T
oday is day 12 of social distancing for me – a sentence I never thought I would be saying this year. My daily routine revolves around deciding what to eat for lunch and which online workout to pick from the hundreds I’ve saved on Instagram. It seems like just yesterday when I could wake up and arrange to have long leisurely lunches with friends. I would book group exercise classes through my gym’s app – sometimes back-to-back workouts on the same day – and the simple idea of walking out of the front door, was not something to seriously deliberate – I just did it, without blinking. But what I really thrived at was making plans. I would browse through hundreds of offers on Booking.com for hours, wildly saving every hotel, in all corners of the world that I wanted to visit, to my wish list. I talked about travel plans and birthday parties, summer wedding invitations, wellness weekends and beach days, all the normal things in life that we never thought could be halted so abruptly. Alas, no more. It came in as strong as the snap of Thanos’ finger and now we have a global pandemic which has forced the world’s population to re-evaluate everything around them. Personally, and as my family and friends will tell you, I am in general an optimist (with a dash of realism). As the whole world is at a standstill, I am, along with millions of people, doing my best to make the most of this sudden adjustment of pace and lifestyle. Naturally, my fight-or-flight mode switch for getting through covid-19 went straight for the positive bulb. We’ve been reminded to slow down, show gratitude and, above all, unite. In short, 2020 has changed my life. We’re being reminded to take better care of the environment, to check in on our neighbours and connect with our loved ones. People are reading, and baking, and painting, and resting. We are rediscovering the power of music, arts, books, eating healthy, sleeping right, sharing moments with those who matter and, above all, the meaning of nature and its impact on our lives. These are the true remedies. In the UAE, top food bloggers have come together and formed a platform to support small and local businesses, and when these same venues offer free hot drinks and special offers for first responders and healthcare workers, who in turn put in the hard hours to make sure that you, me and the wider community are safe and comfortable, that is the real triumphant spirit of humankind at its best. I am grateful for being here, in the UAE. A place where the leadership and authorities have tackled the coronavirus outbreak with urgency and grace. Our supermarket shelves are fully stocked, all of our favourite restaurants continue to deliver food straight to our doors – albeit with extra safety guidelines – and there is a genuine sense of connection between every person who is practicing social distancing. Perhaps there has never been a better moment in modern times than right now to put a value on our collective resilience. Each day we are closer to resolving this. Until then, we won’t let 2020 break us. Stay home, stay safe and, most of all, stay positive. ☺

GREEK GOODNESS Deriving its quirky name from memories of traditional canteens where Greeks gravitated to take a break, regroup and grab refreshments, Kilikio by Mythos is open at Depachika Food Hall in Nakheel Mall, Palm Jumeirah. AN ALL-DAY DESTINATION to leisurely discover casual Greek flavours and colours with friends or family, it’s an ideal setting to enjoy homemade recipes, immerse yourself in the Greek coffee culture and simply take your time. In the morning, opt for a typically Greek coffee and a koulouri, small round sesame breads and warm tiropita (delicious homemade pastry pockets with feta cheese). ELEVATED EATS AT BULL AND BEAR Created by Chef Luigi Vespero and Chef Giovanni Paolo Pintore, the new menu at Bull and Bear in Waldorf Astoria DIFC features cuts from the Meat Room, vegan dishes and locally sourced ingredients… BULL AND BEAR QUICKLY became one of the hottest new restaurants to launch in Dubai, a welcome addition to the city’s buzzing culinary scene. New for 2020, the New York-inspired venue has raised the bar further revealing a brand-new menu celebrating the culinary duo behind the concept – Chef Luigi Vespero and Chef Giovanni Paolo Pintore. Guests can look forward to indulging in delicious food offset by the dramatic sweeping views of the Dubai city skyline in the heart of the financial district. When curating the new menu Chef Luigi and Chef Giovanni wanted to ensure local farmers and suppliers were at the heart of the concept. The Chefs source organic vegetables locally such as peppers, kale, aubergine and lettuce, in addition to oysters and chicken. Guests will be treated to classic dishes with an added touch of luxury to offer an elevated modern twist. Upon starting the dining experience, diners will choose from a selection of appetisers including the classic Bull and Bear Waldorf Salad with organic kale, apple, celeriac remoulade, pulled chicken and walnut dressing; chopped tuna and caviar with pickled cucumber, white radish and avocado mousse; and seared Scottish scallops with pumpkin puree, amaretto crumble, radicchio and raspberries crisp. When discussing the new menu and the collaboration between the two chefs, Chef Luigi said; “Chef Giovanni and I have very similar cooking styles which is why we work together so well. I
have learned that we both share the same passion and respect for the ingredients and those who produce them. “Although we have worked in in different countries and kitchens, we have both worked under some of the most recognised chefs in the world, which has certainly given us inspiration for this new menu and made us who we are today,” he added. Following the starters, the main courses offer a selection of seafood, meat and vegan dishes, including Vegan Eggplant Parmigiana, Beef Rossini and Lobster Linguini to name just a few. For those who would like to live a carnivore’s dream, guests can choose from one of the cuts of beef from the newly opened Meat Room. The dedicated room has selected cuts available based on the feeding process of corn, grain or grass. For a sweet finale, diners can enjoy delicious desserts such as smoked tiramisu, black forest cherry with yoghurt ice cream and hazelnut chocolate fondant with dulce crispy pearls, toasted marshmallows, ice cream and bitter chocolate sauce. SEQUENTIAL M.A.D.Gallery Dubai presents “Sequential”, the first solo exhibition in the Middle East by celebrated French artist Antoine Dufilho…
A
captivating and avant-garde exhibit of twelve kinetic masterpieces, out of which ten pay homage to the seductive lines and precision engineering of coveted automobiles, Sequential offers art lovers the chance to discover the symmetry and captivating curves of automotive art. Two additional independent art works will also be on display that are sure to amaze and enthrall audiences: a reimagined interpretation of the Burj Khalifa, in all its awe-inspiring glory and the Kinetic Green Cube, an example of quintessential kinetic art, whereby the viewer creates the movement of the cube by walking around the sculpture. A signature feature in Antoine Dufilho’s sculptures are the optical illusions that he creates by rotating the base of the art works, whereby it feels as though the sculptures are in motion and moving, leaving the viewer surprised and transfixed. All twelve sculptures are available as limited editions of twelve pieces worldwide (eight pieces and four artistic proofs), except for the limited edition of one piece. Sequential will primarily showcase scaled down artistic interpretations of iconic automobiles spanning the Porsche 356, Porsche 911, Ford GT 40, Jaguar Type E, Lamborghini Aventador and for first time ever, four models of two car pairs, consisting of Bugatti and Ferrari. The exhibition took over 12 months to complete as Antoine Dufilho incorporated a new method called “anodisation” which effectively colors metal while retaining the metallic appearance of the material. Moreover, the limited-edition artworks are created by meticulously hand crafting sculpting rods and plates into successive layers and materializing the vehicle into a modern automotive framework, thereby revealing the contour of the car, and creating the illusion of movement as viewers walk past the art works. Antoine Dufilho’s educational background in architecture provides a conceptual foundation in which his innovative artworks are established, allowing him to create modern sculptures that are unique and alluring at the same time. The 12 art works include five sculptures created specifically for Dubai, including the iconic Burj Khalifa and four models (of two pair car sculptures) of ’The Bugatti Atlantic 1936 & Bugatti La Voiture Noire 2019’ and ‘The Ferrari F40 1987 & La Ferrari 2013’. The details of the never-before-shown sculptures are as follows: BURJ KHALIFA, (LIMITED EDITION 1/8) The Burj Khalifa is not only one of the most beautiful skyscrapers in the world, but also a towering symbol of the progressive spirit of the UAE and its ability to achieve the impossible. Inspired by the tremendous achievements of the 40

UAE, the sculpture of the Burj Khalifa has been reimagined by Dufilho in his signature style with bright stainless-steel plates spaced in voids to represent multiple floors, interrupted by groups of matte stainless steel plates that give a holographic illusion and dynamic sensation, when the observer walks around it. Meticulously and lovingly handcrafted to create a showstopping sculpture, the artwork is just as ambitious, grand and awe-inspiring as the original. ‘THE BUGATTI ATLANTIC 1936 & BUGATTI LA VOITURE NOIRE 2019’ AND ‘THE FERRARI F40 1987 & LA FERRARI 2013’ (4 LIMITED EDITIONS, EACH NUMBERED 1/8): The four new models juxtapose the old automotive models with the new automobiles, and what particularly sets these models apart from Dufilho’s usual sculptures, is that they are not handcrafted in stainless steel, but rather with anodised aluminum, which colors the metal while retaining the metallic appearance of the material. Six additional masterpieces complete the automotive theme, including: LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR Signifying a departure from his usual style, this time the kinetic artwork is no longer materialised by the color on the stems, but rather through 1,800 stainless steel beads suspended on bronze rods, all cut to different heights. MERCEDES W196 ST 9 A Formula One (F1) racing car produced by Mercedes-Benz for the 1954 and 1955 F1 seasons, the Mercedes-Benz W196 has been reimagined with the sculpture’s skeleton body as a pictorial interpretation of the “pigment removal.”
PORSCHE 356 This lightweight sports car was Porsche's first production automobile and has been reimagined by Dufilho in such a way that it retains its legendary status, yet seems more dynamic. While most sculptures take an average of two weeks to complete, the Porsche 356 required considerably more time and commitment, taking six weeks to complete. PORSCHE 911 The iconic 911 and identity of the Porsche brand, since 1963 has been reinterpreted to lighten the model while maintaining the overall morphology of the automobile, making it more complex to view with a multitude of curves. FORD GT 40 The quintessential high-performance endurance racing car, the Ford GT 40 went down in history as the car that broke Ferrari's winning streak at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Reimagined with a stainless-steel base and polished solid aluminum wheels, the Ford GT 40 comes alive and presents the illusion of movement, when the viewer looks at it from different angles. KINETIC GREEN CUBE The Kinetic Green Cube is reflective of the quintessential nature of kinetic art whereby the movement can be produced by the wind, the sun, a motor or even the viewer. The viewer can create the movement of the Kinetic Green cube by coming around the sculpture to animate the cube, while the colour affixed to the stainless-steel rods creates a holographic effect. ✤

THE CAPITAL OF ART Capital Club Dubai is unveiling phase one of its completed renovations and marking the occasion with an exhibition by renowned street artist and muralist, Paparazzi and famous works by Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso in association with Sconci Gallery.

ne of the leading places in Dubai’s financial district to do business, socialise and entertain, Capital Club Dubai celebrated the re-launch of the newly refurbished 4th floor with some of the art world’s biggest names. Four original and distinctive Andy Warhol pop art prints of Marilyn Monroe and three limited edition Picasso prints are on display and available to purchase, as well as Paparazzi’s Solo Exhibition, We Are All Human. On display in the Club’s new look gallery space, We Are All Human brings together individuals from all walks of life, spanning multiple millennia, who have had a positive effect on humanity. Inspired by the artist’s attraction to interesting individuals and significant historical characters, the exhibition is the first time that Georgian born, Cyprus based Paparazzi exhibits outside of Europe, and the show includes original artworks as well as three limited-edition fine art prints. Also, on display is the intricate diptych works that feature two keys parts of the human anatomy for contact, embodying the message of the exhibition. Best known for pioneering a revolution in Cyprus for the craft of street art, street artist and muralist Paparazzi is fascinated by different approaches to art and its relationship with the environment. In his work, he attempts to bridge the gap between street art with fine art through constant experimentation and the synthesis of styles, to give fresh meanings and a new depth to recognisable characters and twenty-first century iconography. Having curated many popular street art events around the world, Paparazzi is currently working on his solo artworks at Paparazzi ART studio and is one of the few artists in Cyprus that has embraced the art of graffiti and street art, having been at the helm of five solo and 26 group exhibitions to date. He most recently represented Cyprus for the 28 STARS European Union Art Show curated by GO Gallery in Amsterdam, Netherlands and is part of the Kaunas European Capital of culture 2020 in Kaunas, Lithuania. ✤

Velvet is definitely the perfect title for Lambert’s new album, as the sound is classic and the production smooth. The album’s core is a funk-driven, 70’s rock sound that is very different from his past work. Lambert effortlessly takes an old sound and makes it fresh for a modern audience. Album opener Superpower comes with a heavy bassline, smooth falsettos and some slick guitar riffs, and Lambert puts in a confidence that hasn’t been seen in his past work, with the lyrics only adding to the raw power of his voice: We can definitely hear the influence of touring with Queen in small moments of his album, and the team he worked with, including indie-pop engineer Tommy English, pop-rock producer Butch Walker and more, especially on Velvet: A Side. Glints of R&B, disco and dance-pop find their way through, without making the project feel oversaturated. To enjoy are songs like Closer to You, which opens as a simple piano-vocal ballad, before growing itself into a classic Pink Floyd-style slow jam, without making us question the transition. Velvet: A Side truly reveals the depths of Lambert’s talent, leaving nothing to be desired for the listener.

You’ll find it hard not to capture it all on your phone! But when you do put your devices down and just want to C.H.I.L.L – Palace Downtown has got you sorted. By day, the palm-fringed swimming pool is a stunning oasis. Surrounded by a beautiful landscape, this is the ideal place to soak up the sun in a plush chaise lounge or take refuge in the traditional Arabian tents of the Buhayra Lounge, where you can recline in comfort and dine on a large selection of mezze and more. We opted for a cool mocktail and a cheesy pizza – the ideal afternoon accompaniments. The service is to be commended here, the poolside staff were taking great care of the guests both young and old. There’s a dedicated children’s pool for little ones to splash in too. The Spa at Palace Downtown is one of the most breath-taking we’ve ever seen. Describing itself as an imperial sanctuary, some relaxation time here should be at the top of the list. An oasis of tranquillity, The Spa at Palace Downtown is an indulgent retreat that transcends expectations with its airy design and serene ambience. The expertise of the therapists combined with the finest ingredients and treatment methods, both modern and traditional, ensure that rest and rejuvenation are experienced and enjoyed during each ritual across dedicated floors for ladies and gentlemen. There are nine lush treatment rooms including two spa suites alongside an Oriental bath house with a hammam slab, Jacuzzis, monsoon showers, steam rooms, consultation fact magazine

Palace Downtown is the type of place where you will feel enriched with culture and tons of rest and recuperation. The hotel and its staff carry a sincere hospitality spirit in the midst of a cosmopolitan city – something we can really appreciate. For that reason, and so much more, we will be back here sooner rather than later. ✤

An Argentinian steakhouse with the character and flair of Latin culture and the sophistication of its Middle Eastern setting. Envisioned as an homage to the heritage of Argentina, Asado reflects the quaint and charming feel of a South American country farmhouse. The highlight of the culinary offering is the ‘Parrilla’, the open grill over which age-old traditional dishes are prepared. We would highly recommend the fresh and citrusy tastes of the Sea Bass Ceviche, the classic Empanadas including beef, chicken and cheese and onion, and the wildly rich and soulful Beef Tenderloin Steak with a side of creamy mashed potato and grilled asparagus. It’s the unique Mushroom Quinoa Risotto followed by a selection of sweet treats that sends us into epicurean heaven. This was our first time at Asado and will definitely not be the last. Another dining experience worth shouting about was the 50

The private table set-up saw a group of 35 fellow foodies in Abu Dhabi join David to explore Southeast Asian specialities through a brunch concept known as the ‘street food late brunch’ at Li Jiang restaurant. Curated by Tran Thanh Chung, Chef de Cuisine, highlights on the menu included food cart classics such as Korean BBQ, Peking duck, sushi and fried noodles. Following successful events at the Rosewood Abu Dhabi, Mazi at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort and 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant, Li Jiang at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal represented the ideal venue for the culinary journey with the Abu Dhabi-based food writer. Q THE SHOWSTOPPER The new generation Audi Q3 is the underdog that we’ve been waiting for in the luxury SUV market – loaded with tech, space and style. FACT takes a seat in the vivacious blue Audi Q3 – an enhanced, grown-up vehicle, which we soon learn makes for a solid daily drive.

he all-new Audi Q3 can be described in many words; striking, versatile, innovative and, for a compact SUV, rather captivating. The premium SUV has capacities that any Audi enthusiast and motoring aficionado will appreciate. As soon as you cast eyes on the car, its sleek and sporty octagonal design makes a classy yet bold statement: “I mean serious business” is what we imagine it would say, if cars could talk. It has a single-frame grille, slick LED running lights, large air inlets and strong muscles over the wheel arches, making this an Audi that has been well sculpted for a sharper appearance. The compact SUV has also grown in virtually all dimensions from its predecessor; it is 4,484 millimeters long, 1,849 millimeters wide and 1,585 millimeters high. Larger and more mature, the car has grown 3.8 inches in length, 0.7 inch in width and 1.5 inches in height, being blessed with a much more attractive and dynamic design. If you’re someone who likes to take short road trips or pack up the family for a weekend away, the Audi Q3 comes with drastically improved room. Its wheelbase, which has been stretched by 77 millimeters, offers tons of space. At the same time the Q3 is extremely versatile – thanks to the adjustable rear seats and height-adjustable loading floor along with numerous storage compartments. Depending on the position of the rear seats and backrests, the luggage compartment capacity is between 530 and 1,525 litres. For shopping trips, cargo space behind the rear seats grows from 16.7 cubic feet in the old Q3 to a more usable 23.7. When more space is needed, folding the second-row seats down 54

bumps real estate to 48 cubic feet that we fully utilised during a few grocery and supply runs to Carrefour and a number of malls. We found the loading and off-loading of luggage to be smooth and functional. In fact, for its neat, compact size, the Audi Q3 is slightly deceiving as to how spacious it is on the inside – a great and much-welcomed surprise. Rest assured, it’s not just baggage that gets a comfy seat, remember the Q3's upsized dimensions? They really pay off inside the car with the front and rear areas being sufficiently spacious for passengers too. The Q3's interior itself is also significantly upgraded, with a fresh dash layout that is anything but boring. It's clean and intuitive with clearly marked switchgear, and with quality materials like brushed aluminium and matte wood trim tastefully sprinkled throughout. Our tester's optional Sport interior package adds more supportive seats, whilst it’s in the details that we rejoice; decorative insert in silver aluminium and scuff plates with aluminium inserts, illuminated with the “S” logo – they all add that quality Audi finish to a vehicle that continues to impress the more we drive it around. There is also a standard panoramic roof which ensures that the cabin is kept light and airy, whenever you wish it to be. Combining good all-round visibility with a sporty seating position, the new Q3 offers the same comfort as the next larger vehicle category. When it comes to tech, you needn’t worry as the Audi Q3 is kitted out with the best. The operating and display concept of the premium SUV has been overhauled from the ground up, with even the entry-level model boasting a digital instrument cluster with smartphone interface allowing

Apple Car Play and Android Auto. The extensive infotainment is all controlled via a 10.1-inch touchscreen display in the centre console which, together with the air conditioning controls, is tilted ergonomically toward the driver. One of the best pleasures of driving is having your favourite playlist on as you venture on the open roads – the Audi Q3 makes this type of driving so seamless and easy with a tech-rich experience. The user-friendly touchscreen is very responsive to control music and navigation, whilst the legendary Audi sound system is as remarkable as you would expect from a vehicle of this calibre. On one journey from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, the drive was so enjoyable and relaxed, we’d be akin to say it felt like flying. There's no shortage of power points inside of the Q3. In the front, you have access to a wireless charging pad, two USB ports and a 12-volt outlet. For passengers in the rear there are two USB outlets and a 12-volt within easy reach. One major part of the new Q3 that didn't need a complete overhaul is its drivetrain. A familiar 2.0-litre, turbocharged I4 engine and an eight-speed automatic gearbox send power to all four wheels. With 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque on tap, the latter at your service from 1,700 to 4,400 rpm, it gets moving at a respectable clip. During our mostly highway drives, it was possible to get the Q3 to 100 kph in around 8.0 seconds. The safety features are top-notch too. The forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking comes as standard on the Q3. The full body of features includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, parking sensors and a crisp, 360-degree camera, which makes everything from parking to turning tight corners and cruising down the highway, safe and laid-back for 56

the driver and passengers. Put the Audi Q3 in Dynamic Mode and it reacts commendably, whilst the standard suspension setup gives way to controlled body roll and a firm pedal feel for confident stopping muscle. For everyday driving or trips between the Emirates, switch to the Q3’s Comfort setting to calm the steering and drivetrain, but if you find this a bit sluggish – as we did – keep the car in Sport Mode for better off-the-line thrust. The new Audi Q3 enters the UAE market with 35 and 40 TFSI engines. It features the cylinder on demand system, which switches off the second and third cylinder temporarily at low and medium loads, thus helping reduce fuel consumption in combination with the seven-speed S-tronic transmission. Three stylish trim line variants are available to give UAE customers even more opportunity to personalise their preference. The entry version comes with 17-inch alloy wheels and a high gloss package. The advanced version gives the customer 18-invh alloy wheels as standard, specific bumpers and contrast painting (full body paint available as an option) and an interior featuring a sporty aluminum trim. The S-line version has even more choice with sporty 19-inch alloy wheels, S line bumpers and full body paint (contrast painting available as an option) as well as the sporty aluminum trim interior. The Audi Q3 commands a powerful stance; it’s vibrant, practical and utterly inspiring. The brand with four rings has done it again and we would only encourage you to experience it firsthand. ✤

f you’ve had the chance to travel to India, you’ll know that it’s one place where food speaks to the language and culture of every state and community. From the rich aromas of north Indian cuisine to the delectable explosion of unique dishes from the south, food is a huge part of the country’s charm. Bombay Borough channels all the best parts of India, epitomising a wholesome dining experience with plenty of delicious stories – and surprises. Unlike a number of venues in DIFC, Bombay Borough is incredibly easy to find and has valet parking right outside the restaurant. A small elevator will take you up to the venue, which is a multi-layered space, spread over two floors; a lovely terrace to dine al fresco and a cosy indoor area inspired and immersed in Indo-chic ambience. Draped in elegant teals and sophisticated whites, the décor is a fusion of the modern French and British-era old bungalows of India, infusing the west with India, in a space where people can gather over good conversation and great food. Chandeliers hang from the ceiling as a well-stocked bar lines the room. Carefully-selected artworks are dotted around the venue, adding a classy touch of vibrancy to a very stylish eatery. The menu at Bombay Borough is nothing short of eclectic epicurean magic. Staying true to Indian roots and bringing in unexpected European twists, we weren’t quite prepared for the meal that was about to ensue. The idea is to serve up the very best of India in an approachable yet adventurous way. Flavours are authentic, presentation is contemporary and whole experience is larger than life – in the most Instagramperfect kind of way. We begin with a dish that, if executed well, is undoubtedly one of the best appetisers you’ll try at any Indian restaurant. The Aam Papad Paneer – a classic hailing from Amritsar – this is paneer and lotus stem tossed with special sundried mango and street food spices, directly sourced from the Punjab city. An amalgamation of sweet and sour, the fluffy paneer is like little butter-soft pockets coated in lime and spices which wonderfully contrasts the sourness of the sweet leathery cheese. It’s by far the tastiest coming together of creamy and crunchy textures! An impressive start. The Chilli Cheese Kulcha (mildly leavened flatbread) was by far the biggest revelation. A super simple concoction of mini kulchas is presented on a board, each stuffed with oozing chilli cheese; a modest yet wildly addictive bite. The Fiery Thecha Prawn is tossed in a coarsely-pounded green chilli chutney with crunchy peanut. This dish is a homage to the authentic Maharashtrian accompaniment of jowari bhakri with hirvi mirchi cha thecha; a chutney made of green chillies, garlic, peanuts and coriander. Here, 78

the fiery chutney is used to dress the sweetest, fresh prawns. UNREAL. Hot Plates and Street Grills is a part of the menu that is packed with robust, hearty choices. The Kashmiri Naan Kebab takes our breath away – literally. A larger-than-life hand-ground, mutton mince seekh kebab infused with kabab chini and served on a saffron-brushed naan, with a side of doon chetin – a Kashmiri yogurt dip. The juiciest meat we’ve tasted in a long, long time – please, just order it. The dish of the day for us had to be the Banana Leaf Wrapped Sea Bass. Taking our taste buds to southern shores, the fish is coated in Kerala spiced tomato chilli coconut sauce with pounded fennel seeds and curry leaf. We are yet to taste anything more flavourful than this gorgeous meaty fish, since the day of our visit to Bombay Borough. Another exquisite dish comes in the form of Mario’s Mango Prawns and Coconut Rice. A palate-awakening creation of prawns cooked in the traditional Goan “ambotik masala” –a deep-orange, spicy and tangy gravy, offset by the sweetness of ripe mango. It’s the rice steamed in coconut milk that really steals the show here. If there’s one thing that we highly recommend to order, it’s this. A side of Chur Chur Paratha will elevate the experience – a crispy, flaky and layered hand-crushed bread that tastes divine. Dessert is truly a celestial affair. The Bombay Ice Cream Sandwich is a throwback to childhood memories of visits to India whilst the Ras-E-Aam is a deeply clever and delicious invention of Bengali roshogulla nestled in rich rabdi topped with Gujarati aamras made with alphonso mangoes. It’s like a molecular marriage of gulab jamun and rasmalai, served atop a smoky cloud of liquid nitrogen – big points.

The drinks at Bombay Borough are some of the most detailed and yummiest. Everything from street-stallstyle Masala Chai infused with fragrant herbs and spices to Desi Mocktails including the tantalising Ooty Sunset (elderflower, cardamom, herbs and lime), the lip-licking Pink City (guava, lemongrass and raspberry), and the most famous of all – Masala Cola and varied lassi mixes – there is something for every guest. From start to finish, the staff at Bombay Borough are some of the most welcoming, professional, and knowledgeable. They are evidently proud of the restaurant’s concept and rightly so. Traditional Indian food is represented beautifully, whilst bolder options like ceviche and tartare also make an appearance. It’s a journey for every one of your senses, and we can’t wait to return for round two. ✤

s the sun sets over the Arabian Gulf, head over to this stunning location, kick off your shoes, sit back in one of their comfy chairs and start with your choice of sip in hand. The beautiful beachfront decor is simple with rustic hints, cosy warm tones and a spirited and welcoming ambience. With numerous seating options, guests can opt to dine indoors or on the decked terrace spilling out on to the white sandy beaches. It’s picturesque to say the least. Combine the view with either lunch or dinner and you have the perfect spot for a relaxed dining experience. As expected, we’re spoilt for choice with what to order. We begin with the highly 80

recommended and generously piled deep fried baby squid (AED110) with a citrus chilli dip. Packed with flavour and plenty of crunch, we’re off to a great start. The manager also recommends gambas al ajilio shrimps (AED90), garlic, guajlio chili, and once we take a bite, we know why he speaks so highly of this dish. It’s delicious! We are huge fans or burrata, slightly different but equally tasty, here the burrata (AED85) is accompanied with honey walnut pesto, radicchio, grilled pear and honey vinaigrette. An absolute must. After a short break and a few stunning Instagram-worthy photos, we move to our mains where the signature turf grain-fed beef ribeye (AED165) comes calling. Accompanied by chilli spiced fat chips, rocket salad, peppercorn jus – it’s a dish that’s made for true carnivores. While it may sound simple, be sure to try the seared salmon fillet (AED145) with garden fresh vegetables, tomato reduction and braised baby fennel. It’s filled with rich Mediterranean flavours and the fish is cooked beautifully. Dessert is indulgent and quite frankly what we came for! The blueberry cheesecake (AED45) - blueberry compote, digestive biscuit and cream cheese is a huge hit at the table. Much like the culinary offering, the beverage selection has an array of perfectly priced mocktails and bespoke cocktails - we try the Calypso - it was everything we wanted it to be and more. A selection of vino and hops are also available from AED55. And happy hour is an added bonus! Other Mediterranean dishes worth mentioning, and those that we would be back for, include the Atlantic mackerel escabeche with a Chardonnay broth, gooseberry chutney, garden vegetables and garlic chips. The vegan porcini ravioli, spinach salad, almond flakes, fried mushrooms and almond milk reduction is not just a dish made to please vegans but will also satisfy anyone with a penchant for earthy tastes and appreciation for good food. Service at The Beach House is warm, accommodating and filled with great recommendations. These are just a few attributes that will keep the crowds coming back. TIME-LAPSE MAGIC By now, we should all be used to light and colour manipulation. After all, we’ve been spoilt with choice when it comes to photo and video editing apps, and we all have someone to impress on social media. But with videos, there’s more than light and colour to manipulate – we can also manipulate time. The Huawei Mate30 Pro 5G is the perfect tool to help with this…

he opposite of slow-motion is time-lapse. These videos record change over time by showing a sequence of frames that are shot at set intervals. When the sequence is played back at normal speed, the action will look as if it has been sped up. In the past, photographers needed to hook an intervalometer to their cameras in order to take time-lapse videos. Fortunately for us, we can do the same thing with just our smartphones today. Time-lapse is a great technique for capturing a lot of subject matters, such as a long drive along winding roads or clouds moving beside you as you peek out from the plane – but none are mesmerising as day-to-night (or vice versa) time-lapses. There’s a reason why it’s referred to as the “holy grail” of timelapses Doing the holy grail with a traditional camera requires a good understanding of how to tweak camera parameters. Because of how the availability of natural light changes as the sun sets or rises, you’d need to set up exposure correctly before you start

(or on the fly), or you’d wind up with over- or under-exposed footage. But if you have a HUAWEI Mate30 Pro 5G, then it’s a different story. Powered by a Kirin 990 5G SoC and a fifthgeneration ISP, the HUAWEI Mate30 Pro 5G supports 4K low-light ultra-wide time-lapse video recording. The devices offer an Auto time-lapse capture mode that automatically tunes the devices for the optimal settings to ensure you get the best results in any scenario. Besides the Auto mode, you can manually set the frame interval or recording duration to fit your time-lapse needs. Of course, a Manual mode is also available for those who prefer to customise parameters themselves for artistic results. While you can take a day-to-night time-lapse video with just the smartphone, it doesn’t mean you should. The holy grail takes hours to capture – you don’t want to hold your phone in place for that long. Instead, plan for your shot. Before heading out, make sure you have packed a tripod for extra flexibility, and umbrella to stay cool under the sun or dry in the rain, and a power bank. Video recording can be battery intensive. While the HUAWEI Mate30 Pro 5G houses a 4500mAh and 4200mAh battery respectively, it doesn’t hurt to bring along a power bank to ensure your device stays powered during and after the shoot. Now that you’re set and ready to shoot with your HUAWEI Mate30 Pro 5G device, open the Camera app and swipe left on the slider below until you hit More. In the menu, pick Time-lapse, then frame your shot and start recording. If you want a bit more control over the frame interval, tap Auto to bring up the options. The second icon to your left lets you choose the speed; for the holy grail, we suggest four- to five-second intervals, which produces footage that speeds up real time by 120x or 150x. Huawei has also included some frame interval suggestions for other types of time-lapses, as seen on the Camera UI. For example, 0.5s and 1s intervals are ideal for cars and moving crowds, and 20s and 30s intervals are great for stars at night. ✤
