H

ow did this happen? Is it me or is time escaping us like it literally doesn’t exist? December 2019 is geared up to be packed with all kinds of lovely treats, but before you rush onto the next one, pause for a second and think about all the things you’ve been able to achieve and experience this year. If, like me, the year seems to be a blur, just scroll through the photo gallery on your phone (or instagram profile – guilty!) and remind yourself of all the amazing memories you’ve made. At FACT, it’s been a rollercoaster with awards seasons, lots of cool trips and events, and another successful year of publishing. This month is, hands down, the most lively and special in Dubai. We’ll be getting into the celebratory mood with many of you this holiday season. When I’m not in the office or at home playing all the Christmas songs on YouTube, you can find me at one of the many festive happenings around the city. Turn to p23 and start your merry journey with everything from the best Christmas treats to the ultimate Christmas Eve and Christmas Day gatherings work looking into for your celebrations. Following on from this, you’ll find a list of our favourite NYE Hotspots (p39) in Dubai and what they’re all offering for the eve of December 31. Choose one, send out the whatsapp group message and BOOK your table, fast! Last month saw FACT mark the 3rd annual dining awards here in Dubai and what a night it was; I’m talking winter breeze, a beautiful 400-strong crowd and great food and drinks. More importantly, the winners were announced and you can check them out again on p66 alongside all the pictures from the glamorous night. As always, food, fashion, tech and lots of festive inspo is waiting to be discovered - just make sure that you get plenty of time in for some carolling and gingerbread-making at every opportunity - I know I will - #noregrets. For me, family, food and travel were once again at the forefront of my 2019, and they’re all things that will continue into the next year! In fact, a new bucket list is due, so as I sit down with Lonely Planet at my disposal, 2020 doesn’t seem that scary after all! If Dubai’s entertainment calendar has anything to do with it, we’re looking at another incredible year ahead in the UAE *coughs* Lauryn Hill… Dubai Jazz Festival, anyone?. See you on the flip side… Happy New Year, friends. ☺

A

ya, meaning “beautiful” in Japanese showcases the very best of innovative dining in the UAE with its bold flavors and unexpected layered Asian cuisine. Chef Izu – the eternally popular culinary master takes traditional Asian dishes and adds international twists to launch one of Dubai’s most creative menus. Signature dishes include a mezze of Kunafa wrapped prawns, yuzu kosho, sweet with sour tensuyu and Miso marinated Black Cod with grapefruit miso as well as brown butter ice cream with olive oil sponge and hazelnut crumble which is prepared à La Minute. The menu has a delicate mix of whimsically elaborate rolls, buns and a Josperyaki with a life changing Wagu Katsu sando with Aya bbq sauce and Hokkaido Milk Bread straight from the streets of Tokyo. In true Izu style the quality and gastronomic technique is second to none, with help from a gregarious collective of experts lead by Head Chef Christopher Blake, formerly Chef at Zuma Dubai. Chef Izu Ani, said: “Dubai has been waiting for a fresh concept that layers traditions and flavors, creating beautifully delicate dishes that guests will not find anywhere else. “We wanted to take Asian cuisine to a different level with the most important elements being imbedded deep in the tastes of the menu. The passion we have behind the concept will present itself in the aromas, interior, staff, food, drinks and atmosphere 10

THE ART DISPLAY HAS a strong focus on cubism weaving its way through the interior spaces of the InterContinental Hotel Dubai Festival City, The Events Centre and Holiday Inn Dubai Festival City with 23 painting installations that can be viewed by hotel guests and art enthusiasts. ‘The art of breaking up my subjects into smaller geometric forms and reassembling them in a block wise construction methodology is a sheer joy.’ Ria Sharma said. ‘For me, cubism represents a fine fusion of my two professions – an artistic derivative of my civil engineering background, whereas, reflecting multiple perspectives, is how my inner artist has evolved into.’ Since 2000, she is based in Dubai and has been involved in the design and construction of iconic projects such as the world’s tallest hotel apartments and award-winning skyscrapers. WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Presenting the beloved story of the March sisters, Little Women captures the timeless tale in a whole new light. Bringing the writings of Louisa May Alcott to life, Greta Gerwig’s latest offering is definitely one of the most anticipated adaptations of 2019. Focusing more on the sisters’ adult lives, the film follows their journey as they leave their family home and support each other during challenging times. Unlike its previous retellings, the film delves deeper into themes rather than the traditional narrative, and shifts back and forth in time. Following the American Civil War, the March sisters come together as they navigate love, loss and forgiveness. Writer-Director Greta Gerwig’s reworking of this timeless classic is simply breathtaking.

Cooking with Mary Berry By Mary Berry

ALT-INDIE/POP COUNTRY/ROCK

Ocean

Everyday Life By Coldplay

By Lady Antebellum

Brimming with breathtaking storytelling and raw emotions, Lady Antebellum’s latest album sees them stepping into a new musical chapter. A warm welcome back for the country group, the 13-song record maintains their catchy laid-back vibe and reintroduces it with a touch of vulnerability. Putting emotions at the forefront, this is the trio’s first full-length EP since their 2017’s Heart Break. Written by singer-songwriter Ryan Hurd with Sam Ellis, Laura Veltz, and Jon Green, the track talks about eternal heartbreak and the inability to truly move on. Reminiscent of the rich and smooth sounds of the group’s earlier hits, the song brings them back to their true roots. Revealing a new and more personal side of the trio, Ocean encapsulates everything the band has been through in the past couple years. Ocean, the emotionally charged title track is an absolute tearjerker. Packed with minimal instrumental elements, the song features somber piano, gauzy guitar and Scott’s mesmerising vocals. A cinematic and theatrical harmony with a message, you’ll be belting out this track for days to come. Immersed in their life stories, the album is all about returning to the core of who the band really is.

New music is on the way from Coldplay! Armed with their harmonious melodies and soothing lyrics, the British band is back with its eighth studio album. Set to be a double album (we’re shrieking!) the record is divided into two parts, Sunrise and Sunset. A beautiful return to form for the band, Everyday Life is rooted in nostalgia and is very sensitive and earthy, unlike anything the band has done before. Featuring vocals by Belgian singer Stromae and horn sections by Femi Kuti, Arabesque sees Coldplay treading unfamiliar soil. Jazzier and better than ever, it is definitely one of the most amazing chart-ready songs released this year. Trying to make sense of things and expressing what they see and feel, Coldplay aims to shift away from all the negativity in the world and celebrate all that is good. With gorgeous production and performance elements, the single, Everyday Life, is a comeback to the lush balladry the band is known for. Making us fall in love with them all over again, this breathtaking soundtrack has us way in our feelings!

With the holiday season upon us, whip up some delectable dishes courtesy of Mary Berry! Packed with a number of baking favourites and classic dishes, the book offers 150 everyday recipes from the star judge of the ABC series The Great Holiday Baking Show and the PBS series The Great British Baking Show. Take your pick from her broad selection of practical and foolproof brunch ideas, soups, salads, mains, sides, desserts and more inspired by Mary’s six decades in the kitchen.

THE CADILLAC XT4 When the all-new Cadillac XT4 arrived in the Middle East, we were curious to see what the brand’s first compact SUV brought to the driving game. C

adillac is forever changing the ways that cars are designed. Founded in 1902 by Henry Leland, who named the company after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the brand was the first to bring the idea of interchangeable parts to the automotive industry and laid the ground work for modern mass production of automobiles. In 1910, Cadillac became the first company to offer a passenger car with a fully enclosed cabin, a major change from the vehicles of the time. Not only did Cadillac pioneer the first production car – the Model Thirty – in 1912, to feature an electronic self-starter, ignition, and lighting, but by dropping the crank starter, Cadillac opened the door to women drivers. It was a few years later that Cadillac brought the world the V-type, water-cooled, eight-cylinder (V8) engine, which would become the signature of the Cadillac brand. From offering up more than 500 colour combinations in the roaring ‘20s to introducing iconic engines in the ‘30s and adapting some of their aircraft technology to create the first ever tailfin on a vehicle in the ‘40s, Cadillac has seen and achieved many firsts in the automobile industry. Power steering, front seatbelts, automatically controlled headlamps, stereo radio, digital display and, later, the legendary Escalade SUV are all innovations credited to Cadillac. So, it’s important to trace the brand’s history as a car manufacturer, especially because in 2019, it’s coming in stronger than ever with the XT4. Developed on an exclusive compact SUV architecture, the XT4 marks Cadillac’s entry into the industry’s fastest-growing luxury segment. Featuring Cadillac’s new 2.0L Turbo engine and advanced technology, the XT4 delivers expressive design, confident performance and a spacious cabin. After taking the vehicle out onto the UAE roads, we can safely say that it was made for the Middle East. Let us tell you why… Firstly, the XT4 was developed by a team of young designers, who truly represent the heart of the target audience. The sophisticated SUV exterior and intelligently designed cabin will no doubt prove a hit amongst regional millennial consumers who expect daring, bold designs and cutting-edge technology. In terms of size, the Cadillac XT4 sits comfortably and holds its own in a segment that is scattered with the likes of Range Rover, Nissan, and even BMW SUVs. Simple and sculpted lines draw the customer in and accentuate the XT4’s powerful proportions and aggressive presence. All models feature advanced LED lighting technology front and rear. Cadillac’s vertical L-shaped lighting signature is stretched horizontally, emphasising the XT4’s width and confident stance. Standard LED taillights are housed in traditional red lenses on Luxury and Premium Luxury, while the Sport model receives tinted neutral-density (clear) lenses that complement the generally darker exterior colour choices. Let’s just put it this way, when the Cadillac XT4 comes around the corner at valet – it’s going to turn heads. We’re immediately infatuated with the XT4’s interior which has the Cadillac design aesthetic distilled: the thoughtful and artistic integration of technology and appealing style. Whether you’re road tripping with a group of friends or a young family, the cabin is exceptionally refined, with expected segment-leading rear48

seat spaciousness. The new XT4’s cabin conveys boldness and strength with youthful athleticism. Sweeping arcs and tapered lines enhance the feeling of spaciousness and give it a taut, tightly wrapped appearance. The interior elements come together in a sophisticated and modern design. Intuitive technology includes next-generation wireless device charging and an in-cabin air ionizer. This is everything you need for long journeys and keeping those iPads charged for entertainment and making sure that the air around you is comfortable to be sat in. Led by the latest Cadillac User Experience, the brand’s most advanced infotainment interface, the XT4 offers a connected environment. The next generation Cadillac User Experience is a dynamic platform that offers a smartphone-like experience with an intuitive interface, faster response and improved voice recognition that can be updated over time to meet a customer’s evolving connectivity needs. It leverages the cloud and available embedded 4G LTE connection to enable personalisation, available connected navigation and news, marketplace and entertainment applications via the app store and a new rotary controller that offers users alternative ways to interact with the system. We linked up our iPhone to the car in just the touch of a button and voila – the music, the phonebook, and making/answering calls was all at our fingertips – super convenient. The whole experience is very user-friendly. The new controller includes volume and seek forward/back controls for the audio system; shortcut buttons for fast access to the most frequently used apps such as Audio, Phone, Navigation (if available) and Home; and a large centre dial to operate primary features of the most frequently used apps, scroll menus and lists and select other apps to be displayed.

CITY RIDES •

All XT4 models are driven by an all-new Cadillac 2.0L Turbo engine, producing an SAE-certified output of 237 hp (177 kW). Coupled with a ninespeed automatic transmission with next-generation Electronic Precision Shift, the new engine features new efficiency-enhancing technologies including Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation). We drove a fair few times between Abu Dhabi and Dubai and were thoroughly impressed by the fuel efficiency – this is a car made with pocket-friendly spending in mind. The XT4 also sees the debut of Cadillac’s new global “Y” trim strategy, with specific content and styling cues featured on distinctive Premium Luxury and Sport trims, tailored to different customer tastes and preferences. XT4 Sport models feature a gloss black mesh grille inspired by Cadillac’s high-performance V-Series models, gloss black window moldings and specific Sport alloy wheel choices. Cadillac will roll out this new trim strategy beginning with the XT4 and the 2019 CT6 top-of-range sedan. Seven exterior colours are offered on the 2019 XT4: Autumn Metallic, Crystal White Tricoat, Twilight Blue Metallic, Shadow Metallic, Red Horizon Tintcoat, Stellar Black Metallic and Radiant Silver Metallic. The all-new compact SUV represents Cadillac’s 10-year expansion plan and shift in direction. Starting with the first-ever XT4, Cadillac will bring six new models to market in the space of two and a half years. fact magazine

When it comes to channelling the XT4’s power to the pavement, a strut-type front suspension and five-link independent rear suspension are tuned to balance refinement with responsiveness. The standard Driver Select Mode allows that tuning to be adjusted on demand for different driving styles and road conditions. In fact, we powered our way through a couple of strong breezy days with complete agility – the XT4 feels smooth and nimble on the roads with excellent response time when changing lanes and warning the driver about car distances. A twin-clutch all-wheel-drive system is available and offers the convenience of decoupling entirely from the rear wheels when the driver chooses, eliminating drivetrain friction. XT4 Sport’s available Active Sport Suspension features Continuous Damping Control and takes driving dynamics and control to a higher threshold, using electronic sensors to monitor the road in real time and making damping adjustments every two milliseconds. The XT4 is also the first Cadillac to introduce electro-hydraulic braking assist, which supplants the traditional vacuum-assisted power braking system with an electro-hydraulic system that enhances fuel economy and takes up less space under the hood. Yet another first for Cadillac, proving the brand’s commitment to innovation and moving with the times. The new Cadillac XT4’s confident, athletic appearance is complemented by great agility. It is characteristically Cadillac in refinement and responsiveness, but with a youthful edginess derived from the brand’s critically acclaimed sports sedans. We’re SO onboard. ✤ 50

WOMEN Cool minimalism may be your go-to look, but, for the holiday season, you might want to try a decadent dose of glamour – which is where the H&M womenswear Holiday 2019 collection comes in. And, whether you plan to lounge in front of an open fire or take to the dancefloor, it’s the textural touches that will raise your style game. Cream and oatmeal ribbed knits, layered upon one another, will make winter white feel utterly luxurious. When nightfall comes, it’s time to embrace the joy of dressing up: from plush velvet and jacquard suiting to glittering green sequined mini dresses, all served with dazzling rhinestones and elegant pearls. The collection’s key pieces invite considered clashes and an effortless attitude. A gently-oversized coat in cream or a chunky check has the power to entice all day long. A lightweight patterned high- neck dress works with a chunky ribbed knit by day, and with instantly energising rhinestone drop earrings come night. Similarly, a velvet tuxedo jacket works as well for a working lunch as for a last- minute party invite with matching wide-leg trousers (and for extra glamour points, pair it with a glittering sequined body-suit). Wear natural pearl hair-slides with everything – you’ll find them an energising update to any outfit. ✤ 56

And voila, that’s your Friday afternoon sorted. But, what about Saturday? For those of us who dedicate Friday to lie-ins and low-key socialising, Saturday is the day we want to go out and get our foodie fix. The culinary team over at Mina’s Kitchen in The Westin Mina Seyahi knows what we’re talking about. We were introduced to The Long Breakfast this month; a fourhour, free-flowing breakfast promotion taking over the show to uplift your Saturday gatherings. • CULINARY SPOTLIGHT monochrome tiles, truly instagrammable details and a mouthwatering array of freshly-cooked breakfast favourites from across the globe. The foodie rendezvous is all the best parts of a laid-back morning meets glorious afternoon soiree where talented chefs serve up everything from scrumptious omelettes to moreish pastries, cereals and cold cuts to salads, pizza, biryani and desserts galore. The spread is so varied, it could easily give some of the city’s top brunches a run for their money. Live cooking stations are home to perfectly poached eggs, liplicking chia puddings, Middle Eastern delights and even Asian specialities. Show stopping dishes such as Salmon En Croute and Roast Beef also make a grand appearance. Those looking for a guilty pleasure or a super-healthy breakfast will be equally pleased as the buffet serves up everything from the full English breakfast experience and a tower of pancakes as high as you desire, to overnight oats with toasted pecans and cedar cinnamon honey and organic, cold-pressed juices. Traditional options like the waffles and crepes doused in maple syrup and the selection of croissants are a huge hit at the table. We even get an omelette made at 1pm and engulf it all with a side of hash browns, grilled mushrooms and baked beans – it’s the most perfect plateful for a casual Saturday get-together. Exotic favourites are presented in the form of oysters to curries, scallops and more. We’d highly recommend the appetiser station with salads as well as the cheese corner with a lovely selection to satisfy all the cravings. Having undergone a stunning renovation, Mina’s Kitchen is a throwback to dining halls of an era gone by. It boasts a whimsical feel and a stunning bar. The venue is expansive in size with high ceilings and plenty of seating options, so even when the place is full, you’ll still feel like you’re having an intimate dining experience. To top it all off, fresh juices are prepared a la minute to quench your thirst (the apple juice is particularly good). There’s a great assortment of hot and cold drinks and anyone who wants to take it up a notch can opt for the premium package. The Oh Behave! Package comes with unlimited food and soft beverages such as free-flowing coffee and freshly-squeezed juices for AED145. Alternatively, diners wanting to treat themselves to a truly indulgent Saturday can choose the Yeh Why Not! package which is priced at just AED245 and serves up a glorious selection of beverages, including bloody mary, mimosa, spritz and hops. The service at Mina’s Kitchen is impeccable. Staff are attentive and friendly without being intrusive. This is the kind of place where you get guaranteed quality and a chance to sit back, eat good food and chat away with your nearest and dearest, knowing that there’s no rush to leave. Sign us up! ✤

STRAIGHT OUT OF JAPAN The small homegrown restaurant, Reif Japanese Kushiyaki, has opened at Dubai’s Dar Wasl Mall, garnering rave reviews and a constant queue of hungry diners eager to see what homegrown talent Reif Othman has created with his latest vision. FACT’s David Tapley was amongst those waiting in line…

NEW IN TOWN •

T

he focus at Reif Japanese Kushiyaki hones in on the traditional Japanese street food known as Kushiyaki which are basically grilled skewers. The ingredients are more unique than you may expect with the likes of Angus beef, chicken wings and grilled shrimp immediately drawing our attention as we peruse the menu. Reif’s restaurant space is beautifully conceived with embossed wooden panelling and a show-kitchen that is constantly alive with activity. As the team of chefs work tirelessly on plate after plate of top-notch Japanese dishes that aim to bring simple comfort food to Dubai’s discerning diners. With seating for just 29 diners inside, the configuration of small wooden tables wraps around the open kitchen in an intimate L shape. The back of the room is given over to a 3D mural of comic book character Astro Boy replete with robotic mechanisms and a beating heart of pulsating red light that has been masterfully created for Reif by Lebanese artist, Lauris Zailaa. An outside terrace for an additional thirty diners has also recently opened. The appealing menu covers a range of Japanese dishes and aside from the Kushiyaki diners can feast on ramen, gyoza, gunkan and a selection of raw dishes. The menu is concise but appealing and as Othman himself puts it, every dish is a signature, making return visits an absolute must. What Reif’s Kushiyaki achieves so effortlessly is to bring unconventional Japanese street food at affordable prices. Though there are a number of higher-priced items should you wish to splurge and the Sanchoku Wagyu Sando (AED145) is one such example and could well be a contender for one of team Facts favourite dishes of the year. Generously sliced marinated Wagyu, slathered with a sweet and viscous tonkatsu sauce, that sandwiches the meat between thick slices of Japanese milk bread that are deceptively light. Never ones able to resist burrata, the Puglia burrata (AED110) is up there with the best in the city and is generously portioned upon smoked olive oil and scattered with strawberries and pistachio pieces. The creamy nature of the cheese is undeniable and works as a showcase on how to let quality ingredients shine. From the raw dishes, we enjoy the raw seabass (AED55). A beautifully balanced dish presenting thin slices of seabass swimming in yuzu soy and yellow pepper chutney. The result is an exciting dish of intense sweetness with citrusy notes with a touch of texture that successfully manages to harmonise the palate. It’s recommended to order a number of dishes to share and this strategy appears to work as a means to explore as much of the menu as possible. Trust us when we say you are going to want to try everything! A dish such as the 18-hour ramen (AED59) offers fact magazine

83

• NEW IN TOWN

a seductive ginger chicken broth that is full of depth and robust flavours. The ramen is an easy contender for best in Dubai and is plentiful enough for two or even three diners to share. The Kushi (skewers) are available with a variety of ingredients impaled upon sharp bamboo skewers. Obscure ingredients such as chicken neck can be ordered, though we found ourselves favouring the Angus beef with Goma wasabi that brings a pleasing heat to the charred pieces of meat that have been flame-grilled to perfection. With food this good it’s easy to over-order (as we did on both our recent visits). Show some restraint and ensure you leave room for dessert as the taiyaki (AED38), a fish-shaped caked upended into an earthy matcha soft serve ice cream, is a crowd-pleaser. Similarly, the molten cake (AED38) takes some time to prepare but is well with the wait with an oozing peanut butter centre that complements the chocolate to startling effect. Service is casual but effortless as the team flit from the open kitchen to the table-tops with ease and friendly demeanour. Chef Reif himself is often on hand to greet guests, welcoming them into his restaurant like old friends and striking up effortless banter that adds excitement and inclusivity to this in-demand dining experience. With queues snaking out of the door on a daily basis, and value for money comfort food, Reif Japanese Kushiyaki marks a turning point in the Dubai dining landscape, tapping into the psyche of what diners expect from a meal. The restaurant is evidently the talk of the town so isn’t it about time you visited Dubai’s hottest new dining destination. ✤

SOTHERN SOUL FOOD There are few places in Dubai that you can walk into in the middle of the day and feel completely relaxed. The kind of place where waiters and bar staff remember your face, remember what you like to eat on the menu, and greet you like you’re part of the family; Nola Eatery & Social House happens to be one of these rare dining gems as FACT’s Shabana Adam finds out…

L

ocated in JLT at the Armada BlueBay Hotel, Nola is a breath of fresh air in a culinary scene that is highly saturated with gimmicks and theatrics. At Nola, you’ll find the genuine; a venue that has its own soul, one that is instantly captivating from the moment you step in. Inspired by the jazz clubs of New Orleans, Nola dishes up Southern American comfort food with a healthier, more modern take in a convivial setting, complemented by a diverse and colourful beverage list. Speakeasy vibes reign supreme as vintage tiles pattern the floor, wooden stools line the bar and cosy, laid-back characteristics of the Big Easy’s music scene are communicated through a vibrant design aesthetic. Mismatched seating, intimate booths, living-room-style dining tables and even a rustic, classy book shelf all pay homage to everywhere from the French Quarter to the Marigny, the Treme, uptown on Oak Street and onto St. Claude Avenue – the most thriving districts for live music and hearty food in New Orleans. In fact, we spot a sheer curtain to the right which is concealing the stage at Nola – where artists play to the evening crowds. We’re here for lunch, and there’s a more chilled out ambience. The doors out into the new Nola Garden are wide open, letting the cool winter breeze flow into the restaurant with the sun shining bright. For a moment, we forget that we’re in Dubai. Much like the atmosphere and the great service, the food at Nola is definitely one of the biggest talking points for diners. What unites people in New Orleans is the city’s love affair with its traditional food. Nola is an ode to this romance, conducted over large tables graced with jambalaya, po-boy sandwiches stuffed with meat and everything from Creole to Cajun bringing comfort to the taste buds. Our food journey starts with Louisiana Crab Cakes – pan fried with spring onion and cilantro and served with remoulade sauce (AED81) – they’re exquisite. The Hot Spinach Cheese Dip (AED44) is a complete revelation. Oven baked and served with sour dough crostini; we scoop 86

up mouthfuls rapidly – you will too. It was, however, the Empanadas (AED51) stuffed with spicy black-eyed peas and mozzarella cheese that stopped us in our tracks. UNREAL. The crescent pockets are perfectly flaky and packed with a generous amount of delicious filling. There’s enough in one portion for at least three diners to share (although you might want to eat them all for yourself). We move on with a New Orleans staple – the Po-Boy; essentially, a stuffed sandwich on French bread, topped off with fixin’s of your choice. At Nola, they shake things up with their Po-Boy offerings. We dive into the Chickie Wah Wah (AED64) – a trio of sliders overflowing with pulled chicken, spicy corn, coleslaw, cheddar and pickles. A stunning combination of flavours that will surely please those who want classic grub with a savoury twist. The Dirty Shrimps (AED82) will no doubt leave you wanting more. You’ll get two potato buns stuffed with smoky Cajun shrimp, topped with lettuce, roasted tomato and lime mayo. A true Southern dish with all the good feels. Another standout was the colourful Vegan Jambalaya (AED61). This is one for the epicurious amongst us. The dish has represented New Orleans since Colonial Spanish settlers tried reconstructing their native paella from locally-sourced ingredients. At Nola, they do a seafood option and a vegan version which is teeming with smoked bell peppers, mushrooms and corn, cooked with spicy Creole rice. Served hot, this is the ideal winter warmer that you need to fire up your afternoon with a tasty kick. The Braised Short Rib (AED106), slow cooked in black ale and served with mashed potatoes is also a winner. The meat is tender and filling with the creamy mash being a lovely accompaniment. And if you want to try something from the sides, we would highly recommend the mac ‘n’ cheese. Dessert is one big tribute to N’Awlins. Take a bite into the New Orleans Famous Beignets (AED37) and fall in love with the deepfried doughnut dessert. Beignets were first introduced to the city by the French-Creole colonists in the 18th century. The concept is simple – dough is fried then covered with mounds of powdered sugar – but the result is extraordinary. At Nola, they’re served with a side of hot chocolate sauce. The Nola Banana Fosters (AED37) is another historically-relevant dessert born in the 1950s when New Orleans was the major point of entry for bananas shipped from central and south America. It’s a delightful concoction of caramelised bananas served with vegan ice cream on a skillet – endless “mmmhs” and “aaahs” from us. The Sizzling Brownie (AED37) is not only a yummy choice, but also an instagram-worthy pick. It’s no wonder that Nola picked up the award for Best North American and Caribbean Restaurant in Dubai 2019 at the recent FACT Dining Awards Dubai. There are no tricks here. Just honest food, authentic service and the true soul of the deep south. ✤

The venue’s casual, laid-back ambience follows through into the dishes coming out of the kitchen. Traditionally described as “pub grub” – at UBK you’ll find a comprehensive one-page menu stacked with all the favourites, complemented by a vast selection of beverages. Not knowing what to expect, we started our epicurean adventure with somewhat of a revelation; Edamame Hummus (AED42) made from soy beans, chickpeas, and tahini, served with the crispiest bread sticks ever. A simple concoction that caused such a stir at the table, this hummus is SO good that it could easily give the original a run for its money. Creamy and

flavourful, we scoop it all up in impressive timing. Another item from the sharing bites + snacks section that we devoured was the Famous UBK Chicken Wings (AED72 for 0.5kg and AED125 for 1kg). Coated in bbq sauce – you can opt for sriracha chilli too – they’re everything you want and need to accompany your choice of sips when gathering with a group of friends. The Wagyu Beef Lasagna (AED95) is layered perfection. We all know that Wagyu is the caviar of meat and to see it on the menu at UBK is further testament to the changes and improvements that have been made here. The flavour of the lasagne is a mouth-filling savouriness combined with a palatecoating richness; the texture as tender as lightly cooked fish. The streak of good food continues with the moreish joys of Truffle Mac ‘n’ Cheese (AED65) and the most tender, fall-offthe-fork Braised Lamb Shank (AED105). The slow cooked lamb is served with mashed potato and gravy, reminiscent of many Sunday winter dinners at home in England. The nostalgic vibes take a pit stop as we veer towards the vegetarian options which there are plenty of. The Beyond Burger with Healthy Salad (AED69) is a plant-based vegan burger with avocado and jalapeno in a vegan bun. It looks and tastes just like the real deal and we love that UBK has given time and thought into offering delicious vegan and vegetarian fact magazine

• ON THE MENU dishes that could easily hold their own against their meaty counterparts. It was, however, the Spinach Ricotta Tortellini (AED79) that was crowned the dish of the day. Pockets of stuffed pasta, full to the brim with spinach and ricotta cheese, swam graciously in a wild mushroom cream and truffle oil sauce. The result: a dish that will make you seriously believe that being vegetarian wouldn’t be too difficult after all. It’s undeniably delectable with well-balanced flavours and generous filling. Creamy, cheesy and with a slight buttery aroma, this is the one dish that we would come back to UBK for. Just order it! The new menu also boasts Tex Mex + Tacos, Chefs Grills + Mains and even Eat Your Greens with a variety of salads, reflecting its need to provide quality fare for every dietary requirement. Dessert is a whole different game. The Dulce De Leche Cake (AED35) leaves us speechless – from the ensuing food coma but mainly from the soft, caramel texture and tastes – wonderful. The Chocolate Lava Cake (AED45) is exactly what we wanted it to be – gooey in the middle and spongey otherwise. The fresh Churros (AED40) are served with cinnamon and Nutella dip or Mövenpick vanilla ice cream. Either way, they’re a definite crowd pleaser. When Dubai’s climate turns balmy, the award-winning UBK terrace outside becomes an urban oasis amidst skyscrapers and trees. It’s open now for you to enjoy daily happy hour deals, live music, two pool tables, private booths and excellent service. The facelift that UBK’s menu has undergone was a long time coming. The high standards of the food served is proof that investing the time to perfect a menu is hugely worthwhile. Before it was just the sports and the drinks, now the crowd is going to come back for classic comfort cuisine that reminds them of good times – and what better feeling to evoke with food than this? ✤
