Stronger Together

Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much. - Helen Keller
T
imes are tough, but we’re stronger than that. I realise how everything is on hold and how our lives have been put on halt so abruptly - but I am so grateful for this time. Where we all - or some of us at least - are bored out of our minds, we have also been reconnecting with everything and everyone. I realise now, more than ever, that I do NOT need to be a child with a three-month summer break any more. I LOVE my media and blogging family in Qatar and I have missed seeing them everyday. I realised how makeup is my lifeline as I miss experimenting with shades and most of all, I am so grateful for having a musical family. So as the husband and toddler strum on the guitars next to me, I am finally at peace as I realise I am up to date with all my shows and here’s the thing... I AM DYING TO GET BACK TO REGULAR WORK! That’s the thing with getting this break - we are aware of every single thing now. FACT however, has still been on that WFH (work from home) life and quarantining around town. We stayed in hotels and had dinners and lunches delivered at home, which you can find throughout this special issue. We had my blogging family come up with exceptional tips as Fatima Dhai offers up a list of things to do during this time on p23, and Dionne Lobo lets us know about all the delivery apps we need to go to, starting p28 - yeah, life is good as long as you have FOOD. Wouldn’t you agree? So here I am, contemplating my love between Rumi’s Red book and Enid Blyton’s Magic faraway tree - two favourites that I have not been able to read for a long time now! I am grateful, for my health, my community, this country that I now call home and all of you. Social distancing or not, I appreciate and love you all from the core of my heart. May we all see each other through this and cross paths out there soon! <3 Socially distancing-ly yours, Anushay. ☺

FABULOUS FOUR SEASONS The luxurious Four Seasons Hotel Doha has reopened, following an exemplary redesign by Pierre-Yves Rochon, returning to the forefront of Doha’s hospitality scene… FOUR SEASONS HOTEL DOHA is now open and welcoming its first guests following extensive renovations and a complete redesign by Pierre-Yves Rochon. The world-renowned interior designer has reshaped the property into an unmatched luxury destination at the centre of Qatar’s capital city, with residential warmth and comfort which is further enhanced by the friendly and intuitive service that is reflective of Four Seasons hospitality. The entrance has been enhanced with a grandiose door, reminiscent of grande dame entrances, and the Lobby has been redesigned as an open-plan space, allowing light to flood through the foyer as well as boasting views of the Arabian Gulf. The Lobby boasts an array of handmade and bespoke Italian furnishings, including a hand blown glass chandelier that takes centre stage and adorns the Lobby’s ceiling. Set along the picturesque beachfront of the Arabian Gulf, and in close proximity to the cultural landmarks of Doha, the vast renovations span an entire redesign of the Hotel’s bedrooms, suites, guest floors, Lobby and dining outlets. The public areas have adopted a range of greens to evoke the feeling of a garden and new life. In addition to offering Hermès amenities in all suites, and stateof-the-art technology, the Hotel will continue to pay homage to Qatari heritage with features such as mother of pearl inlay, whilst complementing a contemporary rejuvenation. Pierre-Yves Rochon’s inspiration was the capital city itself where the world of man and the beauty of nature meet. The redesigned rooms follow a soothing spectrum of blues and beiges reflecting the colours 10

of Doha, where the sky, sea, sand and earth come together and impart a more residential feeling. The rooms are equipped with energy efficient technologies, featuring automated curtains and lighting systems as well as temperature management preservation technology within the newly installed windows. “PYR has transformed this glorious seafront property into a refreshed and vibrant hotspot, whilst keeping true to its Qatari roots,” said General Manager, Jeff Rednour. “…the complete regeneration of this beloved property highlights the history and heritage behind it, whilst adapting to today’s guest expectations.” As well as a complete redesign of the interiors, the hotel introduces the expansion, as well as the redevelopment, of its diverse dining and lounge concepts. Arabica, located on the ground floor of the hotel, returns with a contemporary new look and coffee and dessert bar. Seasons Tea Lounge is luxuriously comfortable and exudes Parisian chic with a carefully crafted menu of French delicacies. The re-opening welcomes The Study, an outdoor bar and lounge concept, on a terrace adjoining the Library and Cigar Lounge. The completion of further enhancements will be announced later in 2020, and will include the launch of a refurbished space with a brand new concept by a celebrated Michelin Star Chef. ✤

PLAYGROUND FUN! The National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) has opened its highly anticipated children’s playgrounds, two specially created outdoor play areas that were launched as part of the second phase of NMoQ’s opening. Currently closed during social distancing, the parks will re-open when it’s safe to be outside again.
THE FIRST PLAYGROUND IS called The Cave of Wonders and has been constructed to replicate a dahl, or cave, with rays of light coming through openings in the roof. Inside there are glowing rocks, objects that emerge like archaeological finds from the sand, rock carvings, hanging bats and a giant gecko. Rahmah Bin Jaber, a historical figure and captain as well as a famous Arabian horse and pearl trader, inspired the second playground. The Adventure Ship Playground is inspired by his famous Ghatrousha – a type of dhow or Qatari boat. During their exploration children can learn about sailing, pearling, fishing, trading and other occupations and traditions that whole families became involved in throughout the ages. Through stories and songs, cargo and treasure, and imaginative play opportunities the children will absorb culture and feel a sense of pride as they reconnect with Qatari history. Both playgrounds are designed for families to engage in intergenerational play activities and aim to bring the NMoQ’s 18

collection and permanent galleries to life. The playgrounds encourage visitors to explore not just the galleries themselves but also Qatar’s natural and cultural offerings. Qatar Museums’ (QM) Chairperson, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, said: “We are committed to ensuring that museums are a place of learning for all generations. From the natural formation of the land to a time where Qatar was one of the major pearl traders of Asia, the playgrounds – similar to the permanent galleries at the National Museum of Qatar – are immersive and experiential, telling the story of Qatar and its people. “As we progress towards the second phase of the museum’s opening, we look forward to welcoming both children and adults as they explore two very important parts of our country’s heritage and culture,” he added. The NMoQ has designed and developed a wide variety of exciting and engaging learning resources for school, family and youth

audiences. The two playgrounds now join hands-on interactive gallery spaces, family trails, student activity booklets and more. Last year, the museum announced that TOTAL, one of the top integrated oil and gas companies in Qatar, is the official sponsor of the third playground that will focus on oil and gas. This final playground is set to open later this year. ✤

TAP AND ORDER… In the current situation, food delivery apps are a life saver. With everyone in self isolation and in the need to maintain social distancing, these are the apps that will help you stay home and stay safe, as chosen by Dionne Lobo of @24hrfoodie…
1. TALABAT Talabat is a popular food delivery service that operates in the Middle East. They have a variety of international and local restaurants to pick from. Their interface is easy to navigate and user friendly. They have one of the biggest supermarket’s Carrefour on their app, which is helpful for regular grocery shopping. They have tracking available on most restaurants on the app, which helps you know when the driver has left the restaurant and when he is in your area. They also have a tie up with Qatar Charity wherein they deliver meals you can sponsor to the needy. Their delivery charges vary from anywhere between QR5 – 10.
2. FINGERTIPS A new player to the food delivery game, Fingertips launched earlier this year. For a new app they have quite a few restaurants on their app and keep adding new ones on a regular basis. They have an option that is not available on most apps, where you can choose to view “Veg only” or “Egg only” options. This is an excellent option for people who are vegetarian and don’t want to look through an entire menu to find something. They have also recently added grocery shopping from Indian Supermarket 26

and Retail Mart in two locations. They don’t have a delivery charge as part of their launch offer.

NO TIME TO DIE WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
James Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. Unfortunately, his peace is short-lived as Felix Leiter, an old friend from the CIA, turns up asking for help, leading James Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.
DIRECTOR: Cary Joji Fukunaga CAST: Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?
No Time to Die is the 25th installment in the James Bond film series and at a 163-minute runtime, it’s the longest James Bond movie ever (you better make sure you go to the bathroom before you sit down to watch it). The movie features Daniel Craig in his fifth and final outing as the fictional MI6 agent, and as we see him donning the 007 mantle for the last time, it’s fitting that this concluding story will have a longer runtime, way more action, and a gripping storyline. Five years after the capture of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, James Bond has left active service. He is approached by Felix Leiter, his friend and a CIA officer, who enlists his help in the search for Valdo Obruchev, a missing scientist. When it becomes apparent that Obruchev was kidnapped, Bond must confront a danger the likes of which the world has never seen before. Will he survive? Watch and find out – yet another James Bond movie we’ve fallen in love with.
THE LOVEBIRDS WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

Velvet: Side A
By Adam Lambert
Velvet is definitely the perfect title for Lambert’s new album, as the sound is classic and the production smooth. The album’s core is a funk-driven, 70’s rock sound that is very different from his past work. Lambert effortlessly takes an old sound and makes it fresh for a modern audience. Album opener Superpower comes with a heavy bassline, smooth falsettos and some slick guitar riffs, and Lambert puts in a confidence that hasn’t been seen in his past work, with the lyrics only adding to the raw power of his voice: We can definitely hear the influence of touring with Queen in small moments of his album, and the team he worked with, including indie-pop engineer Tommy English, pop-rock producer Butch Walker and more, especially on Velvet: A Side. Glints of R&B, disco and dance-pop find their way through, without making the project feel oversaturated. To enjoy are songs like Closer to You, which opens as a simple piano-vocal ballad, before growing itself into a classic Pink Floyd-style slow jam, without making us question the transition. Velvet: A Side truly reveals the depths of Lambert’s talent, leaving nothing to be desired for the listener.
POP/FOLKROCK
Silver Landings By Mandy Moore
Mandy Moore’s seventh studio album Silver Landings is her first release in 11 years and spins with a folk-rock sensibility— a style in which she is wellversed. But the Moore we hear in this new album emerges older and wiser, with lyrics that are sadder compared to her previous albums. Silver Landings’ message lies in the importance of falling in love with yourself first, delivered via polished country-folk production and a confident vocalist ready to reveal a swath of life lessons. Opener I’d Rather Lose stands as a defiant mission statement, with soulful, mournful guitar mirroring Moore’s Linda Ronstadt-esque vocals, and Save A Little for Yourself outlines the dangers of giving too much of yourself away in a relationship, giving listeners not only good music, but also something to think about. As clear as day, Moore has successfully moved herself from a teen-pop singer to an adult troubadour.
By Kiley Reid Reid’s darkly funny debut follows Emira, a black, underemployed 25-year-old who splits her time between babysitting for a wealthy white family and working at Philadelphia’s Green Party office. When a late-night encounter with a grocery store security guard attracts unwanted attention, Emira’s life takes several unexpected turns, as she has been wrongly accused of kidnapping while babysitting a child. One of the most provocative page-turners of the year.

TIME-LAPSE MAGIC By now, we should all be used to light and colour manipulation. After all, we’ve been spoilt with choice when it comes to photo and video editing apps, and we all have someone to impress on social media. But with videos, there’s more than light and colour to manipulate – we can also manipulate time. The Huawei Mate30 Pro 5G is the perfect tool to help with this…
T
he opposite of slow-motion is time-lapse. These videos record change over time by showing a sequence of frames that are shot at set intervals. When the sequence is played back at normal speed, the action will look as if it has been sped up. In the past, photographers needed to hook an intervalometer to their cameras in order to take time-lapse videos. Fortunately for us, we can do the same thing with just our smartphones today. Time-lapse is a great technique for capturing a lot of subject matters, such as a long drive along winding roads or clouds moving beside you as you peek out from the plane – but none are mesmerising as day-to-night (or vice versa) time-lapses. There’s a reason why it’s referred to as the “holy grail” of timelapses Doing the holy grail with a traditional camera requires a good understanding of how to tweak camera parameters. Because of how the availability of natural light changes as the sun sets or rises, you’d need to set up exposure correctly before you start

(or on the fly), or you’d wind up with over- or under-exposed footage. But if you have a HUAWEI Mate30 Pro 5G, then it’s a different story. Powered by a Kirin 990 5G SoC and a fifthgeneration ISP, the HUAWEI Mate30 Pro 5G supports 4K low-light ultra-wide time-lapse video recording. The devices offer an Auto time-lapse capture mode that automatically tunes the devices for the optimal settings to ensure you get the best results in any scenario. Besides the Auto mode, you can manually set the frame interval or recording duration to fit your time-lapse needs. Of course, a Manual mode is also available for those who prefer to customise parameters themselves for artistic results. While you can take a day-to-night time-lapse video with just the smartphone, it doesn’t mean you should. The holy grail takes hours to capture – you don’t want to hold your phone in place for that long. Instead, plan for your shot. Before heading out, make sure you have packed a tripod for extra flexibility, and umbrella to stay cool under the sun or dry in the rain, and a power bank. Video recording can be battery intensive. While the HUAWEI Mate30 Pro 5G houses a 4500mAh and 4200mAh battery respectively, it doesn’t hurt to bring along a power bank to ensure your device stays powered during and after the shoot. Now that you’re set and ready to shoot with your HUAWEI Mate30 Pro 5G device, open the Camera app and swipe left on the slider below until you hit More. In the menu, pick Time-lapse, then frame your shot and start recording. If you want a bit more control over the frame interval, tap Auto to bring up the options. The second icon to your left lets you choose the speed; for the holy grail, we suggest four- to five-second intervals, which produces footage that speeds up real time by 120x or 150x. Huawei has also included some frame interval suggestions for other types of time-lapses, as seen on the Camera UI. For example, 0.5s and 1s intervals are ideal for cars and moving crowds, and 20s and 30s intervals are great for stars at night. ✤

ALARMY
FOREST
Sleep if you can! Cleverly designed to force you to get out of bed, Alarmy isn’t your regular alarm clock app. When your Alarmy is going off in the morning, you have to do one of five actions that you have preset to turn off your alarm. From solving math problems and shaking your phone for 20 seconds, to taking a picture of your bathroom — you can’t exit the app or turn down the alarm until you’ve fulfilled the task. We wish you a very good morning!
This app forces you to stay off your phone and just be present. How? You set a timer anywhere from 10 minutes to two hours (depending on how long you want to not be on your phone). Once you set the timer you plant a baby tree for your forest. Now it takes the amount of time that you set on your timer to fully grow that tree. If you go back on your phone and exit the forest app to check Instagram or text someon, it kills your baby tree. But if instead you stay off your phone the entire time, your plant grows into a full adult tree, and the credits you earn plant real trees around the world!

HONEST HEADPHONES Bose’s new Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 come with a sleeker look and feature tech that you never imagined possible. For connoisseurs of music, podcasts and general good sound, FACT puts the headphones through the paces…
F
eaturing the biggest leap forward in headphones since the iconic QuietComfort models, the new and long-awaited Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 is a complete redesign of Bose’s popular predecessor. With a fresh blueprint, improved sound quality, a touch-sensitive gesture pad for playback controls, and even USB-C charging, this is truly a feat for Bose. The headphones are a delight to use. They have been upgraded in every manner — and, trust us, you’ll feel the difference; a streamlined, lightweight stainless-steel headband with soft, angled earcups provides a perfect, comfortable fit. The underside of the headband features an ultra-soft gel foam material that sits neatly on your head. (And it won’t snag a single hair, either - bonus.) The new microphones let you hear the world around you, on your terms. Bose’s 700 debuts new pioneering technologies to magically transform the same public spaces into private rooms for talking with friends, family, and virtual personal assistants (Siri, Google Assistant, Amazon’s Alexa), as the new microphones are designed to pick up your voice better and also to reduce the noise around. Now, people can hear you better in noisier environments. On one of our quick trips to a very busy supermarket, we were able to stay on the phone usine the headphones with ease and no distruptions to the call or conversation. In fact, the sounds was crystal clear - like being in your own world whilst surrounded by shoppers, and everyday chaos!
You can personalise your environment with 11 levels of noise cancellation. As you increase the noise cancellation, you incrementally minimise the distractions you hear in loud places. Or, decrease it to the point where you hear the world as if you weren’t wearing active noise cancelling headphones at all. For quick interruptions, press a button for Conversation Mode to pause the music and let surrounding noise in — just perfect to quickly place a coffee order or checkout your groceries at the cashier’s till. Another key improvement includes a new touch interface with intuitive gesture-based controls. There’s also the Bose AR. A first-of-its-kind audio augmented reality platform that makes astonishing new audio experiences possible by helping you stay connected to your digital world and stay engaged in the physical world at the same time. Combining the power of wearable audio products, mobile devices and integrated apps, Bose AR unlocks the potential to experience fundamentally new ways to travel, exercise, learn and more by augmenting your world with content for your ears instead of your eyes. Offering maximum performance together with a beautiful, sophisticated design, the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 are the ultimate companion for everyday life. ✤

DOUBLE THE COMFORT THE NEWEST HOSPITALITY HUB HAS FACT’S ANUSHAY TAIMUR KHAN CHECKING IN FOR A WEEKEND FULL OF SURPRISES AT DOUBLETREE BY HILTON DOHA - AL SADD – THE EXPERIENCE WAS UNFORGETTABLE…
W
hen I first went to Doubletree by Hilton Doha - Al Sadd, I was surprised at its location which I soon found out was actually the ideal hub, given that Al-Sadd is being constructed to be one of the city’s public centres. The simple building is loaded with so many surprises that my weekend was preoccupied with so many cool and amazing things at this hotel. The warm welcome to the hotel has to be the highlight because it was literally warm – like a delicious cookie warm. Yep, a chocolate chip cookie was handed to me as the staff checked my booking details and I mentally made a note to make myself a cup of tea as soon as I got to my suite. THE SUITE LIFE The suite mimicked the comfort of a cute apartment that offers the luxury of just staying in. The coffee/tea machine, the dining table for four and seating for six made it the perfect setting for a small family to stay here. My room, on the other hand, was so spacious that even the addition of a baby’s crib looked small in it. With a TV in the lounge as well as the bedroom set up, it was easy to divide the family in two as we all needed some time to relax! As hoped, my cup of tea was ready in minutes, thanks to the readily available amenities in the room. I got my robe on and put my feet up in the comfortable cotton slippers; a break at last! 44

FOOD JOINTS I had already tried OPEN last month so my aim was to get the Indo-Chin and StrEAT experience. However, OPEN’s breakfast buffet and individual servings are still mention-worthy. Fresh juices, breads, cheese displays, fresh fruit, Arabic delicacies, these are just a few of the things that were part of the buffet. English breakfast and all the glorious options were in a menu so it was up to us to spend according to the budget. Last time I was at the hotel, StrEAT Culture had not properly opened as the special drinks were not available then – what is a bar without the special something? I was lucky to be in time for the all included experience and the pun on the word STREET did not disappoint. Street food from all over the world was listed in the menu and I got comfortable with some Mexican Nachos, Mumbai spinach pakoras, tacos, Belgian fries, The Cape Town Great Gatsby one-foot-long sandwich, plus the New York peri peri wings that will spice up your life, beef Stilton sliders from London, and then to celebrate life, the Chocolate Overdose dessert to make sure that the world is balanced again. Just a few words for this experience; OM NOM NOM! I loved the creativity on the menu and the entire bar itself was also an ode to the different ‘street’ get ups. The famous red phonebooths of London, served as the selfie points to make sure you feel like you’re dining in a completely different place indeed! If there was something that took my breath away, it would have to be the ridiculous amount of options and delicious goods that I came across at Indo-Chin. An Asian restaurant in its truest form, there isn’t a single item on their menu that won’t make you sing in delight. I would recommend getting the chef’s specials so you are completely sure of the dynamics of this menu. fact magazine

The Ritz-Carlton Doha and its uber-chic eateries have been a favourite of the city for a long time. We just had to get our Saturday Brunch fix and so FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan booked herself a table to tackle those oncoming new week blues with good food… fact magazine

L
uxury at The Ritz-Carlton Doha is a definition of its own. With the grandeur of the hotel, the world-class brand and even the staff that treat you like royals from the get-go, Sel & Miel was the only place that I hadn’t been to in weeks. You cannot blame me since STK is the one with all the tricks lately (I love you, Le Petit Chef!), but I was ready to experience the exceptional service and culinary delights at Sel & Miel too. Let’s just say, I was very impressed. The golden brass mirror as an ode to the beauty of Parisian interior gets you into that French flair immediately. Because, who am I if there isn’t drama in everything I do? The cane chairs and the soft linen at the table reflects a Parisian café vibe and I could not have loved a taste of Paris more at this vacation-deprived point in my life. The different seating sections and the beautiful views of the turquoise blue waters of the Gulf, are the perfect views for Saturday afternoon. The concept of the Saturday brunch at Sel & Miel is truly unique – instead of a buffet, you get everything served at the table and you actually have a menu to tell you what’s coming up next. The main course is a la carte, something that is again fresh and welcomed on the brunch scene, and you have a table of desserts ready for you with the pastry chef waiting to explain your choices. Truly a modern brasserie, I expected high quality at every step and I was not disappointed for even a second. 68

The appetisers arrived in true Parisian style and we delved into the assortment de charcuterie et ses condiments that my partner simply called dibs on, instantly. Whether is was the poached shrimps in a bouquet with its impeccable cocktail sauce to excite the dish, the steak tartare with the juicy beef, terrine de campagne’s luscious beef that made this delectable meal all the more delicious, I was in a Parisian
state of mind right here in Sel & Miel was offering. Vichyssoise, that is the cold potato leek soup, already had me dreaming of dunking the assorted breads from the artisanal bread trolley into the bowl, as it was being served. The croque monsieur further strengthened my belief that anything with cheese on it is always a good idea! The ambrosial turkey ham garnished with melted gruyere is an utterly world-class treat. As we were half way through the appetisers, the mussels in a pot were presented and we dived in, no questions asked. I especially liked the part where I got to choose my own main course. Out of the four options that had chicken, salmon, duck and lamb, I went for the volaille aux champignons et pomme de terre. Chicken as soft as butter with its juices dripping – tasty, warm, zesty – all of the comfort you need on a Saturday afternoon. The chariot de desserts were arranged in a great way to welcome guests if I must say, and the pastry chef convinced me to take a bite of them all. Honestly, it didn’t take much for me to stack my plate to taste all of them as I was already dreaming of this staple of the French life. Let it be the indulgent choice in pastries, the authentic French meringues or the fresh fruit that sits atop tarts, this is the treat we came for. To conclude, the Parisian Saturday Brunch gives a taste of the life that we all want; sitting on the corner of Mont Marte as life goes by and the family gets together for a feast with a few special drinks – aah, c’’est la bonne vie! ✤

AT THE CROSSROADS It was love at first sight for FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan when she visited the new concept of Crossroads Kitchen at Marriott Marquis City Center Doha. So, it comes as no surprise that her next dinner party was hosted there… fact magazine

M
y relationship with Marriott Marquis City Center Doha is a tale as old as time. One of the most easily accessible hotels in Doha that is nested in the middle of West Bay, right next to City Center shopping mall, I have made numerous trips from within the mall to grab a quick bite from various joints here. Cucina has been a favourite of the family to the extent that we celebrated my husband’s 30th there. With Crossroads Kitchen relaunching with a brandnew concept last year, I couldn’t stop raving about the new foodie joint that made its trip all over the world with just one stop. Naturally, I asked my friends to join me for the Thursday Night to get a taste of the cultural venue that Crossroads has become. The entire restaurant is super spacious and you can experience its full hustle with the open kitchen concept and the build your own salad table right in the centre. The tables are set and there’s a classic buffet style ambience. You’d think that the entire menu was taken over by seafood items but that’s the one thing I liked the most about this – a lot of the buffet was still in place! You could start off the meal with the salad and aromatic soup, pick a few items from the beef brisket coated in BBQ sauce, the salt-crusted salmon that added to the crunch in every bite, and the iconic comfort food mac and cheese with its cheese sauce serving as the stream of goodness in your mouth. To top it off, we crowded the sushi table and got an entire platter for the table – an array of tangy and mild flavours as per everyone’s preference. The highlight of the Seafood Night would definitely be the live cooking of the fresh fish to your taste! There was an entire set up of fish on the left of the kitchen where you can go and the choose the fish you want to eat and then trust the chef to give you the best of the deal – much-needed on a Thursday night! Bowls of boiled rice were going around as well as everyone selecting their style of fish, cooked with the chef’s magic touch. The mocktail selection just amplified the experience for us and we all got a sip of everything as a perk of dining in a group! The dessert selection was equally impressive and the staff was readily available to aid the group as we dined in the classic Marriott Marquis style. An evening very well spent! ✤

FERRARI ROMA MAKES ITS QATARI DEBUT The Ferrari Roma made its first appearance in Qatar at an exclusive customer event held at the Alfardan Sports Motors showroom. With its distinctive flair and style, the car is a contemporary representation of the carefree, pleasurable way of life that characterised Rome in the 1950s and ‘60s. The Ferrari Roma offers discerning clients the finesse and refinement that brings the concept of “la Dolce Vita” right up to date. Not only is the Ferrari Roma an icon of Italian design, but it also represents the pinnacle of performance in this category, thanks to its turbo-charged V8 from the family of engines that has won the overall International Engine of the Year award four years running.

T
he Fire Station has been a second home for me since I joined the FACT family. My hub for all things new and amazing in the art and culture industry here, the Fire Station is actually a recycled contemporary version of the actual fire station built way back in 1982. As it sits in the heart of Doha next to Al Bidda park, I believe it is the most convenient position that you can find an art gallery in. I remember I was invited for the amazing initiative of being introduced to the concept of the ‘Artist in Residence’ at the station when I discovered Cafe #999. A comfortable and casual environment that reflects the station’s raw look, this unique concept is the perfect addition to the gallery. I had wandered off to find some water and came across an entire restaurant so I was already grateful to the food Gods for hearing me out on this one. However, this time around, the cafe offered way more than it had during my initial visit. In all honesty, I hadn’t even tried going back because the food had not been memorable for me so when I took a pitstop for a juice, I was welcomed by an entirely new set-up and ambience. First and foremost, let’s talk about how they’ve updated their food experience to cater to a range of dietary requirements as well, since the Doha crowd has been diet-conscious for a while now. Healthy meals with vegan offerings as well, I was already enjoying this newly found attraction for the joint. Naturally, I was inclined towards all chicken dishes while the mister went for all the healthy options don’t ask me how we still dine together. I saw a few regular international bites that included pizzas, pastas and burgers so I asked the staff to help me out with my selection. A 999 twist to the popular regulars such as the chicken spring rolls that had a tinge of spice in their glaze, the exotic chicken salad with its Asian dressing elevating its flavour and the good old guac decorated on a bed of lentils; all the goods in life could easily be available here - that too on a calorie count! The serving was big enough for the two of us to share so there was absolutely no food wasted at our table. As for the main-course; I will hold this cafe as a benchmark for all others I try from today. Minced chicken wrapped in a brown crust, engulfing the flavours of the spices, came with an audible crunch in every bite, the Chicken Surprise was a dream. Even though the dish came bathed in cheese sauce, I never once felt like it was dry enough to dip into the sauce. In fact, the flavour on its own was so rich that I swiped the sauce off from my bites!

The lightweight baked san sebastian cheesecake was a new addition to my palate and even though it was not particularly for a person like me who likes her desserts sweeter than honey, the balance of the cream and crusty biscuits come together perfectly for someone with balanced taste buds. As for Mr. Healthy, he opted for the bite-sized energy balls in coconut, pistachio and chocolate. Sinful bites of devilish goods made me take a mental note to take these beauties home as munchies. As I asked for a banana caramel milkshake for takeaway and enjoyed the frothiness of the candied drink, I was ecstatic to be able to have this sublime experience. Their late breakfast that lasts until 3pm is definitely the silver lining to my life as I am someone who just craves breakfast foods during the day and having the opportunity only to do so until 11am for a beautiful eggs benedict is a dream. Thank you, Café #999 for making it happen with this menu! ✤

Luxurious Heritage Defined The city life had our editor Anushay Taimur Khan yearning for a break, so she headed to Souq Al Wakra Hotel to learn more about how to live that luxurious Qatari lifestyle…
I
f you’re walking around in Al Wakra, at some point you are bound to find a few characteristics that you will see all across town. From the beach to the muted sand-coloured houses and finally you’ll see it – Souq Al Wakra. Nestled right next to this gorgeous location, Souq Al Wakra Hotel can only be described as a private cocoon of dreams. I went to The Spa and all the while was in awe of how much an ordinary-looking building revealed a beautiful vogueish vibe beyond its automatic wooden doors. With hues of blue in the interior that paid tribute to water, the welcome was exactly what I needed on this day. Arabic tea and dates were served instantly as I sat in the comfortable lounge whilst waiting to be escorted to the spa. Considering this as an escape from reality, I strolled through the hotel and was checked in for my treatment. As I had opted for a facial, I requested for the consultation to be done outside in the outdoor lounging area. The fountain water added to the rhythm of my ensuing relaxation, and was similar to a soothing stream as I took in the delicate breeze that makes you believe you’re sitting in the garden of Eve. Fresh scent of the sea, plumeria flowers as decor in black bowls to give a contrast to the environment and the general ambience of the hotel was an absolute treat. I liked the treatment rooms, which go perfectly with the theme of the hotel. That is one thing I will point out; everything was in sync with the heritage look of the property and there was not a moment that didn’t feel soothing and natural. The changing room was connected to the massage room and I slipped into the beige sand-coloured robe and slippers, all set for my one hour of ecstasy. With green tea at my disposal and light chatter with Sherly, we began with a hot stone massage. Sherly’s velvety smooth motions and feathery touch made this a therapeutic experience for me and I found myself getting even more comfortable in the dimly lit room. I was uncomfortable with the heated stones to begin with so Sherly let them cool down before massaging them on my back again. The olive oil with the stones aided in silky movements as I felt my muscles relax because of the heat. The consultation form had my details which also stated that I was claustrophobic so Sherly made sure there was a little light coming in to make 78

me feel comfortable. Using olive oil as her magic potion of the day, the next one hour was spent blissfully with Sherly and her expert feather touch as the stress of the city escaped my knotted muscles. Like all good things, the massage also came to an end. After cleaning the makeup off my face with her smooth gestures, Sherly began to prep my skin for my facial that consisted of multiple creams and methods to clear my skin. I was waiting for some machines to be used or steam to open my pores but Sherly kept using a number of products without the help of any machines. I patiently waited as she applied a number of creams and lightly massaged my face with her feathery touch and I knew I made the right choice to trust her blindly. Till my face started to burn like a thousand needles were being injected. Turns out, the fruity acid exfoliating scrub was doing its magic and if I tolerated this for a few more minutes, I’d be surprised. Distracting myself by focusing on the music again, there were more creams applied and since it was Biologique Recherche, I didn’t mind being treated to one of the finest skin products. If the fruity acid was uncomfortable, it was nothing compared to the ice that was applied to my face. Even though it toned down the effect of the acid, it also made me shiver in a pleasurable shock. As I finished the treatment, Sherly gave me a summary for
my skin type and how the products included zinc extract and antimicrobial active ingredients like salicylic acid. The ingredients combine to tighten pores, fight acne-causing bacteria, nourish the skin, and provide lasting hydration. I was told about how my skin was sensitive to certain treatments and the use of the silicone scrubber sponge was ideal for it. The fact that this was used for the first time on me, after years of doing facials, left me in awe of the technicians here. They had knowledge from their own experiments and experiences and as I now feel my smooth skin, I realise how important it is to be more than just an experienced therapist. The bonus point of my treatment included makeup advice as well and as I sit online to read more reviews, I’ve already recommended the spa to my friends. The expert service, breath-taking views and the ambience of the spa is possibly one of the best experiences I’ve had locally. If you’re looking to break away from the monotonous hustle of the city and treat yourself, head to Souq Al Wakra Hotel and visit their Spa. ✤
