Exclusive Tours for Culture Pass Members

Qatar Museums (QM) has announced that Culture Pass members can sign up for exclusive tours to see the magnificent National Museum of Qatar and explore its interior and exterior grounds.

Fifty tours have been scheduled to welcome Qatar’s residents to see the iconic National Museum building inspired by the beautiful desert rose design. The tours are open only to Culture Pass members who sign up online.

The National Museum is an architectural gem designed by world-renowned French architect Jean Nouvel due to open in December 2018. It tells the story of the people of Qatar, celebrating the country’s rich heritage. The musuem will combine historic objects and contemporary influences, opening up a dialogue around the impact of rapid change while honouring its ancestors’ legacy.

Qatar Summer Festival (QSF) organisers have confirmed that Arabic music star, Kadim AlSahir and Qatari singer Fahad Al Kubaisi will perform live in Qatar on August 17 as part of the entertainment schedule of the longest-running edition of the country’s summer festival.

Both artists are set to take to the stage at the Qatar National Convention Centre theatre to serenade fans with a selection of their best-known hits. The internationally-renowned Iraqi artist Kadim AlSahir, dubbed the “Ceasar of Arabic Song”, has been entertaining fans from across the Arab world and beyond for over three decades, selling over 100 million albums.

The evening’s events will kick off with a performance by the Qatari celebrity Fahad Al Kubaisi who has regularly performed during Qatar’s tourism festivals, showcasing the latest in the Qatari pop music scene.

Straight Out of Africa Set in rare and beautiful sand forest, Phinda Forest Lodge offers a sweeping view of one of the most unique ecosystems on the planet. Angela Beitz visits this magical place north of Richards Bay, South Africa.

A

lone bull giraffe slowly saunters across the dirt road in front of me. I haven’t even arrived at the lodge yet but I’m already gobsmacked to have seen this beautiful animal who stops to look at us for a few moments before slowly walking off, casting the occasional glance back in our direction.

I arrive at the Phinda Forest lodge, which is one of four properties that Phinda is made up of. Phinda, meaning ‘the return’ in Zulu, is a series of eco lodges from the andBeyond group.

Their focus is on preserving wildlife and they’ve worked to return the land to a thriving state after years of agricultural management and misuse. Phinda Forest is a luxury lodge with 16 suites. As it’s in the bush, there’s one main rule: no walking around the property by yourself at night. The wildlife, including lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalos and more can be found wandering around the property as it’s not fenced off (that makes it all the more exciting!). fact magazine

The luxurious air-conditioned glass suites at the Forest Lodge are on stilts and appear to float between the rare Sand Forest floor and the great Torchwood trees.

Floor-to-ceiling windows invite the forest in but the dense canopy provides privacy. The dainty forms of dwarf forest antelope dart among and below the suites, raised on stilts to float between the sandy floor and the leafy shade above. Waking up to rustling forest sounds and bird song, surrounded by delicate leaf-filtered light, gives us a pervading sense of peace and calm, setting the tone for your entire day.

The room boasts a beautiful king-sized bed and opposite to this, is a couch and table plus a writing desk. There’s a huge separate bathroom with many big glass windows (but don’t worry, it’s been designed so that no one can see in) and a large free standing bath. We love the Phinda body lotion, liquid soap and other amenities – all in gorgeous bottles – with the silhouettes of African animals on them. The suite is so beautiful, decorated in an exquisite combination of glass, timbers and neutral fabric – everything feels super luxe. There’s a large deck perfect for sipping an afternoon beverage that you can make yourself with their wellstocked mini bar, which is kept locked so that the cheeky monkeys don’t get their hands on what’s inside.

Game drives, as they’re called, rather than safaris, are really a must when you’re here. After all, getting up close and personal with the nature and wildlife is what this place is all about.

These are best to embark on early in the morning. As the 5:30am wakeup call rouses up and calls us to the main building at 6am, we’re given coffee, tea and biscuits which is such a great touch and something I feel I could really get used to. Africa is known to be the hotspot for the Big 5 which are the five most difficult creatures to find on foot.

This includes the lion, African elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros. Phinda is also well known for having 436 bird species.

beasts at this South African wildlife haven, which is particularly renowened for black rhinos and leopards.

Apart from game drives, there’s a list of 10 included activities such as a Zulu village tour, black rhino tracking on foot, swimming with whale sharks and seasonal whale watching amongst other once-in-a-lifetime experiences. There’s one rule for game drives: never break the silhouette of the Land Rover, which means not standing up in the vehicle.

The animals see the vehicle as one large entity that is larger than them so they do not take the vehicle on. Also, standing up makes it appear like you are towering over them which can be threatening to them. I board the open Land Rover and head out on a fifteen minute drive where we spot various wildlife set against the world’s only remaining sand forest. We start looking for fresh tracks and the guides spot some tracks for a lion and a leopard. The spotters are excellent here at Phinda, they have such an amazing passion for their surroundings and all that lives within it.

One of the guides lets us know that he’s spotted four cheetahs, so we head over to check them out. These graceful animals are just breathtaking and we sit in awe of them for a while until we notice they’re on edge and start looking around quite agitated. We then see in the distance, a very large female lioness, heading towards us. We drive towards her but she looks ahead in one direction, on a clear mission, and our guide explains that she’s in search of her two cubs.

The whole experience is just amazing and this is only a small snippet of what we encountered. Every game drive brings so much excitement and it renders us speechless every time, especially because you never know what you’ll see once you get out there.

s you might have noticed, we’re partial to experiencing the best in luxury hotels from Doha to worldwide destinations. You would think by now we would have gotten a bit jaded and fed up of sleeping in the plushest beds, eating Michelin-Star food and dipping into infinity pools. Well, we can tell you that it’s always a privilege to stay in any hotel – especially in Doha.

There’s no such thing as a sub-par hotel in this city (not the ones we stay at anyway) and one of the hotels we delighted in recently was Oryx Rotana Doha.

RELAXATION REVELRY The hotel overall, has a business meets pleasure aura. The main lobby is airy and spacious without being cold. Our room was bright, warm in tone and had (besides the big king-size bed) a decent size sofa, perfect for unwinding and relaxing. Although we didn’t spend all our time in the room, we definitely felt happy to come back to it each night. As soon as we walked into the room, we felt like we were at home – and that’s always a nice feeling to have.

After a full day of meetings, we were given an indulgent evening at Bodylines, the spa. We were booked in for a 30-minute scrub, followed by a sleep-inducing massage. Normally, scrubs don’t make you relax, they are rough on the skin and jolt your system but our therapist massaged the scrub on us which made it so 54

much more tranquil. As she removed the scrub with a luke warm towel, our skin was butter-soft and smooth. The oil-based massage that followed, was the cherry on top of a fantastic treatment that sealed off the day perfectly.

FOODIE FUN Known for its reliable comfort and fantastic food (the Rotana’s in the region have set the bar extremely high), we went for a dinner at Choices where the night revolved around steaks.

In a traditional yet fun and visually appealing set up, the buffets were stocked up with everything you can imagine outside the surplus of steaks – which included wagyu, tenderloin and rib eye meat. From simple to complex sushi rolls to avocado salad and impressive cheeseboards, there are plenty of non-meat options too. We settled for plates brimming with all of the above plus a perfectly cooked medium-rare tenderloin with a side of crispy onion rings and dollops of colourful condiments. The chefs and staff were quick to take our order and even quicker to bring it to the table. As far as the main buffet goes, there’s everything you could possibly imagine – lasagne, steamed fish, burgers, curry and a variety of roasts. Although it was the ‘Butcher’s Night’ when we went, it wasn’t restrictive at all.

The atmosphere is very lively at Choices – we definitely felt the good vibes here and we ended up staying for many more hours than anticipated.

One of the main highlights of staying at Oryx Rotana was being able to experience The Cellar. We were booked in for a Spanish express lunch where we had a three-course meal.

For starters, we had a Spring Fresh Salad made up of grilled cheese on toasty and crunchy garlic bread, berries dressing and dukkah. This was hands-down the best salad we had tried in a while. It was tangy, sprightly in flavour and filling enough to get us going onto the main course.

The heart of the lunch saw a fiesta arrive at the table in the form of a Piquillos Gratin with Codfish – this was chunks of codfish stuffed in red peppers, swimming in thick and creamy red béchamel. We died and went to heaven with this dish – it was stunning in presentation and in taste. As for desserts, we went for a crowd-pleasing (very big) portion of Chocolate Churros with pastry cream. This dessert was faultless.

Oryx Rotana Doha is a fine option for anyone visiting the city.

waiting the opening of the Shangri-La Hotel, Doha was like waiting for your favourite rock band to come on stage. The hype was palpable and you knew it was going to happen but you had to wait forever for it.

Then, when it eventually opened 18 months ago, and after spending a recent weekend there, I’ve strongly arrived at the conclusion: if you’re going to open a world class hotel with a global reputation then – GET. IT. RIGHT! And they have!

Enjoying a pool day at this fabulous 5-star property was the perfect way to kick back on a spare summer weekend. The pool area is located on the 7th floor, and is described as the largest outdoor pool area in West Bay. 58

It’s decked out like an Arabic garden with lush palm trees, green grass and beautifully cultivated flowerbeds. In the not particularly decorative dusty desert space we inhabit most of the time, this lifts the mood and frees the spirit, which also makes it a superb space for contemplation and relaxation.

The pool itself is not plainly rectangular but slightly curves around the building with a bridge across the middle of it. There are trees built on stumps in the pool. If you want to improve your speed during laps, perhaps avoid this pool but for a lazy afternoon lounge in the sun, you can float in it surrounded by the iconic skyscrapers that make up the city’s skyline yet will feel like you’re in a cosseted oasis at the same time. There are even bar stools to sit on and sip your fruity mocktail in the afternoon sun – could it get any better?

The staff are sweet and super attentive. We were showered in snacks and mocktails when ordered; mostly calamari and virgin mojitos off the extensive poolside menu.

They do a great Arabic shawarma and some finger lickin’ burgers too. And if you want somewhere to burn those calories, the gym overlooks the corniche so if that isn’t motivation to get on the treadmill then I don’t know what is. Changing rooms are stylish and ultra modern too, with separate areas for men and women.

I was hungry after a lazy afternoon in the sun and the hotel’s international restaurant, Sridan, presented an excellent social dining experience for dinner. It’s not an attempt to please the masses like most international, non-specialist restaurants often are. Sridan really knows how to impress. It’s a buffet format and there are different themed food stations everywhere. Better still, much of the food at these stations is freshly cooked for you so it doesn’t have that lukewarm feel like it’s been there since lunchtime!

We started with sushi, then some lakhsa soup, moving over to the Middle Eastern section for the shish taouk and lamb kibbeh before some chicken tikka massala from the Indian section – delicious doesn’t even begin to cover it. Of course, the obligatory chocolate praline cake from the dessert station was a must and I also attempted to attack the cheeseboard, a rare sighting in the capital.

It’s not exorbitantly expensive and with so much food to choose from you’re definitely getting bang for your buck!

The Shangri-La Hotel, Doha has really got its act together. With a truly customercomes-first attitude, first class facilities, and immaculately designed and looking recreation areas and food and beverage options, you can easily spend the whole weekend here and wonder how it went so fast! ✤

ward-winning photographer Jessica FulfordDobson will present her critically-acclaimed series of portraits, Skate Girls of Kabul in her first show in the Middle East. Presented by Qatar Museums under the leadership of its Chairperson, HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the exhibition will be held at the QM Gallery Katara unti October 21.

The portraits tell the extraordinary story of Afghan girls who took up skateboarding, thanks to Skateistan, an Afghan charity that provides skate parks as a hook to get children from disadvantaged families back into the educational system. The striking images bring to life the hopeful spirit of these young girls that show a new perspective and dimension to skateboarding culture — one that shows strength in the face of adversity.

“THE STORY OF AFGHANISTAN’S SKATE GIRLS GRABBED JESSICA’S ATTENTION IN LATE 2012 AND SHE WAS DETERMINED TO TELL IT TO THE W O R L D.” “Qatar Museums has a long history of sharing some of the world’s best artists and their works with the people of Qatar and the Skate Girls of Kabul is a perfect example of that,” he added. “It is also a story that embodies a message of hope and perseverance in reaching your dreams, in this case access to education, a message that perfectly aligns with Qatar Museums’ passion for supporting and enabling local communities with access to creative learning environments.”

The story of Afghanistan’s Skate Girls grabbed Jessica’s attention in late 2012 and she was determined to tell it to the world, sharing its uplifting message and inspiring others to support the Skateistan charity.

Jessica created the photo series with the hope of showcasing the happiness Skateistan has brought to the girls whilst not influencing their culture, but working with it.

The series was first shown in London at the Saatchi Gallery in 2015, where it was positively received and 66

viewed by more than 74,000 visitors during its twoweek run. The Art Newspaper in 2016, revealed that Skate Girls of Kabul came second in the Top 10 most popular International Photo exhibitions of 2015.

The series went on to win the Imagery of the Year Award at the Women’s Sport Trust #BeAGameChanger Awards in London. In New York, one of the Skate Girls portraits was selected for the ‘Best of Show’ Exhibition 2015 at the International Photography Awards. The Smithsonian chose the Skate Girls of Kabul book as one of their ‘Top Ten Best Photography’ books of the Year in 2015.

Tim Marlow, the Artistic Director of London’s Royal Academy of Art, has personally selected QM Gallery Katara’s upcoming showing of the Skate Girls of Kabul as one of his ‘Must-See Museum Shows’ from around the world.

Celebrating and embracing the community-based inspiration behind the show, Qatar Museums will set up a skate ramp that will be built on the occasion of the exhibition and open to the public for the duration of the show. Lana’s newest project, Lust for Life is yet another powerful display of her enchanting vocals. After a 16-month hiatus, the hauntingly beautiful track Love came as a pleasant surprise for fans. Its retro sounds display a gritty realism that has been missing from the singer’s previous work and we certainly don’t mind hearing it!

The dreamy song is giving us ethereal, spacey vibes while the rest of the record is definitely a star-studded venture; the unlikely yet fiery collaboration with The Weeknd is what we’re most hyped about. The perfect opposites are able to create a song that’s straight out of the future – number one caling? We think so. The verse melts into the chorus and while The Weeknd does bring his trademark sound into the mix, it still remains Del Rey’s song through and through.

Here’s hoping Lana Del Rey’s mesmerising music and her brand of vintage melancholia is able to tug at everybody’s heartstrings yet again!

After a chart topping, critically-lauded album like Get to Heaven, Everything Everything had some big shoes to fill, and their own at that. Following a two-year break, the English indie rock band is back to remind us why we fell in love with them in the first place! A Fever Dream, their fourth studio album is a cementing of their original experimental pop sound and is a true testament of what makes them so unique. Can’t do is a synth jammer that maintains the band’s unwavering originality while commenting on the way of the world. The Manchester four-piece are aiming to move away from shuffling vocal melodies and are making way for fluttering electronica and pop. While the album as a whole is definitely convincing, the title track is totally one of our favourites!

The introspective ballad bursts into a number of moods, unlike anything they’ve ever produced before. A Fever Dream clearly validates their status as one of the most compelling and unpredictable bands of our time.

In need for some much needed body inspiration? Dive into Roxane Gay’s truly heartbreaking yet incredibly important memoir about her personal struggles with accepting her body. Gay’s empowering story narrates a tale of desire and denial that we all can relate to. Roxane talks about what it means to care of yourself and how to feed your hungers. She lays herself bare and uses words to entice a plethora of emotions in her readers. Self love is the greatest love and Roxane truly drove the point home. A remarkable and unflinchingly honest read!

The flagship Maserati model has been relaunched for 2017 with an exterior restyling, further refinement for the interior and additional high-tech features. Furthermore, a new trim strategy has been launched with the introduction of the GranLusso and GranSport trims.

fter three and a half years of unprecedented success in the international markets, the Quattroporte undergoes a substantial restyling that accentuates its elegance and its signature Maserati personality.

The restyled Quattroporte’s exterior can be recognised by the new bumper design with matte black profile at the front and the matte black extractor at the rear. Even the new front grille, a centrepiece of the Maserati identity, evolves into a new shape. It is inspired by the Alfieri and already featured on Levante. It is more pointed and imposing, and introduces new vertical chrome elements in contrast to the deepness of the shark nose effect. Other distinguishing details of the new Quattroporte are the matte black side skirts and the exterior mirrors, slightly restyled as well to incorporate some new technical features.

The improvements in the interior were developed to enhance the purity of the design by underlining only the functional parts, through clean integration of the new interface elements with the infotainment area and tunnel console.

The redesigned central dashboard now accommodates a capacitive high resolution 8.4” screen with multi touch function.

This area is now characterised by a continuous technical element that integrates screen, a new climate control and a new drawer in a single seamless design typical of the Quattroporte.

The central, lower console has also been redesigned and now features a rotary knob for volume and functions control, a new lid and phone box.

The new infotainment system is compatible with both the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring functions.

All Quattroporte are now equipped with an Air Quality Sensor, a feature that substantially improves the comfort for the occupants onboard.

More than three years after its presentation, the Quattroporte remains distinctive and exclusive, a harmonious combination of elegance and sportiness which expresses a definite masculinity.

It feels untouched by time thanks to the delicate approach of the Maserati Design Centre in Torino during the restyling process. ✤

here aren’t many Japanese restaurants in Doha, and those that have previously attempted to take on the delicious cuisine have done so with little imagination.

That is, until Megu opened its doors.

With the popularity of Japanese cuisine rising over the last few years, Megu was created to cater to a more upscale clientèle, offering a modern and contemporary take on traditional Japanese dishes. Megu, which means ‘blessing’ in Japanese, was first opened in New York City over ten years ago, serving outstanding food in a trendy setting inspired by Japanese interior accents, exuding elegance and timelessness.

Known for its specialised interpretations of sushi, sumibi aburiyaki, a grilling technique using “bincho-tan”, and a special charcoal found only near Kyoto and prized for its superior purifying properties, Megu is a sophisticated concept of organic dining. The restaurant is a sophisticated set up of stylish yet understated Japaneseinspired interiors, creating a sense of calm and warm welcome to its surroundings.

Don’t worry if the menu sounds too exotic, it comes with pictures and the staff are incredibly helpful in explaining what each dish involves. On the new menu, we go for the house favourite Crispy Asparagus, the Kanzuri Chicken with an exceptional chili sauce and piri-kara dressing, the delicate pan-fried Wasabi Prawns and our standout dish the Shoyo Ramen made up of Japanese wheat noodles in soy based soup with nori, baby asparagus and boiled egg. You can add your choice of chicken, shrimps or beef to this.

If you’re wanting something healthier and super fresh, go for the Sakana Combi with a diverse selection of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, seabream, shrimp and squid in one large platter. This is a great option for sharing!

The grills are just something else here.

Order the Grilled Seafood Trio Butteryaki and indulge in scallop, salmon and shrimps served on a bed of pan-fried veggies.

Whilst the Kagerou Wagyu Beef Steak will sizzle on hot river stone accompanied by a delish kimchi cucumber salad, a side of steamed white rice and a lip-licking

kagerous sauce for dipping.

It was the desserts that REALLY blew us away with their creative concoctions and insta-worthy presentations. The Frumaki is finely cut seasonal fruits in a maki roll with chocolate wasabi syrup – it’s as delectable as it sounds. The Green Tea Crème Brulee is a twist on a dessert classic, and the diced fruit on top adds a nice fresh touch to the light green tea flavour.

At the end of the review, we had the opportunity to speak to Peter Lyons, General Manager of Hospitality Development company and the brain child behind Megu’s new and improved menu.

We asked him to give us an overview of the menus new features and philosophy.

“Megu is a simply a stunning venue, I fell instantly in love with its elegance and opulence when I started with HDC six months ago,” he said. “It has a distinct feeling of exclusivity augmented by the fact that its entrance is almost a secret nestled in Porto Arabia 6 La Croisette.

The only way to access Megu is by a private elevator,” Peter explained.

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT “The issue with Megu’s previous menu was that it was poised at the very top end price point, so while the feedback was always one of excellence. I felt that sustaining such a restaurant was not possible when it only catered to such exclusivity.

“I very much wanted to share the beauty of Megu and its cuisine with the majority of diners in Doha and to that end we have designed a menu that is much more affordable, has many pricing options and most importantly maintains the quality Megu is known for,” he added. “By sourcing many local ingredients and many early trips to the fish market for example, we were able to provide a superior quality offering at a much more logical price point. We spent many weeks developing each dish to perfection and I am incredibly proud of my team’s accomplishments here, It really is a menu to be proud of and I have little doubt it will put Megu back on the map as one of Doha’s dine out destinations.”

W

hile West Bay is the hip younger brother to the old city centre and new kids on the block like Lusail, the Pearl and Festival City all start to make their indelible mark on the food scene, it’s easy to forget the old haunts that still exist in the old city which still have high standards and remain crowd pleasers.

One such place is the Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha which boasts half a dozen great restaurants, and we were here to experience one of the best. Hidden in an out-house on the far side of the large outdoor family pool area is The Italian Job named after the Michael Caine movie and its menus are full of the iconic quotes and motifs from the classic British film like “you’re only supposed to blow the bloody doors off !”

Although the movie has very little to do with Italy, it’s hard to pick fault with this place, where the staff ensure that you’re looked after in a home away from home setting. The venue is cosily decorated, reminiscent of an Italian farmhouse with lots of wood brick and earthy colours.

The downstairs area is entirely nonsmoking whilst the upstairs section is where diners can choose to smoke if they wish - a rare but worthwhile plus point in our book which keeps everyone happy. Tables are nestled in alcoves or brick booths and even as we’re sat close to other diners, the set-up doesn’t feel crowded; you still have your own space and privacy.

To begin with, we notice that the menu prices are very reasonable for 5-star hospitality and on top of that, the staff are incredibly attentive, friendly and discreet. When it comes to appetisers, we’ve grown too tired with Italian restaurants that just disappoint when it comes to starters. They’re often tasteless and a formality that you’re expected to go through – however, The Italian Job breaks this unlucky food streak 92

of ours. We delve into the crispy fried calamari, hammour strips, shrimps and scallops which, whilst not sounding the most Italian of dishes, went down an absolute treat with a bottle of Chianti served from the restaurant’s stellar cellar.

Another appetiser we dipped into was the Burrata Cheese from Apulia with Beef Bresaola Roses – simply delectate, delicious and filling.

The mains were wholesome and the flavour was on point. We haven’t had a good carbonara sauce in a long time and were so glad that we ordered it. Just the right amount of creamy with the beef bacon – it was everything we wanted it to be and then some! Also, the guitar spaghetti with lobster and herbs was another shining star at the table – both dishes were finished with gusto (because, you know, dessert!).

Desserts at The Italian Job are dangerously TASTY! The rich almond chocolate cake with sabayon and marsala vino ice cream is very popular and for good reason. Local gyms love it

too and they know their membership subscriptions increase after customers dig into this – but every spoonful is worth that extra cardio!

What really made the visit to The Italian Job memorable was the versatility of the waitresses. Not only did they serve us efficiently and with great care, they proceeded to sing for us while we dined.

Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys were among the artists whose songs serenaded us. Incredible voices too! We had beaming smiles on our faces the entire evening and felt thoroughly entertained.

So, should you visit? YES. Was the food good? GREAT. How about the service?
