“
New year — a new chapter, new verse, or just the same old story? Ultimately we write it. The choice is ours.” – Alex Morritt
A
nother New Year’s letter means another chance to bring you an attemp at words of inspiration to kick-start your next 365 days. Now, anyone who knows me will tell you that I love a good motivational meme, uplifting quote or kick-up-the-perky peach words of wisdom - after all, isn’t that why we have Instagram? However, like every year, FACT focuses on helping you to enhance your lifestyle in the most positive way. No pressure. No judgement. Just good information. And this January is no different. If you’re someone who thinks that Dubai is lacking in choices to better your every day wellbeing - think again. There are a ton of organisations, brands, groups, classes, products and more that will cater to everything from helping you to save money, spend your time wisely and to take care of your body. With that in mind, we’ve put together 9 Resolutions for 2019 (p15) some big, some small, others fun, and maybe even life-changing – all things that you can enjoy doing in Dubai over the next 12 months. From picking up a new skill to getting involved with charity work, there’s at least one thing that each of you can commit to doing for a better 2019! This month, the FACT globetrotters have been on a series of great adventures around the world. We bring you the hidden gem of Asia with a very special trip to Taiwan (p32). Have you stayed at Sheraton Grand Hotel, Dubai yet? Our latest staycation comes from the understated comfort and luxury of the sky-high 5-star hotspot with an enviable location on Sheikh Zayed Road (p39). Packed with exclusive Q&A's, the latest in fashion, food, tech, motoring and more - be sure to check out Jan's top-notch dining deals and openings alongside first-hand reviews and recommendations throughout the issue. The next few months are going to be busy in the FACT office as we plan the 2nd annual FACT Spa & Wellness Awards, ready to recognise all the amazing health, fitness and wellbeing offerings in the city – keep an eye out for the shortlist of nominees in our next issue and don’t forget to vote online for your favourites! The excitement for the new and final GoT season is REAL. I’m breaking all the rules this year and opting to live my best life away from resolutions and unrealistic expectations. My love for memes and Netflix continues.... Happy New Year everyone.☺

IF YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE HEAT… … get out of the kitchen! Fans of the world-famous Gordon Ramsay will be thrilled to learn that the celebrity chef has opened the Middle East’s first Hell’s Kitchen restaurant at Caesar’s Palace Bluewaters Dubai. GORDON RAMSAY’S HELL’S KITCHEN RESTAURANT makes its fiery debut in Dubai, marking the second global outpost and firstof-its-kind in the Middle East. Located at the brand new Caesars Palace Bluewaters Dubai, the destination dining experience is inspired by the international hit television show, and serves the same world-class cooking that made its Las Vegas counterpart a runaway success when it launched in January 2018. Created by the multi-Michelin starred chef, TV star and allround global celebrity Gordon Ramsay, the experiential and immersive destination restaurant is a must-see city attraction for tourists and GCC residents alike. Masterfully designed to create maximum drama, guests are transported to the studio set via interior flourishes such as the signature fiery pitchfork direct from the set and Hell’s Kitchen iconic “H” to pitchfork symbols cleverly featured in custom-designed, laser cut screen partitions and gold monogram wallpaper. Every detail, from the perfect plating to make each dish look just the same as on the television to stamped cutlery sourced direct from Las Vegas, make guests feel as if they are part of the hit series. “Fans of the show have been asking us to open a Hell’s Kitchen restaurant for a very long time and after the huge success of Hell’s Kitchen Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, I’m delighted to bring the magic to Dubai such a vibrant, exciting city,” said Gordon Ramsay. “As part of the Caesars Bluewaters Dubai resort, Hell’s Kitchen will bring a whole new level, flames and all, to an already buzzing food scene.” 10

With design features engaging all senses and a nod to both the red and blue teams featured on the show, the dynamic and bustling kitchen is the centerpiece of this unique eatery to be enjoyed and appreciated from every seat in the house. Chefs and cooks are kitted out in the exact Hell’s Kitchen show uniforms – red and blue jackets with coordinating bandanas – but with a key difference. While in the series outfits denoted male or female teams, at Hell’s Kitchen Dubai the jacket colours showcase which team member prepares what; team blue, is on cold starters and desserts, while the reds prepare the hot starters and main dishes. In charge of the dynamic kitchen team, Head Chef Craig Best leads under the guidance of Christina Wilson, winner of Hell’s Kitchen Season 10 and Executive Chef of Gordon Ramsay Restaurant Group. Open everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner, several of the most successful signature menu items featured on the television show and Hell’s Kitchen Las Vegas can be found at the Dubai venue. The restaurant is located on Dubai’s newest island oasis and part of Caesars Bluewaters Dubai, the first ever non-gaming resort from the legendary Caesars brand. ✤

Copper Chimney was founded by Mr JK Kapur, a prominent Bollywood filmmaker and avid food connoisseur. Mr JK Kapur left everything behind and migrated to India during the partition of India in 1947; 25 years after he first came to Bombay, he opened the first Copper Chimney in erstwhile Bombay in 1972. Since then, over the past 46 years, Copper Chimney has created bespoke recipes, dishes and cooking techniques from a variety of influences across undivided North India. 2 BREATHE LIGHTER This one goes out to all the smokers who really want to kick the habit but find it difficult to do so! Frankly, it’s time to quit smoking. To be fair, this should be on the top of everyone’s list all year round, but New Year does make for a perfect excuse. We know it’s easier said than done, but once you make that decision, it is truly not as hard as you may think! The toughest bit is breaking the habit and so it is a good idea to change up your routine by, for example, sitting somewhere you don’t usually smoke or taking up a new hobby that will keep you busy in free hours. Whether it’s binge-watching a new series on Netflix or sweating it out on the treadmill, trying out your cooking skills or even meditating – finding what makes you stop thinking about the nicotine rush is what’s important here. If you’re not up for going ‘cold turkey’, as they say, there is aid at hand. You could invest in some patches or gum, or head over to the Dubai Hypnosis Centre which helps you to tackle the emotional reliance on smoking (056 744 4908). We’d recommend visiting the Ministry of Health website to find out about possible smoking cessation clinics that offer free and effective methods for locals and expatriates to take advantage of.
3 DONATE
YOUR TIME
What better way to feed the soul and develop your character than by giving unselfishly to others? There are good causes aplenty to get involved with in Dubai. One that is fresh in everyone’s mind for their constant efforts is K9 Friends (www.k9friends.com), which is a fantastic animal shelter that rescues abandoned and stray dogs and is dedicated to providing a safe haven for them in the UAE until they can be placed in loving homes. There are a number of ways you can volunteer at K9 Friends, from working directly with the animals to helping out with events, admin and manning the office. One of our other favourites is the UAE Dolphin Project, a non-profit initiative dedicated to investigating the dolphin population along the UAE coastline, to provide scientific information and to support the conservation of these local marine species (www.uaedolphinproject.org/volunteering). If you want to go green this year and want some eco-friendly tips and tricks to better living in Dubai, keep up-to-date with the The Change Initiative (www.thechangeinitiative.com), the first shop in Dubai to sell only sustainable, environmentally-friendly products, where you can pop in and ask the staff on how you can make improvements to your home. Whether you want to look after children or would love to lend an ear to a cancer sufferer, there is a charity or group for everyone here. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for, why not start your own? fact magazine

4 BUILD SOME MAD SKILLS
We mean expand your talent repertoire by learning something new! A language, perhaps? Arabic should be a priority for all expats, and for this you can head to the long-standing The Arabic Language Centre (www.arabiclanguagecentre.com). But, there are plenty of other tongues to be mastered so check out what classes are available at Berlitz Language Centre (www.berlitz. ae) or the Pomegranate Institute (www.pomegranateinstitute. com) – to name a few. You could also learn traditional Arabic calligraphy in lessons at DUCTAC (www.ductac.org). But maybe arts is more your thing. There are so many activities to choose from, such as learning an instrument, singing, amateur dramatics or film and photography. Or, if you head to the Art Centre (www.artdubai.com), there is plenty to get creative with including crafts, design, pottery, sculpture and more. If you like to cook, on the other hand, amazing chefs around the country offer cooking classes and tasting sessions. To name just a couple of the places where this is offered at certain times of the year, keep an eye on the Raffles Dubai (04 314 9720) and the Waldorf Astoria The Palm, Dubai (04 818 2222) where chefs host group cooking classes with a sumptuous meal to follow. There is no end to the activities that are available to you in Dubai, so what are you waiting for?
5 TIGHTEN THE PURSE STRINGS Easier said than done in up-and-coming, pricey Dubai, but we promise it is doable! First of all, instead of going out and schmoozing all the time, why not have more soirees at home? Get a BBQ roaring and some music blasting, and you have a good night on the cards that doesn’t need to cost a week’s wage! Of course, one way to save lots of pennies is to stop eating out at lunch. Make it the night before and pack it up for tomorrow’s al-desko session. But, don’t let it be the end of your social life! There are many reasonably priced restaurants and bars to visit. For a cheap and cheerful dinner one of our favourites is Ravi Restaurant in Satwa (04 331 5353) with its simple dining set up and delicious array of traditional Pakistani and Indian fare. A whole meal for two here comes to around AED100 – AED150 for a generous amount of dishes. Another good place for tea and snacks is Filli Café which serves up some of the best karak with paratha rolls for under AED20 (www.fillicafe.com). Our favourite spots for a reasonable night out are The Irish Village (04 239 5000), Kicker’s in Dubai Sports City (04 282 4750), and Copper Dog at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel – JBR (04 5595 355). Don’t forget all the Happy Hours that run throughout the city every day - a fab way to save monies! 18

6 BANISH
THE BULGE
After a month of gorging, only the luckiest of souls will have little or no belly bulge. It’s inevitable, especially when you keep telling yourself ‘That’ll be my resolution!’ (every year). But it’s not a problem this time, as Dubai has plenty of options to get rid of that muffin top in no time. Firstly, you have to decide to adopt a new lifestyle, rather than going on a ‘diet’ for just a short amount of time. Just a dash of healthy eating and a dollop of good exercise will do the trick, and you’ll be amazed at how easy (and addictive) it is! You could join a gym or get involved with a team sport or, simply go for (at least) a half hour walk every evening. Then, make sure the pantry is guilt-free. If you’re not confident to take the plunge yourself at first, there are some places and people to help! VLCC Slimming Beauty Fitness (www. vlccwellness.com/UAE), for example, will assess your BMI (Body Mass Index) and then explore customised weight loss options with you. Or, Right Bite Nutrition Centre (www.rightbite.com) consultations will deliver meals that have been created just for you, straight to your door. So, go on then... no excuses!
SILK SPA, HABTOOR PALACE LXR HOTELS & RESORTS Discover services crafted with ancient techniques and scientific expertise. The separate ladies’ and gents’ areas have dedicated wet areas with steam and sauna facilities, two hammams, and a generous relaxation area. Banishing the bulge doesn’t have to be boring, in fact, it could be a lovely pamper session where the treatment is designed to aid your fitness goals. The 60-minute Restoring Body Wrap is one such therapy; the treatment starts with a dry body brushing to stimulate circulation and prepare the skin for the body mask designed to nourish and detox with ingredients of Algae and Kaolin Clay. Why not add a Hot Stone Shoulder and Scalp Massage, which includes a massage that focuses on the key areas of tension. Where needed, hot stones are also used to penetrate warmth and help ease aches and pains. GO: CALL (0)4 435 5500 FOR RESERVATIONS AND MORE INFORMATION.

7 HEALING
FROM WITHIN
To those unfamiliar with Reiki, it is a practice, otherwise known as a healing art, that originated in Japan developed by Dr Mikao Usui and works to promote self- healing on all levels – physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual. So what happens during a Reiki session? Well, every individual reacts differently to a treatment. It works by channeling energy to the body which enables it to eliminate toxins. Your Reiki master will places their hands on the recipient’s body, and from the sensation they feel, they’re able to gauge the level of toxins within your body. Although some may argue the treatments make no personal difference, Reiki is not designed to give instant relief and over a course of treatments, significant changes can be seen inside and out. Reiki is a gentle healing therapy which compliments medical and other holistic therapies. There are plenty of reiki practioners in Dubai who can perform the life-changing therapy on you or even offer coaching: we’d recommend Reiki with Lubi Dubai (www.reikiwithlubidubai. com), Miracle Wellness Centre (www.miraclesworldwide.com), and Illuminations Wellbeing Centre (www.illuminations.ae), which all offer reliable and certified guidance.
8 INDULGE IN THE ORGANIC WORLD While many people are reluctant to change, perhaps it’s time to take a risk and try something new, so why not start with your food? Organic food and, more specifically, plant-based diets have become HUGE in the health world. Organic food is produced using methods that do not involve modern synthetic inputs such as synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilisers. Although the farming movement arose in the 1940s in response to the industrialisation of agriculture known as the Green Revolution, organic food production has recently reached a peak of popularity. On top of this, vegan lifestyles are being adopted more and more by people who come to realise that going green on their plates is ultimately great for their bodies. Luckily, many major supermarkets in Dubai offer up good organic food sections, whilst those looking for something super fresh and dependable, check out Greenheart Organic Farms (www.greenheartuae.com) or Kibsons (www. kibsons.com) who deliver delicious organic groceries to your door. One of our favourites is Farmbox (www.farmbox.ae), where you can customise your own weekly box of fresh fruit and vegetables to be delivered straight to your address in a timely manner. You’ll also get the added bonus of a recipe blog in collaboration with Oscar & Jemima’s for healthy, yummy meal ideas. Organic & Real (www.organicandreal.com) is one of the UAE’s newer fresh food delivery services and offers all sorts of goodies, including gifting hampers, sustainable products and even superfoods, sauces, and a host of vegan produce. Going organic or simply cutting out meat for more fresh fruit and veggies on your plate, has never been as easy as it is in 2019! 20

9 LIVE YOUR
BEST LIFE
This is probably the most important resolution to make – and one that you should be living up to every single day. If you don’t feel quite happy no matter what you do, it is perhaps time to make some serious changes in your life.
Reinventing yourself can give you a whole new perspective on life and take you in directions you may never have dreamed were possible. Maybe you find solace in travelling and experiencing new cultures – invest some time and effort into planning and going on more trips, even if it’s just a local or regional staycation to clear your mind and recharge. Learn how to be more self-reliant; yes, we’re guilty of the convenience apps like Deliveroo and Uber, and nowadays you can even book people to clean your home or someone to drop off your groceries from the supermarket on the same road – technology offers all manners of useful tools and these things have made us somewhat spoiled. Brush up on your survival skills with a tech-free digital detox and become more independent and self-reliant. Face your fears and insecurities; you’ll find this particular point masked beneath other New Year’s resolutions, but fear and insecurity are often the cause of several problems that we want to address. You need to think of it as surviving and controlling your fear rather than overcoming it, and it will enable you to shed off a lot of the insecurities that you have. Unleash your creativity to avoid mental fatigue. Read more about music, arts, anything that peaks your interest and notice how you’ll come up with fresh ideas and think outside the box. As with anything else, there are many resources that help you spark your creativity in a number of different ways. Most of all, stick to the good healthy habits you’ve developed: the last, and most important point to mention is that all the positive changes you make have to be permanent. You will need to work on sticking with the good habits you have adopted, until they just become a natural part of who you are – after all, that’s true self-improvement.

CALL IT MAGIC THIS IS NOT YOUR AVERAGE HOCUS POCUS. BAHRAIN-BORN NABEEL BERA, A.K.A ONE WITH MAGIC, IS THE REAL DEAL WHEN IT COMES TO BLENDING EXCITEMENT AND TRICKS TOGETHER. FACT CAUGHT UP WITH THE DUBAI-BASED MODERN-DAY ENTERTAINER TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HIS MYSTICAL CONNECTION TO PERFORMING MAGIC… 22

Q&A •
Hi Nabeel! Let’s take it back to the beginning… how did your interest in magic start? As an eight-year-old kid in Bahrain, I learned a few card tricks and used to perform them all the time, everywhere. When I was 18, I went to London to attend university and decided to travel Europe, and I met a French Magician called Butzi in Barcelona who made a one euro coin disappear in his hands – that was the moment that sparked a fire of learning more about magic, which is still burning inside me. What exactly is the appeal of magic for you? Before it was about entertaining people and a little bit about getting attention, and it was a quick way of making people like me. But, now, working as a full-time professional magician for many years, the major appeal is that I live a very interesting life and I get to connect with all kinds of people and have interesting conversations. Do you remember the first magic show that you ever saw or experienced – what was your reaction? I was born and raised in Bahrain; there was no magic or professional magician there so I had to travel to Europe to discover magic. The magic trick Butzi showed was very simple – making a coin disappear – but it made me realise that there is more to magic than I know, which was only three card tricks at the time. Do you have a certain style of magic and why have you adopted this particular way of entertaining? After performing for many years I have learned that magic doesn’t have to be very difficult; it has to be smart, entertaining and memorable. I love performing psychological illusions and try my best to make magic meaningful and personal. As a magician, how do you deal with a tough crowd? You can tell a lot about a person from how they observe and react to a magic trick, which is fascinating for me. When this question of dealing with a tough crowd was asked to my favourite magician Dan Harlan, he answered by quoting a line from a song by Tom Waits: “Always keep a diamond on your mind” – so few people are not going to understand me and would be difficult to work with, and my job is more than fooling the crowd – it’s also entertaining them, and I, of course, always remember to keep a diamond on my mind! What percentage of the magic tricks in your repertoire is original as opposed to tricks other magicians have done? There is a song by a favourite rapper of mine, Nas, where he says: “no idea is original, there is nothing new under the sun, it’’s never what you do, but how its done” – so every trick has been done or a story has been told. The work goes into how I will do it. All great artists are standing in the shoulder of giants and I borrow a lot from great magicians but the persona, the premises for the magic effect and the artistic minutiae, which I add to the act, makes it different than others. fact magazine

• Q&A
Do you have a favourite magic trick – one that always proves a hit with your audience? On my stage show I give out a big envelope with the word “Prediction” written on it and ask people in the audience some questions and everything they say is hand written by me on a paper in the envelope opened by someone in the audience. What is the most challenging aspect of close up magic? These days it’s mobile phones. It’s hard to misdirect the unforgiving eye of camera which doesn’t blink and people can go home and watch it multiple times. But these are the times we live in and magic like any other art form evolves with time, so I have some tricks that work great for video too. What is the most rewarding part of being a magician? Creating magical memories for people and playing a role of a magician, and reminding people that life is full of surprises and mysteries. How has the Dubai scene reacted to your tricks – is their longevity and career potential to be a full-time magician? I am just a little kid from a small island in this city with BIG dreams, and Dubai is the place to dream BIG. There is an aspect to Dubai that you can be part of it, there is openness in its culture and people from all over the world are doing creative and interesting work here, which I am inspired by so yes there is a big potential here.
Of all the events you’ve worked as a magician – which remain your most memorable or inspiring? Performing for kids in a hospital in Bahrain where I was born. I have performed there twice and would love to perform there again as I am emotionally connected with that hospital. These kids were in the hospital for days and some of them for weeks so bringing a smile on their faces felt like winning millions of dinars; performing for them did make me feel that I have worked for a bigger purpose than just making myself look good or amazing and I had some sort of fulfilment, which I am seeking more with my work now. What are some of your future goals as a magician? I’m working on a TV pilot show and I want to use magic as a tool to tell stories and explore cultures and cities. These days, I am thinking about: what if Anthony Bourdain did magic? How would he create a TV show? Also I am planning a public stunt for next year, I did one this year live on Virgin Radio Dubai – I predicted the FIFA World Cup Final result and how the newspaper in Dubai will report it. I am working on something bigger which will take a year and hopefully I will have a chance to talk about it with you guys at Fact magazine! ✤

DJ, DROP THE BEAT! SHE HAD GUESTS PRAISING HER SKILLS ON THE DECKS AT THE FACT SPA & WELLNESS AWARDS ABU DHABI, WHERE SHE SPUN THE HOTTEST TUNES INTO THE NIGHT. MEET DJ KAT, A DUBAI-BASED MOVER, SHAKER AND ALL-ROUND BOSS LADY…
Let’s take it back… do you remember your first experience of listening to music and how it made you feel? This goes back to my childhood when my mother put headphones on my head and let me listen to Elvis Presley and Opera music, which were recorded on a cassette. A large contrast in styles, but this was the start of my musical career, as I could not stop my feet from moving. What inspired you to take to the decks and become a DJ? I used to dance professionally and often got distracted by DJs that were not playing within the same groove as the dancers. I believed I could do much better and from the first moment I touched the decks to try; I was sold. It directly felt like an extension of my soul and a way to share my constant growing passion for music. DJ’ing is all about skill and practice, how many years have you dedicated to perfecting this talent – and what have been some of the most challenging aspects? I always thought that I would be great at it from the start, because of my feeling for rhythm and my musical education, yet this bubble was burst very fast! The most challenging were the technical skills, which took me years to perfect and recording 10 hours of mixes every day in order to educate myself. I was very fortunate to have met some mentors who helped me to follow my dream and taught me the tricks of the game. What kind of music are you personally into – what’s on your playlist at the moment? My playlist is very extensive, yet my passion lays in groovy house music that carries vocals and tribal beats. I love to play music from unknown producers to trigger the mind of people that usually listen to radio hits. 26

• MUSIC Being a DJ can often mean late nights and irregular hours – how do you cope with the lifestyle? I am lucky that my partner has been working in nightlife for years which makes him understand the lifestyle very well. His support makes life much easier. I also make sure that I take time for myself to recharge, as performing the way I do demands a lot of energy. You’re a DJ in Dubai, one of the world’s most buzzing and competitive cities – tell us what people can expect from a set by DJ Kat? Groovy beats and an unstoppable energy that matches the buzz of Dubai! What’s your DJ’ing style – do you interact with the crowd and take a lot of requests or do you like to play it by ear and already know what you’ll spin before you start the set? As a DJ you need to be able to adapt your music to the ambience in the room and to changing circumstances; not one crowd is the same! I believe that preparing a set in advance means that you are not able to cope with this and are therefore, in my eyes, not a real DJ. What are the three best elements about being a DJ? l Bringing people together and getting constant energy from them l Learning something new about music during every performance (even from music I have known for years!) l To travel the world and share my love for music
Tell us more about your DJ’ing background – where else have you played and what has been your most memorable moment in this profession? I have played all around the U.A.E. with a great focus on Dubai, but have also travelled to places such as Russia, The Netherlands, Dominican Republic and Ibiza to play. This varies from private parties, to corporate events, but also boat parties and clubs. Though I’ve played at countless events, the best memory goes back to my first club performance, when I saw the full room moving to my beats. That feeling and energy is unforgettable! Do you have any advice or tips for young, budding DJs? l Work hard, play hard, but do not lose focus on your ideals l Always stay true to your own style and personality l Be aware of people that want to make use of your fame What are some of your future goals within the DJ’ing industry? The next step for me is to let the crowd enjoy my personal productions and let them explore a whole new world of music. I feel it is my responsibility to bring people together and give them an experience to remember. ✤

Staying true to who they are as a group, the sound is a modern update while keeping their classical harmonies intact. Major 90’s nostalgia here! ICARUS FALLS By Zayn
After blessing us with some breathtaking and catchy singles throughout 2018, Zayn Malik has finally released his second studio album. With Timbaland as one of its producers, Zayn’s latest release is a collection of the singer’s most raw and vulnerable work yet. Putting his intoxicating vocals at centre stage, Entertainer is punctuated by laidback synths and a minimalist, plaintive tone. The mid-tempo ballad is definitely one of Zayn’s best works yet and our new favourite! Coming a long way since his One Direction days, Zayn has truly grown and evolved as a singer. Let Me, a pure and smooth R&B track designed to tug on your heartstrings will make you feel all warm and fuzzy. Matching up gentle guitar chords with a subtle baseline and persistent synths, the song definitely displays the singer’s growth as a solo star. With the release of back-to-back chart topping hits, this has definitely been a big year in music for Zayn Malik. It’s no wonder that Icarus Falls is a mammoth record of 27 songs that highlight every single thought his fans have had in the two years and nine months since his debut release – we didn’t ask for this much love, but we’ll take it.

THE HISTORIAN The National Palace Museum Unleash your inner Indiana Jones at The National Palace Museum and explore an incredible selection of the finest Chinese art and artifacts. It’s a miracle to think that some of the most delicate porcelain, calligraphy and paintings made it to Taiwan from mainland China after surviving the ousting of the last Chinese emperor, an invasion by the Japanese and a cultural revolution! One of the most popular attractions is a tiny handcarved cabbage, specifically ‘bok choy’! It doesn't sound that exciting and it’s a little underwhelming, but props to the unknown sculptor - it took an incredible amount of skill to carve a tiny bok choy from one piece of jadeite, plus the story behind it has a little romance! Historians say that it was probably a gift for the emperor’s new wife symbolising purity and fertility. If using all that brain power has worked up an appetite there are some excellent choices for lunch; try Silks Palace for traditional Chinese cuisine with a modern touch and superb value for money. Liberty Square & Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall As you enter Liberty Square, the first thing that hits you is the magnitude of the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. Inside sits a gigantic statue of the man himself watched over by unflinching sentinels. One of the highlights of our visit was watching the changing of the guards, which happens on the hour, from 9am to 5pm. The former political and military leader of Taiwan, Chiang Kai-shek has a dedicated memorial that houses a museum documenting his life and career, offering a glimpse into the life of Taiwan’s longest serving leader. Mazu Temple There are a whopping 15,000 official temples in Taiwan, each of them is not only a local centre of faith but a living museum of folk art whose collections include exquisite stone carvings, colourful paintings and elaborate wood decorations. The Lugang Mazu Temple is an excellent example of this with some of the most exceptional artwork created by renowned masters. Dedicated to Chinese sea goddess Mazu, the temple is a national historic landmark, standing the test of time for over four hundred years! Visit during the daytime to observe worshippers peacefully going about their mantras and mudras amongst an aromatic haze of incense.
THE FOODIE Jiufen Old Street Tip #1: come hungry! Jiufen is known for its network of narrow alleyways, packed with teahouses, street food vendors and souvenir shops. The atmosphere is alive with droves of people politely shuffling up and down the crowded paths, dipping in and out of an eclectic variety of shops. It’s a sensory overload with smells, sights and sounds coming from all directions; most eateries showcase everything from food prep to cooking at the shop front, enticing passers by with curiosity and wafts of delicious fare. One of the most iconic Taiwanese treats that you’ll encounter are Tea Eggs. They taste a lot better than they look (picture partly cracked eggs in simmering brown water). The eggs are parboiled in strong tea and Chinese spices, giving the usually white egg a brown-marbled finish and unusual sweet and savoury taste. Feeling adventurous? How about snacking on some snails - not your regular garden variety - these slimey little suckers are as big as your fist! Wash it all down with your choice of savoury oolong tea or kitchy sweet bubble tea. Xing Yuan Tea Farm A true foodie not only loves the delight of eating but also appreciates the finer details of cultivation, food origin, and gastronomy. There are literally hundreds of tea farms in Taiwan, one of the best being the Xing Yuan Tea Farm in Yilan County. Enjoy harvesting, dehydrating, rolling and drying your very own Oolong tea. While your hand-picked leaves are crisping up in the industrial dryer, put your feet up and feast on a teainspired lunch. The grounds of the park have been landscaped beautifully, and, if you’re lucky enough to visit during the Sakura (cherry blossom) season between January and March, you’ll be in for a treat! Shifen Sky Lantern The age-old tradition of releasing lanterns into the sky was once used as a signaling system before modern day communications; today sky lanterns are used in festivities all over the world. Each year, between February and March, Taiwan celebrates this deep-rooted folk culture during the prestigious Taiwan Lantern Festival. Visitors are in for a sensory treat with high-tech lantern displays, traditional Aboriginal dance performances, music and art. If you want to experience this historic custom first hand, we recommend you head up to Shifen Old Street, located in Pingxi District of New Taipei. This is the only area of Taiwan where sky lanterns are allowed to be released due to its sparse population and high altitude. This small town has become a magnet for locals and tourists with its network of alleys around one of the old rail tracks lined with sky lantern sellers, souvenir shops and eateries. Pick up your very own sky lantern for about 20 dirhams, paint on a personalised message, wish or prayer and the vendor will help you to release it into the sky! ✤

DYNAMIC DRIVING: ALL-NEW BMW X5 The founding father of the X-model family, BMW has surpassed many motoring expectations with the all-new BMW X5. FACT takes the eye-catching SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) out onto the UAE roads for a spin…

S
till maintaining the core values and characteristics of what was the first-ever SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle), the 2019 BMW X5 appears to have really grown up. Eye-catching off-road attributes and assured performance on rough ground combined with the premium specifications and signature dynamics of a BMW - this was the blueprint with which BMW launched the all-new SAV two decades ago – and now, the boss is back with a vengeance, reclaiming its market-leading position in the premium all-wheel drive segment. From the moment we step into the car, one thing is for sure; it is larger in length, height and width, offering more space that is both practical and luxurious. The new wheelbase is 42mm longer than its predecessor’s (now 2975mm), a 36mm increase in vehicle length (to 4922mm), an extra 66mm of width (now 2004mm) and a 19mm increase in height (to 1745mm) give the new BMW X5 both an imposing appearance and generous levels of space for passengers and their luggage. Up to seven seats of family convenience but without sacrificing the driving feel that the X5 has always been known for, this car isn’t pretending to be an off-roader meets style – it IS just that in reality. The muscular, athletic stance the car takes, definitely turns heads – something that BMW X5 enthusiasts will appreciate, especially as many wanted something more aggressive and rugged to match up to its competitors, such as the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Volvo XC90. Evidently, the all-new BMW X5 is designed to be more robust and hold authority and assurance on the roads. A powerfully sculpted bonnet, a short front overhang, lightly hexagonal wheel arches and the dynamic sweep of the roofline add to the sporty yet strong character of the new X5. The most striking feature of the front end is the large BMW kidney grille with single-piece surround. LED adaptive headlights are standard, but you can have striking BMW Laserlights instead as an option. This system employs a BMW Laserlight spotlight with Selective Beam to optimise the high beam function, and as a result, even in the daytime you can spot them by virtue of a blue X-shaped trim inside the headlight clusters, in the range of the non-dazzling high beam has been increased to around 1,600 feet. Pretty impressive for when you’re tackling the long drives on UAE highways. The precise character line in the car's flanks, which rises up at the rear door, contributes to the modern appearance of the new X5. It defines the car’s powerful shoulders and feeds into the rear lights, which extend well into the flanks. All the lights feature LED technology in the rear too. The all-new BMW X5 also comes with a bevy of innovative features inside. The interior exudes a classy and modern aura thanks to sophisticated materials, harmonious design and an innovative control concept. The instrument panel is broken up by sweeping horizontal lines, which combine with classy electroplated trim elements to emphasise the width of the interior. The centre console rises up to the instrument panel so as to give easier access to the standard cubbyholes, while enhancing the feeling of space up front. The whole set up falls on the very handsome side of luxury. Most of all, the raised seating position, driver-focused cockpit and new design and arrangement of the controls offer the driver a more focused view of the road alongside ultimate control when driving – and we definitely need more of that here! 46

Inside, the BMW X5, the carefully selected materials in the interior include the new Vernasca variant for the standard leather upholstery, available in a variety of five colours. It is fitted as standard with electrically adjustable and heated sports seats. Customers can also specify optional multifunction seats with massage function and seat ventilation for the driver and front passenger – pure creature comforts that we’ve become accustomed to, even whilst driving, in the UAE. There’s a four-zone climate control, a panoramic glass roof now 30-percent larger than the old car, and standard ambient lighting with a pleasant “Welcome Light Carpet” that illuminates the entry areas when the doors are unlocked. The optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System – with its output of 1,500 watts spread across 20 speakers – is suitably loud and thoroughly crisp. This was a real treat for us as drivers who love to have our favourite playlist on loud. A rear-seat entertainment system with a pair of 10.2-inch touchscreen displays with USB ports, a DVD player, and an HDMI socket is optional, and almost certain to keep the kids (young and old) occupied on longer drives. Ok, let’s get to one of our favourite and most practical features, one that is perfect for anyone who likes to take road trips or weekend staycations. The two-section tailgate, for easier loading and unloading, is a real bonus; tick the options box for the Comfort Access feature, meanwhile, and you can open or close both sections of the tailgate without lifting a finger. Throw in the optional Luggage Compartment package, and the cargo area can even lower itself automatically into the floor. As standard you get seating for five, but if you opt for seven seats then the third row gets electric adjustment, too. It’s all up to you! The design principle underpinning the chassis – based on a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle – also ticks all the right boxes for supreme traction on rough terrain, coupled with excellent dynamic responses and ride comfort in road driving. The two-axle air suspension, underguard at the front and rear, plus specific displays in

the instrument cluster and control display, all aid in the driving experience. There’s a choice of four driving modes available at the touch of a button. Ride height and the responses of BMW xDrive, DSC, the transmission and the accelerator are adjusted to give an optimum set-up for driving on sand, rock, gravel or snow – equally excellent for trips into the desert and up the mountains. Under the hood, power comes courtesy of a 3.0-litre inline six cylinder turbocharged motor in the BMW X5 xDrive40i. It’s good for 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque, which arrives between 1,500 rpm and 5,200 rpm. As a result, the new X5 can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. For those looking for more power from their SAV, the BMW X5 xDrive50i upgrades to a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, complete with 456 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. There’s enough rumble to tow a large trailer or a medium-sized boat – ideal for weekend holidaymakers. There is much to celebrate about the all-new BMW X5. As far as the premium sporty SUV market is concerend, BMW assures drivers that it well and truly is still in the game. Handling is smooth, there is minimal road noise in the cabin and there is a sturdiness and tenacity that gives the driver immediate confidence when getting behind the wheel of the all-new BMW X5. Its road capabilities and mechanical upgrades allow it to fulfil off-road duties as well as every day driving. This is a car made for urban settings, refined driving and anyone who appreciates the finer side of motoring. ✤

The GoPro Hero 7 Black comes with the same kind of rugged and rubbered body as the Hero 6 Black. The new model is also more smartphone like in its operations, with simple directional swipes to access different modes, captured footage/images and more. While you can still alternate between shooting modes with a press of the Mode button on the side, but you can also swipe to do the same. Developed in response to user feedback, it is ideal for anyone who finds using a gimbal inconvenient. Another great new option on the GoPro Hero7 Black is SuperPhoto, similar to a scene-intelligent auto option on a more conventional camera. It automates a handful of helpful features that you may not think to enable when taking pictures. For those who want a more
customised approach when getting creative, ProTune will give you freedom to adjust things like exposure compensation, white balance, ISO range, sharpness and so on. The device is compatible with the ios and Android GoPro and Quik apps, and this enables you to transfer images to your phone, capture portrait-orientation images and upload it straight to Instagram stories as well as add music, effects and stickers. CITY BRUNCHIN’ With brunch having become such an institution, the notion of a global feast overlooking the new Dubai Water Canal certainly piqued David Tapley’s interest as he arrived at the charming Hilton Dubai Al Habtoor City for a mammoth dining experience…
F
riday afternoons in the UAE are often associated with brunch, yet brunch in this part of the world is not the hybrid meal that lies somewhere between breakfast and lunch with which the terminology is often associated. Instead, diners are treated to an all out assault of the senses offering an unlimited array of food and drink that is bound to leave even the most seasoned of brunchers in a self-induced food coma for the remainder of the day. Dubai has long been described as a melting pot of cultures, from the people to the food and this idea is reflected in the international dishes offered at the aptly named City Brunch, situated within the light and airy all-day-dining restaurant, The Market. It’s a sprawling restaurant of marble floors and extravagant drapes, upholstered in vibrant green, white and turquoise hues which give the impression of dining beneath an elaborate circus tent. Tables are well configured with livecooking stations and counters laden with produce used to break up the large space. For larger parties, pockets of privacy can be found within a number of intimate dining alcoves. On arrival, we’re greeted with smiles and genuine warmth that carries through our entire dining experience. Predominantly buffet, the City Brunch boasts an impressive spread that takes diners on a culinary journey around the globe. Beginning with the Arabic section where you can enjoy tender shish tawook and beautifully crisp fatayer, before moving through to an expansive Indian corner packed full of pani puri, freshly made naan breads and a particularly impressive dal makani. A short hop through to South East Asia brings together many of our brunch favourites including Peking duck pancakes, hand-pulled noodles in a rich coconut broth and plenty of dim sum! Whether it’s char siu or siu mai you’re after, it’s unlikely you’ll be disappointed.

Most impressive is the sushi counter, featuring a good selection of nigiri and maki rolls in various flavour combinations, yet it’s the sashimi that truly impresses with the thick slices presented within the fish itself! It may be a little too much for some, but the presentation is innovative and a definite talking point of the brunch. The City Brunch can also proudly boast the title of most condiments and accompaniments on a carvery station in Dubai. Aside from the ample meat selection (14 hour slow-cooked beef, prime rib, chicken, lamb, salmon en croute and short ribs) the number of vegetables, sauces and gravies is quite astounding - covering everything from the expected horseradish sauce through to herb jus, Brussels sprouts, Yorkshire puddings, sweet potato fries and everything in between. British expats will surely love this element of the brunch as it provides a real taste of home. With such an expansive selection of food, we’re impressed to discover the seafood section where fresh crustaceans such as whole lobster and king crab legs are displayed upon ice and within wooden buckets. Oysters are freshly-shucked upon request but this particular brunch is not all about indulgence.

The ability to construct your own salad offers much appeal, as do the premium ingredients. With burrata cheese, quinoa and asparagus spears being just some of the enticing ingredients offered. A cheese room again presents an overwhelming choice, though the cheese deteriorates quickly during the course of brunch leaving a melted mess by the time we venture up after dessert. Speaking of desserts, the team at Hilton Dubai Al Habtoor City have managed to achieve both quantity and quality with a small hot section boasting a sticky toffee pudding and Middle Eastern favourite of Umm Ali, before transitioning through to the cold desserts of tiramisu, trifles and ice creams, and the sweet shop with its fizzy cola bottles and fluffy marshmallows. The dessert counters are virtually heaving under the weight of all the cakes and cookies, each carefully constructed and adorned with edible gold – and we’re not complaining! Service is snappy and particularly friendly, with children’s' wants and needs exceptionally well catered too. There’s a live DJ who manages to create a fun atmosphere (no easy task considering the size of the venue) with his mix of club classics and early 90s R&B, bound to bring on pangs of nostalgia. What the City Brunch manages to do so well is offer mass-market appeal. With such an impressive selection of food and beverages and a pleasing kids area, there really is something to suit everyone. ✤

GENIUS GASTRONOMY Following a refurbishment during the summer of 2018, which brought life to what was a relatively non-descript space in its previous guise; Tresind is back with a surprise! Situated at the rear of the restaurant lies a white and unassuming door, behind which lies Tresind Studio, a 20-seat private dining room in which the culinary team of proficient staff have created a dining experience quite unlike anything else. T
resind has set the bar high when it comes to Indian dining in Dubai. Its post-modern take on the cuisine of the Indian subcontinent utilises bold flavour combinations, playful plating, innovative beverage pairings and table-side theatrics but none of this results in gimmickry, for the food is front and centre of the Tresind experience. Having broken down barriers when it comes to the perception of Indian fine-dining, each new menu (or season) at Tresind has allowed the restaurant to reinvent itself, upping the ante on each occasion to a point where it felt as if there was nowhere left to go for the popular dining spot in the Nassima Royal Hotel. Entering into the compact Tresind Studio, the feel is very different to that of the main restaurant space. White walls give the impression of an art gallery, allowing the food to remain the focus at all times, though pops of colour can be found in the yellow upholstery and the skyline views of Sheikh Zayed Road and the towering remains of its skyscrapers. Chapter One: The Journey is the name given to the 16-course tasting menu that has been developed to launch Tresind Studio, reinventing some of the classic dishes from both Tresind and Carnival, while also adding some exciting new additions into the mix. It wouldn’t be Tresind without a unique take on pani puri and the first course reinterprets the dish from Carnival’s third season, presenting a multi-textured dish in a bowl constructed from ice, bursting with flavours and elevated by just a touch of sweetness via the inclusion of tamarind. While Indian cuisine is renowned for bread, the only time it appears at Tresind Studio is with the arrival of the second course, a small disc of crisp chickpea roti accompanied by a quenelle of freshly churned butter that is simplicity at its best. The bread course is followed in quick succession by chaat, a complete surprise given how many times the popular street food snack has been re-interpreted, refined and presented to Tresind’s guests over the years. This time around it’s in the form of canapé-sized tartlets presented on a striking gold plate, which are both bold in terms of flavour and visual presentation. Chef’s Himanshu’s mushroom chai is easily one of his most popular creations (it still remains our favourite dish) and the dish which was formerly served out of a porcelain teapot like a cup of chai has been improved even further within the confines of the studio. This time we’re treated to a mushroom stuffed ravioli served with a rich and flavoursome mushroom consommé that we fact magazine

can easily see making its way onto our list of 2018’s best dishes - this is course number four. The white-fleshed John Dory forms the basis of the fish courses and is served upon a rice cracker to represent the traditional Indian dish of rice and fish, while the cracker brings a nice texture; it’s the punchy accompaniment of mustard that really brings this fifth course together. A Goan preparation of curried chicken follows next, presented upon a lightly tempura’d shisho leaf before segueing into course seven, a delightful combination of prawn, watermelon and feta cheese that presents a slight floral element from the marigold into this South Indian rasam soup made with clarified butter. Course eight is another highlight and brings together a black pepper lamb chop served alongside a guacamole stuffed dosa, with yellow gunpowder and curry leaf powder. The tender tandoor-cooked lamb slathered in a black pepper masala is a dish that has really made its mark and has already become a firm favourite since Tresind Studio’s inception. An exciting palate cleanser brings the underused ingredient of buckthorn to the fore, served inside scallop shells on-top of a chunk of coral and adorned with popping candy, the dish does more than neutralise the palate, it becomes a talking point throughout the restaurant and it’s pleasing to note the gasps of delight as a course like this touches down on each diners’ table, re-emphasising the fact that food is indeed emotive. Colour combinations come into play with the arrival of a Wagyu steak accompanied by a tasting of five curries, meaning each bite presents a different range of flavours – our favourite was the rosemary and the biryani, though it must be said that we found this course to be the least honed, with two of the curries being quite forgettable. The eleventh course is the final savoury course and while we’d become accustomed to table-side plating during the dining experience, we were personally invited into the kitchen for this particular show-stopper. The khichdi is a rice and lentil dish eaten throughout India and here the team pays homage to India’s National Dish. Presented upon a visual representation of the country, lay 29 individual ingredients (one for each state) that are explained before being added into the hearty khichdi mix, providing diners with not only a vast range of spices and flavours but an education in Indian geography and cuisine at the same time. Our pre-dessert of coconut pudding and pineapple carpaccio feels almost ceremonial and is presented Thali-style upon a banana leaf alongside poppadom crisps and a savoury pickle. combinations could result in a divisive dish for diners but for us it was truly appreciated. The chocolate and cherry dish that follows is a crowd-favourite and a re-invented version of Tresind’s black forest dessert. A trio of desserts end the meal in a playful fashion with a sweet saffron and milk cake served beneath a camera lens that allows diners to magnify the dish. We were then treated to a wooden box stuffed with delightful petit fours (if you only have room for one make it the paan bonbon) providing an accompaniment to the final course of tea, served from an ornate silver urn - the choice of blends is seemingly endless. Service has always been a strong point at Tresind and here inside the Willy Wonka-esque Studio, much like the food, the service has been taken up a notch. Staff is attentive and friendly and the result is one of the most well rounded dining experiences you can have in the city. The price point is even more impressive, at AED450 for the vegetarian menu and AED475 for the non-vegetarian menu Tresind Studio also represents exceptional value for money. We can’t wait to see what comes next. ✤

BLISSFUL REMINDERS We’ve experienced our fair share of spas in Dubai so it comes as no surprise that it takes something really extraordinary to wow us. Nowadays, the wellness voyage of any spa visit needs to go beyond just a good treatment, and FACT’s Shabana Adam has found just the place. his award-winning spa is by far one of the biggest I’ve ever seen. Sprawled out across 760sqm of serene space, it’s easy to forget that the world’s tallest building and the bustling downtown area make up the unreal views right outside the windows of this relaxation haven – you’ll feel like you’re having a secret escape and nobody beyond the spa walls knows about it! Welcomed with a lime and lavender drink and cold towel, I fill in a simple consultation form before being ushered to hop into a comfy robe and slippers. The changing rooms and wet area are bigger than most luxury spas I’ve encountered in the UAE. With the feeling of a large but cosy home, it would be wise to arrive a little ahead of your appointment so that you can enjoy the invigorating steam room, sauna and jacuzzi as well as the experience showers. I’m here for a voyage of sorts – the 120-minute Balinese Journey. A results-driven treatment that not only sounds like just what the doctor ordered but is made up of three different elements that harmoniously bring together my favourite therapies into one excursion: there’s a scrub, a wrap and a massage - charming! The therapist explains that the first part of the treatment is ideal for those with sensitive, normal to dry skin. Step one: we begin with a coconut scrub while scents of frangipani and lotus fill the air. The scrub is rubbed all over the body and

The therapist is vigorous in her application and I already can’t wait to see (and feel) the smooth results. The scrub is then wiped off with hot towels, preparing the skin for step two. The spa bed is adjusted to my comfort and I’m soon covered in warm, soothing rhassoul clay which is applied all over the body. Then comes the best part; you’ll be wrapped up in a sheet as thin as cling film and covered in multiple blankets – it’s a lovely warm cocoon that is made extra special as the therapist performs a head massage which sends me into an easy sleep. So far, so good. I’m up and out of the blissful shell for a hot shower to wash off the clay. Soft, supple skin and a healthy texture are revealed. I’m SO ready for this massage. Requesting medium to firm pressure, the technique of Balinese massage involves relaxing and reenergising strokes along with spirited stretches. If you’re someone who works in a stressful environment or if you spend a considerable amount of time in front of a computer or any desk job for that matter, the chances are that this massage will be highly effective in easing muscle tension, loosening up your posture and tight knots, and generally making you feel revived and restored – all those things that you want from a great spa treatment. Of course, it’ll be hard not to nod off again – but you’ll wake up to find a hot neck pillow, woolly blanket, hot “euphoria” tea and dried fruit and dates waiting for you in the chilled out relaxation lounge. Serious points for aftercare! As I leave The Spa at Address Boulevard, I can’t help but think about how much I want to share this two-hour escapade with everyone, how much I want this to be their little secret relaxation hotspot too, and how much I want them to experience the perfect coming together of luxury and wellbeing that will remind every guest how important it is to take care of and treat yourself. ✤

FRESH FACED Breathe life back into your skin and wash away the effects of harsh winter weather with a refreshing Cure Detox Facial at the award-winning Mandara Spa. FACT’s Shabana Adam went to experience the talked-about treatment by the gurus of skincare at Natura Bissé …
I
t has been a while since I've had a facial. At least over a year – crazy, right? It’s all because of the Sephora sheet masks – the idea and ritual of a facial has now become one that involves lounging with takeout food in front of Netflix. I’m here to remind you why it should be so much more than that. To begin, going to a spa for a facial already means upgrading your me-time to something more special. And going to Mandara Spa elevates this further. Located at The H Dubai, everything about this spa is complete zen and subdued luxury. There’s an urban feel that blends seamlessly with a relaxing vibe; you’re encouraged to come early and enjoy the hydro facilities including steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and experience showers, providing you with the ultimate spa journey. I’m here for the 17-step, 75-minute Cure Detox Facial by Natura Bissé. I’m rocking the typical winter complexion of combination skin; sometimes oily, sometimes dry – I just can’t win in this weather. My therapist informs me that this facial is super results-driven and aims to restore balance back into your skin. I’m familiar with Natura Bissé, the Spanish company embodies sophisticated elegance, efficiency and feminine intuition through the use of avant-garde technologies and extraordinarily high concentrations of superior quality ingredients. This facial is no exception. We begin with a welcome touch of aroma nectar which leads to a thorough cleanse, followed by a wipe down with the hydrogel toner. Next, an application of the enzyme pre-therapy tingles the skin a little – but this is a good sign – the formula is working its
magic. Exfoliation with 3GP follows and I feel like all the invisible dirt that has built up as a result of environmental factors, use of make up and general wear and tear is scrubbed off to reveal skin that can breathe. Tone again with hydrogel and then comes the second application of the enzyme pre-therapy, followed by what some may believe to be the most uncomfortable part of a facial; steam and extraction to open pores. In my opinion, it’s one of the most cathartic and rewarding parts of a facial – my therapist really works out any visible and difficult to spot blackheads and whiteheads, trailed by another go of the enzyme pre-therapy and hydrogel toner. At this point, I felt a noticeable lightness to the skin. Next up, a post therapy with cure botanical which also involves a light massage on the face and décolleté – it’s simply blissful and I’m in a nimble slumber, fast. Things get gentle and more relaxing with another few applications of the hydrogel toner breaking up a few other parts of the facial including a mask with cure instant therapy (it also tingles!) with a hand massage, and all is topped off with the application of essential shock intense cream on the eyes and lips as well as the cure sheer cream on the face and décolleté. The treatment ends with a closing touch of aroma nectar. Full circle – only now, my face looks and feels supple with a glow from its newfound confidence. Facials are a tough one. After the initial day, most results wear off. Not this one – its plumpness and noticeable healthy boost lasts for days and just like that Mandara Spa and Natura Bissé have restored my faith in visiting a spa for a facial and not just doing a half-hearted job of it at home! ✤

THE CULT OF PELOTON As far as life’s challenges go in Dubai, we're convinced that trying to book onto a spin class is amongst one of the greatest that many fitness buffs face. Fear not – we’ve got an alternative just for you. The kitted-out facilities at The H Dubai include a very cool Peloton Bike Studio alongside a Les Mills Virtual room – both offering energy and privacy in one.
I
f you're new to the fitness fad that is Peloton, here’s a brief intro: The Peloton studio contains some of the world’s most interactive bicycle equipment. You can now measure the effectiveness of your ride using defined resistance and specific cadence. An instructor pushes you with guidance, energising music and a variety of themed workouts. You can also compete with riders from all over the world as you climb your way to the top of the leader board. It’s true that fitness is changing. People are busier, time is more sacred and folks in Dubai are looking for something that fits around their schedule – not the other way round. The great thing about Peloton is that it delivers the same intensity of a real-life, instructor-led class workout, but at the convenience of your own time. It’s simple, book the Peloton studio for use at a time that suits you, hop on the carbon steel bike, with a 22-inch display and headphones, and choose your workout. There are lots of live classes to join in with, or there are thousands of on-demand classes and scenic cycling routes to launch into as well. The platform has found popularity with around one million users so far, a group that also includes the likes of Hugh Jackman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michelle Obama, Ellen DeGeneres and more A-listers than we can type. Maybe they can't find a space at their local class, either? The sweat-proof Peloton screen is super user-friendly and intuitive. You can select classes by instructor, intensity, music genre (which, if you’re wondering, totally includes 90’s pop music) or the length of the class, ranging from 30 to 120 minutes. It’s not just cycling, either, with some dedicated to strength, stretching and other forms of cardio training. The friendly staff at The H Dubai will be more than happy to strap you into the pedals and take you through how the bike works. And once your chosen class is underway, simply listening along to the music is enough to keep you going, but you’re also given an extra motivation push by fellow cyclists and a live leaderboard which sits on the right of the screen. At the bottom of the screen, you’ll find the power, cadence and resistance metrics which dictate the class all live. If you fall for the Peloton workout, chances are that you’ll keep coming back to measure your metrics, achievements and personal bests – it’s like dedicating yourself to a fitness career. As far as virtual exercising goes, Peloton is sophisticated, professional and completely engaging. If you’re visiting for the Peloton, it would also be worthwhile to check out the Les Mills Virtual room - the newest innovation from global group fitness provider of the same name. This is a video-based offering that enables fitness beginners and enthusiasts alike to take part in a variety of classes at just the touch of a button. Classes include Body Balance, Body Combat, Body Pump, CXWork and Sh’bam. Lucky for all you who want to try something a little more intimate, personalised and results-driven this year, Les Mills Virtual at The H Dubai would be a great place to start. Virtual workouts combine world-leading fitness programmes with pumping sound and motivation from some of the hottest instructors on the planet. It’s a truly inspiring experience that will complement your workout and drive amazing results. ✤
