2020: Get Tight and Get Right...

Nothing in the universe can stop you from letting go and starting over.” - Guy Finley

A

whole new decade… who’s ready for 2020? Not only are we in a leap year – there’s something rather fun about that extra day in February, right? – but this is also the year of so many incredible happenings here in the UAE. But before we delve into the Expo 2020 excitement, let’s talk about memes. In the lead up to NYE, our Instagram feeds here at FACT were filled with all kinds of inspirational, motivational and down-right laughable memes, all expressing new life mottos and renewed positive thinking to catapult us all into a better New Year. Personally, I don’t mind these small bites of mantra: “Your Life is Beautiful, Even When it’s Not Perfect” – or how about “Where’s my Oscar For Acting Like Everything is Fine” – and my very favourite that shows Jerry the cartoon mouse relaxing with his feet up and the very straight-to-the-point words “Bad Vibes, Get Off Me” sprawled across the picture. Surely, you’ve double tapped and saved some of these for a future rainy day when you might need a little reminder or boost to breathe and take a moment for yourself. So, in true meme style, we’re setting ourselves up for the best year yet. After plenty of conversations in the office and with friends, we’ve come to realise that a lot of us still haven’t experienced so many of the cool events, cultural sites, hidden nooks, and insta-worthy activities in the UAE. I’ve never been to Hatta, or spent the weekend in a desert resort – two things that are on our list of 20 for 2020 starting on p27. Call it a UAE bucket list, or call it 20 new ideas for a more entertaining year ahead. Let us know if we missed any of your favourite places! The food scene in Dubai is a continuous whirlwind of innovative concepts and yummy cuisines – our January issue is dedicated to just some of these places. From brunches to ladies' nights, special menus and everything in between, you’ll find all the culinary inspo you need to make sure that 2020 starts off on an epicurean high. The next 12 months are going to be filled with ALL the fun - awards season, competition campaigns, fabulous events and some of the UAE's upcoming feats. We're ready for it! And if you find yourself slipping off into unproductive mode, just open up instagram and find that one meme that speaks to you - even if it is a cartoon mouse. Happy New Year all! ☺

GRILLS AND TANGO Argentina Grill, the trendy and artistic Argentinean restaurant located at The Pointe, Palm Jumeirah, is branching out to the bustling beachfront of La Mer. THIS EATERY EXUDES THE true ethos of Argentina not only through the asado cooking methods used, but also through the vibrant artwork and Latin-American music that brings the venue to life. As the design and layout of the restaurant draws inspiration from cubism and suprematism, the interior is left resembling a piece of art on its own and it’s worth stopping by just to admire the visuals. The kitchen, boasting three Argentinean parrillas, a Josper and the largest meat ripening chamber in Dubai, guarantees that diners will be gifted with a unique and authentic dining experience. All meat is cooked according to the asado-culture of preparing food at the coals; an entire ritual and philosophy of eating in Argentina. The menu at Argentina Grill is broad and offers a vast selection of delectable dishes besides meat, including a range of salads, seafood, soups, side dishes, vegetables and fruits. Being kings of the grill, each and every meal is prepared on parillas to produce mouth-watering flavours unique to Argentina. Historically, Argentinean cooking is an amalgamation of Italian and Spanish

cuisines, so guests unfamiliar with Argentinean dishes are sure to find something on the menu they recognise. Coupled with the promise of fantastic food is an animated atmosphere. The eccentric light projections at the restaurant change the mood from cosy and comfortable to energetic and vivacious during the evening. After indulging in some dessert and perhaps a few beverages from the Argentinean drinks’ selection, tango the night away as a Latin-American party takes place every day from 8pm to 10pm. A visit to the new Argentina Grill at La Mer guarantees an expansive view of the Dubai skyline and sea, which can be savoured while treating the mind and body to an unforgettable culinary voyage to Latin-America. ✤

Cementing his position as a versatile British cultural figure, Heavy Is the Head is a drastic yet amazingly impressive step up from his debut album. While testing himself artistically, the album reminds us who Stormzy really is beneath all that fame, while still allowing him to mature and evolve. Reflecting a lot of Grime and hip-hop, “Vossi Bop” mixes things up by talking abut everything from recognition and confidence to taking shots at politicians. A super infectious bop, the track sees Stormzy experimenting with trap while also slipping in some social commentary. resh and vibrant, Voco Dubai is an IHG hotel that introduces guests to another side of the hospitality giant. Located on Sheikh Zayed Road, taking prime position close to a number of tourist hotspots including the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall just a short drive away. From the moment we step through its doors, Voco exudes a sense of effortless comfort and convenience. On first impressions we find the staff at Voco to be warm and welcoming. We’re quickly taken up to the lounge for a private check-in, as is customary for all suite guests. We’re given a couple of packs with locally-made dates as a welcome – a sweet gesture that brings in a sense of place for guests in the yummiest way. Check-in is quick and simple, and we’re issued a key in mere minutes – efficiency is definitely at the forefront here.

BEST NIGHT’S SLEEP

What makes the accommodation at Voco Dubai stand out is all the little playful touches and thoughtful details. All of the 471 guestrooms have been recently refurbished with modern décor and considerate extras that make for a comfortable stay. The one-bedroom suite is designed with floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing the hotel’s location in the heart of the city. Sweeping views over Dubai are a fabulous sight especially at sunset. The suite is all about space. Divided into two separate parts, what we really love is the number of different nooks that you can settle into. Whether you’re here on business, leaisure, or a personal staycation, there is ample space to spread out. A huge and very cosy chaise longue is the exact place to curl up with a hot cuppa and Netflix, whilst a practical workspace makes for the ideal spot to check emails and get a little bit of work done. Enjoy a deep soak in the sunken bath tub, surrounded by an invigorating aerated shower accompanied by Aveda amenities, right before you hit the couch and put your feet up with room service and a film on the largescreen smart TV to chill in front of. Now, we’ve stayed in hundreds of hotels, but never have we experienced the most restful night’s sleep as we did at Voco Dubai. The super comfy new beds are covered in crisp white linens, perfectly plumped duvets and pillows that guarantee (and we can vouch for this) a refreshing night’s sleep. There’s even a walk-in wardrobe with plenty of room for several outfits if you’re heading for a night out in the city! The elegant suite with its lounge vibe is perfect for couples, small families and groups of friends. Choose your favourite outfit from the walk-in wardrobe before heading for a night out in the city that never sleeps.

he interior of The Westin City Centre Bahrain is sumptuous and modern with lavish crushed velvet fabrics adorning cushions and an array of carefully crafted furniture. Throughout the hotel different levels and styles of illumination create an air of extravagance in the entertaining spaces and tranquillity and intimacy in the lounge areas. The décor is a clever blend of polished woods, tiles, panelling and ornate chandeliers. The cutting-edge contemporary design is executed perfectly to create a sense of luxuriant escapism. This sense of splendour struck us immediately as our car was whisked away by valet. We entered and were offered a refreshingly fruity trio of welcome drinks which resembled a heavenly elixir to kick start our staycation experience. The hotel takes a holistic, bespoke approach towards guests’ wellbeing which was evident as we checked in smoothly and sashayed to our Executive Room. The platter of treats presented to us reflected the attention to detail and personal knowledge of every guest. Chocolates of all kinds satisfy our sweet tooth! The in-room amenities ensure that no two stays are alike but are customised to indulge the cravings, style and eccentricities of guests from arrival to departure. Generously designed, the room features modern furnishings, rich textures and subtle hues and is available with twin or king size beds. Promising a high degree of subtle sophistication, the rooms here are a perfect retreat for the business or leisure traveller. Aside from this, the ambient lighting, crisp tiled edges in the heavenly bathroom and thoughtfully selected accessories from the signature White Tea range are designed to create a sense of mindfulness and bodhi whilst ensuring that all necessary links with the outside world are at hand should you require them. The team at The Westin make a conscious effort to create a home away from home. Our reluctance to leave such a haven drew us to ordering room service for dinner – and what a meal it was. The Beef Bresaola was thin juicy slices of meat, topped with fresh salad faves like tomato, lettuce and arugula. Delicious! The Tom Yum soup was one of the best we’ve tasted in a long time, with no skimping on the prawns. Whilst the seafood mixed grill was a smoky, tender affair that we couldn’t get enough of. All of the menus at The Westin are filled with superfoods which creates vitality and wellbeing through their philosophy of food synergy – pairing certain foods to increase their health-giving benefits. estled amongst the exotic Kaafu Atoll and Embood Hoo Lagoon, taking pride of place on a remote island, lays a multi-island leisure and entertainment project, Crossroads Maldives. Accessible in just 15 minutes by speedboat from Velna International Airport in Malé, the destination boasts not one but two incredible resorts that provide travellers with individuality and excitement. HARD ROCK HOTEL MALDIVES First up, we check into the stunning Hard Rock Hotel for two nights. Our expectations were high as the brand carries such a strong reputation all over the world, and it’s safe to say that every expectation was exceeded. Stepping off the speedboat, we received a very warm welcome by the Hard Rock team. Refreshing drinks and relaxed backdrops set the tone for our mini break. Hard Rock Hotel focuses on the little things, so you can be sure of a memorable and unique stay. Inspired by local culture, tropical architecture is infused with contemporary design features. Our favourite touch is the tailoring that can be done to suit every guest’s musical tastes. You can enjoy exclusive brand offerings and amenities including The Sound of Stay music programme, offering complimentary use of Fender guitars and amps, and Crosely record players for in-room jam sessions. It’s no surprise that there is a big focus on music here. After all, the brand is known for its oneof-a-kind blend of music, entertainment, iconic merchandise and authentic, American fare. Of course, accommodation is subtle but stunning. We stay in a gorgeous beach villa, which offers modern decor with breath-taking beach views. Each of the beach villas comes with its own private butler and 24-hour hotel services – adding a real sense of escape and luxury to the stay. Outside of the villa there is plenty to explore with an outdoor swimming pool at the front of the property, state-of-the-art fitness centre and the signature Rock Spa. Our days were planned perfectly with a mixture of both relaxing on sandy beaches, spa time and fitness and self-defence classes. Our favourite, however, was the music-infused yoga programme, aptly named Rock Om. It’s everything a yogi and a music-lover will appreciate – and if you’re into both then this is one activity that should be high up on your list of things to do here. The Rock Spa offered an extensive menu of treatments and massages to suit every wellbeing wish. We opted for the signature deluxe massage in the Rock Spa. Traditional techniques are

Focus is placed on the reflexology points on the face, scalp and feet to help rebalance energy and deliver you with a renewed state of mind. It’s exactly what you need in the Maldives and was easily one of the highlights of the trip. The evenings at Hard Rock Hotel are certainly memorable; sunset drinks followed by delicious seafood and grilled meat bbq, and live music on the beach. We’d highly recommend taking a buggy or a short cycle to the iconic Hard Rock Cafè for more live entertainment. The stateof-the-art Café highlights Hard Rock’s new design style and latest technology. The vibrant Cafe features bright, eclectically designed interiors, offering 225 colourful seats and 13 pieces of iconic memorabilia that shines the spotlight on icons such as The Rolling Stones, Kiss and Imagine Dragons, along with other legendary artists. Hard Rock Cafe Maldives also features a unique chandelier comprised of 600 glass bottles, displayed above the bar. It’s truly a sight for sore eyes and we couldn’t stop instagramming it! The Maldives’ Cafe’s Rock Shop also offers musicinspired items as well as collectible Hard Rock Cafe merchandise. Fans can acquire exclusive Maldivesspecific merchandise and much-coveted signature pins at this retail location. It’s worth visiting alone just for this if you’re a devoted Hard Rock admirer. The hotel is packed with show stopping, family-friendly activities to suit all age groups. There’s even a very cool Hard Rock Roxity Kid's Club especially designed to keep younger guests entertained. PREMIUM POWER:

MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS CLUBMAN The British premium car manufacturer MINI presents what is by some measure one of the most powerful models ever approved for public road use in the brand’s 60-year history. FACT takes the brand-new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman out on the UAE roads to put the vehicle through its paces…

fact magazine

C

elebrating 60 years of car production, 2019 was a noteworthy year for MINI; six decades of manufacturing youthful, energetic cars for nostalgia-enthused car buyers across the world. If we look back at the original MINI, the car was designed to bring compact car transportation to the masses. Now, the current iteration of the iconic British make is more of a niche brand that caters to particular tastes in terms of design, comfort, and functioning. And while MINI’s 21st century models may not be for everyone, performance remains key and plays a vital role in the brand's success story. That is no exception for their latest offering. The MINI John Cooper Works Clubman is dubbed the most powerful ever, but does its 306 hp 4-cylinder turbo engine produce the thrills you might expect from driving a worthy contender in the compact premium segment? The Clubman’s extraordinarily powerful engine is combined as standard with a new 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission, including mechanical differential lock on the front axle, an ALL4 all-wheel drive system, a specifically engineered chassis, and additional reinforcement modifications for the body structure, engine connection and chassis fastenings. This enables the John Cooper Works racing sensation to attain a completely new dimension of performance – and where better than the UAE roads to put this to the test? The Clubman generates a maximum torque of 450 Nm in the broad engine speed range between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm, which is around 28 per cent higher than that of the previous engine. The maximum output of the new 4-cylinder engine has been increased by approximately 32 per cent. The resulting pulling

60

power, according to MINI, enables the new engine of the Clubman to produce an acceleration performance of 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds - more than a second quicker than the old model. If you’re a regular on the highways between the Emirates, the Clubman ensures an impressive level of elasticity during spontaneous speed bursts – smoothly picking up speed and sprinting you forward powerfully and gracefully. For the first time with MINI vehicles, the maximum speed of the new top sports performer is now electronically limited to 250 km/h. A bigger turbocharger helps achieve the extra output, and further changes to the 2.0-litre engine encompass the crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, main bearing, and fuel injectors. The engine cooling system has been enhanced and the transmission has its own oil cooler. The more powerful turbo 4-cylinder exhales through a redesigned Sport exhaust system. As before, MINI's ALL4 all-wheel drive is standard, although components have been beefed up to handle the additional torque. So, too, have the brakes, which now include 4-piston fixed-caliper disc brakes on the rear wheels to ensure constantly high braking values even under intensive use. The large brake discs of 360 × 30 millimetres at the front and 330 × 20 millimetres at the rear combined with optimised coolant duct geometry also play their part in achieving the high level of stability. The red-coated brake calipers at the front bear the John Cooper Works logo – adding a detailed touch for MINI enthusiasts. After multiple trips between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, we find that the additional horsepower is welcomed and having the ALL4 allwheel drive system does a great job in getting the power down to the tarmac without inducing torque steer. is the flat cornering stance of the Clubman, it remains true to MINI's goal of making its vehicles handle like go-karts. In this case, a go-kart with 300 horses and a smooth shifting 8-speed dual clutch automatic. Progressing up into Sport and Sport+ modes, the biggest difference you feel is in the quickness of the throttle response and greater feedback from the steering. The Clubman is so utterly composed, that there was little to feel in the way of decreased body roll or higher suspension firmness from the sportier drive modes. The Clubman tackles both long empty roads and swift corners with reassuring confidence, which thanks to the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), is able to calculate and apportion power to the front and rear wheels as required to ensure maximum dynamic ability in relation to the driving situation. Furthermore, the steering is communicative and the car's front-end bites into turns with precision. It feels suave and spirited, just like a MINI should feel. If power is a secondary notion for you, the body on the Clubman will be sure to impress. The Clubman has a sleeker look and a lower ride height, diverging from its hardtop and convertible JCW siblings. And we quite like that. The aesthetic changes to the Clubman are subtle. A keen eye would notice the newly-designed grille flanked by revised LED Matrix headlights as well as the unique Union Jack taillight design, which are the key identifiers 62

here. Exterior colours, mirror cap choices, wheel designs, exterior trim packs and interior trim and leather options have also been revised and expanded to meet the needs of potential buyers. The long wheelbase, large track width and low centre of gravity displayed is ideal for a chassis design and tuning aimed at consistent sports performance. In addition, the systematic reinforcement of the body structure and extremely taut chassis connections in the new Clubman ensure maximum driving precision. The overall package put together by the John Cooper Works with its sheer dynamics, agility and precision, is completed by model-specific design features in the exterior, which serve to optimise the vehicles’ aerodynamic features and air duct design. The large air inlets on the front of the vehicle are designed to serve the cooling requirements of both the drive and the brake system. In addition, the outstanding performance characteristics are reflected in the model-specific design of the side skirts and the independent rear aprons with integrated diffuser elements. Model-specific roof spoilers play a role in reducing uplift at high travel speeds. Furthermore, the Clubman is equipped with aerodynamically optimised mirror caps. Aesthetically, the Clubman is a beauty. Accentuations in the contrast paintwork and the mirror caps, an individual design for the side scuttles by the additional indicators, and the John Cooper Works logo in the radiator grille and tailgate – are all design elements that have been integrated into the vehicle in a most tasteful way. A red crossmember subdivides the newly designed radiator grille of the new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman. Its headlamps, rear lights and rear apron also display the new design of the latest model revision for the MINI Clubman. The characteristic interior sports car flair is partly down to the John Cooper Works sports seats with integrated head rests, the John Cooper Works sport steering wheel with multifunction buttons, the John Cooper Works selector lever, and the anthracite headliner. The exclusive standard equipment of the top sports model in the MINI range also includes LED headlamps, keyless ride, the Radio MINI Visual Boost including 6.5 inch display with touchscreen function and a redesigned graphical display. The integrated Connected Media equipment is able to access numerous MINI Connected online services. Alternatively, there is also a choice of special equipment options, including Connected Navigation, with its easy-to-use routing function and additional infotainment options, as well as Connected Navigation Plus with an 8.8 inch touch display. In conjunction with these options, the Real Time Traffic Information service is also available, providing real-time data on the current traffic situation, a personal Concierge service and the MINI Online Internet portal, and it is also Apple CarPlay-ready. In addition, navigation map updates are automatically downloaded to the vehicle via the mobile network connection. Basically, the Clubman is HOOKED up when it comes to keeping you in-the-know about road and traffic conditions, and making sure that your favourite playlist of podcast is right on hand to save the day. The Clubman is fast – thanks to its extraordinary engine. The subtle drama with the refined and clear competency is a remarkable feat for MINI. It’s not as loud and rebellious as some of its brethren but it’s most certainly on the verge of slightly unhinged and unashamedly sporty. For staying true to its roots, the Clubman is dynamic, charming, very impressive, and full of surprises. ✤

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

The traditional Vietnamese dishes of deep-fried Spring Rolls and Black Pepper Beef were the next leg of our journey. We then crossed the border to China for a staple of any Chinese menu, Roasted Duck. An all-time favourite for a reason and undoubtedly one of the most popular dishes on the menu. The bok choy, duck gravy and pickled ginger provided the perfect accompaniment to the succulent meat. Crossing the Yellow Sea to South Korea provided us with the Seafood Chili, perfect for anyone who loves to eat from the ocean, with a kick to boot. Travelling south to the islands of Indonesia gave us the incredible Nasi Goreng, a must have for any Asian food lover. The egg yolk spilling over the prawn and satay chicken is the kind of bite which reminds us why good food is so important, it just makes us feel amazing! It’s a well-known fact that there is always room for dessert, anyone who tells you otherwise is telling fibs. When you think of Asian puddings, Mango Sticky Rice, always stands out and Sui Mui delivers the perfect Khao Niew Ma Maung. The Young Coconut Crepe provided a fitting end to a meal which started with a coconut soup. Served with a delicious Pandan ice cream, which fits hand in hand with the coconut flavours, every spoonful leaves you wanting more. We’ll definitely be back, and next time we’ll be bringing the whole family. It feels a bit naughty not to share this dining experience with everyone we know! ✤

ui Mui at The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, provides the perfect culinary journey through Asia. A trip from the curries of India to the Nasi Goreng of Indonesia, Sui Mui pulls in delights from ten countries to provide diners with a mouth-watering experience. Opening its doors every evening from 6pm to 10.30pm, the restaurant provides both indoor and outdoor seating, catering perfectly for the two seasons of Dubai. As we visited the restaurant on a mild night, we were fortunate enough to sit outside on the beautiful patio area, which evokes memories of Thai holidays with authentic décor and precise finishing touches. Sui Mui offers a graze platter at AED350 for two people which it describes as a social, culinary adventure. This consists of chef’s specials and signature dishes served beautifully on a large banana leaf at the centre of the table. Our leaf included 10 dishes from across the Asian continent, each served separately and presented wonderfully, much to our excitement. A definite haven for those social media snaps. Similar to the tapas style, the graze platter allows diners to move around the table and sample different styles which leaves the taste buds longing for more. The Tom Kha Gai is a delicious Thai soup served in a coconut, it’s incredibly flavoursome and wonderfully presented. The Tom Yum Goong added a bit of spice to the palate, with meaty tiger prawns delivering that protein punch. fact magazine

CARIBBEAN SOUL There are very few spots in Dubai where you can walk in every day of the week, or twice a month, or even the odd occasion throughout the year and EVERY time you visit, it feels like walking into a family home where familiar faces and all the good vibes greet you with a genuine welcome. Miss Lily’s Dubai is one of these rare places and FACT’s Shabana Adam can’t get enough… fact magazine

• ON THE MENU

N

ow open in its fourth year, it’s safe to say that to regulars, first-time visitors and those who turn to Miss Lily’s for a guaranteed great night out, the venue has become a Dubai institution. There is no other place quite like it – and trust us, we’ve been to many professed “hotspots” – yet nothing quite lives up to the Lily’s charm and charisma. The Caribbean feels are SO real, in the largerthan-life speakers that amp up the main area, the laid-back ambiance of the exclusive, elevated lounge, and the vibrant dining room with its dim lighting and comfy booths – this is where you come for the food and stay for the music. If you’re already familiar with their menu then, like us, you probably have your usual go-to order on lock (Jerk Chicken Roti and Plantain it is). However, those of you wanting to venture out and try something new, Miss Lily’s has made recent additions to an already-pleasing menu. The casual Caribbean joint is known for specialising in a modern approach to classic island cooking, drawing from the diverse roots of Jamaican cuisine and offering delicacies seasoned with fiery Jamaican spices. The new concoctions are a true representation of the creativity, boldness and capabilities of a place that, in our eyes, can do no wrong. With knives and forks at the ready, we started our culinary tour of new dishes with the Miss Lily’s Original Beef Tartare. A classic take on a prime beef tenderloin with a contrasting side of crunchy sesameseed roti crisps, this wholesome combination is topped with spicy mayo dressing and toasted buckwheat. Having eaten at many “fine-dining” restaurants, we tackled the tartare with slight scepticism, but there really was no need to second guess. The amalgamation of flavours is completely unique to anything we’ve tried before. Whereas traditional beef tartare brings sour, salted and slightly sweet tastes together, here it’s the addition of crunchy sesame seed roti crisps, which elevates the dish to Caribbean territory. There’s a crispy texture that we didn’t expect to find, but absolutely loved from the first taste. The Wedge Salad is a colourful choice with a mix of baby gem lettuce, tomato, onions, blue cheese, grilled corn and honey jerk bacon. Ingredients are fresh and crunchy; however, the blue cheese dressing is quite overpowering in this instance, which meant that a couple of bites is all we needed to get our fill. Things quickly took a surprising turn as we feasted our eyes on the Grilled Octopus. A meat that is devilish to cook right, we were intrigued to taste the Lily’s version. Accompanied by a side of roasted sweet potatoes, garlic aioli and scotch bonnet sauce, this had to be the biggest revelation of the whole meal. The octopus is tender and delicious with a lightly charred texture that gives it a welcomed smokiness. Our taste buds are jumping with joy! Another standout dish was the Jerk Lamb Kebab; this is where Dubai meets “Di Yard” and gives you a dish that draws inspiration from the Caribbean and the Middle East. Complete with a side of Jerk sauce, green chilli-garlic and served on top of roti bread, you’ll find fire roasted shishito pepper, tomatoes and pickled okra on the plate too. Served with dried scotch bonnet, fried garlic and labneh. This one is all about the flavours – the carnivores amongst us will be in bona fide food heaven. Sharing is made easy with the Grilled Tomahawk Steak; a mammoth dish for serious steak lovers. This hot honey mustard glaze coated sensation is complemented by an entourage of shallots, onions and creamy butter, easily serving a party of up to four people. There’s even a “likkle salad”. We request for the meat to be cooked medium well 82

and that is done, perfectly. The meat is seasoned exceptionally and, literally, slides effortlessly with every cut. We devour it with all of its accompaniments and way too much enthusiasm. Sweet tooths are spoilt for choice with the Jamaican Queen Cake (a soaked dark chocolate cake with coconut pecan filling and chocolate ganache; Sweet Patties (a sugar dusted homemade pastry filled with apple compote, served with dulce de leche; and last, but my no means least, Baked Jamaica (a vanilla coffee mousse, banana compote, dulce de leche topped with swiss meringue and white chocolate crunch). There’s a good chance that half way through your food, the DJ will spin a track that will automatically manoeuvre your body into getting up out of your seat and having a little dance. The fun doesn’t stop at the food. Miss Lily’s energy will soon takeover and have you up on the floor and dancing to all your favourite tunes of now and some reminiscent of simpler days. When the team here reiterate that Miss Lily’s DXB is more than just a restaurant: “it’s a family, it’s a culture, it’s a movement” – they mean every single word. The service speaks for itself and it’s likely that you’ll stay for the good music and easy vibes, which in a city full of too many imitations and gimmicks, is so refreshing to see. One thing’s for sure, Miss Lily’s DXB will have a hard time keeping us away. ✤

CHINGON COOL Chingon which in Mexican slang roughly translates as “awesome, cool or very good” is exactly what this new, aptly-named restaurant at the Grand Millennium Business Bay sets out to achieve. FACT’s David Tapley takes a seat to discover its culinary treats… fact magazine

85

• NEW IN TOWN

S

ituated on the rooftop of the five-star property, this Mexican bar and eatery offers a number of surprises. Hidden behind wooden doors lies one of the most captivating venues in the city. The design is vaguely tribal with gold mounted skulls, ceilings strung with hanging ropes and illuminated runes engraved into the walls. Accompanied by a rhythmic soundtrack (we found ourselves using Shazam on more than one occasion during the evening) and a roof that fully retracts to reveal the night sky, we can’t help but feel as though we’ve ventured into the ruins of the Mayan Pyramids at Chichen Itza. It’s all very atmospheric which certainly adds to the appeal of the space and the high ceilings and meticulous attention to detail make Chingon immediately likable. Broken down into lounge and restaurant, Chingon has been purpose built to accommodate those who are after a more causal experience, think mixed-drinks and tacos served at the flame-licked bar (that’s right, there are flames literally rising from the shelves) or head into the dining room for a more refined experience. There’s also a spacious VIP area located high above the restaurant floor. In keeping with the modern Mexican theme the dishes at Chingon follow traditional recipes that explore the full breadth of Mexico, the result is an appealing menu created by Chef Rene Millan in which many of the dishes are likely to be found in a typical Mexican household. This place goes beyond nachos, burritos or fajitas. We begin with the Sikil P’ak (AED45) a starter to share that consists of pumpkin seed hummus with chilli oil. The thicker than expected paste is undeniably bold in flavour but perhaps a touch too salty for our liking but works well upon the fragile lotus chips (AED25) dusted in Chingon spices and doused in lime. The raw bar offers ceviche, tiradito, crude and tartare but it’s the locally sourced Dibba Bay Oysters (AED20 each) that catch our attention. The oysters are beautifully fresh and having been sourced from the Middle East’s first farm to grow gourmet oysters for the home market, ensure an unprecedented sea to table experience in the process. The molluscs are given an appealing Mexican twist thanks to accompaniments of habanero pico de gallo, lime and hot sauce and Chingon should be applauded for championing locally sourced produce. A trio scallop toastadas (AED85) continue to introduce us to pronounced flavours thanks to a combination of cashew salsa, avocado crema and blood orange caviar which complement both the delicate profile of the Hokkaido scallops and the crisp texture of the thin tostada. The specially curated taco menu is where our meal really hits its stride and it is at this point that we find ourselves fully enamoured with the charms of Chingon. Fillings include chicken, tofu, duck, or if you’re feeling particularly boujee then the El Dorado (AED115) should be your taco of choice. A black tortilla pressed with 24k gold, A9 Wagyu, avocado crema and black truffle. The combination of premium ingredients is certainly noticeable and while the dish panders to Dubai’s love of edible gold and all things Instagrammable, it’s actually a rather impressive concoction. Each course surpasses its predecessor until we reach the

86

fact magazine

pinnacle of the meal which in this instance transpires to be the miso lamb shank (AED165), an extraordinary combination of sweet and spicy that derives from a mix of miso, hoisin mole, crispy garlic and bean puree. The meat is undeniably tender and literally slides off the bone and once slathered in the sauce, it’s

NEW IN TOWN •

near-impossible to put our knife and fork down until the bowl has literally been licked clean. Presentation comes into play with the desserts and while texturally the cheesecake wasn’t for us, the Mictlān (AED45) makes for a remarkable way to end the Chingon dining experience. Named after the Aztec underworld, this particular dessert is a dark chlorate mousse encased in a golden chocolate skull. The mousse itself is light and not overly rich but the textures that accompany the mousse offer little other than visual appeal. Lime sponge, a chocolate soil and gold blueberries do little other than detract from the skulls-shaped confectionary which is excellent. For us, Chingon leads the pack of Dubai’s Mexican restaurants due to a combination of flavoursome dishes that are unafraid to be bold, striking decor and a nightlife vibe that leaves us wanting more. Perfect for a date night, an evening on the town or a dinner overlooking the Burj - Chingon seemingly has it all! ✤

A

mwaj Rotana is the epitome of chic and understated elegance. It exudes sophistication and an aura of grandeur. The hotel’s reputation is one of unrivalled services and an ambience which is beyond all expectations, boasting the largest outdoor terrace along Jumeirah Beach Residence is the ultimate bonus. “All Out” doesn’t quite cover it. Behemoth, vast, magnificent… the list goes on. Here, you’re welcomed to eat like a king, drink like a fish and brunch like there’s no tomorrow. This particular brunch is an expedition in culinary terms. The large buffet hosts over 100 dishes with an award-winning combination of cuisines brimming with offerings from some of the best restaurants in Doha. Rosso, Horizon, Benihana and JB’s are not to be missed and add a sense of real luxury to the brunch. Fear not though, you have 10 live stations, their food truck, numerous bars and a live teppanyaki experience. Trust me, you’ll be seeking out every decadent morsel over the four-hour period. Specialising in the freshest and most simplistic way to deliver seafood is something that evidently comes natural to Amwaj Rotana. Oysters, Sushi and Salmon Gravadlax headline on their impressive menu. Produce reigns king at their Oyster Bar and staff maximise flavours without straying too far from its raw state. The chefs allow the produce to shine rather than sauces or spices stealing the limelight, although their homemade horseradish sauce is definitely something to write home about. In addition, the likes of ‘Mediterranean’ add depth to the choices with hand stretched pizzas and fresh pasta. The opportunity both to showcase the stand-out dishes of the restaurants and for diners to have their appetites whetted for more is the beauty of this approach towards this particular brunch. The famous smoked beef and other meat offerings here are brought together here seamlessly. Foie Gras topped Melba Toasts more than hold their own. This is what really struck me here. Nothing disappoints, everything dazzles. Sides are arranged to suggest diners what might complement each dish although many seem more like an addition to the main act as opposed to being a supporting act, on account that they are so well executed and constructed. There is a selection of stations devoted to

libation and nectar of the finest quality. Roughly translated as the drinks selection which is unsurpassed by any other brunch I have visited. The live band played throughout and created a truly harmonious vibe. The high-end nature of the stations should not dissuade families from heading to Amwaj Rotana as there is a dedicated family zone’ where children are happily occupied, where you will find entertainers, play zone and a children’s buffet - smiles all round! There was absolutely no way that I could desert dessert. Tiny coloured macaroons, slices of mousse and light, airy sponges and strawberry tarts are portioned in a way that diners can graze. Slabs of chocolate and whole, glazed cheesecakes entice you to indulge just a little more. From small appetisers and amuse bouche through to hearty mains and the bounties of the ocean the stations cater to every palate and occasion. Friday All Out Brunch will not fail to impress or satisfy and will help you to decide upon which dining experiences offered at Amwaj Rotana require further exploration. Hopefully you will leave feeling that this is the beginning of new dining journeys rather than the end of one. ✤

BEAUTIFUL AYA

With a slew of new openings, Chef Izu Ani shows little signs of slowing down and rounds out a busy 2019 by venturing into a new culinary direction with the opening of Aya in the popular dining enclave at City Walk. FACT’s David Tapley visits for an afternoon of delicious food… fact magazine

ya which means ‘beautiful’ in Japanese is exactly that, an exquisite restaurant that boasts impeccable interior design and a menu of high-quality Japanese dishes to match. The restaurant space presents bright interiors, an expansive bar area, sushi counter and an open show kitchen where guests can peek through the glass into the inner workings of a busy kitchen. With ample seating both inside and outside on a pleasant garden terrace, guests can opt to sit amongst cherry blossom trees with twisted bows in full bloom or beneath large abstract light fittings. There truly is no bad seat in the house and Aya feels like a natural progression for Chef Izu as he turns his attention to a new cuisine. Aya’s menu is interesting and takes traditional Japanese dishes while injecting them with a Mediterranean twist in a menu that comprises of mezze, buns, rolls, raw, josperyaki, mains and sides. We begin with the Seaweed Salad (AED80) which comprises strands of thick purple seaweed as opposed to the expected wakame. The delicate seaweed is piled generously upon a robust tarama and works in conjunction with the pronounced flavour of the cured fish roe. The Short Rib Gyoza (AED80) with their shish sweet and sour sauce are lightly fried and the durable skin wrapper gives way to the rich and tender short rib filling which could easily make for a standalone dish. An interesting menu choice, the octopus ‘takoyaki’ croquettes (AED85) are a delight. Lightly fried and adorned with tuna flakes the crisp exterior of the croquette gives way to a warm filling of diced octopus swimming in a hearty sauce that is at once warming and comforting. From the raw section the yellowtail (AED80), smoked salmon gunkan (AED65) and nigiri selection (AED200) are all must order dishes with the sushi being rather exceptional thanks to the utilisation of fresh ingredients and the clever use of small jellies placed upon the cool raw fish to add additional bursts of flavour, with each of the six pieces becoming progressively spicier in a novel approach to sushi presentation. The Wagyu Katsu Sando (AED150) has probably become the most Instagrammed dish of 2019 but has only recently started appearing on menus here in Dubai. Though the price point is a touch high for what is essentially a sandwich, it’s the premium 9+ Wagyu that is the commanding factor. Lovingly wedged between thick slices of sweet Hokkaido milk bread and slathered in Aya’s signature BBQ sauce, it’s near-impossible not to get caught up in the hype, for the dish is an absolute sensation. The beauty of a menu such as Aya is that there is no filler and each and every dish could be considered a must order and in all honesty we could’ve structured our entire dining experience around the appetisers. The mains, though limited in number, maintain the consistency for quality that Aya successfully strives for, take for example the Spanish Octopus (AED175) a tender tendril, lovingly coated in a sticky red yuzu glaze that successfully manages to strike the ideal balance between sweet and spicy. An accompaniment of coriander emulsion completes the plate. With a variety of meat and seafood options cooked on the josper grill our pick would be the Scottish Salmon (AED170) with its teriyaki glaze and pomelo salad. A plate of distinct Asian flavours that complement rather than detract from the flaky protein that has been infused with teriyaki. Chef Izu has managed quite the incredible task in curating the menu for Aya and the way in which he balances Asian flavours and International influences is as astounding as it is impressive. This notion continues all the way through to the dessert course and the Brown Butter Ice Cream (AED120), a literal mountain of dairy, enhanced via the addition of hazelnut crumble and olive oil sponge that is presented a la minute and

brings a unique textural counterpart to the dessert. Easily enough for two people to share. Aya marks another strong opening from Chef Izu and it would seem as though he has the Midas touch, turning each one of his culinary endeavours into a success story. Aya sits comfortably alongside the likes of Lima and Toro + Ko in City Walk’s licensed district known as The Square. It brings an exciting fine-dining concept into an area that is otherwise very much focused on causal eateries. Sure, the price point is a little higher than other restaurants in the vicinity but as the old saying goes “you get what you pay for” and at Aya that equates to an exceptional dining experience anchored around excellent food and strong service. ✤

The dishes aim to elevate conventional vegetarian and vegan cuisine by fusing traditional cooking techniques with 21st century presentations, to deliver matchless flavours and elevated sensory experiences. The word “chay” – meaning vegetarian or vegan in Vietnamese – has an interesting place in the culinary history of Vietnam. In order to prepare proper vegetarian cuisine, the ingredients must be delicious, healthy and also eye catching, as chefs ensure to create dishes that imitate the taste and appearance of meat dishes. The Chay Time special will give guests the opportunity to choose a starter, main and dessert for only AED149 until end of February. Taking its inspiration from the first millennium tribe that settled across Southeast Asia, LAO reflects the rich culinary traditions of the Lao people, heavily inspired by the natural beauty and fundamental cuisine of Vietnam.
