ne of my favourite film scenes is from Pitch Perfect when Rebel Wilson is sprawled over chairs whilst her fellow a capella ladies are running laps up and down the stairs. “I’m horizontal running,” she says! THAT, is me. Though I went through a period of time when I lived at the gym, nowadays it’s all about Friday brunches, catching up on the latest TV series, and lazy days by the pool. So, I needed this body issue just as much as any of you out there who are looking to get back into shape the healthy way. Check out our ultimate A to Z guide to Get Your Summer Body on p27. a Galerie Nationale is currently playing host to the works on canvas from famed Moroccan writer and Goncourt prizewinner Tahar Ben Jelloun. The exhibition, entitled, Cultural Crossroads, represents Ben Jelloun’s first show in the Middle East and is the fruit of a friendship between Tahar and Guillaume Cuiry, director and curator of Dubai-based La Galerie Nationale. Running until September 15, the pieces debuted during Dubai Art Week 2018 in the hub of Alserkal Avenue. Importantly, the exhibition also marks partnership with the Institut de Monde Arabe, with 2018 the official year of UAE-Franco Relations. Poet and novelist Tahar Ben Jelloun is famous for his novels The Sand child and of his suite The Sacred Night, which was awarded the French Goncourt prize in 1987. Other novels include The Happy Marriage, Leaving Tangier, and L’Ablation. His journey into visual selfexpression started in 2010 by coloring a friend’s enlarged drawings. In 2013 he painted his first blank canvas and embraced painting like he embraced writing. Since then, he has been exhibited in Rome, Turin, Palermo, Marrakech, Tangier and in 2017 at the Arab World Institute in Paris. The Dubai show feature smore than 20 works on canvas; delightful expressions of natural joy in bright, engaging colours; flowers, butterflies and bird-like forms. Nothing overly heavy of complicated is evident, but the viewer can notice other symbols that recall shapes in Arabic script and illustrations on ancient walls with a visual reference to the hybrid nature of the Arab self-identity and multi-faceted cultural representation. The desert scenes convey the stillness and calm of Morocco’s southern sands, contrasted with strange buildings like long-deserted Casbah ruins. As with his written work, Ben Jelloun is a relentless explorer of the human condition and man’s relation with the world around him. As I persuaded myself that art – and particularly poetry – would save the world, I was convinced I needed to further my childhood scribbles. I have drawn and even painted before starting to write, however I never dared to consider these signs I was laying down on paper seriously. Today, I am lucky to be welcomed by La Galerie Nationale for my first exhibition in the Middle East. Although I have treated my painting work more professionally, I nevertheless claim the right not to take it seriously. What was taken from my instinct, I find it in painting, in my “advanced scribbles” laid across bigger spaces and now hanging on walls. I have often collided with luck, light and its mysteries. My hand was guided from within me, going joyfully from words to shapes to the most jubilant colors. My writings come from pain and suffering. I opened my eyes to the injustices and my first texts were poems of denunciation. Yet I refused to spend my life lamenting the fact that man is man to man, worse than wolf, worse than hyena. Some people bear a light and a grace that can make you forget about the tragedies committed by the bastards. My paintings are certainly born, sparked or even imposed upon by those solar beings. The paintings remind of the homeland, the back country of my imaginary world brewed from my travels, encounters and amazements. The walls are covered in elegant paper, whilst everything from the chaise longue to the work desk, the chic blackout curtains and the soft carpet too are all the kind of choices that only a high-end interior designer could make. To put it simply, whatever you vision when someone utters “tasteful” or “classy” – that’s what you’ll find in this accommodation. A huge King Bed is so neatly done that we almost don’t want to even touch it. But when sleep calls, we slip in between the plush sheets and have a wellrested night. All the rooms and suites at The St. Regis Dubai come with complimentary Wi-Fi as well as Butler Service – bonus! You’ll find all your usual comforts in the room including a well-stocked mini bar, tea and coffee making facilities, plenty of water bottles, lush bathroom amenities and lots of storage – in fact, the walk-in closet is a beautiful surprise, as is the Manhattan-ready double-vanity bathroom with a deep-soaking, traditional white bathtub and marble all around. There’s no fighting here for sink time, and even the separate shower has a marble seat inside for a more leisurely start or end to the day.

We would highly recommend the Grilled Black Pepper Octopus with Tarragon Purée, Onion and Lime - possibly the best version of Octopus we’ve tried in the city; and the Smoked Short Ribs with Parsnip Mousseline and Pickled Asian Pears – an innovative and tasty entrée. From the grill, we opt for the 180g Master Kobe Wagyu Fillet and the 320g Australian Black Onyx/Range Valley Striploin, with a side of Truffle Macaroni and Cheese, Potato Gratin and Creamed Spinach, and the Chimichurri and Peppercorn Sauce. There’s also an excellent choice of soups and salads as well as a “simply raw” section on the menu and, of course, delectable desserts like the mind-blowing Coconut Baked Alaska Rum Flambe. Satisfied is an understatement – you’ll be comparing every next meal to the one at J&G Steakhouse for a long time. For those who really want to get involved during their stay, the hotel also offers cooking classes and the must-try Caroline Astor Afternoon Tea – both will elevate your St. Regis experience.

n the outskirts of Abu Dhabi is one of the most wellknown hospitality brands – The Westin. Only here, it’s fringed by swaying palm trees and far-reaching dunes of green grass where golfers meet for a round of putting. Unlike the high-rises of the city, The Westin feels like it was made for that all-important need to get away from it all. Just the drive up to the hotel lobby sets the scene – a very country-style stone structure awaits to be discovered. In fact, the hotel’s website proudly states “City close, country quiet” and we couldn’t think of a more fitting description. The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa is the hospitality heart of the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, a 27-hole championship course, home to the PGA European Tour Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. And it’s this laidback setting that immediately has us at ease. The front desk staff are very pleasant to deal with and check-in is as smooth as can be. From the lobby, you can see out onto the golf

course and in the afternoon or at sunset, it’s a great place to be for beautiful dusk views.

COSY COMFORTS Our Twin Deluxe Room is a spacious size at 45sqm. The beds look good enough to jump on (but, first we Snapchat!). There’s a private balcony through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, overlooking refreshing views of the golf course surrounded by the resort’s landscaped gardens. The décor is kept neutral for a tranquil vibe – they really want this to be your very own sanctuary. Ideal for visitors who might want to nip to the city for shopping and sightseeing, or laze by the pool all day, but want a quiet lair to come back to after a long day. A min-bar, in-room safe, flat screen TV and good WiFi connection means that you get all your usual mod-cons. We love the mood-lit, tiled bathroom. It’s big enough for two people to share and though our shower head was broken (very promptly

FOOD ON POINT If there’s one thing that The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa is known for in the city, it’s the Bubbalicious Friday Brunch. The buzz at brunch, as soon as you walk into Fairways restaurant, is what will instantly put you in a great mood. The place is packed and we love people watching as colourful food stations of fresh salads, sushi, appetisers, meat and seafood, stir-fry, dim sum, wontons, satay and the most lavish dessert section, are all devoured by families, friends and those celebrating a special occasion! It’s one of the most interactive brunches we’ve visited in Abu Dhabi, with a spread of international cuisines and a range of live cooking stations. We loved the freshness of the ingredients and the dishes on offer – the grilled sausages and carvery station in general were a huge palatepleaser, as were the Arabic-inspired starters and the Chinese New Year specials (The Westin changes things up to celebrate any specific world events to reflect this at brunch!). fact magazine

In fact, our biggest surprise was the kids’ corner. We found ourselves (willingly) passing by for the delicious prawns and the fish fingers. Of course, we kept things sophisticated and tried ALL the cheese from the cheese counter too – a heaven send for those who prefer a savoury end to their meal. Dessert is just on another level – it’s a trip down memory lane as jars and jars full of penny sweets and rainbow candy remind us of our childhood days – what a great idea! The relaxing but lively Friday afternoon feast is accompanied by live music which adds a nice soothing touch to the surroundings. The good quality food continues throughout the outlets as we find when dining at the Shades Pool Bar. Our lights snacks include a fresh Caesar salad and a Grilled Shrimp Fajita – all are generous portions packed with flavour. In the evening, we’d highly recommend dining at the hotel’s Italian restaurant: Sacci. It serves up one of the yummiest and most authentic Parmigiana’s that we’ve tasted, followed by a liplicking Four Cheese Pizza, Asparagus and Prawns Risotto and, of course, the very traditional Affogato - Vanilla Ice-cream with Hot Moka Coffee and Whipped Cream- and the unusual, but tasty, Basil Pannacotta, Passion Fruit Compote, and Mandarin Jelly. Word of advice: leave room for dessert!

RECREATION GOALS The Westin is all about revitalised living and the facilities at this hotel represent that notion very well. During the day, you can workout at the well-equipped gym followed by a tan session by the lagoon-shaped pool. The familyfriendly environment of the 700m2 main pool, with its adjoining children’s area, is perfect for a refreshing swim or a rest by the water’s edge. The 250m2 lap pool, meanwhile, flanked by palm trees and featuring a unique wet deck area, is sure to leave swimmers reinvigorated and recharged. The reading quiz concluded its most successful year since its inception with almost 3000 students from schools across the GCC participating. 67 teams competed in the finals, which were held in Arabic and English in two age groups – Primary and Secondary. Teams answered questions from a list of books by Festival authors and the winners were awarded trophies, certificates and book vouchers. This year marks the 7th that Chevron has sponsored the competition, which has become an integral part of the company’s event calendar.

When Nissan unveiled the new 2017 Altima, it was clear that the motoring giant was ready to play in the big leagues. The much-loved mid-size sedan has had a total do over and FACT got behind the wheel to put the car through its paces…

he Altima is already a popular model in the UAE and the region. In fact, if we got 10 dirhams for every Altima we passed on the roads on a daily basis, let’s just say that we could probably quit our day job. Drivers love the Altima for its reliability, its no-fuss features, its ability to accommodate the family but also cater to the needs of the the every day businessman, and, of course, for its performance. When all’s said and done, the Altima is what we’d be inclined to call “The One” in the real world. So, it’s no surprise that Nissan wanted to raise their game and bring a new and improved model to its fleet. A fresh new appearance means that what we now face is a more aesthetically-pleasing body that isn’t just a beauty from the outside, but also comes packed with the goods under the bonnet and inside the car. Firstly, it’s the sleek exterior of the 2017 Altima that sees a noticeable change. The front end of the vehicle offers the most dramatic change with its energetic flow design, since all panels and pieces forward of the A-pillars are new – fascia, bumper, fenders, hood and lights. Many manufacturers have created cars that may resemble the front of the 2017 Altima (2017 Subaru Legacy, 2017 Mazda6 and even the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu), however, few have managed to execute the slick subtlety of design that Nissan has. 70

Two key elements are the redesigned V-Motion grille and boomerang-shaped headlights, similar to those found on the Maxima. The look is dramatically different from the 2016 Altima design, with a wide, deeply sculpted lower bumper, integrated fog lights (2.5SV, 2.5SL, and 3.5SL models) and prominent chrome-trimmed grille. The reshaped headlight units incorporate halogen high beam and projector low beam lights. LED projector low beam lights and LED signature Daytime Running Lights that sweep into the wide raised hood (available only on 3.5L SL grade). The rear of the 2017 Altima is marked by a new sculpted bumper with a dark lower accent, a new trunk lid and lower, wider boomerang-shaped combination lights that help provide a more expressive, higher quality appearance when approaching the vehicle from behind. The four-piece combination lights incorporate the tail and stop lights, turn lamps and backup lights. What makes the 2017 Altima more of a success is that Nissan took onboard customer feedback and added comfort features such as the standard Zero Gravity front seats which have been reshaped, and the woven cloth seating and door panel materials feature a more open weave pattern, providing a premium look and feel throughout the Altima interior. Luxury inside a mid-class vehicle – yes, please! Twin cup holders on the centre console now accommodate mug handles in response to customer input, so anyone who likes to take their morning coffee in a personalised travel mug, doesn’t need to worry about spills! What we loved about the interiors of this car is not only the amount of space and leg room for each passenger but the super functional seat adjustments

that could be easily adjusted and set to literally any position that was comfy for the driver. Yes, they have this feature in every car these days, but in the 2017 Altima, there was a sense of ease and efficiency and no “faffing” around – the seat does exactly what you want it to. It’s the little things that count, right? Along with the revised appearance, The X-Tronic D-Step CVT equipped in the 2017 Altima is among the quietest in its segment. This model has also improved in its coefficient of drag – to 0.26 Cd from the previous 0.29 Cd* (currently similar to the GT-R). The changes come from the addition of an active grille shutter (three percent gain), underfloor aero cover additions (three percent) and the new front and rear fascia and windshield designs (four percent). All of this defines into being best in class with standard fuel economy of 13.2 KM/L. And this is a feature that we can attest to – having done a few trips up and down the E11, stopping for petrol wasn’t a frequent occurrence and for that reason alone, we’d highly recommend the 2017 Altima. Nissan has also stepped up the safety technology by adding its First in Class Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW), the Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Forward Emergency Braking (FEB), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). The new steering has been reshaped and tuned to provide real time road input and precision (available only on SL grades). These have to be the features that REALLY went to work out on the UAE roads. If there was traffic, the PFCW was a great tool to have in giving the driver a safe prediction on how much distance to keep between themselves and the car in front of them, whilst the FEB was a good reminder of constantly paying attention to when other drivers come to a sudden stop or slow down. The 2017 Altima’s refined interior design follows the new Gliding Wing design language. Central to the new look is the revised C-stack with available 5.0-inch and 7.0-inch displays for the Navigation with Mobile Apps. When it came to the in-car system – we were able to connect faultlessly every time and had no issues with anything from music to navigation, radio frequency or making calls from the steering wheel. Traditionally, the Nissan Altima is a family-friendly sedan that has been around since the early 90s. It’s grown over the years as it’s gone through a number of redesigns. In our resident petrol head’s opinion, the 2017 Altima is a progressive vehicle that is just as ideal for the suit-and-tie executive as it is for the nine-to-five parent on play date duty. And as the saying goes: “get you a car that can do both” – this might just be THE ONE. ✤

More than 1,000 athletes from 32 countries travelled to Abu Dhabi to take part in MENA IX Games, which was the first major sporting event ahead of SpecialOlympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019. Special Olympics IX MENA Games and Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 were a part of the UAE’s National Vision 2021 that highlights full integration of people of determination into everyday society. Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 will be the most ‘unified’ games in history and promise to offer an inclusive experience for those with and without intellectual disabilities.

t appears as though everyone is talking about La Mer, the new beachfront development from Meraas Holdings in Jumeirah. La Mer represents a fun and vibrant outdoor space of waterparks and oceanfront boardwalks, aligned with quirky street art, hammocks, and showers made from buckets, making for an Instagrammer’s dream. . Slab bucks the trend of ‘bigger is better’ so often associated with Dubai restaurants, instead presenting a compact space with a pleasant outdoor deck and some of the most beautiful and innovative food offerings. Much like the food, the interiors are all about simplicity. Concrete floors, exposed pipework and an open kitchen make for a casual spot free of complications. The sleek industrial-style unit keeps things minimalistic with the exception of powder pink and blue salt and pepper mills. Slab’s “fresh ingredients, simple design and refined techniques” make for an interesting change for Dubai diners, creating an inviting concept, likely to pique the interest of the health-conscious. You won’t find any gimmicks here, instead the focus is on making gourmet food accessible to the masses. The menu is refreshingly concise and offers a small selection of salads, tartines (French open sandwiches) and a handful of main courses. While the marketing for Slab may promote the venue as a gourmet sandwich shop, this is a little limiting, for Slab represents more than just, albeit very great, sandwiches. Elements of fine dining immediately creep into proceedings with an amuse-bouche in the form of a jalapeño and cheese crostini accompanied by a wonderfully spicy mayonnaise. Strong service and immaculate plating reiterate the fine dining sensibility with a simple Quinoa and Broccoli Salad (AED 44) offering appealing presentation and textures; it’s a combination of black quinoa, broccoli cous cous, beetroot and pistachio. Similarly, the earthy Roasted Root Vegetables (AED 39) bring together caramelised carrots, celeriac and beets, but it’s the nuttiness from the goats cheese and walnuts which

elevate the dish. From the tartines we brave the humongous Habana Cheek (AED 59), assembled a la minute using bread freshly-baked in house. Ours comes chock-full of slow cooked beef cheek, unbelievably tender and full of flavour, melted cheese, turkey ham, and a citrus heavy Mojo sauce that brings a sense of Cuban frivolity to the dish – we’re in LOVE. We admired Slab’s ability to re-interpret the tartine toppings as stand alone main courses, of which we’d strongly recommend the Duck Confit (AED 79). The poultry is cooked in its own rendered fat for over twelve hours, resulting in a depth of flavour, accentuated further by roasted butternut squash and a Japanese plum sauce. The Beef Tataki (AED 89) and Dukkah Fried Chicken (AED 69) also impress, with the latter introducing us to the beguiling spice and nut blend of Jordanian Dukkah, that’s moreish and finger-licking especially in conjunction with the sweet chili honey dressing. While the selection of three desserts maintains the healthy emphasis that Slab strongly promotes, the individual

components fail to resonate. Yet, when taken as a whole, the flavours appear to blend well. The Lebanese inspired Mafroukeh Cheesecake (AED 34) combines a pistachio and semolina base with yogurt cheesecake and a fresh kiwi salad, and while the admittedly dense Dark Chocolate Bar (AED 34) is a struggle to finish, the salted caramel and peanut butter ice cream excel. Service throughout is friendly and staff appear not only well-versed in the menu, but passionate regarding the concept. In a city where service levels vary so greatly, it’s pleasing to see the teams ability to read the table and pre-empt the diners’ needs. Under the guidance of Chef Omar Rodriguez (formally of DIFC’s Peruvian spot Mayta) Slab is destined to do well amongst the sunken treasure chests that litter the shoreline of La Mer. Offering perfect food for the beach, generously portioned and reasonably priced, Slab’s emphasis on quality ingredients allows for a constantly evolving seasonal menu - a defining factor when it comes to choosing a dining destination at La Mer. ✤

he furnishings at Larte can only be described as contemporary pieces of art adapted to serve a practical purpose , from the vivid orange chairs through to the woven window screens, each is unique and innovative in it’s own way. Diners can choose between a more informal counter service ‘caffe’ or the more formal ‘trattoria’. Our host welcomed us warmly and was keen to offer recommendations regarding house specialities and dishes which would compliment one another. Macky, the resident mixologist, was at hand to create bespoke ‘bevande’ which suited our personalities and palates. We all agreed that we had never come across someone with such an intuitive manner as he delivered a series of elixirs which could not have complimented the menu or our cravings more perfectly. The Italian Mule and White Spritz are a must! I was delighted that the menu was very evidently weighted towards classic Italian staples. Truffled Arancini and Calamari Fritti afforded a respectful ‘nod’ to old school Italian cuisine, whilst seabass and beef carpaccio with edible petals exuded a contemporary vitality without severing classical roots. The starters were all decadent and executed perfectly. I would recommend Datterino and Burrata Focaccia in order to mop up any of the remaining delicious drizzles and dips which accompany the starters. Each of us chose pasta dishes to follow but we were equally tempted by the chicken, veal , beef and fish dishes on offer. The lobster linguine with it’s rich ‘bisque’ style sauce was sublime and the sharing Lasagne and Genovese Tortellini with porcini mushrooms silenced us completely as we savoured each mouthful. Luigi – the singing chefassured us that the reason it was so well received was down to the passion and obsession he puts into every dish. Indeed all of the staff were hand picked by Mario , the manager, who took time to explain the conception of LARTE and how he ensured that every element embodied their ethos of ‘bello, buono e ben fatto’ – the good, the beautiful , the well made. In the blink of an eye ‘dolce’ was upon us.

We all felt a little sad that this wonderful experience was reaching it’s conclusion. Paying homage to The Godfather I chose to ‘leave the gun ‘ and ‘take the (Stracciatella) cannoli’. An excellent decision. My dining companions were wowed by the inventive Chestnut Waffles and the delectable Larte Bueno. All too often substance is sacrficied for style but not in this case. Larte is a triumph , a tried and tested model which has been transposed in the Middle East with great effect. This should not simply be a haven for the fashionistas but a regular stop for anyone with a love of incredible food and an appreciation of La Dolce Vita! Larte is found on the ground floor of Building 10 in the Design District and is open Sunday – Thursday 8am- 11pm and Friday-Saturday 10am -11pm. ✤
