip, vacation or a full-fledged move to a new country, this phenomenon can affect anyone and everyone. While moving from Bahrain to the U.S. is certainly a big change, its impact wasn’t as great as you might think. Bahrain’s diversity and multiculturalism had already prepared me for my big move. The island’s acceptance of various cultures and the harmonious cohabitation of various nationalities really made my transition and integration into a whole new society much more smoother and faster. Being away from loved ones is definitely difficult, but not being able to indulge in my biweekly dose of shawarma has been equally hard! The U.S. may have a lot of landmarks and experiences to offer, but Bahraini culture is incredibly unique and will always be a part of me wherever I go. If you’re going through the initial stages of culture shock as well, just remember it does get better and it’s definitely worth it in the end. Hang in there - you will never regret stepping out of your comfort zone, meeting new people and going on brand new adventures! ✤

Tell us more about your day-to-day role and what keeps it challenging and exciting... Crowne Plaza’s Food & Beverage Department consists of six high quality Restaurants and Bars as well having large Conference and Banqueting facilities. The hospitality industry is an industry where we still rely heavily on the human factor to deliver amazing experiences paired with a consistently great product to our guests, my biggest challenge but also the source of my greatest excitement is the achievement of that illusive consistency.

What are some of your favourite cultural hotspots in Bahrain and why? I have not had the opportunity to visit any cultural hotspots since my arrival, but I have heard of the tree of life and its spiritual significance to the local community, so this will definitely be one of my number one priorities as soon as I have settled into my new role.

Share with us some of your professional goals for the rest of the year... My aim is to use the next year to really get to know the Bahrain market, and to gain an understanding of how I can add value to the residents here. Crowne Plaza has enjoyed great support from the Bahrain community over the years and my aim will be to introduce dynamic events that add real time value to our guests while still emphasising the quality of our Food and Beverage offering.
