hen #Dubai became our most-searched for term on instagram - that is, just in the FACT office - it was only a matter of time before this happened. If there’s one thing that the Emirati and expat communities in this city have in common, it’s a genuine love for all things Dubai. And so, FACT Dubai was born and there’s only two words to best describe us: fiercely local. To celebrate the launch issue, we’ve got your food, arts, culture, travel and lifestyle needs covered. Bringing a fresh new approach to the Gulf city that definitely has the biggest, the most luxurious and the most creative of everything to offer, we’re excited to touchdown in Dubai with not only a standout monthly magazine, but also the inaugural FACT Dining Awards Dubai. After much success and recognition given out to regional venues, it’s Dubai’s turn to shine on the food and beverage front. Check out the shortlisted nominees on p25. Staying true to our mantra of celebrating local talent, we meet Maisoon Al Saleh, an Emirati artist who’s getting creative both on land and under water. Learn all about her masterpieces on p61. As much of the UAE’s weekend culture is all about hotel hopping, we begin with a staycation at one of the city’s top 5-star hotels: JW Marriott Marquis Dubai (p46) and if that’s not enough, FACT landed an exclusive reservation for the most-wanted seats in town: at the table of Chef Reif Othman for his renowned dining venture, The Experience (p91). From all the team, a HUGE welcome to FACT Dubai – we hope you enjoy the launch issue! Stay in touch with us on twitter (@FACTMagazineME), instagram (@factmagazine), and facebook (FACT Dubai) – we’re partial to a tweet (or five), daily! ☺

WOK’S COOKING? THE NOODLE HOUSE, one of Dubai’s leading homegrown legacy food and beverage concepts, is undergoing its biggest brand relaunch since debuting in 2002 - starting with a completely refreshed dining experience and expansive new menu inspired by Asia’s most popular taste hotspots at its flagship Souk Madinat Jumeirah outlet. From the vibrant hawker stands of Singapore to the bustling street markets of Jakarta, The Noodle House promises a colourful and cultural culinary tour de force, bringing an entire continent of fast, fresh flavours and powerful, vibrant aromas to your table, or delivered right to your door. Whether you roll up your sleeves to grab a bao, slurp a laksa, or chopstick down a mouthful of noodles, the exotic, bold and irresistible flavours of The Noodle House are guaranteed to satisfy the sweet (and sour) cravings. The Noodle House’s refreshed menu, which also includes a brand-new cocktail selection exclusive to its flagship, retains old favourites including Singapore Noodles, Curry Laksa and Wasabi Prawns, but also includes 50 completely new dishes that draw inspiration from Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore. ✤

MUSIC’S HIGHEST POINT Jebel Jais will play host to the UAE’s highest musical event as award-winning Czech musician and film composer Michal Dvořák brings his global tour of Vivaldianno – City of Mirrors to Ras Al Khaimah. TAKING MUSICAL PERFORMANCES TO new heights, Jebel Jais, the UAE’s tallest peak, will host the highest concert in the country this October, when the global sensation Vivaldianno – City of Mirrors descends on the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah. Devised by award-winning Czech musician and film composer, Michal Dvořák, Vivaldianno – City of Mirrors fuses the Baroque masterpieces and compositions of Antonio Vivaldi with 3D visual effects and light shows, propelled by contemporary energy. The one-off event, taking place on October 27, is part of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA), goal of developing lifestyle entertainment across the emirate. The unique event, set at 1600 metres above sea level, will be a dazzling live performance and held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah. “We strive to push the boundaries in our efforts to enhance Ras Al Khaimah’s visitor experience, and this latest event is not only a first for the UAE, it will also provide genuine sensory overload at one of the emirate’s most iconic landmarks,” said Haitham Mattar, CEO, RAKTDA. Vivaldianno – City of Mirrors will assemble a large orchestra to cover classical and art-rock instrumentation on a specially18

constructed mountain stage. Featuring large-format projections in front of and behind the performance areas, the show will boast a complex and sophisticated light design utilising cutting-edge technologies to create an unequalled 3D musical experience. The cast of renowned musicians from all over the world will be supported by complex imagery and choreography, breathing new life and colour into masterpieces including The Four Seasons. “We are retaining the original score while adding modern instruments the way Antonio himself might have included them. The show strives to enforce and emphasise the original music in a contemporary means of expression,” Dvořák noted. Tickets for the one-off performance start from AED300 and are available through Virgin Tickets, and Platinum List. Those looking to make the most of Ras Al Khaimah’s authentic Arabian hospitality in its newest opening can enjoy a 20 per cent discount on standard rooms at Hilton Garden Inn, Ras Al Khaimah, between October 26 and 28. ✤

THE SURREAL FORESTS Artistic and unique exchange Insight into Nature is being held from October 10 to November 7 at The Workshop Dubai, Jumeirah.

NOT EVERY FRIENDSHIP STANDS the test of time, but, we are glad to hear that Fares Jammal and Wissam Moubarak play contraire to this rule, since they are both childhood friends. They’ve been able to join forces to create a work that embodies both their common skills and visions that complement each other like bread and butter. Fares has grown to be a renowned photographer whereas Wissam is a multidisciplinary architect. Nostalgia and remembrance is deep rooted throughout their combined works. While Jamaal was revealing his series of photographs in the dark room, Moubarak was there to swipe onto the negative image with his brush strokes. This pairing made for an eerie monochromatic plasticity outcome, breaking the rules of time, taking still photography into another dimension. We are all for thinking outside the box so they certainly get a thumbs up from us. The Workshop will host a reception on October 10 to showcase exclusive pieces of art, each being a unique production; an impulsively perfected mix of photography and painting on photosensitive panchromatic paper. Art enthusiasts, there’s no need to go back to the drawing board for your plans this month. ✤

Luxurious Heights JW MARRIOTT MARQUIS HOTEL DUBAI FLYING THE HOSPITALITY FLAG HIGH AND PROUD, THE 5-STAR JW MARRIOTT MARQUIS HOTEL DUBAI TAKES STAYCATION ENVY TO COMPLETELY NEW HEIGHTS – LITERALLY. MADE UP OF TWO STUNNING TOWERS IN DUBAI’S BUSINESS BAY AREA, FACT TOOK A MUCH-NEEDED MOMENT TO RELAX AND UNWIND ONLY TO BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED AT EVERY TURN.

W

hen your taxi driver says: “oh, it’s a very, very popular hotel, many people say nice things about it” on the ride to your destination, there’s a sense of relief and excitement in one. This is exactly how we felt on our way to the towering JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai. Not only will we reside in the chilled-out Business Bay neighbourhood on Sheikh Zayed Road, there’s SO much at the property that unless you’re in the city for pure tourist hotspots, there’s absolutely no reason

why you need to leave the hotel until it’s check out time. The UAE is already renowned for its warm hospitality and this is no exception here. We step into a busy lobby area where check-in desks are crowded. However, looking around, the staff are super efficient with allowing guests to make use of the Marriott Rewards priority check-in desk too. This simple gesture is allthe-more reason for us to sign up to the loyalty programme, not to mention the lovely welcome drinks and cold towel presented on arrival. Everyone from the bellboy to the concierge team and front desk staff is eager to help and

make sure your every comfort is met to a high standard. We immediately get the same stressfree vibe that many of us experience on a lazy day off at home – heaven. SUITE DREAMING

We’re directed towards Tower B and shoot up to the 63rd floor. It’s so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. We begin to appreciate the architecture and beautifully modern, sleek design of the hotel when we exit the lift. It’s amazing how there’s a desired level of cosiness balanced with a contemporary ambiance – more boxes ticked. fact magazine

WEEKEND SPOTLIGHT •

This feeling runs right into the breathtaking Executive Suite that we’ll call home for a weekend. And as far as suites go, this is one special set-up. WHERE do we begin? Think snug meets fresh, meets minimalism with a dash of artistic flair. The living area is bigger than most actual rooms in high-rise apartments; it’s decked out with a lovely siting area and a HUGE round dining table which is completely ideal for ordering room service (which we absolutely did!). There extensive mini-bar area is one of the longest counter tops we’ve ever seen in any suite; it’s kitted out with plenty of bottled water, complimentary tea, coffee and nespresso making facilities and a mini-bar with all your usual drinks and snacks. The clever use of a privacy wall to separate the living and bedroom areas is great, especially as the flat screen TV slots in nicely on the living room side with a fully-equipped entertainment hub including DVD player and a crystal-clear sound system. There’s an iPod dock whilst the TV features premium film channels and both international satellite and cable programming – see, no need to leave! Walking into the gorgeous bedroom with floor-toceiling windows, boasting picture-perfect views of the Burj Khalifa, the king-size bed is UNREAL and we go on to make the most of its comfort by taking power naps, siestas and having lie-ins throughout the stay. The walk-in closet is an absolute treat – we wish there was one just like it waiting at home! That’s not even the best bit. Two words: BATHROOM GOALS. You have never seen a more perfect bathtub, double vanity, spacious shower and views for miles than in this bathroom. It’s bigger than most bedrooms we’ve stayed in and carries an airy atmosphere with neutral décor. If there’s one thing you need to do here, it’s taking the longest soak in the deep, oversized tub – we would have happily slept in it! It’s the practical, space and light-filled layout that we loved most about this suite – everything from the number of plug sockets to discreet yet visible amenity boxes was all very well thought out. Bravo for attention to detail. Adding onto that is the luxury of Executive Lounge access where you’re served breakfast, midday snacks, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, cocktails, non-alcoholic drinks and late night snacks - all complimentary. Winner!

Kitchen6, the French eatery La Farine, Rang Mahal by Atul Kochhar for Indian food lovers, Tong Thai serving up exquisite Thai cuisine, Positano for an Italian culinary fix and the Garden with South American delicacie as well as Izakaya Japaznese restaurant. There’s a number of great bars and lounges for a more casual atmosphere too. GIRL’S DAY OUT

PRIME DINING

The iconic hotel is well-known for its food and beverage offerings. During our stay we try out the sophisticated, award-winning restaurant Prime68. A chic, mood-lit steakhouse with a menu that every meat maven will fall in love with – and there’s lots of great choices for non meateaters too. Firstly, it’s located on the 68th floor so prepare for the most mesmerising panoramic views. Next, you won’t be overwhelmed by the menu as the staff are greatly knowledgeable on the different cuts of meat and what sides and sauces would go well together. Prime68’s premium suppliers have been carefully selected for their artisan produce, cultivated with passion and consideration for the environment, featuring the finest heritage breed beef from farms around the globe. We go for the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake, Organic Baby Beets and Artisan Feta Salad, and the Wagyu Meat Balls for starters. The latter blows our taste buds away – covered in lip-licking Parmesan cream, it’s a must. For mains, it had to be the 250g Jack’s Creek Wagyu Tenderloin - grain fed for a minimum of 120 days and highly coveted because it produces a higher fat content with better marbling. We also opt for the Josper Grilled Line Caught Filet of Sea Bass, whilst our sides consist of Mac and Cheese, Sweet Potato Fries and Grilled Asparagus (there’s no such thing as too many sides!). Let us take a moment to reminisce the steak, which is cooked on-point to our preference of medium. It’s tender and tasty, and we take our time devouring this bad boy – HIGHLY recommended. As far as steakhouse experiences go, Prime68 is a fine contender for a spot in our top three in the UAE! Aside from Prime68, the hotel also offers an expansive international restaurant called

If you’re staying at the hotel with a bestie, your mum, sister or any special lady who loves a bit of pampering followed by a delicious afternoon tea – this spa plus foodie deal is what you need to book during your stay. Choose a 30-minute treatment from the options – we went for the back, neck and shoulder massage – which is followed by a 15-minute foot massage. Arrive early at the peaceful Saray Spa and make use of the awesome facilities: sauna, steam room, ice fountain, Jacuzzi hot tub and relaxation area. What we loved about the spa is that everything from the dim-lit décor to the serene music and sensual scents make you forget that you’re in the heart of a bustling city – isn’t that what spa days are about – total escapism? This is followed by the most filling high tea at La Farine Café & Bakery, a gorgeous venue on the ground floor where you’ll be served unlimited hot beverages of your choice alongside a menu of delectable sandwiches and sweet delights – all prepared with the utmost creativity and flavours. Take your phone because this food journey is totally insta-worthy. Oh, and let’s not forget that when your tummies are full and you’re ready for a relaxing afternoon. Head to the breathtaking pool area where it’s sun loungers galore and a pool that we just LOVED dipping in and out of. It was hard to pack up and leave a place that very quickly felt like home and where we’d gotten used to seeing the same faces and exchanging greetings in the corridors. For the sheer amount of things to do and experience within its perfectly decorated walls and for the beyond amazing hospitality, JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai should be right at the TOP of your next staycation choices. You won’t regret it! ✤

Waterfront ARABIAN LUXURY

THE SHANGRI-LA HOTEL, QARYAT AL BERI, ABU DHABI IS THE EPITOME OF MAGICAL ESCAPES IN A MODERN GULF CITY; IT HAS THE ENCHANTING ARCHITECTURE, THE SOPHISTICATED DÉCOR AND THE PALATIAL SURROUNDINGS TO GIVE EVERY VISITOR A SLICE OF LUXURY LIVING. FACT VISITED THE 5-STAR HOTEL TO EXPERIENCE THE BEST IN MIDDLE EASTERN MEETS MALAYSIAN HOSPITALITY.

DELUXE LIVING They had us at ‘each of the 214 rooms feature a balcony or terrace with a breathtaking view of the canal’ – but then we walked into the Horizon Club Deluxe Room and were in awe of the elegant archways and Arabian architectural flair; from the sophisticated bathroom style to the comfortable bedroom, and the picturesque balcony. This room type is particularly great for a weekend break because it comes with homely features and added benefits. You get a personal concierge service, 24-hour butler service, and personalised in-room check-in and check-out. But, best of all, for us, was the complimentary afternoon tea and canapés in the Horizon Club Lounge – a welcomed respite to snack and chill out from sunbathing or a day out visiting the city’s many tourist hotspots! The furnishings are contemporary, the exclusive privileges abundant, and the staff incredibly helpful. If that wasn’t enough you have everything from a safe, a well-stocked mini bar, and even a stationery box (yes, there’s a stapler and sharpener too!). The beds are super comfy and the deep-sinking bath tub is the perfect way to relax after a long day. We’re not big on clichés but this room choice can only, rightly, be described as ‘a home away from home’. If you want to opt for something extra special, the hotel offers four different types of suites, each with plush living areas, grand bedrooms and a host of luxury amenities and extras. If that’s not enough, and if you’re wanting to stay with a group of friends or extended family, go for The Villas, which embody first-rate luxury with distinct privacy, The Villas by Shangri-La provide an exclusive sanctuary for the most discerning guests seeking unique exclusivity with loved ones. Named after a different region in Abu Dhabi, each of the six four-bedroom Villas is tastefully furnished with Asian, Arabic or contemporary décor and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, with highly-trained butlers providing discreet yet convenient service. fact magazine

53

SUNSEEKER’S PARADISE What’s more perfect than a sandy beach and lush greenery to escape the bustle of the city? If you’re staying at the Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri for the weekend, and getting your fix of vitamin D is top of the agenda, look no further than the sprawling private beach dotted with comfy sunbeds. There are also a number of pools to choose from, all surrounded by beautiful palm trees and perfectlytrimmed green grass; in simple terms, a completely serene setting where you can unwind with a glass of something cold! You can hop on the hotel’s traditional boats, abras, transporting you around the winding waterway to the adjoining souk (how cool is that?). If you’ve already spent the day sightseeing or shopping, take a front row seat to an exotic sunset with magnificent views of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque over the canal’s glittering waters – how’s that for a stunning end to the day?

RELAXATION REFINED On arrival at CHI, The Spa, you’re immediately overcome with a feeling of Zen; the neutral and deep-hued décor, low lighting, and aromatherapy smells give a calming illusion. On first impressions, you’ll see that Shangri-La has successfully managed to blend its signature Asian style with local Arabic influence and offer a Far East meets Middle East sanctuary. We experienced the glorious new Vegan Facial. Using only the cleanest products, this facial is like a breath of fresh air for your skin. Much like taking a wheatgrass shot in the morning – the Vegan Facial is great for stripping away dull, tired skin and bringing a natural glow to the surface – all with non-aggressive products. The knowledgeable therapist is attentive and informative throughout the treatment, we love that the facial incorporates a neck, shoulder and upper back massage too – so in between the different stages of the facial, you’ll get a chance to completely relax! This is just one of the great therapeutic treatments available. The spa menu is packed with authentic natural healing methods found in many Asian cultures. We’d highly recommended this facial for busy-bodies who aren’t up to scratch with taking care of their skin. It’s a gentle but effective treatment that left our skin soft, supple and renewed. Put down your phone, tablet and any other tech device; switch off and get your relaxation fix pronto – this is the PERFECT place for it. 54

FINE DINING PERFECTION As far as food goes, the Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri has so much to offer with variety and quality being the top priorities. Diners can indulge in a range of international cuisines; pamper your palate with authentic Chinese food at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Shang Palace, or awardwinning Vietnamese restaurant, Hoi An, whilst the all-day dining restaurant Sofra bld, and the elegant p&c by Sergi Arola with its traditional Spanish favourites, are also two great foodie spots. Enjoy pre- and post-dinner drinks at Al Hanah Bar or the informal Lobby Lounge, or relax by the pool deck with a fragrant shisha. For the ultimate in fine dining, we went to experience superb French cuisine at the glamorous restaurant, Bord Eau. You’ll enter a chic and elegant dining room, the kind that you’d expect to find in a grand manor house, decorated in opulent fabrics and furniture with large, comfortable chairs and warm mood-lighting to keep the ambience intimate and relaxed. Bord Eau also gets two other crucial things right: the food and the service. Sophisticated French cuisine is prepared by passionate chefs who use seasonal fresh produce and serve each dish with an artistic expression. We visited during the From Paris With Love night, which consists of a special three-course set menu with your choice of bubbly. There are rose petals on the table, a Paris-themed photo wall to have your picture taken, and even a caricature artist to hand you a memorabilia of the evening. Standout dishes included the super-fresh Grilled Tiger Prawns with avocado, cabbage salad and crushed hazelnut as well as the mouthwatering Slow-cooked veal cheek with onion jam, wild mushrooms and fresh herb pasta. Never have we tasted meat so tender and tasty – the food is definitely a talking point throughout the evening. This beautiful dining deal is ideal for a date night, anniversary, birthday dinner or couple’s treat. The Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi is exactly what you would want from a lavish and quality hotel that will impress on every level. ✤

the world amid modern surroundings, this restaurant has a bistro vibe with all the casual necessities of an inviting city venue. We’re immediately drawn to the open-kitchen style setting, which allows us to peek in at the chefs as they whip up their masterpieces. The restaurant hosts a number of culinary evening throughout the week – keeping things fresh for visitors. Try the Italian night or even the mouth-watering pizzas on any given day – guaranteed food goals. Aside from Afyä, which has a beautiful outdoor dining area that’s ideal for the winter months, there’s also the Lobby Lounge – an enclave that’s popular for business meets or social catch-ups, and the lovely Poolbar where sipping on a cool mocktail became one of our favourite things to do.

TRANQUILITY

With the 301 well-appointed rooms and suites, there’s plenty of space for work and play here. Room types include Superior, Deluxe and Premier, each utilising space for maximum comfort. There are also two suite categories, catering well for small families. Our room is elegantly appointed with tons of space; the bed is HUGE and makes for a beautifully serene night’s sleep. There’s ample storage for those travelling with lots of luggage and the room is big enough to do some quick cardio sprints! What we loved most is the practical and handy design – an LCD television, a DVD player and satellite/cable TV take prime position. There’s a nice sofa chair to lounge on and even a small dining table topped with fruit and sweet treats. The full-size executive writing desk means that work needn’t be a chore, but more a comfy task. There’s even stationery in the drawers and, best of all, a balcony with exceptional views of the beach, canal and in the distant – the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. You’ll get a full-size bath with a lovely walk-in shower and bathtub that’s excellent for a full stretch and soak after a long day in the heat. Deluxe toiletries will also surprise you as will the tea and coffee making facilities, the well-stocked mini-bar and the complimentary drinking water – something that many people take for granted in hotels – not us, we notice, we drink, and we are thankful for the generous supply here!

The premier Abu Dhabi Health Club at Traders Hotel houses a wellequipped gymnasium with changing rooms, an outdoor swimming pool and a private beach. It’s no surprise why people like to stay at Traders Hotel; the beach is golden perfection whilst the pool and gardens are designed to provide hours of relaxation and enjoyment for the entire family – young and grown. In fact, you’re better off heading straight to the beach after breakfast to avoid disappointment in getting the sun lounger of your choice. The hotel provides the ideal outlet for guests to work away their fatigue and rejuvenate their bodies. Those staying at the hotel can also take advantage of spa facilities at the luxurious CHI, The Spa, at Shangri-La next door. There is a dedicated play area for children with swings and other outdoor activities as well – so whilst mum and dad top up the tan, the little ones can have their own fun! There’s very little that we would fault about this hotel. If you’re bringing your own car be prepared to wait a while for valet as the hotel’s location means that it doesn’t have ample parking within the grounds and cars have to be parked outside and across the roads. So, if your car has been valeted, just add another 15 minutes onto your journey. At times, there can be some congestion at the entrance so we’d advise to walk towards the exit and hop in your car once you see the valet bringing it around! With that said, it was nowhere near enough of an inconvenience to put us off staying here again! ✤

aisoon Al Saleh’s talent was first noticed at a young age, when she was in kindergarten and her teacher mentioned to her parents that she was extremely talented, especially in comparison to her peers. This artistic license runs deep through her veins as her Aunt is indeed a fine artist, alongside her Father who is passionate about photography and her Mother who is into fashion designing. As a child, Maisoon was obsessed with her Ghostbusters colouring book and proudly carried it everywhere alongside her crayons. She continued to watch the TV series when she lived in the United States. We love her refreshingly honest answers – who doesn’t like Ghostbusters? Being an Interior Design graduate from Zayed University taught Maisoon the skill set to be able to use any material in constructing anything, from 3D printing using various machines, sculpture, installation, and interactive art which expanded her previous flair for painting,

mixed media, and digital art. “I became not limited working on 2D works, but the whole room turned into my canvas,” she explains. She’s a self-proclaimed surrealist artist who mixes reality with her imagination. Each of Maisoon’s artworks is based on a true story that has either happened to her directly, something that she has heard from a friend or indeed something that she has simply read in a newspaper. For example, in her second solo show, The Dara Chronicles, she produced a set of mixed media images that explore stories and documented accounts of the Dubai-based M.V. Dara, a passenger

liner that exploded in the Gulf on April 8th, 1961. “I grew up hearing stories from my grandfather about that night on the vessel where he was one of the survivors,” she recalls. Newspaper articles and other reports at the time only describe an explosion in the middle of the ship and suggest that the cause was likely sabotage. Beginning with an exploratory dive at the Dara gravesite itself, she exhaustively researched the event, seeking out experiences retold from different personal perspectives. The resulting art works were inspired by letters about the incident written by the shipping company and police investigators, news articles, and stories told by survivors or family members of those who perished in the shipwreck. She further juxtaposed different cultural viewpoints through the presence of three suitcases, symbolising the different nationalities on board—British, Indian and GCC passengers. Portraits of passengers, stories of the explosion and the events that followed illuminate personal narratives versus media accounts. Through these strategies, Maisoon brings viewers into a discussion about the importance of Emirati history and forces

us to challenge how we think about the UAE’s past, memory and its representation in mainstream media. When asked simply, “Why art?” her response is just as thought provoking as her artworks: “Art is part of me, it’s an addiction,” she says. “I can’t even allow one day to pass by without creating something. It gives me the freedom to express myself with no restrictions!” Maisoon’s mother often revels in seeing the mural paintings that her daughter has created. One such visual is the 4 level building located on the 2nd of December Street adjacent to the Etihad Museum in Dubai. Her mum links this back to a childhood memory where she bore witness to Maisoon scribbling merrily on their living room walls.

• ARTS INTERVIEW

Always one to step outside the realms of normality, Maisoon told us of how she started to experiment with the medium of underwater painting using the bathtub as her initial starting point. This evolved into her gaining a scuba diving license in 2010: “This is when I started to create some artworks underwater using waterproof, heatproof, and against UV light materials to create part of The Dara Chronicles.” We’re impressed! Even more so when she recalls the time that she was being trained to deal with sharks underwater whilst scuba diving, when a clown fish (y’know, Finding Nemo?) was, well… ‘clowning’ around and wouldn’t let go of her as she was painting underwater. An apprentice in the making! In her work, the focus is on telling true stories about what is happening in the UAE, for example in the series titled The Bright Side of the Bones you can see skeletal figures and different nationalities painted using acrylic on canvas. “Having those skeletal figure represents equality in the UAE as there’s no differentiation here in age, gender, and nationality, we are all equal,” she explains. Due to this method of documentation of the UAE history it’s easy to see why her artworks have been recognised on

an international level. They focus on shedding light on specific topics that haven’t really been discussed in depth or even at all. Maisoon’s perception of the current art scene, and whether or not she is faced with any challenges, is a positive one. “The scene has been growing rapidly in the Gulf and in particular in the UAE,” she says. “Dubai for example has been investing in the culture and arts by hosting exhibitions, therefore it’s attracting collectors to invest in art, either through auction houses or art fairs. Those activities resulted towards a rapid growth in the art market.” This is clearly a lady who knows her stuff and is evidently ‘switched on’ when further interrogated questioned about how she deals with said challenges. “Having such an active, supportive, and growing art scene hasn’t been challenging for me as an artist as you also have the government support in supporting local talents, not just for Emirati artists but also for various nationalities for example, Dubai Culture (Sikka Art Fair) , and Dubai Media Office (Dubai Canvas 3D Art Festival and Dubai Open Museum initiative).” Any encouraging last words, Maisoon? “Do what your passionate about the most, and success will follow you.” ✤

he Founding Fathers display begins with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi and Father of the Nation, and gives visitors a chance to view personal objects including his cane, prayer beads, sunglasses, wristwatch, and a pocket watch. The collection was curated with the help of the Zayed Museum management team as part of the Let’s Preserve Our Legacycampaign launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was born in 1918 in the city of Al Ain and passed away in 2004. He became the Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in 1966, succeeding his brother Sheikh Shakhbout, and was the first President of the United Arab Emirates – earning him the title of Father of the Nation. The personal belongings of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan are complemented by the

story of his family – one of the most important and influential of political leaderships in the history of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the UAE in general. Over the past three centuries, the Al Nahyan family has played a major role in political, economic, and social transformations that have taken place in the nation – most importantly the founding of the UAE. The Etihad Museum inspires visitors with the story of the most significant moment in the UAE’s timeline – the birth of the country at Union House – which would not have been possible without the dedication of the Founding Fathers. By introducing visitors to each of the rulers in a meaningful way, the museum ensures that their legacy is celebrated to enrich the UAE’s present and shape its bright future. ✤

ALT/INDIE-POP

DOUBLE DUTCHESS

By Fergie

After what feels like forever, the London Bridge hitmaker is ready to bless us with her muchawaited album. Double Dutchess, featuring Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj was released to an incredibly eager audience and we can’t say we’re disappointed. Incorporating a bit of pop, hip-hop, reggae, R&B and a whole lotta throwback, the album offers a lot of contrasts while also hinting at the singer’s personal life. Carrying a killer concept, M.I.L.F.$ is hands down the most polarising track on the album. In this age of generic, cookie-cutter pop, Fergie rapping about being a super-hot mom is downright revolutionary. While the track is definitely bold and ballsy, it definitely lacks the oomph of Glamorous or Pump It. If you’re a fan of the original Fergie flavour, You Already Know should be right up your alley. The song is a gentle reminder of Fergie’s legit pipes and features a nice infectious flow. While it isn’t fundamentally different to Fergie’s previous work, it definitely carries a fresh new vibe.

With a number of guest stars in tow, the Seattle MC’s first standalone album in twelve years sees a brand new approach to his music. Showcasing a different palette of sounds, textures and vibes, the singer has tried to infuse his own personal happiness into the music. As the singer unveiled the celebratory new song, Glorious, there was no doubt in our minds that the album is a true labour of love. With guest vocals from Skylar Grey and production from longtime collaborator Josh “Budo” Karp and Tyler Dopps, the song sees a rapid percussion and an energising piano loop. Complimented by Grey’s gospel-tinged hook, the song oozes endless positivity and motivation and is the only feel-good anthem you need this season!

A compact crossover set to redefine its segment with style, practicality and innovative technology for every metropolitan motorist. FACT takes the all-new Nissan Kicks out onto the UAE roads for a test drive and here’s the verdict…

W

hen you’re choosing a vehicle to drive in the UAE, what do you look for? Is it the exterior design? Or is it interior comfort? Maybe you like technological features, or are you all about easy driving? Whatever it is that you look for in a car, pay attention because Nissan Middle East wants to give you ALL of this and then some with the brand new crossover, the Nissan Kicks. Launched a few months ago into the Middle East market, Nissan has now ticked more boxes for drivers who want a crossover that combines innovation and class with style and performance. Let us tell you all about what makes this model so special… The Nissan Kicks is solely aimed at urban driving environments – think everywhere from leafy suburbs to compound communities, the laid back Abu Dhabi Corniche and even rush hour on Sheikh Zayed Road. It’s abundant features cater to the UAE driver’s every motoring need; on the few windy days we drove the car, its robust exterior was like a guard against the heavy breeze, whilst the car’s generous ground clearance (200mm) provides an elevated driving position and a high eye point for excellent all-round visibility something that you’ll appreciate at rush hour. 72

fact magazine

The Nissan Kicks also handles very well – its agile and smooth maneuverability makes the car a joy to drive (turning something that can be a stressful task in the UAE, into an enjoyable one). If you’re all about looks, you should know that this car is VERY visually appealing. The Kicks features established Nissan design signatures such as the V-motion grille which dominates the car’s front end. Also present are the boomerang head and taillights, and the “floating” coupé-style roof with a wrap-around visor look to the windscreen and side glass. To put it simply, for us, as young professionals working between Abu Dhabi and Dubai – this is definitely a car that is perfect for getting you to important meetings as well as being the designated ride for an evening out with friends. The body features an advanced aerodynamic design, which optimises fuel consumption (we were impressed that a full tank cost was no more than AED70 dirhams) and minimises noise. The spacious interior too, is instantly recognisable as a Nissan design thanks to the gliding wing shape stretching the width of the dashboard – not to mention, seats are super spacious and comfortable, especially ideal for those leisurely drives between the two emirates, or weekend road trips further afield. The Kicks is packed with features to help the driver in every way.

CITY RIDES •

THE NISSAN KICKS TARGETS YOUNG PEOPLE WHO

It’s the first model to utilise the concept of Nissan Intelligent Mobility which uses smart, relevant technology to make the driver’s life easier while also making advances towards Nissan’s long term goal of zero emission and zero fatality motoring. The Nissan Kicks targets young people who are early adopters of forward-thinking technology and those who appreciate and embrace the way it can both simplify urban driving and connect them more easily to what matters. In that regard, the Intelligent Mobility features within the Kicks aim to reduce stress for drivers through innovations such as the Around View Monitor (AVM) and the Moving Object Detection system (MOD). Parking is also a breeze; using four cameras, placed at the front and rear of the car and in both door mirrors, AVM creates a bird’s eye 360-degree view of the car which can be displayed on the central monitor and used as a parking aid. The cameras automatically get to work when you shift to R (reverse) mode, and in places like the UAE where street parking, general side stops and even tight spaces in the mall can be difficult to navigate, having the cameras is a HUGE help.

MOD is another great benefit of the Kicks: when the MOD system detects a moving object – a pedestrian, for example – a warning is sounded to alert the driver to the hazard and prevent a potential accident. This could help those drivers who may forget to check their blind spots when switching lanes or on those tricky corners with pedestrian crossings. Safety is the name of the game! The tech doesn’t stop there. Kicks owners will relish the convenience and simplicity of the suite of systems that are accessible via the centrally-mounted, 7-inch colour touchscreen. These functions include navigation, audio, and bluetooth phone connections. Complementing the touchscreen, and ideally located in front of the driver, a further screen in the main cluster of dials relays information from the on-board drive computer, audio system and navigation systems, as well as displaying warnings. Vehicle settings can be easily adjusted using the four-way selector on the steering wheel. We found that the UAE maps on the navigation system were not suited for manual input; there was limited recognition of streets, buildings and specific locations like hotel names. However, the way around this is to lock into the Sat Nav under “points of interest” – from big malls to apartment towers, your nearest petrol station and even street parking spots – the GPS system had a good amount of places to lead you to the right area. A great help for those who may not be so familiar with UAE roads, and for those times when you might run out of data on your phone! Among a host of comfort and safety technologies included in Kicks, its chassis control, supported by

advanced electronic systems known as Active Trace Control, Active Ride Control and Active Engine Brake, is a truly outstanding feature. Active Trace Control is an innovation that intervenes during driving through corners to ensure the intended trajectory is maintained by discreetly applying brakes to wheels individually. This has the effect of preventing a sudden loss of grip or stability. Similarly, Active Ride Control, applies the brakes for a split-second after the car has encountered large undulations in the road, to reduce the “bounce” effect on the suspension. This simple, effective solution is lighter and less complex than expensive and heavy adaptive damping systems. To counter the “coasting” effect often associated with automatic and CVT gearboxes, Kicks is equipped with Active Engine Brake. When the accelerator is released, typically approaching a corner, engine braking is applied to stabilise the speed. This range of tech will help on main roads to give you a smoother drive as well as tight corners in underground parking, for example, and every on-road situation that may require the your car to come to your rescue. Nissan Kicks has class-leading fuel efficiency thanks to its advanced 1.6-litre engine and lightweight platform. Power is rated at 88kW (118HP) and torque of 149Nm, so you’ll get the added benefit of superb performance too. Word of warning: there were some days when the automatic unlocking of the car took a while. Whether it was the key or another element, it took us around 10 minutes of circling the car and pressing the key for the it to respond. A malfunction that isn’t ideal, but nowhere near a good enough reason to put us off! This Kicks keeps things compact with the most tasteful design and technologically driven features. This is NOT a mum and dad car. It’s for the young professional who wants to be at the top of their game in both business and pleasure – a refined vehicle to safely and stylishly cruise the UAE roads. ✤ fact magazine

MOLTON BROWN COASTAL CYPRESS & SEA FENNEL

E

mbodying boundless exploration into the uncharted, the fragrance captures a salt-sprayed collision of the ocean swell against rugged outcrops. As a marine scent crafted with the most unusual notes, this venturesome collection echoes Molton Brown’s own pioneering spirit. The lead ingredient has been sourced from Cape York, Australia – a remote, largely unexplored and unspoilt peninsula. The indigenous cypress oil known as ‘blue gold’ is the world’s only naturally blue essential oil distilled from a tree, which has then been unconventionally mingled with the salty breeze aromas of sea fennel, grown wild on the shoreline. This dynamic coastal fragrance makes the perfect gift for the adventurous spirit.

CHEF’S TABLE •

Unrivalled Dining It’s become one of the most talked-about venues in town, with gastronomes craving for reservations. FACT sent Out & About UAE’s David Tapley to The Experience by Reif Othman, one of Dubai’s most discerning dining spots and it was nothing short of amazing.

W

hen it comes to unique dining experiences, Dubai has its fair share of options. Dining in an aquarium, in the dark or on a traditional wooden abra are just some of the choices readily available in this desert metropolis. For those in search of something a little more refined, acclaimed Chef Reif Othman has developed a one-of-a-kind dining concept on the 37th floor of the H Hotel. Known simply as The Experience by Reif Othman this intimate dining room has become one of the most in-demand reservations in the city. Following on from his success as regional Executive Chef at Zuma, Chef Reif opened award-winning Mediterranean venture Play (also at the H), before retreating upstairs to run this experimental chef’s table cum supper club. A meal at The Experience begins with a simple telephone call to discern each diner’s food preferences, dietary requirements and allergies. For this is not just any restaurant, with each sitting limited to just 12 lucky diners for whom Chef Reif will improvise a menu, based on the availability of fresh ingredients and whatever creative tangent he is currently pursuing. Guests enter The Experience via a private elevator from the hotel lobby, opening out into a small lounge area. Greeted with a glass of bubbly and the most professional staff, you’re invited to relax on the lowslung sofas and once everyone is assembled, it’s time to slip behind the panelled doors and enter into Chef Reif’s world. The private dining room isn’t what you may necessarily expect. A wooden table forms a u-shape in front of a preparation counter and open show-kitchen. The feeling less fine dining and more Manhattan loft-style apartment, and this is the chef’s intention. Inspired by his time in New York as part of the Zuma opening there, the restaurant space feels more like stepping into someone’s house. Promoting a sense of community that encourages you to relax and engage with the other guests, as if dining at the dinner party of a close friend. The Experience is a restaurant of simple and appealing decor and one that the chef designed himself, many of the furnishings and light fittings were purchased right here in Dubai from stores 92

CHEF’S TABLE •

such as Marina Home and The One, adding a feeling of familiarity. As we gather at the table, Chef Reif appears, emitting a vivacious enthusiasm for his craft. Whenever you meet a chef, you’re never quite sure what to expect, but Chef Reif makes his guests feel immediately comfortable via a mixture of effortless charm, infectious charisma and outright passion for this project. He introduces himself not as a chef, but as a cook, and explains that his drive comes from cooking for people who appreciate food. With the evening’s dishes scrawled simply on a handwritten menu, Chef Reif’s avant-garde cuisine allows him complete creative freedom over his food and marks a refreshing change from the norm. When not engaging his guests in witty banter, he works with tireless precision. An artist perfecting his craft in the assemblage of selected ingredients into immaculate plates of sheer beauty. Call it experimental, but the dishes have a certain refinement to them, mixing bold flavours that you may not always expect. Take for example, the slow-cooked Japanese rib-eye we were served, topped with a sauce made of tuna and anchovies. The meat is slow-cooked at 65 degrees and resembles a sashimi more than the expected steak. Competing textures frequently come into play and another beef dish, the confit Wagyu, is plated with a squid ink meringue that can only be described as a textural marvel. Yet with the menu changing each day, Chef Reif has the ability to conjure up anything and showcase some lesser-known ingredients in the process, meaning we try a quail ravioli and abalone (marine sea snails) for the first time, lightly seared and served with a Japanese quinoa. While The Experience is certainly representative of fine dining, there are none of the conventional trappings. Boasting service that’s both proficient and amiable, there’s plenty of interaction and a fluidity to dining with Chef Reif, meaning you can take a break from the food at any time, and don’t have to keep pace with your fellow diners. Going against the grain, there’s no pretense, and despite the popularity of the restaurant, no dress code is imposed and children are welcome to dine as well. The Experience by Reif Othman is neither a chef’s table nor supper club. He has taken the idea one step further and turned the concept into a fully-functioning restaurant, inviting diners into his world. Offering a distinct homeliness, and unique culinary concept, there’s nothing else like this in the Emirates and no two meals will ever be the same. Entering as a guest, you leave feeling like one of Chef Reif’s friends. Perfect for a birthday celebration or just to experience (see what we did there) food that is both innovative and exemplary, our suggestion is to get your bookings in fast. Definitely one for the TRUE foodies! ✤
