Because, let’s be honest, weekends were made for lie-ins and if I’m going to feast, I want to do it with a fresh face and with a real mood for good food. Thankfully, weekend brunch culture is given a whole new meaning in Dubai – and I’m here for it. Brunches are such a great way to take a peek into what a restaurant has to offer. Whether it’s sprawling buffets, big enough to feed an entire street or sharing-style portions that come straight to your table, rest-assured that this city has got it all… and then some. With that in mind and your brunch checklist at hand, turn to p19 and let our Best of the Brunch delight you with nothing but choices galore. Hospitality is, of course, what it’s all about in the UAE. There is no other place in the world where I’ve experienced service quite like here. From food to hotels, the high standards carry into all sectors and areas of life. The Middle East’s first ever indoor multipurpose arena, located at Dubai’s City Walk by Meraas witnessed regional superstars, Rashed Al Majid and Majid Al Mohandis perform to a sell-out crowd on January 30 whilst American icon, John Legend – fresh from his performance at the Grammy Awards - returned to Dubai with a stunning show on January 31. utong brings a fresh take on Chinese cuisine with its occasionally fiery Northern Chinese dishes, dim sum and cocktails. The new restaurant features a bespoke interior design inspired by the heritage of the Silk Road where Arabic and Chinese influences merge. Hutong’s Dubai menu incorporates signature dishes from London and New York as well as new dishes created exclusively for the Dubai restaurant. The signature Red Lantern is served to the table in a traditional Chinese wood basket overflowing with red Sichuan dried chilies. Crispy pieces of soft-shell crab nestle between them, infused with spices and lip-numbing chili essence. Hutong’s Roasted Peking Duck with Pancakes is delicately carved at the table. The whole duck is carefully prepared for 24 hours using a traditional recipe said to have been developed over one hundred years ago for the Emperor, making the duck skin crispy on the outside while the meat remains moist, tender and flavourful. Hutong’s dim sum, recently praised by The New York Times, is also main feature, with the famous Dim Sum Platter served at lunch and at dinner. Amongst the dishes specially created for the Dubai restaurant is Suen Cai Yu - a Seabass and pickled cabbage crispy dumpling, and Hamour Fillet, locally sourced and served in a chilli broth. For dessert, a playful take on the traditional Chinese favourite, Bao and Soy Milk - a white
chocolate covered, sesame and caramel mousse resembles a “bao” and is served on top of a praline sesame crunch. Sprinkled with lime zest to resemble scallions, the “bao” is complemented by a perfect scoop of house-made soy milk ice cream served in a marble and glass “cone.” A centerpiece of the Hutong experience is the bar. Hutong’s intriguing cocktail list complements its cuisine by incorporating Chinese spices and herbs. The list features complex and elevated libations, such as signature cocktail, Comfortably Numb, mixed with vanilla spirit, lychee liqueur, Sichuan pepper honey and ruby red grapefruit. One of the unique focal points is the iconic and traditional Wishing Tree positioned in the centre of the restaurant, a striking element that is featured in both Hutong restaurants in London and Hong Kong. Packed with different tones and genres, My Spy is a movie that adults AND kids will enjoy to the fullest. Entertainment specialist Peter Segal, whose career has to date brought him within sniffing distance at the Oscars, created a formulaic yet eccentric family action-comedy. His star in My Spy is the former Wrester, Bautista, who’s in the role of the CIA agent JJ. It seems like Bautista is picking up the reins from Dwayne Johnson as the lovable tough guy with a heart of gold and we love how his character develops over the story from the tough guy to the caring one. With plenty of laugh out loud moments, expect some rude humor, crude jokes, and dangerous explosions, gunfire and fist fights.

Talking about his marriage with Hailey, the lyrics of all 17 tracks give an insight into the superstar’s matured and emotional psyche, and the personal growth that he has experienced over the last few years. Especially Intentions, featuring Quavo, which serves the many praises of Hailey and proclaims Justin’s intentions to marry her. He compliments her looks, her kindness, her cooking, and her parents for the way that she was raised. While Intentions has a romantic vibe, Yummy is more fun and funkier and has definitely taken over the radio waves. So, whether you’re looking for a melodic backdrop to an intimate dinner or you’re just wanting to shake your hips on the dance floor, there’s really something for everyone on Changes. Guest appearances include Post Malone, Travis Scott, Kehlani and more, and we couldn’t agree more with Bieber, when he said that this is the music he loves the most out of anything he’s created to date.

The Grammy-winning and BRIT and Mercury-Prize nominated artist who gained worldwide fame with her debut album is back on the scene. After the generation-defining hits ‘In For the Kill’ and ‘Bulletproof’, La Roux releases her third album Supervision and delivers, once again, a throwback to a retro 80’s world - one that we find ourselves rather fond of. The Album highlight is Do You Feel, a track that reminds us of Janet Jackson’s 1986 smash hit record ‘Control’. Automatic Driver has a sweet and poppy beat and International Woman of Leisure is reminiscent of ‘Bulletproof’, with icy vocal tones and stabbing synth beats. In general, Supervision is a bit samey and repetitive compared to La Roux’s second album ‘Trouble In Paradise’, but she has still created something remindful of an era of music that we truly love whilst her unique overall sound remains intact and that’s why we love it!

QUOZ ARTS FEST 2020 The 8th edition of Quoz Arts Fest, the region's biggest arts and culture festival organised by Alserkal, took place on January 24 and 25. The festival welcomed 38,000 visitors over the weekend, and explored the theme ‘In Search Of…’, celebrated with the thinkers and makers from the music, art, design, and performance realms in the region. Highlights from the Quoz Arts Fest 2020 programme included a free concert by JordanianPalestinian shamstep band 47Soul, the exhibition New National Dish: UAE, Reel Palestine Film Festival screenings, contemporary dance performances by Block Universe, and much more.

With a luxurious King bedroom, walk-in closet and stunning marbled bathroom featuring a stand-alone bath, rain shower and double vanity desk, this room truly rolls out the red-carpet. We love all the neat spaces, giving guests so many great options to curl up and watch a movie, read a book or get some shut eye. The mini bar is one of our favourite features, which is in fact a full-sized compartmentalised trolley filled with goodies. The dressing table with “influencer-ready” lighting and makeup mirror is an absolutely glamorous addition. Amenities by Marlin + Goetz are a real treat too. We couldn’t find anything to fault in this room except for the telephone line connection which we had a few problems with – but even that, the staff were prompt to call in and fix. Brimming with history, stories and glamour, Paramount Hotel Dubai is a true blockbuster that features eight experiential dining concepts that promise an unparalleled culinary experience. Aside from Malibu Deck, there’s Pacific Groove, a Californian bar and restaurant that is synonymous with coastal and luxurious aesthetic. The restaurant offers a culinary curation of sizzling grilled seafood, woodfired steaks, fresh salads and a Raw bar. Flashback is the surreptitious speakeasy bar and lounge that serves custom cocktails by craft mixologists in an intimate Hollywood setting, complete with moving classic posters and two private rooms. The Cheat is an exceptionally unique Paramount Chocolate Lab; that compliments the all-day dining restaurant, The Stage; and an artisan Café and bakery, The Craft Table; plus, the lobby lounge and café. The hotel also features exciting elements such as immersive video walls in the lobby, PAUSE Spa and one of the most comprehensive Fitness Centres that we’ve experienced in a hotel, alongside stateof-the-art meetings and events facilities as well as their signature co-working Work/Play suites. It’s home to 428 rooms, including 332 spacious King and Twin rooms, 36 luxury suites including a Presidential Suite and a Royal Suite, all featuring private balconies, fabulous furnishings with specially-selected details that provide a taste of the culture of Abu Dhabi and – more importantly - those heart-stopping, utterly instagrammable views. We find ourselves in the sprawling Pearl Suite only to quickly realise that THIS is the accommodation for which the saying “where the magic happens” – can be applied in all its glory. And, of course, we mean the magic of the 100sqm of space; having a grand living room with its own family-sized dining table, huge 65” HDTV, and beautiful, comfy couches to curl up on; not one, but two large private balconies with the most awe-inspiring views over the iconic Corniche and surrounding buildings – you have to see it for yourself to believe it; and a gorgeous bedroom and bathroom layout that makes us wish we could just move in already and live here.

The mini bar is stacked with all of our favourite snacks and drinks, and plenty of water bottles which is always a good sign. There’s a Nespresso machine and kettle with a lovely selection of tea and coffee, whilst the individually controlled heat and a/c for the different rooms within your suite is a thoughtful and much appreciated touch. Talking of details, we love the double vanity in the bathroom and how the closet is designed within this space – meaning you don’t have to keep going out of the bathroom to try on different outfits (it’s the small things that count!). The standalone bathtub is also another feature that ties in the easy, elegant living and elevated vibe of the hotel. It’s more than ideal for a long, warm soak after a day of exploring or lounging, just before bed! There’s even a separate work space in the bedroom which makes for a nice place to get cosy with your laptop – that is if work even comes to mind! It’s great to see that there’s an abundant of plug sockets dotted around the room – enough to put all our devices on charge at the same time. We’re especially struck by how convenient and contemporary the fixings and features are in the suite; I’m talking curtains that will open and close and the push of a button and an array of lighting options to suit every mood. All of this can be controlled from your bedside – what better reason to have a lie-in? And if – that’s a big if – you actually manage to leave this sanctuary, suite guests can also enjoy Grand Club access with complimentary breakfast, all day tea and coffee and complimentary drinks and appetisers (between 6pm and 8pm). Italy. The team at Verso deliver an authentic experience through the food and culture of what is undoubtedly in our top three Italian restaurants in Abu Dhabi. From the moment we enter, we're engulfed by the aroma of the Italian kitchen. Hints of freshly baked bread, cheese and basil (from Verso's very own herb garden) can all be identified as we meander our way past display cases stuffed full of Italian goodies. This feast for the eyes continues throughout the restaurant space with shelves stacked high with cookery books, olive oil bottles and ornaments. Wooden tables are laden with a selection of cheeses and the setting has been meticulously designed with even the smallest of details - the tiled floors, the ceramic drinking cups - and an expansive outside terrace overlooking a glorious cabanaflanked infinity pool. The trick here is to order and enjoy your meal – slowly and socially. Special lunch and dinner menus mean that food is kept interesting and exciting but, more importantly, authentic. Insalata mista, noci e formaggio di capra is a plate of juicy heirloom tomatoes, artichokes, walnuts and fresh goat’s cheese that will satisfy all your salad cravings. The traditional staple of Parmigiana di melanzane - baked eggplant parmigiana – is exactly what we hoped it would be – cheesy and comforting with a simple tomato sauce. The Arancini al sugo, Sicilian rice balls with meat sauce filling, is another quality starter made with ingredients sourced directly from Italy. It was, however, the Risotto ai funghi di bosco, made up of Wild forest mushrooms, thyme and parmesan that managed to silence us as we scooped up spoonfuls with gusto. Cooked in the wood fired oven visible across the gleaming marble counter tops of the open show kitchen, a half and half pizza (margherita and diavola) is perfection. It's the sourdough which is key and the flavours of the crisp base leave a lasting impression over the delicious toppings. The Torta della Nonna is a superb concoction of ricotta lemon tart, pine seeds, and forest berries sherbet – highly recommended. Verso is all about homely Italian cooking at good value-for-money – plus, a special shout out to the staff, who are some of the most professional, knowledgeable, and friendly that we’ve encountered in a hotel eatery. In the evening, we head to Pearl Lounge, where elegance exudes from every corner of the room. It is a lobby lounge, a café, a shop, a creperie, and a bar all in one – and we’re here for it. It’s a place to meet and talk, eat or wait, think or drink. Or simply to pause by yourself to relax. The menu is a gracious offering of filling international cuisine, where salads and sandwiches reign supreme. It’s the live crepe station and sophisticated desserts display that stops us in our tracks. We stock up on baked goods and Turkish delight to enjoy with our signature tea blend. Again, it is the lovely ladies who serve us that really light up this place with their earnest presence. You’ll also find a silk-route culinary journey in Sahha – open for breakfast and dinner, as well as a classy bar meets lounge in Lexx – great for pre-dinner drinks. 62

ith almost 120 years of vehicle manufacturing experience, the renowned General Motors Company (GMC) brand has designed everything from trucks to military vehicles to vans and of course, SUVs. Founded in 1902, this USA-based motor company has had many decades to hone their craft, producing ever more impressive and popular on-road vehicles. GMC first began to grab the attention of the American public back in 1916 when a GMC truck crossed the country from Seattle to New York City in thirty days. This was a major achievement at the time. Then in 1926, a two-ton GMC truck was driven from New York to San Francisco in five days and 30 minutes. These accomplishments, along with the brand producing over half a million trucks for the US Armed Forces during the Second World War, ensured GMC’s respected reputation as a wellestablished American motoring institution. During the years that followed, the brand began to place ever-increasing value on designing vehicles for public use. These included pickup trucks, motorhomes and eventually, SUVs. These vehicles have since gained huge popularity and enjoyed success across the globe. Recently, the arrival of their second-generation 2019 Terrain Denali to the Middle East has caught many driving enthusiasts’ attention and we could not have been more excited. This month, FACT seized the opportunity to thoroughly inspect the latest Terrain Denali as well as to take it out on the roads to see what it was capable of. The first time we laid eyes on the Terrain’s updated exterior,

we were taken by its bold and modern design. The master craftsmen at GMC have evolved the brand’s signature cues with stronger and more sculpted elements. Quality features on the latest model will include the signature satin chrome grille, along with Denali-specific accents. Amongst these are the body-colour facias, lower trim, bright roof-mounted side rails, chrome outside mirrors and body-side moulding. As standard, the Denali will also sport LED headlights as well as 19-inch, ultra-bright, machined aluminium wheels. Other models including the Terrain SLE and SLT will feature signature LED running lamps and tail lamps along with bi-functional HID headlamps. The SLE sits on 17-inch wheels whilst the SLE AWD and SLT models are fitted with 18-inch wheels as standard. It was also clear to us that the small, luxury, four-door SUV has been crafted with aerodynamics in mind as can been seen by its clean lines and streamlined appearance. This wind tunnel tested vehicle’s distinctive profile has been designed to slice through the air with the utmost efficiency, minimising drag and aiding fuel consumption. To add to the already striking appearance of the new Terrain, is the availability of eleven exterior colours including the new Emerald Metallic, Sedona Metallic and Smokey Quartz Metallic. Thoroughly impressed by the exterior of the Denali, we turned our collective gaze to the interior. Like the exterior, the 2019 Terrain’s purposeful interior makes a statement and serves as a fundamental component of the vehicle’s heightened emphasis on refinement and

functionality. Premium internal features include an authentic aluminium trim, soft-touch materials on the instrument panel and doors, as well as active noise cancellation. These have all been seamlessly integrated into the interior design to ensure a luxurious experience. A unique trim tint colour is present throughout the vehicle and Denali-specific logos and piping has been included on the ventilated front seats. Additional standard features include a Skyscape power sunroof, Bose premium 7-speaker sound system and a hands-free programmable liftgate. The centre console has been expanded and houses a pass-through storage compartment underneath. A flat-folding front passenger seat and flat-folding, heated rear seats allow for easier cargo loading as well as the stowing of longer items. This adds greater versatility and functionality to the Terrain, especially for those who may be used to road trips, camping or time away that requires packing a small family and all their luggage into the vehicle. There are also under-floor compartments in the cargo area for secure storage. The new GMC Terrain range keeps occupants connected with a seveninch and available eight-inch-diagonal infotainment system. This system is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. As impressed with the interior as we were with the exterior, it was time to engage the ignition to see what this new-generation Terrain was truly capable of on the roads. Two petrol engines are available for the Terrain range including a 1.5-liter as well as the Terrain-Denali’s 2.0-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with stop/start technology. This piece of machinery can produce 252 hp @ 5500 rpm and 260 lbft of torque @ 2500 – 4500 rpm. It also houses a nine-speed automatic 9T50, electronically-controlled transmission with overdrive as standard. All of this combined with the Denali’s 70

All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) capabilities, translates to a powerful and fun-filled driving experience. The 2019 Terrain comes standard with GMC’s driver-controllable Traction Select system, which offers a selection of choices for different driving conditions. Elements such as the throttle responses are optimised for the selected driving mode. AWD models include a FWD mode that disconnects the AWD system to minimise drag and optimise fuel economy, while the AWD mode offers all the benefits of an active AWD system. We found the handling, acceleration, cornering and breaking of the Terrain to be smooth and of a very high standard - thoroughly enjoying our time on the roads, whether on the highway or inner-city streets, in this exceptional vehicle. Located just off the main lobby lies an entirely new notion of dining to the city - MasterChef, the TV Experience Restaurant, and FACT’s David Tapley took a seat at their Showtime Brunch… fact magazine

hile this may not be the first restaurant to open in Dubai based upon a television show, following hot on the heels of Gordon Ramsey’s Hell’s Kitchen on Bluewaters Island. MasterChef the TV Experience is a world-first restaurant concept, based upon and powered by the global television phenomenon and appears to commit more fully to its central concept, taking inspiration from the reality cooking show in more than just decor and thematics. The compact restaurant space offers the feeling of stepping onto the MasterChef set and fans will be familiar and enamoured with the exposed brick walls, industrial ducting a large ticking clock that looks above diners. An open-show kitchen with expansive pass and a feature wall with an illuminated MasterChef logo make for ideal spots to get those sought-after Instagram shots. Outside there’s also a pleasant terrace flanked by vegetation. Our first visit to the MasterChef kitchen was for the newly launched Showtime Brunch a seated table brunch that offers a set menu of dishes from past Master Chef contestants. Call is a screen to plate concept if you will, with an unlimited selection of sharing starters and desserts plus the choice of one main course per guests. With three brunch menus offered, including both vegetarian and vegan menus, it’s fantastic to see a restaurant catering so well to dietary requirements and this is indicated by a near-full restaurant when we visit. The brunch menu is curated by finalists and champions from various seasons of MasterChef and offers brunchers with a vast selection of dishes to select from. Promptly seated the onslaught of plates begins almost immediately and accompanied by friendly service our table is soon filled with the likes of crispy prawn bhajis with avocado, fragrant lemongrass and beetroot skewers and pulled beef chilaquiles. The baked brie with pecan and maple drizzle from Shaun O’Neale, MasterChef US Champion Season 7 is a near-perfect dish which brings a beautiful sweetness to the homely feel of the melted cheese. Similarly, the asparagus and gochujang pancakes from Tamara Graffen, MasterChef Australia Season 6 finalist are an interesting savoury take on the breakfast pancake that showcases Asian flavours to wonderful effect. While the appetisers can be re-ordered in unlimited quantities we’d suggest holding back as the brunch offers a plethora of options outside of the first course. A selection of seven main courses are offered (from which diners select one each) and vary from the extraordinary burger of Wagyu, potato bun, wasabi and sriracha, to chicken satay or steak and eggs. Our pick had to be the fried chicken eggs Benedict, created by Jason Devonshire, the winner of MasterChef UK season 12. Boasting seasoned fried buttermilk chicken topped 84

with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce, the dish is exactly what we’d expect from a brunch. With a good selection of beverages and a live band, atmosphere builds in the MasterChef ‘studio’ as the afternoon progresses and by the time we’re presented with mojito meringues amongst billows of dried ice, we are well and truly stuffed! That’s not to say we didn’t indulge further with a slice of rich salted chocolate torte and a feather light crème brûlée French toast. While not a party brunch per se, the Showtime Brunch is definitely one for foodies who appreciate good food coupled with a vibrant atmosphere. Outside of the brunch MasterChef the TV Experience also offers Chef residencies with Elena Duggan, MasterChef Season 8 Champion at the helm of the restaurant and presenting a speciallycurated menu. There’s also the Mystery Box which allows adventurous diners to pick their choice of up to five ingredients and have a dish created especially for them. MasterChef the Television Experience is an interesting concept that is already proving a popular choice (so make sure you book ahead). Fully committing to its television roots there’s no other dining experience quite like this in Dubai. ✤

In a city swarming with nightlife destinations that promise you the world and more, FACT was on a quest to find a place that does exactly what it says on the tin. We wanted good music in a cool spot where the crowd was having a visibly fun time. It’s Sky 2.0 that delivered all of this, and then some.

hen you want to impress with your nightlife choice in Dubai, Sky 2.0 should be at the top of the list. The super-cool club doesn’t do things by halves. Hailing from Beirut with the mantra of celebrating the Lebanese capital’s sleepless party energy, Sky 2.0 is a striking venue that will amaze you from the moment you cast eyes on it. The venue has a gorgeous structure that looks like someone has dropped a UFO in the heart of the city’s buzzing creative hub, d3. Enigmatic and designed to perfection, SKY 2.0’s architecture is collaborative genius between Chafic El Khazen and French architect Michelle Sarfati. The open-air club provides an interactive experience by employing modern technologies; bendable screens, grand lighting design, and a lilting sound system that wraps around the walls of the sphere-shaped venue – bringing a completely elevated experience for guests. With expectations as high as the sky (pun intended), we walked into the swish club at 11pm on a Wednesday night. This is the venue’s hugely popular ladies night that is aptly dubbed DSTRKT. Ladies receive complimentary select drinks at the bar all night from 10pm to 4am – no strings attached. With a choice of spirits, grape and hops, DSTRKT Wednesdays is well worth a visit with your best gal squad for an early “into the weekend” party. With famed Dubai DJs, Dany Neville, Sir Taz, and others at the helm, the music was set to be right – we’re talking throwback RnB and hip hop leading you into the night and a mix of more old-school plus current tracks covering everything from RnB to afro beats, Latino sounds and sing-along hip hop tunes. Think early noughties Ja Rule and Ashanti with a little bit of Drake and C Breezy, and not forgetting the biggest hits from the last year, including Burna Boy, Teyana Taylor, Cardi B and more. There is absolutely a jam for every music lover of this genre. In fact, we found it hard to sit down and were up on our feet the whole night. But, before we even realised just how great the music was, it was the cool-as-fudge get up and effects around the club that caught our attention. DSTRKT sees life-size traffic lights hanging from the air whilst mega projections show breathtaking environments and concepts that pay homage to a whole era of music movement – there’s a makeshift “Candy Shop” – no doubt, a nod to the 50 Cent hit and even some funky fresh American Cinematheque signage reminiscent of the vintage light box with block alphabet letters; here it’s an ode to “Straight out of Compton”, “Boyz in the Hood” and “Training Day”. We can appreciate these thoughtful touches. What we truly enjoyed – and something that is so hard to find in other similar joints – was the hospitality of the staff. From the people on the door to the servers who kept our table full and our glasses overflowing, there was one agreed consensus at our table; the staff at Sky 2.0 were genuine, attentive, and fun. Their energy dispersed over the crowd and there was nothing but good vibes and a positive feeling of pure enjoyment all around. The lack of pretentiousness spoke for itself as the venue filled up fast to full capacity and the crowd was dancing the night away like we haven’t seen in Dubai for a long time. And although the venue is full, it never feels cramped. The tieredlevel design means that you can book tables with full bottle

service and extra benefits for larger groups. The level of service you receive here is also heightened, so it’s highly recommended. One thing that Sky 2.0 avoids is any form of gimmickry. Instead, perfect intervals of choreographed dances on the bar and random blasts of smoke from the fog machines near the DJ booth all add to the electric atmosphere. At one point, the entire venue was flooded with colourful rocket balloons which was definitely a sight to remember. This is the place where evenings pleasantly turn into mornings. It’s cool, it’s instagrammable and it’s our new favourite spot in Dubai. Book yourselves a table and join in. ✤
SKY2.0 is not just about late-night revelry and extravagance, but also encourages local and regional entrepreneurs, artists and creators, dedicating a section in the venue to portray their work. SKY2.0 has collaborated with regional designers to create its first capsule collection for the Dubai Design District club. Aura Headpieces, Bil Arabi, Dima Ayad, Hussein Bazaza, Roberi & Fraud, and Roni Helouhave have all produced a series of pieces in the capsule collection that make up the SKY2.0 experience as perceived by the designers and nod to some of the most iconic moments they have spent in the club. JUNGLE VIBES In recent weeks, the financial centre has got tongues wagging when it comes to what’s hot and what’s not. The current talk of the town appears to be Amazonico, located in the DIFC pavilion; it’s hard to miss the restaurant with its jungle-flag exterior and yellow parasols peeking above the rooftop. Naturally, FACT’s David Tapley couldn’t resist the temptation… fact magazine

A
mazonico opens in Dubai following success in Madrid and more recently, London, in a concept that aims to take diners on a sensory journey along the Amazon River and through Latin America. The multi-level venue is open from lunch until late and makes quite the impression from the moment you enter, as if the natural environment of the rainforest has been transported into the very heart of Dubai. The ground floor features a well stocked bar that materialises from a wall of vegetation like some long forgotten ruin and provides a nice place to relax for a post-work drink. The bar leads out into a lounge which is beautifully decorated with golden stools, sushi counters and a pleasant terrace. A spiral staircase seductivley winds upstairs where you’ll discover the main dining room where supportive columns have been designed to resemble trees and a canopy of foliage hangs from above. A glass show kitchen is home to plenty of activity and is buzzing on the evening that we dine. A cacophony of parrots squawks and the sounds of wildlife are piped through the speakers as intervals throughout the evening and help to complete the feeling of dining with in the depths of the Amazon, but for the ultimate party vibe we’d suggest heading to the rooftop for sundowners. The mixology on offer is as impressive, as the glassware and you can expect to find your drinks served in a vessel-shaped liked a monkey’s head. Amazonico fully commits to it’s jungle theme and the atmosphere and surroundings are exciting and vibrant. The food reflects this feeling too, using traditional ingredients and modern techniques to transport guests to South America, dishes like the Tuberculo des Andes (Andean root roasted in salt crust) or the Ancas de Rana (Fried frogs legs with a habanero mango dressing) make for exciting departures from the Dubai norm and provide the restaurant with a distinct talking point. Our meal begins with the Guacamole con Erizo (AED82) in which the avocado is stuffed with sea urchin before being mixed at the table. The smooth mix is beautifully complemented by crisp green plantain chips, though the flavour of the sea urchin is near impossible to detect. The Hamachi tiradito (AED78) is a pleasant surprise and with the dish prevalent on so many menus throughout the city, the tropical take presented at Amazonico is both memorable and delicious thanks to thin slices of yellowtail marinated in passion fruit. The Japanese Peruvian approach to Nikkei cuisine is apparent in the sushi selection which boasts an impressive Atun Picante (AED105) that features a spicy tuna tartar with green apple, yet it’s the 92

vegetarian Amazonico (AED58) which will have us coming back again. A blend of mango, avocado, coconut and cacao nibs work seamlessly to create a tropical feeling that refreshes the palate with each bite. For main courses, guests can choose from fish, wok fried specialties or charcoal grilled meats. With ten meat options available it was the Hokkaido Wagyu 9+ (AED580) that captured our attention. Cooked to a beautiful medium-rare temperature, the meat was both tender and nicely seasoned, accompanied by an array of side dishes such as yuca y papa, a combination of creamy mashed potato and yuca, and the queso grillado, which is essentially josper grilled cheese and an absolute delight.
