Another One Bites the Dust

“Who’s the bane of Santa’s life? The elf and safety officer.” – Catherine Tate

I

t seems like only yesterday that I was writing this very monthly letter talking about how fast the year has gone and my goals for 2018. Time really does fly. I’m sure many of you find yourself thinking the same thing. And if, like me, you’re wondering exactly what you’ve done, achieved or experienced in the past year, here’s how to give yourself a little reminder. A colleague recently told me to look through my photo gallery on my phone and scroll up the last 12 months. Wow! There are things I did in 2018 that I’d completely forgotten about; scaled a mountain and zip-lined off it in Oman, finally made it to Azerbaijan, attended one month of back-to-back family weddings, and in a very unexpected turn of events, decided to take the adrenalin up a notch and do the world’s longest zip line in Ras Al Khaimah. No biggie! So while December can be a month of complete chaos, too many dinner parties, lots of brunches, and wild celebrations, make sure to take a few minutes to slow down and have a cheeky little scroll through your 2018 in photos - believe me when I say that you’ll find some real gems that will bring back all the memories. For those of you who like to dive straight into the holiday season, it’s time to amp up the excitement and plan your month ahead. We’ve got all kinds of festive treats picked out for you; from gingerbread house decorating to festive afternoon teas; delicious dinners and lavish brunches, you need to turn straight to p25 for the lowdown. Similarly, New Year’s Eve is set to be a full-on party right here in Dubai, with venues bringing their A-game for the year's biggest event. Think trendy parties, gala dinners, intimate soirees, DJ performances, and so much more to choose from, starting p44. There's all the travel inspo you need with our Globetrotter trips: check out everything you need to know about the very cool and creative Andaz hotel brand (p51) as well as a trule unforgettable Game of Thrones-inspired trip to Ireland (p58). We can't wait for the series to return in 2019 and this will get you hyped! I started with a winter playlist as early as mid-November - sorry not sorry. As Jingle Bells Rock - the Mean Girls’ version of course - plays in the background as I type, I can’t help but feel a big inner festive cheer coming on, for the incredible year we’ve had at FACT, and for the endless possibilities to come in 2019! Wishing you all a very merry festive season and happy new year!☺

MORE TO TASTE AT LE CIRQUE! Le Cirque Dubai, located in The Ritz Carlton, DIFC, adds a touch of fun to its fare with an ever-evolving menu focusing on homestyle favourites served with an elevated edge to enhance the art of dining out. THE LEGENDARY NEW YORK-BASED French-Italian restaurant brand, Le Cirque, will showcase its contemporary side in the Dubai outlet with three to four new curated dishes designed to be shared in addition to their regular menu favourites. Oreste Amadeo, Le Cirque Dubai’s General Manager, said: “With honest, homestyle cooking at the core of Le Cirque, we are taking a step back to remind guests of the dining out experience. In today’s world, we often get caught up in life’s day to day to do list, that we forget to take time to savor a good meal. “To highlight this, we are focusing on Le Cirque’s culture of feel-good food that brings people together through simple and familiar Italian flavours, but also adding a touch of French culinary artistry to showcase Le Cirque’s signature creative touch to dining, “ he added. “Le Cirque has history of bringing high fashion to the table and we are continuing to honor that legacy in the Dubai restaurant. After all, what would a circus be without being a bit ‘over the top’.” Le Cirque Dubai will continue to pay tribute to its founding father, famed restaurateur Sirio Maccioni, and serve the local foodie community French cuisine inspired by Italian influences. The restaurant’s modern artistic décor of pristine white, soft beiges and greys, geometric accessories and a hint of the restaurant’s signature red will appease the new-age Dubai 10

crowd of urban professionals, creatives, and socialites seeking an engaging and crafted environment to dine in. In addition to the new dishes, guests can still indulge in some regular classics such as Escargots made in garlic and herb butter, Lobster Risotto with salsa verde, and the popular Veal Milanese in parmesan, tomato, arugula, garlic and herb cream. “Every so often we’ll be adding a new-line up of select dishes and beverages to not only keep challenging ourselves, but also keep things fresh and interesting,” said Head Chef, Wesley Tyron Berghoff. “The rising level of competition in the F&B industry means customers are spoilt for choice, and at Le Cirque Dubai, they’ll never get bored of trying out some new dishes in addition to their regular favourites. The mantra we’re exercising is simplegenuine service, high quality good food, and good people.” What’s more? Don’t be fooled by the sophisticated dishes and porcelain white interiors, because this circus just got more entertaining with a range of acts in store, including Aperitivo, Brunch, and Guest Chefs - all part of the new Le Cirque Dubai. Stay tuned! ✤

CREATIVITY MEETS HERITAGE

OUR FIRST STOP AND INTRODUCTION TO THE ANDAZ BRAND IS A TRULY SPECIAL PLACE. THE HOSPITALITY GROUP’S FLAGSHIP PROPERTY IN THE ENGLISH CAPITAL; ANDAZ LONDON LIVERPOOL STREET, A VIBRANT HOTEL THAT EMBRACES ALL THAT EAST LONDON NEIGHBOURHOODS ARE KNOWN FOR, AND THEN SOME…

C

olourful, asymmetric-style clothing hangs from the ceilings and on the walls of the lobby at Andaz London Liverpool Street. It’s no coincidence that the internationally-acclaimed and sustainable fashion brand Vin + Omi has its latest collection adorned inside this Grade II listed building. After all, design is at the heart of this hotel, which holds on to the rich heritage of its past, dating back to the late 19th century when it was occupied by The Great Eastern Hotel, all the way up until now and the modern aesthetics of a more tech-savvy and creatively-driven lifestyle. This is what intrigued us straight away about Andaz – the brand is so much more than a place to sleep at night (although it does that well too, with some of the comfiest beds we’ve rested on in the city) – it’s a true representation of life in relation to its locality. In East London, the hotel preserves many elements of historical happenings 52

that have taken place in the area as well as incorporating features of the different cultures and communities within its vicinity. For example, the guest rooms are designed to capture the hotel’s heritage and reflect its unique location as the gateway point between the traditionally refined City and the dramatically changing and vibrantly creative Shoreditch. Its aesthetic is shaped by the unique identities of both these different areas. The hotel has 267 spacious and modern guest rooms including 15 suites. Designed in a residential style, the rooms embody the comfortable and welcoming ethos of the Andaz ‘home’, with wingedbacked chairs by Morgan, bespoke bijou walnut desks and super plush beds. Large photographers’ lamps by Artisan, reinforces the theme of playfulness and creates a warm atmosphere. There is a touch of the old-school industrial, railway-inspired furnishings with rooms being more understated, mood-lit and cosy, yet bold and whimsical too. The perfect juxtaposition for East London itself! Showing support and appreciation for its neighbourhood once more, Andaz London Liverpool Street also offers four 'Room With A View' guest rooms, each featuring an entirely unique design by a London street artist, allowing you to experience a space like no other in the capital. The attention to detail and chance for guests to immerse themselves in local culture is impeccable. One of our favourite spots in the hotel is a dining outlet that, for us, exudes everything that Andaz is about. Enter Rake’s, a café by day and bar by night, and let its casual yet sophisticated atmosphere take you away. This is the kind of place where you can meet for a business catch-up over great coffee or specially-crafted cocktails or gather with friends for a lively evening of wholesome, delicious food followed by a dance as the DJ spins the hottest tunes. From boss lady/man to party child… now, what’s more London than that? To top that off, the staff are attentive and well-informed on the menu, and they’re not shy about making good recommendations. The best, however, was yet to come when we were taken into what could quite possibly be London’s best kept secret. The hotel houses a truly fascinating Masonic Temple in the depths of the building. Concealed by heavy, studded doors and accessed via a winding staircase and a spacious mahogany-panelled anteroom, this is the City’s only original Freemason’s meeting lodge, built in 1912. Opulently furnished in 12 varieties of Grade II listed Italian marble, with Doric and Ionic columns, gilt fittings and a splendid zodiac ceiling, the temple was rediscovered only by chance during the hotel’s refurbishment. Surprises around every corner, that’s Andaz (and East London) for you!

ALICE IN AMSTERDAM

THE CITY OF BIKES, BOATS AND BRIDGES – AND LET’S NOT FORGET, CANALS – IS ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST ENERGETIC AND ADVENTUROUS CAPITALS TOO. TAKING ALL THAT AMSTERDAM STANDS FOR, ANDAZ AMSTERDAM PRINSENGRACHT HAS THE IMAGINATIVE TOUCH OF LOCAL AND LEGENDARY INTERIOR AND PRODUCT DESIGNER, MARCEL WANDERS. IT’S NO SURPRISE THEN THAT THIS HOTEL WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND OUR EXPECTATIONS…

A

s the first Hyatt hotel in the Netherlands, Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht had a lot to live up to. Under the creative helm of the iconic Dutch designer Marcel Wanders, Andaz had little to worry about and more to celebrate. Set on the site of the former Public Library on the Prinsengracht - part of the iconic ring of canals that was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010 – the hotel is centrally located in the bustling heart of the city – a location that seeps into every nook and cranny of the wondrous building and its daring concept. Surrounded by the creative scene and dynamic spirit of the Jordaan district as well as the adjacent Nine Streets, the hotel’s charming neighbourhood is filled with art galleries, boutique shops, trendy fashion stores and stylish restaurants, all of which nourish the city’s free-spirited, rich and diverse cultural character. It goes without saying that as far as hotels go, the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is the true heartbeat of its backdrop; the unique charisma of the capital city is embedded in the property’s adventurous design concept, reflecting a modern view of Dutch history and local culture. Take the hotel’s 117 guestrooms or one of its five suites. Due to the unique 1970s-style structure of the monumental former Public Library, Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht offers a total of 15 different room types. And, trust us when we say this, you’ve never seen anything like the accommodation you’ll find here. There’s an open plan layout which allows for maximum space and natural light, whether you’re facing the calm canals or the beautiful courtyard garden. Even the bathrooms feature an open structure (with closed shower and toilet) and include a multi-functional vanity centerpiece made from 150kg of concrete. It really is something – and you’ll want to instagram it right away. What we loved the most about the rooms is how each encapsulated different views and stories of Dutch history with small, and more noticeable, custom details – it was hard not to be inspired when staying here. Did you know that the world’s first established stock exchange dates back to 1602 in Amsterdam? Neither did we until we read a little story about it on one of the walls in our room! Other striking elements included the hand-painted washbasin in Marcel Wanders’ signature “One Minute Delft Blue” style, the oversized bookshaped work desk, and unique wallpaper featured both in the room and on the walls of the washroom. The specially-designed, comfortable reading chair, a full-length mirror, and a walk-in closet completed the comfortable accommodation. The social heart and soul of Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is located on the ground floor of the hotel, where the restaurant, bar,

lounge and library are seamlessly intertwined. Each space is distinct on its own, but together, they create a vibrant, exciting, and open area that is unique in its design concept. Facing the hotel’s landscaped garden, including the chef’s own herb garden, Bluespoon Restaurant showcases seasonal cuisine, serving uncomplicated European flavours with a Dutch Edge. Through active partnerships with farmers, producers and artisanal purveyors, only the very best local ingredients are used. The result is honest and authentic food, representative of its local origins. We would highly recommend booking in for the bespoke Chef’s Table experience – prepare for some of the best food you’ll ever taste. In the style of a typical Amsterdam café, the Bluespoon Bar exudes an intimate, speakeasy atmosphere surrounded by elegance, where professional bartenders serve hand-crafted cocktails from three different eras — pre-Prohibition, Prohibition, and post-Prohibition. The most enthralling aspect of all is the hotel’s incorporation of a unique video-art collection that represents a diversion from mainstream art. More than 40 unique works from various emerging and established local and international video artists, such as Ryan Gander, Erwin Olaf and Mark Titchner, make Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht the hotel with the largest video-art collection in the world. Depending on the work’s level of intensity and outspokenness, selections from the collection are showcased in different areas of the hotel: in the public areas of the ground floor, in the hallways throughout the various floors, or through a special video channel available on the televisions in the guestrooms. The largest display is located in the Lounge and is comprised of nine 60-inch televisions. If ever there was to be a playful remake of Alice in Wonderland, this is the kind of place she would choose to stay for all her wild and whimsical needs!

We’d already filled our boots with Irish pastries en route, y’see. Northern Ireland beckons fair maidens and fine knights to take a trip down the Kingsroad, through the country that houses more of the Seven Kingdoms than any other location in the world. Fans can get a real and first-hand feel for the forests, cliffs, castles and bays upon which their beloved characters have strode. The lush greens and azure waters of the

I

have flown with Turkish airlines a few times going to Europe via Istanbul and have always found the staff to be exceptionally friendly and warm. This trip was no acception. I was greated with a lovely smile and shown to my Business Class seat - right away offered something to drink, an extra blanket and my little onboard flight bag which contained a much required eye mask, toothbrush and earplugs. Before the flight took off, I was out like a light. Having rested comfortably, Istanbul Ataturk airport is the next thing that I see. Upon arrival, I headed straight to the Business Class arrivals lounge, to meet with our Turkish Airlines Host, Kemal. Whilst waiting, I scoffed my face with a fresh Turkish breakfast, containing different types of cheese, fresh fruit, eggs and freshly baked bread - topped off with endless cups of Turkish Tea. After breakfast at the arrivals lounge – we make our way to the Vialand Palace Hotel to rest and freshen up. Day 1: Our first stop exploring is Ortaköy, where we head for the Bosphorus tour. But first, we feul up on the famous Kumpir - which is a wood-fired baked potato. The waiter hands me a two-page list of toppings, I tick all the boxes and opt for all trimmings. After our quick lunch we head off on the boat; even though there was heavy rain for several hours, Istanbul carries a different kind of beauty with the dark clouds and historical backdrop. We have tea on board and take in the sites of this enthralling city. Once the tour is over, we have some free time, so I go hunting through the Ortaköy markets to see what goods I can buy and end up purchasing some fresh honey and sundried tomatoes. Once our bus arrives, we head straight to Nisantasi for dinner! We’re greated with the most magnificent view of Istanbul and take a seat for our grand supper. Our host has ordered for us all, so we know this is going to be huge. And, luckily, I have a big appetite! Our table was filled with mezzes, fresh breads, salads and grills. Lots of it. fact magazine

• WEEKEND ESCAPE

Day 2: We awake early for a tour of the hotel and then swiftly head into town for a tour of the Sultanahmet Camii (also known as the Blue Mosque). It is one of the most magnificent buildings in Turkey. It’s interior filled with Arabic calligraphy, giant antique lights and the most luxurious Turkish rugs. From here, we make our way to Topkapi Palace. A visit to the palace's opulent pavilions, jewel-filled treasury and sprawling harem gives a fascinating glimpse into their Ottoman lives. Filled with ottoman armour, swords and artifacts, this palace maintains an extensive collection of books and manuscripts in its library. The Topkapı Palace is notable not only for its architecture and collections but also for preserving the history and culture of the Ottoman Empire. Next up is the lively Kapalı çarşı (Grand Bazaar) in the Sultanahmet area where I haggled for some lovely handcrafted ceramics and prints of whirling dervish to take back home. You can also find lots of gold, fresh Turkish tea, antiques, rugs, ornaments and even furniture! After Stopping for a much-needed Turkish coffee and baklava for a pick me up, we headed to The Basilica Cister, not more than a 10 minute walk away. This is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul and once stored the city’s water. The cistern has the capacity to store 100,000 tons of water. It is virtually empty today with only a few feet of water lining the bottom and tourists admiring in awe. We then head over to Galata area, and have free time to wonder the streets of Galata and Istiklal Avenue and up towards Taksim Square. Galata has an array of quirky shops and independent boutiques, filled with local upcoming artists and designers. I didn’t get time to visit Galata Tower - but this is a must if you’re in the area. Istiklal Avenue is the most famous shopping street and district in Istanbul, hundreds of locals and tourists line the streets, and have all the latest fashion, tech and food to choose from. I get lost in a sea of people and the smells of chestnuts from the vendors lined up along the street – this is my sort of place! Day 3: After breakfast we check out and make our way to the Turkish Airlines training centre where we have a tour around the facilities and get to go on a few new simulators of their new aircrafts.

WEEKEND ESCAPE •

We then head to Ataturk airport and say bon voyage - but not before checking into the Turkish Airlines business class lounge. This place is like a shopping centre, it is in a world of its own and I guarantee no other lounge is like it. Because I had some time to spare, I booked in for a shower in their shower rooms - marble flooring, toliteries, towels and hair dryer are all provided - it was definitely worth the 45-minute wait! I felt invigorated and relaxed so I headed to the cinema room, layed in the huge recliner and had my popcorn - I must have dozed off before I awoke to some amazing smells. I followed my nose over to the pide counter and filled a mountain of pide onto my plate followed by a mixed grill, which was situated right next to it. Drool factor was over the charts. The Lounge also offers massage rooms, childrens play and gaming areas and whatever you want to drink, from ayran to black label - it’s all readily available and never empty. When my flight was announced I didn’t want to leave, this lounge is a holiday after your holiday. I felt full, relaxed and revived for my flight back home – all thanks to Turkish Airlines for hosting and showcasting a magnificient city, their friendly and warm staff, and for opening my eyes to history and culture. ✤

BIG SCREEN Mary Queen of Scots WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary Stuart returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her throne as well as defying pressure to get remarried. With Scotland and England under the rule of Elizabeth I, the two young queens are rivals in power and love as they must decide how to play the game of marriage and independence.

DIRECTOR: Josie Rourke CAST: Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Based on John Guy’s biography Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart, Mary Queen of Scots is a lavish epic featuring two female regents in the masculine world. One of many movies to explore this timeless tale, the film tries to complicate the narrative and tells the story in a way that has never been done before. Starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie as Mary, Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth respectively, the latest rendition talks about themes that are relevant even today. Defying societal pressure to get remarried, Mary heads to Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But with Scotland and England under the rule of her cousin, the compelling Elizabeth I, the young queens battle it out in the name of love and power. Gripped in fear and fascination for each other, both queens experience betrayal and conspiracies within their courts which endanger their thrones and change the course of history forever. A whole lot of scandal, impressive wigs and renaissance flair.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

In order to prevent Grindelwald’s plan from coming to fruition, Albus Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the danger that lies ahead. What follows is the test of love and loyalty in an increasingly divided world.

DIRECTOR: David Yates CAST: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Get ready for some serious nostalgia as the second adventure in J.K. Rowling’s film series takes us back to the magical world we all know and love! Featuring unworldly young magi-zoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), the film takes a darker and more sombre turn. As Albus Dumbledore tries to thwart Grindelwald’s plan to raise pureblood wizards to rule over all nonmagical beings, he enlists the help of Newt, despite the dangers ahead. A treat to all Potterheads, Rowling has incorporated references to the Hogwarts universe, younger versions of old characters as well as hints of an origin myth. Johnny Depp’s epic portrayal of Gilbert Grindelwald and Jude Law’s striking performance as young Dumbledore definitely deserve a special mention.

ON THE RECORD

NON-FICTION

I Might Regret This: Essays, Drawings, Vulnerabilities and Other Stuff By Abbi Jacobson

HIP-HOP

Yandhi

By Kanye West

Giving us our much-needed dose of ‘Ye, Kanye West is back with his ninth studio album, Yandhi. After an eventful year delivering a number of chart-topping hits and plenty of personal drama, his newest album was hotly anticipated. Recorded in his hometown of Chicago and in a studio set up in Uganda, the album features an array of guest artists, including Ty Dolla Sign, Rihanna, Kid Cudi, Young Thug, Migos, Nicki Minaj and posthumous vocals from XXXTentacion. Accompanied with a goofy and bizarre video, I Love It featuring Lil Pump and Adele Givens is as outrageous as it is catchy. The quirky lyrics combined with a catchy beat and comedian Adele Givens’ interspersed jokes make it a song that people won’t be forgetting anytime soon. This album is all about good vibes and great tunes. We Got Love featuring Teyana Taylor is all about self love and self improvement. Showcasing a well-constructed verse by Kanye and Teyana Taylor’s stunning vocals, the track totally reels you in. This has definitely been Kanye’s year in music, maybe not so much on social media though. If the music’s good, we’re not complaining.

POP-SOUL

The Pains of Growing

By Alessia Cara The follow-up to her massively successful debut album, Know-It-All, Alessia Cara’s newest offering blesses us with another round of mesmerizing vocals and amazing tunes. After a number of smash collaborations, Disney theme songs and a Best New Artist Grammy, the Canadian singer has finally released her sophomore full length, The Pains of Growing. A midtempo pop song with soulful vocals and lyrics, Growing Pains is exactly what a classic Alessia Cara song sounds like. A song about loneliness, growing up and trying to overcome the sadness that comes with it, Cara dives into her deepest feelings. A lot more personal than anything she has ever put out before; the album sees her at her most vulnerable. Craving independence and self-empowerment, the bubbly track Trust My Lonely is exactly what we need right now. The perfect balance between vibrant youthfulness and self-affirmation, this is definitely one of our favourite songs on the album. Written during a very important and confusing time of her life, The Pains of Growing is as relatable as it gets. We’ll be belting out these tunes for days to come!

A hilarious and heart touching collection about love, loss, work, comedy and figuring out who you really are. This is the book you need to pick up for a much needed dose of inspiration and a whole lot of laughs. As she makes her way across the country all alone, Abbi finds comfort in solitude as she mulls over the big questions that have shaped her life. Narrated in a wildly funny, relatable voice, with a fun, reflective and ultimately inspiring journey!

TRAILING AHEAD

• CITY RIDES

The 2018 Nissan X-Trail is first and foremost a bolder, muscular and technology-driven SUV. As FACT got into the test drive seat, we soon realised that the vehicle’s sturdy and flexible qualities make it the perfect choice for actionpacked adventures with the family.

A

lthough we have been privy to previous models of the Nissan X-Trail, the 2018 version had promised to deliver an array of improved features and enhanced performance. We could not wait to get our hands on the beautifully-designed steering wheel and put this new-born through its paces. Some people do not realise that Nissan has in fact held the title of highest selling SUVs worldwide in recent times and has become a firm favourite amongst SUV enthusiasts here in the UAE (that includes us). As the valiant red vehicle made its way around the corner to us, we found ourselves staring at visibly upgraded versions of this car’s predecessor. Available in both a five and a seven-seater, our focus is on the slightly smaller (more stylish and manageable) option. The first major change to stand out was the exterior that has been redesigned in a robust and unique manner, giving it a more powerful and attractive appearance. The Nissan X-Trail is well known for its sculptured lines and muscular presence, which has not changed, in fact, the redesigned front end highlights these features increasing the vehicle’s already obvious sense of style. The ‘V-motion’ grille has been widened for greater visual impact and compliments the redesigned bumper with chrome detailing. The improvements to be found within the spacious and comfortable interior were to prove even more impressive. The cabin has been further refined to ensure your comfort as well as improved functionality and practicality. Ample space and headroom, striking new steering wheel, quality leather upholstery, privacy glass, and redesigned storage areas are but a few of the new features to be found. The overall feeling provided is one of grace and proficiency. Perhaps, one of the best and most noticeable changes is Nissan’s innovative XTronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) automatic transmission with a restyled gear selector which eliminates fixed-gear ratios and thus the need for gear-hunting. Instead, CVT keeps the engine at optimal revs for excellent acceleration and fuel economy. This is something we can vouch for 100 per cent; after 10 days of driving the car, that includes trips up and down the E11 between the Emirates as well as everyday errands, going to events and business meetings, plus leisurely hangouts, we only filled up the X-Trail to full once, which cost AED125 – we estimate your monthly petrol spend would be around AED220 – AED250 for someone who drives the car frequently. For an SUV, this is pretty great. 82

fact magazine

Let’s slip into the back of the Nissan X-Trail – ready for more? The spaciousness continues with a second row of seating that slides and reclines, allowing for even more legroom or storage space. The Power Panoramic Moonroof, and leather-appointed seats are welcomed features and add to the comfortable environment. However, the X-Trail exceeds expectations in the boot, which offers a 565-litre capacity and comes standard with Nissan’s innovative Flexible Luggage Board System. The Nissan Motion Activated Liftgate provides easy access with a simple movement of the foot under the bumper. Just swing your foot under the centre of the bumper with your intelligent key in your pocket and the liftgate will open in seconds – made for parents who always have their hands full! The proof of a car’s quality however is in its driving performance and the master craftsmen at Nissan have ensured that you have a multitude of features at your disposal to guarantee a quality ride. The 2018 X-Trail has an option of both advanced petrol and diesel engines. The 2.5-litre, fourcylinder diesel engine option delivers 170HP and 233 Nm or torque. This combined with the automatic transmission and four-wheel drive ensures impressive handling and cornering ability where you always feel in complete control with plenty of power in reserve. In fact, whether it’s a night out in the city, a meeting across town, or a camping trip in the desert, Nissan X-Trail's Intelligent 4X4 adapts to the task at hand. The Intelligent 4X4 is a system that’s capable on-road and off. You can choose fulltime 2WD for maximum efficiency. Auto Mode constantly monitors conditions and adjusts the balance of power between front and rear wheels for best traction. Challenging conditions? 4WD Lock Mode is your choice. With the many terrains and winter weather to tackle in the UAE, the X-Trail certainly has got your back in every driving condition. With enthusiastic drivers all around us on the roads, we were quietly thankful for this model’s impressive safety features. Nissan have included Rear Cross Traffic Alert as well as Blind Spot and Front Collision Warning systems. Nissan’s ‘Intelligent’

technology systems have been developed to include the Around View Monitor, Emergency Braking, Cruise Control and Trace and Ride Control. The car also comes with two airbags as standard, plus side curtain airbags on SL models, driver assistance systems including anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution and stability control. Some of the useful features that are ideal for the UAE include: Active Engine Braking which uses the CVT transmission to apply engine braking to help give smoother deceleration and a more confident feel when braking - so whether you’re slowing for a corner or coming to a stop, X-Trail has you covered. How many of you hate those very annoying bumps in the road, and how you have to constantly interrupt your driving pace and flow? With the X-Trail’s Active Ride Control, the car can automatically apply braking and adjust engine torque after you hit a bump to smooth out your ride. Genius! Then there is Active Trace Control which helps improve performance when you take a corner. It reads the cornering situation and, if needed, can brake each wheel individually to help you steer through the turn with confidence. Furthermore, the Active Brake Limited Slip system senses wheelspin and applies braking pressure onto any slipping wheels, while redirecting power to the wheels with the best traction. There’s only one feeling you get when driving the X-Trail – CONFIDENCE. Additionally, you can focus on having a pleasurable behind-the-wheel experience with all your driving information in one central location on a 5” colour display. Thanks to the New NissanConnect with Navigation and Mobile Apps for all your music, Facebook and Online Google Search, X-Trail is your smartphone’s best friend. By the time we gave back the keys for the X-Trail, we were convinced of the superior class and performance of this quality SUV. We strongly recommend anyone looking for a family-friendly, stylish and kitted-out SUV to start with a 2018 Nissan X-Trail test drive. It will potentially change your motoring life, and all your future drives! ✤

LET’S GET READY TO KINDLE Avid readers are in for a real treat with the new Kindle Paperwhite…

W

ith so many new and innovative products making their way into the gadget market every day, it is hard to determine which ones are definitely worth the moolah. From smartphones and e-readers to speakers and cameras - the options are endless. Making your selection process a whole lot easier, we decided to take the new and improved Kindle Paperwhite for a spin! A sleeker design, more storage, an updated processor and a waterproof design, the new Kindle Paperwhite takes all these essential features and makes them even better. While Kindle has steered clear of the various advanced technologies seen in many new gadgets, it has definitely improved. The fourth generation of the Paperwhite, it boasts a refined design that is smooth and unobtrusive. It has the same 6-inch, black and white, 300 ppi (pixels per inch) display as the previous generation, but with an additional LED light. Making your reading experience even more comfortable, the newest Kindle is 10 per cent thinner and lighter than the last Paperwhite. Ideal for some bathtub and pool reading, the new Paperwhite is also waterproof up to 2 meters for 60 minutes. Apart from a sophisticated design, the e-reader now ships with a minimum of 8 gigabytes of internal storage, double what it shipped before. While the processor has been updated, the new Paperwhite features the same amount of low-power

RAM as previous Kindle models. A feature taken from last year’s Kindle Oasis is audiobooks integration, enabling you to listen to your Audible titles on the e-reader using Bluetooth headphones or a Bluetooth speaker. You can easily upload them all to your Kindle Paperwhite and then connect to your device to listen to your books while you’re on the go. The software experience has also been enhanced and includes new features that will roll out to all Kindles. It includes Amazon’s long-standing Whispersync feature, which ensures your page location, bookmarks and highlights are synced across all of your devices with the Kindle app. But what makes the Paperwhite truly stand out is the new feature that allows you to custom name a preset with a certain font type and size. While Amazon’s Kindles aren’t as innovative as other new electronics in the market, it surely helps you indulge in the joy of reading without any distractions. The Paperwhite’s new lighter design, waterproofing and support for Audible definitely help catch up with the Oasis. If you’re looking for an e-reader with a mid-range look and feel that allows simple and efficient reading, the new Kindle Paperwhite should be right up your reading nook! ✤

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

I

t really is a rare find when you come across a venue that is decked out with fine dining vibes yet offers the atmosphere of a relaxed restaurant. A place where service and food is as wholesome as it is first class. So, when we walked into Gusto at Al Bandar Rotana Creek, it’s as though the culinary Gods had answered all of our foodie prayers. Firstly, Italian is the cuisine and simple, tasty flavours is the game. Gusto carries an unpretentious feeling, it’s more of a chilled out setting with all the best of a fine dining hotspot. Inside, you’ll instantly think about traditional Italian trattorias with large tables and chairs, and uncomplicated seating options. We love the upscale ambiance with lots of contemporary lighting fixtures, funky yet minimalistic shelves and ornaments as well as signature tiled flooring, wall murals and sofa cushions all adding to the character of the venue. Gusto’s charm lies in its ability to give diners a little bit of everything, but what we love most is that this place is not just about your standard pasta and pizza – in fact, the latter isn’t even an option – which is a pleasant surprise. The chefs at Gusto prepare regional Italian favourites just to your liking, all made from fresh and seasonal ingredients, which is why the menu is always changing. During our visit, after a friendly welcome, a tall easel is placed by the table with a menu displayed across it; there’s a lovely selection of starters, salads, mains, and a separate dessert menu for later. On first impressions, the menu is straightforward, uncluttered and filled with variety – we like it. In our attempt to try a bit of everything, we choose the classic Italian dish of Parmigiana and an Avocado Quinoa Salad. The first is an absolute knockout with soft-as-butter eggplant enveloped in a beautifully light tomato sauce and melted cheese. It's easily amongst the top five of the same dish that we’ve tried all over the world! The salad is super fresh and each ingredient manages to hold its own; the chunks of burrata are complemented by pomegranate, juicy red and yellow tomatoes, baby spinach and avocado chunks. If you’re looking to start off your meal on something light yet satisfying – this is the dish that will do the trick. For mains, we keep things carnivorous with a Beef Lasagne and the Lamb Chops with vegetables. Now, if you’re not a huge fan of lasagne for whatever reason, DO NOT deter from ordering it here. Everything about the 102 fact magazine

piping hot main is complete perfection; the minced meat is cooked just right, whilst the cheese adds enough flavour and texture to keep the taste buds excited, and layers of lasagne sheets are neatly visible underneath all the delicious, meaty, cheesy goodness. Of course, if you do love a good lasagne or find yourself craving it, you’ll be walking away very, very gratified after this meal. Let’s talk chops. They were cooked exactly to our requested preference and coated in the most lip-licking sauce. Accompanied with vibrant vegetables – carrot, potato, broccoli and asparagus, this is what we imagine weekend Italian family dinners look like – beautiful and completely appetising. If you’ve got room for dessert (good luck trying not to finish every main course – we tried and failed – they’re just THAT good) then there’s plenty on offer, however, a nice hot cup of green tea with mint leaves saw our meal end with a big smile. As the venue is located on the 18th floor of the hotel, we would urge you to sit outside and bask in a view that overlooks the creek and Dubai’s famous skyline. Is there anywhere more ideal for this lovely winter weather? Service should also be commended for the staff were equally knowledgeable on the food with strong, personable skills. Gusto Italian Restaurant really does have it all! ✤

More than 100,000 guests visited Global Village to be part of its Festival of Lights celebrations and to attend the Neha Kakkar and Ankit Tiwari concert. Guests were treated to a lavish fireworks display that left them awestruck just before the concert began on the Main Stage. The Neha Kakkar and Ankit Tiwari concert began after the fireworks show at 9 pm and was a big hit. The stars stuck to a fast-paced tempo and audiences were seen asking for an encore even at 11 pm. They were pleasantly surprised as Pakistani singer and heartthrob Momina Mustehsan joined the singers on-stage and belted out a couple of her favourite numbers.

MAGIC OF MUMBAI

Stepping away from the stuffiness of many other Indian restaurants in Dubai, the awardwinning Moombai & Co at The H Dubai has a casual, playful nature that draws us in, immediately. M

oombai & Co’s interiors are a major throwback to the yesteryears of Bollywood with Indian film and music memorabilia dotted around the venue’s walls, on the tables and within the very fabric of the place. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a rough-around-the-edges Bollywoodthemed speakeasy with all the character and charm of a restaurant-cum-café-cum-bar – and there’s nothing intimidating about it. Referring to itself as a “casual and vibrant gastrobar bringing the authentic Indian cuisine and Parsi café culture to life in the heart of Dubai” – one thing you’ll instantly acknowledge is that there really isn’t anywhere else like this in the city. In fact, breaking the norm of presenting Indian cuisine through the idea of super fine-dining, Moombai & Co is the type of concept that brings you quality food and tells the stories of a time when traditional Irani-Parsi cafés were the life and soul of Mumbai. There are no fancy tables with heavy chairs and silverware, instead you’ll find comfy booths, bar-style high chairs, and cosy drawing-room inspired sofas for more informal gatherings. The playlist adds to this feeling with iconic songs from Bollywood blockbusters, whilst the staff are also of Indian descent, sharing small snippets of their own memories of India if you dare to ask and start a conversation. But, our favourite thing of all was a mischievous set of “house rules” that the venue has created as a lighthearted guideline for eating there – many of the rules being a play on addressing and breaking the stereotypes associated with dining etiquette (especially in an Indian restaurant!). For example, “No Spitting”, “No Loud Telephoning”, “No Combing Hair”, “No Flirting”, “No Washing Hands in Plates & Glass” and perhaps the most important of them all: “All Castes Welcome” – a bold and clever way of presenting Moombai & Co’s values of inclusivity. After all, isn’t food a universal language?! As long as you’re partial to some good grub, good fun and good hospitality, everyone is invited! When we visited, it was the restaurant’s first day of serving diners their brand new menu. A vibrant mix of Small Plates, Bombay Barbeque (straight from the tandoor), Salads, Curries and More, Biryani, Roti and Rotli, Puddings and an extensive list of very creative beverages, makes up a variety-filled menu that has something for every taste. We begin with the ever-so-crispy Onion Bhaji, presented in a tall cone, which reflects a nice street food vibe. Then, the Pepper Calamari which throws us right off – in a good way – it’s a pleasant 106 fact magazine

surprise to find calamari on the menu of an Indian restaurant, and we like it. Served on a bed of buttered kulcha (flatbread), it’s an explosion of flavour. The Tandoori Broccoli will be right up any vegetarian diner’s street. They’re charred beautifully, as are the Chaap Lababdar - lamb chops marinated with natural tenderisers and coriander chilli mix. We ate the juicy meat right down to the bone – it was SO good! Moombai & Co’s Sali Marghi is indeed compelling. A simple homemade chicken curry with a spice factor and topped with straw potatoes – it starts out subtle and creamy before a spicy nudge takes it in an unexpected, delicious direction. We were persuaded, too, by the Paneer Hari Mirch made up of cottage cheese tossed with roasted

ON THE MENU •

green pepper, green chilli and spinach gravy. This is a more sophisticated paneer dish in terms of flavours than any we’ve tried before. The favourite main dish was the piping hot Shrimps Biryani which came with lots of fried onion – a classic that tasted just like home, bringing back so many memories of our beloved childhood trips to India. The desserts we tried were exceptionally good. The Baked Gulab Jamun sees the mini sweet milk dumplings submerged into thickened milk – you’ve never tried gulab jamun cooked like this – 100 per cent a guaranteed palate awakening. The Bhapa Doi is rose flavoured steamed yogurt, saffron dust and berries – all fresh, light ingredients that complement each other exquisitely. At Moombai & Co there is nostalgia, there is quirkiness, there is an eclectic spirit and all of this is visible through the crafted cocktails and top-of-the-range beverages. The Nimboo Paani/Soda and Masala Cola caught our attention – two drinks we often went out to drink from street carts on our past holidays in India – the kind of déjà vu moment that you’re likely to experience at this upbeat local hangout. ✤

ARTISTIC ANDES

We’ve been waiting with anticipation for the opening of Andes, Dubai’s latest South American restaurant. Having admired the artful images strategically placed across the restaurant’s Instagram feed in the months prior to launch, the marketing strategy successfully worked to build our anticipation for the opening. FACT’s David Tapley heads over for dinner… fact magazine

O

n arrival the venue is smaller than expected with the entrance marked by elegant bronze lettering. Andes’ dining room is decorated pleasantly and features a small bar area and an open show kitchen in which you can watch the chefs artfully plating dishes. In the middle of the room rise a number of slender trees complete with green and purple foliage, while an outside terrace has the capacity for an additional 70 covers. Service is particularly strong (a rarity in the city, even for well-established restaurants) with staff well versed in all aspects of the menu, from the preparation of the dishes through to the exact origins of specific ingredients. A meal at Andes begins with a couple of amusebouche compliments of the kitchen. A simple sourdough, honey and cheese combination arrives plated upon a rock. An effective device used to introduce us to the geological terrain of the Andes Mountains and a showcase for the quality South American ingredients. The term ‘earthy’ springs to mind when dining at Andes, for the cuisine is plated upon rocks, slates and some truly impressive crockery. These elements work in conjunction with the texture of the food to continually bring us back to the idea of nature – grasslands, mountains, deserts and oceans – all integral elements of the South American landscape. While the food certainly impresses, offering an adventurous dining experience and education in the cuisine. The sweetbreads pasta (AED66) is a prime example, with the ribbons of fresh al dente pasta working alongside the flavour of mushrooms and the creamy sweetbreads. A niche ingredient derived from the pancreas that you won’t find on many menus in Dubai. Similarly, the humo (AED78) is a fantastic dish and quite possibly the restaurant’s signature. Comprising a lone octopus tentacle, beautifully tender due to a three-hour ‘massaging process’ and served alongside purple potatoes and a Parmigiano-Reggiano sauce. Cheese is not something we would expect to complement octopus, but the flavours work surprisingly well. Though we would note that the presentation which involves chocolo (Peruvian corn) is entirely unnecessary, considering the octopus is moved onto a separate plate for serving. Unfortunately, the Masa Madra (AED38) a dish of calamari and lime emulsion is far too acidic and the yellowfin tuna ceviche (AED56) is somewhat underwhelming in comparison to the colourful presentation, but these brief lulls are easily 110 fact magazine

remedied especially considering how new the concept is. Main courses revolve around various meats and are particularly good. The Criolla (AED86), Angus picanha served with Savoy cabbage, smoked potato puree and Andes mole is a wonderful choice of meat. The Cordero (lamb chops served with fermented berry sauce, parsnip purée, smoked tapioca, cacao nibs) and the Pollo (grilled corn-fed chicken accompanied by bean purée and new plums) are also of significant note, but it’s the 12-hour smoked brisket (AED58) which won our hearts with its sweet potato puree and shallot confit. All meats served at Andes hail from Australia and the USA and the quality is immediately evident, with the unique Andean ingredients working wonders in elevating the plates. The Patagonia (AED48) is a stunning dessert and visual representation of the desolate region. Glacial shards representing an icy tundra, surround an organic Peruvian chocolate mousse adorned by a dark berry sorbet. These fruits of the Patagonian grasslands help to cut through the decadence of the rich mousse, and the flavours harmonise well. Andes marks an exciting new addition to Dubai’s Trade Centre area and having spent the summer dining in London and Paris, it’s nice to see a venue embracing the notion of the tasting menu. Mention should also be given to the prices which are very reasonable and we can’t think of many places where you can order a steak for around 50 dirhams, especially within a fine-dining setting! While not every dish is an immediate hit, Andes offers plenty to admire. For fans of South American food this restaurant should be at the top of your must-visit list. ✤
