Reflection And Celebration

With the Holy Month upon us, we are enjoying a period of reflection and, even for those of us who do not observe, this is a special time when we take the opportunity to adopt the habits of our Arab hosts and join together with friends and family for evening gatherings where good food and a great atmosphere are what’s on the menu. To help you decide where to break your fast or hold your get-together, we’ve come up with more than 40 Iftar and Suhour options to suit every taste. I hope you enjoy trying some of them.

And, as Eid approaches, as well as gifts our thoughts turn to travel for the long weekend break. So, we looked at some short-hop destinations that are an easy flight from Qatar and will offer lots to see, do and experience.

I love our 5 Over 5 interview this month with Patrick Blanc, who was in town to unveil his fantastical vertical gardens in two of the restaurants at Printemps Doha. He’s a man whose childhood hobby has become his life’s passion and he’s inspired me to be a bit more adventurous with my small plot.

As the Fact Dining Awards draw ever closer, my colleagues have been out and about sampling some delicious food around town. I think it’s going to be harder than ever to pick winners this year, especially with so many great newer offerings available – don’t forget to cast your votes at factqatar.com And, for this month’s test drive, we got behind the wheel of the new Maserati, be still my beating heart!

As always, you’ll also find our usual roundups of news from around Qatar as well as from the worlds of fashion, tech and entertainment.

I very much hope you enjoy this month’s issue and wish you, once again, Ramadan Kareem and Eid Mubarak.

CONSIDERED CONSUMPTION

Hilton has launched a crucial Green Ramadan initiative at Waldorf Astoria Lusail Doha.

The hotel company, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) West Asia and Winnow, has announced the launch of Green Ramadan – an initiative which will see food waste reduction efforts implemented across several key markets in the Middle East, including Qatar at Waldorf Astoria Lusail Doha.

The campaign aims to improve local sourcing and reduce food waste across hotels in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. With reports from UNEP West Asia revealing that food waste increases by 25% to 50% in the region during religious and social festivities, Hilton is introducing measures to minimise waste during the Holy Month of Ramadan and raise awareness around local sourcing and food waste. The initiative is in line with the hotel operator’s Travel with Purpose 2030 Goals to reduce food waste sent to landfill by 50%.

The partnership will combine Hilton’s drive towards a net zero future, UNEP’s ‘Recipe of Change’ food waste reduction campaign and Winnow’s AI technology – allowing for digitally led tracking of food waste throughout Ramadan.

In doing this, Hilton will gather data to predict future procurement and production needs while also minimising its long-term environmental impact.

As part of the initiative, participating Hilton hotels will compost excess food waste, prioritise local food sourcing within a 50-mile radius, promote plant-based dishes, restrict plastic use across operations and partner with food banks.

In Qatar, Waldorf Astoria Lusail Doha will offer guests a tasteful dining experience at Bywater Restaurant which takes pride in serving locally sourced produce from the Al Wabra Farm, showcasing a menu that plays an active role in reducing food-related emissions. The hotel has also partnered with the Hifz Alnaema Food Bank to reinforce charitable giving during the Holy Month.

Emma Banks, Vice President, F&B Strategy & Development, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Hilton, said: “As a global hospitality brand, Hilton has a responsibility to lead the industry in the pursuit of sustainable solutions. We are delighted to embrace the Holy Month of Ramadan with the introduction of the Green Ramadan initiative.

“We hope that this initiative will set the standard for years to come by encouraging local food sourcing and reducing food waste.”

Sami Dimassi, UNEP representative and Regional Director, West Asia, said: “We are very pleased to collaborate with Hilton to activate this campaign across its key markets in the Middle East. Reducing food waste is not only about saving food, but also about saving resources. The only way forward is to work hand-inhand by engaging the local community, private sector and influencers.” ✤

GEORGIA

Georgia offers the ideal quick get-away, with direct flights to Tbilisi International Airport. A great starting point, the capital city is home to Tbilisi Botanical Garden, which blooms in spring. There are thousands of native and global varieties of plants, as well as waterfalls to explore.

If you’re extending your holiday into early May, then you must not miss the annual grape festival – Georgia is known for its grapes. More than 100 merchants present their many varieties and you can also enjoy a food market and live music.

Visit the resort town of Borjomi, which is about two hours from Tbilisi. It’s famous for its centuries-old mineral springs that are said to have healing properties. There are many hotels and resorts that offer spa services – a great way to unwind.

Nature and adventure lovers will enjoy exploring BorjomiKharagauli National Park, where many cultural and educational tours are organised. You can also hike and camp at assigned sites. Board the Kukushka train or Borjomi-Bakuriani railway, one of the first railways in Georgia dating back to the late 19th century. Sit back and enjoy sweeping views of the nature-clad foothills of the Caucasus Mountains range.

Located about five hours from Borjomi, Batumi, the Black Sea capital of Georgia, is home to beautiful beaches and offers bustling nightlife.

EGYPT

Tourists flock Egypt at this time of the year. However, if you don’t mind a bit of a crowd, you can experience great weather – bright and sunny but not too hot. Take a direct flight to Cairo International Airport. Start off with a relaxing felucca – traditional Egyptian sail boat – cruise on the Nile, which offers beautiful views of this capital city.

It would be shameful not to visit the pyramids and the Great Sphinx at Giza, which is about a 10-minute drive from Cairo. We recommend going at night when there are relatively fewer people. Book your spot for the Sound and Light show when these wonderous structures are lit up, showcasing the rich pharaonic history from the mouths of the rulers themselves. Interact with the locals at Khan el-Khalili market. It’s one of the oldest with foundations dating back to the 14th century. Teaming with vendors selling traditional fabrics, jewellery and other items, it’s a great place to shop especially for souvenirs. Make a pitstop at a traditional coffee house, enjoy the local street food or simply unwind with a hookah. A caveat: weekends can get crowded and make sure you are ready to bargain.

Sharm El Sheikh is about an hour’s flight from Cairo but worth the trip. This beautiful beach town offers plenty of aquatic adventures. Ras Mohammad National Park is a popular diving and snorkelling site. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, the Red Sea is teaming with rich marine life to explore including coral reefs. Continue the adrenaline rush at Naama Bay’s beautiful beaches with parasailing, kayaking, banana boat rides and more. Not the adventurous type? Simply sunbathe on the golden sands or take a dip in the clear turquoise waters.

SRI LANKA

Dubbed as a teardrop in the Indian Ocean because of its shape, Sri Lanka is a heavenly island destination offering myriad experiences. This eco-tourism paradise lets you relax on nature’s green lap and watch wildlife in their natural habitat. Plan a trip to Yala National Park, which is about 300km from Colombo airport; there are direct flights available. Book a safari for some elephant- and leopard-spotting or even stay overnight at one of the park’s lodges or beach resorts – the park is flanked by coastline.

Sri Lanka is well-known for its tea plantations and the local Ceylon leaves are revered by tea drinkers around the world. Popular plantations are located at Nuwara Eliya, Kandy and Ella. There are organised tours available so, you can see how the tea is harvested, visit the factories and even sample this aromatic elixir. Ayurveda is big in Sri Lanka, which is home to many wellness resorts and spas. Santani in Kandy is globally renowned and offers a restorative experience with a range of wellness treatments including massages and food prepared by Ayurvedic principles. Book a one- or two-night stay at their garden or mountain view chalets and rejuvenate.

The climate’s usually hot and dry this time of the year but Sri Lanka spoils you for choice with its many white sand beaches. Popular ones include Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Weligama and Tangalla. Splash around in the sea or enjoy water activities such as snorkelling and surfing.

THE NEW MASERATI GRECALE

As long-time test drivers, the FACT team are always happy to get behind the wheel of a high-performance vehicle, especially when that vehicle is a Maserati.

Who wouldn’t want to spend the day in a Maserati? This month, FACT got to do exactly that thanks to the great team at Maserati Qatar, who handed us the ‘keys’ to the 2023 Grecale. Needless to say, we were super excited to get our hands on this high-end machine.

Exterior

Named after a North Easterly Mediterranean wind, the Grecale is certainly a breath of fresh air. The moment we laid eyes on the vehicle, we knew we were taking in something rather special. At the front end of this striking SUV sits a low and imposing grille, complete with brushed chrome inserts and a large Trident emblem. This flawlessly designed feature, along with the perfectly sculpted bonnet and contemporary LED headlights, combine to create an aggressive-looking front end that seems to stare you down, daring you to try and tame it.

We appreciated the seamless transition between the front and the sides, where elegant yet sporty curves and lines create a visually pleasing surface. Body-coloured side-skirts and 20-inch alloy wheels further add to the classy nature of the exterior as do the flush-to-the-body door handles.

The trapezoidal dimensions of the vehicle are evident at the rear end, where boomerang taillights – inspired by the Giugiaro 3200 – integrate flawlessly with the uniquely crafted lip spoiler. The

body-coloured bumpers at both front and rear contribute toward the SUV’s upmarket appearance, while the twin dual exhaust system, sitting under the diffuser, provides a subtle reminder of the Grecale’s on-road intentions.

Interior

The refined yet sporty feel of the exterior is skilfully complemented by the mastery of the interior design. The cabin of the Grecale exudes a sense of sophistication and elegance and is peppered with high-tech flourishes. Only the best materials have been used throughout, including Open Pore Wood and premium leather. The cabin also features beautiful trimmings such as the burnished inserts on the centre console and door panels. The button on the door rather than conventional door handles facilitates easy exit - every detail has a purpose. The spacious nature of the Grecale provides comfortable seating for up to five occupants, while the cargo area provides 20cu/ft of storage space. This capacity can be greatly increased when the power-folding rear seating is laid flat, accomplished by the simple push of a button in the boot. A flat load floor is located underneath these rear seats, providing yet another storage option.

Technology & Infotainment

The 2023 Grecale features the latest Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) multimedia system, operated through a 12.3-inch screen or

fact magazine 45
CITY RIDES •

voice control. This is the largest screen ever fitted in a Maserati and boasts a resolution of 15 million pixels in Ultra HD. An 8.8-inch screen has also been included in the setup and is used to access various additional vehicle controls.

The MIA is powered by the Android Auto operating system, which we found to be impressive in terms of response speed and overall operating performance. The system also allows two smartphones to connect at once via Bluetooth and is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Noteworthy optional extras include a state-of-the-art head-up display, three-zone climate control and a Sonus Faber 3D sound system with up to 21 speakers.

The key, which is actually a very funky show-off wristband, is a standard feature with the Grecale, allowing for easy access and engine start.

Power & Performance

Our favourite moment of the day was firing up the Grecale 2.0-litre turbocharged, mild-hybrid engine. Not only does the engine have the sweet Maserati sound to it, but the SUV’s potent powertrain can deliver up to 300hp (220kW) and 450Nm of torque. The Maserati Grecale also comes with two other engines, the Modena with a 330hp and the Trofeo with the Nettuno engine, giving you 530hp.

This beauty of a four-wheel drive offers three driving modes including Comfort, GT and Sport. Its versatile and capable performance ensures it’s as comfortable on the road as it is in the rough. We found the combination of these driving modes and the optional air suspension system to be sublime, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time negotiating the roadways of the Qatar. Furthermore, Maserati has included a full suite of safety and driver assistance systems, ensuring the well-being of all occupants.

Our Verdict

In the Grecale, Maserati has created a practical SUV that is amongst the very best in the luxury segment. Not only does it exhibit a near flawless design, it also delivers a capable performance and houses an impressive list of desirable technical features. ✤

A LONG-AWAITED DEBUT

Showcased at a recent event, the XM represents a fresh interpretation of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) developed from the ground-breaking fusion of the high-performance BMW M and progressive plug-in hybrid technology.

The first BMW M original since the M1, the new XM is the automotive group’s latest offering in commemoration of BMW M’s 50th anniversary. The vehicle features the newly developed M Hybrid drive system, an extravagant design and progressive luxury ambience.

The model comes with a 4WD Sand mode designed specifically for navigating terrain on and off the road making it ideally suited for the terrain and the driving conditions in the Gulf and the Middle East. Speaking on the launch, Dr Hamid Haqparwar, Managing Director, BMW Group Middle East, said: “We are thrilled to launch the new BMW XM here in the region. This model is truly made for the Middle East, with the all-new M xDrive system ideal for navigating this region’s terrains. Our clients have been requesting a luxury M Sports Activity Vehicle and we’ve answered them with the BMW XM.

“Since announcing the XM last year, we’ve seen incredible interest in the region and are expecting the model to be highly successful in the Middle East. We are confident that the BMW XM will open up the M experience to new target groups in the high-performance segment.”

The BMW XM’s M Hybrid drive system produces an overall output of 653hp and is powered by a high-revving V8 engine with cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology. The 4.4-litre engine is assisted by an electric motor integrated into the eightspeed M Steptronic transmission, delivering a maximum overall torque of 800Nm.

The BMW XM accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 4.3 seconds, accompanied by an energy-charged soundtrack amplified by hexagonal dual tailpipes arranged one above the other for the first time on a BMW M model.

The BMW IconicSounds Electric, developed in a collaboration with Hollywood music legend Hans Zimmer, creates a unique and suitable backing track for the electric motor’s power delivery. The XM’s intelligently managed interplay between engine and motor delivers a well-resolved performance experience worthy of the M badge in all driving situations. The M Hybrid button on the centre console of the BMW XM can be used to select one of three operating modes, including an Electric setting for cruising with zero local emissions at speeds of up to 140km/h and over a maximum distance of 88km in the WLTP cycle. ✤

PERFORMANCE REIMAGED

Abdullah Abdulghani & Bros Co. (AAB), the exclusive distributor of Toyota and Lexus in Qatar, has announced the arrival of the luxury crossover Lexus RX in Qatar.

The launch event was held at the Lexus Main Showroom in Doha. The Japanese Ambassador to Qatar, HE Satoshi Maeda, was the guest of honour. Attendees also included AAB CEO Abdulghani Nasser Al Abdulghani and AAB senior managers. The fifth-generation Lexus RX has been completely reimagined to deliver an improved style, comfort and performance. The new model offers a choice of powertrains, including an electrified one. This comes as part of the ‘Lexus Electrified’ vision announced in 2019, which aims to achieve significant performance improvements through electrification technologies.

The new Lexus RX is built on the brand’s Global Architecture K (GA-K) platform which has allowed a 90kg drop in the vehicle’s weight and delivers excellent body rigidity and a low centre of gravity. The vehicle also features new MacPherson strut suspension at the front and a new multi-link suspension system at the rear, contributing to the notable stability and handling experience of the model.

The RX’s two powertrain options include a newly developed inline four-cylinder, 2.4-litre turbocharged engine that produces 275hp and 430Nm of torque and is combined with a new eightspeed direct-shift automatic transmission (8AT).

Additionally, a hybrid-electric system pairing a 2.4-litre turbocharged engine with an electric motor is also available, which provides a combined power of 366hp along with a sixspeed automatic transmission that offers fuel consumption of 15.7km/l while delivering a highly satisfying drive.

Meanwhile, the Lexus RX’s design language boasts a more dynamic, elegant and confident character. A sleeker silhouette has been achieved by extending the bonnet, lengthening the wheelbase and lowering the roofline to create a coupé-like

feel. The triple LED headlights are sleeker, sharper and more horizontal. The introduction of a new Lexus badge on the tailgate adds to the vehicle’s clean and contemporary look, while the single-line signature Lexus taillights underline the vehicle’s iconic shape.

The model’s interior features five newly designed luxury seats with excellent legroom, including an eight-way adjustable powered driver seat. All the latest technologies, as well as the Lexus Climate Concierge system with Triple Zone Independent Temperature Controls and much more are to hand.

The new Lexus RX also comes with the Lexus Safety System+, an advanced safety and driver assistance system.

Customers can choose from 11 distinctive exterior colours, including the newly developed Sonic Copper. The interiors are available in a selection of three elegant shades.

Lexus has also introduced the RX 500h F Sport Performance grade that brings a new hybrid electric system that comes with a front unit that integrates a high-torque 2.4-litre turbo engine, six-speed automatic transmission and an electric motor.✤

In Conversation with… Patrick Blanc

We caught up with the man known for his vertical gardens when he was in town for the opening of Printemps Doha, located in Doha Oasis, where he has created green walls in the restaurants Matthew Kenney and Wild & The Moon.

fact magazine 60 • 5 OVER 5

Are you a botanist or a landscape designer? How would you describe yourself?

I’m definitely a botanist. I studied tropical botany at university in Paris, before specialising in the adaptive ways plants survive beneath the understory on the rainforest floor, where there’s only one per cent of full sunlight. I wanted to find out how plants cope with such a low level of light. Now, years later, I work at the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) in Paris, but well before that, I grew vertical gardens as a hobby. So I’m a botanist, but I also play with plants.

What inspired you to invent the vertical garden?

When I was 12, I read in a German magazine that putting the roots of a plant into an aquarium was a good way to take out all of the excess minerals. So, I tried it. It was a kind of biological filter for my fish – for the equilibrium of the aquarium. I added more and more plants, fixed them to the wall with string… Eventually, I thought that instead of only having water at the bottom, it would be good to have the water flowing on the surface of the wall, recycling the water of the aquarium. When I was in Thailand when I was 19, I saw plants growing in a very thin layer on tree branches. In nature, when they are regularly watered by rain, it’s enough, because they are growing in only a few millimetres of moss covering rocks. So I decided to use the thinnest material on my wall.

When did you first show the world your vertical gardens?

The first real installation was in 1986 at Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie – the biggest science museum in Europe. I developed a conceptual work for this museum – a screen growing with plants, just like the outdoor screens of Wild & The Moon at Printemps Doha. The public was interested, but I was more famous at the university, where I studied new plant species. I patented the idea in 1988, but it wasn’t until 1994, when I was invited to the international garden festival in Chaumont-sur-Loire, that I created

screens in the open air – one of them seven metres high – and suddenly they were a huge success. My exhibits are still there today and meanwhile I’m delighted to have completed over 300 projects around the world.

How do you choose which plants to use in your vertical gardens at Matthew Kenney?

[Patrick proudly shows us the lush vertical gardens at celebrity vegan chef Matthew Kenney’s new eatery.] At first, you might think that these plants are artificial, but they aren’t. They’re all real! This plant has bright red flowers, while these are greenish-yellow, even though they’re the same genus. These plants are very happy. You see all the new leaves? I only use plants that, in nature, grow higher on the branches of a tree or on rocks in the shade of the forest or near a waterfall. Plants are placed in the vertical garden wherever they would be in their natural habitat. These plants are from Peru, Chile, Thailand, the Philippines, Borneo, Tanzania, China… It’s very important to use different species because then there’s variety. I love that whenever you return to a vertical garden, it’s never the same. It’s always changing.

What’s special about your plant designs for Wild & The Moon?

For Wild & the Moon, there is an indoor part – featuring vertical gardens – and an outdoor part, where there’s a group of curved screens of different heights. Yesterday I went round a local nursery because, although most plants come from the Netherlands, some species were not available and I was surprised to find 10 species that are well cultivated here. So they’ll be planted at Wild & The Moon. This is something I’ve done for other projects in San Francisco, Bangalore and Shin-Yamaguchi Station in Japan, for example. There I also used local plants. For each project, there’s something new, something different. I love it.

A JOURNEY THROUGH NIKKEI CUISINE

A party in Kay Woodward’s taste buds happens at Chef Akira Back’s new Peruvian jewel in the Pearl’s crown.

Even the lift that whisks diners up to TONO by Akira Back is fabulous. As soon as we step inside, it’s like entering another dimension. The walls are smoky, dappled, mirrored and designed to make everyone look good. But the restaurant itself is something else. The Peruvian architectural avant-garde design of South Korean, world-renowed Chef Akira Back’s newest venture is truly unique.

Imagine if the most splendid art gallery in the world were mixed with the warmest colour palette, the coolest tunes – there’s live music and a DJ – and the friendliest staff. That’s TONO by Akira Back. Velvety chairs of burnt ochre encircle the tables, while cosy alcoves are tucked away along the walls and there are elegant private rooms if you’d like to host a small event. Outside, there’s an expansive terrace too. The ceiling is so high that there’s room for a dazzling mezzanine floor with a stunning bar and an intimate lounge. The enormous arched window gives everyone an amazing view of Porto Arabia. And everywhere, there’s bold artwork in homage to the chef’s artist mother. At its centre, a stunning installation that’s both a perfect centrepiece and an excellent conversation starter. I could describe it, but it’s definitely best enjoyed with a dish of ceviche, which leads us to the food. Chef Akira has expertly blended Peruvian ingredients with Japanese cooking techniques to create an innovative Nikkei cuisine that is precise and full of flavour. So, the ceviche. The ceviche made with sea bass was light and refreshing, citrus-cured with leche de tigre – literally, tiger’s milk. This classic Peruvian marinade is made from lime, chilli and coriander. There’s Cancha and Choclo, two different ways of preparing corn – a la Peruvian way. Mohammad, our fabulous waiter, hand-mixes everything as we watch, mesmerised. It is the

first of many delicious shared dishes. But there are also 0% cocktails galore. The Dragon Fruit Mojito is swoon-worthy, while the 0% Smoked Khiar is a beautiful blend of fresh cucumber and fresh watermelon juice, smoked with dry rosemary. It appears in a smoke-filled bell jar for a touch of theatre. Tiraditos is a Japanese-Peruvian innovative dish of fresh sashimi. We try the Toro with spicy miso dressing and sigh at the perfect blend of piquant creaminess and umami. A mysterious white orb in a cloud of dry ice appears, and inside, there’s grilled avocado sitting on smoked avocado and, to top everything, there’s pico de gallo. Nori and sweet potato chips provide the crunch to the gorgeous guacamole.

We’re presented the Wagyu A5 on a hoba leaf and a choice of steak knives in a wooden box. Meanwhile, the accompanying sauces appear on an undulating dish that Chef Akira has designed – it’s modelled on an artist’s palette, on which the sauces are arranged like dollops of oil paint. It’s lovely to look at and lovely to savour too.

Para picar – to snack at – come thick and fast. Wagyu Empanadas are crispy pockets of Wagyu beef, baked potato and onions that remind me a little of tiny Cornish pasties and taste as good as they sound. Pan de queso are light, airy cheese balls made with mozzarella and parmesan. They’re warm from the oven and so delicious. A word of caution: do NOT overlook the Broccolini. Served with spicy kabayaki

sauce, walnuts and crumbled with feta cheese, the flavour is smoky and just, well, excellent.

The seafood blows us away. Lobster, cooked live and served with aji panca and garlic butter, is savoury and soft, smoky and garlicky. It tastes as lobster should. The Hokkaido scallops are a work of art. They sit like tropical islands in a sea of Peruvian aji limo chilli sauce, each decorated with wafer-thin slices of jalapeño and yellow beetroot, topped with a tiny heap of truffle caviar. Executive Chef Hyungmin Bae – also known as Bobby –tells us that the slices of scallops are torched on one side to bring out their natural sweetness. Oh my.

We really can’t fit desserts in, but somehow we do. The Coco Meringue is a perfect disc of coconutty meringue that we smash to reveal citrussy, light yuzu sorbet beneath. Chocolatono is a concoction of seven different types of chocolate, including Streusel and crunchy praline. Mmm…

Tono is Peruvian slang for ‘party’. With live music from a Cuban band in the evenings, followed by a DJ set, the party vibe is strong here. But, brilliantly, it’s the place to let your taste buds party too. ✤

TOTALLY, TASTILY TURKISH

Ailsa Whyatt takes a tour of Türkiye that is packed with flavour at Yedi – Le Royal Méridien Doha.

Le Royal Méridien Doha lies nestled into the side of Lusail’s Place Vendôme. At the hotel’s very grand entrance, we are greeted with stunning chandeliers like suspended oyster shells and pearls. There is much to see en route; columns twinkling with lights, touches of greenery, cavernous ceilings and sparkling marble surfaces are the serene welcome you can expect. The cultural attention to detail is just as evident when we arrive inside our destination for tonight – Yedi. Turkish culture is rich, diverse and both influenced and enhanced by its neighbours, and this is no less true of its cuisine. We are welcomed in by Chef Esat himself, an Anatolian chef from Izmir in Türkiye, who has devoted his career to perfecting dishes from across the seven regions of his country. It therefore comes as no surprise to us when he translates the word ‘yedi’ for us; the Turkish word for ‘seven’. We are seated on the terrace outside, which overlooks the canal, but have a good look around the inside as well – there are touches of Türkiye everywhere, from glass and earthenware, to huge tea samovars, Turkish lamps and even a special Turkish ice cream cart for some lighthearted entertainment – you will get your ice cream…eventually!

Assisting us this evening is Assistant Restaurant Manager, Halil. Passionate about the food from his home country, he is both eager and excited to show us the best of what Yedi has to offer. Luckily, we came hungry as this is a feast from which I will continue to feel full for some considerable time after we have left!

Whilst the starters are being prepared a loaf of sourdough bread is brought out, served with a quenelle of kashkaval cheese, and drizzled with pomegranate purée. A traditional dish found in the

ON THE MENU •

mountains of northern Türkiye, it is warm, fresh and perfectly cooked. We have not long started when the most glorious mezze tray I have ever seen arrives. It is simply named Classics, and contains a daily selection of six mezze from across Türkiye. Girit Ezme is my personal favourite – a stunning blend of fresh basil, pine nuts, cow and sheep cheeses, and sprinkled with pistachio shards. Also delicious is Cauliflower Tarotor – a blend of labneh and cauliflower, with a sweet roasted pepper purée sitting at its centre, dusted in beetroot powder – and Muhammara, in which roasted pepper has been blended with walnut, breadcrumbs, olive oil and a secret bit of mild heat. It is sweet, rich and exotic. I love it. Before we move onto mains, we take one (or perhaps I should say, many) for the team, and sample a selection of Appetisers, Oven and Hot Mezze. We must do our homework thoroughly, dear reader! Balik is a sashimi of seabass marinated in orange, mustard, sugar, lime juice and zest, and olive oil, which sits on a bed of sea asparagus (samphire) – harvested fresh from the shores of Qatar when in season – and pickled shallots, avocado, a few herbs and an emerald-green plankton oil. The plankton is blanched to no more than 40˚C then blended with olive oil. Sea fresh and full of the colours of marine life, it is a wonderful and very tasty palate cleanser. Wild Mushroom Pide is a pizza-like dish made with shitake, Portobello and dried porcini mushrooms, oozing with aged kashkaval and sprinkled with herbs. Incredibly moreish but I urge you to pace yourself as there is much more to come…

If you eat nothing else before your main course, I would highly recommend Yedi Kibbeh – a specially designed flat lamb kibbeh, served with a very artistic ‘splat’ of sour cherry sauce. The tartness from the cherry complements the meatiness of the lamb, and the presentation is beautiful.

My star of the show this evening, however, is Levrek. Grilled

seabass marinated in lemon juice and herbs, served on a bed of artichoke cream, which is slowly cooked with olive oil, carrot, turmeric, potato and garlic, with fresh spinach and locally sourced purslane stirred through it. It is fresh, light, and a perfect blend of flavours. Also delicious are the Kaburga – these beef short ribs are cooked for 24 hours; you can taste the vegetable, veal stock and dates that make up the marinade and contribute to the wonderful meaty flavours. After a brief dalliance with Yedi Mangal (a ginormous plate of traditional mixed grill – the beef striploin shashlik alone makes this worth ordering), we heave ourselves in the direction of desserts. Must.Find.Room…

We are treated to Saffron Kunefe and Nitro Pistachio Baklava. The Kunefe is glorious. Crunchy wisps of angle hair, a perfectly balanced blend of honey and cheese, complete with delicate strands of saffron. For a new take on the traditional, the baklava has been infused with milk and sugar, rather than the classic water and sugar blend. The result is a filo pastry saturated in creamy milk, sprinkled with chocolate curls and topped with pistachio crumbs. How decadent!

The concept of Yedi’s cuisine is charming – you can settle in one region, or you can visit them all: from mountains to the coast, and dry lands to forests. The food is traditional and produced with pride and love. A beautiful setting, a warm welcome and a whole lot of Anatolian food. There is much to explore – we shall just have to come back! ✤

A CULINARY ODYSSEY

Kay Woodward spends a long, leisurely lunch at one of the friendliest, tastiest Greek restaurants in town.

It’s incredible to discover that in a city crammed with construction, an entire island’s-worth of hotel could spring up without me realising it, but it’s true. The St. Regis Marsa Arabia Island, The Pearl-Qatar shines like a pearl at the centre of Porto Arabia. Yet, despite living just a couple of miles away, it’s the first time I’ve driven over the fairytale bridge to appreciate it in all its majesty. It’s rather splendid.

Manos Doha is a traditional Greek fish taverna that perches on the southern edge of the palm-fringed island. Bougainvillea, olive trees and tables for cooler days and nights dot the terrace. There’s an unbeatable view from here – sparkling water, yachts and an indigo-hued West Bay in the distance.

Inside, there are clusters of green-and-white-checked tables and traditional wood and raffia chairs – and squashy seats too! – with columns here and there. The ceiling, I love. A carpet of greenery and flowers with a swathe of Aegean blue – if this doesn’t make you feel as if you just stepped onto a Greek island, nothing will. Michalis, a super-friendly manager, greets us as if we’re old friends. He’s from Rhodes, while Apostolis, our waiter, is from Athens. He brings a dish of tapenade, warm rolls and isosceles triangles of pitta bread glistening with olive oil. We can pick a set menu, then sit back and relax, he says. Or we can go à la carte. There are so many things that we’d like to try that we opt for the latter. The. Food. Is. Awesome.

I just want to get that out there. It’s full of flavour, perfectly prepared and 100% Greek. All of it.

The Greek Salad is the best I’ve ever eaten. Honestly. Tomatoes, cucumber, red onions and black olives are tumbled in olive oil and oregano with a rectangle of fabulously unsalty feta on top

and balanced on that there are capers. The Tzatziki is smooth, silky and garlicky, with the right amount of zing. The Taramasalata is traditional with a twist – pale coral and decorated with a circle of the tiniest mussels. I’m delighted to discover Tirokeftari – a blend of yoghurt, mayonnaise and spicy cheese, with a drizzle of chilli oil. It gives a proper kick. It’s my new favourite dip. I could eat it until the middle of next week.

The Feta Saganaki with honey and sesame is so good, it deserves its own paragraph. Imagine another rectangle of that fabulous feta, coated with sesame seeds, fried and finally drizzled with honey. It’s sweet and savoury and crunchy and gooey in the middle. Blimey.

Now for the seafood!

Manos has the most amazing charcoal grill, which gives anything cooked upon it a uniquely smoky flavour. I’ve never tasted anything like the Sundried Grilled Octopus. The cuttlefish – best enjoyed when drizzled with lemon – is tender and tasty.

The Popcorn Baby Shrimps – a speciality of Symi Island – are superb. Crunchy and moreish, they’re a wonderful nod to the very first Manos restaurant, on Symi. Do try them. And, while you’re at it, give the Mussels Saganaki in Mustard Sauce a go. They’re a piquant Greek alternative to moules marinière.

There’s a reason that all the seafood tastes so fresh at Manos. It is fresh. Pop to the back of their restaurant to see the Fish Market – or paradise, as Michalis fondly calls it. Here, a range of Mediterranean fish – flown in from Greece, especially for the restaurant, sits on ice. And it’s impossible for the lobster and oysters in the restaurant’s tanks to be any fresher. We choose seabass – there’s also red snapper and sea bream today – and it’s baked for us, just like that.

Greek dessert of the day is a sundae of champions – homemade vanilla and rose ice creams, with nuggets of syrupy quince, topped off with a biscuity leaf. An eye-opening Greek coffee is the perfect full stop to a long, leisurely, sun-soaked lunch. Michalis tells us that evenings at Manos are an experience we really won’t want to miss either. At 8pm every night, there’s a live band, traditional Greek dancing, followed by a DJ. Even better, as the sign on the table says, plate smashing is also on the menu. Just give your order to the waiter to join in the fun. We had such a great time at Manos. Rarely am I so blown away by such genuine warmth and hospitality. Manos has both, in spades. As for their food? It’s SMASHING. ✤

REACH FOR THE SKY

• STAYCATION
Kay Woodward heads to Raffles Doha for a weekend of high-rise heaven
STAYCATION •

Raffles Doha isn’t hard to find. Simply head for the most iconic building in Qatar… and you’ll strike hotel gold. Katara Towers – a 37-storey masterpiece inspired by the crossed swords of the country’s seal – stands on Lusail’s waterfront, looking fabulous. As we head up the wide sweeping drive to the hotel’s entrance, I’m fizzing with anticipation. If the exterior is this breathtaking, can the interior compete? (Spoiler alert: it can.)

We’re greeted by a charming doorman in a top hat, our car is whisked away and welcoming staff usher us into a super Instagrammable lobby. Clouds dance and swirl in an azure sky. I’ve no idea how they’ve done it, but it’s a work of kaleidoscopic genius.

If you’re hoping for a simple room at Raffles, think again. The hotel only does stunning, stylish suites – 132 of them in increasing levels of grandeur right up to the eye-popping Royal Suite. Ours is on the 23rd floor and reached via a plush crimson lift complete with velvet bench seat. And it’s huge. The bathroom alone is bigger than some flats in the City of London. But the pièce de resistance is the secret room at the heart of the suite. It opens to reveal a dressing room and an in-suite boutique. The balcony has a view and a half: by day, the sea sparkles; by night, Lusail glitters. There’s oodles of smart technology to create the perfect lighting, bath or shower experience and even bespoke aromas. If you’re not particularly tech-savvy, do not fear. Your personal butler – on call round the clock – can be summoned at the press of another button. They’ll sort any request in a trice. (A note to travellers like me who always leave something at home: Raffles has thought of absolutely everything. I’m especially thrilled to discover a Dyson Supersonic in the

secret dressing room and wash my hair three times in two days, just for the thrill of it.)

L’Artisan is the hotel’s main restaurant. Specialising in Modern European cuisine with an Arabic touch, it’s bright, high-ceilinged and airy. Enormous chandeliers drip with geometric icicles. Huge arched windows are gently frosted to encourage guests to focus on the food. Squishy leather chairs make it easy to linger over brunch. The Organic Egg Shakshuka is piquant, while the Caveman Breakfast – potato rösti, steak and egg – is smoky and smashing.

Lunch is something else. The Wild Mushroom Tartlet with caramelised onion is an explosion of texture, its glutenfree pastry unbelievably crisp. The Lentil Cappuccino reimagines the Italian coffee – lentils lie beneath a topping of cheese foam and a sprinkling of cacao powder. The panfried Dover sole is nothing short of awesome. So is the organic chicken, which is cooked for 10 hours and wears a delicate Oriental crust. Under the Leaves stars ‘olive soil’ – it’s earthy, olive-y and unbelievably good. Assistant Restaurant Manager Nadia expertly advises and serves us. Like all the staff here, she knows what she’s talking about. Chef Thierry Motsch describes L’Artisan as a great canvas on which to paint a brilliant culinary storyline. “It’s the art of dining,” he says. “It’s art on a plate.” He’s so keen to share his love of food that he runs a weekly cookery class. (I enjoy every minute and what I create!)

Experience ALBA by Enrico Crippa and it’s easy to see how the Italian chef earned three Michelin stars for Piazza Duomo – one of the 50 best restaurants in the world. ALBA is his first international opening. Technically, the restaurant might be in Raffles Doha, but in all other senses, it’s out of this world. Plush, dark green velvet sofas and deep red drapes are offset by crisp white tablecloths. The Romeo-and-Juliet Balcony is a wonderful touch and the backlit bar a thing of beauty. The ceilings are high, yet the alcoves are cosy and intimate. As for the cuisine… It’s plain to see that every single dish has been given such a lot of love and attention. We do likewise.

The Risotto Allo Zafferano e Ossobuco is deep yellow and unctuous. We eat it very, very slowly in an attempt to make it last forever. In Spalla di Agnello Arrosto Alle Erbe Mediterranée, Carciofo All Brace, melting lamb meets smoky artichoke and has to be tasted to be believed. As the menu says, there is always space for dessert! And Sorrento – lemon cake with almond ice cream and basil – is that dessert.

If there is one aspect of ALBA that deserves as much attention as the cuisine, it’s the staff. They know the menu inside-out. They know just when to appear. They’re funny and charming and the essence of Italian hospitality. We’re lucky enough to meet Chef Antonino D’Alessio too and his passion shines through. (There’s a chef’s table if you’d like to experience the theatre of his cuisine up close.) Max, the charismatic sommelier, pops up throughout our stay, surprising us with creations from Raffles’ inhouse laboratory. Here, mixologists invent brand-new ingredients for the drinks’ list. They are especially proud of their hydrosols – flavours made by distilling imaginative ingredients such as the indigo-hued butterfly pea. They’ve created an amazing non-alcoholic gin using 26 botanicals. Raffles’ beverages taste unique because they are. You simply won’t find them anywhere else.

When it’s time to chill, head to the Spa. There’s a gym, plunge pools – hot and cold – a sauna and each treatment room has its own Jacuzzi. I’m restored and rejuvenated with a relaxing foot massage, a facial and a massage. There’s even time to float in the outdoor infinity pool. Splendid.

At Malaki Lounge, reflections of swagged curtains disappear to a vanishing point in huge mirrors. This is where you’ll find the perfect cup of tea, whether it’s English Breakfast or Lapsang Souchong. There’s also a divine date coffee. And it would be rude not to try the Raffles’ Afternoon Tea, arranged artfully on a stand that’s in the shape of the hotel. Savoury choices include a Curried Egg Wrap with truffle oil and wholegrain mustard, an Alaskan King Crab Tartlet and a Wagyu Beef Harrisa Sando. There’s a whole suite of sweets. If I had to choose, it would be the Cornetto Dates. These are filled with peanut butter whipped ganache and salted date caramel. Yum.

If you’re a connoisseur, Blue Cigar is tailor-made for you. If you’re a keen reader too, it’ll blow your mind. There are 7,500 books in here, including 200 first editions among which is a first edition of Herman. Melville’s sea-faring epic, Moby Dick and a 700-year-old copy of Homer’s The Odyssey. In the lounge itself, dark hues are offset by a spectacular bar – wafer-thin marble is backlit to create an amber glow. Once the heavy velvet curtains are drawn, tall alcoves can be turned into private spaces to enjoy firstclass offerings from Cuba, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. Peckish, too? Try the Yellow Fin Tuna Tostònes. We whizz skywards on our final evening to visit Acoustic Music Penthouse – a rooftop lounge with live music that’s modelled on an upturned glass. The view is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

The five-piece jazz band is funky and cool. The beverages feature fabulous flavours from Raffles’ lab. And if you have room, the Tapioca Crisp with Chilli Prawn, Pomelo Salad and the Arancini are the perfect accompaniments. Acoustic is busy and buzzing, with guests from all over the city. It’s the place to be.

TRAVEL •

There are many magical spots across the globe that travellers long to visit. However, a few stand out in people’s minds due to the abundance of history, culture, architecture, beautiful weather and amazing cuisine on offer. Istanbul, in Türkiye, is one of these places. This beautiful and colourful metropolis is the only city that straddles both Europe and the Middle East, making it simultaneously a European and Asian city.

The five-star hotel Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus invited us to experience this bucket-list destination for four spectacular days and three unforgettable nights.

OUR ARRIVAL

As soon as we disembarked our flight, we were greeted by a hotel delegate and whisked away to our accommodation. En route, we caught a sneak peek of the splendour awaiting us in Istanbul. This breathtaking location, with its grand architecture, an assortment of mosques, vibrant colours and rich history, was enough to keep our eyes wide open in sheer awe at all the splendour to be discovered.

THE ROOMS

Arriving at Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus, courteous and professional staff were on hand to welcome us and attend to our every need. We were soon booked in and heading to our respective suites. We all agreed it had to be one of the friendliest and most efficient airport-to-hotel-room experiences we’ve ever had.

All 553 guest accommodations, including suites, are of an exceptional standard – we had the pleasure of inspecting numerous types, including rooms and a variety of luxury suites.

I was booked into the beautiful King Deluxe Room and couldn’t have been more pleased with my corner of the hotel. This stylish and modern space offers all the amenities you could need for a comfortable and pampered stay. With its king-sized bed, soundproof windows, free wi-fi, Nespresso machine, 40-inch LCD TV and a Turkish-style bathroom complete with rain shower, I couldn’t have felt more content.

THE CUISINE

The hotel ensured we were delighted in all aspects, especially when it came to meal times.

SUMMIT BAR & TERRACE

On the first evening, we were invited to attend a meal at the Summit Bar and Terrace, located on the 14th floor. The panoramic views of the city and the Bosphorus Strait that welcomed us on the rooftop enhanced the feeling of wonder that accompanies the experience of an exotic new location. Our first culinary experience at the hotel was memorable as we were spoilt with scrumptious dishes from around the world. The Asian options at this venue were exquisite and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal, along with the bird's-eye view of the city.

MANZARA

On our second evening, we were once again treated like royalty, this time with an invite to the Manzara restaurant. Once more, we were gifted with amazing views of Istanbul, including its historical peninsula. At this fine-dining restaurant, we witnessed exceptional chefs preparing dishes in an open kitchen. Boasting a delicious menu of culinary masterpieces from various Mediterranean cultures, it wasn’t easy to choose from the wide array of dishes on the mouth-watering menu. Ultimately, it didn’t matter what we selected, as all the food was prepared to perfection and we had a truly enjoyable evening filled with feasting and laughter.

Over our four days, we took advantage of this special space, where we could have some relaxing time, chat about our trip plans and enjoy the incredible art adorning the walls.

HOTEL AMENITIES

This award-winning hotel has been the recipient of many accolades. It has recently received the title of ‘Leading City Hotel of Europe’, amongst many others. This recognition is largely due to the wide range of amenities available. These include:

There is also a tennis club with two clay courts, a private multi-purpose studio, single and couples’ treatment rooms, a Turkish Hammam, a sauna, a steam room and more.

FUNCTION, CONFERENCE AND MEETING ROOMS

Amongst the excellent venues available at the hotel is one of the largest ballrooms in Istanbul. This lavish location can accommodate anywhere from 300 to 1,100 guests, depending on the setup and occasion.

The Panoramic Terrace is another great venue, allowing up to 240 guests to dine outdoors whilst taking in the truly spectacular views of the Bosphorus waterway and the Old City.

The Bosphorus Meeting Room is located on the hotel’s rooftop and is a more intimate venue that provides seating for up to 70 people, along with magnificent views.

Creed III Cunk On Earth

Need to Know:

Having left his mark on the boxing world, Adonis Creed retires to focus on his family but then a childhood friend and former boxing prodigy resurfaces after serving time in prison eager to prove he deserves a shot in the ring. The face-off between the former friends is more than just a fight. To settle the score, Adonis must put his future on the line.

Need to Know:

Cunk on Earth is a British mockumentary television series that’s been produced by Charlie Brooker of multiple award-winning Black Mirror fame. Cunk is a fake journalist who’s parodying a serious BBC interviewer while visiting real historical sites and museums, and meeting with leading academics in philosophy, science and related fields. Though silly initially, the series plays out as a riot of well-timed hilarity while also being exceedingly interesting and informative along the way.

Director: Michael B. Jordan

Cast : Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Jonathan Majors, Wood Harris, Mila Davis-Kent, Florian Munteanu, Phylicia Rashad

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Creed III is a sports drama film that’s the ninth overall in the Rocky film series. The movie also sees Michael B. Jordan (Adonis Creed) make his directorial debut as well as playing the lead role. When much younger, Adonis was best friends with Damian Anderson (Majors), a Golden Gloves champion with aspirations to turn professional and become a world champion. But Anderson’s life took an unexpected turn landing him in prison. Meanwhile, in the current day, Adonis has hung up his gloves to focus on his wife Bianca (Thompson) and their daughter Amara (Davis-Kent). He runs his boxing academy and is promoting his protégé. Damian reconnects with ‘Donnie’ after getting out of jail and shares his desire to resume his boxing career. Resentful after his time in prison, Damian feels robbed of his career and envious of Adonis’ life – his intentions aren’t good. As chaos ensues, these once friends now find themselves as bitter rivals who may have to settle their differences inside the ring.

Director: Christian Watt

Cast : Diane Morgan, Jim Al-Khalili, Shirley J. Thompson, Douglas Hedley, Brian Klaas, Ashley Jackson

Why Is It Worth Watching?

This collaboration between Netflix and the BBC sees the wonderfully witty Diane Morgan take on the role of Philomena Cunk, a character that gained fame on British comedy review programme Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe . Cunk isn't very well-informed, but that doesn’t hold her back from saying what she thinks, and what she thinks is often immensely funny. During the five-part series, Cunk covers serious topics along with serious experts, discussing events such as the emergence of humankind, the birth and development of religions, the renaissance, scientific advancements and the raging of world wars, as well as the state of current technology and culture. All the above are approached and engaged by Cunk with her unmistakably dry and splendidly sardonic sense of humour.

Surprisingly enough, through all the laughs, Cunk on Earth manages to get its facts right, which only adds to the charm of this terrific show.

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE This Stupid World

If you’re into alternative music, then this is an album to watch out for. An American indie rock band, Yo La Tengo was formed in 1984. Although some of the members have changed over the years, core duo, Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley have remained constant. Bass player James McNew joined in 1992.

This Stupid World has a unique stringsy sound. At the same time, it gives off indie vibes with atypical beats – the songs don’t try to maintain a beat just to qualify as club hits like on Tonight’s Episode. Ira’s singing style is easy going, as if he were jamming out of his bedroom-turned-studio, which offers a rustic edge as in Fallout Georgia on Aselestine will blow you away. The track has a different pace and energy compared to others on the LP; like warm sunshine thawing your cold heart. The words are raw, hitting the right spot. Speaking of lyrics, Until It Happens gives the listener a reality check. “Prepare to die/ Prepare yourself while there's still time/ It's simple to do/ And then it happens to you.”

There’s a heaviness that looms throughout, surfacing in songs such as Apology Letter, which ironically also proves to be the remedy. This release via Matador Records comes after three years, and, it’s safe to say, the wait has been worth it.

COUNTRY POP One Thing at a Time

Morgan Wallen’s latest release via Big Loud Records offers elements of country music with the acoustic guitar and Wallen’s addictive Southern accent, but with a modern touch, so to speak. Catchy tunes and simple words characterise this 36song album – ideal for a long drive. There are references to God throughout and even the music on many occasions seamlessly alternates between country and gospel. On Man Made A Bar , Wallen sings, “So God made a girl, His best work of art/ Oh, but he didn't make no place to go when she breaks your heart/ So man madе a bar”. But then, Wallen seems to have his own idea of God and religion. On In The Bibl e – “Lord knows I'd be one hell of a disciple/ If bein' country was in the Bible” and on Don’t Think Jesus – “Boy moves to city, lives fast and goes hard/ Starts chasin' the devil through honky-tonk bars”. There are references to imbibing, relationships and heartbreak too. It wouldn’t be hard to imagine these tracks being played on a loop in someone’s bedroom. One Thing at a Time is only Wallen’s third creation but is nonetheless promising.

HISTORICAL MYSTERY Symphony of Secrets

A terrible title for a fun and gripping read in which the works of a musical maestro are called into question. Music professor Bern Hendricks is called in to authenticate a lost opera from America’s most famous composer, Frederick Delaney. But, his research uncovers a shocking tale of stolen inspiration involving a young, black, jazz-age musician. The powerful foundation, which protects Delaney’s works, will stop at nothing to keep the secret hidden while Bern and his techsavvy chum Eboni will move heaven and earth to discover the truth.

SUSPENSE, PSYCHOLOGICAL FICTION Before We Were Innocent

A summer in Greece heralded the unthinkable for three young friends – only two made it home. The survivors, Bess and Joni, were cleared of any involvement in their pal’s demise but still, they were subjected to intense media speculation. One milked the tragedy to become a successful public speaker while the other hid away to lick her wounds. Now, 10 years on, successful Joni is entangled in a similar situation and Bess must decide whether to support her friend and at the same time face up to what happened on that fateful night in Greece.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

A Worthy Winner Nature’s Lightshow Cracked Egg

The Elephant Whisperers, the Indian short documentary film available on Netflix, winning at the Oscars was a proud and happy moment not just for Indians but animal-lovers around the world. Another win was Natu Natu, which cliched the academy award for original song, which some thought was debatable. But we’re not here to judge. We’re here to highlight how more films like The Elephant Whisperers must be made, watched and recognised. Directed by Kartiki Gonsalves, the plot revolves around Bomman and Bellie, a couple that takes care of orphaned elephant calves. Also featured is Raghu, a baby ele, whose mother dies after being electrocuted by a fence – elephants tend to walk toward the village in search of food and water especially during drier months. What ensues is a heart-tugging love story between human and (gentle) beast. The dynamic brings out how misunderstood these highly intelligent and emotional animals are – an urgent message given the dwindling numbers of Asian elephants.

If you haven’t heard of the Northern Lights, get out from under your rock already! The others will agree that aurora or polar lights are one of nature’s most enchanting displays mainly seen in high-altitude regions around the Arctic and Antarctic.
