Get Summer Body Ready!

Take care of your body, it’s the only place you have to live.” – Jim Rohn

W

hen all has been said and done, the sweet scent of dessert still lingers near and the last meal at QIFF was oh-sodelicious; reality really does start to kick in. I feel like this is officially the end of excuses as my Editor-in-Chief keeps making me read about a healthier lifestyle. I do love my crème brûlée as much as any dessert baby would but, the reality is that a lifestyle change is really needed. It’s not just because summer is around the corner (it’s my third issue and it’s still cold, you guys!) but, the fact that the brunches ain’t stopping and the winter body is being stubborn is sending red signals my way! Well, we’ve got everything wrapped up in this issue, which I swear I will also follow, so we can get started on that lifestyle change soon (promise!). Turn to p29 and kick start your journey with our ultimate A to Z guide on achieving the summer body you want the healthy way – no fad diets, no crazy detox teas, no one-time procedures, these are just fun activities, good foods and more that you can introduce you’re your life and start reaping the benefits. Apart from that, we have been experiencing a bit of everything in Doha. I feel so blessed to be working in a place where I get to meet such diverse people; from the Young Picasso Hamad (p46) to the renowned Chef Nobu (p76); I really did get around last month to bring you the best of what Doha has to offer. I got to experience haute-dining at IDAM (p79) and then came back to some good old Italian food at Sirocco (p87). If you think the culinary expedition stopped there, think again. The FACT team headed for Turkish goodies at Sazeli (p91) and then back to an old classic at JW’s Steakhouse (p83) and there you have it – all the food for the win. Life is treating us to sweet little luxuries and, we were lucky to unwind at the CHI, The Spa at Shangri-La Hotel Doha (p95)as well as checking in for a lovely Staycation Spotlight experience at the 5-star Millenium Plaza Doha (p48). This issue is diverse in every sense possible and honestly, March was nothing but crazy (the good kinda crazy). I may be biased because it’s my birthday month but March, like always, was a delight! I send you good vibes as you flip through the pages and I hope you all are as excited as I was while putting this issue together. Until next time…☺

ARTS Q&A •

Did you always want to be a painter or was there something else you wanted to do? I always wanted to be a football player, like every other kid. When I was younger, painting was just a hobby, I never thought I would pursue it professionally. But I saw people take it seriously and decided to consider being a proper artist. I enjoyed it so much that I know this is the path for me now.

Hi Hamad! We are in absolute awe of your paintings. What sparked your creative talent? Hi! It all started at the age of seven when I was living in the UK. My dad was an artist and he always liked to paint. I once saw him walking upstairs with a blank canvas and asked him if I could paint on it. And, he gave it to me. I didn’t have any imagination at that time and I remember there was a Cristiano Ronaldo poster on my floor so, I simply painted that. I added my own background to it, from my own imagination and that is when my dad saw something in me. After that, I started painting more and that’s when my dad told me that my paintings reminded him of someone. After showing him about twenty pieces, he showed me Pablo Picasso’s painting. And I said, “Look, Dad! He paints like me!”, and he said, “No, you paint like him!”. Your exhibition revolves around the concept of “Past to Present” where you are showcasing work from 2014 – 2019. So, what are you trying to show with this comparison? With this exhibition, I am trying to show that talent can come at any age because there are some paintings here that I did in 2014 which are better than the ones I did in 2018. So, you just have to be brave about what you know and show what you can do. And, I like the idea of past and present because I can take all the paintings that I have, mix it up with my new work and I have a collection of different paintings for my viewers to come and see. Every painting of mine has a different movement, a different story.

For a 19-year-old you seem so calm and collected, did you ever go through a phase where you just wanted to change your career path? If I wasn’t an artist, I would be like every other teenager. So, I am thankful that I am an artist and I have something to do in my free time. I get to create something and be proud of it so, that makes me really happy. How do you stay so positive? To me, there is no point of being sad because when you’re sad, you will eventually become happy. I don’t see the point of putting myself in that mood. No matter what, you have the power to change your mood. Although there are many reasons to be sad but I believe in adjusting yourself. What do you see for yourself in the future? I want to be as big as Picasso! What is your message for our readers? You have to stay happy in life. You have to produce what you like, whether it is art or acting but, if you have a talent, you should show it. Don’t hide it. That’s my motto in life. ✤

The concept behind your paintings varies from ‘Don’t cut yourself’ to ‘Dinner table conversation’ and the descriptions of these have such a deep meaning. What is the story behind your work? They’re all bits and pieces from my imagination and I enjoy putting them together to see what will come out. Each painting has a story from my life but it is always incorporated with something from my imagination. I get influenced from everywhere: things I like, things I love, things that are nice to look at, the news – everything becomes art for me. Did you feel an added pressure when you became known as ‘The Young Picasso’? No, I never did because I was just a kid who was having fun! The Picasso title was just there, I was doing my thing for fun and it never affected me.

illennium Plaza Doha opened in April 2017. It’s designed for business customers with vast, brand new conference facilities and large dining spaces ideal for groups. It’s also an affordably-priced, modern hotel that is great for transit clients passing through Doha on a quick stopover or those visiting the Qatari caoital for a short break. Close by, the impressive Museum of Modern Art is a cultural goldmine and within walking distance are many luxury boutiques, electronics retailers, jewellers, global shopping outlets and every type of eating establishment you could ask for. There is also the historical charm of Souq Waqif, Doha’s vibrant market where many treasures can be found, and just ten minutes away lies the Museum of Islamic Art, all of which make this a great choice for leisure travellers too.

INSIDE THE ROOMS

The whole hotel is particularly modern and fresh. It looks, smells and feels fresh from the moment you walk into its bright and airy lobby with an impressive, curving glass staircase. White, creams and beige are the general colour pattern which keeps the bright, contemporary feel in the bedrooms. I stayed in a Club Room with a great city view and ample space and storage. The Club Room is designed to inspire creativity with its elegant colour palette and range of luxury benefits. My bathroom was entirely surrounded in glass but there is a modesty curtain if you are not staying in the room alone! The glass just makes the space feel bigger and less closed in and it’s a really neat idea. Staying in the Club Room gives you complimentary access to the Club Lounge where you can relax and re-energise with complimentary breakfast, snacks, and all-day beverages. Room service that we ordered was speedy and came with a smile. fact magazine

DINING CHOICES

Most of the guests eat in Circle which is located on the second floor with clear views over the C Ring road across the city. Circle boasts an abundant array of both Arabic and international flavours in their grand buffet. There is also an a-la-carte menu too. The vibe is relaxed and guests can come and go. Food changes on the breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets so you’re unlikely to repeat any dishes during your stay, maximising the variety of the experience. You can quite literally watch the world go by in the comfortable lobby lounge. It’s a great place to wait for other guests, wait to meet a visitor to the hotel or just while away some down time with a good book and a coffee. Slice which is just off from the lobby is a decent lunch spot too and you don’t have to go large there if time is not on your side. A simple but delicious sandwich can be rustled up there for those on the go - and it’s very filling! The delicious Asian inspired Toshi restaurant with its vibrant flavours and inventive dishes is also a favorite at the hotel.

AND RELAX...

I went down to the third floor where the spa and wellness facilities are located. There is an outdoor pool which I was not expecting. From the road, the hotel looks like a high-rise tower but does in fact have a small outdoor space with a pool and sun deck with loungers. I was able to top up the tan and take a quick dip in the middle of the day - it was a lovely surprise! The spa was spacious and brand new too. Staff were experienced and professional. I had a 60-minute Swedish Massage and can confidently say that I did not feel like I was somewhere new but a spa that I’ve been to for years. My therapist worked wonders and I left feeling lighter! Each treatment room has its own shower too which is a great option for those opting for more privacy or other treatments such as scrubs. Thumbs up! With a perfect location, all the mod-cons you could want, plus excellent service and high levels of comfort, Millennium Plaza Doha is a hotel that is ready to make its mark!

HOTEL HOTSPOT •

LOCATION

The Maldives is situated in the Indian Ocean some 400 miles southwest of the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent, making it a relatively short flight of less than five hours from Doha. Qatar Airways has two daily non-stop flights from Doha to Male; a redeye departing shortly after midnight and a daylight flight departing early morning. We were greeted by Atmosphere Kanifushi Island staff at Male airport and taken for light refreshments at the property’s arrival lounge, while waiting for our seaplane ride. The coral atolls of the Maldives are scattered across the Indian Ocean, just north of the equator. Kanifushi Island is just a 30-minute scenic flight from Malé International Airport via Sea Plane with Trans Maldivian Airlines (a return transfer is US$490, including taxes). On arrival to the Island, we had a very warm welcome filled with music and lots of smiles by Atmosphere Kanifushi’s staff members.

BEACHFRONT VILLAS

Imagine rustic-chic Beach Villas with direct access to the silky white-sand blue lagoon and surrounded by coconut trees and lush tropical vegetation. The entire resort is built with natural materials, timbre, granite and stone, the resort style is the perfect fusion between traditional and modern architecture. We checked into the lavish Sunset Junior Suite with direct beach access and sunrise

views. There’s too much to take in, but we were especially blown away by the open-air bathroom which takes up the space of an entire garden, the huge whirlpool bathtub was stunning and tropical plants line the walls of this heavenly space. Our next favourite area is the private deck which leads right onto the beach. Sun loungers have got our names written all over them – we spent so much time here relaxing and topping up the tan. Inside, it’s very spacious, you have plenty of storage room, a comfortable king size bed as well as a beautiful sofa to lounge on. However, the standouts of this room were in the little details. These included an array of high-tech toys and gourmet treats. The mini bar is replenished twice a day and you have your own personal room butler that will make sure you get everything you need to make your experience even better.

SERVICE AND FACILITIES

The service is faultless. Guests have their own personal butler to look after them throughout their stay, and the rest of the staff will soon feel like old friends. Facilities include the Akiri Spa by Mandara, Dive and Sail centre, Kids Club, Club House and five amazing restaurants to dine in! Daily snorkelling trips, excursions and adventures are also available upon request.

FOOD AND DRINK

Just because you are in the Maldives, at a

5-star resort in one of the most secluded spots in the Indian Ocean, doesn’t mean that the gastronomy is slacking. It’s very much the opposite at Atmosphere Kanifushi, where the food game is so STRONG. World cuisine is represented through the resort’s five dinning outlets. Here goes:

THE SPICE

The main restaurant on the island serves a wide variety of international cuisine, buffet style and live cooking stations are available here. The spectacular beach-side breakfast buffet caters to all tastes with American, Asian Continental and local Maldivian speciailties including ‘Mas huni’ (tuna with onion, coconut and chilli), or ‘Faro Mas Riha’ (a spicy reef-fish curry). The breakfast is a delectable spread. Flaky pastries, tantalising egg dishes, cereal bars, fresh fruit, healthy juices and so much more. They also serve lunch and various themed evenings such us Indian Ocean Night; a Culinary Journey featuring virtuoso cooking displays from around the Indian Ocean. The Passage to India soirée is a fabulously exotic buffetbanquet of curries, tandoors and dosa, with steamy cooking stations. The restaurant has a beautiful terrace that overlooks the beach. From the extensive breakfast to lunch and dinner, The Spice is infinitely beachside indulgence at its best.

THE LIQUID

The main bar of the resort serves an array of exotic mocktails and cocktails. Strategically located next to the pool, it is probably one of the most favoured locations on the island to unwind and absorb the stress-free Maldivian environment. fact magazine

THE SUNSET

One of our favourite spots on the island, the bar - restaurant has an infinity pool that offers a stunning view of the turquoise lagoon. You can enjoy a la carte lunch or dinner, the menu offers speciality fusion cuisine, showcasing Asian and Mediterranean dishes. The bar has a relaxed atmosphere where you can definitely feel you landed in paradise.

JUST VEG

Our absolute favourite food experience at Atmosphere Kanifushi had to be the venue that whipped up the most exotic flavours and unusual dishes. A masterpiece crafted vegetarian menu specifically for Jain Cuisine capable to convert the most committed carnivorous guests. A pure vegetarian restaurant, a FIRST in the Maldives, serving outstanding and delightful vegetarian cuisine from the Mediterranean, Middle East and Indian regions. Just Veg redefines vegetarian cuisine by experimenting with original flavour combinations, a truly vegetarian gem on the island.

TEPPANYAKI GRILL

At the resort’s Japanese restaurant, by the sea, chefs conjure up outstanding sushi, sashimi and Japanese fusion dishes. The show of Teppanyaki griddle cooking in the open kitchen is pure theatre. An authentic Teppanyaki experience, where you can enjoy a delectable dinner.

ACTIVITIES & RECREATION

The resort has a plethora of activities on both land and sea, for all ages – enough to keep even the fussiest of travellers entertained. Here are just some of the best excursions and pastime that we’d recommend:

SNORKELLING TRIPS

What lies beneath the surface? Go deeper into the mysteries and secrets of the Indian Ocean. Immerse yourself in the house reef and speedboat to spectacular sites. On our morning ride out to sea, our instructor and the boat’s captain go over safety procedures and reassure us that this is going to be one of the most amazing experiences of our lives. Little did we know how true this was until hopping over the edge of the boat and starting our soothing snorkel session. We spot intricate bouquet of coral and groups of colourful fish.

SUNSET CRUISE

Possibly one of the best excursions we embarked on at Atmosphere Kanifushi. Get ready for an unforgettable evening. The attentive staff had some canapes ready for the trip alongside the expertise to keep an eye out for the dolphins at sea. You will sail the blue water all the while watching the dramatic sunset and how the Maldives does day to night. It’s a spectacular view that you will surely want to capture on camera.

WATER SPORTS

Now, when we say that Atmosphere Kanifushi is a haven for on-water activities, we are not exaggerating. You name it and they have got it! The resort has an array of water sports: jet skiing, water skiing, wakeboarding, catamarans, windsurfing, paddle boards and much more. The choice is yours! ✤

• EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

LEGENDARY

Dining

Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, popularly known as Chef Nobu, has been wowing Doha’s culinary crowd with his fusion cuisine of traditional Japanese dishes blended with Peruvian ingredients – and we still can’t get enough. The renowned celebrity chef and restaurateur was back in town for a visit and FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan caught up with the man himself at Nobu Doha to learn more about his epicurean life and skills…

Your cooking has been referred to as ‘new style’ Japanese which we now refer to as the Nobu Style food. What are the trademarks of your cooking that have led to this? I started training when I was 18 and I started with the traditional Japanese food. After 6 and a half years of training, I went to Peru. That is where I was introduced to different spices and Peruvian cuisine. Basically, my style combines Japanese cooking inspired by the Peruvian delicacies. I even experimented on Peruvian food and added Japanese ingredients to make my dishes. That is basically the Nobu style of cooking. Which is your favourite dish at your restaurants? They’re all my kids, you can’t make me choose my kids! Since your trademark is to incorporate various ingredients to Japanese dishes, how did you continue this for the Qatar market? I like to make my food as pleasing to the local market as possible. So, we use a lot of saffron in our dishes here. Saffron is basically the spice of middle east so we made sure we incorporated that. Then, there are other foods that are made with rice and I substitute it with brown rice, especially for this market alone. Qatari people eat a lot of rice so we incorporated that. Similarly, we have something special for all the courses. What difficulties have you encountered having restaurants in over 22 locations around the globe? We have been managing pretty well because we have assigned 76

fact magazine

corporate chefs, managers, bartenders and an entire team dedicated to all of our restaurants. As for me, I travel for nine months of the year to make sure I visit as many locations as possible. We either have events or launches so I can meet the team and communicate. We are so lucky to be able to have our team. Do you source as much local produce as possible for each restaurant and does this have a big impact on the menu? My concept is to use local products as much as possible but sometimes it is not enough for my menu. We import some special ingredients from Japan because Japanese food, especially sushi, need certain products. I personally like the local spices here for the sauce that I add to my food.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW •

Your book, World of Nobu, is an introduction to the next generation of Nobu Chefs. What do you believe is the Nobu legacy that you have passed on to them? So far, I have made six cookbooks and this is my last project. There are 71 chefs who are featured in this book who have given three to four of their own recipes so; this book has over 400 recipes! We want the customer to know our Nobu chef’s and therefore, we have their entire profile in this edition. Young chefs are always looking for a chance to make it big. So, this book is going to do just that. It is going to give my chef’s a chance to be out there. I am here today because a lot of people gave me a chance. I worked hard and now I am almost 70 and, I finally feel like I did it. I believe in these chefs and that they will work hard and somewhere down the lane they will come to me and say it, ‘Chef Nobu, I did it.” We are not using any publishers for this book and a part of the proceeds will be given to charity. This is like my last cookbook, it is my life’s work! Tell us about the one memory that stands out for you during all these years? The turning point of my life was when I was in Alaska, where I opened a restaurant which got burned down after 50 days. I spent a lot of my money on it and 50 days later, I didn’t have any restaurant. I didn’t even have insurance and I lost everything. That was a very low point in my life and it was my family that rescued me. It was the fact that I had children, a family, that gave me the motivation wake up every morning and work from scratch. Sometimes I feel like if I hadn’t experienced that, I would still be in Alaska at that restaurant. This experience taught me to be patient and appreciate what I have at the moment. What is your advice for young chefs? I always tell my chefs to make mistakes. Never be disheartened by your failure because these are the incidents that make you who you are. You should never forget the mistakes that you make and you should always learn from them. ✤

A FRENCH EXPEDITION

Photography By Pierre Monetta

Raving reviews about the haute-cuisine dining restaurant IDAM had Anushay Taimur Khan all geared up to experience food like never before. With hopes set high, she headed to the Museum of Islamic Art to confirm the grapevine gossip of the most luxurious restaurant in town...

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

T

he Museum of Islamic Art has always been one of my favourite cultural hotspots and I have always heard great reviews about IDAM, so imagine the excitement when I finally got an opportunity to experience dining the Alain Ducasse way. Nestled on the 5th floor of the museum, I was warmly welcomed by the staff and then introduced to Mikko, the restaurant manager. I absolutely loved the entire monochrome vibes of the restaurant and as Mikko informed me, the tone was purposefully set in a way in which the food would be allowed to bring colour to the entire place. Phillipe Starck’s design concept is bound to blow your mind and here he emphasises the journey of discovery. The modern interior of the restaurant gives a regal look the minute you enter. The lush black carpets in the restaurant are beautifully calligraphed with famous Arabian folk tales, setting the venue up as a chic dining room with Arabian history intertwined with iconic design. I took some time to explore the restaurant since it was so intriguing and adorned in Starck’s choice of stone, glass and steel. I found the lamps to be my favourite feature. With messages on the LED strip in the centre of the lamp, I have truly never experienced design like this! There are two bookshelves set up on either side of the window that overlooks the skyline – a mesmerising view to dine with! I was taken to my table, which was impeccably displayed – there was not a single crease on the white sheets there. The attention to detail at this restaurant was blowing me away and I couldn’t wait to taste the food. I was served the signature dish, namely tender camel served with duck foie-gras and black truffle and as Mikko informed me, the meat is braised for six days for this little beauty. As you would imagine, the moment I had my first bite, I melted with the meat. The strong flavour and delicious sauces were the true definition of haute cuisine. The soufflé potatoes were an excellent addition to the menu and trust me, I’ve been trying to copy the recipe ever since because they gave such a unique twist to your regular, everyday French fries! Alain Ducasse is truly the architect of creative flavours as I experienced some delicious fine dining options incorporated with the Arabian twist that I was promised. The fact that Alain Ducasse holds 21 Michelin stars does not come as a surprise to me since the food and service at his restaurant is incomparable. With various activities and offers, such as their lunch menu set at QR200, IDAM

80

STEAKHOUSE CLASSIC

JW’s Steakhouse at the Doha Marriott Hotel is a bit of a foodie institution. People who have lived in Qatar for decades have probably been dining there for years; acquired good memories, celebrated great moments and shared special times with people who matter. FACT’s Craig Ferriman returned for a nostalgic dinner… fact magazine

83

• FOODIE CORNER

I

t has a reputation of reliability with a fan base of loyal customers who return to it frequently from both across Qatar and beyond! One of the qualities people love about this place is that it’s a source of continuity in a city of constant change. You always know what you’re going to get every time you go. Saying that though, there is a very special promotion that I checked out on my last visit that is rare to find if not completely unique in the city’s steak restaurants. They are serving up chateaubriand. This is of course a thick cut of the tenderloin fillet. We’re talking five hundred grams of prime tenderloin. It is the French version of the English roast. It is so big, you could not possibly have it alone which is why it is served for two and makes for an ideal sharing option for dates, couples and those dining in a pair or more. The chunky beef, best cooked medium rare in my view, is brought out on the wooden trolley and carved before the customer. The sides were impressive and not the after-thought that they can sometimes be in many a steak restaurant. Really good, creamy mashed potatoes, sautéed mushrooms and creamed spinach all filled out the plate with panache and made for a thoroughly pleasing dinner. By complete contrast, the chef recommended that we have the deluxe seafood platter for two which worked rather well ahead of the meaty main. There was so much seafood, I’m sure it could have fed four! Warm water mussels, prawns, lobster, oysters, squid and plenty else too were all in there. The restaurant has recently created a small terrace area outside in response to the national ban on smoking in restaurants. An unexpected added plus from this, for me, was that some of the tables and chairs in the middle of the restaurant were moved onto the terrace creating more space inside. I felt it looked a tiny bit cramped before but now it feels even better. All the features of a JW’s Steakhouse anywhere in the world remain though: heavy, leather-backed arm chairs, dark wood and intimate lighting for ample discretion. I’m a traditionalist at heart and JW’s Steakhouse get all the key things right. From sensible starters, to superb steak with strong sides, the desserts don’t let them down at the final hurdle. For me, a steakhouse worth its stripes, will serve up a mean cheesecake. That was the test for me and they really excelled. The cheesecake was a good size with a really creamy cheese and ended the experience on a high. We’ll be back sooner than expected. ✤ 84

AN ITALIAN DEAL

We heard that there was a new deal in town, being called the ‘must-have’ dining experience, so we sent our very own Anushay Taimur Khan over to taste some authentic Italian delicacies at a Business Lunch in Sirocco, Holiday Inn Doha – The Business Park, which blew our taste buds away…. fact magazine

87

• DINING FOCUS

O

n a Sunday afternoon, I got the ideal opportunity to review the Business Lunch at Sirocco. Since I have meetings all over town, I feel like it is the easiest to dine at the nearest hotel. Similarly, Holiday Inn was my choice for the day since I was on the other side of Westbay at this point. I was welcomed by their friendly staff and escorted to a table by the receptionist where I immediately dug in the food (thanks, hunger pangs!). I was pleasantly surprised to see the variety I got for QR60. The buffet table was diverse which included an entire spot dedicated to assorted bread, different cheese, a make your own bruschetta station and a salad bar. There was a pasta section in the corner where the chef makes your pasta live and you can simply choose what you want starting with the pasta, sauce, meat and whatever additional things that you want while you start off at the buffet. I started my meal at the salad bar where I mixed my own choice of toppings, salad leaves and vegetable, and since I totally fail at being healthy even at the salad station, I liked having a variety of sauces to add to my mix. I absolutely love the fact that you don’t wait too long before you dive into your main course because, with the lunch break, you know how the clock ticks! I was enjoying my hummus, bread, and some olive oil when my main course arrived. I always try a few versions of the main course and this day was no different for me. I chose 3 different kinds of pasta; the classic chicken alfredo, the mushroom risotto, and the spaghetti. Other options included the seafood pasta and you could also choose between the red or white sauce. I can be old school when it comes to my pasta and usually always side with chicken alfredo but, the risotto won this rigid heart over. I believe in having a slightly fuller lunch and the risotto served that purpose for me with the rich taste of cream & cheese. While I was eating my heart out and munching on the bread, I was served with the refreshing Sanpellegrino Aranciata which is a traditional Italian drink that has notes of juicy squeezed orange juice with a hint of caramelized orange and bitter oranges as well. For the first time, I honestly didn’t have the space for dessert but if you know me and my reviews, you know my meal will never be complete without having something sweet. If I have to pick, I will recommend the tiramisu, which comes in the perfect bite size, due to the bold flavor and the smooth cool cream. It is hard to believe that I had an entire three-course meal at such a low cost but, Sirocco is definitely bringing in the crowd with a deal as incredible as this. ✤

or a start, the restaurant is not in the mainstream food court. It’s slightly hidden away near the entrance South Gate 2 (write that down or commit to memory!) The benefit of being off the beaten track is that it has the luxury of space. Lots of it! There are two floors with copious seating space. The ground floor is for main dining but those who want to share shisha may do so on the first floor and that’s not all. There is a terrace at the very top that has been beautifully designed with plants and decking. Our timing was rather perfect as we went as the sun was setting and then all the fairy lights came on. It looked gorgeous. There are lots of closed cabanas where ladies can enjoy some privacy with their children. These can be booked out on a first come first served basis. There are rooms that can also be booked for private dining for groups who want some intimacy for a meeting or meal. The food is also excellent. His Excellency the Emir opened the restaurant last year alongside the president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Framed photos of that grand opening hang proudly on the walls. We started with the mezzes which quickly filled all available table space. The spicy tomato ezme was yummy, and the homemade hummus was fresh. The yoghurt with eggplant was full of flavour and the stuffed leaves exploded in the mouth, rich in goodness. So far, so good! A trolley then arrived with meat and carved slices of beef tenderloin, or lokum, were laid on our plates on the table. The beef shashlik kebab was as good as any I’ve eaten in Turkey. Cooked in a kind of stewed gravy, it was highly authentic. A test of a good Turkish restaurant is surely how well they serve lamb chops. Sazeli didn’t fail at that test either. The lamb chops are juicy and droolworthy - mouthwatering! If you have a sweet tooth, then you’ll be in heaven just looking at the list of desserts. They are as you might expect, all sweet, all Turkish and all good! A giant plate of baklava was on the table. As is the popular trend in Turkey nowadays, the baklava was cut open in half, plain ice cream was spread all over it and then the top half of the baklava was put on top of that to form a sandwich. The presentation of this is rather showy and despite the grand performance, the proof is in the pudding as they say. It was genuinely superb. The giant fruit bowl we also ordered looked at us wondering if we were going to give it any attention! What I also loved about Sazeli was how accessible the food was. All the meats, cheeses, fruits and pastries are on display and the kitchens are open

SPA & WELLNESS •

I

start my day with a class held at the gym. It was a crossfunctional 45-minute session conducted by their personal trainer. The session proved the perfect wake up kick as it loosened my muscles, warmed them up and toned various parts of the body. They offer two classes per day and personal training sessions are available upon request. Their fitness centre is filled with state-of the-art equipment. The personal trainer was positive, supportive and very encouraging – something I definitely appreciated (and needed) this particular morning. After my exercise session, I booked some time for relaxation and pampering at CHI, The Spa, The Shangri-La brand’s signature spa and wellness concept. CHI, The Spa is a dedicated five-star wellness destination for tranquility and rejuvenation, the perfect place to boost your overall health and well-being. Sounds like just what the doctor ordered! My therapist leads me to my room which is the perfect muted dark tones with lush and oriental features. The suite is equipped with steam-shower room, and private patio where you can access the hydro jet swimming pool. I am treated to a 60-minute relaxation massage using mandarin essential oil that’s meant to unblock any stagnant energy within the body. It does the trick, aches and pains melt away while I succumb to the expert hands of my skillful therapist Orange. She was soothing away all the tension in my muscles. After my treatment I felt light-bodied, free from tension and muscle pain. After, I am treated to a luxurious 60-minute facial with Epicuren Discovery, a Californian skin care brand very popular with all the Hollywood celebrities. Founded on the belief that beauty comes in many forms, the Epicuren way is personaliSed, curating the

perfect skincare ritual just for you. Epicuren’s enzyme protein complex, referred to as the Metadermabolic Enzyme, is the heart of the Epicuren line. This enzyme is a protein that is combined with a waterborne solution of B Vitamins to create a protein with intelligence. The enzyme encourages the skin to self-rejuvenate, similarly to how aerobic exercise supports your metabolism. Your largest organ, the skin, is replenished, receiving antioxidants and moisture, naturally resulting in a more youthful, vibrant appearing complexion. The Epicuren Signature Facial works wonders on my skin, while increasing detoxification, the appearance of the skin’s clarity, elasticity, texture and overall health improves immediately after the treatment. I finish my wellness day with a delicious lunch at Sridan. The restaurant is reminiscent of a traditional Arabian souq (market), Sridan takes you into a culinary journey with authentic cuisines from the Middle East and around the globe. No fewer than 10 food and beverage stations engage you with creative presentations, and live-theatre cooking and preparation. I opt for a tandoor chicken from the IndiansStation with some freshly baked naan bread accompanied by a sumptuous colourful salad. My meal was just perfect; fresh local ingredients cooked deliciously. What a fabulous – and filling – way to end the wellness day. ✤
