Jaeger-LeCoultre’s smallest mechanical movement, Calibre 101, is reimagined in the stunning 101 Secrets watch crafted in Platinum 950.

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Calibre 101 collection has long been a symbol in watchmaking and the latest addition, the 101 Secrets in Platinum 950, elevates this legacy to greater heights. This luxurious timepiece, set with over 1,000 diamonds, represents the perfect blend of artistry, innovation and technical sophistication.

The heart of the watch lies in the Calibre 101 movement, a marvel of miniaturisation that was first introduced in 1929. Weighing just one gram and consisting of 98 intricately assembled components, this manuallywound movement remains the smallest mechanical movement in the world. Despite its diminutive size, it delivers a power reserve of 33 hours, exemplifying the maison’s dedication to precision. The watchmaker’s focus on precision dates back to its founder, Antoine LeCoultre, who, in 1833, pioneered the development of his own tools to create highly accurate calibres. The Calibre 101 continues this tradition, embodying the essence of fine watchmaking, where both technical achievement and aesthetic appeal are paramount.

True to its name, the 101 Secrets incorporates two secrets. The first is the dial, discreetly concealed beneath a cascade of diamonds, which opens to reveal the time. The second lies in the mechanism that activates the dial cover, allowing the wearer to unveil the time with a subtle press of a diamond-set button. The idea of secret watches can be traced back to the 19th century when they were designed to protect the glass and the delicate workings of pocket watches. In this modern interpretation, the secret watch becomes a fusion of functionality and jewellery, blurring the lines between haute horlogerie and high jewellery.

Crafting the watch required an extraordinary marriage of techniques and technology. More than 15 areas of expertise came together to create this intricate piece, from CAD design and 3D printing to centuries-old gem-setting skills. The timepiece’s platinum case and bracelet presented their own challenges, as platinum is significantly harder to work with than gold. However, its lustrous whiteness enhances the brilliance of the diamonds, creating an extraordinary play of light that dances across the wrist. The bracelet alone features 1,028 diamonds, totalling more than 26 carats, each stone carefully positioned using a combination of grain-set and griffe-set techniques.

Every detail of the watch reflects the meticulous craftsmanship housed in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Métiers Rares atelier. The Art Deco-inspired design, with its perfectly symmetrical rows of diamonds, demonstrates the maison’s deep reverence for tradition while embracing continuous innovation. This limited-production timepiece embodies the brand’s unwavering commitment to excellence, blending technical mastery with exceptional beauty.

The Vague brooch/hair jewel is a tribute to the untamed power of the sea. Echoing a 1910 tiara from Boucheron’s archives, this item is inspired by Hokusai’s iconic wave, The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Dejana warns, however, that not all detoxes are beneficial. “One needs to know what toxins the body is trying to get rid of and which organs are overloaded,” she explains, emphasising the importance of a targeted and tailored detox. One of the key strengths of a natural approach to wellness is its focus on personalised care. Practitioners take time to understand each individual’s unique bodily needs, considering factors such as lifestyle, diet and emotional well-being. This allows them to craft treatment plans that target the root cause of health concerns rather than offering a one-sizefits-all solution.

Both Dr Taal and Dejana agree. “Our vitality and appearance are often a direct reflection of our internal health, particularly the state of our microbiome and detoxification systems,” says Dr Taal. An imbalanced gut or sluggish detoxification system can manifest as dull skin, breakouts or lack of radiance. Dejana echoes this sentiment, noting that many of her clients not only feel healthier after undergoing naturopathic treatments but also look younger. Improved digestion and detoxification often lead to clearer skin and better vitality, showing that true beauty really does start from within.

Harmful Habits to Avoid

Achieving fitness requires more than just implementing healthy practices; it’s equally important to avoid habits that harm the body. Both experts stress the need to reduce exposure to processed foods, environmental toxins, excessive sugar and enhanced drinks. These, according to Dejana, lead to inflammation and long-term issues like hormonal imbalances and fatigue. Dr Taal also points out the hidden dangers in everyday products like glyphosate, parabens, phthalates and heavy metals, which can disrupt hormones and cause various health problems. “We’re constantly bombarded with harmful substances,” he says, advising people to be mindful of what they apply to their skin and choose products free from these chemicals. Awareness and avoidance of such toxins can make a significant difference in long-term wellness.

Practices They Swear By

Both practitioners believe in maintaining simple, consistent routines that nourish both the body and mind. Dr Taal follows what he calls the “foundational elements of health” – principles deeply rooted in both modern science and ancient wisdom. These include nutrition, regular physical activity, stress management, quality sleep and connection with nature. “Spending time outdoors is more than just getting vitamin D; nature restores balance to our bodies and minds,” he says. He also emphasises the importance of sleep for recovery and mental clarity. “Quality rest is nonnegotiable,” Dr Taal asserts. He encourages mindfulness techniques such as meditation and deep breathing to help manage the stress that modern life often brings.

Dejana lives by her “seven pillars”, which encompass similar ideas. These include a balanced diet, proper hydration, supplements to combat deficiencies, regular exercise, sun exposure, restful sleep and stress management. “Stress can accelerate ageing and cause health imbalances,” she says, reinforcing the importance of managing emotional well-being . Both experts agree that wellness is a lifelong journey, not something achieved overnight. By focusing on simple, sustainable practices and avoiding harmful habits, they maintain balance in their own lives and guide people towards the same path.

A SPA JOURNEY WITH PUMPKIN AND SALT

Embark on a pampering session with unique therapies. Fernanda Langhammer headed to Talise Spa to try an array of exciting treatments specially designed for the month of October.

It was my first time visiting Talise Spa at Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain, and I have to say that I really enjoy the journey to that side of the island. There is no traffic and the feeling of going on a short road trip is fantastic – music on and the company of my own thoughts. To get to the spa, you have to turn left after the main entrance and go down in the elevator. When you reach the spa floor, you have female and male sides. Farah, the receptionist, gave me a tour. The predominant colours are gold and white with marbled floors for a sleek yet sophisticated touch. The space includes a ladies’ gym, indoor pool, sauna, steam room and a fun cold shower with a wooden bucket replacing the shower tap – it reminded me of the viral ice bucket challenge of a few years ago. There are 13 treatment rooms, six on the female side, six male and a couples’ room. However, the space that is an absolute gem is the Hammam, with an imposing round marble bed in the centre – definitely a must-try on my next visit.

I was then introduced to Lina, my therapist for the day, who explained that I would have three different treatments to sample some of the therapies available. For October, a special Halloween-themed scrub with pumpkin puree, brown sugar, almond oil and cinnamon is offered and I was really excited to try it. After a summer of indulgences and lots of sun rays, my skin definitely needed a reboot, with lots of dead cells to remove to reveal a glowing effect. The 30-minute scrub was delightful, the smell was amazing and the texture was not that grainy; sometimes, scrubs can be too rough on the skin, but this was very pleasant, along with Lina’s firm but gentle pressure. After she finished spreading the product, I took a shower to remove the exfoliating agents without using any soap, as Lina requested. My skin was extremely soft and felt renewed. I don’t usually exfoliate, but I do feel that I should incorporate this habit into my beauty routine from time to time.

I then returned to the massage bed, where Lina gave me a comprehensive back and leg massage. The 30-minute therapy was mostly spent on my back as the knots there are quite stubborn. For this treatment, she used a unique combination of salt and coconut oil (inspired by the visit of chef Craig Cormack, a salt expert, to Jumeirah this month; read more about it in the box below). The spa salt provides natural vitamins and minerals to the skin, which helps to relax the muscles. It also cleanses and detoxifies the skin, promoting healthier pores. Along with circular movements and pressure points, she stretched my arms and legs, helping to relieve the stiffness. After my body treatments, Lina proposed an express facial. Talise Spa works with the French brand Biologique Recherche. She started by cleansing my face with Eau Micellaire Biosensible, a soothing micellar lotion, followed by Lait U, a vegetable cleansing milk that she carefully massaged on my complexion. After removing the cleanser with a warm towel, she applied the Masque Biosensible, a soothing and protecting facial mask, which she left acting for around 20 minutes. She again cleaned my face with a towel and used the Serum Matriciel Visage, which provides a tightening effect and improves the face’s structure and contours. The moisturiser was the Creme MSR-H, which comes with a formula that redensifies the skin tissue, making it firmer and more elastic, smoothing wrinkles and fine lines. The final touches came with the Creme Contour Des Yeux Biosensible, a hightolerance cream for the eye contour, Biokiss, a regenerating lip balm, and a spritz of L’Eauxygenante. This hydrating mist stimulates the epidermis and envelops it in a protective veil. The 30-minute treatment was exactly what my dehydrated face needed; my skin felt tighter and plumper, with a rested effect. I loved it, and I am now tempted to have a full-facial to see even better results – some of the options are the Soin Restruction Et Lissant, a reconditioning treatment that tones the epidermis, Lift C.V.S. Treatment, an exfoliating and lifting treatment combined with massage techniques for mature skin, and the MC110 Facial, which helps to tone the epidermis, purifying and contouring the face.

It was time to say goodbye to Lina and hello to Blessing, who brought a special drink inspired by Halloween with a touch of pumpkin, lemon and red berries – super refreshing and delicious! Celine, the Spa Director, came to talk to me and explained all the exciting features offered by Talise Spa, such as unique packages and the spa’s signature oil blend that offers lavender, coffee, pomegranate, musk and oud for ultimate relaxation and rejuvenation. Asimple phrase, yet it holds so much meaning. In Japan, Itadakimasu is spoken before meals as a way to express gratitude – not just to the chef but to everyone involved in bringing the meal to the table, from farmers to fishmongers. It sets the tone for an experience that is more than just eating; it’s about savouring, appreciating and immersing oneself in the food. With this in mind, I stepped into Mirai Restaurant & Lounge, a Japanese haven in the heart of Block 338, eager to indulge in the new additions and best-seller dishes. From the moment I walked in, the serene yet stylish space instantly transported me to Japan. Hanging barrels, bamboo accents, minimalist wooden furniture and the sushi chef at the live counter crafting plates with precision – all added to the authentic experience. The soft lighting and the calm hum of the space created an elegant, Zen atmosphere that promised a great afternoon. Chef Junior Gomez greeted my dining partners and me, clearly excited to spoil us with his culinary creations. We were seated by a window where the natural light filtered through, and naturally, the afternoon started with drinks. And let me tell you, these weren’t just your run-of-the-mill beverages. My favourite had to be the Hibiscus Collins. A bright, bubbly mix of hibiscus tea, lemon, sugar, aquafaba and sparkling water, it was a refreshing burst of sour and sweet with every sip. A perfect start to the meal. The Yuzu Lemonade followed closely behind. This sour and zesty drink, with its unique tang of yuzu and lemon soda, was the ideal palate cleanser, sharp yet not overpowering. For those who prefer something more tropical, the Mango Chili was a surprising delight – sweet mango balanced by the subtle warmth of chilli syrup, with coriander and lime, adding a refreshing twist. Finally, the Açaininja, a fruity combination of açai, blueberry, lychee and lemon soda, was light, crisp and an excellent thirst-quencher for a humid Bahraini day.

Once the drinks had us suitably refreshed, it was time to dive into the food. We started with the Yuzu Edamame. A classic, yes, but the addition of fresh yuzu juice and sesame gave this familiar dish a bright, citrusy twist. Each bite was a burst of flavour that perfectly complemented the drinks. It’s funny how something so simple can be so satisfying.

The Tako Salad was next, and it did not disappoint. A delightful mix of textures, the tender octopus was perfectly paired with crisp Frisée lettuce, chicory, crunchy edamame beans and many other fresh vegetables. The Goma mirin dressing had a gentle sweetness that enhanced the veggies without overpowering the delicate seafood. If you’re someone who enjoys the play of different textures in your food, this salad is a must-try.

The Chicken Gyoza followed. These were little pockets of joy – grilled to golden perfection, crispy on the outside but soft and juicy inside. The spicy ponzu dressing was the real star here, adding a zesty kick that elevated the flavours to new heights. And just when I thought things couldn’t get better, the Lobster Bao Buns arrived. Fluffy bao, filled with blanched Omani lobster and crunchy lolo bionde lettuce, drizzled with lemon soy dressing. It was indulgent but not overwhelmingly so, making it a must-try for seafood lovers. Now, for the sushi. It was difficult to choose from the extensive platter, but I started with the Kari Kari Maki, filled with crispy salmon skin and topped with crab stick and yuzu kosho mayo. The Chuka Nagi Maki came next, with shrimp tempura and cucumber inside, topped with grilled unagi and dressed in Chuka wakame. The pop of tobiko mayo and the sweet heat from sweet chilli pepper brought this dish together in an explosion of textures and flavours.

However, the highlight of the sushi spread for me was the Spicy Hamachi Maki. Torched hamachi, prawn katsu, kimchi sauce, sriracha mayo and fresh green jalapeño – each bite had a spicy kick that kept me coming back for more. The O-toro, Chu-toro and Bluefin Tuna Nigiri were an indulgent treat as well, the rich, buttery texture of the fish melting in my mouth with every bite. A pleasant surprise accompanied the sushi – the wasabi root,

freshly grated at the table, offering a more nuanced heat than the usual paste, taking things a notch higher. Even the vegetarian offerings, like the baked sweet potato, were exceptional. Grilled over charcoal and brushed with shiso butter and togarashi, the vegetable had a smoky, caramelised edge that was impossible to resist.

The main courses were nothing short of spectacular. The Wagyu 10+ was grilled to perfection over Japanese briquette charcoal. The marbling of the purebred Australian Wagyu ensured each bite was an unforgettable melt-inyour-mouth experience, bursting with rich, smoky flavours. Accompanied by mixed mushrooms and a yuzu kosho glaze, the dish was the very definition of umami. For seafood lovers, the Black Cod marinated in Den miso for 24 hours was another highlight. The miso infused the fish with a sweet, complex depth, making each bite of the flaky, buttery meat a true delight. Though I was nearing my limit, there was no way I could skip dessert. And boy, am I glad I didn’t. The Creamy Vanilla Cheesecake was a treat for the senses, with its raspberry and strawberry confit adding a tart contrast to the richness. The almond crumble added a lovely crunch, and the coffee ice cream was the perfect finishing touch. For chocolate lovers, the Raspberry and Chocolate dessert, with its layers of coconut sponge, blood orange jelly and matcha crumble, was a harmonious balance of flavours and textures. However, my absolute favourite had to be the Matcha Chocolate Mousse – a decadent combination of cherry compote, hazelnut sponge and raspberry ice cream, offering the perfect blend of sweet and bitter. From start to finish, every dish was crafted with precision and care. Whether you’re after sushi, a hearty main or a sweet ending, Mirai has something for everyone. Every bite was a celebration of authenticity and, as I finished my meal, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experience. I left with a full stomach and a happy heart, already thinking about when I could return.

We were warmly welcomed by the charming Marketing Manager, Zahra Ebrahim, and her enthusiastic team, who made us feel right at home. Seated at an elegantly arranged table with sleek black plates and polished chopsticks, we were offered cold towels infused with essential oils – a refreshing touch that instantly melted away the humidity of the day. It was the perfect start to an afternoon of culinary exploration.

Our first stop on this flavourful voyage was the Virgin Sangria, a vibrant and fizzy drink that woke up our taste buds like a splash in a cool pool. Bursting with fruity notes and just the right amount of sparkle, it set the stage for what was to come.

The Crispy Tuna Bonito Salad kicked things off with a bang – a delightful mix of fresh tuna, creamy avocado, crunchy cucumber and sweet cherry tomatoes, all brought together by a zesty basil aioli. Every bite was like a burst of sunshine, transporting us straight to the coastline.

Next, we dove into the Oxtail Borscht, a unique blend of Asian and European influences. Rich, slow-cooked oxtail chunks in a tangy tomato broth, combined with mushrooms and pak choi, created a hearty, soulwarming soup that felt like a comforting hug in a bowl – great even during summer.

The starters were a carnival of indulgence. The Takoyaki – golden, crispy balls filled with shrimp and octopus – drizzled with truffle dressing and sprinkled with bonito flakes, were a delicious taste of the ocean. The Chicken Gyoza, with its crispy skin and juicy filling dipped in a spicy cherry hoisin sauce, was an absolute hit. But the showstopper was undoubtedly the Peking Duck. Thin, succulent slices of duck, crispy on the outside and soft within, paired with delicate pancakes, hoisin sauce, cucumber and leek, created a symphony of rich, sweet and savoury flavours that was wonderful for sharing and had us coming back for more.

For the main course, the Sizzling Sliced Lamb was a standout, with tender meat slices infused with smoky cumin and chilli. The sizzling sound, the aroma wafting up from the plate – it was a feast for the senses before we even took a bite. And the taste? An absolute delight, with each morsel bursting with deep, smoky flavours that left a pleasant tingle on the tongue.

The Beef with Black Bean Sauce brought us straight to the bustling kitchens of Singapore. Succulent beef slices stir-fried with crisp vegetables in a savoury, umami-rich black bean sauce. It was the kind of dish that’s perfect with a bowl of steamed rice, each bite balancing the meat with the freshness of the vegetables.

But the highlight of the evening was the Thai Chicken Green Curry. Smooth coconut milk, aromatic with lemongrass, galangal and lime leaves, enveloped pieces of chicken and fragrant basil. Comfort food at its finest – rich, creamy and mildly spicy. Served with jasmine rice, every spoonful was like a warm, soothing embrace of Thai hospitality.

The Lobster Chow Fun was pure indulgence. Sautéed local lobster, shiitake mushrooms and bamboo shoots tossed in a spicy XO sauce made each bite a luxurious treat, with the natural sweetness of the lobster perfectly complemented by the richness of XO.

For a taste of Malaysia, we tried the Char Kway Teow Beef – a stir-fried flat rice noodle dish with juicy beef, savoury sambal chilli paste and sweet kecap manis sauce (a sweetened soy sauce). Smoky, spicy and sweet all at once, it was like a culinary postcard from Penang’s vibrant street food scene. The noodles were perfectly chewy, the beef tender and appetising. Just when we thought we couldn’t eat another bite, dessert arrived, and we couldn’t resist.

The Thai Mango Sticky Rice was a simple yet satisfying treat – sweet mango slices with sticky rice drizzled with creamy coconut milk. It was like a tropical holiday on a plate. The Banana Fritters, golden and crunchy, served with vanilla ice cream, were a playful mix of hot and cold, crunchy and creamy. And the Seasonal Fresh Fruit Platter was the ideal light, refreshing end to our culinary journey.

SMALL YET SPACIOUS AND AUDACIOUS

OHLALA SPENT THE DAY IN VOLVO’S NEW SMALL ELECTRIC SUV, THE EX30. THE VEHICLE COMBINES CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY, LOW CARBON FOOTPRINT AND GOOD LOOKS.

Since their founding in 1927, Volvo have gone on to become one of the most well-known and respected automotive brands in the world and they are highly regarded for their competence in safety, design (incorporating their Swedish heritage) and performance. This month, thanks to the team at Volvo Bahrain, OHLALA got behind the wheel of the brand’s first fully electric small premium SUV, the 2025 Volvo EX30.

Dynamic Exterior

The first thing we noticed as the car came into our view was that despite it being the smallest SUV in Volvo’s lineup, the EX30 is a unique creation that exudes performance-inspired styling from every angle. Designed to have the lowest carbon footprint of any Volvo to date, the EX30 efficiently uses renewable and recycled materials for around 25% of all aluminium and 17% of all steel and plastic components of the exterior. The car follows a Scandinavian design language with clean, bold lines that are complemented by a robust stance. At the front, the deftly sculpted bonnet flows neatly into the large blank grille that is strikingly punctuated with the Volvo emblem. While other familiar Volvo design elements, such as the Thor’s Hammer shaped LED headlights, help frame the confident face

of the car. At the flanks, the athletic stance of the vehicle is underscored by bold lines and 19-inch wheels with a stylish glossy black finish. A wide panoramic glass sunroof interlocks with the compact SUV’s pillars contributing to the EX30’s eye-catching appearance. The well-balanced proportions continue at the back with C-shaped, stacked LED tail lights completing the rear look.

Progressive Interior

Shifting our collective attention to the interior, as we got inside the EX30, we were immediately struck by the elegant, minimal, but very modern design of the cabin, which takes its inspiration from Scandinavian nature. Additionally, the model’s interior also uses recycled materials such as woven flax, upcycled denim, ground plastic and blended wool in various aspects like the doors, dashboard, seats, etc., for a greener footprint and a unique look. The front seats were uber comfortable, electrically adjustable sport seats with four-way lumbar support and a convenient memory function, the upholstery was in Nordico – a technically advanced material created from recycled textiles. There was sufficient head, shoulder and leg room for both front and rear seats. Once seated, we appreciated the ergonomic squared design of the steering wheel which had plenty of switches for driver

controls and also housed the gear selector. Adding to the practical storage solutions and further using the cabin’s space effectively – the glovebox is relocated to the centre of the dashboard under the main screen, and the centre armrest now also houses the window controls and a sleek sliding cup holder. The large panoramic glass roof allowed for sunlight to stream into the cabin making the interior feel bright and spacious and the luggage compartment offers 318 litres of space, that’s large enough for a few carryon suitcases, this can be increased when the split rear seats are folded.

Advanced Infotainment & Technology

For the first time in our experience and as a bold choice, the EX30 opts to forgo the instrument cluster from behind the steering wheel and instead combines it into the main central display. The single vertically oriented 12.3-inch screen serves as both the infotainment and gauge display. It manages to proficiently display at-a-glance driver information and all control features on one screen, which took some getting used to but eventually proved convenient. This intentional setup plays into the minimal and elegant aesthetic of the overall space, which is enhanced by the five wonderful ambient lighting and sound themes that evoke different moods from Scandinavian landscapes. Also, the touchscreen delivers high-definition visuals and, most importantly, has a highly customisable fuss-free interface. Adding another layer of convenience were the Google apps and services that were built-in for the EX30 - the first EV car to offer this feature. We were able to download apps from Google Play and use them alongside various other functions hands-free, thanks to Google Voice Assistant. The system is also compatible with Apple CarPlay. Additionally, Volvo installed a Harman Kardon premium soundbar across the base of the dashboard rather than individual speakers throughout the vehicle, which was a nice touch.

Power, Performance & Safety

As with every vehicle we inspect, getting out on the road was our favourite part of the experience. First off, the EX30 has a convenient keyless entry and was ready to go once seated without having to press any buttons. We were fortunate enough to drive the EX30 Single Motor Extended Range variant. Its capable rear-wheel drive (RWD) setup produces 200kW of power with 343Nm of torque, allowing us to surge from 0-100km/h in a quick 3.6 seconds, which translates into a top speed of around 180km/h. As we further tested the nuances of the vehicle, we were left impressed with its great handling, proficient cornering and the keenly responsive braking that complements the powerful acceleration. Volvo has also stated that this EX30 variant, when fully charged, delivers a range of around 476km. The fast-charging public stations can charge 10% to 80% in a little over 25 minutes. It's important to highlight that there are also home charging options available.

Like every Volvo, the EX30 is big on safety and in turn is properly fashioned with a full suite of safety and driver assistance features. It’s equipped with a door opening alert – one of several features of the Safe Space Technology – a new advanced driver alert system and much more.

Our Verdict

The Volvo EX30 is a superb compact electric SUV with an impressive range and strong cutting-edge tech features combined with Volvo quality, safety and design, that’s provided at an accessible price.
