“
CHAIRMAN KHALIFA BIN MUBARAK AL KHALIFA
“Who’s the bane of Santa’s life? The elf and safety officer.” – Catherine Tate
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER GREG HUGHES
t seems like only yesterday that I was writing this very monthly letter talking about how fast the year has gone and my goals for 2018. Where has the time gone? I’m sure many of you find yourself asking this same question. And if, like me, you’re wondering exactly what you’ve done, achieved or experienced in the past year, here’s how to give yourself a little reminder. A colleague recently told me to look through my photo gallery on my phone and scroll the last 12 months. Wow! There are things I did in 2018 that I’d completely forgotten about; scaled a mountain and zip-lined off it in Oman, finally made it to Azerbaijan, attended one month of back-to-back family weddings, and in a very unexpected turn of events, decided to take the adrenalin up a notch and do the world’s longest zip line. No biggie! So while December can be a month of complete chaos, too many dinner parties, lots of brunches, and all-round celebrations, make sure to take a few minutes, slow down and have a cheeky little scroll through your 2018 in photos - believe me when I say that you’ll find some real gems that will bring back all the memories. For those of you who like to dive straight into the holiday season, it’s time to amp up the excitement and plan your month ahead. We’ve got all kinds of festive treats picked out for you; from gingerbread house decorating to festive afternoon teas; delicious dinners and lavish brunches, you need to turn straight to p23 for the lowdown. Similarly, New Year’s Eve is set to be a full-on party right here in Doha, with venues bringing their A-game to the event. Think parties, gala dinners, intimate soirees and more to choose from, starting p44. Have you been to InterContinental Doha’s new venue, La Mar? If not, get ready to be enticed with the flavours of Peru (p83). Additionally, La Vista 55 hits the spot for bringing the very first Cuban-inspired menu to Doha in a picturesque setting at InterContinental Doha The City (p87). Fashion, beauty, tech, and travel also makes up a huge part of the December issue, so check out wardrobe inspo, gadget must-haves and the best places for a travel escape in Doha and beyond. I started with a winter playlist as early as mid- November!). As Jingle Bells Rock - the Mean Girls’ version of course - plays in the background as I type, I can’t help but feel a big inner festive cheer coming on, for the incredible year we’ve had at FACT, and for the endless possibilities to come in 2019!☺

IMMERSIVE MUSEUM EXPERIENCE The National Museum of Qatar, centered on the country’s restored historic palace, is the architectural masterpiece by Jean Nouvel, integrated with commissioned artworks and films, rare objects, and expansive gardens, set to open in March 2019. QATAR MUSEUMS HAS ANNOUNCED that the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ), housed within a spectacular new building designed by architect Jean Nouvel, will open to the public on March 28, 2019, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The immersive and experiential NMoQ tells the story of Qatar and its people from more than 700 million years ago through to today, giving voice to Qatar’s rich heritage and culture and expressing a vibrant community’s aspirations for the future. The new museum embraces, as its centerpiece, the restored historic Palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani (18801957), son of the founder of modern Qatar: a building that in former times was both the home of the Royal Family and the seat of government, and was subsequently the site of the original National Museum. Jean Nouvel’s new 40,000-squaremeter (430,000-square-foot) building incorporates the Palace while seamlessly integrating innovative artworks commissioned from Qatari and international artists, rare and precious objects, documentary materials, and interactive learning opportunities. Jean Nouvel’s dynamic architectural design echoes the geography of Qatar while evoking the history and culture of the nation. According to Nouvel: “Qatar has a deep rapport with the desert, with its flora and fauna, its nomadic people, 10

its long traditions. To fuse these contrasting stories, I needed a symbolic element. “Eventually, I remembered the phenomenon of the desert rose: crystalline forms, like miniature architectural events, that emerge from the ground through the work of wind, salt water, and sand,” he added. “The museum that developed from this idea, with its great curved discs, intersections, and cantilevered angles, is a totality, at once architectural, spatial, and sensory.” The National Museum of Qatar is organized in three “chapters”— Beginnings, Life in Qatar, and Building the Nation—presented in eleven galleries. The visitor’s chronological journey, which extends through more than 2.7 km (1.7 miles) of experiences, starts in the geological period long before the peninsula was inhabited by humans and continues to the present day. The route passes through a succession of impressive, remarkably shaped volumes until it reaches its culmination in the very heart of Qatari national identity, the thoroughly restored Palace of Sheikh Abdullah. ✤

BIG SCREEN Mary Queen of Scots WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary Stuart returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her throne as well as defying pressure to get remarried. With Scotland and England under the rule of Elizabeth I, the two young queens are rivals in power and love as they must decide how to play the game of marriage and independence.
DIRECTOR: Josie Rourke CAST: Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?
Based on John Guy’s biography Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart, Mary Queen of Scots is a lavish epic featuring two female regents in the masculine world. One of many movies to explore this timeless tale, the film tries to complicate the narrative and tells the story in a way that has never been done before. Starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie as Mary, Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth respectively, the latest rendition talks about themes that are relevant even today. Defying societal pressure to get remarried, Mary heads to Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But with Scotland and England under the rule of her cousin, the compelling Elizabeth I, the young queens battle it out in the name of love and power. Gripped in fear and fascination for each other, both queens experience betrayal and conspiracies within their courts which endanger their thrones and change the course of history forever. A whole lot of scandal, impressive wigs and renaissance flair.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald WHAT’S IT ABOUT:
In order to prevent Grindelwald’s plan from coming to fruition, Albus Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the danger that lies ahead. What follows is the test of love and loyalty in an increasingly divided world.
DIRECTOR: David Yates CAST: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?
Get ready for some serious nostalgia as the second adventure in J.K. Rowling’s film series takes us back to the magical world we all know and love! Featuring unworldly young magi-zoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), the film takes a darker and more sombre turn. As Albus Dumbledore tries to thwart Grindelwald’s plan to raise pureblood wizards to rule over all nonmagical beings, he enlists the help of Newt, despite the dangers ahead. A treat to all Potterheads, Rowling has incorporated references to the Hogwarts universe, younger versions of old characters as well as hints of an origin myth. Johnny Depp’s epic portrayal of Gilbert Grindelwald and Jude Law’s striking performance as young Dumbledore definitely deserve a special mention.

Yandhi
By Kanye West
Giving us our much-needed dose of ‘Ye, Kanye West is back with his ninth studio album, Yandhi. After an eventful year delivering a number of chart-topping hits and plenty of personal drama, his newest album was hotly anticipated. Recorded in his hometown of Chicago and in a studio set up in Uganda, the album features an array of guest artists, including Ty Dolla Sign, Rihanna, Kid Cudi, Young Thug, Migos, Nicki Minaj and posthumous vocals from XXXTentacion. Accompanied with a goofy and bizarre video, I Love It featuring Lil Pump and Adele Givens is as outrageous as it is catchy. The quirky lyrics combined with a catchy beat and comedian Adele Givens’ interspersed jokes make it a song that people won’t be forgetting anytime soon. This album is all about good vibes and great tunes. We Got Love featuring Teyana Taylor is all about self love and self improvement. Showcasing a well-constructed verse by Kanye and Teyana Taylor’s stunning vocals, the track totally reels you in. This has definitely been Kanye’s year in music, maybe not so much on social media though. If the music’s good, we’re not complaining.

The Pains of Growing
By Alessia Cara The follow-up to her massively successful debut album, Know-It-All, Alessia Cara’s newest offering blesses us with another round of mesmerizing vocals and amazing tunes. After a number of smash collaborations, Disney theme songs and a Best New Artist Grammy, the Canadian singer has finally released her sophomore full length, The Pains of Growing. A midtempo pop song with soulful vocals and lyrics, Growing Pains is exactly what a classic Alessia Cara song sounds like. A song about loneliness, growing up and trying to overcome the sadness that comes with it, Cara dives into her deepest feelings. A lot more personal than anything she has ever put out before; the album sees her at her most vulnerable. Craving independence and self-empowerment, the bubbly track Trust My Lonely is exactly what we need right now. The perfect balance between vibrant youthfulness and self-affirmation, this is definitely one of our favourite songs on the album. Written during a very important and confusing time of her life, The Pains of Growing is as relatable as it gets. We’ll be belting out these tunes for days to come!
A hilarious and heart touching collection about love, loss, work, comedy and figuring out who you really are. This is the book you need to pick up for a much needed dose of inspiration and a whole lot of laughs. As she makes her way across the country all alone, Abbi finds comfort in solitude as she mulls over the big questions that have shaped her life. Narrated in a wildly funny, relatable voice, with a fun, reflective and ultimately inspiring journey!

STAYCATION SPOTLIGHT •
I
f you stood where the Museum of Islamic Art is back in 1982 and looked out across the bay, the sight would look very different to how it does today. You would see only one landmark on the horizon at the other side of the crescent and it would look like a ship moored in a harbour. The sight was in fact a hotel called the Sheraton and over 35 years on, the landscape looks completely different to those desolate days, but the Sheraton’s iconic ship-like building stands proudly and distinctively on the shore’s edge as ever it did. Walking into the hotel recently was like walking into a bit of history. Internally, it does look rather 80s; something of another age Monte Carlo glitz about the place which feels of its time and not contemporary but you know what, I loved it. It’s one of those hotels where you peer over the balcony railing on your floor and you can see the lobby below and also feel like your stomach is coming up. The rooms feel like spacious cabins in a cruise ship. You sit on the balcony and look out to sea. It’s very elegant and highly classy. Just little touches count like the gold rim around the bathroom mirror or the thick blue carpets in the bedrooms – beautiful. I started my trip with a visit to the pool cafe and had a hamburger and fries which was actually very good. The general manager recommended it and I can understand why. I walked around the lush lawns of the vast grounds outside the
back of the hotel and found the beach that was a hidden treat. Buoys cordoned off a section to keep out unwanted fish and the section offers unrivalled views of the city’s ever emerging sky line while you swim in the Arabian Gulf or get a glow or top up the tan on the sandy beach. Life guards keep an eye on everyone but also ensure that non-hotel guests cannot sneak in which preserves guests’ privacy. For dinner, I walked over to the health club which has a great Italian restaurant located at the back with plenty of tables to dine al fresco by the side of the sea. La Veranda is an Italian restaurant and its chef, Emanuele Sabatini, has an award-winning menu. I enjoyed their hearty four seasons pizza whilst bathing in the breeze and taking in the bright lights of the
great views of the Corniche. The lobby hosts breakfast in Al Hubara which essentially sits in the basin of the building with all the finery of the structure of the property all around you. A well-known British politician was sipping coffee at the table next to mine giving me the feeling that this is a place where dignitaries still stay. Breakfast offered a bit of everything from fresh fruit to cold cuts to hot items – a very satisfying start to the day. After breakfast was digested I went to the gym in the award-winning health club. My itinerary stated that I had to have a one-hour session with a personal trainer. He was a Bosnian instructor called Arman and he made me do various exercises for 30-second intervals. He called it functional training. Afterwards, I felt parts of my body I didn’t know I had! It was brutal but brilliant. The gym though is amazing and absolutely enormous with large windows letting light pour in and letting you get lost in the sea views as you wonder where an hour on the treadmill went. I had a massage scheduled shortly after my exhausting fitness

session which was the perfect antidote. A 60-minute Swedish massage did just the trick. My therapist, Ganga, told me it’ll be quite a relaxing massage and I said that’ll be fine by me. She wasn’t kidding. All my pressure points were identified and my tense muscles were worked on. A great end to the stay! Though tradition and old fashioned hospitality were the hallmarks of the stay, there were notable examples of innovation. Walk out the front door and through the gorgeously landscaped Hotel Park, you’ll find La Liga, which is a very cool sports bar where you can catch all the major football matches in the European leagues as well as great food to compliment it served up by Chef Juan. Our Friday night was punctuated by a boogie at the Back Yard. This event is held at the far end of the Sheraton’s vast grounds, quite literally in the hotel’s back yard. Visiting live bands and a DJ keep the party vibe going all night long. Fairy lights and wooden garden benches with shisha and the cool sea breeze all contribute to a fabulous evening and the best bit was not having to queue for an Uber after it but to crawl into the warm and comfy bed for an incredibly good night’s sleep. ✤ GO: CALL 4485 4444 FOR RESERVATIONS AND MORE INFORMATION. 56

Throughout the Canyon Walk, guests are enveloped in a modern design marvel, reinterpreting the natural beauty of Petra’s canyon with shard structures and natural tones that can also be seen throughout the hotel. LOBBY LIFE The hotel’s Living Room (the brand’s take on the traditional lobby) is a clubhouse for the modern traveller, showcasing a fusion of intimate and open areas, low seating and mood-setting lighting among architectural features that mirror Amman’s extraordinary cityscape. Elements of Bedouin weaving, flower pots, and locally designed pillows from the Jordan River Foundation (a non-profit focusing on child safety and community empowerment) provide modernised versions of common patterns, colors and shapes from the city. The space is complemented by modern art from Bahraini artist, Jamal A. Rahim that gives an edge of Middle Eastern influence and bright splashes of color alongside the work of Jordanian 60

Amman: There’s plenty in Amman to encourage you to linger a while before making it to Petra, the Dead Sea or Wadi Rum. The city holds many surprises for visitors. Discover its many art galleries and charming neighborhoods, spend your afternoon away and enjoy shisha on a chic cafe terrace, indulge your cravings on the region’s varied and delicious cuisine or enjoy a night out in one of its thriving local areas, pubs and live music venues. Modern shopping malls are increasingly abundant in Amman but open air souqs are what many travelers will remember the most. Amman enjoys great weather for much of the year and local people are very friendly. Wadi Rum: Don’t pass up an opportunity to stay at one of the many Bedouin guest camps, whose furnished tent accommodations are modest, clean, and comfortable. Feast on delicious grilled meats and vegetables. Don’t sleep in because a camel ride to watch the sunrise in Wadi Rum is an experience you’ll never forget. Petra: The magnificent and magical handcarved architecture of Petra is Jordan’s number one attraction. Today the Treasury (the Temple of the Sun in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) is the best-known feature in Petra. Hike or climb to the muchlarger and equally impressive monastery. The minerals of the Dead Sea have healing qualities and many people book retreats to help with ailments. This calm destination with its translucent azure waters makes the Dead Sea a hauntingly beautiful spot and incredibly relaxing spa resort. I
have flown with Turkish airlines a few times going to Europe via Istanbul and have always found the staff to be exceptionally friendly and warm. This trip was no acception. I was greated with a lovely smile and shown to my Business Class seat - right away offered something to drink, an extra blanket and my little onboard flight bag which contained a much required eye mask, toothbrush and earplugs. Before the flight took off, I was out like a light. Having rested comfortably, Istanbul Ataturk airport is the next thing that I see. Upon arrival, I headed straight to the Business Class arrivals lounge, to meet with our Turkish Airlines Host, Kemal. Whilst waiting, I scoffed my face with a fresh Turkish breakfast, containing different types of cheese, fresh fruit, eggs and freshly baked bread - topped off with endless cups of Turkish Tea. After breakfast at the arrivals lounge – we make our way to the Vialand Palace Hotel to rest and freshen up. Day 1: Our first stop exploring is Ortaköy, where we head for the Bosphorus tour. But first, we feul up on the famous Kumpir - which is a wood-fired baked potato. The waiter hands me a two-page list of toppings, I tick all the boxes and opt for all trimmings. After our quick lunch we head off on the boat; even though there was heavy rain for several hours, Istanbul carries a different kind of beauty with the dark clouds and historical backdrop. We have tea on board and take in the sites of this enthralling city. Once the tour is over, we have some free time, so I go hunting through the Ortaköy markets to see what goods I can buy and end up purchasing some fresh honey and sundried tomatoes. Once our bus arrives, we head straight to Nisantasi for dinner! We’re greated with the most magnificent view of Istanbul and take a seat for our grand supper. Our host has ordered for us all, so we know this is going to be huge. And, luckily, I have a big appetite! Our table was filled with mezzes, fresh breads, salads and grills. Lots of it. fact magazine

• WEEKEND ESCAPE
Day 2: We awake early for a tour of the hotel and then swiftly head into town for a tour of the Sultanahmet Camii (also known as the Blue Mosque). It is one of the most magnificent buildings in Turkey. It’s interior filled with Arabic calligraphy, giant antique lights and the most luxurious Turkish rugs. From here, we make our way to Topkapi Palace. A visit to the palace's opulent pavilions, jewel-filled treasury and sprawling harem gives a fascinating glimpse into their Ottoman lives. Filled with ottoman armour, swords and artifacts, this palace maintains an extensive collection of books and manuscripts in its library. The Topkapı Palace is notable not only for its architecture and collections but also for preserving the history and culture of the Ottoman Empire. Next up is the lively Kapalı çarşı (Grand Bazaar) in the Sultanahmet area where I haggled for some lovely handcrafted ceramics and prints of whirling dervish to take back home. You can also find lots of gold, fresh Turkish tea, antiques, rugs, ornaments and even furniture! After Stopping for a much-needed Turkish coffee and baklava for a pick me up, we headed to The Basilica Cister, not more than a 10 minute walk away. This is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul and once stored the city’s water. The cistern has the capacity to store 100,000 tons of water. It is virtually empty today with only a few feet of water lining the bottom and tourists admiring in awe. We then head over to Galata area, and have free time to wonder the streets of Galata and Istiklal Avenue and up towards Taksim Square. Galata has an array of quirky shops and independent boutiques, filled with local upcoming artists and designers. I didn’t get time to visit Galata Tower - but this is a must if you’re in the area. Istiklal Avenue is the most famous shopping street and district in Istanbul, hundreds of locals and tourists line the streets, and have all the latest fashion, tech and food to choose from. I get lost in a sea of people and the smells of chestnuts from the vendors lined up along the street – this is my sort of place! Day 3: After breakfast we check out and make our way to the Turkish Airlines training centre where we have a tour around the facilities and get to go on a few new simulators of their new aircrafts.

We then head to Ataturk airport and say bon voyage - but not before checking into the Turkish Airlines business class lounge. This place is like a shopping centre, it is in a world of its own and I guarantee no other lounge is like it. Because I had some time to spare, I booked in for a shower in their shower rooms - marble flooring, toliteries, towels and hair dryer are all provided - it was definitely worth the 45-minute wait! I felt invigorated and relaxed so I headed to the cinema room, layed in the huge recliner and had my popcorn - I must have dozed off before I awoke to some amazing smells. I followed my nose over to the pide counter and filled a mountain of pide onto my plate followed by a mixed grill, which was situated right next to it. Drool factor was over the charts. The Lounge also offers massage rooms, childrens play and gaming areas and whatever you want to drink, from ayran to black label - it’s all readily available and never empty. LET’S GET READY TO KINDLE Avid readers are in for a real treat with the new Kindle Paperwhite…
W
ith so many new and innovative products making their way into the gadget market every day, it is hard to determine which ones are definitely worth the moolah. From smartphones and e-readers to speakers and cameras - the options are endless. Making your selection process a whole lot easier, we decided to take the new and improved Kindle Paperwhite for a spin! A sleeker design, more storage, an updated processor and a waterproof design, the new Kindle Paperwhite takes all these essential features and makes them even better. While Kindle has steered clear of the various advanced technologies seen in many new gadgets, it has definitely improved. The fourth generation of the Paperwhite, it boasts a refined design that is smooth and unobtrusive. It has the same 6-inch, black and white, 300 ppi (pixels per inch) display as the previous generation, but with an additional LED light. Making your reading experience even more comfortable, the newest Kindle is 10 per cent thinner and lighter than the last Paperwhite. Ideal for some bathtub and pool reading, the new Paperwhite is also waterproof up to 2 meters for 60 minutes. Apart from a sophisticated design, the e-reader now ships with a minimum of 8 gigabytes of internal storage, double what it shipped before. While the processor has been updated, the new Paperwhite features the same amount of low-power
RAM as previous Kindle models. A feature taken from last year’s Kindle Oasis is audiobooks integration, enabling you to listen to your Audible titles on the e-reader using Bluetooth headphones or a Bluetooth speaker. You can easily upload them all to your Kindle Paperwhite and then connect to your device to listen to your books while you’re on the go. The software experience has also been enhanced and includes new features that will roll out to all Kindles. It includes Amazon’s long-standing Whispersync feature, which ensures your page location, bookmarks and highlights are synced across all of your devices with the Kindle app. But what makes the Paperwhite truly stand out is the new feature that allows you to custom name a preset with a certain font type and size. While Amazon’s Kindles aren’t as innovative as other new electronics in the market, it surely helps you indulge in the joy of reading without any distractions. The Paperwhite’s new lighter design, waterproofing and support for Audible definitely help catch up with the Oasis. If you’re looking for an e-reader with a mid-range look and feel that allows simple and efficient reading, the new Kindle Paperwhite should be right up your reading nook! ✤

PERUVIAN PERFECTION La Mar by Gastón Acurio at InterContinental Doha brings vibrant Peruvian flavours and exotic dishes to Doha’s gastronomy scene. FACT’s Marisela Paesano discovered the new dining hotspot, one plate at a time…

O
ffering a mix of indoor and outdoor seating, La Mar boasts spectacular sea views, along with a distinguished al fresco dining experience, set in an upscale casual atmosphere combining Peruvian elements with modern luxe décor. You can eat inside the contemporary, design-driven restaurant, with an open kitchen and lively ceviche bar or bask in the expansive terrace overlooking the Arabian Gulf and Doha’s skyline. We started our Peruvian culinary journey with Ceviche Clásico. Ceviche is a favourite dish of many in Peruvian cuisine, and is often the meal of choice for many locals in Peru. The coastal sensation is made with freshly caught seafood steeped in onion, chilli, and most importantly, lemon or lime juice, resulting in the fish appearing as “cooked”. As I was spooning up the Ceviche Clásico - bathed in a marinade that delivered chilli heat and citrus acidity in precisely calibrated doses - I knew why Chef Acurio is a rock star in Lima, and how he has managed to build a 31-restaurant empire in 12 countries. La Mar’s ceviche is indeed compelling. Gleaming tiles of fish bask in liquids so vivid and potent. I was persuaded, too, by a Tiradito Laqueado, sliced ahi tuna tataki in a small lake of passion fruit, leche de tigre and sesame oil sauce; it starts out Japanese before a sour nudge of passion fruit takes it in an unexpected, delicious direction. We also tried the causa limeña, a classic Peruvian cold entrée made of whipped potatoes and ají peppers, topped with king crab meat, avocado mousse, ikura and huancaina sauce. This is not a sophisticated dish but it sure tasted like home, bringing back so many memories of my beloved Latin-American region. My favourite main dish was a well-executed arroz con mariscos, rice with seafood. The rice had a pleasant texture and the dish combines rich flavors with plenty of fresh seafood. The portion is big enough for one person but I have to confess it was so dreamy I was tempted to order more. The Pescado a la Brasa was a grilled boneless whole fish, wrapped in banana leaves, the fish was also a hit, simply delicious and succulent – just perfect! The desserts were exceptionally good, we tried the suspiro loco, dulce de leche foam, crispy merengues and vanilla ice cream, this luscious delight was exquisite. If you give it a try, you won´t regret it. It´s quite an unforgettable treat! Peruvians are passionate about their national cocktail the pisco sour, made with egg whites, ice, 84

lime and sugar. They have an amazing selection of pisco sours on the cocktail list here. I encourage you to have at least two while there. They are delicious! Peruvian cuisine is one of the world’s most precious and vibrant cultural fusions. Celebrity-chef Gastón Acurio’s food reflects an innate historical fusion with an acquired modern and diverse refined style. I declare myself a big fan of Chef Acurio’s food and I am sure I’ll be a regular in no time! ✤

CUBAN FLAIR A recipe for success; Cuban bites and thirst-quenching drinks meet panoramic views at the recently-opened La Vista 55, perched high above on the 55th floor of InterContinental Doha The City. FACT’s Craig Ferriman was ready for a sky-high foodie adventure… fact magazine

• NEW IN TOWN
I
recently decided to get high with a little help from my friends. And I mean, really high! I got in the express lift at InterContinental Doha The City and didn’t stop until I was on the 55th floor. You ears might pop but, my word, it is worth it for the view in the newly-opened sky bar that is aptly called La Vista 55. The theme of this place is Cuban and that makes it unique in Doha. The authentic live band that plays music throughout the evening on the stage have flown in from Havana, specially. A Cuban DJ is on the way too! Funky disco lighting and a thatched curvy bar are notable refurbishments from what was previously Strata – a bar with everything but a theme. Back then, the menu of food and drinks was kind of endless and the view was great but the atmosphere was absent and the design fairly charmless. That’s all changed! Now, the menu is not exhaustive but quality is prioritised over quantity. Staff are Latino and the vibe is warmer. Our Venezuelan waitress, Lourdes, took great care of us and got us off to a good start with deliciously bespoke beverages from their happy hour menu, or should I say, La Hora Lorca! This is still very much a bar and not a restaurant but the tapas that they serve is really rather good. It is snack sized so won’t fill you up but they are perfect for sharing with friends on the table while sipping a cool drink. They look great and taste even better. One of the best presented tapas was a bowl of what looked like ice cream cones with plenty of goodness oozing out of the top. In fact, these cones were made of polenta and inside were diced avocados, cherry tomatoes and baby mozzarella dressed in basil pesto. The key is to ingest it in one bite and let a party commence on the palate as the multiple flavours explode in your mouth. The ceviche Cubano or Cuban ceviche comprises a fresh catch which is usually hammour, citrus marinade, red onion, green mango and avocado. It was remarkably refreshing. Other super snacks included the empanadas which featured Cuban-style shredded beef as
88
fact magazine
well as the ‘papas rellenas’ which are crispy mashed potato balls also stuffed with traditional beef. I’ll be quite honest and confess that I tried all the items on the menu so you can order them with the full satisfaction of knowing that my favourite bite was ‘tostones con camaron y pina’ which are plantain crackers that are topped with sautéed shrimp and pineapple. Just the perfect, delicious, comfort food to wash down with a fruity mocktail. Additionally, the venue has a floor upstairs where it is much more chilled and acts as more of a cigar lounge. Combine the music from the Cuban live band, the tasty tapas, an impressive array of drinks to choose from with an awesome view and might just be the newest popular hotspot for socialising in town. ✤

ITALIAN EXCELLENCE
Of the many things the local dining scene is good at, FACT’s Craig Ferriman often thinks that Italian restaurants aren’t one of them. Italians will regularly tell you that the best Italian food is served in Italy and that is probably true but, he was getting jaded at just how few good options there are to eat the great nation’s food here, until very recently that is. What changed his mind? A visit to Cucina at Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha… fact magazine
91
• FOODIE CORNER
C
ucina at the Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha exceeded all my expectations. It amplifies authenticity and offers a very warm and welcoming visit. Chef Claudio is himself an Italian which is a good start and is gregarious, charming and effervescent. His presence not only permeates the kitchen but percolates through the front of house too as he wanders around talking to diners, taking orders, serving up dishes, training staff and monitoring the kitchen. His passion is infectious and you can taste it in the food. The design of the restaurant is also very earthy and authentic too. From the outside, it looks like a classic Mediterranean farmhouse with open windows showing a glimpse of wooden caskets and candles. Despite the wooden floors and brown brick walls, the chairs are particularly comfortable and feel like armchairs at home! Chef Claudio brings Italian traditions to the kitchen and the food really was good. I’m told that this is where Italians in Doha like to eat and on my visit the restaurant was rather busy which in itself is a good sign. Chef Claudio did tell me that the key to good Italian cuisine is no more than four or five ingredients. Rather than bamboozling with multiple flavours, the simplicity of a few key items are what it’s all about. The carpaccio di polpo illustrates that point well. Thinly sliced octopus is delicately embedded in red and white cabbage with a tangy citrus and mint dressing. No more. No less. It’s a winning formula as we eat it up with real gusto. Similarly, the carpaccio di manzo is thinly sliced beef, parmagiano, Cipriani sauce with some rocket leaves on top. Simply served on a small plate and devoured quickly – VERY tasty. You might be surprised to read but I was pleasantly pleased to see that vegetarians are catered for at Cucina. The ravioli with spinach and ricotta is a notable highlight – moreish but not heavy. So too is the potato gnocchi with tomato sauce, burrata cheese and basil – this was our standout dish of the evening. The parmigiana from the antipasta section of the menu sounded a bit boring to me as I saw eggplant and glazed over but in fact it turned out to be SO delicious, I’m going to look out for it on the menu whenever I visit an Italian restaurant in the future. It was a layered and baked eggplant with some mozzarella, parmagiano, tomato sauce and basil – a classic dish, cooked perfectly. I figured I had to try their pizza so I opted for a funghi porcini which was a delicious thin crust 92
fact magazine
mushroom, mozzarella and scamorza pizza on a tomato base, and it was wonderful. Not too filling to leave you bloated, but fresh and yummy to satisfy all your cravings. Chef Claudio has greatly made his mark by quietly tinkering with the existing menu and improving the quality of the ingredients. I’d had a lot to eat at this point but couldn’t leave without trying his tiramisu. It was superb. All the oozing flavours I wanted to end this beautiful meal. Cucina is, simply, an excellent restaurant and well worth a visit. ✤

IT’S BUBBALICIOUS TIME
Everyone knows that there is no shortage of brunches in town. The list just gets longer and longer and we’re often asked what’s so different about them all. Aren’t they all just the same, is an oftrepeated refrain. No is the short answer. They vary wildly, as FACT’s Craig Ferriman discovers at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa’s award-winning Bubbalicious Brunch… fact magazine
95
• BRUNCH FOCUS
T
he Bubbalicious Brunch gets its name for reasons you can probably guess. It is actually a highly sociable brunch. Avoid it at your pleasure if you’re desiring a quiet afternoon sitting in a soulless corner somewhere with no atmosphere as, here, you’ll be incredibly entertained. This is a rather raucous affair. When I pitched up there recently, I asked the maitre’d on arrival just how many diners they were expecting that Friday afternoon; 350 she said. In fact, they can take as many as 400 and most Fridays are next to full. The venue was packed and spilled over into the outdoor space with folk in the mood to really enjoy the fact that it’s the weekend and the weather is getting cooler. Though sat inside, we moved in and out quite frequently as curiosity bit, taking in the multitude of different offerings from the vast buffet. Whilst the core spread was indoors, there were quite a lot of food stands located outside too plus beverage stations that served up quirky drinks with fruit. One truck called the Lab Bar looked like a chemistry laboratory with multi-coloured vapours emanating from within so there was plenty to capture the imagination not to mention insta story-potential aplenty. The brunch is located on the lobby level and the outdoor space backs onto the pool area. The hotel is able to capitalise on the wealth of culinary talent across the hotel’s food venues. Around 20 chefs are responsible for getting this brunch to service. The Thai station offers dishes from its award-winning Sabai Thai restaurant and the meat on display is courtesy of the excellent steakhouse upstairs called Hunters Room & Grill. There is sushi as you walk in that is not exceptional but a decent way to start the afternoon. The Turkish section is particularly good. On top of that, there is a live pasta station plus Mexican food, sweet treats, crepes and rather good Indian food as I discovered tucking into a chicken tikka makhani – delicious! Since the end of summer, the ever-popular brunch has revamped things and introduced a new layout that includes three new funky food trucks and three bars outside. These really caught my attention. The trucks offered freshly prepared tacos, live pizzas and even hot dogs where you could add in sauces as you liked. The theme is not haute cuisine but you’re never going to get that at a buffet anyway. This is designed for larger groups with mass socialising between people and free-flowing good food and drinks. A live band plays outdoors and their sound is piped inside via the internal speakers, radiating a very positive vibe and getting everyone in the mood for a bit of a boogie. The live band is changed each week and a DJ takes over the decks later on once the party is in full swing. 96
