ere’s a little bit of fun trivia for you; does anyone know what FACT stands for? It’s Food. Arts. Culture. Travel. Of course, we have a little bit of fashion, beauty, tech and motoring too but our main goal every month is to provide you, our readers, with more of the best dining offers, artistic happenings, cultural initiatives and weekend escapes – all of the great things that make up life in Dubai. We are fiercely local and going into April, we intend to keep it that way! Turn to p27 for our mega foodie feature: Luxury Eats with all the best five-star food in the city. Luxury hotels with awesome dining promotions to treat yourself, there’s enough to fill up every day of the calendar this month. Continuing on the delicious path to all things tasty, our dining reviews this month take a very global turn. Check out the New in Town report on The London Project and best of British influences from the UK capital (p81), whilst a literal trip to Thailand is on the cards with a visit to the every-pleasing Bambooda at Roda Al Bustan in our Culinary Spotlight (p85), and we take another exotic stop at the iconic Mekong at Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort in our Foodie Corner (p89). Find the best restaurant openings, new dining promotions and more to keep your palate satisfied, throughout the issue. We take a break from the food and bring you the final nominees list for the second annual FACT Spa & Wellness Awards Dubai 2019. With so many amazing wellness venues across the city, we’ll be awarding the efforts of the best ones in a lavish ceremony next month (p51). We’ve had an AMAZING response this year – if you haven’t voted yet, go to www.fact-magazine.com and show some love for your favourite spas, health clubs, nail studios and more in Dubai. The arts scene in Dubai is continuously booming and this month we cast a spotlight on the renowned annual event that is Art Dubai; an exhibition that celebrates world talents and galleries for their unique creative work (p41). I can hardly believe it's March already but that only means one month closer to the return of GoT and planning binge-watch snacks - who's with me? ☺

PALETTE TRANQUILITY Art Perspective has launched the new art exhibition Palette Tranquility at Le Patio in Habtoor Palace, LXR Hotels & Resorts, combining the work of four new artists; Karine Roche, Annabelle Smith Bigno, Leila Barakat Mukhaimer and Anneke Bester. PALETTE TRANQUILITY WILL FEATURE Artist Karine Roche from France. Her inspirations are derived from nature and urban spaces creating a cosmology ideally presenting nature returning back to the city center. Karine uses a technique known as ‘sensitive surface’ to transform the concrete jungle whilst blending soft fabrics and splashes of colour to bring her depictions of the city’s urban flora and fauna to life. The exhibition will also showcase the work of artist Annabelle Smith Bigno from France and UK who is fascinated with how each subject fuses and connects into its surroundings. Pigments flow, diffuse and merge together over threads and a multitude of textures. This technique is then used to enhance and personalise her inspiration, which is often drawn from local themes. The result shows subject; composition and colour strike their own unique balance on canvas. Artist Leila Barakat Mukhaimer will also be exhibiting her current collection, which is inspired by life and natural phenomena. The theme of her artwork is a journey through the abstractionism in nature. A dive into the radiance, color, and magnitude of what is around us. From one piece to the next, a viewer is able to experience bursts of imagination that are all linked and inspired by the beauty and splendor of nature. For diversity, the exhibition will also be hosting Sculptor 14

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA One of the world’s most popular musicals, The Phantom of the Opera, will make its Middle East debut at Dubai Opera for a limited season beginning October 16. THE ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER blockbuster has won over 70 major theatre awards, including seven Tony Awards on Broadway and four Olivier Awards in the West End. The Phantom of the Opera became the longest running show in Broadway history on January 9, 2006 when it celebrated its 7,486th performance. On January 1, 2018 it celebrated its 13,000th performance and later that month on January 24, the production celebrated an amazing 30 years on Broadway. Chief Executive Officer of Broadway Entertainment Group, Liz Koops said: “We have been working long and hard to bring PHANTOM to the Middle East, and we’re overwhelmed with the excitement and positive response we have received since we announced the regional debut of the show. We guarantee an unforgettable and remarkable experience. Whether you are a musical theatre lover or not, this show promises to be truly spectacular.” With 130 cast, crew and orchestra members, jaw-dropping scenery, breath-taking special effects and more than 230 costumes by the late international designer Maria Björnson, the production contains some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous and stirring music, including ‘The Phantom of the Opera,’ ‘Think of Me,’ and ‘Music of the Night.’ The original
cast recording, with over 40 million copies sold worldwide, is the best-selling cast recording of all time. Jasper Hope, Chief Executive at Dubai Opera, said: “We believe in providing our Dubai audiences the best of the best. The Phantom of the Opera‘s debut in the Middle East has been much anticipated, and tickets will become available to all in a matter of days. We are looking forward to sharing this amazing production with people here in Dubai.” Based on the classic novel Le Fantôme de L’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, the show tells the tale of a musical genius known only as the Phantom who inhabits the depths of the magnificent Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talent and beauty of a young soprano, Christine Daae, the Phantom falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for another, the Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where unrequited love, jealousy and passions collide. ✤

THE FAIR The 13th edition of the fair will showcase 90+ galleries from 41 countries, reconfirming Dubai’s position as a global meeting point for the arts. Art Dubai’s new structure includes four main sections complementing each other, which will offer visitors greater access and deeper engagement with artists and galleries from non-Western geographies. The new format positions the Contemporary section at the core of the fair, with Modern presented alongside the contemporary galleries, enabling an elevated understanding of the region’s art history. The inaugural Bawwaba gallery section, taking its title from the Arabic word for ‘gateway’, focuses on different geographies and viewpoints from new markets, featuring solo presentations of works produced specifically for the fair. The programme-cumgallery section Residents, is a project inviting international artists for a six to eight week residency in the UAE to produce new work and immerse themselves in the local art scene. It will see its second edition in 2019 and will specifically focus on Latin America. Continuing the fair’s commitment to supporting the development of the local art scene, Art Dubai will dedicate a new section to showcase young, local projects from the fields of art, culture and creativity in the UAE, as well as produce an exhibition by the artists participating in Campus Art Dubai 7.0 programme. Pablo del Val, Art Dubai’s Artistic Director, said: “We aim to provide visitors to the 2019 fair a new experience by changing the gallery hall structure to allow for a more curated presentation with larger booths, enable a more cohesive reading of the different works on show, and highlight one of Art Dubai’s key focal points – art from and focused on the Global South. With this new format, we received a record number of gallery applications and we are delighted to welcome both long-time returning galleries as well as newcomers, including first-time exhibitors from Cameroon and Colombia.”
CONTEMPORARY & MODERN Reflecting the new structure of the fair, the participating 69 Contemporary and Modern galleries will be presented alongside one 42

another in one of the two main gallery halls, with Modern taking place in a specific designated area, allowing for a better reading of the art history and contextualization of Contemporary art from the region. The 2019 Contemporary section will see a strong contingent of returning galleries from Europe and Asia, including Victoria Miro (London, Venice), Galleria Continua (San Gimignano, Beijing, Les Moulins, La Habana), Experimenter (Kolkata), Ota Fine Arts (Tokyo), Galerie Templon (Brussels, Paris), Galleria Franco Noero (Turin), In Situ – Fabienne Leclerc (Paris) and Galerie Krinzinger (Vienna). Art Dubai Contemporary will also welcome back several prominent galleries from the region, including Sfeir-Semler Gallery (Hamburg, Beirut), ATHR Gallery (Jeddah), Dastan’s Basement (Tehran) as well as 10 Dubaibased galleries, including Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde, The Third Line and Green Art. In addition, the fair will feature a prominent line-up of first-time exhibitors from the region and beyond, including Sprüth Magers (Berlin, London, Los Angeles), Andersen’s (Copenhagen), Galerie MAM (Douala) and Akar Prakar (Kolkata, New Delhi, Jaipur). The new gallery hall structure will also allow the Modern galleries to create exhibitions in a larger booth space, allowing for more curated presentations. Highlights among the Modern Galleries include DAG (New York, Delhi, Mumbai), Gallery One (Ramallah), Dhoomimal Gallery (New Delhi) and Grosvenor Gallery (London).
BAWWABA Launching at the upcoming edition of Art Dubai, Bawwaba is a unique gallery section, located within the main gallery halls. The section will feature projects by individual artists or galleries, located in or focused on the Middle East, Africa, Central and South Asia as well as Latin America. fact magazine

• ART DUBAI The inaugural edition of Bawwaba will be curated by French-Cameroonian curator Élise Atangana, and focus on highly conceptual works including videos, installations and murals. The section aims to give visitors a curated reading of the Global South, acting, as its name suggests, as a gateway to current artistic developments from these regions. Exhibiting galleries in the first edition of Bawwaba will include Guzo Art Projects (Addis Ababa) exhibiting Kenyan artist Wanja Kimani, Canvas Gallery (Karachi) with works by Kuwaiti artist Hamra Abbas as well as a show of works by Turkish artist Gözde Ilkin by Gypsum Gallery (Cairo).
RESIDENTS Following the success of its inaugural edition, Residents will return for its second iteration in 2019, with 12 exhibiting galleries. The section will move from its initial location between the two main gallery halls to Mina A’Salam, and focuses solely on Latin America in 2019. Acting as the Curators for the 2019 edition, Fernanda Brenner (Brazil) and Munira Al Sayegh (UAE) selected 12 galleries who in turn nominated specific artists to spend 6-8 weeks in the UAE, who will be able to immerse themselves in the local art scene, producing art to populate their booths at the fair. The geographic focus for Residents results in further streamlining the visitors experience across all sections. It will, crucially, allow dialogue to take place between practices in the UAE and Latin America. Exhibiting galleries in the 2019 edition of Residents will include Galeria Revolver (Buenos Aires, Lima) exhibiting Jerry B. Martin, Mendes Wood DM (São Paulo, Brussels, New York), with works by Luiz Roque to Dubai, as well as Luisa Strina (São Paulo), showing Brazilian artist Alexandre da Cunha. Residents is held in partnership with the Office of Public and Cultural Diplomacy (OPCD). ✤ 46

CREATING NEW WORLDS Art Dubai and The Cultural Office of Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum will present the 7th edition of the Sheikha Manal Little Artists Programme. American artist Sally Curcio will be the lead artist for the upcoming iteration, themed Creating New Worlds, and taking place at Art Dubai from March 20 to 23. The programme is a partnership between The Cultural Office and Art Dubai, offering a unique educational opportunity for UAE-based children and teenagers, and encouraging them to excel in the arts. The programme is part of Art Dubai’s longstanding commitment to education and the development of the UAE’s cultural landscape. With Creating New Worlds, lead artist Sally Curcio will invite children and teenagers to explore and create cityscapes and urban landscapes through the use of miniatures and prototypes, allowing them to create their own imaginative utopia. Curcio’s goal with this project is to motivate an inventive spirit, cooperation as well as to encourage participants to explore how different materials can be composed to create new imagined environments. Materials such as colored beads, balls, pipe cleaners, blocks, bottle caps, and other found and recycled material will be used to create the new worlds, and their use for representing cityscapes of varying scale and perspective enriches idea development and creative processes that are of value in a range of artistic and work endeavors. Lead artist, Sally Curcio, said: “I’m delighted to have been chosen as the lead artist for the seventh edition of this prestigious programme. One of the key areas of focus in my work is engaging with children and teenagers, and I look forward to working with them on creating their own little utopias, while learning how to use their imagination, cooperate with each other and employ an inventive spirit.” The full programme for the 7th edition of the Sheikha Manal Little Artists Programme will include on-site workshops at Art Dubai, the popular Discovery Tours for children and teenagers at the fair, as well as the Artists-in-Schools Initiative. Due to the growing popularity of the programme, the number of public workshops will increase by 25% for the upcoming edition and feature daily Discovery Tours.

Hotel Mumbai WHAT’S IT ABOUT:
There’s amazing action sequences with a hint of comedy. Sidestepping from the traditional origin story concept, this allnew energetic adventure definitely gets a yes from us. – Captain Marvel
After a series of terrifying terror attacks take place all over the city of Mumbai, things will never be the same for the people of India. The film follows the heartbreaking story about the victims and survivors of the 2008 Mumbai attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.
DIRECTOR: Anthony Maras CAST: Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Anupam Kher
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?
A chilling look inside the true events of 26/11, Hotel Mumbai is an unlikely crowd pleaser. An event that changed India’s approach towards terrorism forever, Anthony Maras does a great job of depicting the events sensitively while also keeping it very raw. Hotel Mumbai aims to present a reliable narrative of what happened during the three-day ordeal. Based on interviews of survivors and witnesses, the film introduces the viewers to the overwhelming terror and tension that everyone involved experienced. Showing the impact of the attacks on locals and visitors in equal measure, Maras gives much of the narrative space to the four gunmen. Straying away from the traditional notions of heroism, Hotel Mumbai puts no one in the heroic spotlight. Stunningly framed and photographed, the film is the perfect tribute to everyone affected by the terrible tragedy.

Still on My Mind By Dido
Dido is back with her fifth studio album and we’re ready for the vocal feast that’s about to hit us. Penned in England with her brother Rollo, the album comes from a very special place and is another testament to her unparalleled musical genius. Her first studio album since 2013’s Girl Who Got Away, the album aims to display the singer’s love of hiphop alongside her folk roots. Featuring a barely-there guitar riff and the faintest of beats in the background, Hurricanes announces Dido’s return to the musical scene in all its glory. Unexpectedly bursting into a sea of electronica, the song is super soothing and is a breath of fresh air in a time of streaming-friendly beats. On the other hand, Give You Up is the breakup song you need in your life. Incredibly empowering and moving, the exquisite piano ballad will acknowledge your hurt while also making you feel strong. With the help of her signature sound and evocative lyrics, Dido has yet again created some otherworldly beautiful music. We’re here for it!
POP/ROCK
Head Above Water By Avril Lavigne
Taking the breakup album route with Head Above Water, everybody’s favourite pop punk princess is finally back on the scene. Making a comeback after her illness, divorce as well as some questionable song choices, the singer’s new album gives her a chance to prove her mettle and shine bright like the rock star she is. Sounding both wrecked and rejuvenated, Lavigne’s new album takes her listeners on an emotional journey. Opening with a series of instruments, Tell Me It’s Over gives us very old school and vintage vibes. Offering a very soul type feel, we see Avril taking a refreshingly different direction with her music for the very first time. Chronicling the singer’s battle with Lyme disease, Head Above Water is a powerful, spiritual epiphany that takes a highly personal note. The emotionally charged ballad features dramatic Christian rock vibes and is an open letter to her fans. Emerging from a physically and emotionally debilitating time, Head Above Water introduces us to a whole new side of Avril – one that we love to see in her music.
Darcy has had a massive crush on Tom Valeska since she was eight years old, and she’s established that no one measures up to the object of her affection. Despite Darcy’s best efforts, Tom is off limits as he is Darcy’s twin brother’s best friend. But when her brother hires Tom to flip their grandmother’s cottage, Darcy and Tom suddenly get too close for comfort and sparks begin to fly. Sally Thorne’s unapologetic and delightful voice is what makes this book an absolute page-turner!

Y
es, the new side of the city offers beach and skyscrapers, glamour and man-made attractions, but what we immediately fell in love with at Swissotel Al Ghurair was the genuine. It actually FEELS like the Gulf with surrounding views that embody life in Dubai of a time gone by. The location feels homely, nostalgic, authentic and all those things that only this side of Dubai can offer – a side that is still rarely explored, but is SO worth the time and attention. THE DELUXE TREATMENT We arrive into a grand lobby to find very helpful staff sail us through a smooth check-in and up in the lift we go to the Deluxe Suite. This corner sanctuary is not only HUGE but the perfect mix of classic elegance with functional. The large living room has a comfy seating area, dining table that would easily fit a family around it, and a separate section with all your amenities including tea and coffee, mini bar with snacks and all your usual facilities. The 111.6 sqm suite also boasts big bedroom with a king size bed. Each Suite features a spectacular view of either Dubai Creek or in the distance - Burj Khalifa and other skyscrapers. All rooms are equipped with multi satellite 42" LCD TV, high-speed Wi-Fi access, and IP phones in the bedroom. The internet is fast and we love that the suite blends relaxation with work, beautifully. Business travellers can enjoy spacious seating areas and writing desks as well as high speed WIFI connection. Leisure guests can relax and appreciate the in-house entertainment and guest services. The many paintings on the wall add a sense calm to the suite, especially when you return after a day out of discovering the area; you’ll be at zen knowing that this is what awaits you back at the hotel. fact magazine

The highlight of the suite has to be the stunning bathroom. With a floating tub in the middle and a double vanity, plus a shower room that is big enough to pirouette in (it even has a place to sit) – this might just be the mother of all the bathrooms we’ve had the pleasure to experience in a Dubai suite. There’s nothing better than having a nice long soak with lovely Purovel products and prepping for a good night’s sleep. There are a number of advantages to staying in the Deluxe Suite. You’ll get Executive Lounge Access which entitles you to a complimentary buffet breakfast, complimentary high tea, and evening canapés. Two pieces of complimentary pressing, one-hour complimentary use of the meeting room, express check in and late checkout – all of this as added benefits. Bonus! WELLNESS GOALS Swissotel Spa & Sport is located on the 5th floor of the hotel and offers up an excellent place to workout and rejuvenate with a much-needed massage or choice of treatment. That’s right, this hotel has all the luxuries – and even more – than what you could get across town. At the spa, you can escape to boost, relax and unwind your body. We’d recommend the Wellbeing Muscle Recovery Massage – it’s a deep massage that thoroughly targets all your aches and knots, leaving you feeling completely balanced by the end. you needs, or to talk you through your chosen therapy. There’s a long list of spa treatments to restore vitality and your natural stability or keep fit with at the fully-equipped gymnasium, relax by the pool at the Fitness Centre, and don’t forget to arrive early so that you can make use of the brilliant facilities – sauna, steam room, and a refreshing jacuzzi. Who says you can’t get invigorating and nourishing experiences in Deira – you certainly can at Swissotel Al Ghurair. DINING DELIGHTS Adding another notch in its belt for authentic experiences, the hotel’s Persian restaurant Shayan should be at the top of your dining list. Offering a range of traditional dishes, served in a comfortable and elegant ambiance, if you’re one for exploring new flavours and cuisines, prepared fresh using quality ingredients – this is the place to do it. The restaurant features a separate semi-private dining area, several cosy seating booths and large communal tables for bigger groups. We were obsessed with the fresh warm bread, which was mouthwatering when accompanied with the beautiful kashk-e-badenjan, made up of Persian ripe white cheese, grilled eggplants and seasoned with Iranian spices; as well as the famous dish of esfenaj-nargesi which was a concoction of fresh spinach, sautéed onion and fried egg – drool factor on high! The mains followed suit as we tucked into juicy kofta kebab, saffron-marinated chicken taouk and plump shrimp that had us fighting over the last piece – it was just SO good. The grills were accompanied by traditional rice mixtures that wouldn’t go amiss in any genuine Persian restaurant. The desserts were the highlight of the whole meal. A trio of three neat scoops graced the table – faloudeh (Persian icy noodles flavoured with rosewater), bastani-zaferani (Iranian saffron ice cream with pistachio), and makhlut (a mixture of Persian icy noodles and ice cream). The second was a taste-bud pleaser – we could eat this for dessert EVERY day. All washed down with some traditional red tea – the entire meal was one filled with depth and texture and many talking points. The service was impeccable too. The Swissotel Al Ghurair is within walking distance of famous landmarks and cultural locations such as the city's colourful souqs, Dubai Creek, Al Seef and other historical districts. It is in close proximity to Dubai International Airport and Dubai Union Station. There’s also a shuttle bus that connects the hotel to La Mer Beach. They’ve thought of it all! Contemporary meets class, and every member of the hotel team that we encountered really embodied a warm and welcoming nature. For the unique, the tangible and the true cultural vibes – Swissotel Al Ghurair is a prime choice for your staycation, vacation and short break in Dubai. ✤ GO: CALL (0)4 293 3000 FOR RESERVATIONS AND MORE INFORMATION. fact magazine

The petrol engine particulate filter is now an integral component of the exhaust emissions purification technology on all petrol engine models of the MINI brand in the small car segment. The MINI John Cooper Works Convertible’s petrol engine particulate filter is integrated into the standard sports exhaust emissions system. This ensures that the dynamic power delivery of the 2.0 litre, 170 kW/231 hp four-cylinder engine with MINI TwinPower Turbo technology generates a distinctively sporty sound while ensuring exemplary exhaust emissions. In a region full of all kinds of environmental factors, if you’re someone who wants to watch their carbon footprint when it comes to vehicle choice, but don’t want to compromise on performance – the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible has got your back. The vehicle also meets the especially stringent Euro 6d TEMP emissions standard. If it’s good enough for official standards – it’s great for us. The MINI John Cooper Works Convertible completes the standard sprint of 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds from standstill and the interim sprint of 80 to 120 km/h takes a mere 6.1 seconds. You’ll feel this power every time you’re taking off when the traffic lights go green, and even when you’re pulling out onto the open road – it’s a car, and sound, that won’t go unnoticed. The eight-speed Steptronic sports transmission is also optionally available. During the days when we had the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible to test drive, the UAE was experiencing a schizophrenic weather forecast where sweeping winds were crashing through the country. On one particular day, when visibility was low due to swirling clumps of sand circling on the roads, we drove from Dubai to Abu Dhabi not knowing what to expect. To our surprise, the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible handled itself like a pro – more so than some of the huge tanks of steel that were (trying) to whizz past this unpredicted underdog. There was little to no swaying, the rigid exterior and structure felt sturdy enough to hit the top end of the speed limit (135km-140km) with overall sprightly

movement, making it one of the most agile small-segment cars we’ve ever driven in the UAE. If that doesn’t satisfy any of nitpickers out there, the car also comes with maximum occupant protection; boasting a complete set of standard safety features with front airbags, head-thorax airbags integrated in the backrests, three-point automatic belts on all seats, ISOFIX child seat mountings for the front passenger seat and at the rear, tyre pressure display and partially active engine compartment lid for optimum pedestrian protection; needs-based control of the restraint systems and rollover protection by means of centralised safety electronics. In laments term, don’t underestimate the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible, it comes packing to face every realistic weather and on-road hazard that you might face in the UAE. The purist, race-feel oriented overall package of the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible consists of the powerful turbocharged engine, the sports suspension with 17-inch John Cooper Works light alloy wheels, a sports brake system, the John Cooper Works aerodynamics kit and the John Cooper Works sports seats. Of course, if there’s one thing that the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible does well, it’s the car’s powerfully expressive design underlining its manufacturer’s British origin. It carries a dynamically stretched silhouette, strong surface shaping and optimised air routing in the style of John Cooper Works; large cooling air outlets in the front apron which also occupy the space provided for the parking lights and fog lamps in the convertible; distinctively designed side sills and rear apron; LED headlights with white turn indicators and LED rear lights as standard; radiator grille, side scuttles and tailgate with John Cooper Works logo; optional body finish in the variant Rebel Green exclusively available for John Cooper Works’ models. Our biggest surprise was the amount of “approvals” the car received from valet drivers, who, despite getting into the hot seat of Patrol’s and Range Rover’s all day long – still handed the keys back to us with glowing reviews of this humble vehicle. The textile top of the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible is fully electrically powered, especially low-noise operation for the first time; with fully automatic opening and closing of the soft top at the press of a button in 18 seconds, also during travel at speeds up to 30 km/h (trust us, we tried it) and the sliding roof function is available at any road speed. High-quality interior with refined premium ambience, modern display and operating concept of the latest MINI generation and the sports car cockpit typical of John Cooper Works models will greet you on the inside. Now, the MINI is indeed a very special car when you’re sat inside; fully integrated rollover protection bars behind the rear seats; John Cooper Works sports seats in Dinamica/fabric Carbon Black with integrated headrests; John Cooper Works door sill cover strips; John Cooper Works leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons and shift paddles; John Cooper Works gearshift or selector lever; cockpit displays and central instrument surround in model-specific design; pedals and

driver footrest in stainless steel. Dare we say it – it’s playful yet sporty and classy all in one. If you love the sound of personal playlists and belting out the tunes, car karaoke style, the complete MINI Connected incar infotainment programme will tick all the boxes. There’s a constantly updated selection of apps for integration in the car via smartphone; exclusive MINI functions such as MINI Streetwise, online search, Sports Instruments and Force Meter; MINI Connected XL Journey Mate with real time traffic radar and weather warning function; online-based services for the use of social networks as well as entertainment offers such as Spotify, AUPEO!, Stitcher, Deezer, Audible, Napster/Rhapsody, TuneIn and GoPro. New customisation options are the interior equipment feature MINI Yours Interior Style Piano Black illuminated including the back-lit trim area on the front passenger side and the Piano Black Exterior option with high-gloss black surrounds for the headlamps, the rear lights and the radiator grille. The latest additions to the range of options and accessories include the telephony option with wireless charging, the MINI logo projection on the driver’s side, the customisable products of the MINI Yours Customised range as well as numerous MINI Connected digital services. Basically, it’s a playground for techies and car enthusiasts. When passion for motor racing is the driving force and intense open-air pleasure the goal, the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible has more flair and purpose than Queen Dany trying to reach Westeros in Game of Thrones. fact magazine

LONDON SOUL On a recent weekend visit to the brand new Bluewaters Dubai, FACT’s David Tapley finds a split level venue with immediate likability, distinct quirkiness and a menu to match, welcome to The London Project.
fact magazine
81
• NEW IN TOWN
T
he London Project’s ground floor is dedicated to cafe culture, with a podium already in place for a soon-to-be installed coffee roaster affectionally referred to as Queenie which will be adorned with a huge crown, hanging from the ceiling. The social space also features a chiseled portrait of Margaret Busby, Britain’s first black female book publisher, and a living tree that leads upstairs, where in the canopy you’ll discover the gin garden… It’s this distinct quirkiness that adds character to the space and the upstairs reveals a number of additional surprises including a podcast room and a private dining terrace which holds the best vantage point in the entire restaurant. With al fresco terraces on both levels, we slide into the only remaining outside table offering pleasant views over the beach at JBR and skydivers with their coloured parachutes drifting back down to earth. The first thing we note as we peruse the menu is the pleasing Brit Pop soundtrack and the aroma of fish and chips that provide us with immediate nostalgic pangs for home. The concept is sharing style and the dishes, though not stereotypically British (you won’t find any toad in the hole or shepherds pie here) are said to draw inspiration from the flavours of London’s 32 boroughs. The hodgepodge of dishes are akin to a trip to London’s Borough Market, a foodie’s paradise renowned for quality cuisine and the championing of locally-sourced ingredients. This is why you’ll find dishes like a South Pacific-inspired Ika Mata Ceviche (AED65) sitting beside Nordic Cured Salmon (AED70) and Slow Cooked Lamb Bao (AED75). We however begin with the Strawberry and Avocado Salad (AED90), an artistic plate of spiralised cucumber, toasted macadamia nuts and avocado puree. Texturally the plate is impressive and the strawberries are undeniably sweet but the salad is not sufficiently dressed and lacks depth. By contrast the Pulled Beef Soft Shell Tacos (AED70) are wonderful. Served in a purple potato tortilla and generously topped with black garlic mayonnaise, the braised beef has a slight saltiness that works to bring the plate together. The Heirloom Tomato Burrata (AED75) is a dish we find hard to resist on any menu, but the team at The London Project have managed to really elevate the Italian cheese via a smoked raspberry sorbet, a sprinkling of basil oil and an abundance of locally grown heirloom tomatoes. It’s a winning dish in terms of both flavour and presentation and the sweetness from the sorbet masterfully offsets the acidity of the tomatoes and works well in conjunction with the creamy burrata. With no main courses to speak of aside from a small selection of chargrilled steaks, we continue with additional sharing plates. The Buttermilk Chicken (AED55) with a chipotle sauce is succulent and well-seasoned with a crisp batter that is often hard to perfect and works as showcase of how fried chicken should be prepared. The London Project also offers a choice of four flatbreads and we find it difficult to resist the Wagyu Panchia (AED110) generously layering cold cuts and arugula upon a crisp base slathered in tomato sauce. 82
fact magazine
The simplicity of many of the dishes and their focus on quality ingredients is what makes the dining experience at The London Project so enamouring, though the final dessert course is a story of two halves. The Pistachio & Coconut (AED50) is a texturally impressive choice bringing together pistachio sponge, coconut mousse, burnt lime marshmallow and crystallised rose. As individual elements the flavours impress, but for us when taken as a whole, there is just far too much going on. The Gin Garden (AED55) though is fantastic in its utilisation of a butterfly shaped vanilla yogurt parfait, with strawberry sorbet a yogurt crisp and a potent gin granita. As one of the first licensed premises in Bluewaters, The London Project already has quite a crowd and feels innovative. Bringing something so different into Dubai’s over-saturated dining scene is no easy task and even though the restaurant recently opened, we believe the concept has the potential to be HUGE. From botanical juniper concoctions, to craft hops and ethically sourced coffee, The London Project has done a wonderful job in injecting the vibrant heartbeat of the UK capital onto a manmade island in Dubai while encapsulating the bohemian feeling of places like Dalston, Hoxton and Shoreditch. Trust this East Londoner when I say you’re going to enjoy this place. ✤

THAI TREASURE When a hotel has gone all out to design a venue that literally transports you to the place from which its cuisine originates, you know you’re in for a memorable dining experience. This is what the FACT team immediately felt upon entering Bambooda at Roda Al Bustan…

ridges, waterways and exotic trees all make up the interior of Bambooda; it’s a venue that gets you talking even before the menu arrives. We’re sat on a table directly besides the restaurant’s stream which is full of small fish casually swimming by and adding a sense of the outdoors to your dining experience. Bambooda evokes the true essence of a Thai village – if you’ve ever been to Thailand, you’ll know what we’re talking about. Lush greenery, colourful blooms, moody wood and more somber tones are all punctuated with Thai huts alongside waterfalls and bridges. It’s a wonder that this place exists within the walls of a hotel – it’s stunning. Once you’ve been able to take in your surroundings, get ready for the warm service. Staff are very friendly and eager for you to try their food – everyone speaks with real enthusiasm for Thai cuisine and all of its distinctive flavours and ingredients. For starters, we opt for something that we’ve never tried at a Thai restaurant; Corn Cake, which is deep fried crispy corn cake with red curry paste, served with chilli sauce, alongside the usual tasty calling of the Homemade Dim Sum – chicken, shrimp and crab meat parcels served with sweet soya and fried garlic; and to top this off, there’s the Som Tam – Papaya Salad, which is a Thai staple of grated, crunchy green papaya with crushed peanuts, lime dressing and dried shrimps. The Corn Cake is an instant hit; beautiful flavours are packed neatly into well-sized snacks, excellent for vegetarians too. The Dim Sum is devoured within minutes and the Papaya Salad utterly crisp and fresh – we’re off to a great start. For mains, we kept things simple yet delicious. First up there was the Nuea Phad Prik Thai Dum-Beef with Black Pepper Sauce; tender beef wok-fried with onion, carrot, capsicum and black pepper sauce. With a helping of jasmine rice, think of this dish as a warm hug from the inside. The meat was cooked to perfection and cloaked with all the great flavours that you would expect from a tasty Thai dish

– and it wasn’t too heavy either, which we really appreciated. The second main was a seafood favourite: Kung Yang Bambooda – the marinated grilled tiger prawns in garlic with spicy lime sauce. Not the kind of prawns you’ll find at the supermarket – these were big and juicy, and an absolute joy to break into. The dipping sauce added a lovely tanginess and kick to each bite – highly recommended. What’s great about the menu at Bambooda is that every dish has a “chilli factor” marked next to it in the form of red chillies, so you can request your choice to be prepared to suit your preferred spice level. There is also allergy information and a very decent selection of vegetarian dishes – every single palate is catered for. Though we didn’t make it to dessert – alas, our full bellies gave in to ordering a smooth cup of green tea – what did stand out was the very creative-sounding Mo Kaeng Cha Thai; Red Thai Tea Crème Brulee with Seasame Tuile. On our next visit, we’ll be trying this out for sure. Bambooda was full with couples, solo diners, families and groups celebrating
birthdays. We can see why it appeals to such a wide range of guests – it has a very relaxed and zen vibe that makes you forget you’re in a hotel, the décor is one that you’ll constantly post across your instagram, and the service is brilliant to match the quality of the food served up. If it’s a traditionally Thai experience you’re looking for, this venue ticks ALL the boxes. ✤

One of our tasty dining picks this month comes from a place that has become synonymous with good food, good service and a very instagrammable venue. FACT revisits Mekong at Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort for a feast that touches every sense…

lending various Asian cuisines into a neat menu isn’t always the best-executed plan at restaurants. However, Mekong might just be the exception. We walk in on a Sunday evening to find that the restaurant is already pretty packed with tanned tourists and perfectly-prim families on holiday at the resort. In fact, many are there to enjoy a night of exotic flavours as part of their half board package – and we don’t mind the company. It’s nice to see a venue on The Palm being enjoyed by so many on a weekday. We’re greeted by the friendliest staff and are quickly seated on a large table around the central dining structure. The venue is authentically Asian, adorned in Buddha statues, prints of fierce tigers, hanging gold bells, and pillars artistically covered in floral designs resembling faraway temples and palaces. Outside, there’s a very fitting “Rickshaw Terrace” wherein your seat is actually a two-wheel rickshaw carriage – it’s creative without being tacky – we like it. We also like how the meal begins. A complimentary one-bite appetiser arrives at the table – Miang Kham – basically, Thailand’s answer to India’s paan. A round wooden tray carries six tiny parts with different ingredients which we’re advised to pile into the betal leaf. There’s a sour component in lime, a crunchy addition from red onion, a nutty toasted factor with peanuts and shaved coconut, and the bold tastes of spicy ginger and chillies. You grab a little of everything, drop it in the betal leaf along with a little sweet-salty paste – wrap it up and off you go. The key is to eat it in one go and the goal is to have every one of your taste buds stimulated before your menu choices arrive. It’s interactive and gets every table of diners around us talking. We skip the cold appetisers for heartier, warm options. Though Thai cuisine takes centre stage at Mekong, the menu has a good amount of influences from China and Vietnam too. So, first up is the mammoth Dim Sum Platter which is absolutely on point for sharing between two people. Made up of jiaozi, prawn hakaw, vegetable dumpling, shrimp dumpling, chicken wonton and vegetable spring roll – there’s an excellent mix of flavours and textures, all accompanied by various sauces. This is followed by a real standout dish; the traditional Tom Yum Goong – Spicy Prawn Soup. It’s just the right sized portion and there is no stinginess with the ingredients. Fresh prawn swims alongside mushroom in a concoction of lemongrass, chilli, coriander, galangal, kaffir lime leaves and evaporated milk. We practically inhale the bowl – it’s just the cure you need on a winter’s evening. The mains follow suit; say hello to the best Steamed Sea Bass you’ll ever lay eyes on. Sitting elegantly in a dish enveloped with bok choi, spring onion, broccoli, crispy garlic oil, and served with a side of the most flavourfully rich seafood chilli dipping sauce – this is one of those menu items that will make you seriously consider going pescatarian, pronto. The fish is tender and slides effortlessly onto our plates. If you’re there for the fiery and more unusual, opt for the Gaeng Phed Thai Red Curry with “Ped Yang” roasted duck. A mix that we were intrigued by, there’s everything from lychee to pineapple, red grape and cherry tomatoes in here, alongside sweet basil leaves, coconut milk, and eggplant, all cooked in the authentic 90

Thai red curry paste. It’s hard to describe the many “mmmhs” and “aaahs” that were expressed after each spoonful of this intricate and very delicious curry. Alas, there was a slight come down in the Beef Short Ribs – they were the least impressive dish of the night. Though cooked beautifully, we couldn’t get on board with the very bland flavours – especially in comparison to the other two very strong mains. Things take a turn with dessert though. It helps that every dish has the flag of which country it originates from. So, naturally, we opt for the more unfamiliar choice: the Mekong Mist which was hands down the dish of the night – made up of coconut ice cream, mini fruits, mango sabayon and toasted coconut – it was a literal holiday in Thailand. SO yummy! We finish with tea to wash down what has been one of the most consistent meals we’ve had in Dubai, for a long time. Service is top-notch throughout and the ambience is casual meets intimate, where the food on your plate is continuously the topic of conversation. ✤

I
f you haven’t heard of the name Linda Meredith, listen up. Those in search of something genuine and resultsdriven should really take note of the lady who is widely referred to as the “Queen of Facials” – she and her products are sought out by celebrities and have the reputation for creating the very best in luxury skincare. There are only a handful of wellness venues in the UAE that offer Linda Meredith-approved treatments and the sprawling spa at Address Downtown is one of the few. Before I get back to the facial, let’s talk about this unbelievable space. Imagine walking into a larger-than-life parlour with an elegant and warm changing area, floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing gorgeous views of Downtown Dubai, and a relaxation area that you could easily spend hours in, sipping on hot tea and indulging on healthy nibbles like dates and walnuts – sounds too good to be true. It’s not. This is real life and it’s waiting for guests to disconnect and dive into at Address Downtown. Through an adjoining door, you’ll be led to the treatment room and, ladies, we have the extra luxury of having the most stunning vistas of the Dubai Fountain and Burj Khalifa on our dedicated side of the spa – pat on the back for whoever designed this layout.
After a quick consultation, highlighting concerns like oily, acne-prone skin and dullness to be the main concerns, I sip my welcome drink and slip into a comfy robe and slippers. My friendly therapist Melissa takes me to what can only be described as a contender for the best treatment room I’ve ever accommodated in a spa. She draws the curtains and my jaw drops to the floor in awe of the sight in front of me. It’s a moment of overwhelming humbleness meets relaxing vibes – the view is SO instagrammable that I couldn’t resist whipping my phone out (find the image in question on instagram: @factmagazine). I tell Melissa that my complexion is a little congested and I’ve had a few breakouts due to general life stress and weather changes. My t-zone in particular is dry and the skin appears quite lacklustre. I need some serious magic. Melissa is professional and confident in her explanation and belief in the Linda Meredith O2 Facial. She reassures me that by the end of the treatment, my complexion will appear balanced, brighter and glowing. She talks me through the different steps, and really vouches for the immediate results that are achieved straight after this specific facial. fact magazine

After a lovely foot scrub, I lay down on a super comfy bed with lots of cushioning, and Melissa begins with a gentle cleanse of the face – removing any makeup and dirt. A deeper cleanse and scrub follow, targeting dead skin cells which is then elevated with a vitamin enriched serum combined with Beta Glycan, which stimulates the formation of collagen, plumping the skin. The face is then steamed to open pores and extractions are done. This is followed by a natural micro-peel serum which removes dead cells and cleans deep beneath the surface. Then comes the part I’ve been waiting for. Oxygen is applied all over the face and décolletage in small on and off motions – it feels cool and refreshing. Oxygen, I learn, is one of nature’s most powerful healing elements and has been used in the medical industry on various skin conditions for many years. This Linda Meredith procedure infuses oxygen into the skin; to increase healthy cell regeneration, and visibly reduce lines and wrinkles. If you opt for the 75-minute version of this therapy, a sensational collagen or hyaluronic mask is applied to the complexion while your shoulders and scalp are massaged – it’s total bliss. Each Linda Meredith product contains its own potent combination of essential oils, vitamins and active ingredients. Her revolutionary facial treatments support the skin from the inside out, feeding every layer with essential nutrients to reveal healthy, glowing and younger-looking skin. I didn’t believe the hype until, of course, Melissa wakes me up from a relaxing slumber and I’m able to bring myself upright to look in the mirror for the first time. Without exaggerating – wow. noticeable difference is in the skin texture and the brightness in complexion – it worked just like magic for the dullness – and right away too. Facials often promise you the sun, moon and stars – meaning, unrealistic results that fade away quickly. I have to hold my hands up and say that the Linda Meredith O2 Facial is somewhat of a game-changer. Half an hour in the relaxation area, downing my tea and treats, I left the beautiful spa at Address Downtown feeling ready for my close-up! ✤
