We also had the pleasure of teaming up with fashion favourite GUESS to host the launch of the brand’s Fall/Winter 2024 collection, where lucky readers walked away with some amazing prizes. Check out the pics in our exclusive feature.

When not hobnobbing with the glitterati, we were busy around town sampling lots of wonderful food from Asian to Azerbaijani and enjoying the delights of a fabulous spa visit. Hard life, I know!

And you’ll spot a special feature this month where we give you the lowdown on the gorgeous, recently opened Our Habitas Ras Abrouq. It’s even printed on recycled paper in keeping with the resort’s sustainable ethos.

A FASHIONABLE HISTORY

Hermès Heritage In Motion – the third in the famed manufacturer’s Heritage exhibition series – is on display at the National Museum of Qatar until November 9.

Building on the success of the two earlier shows, Once Upon a Bag in 2022 and Harnessing the Roots in 2023, both of which were held at the same venue, this third instalment completes the Hermès Heritage cycle of touring exhibitions which explore the history of the house founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermès.

Showcasing iconic themes, colours and objects, it retraces the footsteps of the generations of creators and craftsmen, from the origins of the house as a harness-maker and saddler to the present day.

The chapter ‘In Motion’, features objects that carry within them the desire to take off, to go elsewhere and roam since Hermès came into being at a historic time when modern life was gathering pace and people wanted nothing more than to move with ease in a bustling and increasingly mobile world.

Whether at a trot or a gallop, on foot, on horseback or car, bicycle or aircraft, Hermès creations advance in the same light, elegant and ingenious style. The exhibition

is testament to this, presenting objects from the Émile Hermès collection, the archives, the Hermès Conservatoire of Creations and contemporary pieces.

Within this vast array, of particular interest is the very first Hermès scarf, its design concentric circles of horse-drawn carriages inspired by the playing board of an eponymous game or the pair of postilion’s riding boots whose size and robustness are dreamily reminiscent of the marvellous seven-league boots, while the Flâneur d’Hermès bicycle displays its fluid lines with grace. The Bolide picnic bag is itself inspired by the Sac pour l’Auto: created by the house in the 1920s, illustrating how Hermès objects also travel through the ages.

The exhibition is free to enter, open from 9am to 7pm Saturday to Thursday and 1.30pm to 7pm on Fridays. ✤

A CREATIVE OPPORTUNITY

Local talents, creators and artists have the chance to showcase their works at Qatar Foundation’s (QF) Al Ghorrah for Literature and Arts.

The event, which will act as a hub for cultural interactions, celebrating the heritage and arts of Arab Islamic civilizations, takes place from November 28 to December 2 at Education City.

Al Ghorrah will feature a diverse range of performances in both Arabic and English, either as solo acts or part of larger groups.

Submissions from artists and creators who want to participate should range from five minutes to an hour and can include theatrical performances – drama, comedy, stand-up or improvisation – instrumental or vocal musical acts, poetry readings, puppetry and magic shows, among other creative showcases.

As part of the programme, QF is also hosting a competition for local elementary and middle schools, inviting students to act out 15- to 25-minute-long performances. Schools will audition in front of a panel of judges, with the top four selected to perform at Al Ghorrah.

Hend M. Al Thawadi, Engagement & Activation Lead at Qatar Foundation, said: “Our mission is to not only promote [our] heritage regionally and globally, but to foster a deep sense of unity and belonging across diverse communities.

“As a space for meaningful cultural exchange, Al Ghorrah supports grassroots artists by providing opportunities to showcase their talents in an environment that values and appreciates both the arts and literature. We are especially committed to nurturing this within schools in Qatar and across the region, ensuring the next generation is connected to their culture and literary heritage.

“Al Ghorrah is designed to be educational and entertaining, allowing people to explore history, reconnect with their roots and enjoy a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere. We invite artists from various disciplines to share the beauty of expression through their chosen medium. With immersive experiences that engage the audience, we offer a unique space for artists and visitors to connect and participate.”

RARING TO GO!

High-octane F1 racing returns as the 2024 Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix gears up to be a thrilling ride!

Moving into the second year of its landmark 10-year deal which runs until 2032, the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix marks the continuation of the country’s commitment towards hosting world-class motorsport events and showcasing the nation’s growing prominence in the F1 world.

RACE REPORT

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Lusail International Circuit, events kick-off on Friday, November 29, with the Practice Session soon followed by the Sprint Qualifying (previously called the Shootout), an exciting addition to the Formula 1 weekend.

The Sprint itself takes place on Saturday, November 30, and is then followed by the main Qualifying round later in the evening, where grid positions for Sunday’s big race will be fiercely contested. Notably, Qatar is among only six global venues chosen to host F1 Sprint events in the 2024 season, making this an even more exclusive affair!

The Sprint is Formula 1 as we know it but in a shorter race format.

Time For A Change

There’s big news in Formula 1 as the iconic racing series has teamed up with global luxury retailer LVMH which is likely to mean a new track timekeeper.

With its 75th anniversary coming up next year, F1 has announced a 10-year partnership with the luxury maison that includes brands such as Louis Vuitton and TAG Heuer, which are expected to be involved.

The agreement comes as Rolex, which has been the official F1 timekeeper for many decades, prepares to bring its involvement to a close, with TAG Heuer widely expected to take up the pole position.

At the crossroads of the LVMH Group’s values of creativity and excellence with Formula 1’s innovation and high-performance, the partnership will bring together the best of these two worlds and provide unparalleled experiences combining thrilling sport and elegant art-devivre, wheel-to-wheel racing and time-

It covers a distance of just 100km and lasts roughly around 30 minutes. A fast-paced racing spectacle it encourages an approach by the racers that’s more dynamic rather than strategic and also guarantees action since there are either points or grid position at stake. Also, unlike the Grand Prix, there are no mandatory pit stops since the race is too short for tyre changes to be effective.

Finally, all the efforts from the previous days culminate into the premier event on Sunday, December 1, with the main F1 Race, a thrilling showcase of the most elite racing teams battling it out over 57 laps (303.8km) around the 5.419km Lusail International Circuit for top finish on the podium.

tested craftmanship, for enthusiasts, fans and clients.

LVMH and its teams will share their exceptional savoirfaire and entrepreneurial spirit with the world of Formula 1 through hospitality, bespoke activations, limited editions and outstanding content.

Further details of the partnership will be announced in early 2025.

TRACK FACTS

● Situated on the outskirts of Doha, the Lusail International Circuit is the only motorsport facility in Qatar and holds both Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) licences.

● Built in just under a year at a cost of USD58 million, the circuit was finished in time to host Qatar’s first-ever MotoGP race – the Marlboro Grand Prix of Qatar on October 2, 2004.

● The 5.4km layout was primarily designed for motorcycles, with a flowing design, a long main straight, exceeding 1km, and a mix of medium- to high-speed corners, particularly popular among riders. The track was later upgraded to host major automobile sporting events.

● In 2007, the circuit added permanent outdoor lighting for night races. Then in 2020, it underwent a significant upgrade to its floodlighting system which replaced the previous lights with a cutting-edge LED system that greatly enhances visibility during night races for both drivers and spectators.

● Spanning 5.4km, the circuit features a complex layout with 16 turns (10 right and six left) that challenges drivers and adds strategic depth to the race.

● The sequence from turns 12 to 14 features an almost flat-out, triple right-hand apex, posing significant challenges for tyre management. Drivers need to balance speed with tyre wear as they navigate this technically demanding section.

● The circuit’s main straight measures just over 1km, providing its only DRS (Drag Reduction System) zone. This section allows cars to reach exhilarating speeds, making it a thrilling section for overtaking and high-speed manoeuvrers on race day.

● The circuit hosted its first Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix in 2021 as an in-season replacement, leading to significant modifications to accommodate the cars, including upgraded barriers and kerbs.

● Before the second edition of the F1 Grand Prix in 2023, the circuit was renovated, with the facilities being upgraded and the capacity being increased from 8,000 to around 50,000.

● The current F1 lap record at the circuit is held by Max Verstappen who clocked in at one minute and 23.196 seconds during the Qatar Grand Prix in 2021.

THE DRIVERS

With just Brazil and Las Vegas to come before the F1 Circus heads to Qatar, there was still everything to race for as we went to press in a season that’s seen more on- and off-track excitement than we’ve witnessed in F1 in many years. The driver standings could easily change over the coming weekends and we’ll be watching avidly to see if Max Verstappen may, finally, be pipped to the post for the top spot in 2024.

For The Gram

Everyone’s on Instagram these days and, if you want to know more about the drivers, you could do worse than to check out their social media accounts. It seems everybody’s doing it with

the top star, Sir Lewis Hamilton, recording almost 38 million followers. That’s a staggering number and even more than the official F1 account!

His closest rivals are Charles Leclerc on 16.8 million, Max Verstappen with 12.7 million, Carlos Sainz 10.5 million and Lando Norris on nine million – we think we can confidently predict that his numbers will rise as the championship race heats up since he’s the only one with a chance of catching Max.

And don’t forget to check out the memes and trolls, some of them are hilarious!

Watch It

We have to say it, in the run up to the big race weekend, we’ve been binge watching Drive To Survive on Netflix. We’re loving the, seemingly, behind-the-scenes look at the drivers and teams –the first season even had us feeling sorry for Esteban Ocon when he was turfed out of his seat despite his best efforts. The series started in 2019, following the 2018 Season, and has run each year since then with the 2024 showings beginning in February. Yes, it’s produced in collaboration with Formula One, so, you’re definitely not getting a ‘warts and all’ exposé but it’s addictive watching with tantrums aplenty and a fun way to learn more about the sport’s personalities and myriad regulations, many of which we’ve seen popping up in the news in recent weeks.

Read It

If your interest is now truly piqued – ours was – then we highly recommend you grab a copy of The Formula a fab book by sports journos Joshua Robinson and Jonathan Clegg that was released in March this year. Billed as telling ‘how rogues, geniuses and speak freaks reengineered F1 into the world’s fastest-growing sport’, it really is a proper behind-the-scenes look. Without being overly technical, it gives a bit of history, information on some mechanical wizardry, tales from boardrooms and courtrooms and details of some of the skullduggery over the years that your average fan knows nothing about. If you love Formula One, prepare to be enthralled.

AND THERE’S MORE

● Sharing the spotlight and enriching the motorsport extravaganza in Qatar will also be the next generation of female talent in racing. The Formula 1 Academy, a competitive racing series for young women aged 16 to 25, will also be making its debut at the Lusail International Circuit, This innovative series is dedicated to breaking down barriers and promoting diversity, inclusivity and accessibility in motorsport. By nurturing a new generation of female drivers, the Academy aims to increase their representation in the sport and pave the way for them to ascend to the sport’s highest levels.

The event features 15 talented drivers from around the globe, including standout participants like Hamda Al Qubaisi and Amna Al Qubaisi from the UAE.

In this one-make series, drivers take the wheel of identical Tatuus T421 chassis, fitted with 13-inch tyres provided by Pirelli. Each car is powered by a turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine from Autotecnica, delivering 174hp and reaching impressive top speeds of up to 240km/h.

The weekend will kick-off with practice sessions, allowing drivers to familiarise themselves with the circuit’s nuances before entering a qualifying round that sets the stage for two thrilling races. And, as the penultimate date of Formula 1 Academy’s hotly-anticipated six-round series, this is sure to be a hard-fought battle.

● Next up is the exhilarating FIA Formula 2 Championship, where 22 identical single-seater cars take to the track. This one-make

race allows drivers to truly showcase their skills in front of an eager Formula 1 audience, adding another layer of excitement to the event.

● And, if you still want more, there’s also the Porsche Carrera Cup Middle East – the region’s favourite one-make GT series, organised by Lechner Racing. It offers a platform for the Arab world’s most promising drivers to broaden their racing experience and, with its truly local flavour, it’s definitely worth a serious watch to spot the stars of the future.

ALL THE GOSS

Max Verstappen remained tight-lipped after the Singapore Grand Prix, seemingly protesting the governing body’s decision to penalise him for swearing during a media session telling a reporter: “I would prefer if you asked these questions outside the room,” highlighting his protest.

The Red Bull driver was in the news again in Mexico with his driving described as ‘dangerous’ and ‘ridiculous’ following an incident with Championship rival Lando Norris in which the Englishman was first forced off the track and then the Dutchman ran wide, resulting in two sets of penalty points. Max later brushed off the penalties as ‘not my biggest problem of the race’.

Daniel Ricciardo got the axe from the Red Bull squad and was replaced by reserve driver Liam Lawson following the Singapore GP. However, team boss Christian Horner seems keen to keep the popular Aussie on board, perhaps in a different role. Meanwhile Australian Supercars Championship chief, Shane Howard, has said he would welcome the driver with open arms and there is also talk around the paddock of interest from other teams.

In other Red Bull news Christian Horner (of whose own struggles this season we will say no more) refused to confirm that driver Sergio (Checo) Perez will complete the season after a disappointing Mexican race which saw the team drop to third, behind Ferrari, in the Constructors’ Championship. And, Red Bull senior advisor Dr Helmut Marko seemingly confirmed rumours that the outfit could be looking at McLaren driver, Oscar Piastri.

US Vice President and Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris, whose fate will be known in just a few days, revealed during a recent interview with Howard Stern that she’s an avid follower of Formula 1 and supports Lewis Hamilton.

And the Brit champion found himself in a bit of hot water with a social media post mentioning his excitement at returning to the Brazilian GP – it’s well known that he loves the country, being an avid fan of its late F1 hero Ayrton Senna, even becoming an honorary citizen in 2022. His post, which was a simple Brazilian flag, did however attract fury from one set of fans, though not of the F1 kind. Football supporters mistakenly thought he was supporting Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior for the prestigious Ballon d’Or prize. Doh!

By the way – belated Happy Birthday Roscoe IYKNK. ✤

CONTEMPORARY CLASS

FACT spent the day in the all-new Mitsubishi XFORCE, a premium compact SUV packed with an impressive array of high-end features.

With a legacy dating back over 150 years, it is no wonder Mitsubishi has produced some of the finest 2WD vehicles to grace the market. Having previously test-driven the Xpander and the Montero Sport GLS, we expected big things when we were invited to experience the new Mitsubishi XFORCE.

Futuristic Exterior

The day we were introduced to the new XFORCE, is one we won’t soon be forgetting. Mitsubishi has bestowed its latest creation with a sleek and stylish appearance, one that exudes contemporary class and sophistication.

The brand has based the design on the Silky and Solid concept, meaning this compact SUV looks both rugged and refined, a combination sure to draw attention when out and about.

At 4.39 metres long, 1.81 metres wide and 1.66 metres tall, along with a class-leading ground clearance of 222mm, this versatile car is equally suited for busy city streets and off-road trails.

From head on, we appreciated the design of the new generation dynamic shield with honeycomb accents and Mitsubishi Motors’ iconic T-shaped LED headlights that ensure an athletic look.

At the sides, muscular fenders and two-tone, 18-inch, diamondcut alloy wheels reinforce the powerful persona, further enhancing the desire to take the SUV on a 2WD adventure.

The rear also features T-shaped LED lights and dual exhaust openings, ensuring an all-around sporty aesthetic.

Tech-Savvy Interior

Once inside the shapely SUV, we were taken by the luxurious nature of the interior, a space made up of premium materials and cutting-edge technologies.

Mitsubishi has included a mélange fabric as padding for the instrument panel – a first for this Japanese brand –creating a sense of enclosure, as it covers everything up to the door trim.

The modern, driver-focussed cockpit features a wellthought-out layout with ultra-comfortable synthetic leather seats that are supple to the touch. We also appreciated the sturdy steering wheel, along with the convenient positioning of all controls.

This contemporary cockpit also contains a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen on the centre dash. This Smartphone-link Display Audio (SDA) is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Combined with an eight-inch Digital Driver Display, the user-friendly nature of this setup meant information and entertainment were always at our fingertips.

The XFORCE offers 40:20:40 split-rear seating and provides a flexible setup for transporting people and cargo. Ample head, shoulder and leg room guarantees a comfortable ride for all occupants, with the hands-free power tailgate adding to the dayto-day convenience of the vehicle.

Other must-mention interior highlights include wireless smartphone charging, dual-zone climate control, USB Type A & C ports and a nanoe X air purifier.

Satisfying Safety & Performance

Under the well-proportioned bonnet, the all-new XFORCE houses a four-cylinder, 1.5-litre MIVEC responsive engine, coupled with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Cruising around the city, this effective combination delivered an ideal balance between driving power and fuel efficiency. Although we could have used a few more horses when accelerating, once the car got up to speed, it proved capable and responsive.

The innovative transmission also features a ‘Ds’ function (Downshift and Sporty) that enhanced the driving force and engine braking, ensuring a confident and sporty driving experience.

The XFORCE also delivers four driving modes – Normal, Gravel, Wet and Mud. This means owners can set off confidently under any conditions, making it a suitable SUV for the Middle East’s challenging off-road terrain.

Adding to the car’s capabilities is the inclusion of Mitsubishi’s Active Yaw Control which, in our experience, delivered excellent performance and stability en route.

Lastly, the suspension system features McPherson struts at the front end and a torsion beam at the rear, adding to the smooth nature of the drive.

NEW STANDARD IN HYPERCARS REVEALED

The Bugatti Tourbillon, the luxury automotive brand’s latest hypercar, made its Middle Eastern debut in Qatar.

With the region boasting, perhaps, more than its fair share of discerning connoisseurs and motoring enthusiasts, it’s no surprise that hypercars have found an appreciative home here making the Middle East an important market for Bugatti.

The Pinnacle Of Performance

At the heart of the Bugatti Tourbillon is a bespoke 8.3-litre quadturbocharged V16 engine. Delivering an astonishing 1,800hp it provides unrivalled acceleration and speed boasting a top speed of 445km/h.

Racing from 0 – 100km/h in just two seconds, the car’s acceleration is equally impressive, and the performance is enhanced by an advanced aerodynamic design, carefully developed to optimise airflow with reduced drag and increased downforce, offering exceptional handling even at high speeds.

Iconic Design

The model’s exterior is a stunning fusion of Bugatti’s rich heritage and modern aesthetics. Inspired by iconic Bugatti models such as the Type 57SC Atlantic and the Type 41 Royale, the Tourbillon exudes timeless elegance. The body is constructed from lightweight carbon fibre, reducing the car’s overall weight and improving performance. The signature C-shaped curve, running along the sides of the car, is not only a design hallmark but also a functional element that aids in managing airflow. At the rear, a retractable spoiler automatically adjusts to provide additional downforce when needed. The front of the Tourbillon is dominated by sleek LED headlights that blend seamlessly into the car’s aerodynamic contours.

Driver-Centric Interior

The interior boasts a level of luxury and craftsmanship that is synonymous with the Bugatti name. Designed with the driver in mind, it offers hand-stitched leather upholstery, polished aluminium accents and bespoke carbon fibre trims.

The driver-focused cockpit features a fully digital instrument cluster that can be customised to display real-time performance data, including speed, power output and torque distribution.

Engineering Innovation

The new Tourbillon is a testament to Bugatti’s commitment to innovation and excellence in automotive engineering. The car’s advanced aerodynamics and lightweight materials are the result of years of research and development, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in a production hypercar.

The engineers have utilised a cutting-edge carbon composite platform, which provides the perfect balance of strength and lightness. This, combined with the car’s advanced suspension system and all-wheel-drive technology, ensures an unparalleled driving experience, regardless of the road conditions.

Speaking at the launch, Konstantinos Psarris, Regional Director, Middle East & Asia, Bugatti, said: “The Bugatti Tourbillon marks a new incomparable era of our marque, a testament to our commitment to crafting art that transcends time. Bringing Bugatti’s new era-defining car to Doha allows us to share this vision with a country that deeply appreciates French luxury and matches our avant-garde spirit and cutting-edge innovations.” ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.BUGATTI.COM FOR MORE

A HISTORICAL NEW CHAPTER

The F80 is Ferrari’s new supercar, destined to join iconic models from the 1984 GTO to the 2016 LaFerrari Aperta.

The Italian house of the Prancing Horse unveiled the F80, writing a new chapter in the history of legendary supercars in a limited run of just 799 examples.

The F80, is tasked with embodying the ultimate in engineering for an internal-combustion-engined vehicle and employs all the most advanced technological solutions, including latest-generation hybrid technology for the powertrain, to achieve previously unseen levels of power and torque.

The powertrain is further complemented by the introduction, for the first time ever on a Ferrari, of electric turbo technology (e-turbo), alongside the three-litre, 120° V6 F163CF that produces peak power of 900hp.

The F80 is equipped with the first Ferrari road car engine to benefit from a new approach for statistical knock control, which lets the engine operate even closer to the knock limit. And, to lower the centre of gravity, the engine has been installed as close as physically possible to the flat undertray.

The F80 pushes aerodynamic performance to levels never seen before on a Ferrari road car, as testified by the 1,000kg of downforce produced at 250km/h.

Vehicle Dynamics

The F80 is equipped with the most advanced suite of technological solutions currently available for managing vehicle dynamics in all conditions on the road or track. The Ferrari active suspension system is undoubtedly one of the showpieces of these and has been re-engineered from the ground up.

Another major evolution introduced by the F80 is the new SSC 9.0 (Side Slip Control) system, which now benefits from the integrated FIVE (Ferrari Integrated Vehicle Estimator) function.

The hybrid powertrain of the F80 offers three different driving modes: ‘Hybrid’, ‘Performance’ and ‘Qualify’ while the braking system introduces another important innovation: CCM-R Plus technology, developed in collaboration with Brembo.

To maximise day to day usability, even when not driven at the limit, the F80 is equipped as standard with all the main ADAS driver assist functions currently available.

Bodyshell

The bodyshell of the F80 is completely new and is fabricated from pre-preg carbon fibre and cured in the autoclave using technology derived from Formula 1 and other motorsports. Butterfly doors, as on the LaFerrari, open vertically to an angle of almost 90°.

Exterior

A car that could accommodate a passenger, while feeling like a single-seater, was the inspiration and the F80 has a strongly futuristic visual impact with references to aerospace. From the side view, the rear section has a sculpted flow emphasising the muscularity of the entire rear wing. And the wheelarch ends with a vertical panel that stands proud of the door paying homage to the visual language of the F40.

Another functional but highly symbolic element is the louvred engine compartment spine, where six slots create an unexpected relationship between the geometric lines and sculptural surfaces of the car.

Interior

The compact proportions of the cabin were made possible by opting for a cockpit inspired by a single-seat racer, creating a visual perception akin to an enclosed Formula 1 car.

The control panel is also oriented ergonomically towards the driver, creating a sort of cocoon effect around them. While ergonomically complete and comfortable, the passenger seat is so well integrated into the trim of the cabin that it almost disappears. ✤

The motorsport-derived battery cells are engineered to maximise power output to the E-module, enhancing throttle response and elevating the W1’s performance. Remarkably, despite this emphasis on power, the W1 can also operate in zero-emission, electric-only mode for distances of up to two kilometres.

A remarkable achievement in lightweight engineering and the use of bespoke carbon fibre structures allows the W1 to weigh in at only 1,399kg, resulting in an exceptional power-to-weight ratio of 911PS per tonne.

The W1 also showcases revolutionary aerodynamics, inspired by McLaren's Formula 1 heritage. The car features a sophisticated ground-effect design that dramatically transforms its driving dynamics. In Race mode, the W1 lowers its ride height by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear, engaging up to 1,000kg of downforce – an unprecedented feat for a road car. Combined with the stunning McLaren Active Long Tail, which in race mode extends backwards by 300mm, transforming the rear of the car and extending the working area of the diffuser, it plays a crucial role in further optimising aerodynamic efficiency.

With only 399 units being produced, the McLaren W1 is a testament to the brand’s rich history in motorsport, embodying the spirit of relentless innovation and performance excellence.

WHERE THE DESERT MEETS THE SEA

Exploring Our Habitas Ras Abrouq where ‘Luxury for the Soul’ combines with a haven for rejuvenation and relaxation.

Opened earlier this year, Qatar’s first offering from Our Habitas, the global disruptive hospitality group, occupies a stunning location nestled on the edge of the UNESCO-protected Al-Reem Biosphere Reserve, where the desert meets the sea, just an hour’s drive from Qatar’s capital.

Each Our Habitas is described as a ‘home’ created by a diverse community of people seeking human connection, authentic experiences and a better future together. The properties are redefining the concept of traditional luxury, with a mission to change lives through creating deeper human connections and to make a lasting impact on local communities through education, employment and the creation of sustainable micro-economies.

Our Habitas Ras Abrouq is a gorgeous luxury resort where guests will discover awe-inspiring sunsets, an iconic infinity swimming pool and e-bikes to explore. But more, it is a home of creativity, a place where dreams extend beyond the horizon, designed for human connection, selfexpression and play.

The location, in an untouched region of Qatar, celebrates the brand’s core commitment to delivering ‘Luxury for the Soul’ through meaningful experiences, inspired by Qatar’s past, present and future and the country’s vibrant creative sector. To achieve this, the brand worked closely with cultural partners to conceptualise programming, brought to life through Our Habitas’ core pillars of music, art and culture, wellness, adventure, food and learning.

Artful Accommodation

Already recognised by Time magazine as among the ‘World’s Greatest Places 2024’, Our Habitas Ras Abrouq offers 42 spacious, earth-toned tented villas, ranging from one to four bedrooms, resplendent with Bedouin textiles and natural textures. Local design elements have been incorporated giving a very definite sense of place and each villa includes one or more private plunge pools as well as a spacious outdoor deck, perfect for appreciating those magical sunsets.

Make sure to keep your eyes on the art – which is a pillar of the Our Habitas ethos. Currently, the property is home to a stainless-steel sculpture by artist and sculptor, Khalid Shahin. In curation, Our Habitas partnered with Atlas Bookstore founded by Qatari sisters Fatma and Reem Al Sehlawi on cultural advisory, who assigned Studio Imara to support specific design elements and interiors and you will spot pieces throughout the property from up-and-coming and established local artists.

Distinctive Dining

Showcasing natural, seasonal produce, the resort’s one-ofa-kind dining destination, Qissa, celebrates Qatari, Arabic, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine in a farm-to-table concept with dishes such as Tamarind Sautéed Tenderloin or Roasted Cauliflower with miso butter, orange, sesame

crème, cardamom, nuts and seeds for the plant-based. The kitchen, which emphasises ethical sourcing and sustainability, is centred around an open coal and wood fired grill, which provides its own very special atmosphere for meals from breakfast to dinner.

Literally steps away from the rolling waves, the resort’s Beach Club is the ultimate barefoot spot for signature daily Sunset Rituals designed to bring guests together. With comfy Majlis-style seating ranged around a central firepit, it’s a veritable invitation to relax and unwind with fresh beverages, family-style bites and interactive mixology workshops, all while soaking in the breathtaking coastal views.

Wellness Journeys Abound

Self-exploration and connection with nature are high on the agenda at this haven for reconnection and rejuvenation, where wellness journeys seek to empower positive impact.

The Our Habitas Ras Abrouq wellness centre includes a state-of-the-art gym and longevity focused amenities. Inner Landscape experiences, designed for greater connection to ourselves and the world around us, include daily yoga, desert meditation, breathwork and sound healing for mindful well-being.

Underpinning holistic healing is a profound appreciation of nature and traditional culture. The wellness centre experience is curated based on themes of Movement, Culture, Inner Landscapes and Self Development with an

array of classes, workshops and lectures. Of course, the well-being experience also includes an impressive range of exclusive treatments such as vibroacoustic massage – in which powerful low-frequency speakers and transducers work in tandem with specialised massage techniques for a deep acoustic cellular massage – or the Camel Milk Deep Cell Regeneration Facial, designed to revitalise skin at the cellular level. Guests can also enjoy ancestral-centred spa treatments, such as The Pink Qatari Clay Heritage Ritual which begins with a frankincense and myrrh exfoliation followed by a herbal compress and finishing with a pink Qatari clay massage.

Adventure Playground

Far from the bright lights of the city, Our Habitas Ras Abrouq takes full advantage of its fabulous desert location to showcase the group’s emphasis on personal, experiential well-being. Guests have access to a whole range of complimentary daily activities from restorative wellness to stargazing, as well as stand-up paddleboarding and glassbottom kayaking to explore the Arabian Sea’s tranquil waters, home to dolphins and diverse local marine life. For those seeking a fitness fix, daily activities include guided snorkelling. There are also custom padel tennis courts or why not take to the waters to try kite surfing? And with the UNESCO-protected Al-Reem Biosphere Reserve, home to gazelle and the iconic Arabian Oryx,

right on the doorstep, there’s the opportunity for guided mountain biking, hiking and desert explorations to learn about the land's history and discover its natural wonders. You could also try Dune bashing; join a tour of northern Qatar taking in the fishing town of Al Khor, Al Zubara Fort, Qatar’s only UNESCO World Heritage site, and Olafur Eliasson’s remarkable installation Shadows Travelling on the Sea of the Day; or experience the ancient and thrilling art of falconry in the desert.

Spotlight on Art & Culture

While intriguing pieces from local artists are found throughout Our Habitas Ras Abrouq, the daily programming also carries a strong emphasis on Qatari culture welcoming guests with an array of activities including hands-on Sadu weaving workshops, calligraphy classes, clay pottery and the art of handcrafted incense making.

Located approximately a kilometre from Richard Serra’s iconic sculpture, East Meets West, guests can also visit this unique piece and become immersed in the natural beauty of the surrounding white dunes with offsite tours and excursions. In the coming seasons, Our Habitas Ras Abrouq is set to stage art exhibits, unique dining experiences, open air cinema screenings, concerts and more. The property is also working in close collaboration with Qatar Museums on showcasing significant artworks with a selection of large pieces due for installation.

The new GM of Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery Collection, talks passion projects and plans for the future.

Congratulation on your new appointment. Your most recent positions have been either regional or corporate with roles such as launching Accor’s first co-branded credit card in the Middle East and Africa. What made you decide to transition to the GM side of the hospitality business?

In my previous two roles with Accor, I oversaw commercial operations and played a key role in bringing our newly launched lifestyle loyalty programme, ALL – Accor Live Limitless, to life through strategic partnerships with our hotels and partners. As a dedicated hotelier with 12 years of experience in a regional office role, I came to realise how much I missed the dynamic energy of hotel operations. This brought me back to the core of

the hospitality industry at Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery Collection, where my primary goal is to enhance operational excellence and further establish MGallery as a leading luxury brand in the market. This hotel holds a special place in my heart, having been involved since its inception and launch. Returning now provides an ideal opportunity to fully engage with a project that aligns with both my passion and professional expertise.

How do you believe this role will differ and how have your previous positions prepared you?

My vision is to create a seamless and exceptional guest experience, ensuring that every facet of the hotel upholds the

highest standards of luxury and service. By fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration, I aim to elevate Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery Collection to new heights within Doha’s hospitality landscape.

As a hotelier at heart, I began my career in front office and food and beverage and, over the past 12 years, I transitioned to overseeing hotel performance from a strategic, high-level perspective. Returning to the hotel level allows me to engage with each department directly, ensuring that all objectives are achieved while simultaneously enhancing revenue, guest satisfaction and overall quality. Having overseen the performance of more than 90 hotels, I have gained invaluable insight into best practice, what works and what does not, allowing me to bring this wealth of experience to a single property.

What are your plans for the property – any new developments/ F&B options etc that you can share with us?

A key focus for us is revitalising the hotel’s restaurant offerings, with exciting renovation plans designed to create a more dynamic culinary experience for our guests. Currently, we have several engaging activations underway to highlight our dining options. In addition to enhancing our food and beverage offerings, we are making substantial investments in our spa and recreational facilities to continually elevate the guest experience. A key highlight is our stunning deck on the third floor, where we are focussing on O’Glacee, hosting themed nights and special events to create a vibrant and lively atmosphere. This summer, we introduced a unique initiative where pool entrance fees are fully redeemable toward food and beverage purchases. Due to

its success, we’ve decided to extend this offering and I believe we are the first in Doha to provide such exceptional value.

This is your first position in Doha, how are you finding it so far?

I have been visiting Doha since 2004 and, over the past 20 years, the city has undergone an extraordinary transformation. From the development of vibrant areas like Msheireb Downtown to the modernised infrastructure, the addition of world-class hotels and the state-of-the-art airport, undoubtedly one of the best I have experienced globally, Doha has truly evolved. These advancements have significantly contributed to the year-on-year growth in tourist arrivals. Qatar Airways, Discover Qatar and the Qatar Tourism Board have played pivotal roles in driving this growth.

What are your favourite things to do in the city that you would recommend to visitors?

At Alwadi Hotel Doha, we offer over 18 tours and activities. One of my personal favourites is the North of Qatar tour, which takes you to Al Khor, one of the oldest ports in the country, where you can witness the traditional craftsmanship of boat building. The tour also includes a visit to an ancient, deserted Qatari village, where homes were originally made from limestone and mud mortar, and concludes with an unforgettable experience at Al Thakira Nature Reserve, where you can explore the stunning mangrove forests.

Another highly recommended activity is the desert safari. While most Gulf safaris are inland, Qatar’s southern safari stands out with its unique coastal route, offering an incredible experience along the seashore. ✤

BALANCING INNOVATION AND TRADITION

Peter Katusak-Huzsvar, the new GM at Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel, talks coming ‘home’, the importance of teamwork and an intriguing bucket list choice.

Congratulations on your return to Qatar, where you’ve previously been opening GM at W Doha and were also Task Force GM at Sheraton Grand in 2015. What made you decide to return to the city and what are the most marked changes you’ve observed?

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! Returning to Doha truly feels like coming home. My decision to return was driven by many factors, but especially by my fond memories of opening W Doha and my experience as Task Force GM at Sheraton Grand in 2015. This city has always held a special place in my heart, and it has been incredible to return and witness its remarkable development over the years. Doha has evolved into a vibrant, modern metropolis while staying deeply connected to its rich history, which is truly astounding. The dynamic energy of the city, from global events to cultural activities and first-class hospitality, is inspiring. Sheraton Grand Doha has managed to stay relevant through a combination of tradition and modernity and I am looking forward to being part of this energetic journey again.

Over the past few years, you’ve received multiple accolades such as General Manager of the Year and the Stephen Garff Marriott Award of Excellence for Culture. Which means the most to you and why?

I am incredibly humbled by this recognition, but what I value the most is the acknowledgment of my team. No achievement is ever accomplished alone, and these awards are a testament to the hard work, dedication and passion of the people I have had the privilege to work with. The Stephen Garff Marriott Award of Excellence for Culture, in particular, is close to my heart because it reflects the values we uphold in hospitality –creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for both our guests and our colleagues. I was fortunate to walk alongside an extraordinary team on this journey of success and I consider myself lucky to have had the chance to be part of such a remarkable group.

You are known for your transformative style. What fresh ideas do you bring to the position and what can visitors expect under your leadership?

I believe in balancing innovation with tradition. It is my primary goal to respect and defend the traditional norms of Qatari hospitality at the Sheraton Grand Doha and to borrow from all the best practices around the globe. Guests can expect a perfect blend of international standards and Qatar’s renowned warm hospitality, which is the hallmark of the local hospitality industry. My primary focus will be on empowering our team to not only deliver exceptional service but also to anticipate and address any challenges guests may face in an ever-evolving environment. The guest experience will remain at the heart of everything we do, ensuring we stay ahead of the competition. Sheraton Grand Doha has always been an important part of heritage and I aspire to continue this trend where the highest quality of service is rendered in every dimension.

You’ve worked across the world, from Austria to China and from Europe to the Middle East. Where would be your ideal, money-no-object, holiday destination and why?

The snowy Alps in winter offer a magical experience with crisp air, clear blue skies and a peaceful yet adventurous atmosphere, which I personally love. Coming from places where winter is brief, you start to miss that calm, snow-filled serenity. For me, the Alps are the perfect holiday destination, balancing excitement with quiet, relaxing moments.

Do you have a surprising secret talent or bucket list item you can share with our readers?

One of my lifetime goals is to go heli-skiing in New Zealand. The thought of being flown by helicopter to the heart of a snowy wilderness in one of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes is exhilarating. It’s an experience I’m determined to cross off my list someday! ✤

COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE

Claudio Dieli, Executive Chef, Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay, talks hard work and a constant drive for improvement.

Having just joined the hotel in August, how are you finding it so far, and what has most impressed you about the culinary offering?

The experience so far has been incredibly rewarding. The food and beverage operation is vibrant, with a strong focus on delivering quality across every outlet. What’s most impressive is the deep culinary expertise of our chefs and their shared commitment to excellence, making it a pleasure to collaborate and innovate together.

You’ve worked alongside triple Michelin-starred chefs, such as Jean-Georges Klein and Christian Bau. What would you say was the most important thing gained from this experience, and how will you interpret it in your own kitchens?

The most valuable lesson was the relentless attention to detail and the constant drive for improvement, no matter how small. This mentality has shaped how I approach my own kitchens, encouraging a culture of refinement, precision and the pursuit

of excellence on a daily basis. It's about pushing boundaries to continually elevate our craft.

What would be your advice to any budding amateur chefs who might be reading?

If you’re aiming to become a professional chef, you need to be prepared to give it your all from the very beginning. Being open to learning and absorbing everything, from techniques to flavours, is essential. Success in this industry comes from dedication, passion and a willingness to put in the hard work.

What is your signature dish at Waldorf Astoria and why is it popular?

Our Business Lunch at Tribeca Market Restaurant is becoming a favourite, but the standout dessert is the Sicilian Cannoli. It’s a truly authentic version that’s rare to find outside of Italy, and its rich, traditional flavours make it a must-try for guests. The blend of authenticity and indulgence is what makes it so popular. ✤

CUISINE IN THE SKY

Hannah Nesbitt experienced the unique flavours of Japan on a visit to Sora’s Sushi Night.

Sora Rooftop restaurant is a Japanese restaurant perched on the 21st floor of Park Hyatt Doha Hotel in Msheireb Downtown Doha, from which it offers breathtaking views of the Doha skyline.

The restaurant offers a variety of themed nights throughout the week and an array of menus including Monday Sushi Night, Wednesday Ladies' Night, Sushi and Robata Night every Saturday as well as live entertainment every Wednesday and Thursday night and a brunch on Fridays.

The eatery presents a diverse array of menus, each thoughtfully curated by the head chef and crafted in-house to highlight the finest Japanese cuisine.

The restaurant’s layout provides a variety of seating options, each designed to take advantage of the varied views from its prime location. Guests can relax in the serene lounge area, enjoy the vibrant atmosphere at the rooftop terrace, with its panoramic city views, or choose the captivating sushi bar seating, where you can witness up-close the artistry of your meal being prepared right before you. The dark wood and golden accents indoors contrast with the light-coloured marble and tables on the terrace. Set against the backdrop of the Doha city skyline and twinkling lights, the hustle and bustle of the city below is easily forgotten.

Monday Sushi Night at Sora offers a carefully curated threecourse, sharing menu. The extravaganza begins with an enticing selection of starters. Served in small, traditional, individual dishes, we began with a comforting bowl of miso soup, its rich umami flavour enriched by plentiful amounts of thinly sliced green onions. This classic Japanese dish is the perfect way to warm up the palate.

A spicy kick came from the edamame beans, where perfectly steamed soybeans are tossed in a fiery chilli sauce, delivering a satisfying combination of heat and juicy texture. For a refreshing contrast, the baby spinach salad offered a light, vibrant option. Topped with parmesan and orange zest shavings, the combination of savoury and sweet gave a refreshing coolness after the heat of the edamame. The fresh spinach leaves were complemented by crunchy pomegranate seeds, creating a delicious flavour with a subtle sweetness.

Finally, the crispy salmon tartare was a highlight of the starter selection, marrying textures and flavours in one dish. The velvety salmon, chopped finely, is served inside a crisp rice nest, adding a delightful crunch with every bite. It’s topped with caviar and a tangy sauce that balances richness with a hint of acidity, making this dish a true standout before the sushi selections.

The Sushi Chef’s Selection at Sora is served in a spectacular array of sashimi, nigiri and rolls with plentiful amounts of ice and the obligatory dry ice for the ‘must have’ Instagram shot. It includes a stunning variety of the freshest sushi and sashimi, handpicked and masterfully prepared. Our selection began with a trio of sashimi: buttery tuna, delicate Japanese hamachi and rich, flavourful salmon, each skillfully sliced and laid on a bed of shredded carrots and cucumber for an added hint of colour. The presentation of this dish matched the exquisite flavours. The maki offerings showcased both traditional and creative rolls. The kani VO maki featured succulent crab, with crunchy vegetable components that add texture and freshness. The ebi tempura roll brought a satisfying crunch with crispy tempura shrimp wrapped in seasoned rice and seaweed. For those seeking indulgence, the Katsu Overload roll is packed with crispy, golden-brown katsu, providing a delightful contrast of flavours and textures.

A standout dish for me was the luxurious Wagyu beef roll. The tender, marbled Wagyu was lightly seared and laid on top of carefully rolled sushi rice, offering an exquisite, juicy, melt-in-themouth experience with every bite.

For nigiri, the chef showcased perfectly seasoned sushi rice topped with pristine cuts of seabream, salmon and prawn. These bites provided a well-rounded conclusion to the Sushi Chef’s Selection, highlighting the best of Sora’s sushi craftsmanship. If you still have an appetite after the feast, any of the sushi dishes can be replenished upon request.

The final course at Sora Rooftop features a unique twist on traditional Japanese desserts. The Japanese cheesecake was light and airy, with a subtle sweetness enhanced by a gooey strawberry compote that added a touch of fruitiness, perfectly balancing the richness of the cheesecake. Accompanying this was a matcha coconut and berry pavlova. The crisp pavlova offered a crunchy contrast, to the creamy matcha dressing. Topped with fresh berries, the beautiful combination of the sweet coconut and light meringue resulted in a refreshing yet indulgent dessert. Both options provided a delicious and satisfying end to the meal.

Whether seated indoors in the chic, tranquil interior or outside on the breathtaking rooftop terrace, the restaurant offers a relaxed and inviting environment, making it an ideal destination for sushi lovers looking to indulge in a sophisticated evening. ✤

HOSPITALITY WITH HERITAGE

Laura Morris took a culinary journey to discover the flavours of Azerbaijan on a visit to Emshoot.

Situated at the far end of the lively Al Wakra Souk, Emshoot exuded a charming village-like atmosphere set within Souq Al Wakra Hotel.

The outside illuminated by large, low-hanging traditional lanterns that cast a warm, inviting glow.

Lush greenery wove through the setting, creating a tranquil oasis amidst the surrounding hustle. Inside the courtyard setting, the walls were adorned with vibrant ceramic plates and intricate trinkets, capturing the cultural essence of Azerbaijan. Stepping into Emshoot felt like crossing borders, leaving behind the familiar and entering a new, captivating world.

Azerbaijani food is renowned for its rich, flavourful dishes that blend Middle Eastern, Turkish and Central Asian influences. So, arriving at Emshoot, we were excited to sample a selection of the new dishes being launched in the coming weeks.

Anuska, our warm and attentive server, greeted us with a friendly smile, while the vibrant seating and décor, an effortless blend of old-world charm and modern touches, created a welcoming atmosphere.

Without delay, we were presented with a delicious warm cracker bread accompanied by two flavourful dips. The Dogramac dip, a thick and creamy homemade blend of plain yogurt, herbs, cucumber, garlic and olive oil, offered a refreshing start with its cool, tangy flavours and hints of earthy herbs. In contrast, the Spicy Ezme dip packed a punch, with the sweetness of capsicum and tomatoes balanced by the sharpness of garlic and onions, while a slow-building chilli heat added an extra layer of depth. To accompany the cold starters, we were served a basket of

warm traditional bread, perfect for scooping up the vibrant array of dishes. The Mangal Salad, a smoky mix of charcoal-grilled eggplant, tomatoes, capsicum, chilli, red onions, garlic and parsley, offered a surprising medley of bold, charred flavours, beautifully complemented by the richness of olive oil. Each bite was a delight, with the soft, grilled vegetables balancing the bread's warmth.

The Choban Salad provided a refreshing contrast with finely chopped tomatoes, cucumber, red onions and herbs, all lightly tossed in a zesty lemon and olive oil dressing, while the white cheese added a subtle, savoury note. Finally, the Eggplant Lurma was rich and indulgent, with a creamy, chunky texture where the eggplant's deep flavours were elevated by sour cream, garlic, and olive oil – a satisfying blend of smoothness and earthiness. For the hot starter, we were treated to Gutab with Cheese, a thin, crisp flatbread filled with a delightful mix of two cheeses. Each bite was a perfect balance of texture and flavour – the golden bread crackled lightly, giving way to the stretchy, melted cheese inside that oozed out with every mouthful. The richness of the cheese was wonderfully offset by a side of cool, creamy yoghurt, adding a refreshing tang that enhanced the dish’s comforting warmth. It was simple yet utterly satisfying, a harmonious blend of crisp and creamy.

Our first main course involved an impressive tableside experience with the Cholme Kebab, expertly prepared and served by Chef Semy. The dish was presented with great flair – slow-cooked in a fired clay pot, which was wheeled to our table for a dramatic reveal. With precision, the chef cracked open the pot, pouring the

fragrant contents into a sizzling dish before our eyes. The stew featured tender lamb, chickpeas, onions, potato and saffron, all simmered together to create a rich and hearty meal. The lamb melted in the mouth, while the chickpeas and potatoes added substance and texture. The delicate saffron infused the dish with warmth and depth, making it perfect for cooler evenings – a true comfort food that felt like nourishment for the soul.

For the next main course, we indulged in the Beef Saj, served on a sizzling hot platter and accompanied by vibrant capsicum, potato and eggplant arranged around the sides. The dish featured a generous portion of tender beef, perfectly cooked with crispy edges and a soft, juicy centre. The medley of mushrooms, chilli, tomatoes, onions and eggplant was rich and buttery, adding layers of flavour to the succulent meat. The delicate balance of spices brought just the right amount of heat, enhancing the natural flavours without overwhelming the dish. It was hearty and satisfying, easily enough for two or more to share.

For dessert, we chose the traditional Baklava, served alongside a scoop of smooth ice cream. As expected, Emshoot had mastered this classic, with each piece offering a delightful balance of textures – gooey with honey, cinnamon and walnut, yet satisfyingly crunchy with its layers of flaky pastry. The portions were just right, perfectly satisfying our sweet cravings without overwhelming us at the end of the meal. To round off the occasion, we enjoyed cups of rich coffee, which added a pleasant bitterness to contrast the sweetness of the dessert, followed by a peaceful stroll through the charming courtyards. Our dining experience at Emshoot was a sophisticated escape

by the sea, offering a delightful refuge from the bustling souq scene. Each course showcased the rich flavours and textures of Azerbaijani cuisine, from the refreshing cold starters and indulgent hot dishes to the exquisite dessert. With attentive service and a stunning ambience, it truly felt like a journey through heritage hospitality. This meal was not just a feast for the senses but also a perfect way to unwind and savour the essence of the region. ✤

AN EVENING OF CHINESE INDULGENCE

AMS embarked on a culinary journey to discover the new menu at Ruby Wu’s.

As we descended the grand staircase into Ruby Wu’s, at the Radisson Blu Hotel Doha, we were immediately enveloped in a sense of grandeur.

Large, striking red vases lined the entrance, while intricate murals adorned the walls, offering glimpses into Chinese culture. We crossed a small bridge over a serene indoor river, the sound of flowing water setting a tranquil tone for the evening. Above us, red lanterns swayed gently, casting a soft, warm glow across the room. Our seats – grand dark wood chairs – provided a feeling of stately comfort as we took in the rich atmosphere. The setting was both impressive and inviting, a perfect prelude to what awaited us.

A Warm Welcome

Once seated, prawn crackers arrived almost instantly, served with two distinct dips: a sharp, fiery red chilli sauce and a vinegar flavoured with small chillies. The initial crunch of the crackers was a simple yet flavourful introduction to our meal. We were offered water right away, an indication of the attentive service to follow.

Starters That Impressed

Our starters began with the roasted Peking duck, an indulgent dish that was as much about the experience as the taste. We carefully assembled each pancake with tender, sliced duck meat, crisp cucumber and fresh leek, before drizzling on the rich duck sauce. The combination was a perfect balance of textures

and flavours – soft pancakes, succulent duck and the crunch of fresh vegetables all coming together harmoniously. Alongside, we enjoyed vegetable dumplings filled with Chinese cabbage, baby pak choi and black fungus. Steamed to perfection, these dumplings were light yet deeply satisfying, with the earthy vegetables offering a counterpoint to the richness of the duck.

Main Courses That Shone

When it came to the main courses, Ruby Wu’s truly excelled. The pan-fried diced Angus beef with asparagus and capsicum was nothing short of outstanding. The beef was tender and rich, enhanced by a robust black pepper beef bone sauce that added depth and complexity to every bite. The fresh asparagus and vibrant red and yellow capsicum provided a crisp contrast, making this dish an all-round standout.

Equally impressive was the steamed tiger prawn dish. Served with mung bean vermicelli and baby pak choi in a fragrant garlic sauce, the prawns were fresh and succulent, their sweetness complemented by the subtle, savoury notes of the garlic. The vermicelli soaked up the sauce beautifully, creating a dish that was both delicate and flavourful.

The fried rice with egg, assorted vegetables, spring onion and porcini mushrooms acted as the perfect side dish, its lightness balancing the richness of the beef and prawns. Every mouthful of the rice was fragrant, with the porcini mushrooms lending an earthy depth to the dish.

Meeting The Chef

It was after savouring the mains that we had the opportunity to meet Chef Austin, a master of authentic Chinese cuisine. Hailing from Dalian City, Liaoning, China, Chef Austin. spoke with passion about his dedication to representing the many regions of China through his dishes. From the hearty northern flavours to the lighter southern cuisine, his menu is a culinary journey across a vast country.

A Sweet Conclusion

To finish, we were treated to a selection of exquisite desserts. The pineapple tart, with its delicate pastry and vanilla sauce, was a lovely contrast of sweet and tangy flavours. The pandan pancake, filled with palm sugar and coconut, was an equally delightful finale. Soft and fragrant, it melted in the mouth, leaving a lingering sweetness that rounded off the evening perfectly. Overall, Ruby Wu’s delivered an exceptional meal, showcasing an impressive new menu that blended authentic Chinese flavours with modern presentation. Each dish reflected the expertise of the skilled kitchen team, with careful attention to detail evident throughout. The central location and expansive seating area provided a welcoming and elegant atmosphere, making it an ideal venue for both intimate dinners and larger gatherings. Chef Austin’s passion to represent the many regions of China was clear in every dish. Ruby Wu’s has not just enhanced its offerings but strengthened its position as one of the city’s leading Chinese restaurants. ✤

UNVEILING AN EXTRAORDINARY ESCAPE

Anantara Spa & Wellness at Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara offered a holistic journey of relaxation and renewal for AMS.

As I entered the spa's entrance, I found myself in an inviting reception area featuring elegant wood accents, soft neutral tones and calming décor. The atmosphere was soothing from the first moment, amplified by the subtle fragrances that filled the air. This tranquil ambience was enhanced by the careful design – minimalist yet warm, with a layout that directed my focus towards relaxation. After this initial sensory treat, I was welcomed warmly by my therapist, Ruma, whose gentle demeanour immediately put me at ease. She offered me a refreshing hibiscus juice and a cold towel – perfect touches that set the tone for an unforgettable day of relaxation. With a warm smile, Ruma handed me a consultation form, explaining that this would help her tailor the treatment to my specific needs and preferences. The form was comprehensive, covering everything from my preferred massage pressure to any areas of concern or medical conditions. Ruma patiently answered my questions and offered guidance as I filled out the form, demonstrating a level of personalised care that impressed me from the start. This attention to detail and commitment to customisation set the stage for what would prove to be an exceptionally tailored spa experience.

Aromatic Welcome

After enjoying the refreshing drink and cooling off with a cold towel, Ruma presented me with a selection of massage oils. I was spoilt for choice and could have chosen any, but one stood out to me – spice oil. As I inhaled the different aromas, it was clear that my body was signalling exactly what it needed. My muscles were calling for warmth and my circulation needed a boost, so the spice oil was the perfect choice for my Anantara Signature Massage. This signature treatment uses revered Eastern and Western techniques applied with a blend of oils, combined with wringing, kneading and stretching techniques.

Visual Serenity

Ruma guided me to the Aquamarine treatment room, which was equally magical, with floor-to-ceiling windows that allowed me to gaze out over the ocean. The view was calming and breathtaking, adding to the serenity of the massage. The therapist's skill was immediately apparent; her hands worked wonders. Every detail of my experience seemed to be thoughtfully crafted to put me at ease. Ruma was exceptional, with a clear attention to detail. She ensured the pressure was just right. I opted for a medium-to-firm massage which perfectly addressed my tense muscles without being overly intense. Her expert techniques melted away knots and tension, leaving me feeling thoroughly relaxed and rejuvenated.

Personalised Comfort

The therapist's commitment to my comfort was apparent throughout the session. She thoughtfully inquired about the room temperature, ensuring it was just right. This

level of attentiveness extended to every aspect of the treatment, from the pressure applied during the massage to the positioning of towels and blankets. It was clear that every element of the experience was designed with the guest's ultimate relaxation in mind.

Post-treatment Bliss

After my treatment, I was escorted to a luxurious relaxation room where I was served the most divine ginger tea, accompanied by dates and almonds. After a massage, that warm tea was exactly what I needed, leaving me feeling nourished and cosy. The dates and almonds were a delicious touch that rounded off the experience beautifully.

World-class Facilities

The facilities on Banana Island, including the Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, were nothing short of exceptional. The entire experience at the Anantara Spa was truly exclusive, private and made me feel pampered in every way.

This visit to the spa on Banana Island was not just a simple retreat – it was an extraordinary escape that rejuvenated both body and mind. It truly is a haven and I will look forward to returning. The personnel have masterfully crafted an experience that caters to all senses, creating a truly holistic journey of relaxation and renewal. From the initial sip of hibiscus juice to the final moments in the relaxation room, every aspect of the experience was designed to transport guests to a state of complete tranquillity. For those seeking the ultimate in luxury and wellness, this hidden gem stands as a testament to the art of hospitality and rejuvenation. ✤

Norway

Embark on a sea-bound journey around Norway for an overwhelming experience like no other. Start your cruise from a different European city, like the UK or even directly in Norway itself, and then sail away through majestic fjords, each framed by towering cliffs and adorned with cascading waterfalls. Become immersed in the stunning beauty of the Norwegian wilderness as your ship navigates the serene waters of UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord, an experience not merely visual but also brimming with an invigorating sense of adventure. Float across the water flanked by the iconic Seven Sisters Falls, where the thundering sound of the crashing water fills the air and the rising mist gently kisses your cheeks. Beyond the fjords, there’ll be stops across different destinations, such as Oslo, Norway’s capital, a modern city with a lot to offer from an eclectic mix of ancient and new architecture, and more. Then continue towards western coastal towns, like Bergen, with their own rich history and vibrant culture. Bergen’s colourful Hanseatic wharf – Bryggen, part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, offers a glimpse into mediaeval trade, while the lively fish market invites you to taste local delicacies. A visit to Stavanger unveils Europe’s best-preserved wooden houses and then also check out Pulpit Rock, a breathtaking vantage point. As your cruise ventures north, the landscapes transform into a rugged Arctic paradise. Engage with the Sami culture in Alta and try a thrilling reindeer sledding expedition across pristine landscapes. And, of course, take the chance to watch the Northern Lights, a celestial display of colours, from the comfort of the ship.

Many cruises also feature private island stops, particularly in the Bahamas, again ideal for families. For those seeking a more relaxed cruise experience, smaller ships offer a ‘resort at sea’ vibe, focussing on relaxation and luxury. On these cruises, daily activities shift from high-energy pool parties to more calm options, including yoga sessions, fitness classes and insightful lectures about upcoming ports of call. Also, ample lounge chairs by the pool offer the perfect spot for you to just lie back and soak up the Caribbean sun.

NEW FACE FOR AN ICON

Louis Vuitton has revealed the Neverfull Inside Out, putting a reversible spin on one of the brand’s timeless styles.

Aversatile design, since its launch 17 years ago, the Neverfull has been a staple of the Louis Vuitton woman’s wardrobe – it’s playful name a reminder of its impressive capaciousness.

Now the brand has given it a fresh face, taking this beloved bag and making it fully reversible, proving that Neverfull doesn’t have to mean never change!

With this inspired interpretation, the Neverfull Inside Out is both recognisable and, at the same time, fresh. Just as the name suggests, the bag can be flipped so that the original inside becomes the outside – the inside pocket printed with the maison’s signature stamp becoming a defining detail. Offering the ultimate in functionality from an adapted resistant lining, the Neverfull Inside Out is durable whichever way you use it and additional hooks on the larger MM size enable the bag to transform into an on-trend trapezoidal hobo shape. With a versatile strap providing different carry options, the Neverfull Inside Out MM plays to the ever-popular work-to-weekend vibe and, of course, being truly reversible, its style extends across both sides, the outside boasting the classic LV monogram with the inside showing grained leather in black and brown.

For those who love a splash of colour, there is also a gorgeous full textile version that combines coated canvas with fabric lining in three vibrant hues: Saffron, Red and Rose Pondichéry

(a deep pink shade).

The smaller Neverfull Inside Out BB, with a removable strap that’s ideal for cross-body wear, also has an interior zipped pouch that becomes a signature exterior detail. Compact and chic, it flips to leather in several colours including black, Dark Fango (khaki) and Rose Pondichéry.

And there’s more. A seasonal, upscaled GM size of Neverfull Inside Out with travel patches will debut as part of the next Flight Mode collection.

The campaign for the bag features of-the-minute face, Sophie Turner. ✤ GO: VISIT LOUISVUITTON.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

H&M introduced its A/W 24 collection with a spectacular party in London featuring music stars, DJs and the store’s own customers.

Marking a distinct refresh of the brand’s fashion spirit, the new season’s offering heralds a wardrobe of rich tones, intriguing details and design-focused silhouettes with each piece bringing together stories and inspirations that illustrate how each person wears clothes differently.

Styles echo across the decades, from the eternal glamour and versatility of mid-century design to the deep, sophisticated hues of wood and retro interiors and the beauty of California cinema sirens. For women, micro skirts and boxy jackets bring a mid-century mood illustrated in ultra-refined suiting, while flashes of vintagestyle opulence, including beading and studs, flow across knitwear, leather dresses and heirloom-style mesh dresses. Leather and suede pieces add to the sumptuous feel with premium materials that fit like a second skin. Knits include skirt suits in stretch wool and must-have matching vests and shorts. Look out for an array of browns, from caramel to deep mahogany with oxblood and green adding to the archival feel and black and white functioning as accent statements.

The mood of sartorial classicism, matched with opulence, continues in the men’s collection. Tailoring in oxblood or cool steel tones is elevated with directional pieces, such as a leather trench cut at mid-length or a shimmering lurex tweed workwear jacket. Items combine a spirit of utility with individuality – a message central to the H&M ethos of great fashion for everyone. Brand Director, Jörgen Andersson, says: “This collection is a celebration of who we are and a moment to reaffirm that H&M is always focused on great fashion. The campaign [featuring a diverse array of faces] is about liberating fashion and liberating self-expression – each subject twists the clothes in their own way and their own style. The message is that difference is power.” ✤

Need to Know:

Watchmen Chapter I is a 2024 American adult animated film based on the DC Comics limited series Watchmen. In an alternate world, when a government sponsored superhero is brutally murdered, it draws his outlawed colleagues out of retirement looking to solve the mystery, which then unravels into something much bigger than anyone expected.

Creators: Brandon Vietti, J. Michael Straczynski

Cast: Matthew Rhys, Katee Sackhoff, Titus

Welliver, Troy Baker, Adrienne Barbeau Joshua Bitton, Jayme Lawson, Michael Kelly

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Plainly put, the impact of Watchmen – the 12-issue comic book series from 1986, written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons –cannot be overstated. Highly respected by both fans and critics, its depth and maturity has been a major influence on so many other works in the decades since its release.

Watchmen Chapter I marks the third major adaptation following Zack Snyder’s polarising 2009 film and Damon Lindelof’s acclaimed HBO miniseries, which served as a sequel and won 11 Emmys.

This new project goes back to basics and aims for a more faithful rendition of the source material, but this time in animated form. It centres around the infamous vigilante, Rorschach, as he investigates the murder of Edward Blake, aka The Comedian. Rorschach suspects a conspiracy targeting former masked heroes but his ex-teammates initially dismiss his claims. As events further unfold, they must race against time to uncover the truth.

In a world of incessant prequels and sequels of various admired intellectual properties, which more often than not fall short in comparison to the original works, the creators here reverently do justice and excellently bring Alan and Dave’s comic book panels to life.

ON THE RECORD

POP

The Epilogue

The Epilogue is Australian pop artist Dean Lewis’ third studio album. It was written between his overseas touring schedule as a conclusion to this artistic chapter of his career, with the artist explaining he tried to “rekindle the simplicity of why things worked”. It opens on a sombre note with folkinspired track, Empire , as the singer slowly laments his loneliness before the chorus kicks in with an ironic cacophony of backing vocals. Moving through The Epilogue ’s singles: All I Ever Wanted, Rest, Memories and Trust Me Mate , Lewis carefully crafts soft melodies as he reflects on relationships and the impressions they’ve left on him. The album speeds up on I Still Do and Cold, as he ups the intensity lyrically and experiments vocally with higher ranges.

Ending with Clélia's Song and The Last Bit of Us , the album takes on a more conclusive tone as the music winds down to a soft strum in the background, letting the singer’s voice shine through.

The Epilogue speaks to the emotions that accompany the ending of an era, but simultaneously also hints at the start of new possibilities for the artist.

POP

The Great Impersonator

Halsey’s fourth album, The Great Impersonator , is a pop offering which pulls influence from various genres and musical eras. The singer reflects on her conflict with identity and illness as she travels across time with listeners and grapples themes like fate and loneliness. This is evident on I Believe in Magic , a touching ballad where she reflects on her relationships.

The singer has done a number of photoshoots across different decades, mimicking icons like Dolly Parton, Cher and Amy Lee to build up her image as ‘The Great Impersonator’. Letter to God has three variations on the album set in different eras of music (1974, 1983 and 1998), each has Halsey questioning whether she was always destined to fall ill.

Lonely is the Muse takes inspiration from early 2000s’ gothic rock in the soft diatribe at the start, which leads up to the booming chorus. The album concludes with the title track The Great Impersonator , which encapsulates the singer’s fight to find herself between her two alter egos, Ashley and Halsey. Overall, this release is raw and emotional at its core, evoking a range of emotions on each track.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Going Up In The World

The world looked on in amazement as drone footage showed a dog at the top of Egypt’s Giza pyramid, leaving many asking he questions – how did it get there? And will it be able to get back down?

The answer to the latter question was a definite yes, as the pup, later identified as a three-year-old pooch named Apollo, who lives on the pyramid complex site with his family group, was spotted nimbly descending from the great height, completely unscathed.

Ever since there have been reports of

‘influencers’ seeking out the pooch to grab pics with him and even someone offering several thousand dollars to make a film about him. Someone else apparently wanted to give him a home. We’ve no idea how true these reports are but it got us thinking that it’s a great shame stray animals have to do something incredible before some humans think them worthy of even attention, never mind a loving home. Our own country certainly has plenty of stray and abandoned pups who’d love a new family, maybe don’t wait for one of them to climb a pyramid before you invite them into your home.

That’s Nepotism Baby

Have you ever thought about following in your parents’ career footsteps? Or perhaps you’re waiting for your own kids to join the family business. So far, so natural, right? But what about the offspring of the great and good, and usually very rich, who seem to effortlessly enter super-exclusive, much coveted fields without putting in the groundwork.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s daughter, Sunday Rose Kidman-Urban (a mouthful if ever there was one) got some ‘nepo baby’ flack recently after making her modelling debut, not in a small-town

mall campaign, like many of her 16-yearold contemporaries, but rather on the Miu Miu runway at Paris Fashion Week!

Then there’s F1 driver Lance Stroll, son of billionaire Lawrence. In 2018, Daddy Stroll bought into the assets of struggling F1 team Force India (later renamed Racing Point Force India) and one of the existing drivers had to go, so young Lance could have a seat. Later Stroll Snr led a consortium to invest in Aston Martin, guess who now drives for the Aston Martin F1 team? Though, to be fair, the younger Stroll, at 26 has already been in the sport for many years winning his first championship in 2014. These are just a couple of notable examples and it seems the international media is busy calling out both parents and kids. We’re kind of torn on what to think. We understand the idea of joining the family business but this does seem a bit bonkers. What’s your view?

No Cash, No Thanks

The digital world has had much to say recently about the transition to a cashfree society but our recent experiences have led us to ask if we’re really ready. A recent supermarket experience involving a prolonged wait, while someone very slowly tapped into their phone to pay for a minimal purchase, had our blood pressure rising. Then, an attempt to withdraw cash with trips to three separate ATMs – the first removed, the second so neglected that the buttons no longer worked before finally grabbing our cash – hammered home our lack of preparedness.

The idea of a cash-free world sounds sensible until you take a couple of things into account. Firstly, there’s a very good reason that spy films always show intrepid heroes with a stash of alternative passports and wads of cash – it makes it harder to trace people if they’re not continually signalling their whereabouts with their digital purchases. Secondly, how often have you tipped a restaurant server in cash to ensure they actually receive the fruits of your appreciation? That’s not always possible with a phone or card payment. And, perhaps we’re showing our age here, but we have fond memories of childhood birthdays on which old maiden aunts sent us cards containing fresh, crisp bank notes – somehow, we don’t think today’s kids will get the same kick out of an electronic money transfer!
