Put on your dancing shoes and enjoy a spectacular ethnic experience as the ILA prepares to host its highly anticipated cultural event on September 20 at the Crowne Plaza Bahrain, from 7pm to 12am.
Marking the beginning of the festive season in India, Dandiya Night has been the largest Indian dance festival in the Kingdom for more than 27 years. Expected to attract over 2,000 attendees from various nationalities, including the Indian and Bahraini communities, this year’s celebrations will be graced by the Indian Ambassador to Bahrain as the chief guest.
One of the highlights will be a live performance by DJ Rahul from Dubai, a well-known name in the Bollywood music scene, who will keep the energy high with his unique blend of traditional Indian sounds and contemporary beats. The venue itself will be transformed into a vibrant space with LED lighting, surround sound and five large digital screens, creating an immersive atmosphere.

FUN FOR FURRY FRIENDS
Join the Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) for an exciting charity quiz night filled with trivia, games and raffles, to raise funds for the Kingdom's oldest animal welfare organisation.
Animal lovers have a fantastic opportunity to support a worthy cause while enjoying a fun night out. Get ready for an evening of entertainment at the BSPCA Charity Quiz Night, where every entry helps provide essential care and shelter for animals in need across the island. The event will be hosted by Radio Bahrain DJ Shannon Crockett on September 17 at The Exchange Pub in Ramada by Wyndham Bahrain, Adliya, starting at 7.30pm.
The BSPCA is currently facing significant challenges, including a shortage of volunteers and donations. Its Thrift Shop in Budaiya, which is the primary source of funding for the Animal Welfare Centre (AWC) and the Catch, Neuter, Release (CNR) programme, has seen a drop in the number of volunteers and donated items, leading to a financial strain. With more than 150 animals in its care, including dogs, cats, rabbits and even farm animals, the BSPCA urgently needs public support. It welcomes volunteers and donations of any kind, including equipment such as AC units and computers,
petrol for its vans and services like painting and general maintenance. The Thrift Shop accepts clothing, handbags, jewellery, home décor, art pieces, books, games and toys.
In addition to the quiz night, the BSPCA is also seeking donations for its upcoming annual dinner in November. Companies and individuals are invited to contribute prizes for the raffle and auction. The organisation also has a sizeable area of land available for rent next to its shelter.
To learn more or get involved, visit www.bspca.org or call 1759 1231.
Entry to the quiz is BD5 per person and all proceeds will go directly towards the shelter and the CNR programme for cats and dogs. ✤

AN OASIS ON WHEELS
FACT spent a full day in the all-new SANTA FE MX5, a sizeable and comfy family SUV jam-packed with thoughtful features.
This month we were invited by the team at First Motors to test drive the all-new 2024 SANTA FE MX5. Having already heard good things about this adventurous, large family SUV featuring Hyundai’s innovative design approach and advanced technology, we couldn’t have been happier to accept.
Refined & Robust Exterior
As we began our exterior inspection of the car, our first impression was that Hyundai had successfully blended aesthetics with everyday functionality. We were also impressed at how this ultra-modern-looking machine manages to appear bold and elegant at the same time.
This car has an almost retro-like boxy design with sharp edges and a flat, upright front end that adds to its sturdy demeanour. From front on, this classy-looking SUV exhibits a clear and sculpted appearance accentuated by a horizontal LED light bar with H-shaped front signature lights on either side. A dark chrome front grille and the now iconic H badge in black add further touches of class to an already stylish face.
Shifting our attention to the flanks, we took in the bridge-type roof rack that enables transporting of extra or extra-large goods. A hidden assist handle has been incorporated into the design to provide easier access to the roof. We felt the longer wheelbase of this jumbo SUV is enhanced by the stylish 21-inch alloy wheels. At the back end, Hyundai’s latest release also features H-shaped lights and one of the largest tailgates in the brand’s lineup, specifically designed to make life all the easier for owners.
Stylish & Spacious Interior
Slipping into the front, we noted the convenience of the power-adjustable driver and passenger memory seats and the commanding position from which to view the road ahead. These seats are ventilated, meaning a far better experience during the hot summer months.
We appreciated the unique touch on the steering wheel where four dots, representing the letter ‘H’ in Morse code, replace the traditional Hyundai logo.
Before setting off, we took our time taking in the well-balanced interior of our Calligraphy trim level model that exuded a calming and relaxing ambience, along with an exceptional level of comfort throughout.
The interior harmonised perfectly with the exterior, featuring signature H-Light-shaped elements across the dashboard and air vents.
The thoughtfully designed cabin came outfitted with softtouch plastics, premium Nappa leather and a range of convenient gadgets.
Further, the increased cabin size of this seven-seater family SUV means plenty of seating options, all of which offer sufficient room for heads, shoulders, knees and feet.
The included dual-tint sunroof meant an abundance of natural light in the cabin that added to the uplifting and spacious feel. Throughout the day, we discovered a variety of storage spaces whose locations were meticulously selected to provide extra convenience while on the move.
One of our favourite discoveries was the spacious, terracelike space provided by the wide tailgate. When open, this area would be perfect for enjoying outdoor activities or simply sitting and taking in the views. Fully foldable second and third-row seats allow for maximum utilisation of this space.
Modern Tech & Infotainment
Hyundai has equipped its latest release with a wide range of convenience features. A novel inclusion are the dual wireless phone charging trays in the massive centre console. This is also a bilateral multi-console, so it can be opened on either side, allowing for easy access for both front and second-row occupants. For us, the most innovative tech feature of the MX5 had to be the first-of-its-kind UV-C sterilisation tray. This all-new inclusion quickly and easily sterilises frequently used items such as keys, mobile phones, wallets and other objects.
To provide further convenience and focus, Hyundai has included a Digital Centre Mirror (DCM) that acts as an additional rearview mirror, providing a brighter view at night, along with a Head-Up Display (HUD) that projects essential information onto the windshield, allowing drivers to stay focused.
Another of our must-mention features is the impressive 12-speaker premium Bose sound system with CenterPoint 360 technology that provided an immersive audio experience, no matter where we sat in the vehicle.
As this is the Middle East, it would be remiss of us not to mention the dual full auto air conditioner that kept us cool and comfortable throughout the day.
Lastly, but certainly not least, the dashboard features a panoramic display that merges two 12.3-inch screens for infotainment and the instrument cluster into a single long panel. This design not only enhances the modern feel of the cabin but also contributes to a sense of spaciousness. We found the infotainment system precise and user-friendly.
Powerful & Precise Performance & Protection
Finally, it was time to get out onto the roads.
Our MX5 test-drive model housed a capable, four-cylinder, 2.5
The thoughtfully designed cabin is outfitted with soft-touch plastics, premium Nappa leather and a range of convenient gadgets.” “
T-GDI engine coupled with an 8DCT transmission. This meant a more than adequate 277hp and 246Nm of torque to play with.
For a vehicle of this size, we were satisfied with its acceleration capabilities. Despite seeming slightly slow for quick bursts, once the SANTA FE got going, it proved more than capable of reaching motorway speeds.
As we made our way around the city, we commented positively on the SUV’s balance and suspension, along with the responsive nature of the braking system.
Cruising around in what we can only describe as ultimate comfort and style, the vehicle’s all-wheel-drive system ensured a smooth and safe driving experience throughout the day as it continuously distributed power to the front and rear wheels, according to driving conditions.
Safety and assistance-wise, Hyundai has ensured the MX5 is jam-packed with everything needed to keep you and your loved ones safe and secure.
The SANTA FE features an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electric Stability Control (ESC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), front and rear disc brakes, a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Front & Rear Parking Distance Warning, Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist (rear), Blind Spot Warning, Lane
Follow Assist (LFA), Forward Collision Avoidance, Smart Cruise Control, Remote Parking Assist, an Around View Monitor and 10 airbags, amongst others. No matter where we drove, we always felt relaxed and confident, knowing we were in safe hands. By the time we found ourselves back at First Motors, it was clear that the SANTA FE MX5 was an ideal vehicle for both day-to-day driving and extended road trips. We only wish we had more time to spend in this oasis on wheels.
Our Verdict
The all-new Hyundai SANTA FE MX5 is beautiful to look at inside and out and offers a wide range of conveniencebased features and technology, along with a safe and smooth driving experience. ✤

TIMELESS ELEGANCE
Rolls-Royce has unveiled its highly exclusive Scintilla Private Collection.
The marque recently unveiled the new offering as a grand tribute to the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy mascot. This exclusive collection, limited to just 10 examples worldwide, embodies the ethereal beauty and enduring elegance of the Spirit of Ecstasy, a symbol of luxury and sophistication that has defined the Rolls-Royce brand for over a century.
The Phantom Scintilla derives its name from the Latin word for 'spark' reflecting the fleeting yet profound impression the Spirit of Ecstasy imparts. This Private Collection is more than just a vehicle; it is a masterful piece of art that encapsulates the grace, dynamism and otherworldly allure of the Spirit. Its design and craftsmanship draw heavily from the historical inspiration behind the mascot – the Greek marble statue, The Winged Victory of Samothrace –which captured Rolls-Royce Managing Director Claude Johnson’s imagination over a century ago.
In Phantom Scintilla, Rolls-Royce reclaims some of his original vision by integrating subtle references to The Winged Victory, blending historical inspiration with modern craftsmanship. Phantom Scintilla’s exterior is presented in a striking two-tone bespoke finish. The upper body is painted in Andalusian White, while the lower section is adorned in Thracian Blue, evoking the hues of the sea surrounding Samothrace. The delicate metallic flake in the paint mimics the sparkle of sunlight on water, complemented by a hand-painted coachline and wheel pinstripes in Spirit Blue, enhancing its elegant exterior. Inside, the Phantom Scintilla showcases unparalleled artistry and craftsmanship. The interior design incorporates an intricate embroidery motif that mimics the dynamic flow of the Spirit of
Ecstasy’s robes. This feature involves a staggering 869,500 stitches and took over 40 hours to complete, setting a new benchmark for interior complexity in a Rolls-Royce. The embroidery uses a range of colours and thread types to create a seamless and flowing graphic, which appears like a watercolour painting across the cabin. The centrepiece of the model is the Celestial Pulse artwork in the gallery, spanning the full width of the front fascia. This bespoke creation consists of seven ribbons, each milled from solid aluminium and finished with a finely grained ceramic that echoes the texture of Parian marble. The artwork captures light and movement, enhancing the car’s aura of elegance and sophistication. Additionally, a unique Starlight Headliner animates the interior with 1,500 fibre-optic 'stars' that twinkle in sequence, simulating the Spirit of Ecstasy’s flowing gown and adding a dynamic element to the cabin.
The attention to detail extends to the rear picnic tables, which feature a delicate graphic inspired by the Spirit’s fluidity. This graphic is applied using a masking technique, then hand-sanded and coated to create a subtle play of colours. The wood trim throughout the interior is finished in Arctic White and lacquered with iridescent metallic particles, a process that requires up to 19 coats of lacquer and more than 190 hours of work per car.
In unveiling the Phantom Scintilla, Rolls-Royce not only celebrates the legacy of the Spirit of Ecstasy but also reaffirms its commitment to crafting the most luxurious and bespoke motor cars in the world. ✤

An accomplished hotelier with decades of experience in the industry, the Complex General Manager of The Westin and Le Méridien City Centre Bahrain talks about his exciting new role, his plans for the properties and his travel bucket list!
Welcome to Bahrain and congratulations on your new appointment! Can you share what your role will entail and what you are most looking forward to?
I am delighted to oversee the operations at The Westin and Le Méridien City Centre Bahrain properties. I consider it a privilege to work here with such a talented team. Similar to my focus in all my previous roles, my priorities are to ensure that our guests receive our utmost attention and that we provide services that meet their expectations, all with a smile. In line with this, I am fully responsible for a wonderful team of colleagues whom I look forward to getting to know, and I aim to set an example for them of how we should treat our guests and each other. My job is to create an environment where everyone on the team can succeed, and I strive to lead by example.
The Westin and Le Méridien City Centre Bahrain are two award-winning hotels in Bahrain. How do you plan to further elevate the properties and their offerings?
It is still very early in my tenure, so I am busy building relationships with the team, our key partners and customers. That said, I have a varied commercial background and a strong interest in the culinary world, so I will initially focus on those areas to build upon what are already very successful properties. Additionally, I want to review our excellent sustainability initiatives and our wellness strategy, both for our guests in the unique Heavenly Spa by Westin and within the hotel teams. I look forward to building on the existing local community partnerships and exploring avenues for further growth. Finally, I want to see how we can innovate and create new guest experiences that are unique to us and our brands.
As a seasoned hotelier who has worked with multiple international brands, what makes Marriott Hotels particularly appealing to customers?
I have a history with Marriott that dates back to 2001. I have witnessed the incredible emergence of the Marriott Bonvoy programme and the power it has in creating loyalty beyond reason. Marriott International is the largest hotel company in the world, with more than 30 brands and nearly 9,000 hotels in 141 countries and territories. No other company can provide such a diversified portfolio of hotels and offer choices to every kind of consumer in almost every country. What also stands out is the consistent quality from hotel to hotel and country to country.
Having lived in the Middle East for many years, what do you enjoy the most about living and working in this region?
I have lived in the UAE, KSA and now Bahrain. Despite this extended period, I am always learning about the heritage and culture of each destination. What stands out to me is the kindness and friendliness of the people, as well as the incredible life experiences that my family and I have had. I feel I am on an amazing journey of curiosity and discovery and I am delighted to be in Bahrain for this next leg.
Do you have any travel destinations on your bucket list that you haven’t had the chance to visit yet?
Petra, Jordan – one of the oldest cities in the world that we would love to explore; Salalah, Oman – we would love to experience the monsoon/khareef season and its natural beauty; Tokyo, Japan –a destination for cultural discovery and delicious food; and Italy – I love Italy and I look forward to visiting Sicily very soon. ✤
ISLAND INSIDER
Khalifa Bokhammas
Director of Sales, The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa
Congratulations on your new position! Throughout your career you've worked with many international brands. How does it feel to join one of Bahrain's largest hotel groups and what will be your top priority in your new role?
Joining Gulf Hotel Bahrain, a cornerstone of the Kingdom's hospitality industry, is an incredible opportunity. The hotel’s rich history and reputation for excellence create a solid foundation for future growth and success. I am excited to contribute to this legacy and work alongside a dedicated team of professionals. My top priority will be to solidify Gulf
Hotel Bahrain's position as the premier choice for both business and leisure travellers. This involves a multi-faceted approach, including enhancing our guest experience, optimising revenue generation and strengthening our brand presence in the market. By focussing on these areas, we can drive sustained growth and ensure the hotel's continued success.
Having nearly 15 years of experience in the industry, what’s the most exciting part of being in sales?
The most exciting part, especially with nearly 15 years in the hospitality
industry, is the thrill of building lasting relationships. It's more than just closing a deal, it's about understanding a client's needs, exceeding their expectations and becoming a trusted advisor. Every new challenge, every opportunity to innovate and every satisfied client is a testament to the dynamic and rewarding nature of this role. In the hospitality industry, it's particularly gratifying to be part of creating unforgettable experiences for our guests.
If you could describe Bahrain’s hospitality scene in three words, what would they be? Warm, authentic, dynamic.
MASTERFULLY MEDITERRANEAN
With 13 years of hospitality experience under his belt, Leonidas Zervakis, Chef de Cuisine at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa, brings his culinary expertise to Yamaz restaurant. Discover his food inspirations, favourite ingredients and signature dish.
Having honed your skills across Europe with expertise in Mediterranean cuisine, how do you integrate those influences with local Middle Eastern flavours?
My experience across Europe specialising in Mediterranean cuisine has shown me how seamlessly these flavours complement local Middle Eastern influences. Greek cuisine, in particular, has deep historic ties with the Middle East, so integrating these elements feels very organic. For instance, dishes like gyros, which are closely related to shawarma, reflect the shared culinary traditions between these cultures.
At Yamaz, I focus on highlighting the essence of traditional Mediterranean flavours while enhancing them with local spices, herbs and techniques. I enjoy using ingredients like extra virgin olive oil and oregano, which are staples in both Greek and Middle Eastern kitchens, and incorporate them into dishes that speak to both traditions. My aim is to create a dining experience that feels familiar yet exciting for guests, bridging the gap between these two rich culinary heritages, while keeping the flavours balanced and authentic.
What are your plans for Sofitel Bahrain’s Greek restaurant, Yamaz? Will there be a change in the menu and what can guests expect?
My vision for Yamaz is to make it one of the most renowned Greek restaurants in the country, the ‘place to be’ for those who want to enjoy the finest food, exquisite grapes, incredible sea views and
create memories that will last a lifetime. Our menu is constantly evolving, adapting to the seasons, so guests can always look forward to fresh, exciting dishes. There are some truly amazing dishes coming soon to Yamaz that I can’t wait for everyone to try!
What is your favourite cuisine and which Greek ingredient do you enjoy working with the most, and why?
As a native Greek, Mediterranean cuisine, particularly Greek cuisine, has always been my passion. Through my dishes, I aim to bring guests flavours and aromas that remind me of my childhood. In Greek culture, we live by the motto ‘sharing is caring’. My favourite ingredients are always extra virgin olive oil and oregano. These are essential elements of Greek cuisine and I use them in almost every dish at Yamaz. They add authenticity and a touch of home to each plate.
Could you share the inspiration behind your signature dish and what makes it special?
Our signature dish at Yamaz is the Feta Phyllo with Tomato Chili Jam. It's a traditional dish with a modern twist. Feta cheese and tomatoes are very popular ingredients in Greek kitchens and I’ve always been drawn to the sweet and spicy flavour combination. This dish brings together all the key flavours – spicy, sweet, sour and salty – which for me, is the perfect umami experience. The crispness of the fried phyllo pastry paired with the creamy texture of the melted feta makes it truly special. ✤
REFINED ITALIAN FLAVOURS
Embark on a culinary journey of gourmet dishes and tantalising tastes as Apple Sharma explores Primavera's new gastronomic concept.
If there's one place where Italian cuisine truly blossoms on the island, it's Primavera at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. Its name, meaning ‘spring’ in Italian, captures the essence of renewal and vibrancy that defines this fine-dining destination. Relaunching this month with a fresh concept and revamped menu by acclaimed Head Chef Mirsha Moreno, I was excited to experience its new offerings and confirm its place among my top picks. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the lovely Restaurant Manager Sergio Svriz, who explained the new concept. Literally meaning ‘contemporary tavern’, Osteria Contemporanea celebrates Italian culinary heritage, focussing on local, seasonal ingredients and reinterpreting classic dishes with a modern twist. Chef Mirsha joined us to present her speciality creations, each element made in-house with the freshest ingredients. Sergio also shared some of the new offerings, including the Aperitivo Beverage, Tiramisu and the Balsamic Trolley experience featuring a 25-year-aged balsamic vinegar from Venturini Baldini, renowned for its exceptional quality and rich flavours. Much like its name, entering Primavera feels like stepping into an Italian spring day, with an interior that blends elegance and freshness. Soft beige, brown and cream tones create an inviting ambience, while beautiful flower arrangements, pristine white linen tablecloths, elegant crockery and lily centrepieces exude sophistication. Along the walls, cushioned bench seating with muted pillows adds warmth and comfort to the minimalist design. The setting strikes a perfect balance between intimacy and
spaciousness, making it equally suitable for romantic dinners and sophisticated gatherings. A modern partition with a metal lattice subtly separates the main dining area from a private space with grape cellars, overlooking the glass-enclosed kitchen. Large windows flood the room with natural light and offer views of the lush outdoor terrace, perfect for al fresco dining in cooler weather. Taking our seats, the meal began with Kalamata olives and a breadbasket of tomato and rosemary focaccia, sourdough rolls and pane carasau, served with award-winning Marfuga Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which added a distinctive, rich flavour. Off to a great start, silver service by our friendly waiter, Kevansh, only enhanced the fine-dining experience.
The first appetiser, Ricotta Fatta in Casa, showcased homemade ricotta with colourful tomatoes, fresh basil and a drizzle of the 25-year-aged balsamic vinegar, siphoned tableside from an oak barrel. The velvety cheese, tangy tomatoes and rich balsamic were a marriage made in flavour heaven. We enjoyed it so much that we added a few drops of the vinegar to our olive oil to savour its complex cherry and plum notes.
Next came the Insalata alla Mediterranea – a vibrant dish featuring zucchini, seared red peppers and pistachios. One of the prettiest looking salads I’ve ever seen, the crisp vegetable ribbons brought out the essence of ‘Primavera’ on a plate, singing spring tunes on my palate.
Both salads were standouts for me, showcasing Chef Mirsha's ability to elevate simple ingredients into culinary masterpieces. Our next course, the Pizza Tartufo, featured a surprising truffle
mushroom cream base instead of tomato sauce. Topped with gooey scamorza cheese and shaved black truffle, this gourmet pizza elevated the classic to fine-dining level. The earthy truffle flavours, creamy cheese and thin, crispy crust made for a perfectly light lunch delight. Even as someone who usually dislikes mushrooms, I found myself loving this dish.
The Risotto Verde followed – a creamy blend of rocket, kale, spinach and pecorino cheese. The silky rice was cooked to perfection, with a delicate spinach flavour, complemented by the slight tanginess of the pecorino – each forkful of this luscious dish left me craving more.
It was now time for some protein and the Spaghetti alle Vongole didn’t disappoint, featuring freshly prepared spaghetti tossed with Bahraini clams, garlic, parsley and tomato. The sauce resembled a rustic salsa, generously coating the spaghetti and filling the clam shells with fresh, vibrant flavours. Best of all, there wasn’t a hint of the fishiness that often accompanies seafood pastas.
The pièce de résistance, however, was the Guancia di Manzo Brasata all'Aceto Balsamico – slow-cooked Wagyu beef cheek, served with pomegranate, polenta and pimento. Beautifully executed, the tender meat, almost falling apart at the touch of a fork, was paired with a rich beef and balsamic reduction, further enhanced by the 25-year-aged vinegar. The silky polenta complemented the dish perfectly, while the pomegranate dressing added sweetness and brightness to the plate.
We ended our meal with two exquisite desserts. The Signature Tiramisu Al Carrello, prepared tableside on a trolley, was a theatrical creation with layers of classic espresso-soaked savoiardi biscuits, topped with mascarpone espuma from a foam gun and our choice of toppings. I opted for cacao nibs and coffee syrup, while my companion chose fresh strawberries. The result was a soft, creamy and decadent dessert that dissipated into the palate like a wisp of cloud.
The Cheesecake Siciliano was another standout – light as a feather and served with sour cream ice cream and crumble orange confit. I've never tasted a cheesecake where simple flavours were elevated to such decadent heights. The homemade sour cream ice cream was a first for me and I could’ve easily had a bowl of just that.
As we concluded our meal with espresso and a selection of chocolate truffles, I couldn’t stop singing Chef Mirsha’s praises –her creative flair had truly surpassed all expectations.
Primavera offers an exceptional Italian fine-dining experience, with stunning presentation, sublime flavours and impeccable service. It has secured its spot amongst my favourite restaurants and is one that I’ll be returning to time and time again! ✤

GRACEFULLY PERSIAN!
Setting itself apart from the prevailing dining scene by positioning itself as a culinary destination that effectually captures the radiant spirit of Persian cuisine through a meticulous blend of tradition with contemporary touches is – Banu.
On entering, we were immediately absorbed by the venue’s bold and intriguing atmosphere. Large expanses of wall coloured in alluring shades of deep teal and burgundy elegantly complement the plush velvet seating in blue and gold. Above, ruby-red chandeliers adorned with crystals cast a warm and enchanting glow. But it’s the impressive artwork here that truly draws your attention.
The large gallery-style paintings and smaller vignettes narrate a captivating saga of a woman’s journey and transformation that’s best admired in person. Hence the name Banu, which means ‘grand lady’ or ‘princess’ in Persian, and it couldn’t be more fitting! The kind staff guided us to our table and, once seated, it wasn’t long before we were greeted by one of the driving forces behind the business, Hanieh Mirbaha. Both co-owner and Head Chef of Banu, she founded the restaurant alongside her husband Ebrahim Ali. As we learnt more about the place, our gracious host beamed with pride as she shared that all the recipes are cherished heirlooms passed down through generations of her Persian family. And the team at Banu takes painstaking efforts in recreating that truly authentic experience of flavours. After perusing the menu, we started off with a selection of appetisers, the first of which was the Mast O Mousir, a creamy yogurt and shallot dip that had a pleasing garlicky taste but with a subtle hint of sweetness. Next came the Mirza Ghasemi, made with smoked eggplants that had been charred to perfection and then mixed in with a vibrant tomato sauce, garlic and silky eggs to create an immensely satisfying morsel. This was followed by one of Banu’s best sellers, the Kashk E Bademjan. The preparation blends sautéed mashed eggplant with walnuts, sizzled dried mint and fried onions, topped with kashk (a rich whey sauce that’s a common Persian ingredient with a luscious and tart taste), all arranged into a delectable dip with textures and layers of flavours that we couldn’t get enough of. All the above were served with freshly baked bread and I genuinely couldn’t think of a better way to get started. Rounding out the appetisers was a creation by Chef Hanieh named the Shirazi Special salad which was a burst of vibrant flavours. Comprising a regular Shirazi salad of finely chopped cucumber, tomato and onion with lemon and olive oil dressing, which is then topped with Zaytoon Parvardeh – a mix of olives, walnuts and pomegranate crushed together - and finally finished with thick cubes of feta cheese. It was an instant hit at the table! Then came the intensely flavourful Persian stews – Khoresh E Gheimeh and Khoresh E Ghormeh Sabzi. The former, a typical Persian gravy made with lamb and yellow split peas in a seasoned tomato-based sauce and garnished with matchstick fried potatoes, was truly good. But it was the latter that left me absolutely mesmerised! From the earthy, pungent flavour of fenugreek and several other herbs to the dried Persian lemons that added a distinct sourness and complexity to the foundation of the stew and then finally, the tender chunks of lamb. Served alongside steaming saffron rice, every spoonful of this was a little
moment of rapturous bliss!
And just when we thought we couldn’t manage any more, a massive platter of Banu’s Mixed Grill graced our table. Abundant with the best grilled meat options, the dish is a grand feast that’s designed for sharing among four to six diners. It featured succulent skewers of Kabab Koobideh, made from marinated minced lamb meat; Joojeh Kabab, which were chunks of chicken marinated in saffron, turmeric, yoghurt and lemon to create the tenderest and juiciest bites; Kabab Barg, my personal favourite of the lot, boasted meat first butterflied into thin layers and then marinated and grilled to perfection; Kabab-e Negini, an eyecatching medley of lamb meat with pieces of saffron marinated chicken; and finally the mouth-watering Persian lamb chop called Shishlik. The tray also comes with seasoned onions, pickled red cabbage, grilled tomatoes and steamed rice.
Throughout the meal, I eagerly sipped on a refreshing drink called Tokhm e Sharbati, a golden elixir of sweetened basil seeds, rose water and saffron.
As we neared the end of our feast, Hanieh, ever attentive, pointed out we hadn’t yet tried Banu’s famed Tahchin and it took only a minute of her describing it to have us completely convinced. The dish, appearing like a cake, is layered with saffron rice, seasoned yogurt and either lamb shank or chicken (we opted for the lamb), and topped with more rice and ultimately Zereshk (Persian barberries) and fried onion. An amalgam of gratifying textures and flavours made every bite utterly comforting and deeply satisfying. One of my favourite things was its wonderfully crunchy golden outer crust. For the final main course, the Baghali Polo Ba Mahicheh served
up a whole lamb shank covered in spices and slow cooked for hours, resulting in a true masterpiece. It came accompanied with fragrant dill rice and fava beans. Every bite we took melted in our mouths with all its sumptuous flavours.
Concluding the culinary journey on a sweet note, we tried the Faloodeh, a zingy traditional dessert similar to a sorbet. Additionally, the Bastani Sonati – comprising luscious scoops of saffron and pistachio ice cream, prepared in-house – proved to be the ideal finish, leaving a lingering sweetness and a perfect ending to this incredible meal.
I departed Banu thoroughly satisfied and certain to return again. ✤

KEBABS GALORE
There’s something inherently comforting about familiar flavours, especially when they’re crafted with expertise that honours tradition while offering something fresh. The Great Kabab Factory (TGKF) does just that. Having visited its outlets in India before, I was thrilled to see a new branch open in Bahrain. The concept is as intriguing as it is delightful — a buffet where the food comes to you, allowing you to savour each dish at your leisure. With a rotating menu that changes daily, every visit to the restaurant feels like a new adventure, yet your favourite dishes are always within reach, thanks to the option of requesting repeats of any you particularly love.
Located in the heart of Saar, TGKF enjoys a prime spot near some of Bahrain’s iconic eateries and its ample parking makes the visit even more convenient. From the moment I walked in, I was warmly greeted by the staff, with Operations Manager Amod Dimri personally ensuring I was comfortably seated. The restaurant’s décor strikes a harmonious balance between traditional Indian elements and modern elegance. Gold accents add a touch of opulence, while rich indigo hues create an inviting, serene atmosphere.
After a brief walk-through of the menu and a discussion of my spice preferences, the culinary journey began. The meal started with the signature salad — a refreshing mix of watermelon, muskmelon and cucumbers dressed in a strawberry vinaigrette. It was a perfect antidote to the summer heat, light and invigorating, setting the tone for what was to come.
Our hostess then brought a traditional Indian cutting chai glass holder and presented us with Tomato Dhania Ka Shorba, a tangy tomato and coriander soup paired with Bakharkhani, a lightly sweet bread with fennel and black seeds. This combination was both comforting and flavourful, a lovely prelude to the more substantial dishes that followed. For drinks, I opted for the Santara Ka Mantra, a vibrant blend of orange juice and Indian spices, while my companion chose a Spiced Guava drink with a surprising chilli kick — a refreshingly unique twist.
The non-vegetarian fare began with the Galouti Kabab, a meltin-your-mouth delight made with a secret blend of spices and tenderised meat. Paired with ulta tava paratha, a soft saffron bread, it was an instant favourite. The server also brought an array of chutneys, each carefully selected to enhance the flavours of the dishes. The Burrah Kabab, a traditionally prepared lamb chop, was so tender it practically fell off the bone, with the right touch of exotic seasoning.
As the kebabs kept coming, we were encouraged to indulge in as many servings as we liked from the unlimited menu. The Tandoori Kukkad (chicken), typically a dish I find too generic, was a revelation — tender and bursting with flavour. The seafood offerings followed, with the Achari Fish Tikka, a juicy, perfectly cooked pickled fish, and Prawns 65, fried to perfection and tossed in a fragrant South Indian-style sauce with curry leaves and mustard seeds. The Lehsooni Murgh Tikka, a boneless chicken dish flavoured with garlic, and the Gilafi Mutton Seekh Kabab, spiced to perfection, were also standout choices. Despite being a self-confessed meat lover, I couldn’t resist trying a few vegetarian starters, and I was pleasantly surprised. The Nilgiri Aloo, tangy and caramelised potato with coconut and
curry leaves, was a particular highlight, while the mushrooms in Khumb Ke Tinke and the pineapple in Faldaari Chaat offered delightful bursts of flavour.
Before we transitioned to the main course, there was another surprise in store — a unique Jalebi Chaat. Traditionally a dessert item, these crispy, unsweetened jalebis paired with yoghurt and savoury elements, created a dish that was as delightful as it was unexpected. The main course featured Hyderabadi Dal Tadka, a tamarind-infused lentil dish, and TGKF’s Factory Dal, slow-cooked in a tandoor to achieve a creamy, rich consistency. The Laal Maas, a spicy mutton dish simmered to perfection, and Murgh Rassa, a flavourful chicken gravy, were equally impressive. Alongside these, we also enjoyed vegetarian dishes including Aloo Gobhi and Kadhai Paneer, the latter incredibly fresh and soft, with the right amount of tang. A basket of assorted naans — garlic butter, mint and chilli — accompanied the meal, each freshly baked and incredibly tasty.
Just as we were nearing the point of indulgence, the fragrant Chicken Biryani arrived, served with a charmingly tiny bucket of raita. The rice was perfectly cooked, fluffy and aromatic, with the chicken infused with a medley of spices that made every bite a delight. Finally, a platter of desserts was presented in the most adorable miniature cookware. The Gulab Jamun, served in a tiny pressure cooker, was decadent, made with reduced milk solids (mawa) and sweetened just right. A little wok held Seviyaan Kheer — a mildly sweet milk pudding with vermicelli and nuts — while another mini pan cradled Moong Dal Halwa, beautifully toasted in ghee and topped with chopped nuts and mawa. The pièce de résistance was the piping hot Jalebis, topped with cool, creamy Rabri (milk-based dessert), creating a perfect harmony of textures and flavours. Despite feeling thoroughly full, I couldn’t resist devouring every last bit of the dessert, as if a new space had magically opened up to accommodate these sweet delights. My experience at The Great Kabab Factory was nothing short of extraordinary — a culinary journey through the diversity and richness of India, brought to life with creativity and care. It’s a place where every visit promises something new, yet the comforting tastes of home are always present. ✤

Moreover, culinary tourism also fosters direct interactions and connections between visitors and locals. These foodie adventures often include local restaurant tours, market tours, cooking classes and farm visits, to name a few, providing hands-on experiences that go beyond the conventional sightseeing.
Check out these interesting culinary travel experiences.
India
Indian cuisine is a vibrant kaleidoscope of flavours borne out of history, culture, tradition and, of course, spices. The wide variety of meals prepared here, whether from the northern, central or southern parts of the country, reflects the diverse culinary heritage through a rich tapestry of regional specialities that uniquely capture the essence of the different locales. Jump on a culinary tour and let them take you around the capital city of Delhi (renowned for its Mughlai cuisine) where you can tuck into fluffy stuffed parathas and slow-cooked rajma dal along with the famous tandoori chicken at award-winning restaurants. Or do a walking food tour in Lucknow, the City of Nawabs (viceroys), known for its old charm and, more importantly, the fragrant biryanis and delectable kebabs that will leave your mouthwatering. Tea aficionados can opt for a trip to Assam, the largest tea-producing state in India, and spend time learning everything about the entire process while also indulging in varieties of soothing teas. Then visit Mumbai and let a local take you around the city for lip-smacking street-food like vada pav, irresistible chaat such as paani puri and also some of the best vegetarian preparations you’ve ever tasted. Finally, head all the way down south to Kochi in Kerala, and this time not just to enjoy the delectable food, but also take a cooking class where you learn how to make your own dosa, idli sambar and delicious curries that include nonvegetarian preparations like meen porichathu (fish fry) or Kerala’s famous porotta with beef curry/fry!
Japan
Japan’s allure lies in its extraordinary juxtaposition of ancient heritage and cutting-edge modernity that offers an unparalleled journey through both its serene natural landscapes and stunning cities. But one of the most compelling aspects of Japan is its wonderful cuisine, an integral facet of its cultural identity that draws food enthusiasts from around the globe. Visit the bustling metropolis that is Tokyo, considered the epicentre of Japan’s culinary scene, that boasts the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world in a single city, making it a haven for those seeking top-tier gastronomic experiences. Or stroll around Shinjuku’s narrow back streets where sizzling yakitori skewers offer a taste of local life. Another unique option here are the completely
themed restaurants like Pokémon Cafe, Vampire Cafe, Pompompurin Cafe, Alice in Fantasy Book, Eorzea Final Fantasy Cafe, Ninja Restaurant and many others that are more than just a novelty and worth the one-of-a-kind experience. And most obviously, join one of the many food tours by locals to indulge in the most exquisite and authentic sushi and ramen preparations like you've never tasted before! Then also visit Kyoto’s historic geisha districts, Gion and Pontocho, where you can enjoy traditional meals while soaking in the charm of the city’s storied past. And Osaka, celebrated for its exuberant food culture, is a well-known paradise for street food enthusiasts. You can try all of Japan’s regional ramen styles there.
Italy
A quick conversation about food with most people will, more often than not, have them revealing their appreciation and enduring love for Italian cuisine. Naturally blessed with mesmerising topography and pristine beaches that by themselves are enticing enough to draw crowds from across the world, the country also boasts the most intriguing history, culture, architecture, art, literature and

GLAMOUR, SEDUCTION AND FAULTLESS TAILORING
The Autumn collection from TOM FORD promises exacting precision alongside liberating abandon.
From the endless permutations of opposites, the women’s collection brings masculine-inspired tailoring with a signature sharpness displayed in pantsuits with flaring trousers and long coats with high collars. Elegant blazers and cropped blousons marry shorts as wide as miniskirts. The sense of seductive strictness is continued in military-style chasseur jackets which contrast with long, free-flowing dresses that barely touch the body, while draped jersey draws liquid, sculpted silhouettes. Velvet swimsuits also make an appearance alongside figureenhancing, ankle-skimming dresses and all-in-one catsuits. Never afraid to flaunt her fabulousness, the TOM FORD woman embraces gold and silver lurex for day as well as evening. Highheeled shoes and neatly designed clutches and bucket bags complete the image, together with wide, square sunglasses. Her male counterpart is just as confident, favouring faultlessly tailored suits with peak lapels, military inspired peacoats and leather blousons with decisive hardware. Swinging from the softly formal to effortlessly sleek the collection pairs snug pullovers with knife-pleated tailored trousers, trucker jackets and pinstripes, suede and fresco wool. At night, the TOM FORD man is all for tailoring with a metallic lustre and a sprinkle of animal spots which also flourish in jacquard form on slinky shirts. These looks come in a dense and stylish palette of blacks, creams, blues and browns with accents of silver and blush, with boots, slippers or trainers accompanied by neat cross-body bags, clutches and capacious totes. ✤

RAP
I Lay Down My Life For You
By JPEGMAFIA
JPEGMAFIA (aka Peggy) adopts the role of an agitator with relentless energy on his fifth solo studio album, I Lay Down My Life For You.
The 34-year-old Baltimore rapper opens with the aptly titled i scream this in the mirror before i interact with anyone. A barrage of distorted metal riffs sitting defiantly above huge kick drums and a focussed ride cymbal rhythm.
On personal favourite, Sin Miedo, the beats and synths pulse with frenetic vitality bouncing all over the place. A palpable mix of noise, rap and punk rock guitars (the unexpected guitar solo kicks everything over the top).
Things relax on I’ll Be Right There For You as Peggy harmonises smoothly with the twinkling production and striking sample of Don't Walk Away by Jade.
When you least expect it, JPEGMAFIA goes on to further showcase his skill and unpredictability with the high-tempo Brazilian funk beat on it’s dark and hell is hot with Brazilian funk producer DJ RaMeMes.
With features by Vince Staples, Denzel Curry and Buzzy Lee, the album is a punchy and varied listening experience reflecting JPEGMAFIA’s dynamic artistry and continually evolving sound.
ROCK
No Name
By Jack White
Jack White returns uncontrollably exuberant and at his boisterous best on his sixth studio album – No Name. And simply put, this is one of the best albums out this year!
Jack, a founding member of The White Stripes, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather (among many other exploits), has a highly accomplished career spanning more than 20 years. And him still having something to say with this much vicious ferocity in the latter half of his career, is far from the usual. No Name sounds like an exemplary culmination of his best work from beloved previous projects but with a heavy (and much appreciated) emphasis on that undeniably colossal White Stripes sound of the early 2000s.
He kicks the door down with heavy distortion-tinged blues on opener – Old Scratch Blues. Then splintered fuzz-soaked riffs rain down like an unrelenting hail on Bless Yourself
Things abruptly switch gears to the sleek sounding That's How I'm Feeling with an absolutely joyous punk-rock chorus. On following songs, Rough on Rats, Archbishop Harold Holmes and the anthemic glam rock banger Tonight (Was a Long Time Ago), things subsequently just keep getting better. Do yourself a favour and give this record a spin.

What We’re (Still) Talking About
Sweet Scent of Dough Sick Of Work
Many years ago, UK television had an advert for a well-known gravy brand that featured cartoon kids following the aroma into the kitchen, beatific smiles on their faces and their noses turned heavenwards to take in the scent. Now, we know the sense of smell has a lot to do with taste and enjoyment of food, so the advert ticked all the right boxes. However, we’d be kind of surprised if anyone thought it a good idea to make a gravy-scented perfume.
But that’s exactly what’s on offer from the makers of Knead – the new scent from
the team behind Auntie Anne’s Pretzels. Apparently, ‘it’s a fragrance that captures the iconic aroma of freshly-baked pretzels. Infused with notes of buttery dough, salt and a hint of sweetness, each spritz evokes the nostalgic experience of passing an Auntie Anne's store’.
On the one hand, we can see the attraction ish, but on the other, we can’t help wondering what’s next – eau de French fries from the Golden Arches? Not to mention that there are those of us who only have to sniff a pretzel for our jeans to tighten!
Let’s be honest, we’ve all done it at some point in our working lives (not at FACT, we hasten to add), woken up and just thought ‘Nope, not today’. A swift fibbing phone call and we’re back in the comfortable cocoon of our beds for an extra couple of hours of shuteye.
In fact, a former colleague once told us that she suffered from sick building syndrome – sick of coming to this bloomin’ building.
Now a very sympathetic businessman has made it official. The South China Morning Post reported that Yu Donglai,
founder and chairman of Pang Dong Lai, a retail chain in China’s Henan province, has introduced what he calls ‘unhappy leave’.
In a move aimed at improving work-life balance, the boss has decreed that, if workers aren’t happy, they can apply for up to 10 days per year of unhappy leave and the administration can’t refuse.
It’s a great incentive for the company to keep its workers happy but we bet there will be certain days of the year when everybody is mysteriously miserable!
Lovin’ Foo
We know we said we’d try not to comment on the upcoming US presidential election. But honestly, there’s so much good fodder, it would be almost criminal not to mention some of it. And, being big fans of the Foo Fighters, we were particularly tickled by a tale coming out of Arizona where, at a Republican rally, former presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr dropped out of the race and endorsed Donald Trump. As RFK Jr was welcomed to the stage, the Foos’ song My Hero blared out over the gathered crowd, prompting Foos’
fans to enquire if the band was endorsing the former president and had given permission for the song’s use.
The answer from the band was a resounding ‘No!’ And Dave Grohl and Co have gone so far as to say any royalties earned from the performance will be donated to the Harris-Walz campaign.
Bit of an own goal for the former president – can’t think why he didn’t go for Kid Rock’s Redneck Paradise or Ted Nugent’s Stormtroopin’ then he’d have had no problems.
