Reflect on You
“
"Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you." — Ralph Waldo Emerson
C
elebrating Ramadan in the Gulf has a charm you won’t find anywhere else in the world. I’m not sure what it is exactly, maybe it’s the life that erupts all over the city as the sun sets and people venture out of their homes to meet and greet, the bountiful dining opportunities where we eat to our heart’s content or the shorter working hours? Truth be told,
for me, there’s nowhere I’d rather celebrate Ramadan than the Middle East. And let’s not forget the anticipation for the Eid holidays. Personally, Ramadan is also time to put things into perspective and align my religious and social values, which unfortunately tend to wither away as the months pass by — and you don’t need to be fasting to benefit from this month. Ramadan is a chance for everyone to step back from their lives and reflect. Ramadan is also a call for celebrations around the world, each different and tied to unique traditions in their country of origin. This month, we take a tour of the Muslim world and how everyone celebrates Ramadan in their own unique way in our cover story (p26). So, travel the globe as you turn each page and rejoice in this Holy Month with the rest of the world. Speaking of travelling, we also take you on a relaxing and revitalising trip to the OZEN RESERVE BOLIFUSHI in the Maldives (p40). This journey will have you dreaming of white-sand beaches, vast ocean blues, and a much-needed vacation. We also sit down with Qatar’s art ambassador Muna Al-Bader, and have a chat about her success, her eye-catching works of art in blue, and her truly inspirational journey (p36). The images will you have gazing at the pages for hours, so make sure to visit her exhibitions in person when you get a chance. And not only do we round up the best iftar and suhoor deals in town for this Ramadan (p90), we also take you on some special gastronomical journeys with an urban camp experience at The Diplomatic Club (p71), and a preview of Coral’s Ramadan Menu (p79).

W
hile the FACT team was looking to make sustainable choices, we came across a delightful start-up that is not only good for the environment but helps us boost our social game as well - The Other Bowl. This local start-up is initiated by two university students, Dana Alaa Awadallah and Hussain Fahad Al-Majid, and manufactures and sells recycled coconut bowls, and cutlery, as well as bamboo straws and, soon, even coconut candles. “Our reason is to educate and inspire people to switch to reusable and zero waste alternatives to help save the planet,” say the team behind The Other Bowl. Two ambitious environmentalists with the aim of promoting sustainability. These items are sourced from Vietnam on family-owned farms, this also ensures that there is no exploitation of labour, as all items are handmade and handcrafted by artisan Vietnamese locals. From tree to table, each bowl is sustainably sourced and eco-friendly, to welcome a touch of nature into your home. Coconut bowls are increasing in popularity throughout the world as one of the most sustainable products today. They're 100-percent natural, bio-degradable, compostable and their production produces no waste. They’re made using natural resources and are organic and a fantastic example of making the most of

the plentiful natural resources at our disposal. The Other Bowl business venture thus makes use of useless stuff like coconut shells and bamboo shoots to produce useful stuff like bowls, cutlery, candles, and straws, which in turn save the world from environmental pollution and climate change. And as we get rid of the soggy paper straws or the harsh metal alternatives, bamboo straws come from one of the most sustainable plants in the world. Bamboo requires no fertilisers or pesticides and regenerates from its roots, so it doesn’t need to be replanted. It is biodegradable and reusable, making these items the perfect waste-free option, also bamboo can withstand both hot and cold drinks. The Other Bowl has a variety of options to choose from on its Instagram page, from the jumbo coconut bowl, a regular bowl, a cup, and spoons and forks. Giving you plentiful options for all your coconut needs; coming in both smooth and rough variations. The company also provides stock for sale at Evergreen Organics, at The Pearl-Qatar branch. ✤

RAMADAN AROUND THE WORLD
This month we begin the first days of Ramadan. A time for spiritual awakenings and reflection; Ramadan brings the Islamic world together under an umbrella of self-restraint, contentedness, perseverance, and togetherness. And, even though the world may not be able to celebrate this month in all its spiritual communal glory, we’ve rounded up some beautiful traditions from across the globe that make Ramadan, well, Ramadan. With Islam being a widespread and ancient religion, each country has intertwined its traditions and customs to make the month its own. It’s important to note that not all celebrations listed will be taking place as usual due to the pandemic, but it’s still beautiful to see how the world celebrates this month together. 26

Garangao
his is undoubtedly the most joyous Ramadan tradition we’ve come across, full of smiling children, melodic songs, and sweets. Now before we dive deeper into this tradition in Qatar, it’s vital to know that there are other variants throughout the Gulf countries known through different names; Garangao in Qatar and Bahrain, Karkee’aan in Saudi Arabia, Gargee’aan in Kuwait, AlMajeena Karkiaan in Iraq, Garangashoch, At-Tablah or Qarnakosh in Oman, and Hag Al Leylah in UAE. In Qatar it is said to be rooted in the pearl-diving tradition of the Gulf state, however, the details are not confirmed. Garangao is celebrated after the breaking of the fast on the 14th night of Ramadan. The name of the tradition comes from the Khaleeji word ‘gara’, which refers to the sound of things knocking together. It’s a cheerful tradition to reward Muslim children for fasting halfway through the Holy Month. During this activity, children dress up in their traditional clothes, carry decorated bags and walk around their neighbourhoods singing the Garangao song, in hopes of some neighbourly treats. The girls wear rich, colourful, embroidered jalabiyas and gold jewellery, while the boys are adorned in traditional Qatari thobes, jackets, and caps. Historically, children were given dates, rice and wheat, the typical ingredients used for a classical Qatari dish called Harees. But now they’re awarded sweets and nuts (not dissimilar to Halloween in that respect). 28
fact magazine
“It was the reward for the little fasting we did during the month, even if we didn’t understand much of what was going on, we knew exactly what was happening when Garangao came around,” says Noor Jassmi, a Qatari local. “I remember wearing my traditional jalabiya and wanting to always top up my look from last year, sharing candy with cousins. It’s definitely one of my fondest memories growing up.” During this time of the month, markets like Souq Waqif in Qatar are bursting with gift packages for Garangao, comprising of nuts, chocolates, and candies. Children sing the traditional song of ‘Garangao Garangao yatona atawna Allah Yatimkuk, Bait Makka Yuwaddikum (Give us, Allah will give you and send you to Masjid Al Haram in Makkah Al Mukarramah) while visiting their neighbours’ houses for gifts. A song embedded deep in the GCC history. This festival also brings echoing memories of Qatari culture and heritage which is narrated by forefathers to their children and grandchildren on the occasion. The whole country takes part in this celebration. Malls organise music and treats, as do residential and sports complexes, and schools. Along with sweet and nut distribution, the celebrations also include henna applications, puppet shows, face-painting, listening to, and narrating stories! It’s the time of year every child on the block looks forward to. Over the years, the festival has gained even more recognition with several expatriates also joining in on the celebrations as even non-Muslims begin to celebrate the culture and traditions.

Chaand Raat
he last night of Ramadan is always cause for celebration and, as the first day of the month of Shawwal (the month after Ramadan), on the sighting of the first lunar crescent, Ramadan can either be 29 or 30 days. Making the actual day for Eid a mystery until the night before, creates an uproar of excitement and enthusiasm around the Muslim world. Some might say, it brings more excitement than Eid-al-Fitr itself, as the streets of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India come alive with festivity. As soon as the moon for Eid is sighted, the women of South Asia rush to the markets for Chaand Raat. Chaand means moon, and Raat translates to night, so the name literally means the ‘night of the moon’. After the final iftar of Ramadan is completed and the moon for the commencement of Eid is sighted, droves of women and girls flock to the local bazaars to celebrate this auspicious night. In light of this tradition of Chaand Raat, most shopkeepers remain open late into the night, catering to the influx of lastminute shoppers. Now, the big malls and shopping centres also indulge in this tradition, but the true fun lies within the old alleys and streets of the cities. Some of the most important and vital shops being those selling bangles and henna. These bazaars are instantly adorned with makeshift stalls dripping with bangles of all designs, sizes, and colours along the sides of narrow streets. Women gather around these stands and try on various
assortments for the next day. You can easily lose your voice amongst the laughter and bargaining that occurs. The henna stands also attract large queues of women and children alike. Intricate and elaborate designs are created on hands, feet and arms, instilling even more excitement for the next day. The henna application remains a time-honoured Ramadan tradition in South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh to date. The local bazaars are sparkling with the excitement for Eid, whilst uplifting the community spirit. Speaking with Mashaal Gohar, a local from Lahore, Pakistan, she recounts this as being her favourite time of the year. “There is so much life and commotion on the streets that it just instils the spirit of the occasion within you. My family and I go every year to this little local alley, that only allows one-way traffic, and we stand on the edges waiting in line for henna.” And while the tradition originated in the subcontinent, the most well-known Chaand Raat festivities also take place oceans away. The subcontinent’s population living in countries such as the USA and Australia have taken this tradition overseas, and share it with their local communities, setting up fairs and festivals to commemorate the occasion. “Chaand Raat is one of the few occasions where all the desi community comes together for a night of food and fun. It’s also a great way to show my kids our traditions while living in America,” says Sugam Riaz, a mother of two living in Virginia, USA. 30

all colours and sizes and this little trip became our yearly tradition. It’s a way for parents to get their kids excited about Ramadan, and when we were buying things to prepare for the month, buying a fanous was number one priority,” says Nadine Abulnasr, an Egyptian national, as she narrates her experience in Egypt as a child. “All the kids in my family would have their own lanterns that we would light up throughout the month,” she adds. Buying Ramadan lanterns is a source of joy for children and adults alike; the large lanterns are hung throughout the city; in the streets decorating cafes, storefronts, and homes. These lanterns are dangled from windows and balconies, on ropes across alleyways, emitting a magical atmosphere as the city glows in a beautiful sea of light and colours. It’s nearly impossible to find a street devoid of this magic during Ramadan. One of the most joyful traditions, that we see less of now, was children swinging their lanterns as they walked down crowded streets, going from door to door singing ‘wahawi ya wahawi’ while asking for gifts and candy. Even though this tradition has nearly disappeared, the magic of the lantern remains. This intricate custom has thoroughly spread throughout the Arab countries, with no intrinsic link to religion. The fanous, has become a universal symbol for Ramadan with its intricate designs, and dancing rays of colourful lights. “It doesn’t feel like Ramadan without them,” adds Nadine.

Fanous
amadan is all about starry nights and the crescent moon, and Egypt takes the concept of lighting up the night sky a step further. The country’s people gather together to welcome the Holy Month with colourful fanous — intricate lanterns that symbolise unity and joy throughout. This tradition, although more cultural than religious, is truly the most captivating sight in the country during this month and has become deeply intertwined with Ramadan activities as it also takes on a spiritual significance. There are many stories and much ancient folklore about the origins of the lanterns and the beginning of their use, but a prominent account dates the birth of the fanous to one night during the Fatimid dynasty. The story highlights when locals gathered to greet the Caliphate Al-Mu‘izz li-Din Allah as he arrived in Cairo on the first day of Ramadan. It is said that military officials held candles in dark streets, sheltered with wooden frames against the wind, to create a lit-up pathway. They are also said to have been used as a means of illumination especially when going to mosques at night. Over time these wooden figures have been elevated to become a chaotic array of colours, now displayed across the entire country, spreading light during the Holy Month. “I remember going to the markets with my mum just before Ramadan. Drumming at Dawn
T
he thudding sounds of drumbeats can be heard loud and clear in Ramadan on the streets of Turkey. Ever since the days of the Ottoman Empire, those fasting during Ramadan have woken up to the sound of a drum beating early in the morning for suhoor, and that tradition has been kept alive and pounding to this day. Despite technology gracing us with alarm clocks in our phones, more than 2,000 drummers still roam the streets of many areas in Turkey, awakening the community to take suhoor before commencing their fast for the day. These drummers dress in traditional Ottoman attire, including a fez and vest adorned with traditional motifs, paying homage to their lineage and culture. The morning risers make their rounds on the streets with their double-headed drums known as davul, beating in unison, and sometimes vocalising a song or poem. “This drumming tradition has been an integral part of our Ramadan experiences back in Turkey,” says Ece Omayma Yigit, “It’s like a communal alarm, that gives us a magical sense of togetherness, knowing that all our neighbours in the community are partaking in the same religious customs as we are.” There are also tales and accounts of these drummers relying on the kindness and generosity of the street residents to give them tips (bahşiş) or even invite them in to share their suhoor meal. These acts strengthen communities to this day, as they embark on this centuries-old tradition. And to keep this tradition alive, the Turkish government has also implemented a membership card for drummers in order to instil a sense of tradition in those who play and encourage the younger generation to take part. 32
fact magazine
This has restored a sense of pride to the age-old custom and helped expand the network of drummers. This drumming is also found in some Gulf countries and South Asia, where the drummers are known as the 'Mesaharaty' or pre-dawn caller. This community exists in different variants, through callers, drummers, canon firers, whistlers, etc., all with the mission to awaken people for suhoor. Out of all the Ramadan customs in Turkey, this one stands out for kindness and rejoicing in the spirit of Ramadan.

Pandusan
leanliness is an indispensable fundamental of faith in Islam, both physically and spiritually. We cleanse our minds and bodies before and during prayer five times a day, and many Muslims around the world take this purification further when practising special occasions. One great example is the people of Indonesia at the beginning of Ramadan. Padusan (meaning ‘to bathe’ in Javanese dialect) is a deeply embedded purifying tradition in which Indonesian Muslims cleanse themselves just before the Holy Month of Ramadan begins. This bathing ritual is intended to purify the body and soul before starting the fast. Traditionally Muslims from the country gather in springs of natural pools, and lakes in their vicinity. Several groups in central and east Java soak their bodies from head to toe, releasing all dirt and toxins to the earth. The act of pandusan is a combination of tradition and culture, blending to create lasting customs for the country. Springs already hold a profound divine connotation in Javanese culture and thus, are an integral part of ablution for the Holy Month. The act is said to have come about by a practice spread by Wali Songo, a group of well-regarded priests who were the first missionaries to transfer Islamic teachings throughout Java. The tradition was always observed one day before Ramadan in the pools at mosques or in the spring wells designated by the palace, but now people may cleanse themselves in the comfort of their homes as they prepare for Ramadan.
Nyekar
he practice of religion in Indonesia is usually mixed with old traditions, cultivating unique practices and rituals for the citizens. Such is the pre-Ramadan tradition of nyekar. This word comes from the root word sekar, which means flowers, and the verb nyekar meaning to spread flower petals (on a burial ground). This is an act of paying respect to the departed members of the family. According to early Javanese beliefs, the month of Ramadan marks the start of a new life cycle and the completion of the previous one, therefore you must give your respects to the lives that are no longer with us. People get together to pray at, clean and visit graves usually a week before Ramadan begins. It is customary to decorate the graves with pleasant smelling flowers and is deemed disrespectful if non-fragrant flowers are used. Although there is no hard rule against them, as we learn from Putri Hapsari. She says: “Some people think non-fragrant ‘wild’ flowers are worthless and using worthless flowers is disrespectful to the dead. However, for those who cannot afford anything else, wildflowers are better than none.” This small tradition is just another way families gather to pay tribute to their loved ones once a year, it’s a moment of joy when they come together to talk about the departed and offer stories of their lives. This beautiful tradition allows families to move on to the next chapter in their lives.

Games of Mheibes
W
e love how Ramadan has the power to bring people together. Even though we abstain from worldly affairs and practice self-restraint, this somehow brings the Muslim community closer than at any other time of the year. We thrive on our connection with our religion and culture through food, prayers and, in Iraq, it includes a game of mheibes. This game is also known as the game of the ring. Although simple in terms of its rules and methods, it brings about quite an uproar from the crowds playing it. It is traditionally played early in the night, just after the breaking of fast, between two groups of 40 to 250 men, who all take turns to conceal a mihbes, or a ring. Yes, that’s a lot of people, but that’s what the magic of Ramadan does, it brings people together. This game of deception begins with one team leader clasping the ring in his hand under a cloth and hovering over the hands of his team members. The other members sit straight without any facial or body movements, as the leader carefully and swiftly places the ring in one of their hands in secret under the cloth. To win the game, the opposing team needs to guess which person the ring falls with, out of the dozens of men, through body language alone. A simple game of deceit, yet so enthralling that it has been passed down for generations. And though the exact roots of the game are unknown, it has profound cultural and historical value. So much so that decades ago the Iraqi government itself would organise community-wide games, hosting large groups of

people from across the country. Although this state-sponsored practice was halted during the unrest in the country, mheibes has made a return in recent years, as individual community members continue to pass forward the tradition and reminiscence of the good old days. Such game nights are also custom to many other countries celebrating Ramadan around the world. As families gather to break their fasts, they indulge in some family-friendly fun. Such an example is the game of Ludo in South Asia, a board game played between four people in hopes to get their pawns home on the board before their opponents. Another such pastime that’s apparent in most households in Ramadan in the Gulf, as well as South Asia, is Carrom, another game for all ages. It’s interesting to see how even the youth are attracted to such old games, and how this month helps revive old traditions that are otherwise lost during the rest of the year. ✤

una Al-Bader is a well-established Qatari artist as well as Qatar’s art ambassador. She’s known for her mesmerising works that peek deep into the viewer’s soul, allowing them to feel pain, struggles and love as portrayed by her pieces. Her distinct style delivers a universal visual message that can be read by different cultures and nations — connecting people and building civilizations as artists have done in the past. We sit down with Muna to talk about her journey and the success she has accumulated along the way. What inspires your art? The artist is the son of his environment, and I have been inspired by everything around me. I am inspired by the blue of the sky and the clearness of the sea. Blue, the colour of our world. It’s everywhere, from nowhere. This colour has always connected to human emotions. Happiness and sadness and that’s what I have been reflecting in my paintings recently. Is there a particular reason or inspiration behind choosing the colour blue as your statement? During the past few years, I have been exploring the power of blue. It’s the colour of the sky and of our world; beautiful and noble. I use blue as an ode to the role it played in journeys on pearl diving expeditions. For our forefathers, blue was more than a colour, it was a song; a song of life, a song of joy and success. fact magazine

• ARTS & CULTURE How did you know this was the path you were meant to be on? Was the transition from studying information, communications, and business hard? I fell in love with the world of computers and technology in my childhood, and I also loved art from my childhood. After I graduated high school, I lived in a frank relationship between passion and self-realisation through knowledge and what the career market requires. So, I chose to start the university stage, but at the same time I began to join arts centres to develop my artistic talent. We’ve noticed that many of your recent paintings and sculptures, encompass an abstract approach whilst remaining true to the figure represented. What made you go towards this method? My recent works summarise the memories of the people and sailors of the sea in the past. I want to bring back those memories and that cherished history. In the 1930s, our tired sailors unleashed musical beats on the wooden floor of the boats during their pearl diving journeys, these performances transported them to a different realm, forgetting their everyday existence. This is the story behind my art. What’s something that is essential to your creative process? One of the most important things that I must do before starting to draw is to prepare the right place and the right song. Music is the food of hearing and mind, and with it I enter my own world. Through this music I am transported, sailing in my own blue world, which allows me to hone my spiritual and visual strengths to create new concepts. How has your work evolved over time; do you see a significant change in the way you portray your elements? My work has changed dramatically over the past 10 years. My works are now noisy, with bright colours that please the audience,
while the violent brush movement reflects feelings of joy and sadness. I like to think that I can now connect humanity to my art. We’ve seen your murals flourish around the city of Doha, what do you hope bystanders experience when they see your work on the streets? My graffiti aims to convey clear messages to the wider audience. For example, my graffiti artwork at Katara Cultural Village shows the heritage of Qatar through illustrating the sailors during their pearl diving journeys and how their tiredness at sea is the foundation of what our country is today. Where do you hope your art will take you in the future? My art has already travelled far over the last few years, such as Europe and North Africa, and I wish to see it travel even wider, in effect to place Qatari art on the cultural map of the world. 38

fter a year of staying indoors, FACT’s Chirine Halabi ventures out to an uber-luxe private island resort – OZEN RESERVE BOLIFUSHI, situated in a pristine lagoon in South Malé Atoll – for some much-needed travel bliss. When you think of the Maldives, you think of vast white-sand beaches, the deepest of blue hues in the ocean and sky, and this resort encompasses all that and more, making it a repeat tropical travel destination in our books. We arrive bright and early to the island around 9am and are escorted to a private air-conditioned THE OZEN COLLECTION LOUNGE, before our luxurious catamaran ride to our final destination. The lounge provides us with the start we need for our mini holiday, along with a serene and ambient environment. All guests are greeted with a palm leaf garland on arrival and refreshing face towels, along with a variety of drinks and delectable bites and sweets. Staff thoroughly ensure that we receive the full pampering experience from day one. Upon finally arriving at the port, we step onto a shaded boardwalk where we are heartily greeted by the resort’s general and marketing managers. We are welcomed in the traditional Maldivian way, with the blowing of a conch shell, rhythmic ‘Bodu Beru’ drumming and Sangu whistling. After a few pleasantries and with Kurumba (fresh coconuts) in hand, we are escorted to our sanctuary.
Ocean Stays We arrive at the Ocean Pool Suite and are engulfed in a beautiful room, emitting vibrant hues of blue across the balcony and subtle oaky wood inside, with pops of vibrant colours. This overwater villa also hosts a sunken indoor bath, rain shower, and over-water hammock, to fully bask in those rays of holiday sun, panoramic views of the vast open sea, and direct private access to the lagoon for a quick swim. For days when a dip in the ocean feels a bit too adventurous, we indulge in our private infinity pool. Luxury at this resort knows no bounds. We decide to stay in, relax and unwind after our travels and prepare to explore the island the next morning. This experience becomes even more serene with our personal Hiyani. In Dhivehi, the Maldivian language, Hiyani means shadow. The moment you arrive at Bolifushi island, you’ll have a personal Hiyani, or butler, who’s available 24/7 to ensure the perfect experience throughout your stay. Your Hiyani will do whatever it takes to give you a hassle-free vacation. From filling out forms to fetching forgotten objects from the room and making dinner reservations, no request is too much for these passionate butlers. We are lucky enough to be introduced to Yoosuf as our Hiyani, who goes above and beyond to make our stay memorable without us ever having to lift a finger. Definitely a professional when it comes to his job, and a highlight for our entire trip. We cannot stop raving about the comfort that Yoosuf brings, and we're sure that all the Hiyani's are trained with the same qualifications, ensuring every visitor has a blissful time. Waking up in our over-water villa is like waking up in a dream, we can just faintly hear the waves break against the wooden beams as the sun shines ever-so brightly telling our natural body alarm that it’s the beginning of a brand new, and beautiful day. We start our morning with not just a breakfast in bed, but rather a floating 42

More Than a Swim Don’t let the subtitle confuse you, we definitely indulge in a lot of swimming during our stay, but that is a fraction of the activities and facilities that are offered at the OZEN RESERVE BOLIFUSHI. Adventure, fitness and well-being activities include an openair ice rink; private yacht charters; a state-of-the-art overwater gymnasium; semi-submarine adventures; water sports and complimentary bicycles. The island is home to its own idyllic overwater spa; a space for mind and body renewal and rejuvenation where we pamper our senses with the signature treatments, techniques, and yoga sessions amidst the soothing sounds of waves breaking on the shore. If you’re more of an active body, then you may also take a trip to the gym, but we love exploring the island via bicycle. ince Porsche’s inception in 1931, this globally admired, premium brand has continuously managed to set itself apart from almost all other car manufacturers. Whether it be the superior technology and performance capabilities or the steadfast dedication to always providing the most luxurious and stylish vehicle possible, Porsche has assured continued admiration for its label with every new model produced. We at FACT Magazine are huge fans of the brand and relish the chance to get behind the wheel of any Porsche we can get our hands-on. This month, thanks to the great team at Porsche Centre Doha, we had the opportunity to test drive the new Porsche Taycan 4S. The 2021 Taycan 4S retains the unmistakable Porsche DNA through its exterior design which we found to be instantly impressive to the eye. Staring at the vehicle head-on, it appears particularly wide and flat with highly contoured wings. From the viewpoint of the flanks, the sporty roofline slopes downward to the back end, whilst significantly sculptured side sections add to the car’s striking appearance. The shoulders of the wings are distinctive and, along with the drawn-in rear C-pillar, they work together to create a sharply emphasised rear. Features of the Taycan 4S that set it apart from other models in the range include aerodynamically optimised 19-inch Taycan S Aero wheels, red brake calipers, the front apron with new geometry as well as side sills and rear diffuser in black. Equipped as standard are the LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus. The glass-effect Porsche logo integrated into the light bar at the rear finishes off the exterior design with a flourish. Slipping inside the cockpit of the 4S, we immediately felt like we’d entered a premium environment. The partial-leather interior of the new Taycan is exquisite, with all trimmings, materials, and finishes being of the highest quality. Porsche is also offering a leather-free interior for the very first time, replacing it with innovative recycled materials that add to the sustainable concept of the electric sports car. A free-standing, curved instrument cluster is present on the dashboard, placing a clear focus on the driver axis. The infotainment display measures 10.9-inches and along with an optional passenger display, combines to form an integrated glass band in a black-panel look. With ample space on offer in the front and a comfortable seating arrangement for two adults in the back, this four-door vehicle is not only beautiful but functional as well. Performance-wise, just because the Taycan is an electric sports car, does not mean that it delivers less power than one has come to expect from a Porsche. On the contrary, the Taycan 4S comes equipped with the Performance battery as standard that produces 530hp (390kW). However, a second option is available in the form of the Performance battery Plus that delivers 571hp (420kW). Both options allow the 4S to surge from zero-100km/h in four seconds flat and provide a regulated top speed of 250km/h. Perhaps the best feature of this vehicle is that despite all of this power being produced, it releases a combined CO2 emission of 0g/km. Great news for the environment. Along with the breathtaking acceleration and abundance of raw power, the Taycan 4S comes equipped with two synchronous machines on the front and back axles making this model an all-
wheel drive. Porsche has included a centrally networked control system for the car’s chassis that analyses and synchronises all chassis systems in real-time. Complete with adaptive air suspension featuring three-chamber technology, this beast of a machine provides one smooth ride. With a fantastic braking system and exceptional cornering abilities, we found the Taycan 4S an extremely enjoyable car to drive and we received plenty of attention from all those around us as we made our way along the roads. It is also comforting to note that Porsche has included an array of safety features to ensure you and your loved ones are protected throughout the driving experience. ✤ fact magazine

In Conversation with… Elias J. Moukarzel With the excitement of Ramadan engulfing the city, we sit down for a five-minute chat with the man behind the iconic Hilton Doha. Elias J. Moukarzel gives us the lowdown on the exciting things to look forward to this month. The pandemic is still dominating all our minds, what can you tell us about the precautions your team is taking and how you have handled this situation this past year? Navigating the past year has been challenging for everyone. At Hilton Doha, our main priority has always been the safety of our guests, colleagues, and partners; hence the development of the Hilton Clean Stay initiative. Building on our already rigorous cleaning standards, Hilton collaborated with Reckitt, the producer of health and hygiene brands Lysol and Dettol, to ensure immaculate measures of cleanliness and disinfection within our properties. Across our food and beverage outlets, we are constantly adapting to follow the measures in place to ensure the safety of our guests. The Qatar Clean Program launched by the Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC) and Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) became the drive behind maintaining safety protocols at the highest standards. The Hilton Doha has become a renowned destination, what’s the secret to its success? At Hilton Doha, we encompass all aspects of entertainment that a five-star hotel should deliver. Our property features immaculate suites with floor-to-ceiling views of the Arabian Gulf, a beautiful private beach, pool facilities, and a tranquil spa, coupled with vibrant recreational activities. Combined with our warm and friendly team, we ensure your stay is as pleasurable as can be. We also deliver an extensive range of food and beverage outlets, constantly evolving to cater to every interest of our guests with varied cuisines and ambiance. 2020 saw the launch of two new food and beverage outlets at Hilton Doha, the contemporary sushi bar, Sushi On! featuring modern Japanese cuisine, as well as the Bab Al Bahr seaside lounge, a trendy, sunset beachside retreat, offering Mediterranean tapas, Oriental shawarma, and unique signature cocktails. We also have Polynesian restaurant and bar Trader Vic’s and Tahitian Village, infamous destinations for fusion cuisine, enhanced drinks, and everyone’s favourite brunch locations. Sports fans can enjoy a brew while watching a game on our extensive screens at Shots, or chill with friends on the outdoor terrace. Those looking for a more energetic experience have the 56

option of our on-site, award-winning nightclub Society Lounge, which sees global A-list artists and performances. We are eagerly awaiting nightlife to return to host some great new surprises. Ramadan is always a grand occasion in Qatar, how do you think you’re owning this celebratory month? This year we are owning Ramadan with offerings across our outlets. Ramadan is right here at Hilton Doha with a beachside iftar and suhoor at Bab Al Bahr, offering Ramadan like never before with an immersive dining experience by the ocean. Enjoy traditional Arabic dishes as well as modern Mediterranean tapas, and delightful pairing mocktails. Those looking for an alternative iftar experience can also enjoy a sharing-style menu from Sushi On! offering modern Japanese cuisine with specially prepared Ramadan pairing sips. Complete your Ramadan celebrations and find a place to rest your head in our beautiful suites, and wake up to the floor-toceiling views with our room package options. Bab Al Bahr Doha is a favourite for al fresco and seaside dining, what can we expect there during Ramadan? There is nothing quite like being situated on the beach at sunset, with the sound of the ocean, surrounded by loved ones, and a feast of delectable cuisine. This Ramadan, we make it a special occasion where one can relax with friends and family, while enjoying an extensive iftar under the stars. We have beautiful lounge set ups, where your feet can touch
the sand, lit by candlelight lanterns for a truly extraordinary experience. Our culinary team has developed an extravagant seated menu of delicacies, from cold mezze to warm signatures and traditional mains; finished with a range of tempting authentic sweets and refreshing mocktails. You’ve held positions at various Hilton properties in Jordan, as well as Egypt. What’s unique about your experience in Qatar? I am happy I was granted the chance to travel with Hilton and discover different countries, cultures, and experiences. I joined Hilton Doha two years ago and have been enjoying the journey both on a personal and professional level. Doha and Qatar are at the epicentre of the hospitality industry in the Middle East, driven by the many events to come and following Qatar’s National Vision 2030. In my time here, I have seen the city expand and develop at a rapid pace, it is a constant motivation to ensure you deliver your best every day, and consistently convey excellence in everything you do. I am eager to see the progression towards the World Cup 2022, and everything that we at Hilton Doha can offer during this exciting time. We are all working to ensure that this is the most memorable World Cup ever experienced. I am proud to lead a genuinely passionate team of professionals here at Hilton Doha. We are constantly working toward elevating the offering from our property, and with the support of Hilton and our owners, I am very excited to see what more we can offer in the coming years. ✤ fact magazine

Why Is It Worth Watching?
The upcoming military thriller starring Michael B. Jordan as John Kelly (known as Clark in the late author Tom Clancy’s books) gives the origin story of Clancy’s most famous character, aside from Jack Ryan. An elite Navy SEAL uncovers an international conspiracy while seeking justice for the murder of his pregnant wife by a squad of Russian soldiers wreaking vengeance for his role in a top-secret operation. Kelly/Clark joins forces with a fellow SEAL (Jodie Turner-Smith) and a CIA agent (Jamie Bell) to pursue the assassins but their mission unwittingly exposes a covert plot that threatens to engulf the U.S. and Russia in an all-out war. Torn between personal honour and loyalty to his country, Kelly must do battle to avert disaster and reveal the powerful figures behind the conspiracy. Early reviews for this high-action thriller have been promising but, be warned, if you have read the books and are a Clancy fan, you may find this way off the mark from the original.

Why Is It Worth Watching?
No spoilers on Season 1, if you haven’t watched it yet, you really should. This outing brings Harriet Dunkley (Torv) back to Canberra, the seat of Australia’s, seemingly rather staid, central government. Torn between staying and heading out for a new life, she is recruited as a media specialist (someone whose job is to keep the media in the dark as much as possible and spin what can’t be hidden) to independent MP Karen Koutoufides (Cormack). When what appears to be an internal terror attack is shown to be anything but, Dunkley uses her investigative skills to discover the truth. But, can she unearth the one piece of crucial evidence to stop her country entering an unjust war? A fast-paced exposé of dirty deals and even dirtier politics in which one minister is murdered and another shows surprisingly principled behaviour. You’ll be sorry to reach the end.

Sound Ancestors By Madlib arranged by Four Tet
Color Theory By Soccer Mommy
By Hala Alyan A sentimental story, reminiscent of the region. After a Lebanese American heart surgeon dies, the family's new patriarch, his son Idris, decides to sell the family home in Beirut. His Syrian-born wife and children are concerned that selling the house might be a mistake. Everyone gathers in Beirut to host a memorial and discuss the planned sale. Secrets, jealousy, past loves and abandoned passions start to emerge. In a city smouldering with the legacy of war, an ongoing flow of refugees, religious tension, and political protest, those secrets ignite. Throughout the novel, they gradually emerge in vivid recollections of the life of Idris’ wife before she married. A gripping family rendition of how we hold on to the memories, places and people we call home.

In the spirit of Ramadan, here is a mini offering for adults to read both for themselves and to their children. A beautiful, inspirational book that carries a message for us all. In 138AD, Hadrian, the emperor of Rome, chose Marcus Aurelius to succeed him. The greatest philosophers of that time were summoned and tasked to prepare the young boy for his role. They collectively sculpted him into a great leader. We all have an inner voice and a unique calling. Will we answer? Will we step up? Will we achieve greatness within ourselves? A pocket of wisdom that you can gift to your family and friends with children.

Qibla Compass (Kaaba Locator)
Sleep Time
We’re in full Ramadan mode this month and know the common struggle of looking around for the right direction to pray. Especially when you’re out and about in different places with vastly different time zones and you need to figure out the correct Qibla direction, this app will come in handy! The app is simple, hassle free and direct to the point (pun intended). All you have to do is open the app and follow the needle of the compass which uses your current location with the help of a GPS map to find the accurate Qibla direction. We’re sure this will be a fan favourite this month as we attend iftaars and suhoors – socially distant of course. So, no need to fret as you stand awkwardly in a family friend’s room, you’ll know which way to pray with the app pointing you in the right direction.
Sleep tracking apps like Azumio’s Sleep Time make it easier to wake up for suhoor (predawn), if you’re not a naturally early riser. And, to be honest, most of us aren’t. These early meals can take a toll on a person’s body, especially if you’re woken up by your alarm in your deepest sleep state. This is where Sleep Time comes in. The app keep tabs on whether users are getting their nightly downtime while also measuring the quality of their sleep by tracking their movement throughout the night. It also generates customised sleep data in easyto-read charts, so you can keep track as well, and all you need to do is turn the app on and place it on the bed. Based on these charts, the app analyses your sleeping patterns to pinpoint when you’re in a light sleep phase. You can also use the smart alarm to wake you up in this phase, so you’ll feel refreshed rather than tired.

• DINING DELIGHT
T
here are only a couple of foods that many of us have a craving for in Doha and, for us at FACT, it’s usually sushi. To satisfy this desire we take a trip to a corner of The Pearl-Qatar at MEGU. MEGU stands for 'blessing' in Japanese and the brand has come a long way since the launch of its initial restaurant in New York City more than 10 years ago, as this branch sitting in an idyllic spot by the Doha seaside today shows. We receive the full luxury experience as we ride up to the venue in a private elevator which leads to the restaurant’s lobby and stunning long bar table. The main seating area opens up after another small pathway which leads into a large circular dining room with high ceilings, customary Japanese interior accents, and expansive full-length windows that overlook an equally stunning elongated balcony — perfect to complement the modern Japanese cuisines offered. Usually, we opt for the full al fresco experience but, this time, decide to sit indoors to avoid the unexpectedly harsh rays from the afternoon sun. The menu is long and extensive, featuring everything from soups and salads to sushi, ramen, and more. Going over the options, we’re left in a fluster at what to order. After much deliberation, we indulge in the MEGU kanzuri shrimp and the Angus beef croquette. The shrimp is battered and coated with a special blend of kanzuri creamy sauce which radiates aromas a mile away. The crunchy batter cuts into soft perfectly cooked shrimp releasing an audible ‘yum’ from 68

more than one at the table. The beef croquette comprises lightly spiced, ground Angus beef rolled and flash-fried in breadcrumbs served on a bed of tonkatsu sauce and lemon garnish. The ideal appetiser for meat-lovers. When most people speak of sushi, they are referring to maki sushi or sashimi, but the MEGU menu has so much more to explore with four different categories for these alone. We order an assortment of the crafted-to-perfection sushi options, and they arrive strategically placed on a large wooden board, perfect for two to share, with the Blazing Roll, Ebi Dynamite, Crispy Unagi Roll and Salmon Ebi Roll within easy reach. Each piece oozes fresh ocean flavours, refreshing our taste buds and cleaning our palates. And although choosing a favourite is difficult, we highly recommend the Crispy Unagi. From the mains, we cut into the steaming Ume Wagyu steak. A Wagyu beef steak served on a sizzling hot river stone with the accompaniment of kimchi cucumber salad, steamed white rice and kagerou sauce for dipping. When a chef invests in a good quality cut of beef, the best way to cook it is to respect it and keep it simple, and this dish proves simple doesn’t need to be flavourless. We couldn’t leave without trying the infamous MEGU green tea cheesecake and, to our delight, it did not disappoint. A quaint delectable green cheesecake with a berry on top. The cheese filling, though a little dense, is engulfed in the flavours of the green tea. This restaurant hosts a delightful atmosphere, eye-catching décor, delicious food, and amazing service. URBAN CAMPING The Diplomatic Club is taking the hassle and long drives out of the camping experience, by introducing its own seaside Urban Camp.

O
ne of the great things about living in Qatar is the constant access to scenic desert plains and a multitude of beaches. However, to have a great experience you need to be prepared with 4x4 vehicles, portable grills, coals, charcoal, food, and much more. We don’t know about you, but we reckon the preparation alone can exhaust anyone who’s not an avid camper. So, instead of heading (far) out for some adventure, we take a detour to a luxurious camping experience, that gives us all the play without any of the work. The Diplomatic Club is an intimate, serene waterfront venue in the heart of West Bay, and it brings residents of Doha an Urban Camp experience right on its own shores. The camp allows guests to indulge in authentic Oriental cuisine and ambience, which tastefully combines quality and extravagance, infused with a rustic Middle Eastern charm that will leave you wanting more. Fun fact, the club used to be an actual palace back in the day, so you really get a full Qatari experience. The experience is set up on the club's beachfront, with large private tents adorned in majlis style furniture, complete with a set of amenities and fire pit — what more do you need for a fine-dining camping experience within the city? Leaving behind the hassle of setting up a camp, fixing a fire, preparing for barbecues and, at last, dining. The camp provides a selection of fresh meats and a rich, and distinctive menu to make the experience unforgettable. Guests can unwind and enjoy the scenic views while grilling their meals on charcoal, or just leave it to the service staff to handle it. We start our meal with a refreshing Rocca Menthe, an authentic

Qatari drink, and something none of us have ever had before. Needless to say, we go through two jugs of this delightful beverage. Following that refreshing taste comes a traditional Arabic coffee dallah, giving us just the kick of appetite we need for what’s to come. For the appetisers we are brought a selection of cold and hot mezze, comprising of the smoothest hommous, a creamy moutabbal, a simple rocca salad, sweet mohammara, tantalising vine leaves, the perfectly spiced potato harra, and a warm and flavourful mix of fatayyer on a large traditional silver platter. We indulge in it all and have some seconds from the fatayyer platter as well. While we clean out the appetisers, our mains are being grilled right in front of us by the chefs. Guests also have the option to grill the food themselves for an even more authentic camping experience. The mains consist of the juiciest meat we have had, so much so, that the flatbread underneath is drenched in an aromatic and salty essence. The trays arrive bearing kabab, kofta, taouk, lamb chops, and grilled potato, onion, and tomato. There is no exaggeration when we say that literally every single piece of meat has us going back for more. We end our meal with a pistachio-filled, creamy, and warm bowl of Um Ali. There’s just something about a warm dessert after a hearty meal that brings comfort to the body. The Urban Camps come with traditional seating accommodating up to eight guests and are available daily from noon to midnight. Priced at QR750 for four hours, the experience includes a
welcome drink, Arabic coffee dallah or a suleimani teapot, local mineral water, deluxe dates, a generous fruit basket, and a firepit. Further food can be added for a minimum of two people to complete the experience, priced at QR235 per person for the meat and chicken option, and QR280 per person for added shrimps. This unique dining experience by the seaside is great for any day for suhoor or iftar this Ramadan, or an evening out with friends and family. ✤

A REAL TASTE OF ITALY
Craig Ferriman took a Mediterranean journey to sample a new theme night. fact magazine

T
he Westin Doha’s international dining restaurant, Seasonal Tastes, always ensures a warm and welcoming atmosphere and that was exactly what we found on our recent visit to check out the new Thursday theme night that aims to kick off the weekend with a flavour-filled evening. The Italian chef Massimiliano played to his strengths, cooking up a storm for this Italian-themed feast that transported us to his homeland on the east coast of the old country. A plethora of fresh salads, such as the standout classic caprese, proved a great starting point with green leaves and crunchy vegetables in abundance. In the interests of research (of course) we tried a little of each and all were superbly fresh, tangy and healthy too! The live pasta station was especially exciting as we selected the type of pasta we preferred (penne in my case) and the sauces and supplements to accompany it, then watched our dishes being prepared in front of us, at lightning speed. I went for a creamy carbonara with beef bacon and basil added plus plenty of Parmesan sprinkled over. The pasta was the perfect al dente texture and the sauce was well blended with the cheese adding a sharp twist to the comforting creaminess. There were three pizzas to choose from, allowing us to mix and match our slices rather than only choosing one. This is a great idea if you want a piece of pie but also want to save space for a main course. The cheese pizza was probably my 76

favourite but the Margherita and pepperoni were also good, their crispy crusts hitting the exact spot to complement the plentiful toppings. There was a wide variety of main courses to choose from too, such as a hearty lamb stew, chicken in spices and a fabulous seafood stew – one of the chef’s specials. So, certainly no shortage of either choice or inspiration. Though more than sated, a plentiful array of beautifully presented, bite-sized Italian desserts was on full display behind glass in the buffet counter, and we simply could not resist. The tiramisu hit the right note. It was in such a tiny pot that I took the liberty of having another – you see, the old saying is true, there really is always room for dessert. There is a choice of both indoor and outdoor seating at the restaurant. We observed that there was a family-friendly feel to the place with children comfortably able to roam around and parents taking the chance to find an unstuffy and relaxed place to spend quality family time. And, with an incredible array of dishes on offer, the price of QR169 was great value for money making the start to the weekend affordable as well as fun and satisfying. ✤

he InterContinental Doha is home to some of our favourite dining destinations, so imagine our excitement as we enter Coral to try out the new Ramadan menu. We’ve visited on multiple occasions before, and Coral never fails to delight with its flavourful dishes and bright ambience. But this time, the restaurant is taking on a new role as the place to be this Ramadan, with a new menu and a traditionally decked-out dining area for the month’s celebrations. Upon arrival, we choose seats outdoors at the terrace overlooking the pool, to take in the fresh ocean breezes, which make it the ideal al fresco experience. The usual wooden table and casual chairs have been adorned in drapes and tablecloths, giving the restaurant a touch of Ramadan, and we’re assured that the entirety of the venue will be unrecognisable as the hotel aims to make this feast really special. Coral will be hosting guests for both suhoor and iftar, from 9pm till midnight at QR140 per person and sunset until 8pm at QR220 per person, respectively from the first day of Ramadan. The iftar set menu consists of more food than you can eat in one go, making it the ideal place to break your fast and fill up on Arabic delicacies. Before devouring a feast fit for royalty, guests receive a small selection of dates, dried prunes, apricots, and almonds to break their fast with the Adhan.

And as the minutes go by the restaurant also serves a variety of refreshing Ramadan drinks to help nourish and rehydrate the body: jellab, amar al din, laban, and orange juice. Jellab is a popular Middle Eastern drink made from carob, dates, grape molasses, and rose water — ensuring a mouthful of cold, sweet freshness; while amar al din is a drink focused on punchy apricot flavours, and a Ramadan favourite around the nation. We opt for the orange juice, but in hindsight realise that we should have tried them all, as all sound equally revitalising. Now for the feast. This Ramadan menu will not only give guests good value for money on flavours, but also on options. Within minutes our table is adorned with more cold mezze than we can imagine along with a warm bread basket with some Arabic bread and kubus, with hummus, moutabal, baba ganoush, tabouleh, fattoush, vine leaves, muhamara, and labneh with cucumber filling up each corner. Told you it was a mouthful in all the senses of the phrase. Just when we think we’ve loaded up all the mezze available, out come the warm aromas of the hot mezze, comprising of kibbeh, meat sambousek, spinach fattayer, cheese spring roll, beef makanek, potato harra, and chicken wings Provençale. These plates give us the definition of comfort food, enveloping us in a warm embrace of flavours and warmth. And to further tighten this hug all guests receive a choice between the traditional lentil soup or the soup of the day. Please note, that we haven’t even gotten to the mains yet and are already falling into a food-induced coma.
The main courses arrive with an Oriental mixed grill comprising of tender and juicy lamb kofta, chicken shish tawook, and beef kebabs dripping with meaty juices, with sides of garlic sauce, spicy chilli, grilled vegetables, and potato wedges. Then we have the aromatic and flavourful Hammour Sayadieh, with tahina sauce and roast pine nuts, a tender and slow-roasted lamb leg, and the ever-favourite bowl of biryani with vibrant colours, and those addictive curry flavours. Wait, it’s not over, we still have the sweet stuff to come. And just as we think we cannot manage another bite of the deliciousness, we quickly change our minds with the arrival of the dessert plates. The waiter brings out a freshly sliced fruit platter, a soft kallaj, a crunchy and caramelised qatayef, assorted Oriental sweets, a warm bowl of oum ali topped with chopped pistachios, and rice pudding. We doubt you’ll be headed for any suhoor after this. The InterContinental Ramadan feast at Coral has something for everyone with its delightful set menu. Every item from the appetisers to the desserts is full of flavour set in a traditional and celebratory atmosphere, as we know that Ramadan is the best time to feast in Doha. And this menu delivers. ✤

The restaurant is deeply embedded in the history of the Radisson Blu Hotel and has become a vital element for the identity of the building. These connections and history of commitment truly showcase themselves in the food, ambience, and experience. As you make your way to the restaurant, the aromas of the north Indian menu items waft to the entrance engulfing your senses as you step inside. replacing the small stage that used to grace our ears with live traditional music pre-pandemic. Instead, the melodies played throughout the space are of infamous ghazals (traditional music) that take us back to the Mughal era of India. The walls are adorned with historic paintings, antique swords, and jewellery, to take diners to an ancient Indian palace. We begin our journey to north India with some crunchy and spiced papadum and an assortment of chutneys while we browse the menu. Each papadum gives us a crack that any ASMR video would deem satisfying, while the accompanying chutneys add sweet, spicy, and fresh flavours — the perfect way to begin the meal. For our mains, we bite into the Masala Lamb Chops, Chef Jograj’s Selection platter, and the Biryani Jhinga. The thick, tender lamb chops are slathered in spices and ooze goodness in every bite, having us cleaning up the bones before we dive onto the next delectable and juicy platter. It comes with a delightful array of tandoori kebabs, consisting of chicken, lamb, fish tikka, and spiced prawns. We pair this selection with the aromatic Dawat Ki Rotiyan, an assortment of the best Indian bread we’ve had in Doha. We also order a bowl of butter chicken gravy to mop up with the rich butter naans that have us engrossed over our table. Another main course that has our mouths salivating is the biryani with prawns. The spicy aromas, the vibrant colours, the fluffy rice, and those addictive curry flavours have us going back for seconds and thirds, the prawns adding that hint of distinct flavour we crave. We end our meals with a sweet cleanse to our palates with a Malai Pista Kulfi. A sweet

SWEET SLICE Whilst looking for desserts to extend our palates and keep our bodies healthy, we ran into the mastermind behind MYLK, Lorena Loriato. fact magazine

• CHEF IN FOCUS
What do you love about being a chef at MYLK: An Alternative Destination? MYLK has a special place in my heart. I feel so grateful about how this beautiful project welcomed me a year ago and how we learned and grew together. You know, we went through a pandemic together! We opened during the most difficult time, and despite all odds and the challenges (and trust me there have been many!) came out as a stronger team. What makes MYLK an alternative to other dessert cafes in Qatar? MYLK is indeed unique. What we offer is a range of ice creams, chocolates, and pastries you cannot find elsewhere in Qatar. Except for the croissants, everything at MYLK is gluten-free, and handmade. And when I say handmade, I mean that even the flours and the Mylks we use are prepared in our cosy little kitchen. Yes, from scratch. And everything is plant-based and free from refined sugar. Because even when it comes to pastry, you can choose an alternative option that will actually do good to you and nurture your body. Your desserts always bring a smile to the faces of your customers, is there anything in particular you’d like them to experience when eating your creations? I wish they’d understand that what they are experiencing when having a bite at MYLK is the genuine taste of the ingredients. Our strawberry gelato may not be pink because we do not add any colouring, but it tastes of strawberry. Sometimes sweet and sometimes a little less sweet because in nature fruit does not always come with the same level of sweetness. It is as simple as that. We give you the real deal of nature’s pastry. Can you tell us about the inspiration for wanting to become a chef? I’m just following the flow of my life. I was in the music industry before, organising live events. My background has nothing to do with food, if not for the fact that I suffered from bad eating disorders. When I understood that in order to deal with the enemy [food] I had to become friends with it, I started to heal. My inspiration lies in the opportunity to nourish others with natural ingredients and inspire them to take care of their body and soul. When are you happiest at work? When the team is happy. Growing up, what was the first dessert you made? Would you believe it if I told you that I never made a dessert growing up? It was something I could never accomplish. Really. I was 100-per-cent useless at that. However, when I approached raw vegan food, it all came naturally, like magic. I just could. 88

How do you come up with such stunning and tasty creations? What’s the thought process? The key is in the ingredients and in your imagination. First is how you imagine they could pair together, the conversations they could have together. Will they get along? Will they fight? Then you just place them in real life and play around with them. What are some of your favourite flavour combinations? Cacao and hazelnut, strawberry plus lemon zest, and basil. Between the handmade Mylks, ice creams, chocolates, and cakes, which is your personal favourite? Chocolate all the way! What’s a must-have utensil in your kitchen? A sharp knife. Is there anything exciting and new coming to your menu or store we should know about? Sure there is! Come visit us soon and you will find out. Life is sweet, but you can enjoy it savoury too. ✤

The name is a curious story and it was the first thing I asked Nicky, who gave me the warmest of welcomes at reception. She explained that the name originates from English inventor William Henson, who discovered the safety razor, which he patented in the year 1847. When I entered 1847, I certainly didn’t feel like I’d stepped back in time. If anything, it was like going back to the future! It’s an inauspicious entrance with just a registration desk but the magic lies behind, where there are two large spaces – one is the barber’s room, the other is the treatment room. I started with a haircut. Having defaulted to type for years, I was a bit nervous about trying something new, but I needn’t have been. I was in the hands of Younes, a real professional. Raised and trained in Morocco, he used electric shavers on the back and

sides of the head and razors to accomplish sharp, straight edges. A bit of scissor action on top and then some product. 1847 sources the bulk of its stuff – from face scrub to shaving cream, beard moisturiser to pre-shave oil and post shave balm – from Murdock London. The exception to that is possibly the shampoo; Younes uses the French luxury hair brand, Kérastase, for that. There wasn’t too much chat and the wash, cut and dry was all done within half an hour, as promised. At the end of it I was very pleased with the modern and stylish haircut. Before moving on to my next treatments, I had a lovely cup of ginger tea in the other room which is the treatment zone. It is open plan but carefully designed with partitions that can hide you away while you’re having a treatment but also allow you to talk to your friend if you go in a pair. The design is not pretentious or achingly trendy but instead elegant, classy and comfortable. It has lots of dark wood features, cool grey leather and matte black tones. I had the express facial, manicure and pedicure all at the same time. This was a new concept on me. I’ve always done things singularly in the past, but this was a clever and appealing option. I got comfortable in an armchair looking straight ahead at a soporific screen showing fish swimming around in water, which was almost hypnotically relaxing. Therapist Analyn took care of my feet, while Clirebel worked on my hands and, simultaneously, Daniel sprayed rosewater on my face and gave me ‘The Grey Express Facial’ by The Grey. I don’t know what the secret is but after cleansing, exfoliation, a gentle serum massage and moisturising, I was glowing by the end of it. 1847 is the modern man’s kind of place. It’s efficient without cutting corners on quality. It’s five-star service with a hint of cool but not so much that it aches; and team members proudly boast
that no single treatment should take longer than half an hour. Now there is no excuse not to look our best, guys! ✤

What We’re (Still) Talking About Interview Art
Queen B
Undo Tweet
After much silence, the latest departures from the British Royal Family spilled all the tea in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Supporters and those opposing the departure of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry all tuned in to the two-hour special. In this infamous ‘chat’, the couple addressed countless incidents leading up to the royal split, such as racism and family struggles. And they did not hold back. Whatever stance anyone takes on this royal debate, in merely journalistic terms, Oprah conveyed a masterpiece of
It’s nearly impossible to find anyone who doesn’t love Beyoncé. She’s well-earned that love, as she broke records during the 2021 Grammy Awards, taking the most Grammy wins ever by a female artist (28), up from Alison Krauss’ 27. She was also the leading contender of the night with nine nominations. We won’t be surprised if, in the next few years, Beyoncé surpasses the overall Grammy record of 31 wins, held by classical conductor Sir George Solti. And it looks like success runs
This just in, Twitter is working towards the undo feature we’ve all been waiting for, but there’s a catch. It may only be available for paid subscribers — within a limited time period. The feature will allow paid users to undo their tweets in case they spot an error. This new development could be a response to the much-demanded edit option, that has yet to emerge on the microblogging network. It’s not really the edit button that people requested, but it’s better than nothing and a step in a favourable direction. Reverse

engineer Jane Manchun Wong first tweeted about the existence of the undo tweet feature with a shared screengrab which says 'Undo Tweet' located in the setting option. The exact date of this feature becoming available is still unknown, it’s also not confirmed whether it will be released worldwide or will be region-specific. But we know one thing, we can all use an undo now and again.
an interview. The conversation led to upended expectations, becoming a pop culture event. Celebrities have used the media to polish and create their images for years, as Instagram and Twitter have become the megaphone for their voices. And although the extent to which the issues raised in the interview will be taken seriously is up in the air, Oprah's television interview stands as a work of journalistic art on its own. 98
