hen you hear the word “love” what do you think of ? For me, it’s family, friends, memories of good times, and the excitement of what’s to come. But, mostly, it’s the love of good food and my favourite TV shows (who’s excited for Game of Thrones to start… two months to go!). The point is, love means different things to different people, so as we step into February, the “official” month of love, make sure you’re celebrating exactly how you want to! FACT is here to help you make arrangements for Valentine’s Day; we’ve divided this issue into three sections – for him, for her, and the usual stuff ! In each, you’ll find gift ideas, dining deals, fashion picks, beauty must-haves and everything in between, to make sure that you and your other half have an unforgettable V-Day this year! Ladies, your advice starts on p29 and gents should turn to p45 for inspiration. Carrying on the path of what love means to us, it means celebrating this awesome city that we live in! For the secondyear running, we bring you the annual FACT Dining Awards, a celebration of the best in Doha’s food and beverage scene. You can check out all the nominees on p22 – did your favourites make the cut? Stay tuned, as online voting will begin very soon! One of my favourite features this month is Writings on the Wall, showcasing a husband and wife duo, a.k.a Graff iti Lovers, based in the UAE. We bring their colourful talent and message straight from the streets to our pages (p62). If you’re planning on whisking your partner away on a romantic getaway, check out Solace in Salalah on p77, and decide for yourself if this isn’t one of the most breathtaking destinations in the region (it absolutely is!). I’ll be spending Valentine’s with Netflix, my one and only real love right now. Couples, make it special and have a great one. Singletons, enjoy the freedom and relax. Big love to you all ☺

For the first time ever in Qatar, The Doha Marriott Hotel, brings you the exclusive event, Café del Mar. Enjoy the spectacular Doha sunset whilst listening to the cool beats of JustGiles, The Long Player and Laura O’Shea warming things up from 4pm, with headliner, Resident Café Del Mar DJ, Deep Josh, hitting the decks from 9pm. Café del Mar opened its doors for the first time on June 20, 1980 in Ibiza. The concept was simple; to play music to the sunsets. In the early days, Café del Mar was a prominent meeting point among the locals and an origin of inspiration for artists and authors alike. By the 1990’s it had become 16

The Misfit Ray

MY
Last year was undoubtedly the year of the fitness tracker; almost every wrist you looked upon had some form of sports monitor around it and so, naturally, it has been carried through the New Year as a must have item. Whether you’re sports mad, the occasional runner, or simply just trying to improve your general fitness and wellbeing, the Misfit Ray could be the perfect gift you want this Valentine’s Day…
At first glance, the Misfit Ray has huge appeal, it’s unlike other trackers in the way that it looks more like a piece of jewellery; not overstated, but something that could sit nicely beside your watch without being noticeable as a fitness tracker. The colour options, either black or rose gold, only add to the sleek aesthetic that is bound to gain plenty of fans. So what does it do? Well, you’ve got all the normal features that come with any fitness tracker; automatic sleep and fitness tracking, water resistance up to 50m and a silent alarm to wake you, but the Ray has quite a few cool extras too. If you’ve been sat still for too long you’ll get a nudge to remind you to be more active, and when you’ve perked up you’ll get dedicated tracking for a series of activities including running, swimming, cycling, yoga

and dancing. But, by far the coolest part of the Ray is that it works with the Link platform so you can turn off lights, change music and even take selfies – yes! In terms of practicality, it’s small and lightweight, measuring 38mm long and weighing in at just 8g. The battery life is around six months and these can be changed once they’ve expired. Users will also have the option to wear this as a necklace on the days they don’t care for wrist wear. The only cons to the Ray are that, unlike previous Misfit trackers, it doesn’t tell the time and notifications are less prominent. But, if it’s something stylish and practical that you need, with some of the most up-to-date technology on the market, then make sure the Misfit Ray is at the top of your must haves and gift list.

Big Screen Pride and Prejudice and Zombies What’s it about:
Based on the 2009 parody novel by Seth GrahameSmith, this is a mashup of Jane Austen’s classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th century England, combined with a gruesome twist in the form of an army of undead zombies.
Director: Burr Steers cast: Lily James, Sam Riley, Lena Headey Why it’s worth watching? Hot chicks in ball gowns with knives stowed in their stockings – erm, what’s not to like? This isn’t like any old Austen adaptation, bar the fancy balls, horseback riding and picture-perfect homes; this is the story of a feisty heroine, Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) who is a master of martial arts and weaponry (as you’d expect in 19th century England…), and the handsome Mr. Darcy, a fierce zombie killer, and the essence of upper class prejudice. As the zombie outbreak intensifies, they must swallow their pride and join forces on the blood-soaked battlefield. Austen purists will hate it, but everyone else will dig it for the slicing and dicing of zombie hoards - there’s nothing more badass than a group of strong, beautiful sisters slaying their way out of zombie danger! If you’re looking for something fun and gory to watch on V-day, this one ticks all the boxes.

Director: Harold Ramis cast: Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliot, Stephen Tobolowsky What’s in it for guys? Every guy’s icon Bill Murray puts on a hilariously winning performance here as TV meteorologist lout Phil Connors, who provides a string of comic moments during his repetitive Groundhog Day plight. The star and his co-cast mates are perfectly in sync here!
What’s in it for girls? Ladies, pucker up for a gooey romantic centre which is revealed in the second half of the movie when Phil begins to fall for his producer Rita (Andie Macdowell), and a genuinely sweet love story emerges, awww! 50

The Myo Motion Control Armband Is this the future, or is it just a gimmick? FACT tries out an interesting and relatively new concept to see if all you fellas out there will benefit from it, for everyday use.
The Myo Gesture Control Armband, developed by Thalmic Labs, applies very cutting edge technology to everyday tasks on our electronic devices, and looks like something from a sci-fi movie. Using a combination of motion sensors and electromyography (say THAT rapidly ten times after a few beverages…), which is the concept of reading electrical activity created by muscles, the armband translates it to commands that can be understood by everyday electronic devices such as laptops and TVs. As opposed to the motion detection technology that most devices, such as the Xbox Kinect use, the Myo Armband reads electronic signals from the muscles in your forearm and hand motions to control the devices via Bluetooth. When you first use the armband, you’ll have to use a series of instruction videos to get it calibrated, and this takes a bit of time. You have to give the armband a little while to register the electrical signals in your arm, and then perform specific movements to get it up and running. 52
fact magazine
Once you start using it, you’ll then have to learn the specific movements that form each command. For example, with iTunes, you wave left or right to skip a track forwards or backwards, or roll your fist to adjust volume. Once you get the hang of things, it actually feels quite cool waving your hand and having the laptop respond. However, this is also where you’ll discover the device’s limitations. It can only read a range of motions that emit a very specific electrical signal, and these are finger taps, left or right waves, opening your hand, making a fist, and any up, down, left, right, and roll movements. This means that you won’t be writing words in the air, and you probably can’t use it on the treadmill as the running motion will confuse it (not that we tried – we don’t exercise!). There is hope though, as app developers have been working on it since the device we previewed a couple of years ago, and as a result there are a number of applications it can be used with, such as Netflix, Spotify, YouTube, Minecraft, and even a range of drones that can be controlled by the armband. We see it being most useful for people who do activities that involve getting both hands dirty, like cooking, mechanics or arts and craft, as you can watch video tutorials or listen to music, and control either without getting your devices grubby. VERDICT: At the moment, the Myo Gesture Control Armband is still quite limited in its applications, and it’s not the omnipotent control-all device we were hoping it would be. Having said that, like early Androids, the list of compatible software is growing steadily, and we see this becoming a big deal in years to come. Just not yet…

arts INTERVIEW
S
ya One was raised on the streets and lines of the UK and now lives and breathes the endless cultures of Dubai. He’s been a graffiti writer for nearly 20 years. As a sign writer by trade, Sya moved into letter construction and colour combination, looking at the never-ending styles and realms of what a letter can do. “I became interested in letters early on,” Sya recalls. “Around the same time that subway art came out, and I was mesmerised by what a letter could do. This was also around the time I got into graffiti. “Later on, I became a sign writer and, for me, the love of letters grew once I started understanding the construction of a letter and what you could do with it,” he explains. Sya’s graffiti writing is known in particular for its old-school, easilyreadable, large, lazy, and brightly coloured letters. It’s easy to see in his vibrant work that Sya is passionate about the power of letters. So, how would he describe his artistic style? “Lazy,” he says. “The letters that I have worked on and I’m still working on are kind of laid back and chill, with bright colours. A friend told me that sometimes it looks like my letters are talking to each other or have there own stance.” We take Sya down memory lane and ask how he first got into graffiti. ➻ fact magazine

arts interview
“I’ve always been into drawing since I was a kid and then when I reached school it was the only thing I was interested in,” he reminisces. “Drawing was the only thing I could set my mind to and get lost in. I was taught how to draw by my amazing art teacher who could see that I was not fussed with Maths and English, and that art was really my thing,” Sya continues. “He taught me the basics. The first things that I drew, which I was really happy about, was a car and a portrait, I gave it my all.” There are still many out there who view graffiti in a negative light, especially as, around the world, many take to the walls in retaliation to political and social injustice. It is true that graffiti was once seen as just a punishable act of pavement protest, but as Sya’s and many other artists’ work proves, it has grown to be so much more. We were intrigued to know that for anyone who still sees graffiti as a form of vandalism, what would Sya have to say? “You are correct, the essence of graffiti is vandalism, BUT you need to look beyond that and see the passion that all the writers in the world have,” Sya explains. “Ignore the ones that are in it for the fashion status and likes on Facebook and Insta, the true writers have dedicated there lives to this craft, me included, and have spent countless hours practicing in sketch books; looking for spots to paint; and hiding in bushes waiting to paint. “We are loyal to this - paint almost flows through our veins. Nowadays graffiti is more acceptable and the days of ‘illegal’ work is pretty much done, but I never forget the roots,” he says. When working on a piece, graffiti writing requires time, dedication and patience, but knowing when to stop, and when a piece is finished, is also a skill in itself. This is something that Sya knows all too well. “Stopping is the hardest thing to do, whilst painting,” he says. “But once you have been doing it for as long as I have, you kind of just know when to stop. “It’s hard to explain. You can ruin a perfectly good piece by going that bit too far, or not doing enough. It’s a fine line.” When it comes to something so freespirited and bold as graffiti and street art, 66

You are correct, the essence of graffiti is vandalism, BUT you need to look beyond that and see the passion that all the writers in the world have.” it can be difficult to share this talent with the wider community, in a completely positive way. However, Sya and Steffi manage to do this by taking part in projects and initiatives that allow them to inform and inspire people.
“We take part in such activities so that the masses can see what we do, and how we do it,” Sya tells us. “It keeps the scene moving and hopefully inspires the next generation of graffiti writers or street artists. “It’s good to see people vibing out on what you’re doing and learning about we do,” he continues. “I like talking to people when I’m painting at an event. Whether they are positive or negative, it’s good to talk to them and find out their views on what we do.” And on a final note, Sya’s advice to upcoming artists is to “practice, practice, practice, and do it for yourself.” His biggest tip is to “stay off the internet.” Why? Because much like both Sya and Steffi have found their own style, he urges other graffiti writers and street artists to dedicate themselves to the craft, saying: “Don’t do it because it’s cool, do it because you’ve fallen in love with it.” ✤

teffi is a British graffiti and stencil artist based in Dubai. From the inspiration and memory of her late Scottish Grandmother (who always wore bows) to the place where she was born (Bow, East London), Steffi created an image through a graffiti “bow” tag that represented her whole being - past, future, and present. “It’s a symbol that means a lot to me,” Steffi says. “Even my engagement ring has been made up of diamonds shaped in my bow tag signature. First and foremost, it reminds me of my granny who always wore bows. Also, I was born in Bow, East London. Lastly, like my granny, I really love bows and how they make things smart and dressy,” she explains. It started off with painting simple graffiti bow tags and led Steffi on an adventure with spray paint, creating larger and more complex real life stencil pieces, portraits, freehand graffiti bows, letters, and abstract pieces. She has created the largest piece of aerosol art in the UAE along with creative partner and husband, graffiti artist, Sya One. “Sya and I met here in Dubai, painting a graffiti wall that used to exist at Dubai Festival City,” Steffi tells us. “We were pretty much inseparable from the moment we met and we’ve had so much fun sharing the hobby we love. It’s been a complete adventure for both of us.” ➻ fact magazine

Really we don’t need much; just spray paint, nozzles/capsdifferent types depending on what paint effect we are trying to get. and wall space.lots of wall space.”
In terms of tools and technique, there isn’t much that Steffi needs to let out her creative side. “Really we don’t need much; just spray paint, nozzles/caps - different types depending on what paint effect we are trying to get - and wall space - lots of wall space. “I joke with people that Sya does not get out of bed unless the wall size is five metres wide or more! If I’m doing a stencil then it takes more preparation time as I hand cut the stencil – but then the spraying time is really quick. These days I’m much happier going freestyle and not using stencils,” Steffi says. She defines herself as more of a street artist than a graffiti writer – two terms that, she believes, have completely
different meanings. “They’re different both in terms of their art and the psychology behind the art,” Steffi explains. “In a nutshell, graffiti writers are about freehand, stylised letter form with spray paint, whilst Street Artists are about painting imagery more pictorial work - using a variety of different mediums, although spray paint is usually the main medium.” For anyone viewing Steffi’s work, and certainly what we were pleasantly surprised to learn, is that Steffi only picked up a spray can at the age of 35. She did A-level Art at college in the UK but then completely forgot about any kind of creative activity for 17 years! “I’d always loved looking at street art in London,” Steffi recalls. “But I had no idea about what graffiti was. I then started tagging my bow stencil and things developed from there.” Steffi has since come a long way and she tells us why she loves producing graffiti so much. “It amuses me. Nothing more, nothing less. I love the interaction of being out on the street, painting, having a laugh with people walking by and other people I’m painting with. I really don’t enjoy painting on a piece of canvas, I find it completely boring!” Spoken like a true street artist! And what about the street art scene
here in the UAE? “Our little scene is growing, which is great,” Steffi says. “The problem is that there is nowhere to, legally, paint our work in public without it being a planned commission piece or event. “It’s frustrating because there are so many walls here that could do with some love, such as in Al Quoz. Dubai has the ability to host the world’s greatest graffiti and street art event - it just needs some imagination with the spaces that could be used so brilliantly,” she adds. As Steffi and Sya’s mission is to promote graffiti as an art form in the UAE, what advice does Steffi have for budding artists? “Be passionate and determined,” she says. “Learning to use spray paint is the greatest thing I’ve ever done and I’ve had so much fun with doing street art. “It can be terribly frustrating at times getting to grips with “can control” but you will always progress if you try hard and remain curious to push your limits!” ✤
FUN FACTS • Both Sya and Steffi are currently Brand Ambassadors for Adidas Originals. These brand tie-ups give the duo a platform to promote their work to a wider audience – locally, regionally and internationally. • The duo has painted the largest indoor piece of graffiti art in the UAE at the Aloft Hotel in Abu Dhabi. • Graffiti Lovers has also painted at Katara Cultural Village in Doha, live at DIFC Art Night, at the opening of The Emaar Dubai Pavilion Downtown and for a host of major global brands, such as Adidas, Gap, G-Shock Casio, Nokia, Perrier, and Sony. • If Sya was stranded on an island for a year, he’d take a sketch pad, a pencil and a scalpel for company.

KNOW YOUR TERMS BLACK BOOK
WILDSTYLE
GETTING UP
A graffiti artist’s sketchbook – doesn’t have to be black. Often used to sketch out and plan potential graffiti, and to collect tags from other writers.
It’s all about interlocking letters and elaborate symbols, almost threedimensional type. Basically, it’s graffiti with text so stylised, only experts or practitioners can read the name.
To paint and build up a reputation. When other writers see your work in multiple locations, you’re “getting up”.
PIECE Short for “masterpiece.” A large and labour-intensive graffiti painting, usually with at least three colours.
TAG A stylised name or signature, usually done in one colour with various materials, such as a marker or an aerosol spray can, often freehand. A tag is often done in a colour that contrasts the background; a person who tags is known as a writer or bomber and they will tag on or beside their pieces – like a sign on the artwork.
STRAIGHT LETTERS Pretty much the opposite of wildstyle, this is a direct, blocky, more readable and simpler style of graffiti, often with only two colours, and can be read by anyone.
CHARACTER When graffiti brings to life an animated, cartoonish, cute or creepy character that serves as a signature or visual shorthand. Many artists invent a wholly new being that can be out up on its own or as part of a bigger narrative.
MURAL A huge piece, usually on a legal wall. It could be done by one graffiti writer, a group or a whole crew, and it could depict one single scene or be part of a series of connected images.
STENCIL A phrase, image or both, designed and cut into heavy paper or cardboard, then spray-painted onto a wall. Stencils can be one-offs or can be used repeatedly to make the work of one artist or writer recognisable.
INSTALLATION Can be temporary or permanent work, usually commissioned, which
means the piece is site-specific, and often 3D or sculptural. An installation can combine various techniques, some could have political agendas, be part of a big event and usually include something innovative for the people to see.
LEGAL WALL Places where graffiti writers can legally put up pieces. This can be on houses, office blocks, apartment buildings etc. Legal walls have helped bring about the transformation of graffiti into public art.
ROLLER A work done with a roller brush. The brush’s long handle enables artists to paint in hard-to-reach or tricky spots. Most rollers consist of block-letter tags or phrases, sometimes with drop shadows or intentional drips. fact magazine

Less than a three-hour flight from Doha, and yet far removed from the over-the-top glitz and soaring skyscrapers, Salalah is the perfect weekend destination when you need a break from the fake. FACT’s Chelsea Copenhaver went to experience this beautiful destination…
I
’m sure by now that most of us living in the Gulf have more than a passing familiarity with the charms of nearby Oman – whose rich and vibrant history is only surpassed by its natural treasures. Whether you desire picture perfect white sandy beaches, arid mountains, golden dunes, or wadis dotted with crystal clear pools, you won’t have to go far, to find one all to yourself in this country that has been deemed the Jewel of Arabia. Indeed, Oman has been much touted as of late as an up-and-coming tourist destination, and the effects can certainly start to be seen in the capital city, Muscat. However, getting off the beaten tourist trail is, as always, highly rewarding in Oman, and nowhere more so than in the Southern Dhofar region. Well known for its annual khareef (a colloquial Arabic term for monsoon), Dhofar and its chief port city, Salalah, is the only place in the Gulf that experiences an annual monsoon season, and its mist shrouded hills tend to be a big draw for heat stricken GCC residents between the months of July and September. However, Salalah enjoys a pleasant climate year round and the residual effects of the khareef create a dazzling pocket of green in a sea of dust. ➻ fact magazine

Salalah itself was a prosperous trading port of frankincense in the 4th century BCE and is the traditional seat of Oman’s Sultan, as well as being the second largest city in Oman. With all of this in mind as I boarded my Oman Air flight to Salalah, I must admit that I was more than excited to spend a weekend away from the gruelling traffic, bright lights, and hectic pace of the city. During the comfortable and well serviced journey, I amused myself with visions of swaying palm trees, waves gently crashing on endless beaches, and a sky-full of glittering stars. My visions of unspoilt nature turned out to be quite precise, however I didn’t need to sacrifice any creature comforts to enjoy it as I was spending my weekend at Salalah’s newest and grandest resort – the Salalah Rotana Resort. The Salalah Rotana Resort was opened in March 2014 and boasts 400 rooms and suites spread around manmade Venetian waterways. Set on a stunning 8.2 kilometre beach that is the highlight of the property, the resort is built in traditional Omani architecture tastefully accentuated with elements of the surrounding rugged beauty. I arrived late in the evening and was warmly greeted and whisked off to get acquainted with my Premium Ocean Front Suite, my home for the next two days. The Suite was truly a slice of paradise, decorated in a minimalist Omani style, with a large bedroom, a living area, kitchen, two bathrooms, and an ocean-facing furnished veranda. The bedroom was impressive but warmly inviting, with a vaulted clay ceiling and a bed carved from desert rock. Carved wooden windows opened to the beach and I promptly fell asleep to the sound of the waves, practically at my doorstep. This is certainly a unique sensation in the GCC, despite the many beaches. After the kind of deep restorative sleep that can only be had in that special silence found in a natural setting, I started my morning early with breakfast on the veranda, ordered from the extensive room service menu, and ate 80

with an unhindered view of the white sand beach. After a leisurely stroll, I set out to explore some of what Salalah has to offer to the traveller. Highlights included the Sultan’s marbled Palace, the traditional souk in old Salalah, Mughsail Beach and Marneef Cave, famous for its blowholes. However, simply driving around Salalah is half the pleasure, as everywhere you look provides a new experience for the senses. There are palm tree-lined roads with open air shops selling fresh young coconuts, and spectacular viewpoints over untouched white beaches lapped by the strikingly turquoise Indian Ocean. One can gape at rugged peaks with twisted, yet noble frankincense trees growing improbably out of the rock, whose peeling bark fills the air with a nostalgically ancient smell. Venture to sweeping beaches whose only sunbathers are camels, who, keeping in line with the famous Omani hospitality, are very friendly and approachable. There is wonder to be found everywhere you go in Salalah, and all of this with hardly another tourist in sight. Further inland one can explore the many wadis and green mountains so iconic of Salalah, and around the khareef, waterfalls as well. It is a trekker’s paradise and also well appreciated for the variety and scope of wildlife and bird viewing. After a day of such adventure, I was happy to return to the hotel for some pampering at Zen the Spa, a Rotana concept that focuses on holistic healing with a touch of luxury. I was treated to the signature massage and after a thorough consultation with the therapist; she went to work easing out the knots and tension of modern day living. Although quite a massage enthusiast and someone who believes religiously in spoiling myself, I can honestly say that this was one of the best massages I have ever experienced. I left feeling my tension spots relieved, however not weighed down or groggy, but rather refreshed and energetic. So energetic in fact, that I elected to go for a swim in the sea, which was not your average Arabian Gulf floating session. ➻ fact magazine

“After another peaceful night under the stars, the next day brought with it another essential Salalah adventure: Dolphin watching.”

The beach at the Salalah Rotana Resort, much to my delight has waves, and somewhat large ones at that, and getting out past the break is no easy feat. However, there is nothing like bobbing in a gently rolling sea and until I had to swim back, I enjoyed watching a stunning orange sunset from the water. Dinner was served at Silk Road, Salalah Rotana resort’s signature dining concept, with a perched view over the resort and an extensive menu incorporating cuisine from along the traditional Silk Road. Luckily, the servers are well educated about what is on offer, as after perusing the large menu, I couldn’t make up my mind and asked for recommendations, which I was very satisfied with. After another peaceful night under the stars, the next day brought with it another essential Salalah adventure: Dolphin watching. Around the ocean, a company specialising in dolphin sighting tours, as well as fishing and other marine activities, was to be my host for today, and we set off to observe these spectacular mammals enjoying their natural habitat. Around the ocean has the utmost respect for the dolphins and is careful not to disturb or lure them. Even so, the fun loving creatures are far from shy and we spend hours watching them swimming and playing. We were even given the chance to swim in the ocean, and while the dolphins won’t come closer than several meters, it was still an exhilarating experience and a highlight of my trip to be swimming so close to them. I was pleased to see that Salalah had certainly lived up to its fabled natural beauty and of course, was not lacking in the hospitality that is so characteristic and has been recognised for hundreds of years of the Omanis, well captured by the scenic resort. Indeed, Dhofar may yet be one of the last places to capture the Arabia of the romantic imagining – a place where you can feel transported in time, at peace with nature, and yet completely at ease in the knowledge that you are in complete safety. ✤

Hi Laura! Tell us more about your involvement as a DJ at Society Lounge? I joined Society in November when it opened. I came back to Doha from Abu Dhabi. I was approached and asked if I would like to be the new resident at this stunning venue. Currently I DJ five to six nights a week and play different genres of music. Everything from funk and soul to house and even some arabic house music. I also help management bring and book artists. What do you enjoy most about sharing music with Doha’s party crowd? I enjoy playing in Doha, and I do try and play music that you don’t hear on the radio. But also at the same time it is familiar in some way. People do appreciate hearing new/different songs. It is nice to to think that if even one person goes away with a new love for house that I play, then I’m happy! Describe the party scene in Doha... Everyone has different tastes. Everyone likes different music. Some people like hip hop and commercial music, some people like trance and progressive house, and some like house tracks with vocals on. I just try and concentrate on my venue and making our clientele dance, rather than what everyone else is doing. Saying that, it would be nice if people were a little bit more open minded, and didn’t expect to hear what is on the radio when they go out, as generally this is what 88

gets requested. As DJs we look for new tracks, that we think we think will fire you up! Just because you don’t know it, doesn’t mean you wont like it. Listen, dance and enjoy! What keeps you motivated to keep DJing? I have been DJing nearly 15 years now. I have a connection with the music, and the music connects me with the people. I love making people happy by dancing. Even if it’s one dude at the back going crazy. You are connecting with him and he will go away after having a great night. Music touches us all in different ways. And there is nothing better than seeing hundreds of people dancing and losing themselves in the moment, as you’re creating it. Describe your DJing style... I never plan a set, and never have. I don’t even know what my first song will be. I walk into

the venue, feel the energy, see the people, and take it from there. At Society, I regularly start with funk and soul- even Frank Sinatra in early hours (as sometimes I play for five hours), by the end of the set it will be more tech house, jackin house, and old classic, which I love playing. When you play something someone has not heard for years and you see their reaction, it’s priceless! So I would say my style is funky, soulful, uplifting house with a groove - that is what I love to play. What’s the most challenging thing about being a DJ? The most challenging thing, I’d say, is sometimes you have to be a psychologist to lots of people - it’s not an easy task. Sometimes, the energy of the venue or club can feel “off ” and people may not be into it, so I will be trying to work out what works for them – it’s a bit of trial and error. I test certain tracks and see their reaction and take it from there. We all have different taste in music, so you have to try and make sure as many people as possible are happy. What’s coming up for you, for the rest of 2016? 2016, I hope, will be more fun and shenanigans at Society! Great parties and artists are lined up for the next few months. So watch this space! I will just continue doing what I love to do. Playing music that makes me happy – and makes you happy. Happy new year Doha - make it a good one!

AIR Remote for Apple TV for Android Every now and then, you realise that you need a thing, and lo-and-behold! You find that it is, in fact, a thing, and you acquire it and make your life better. And so it was when we were watching a movie on our MacBook plugged into the TV, and the only Apple Remote in the house was being used elsewhere. “I wonder…” we thought to ourselves, and a quick search on the Play Store turned up this, the AIR Remote for Apple TV (but also for Macs and Macbooks) for Android. Within seconds, we had it downloaded to our Galaxy S6 and ready to use. It functions just like an Apple Remote, via the infrared on your phone. It’s amazing. The only downside on the FREE version is the advert every time you open it, but if you find that too annoying the PRO version is only $3.99!
The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land For fans of the series, or any fan of RPG, strategy and tactical gameplay, this is one to check out. Loosely based on the plot of the TV show, the game flows through a series of the show’s sets, from camps to the prison and more. You complete missions with turn-based gameplay to collect supplies and find other survivors (also based on the TV show’s characters) with which to build up your base. During a mission, in each turn a character gets two action points, one to use on a movement to a different spot, and one for an attack. You select characters for each mission based on their strengths, and use strategy to ensure the success of your missions, whilst limiting casualties. There’s an element of strategy, role-playing and also puzzlesolving to each mission, and it’s highly addictive!

CITY RIDES
A loud, brash, growling luxury CUV coupe from the MercedesBenz ‘mentalist’ division, AMG, the GLE 63 S offers the fun of a premium sports car, and the practicality of a large hatch… Late last year Mercedes-Benz launched the AMG GLE 63 S – a direct, in-your-face challenge to the BMW X6 M in a very niche segment that right now literally only comprises these two performance CUV coupes. Mercedes arrive a little late to the game, as BMW are on their second generation now, but given the wild success of the X6, it was only a matter of time before Mercedes decided to get in on the action. So, how have they faired? Well, for starters, the GLE 63 S boasts a delicious big biturbo V8 that roars and 92
fact magazine
snarls like a whipped lion. You’ll have a grin from ear to ear every time you punch the throttle – your neighbours will hate you, but you won’t care a jot. The 5.5l V8 puts out 577hp through the excellent seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission, which boasts lightning-fast gear changes. And despite its size and high stance, it really feels like a sports car, with huge amounts of grip and a 40/60 front-rear torque split helping it get round corners. Even in normal drive mode there’s aggressiveness to the throttle that makes
it feel like it just wants to race, ALL the time. For petrol heads like us, it was a delight, but I can imagine it might scare the more timid driver. Like any AMG, it’s not for the faint-hearted! The electric steering is excellent – many lament the spread of electric steering for it’s lack of feedback and precision, but the GLE’s steering feels as precise as a surgeon’s scalpel. Having said all that, there is a fair amount of body roll to this CUV coupe, with the front dipping under heavy braking, and the car really sitting on its haunches when you floor it from standstill. In doing so, however, you’ll be hitting 100km/h in about four seconds, so you won’t really think about it too much! There also could have been more feel to the brakes, which felt a little soft. Though the exterior styling, we feel, is going to polarise opinions, it’s going to appeal to enough people to make it a success, much like the X6. However,
CITY RIDES
on the interior there will be no debate at all – it’s superb. Stylish and inviting as only a Mercedes can be, and despite the coupe roofline, there’s decent room in the rear seats that all but the tallest among us will feel comfortable in. Because of the sloping roofline there is a slight issue with rear visibility when parking, but this is largely addressed with the excellent rear and 360° topdown parking cameras which guide you into any spot with amazing accuracy. There is also an impressive amount of boot space, making the GLE a viable family car option. The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe is going to straddle two worlds nicely – it’ll appeal to a younger crowd who want something sporty with SUV dimensions, but it will also satisfy people with families who want both excitement AND practicality. This is a car you can cover real distance in, and enjoy every minute of the drive! ✤ fact magazine

What is street food? If you find yourself asking this question, let us fill you in! Street food is exactly that; tasty, ready-to-eat food and drink that is available in public spaces, such as at a food fair or from a vendor on the street or a market. Typically, this kind of food is sold from a portable stall or cart. So, what makes it special? Street food has the power to make or break a place, for example, it is usually where you’ll find authentic home-style, or unusual and unique recipes, cooked in minutes for you to enjoy. People go for street food for a number of reasons; it’s quick, usually inexpensive, and in many countries it’s a way of sampling local flavours in an exotic setting. It’s also a great way to experience new cuisines, and if it’s street food at home, then you’re supporting small local businesses too. Now, how do you bring this diverse yet definitive food concept to one of Doha’s top hotels, keeping things simple and fun? Chef Oliver Weber has the answer! He and the Doha Marriott Hotel culinary team have put together a Street Food evening, taking place every Thursday, where diners are truly able to experience an around-the-world journey with every bite. “That’s the beauty of this hotel, all the restaurants are lined up with this hall in the middle, and they all represent different countries and different flavours,” Chef Oliver says. “When I started to think about the concept, I put together all of my experiences and 98

inspirations from all over the world, and that’s how the street food theme came about.” The surrounding is casual with different stations set up for each cuisine – much like a vendor-style setting. You’re encouraged to try the food there and then, much like eating from the streets, where plates are not the norm. Instead, you’ll be given a tray and you can walk around to each station, tell them what you want, watch it being prepared in front of you, and then it’s wrapped up and ready to go – JUST like they do on the streets! “I love travelling,” Chef Oliver tells us. “I think I’ve visited around 60 countries up until now, and I can tell you that if

you really want to try their authentic cuisine, the streets is the place to go. This is where you really get an insight into what that country has to offer,” he adds. Each of Doha Marriott’s restaurants takes part with a live cooking station. That means that you can savour everything from Asian cuisine to Indian
foodie favourites, and delicious offerings of Seafood as well as the Latin flavours of Mexico. Chef Oliver says: “It’s a concept that no one is doing right now in Doha and that is what sets us apart from our competitors. “At the minute, this is my baby,” he continues. “Every hotel has different plans and events going on, and with time they can get lost. So, we decided to stick to one thing this year and do it big!” ✤ GO: Street Food at Doha Marriott Hotel takes place every Thursday from 6.30pm to 11.30pm. VENUE REVIEW
T
his is not your typical Indian dining destination; Royal Tandoor is packed with locals and expats at the time of our visit, and we’re pleasantly surprised to find out how the Indian food and fine dining experience, here, really appeals to so many different palates. The venue, we learn, has been designed to reflect the elegant Nawabi lifestyle, whilst the recipes are an ode to the 200-year-old culinary heritage first created in the kitchens of the Nawabs of Awadh, as Royal Tandoor serves up Awadhi cuisine. The menu offers a rich array of succulent and juicy kebabs, mouthwatering curries and delectable biryanis, made using the freshest ingredients, spices and herbs. We quickly learned that flavour is what drives this mouthwatering cuisine. To recall, the Royal Chilli Garlic Prawns were exquisite, and we’re still salivating over the Classic Lamb Biryani. But let’s rewind back to our delicious dining experience at Royal Tandoor, located at The Pearl-Qatar. With a regal, ornate entrance, made up of wooden touches, you’ll find that Royal Tandoor is a beautifully intimate venue. Lavish curtains, intricate furnishings and long pillars make up this grand place that was established back in 2012. Alongside contemporary Indian cuisine, the venue boasts magnificent views of The Pearl and its picturesque surroundings. You can make the most of this setting by dining al fresco, and if you want a more personal foodie experience, you can request to be seated in one of the private dining areas. 102 fact magazine
We started our taste tour of India with a seafood dish, Samundari Saunfia Salan. Perfect for sharing, the presentation was on point, but, more importantly, the flavours were outstanding. We loved the use of fresh fennel in this signature dish,
priced at QR250. Carrying along this exotic savoury journey, next up were the delectable Royal Chilli Garlic Prawns; plump prawns basted with cilantro and garlic chilli. They were juicy and filling (QR135). As

if that wasn’t enough, we also went for the Badshahi Gosht Biryani: a classic lamb biryani done in the restaurant’s signature style. We loved the presentation with the deep red lamb chops set on top of the biryani rice – it was like nothing we’ve ever seen in Doha before! Take our word for it; it tasted just as excellent as it looked. For QR70, we’ll definitely be back just for this! Royal Tandoor is open daily from 11am to 11.30pm, making it a great spot for lunch and dinner, and they deliver all over Doha too. On weekends, the venue is open an extra half an hour! If The Pearl is not within reach for some, you’ll be pleased to know that Royal Tandoor has venues in Ezdan Mall, Souq Waqif and Al Saad. In “royal” standards, we’re giving this palate-satisfying place a very noble 10 out of 10! ✤ fact magazine
