“
Endless effort, endless humility, endless modesty.” - Rain

his issue has been a long time coming. The conversation surrounding the rise of modest living has been at the forefront of society, in the Gulf and beyond, for the past few years. Modesty comes in many different forms and it’s certainly having its moment. From frugalfolk tribes living the #nospend life to fashion houses hiring uberhaute models, who happen be wearing a hijab, more than ever, there’s a basic desire to be modest in the way e live, shop and dress. Now, in 2018, we can firmly say that aspects like modest fashion and modern representations of Muslim women in the mainstream media are slowly starting to change for the better – and proving to be more than just a “trend” thanks to social media and other content-sharing tools. In a September special, we take a look at the rise of the modest lifestyle and how everything from the birth of bloggers and influencers to the images of hijab-wearing cover girls has contributed to the growth of all things modest. Turn to p27 and let our thought-provoking feature take you on the journey of modest to mainstream. When you’ve finished reading about how modest living has taken over the world, turn over and check out some of the most incredible women who have helped to propel it forward in our 16 Style Setters to follow on the gram (p35). Right here in the UAE, we met up with two Emirati sisters who are championing the modest fashion movement. Meet the ladies behind The Orphic for an insight into their newest collection and stunning embrace of faith and style (p40). Of course, a special issue deserves a beautiful cover – and we found just the right lady to give us one. Bahraini Digital Artist Hala AlAbbasi talks to us on p47 and shares her work, creative skills and modest lifestyle choices. In other exciting news, we reveal the final shortlist of nominees for the 2nd annual FACT Dining Awards Dubai. Hundreds of fantastic venues across the city are recognised for their great efforts on the local dining scene. Did your favourites make it? Find out and get voting on www.fact-magazine.com. It’s all about quality in our dining pages this month as we visit Bleu Blanc by David Myers at the Renaissance Downtown Hotel, Dubai, in our Culinary Spotlight (p87); Babel at La Mer Dubai takes our New in Town pick (p91); and the Foodie Corner makes a pit-stop for Saturday Brunch at Graze, La Ville Hotel & Suites, City Walk (p95) – all of this and plenty more news on restaurant openings and September food deals will keep your bellies full throughout the month! Welcome back to the sandpit – and the humidity – for those of you who have had a lovely summer away! Whatever you say, there’s no place like the Gulf – and we’re going to spend September enjoying (trying to, at least) all that Dubai life has to offer. ☺

SOUND OF THE UNDERGROUND There’s a new club in town that’s set to shake up the Dubai scene. Industrial Avenue, housed at the Westin Mina Seyahi Beach Resort and Marina has had a complete makeunder with a new stripped-back, warehouse feel synonymous with the underground clubs of London. THE TEAM BEHIND THE NEW venue are promising to disrupt the current fabric of the Dubai night life scene with a brand-new option that gives club-goers a more laid-back alternative to the glitz and glamour that the city is famous for. No sparklers, no rope, no over the top extravagance! The club’s ‘for-the-people’ ethos is a welcome change with a back-to-basics approach that’s all about the people, the music and the dance floor. The experience and its casual dress-code means you’re more likely to see guests ditching the killer heels, in favour of their favourite kicks! The club will open up the underground scene to a market lacking in options outside of the more VIP driven venues. Whilst there will be tables available at Industrial Avenue, a large dancefloor will take centre-stage. Open Wednesday to Friday, the new line-up offers three nights of unrivalled music selections, from Wednesday night’s flagship underground house and techno event, ‘KOVERT’ to old school Hip-Hop, R&B and Grime offering ‘STEEZY’ (Style - Easy) taking place every Thursday. Fridays will be home to ‘CASA LOCA’, Industrial Avenue’s immersive and story driven experience with a cross genre house soundtrack. KOVERT at Industrial Avenue kicks off from 11pm on Wednesdays with some of the world’s house and techno maestros. Thursday night sees Hip-Hop done the right way at Industrial Avenue, with STEEZY. Expect the big names like Dj Colione, 1takennandos and DJ Crown Prince to be spinning old school Hip-Hop, R&B and Grime. Casa Loca, the party that makes a noise wherever it goes will be taking up 10

GET YOUR GROCERIES! Following the success of the grocery app, Wadi, within the KSA region, Wadi.com plans to expand into the UAE by 2019. WADI GROCERY, THE GROCERY APP of e-commerce major Wadi.com has emerged as a strong player within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. With a promise of 2-hour delivery from order to your doorstep, the app quickly became a consumer favourite in the region. With a customer base of 15 million+ of Wadi.com, the grocery app was launched earlier this year in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. The app today boasts more than 2000+ daily orders from more than 20,000+ products catalogue that includes fresh produce, dairy products, personal care brands, household supplies, kitchen essentials and more. This immense popularity is a result of Wadi Grocery App’s user-friendly interface and innovative attributes which includes the assisted order placement where the application suggests alternate purchase options to the buyers and inbuilt predicted cart feature, making the experience unique and hassle free. Speaking on the recent success, Pratik Gupta, Co-founder & MD, said: “By virtue of working in KSA for the past three years, we realised that the retail climate poses some unique challenges for the end consumer. From limited stocks, traffic jams, parking issues, the hot weather, consumers face a host of issues when they step out for their daily or weekly groceries. “We recognised the need gap in the market and decided 20

to introduce the Wadi Grocery App to ensure that our customers get everything delivered at their doorstep within two hours,” he added. As the competition in the online grocery space increases, Wadi Grocery App has significantly invested into building capabilities in the domains of product quality control, data sciences, inventory forecasting, consumer behaviour, manpower training and building supply-chain efficiencies apart from building infrastructure to provide necessary support for inventory stock. Pratik continued: “We received an overwhelming response from our existing fifteen million plus Wadi customers which enabled us to swiftly expand to the top three cities of the Kingdom. Our excellent logistics network across fifty plus cities and world-class technology helped us scale quickly and deliver on our promise of two-hour delivery along with the widest range of assortment for the region. “As a result, fifty per cent of the orders being generated on the app are solely via organic word of mouth. This kind of tremendous growth makes us confident about our future plans,” he said. ✤

M IS FOR MODESTY Like any other device, modesty has become a tool for many women all over the world. It shows character and confidence where the heart and mind rule the body. In a time where traditional and modern meet in the middle, more and more women are accomplishing extraordinary things without compromising their style or their faith. FACT’s Shabana Adam explores the rise of the modest lifestyle in the Gulf and beyond, and why it has taken so long for a generations-aged concept to finally break into the mainstream‌

hat do Nura Afia, Amena Khan, and Ibtihaj Muhammad have in common? Clue: it’s not just their very evident Muslim names. These three women did what some would have believed unimaginable even a decade ago. They broke into the mainstream to become the first hijab-wearing representatives in industries that are traditionally targeted towards western aesthetics and features. Nura wowed makeup experts and became an official ambassador for CoverGirl in 2017, while Amena was cast in a major haircare campaign for L’Oréal Paris Elvive – though short-lived – earlier this year, and Ibtihaj is not only a bad-ass sabre fencer, she’s the first Muslim American woman to wear a hijab while competing for the United States in the 2016 Olympics. All women, all Muslim, all wearing the hijab. And all of these achievements were made just over the past couple of years. My question is, what took so long for the world to stand up and notice these strong, capable, beautiful women and the thousands more who embrace their passions and talents without compromising their creative wardrobes and their faith? The answer could very well lie in the rapid rise of the modest lifestyle. In order to appreciate the impact and growth of modesty into the mainstream, we need to understand who it effects, benefits, and whether we’re witnessing an evolution or a revolution. So, what is modest fashion? Interpretations can differ depending on who you ask, but a widely accepted definition would be: a sense of personal style while remaining relatively covered. That means, high collars, long sleeves and hemlines, or looser clothing, for example – formerly “uncool” wardrobe attire that has gone from drab to fab. Generally speaking, modest fashion is a personal choice which simply means wearing more conventional clothing inspired by everything from your cultural norms to the latest runway collections. “When I hear the words modest fashion, I think of my hijab and to me it means dressing while adhering to my faith,” says Yasmine, a British-Lebanese modest lifestyle blogger who goes by the instagram name @undercoverstyling. “I think it has taken time for modest fashion to break into the mainstream because there are examples that are set from fashion hubs like New York, Paris and London where modesty was not considered when designing,” Yasmine explains. “Now with the rise of social media as well as the rise of modest bloggers and celebrities, modest fashion is making headlines.” She’s right. MODEST CULTURE • fashion houses such as Dolce & Gabbana, DKNY and Oscar de la Renta, have caught on to the booming market with exclusive collections, shining a spotlight on modest-wear. In fact, it is estimated that the international Muslim clothing market is forecast to be worth $373 billion by 2022, according to the latest Global Islamic Economy report, produced by Reuters. We’re also seeing the likes of London and Dubai; two of the most stylish cities in the world, now host an annual Modest Fashion Week. Nike has launched the Pro Hijab for modest sportswear, whilst Japanese fashion chain Uniqlo introduced its Uniqlo x Hana Tajima Collection with a line of hijabs, and H&M has featured a Muslim model, Mariah Idrissi, wearing a headdress in one of their major campaigns. Plus, we all remember the time a 15-year-old Saudi teenager demanded a hijab-clad emoji – of course, WhatsApp made it happen. It is rare for a multi-billion dollar industry to fly under the radar for so long, as the modest fashion sector has. But, it sleeps no more.

hanks to Muslim millennials, specifically women, this once unnoticed market is being driven forward by consumers, designers and trendsetters. For Yasmine, who loves combining fabrics, colours, prints and textures to make a bold statement, sharing the beauty of dressing modestly was one of the many reasons she decided to start @undercoverstyling on the gram. “I wanted to encourage other young women who don’t feel represented and they can be inspired by the colours, designs, and fabrics,” she says. “The use of social media has given Muslim women a voice and exposure that they never had before. We are able to communicate around the world and show people what the life of a modern, Muslim woman is really like,” Yasmine tells us. “It is the same for many communities around the world but especially for Muslim women because of the stereotypes that have been so prevalent previously. It means we can take back some control and show people a glimpse into our world.” As the western hemisphere takes note of how modest choices are, simply, a normal part of life for millions of Muslim women, it still remains a misconception in many parts of the world, that women who wear the hijab or more traditional clothing, are oppressed. “Many people in the west still lack knowledge and understanding of the history and the privilege of wearing a hijab,” says UAE-based British-Pakistani teacher Suneela Aslam. “Despite immigrants being an integral part of western life, some communities in places like America or the UK simply don’t invest enough time in learning about our differences.” Leading us to question whether the modest lifestyle is just another passing trend – one that blings cha-ching for profitmaking more so than a movement to break cultural boundaries. “I am all about breaking the stereotypes,” Yasmine says. “I wanted to create a platform that was positive and encouraging for modest women. The hijab for me is an honor and I wanted to show Muslim women that it is not limiting,” she continues. “I have travelled the world and my hijab has been a way for me to speak and deal with people and to tear down any misconceptions.”

who can highlight and express whatever message they have to offer with the support of various western companies. They are the reflection of modern-day society – one that is made up of a multitude of races and ethnicities, where certain folk adopt a survival strategy of embracing their duality to flow in between two cultures. Halima, for example, is Somali and American, a Muslim in a principally Christian country who inspires modesty whilst successfully walking the world’s biggest fashion weeks. “Hijabi models have an opportunity right now to change the conversation and show people how to embrace two worlds,” Suneela says. “Similarly, the fashion industry must help to educate the masses by normalising diversity instead of segregating it as a novelty or a trend.” It is important to note that whilst acceptance of modest icons has helped to
Let’s take a look at how western institutions have picked certain personalities to advocate for modesty. Take Halima Aden, the SomaliAmerican Miss Minnesota USA contestant, who competed wearing a hijab and a “burkini” – another first in the states. She was quickly signed to IMG Models, the agency that represents the Hadid sisters and went on to walk on the runway – wearing a hijab – for Yeezy, Max Mara and Alberta Ferretti. Is her success a fairy tale waiting to fade out or is her mainstream modest lifestyle an agent for change? It’s no secret that models like Halima Aden, Mariah Idrissi and supermodel Zara Mohamed Abdulmajid, widelyknown as Iman, were chosen for their gifted genes, but also as individuals 32

dispel some negative attitudes towards Muslim women, or any woman, who chooses to dress traditionally, there are still some damaging perspectives towards religion in some countries that have also deterred the growth of the modest lifestyle in selected markets. Restrictions like the burka ban in some parts of Europe or banned veils in some Chinese provinces means that even the most successful and far-reaching modest influencers, struggle to connect and relay their positive vibes and messages. Hold on, shouldn’t we leave it up to women to decide for themselves what they want to wear and how that crisp white Zara shirt or the patterned abaya and matching head scarf makes them feel? Tülin Meric, a Bahrain-based BritishTurkish modest fashion blogger running the platform @trestouline, says: “I would say that I’m freer than most women. Wearing modest clothing allows me to choose what I display or don’t display of my body. It allows me to express myself
through colour and design. “Dressing modestly also naturally gives off an indication on my religious stance,” Tülin explans. “I have a sense of liberation because there is an invisible barrier set between you and others – men – and that makes me feel safe and in control. I would say this is the ultimate freedom for any woman.” Choosing to live modestly in all or certain aspects of life is not a new concept. Generations of women, of many different faiths, have been covered whilst accomplishing great things and breaking that glass ceiling. Here’s hoping that this contemporary uprising and progression will not burn out anytime soon. For the moment, let us celebrate the Nura’s and Ibtihaj’s of the world, as they continue to remind people everywhere that you don’t need permission to be who you are and to go after what you want. ✤

ADVERTORIAL •
Hi ladies, what does the term “Modest Fashion” mean to you? Mariam: Modern comfortable wear for modern women; that is simpler in details and has less exposure of body parts. Amna: Definitely fashionable. Trendy pieces that are suitable for everyone with less exposure. The Orphic’s new Pre-Fall 2018 collection “has been designed with the modern Arab woman in mind” – describe her to us, who is the woman that buys your clothing? Mariam: Of course, the modern Arab woman is our main audience, but our collections are aimed at all women who choose to make a statement whether it be bold, smart or unique. Amna: Our customers are those women who are looking to stand out in a crowd, be unique and chic. Those women who are on the hunt for fashion at its highest quality. Tell us about your background and when you first decided that you wanted to become a source of support and celebration for women who choose to dress modestly… Mariam: I am a computer engineer with a master’s degree in engineering management. Amna and I decided to start this journey while we were in college. The idea and prospect of starting a fashion label popped up many times over the course of the last few years but it is only this year that we decided to take a leap of faith and move forward. Amna: I have a Bachelors in MIS. However, fashion has always been close to both our hearts, as we were on the constant lookout for modest wear that was stylish, classy, different and sometimes bold. Our search for this style led us to create The Orphic and helped us cater to a gap we have seen in the market as customers ourselves. fact magazine

in a pair of our trousers or buttons on high-waisted pants. We blend style and modesty together through choosing the right kind of quality fabric, rich in colour and texture, heavy with signature patterns presented in a traditional style but, keeping it modern. Providing mix-and-match pieces also helps us reach out to the right clientele as it offers options for a variety of people’s personal taste and style. How would you describe the connection between fashion, modesty, religion and art? Is there room for them all to exist side by side? Mariam: I believe there is definitely a relation between these four significant aspects of life and whether there is room for them to exist together depends solely on the individual, their beliefs and way of living. Amna: There is definitely a connection between all of them, but as Mariam said, it does depend on how a person decides to use these factors together and apply them into their lifestyle. Talk to us about the name of the brand – “The Orphic” – it’s original and memorable. Is there a story behind it? Mariam: Actually, that’s exactly why we choose it - we wanted a name that was original, memorable and reflects the way we would like our clients to feel when wearing our pieces. We kept searching for synonyms to the adjectives we aimed to find in our clientele. Amna: The Orphic is a name that could be used as an adjective and a noun. We wanted our brand name to be unique and catchy, and at the same time, reflecting our sense of style and unique pieces for every ‘orphic’ woman. The pieces by The Orphic are for “modest to vivacious dressers” – how do you blend style and modesty to reach the right clientele? Mariam and Amna: The key is to listen and survey what our potential clientele want and give them exactly that. We create cuts and styles that are internationally popular but have a touch of us, and our creative vision in them which could be as simple as lines 42

What do you think about the current state of modest fashion in relation to traditionally edgy or urban brands? Some big brands have had modest fashion specific campaigns and collections – is this a positive sign or just another drive for profit? Mariam and Amna: Definitely a mix of both. It’s a tactic a lot of brands are using to infiltrate undiscovered target markets and create conversation about collaborative styles. In the end, it works in the favour of building profit and makes for a bountiful push in changing the current fashion narrative too. Your designs are handmade locally within the UAE,
Q&A •
why was it important to keep the production side of The Orphic close to home? Mariam: To ensure the quality of work and production, it was very important that we had easy access to the groundwork of our designs going from paper to cloth. Amna: We are looking to provide people with the best quality of work and keeping the production local allows us to do that. There’s been a clear rise in modest fashion content in every aspect of life. Fashion, travel, and women’s empowerment - are Muslim women finally finding platforms for expression or is it more a response to what’s happening in the world right now? Mariam: Probably a bit of both but I believe mostly because Muslim women are finding their ground. There has been an increase in ad campaigns internationally where they have included Muslim women wearing the hijab, whether it’s fashion clothes or makeup campaigns. Not only ads but also in American TV shows, there is a noticeable rise in hijabi/Muslim women. Amna: I think Muslim women found their platform for expressing themselves through social media too. Given how big a platform Instagram can be, it has sparked a revolution of acceptance through the Muslim influencers and their take on society, life, beauty, basically everything that gets people to notice. Look at the Middle East itself; Muslim women are running successful campaigns, businesses and agendas. There is no limitation to how far we will go as a community. Share with us some quick style advice for girls who are keeping modest but want to show some flair? Mariam: Always look for something that will make you stand out. For me, I choose pieces with unique fabrics or unusual cuts. Maybe a unique pattern distributed in a modern or unusual way. Amna: Look for something that suits your sense of style and your body type. Not all body types are the same and not all cuts suit everyone. Finding the right fit and cut is imperative for all women who are looking to step their style game up. fact magazine

DARING, DREAMY AND DEFIANTLY DIGITAL Another strong young lady in all her vibrancy and talent – there;s a good reason why Hala AlAbbasi is our arts spotlight this month. FACT’s Shabana Adam talks to Bahraini Digital Artist and Calligraphist about creative spark, representations of modest life and the connection between fashion, religion and art… fact magazine

H
ala AlAbbasi’s instagram profile is a gallery of bold colours and strong images; portraits of women, depictions of summer in the Gulf, and plenty of iconic imagery that exudes an overwhelming sense of fun and positivity. “Beauty and nature inspires me,” she says. “When I start to draw, I allow myself to be guided by the work which is in the process of being born. I have confidence in it. I do not think about it. The hours on each artwork differs and depends on the style of the design, and the details which I dig into to create the final result. It took me years to get to where I am now by practicing art everyday,” Hala explains. It’s important to highlight that Hala’s creative side is a result of a type of art that has been around since the 1970s, and various names have been used to describe it. For the sake of modern day, we’ll go with Digital Art. This is where an image is predominantly computer generated, scanned or drawn using a tablet. Hala mostly uses her iPad Pro and Apple pencil as well as the Procreate App to produce her illustrations and portraits. She also utilises vector-drawing software with Adobe Illustrator by using the pin tool and shapes, which are outlined and can be filled with various colours and patterns. This tends to produce a harder edge or graphic look for her professional work. The process might be a cool and contemporary one, but the philosophy is still one of a traditional artist. “When it comes to the tools and techniques, I would say that art is not about the tools used to create it, but the vision, message, or emotion of the artist who can express their idea through lines, form, colour, pigmentation, composition and rhythm,” Hala says. “The artist can combine different features, effects, techniques and media to create their own unique vision.” If you’re new to the world of Digital Art, don’t let it intimidate you. The images are just as beautiful and daring, in some cases even more so, than a traditional pencil drawing or painting. Colour is more vivid, expression is deeper and there’s a whole new dimension added to something as simple as a portrait. “Digital art is like any other art,” Hala tells us. “It’s just created by using different tools than the more traditional arts. It took me years to draw everyday and experiment with different styles until I found what I love the most. “So I decided to focus on the digital side of my artworks, because that is what reflects me the most, and I also enjoy it so much,” she continues. “When it comes to the digital world, I feel like it is much less restricted than conventional mediums for artistic integration and manipulation. “Moreover, moving in between reality and the digital world gives me a push to do more and be more, it gives me hope and joy and all I want is to reflect this to others. It’s my gateway, and it’s my freedom,” she adds. Hala is not only challenging critics in the industry who believe that digital work has a lack of connection to an audience, she is also championing a form of art that is often overlooked by putting her own stamp on it, whilst living a free lifestyle driven by choice. She often draws portraits of women, random faces, (she even produced our incredible cover) as symbols of beauty 48

and strength. “Women in general, they inspire me the most,” Hala shares. “They reflect the real beauty and real power and strength in this world. I look for the depth in each woman, which can be found in all of us. Thriving women give meaning to life, and add hope to this world which reflects my purpose of creating artworks centered around them.” A refreshing perspective and one of the reasons why we chose Hala as our arts spotlight this month is, of course, to learn more about her opinions and experience of modest living as a young, Arab artist. It’s interesting to find that Hala, like hundreds of thousands of Muslim women everywhere, views modest fashion as a form of expression that boosts confidence. “Modest fashion gives me more options of clothing and to be creative in how I put together my outfits,” she says. “I now think outside the box and have developed an individual sense of style. It gives me the ability to dress in what I love but to add my own artistic twist to keep my outift elegant and simple, which in turn allows me freedom to express myself publicly.” When asked: how would you describe the connection between fashion, modesty, religion and art? Is there room for them all to exist side by side? Hala says: “If there is one thing that connects all four, in my opinion, it would be freedom. The freedom of choosing and matching colours, patterns, materials and styles and to be who you are as a woman. “Fashion and modesty reflect the world around it, and it could be for anyone which can be perceived and interpreted in a myriad of ways. Although, Muslim women who dress modestly are highly visible both on the streets of modern cities and in the media,” she adds. “When it comes to all four, it is important to reflect the beauty of modesty by being inspired by art, religion, and fashion.”

Back to Hala’s creative flair, her love of digital art began at an early stage in life, and even back then, it was something about the vivacity of the images that stirred her. “I remember as a kid, I would always pay attention to graphics,” Hala recalls. “They were a reflection of what I loved and my thoughts. The look, materials, quality, colours and feel were so desirable to me. I would observe and study the colours, patterns, design and illustrations and soon enough I wanted to discover the digital world to create what I love the most,” she says. Hala’s energy is becoming of her work. She is unapologetically a digital artist, a thinker, a celebrator of life and a staunch supporter of women in all their forms – fierce, vulnerable, outspoken or shy – and you get to see this through her dreamy and sometimes mysterious images. Alongside the modest lifestyle movement there’s a growing artistic revolution taking place – one that is challenging conventional art forms and garnering the attention of people in the Gulf and beyond. Hala is a part of this cool, unbound, selfdetermined 21st century crusade, and it’s time for the critics to sit up and take note! ✤

Q: Do you remember the very first piece of art or illustration that you created – what was it and how did it make you feel? A: During my childhood years at school, I remember when I first started to use the mouse on the computer to draw with Paint. I drew three girls and I loved how it made me feel, as it was a real hard challenge to put all of my focus and control on it. When I did the first one, I wanted to do more. Deep down I believed in my skills and abilities. I was always interested and I explored with different drawing applications and used adobe photoshop for the first time back then. I was obsessed to learn more and grow. I simply enjoyed every little process with every little detail I made. I knew then that I never wanted to stop. I wanted to embrace myself and let my passion and love for digital art drive me wherever it was going to take me. Q: What would you say to people who think that women who choose to dress modestly are not “free”? A: Modest fashion isn’t limited to Muslim women; it’s also popular internationally. Modest fashion shows love to women and speaks awareness and wisdom to others when it comes to covering up to feel comfortable and accepted within most communities. It feels great to be able to dress in a modern yet stylish and beautiful way that brings confidence to be more fashion-forward. The biggest brands and fashion companies
have started to launch hijab and abaya collections within their clothing lines in the last two years. Muslim women can now express themselves freely. Dressing modest for women shows self-respect and love of each one to others, and lets them get creative freely without being judged by others. Q: What advice would you give to up-and-coming, young, budding illustrators or Digital Artists? A: I believe that every artist has their own creative ‘truth’ which I think matters the most. It’s about taking many tiny baby steps to achieve and maintain quality and continuity. It’s about commitment and dedication. It has to do with inhaling and exhaling. Getting in depth, letting it be with no expectations. What I love about art as a form is that it has no limitations or restrictions; art is a total freedom. Any beginner illustrator or digital artist has to start from somewhere, experiment with drawing apps, electronic brushes and tools that help you to translate hand motions, cutting and pasting to create a new look and pose real challenge to those who explore these new digital avenues until they grow internally to be extraordinary.

When war-hardened crusader, Robin of Loxley and his Moorish commander embark on a bold mission against the corrupt English crown, things take an unexpected turn. Their audacious revolt leads to gritty battlefield exploits, mind-blowing fights, a timeless romance and lots of thrilling action-packed adventure.
DIRECTOR: Otto Bathurst CAST: Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx, Ben Mendelsohn
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?
A brand-new take on an age-old tale, Otto Bathurst’s modernised version of Robin Hood has us on the edge of our seats! Offering a dark, modern and intense version of the classic hero, the film aims to stand out from its previous interpretations by significantly stepping away from tradition. Bereft of any of the conventional merriment, fancy costumes or jovial witticism, Robin Hood claims to tell a story that the viewers are unfamiliar with. Featuring the perpetually told story of the English archer who robbed from the rich to give to the poor, the film gets more intense and realistic like never before. Revolving around Robin Hood and his commander’s attempt to take down the corrupt English crown, the plot entails exciting action, amazing fight sequences as well as a breathtaking tale of romance. The everlasting war against the rich and powerful, a super good looking cast and revamped plotline definitely make this adaptation a winner in our eyes.

ROCK
Raise Vibration
By Lenny Kravitz
Combining good old-fashioned rock with glam and soul has always been Lenny Kravitz’s magic formula. After ushering in the gritty rock music era of the 1980’s, the American singer-songwriter is back with another hit record. Promising to be one of Kravitz’s most eclectic; Raise Vibration features the singer playing most of the instruments himself with longtime guitarist Craig Ross as the only collaborator. A ruminative commentary on the current global state of affairs, Kravitz’s eleventh studio album is all about moving forward through higher understanding. Displaying his discontent with the sociopolitical climate, It’s Enough is a lengthy single featuring a distinct soulful groove. A socially-conscious gem, the track sums up the sentiment of the times while delivering an absolute banger. Known for always sticking to his own beat, Kravitz holds nothing back on his latest release. An atmospheric funk single, Low deals with the issue of preconceptions in the beginning of a relationship. Its multilayered vocals and guest appearance by Michael Jackson give it a musical edge. Staying true to his unique brand of rock, Kravitz transcends all musical boundaries while giving the world a lot to think about.

FEEL THE MAGIC: MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS COUNTRYMAN
fact magazine
63
• CITY RIDES
Described as “extremely athletic, extremely versatile” – the new John Cooper Works Countryman is definitely new territory for MINI. FACT tests the vehicle to see if it’s just another car that’s potent but pricey or if it’s really a game-changer for MINI, being the heaviest, roomiest and best-equipped car that the manufacturer has created to date.
S
tepping away from the classic MINI design of cool but compact, stylish yet affordable, the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is a walk (or should we say drive) in a whole new direction for the car manufacturer. The makers of this model want us to know that it’s a “natural athlete” of a car and that we can really vouch for. The car’s exterior is something to celebrate – especially when it helped us comfortably hit 140km on the highway between Dubai and Abu Dhabi on some of the windiest days – there was no shaking, or loss of steering – this hunk of steel is strong and sturdy to say the least. Immediately, you’ll find that the car’s true forte is handling. Its agility highlights the power of the MINI brand, and it’s impressive with a low centre of gravity, wide track and all the benefits of a tight, well-tuned suspension. The speed-sensitive steering provides excellent feel in the turns and at lower speeds, such as when turning onto narrow streets and manoeuvring into a parking space. Works Countryman expresses the model’s distinctive combination of extreme athleticism and exceptional versatility. It is unmistakably the biggest top athlete in the MINI family of John Cooper Works models – standing at a height of 1,557 mm and spanning a width of 1,822 mm. At first, we were unsure of MINI stepping into the realm of small SUV territory – though the John Cooper Works Countryman sits in the subcompact SUV category – but we soon changed opinion when it came around the corner boasting a bold yet modest silouhette. And let’s get one thing straight – it’s not trying to be your next offroad adventure car, but take it out for a spin between the Emirates in harsh weather conditions, or make it your choice of vehicle for running errands and going to important meetings – the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is perfect for all of this, and then some. The typical proportions of a dynamic all-round sports car are further emphasised by model-specific features, in particular the John Cooper Works Aerodynamics Kit. Key elements of the car’s powerful appearance include the large cooling inlets in the front apron, which take up the space reserved for parking lights and fog lamps in the new MINI Countryman. The standard roof rails and the model-specific roof spoiler underscore both the height of the body and the fact that its design is geared towards optimum aerodynamic balance. The side turn indicator surrounds known as side scuttles bear a red accentuation line and the John Cooper Works logo, as does the hexagon radiator grille with characteristic honeycomb 64

pattern; the logo also appears on the tailgate. There are four non-metallic and six metallic variants to choose from for the body finish of the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman. Here, the Chilli Red paint finish is accentuated by contrasting features in Black – a car that looks READY to perform. The second generation of the MINI Countryman is the biggest and most versatile model in the entire range of the tradition-steeped British brand. With an output of 170 kW/231 hp (combined fuel consumption: 7.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 169 g/km), it is the most powerful engine ever to be fitted in a MINI: in combination with the standard all-wheel drive system ALL4 and a robust vehicle concept, it ensures that the latest addition to the motoring world takes the MINI experience to a whole new level – in terms of both race track feeling on the road and extreme driving enjoyment over unsurfaced terrain (we dare you to take it all the way south and back up north just for fun – it’s an exhilarating drive). The new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds with both the standard 6-speed manual transmission and the optional 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission. In doing so it is 0.8 or 0.7 seconds faster than the MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4. Its superior performance qualities are likewise reflected in its elasticity on interim sprints, cornering agility and deceleration performance. So, whether you’re planning to cruise down Sheikh Zayed Road or head into the city for shopping on the busy streets, rest-assured that this car can tackle every road and driving environment. These qualities are the product of an overall package that has been compiled based on John Cooper Works racing expertise, including not just the engine and all-wheel drive system but also a sports suspension with 18-inch John Cooper Works light alloy wheels and Brembo sports brake system, special body features to optimise aerodynamic properties and cooling air intake, and a model-specific cockpit with John Cooper Works sports seats.

The exceptional standing of the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman within the premium compact segment is underscored by means of exclusive standard features including MINI Driving Modes, LED headlamps, Comfort Access and the Radio MINI Visual Boost. Cosmetically, the vehicle’s exterior body features highlight its jaunty credentials, as well as improving the crossover’s aerodynamic properties. The vehicle’s interior is just as pleasing. There’s a characteristic sports car atmosphere with the space and versatility of what you would expect in a full-sized SUV! In addition to John Cooper Works sports seats with integrated headrests, features such as the John Cooper Works sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons, the John Cooper Works gear or selector lever and the roof liner in anthracite, all contribute to the car’s intense feeling of racing flair. A distinctive cockpit design is combined with optimised space and a high degree of flexibility. Head, shoulder and leg room are significantly more generous than in the predecessor model, both at the front and the rear. The rear seats can be shifted longitudinally by up to 13 centimetres in a 60 : 40 split, while additional usefulness is provided by backrest elements that are tilt-adjustable and foldable. We were thrilled with just the standard features like cruise control with brake function and the Radio MINI Visual Boost including USB socket and operation via MINI Controller on the centre console, and there is a 6.5-inch screen in the central instrument that displays a start motif specific to John Cooper Works when the driver gets in the car – this means that you can personalise your driving experience, which is especially great if you’re sharing the car with family! Another great element of this vehicle is the driver assistance systems developed for the current model generation to enhance comfort and safety in the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman, too. The standard collision warning with city braking function can be extended to include the Driving Assistant system with camera-based active cruise control, pedestrian warning with initial brake function, high beam assistant and road sign detection. We can’t begin to tell you how useful this is when it’s peak
That’s one less problem to deal with on the roads! MINI has created an ideally-sized offering for drivers looking for a compact crossover with premium performance and features, well ahead of its predecessor – all whilst keeping that MINI magic that make its vehicles so popular. ✤

THE ABS EFFECT If you are tired of misguided fitness advice and not getting results no matter how hard you try then it’s time to visit Abs Sharma and his team of trainers. Words by Angela Beitz Hi Abs! Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into the fitness industry? I’m from the UK and have been in the fitness industry 20 years. From the young age of 14 I took work experience in a fitness centre. Since then I have developed through various education streams and working roles to reach this point of starting my own company in the UAE. In my career I have worked with over 1000 people on a one-to-one basis, transforming their mind and bodies. ABS was officially formed in February 2017. ABS is not based on my name, it’s an abbreviation for what we call “athletic body shape.” Athletic is to make us more fit and functional, Body is to connect the body and mind; shape is to create that desired aesthetic look. What gave you the motivation and idea to set up ABS? Since a young age I knew my purpose was to help people get healthier and happier. As a man, having a close relationship with my mother and sister gave me sensitivity towards the challenges women face and my goals have also been to empower and uplift them. I saw a need for real and genuine help for women, where they were not subjected to the confusion and misguidance that the fitness industry provides. The motivation is to help women to increase self-value, confidence, health, wellbeing, and fitness and to do all of this using only natural means. The natural way allows people to embrace who they truly are, heal their body and not become distracted with unrealistic pressures of society. The natural way allows us to reach the highest level of happiness which we are all striving for. How do the training programmes work? We have training programmes for all body types and goals. This includes those people who are overweight to those that are slim. In addition, we actively work with clients that have medical conditions, where we prescribe the correct stimulus to heal their bodies naturally. In some instances, we liaise with good Doctors to approve our processes or re-direct clients to better specialists. Here, the aim is to heal the client rather than give them medication, which damages the body and inhibits them achieving their body goals. Whatever your genetics or aims we will help you get there. We provide one-to-one training, partner training, group training and online programmes. We have also recently opened a Men’s Division to help transform Men. Tell us about your ABS team and how they can help people to achieve their fitness and wellness goals? We are lucky to have such stable minded, caring, passionate and talented women in the ABS team. The interview process for these women was extremely thorough and it has taken 18 months to find only five suitable women for the role. We interviewed many women across the world and only these women have satisfied the criteria. They are real life angels, blessed, special people that are born with a super power to touch people deeply and change many lives. All these women will become world class and will be reputable not just in the UAE but also across the world. They are not just personal trainers; they are Superwomen, changing one life at a time. All of the ABS team who have been taught using the ABS method, which allows them to transform their clients body in the most safe and effective way. They are all capable of taking any client to achieve their goal whatever it may be. How important is diet? What would we find in your fridge? Diet is the most important aspect not just for transforming your body, but as a whole the most important action we make as humans in general. What we put into our mouth dictates everything! Diet affects 1000’s of processes in the body including recovery, our body composition, our immune system and our stress levels. Everything is linked to diet. If we get sick and reach a stage of being diagnosed with an illness or cannot change our body, it is because we have neglected our diet and abused our bodies by not giving them what it needs. If you don’t look after your body with what you eat, eventually it will give up in some way, 70

FITNESS INTERVIEW • so don’t take it for granted. My fridge in general would consist of organic foods; meat, fish, eggs, cruciferous vegetables, berries and mineral water; hydration is extremely important. What are your best tips in terms of diet and staying healthy? My advice is to eat fresh, non-processed foods. If you look at a label and it has many different ingredients, especially with long words on it then it cannot be healthy. For example, fish is fish, nuts are nuts, greens are greens (nothing is added – they are healthy). Don’t snack, don’t overeat, and don’t consume too much sugar. Avoid bad fats and eat plenty of good fats. Avoid or cut down on your dairy and refined and high GI carbohydrates. Don’t follow a diet that was not made for you, everyone is different and not everyone can eat the same foods. If you would like to know more about diet feel free to contact us we would be happy to help. Our diets are specific to how your body’s hormones are functioning and your body goals. How do you maintain your health and fitness routine while travelling? We actually have a fitness programme that was designed for Emirates Cabin Crew and suitable for anyone who travels a lot for their job. To maintain your healthy lifestyle you have to ensure you prepare your food in advance or check what healthy options are available at your location. Discover what workout options you have close by and the instances where you don’t have any you can do a bodyweight workout in your hotel room. Furthermore, make sure you listen to your body and match your workout intensity according to how much you have rested. What do you dislike about the fitness industry? l Photoshopped pictures and videos l Fake bodies (butt implants and injections), we can change our body naturally and look better. l People on social media pretending to embrace fitness because it’s cool and not because they really want to get healthy. l Personal trainers that claim to be transformation experts but can only transform their own body, they cannot help anyone else. More evidently using one training way with all their clients. Everyone is different. l Personal trainers who keep showing how good their own body is. l Fitness supplements are a scam! The best way to change your body is using wholesome food. l Personal trainers that have taken drugs to change their body and then tell other people their body is achievable, giving false standards and hope. Do not ever take drugs to change your body, they are extremely harmful. l Silly fitness equipment, like EMS and waist trainers. Some of these are harmful and not natural for the body to use. There is no quick way to achieving your best body. l FAD diets that are extreme, unsustainable and damage the body.
What are the most important factors a person needs to take on in terms of changing their body and becoming fit and healthy? The first is your mind set, you need to be disciplined, committed and willing to struggle. Not being influenced by friends and social activities. Communicating with their personal trainer regularly and being honest about their habits and out of gym activities. What are your tips for anyone who wants to change their life and get healthy? You need to assess everything in you life. This includes your environment friends and who is around you, reminding yourself why you want to do this. Get professional help, we cannot develop without help. Make sure the help is stable minded and lives the life they preach honestly. Set big goals, but make small but positive improvements daily and work on your mind first, everything else follows. You run a fantastic business that is based on positivity and changing people’s lives; how does it feel to be helping people change & heal their bodies and mindset? Thank you for this opportunity and platform to share what we believe in. We believe that improving someone’s health and happiness is the purest and most rewarding job in the world. Our own achievements don’t really matter; it’s what we can do for others that makes us feel so happy. It is a great honour that we are able to help someone unlock the magic inside them, allow them to be free, liberated and accomplished. More so improve the quality of their life and allow them to have a better relationship with their loved ones. WOMEN Taking the dream logic aesthetic of the cult series Twin Peaks as inspiration, the women’s collection is a mix of ladylike statement pieces and borrowed-from-the-boys wardrobe classics. Fifties movie icons, with their era-defining looks, provide further nostalgic stimulus. Opt for the chic precision of a sculpting wool dress and a cropped wool cardigan, worn under a nipped-in coated cotton trench coat. Or embrace your inner lumberjack, with the must-have indigo precision denim jacket and sturdy turn-up jeans, a jersey turtleneck lingering underneath. Then there’s the enlivening neon pop of a fuchsia-red feminine pleated skirt, set against the subversive wood grain print on a grungy viscose-silk suit. From square-toed boots to college kid cardigans; rough-and-ready selvedge denim to super-slick suiting; hard-edged biker jackets to bow-tied blouses, the H&M Studio collection has a neo-noir impulse this autumn, but there are multiple modern ways to wear it now. ✤

HIM Heading on campus, the men’s collection embraces classic, Ivy League collegiate style, but subjects it to a series of clever contemporary and rebellious punk revisions. Set the new curriculum in an authentic retro duffel coat or a corduroy-collared, coffeehued, recycled-wool western jacket paired with a varsity letter sweater. Go mad-for-plaid with fresh-yet-fierce punk trousers and the cropped puffer jacket, its traditional saturated tartan given a modish update thanks to an athletic silhouette. Take on the preppy appeal of chunky cord slacks in a crisp navy cut. Will you welcome the season’s key piece, the traditional toggle-fastened navy duffel coat in a sporty, scuba-style wool? Or play the class ace via the navy varsity sweatshirt, with its authentic Harvard University emblem? More expert layering statements include the tartan puffer jacket, a casual take on dapper plaid, and the wool collegiate letter sweater, in a cosy melange of steel grey and cream. ✤

AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE FROM AUGUST 2018, IKEA together with its partners have created concepts to work across entire homes rather than individual rooms to fully engage people. With a focus from lavish to minimalist, there are six new collections, each telling their own story and expressing their own personality. With a special focus on sustainability, in terms of environmental practices and cultural integrity, IKEA collections focus on stabilising environments outside and inside the home. The TÄNKVÄRD collection lends itself to elements of fluidity, a certain way of living, which focuses on earthly elements such as rattan, cotton, linen, jute and seagrass. All elements fuelled by flexibility and sustainability. Working with artisans from India, Akanksha Deo, the collection’s designer, explores various handicraft techniques for bespoke home furnishings. Following a similar theme, the ÖVERALLT collection, a product of collaboration from ten African designers and four IKEA designers. The collection is a partnership spanning continents and disciplines. Integrating culture with design, the collection aims to breathe life into age old stories and traditions from the African continent. IKEA’s focus on affordable technology is brought to animation in this year’s collection with FREKVENS. The FREKVENS collection makes technology accessible and easy to use, when put in the hands of a teenager. An integrated light and sound system, apt to boost the atmosphere of a mediocre house party, IKEA enables teens to conjure their imaginations to reality with their new technology collection. ✤

FARMHOUSE FLAIR
Bleu Blanc by David Myers isn’t like any other restaurant we’ve had the pleasure of visiting in Dubai. From the moment you pass through the sea-blue-coloured door located on the exterior of the Renaissance Downtown Hotel, Dubai, there’s a real sense of place. Call it a moment of arrival if you will. The blue of the door evokes images of azure waters and clear blue skies, but it’s the food that FACT’s David Tapley has to rave about the most… fact magazine

unches of dried lavender fill metal pots lining the walls at Bleu Blanc, while a glass elevator rises skywards into the restaurant space. A French farmhouse setup that is both chic and charmingly rustic. The space has been designed with precision and offers immediate appeal, from the sleek bar area to the large open show kitchens, interactivity is at the fore of the Bleu Blanc experience and it appears as though nothing has been overlooked when it comes to the design of this particular space. Stunning views of the Dubai Water Canal, check. An Instgrammable feature wall created from a collection of hanging wooden spoons, check. Yet aside from the visual appeal, it’s a unique aroma that really draws diners in. It may seem unusual to describe the smell of a restaurant ,but you see, Bleu Blanc are doing things a little bit differently from the Dubai ‘norm.’ A large wood-fired grill forms the focal point of the restaurant, like the hearth of a farmhouse fireplace. Emanating both a comforting warmth and a naturalistic smell from the wood used in creating the flame. Interestingly, elements of every dish at Bleu Blanc utilise the fire in some way, whether that be grilling, baking, or smoking. The fireplace is the heart and soul of this particular restaurant. Our dining experience at Bleu Blanc revolves around their newly launched Chef’s Table experience known as The Grill Counter. Placing us on raised seats at the marble counters directly in front of the open grill. The restaurant may be the brainchild of celebrity Chef David Myers affectionately referred to as the ‘gypsy chef’ (the man responsible for both the casual Italian Basta and hidden speakeasy Poppy, that also hold residence in the Renaissance Downtown Hotel, Renaissance Downtown Hotel, Dubai Dubai). Myers may be absent when we dine, but we’re more than happy to be in the capable hands of Executive Chef Alex Szkaradkiewicz who boasts an infectious personality and a passion for quality ingredients. Serving up homely plates of modern Provençal cuisine, the food selection is quite remarkable, and seated at the makeshift chefs table as the team construct their dishes around us, we’re woven into both the history and process of each individual plate. From the robust pesto ravioli which derives from Szkaradkiewicz’s grandmothers recipe, to lesser known ingredients such as oxtail, used to startling effect in a rich oxtail toast served with pickled onions and spicy cucumber. The Bleu Blanc Chef’s Table is a truly bespoke dining experience that presents highlights from

the a la carte menu which is broken down into - breads, raw, vegetables and wood-fired mains. It’s particularly difficult to pick a favourite, though the luscious Maine lobster in charcoal buns drenched with saffron aioli and the delightfully fresh sturia caviar flatbread are hard to beat. In each dish it’s the penchant for natural products that sits front and centre and we sit in disbelief at the gargantuan king crab legs cooked in lashings of brown butter and finished simply with a squeeze of lemon, a dish that speaks volumes about the simplicity. The sourcing of fresh seasonal ingredients has long been a debate on the Dubai dining scene. With quality and food miles often points of contention, yet when it comes to Bleu Blanc’s Kelly Oysters (served raw or baked) or the butchers cut ‘bone-in’ rib-eye, both deriving from Ireland, the sheer quality speaks for itself. Consistency is also key and watching Chef Alex engage with guests throughout the restaurant, weaving himself into the overall experience is something that works so well in this particular environment, that a Chef’s Table seems like the next logical step for an already popular restaurant, lauded by critics and diners alike. The Grill Counter will be available from September 2018 on a first-come-first-served basis. A bespoke experience starting from AED350 per person with each sitting accommodating up to six guests. The team at Babel did a wise thing setting up at La Mer, Dubai’s hottest beach and dining destination. Firstly, footfall (even on a humidity heavy Friday night the boardwalk was bustling) and secondly, because it turns dinner into an experience before you’ve walked in the door. ocated at the southernmost stretch of La Mer’s boardwalk, Babel is housed on two floors. If we’re truthful, from the outside it looks pretty much like the other restaurants (the one downside to the identikit styling of La Mer). What Babel has to make it stand apart though, is a worldwide reputation. Dubai is the group’s fifth opening in a small army of restaurants dotted across the Middle East. Babel’s original flagship is located in the culinary epicenter of Beirut and has spent almost ten years at the top of the city’s best restaurant lists for its gamechanging take on Lebanese classics. Stepping inside the thankfully air conditioned interior of Babel Dubai, the first thing we notice is its seafood counter groaning under the weight of whole iced fish and still-twitching crustaceans. Seating is available inside and out on both floors, and we’re led upstairs to a corner table overlooking the sweeping bar. More of the aforementioned fairy lights brighten up the top floor terrace outside while, inside the ceiling is set with flickering LEDs to create the enchanting effect of a night sky. As smart as the interiors are, like anyone who has done their homework on Babel’s culinary history, we’re here for the food – and it doesn’t disappoint. First we’re offered complimentary talame bread, soft piping hot pockets to scoop up an addictive chili and vegetable dip. This comes with dishes piled high with fat green olives, seaweed and toasted nuts. Formulated with sharing in mind, the menu is divided into meat or fish set mezze and a la carte. We go for the latter with our efficient waiter effortlessly directing us towards add-on vegetarian choices for the non meat-eater in the party. Once that decision is done, its time to scuttle downstairs to the gleaming fish counter to pick our main courses. Where we’re told is a 50:50 mix of imported seafood and more locally netted fins. From the cold mezze first comes Hommus Beiruti, the traditional Lebanese take on the ubiquitous chickpea dip made with parsley, radish and mint. Babel’s version is just brilliant – smooth, flavour-packed and utterly addictive. Also impossible to put down are the Chilli Potatoes, a seemingly simple concept elevated to something so special we can’t stop reaching for them. Other hot mezze we sample include immaculately golden cheese rolls and Fatayer Spinach, hot pastry pockets

filled with tangy green leaves. To offset the fried options, we pile our plates with a pitch-perfect Tabbouleh and pertly pink shrimps on a bed of aubergine and tomato. By the time the fish course comes, we’ve overdone it on those crisp squares of potato (lucky as the deep-fried red snapper is a little dry) but find room for dessert. Tales of the air-light Chocolate Fondant have reached our ears pre-visit and it lives up to the hype – particularly when our waiter douses it in hot butterscotch syrup. We also try the Astha bel Ashta (astha icecream topped with astha and rose jam) – another twist on a Levant favourite and pretty enough to brighten up many an instagram feed. all us crazy but we’d much rather have a lie in on a Friday instead of dolling up to hit the weekly brunch scene. Unless, of course, brunch started at a more reasonable time like, say 3pm (don’t judge, beauty sleep is what weekends were made for). We know that Friday brunchin’ would be a more pleasant affair if only it began a little later and had less rowdy crowds – after all, isn’t the weekend meant for chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool? Give us a nice casual spot where good food and company blends perfectly with a laid-back ambience, and we’re there. So, what’s the solution? Easy. Scratch the Friday out and opt for a Saturday afternoon feast that a) will still let you have a lie in, b) doesn’t require you to dress to the nines, and c) offers non-pretentious food in an equally unflustered venue. With that said, the Lazy Grazing Feast at La Ville Hotel & Suites, City Walk caught our attention. You might want to skip breakfast and REALLY indulge here. This is more than your regular institution brunch. It’s a reinvention of what you thought brunches were made of. A sumptuous Saturday feast that is all levels of chill from start to finish. Graze’s new menu for the Lazy Grazing Feast is a celebration of fine food and crafted beverages, and, most importantly, it’s set in the beautiful rustic surroundings of an urban steakhouse. The concept is simple; there’s a wide selection of choices and convenience of time frames, where guests can choose any three-hour period between 1pm to 6pm on Saturday afternoon to come along and savour the food and drinks to their heart’s content. No buffet, no rush, and no invasiveness by other diners or the staff. Just how we like it! Reflecting the restaurant’s relaxed ambience, social setting and sharing concept, the boutique hotel’s Executive Chef Moritz Neumann has curated the new brunch menu featuring meat, seafood and vegetarian options. Delighting brunch sceptics, you can experience a little (or a lot of) everything, as the new sharing menu includes enough to please everyone at the table. Fin de Claire Oysters are a great intro to oysters for any first-timers - tip: squeeze some lemon and a dash of tabasco on for optimum taste. Fans of the mollusc will appreciate its fresh flavours. Beef Marmalade Toast is a dish that outshines all others with its simplicity, the pickles complementing the sweet, sticky beef, deliciously.
