Creativity Celebrated

The most seductive thing about art is the personality of the artist himself. - Paul Cezanne

W

ith all that’s going on in the world, isn’t it lovely to have a place amidst all the noise to call home? Right in the centre of the globe, the Gulf has become a sanctuary for many expats and travellers with the UAE being known for its warm hospitality and, most of all, its celebration and support of the arts community. This month’s beautiful cover image comes courtesy of DCT Abu Dhabi and belongs to the super talented Abir Tbbara. It’s just one of the few wonderful works that is part of a wider community arts exhibition in Al Qattara Arts Centre, currently on display throughout summer. Why is it so important to give local and UAE-based artists a platform to share their work? In my opinion, the freedom of creativity and expression through art is one of the most healing and cathartic experiences - whether you’re the artist or the viewer - there is something about colours, textures, and concepts that make people think deeply, have conversations with strangers and create opportunities for cool collaborations and new friendships. And who doesn’t want more of this positivity around them? I sure do. Turn to p29 and marvel some of the great pieces on show before you plan a visit and check them out in person. For many, the summer is a time to escape to more satisfying climates, so this month’s Globetrotter comes straight from Madrid (p43) whilst those who want to keep things local should consider the simply stunning Rennaisance Downtown Hotel, Dubai (p49) or the well-located Address Dubai Marina (p55) for a staycation that is total goals. We also highlight what could potentially be the Eid Getaway from heaven - a stay at The Residence Zanzibar (p67) - the choice is all yours. Dining goes full-on 5-star this month with our food features highlighting designer dreams at Bvlgari Resort Dubai Yacht Club (p87), artistic modern-Indian cuisine at Mint Leaf of London (p91) and cool, contemporary food at Belong (p95). You’ll also find a host of new activities, summer camp fun, dining deals, and experiences to tick off the list before the back-to-school rush begins. Who says that August has to be the month of the summer slump? Not here. As long as you’ve got your copy of FACT, there’s something new to do every day!☺

Exhibition Celebrates The Year of Zayed

IN TRIBUTE TO THE Year of Zayed, One&Only Royal Mirage has launched an exhibition of archived photographs documenting key moments in the life of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Offering rarely-seen glimpses into his visionary leadership, from environmental conservation to forming Dubai’s development plan, it tells the story of His Highness as the driving force behind the formation of the United Arab Emirates. As 2018 marks 100 years since the birth of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, One&Only Royal Mirage has carefully selected a series of 69 images depicting the ruler and Father of the Nation. Curated around themes based on visionary quotes from His Highness, highlights of the exhibit include memorable moments he shared with world leaders, from the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum to Queen Elizabeth II, and a shot of His Highness watering a date palm taken in 1981, a reminder of his passion for protecting the environment. The exhibition is on display at the Grand Gallery located at the Arabian Court, One&Only Royal Mirage. Running until the end of the year, entrance is complimentary for both One&Only Royal Mirage guests and visitors. ✤

IT’S ABOUT TO BE A BUN FIGHT! Get ready for a KO with a brand-new burger concept now open on Jumeirah Beach Road. LET’S GET READY TO rumble! It’s the most anticipated showdown of the year, as Bun Fight Burger Bar & Delivery is now open for diners to delve in. Set to be Dubai’s new burger hotspot, Bun Fight is a fresh and energetic addition to the evolving food scene in the city. Exclusively open for dinein two nights a week, fight fans can secure a front row seat on Thursdays and Fridays, but, fear not, it’s open for delivery from noon to 3am daily. The main event of Bun Fight is Surf ‘n’ Turf, which is a champion combination of seafood and meat and the menu offers an array of options for both. Whether it’s Turf or Surf you prefer between your buns, this menu is set to shake up the traditional Dubai burger scene, introducing the art of double dipping, milkshakes and coffee, as well as the never before seen Dessurger; a dessert burger. The menu will have you hooked as Bun Fight brings new concepts to the ring of heavyweight burgers, including the fondue dip ‘n’ flip; a 6oz Black Angus patty topped with slow roasted beef, melted raclette cheese goo with a French beef gravy dip. Surfing into the opposing corner is the ultimate lobster roll, served with quail’s egg, Béarnaise sauce and a potato roll. The middleweight battle falls between the French dip burger, a 4oz Black Angus patty, Montgomery cheddar cheese with French beef dipping gravy. However, this burger can easily move up a weight category and fight with the big boys by 10

doubling the patty. Bun Fight’s Mr Shrimpy is not for the faint hearted, for those who can handle the heat, take down the crispy Gulf shrimps, wasabi mayo, angel hair noodle salad, hot as hell mango salsa, all served in a soft potato roll. The light-weights can try the bun-less option; Pretzel coated halloumi fries, greens, pickled veggies and maple mustard dressing. Sun’s out, bun’s out! Four types of buns are up for grabs; sub rolls, ciabatta, honey and rolled oats or brioche; taste buds will never get bored with a bun for any day of the week. For the sweet toothed, take a jab at the Dessurger, a caramelized brioche bun with a vanilla parfait patty, lemon curd (mustard), strawberry compote (ketchup), whipped Chantilly cream (mayo). Each ingredient emulating the elements of a savoury burger. This one promises to pack a punch! Classic milkshakes include vanilla frozen custard, rocky road milk chocolate and a strawberry meringue flurry. Alternatively, try the homemade super shakes; Lotus biscuit and caramel ice cream shake, topped with French toast brioche bun. The cereal ice cream shake served with a royal iced sticky bun or the Bun’tella shake; toasted hazelnut and dark chocolate with a Nutella soaked brioche bun. Mmmmh! ✤

WOK THIS WAY! PAYING HOMAGE TO THE UAE, Wok Boyz has commissioned a mural, welcoming patrons with an awe-inspiring piece of art just outside its threshold. Designed by renowned graffiti artist Berkem Seçgin, the mural fuses Asian influences with imagery of key locations from around the UAE, creating a landmark for visitors and residents alike. The wall represents the three founders’ undying love for the UAE, which is clearly emblazoned by the elements included in the revolutionary mural. Iconic UAE attractions and sights feature on the mural, including the Burj Al Arab, the Aldar Building in Abu Dhabi and the ‘win, victory and love’ sign. immortalised by His Highness Sheikh Muhammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Elements from the mural are offset by relics of Asian and urban culture, featuring chopsticks, a street dancer and a boom box. The wall-art, much like the brand, seamlessly fuse two bold cultures and marries street art with street food to make a daring, urban statement. Its revolutionary design has made it a tourist attraction for the thousands of visitors flocking to Sheikh Zayed Road. The mural makes a nod to the future of Dubai’s legacy as well by featuring a completed version of the Dubai Eye. This piece of art forms part of the Wok Boyz narrative, as a Dubai-based food success story, in the food capital of the world! ✤

xploring a wide range of mediums and artistic expressions, the exhibition displays the creative abilities of all aspiring and emerging artists based in the UAE and the region. Showcasing the wealth of national artistic talent, the summer exhibition will also highlight the nuances of each different artist as they capture their perceptions of community, society and the world. The exhibition features 28 works by 23 artists, including well-known Abu Dhabi-based artist Sadie Sulaiman (whose work is our cover image this month), Indian artist Sheena M. M, Filipino visual and conceptual artist Charlie Villagracia, Dubai-based visual artist Noumier Tawilah, and famous Emirati caricaturist and cartoonist Khaled Al Jaberi, who is known for his social and political cartoons in local Arabic newspapers and his children’s book Youmeyat Moshagheb. Malaysian artist Sadie Sulaiman is a self-taught artist who discovered her passion and talent for painting after she moved from her home country to Abu Dhabi in 2007. Her experiments with acrylic, oil, pencil and mixed media have produced a large collection of original paintings, where she gains her inspiration and ideas from critical observations of her natural surroundings, her travels across the globe, everyday life, dreams and Quranic verses. Originally from the Indian state of Kerala, a city known for its affiliation with art and culture, Sheena M. M currently resides and works in the UAE with her work revolving around depicting tranquility in nature, as well as love and affection in human relationships. She finds her inspiration from her surroundings, and excels in presenting different facets of life in a surrealist approach using oil colours on canvas and sculpture.

With fighting tournaments being his only ticket to freedom, he embarks on a non-stop, action packed journey from one savage fight to next in order to finally regain the life he lost.

DIRECTOR: Jean-Stephane Sauvaire CAST: Joe Cole, Nicolas Shake, Somluck Kamsing

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

While keeping the sordid details of Moore’s past including his heroin addiction and 15 years spent in different prisons to a bare minimum, the film focuses on his life inside the nightmarish lock up. When a young English boxer is incarcerated in two notorious Thai prisons, he realises that taking part in Muay Thai boxing tournaments might be his only way out. Stopping at nothing, he moves from competition to competition to do whatever it takes to preserve his life and win back his independence. ubai isn’t exactly short of hotel options with nearly every major hospitality brand already present and some newer boutique choices popping up almost every month. It can be hard to impress customers as we’re simply so spoilt with quality. We had high expectations when we arrived at Renaissance Downtown, and let’s just say that it didn’t disappoint. FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT Entering the lobby of the hotel, you’ll be greeted by a super chic space with art installations and modern décor. The hotel’s design is inspired by the fluidity of Dubai’s iconic sand dunes, with tones of black and gold present throughout the public spaces and guestrooms. The fit out is different to any other hotel in the city, there are impressive lighting features, exposed ironwork beams, floorto-ceiling golden chains and an industrial feel in parts. A lot of time and thought has gone into the design of this property. It’s very warm and relaxed and you can feel this from the moment you enter the hotel. Staff are super professional, yet laid back and chatty. There is no pomposity here. FUNKY MEETS ELEGANCE The 298-room property in located on the cusp of fact magazine

Business Bay, just a 10-minute walk from the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, and a quick drive to DIFC. The concierge is replaced by a navigator who can suggest hidden places to explore which is an excellent unique selling point of the hotel as its essentially a business hotel but they want to offer customers exciting things to do once their work day is done as well as provide leisure visitors with added value. Our check in is quick and friendly and we’re shown to our room on the 20th floor which has breath-taking views of downtown and the Burj Khalifa. Other rooms have views of the Dubai Canal which is equally lovely. Each of the guest rooms and suites come with floor-toceiling windows, allowing natural light to flow through and makes said views even better. Again, the rooms are not like other hotels we’ve stayed in, they are spacious, funky but elegant with rich fabrics and beige accents. Besides the large and super comfy bed, there is a beautifully low-hanging copper pendant light which sets off the room along with Pablo Picasso’s famed camel sketch which has cleverly been reimagined and takes centre stage as a 3D iron sculpture above the bed. Super modern with a touch of Dubai. We love it. FOOD FOR DAYS As we love our food here at FACT, we enjoyed all the culinary delights that this hotel has to offer and certainly tried some of the most amazing dining options in the city. The gorgeous French farmhouse inspired restaurant Bleu Blanc and urban Italian themed BASTA! Are both concepts by Chef David 52

Myers, and have already become incredibly popular. Bleu Blanc is achingly beautiful and the food is simple and chic. BASTA! is the perfect spot for modern Italian and has a fun and buzzing atmosphere. The hotel also has BHAR, from the Arabic word for spice, which offers Middle Eastern cuisine with a twist. The breakfasts here are excellent with a large range of cuisines on offer and daily made-to-order egg specials and freshly made juices. Morimoto, Japanese celebrity chef Masaharu Morimoto’s 250-seat stunning restaurant is the real wow factor which has four outdoor terraces and a seriously cool bar serving up delicious cocktails all based on the Zodiacs of the Chinese Calendar. AWARD-WINNING WELLNESS If you do anything while staying here, take a trip to the Six Senses Spa at the hotel. The Six Senses Spa features six treatment suites and each is dedicated to a different sense, offering the perfect balance of calm and sensory experiences. The serene entrance features low lighting and timber décor then heads into the reception of the spa with lots of natural light and contemporary design enhanced by huge windows. The spa features a variety of holistic therapies, wellness activities and experiences such as hammam and sauna. We’d recommend one of the massages in the “TOUCH” therapy room which includes a pre treatment of the floatation pod (filled with 400kg of Epsom Salts) to really get you feeling relaxed for your massage. There is also a nail bar that provides complete hand and foot pampering and a yoga platform. Is there anything they didn’t think of? Renaissance Downtown Hotel, Dubai is a unique property that has everything from cool, insta-worthy accommodation to brag-about food options and a spa that will leave you relaxed for days. We particularly loved the service of the staff and the modern ambience of the hotel. The brand has exclusive experiences and outlets which will make it a stay to remember. We’re already reminiscing! ✤ fact magazine

HOTEL HOTSPOT •

A BRAND WE LOVE

Dubai Marina is a popular spot and it’s not hard to see why. Surrounded by striking skyscrapers, the marina gives a relaxed feel in a buzzing cosmopolitan city. Staying at The Address Dubai Marina is the ideal choice in this area as this sophisticated hotel is an easy walk to shops, restaurants, bars and the beach. The Address hotel brand needs no introduction in Dubai and we’re huge fans of it here at FACT for it boasts professional service and elegant décor. You know when you’re staying at an Address hotel – there’s a high level of sophistication aligned with the brand and there’s always beautiful floral decorations in the foyer as well as top-notch friendly service. The hotel has a fantastic position overlooking the chic marina and direct access through the lobby to Dubai Marina Mall (perfect in the summer months and oh-so convenient for shopaholics). It’s also a five-minute walk to Pier 7, which offers up some great dining venues, and it’s a mere 10 minutes to the beach at JBR.

GRAND LIVING

We arrive at the hotel and are swiftly taken to the reception to check-in. The lobby is large and very slick. Although the hotel is busy, check-in is smooth and we’re in our room in under five minutes with bags arriving five minutes later. The 200-room hotel blends a mixture of classic and modern with lots of dark timber and cream along with neutral touches and stunning views over the marina. We’re staying in a Grand Room with a marina view that has an entirely separate living area and large floorto-ceiling windows. The bathroom is spacious and impressive, done in white marble with a large bathtub overlooking the hotel pool and marina. The beds are unbelievably comfortable with beautiful linens – you’ll be guaranteed a fantastic night’s sleep. The hotel has many tech features and all rooms include an iPod dock and iPad to control everything from lighting and temperature to ordering room service and clothes pressing. There is also a large desk for business travellers and a Nespresso machine along with TWG teas for when you need a break. fact magazine

WELLNESS WONDER

If you’re in need of a fabulous spa treatment or a workout during your stay, then you’re in luck as the third floor of the hotel is dedicated to wellness with The Address Spa alongside a large gym as well as steam rooms, sauna facilities and hair salons. We try the Healing Experience which is a 90-minute treatment including an hour-long facial and 30-minute back massage - just what the doctor ordered. We recommend arriving at the spa in plenty of time as the facilities are lovely and you may want a sauna or steam to fully relax before the experience. This treatment is Ayurvedic and blends therapeutic aromatic herbs to calm and comfort you. The session begins with a foot scrub followed by the 30-minute back massage which really relaxes us in a matter of minutes. It’s then time for the facial, which is aimed to rejuvenate skin in the hot weather and searing temps outside. It’s basically a good deep cleanse facial that leaves you glowing and calms the skin. Our therapist was wonderful and we left totally stress-free with a hydrated and glowing complexion. Be sure to spend some time in the tranquil relaxation room with herbal teas and lots of fruits.

FOOD COMES FIRST

If you’re feeling peckish, the all-day dining restaurant Mazina has an excellent breakfast buffet fit for royalty with a wide selection of pastries, cereals, fruits, cheese, cold meats and hot items including scrambled eggs and bacon, omelettes, pancakes and waffles. If Al Fresco is your thing then a trip to Shades is a must (after the summer heat maybe). Beside the pool, Shades serves delicious bites such as salads, sandwiches, Arabic mezze, pizza and pasta and then later in the evening becomes a buzz with chilled tunes from the DJ and after-dinner drinks and shisha. There’s also a sports bar and busy lobby café that are both worth a visit. This beautiful hotel is perfect for both business or pleasure and you’ll find yourself a return guest thanks to their professional hospitality and huge dining and recreation offerings. ✤

aadiyat Island is arguably the jewel in the crown of our fair city and it’s amazing how a quick drive out of the centre leads to this stunning island which feels like you’re a world away from the busy streets of inner city life. The island has also become the cultural heart of Abu Dhabi with The Louvre now open and plans for more museums including the Guggenheim. But there is one main attraction on the island that’s always been there and keeps people coming back for more, of course, we’re talking about the pristine white sand beach sitting right in front of The. St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. The hotel is what you would expect from a St Regis - elegant, eternal and super luxurious. It has an impressive resort feel that continues to wow you even when you’ve visited time and time again. The hotel has 377 tastefully designed rooms and suites, overlooking either the beautiful beach or the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club. We’re staying in a superior sea view room on the top floor and it’s super spacious and classy. There is a small separate hallway, huge white marble bathroom with completely separate his and her sink areas, a giant rain shower and freestanding bath with a sea view. The hotel also has its own branded bath and shower products and the big fluffy robes will have you feeling comfy in no time. It also has a large balcony overlooking Saadiyat Beach perfect for taking in those gorgeous sunsets. The hotel also boasts a beautiful spa, named Iridium. We’re are booked in for one of the signature treatments - The Asian Spell Massage. As soon as you step into the venue you will feel tranquil and relaxed. The sound of water falling puts us in a zen mood almost instantly. We’re ushered to the changing rooms and would be happy to just spend the afternoon here with a sauna, steam room and whirlpool at our disposal. The changing rooms are truly lovely with art deco style and large black chandeliers that are totally Instagrammable. fact magazine

Be sure to bring your bathers so that you can enjoy these facilities as they are super lush and will get you in the right frame of mind for your spa treatment. The whirlpool is a must. We’re shown to the treatment room where we start with a foot ritual and then lay down on the massage table. The 90-minute massage aims to unlock deep-seated tension and knots. It’s essentially a deep tissue massage but uses gentle rocking techniques to loosen muscles. It’s designed to help the body eliminate toxins, tone the skin and revitalise the mind. The massage is relaxing in parts and then intense to really help detoxify the body. We would highly recommend this treatment for when you need time out to pamper yourself. After all this soothing you’ll only want to chill out further in the Relaxation Room with dates, dried apricots, fresh labneh and some magazines. There are many restaurants in the hotel including Olea, 55&5th The Grill, Sontaya, The Drawing Room, and Manhattan Lounge, and the newl- opened Buddha-Bar Beach, so you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to culinary options. The resort also has five swimming pools, including a 25-metre indoor lap pool within the St. Regis Athletic Club alongside the Sandcastle Club with indoor and outdoor activities for children and direct access to its own private beach. In a few words: we never wanted to leave, and you won’t too! ✤

Private pier at the Residence Zanzibar

Set in a lush tropical garden, our villa featured a large living room leading out to a private pool and cosy deck area. The room houses a very comfortable emperor bed and the bathroom has a gorgeous French bathtub and a beautiful back deck with an outdoor shower too. Honestly, this place is the perfect setting to spread out and cool off. At night you can pull the curtains and leave your window open to hear the sound of the waves and the soft chirp of tree frogs that ubiquitously appear after dark. With nature all around, you can close your eyes and feel like you’re starring in your very own castaway movie – albeit, with all the comforts of a luxury resort! It’s difficult to pin point the element we loved the most about this incredible resort. Maybe it was the stunning infinity pool which at its far end had a glass wall creating the infinity edge illusion, allowing beachcombers to peek into the underwater action. Or maybe it was the resort’s private pier which was the ideal spot to witness the daily sunset, or perhaps the private dinner on the beach with live entertainment? In reality, it was all of these things and countless more. The Residence is also a place that ensured we never went hungry, with two world-class restaurants to get our food fix. Breakfast each day was a feast but our gastronomic highlight was its international restaurant, The Dining Room, where we celebrated our last night and had a delicious grilled lobster ith a twist of local spice, absolutely delicious!

Stone Town Old Balcony

CULTURAL HERITAGE As part of our top five things to see, Stone Town is a must-visit area where you can easily spend a day through bustling market and street food vendors. Here, the best way to get around is with a private guide where you will also visit the House of Wonders, the Slave Market, the Sultan’s Palace Museum and the Old Arab Fort. Although it is a crying shame not more has been done to preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city has still a charm that you’ll find in very few places on earth. Stone Town is a capital city with the character of Havana, and over centuries different cultures have influenced Zanzibar to become what it is today. Phoenicians, Persians, Indians, Portuguese, Omani Arabs and the British to name but a few have settled here at one time or another and added to the already vibrant local culture, creating a unique blend of Arabic, European, and African architecture and traditions. One of the best ways to observe this unique kaleidoscope of cultural heritage is from one of the rooftop terrace restaurants with unreal views of the city whilst eating authentic local food. Our highlight was the Emerson on Hurumzi which had a great atmosphere and from where it’s possible to see a Hindu temple, churches and mosques standing side by side and declaring their fraternity at prayer time!

The tour also includes a fantastic seafood buffet comprising grilled calamari, grilled fish, slipper lobster and chicken. Our adventure highlight was the walk onto an island’s tropical forest where you can find an impressive giant 500-year-old baobab tree that 70 years ago was bowled down by a storm. You can even climb up it and get a great view from the top! It really was breathtaking. BUCKET LIST DESTINATION Visiting Zanzibar feeds your soul as you manage to break the routine of our modern, tech-driven lifestyles. You will reconnect with the nature, culture, people and history. HYBRID STYLE The game-changing Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 is the crossover of laptops that any tech fiend on-the-go needs in their life…

F

rom endless Netflix sessions to keeping up with work deadlines, our trusty laptops have become one of the most important gadgets in our lives. Whether you’re looking for a simple budget PC, a gaming machine or a productivity powerhouse, finding the perfect laptop for your needs can be tricky. Making your selection process a little bit easier, we decided to take the new Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 for a spin. Setting a new bar for hybrid laptops, Dell has completely reinvented the Dell XPS 15 into a sleek 2-in-1 laptop. Perfect for people who need power and portability, the laptop offers build quality, great attention to detail as well as flexibility for a truly highend experience. Decked up in a similar design as its predecessors, the laptop offers one of the most comfortable palm rests ever along with some really excellent build quality. While the Dell XPS 2-in-1 isn’t quite a lightweight, the 360-degree hinge allows you to use the XPS in an easel or movie-watching mode. But what impressed us the most is the device’s selection of ports and the brand-new keyboard maglev technology. The maglev keyboard is more rigid and requires a firmer press but it is still very enjoyable to type on. When it comes to performance, the new Intel-meets-

AMD processor is a force to be reckoned with. Achieving better CineBench and GeekBench scores than any of its rivals, the laptop possesses an impressive new sensor hub that helps liberally boost frequencies. The sensor hub works along with the software to help monitor the device’s cooling and power for an automatic performance boost. No more overheating! The screen on the laptop measures 15.6 inches with thin bezels and supports Dell’s included stylus. It offers gorgeous bright colours with tons of pop and contrast without a lot of image sharpening. While the included pen has 4,096 levels of pressure as well as good weighing and draws with precision. If a good battery life is what you’re after, the Dell XPS 2-in-1 may not be a good option. While Dell claims the laptop can last up to 15 hours, the XPS 2-in1 definitely runs on the shorter side of the available battery life. The ‘smallest and thinnest 2-in-1 device of its size’, the laptop manages to get most things right. One of the most innovatively engineered and powerful laptops in the market right now, the Dell XPS 2-in-1 definitely deserves your attention. We won’t be putting it down anytime soon! ✤ fact magazine

DESIGNER DINING

When it comes to haute-couture hotels you can usually expect haute cuisine, yet this is not the case with Bulgari’s five food and beverage offerings. Our destination for this visit is the Bvlgari Resort Dubai Yacht Club, a nautical themed restaurant strictly focusing on Mediterranean cuisine with a heavy Italian influence, paying homage to the luxury brand’s heritage. FACT’s David Tapley explores… fact magazine

T

he UAE has no shortage of fashionbranded hotels, with the likes of Armani and Palazzo Versace dominating the hospitality scene. Attempting to insatiate the region’s appetite for all things luxury comes the arrival of the Bvlgari Resort Dubai, taking things up a notch having been built on its own private offshore island shaped like a seahorse. The Yacht Club stands somewhat apart from the hotel building, separated by the Bvlgari Residences and a sweeping marina home to a number of super-yachts – it’s the epitome of OTT. Stepping across the Bvlgari branded carpets and into the restaurant space, the similarities to Cipriani (another popular fine-dining Italian spot) are unmistakable. Interiors are panelled in wood in a similar fashion to the deck of a ship, with the metaphorical bow replaced by a well-stocked bar. Vintage photographs and staff dressed in a hybrid of white tuxedos and sailor uniforms complement the maritime theme. As pleasing as the interiors are on the eye, we can’t resist the charms of the outdoor deck, overlooking the water, the vessel-shaped hotel and punctuated by the glimmering spire of the Burj Khalifa on the horizon. Atmospherics aside, the food during the course of our lunch was consistently strong. With little room for reinvention, the Yacht Club menu represents a selection of Italian classics done remarkably well, under the guidance of charismatic Chef De Cuisine, Andrea Calducci. The Yacht Club’s take on an old fashioned utilised Campari rather than whisky makes a strong first impression, served in a sliver cup and adorned with the Bvlgari logo burnt into a slice of orange peel (it’s the small details that count). We order the Burrata Pugliese, served with crushed tomato, basil and Taggiasca olives to complement the generous portion of creamy Italian cheese. Similarly, the Tartare Di Tonno Pinna Gialla presents a beautifully plated tuna tartare with quails egg and pink grapefruit that delivered on taste and left us wanting to take the Bvlgari crockery home (spoiler alert — we didn’t). It was actually a dish that was recommended for us that came up trumps. The Fritto Misto Di Mare arrived upon the insistence of our waiter and we thoroughly enjoyed the lightly battered mix of squid, shrimp and vegetables – an indicator of how this dish should be executed. Definitely the most impressive fritto misto we’ve had in a while and the same can be said for the tartare. We’re offered tasting portions of two pasta dishes, of which the al dente Linguine Al Limone

is our preferred choice. A lemon linguine with clams and Sardinian bottarga (salted fish roe) provides a beautiful taste of the sea perfectly matched by our surroundings. The unique Maltagliati Al Ragu plates olives, red mullet ragout and maltagliati paste but fails to leave as much of an impression as the linguine. Instinct draws us towards the seared octopus for our main course, but once again we’re swayed by our waiter’s insistence on the Salt Crusted Catch Of The Day. The salted crust is efficiently removed at the table and works as a means of keeping the flavour locked in and adding an intensity during the cooking process. The fish is expertly filleted and presented with a simple lemon butter sauce, potatoes, tomatoes and broccoli. Much like the aforementioned fritto misto, the fish capsizes our expectations into something we would certainly order again. Five desserts are offered and despite the Italian influence there is not a tiramisu in sight - thankfully. Instead, we enjoy the Baba Classico, a yeast cake saturated in Limoncello syrup, marmalade and served with Chantilly cream. The baba is denser than we would’ve liked and we struggle to finish the portion. However, the Carpaccio Di Ananas has the table talking and marks a lighter way to end the meal. Pineapple carpaccio marinated with vanilla and basil and served with lemon sorbet. Dining at Bvlgari, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect but we found the pricing to be sensible (considering the brand) and the service to be in the upper echelon of Dubai hospitality. Matching these factors with impressive food, of which many ingredients are locally sourced, and the Yacht Club makes for a pleasant treat when you want one. ✤

CULINARY ARTISTRY

Located on the 15th floor of the South Tower of DIFC’s Emirates Financial Towers, Mint Leaf of London is quite the find with one of the best views of the Burj Khalifa awaiting guests through its floor-to-ceiling windows. he decor at Mint Leaf is restrained, opting for a classy space that feels part fine dining and part upmarket nightclub, with only the slightest hints of the Indian subcontinent evident in the form of henna-inspired carvings that envelop the dining room. Mint Leaf’s seamless transition between lounge, bar and restaurant is immediately appealing with a nice separation between the three distinct areas. Think swing seats in the bar and a central glass kitchen illuminated by stage lights in the dining room, while the semi-circular design offers spectacular views from wherever you may be seated. With Dubai renowned for its plethora of Indian dining options and a trend for molecular gastronomy gaining momentum within the cuisine, Mint Leaf and Executive Chef Pradeep Khullar have wisely stuck with a fine-dining approach, offering authentic North Indian dishes packed full of bold flavours Many Dubai diners will recognise Chef Khullar from his stint at Jodhpur Royal Dining and it’s pleasing to see he brings his charisma and innovative cooking techniques to Mint Leaf. All meals begin with the complimentary amuse-bouche of Wasabi Poori which acts as a daring precursor to the meal and may, in fact, be our favourite dish. An alternative take on the traditional Indian street food snack pani puri, the puri is filled with wasabi flavoured yoghurt, green peas and pomegranate. Consumed in one go, the thick mixture offers a slight burst of wasabi to open up the taste buds before the Indian culinary journey begins. Khullar’s lemon prawns with saffron aioli offer the ideal showcase for the food at Mint Leaf. Subtle hints of lemon are used to accentuate the delicate flavours of the shellfish without overpowering, allowing the focal ingredient to remain the star of this particular show. Next to arrive, the lamb adana kabab with rosemary and coriander, prepared on skewers and cooked upon the open flame packs an unexpected punch and a nice char from the tandoor. Expectations are subverted during our meal at Mint Leaf and while not exactly fusion; the idea of playing on expectations is somewhat profound. What appear to be tacos transpire to be pulled chicken within handmade phulka roti breads. 92

Affectionately named the Desi taco, the texture of the meat works alongside the roti and makes for an ambitious dish. This idea comes to play later in the meal with the charcoal cornettos taking on the appearance of savory ice cream cones, where the dairy has been replaced with a startling minced lamb which boasts so much flavour that the squid ink cones almost feel like an afterthought. If you’ve dined with Khullar before, you’ll likely remember palate cleansers displayed in miniature pressure cookers.

ON THE MENU •

Here the idea remains - albeit without the gimmicky presentation - in the form of Mango, Lychee and Basil Chuski. These ice-lollies are a masterful blend of fruity tastes that work as a way to cleanse the palate in preparation for the main course. The Masala chicken and passionfruit curry does an admirable job of mixing the notions of sweet and savoury, while the seared black cod takes one of Dubai’s most popular dishes made famous by the likes of Zuma and Nobu and completely flips it. You might expect the bold Indian flavours to overpower the cod, but this is not the case and the use of garlic, lemon and ginger over the expected sweet miso is a welcomed relief. We were also pleased to note that Khullar’s Dal Makhani (a contender for the best in Dubai) is also available Mint Leaf’s dessert menu is more eclectic that the usual rasmalai and gulab jamun. The Lotus Mess takes the traditional British dessert of Eaton Mess and removes the cream and strawberries, replacing them with lotus ice cream, warm lotus caramel, lotus biscuits and berries (can you ever have enough Lotus?) The PB&C is a dessert we would highly recommend, a take on the snickers chocolate bar, presenting a caramel ice cream glazed in valrhona ganache and topped with peanut nougat. The carrot cake plays up the Indian spices with a heavy dose of cardamom, and shows Mint Leaf to be about more than just Indian cuisine, drawing culinary inspiration from all over the globe. With attentive service, confident flavours and a unique selection of cocktails, Mint Leaf may be

‘older’ on the Dubai dining scene, but it’s a restaurant that shouldn’t be overlooked. We would certainly return again for the food but also the bar. Sipping on a Peach Julep (served in a copper cup encrusted with ice) or a Golden Lady (mixing elderflower and gold dust into one mesmerising concoction) while watching the illuminations upon the world’s tallest building is certainly a memorable way to spend an evening in Dubai. ✤

WE BELONG TOGETHER

Did someone say food and design in the same sentence? In the last year, the Dubai Design District (d3) neighborhood has burgeoned into something quite remarkable with small boutiques, licensed restaurants, a nightclub (Base Dubai) and a number of quirky cafes now thriving in the once desolate area. FACT’s David Tapley took a seat at Belong, a retro restaurant-cum-bar-cum-lounge, for a feast blending colour and culinary together… fact magazine

B

elong is the latest licensed venture to open in d3 and occupies a small unit in building 8 close to current Japanese street-food hot spot Akiba Dori. It’s important to note that despite a less obvious entrance than its popular neighbour, Belong is an altogether different beast and one that blends bar, lounge and restaurant with great success. Entering into the bright and colourful interiors there’s a real sense of place (or belonging if you will) that offers a direct correlation to the vibrancy of the food. A large retro-style mural painted by a Dubai-based Iranian artist adorns the left wall of the galley-like restaurant, bringing personality to a narrow space which would otherwise suffer due to the difficult layout. Towards the rear, Belong opens out into a more casual setting with comfortable sofas scattered with flamboyant cushions, and walls emblazoned with poetry and imaginative quotes that read: “I dream of you in colours that don’t exist.” This back room which can be closed off for exclusivity, also features the bar (serving up a small selection of expertly crafted cocktails) and a DJ booth. Described as “a meeting point for old and new, east and west, traditional and innovative – a place where everyone belongs.” It’s refreshing to see the concept executed across all elements of the venue and the first thing we notice is the succinct menu offering up a handful of dishes with the intention of keeping the focus firmly on quality over quantity. This pays dividends for Belong and we thoroughly enjoy the baby squid with harissa dip, taking Mediterranean seafood and bringing a nice Arabic slant via the inclusion of Moroccan harissa. The dish is the epitome of simplicity but is executed

well, with the squid beautifully prepared in a golden batter, well seasoned and not too thick. Similarly, the ricotart is quite the find, falling somewhere between a pizza and flatbread and featuring a generous serving of ricotta and parmesan cheeses piled on top of a puff pastry base. Perhaps not the easiest dish to eat, but the blend of texture and flavour certainly pays off. Even a simple halloumi salad plays to the strengths of the produce, with large cubes of grilled halloumi mixed alongside pomegranate seeds, zereshk berries and arugula leaves, resulting in a vibrant plate of fresh tastes. The pulled lamb sliders would certainly be our recommendation should you ever find yourself visiting Belong. Soft rustic buns jam packed with home-made pickles, a tahini and lemon sauce and tender lamb shoulder. Again bring a Middle Eastern element via a shawarma spice

marination culminating in a sweet taste similar to a bbq sauce that left us wanting just one more… With only five main courses on the menu, we select lamb from the choices of ribeye, baby chicken, hammour and salmon. The lamb chops again show exemplary care and preparation for the meat which provides a pleasing smoky char while still keeping tender. A za’atar chimichurri accompanies the four chops and makes for an interesting choice combining another Arabic touch with the traditionally South American dipping sauce. Six intriguing desserts seem to push the fusion-like concept that bit further with an

osmalieh creme brulee looking the part, topped with osmalieh pastry akin to some kind of sweet bird’s nest. The interplay between textures is certainly interesting through we did expect the brulee itself to be somewhat firmer. The chocolate halwa fondant is delightful, with the cake offering impressive ooze, made all the more exciting via the melted halwa inside. Aware of the richness of such a dish, a cherry sorbet is wisely included to cut through both the sweetness and the heavy nature of the dish. Of all the desserts, the French toast soufflé impresses the most. Accompanied by a salted caramel sauce unafraid to play up the salty element and a date marmalade (it may sound bizarre but it works), the light soufflé topped with golden French toast pieces is as gluttonous and sweet as a dessert can get, but pays dividends for those looking to try something a little different. On the back wall red lettering traces then phrase “this is where you belong” and we’re quite inclined to agree. The layout may be a little haphazard but the petite nature of Belong adds charming appeal, projecting a good vibe. Our only disappointment comes from the fact that with such a concise menu, there are a large number of unavailable dishes on the day we dine, meaning options are limited further. Innovation and creativity are the driving forces behind the d3 district and Belong feels like the appropriate fit for the trendy setting. A place where “creators meet and makers eat” and in the words of MC, “we belong together!”. ✤ fact magazine

CITY INSIDER

Vipin Khattar General Manager, Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights Hotel & Residences

Tell us three things that make Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights Hotel & Residences stand out from its competitors... If I were to highlight what makes Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights Hotel & Residences stand out, it would have to be the magnificent building itself. Incredibly conceptualised, the architecture is a fabulous amalgamation of local influences with modern design, which captures the essence of Dubai, exuding a clever, energising and confident appeal. A second stand out feature of the hotel would be its mixed-use facility towers that offer a fantastic variety of meeting spaces, able to hold up to 19 breakout facilities enabled to host individual, corporate or private gatherings. And

98

lastly, a not-to-be-missed feature is La Tablita, our award-winning restaurant, offering the best authentic Mexican cuisine alongside traditional Mariachi and a full-fledge Mexican team! Share with us some of your favourite cultural hotspots in Dubai and why... A favourite cultural hotspot of mine in Dubai is Bastakiya. I enjoy taking my family out through “old Dubai and into narrow lanes of limestone buildings, wind towers and traditional handcrafts, which offer us a little window into Arabic culture, beliefs and lifestyle. At the same time, I also enjoy the modernity and spirit of the Dubai Design District; which oozes with creativity, out-of-thebox concepts and engaging pop-up activities.

What are some of your future professional goals with the hotel? A key goal with the hotel is to enhance our sustainability practices throughout all our operations. We already boast of a plastic-free gym and are working toward phasingout the use of plastic straws by September this year. Additionally, we are steadily migrating our food sources to be mostly from local, sustainable farming provenance; being acutely aware of the importance of responsible business and our role in defining the new global economy. Another area we are looking into enhancing is that of technological innovation, given the real-time, minute-to-minute personalisation is at the core of our business and of everything we do.
