This might be cheesy, but I think you’re grate. :P

I

t’s officially here; The New Year! I had the best start to 2020 as one can imagine; surrounded by friends and family as we raised a glass and promised to make the best of this year. No resolutions for me because I feel like that pressure does no good. I’m going to be living in the moment, visiting places that I have dreamt of for years and eating the food that makes me happy. Yes, and that absolutely means discovering more desserts! Doha is hosting so many guests this year and I have had the pleasure to run into so many people who have been experiencing our beautiful city. This just goes to show the luxury and the exciting place this city has become. From finally experiencing my life-long crush, a.k.a Adam Levine, live with his chart-topping band Maroon5 to actually experiencing my first music festival, Doha has been giving me LIFE! With the new year, we checked into one of the city’s legendary hotels: InterContinental Doha (p50) and then our world literally revolved at Three Sixty restaurant in the Torch Doha (p74). If you feel like that is it, think again. We are LOVING the Qatar-France Year of Culture as all hope of Corsica and Paris come back as a reality and we experience the best of French culture, right here in Qatar (p44). Well, a girl needs what a girl needs and by that, I mean a monthly pamper session. The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa welcomed us to Heavenly Spa with arms wide open and we are always up for a little relaxation time (p95). Our weekends were full as well as we went for our much-loved brunch again W Doha had us covered at this point (p79). Let’s not forget that we finally went to the luxurious Al Messila resort and experienced Italian food like never before at Veritas (p83). Fashion, cars, news and a bit of love are wrapped in this beautiful edition. We are so grateful for all that we do and all of you who look forward to picking up a copy of the monthly magazine. As I put my boots on and head out for yet another gathering, I hope to see you guys around town. See you next month, my lovelies! ☺

T

he #bigbmeetup is a CSR initiative founded by Bosco Menezes in early 2018, when he was inspired by the resilience of the people of Qatar during the blockade and thus wanted to start an initiative that had a voice a dialogue for both; local and expats to speak about their achievements and their life stories with the aim of inspiring everyone. Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum is the proud venue sponsor for the event along with JW Marriott and Marriott Marquis City Center Doha as hospitality Sponsors and ILoveQatar and Fact Magazine as media partners. Mr. Kees Wieringa, Director of Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum, said: “We are honored to be part and to host such an initiative that falls in line with the Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani Museum’s vision of creating a community for artists and encourages dialogue and culture.” The 5th edition of bigbmeetup has been themed on celebrating the artists of Qatar, local and expatriate. The event had a panel discussion moderated by multidisciplinary artist Othman Kunji with local artists such as Bouthayna Al Muftah, Mohamed Farj Al Suwaidi and Noor Abuissa. There will also be a talk by worldrenowned Arab artist Ahmed Al Bahrani, followed by acclaimed Qatari artist Mariam Al Mulla. Founder of bigbmeeetup Mr. Bosco Menezes, said: “When I founded bigbmeetup in early 2018, one of its pillars was to bring people of different cultures together under one roof. Little did I know I would be bringing renowned artists together from different cultures,” he continued. “This is a first for me and I am honoured to collaborate with the Sheikh Faisal Museum team on this. The White Majlis is the perfect setting to host my 5th meeting especially as it is themed on Celebrating Artists of Qatar. “I am excited about this event as it brings together artists from over 10 countries, all who call Qatar their home. And a lot of their current artwork is inspired by the country that they live in,” he added.” Bosco is also known to be a part of the local biker group ‘Soul Riders’ in their Iftar distribution drives and later started doing it himself with a few of his friends by driving across Wakra to 38

In addition, he is also a member of Wahab food heroes, Qatar Volunteers where he donates his photography skills occasionally. “We are excited and proud to be part of Qatar’s 5th BigBMeetup project. Together we share a vision to connect Qatar citizens and residents to build stronger communities as we provide our support for the contemporary art and artists, “said Rick Enders, Multi Property General Manager for JW Marriott Marquis City Center Doha and Marriott Marquis City Center Doha. “Today’s travellers’ focus is on experiential travel through cultural explorations, the arts, culinary samplings, and wellbeing. And we offer unique opportunities to our guests to experience the magic of our destination through art, food and the warmth of our hospitality.” The aim of this initiative is to inspire, inform, educate and spread the news of the good deeds individuals and groups of people perform in their everyday lives for the betterment of humankind. The meetup brings locals and expats together as one to celebrate the gift of life, championing camaraderie among all with the intention to exchange and impart knowledge. This year #Bigbmeetup will be going international with four art exhibitions out of which two will be in Qatar, and one in India and France, respectively. Bosco dedicates the meetup to his deceased mother Auroliana Josephine Menezes who lived and worked here in Qatar in the late 70s. ✤

Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Following the events of Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn splits with the Joker and joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya. When a narcissistic crime lord known as Black Mask places a target on a young girl named Cassandra Cain, Harley and the superheroes protect the girl and defeat Sionis.

DIRECTOR: Cathy Yan CAST: Margot Robbie, Bryan Unkeless

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Giving the amazing Harley Quinn the spotlight she deserves, Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn offers a quirky twist to the conventional superhero storyline. The eighth film in the DC Extended Universe and a follow-up spin-off to 2016’s Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey features Harley Quinn and her own team of female superheroes. Bringing Harley’s spunky energy front and centre, the world of Birds of Prey is very different to its predecessors in terms of the aesthetic and tone - but just as fascinating. Set after the events of Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn has split from the Joker and Batman has disappeared, leaving Gotham City vulnerable. As Cassandra Cain, a young girl, comes across a diamond belonging to crime lord Black Mask, Harley teams up with Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to help save her from the evil crime lord. What follows is Harley’s journey to start a whole new life as she overcomes her breakup with the Joker and leads an all-girl gang to take on a dangerous mob boss. Sounds like a whole lot of bad-a$$ fun!

The Authenticity Project By Clare Pooley

Manic

By Halsey

With the release of her highly anticipated third album, Manic, Halsey is gearing up for a whole new era of music. Blessing us with the unexpected, the singer’s latest offering has us jumping in our seats with excitement. Moving away from the dystopian fantasy world genre, the album is more about Halsey’s current worldview. Sampling a mix of everything from hiphop and rock to country, the record gives her a chance to express herself like never before. A gorgeous pop and electropop composition, “Graveyard” is all about loving someone who is in a bad place and unknowingly following them into this bad place. A relatable and pleasing track, it has all the makings of a quintessential Halsey song. On the other hand, “Without Me”, a mid-tempo pop and R&B track interpolates Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River”. Bringing the singer’s raw and honest side to the fore, her raspy vocals and unfiltered lyrics embolden the track and hold nothing back. Making us fall in love with her all over again, Halsey offers a soundtrack in which no song is similar to the other. Displaying a sense of duality, vulnerable lyrics and intoxicating vocals, Manic is all set to become another notch on Halsey’s musical belt.

POP/DANCE

Rare

By Selena Gomez

Making a comeback into the limelight with her newly enlightened self, Rare sees Selena Gomez returning to the musical scene at her assertive best. One of the best pop albums in recent times, Rare is a compilation of everything that the singer has overcome and experienced in her time away from the spotlight. A celestial ballad chronicling her journey to wellness and the drama surrounding her life, “Lose You to Love Me” is hands down one of the best songs on the album. The stripped back emotional track sees the singer laying her heart bare, surrounded with somber yet enthralling piano chords. Celebrating her newfound peace and clarity, the album sees Selena taking chances and getting out of her comfort zone. A fresh and upbeat danceable track, “Look at Her Now” is all about bouncing back from heartbreak. The empowering techno vibes are all we need to start this New Year off right! Offering a consistently unified sound across the tracks, Rare suggests tanatlising new directions for the singer.

When Julian Jessop, an eccentric, lonely artist leaves a green journal about his life in a local café, it brings together six strangers and leads to unexpected friendship, and even love. The novel’s quirky set of characters including a fabulous mommy Instagrammer and a charming addict make for a heartbreakingly sad and painfully true narrative. A story about being brave and putting your most authentic self forward is an uplifting novel.

was staying in the new wing of the hotel which opened in 2017 and has brighter and slightly more modern rooms. The sea view is worth the extra cost when you book just for the serene feeling you get when the curtains peel back in the morning. The city view is not a bad one either considering the property looks out onto the epic skyline. The room itself has a fully stocked mini bar, complimentary tea and coffee making facilities and a wide screen TV which you can watch from the comfy L-shaped corner sofa. The bathroom is brilliantly designed with plenty of compartmentalisation. The toilet, wash basin and bath/ shower facilities are all separated by glass. The shower is also separate from the main tub. When I closed the glass door, the sound was so contained that I could not even hear the music that I left playing on my phone by the sink. That was very neat. A touch pad by the bed allows guests to adjust the mood of the lighting at the touch of a button and curtains can be drawn without leaving the bed by simply clicking on an icon too. The Club Lounge is not just some stale room in a corner of the hotel but occupies a vast area. Club room check-in happens here away from the hustle and bustle of the main reception in the lobby. Natalie did my check-in at the Club Lounge and could not have been more helpful outlining all the timings for breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner plus talking me through all the amenities, facilities and opportunities on offer at the hotel during my stay. She was comprehensive and friendly. The lounge itself has a large dining area to eat and drink at as well as quieter spaces with armchairs to relax with a laptop fact magazine

There are work stations if you don’t have your own computer device and particularly noteworthy is the fact that the lounge has a large outdoor terrace facing the sea with sofas to sink into and while away time. Few hotels have that, and at InterContinental Doha, it’s definitely a unique selling point. On my first night there, I paid a visit to the Belgian Café which happens to be one of Doha’s biggest, best and most popular drinking haunts with its pub like interior and long sprawling terrace filled with an eclectic crowd of locals, expats and tourists. It boasts an all-to-rare unstuffy vibe. There is a food menu which is not exhaustive but rather Belgian in theme as is the beverage menu which is a lot longer but wouldn’t look out of place in Brussels. We enjoyed some mussels and a classic fish and chips supper with some well-renowned hops. Being a long-established property, they got in early and boast the longest beach of any hotel in Qatar. I enjoyed a crisp swim in the sea and did not have to fight for a lounger on the beach. The gym is rather large too and has a decent mix of machines and free weights. Though I did not use the pool, it too is large with plenty of space to enjoy a dip and take in the rays. Families feel very at home here with the vast space to safely roam around for the kids and gorgeous grounds that feel like a gentle oasis so near to city centre which is just a short drive away. The hotel offers few reasons to leave it unless you have to. I spent a glorious afternoon in the newly-renovated lobby lounge which is notable for its gold dividers that create a cute cubby hole of sturdy arm chairs and comfy sofas where visitors can enjoy a high tea in the afternoon with a custom prepared selection of savoury and sweet treats that are accompanied with a preference of tea or coffee. The same venue has an in-house pianist who twinkles the ivories on the grand piano in the evening, utilising the acoustics and offering a gentle wind down before bed. reliable Greek restaurant, Mykonos and the new Lebanese grill, Villa Beirut to name but three. I spent a few hours in Spa Intercontinental. It’s an absolutely first-class spa and the best I’ve tried locally. It occupies the entire newly-built wing and is managed by exceptionally skilled therapists. I enjoyed the wet facilities; sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi before having a full body scrub and then a full body massage using lychee oil which is supposed to take away the stress in the body. Each therapy suite has its own shower and changing area. As I relaxed in the loungre with a green tea afterwards, I felt like I was floating. The InterContinental Doha has a tremendous amount to offer and all of it lives up to a high standard. ✤

DARE TO LEAP In a time where the mobile phone market has become saturated with the latest tech and features, Realme is bringing more innovation and stylish design to the Middle East market. Created to deliver outstanding performance in a sleek package, Realme is stepping up its game with its latest offering – the 5 Pro – and FACT took a closer look.

M

aking a giant gadget leap in performance, Realme’s penchant for quality on a budget has made the 5 Pro the default choice in the value segment for smartphones. It’s easy to see that Realme is perfectly targeted towards the trendsetters of now – young people with an interest in breaking boundaries and those who want to enjoy the happy life brought by the beauty of technology – at an affordable price. Insisting in the philosophy of real design, Realme doesn’t compromise on aesthetic taste. With a motto of “Dare To Leap” – the Realme 5 Pro boasts a whole lot of firsts for the brand, the Full Speed Flagship phone comes equipped with a big 6.3-inch LCD screen on the front, claiming a 90.6 screen-to-body ratio. The pre-applied screen guard is also great for protection. Though the phone appears glossy – it is not slippery. We have a good grip on the phone and scrolling is as faster and smoother than ever, letting us enjoy a higher refresh rate. Even the 8.9mm thickness doesn’t pose any issues. One of the phone’s biggest unique selling points is its four rear cameras. When using the phone outdoors and at night, you’ll see that the screen can get quite bright. Photos are sharp and vibrant – especially as you get separate controls for HDR, Filters, and Chroma Boost, whilst video content is also decent and “social media worthy”. The Realme 5 Pro’s support of Widevine L1 DRM for high-res video streaming is another bonus for those who spend a lot of time watching content on their phone. The 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor has an f/1.79 aperture and 54

fact magazine

supports PDAF, which is usually found in more expensive phones. This is next to an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera with an f/2.25 aperture, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The front camera has a 16-megapixel sensor and f/2 aperture. It might take a few attempts to master the perfect selfie but once you’ve got the hang of it – prepare for Insta-ready pics, every single day. There’s also a fingerprint sensor on the rear, rather than embedded into the screen like other smartphones. Fingerprints and face recognition can be used to unlock not only the phone but also individual apps and a Private Safe which lets you store documents and photos away from prying eyes. For a phone in this price range, that’s a pretty nifty feature that we appreciate. Battery life is more than good for a phone in this segment. You’ll likely get a full day on single charge whilst using it for daily tasks like whatsapp messages, insta stories, internet browsing, and video streaming. Charging time is also reasonable, with the phone managing to reach up to 80 per cent in just over half an hour. For general day-to-day usage and multitasking between apps, the Realme 5 Pro is a true ally for users. For a low-cost device it looks and feels incredibly premium. The geometric pattern and metallic sheen achieve a lovely smooth finish. Crystal Green and Sparkling Blue add a distinct jewel-toned appearance that wouldn’t look out of place in any millennial’s hand. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.REALME.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

RUGGED DURABILITY Nissan Patrol – launched in the fifties, still shining in 2020. The story of a vehicle that’s enjoyed a history of success across the world.

fact magazine

CITY RIDES •

W

hether you identify it as the Nissan Patrol or the Super Safari, you’ll know this SUV as a successful series of four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles manufactured by Nissan in Japan and sold throughout the world. First introduced in 1951 in Japan, once post-war car production had only just restarted, the Patrol was an instant hit: here was a utility car that could really handle tough terrain. Its devotees have continued to grow as the Nissan Patrol lives up to its slogan of “The Hero of All Terrain.” Its unique capabilities, high performance, and solid dependability to tackle all challenges and weather conditions have earned it the reputation of rugged durability. Since the 1950s the Patrol has been in constant production thanks to the refinement of its features and capabilities and the extreme loyalty demonstrated by its customers. It has become something of a cherished family heirloom, handed down through the generations as and when a new model is purchased. In the Middle East, the car’s ruggedly stylish appearance and allconquering performance has unsurprisingly led the model to become an inseparable part of the social and cultural fabric of the region. From its inception, the Patrol has set the benchmark in its category becoming an iconic vehicle now in its sixth generation.

A LEGEND IS BORN First generation 1951 – 1960 The first generation of Patrol, which featured a 75 hp 3.7L engine, was launched by Nissan in 1951. In 1956 a pivotal moment for the series happened; the Nissan Patrol was the first to be exported to the GCC region, specifically to Kuwait, where the Patrol was quickly embraced as part of the family – trusted and relied upon. It was during this period that it started to demonstrate its off-road prowess as it climbed Mount Fuji – the first car to dare such a feat. fact magazine

57

• CITY RIDES

BIGGER AND BETTER Second generation 1960 - 1980 The second generation of Patrol witnessed significant changes in the design of the vehicle to increase in size and stature – with more capabilities to woo offroad enthusiasts. Though the Patrol’s tough durability meant that it was a popular choice for military organizations, the 60 series was the first model to gain traction with the consumer audience. During this period, the vehicle took on some of the world’s most robust mobility trials. The G60 became the first vehicle to cross the Simpson Desert in Australia, one of the world’s most remote regions, which is spread across 200,000 sq. km.

GRABBING MORE ATTENTION Third Generation 1980 - 1987 Reflective of the era, the third generation of Patrol adopted a more modern style and was the first Patrol to be available in bright colors with loud graphics. The vehicle had a more powerful turbo diesel engine that generated 81 KW of power, and its maximum speed reached 145 KM/Hour. As for the body, the high roof was clearly distinguished, allowing more space for passengers and cargo at the same time. 58

CITY RIDES •

ENHANCED LEVELS OF COMFORT Fourth Generation 1987 - 1997 In 1987, Nissan released the fourth generation, and Nissan Patrol Fanta Limon became the first-ever diesel-fed car to make it to the top ten in Paris-Dakar Rally. This body and design of this generation were significantly developed; the vehicle became more spacious and was equipped with new features, such as electric mirrors, sunroof, modern suspension systems, and had more powerful engines than ever.

INCREASED TECHNICAL SOPHISTICATION Fifth generation 1997 - present The fifth generation of Nissan Patrol was a benchmark in the vehicle’s journey, with its powerful engines and its state-of-theart technology offering superior suspension, steadiness, and enhanced safety features. Y61 Patrols were used as support vehicles for an epic 14,000 km journey from Scotland to South Africa for the documentary ‘Long Way Down’ led by actor wan McGregor and Charlie Boorman. The Patrol also won the first Australian Outback Challenge and became a repeating champion from 2005 till 2012. In 2017, as a direct result of consumer demand and popularity of the car in the region, Nissan announced the rebirth of the Patrol Super Safari in the Middle East. In 2018, Nissan expanded the iconic Patrol Safari range with the Patrol Falcon, Gazelle, and Gazelle X exclusively for and available to customers in the Middle East. The engines of the fifth generation’s Patrol were very powerful. The engines TB48DE were modified to generate 2000 hp and 1,491 KW to help climb the sandhills and tackle other harsh road challenges in the region.

BREAKING RECORDS AND BUILDING UPON ITS SOLID REPUTATION Sixth generation 2010 - present The Y62 is the holder of three Guinness World Records, including ‘Heaviest object pulled by a production vehicle in 2013’, ‘Fastest dune ascend’ in 2015, and ‘Larger synchronized car dance’ in 2018. In 2015, the world premiere launch of the first-ever Nissan Patrol Nismo took place in the Middle East. The Y62 generation of Nissan Patrol is used as official vehicles of desert challenges events in the region. In 2014, Nissan presented the new facelift with a new front and lamps along with renovation in the cabin. Nissan also released a limited-edition vehicle with red leather seats and matt black colored components. Starting 2017, Nissan implemented the 7-speed automatic transmission in all its models, while it adopted before a 5-speed automatic transmission and 6-speed manual one. This version provided more options to enable motorists to quickly switch from four modes: driving on sand, stones, roads, and snow. In 2019, the Nissan Patrol enjoyed a new facelift, while it launched the all-new Patrol in 2020.

CONTINUING TO LEAD Nissan Patrol 2020 The model year 2020 Patrol features enhanced comfort and

luxury with the latest Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies while retaining its much loved, go-anywhere persona with classleading power and unmatched on- and off-road capabilities. The new model has enhanced superior styling with a bold and confident exterior and a luxurious interior using premium materials and focusing on driver comfort in every situation. ✤

REAL TALK: LES BENJAMINS SS20 Taking inspiration from feminine sophistication and urban staples, Les Benjamins is unveiling a new collection for the Spring/Summer 2020 season, one that is thoroughly rooted in the brand’s commitment to design real garments made for real people.

fact magazine

• FASHION FOCUS

This season, Les Benjamins explore new interpretations of ease and luxury through a cycling-wear influenced ready-to-wear collection. Inspired by The 4 Rivers Path, Korea’s most popular cross country bicycle trail from Seoul to Busan, the new collection offers a curated selection of easy-to- wear silhouettes complemented with timeless evening-wear pieces. In this context, the freedom of movement, and the abolishment of any physical restraints are primordial. The Spring/Summer 2020 collection, therefore, introduces dynamic styles that are emphasized by color-blocking styles and graphic mixed media prints. Silhouettes emphasise the theme and balance the contemporary spirit of Les Benjamins – one of arts, craftsmanship, and street-culture – rendering it as relevant as ever. The distinctive outfits incorporate casual and engineered looks directly drawn from cycling-wear. Each piece is thereby cut in a range of premium and hi-tech fabrics and enriched with a multitude of cycling details such as utilitarian pockets and protective coatings. Minimalist, active tailoring blends cycling elements into the brand’s archetypal urban styles. Fits suggest ease, first and foremost: cropped cycling tops and jackets, as well as form-fitting cycling shorts and high-waisted flared track-pants ensure absolute comfort and style. This season’s leading print, the Carpet Design jacquard, for its part, embellishes the surface of a variety of key pieces, such as maxi dresses, cropped jackets and asymmetric skirts. In addition, sequined racing tops and asymmetric styles add a sophisticated edge to the collection. The palette, for its part, is both tropical and urban: colorways of sundowner pink, sky blue, and fresh mint are celebrating the feeling of summer and put in stark contrast to urban shades, such as light grey, off-white and black. 62

THREE SIXTY AT THE TORCH IS A MUST-SEE EXPERIENCE FOR ANYONE LIVING IN OR VISITING DOHA. WITH SWEEPING VIEWS FOR MILES, THAT SPAN ALL THE WAY TO WEST BAY ON A CLEAR DAY, THE ROTATING RESTAURANT’S VIEW IS NOT TO BE MISSED – WITH IT ONLY GETTING MORE IMPRESSIVE AT NIGHT SEEING THE CITY LIT UP. FACT’S JENNY GUTTRIDGE VISITS THE RESTAURANT FOR A ONE-OF-A-KIND EXPERIENCE…

I

t takes an hour and a half for Three Sixty at The Torch to make one full rotation. You can spend this time taking in many of Doha’s popular hotspots, including the Khalifa Stadium, Aspire Park and the 2022 building. It was my first experience of The Torch and it did not disappoint. After reaching the 47th floor, I met Elmira, my very kind server. I was given their signature welcome drink of lemon and mint cooler (which was so good I ended up having three!). I immediately felt at ease, Elmira was more than happy to answer any questions about the menu which was both refreshing and impressive to have a server that knew the dishes so well. The restaurant itself has a wonderful aesthetic. Most of the food is served on black slates, feeling modern and elegant but still relaxed, where the colours of the dish truly stand out, and wow, how colourful they are! The beetroot yoghurt salad was an absolute feast for the eyes, as well as delicious to taste. The tanginess of the yoghurt matched beautifully with the sweetness of the beetroot and emphasised the

main attraction of Three Sixty - where colour, texture and presentation are key. I spoke with Chef Sathik about the inspiration behind the new menu, he said texture was their main focus – to give their patrons a full experience of ingredients and flavours. All the ingredients are sourced locally, with the chefs going to the markets every day to procure the finest quality ingredients for their dishes. Everything, even down to the olive tapenade served with the bread, is homemade. The tomatoes and herbs in the prawn Provençale were so fresh that it felt like each bite transported you to the Mediterranean. The speciality dish for texture has to be the trio of chicken, with chicken cooked three different ways; deep fried, grilled and in a roulade with a rich mushroom stuffing. It was an explosion of flavour and textures as well as being fun to eat! Comparing the smokiness of the grill, to the sweet and crispy coating of deep fried, to the rich earthy mushroom chicken roulade was entertaining and a great talking point during the meal. The addition of a nut and black olive crumb to the dish created an extra layer of crunch to each mouth-watering bite. Another must try when you come here is the Wagyu ribeye steak with forest chanterelle mushrooms, it’s perfectly cooked and the combination of fondant potato and asparagus gives even the best steakhouses in Doha a run for their money. I also would be amiss not to mention the truffle mashed potato which was smooth and creamy and the perfect addition as a side to the steak. Then came the desserts. The raspberry parfait was another colourfully presented plate, with the pink dome made out of freeze-dried raspberry puree playing into the texture story that the Chef has created. Accompanied with a raspberry sorbet, it created a refreshing edge to the taste and balanced the sweetness of the parfait perfectly. However, I surprised myself at how much I enjoyed their deconstructed tiramisu! I’m normally not a tiramisu fan, but the lightness of the 76

GOOD BRUNCH VIBES ONLY Spice Market at W Doha Hotel & Residences is one of Doha’s best restaurants – there’s no doubt about it. Now, the long-established venue has entered the brunch scene and we’re still in awe… fact magazine

hat’s all the rave about? Well, I guess it’s about giving us what we want and Spice Market knows exactly how to do it. The brunch starts before most others have opened their doors. A prompt noon kick-off time allows hungry guests to get their full fill of food and beverages. The restaurant has a real party vibe with a drinks trolley in the entrance way so that a beverage can fall straight into your hands as you enter, and you can begin sipping on something cool and refreshing before you’ve even sat down at your table. First impressions – brilliant. The bar area is reordered as a street market with Asian fusion buffet carts. There are also live cooking stations dotted around the room ready to serve up something fresh and tasty. I quickly realised the key is the order you go for. That’s why I started with some tangy fresh salads with a mild kick and then got stuck into the vibrant array of sushi that is a hallmark of W Doha. For years, the hotel has boasted some of the best sushi you can get in the country and at brunch you can have as much as your heart desires, both hot and cold. The other key to getting through brunch is pacing. After plenty of rest and liquid lubrication, I ventured on to some of the hot live stations. The noodles stall had a chef who whipped up a Pad Thai with a choice of shrimp or chicken and like the saying goes, quite literally handed it to me on a plate. Next to that was an Indian station with a delicious lamb biryani and a vegetable curry too – both of which were incredibly memorable. There was plenty of roti too – great for scooping up your desired concoction. Buffets can be a turn-off at brunch for me but this had real plus points. Unlike some big brunches where everything is miles apart and you end up walking for half the afternoon around the venue only to forget that platter you saw at the start, nothing is too far away here. All food is kept hot and fresh. Much of it is cooked or prepared right in from of you so it’s not sitting there getting cold or tired. The staff work the 80

room like a well-oiled machine keeping everybody’s drinks topped up and the beverages are a little more memorable and imaginative that your average brunch. We sat next to the DJ who pumped out a party playlist of popular hits that before long became hard to resist the temptation to get up and have a little dance. And we weren’t alone and everybody was on their feet and moving to the beat. The W prides itself on being edgy and cool and this brunch is the literal translation of that vision with Spice Market’s low-lit lanterns and dark floors adding an intimate and trendy feel to the dining environment. Few people wanted to leave when the party stopped but luckily the happy hour at Wahm, the bar upstairs, was just getting started as we left. I got the sense that the party – and the good food – never stops here! ✤

BUON APPETITO!

Al Messila, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Doha, is a property that Qatar has been waiting for with anticipation. hen you enter Al Messila Resort & Spa, you instantly know that you have entered a new coming of luxury in town. A place where you can see the authenticity of the local culture by the grandeur of the palace like entrance; you’re bound to be mesmerised by the new state-of-the-art location in Al Messila, meaning ‘where the water flows’ a name aptly given to this lagoon of splendour. Walking into Veritas, the blue and beige colour theme was reflected throughout the restaurant; the silverware to the chandeliers and even the block tiles make this place look classier. The restaurant overlooks the lush greenery and Grand Pool of the resort, making it the perfect view to have when dining. What I expected to be a night of alfredo and Margherita pizza proved to be an education of authentic Italian food. Gone were the stories of the two cliched dishes that are associated with Italian cuisine. The feast started off with some Mezzopane al Palpettone Tartufato, which is veal on toast dressed in oozing parmesan cream and black truffle. Just the aroma of this little beauty had me smacking my lips as I waited patiently for the friendly staff to scurry away for the next dish. It was just me and this tantalising appetiser. My plus one became a character of another story as I relished on the bread. Sinking my teeth in, I think I developed a whole new level of gratitude that day. This has to be my recommendation for the starters. The antipasti and pasta fresca had me confused over whether I really did love Italian food as much as I thought. The Tartare di Rape Rosse Primavera was one of the most delicious combinations of beetroot, strawberries, goat cheese mousse paired with croutons - perfection to the point that it hurt to send the plate back without finishing the entire serving. However, the chef and his handcrafted traditional spaghetti, known as Chitarrine, Aglio, Olio e Peperoncino, sealed the deal for me. How a dish that only consisted of parmesan cream, garlic, and chilli-infused oil could taste as superb as it was, is a true ode to the chef. I believe it has to be the fact that the fresh pasta was actually handmade right in front of us, an entertaining little show by the chef, that made all the difference. The pasta, paired with the velvety chilli oil was definitely a gastronomical delight for me considering how a simple dish could be so alluring. Another item that was quite memorable for me would be the Millefoglie di Vitello al Forno; a surprise in a plate. A gustatory experience with this one, I wish I was sitting in Veritas right now and having this impeccable serving. As my knife swiftly cut through the veal and was dipped in the Parmigiano potato, enriched by the crispy leeks, I never knew that I would be converted into a veal lover with just one bite! The mellow flavour that was heightened by its accompaniments was the perfect way to end the main course. When it comes to dessert, I am never too eager for having something served by restaurants as I feel like their specialties lie elsewhere. With Veritas, I welcomed the signature Tiramisu, Dolci, in a pearl-shaped boat and was won over - a testament 84

fact magazine

to the Michelin-starred chefs here because they made a very traditional dish standout by balancing this otherwise overly rich dessert. The restaurant is an excellent opportunity to experience some authentic Northern Italian delicacies and see what the Michelin Star chefs bring to the culinary game in Doha. A place that will not leave you disappointed, it is definitely worth making the visit to this beautiful resort. ✤

arcel Wanders’ extravagant Qatar wonder that we know as Mondrian Doha is one of those awe-inspiring hotels that I have grown to love. The design is an absolute treat to be in with everything appearing as an exaggerated version of real life. As soon as you enter, you’re greeted by the enormous golden vase that shows off the luxurious hospitality created by sbe. I’ve seen it all, the four restaurants that boast local and international cuisine, the iconic ESPA and, now, the newly launched EllaMia. For those who do not know, EllaMia is actually an international brand that sbe has launched in London and Qatar, recently. The beautiful pastel pink and black theme adorns the Frozen Forest lobby of Mondrian Doha. A contemporary design that gives a royal touch to the coffee culture, I found myself in one of my favourite places in the world; a dessert haven. Pastries, cakes, chocolates, macaroons and croissants; aah, the finer things in life are always sweet! EllaMia is a joyous, sophisticated and modern coffee brand named after the two daughters of Sam Nazarian, sbe group’s Founder and CEO. The EllaMia Coffee brand transcends the ordinary with its special and authentic blends of coffee, offering a trendy vibe that creates uplifting memories. Guests were there to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries in a lavish setting with balloons and rose petals - the cutest thing you’ll experience! Where one would start with the 88

savoury section and move to the sweets, I was doing the complete opposite. Starting off with their homemade sodas and eventually going to the blend of coffees, I was adjusted to my current situation like you’d think I was a regular. The menu has a selection of light bites, freshly baked goods and pastries ranging from cookies and cakes to madeleines and macarons to satisfy your sweet tooth. I’d just like to mention the mini cloud, a treat in the form of almond genoise with basil strawberry panna cotta and vanilla mousse, that stole my heart on this particular evening. After sampling their desserts, along with the Parisian macaroons, I tried the Le Yyonnais sandwich, recommended by the team. Well, it hit the spot with the savoury goodness and I actually went ahead and ordered a second one! Offering a wide range of artisan coffee blends, teas, homemade sodas, green juices and smoothies, EllaMia’s menu has a new and unique selection of food and drinks, adding a whole new dynamic to the local F&B scene. Some of these – very insta-worthy – signature drinks have the world praising the brand. So, what are you waiting for – time to plan a visit! ✤

f there’s one thing that is unanimously associated with Qatar, it is the spectacular beach life that we have here. Amongst the 13 beaches that we all know and love, Sealine Beach truly stands out. About 40 kilometres from Doha, the adventurous sand dunes of Sealine Beach Resort can be found leading you towards a weekend of thrills. The resort holds a special place in our hearts as it was the first experience of beach life for many of our team and most of us still remember spending the most romantic staycations at this very spot. The sun going down and reflecting on the dreamy Arabian Sea as you witness one of the most glorious views of your life, is a sight you won’t quickly forget. As you prepare to BBQ in the private garden of the chalet, bask in the silent surroundings that makes for an awe-inspiring moment indeed! Sealine Beach Resort is not just about the splendid location; it is mostly the seventh heaven feeling. The variety of activities you find here cannot be compared to any other experience in Qatar. A team of professionals assist you as thrill-seekers embark on the journey of adventure. Offering unique stateof-the-art recreational facilities such as water sports, desert safari, camel and horse riding, as well as football, basketball, and more, this resort promises to be the perfect getaway from the thriving urban life for all. The day we arrived at the resort; the hospitality proved to be exceptional as expected! We were instantly introduced to the team who would be taking care of us over the weekend and chose our activities. A quick tour of the resort made us reminisce about the last time we were here – a stroll down memory lane and we’re in love with this place all over again. Two outdoor pools, the Inara Spa, private beach access and VIP services were all at our disposal on these days and we appreciated how the local shuttle was available to transfer us back to the city. Being the adventurous family that we are, we opted to try out the jet skis, dragon boating and then the face-off boat. To say that we thoroughly enjoyed dunking each other in the sea was the highlight of our trip. Sandy dunes waited for us shortly after. Doha Bus organised the entire sand dune experience, and although there’s the option of riding on the bus, we chose to go for the good-old, four-wheel Land Cruiser. The choice is yours As for the food, the gourmet dining outlets promise a unique culinary experience at all four of the restaurants. Some of the highlights included the onemetre-long pizza at La Merenda. A personal favourite would have to be the 24-hour in-room dining service which is the ideal fit when you’re here to relax and simply binge on late-night Netflix series. 92

THE HEAVENLY ESCAPE The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa is known for its excellent treatments and pampering sessions. FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan gave in to the word through the grapevine and booked herself into the award-winning Heavenly Spa‌ fact magazine

95

• SPA & WELLNESS

I

s there really anyone in the city who has not heard of Heavenly Spa at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa? I’ve been asked numerous times about my views on this place and embarrassingly enough, I never had anything to say – I’ve never had the opportunity to try their services. Well, 2020 is all about new things to try and so, I booked myself in for the acclaimed Heavenly Spa Massage and the newly-popular Oxygen Facial - a package fit for a queen! The soothing sensation relaxes you instantly from the moment you start your journey towards the spa. Lush greenery with waterfall walls and lined pebbles take you up to the entrance of the spa where a sense of tranquillity has already taken over my senses. The expert team ushers me towards a locker as they explain the entire ritual and leave me at the relaxation area to sip on some chamomile tea - imagine, the best is yet to come! My therapist escorted me to the treatment room, making sure that the serenity of the spa is matched by different aspects in the room; from the music to the lighting and the preparation of the foot scrub to start the massage. To say that this experience was extravagant would be a word too small for what I was exposed to. The rhythmic movements of the masseuse instantly put me in a state of contentment as I endured the pain of the muscle knots loosening. The Heavenly Spa’s focus on wellbeing and energy renewal comes out in true meaning during the spa journey that you embark on. A leisurely 50 minutes later, I felt as if the stress of the buzzing city life had finally left my body and I prepped for my oxygen facial. The oxygen facial promises to make your skin look younger and is usually aimed at skin with wrinkles and lines. A trend that was started by celebrities and is loved by everyone, Qatar was not behind in adapting to the beauty industry’s latest fad and this facial has been amongst the most popular treatments around town for a while now. Even though this was not the first time I was getting the oxygen facial, it was still news for me to learn about the newly formed lines on my face. As Emily, my therapist focused on everything that she could see from her microscopic vision, I experienced the oxygen via a machine that I can only describe as ice-cold wind on my face. The reason it is this way is because it is supposed to improve collagen and make the skin look plumper. Emily informed me that the high-pressured oxygen was infused with vitamins and minerals to give the desired effects. Now, I did not mind the cold oxygen at all since I came out of it looking as ripe as a fresh strawberry! It is believed that the effects last up to two weeks after the facial and this just gave me the chance to go makeup free during the winter season, flaunting the perfect flushed look that I absolutely love. Heavenly Spa stays true to its name considering the facilities and expert team that it has. Living up to their reputation of being ‘heavenly’ – my experience was an apt one – nothing short of paradise. With my body relaxed and the perfect skin that I was now gifted, I was ready to take on the Doha bustle after two hours of pure bliss! ✤
