Gear up and get your running shoes on as the worldfamous marathon, The Colour Run comes to Doha this month! Ready to spread happiness and health across Qatar, The Colour Run will take place on January 24. Dubbed the ‘happiest 5k on the Planet’ this will be the original colour powder race’s first time in Qatar with the help of Sahtak Awalan: Your Health First - the five-year educational health campaign run by Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q), focussed on encouraging young people between 10 and 25-years-old to make healthy lifestyle choices. The Colour Run is a five-kilometre, untimed fun run where participants – or ‘Colour Runners’ – can run, jog, walk, or even push their children in strollers round the course under a shower of coloured powder. In Doha the course will wind its way around the outside of the capital’s iconic Qatar National Convention Centre, lighting up the area with huge clouds of vibrant 8

colour as it goes. The fun continues at the finish line with a gigantic Finish Festival designed to create happiness and great memories. In addition to being tons of fun, The Colour Run also focuses on promoting healthy living. Over 60 per cent of Colour Runners are first-time 5k runners and the event hopes to help further Qatar’s commitment to improving health and wellness across the country. Exploding in popularity since its launch in January 2012, The Colour Run has become the single largest event series in the United States and is gaining traction around the world with over 100 events and a million participants in 2013 alone. The Colour Run events in Dubai and Abu Dhabi have continuously sold out, and Qatar hopes to achieve the same success. Colour Runners can sign up now at www.thecolorrun.qa. Q & A : M a r t i n K ay m e r

Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship will celebrate its 10-year anniversary event later this month. FACT caught up with the world-famous golf player Martin Kaymer ahead of the January 2015 championship‌ Hi Martin! Having achieved so much in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and other tournaments, tell us what keeps you motivated and excited about playing golf ? There is still so much in the world of golf that I am yet to achieve, and the day that I wake up on the morning of a tournament with no motivation or excitement to play will likely be the day that I stop. I know I have won three times in Abu Dhabi, but the thought of winning for a 4th or 5th time is extremely motivating in itself. My past success in Abu Dhabi is a great source of excitement for me, I love playing here and that gives me a huge amount of confidence going into the week. What are some of your cherished memories from the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship tournaments that you’ve played in? Having won the tournament three times I have some amazing memories of this tournament, and each win has been special in its own unique way. My first win 16

fact magazine

here in 2008 was my first ever win on the European Tour and is obviously a memory that I cherish as it gave me a lot of confidence, knowing I could compete with some of the best players in Europe. It really helped my career kick on from that moment. My second win here, in 2010, taught me a lot about myself and the importance of sticking to my naturally aggressive style of play and my final and most recent win came in 2011 and I remember it just as fondly as my first. It was, and probably remains, the best four days of golf I have ever played, I only made one bogey during the week and felt as if nothing could go wrong. How much have you grown as a golf player from 2009 till date? In 2009 I was only 24 so the biggest change to my game since then has come about as a result of my experiences. Since 2009 I have been lucky enough to be a part of three European Ryder Cup teams, won two majors, the 2010 PGA Championship and the 2014 US Open and

“Personally, I think that the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship is truly one of the best tournaments on the European Tour calendar.”

become World Number One. All these experiences have taught me important lessons about myself and my game, such as when to be aggressive, to stick to my natural game, and to approach any shot with absolute conviction. The fact that I went through a bit of a dip in form and managed to come back from it in 2014, was also very pleasing for me and shows how I have grown both on and off the course. What is the secret behind your successful career as a golfer? There are so many factors behind building a successful career in golf and sometimes these are out of your hands but one of the obvious keys to success is to work hard and enjoy the game. What makes Abu Dhabi and this particular tournament special? It is always great to win and I have some very special memories from playing here over the past few years of my career. The event is always well run and year-

on-year has a world class field which helps to make the tournament so competitive. Personally, I think that the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship is truly one of the best tournaments on the European Tour calendar and I am proud that I have been able to lift the Falcon trophy on three occasions. HSBC are a great supporter of European Tour golf and really help to improve the event every year so I hope I can put in a good performance in 2015 for the 10th anniversary to thank them for their support! Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? I wouldn’t like to set specific targets. I know I can still improve and I will work hard so that I do. If you were to really press me for specific targets, I would like to win more majors, play in more Ryder Cups and climb up to the top of the rankings again, but those are targets, not expectations. GO: The 2015 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship takes place at Abu Dhabi Golf Club from January 15 to 18. Visit www.abudhabigolfchampionship.com for more information. fact magazine

Get A Life Coach It’s no secret that getting on the path to healthy living and one where you’re really treating your body as your temple, usually begins with hardcore honesty. Most of us thrive off fast food and long working hours, and are quick to defend this corporate lifestyle with the reason of making money. That’s all well and good, but for those of you who want to start 2015 with a more balanced approach to life, there’s a fantastic health coach in Doha by the name of Nicole Van Hattem who has been through the ups and downs of detox, juice fasting, eating raw, getting in shape, and all the good and bad that life can throw at you when you’re trying to embrace healthy habits. All this, whilst working a demanding job and living a busy routine. Nicole suggests small steps such as a daily shot of aloe vera, an early morning lemon-infused drink of water, and a green smoothie a day to start your road to healthy living. She tells us: “Get a coach, it’s a complicated, scary road and you’ll need a cheerleader and bu**kicker along the way.” Visit www.therawhealthcoach.com for more information.

02

Perfect Your Posture In a city where 10-pound handbags and chronic desk hunch has left many with a troubled back, tired legs, or stiff neck, 2015 may just be the perfect year to dedicate some time to correcting your posture. There’s one anatomy-obsessed guru who is helping hundreds of people in Doha to do just that through her exceptional yoga and Pilates-based classes. Located at a studio in West Bay, Luz Alejandra Lovern has become the got-to pro who helps train you to activate your cores, breath properly, and 20

fact magazine

free your minds of the daily grind that tires your body out. Luz, a self-taught fitness and Physiotherapist, has taken Pilates and yoga disciplines and extracted the best from every angle, adding her own vision and expertise to create a slew of nuanced approaches. Her private, by appointment-only classes teach people about anatomy, physiology and how to bring out your inner harmony. For those who come to her confused about whether Pilates or yoga is the path they should follow, she guides them from the shadows letting their minds and bodies decide. “My students are committed and devoted to the method, when they leave here after practice it’s in so much harmony” Luz says. For those lucky to get a spot on her much sought after client list, make the most of it as this really is a studio for shaping both mind and body. Visit www.luzlife.com for more information.

03

Wellness The Yoga Way One of THE best ways to achieve peace, balance and a perfect bod is through the practice of yoga. We recommend Yama Yoga, founded by Valerie Jeremijenko, who works a full-time job at VCU by day, and shares her life long passion of yoga by night. Valerie has created a community in need of wellness and support through Yama Yoga Studios, where a stress-free environment invites people to come together and become happier, healthier individuals through the regular practice of yoga. The great thing is that the studio also coaches others to teach yoga, so once you’re all trained up you can do yoga in your own space and time. “They come, we teach them in the community and then they teach the community - we currently have over 30 trainers,” Valeri says. “It ranges all the time as most of these people have families and jobs; they do it because it’s their passion.” Last year marked the graduation of 150 individuals from Yama Yoga’s Teacher Training Program,

an impressive feat for someone who is also currently writing her second book! If you want to improve your strength, balance, flexibility and, most of all, discipline, then yoga is the form of exercise that you should be practicing at least three times a week. Visit www.yamayogastudios.com for more information.

04

The Personal Trainer Approach Have you been going to the gym but failed to notice any changes? Do you often feel like you’re doing the wrong exercises? Don’t worry, we’ve all fallen victim to the overwhelming amounts of machines and benches at the gym, and no matter how many inductions you have, having an expert trainer at hand whilst working out, is somewhat of a true fitness gift. Enter Dunja Jankovic - a glamorous lady who spends much of her time helping carve out Doha’s perfect female bods. The Serbian native, who grew up in Qatar, is making it big on the local fitness scene with her new coaching lessons. The 25-year-old quit her nine to five desk job a few years ago and headed back home where she threw herself into fitness and sports courses. After a few years in Serbia she decided to return to Doha and pursue her dream. “Women come to me asking for the perfect body, and I try my best to tailor make a program to suit their body and health needs; not every woman is created equal,” Dunja says. She repeatedly stresses that although people are busy with work and family life, a minimum of three times a week exercise is needed just to keep your health in check. She credits three wholesome meals a day to her figure as well as the cutting out of pointless snacks and a weekly change up of her exercise routine. One of her biggest inspirations is following fitness and training accounts on instagram to keep her motivation high! Email dunja.jankovic@gmail.com for more information.

HEALTH TIPS

HEALTH FOREFRONT When it comes to health, we all need a bit of a push in the right direction with our fitness, diet and even beauty regimes. Check out some of our fun and useful tips to get you started for 2015...

Fitness tips

number one

Embrace the power of 10

Ten minutes of walking three times a day has been shown to lower blood pressure more effectively than a longer 30-minute bout of walking.

number two

Take the stairs

The elevator at work or at the mall may be a nice convenience, but taking the stairs will strengthen your heart, burn extra calories, and tone your entire lower body.

number three

Choose activities you like

A lot of different things count as exercise: dancing, walking, gardening, yoga, cycling, playing basketball. To make it easier to get moving, choose whatever gets you moving.

number four

The hydration equation

Hydration is one of the most important aspects for a healthy and energised body. Try to achieve an intake of 0.033ml per kilo of body weight per day. For example a 70kg person should aim to drink 70 x 0.033 = 2.3litres. So make sure to load up on water.

Beauty Tips

Diet tips

number one

number one

Use a moisturiser to avoid dry skin. Find a moisturiser that’s oil-based, rather than waterbased, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion.

If your diet contains too much sugar, you have a higher chance of weight gain and tooth decay. Cutting these foods out of your diet can significantly reduce your risk of these chronic health conditions.

number two

number two

Having a hot bath during winter season does feel great, but the intense heat of a hot bath or shower can lead to loss of moisture in our skin. Lukewarm water is much better for a bath during winter.

Branch out beyond bright and dark green lettuce. Kale, mustard greens, broccoli, and Chinese cabbage are just a few of the options—all packed with calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc, and vitamins A, C, E, and K.

Moisturise more

Avoid hot baths

number three

Sleep on your back

Sleeping on your back will prevent many wrinkles and breakouts on your face. Sleeping on two or three pillows at a time, or putting a wedge pillow under your regular pillow will help get rid of dark circles under your eyes.

number four

Skin care routine

Follow a good skin care routine. Make sure to exfoliate to get rid of dead and dry skin that accumulates and makes your complexion appear dull. Use oatmeal as an exfoliator instead of a packaged product.

Avoid sugar

Go green

number three Mini-meals

Eat four to five meals or snacks per day, as it controls the appetite and your weight. Divide your daily calories into smaller meals or snacks, enjoying most of them earlier in the day; dinner being the last time you eat.

number four Reduce starch

You can save from 100-200 calories if you reduce the portion of starch on your plate and increase the amount of vegetables. Swap pastas with veggies!

1 2 S t e p s T o a H e a lt h i e r Yo u I n 2 0 1 5 FACT has put together a fun and easy-to-follow monthly chart for those looking to make small but significant changes in 2015, for a healthier and happier lifestyle...

JAN

JUN

Cut out fizzy drinks to eliminate addict-like cravings for processed sugar which can lead to a slower metabolism, hypertension and a number of diseases like type 2 diabetes.

Meditate or sit in silence for at least 10 minutes every day. Meditation can restore a stressed state to a relaxed state as well as making you feel calmer and more emotionally controlled.

FEB

Eat vegetables with your snack or meal at least three times a day to curb any unhealthy cravings. Swap crisps for beet chips, and buttered toast for whole grain flat bagel with fresh ricotta.

MAR Get your sweat on and exercise everyday - 20 minutes is all you need, and can be easily achieved with simple changes like taking the stairs instead of the lift and going for a short walk on lunch breaks.

APR Get at least seven to eight hours sleep every night, it’s beyond important for your overall wellbeing! Lack of sleep can lead to overeating and weight gain, not to mention an increased risk of heart disease.

MAY Go meat-free at least once a week and you’ll be doing your body a whole lot of good. Regular meat-eaters tend to consume more fat which could result in high cholesterol, blood pressure, risk of diabetes and digestion problems.

JUL Drink water and lots of it! Start by upping your daily intake to between two and three litres every day. Water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells, and keeps you from feeling sluggish.

AUG

Eat good fats and get your Omega 3’s. You can do this by adding new ingredients to your meals a few times a week. Things like salmon, avocado, walnuts and eggs all contain healthy fats.

SEP

Kick it up a notch with your daily exercise routine or workout at the gym by increasing the time or intensity. Alternatively, join a dance class or start a new sport to challenge and better yourself physically.

NOV Cut out foods with hydrogenated oils, trans fats and high fructose corn syrup. This includes some cereals, pastries, ice creams, sauces, cakes, dairy products and snacks sold at the supermarket - read the label!

OCT

DEC

Be grateful. Gratitude is good for your health and you should practice it daily. Be thankful every time you eat or snack, and when you put on those trendy shoes and fancy dress, being grateful will uplift your overall mood.

Get cooking! Preparing your own meals at home is a fundamental step to healthier living. By making your own meals you know what’s going into them. Start with simple-to-follow recipes - it doesn’t need to take hours.

I am proud to be involved in this Qatar-Brazil Year of Culture 2014 exhibition at Al Riwaq.” Here There fulfils a key part of Qatar Museum’s strategy of nurturing emerging talent by offering local artists opportunities to develop best practice by providing a platform for the exchange of ideas. 2014’s Year of Culture, QatarBrazil, has built on close ties in recent years between the two countries based on similarities including an economic boom thanks to oil production, each representing a diverse mix of nationalities and ethnicities, and, as previous and future World Cup hosts, a shared passion for football. As an artist, Amira never thought she would become an abstract expressionist. When she started her practice in Abu Dhabi two years ago, she focused on realistic oil painting, but she didn’t feel challenged, from a creative perspective. “I would work for hours and hours on a piece and even though it was technically good, I knew it wasn’t me,” she admits. “I was so stressed with getting the painting to look a certain way, that I would be frustrated beyond consolation.” One day she decided to try an abstract landscape using acrylics. Then another, and one more, and bingo! She found her love of art. “And before I knew it I was addicted to abstract art,” she tells us. “I’ve been exploring this style of painting ever since.” Art is all about colour, happiness and talent; and Amira kept trying until she found what makes her happy, which we commend, immensely. But, will she branch out in the future? “I really enjoy abstract expressionist art at the moment and that’s my primary focus,” she replies. And what about her favourite piece of art? “Tough question,” Amira exclaims. “One piece of art close to my heart, and still in my possession is Prayer Rug No. 2, it is a large four-foot-long abstract painting inspired by one of my favourite prayer rugs. It hangs above my couch and I stare at it often. It makes me happy to see the colours and lovely glazes, I’m definitely attached,” she confesses. Till date Amira has displayed her art at two exhibitions in Abu Dhabi; one at Art Hub and the recent was at Brighton College. She is in the process of working on some more shows and exhibitions but at the moment she is enjoying her ‘me’ time in the studio and connecting with her audience. Has she created her dream piece yet? “I want to create a large scale, colourful, textured, bright, vibrant abstract painting.” she says. “I’m still waiting to reach my masterpiece.” With artistic talent so strong, we’re convinced Amira’s masterpiece isn’t far off, in fact, there’s a good chance that this young artist will be producing many a great artwork in the years to come! Amira’s Tips for Budding Artists: 1. Start to sketch from life as much

as possible. It’s something I did as a kid and never knew how much it would come in handy as a painter. It’s never to late to learn how to draw, but you have to see it as something worth learning.

2. Understand the importance of values in a painting, and how they are used to create contrast and dynamic compositions. 3. Share your work even if it’s not great now, it will be at some point. Share it online and let people see it. 4. Make artist friends in the community and via the web. People closest to you may not get why you’re working so hard or why you’re not happy with a piece. It’s the friends that are artists who really come in handy both professionally and on a personal note.

5. Paint a lot; laziness is the worst thing you can succumb to as an artist. The artists that are great are years in the game usually. You won’t get any better sitting around watching them succeed. You have to get off the couch and make your dream a reality.

W

hat makes a good photographer? Is it the camera… or the lens… is it the lighting… or the subject matter? Or is it simply the years of experience? In the case of Bader Alwazeer, a Bahrain-based photographer, all those things, of course, play a huge part in his profession. However, when it comes to his photography business, Bader’s biggest worth is his wife, Khatoon Nasralla. “She’s my secret weapon behind every shoot,” Bader says. “She’s the one who styles the models, arranges the food, and takes care of all the important details, and I am so lucky to have this weapon with me all the time.” Bader started his photography business shooting product samples for local printing press, and very quickly realised that consumers bought into visuals more than simple text descriptions. “Like anything, you buy with your eyes,” Bader says. “For example I am sure at least 70 per cent of people will not read this interview but the photos WILL get their attention,” he explains. After achieving a BSc in Multimedia Studies in the UK, Bader returned to Bahrain and in 2010, with much support and encouragement from family and friends, he took his passion for photography to a pro

level. Being a photographer out of Bahrain, does come with its challenges, as Bader tells us: “The competition is very very high as the Bahrain market is very small, and some clients tend to go for cheaper over quality, so the rates just keep on dropping. “To survive these challenges, first of all we are not limiting our self. We are ready to travel to any other country immediately to do a photo-shoot there,” he continues. “Another way to tackle these challenges is to be good in different types of photography. Everyone in this business will advice you to specialise, I would advise you the other way, especially in Bahrain.” Bader admits that the photography business has its good and bad days, and it’s not the money, but rather his love of creativity that keeps him striving on. His Western-style, or what most would call more mainstream approach, to photography, has landed Bader clients like McDonald’s, Microsoft, Zain Telecom, Costa, Rotana and many more. Taking a trip down memory lane, Bader remembers that it was an Olympis IS-3DLX that made him fall in love with photography, and he gives a special shout out to his sister, Leena. “A special thanks to my sister for buying my first DSLR camera,” he says. “Without her I wouldn’t be a photographer.”

“I don’t like routine. I can’t stand it. In photography there’s no routine. Every shoot is new; a new model, new fashion, new food and a new place. And photography makes you meet interesting people – I love this feeling of freedom in the photography business.”

In Bader’s opinion, a good photographer is an artist, and a creative, dedicated person, not just a businessman holding a camera. It is this strong belief, and a keen interest in high fashion that fuels Bader’s future goals. “I would like to be a well-known international photographer travelling the world with Khatoon, my partner in business and life, and to have our full photography crew to do different assignments for big brands and big fashion magazines,” he says. “I want to shoot for brands like Dior, Burberry, and Chanel, and I’m dreaming of shooting Cara Delevingne one day, as well as editorials for Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar. That’s my goal and I will not stop reaching it,” he smiles. GO: Follow Bader on Instagram @bader_photo and twitter @baderphoto. Visit www. baderalwazeer.com for more information.

TIPS BUDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS TAKE NOTE 14

42

01. Learn the art of it before learning the technical side only. 02. Know more about what you shoot before shooting it, for example if you don’t know anything about the fashion industry then don’t approach a fashion designer saying you are a fashion photographer. 03. Buy the most expensive equipment you can afford, don’t go cheap. 04. Never stop learning! There is always someone, somewhere, who knows something new and knows more than you do. 05. If you’re getting into photography for money only, then you’re in it for the wrong reasons.

Leviathan

What’s it about:

A bleak drama where people in a remote Russian town are trapped by situations beyond their control. Drunkard Kolia lives in Barents with his soft-spoken wife Lilya and son Roma. When the towns corrupt mayor, Vadim, declares to demolish their house to make way for new developments, Kolia enlists the help of his old pal Dmitri, a slick lawyer from the city. But, the man’s arrival brings further misfortune.

Director: Andrey Zvyagintsev Cast: Elena Lyadova, Vladimir Vdovichenkov, Roman Madyanov, Aleksey Serebryakov Why it’s worth watching? It premiered at Cannes Film Festival where critics fell for the gripping villain; not any specific individuals, but rather the cold processes that empower them. Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev once again shows his fondness for, bringing to the screen, characters trapped in worlds that are so far from their control. In Leviathan he does this on biblical proportions. Here, fear and cynicism are more central to the plot, in which only the heartless people in power can find pleasure. Amidst all that is depressing, Zvyagintsev makes sure that while several of the main characters in this sprawling ensemble piece face the prospects of their lives falling apart around them, they’re never too far away from another shot of vodka and ramblings about their circumstances. It’s this rather surprising tonal shift and the fact that the filmmakers, and actors, assail Russian society from the inside out, that we absolutely adore about this film. A definite must-see!

Highlights “ In Leviathan he does this on biblical proportions. Here, fear and cynicism are more central to the plot, in which only the heartless people in power can find pleasure. ”

Taken 3 What’s it about: Back for round three, Bryan Mills, an ex-government operative is accused of a ruthless murder he never committed or witnessed. He’s out to find the truth and those responsible for why he is being tracked and pursued. For this, a special set of skills are required to find the true killer and clear his name.

“ Liam Neeson is amazing. Fact. That voice is compelling. Fact. Seeing him pull off slick action scenes is captivating. Fact (sort of). ” Taken 3

Director: Olivier Megaton Cast: Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen, Forest Whitaker Why it’s worth watching? Taken 3? When did this happen? And are we excited or are we cringing at the thought of seeing Liam Neeson take down the bad guys with all the might of law enforcement out to get him? Well, truthfully, we don’t quite know. Liam Neeson is amazing. Fact. That voice is compelling. Fact. Seeing him pull off slick action scenes is captivating. Fact (sort of ). But, are we impressed with the story? It’s somewhat predictable, following on from its predecessors. So, if you want surprising action then this will probably disappoint. If you want to see Liam Neeson be the perfect human being that he is, and escape from reality for a couple hours, go and get your tickets now. fact magazine

The Pinkprint By Nicki Minaj

Miss Minaj is back with a rap vengeance,

and you know what? It’s as fierce and amazing as her attention-grabbing music videos. Admit it, when Nicki’s good, she’s very, very good, and we’ve heard plenty of new material from her upcoming third studio album, The Pinkprint: there’s the big-booty anthem Anaconda; the captivating ballad Pills N Potions; the Soulja Boy featuring Yasss Bish!; as well as the catchy Chi-Raq. And, thanks to an accidental track-list leak from Amazon France, we now know that the 16-song record will feature the likes of Ariana Grande and Beyonce (fitting as Nicki recently revealed in an MTV interview that this album’s title is a nod to Jay-Z’s famous ’01 LP, The Blueprint). We can tell you what we DON’T want from The Pinkprint - no cartoonish wigs and silly costumes and definitely no guest spots from underwhelming rappers (*ahem Lil Wayne). What we do want is a back to basics Nicki Minaj with her unmistakeable cut-throat lyrics, aggressive delivery, and priceless zingers, just like her early days!

American Beauty/ American Psycho

By Fall Out Boy When Fall Out Boy made their longawaited comeback in 2013 with the chart-topping album Save Rock and Roll, fans, and needless to say, music-lovers everywhere, were quick to voice how impressive the record was (we still sing along to My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up) at the top of our voice!). So, when the four-piece announced, on the famous Zane Lowe radio show, that the band’s sixth album will be released in Jan 2015, it’s no wonder we felt a mix of anxiety and excitement all at once. The title track, American Beauty/American Psycho, is a wild song. In all honesty, it didn’t grab us like the previous album’s hits, but we’re secretly hoping it’ll grow on us. On a more positive note, other previews off the album, including Centuries, and Immortals (on the Big Hero 6 soundtrack), were more like the pop-punk stalwarts sound that loyal fans will appreciate.

“In all honesty, it didn’t grab us like the previous album’s hits, but we’re secretly hoping it’ll grow on us.”

It’s Kelsey Glynn’s 19th birthday and she is being escorted, by soldiers, back to her place of birth, to take possession of what’s rightfully hers - the throne to her kingdom. Kelsea’s character is truly, rebellious, and, like many teens, she has high principles and believes she knows better than her elders. Kelsea will either become the most fearsome ruler the kingdom has ever known . . . or be dead within the week. If you’ve just read something so epic as Game of Thrones, or something as gripping as the world of The Hunger Games, then don’t expect to be thrilled with this read. BUT, if you’re looking for light fantasy with a butt-kicking heroine then this is the book for you.

BIOGRAPHY/NON-FICTION

City of Lies

By Ramita Navai Interestingly written and brimming with insights; City of Lies consists of eight intimate written portraits of eight Tehranian souls. Navai reveals their lives, their times, and (more often than not) their crimes, at least in the eyes of Iranian authorities, in a city where people are seemingly living one life publicly and another privately. Navai writes that it’s a place where “truth has become a secret,” in a book that provides a rich, absorbing and exotic insider’s glimpse into the local personalities, the unremarkable busy bodies and hysterical intrigues buzzing about the city.

The Jane NYC Retro Chic On Budget

W

hen it comes to “budget hotels” in big cities, you’re probably expecting the regular cheap hostel or backpacker hangout, but in New York City theres one place that’s changing the face of budget accommodation. At The Jane NYC, you won’t have to compromise on comfort, location, atmosphere or amenities, and what you will get is excellent prices. The Jane is what you’d call a boutique rather than a budget hotel, however, its affordable room rates and praised service means that first-time visitors to NYC, or those who are looking for something cheap in price, but characterful in nature, are likely to fall in love with this place. The Jane isn’t fancy (and it certainly isn’t trying to be!). It doesn’t have huge beds with luxury duvets, but, it has super comfortable and clean pod-like bunk and standard cabin rooms with enough space for holidays and short visits. It doesn’t have five-star dining or 24-hour room service, but it has a fantastic homely coffee shop serving delicious pastries and other yummy treats, and it’s one that is frequently occupied by the city’s cool crowd. The hotel is located in the chic and leafy West Village, minutes away from some of the hippest boutiques, bars, and restaurants in the city, as well as blocks away from SJP’s front porch! This place is packed with history; survivors of the Titanic stayed here while awaiting the inquest into the sinking in 1912. The interior reflects a worn historic style with an added touch of warm and inviting bohemian chic, in the form of stuffed animal heads, glitter balls, mismatched couches, palm trees and a grand fireplace in the Jane Ballroom. Even the lobby staff embrace the throwback theme in their vintage bell hop uniforms! Not ideal for families, but perfect for couples or groups of friends who won’t be spending much time in their rooms anyway. For a little extra you can opt for the Captains Cabins which have en-suite bathrooms, king or queen beds, wi-fi, and i-pod docking stations. Some have Hudson River views too so you’ll definitely be getting your money’s worth.

Surf with high-speed internet access and enjoy an extensive in-room TV guide, video ondemand, and DVDs at request. You’ll have the best in amenities including the signature Heavenly Bed and Westin’s renowned white tea and aloe bathroom products. When it comes to dining, you’ve got 15 (yes, 15!) foodie choices. There’s everything from an authentic Greek restaurant, an al-fresco steakhouse, a Messinian taverna, a Middles-Eastern outlet, an ice cream boutique, and the outdoor-cinema incorporating Italian venue, Da Luigi, amongst many others. As far as free time

goes, you have the sea on your doorstep and a whole host of on-the-water and underwater activities; there’s a golf course; a stunning spa; a wide range of sports; and, best of all, the Navarino Outdoors programme which aims to help guests make the most of the unspoiled countryside around Costa Navarino through hiking, mountain biking and climbing. This is a family-friendly resort, as well as being a peaceful haven for solo travellers and couples too. It makes our luxury pick for 2015 because of its stunning and relatively unknown location, as well as the great facilities on offer for a really memorable getaway.

A stunning hotel, a gloriously sunny day, twisting roads through the dramatic mountains of Oman, and the entire range of Maserati’s 2015 models lined up, waiting to be driven. This could be heaven. Or, it could be Maserati celebrating 100 years of history in style!

56

fact magazine

When it comes to Maserati’s current ambitions globally, perhaps the most telling moment of the event itself was when I was introduced to the Maserati Quattroporte Diesel. It may shock a lot of you to hear that Maserati are now making diesels, because Maseratis have traditionally been seen as an exotic choice – an extravagance whose purchase is driven more by the heart and passion than the brain and sensibility. What the introduction of diesel models is telling us is that Maserati means business, and wants to compete with the Germans. It means that now a Maserati can be, not just beautiful and luxurious, but, sensible too. And for a diesel, the Quattroporte was great. It looked, felt and rode like a Maserati, but unfortunately didn’t sound like one. It’s like seeing Rosie

Huntington-Whiteley, but when she talks Katie Price’s voice comes out! Despite plenty of low-end grunt thanks to that torquey engine, it just spoils the effect somewhat. However, it need not concern you lot too much, because you will never see the diesel in the Gulf, so, moving on… Next I found myself stepping into the awesome Quattroporte GTS. Now this is more like it! The beefy 530hp 3.8l twin-turbo V8 emitted a glorious howl that rattled along the surrounding Omani mountains like angry devils as I engaged the Sport mode and powered

through the gears on the eight-speed auto with paddle shifters. It was lean, mean, and thanks to the 50:50 weight balance, handled sublimely, without ever becoming too jarring on the uneven mountain roads to Bandar Qiran. This is what a Maserati sports sedan should feel like in every way. It’s ferociously fast in Sport mode with a delicious growl from the exhausts, and yet in comfort mode it glides along like a dream. A truly beautiful car! However, it was not quite as beautiful as the next on the list – the jaw-droppingly gorgeous (and amply monikered) Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale Centennial Edition. Differentiated from the regular MC Stradale by that stunning red paint job, the Centennial edition nevertheless shares everything else with the normal MC, and that includes the Race button fact magazine

in addition to the Sport, which sharpens the steering and throttle response, tightens the suspension and opens up the pipes to emit a mesmerising howl from the exhausts, and the naturallyaspirated 4.7l V8, which puts out 460hp, and will propel the car to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds. Though this seems fast, for a car that looks this extreme, is the fastest in the range, and claims to be the road-going version of the Maserati Trofeo MC racing car, you can’t help but feel that it isn’t enough. A sub-four second time would have it stepping on the toes of the Ferrari California T. This is perhaps the reason why it doesn’t, and perhaps may do in the future now that Ferrari is leaving the Fiat stable, and is now a competitor rather than a sister brand! Either way, it is still one of the most beautiful-looking cars I’ve ever driven, or seen for that matter. Honourable mention goes to the four-wheel-drive Ghibli S Q4 - despite a smaller 3.0l V6 engine, it’s still a twin-turbo, so it’s still very fast, and there’s still a deliciously racy howl from the engine. Added to the superb handling and balance, it’s an absolute 58

FACT’s Five Favourite Cars For 2015 There have been a number of exciting launches over 2014 for the 2015 model year, though far too many to put on these pages. Here are a few of our favourites…

T o y o ta Ya r is We had the opportunity to experience this economy hatch recently, and we were honestly surprised by how much we liked it. From the styling to the bold new colours to the impressive list of features now available, this is a low-cost offering that gives great value for money on top of the added practicality of a five-door hatch. The 2015 Toyota Yaris hatch is everything you want from an economy car, and then some.

K ia Q u o r is Kia has been making waves in the automotive industry over the past few years, and it’s entirely down to great models like this. The 2015 Quoris won an International Car of the Year award from the LA Auto Show, and it’s easy to see why. With handsome styling that instantly impresses, great standard features, a good safety rating, and a muscular 3.8l V6 engine, the Quoris is the latest in a list of models that’s elevating Kia to the top of its game. 60

L an d Rover Dis c o v e r y Sport Land Rover don’t have a great track record with compact SUVs in the Middle East. The Freelander was very poorly received, and the LR2 fared no better. However, that is all about to change with the Discovery Sport. One can instantly see how Land Rover are tying it to the more premium Range Rover marque, firstly with the ‘Sport’ in the name, and secondly with the styling. The design cues inspired by the Evoque are instantly recognisable, and work extremely well. We think the Discovery Sport is going to be a turning point in the segment for Land Rover.

Mas e r ati Q u att r o p o r t e GTS We were lucky enough to experience the whole 2015 Maserati range late last year, and while the GranTurismo MC Stradale Centennial was the belle of the ball, our personal favourite was this, the Quattroporte GTS. To us, there’s simply no other premium sedan that straddles both worlds of luxury barge and exotic sports car quite so well. Comfortable in normal driving, and glorious in sport mode, the sound of the engine alone is enough to win you over!

Mercedes S Class C o u p e The Mercedes S Class is one of the world’s most luxurious and technologically sophisticated cars. What’s not to like about a sportier, two-door version? The S Class Coupe, which replaces the outgoing CL, features as optional the same pioneering Magic Body Control Technology as first seen on the S Class. This groundbreaking technology actually reads the road surface in front of the car and adjusts the suspension accordingly for maximum comfort. Incredible stuff! fact magazine

WOMEN

Patterns dominate with checks, winter florals and animal prints featuring heavily throughout. With enriched autumnal tones, splashes of bright and metallic giving life to the pieces. There’s a neutral palette collection dubbed Snow and a modern twist on classic tailoring, simply, called Grey, as well as a luxurious and decadent line named Noir, which exudes glamour. Here are our four favourite collection trends for women:

PREPPY

Preppy draws on its youthful influences to produce a colourful, loud and exciting collection. Clashing pattern prints feature throughout with unexpected bright hues adding fun, whilst gold accessories epitomise the look. Popcorn motif sweaters are teamed with a leopard print fur coat, boyfriend jeans and acid lemon courts.

LUXE TRAVELLER

Contemporary folklore meets winter tribe to create Luxe Traveler. With wild elements coming through from super plush furs and tribal drawn wool capes in an earthy colour palette with bursts of muted metallic and winter brights adding warmth.

PURITAN

Puritan combines mannish tailoring with an urban edge to create day to night dressing. Offering a fusion of checks, monochrome and animal prints, black on black is lifted with highlights of gold and 70

red. Playing with proportions and fabric within an outfit is key, with crop tops as hero pieces and shearling coats or leather on leather adding texture.

60s PASTEL

Being the most feminine trend 60s pastel presents sugary hues and animal prints to create a retro collection. Ladylike midi skirts are worn with brushed mohair coats in baby pink, blue and lilac hues and teamed with kitten heels in playful feline patterns.

MEN

Focusing on fabrication as a key starting point, the Design Team have dedicated their time to sourcing the right cloths to deliver a high quality collection whilst staying true to the modern silhouettes and trend-led pieces synonymous with the brand. Frequency brings monochrome to the front with signature clean and sharp silouhettes juxtaposed with a creative use of feature zips and metal wear to create an ultra modern feel. Some of our favourite trends include:

GENERATION X

Skinny denims in classic light washes, leathers, shearling and tartans are this season’s must-haves. These elements combine to create a clean modern take on the effortless cool of the grunge aesthetic drawing on the 90s youth culture and rock and roll heritage.

VINYL

Elements of clean tailoring and punchy

prints take inspiration from 1960s looks, reinventing the retro aesthetic with pops of colour in the knits and considered accessorising. Sleek, smart dressing with Mod sensibilities.

BLINDERS

Smart silhouettes exude quality through rich textured fabrications, elegant trims and classic styling. Geometric prints are dressed with traditional woolen fabrications and leather. Key outerwear items are the hero pieces in this trend, with classic bikers and a camel overcoat reminiscent of 1920s Chicago.

TECHNO FOLK

A lightly styled and innovative look taking inspiration from alpine retreats and winter expeditions with elements of metallic and modern fabrics to give a modern twist on urban street wear. An innovative approach to oversized large-‐scale patterns, printed textures and Pop Art are toned down with a strong base of winter white. fact magazine

CHEF’S TABLE

“Chef Nicolas enlightened us on his cooking style as we relished the steak: “More than half our menu is grilled using an open flame grill,” he explains. “Grilled meat is served in four different cooking styles; plain, pepper coating, basting and prime rib style. The rest of the menu is cooked by styles like braising, roasting, slow cooking; I aim to use healthy cooking methods,” he tells us.

B

utcher Shop & Grill stands out with its friendly staff, tasty and fresh food, and above all the satisfaction of a wholesome meal. Being meat-lovers, we knew we were in for an indulgent meal. With the Regional Chef in town, we were excited to have scrumptious dishes prepared by THE man behind the recipes himself. Little did we know just how delicious this Chef ’s Table dining experience would be… As Chef Nicolas prepares our meal, we walked in to the kitchen area to have a chat with him (the food already smelled inviting!). Intrigued to know the Chef ’s favourite ingredients, we dropped our question: “Truffles, Sakura Cress and Cheese definitely top the list,” he says. “I use high-quality ingredients in all my preparations, as they, by themselves give great value and enhanced flavour to the dishes.” As he spoke, our starters were ready and waiting. There was Chicken Coxinha; crisp balls stuffed with cheese and tender shredded chicken – heavenly is the word for this hearty starter. The Salt and Pepper Calamari was crispy from the outside and soft from the inside - perfect. The Beef Carpaccio was

succulent and the addition of capers gave it a zingy kick we’d never tasted before and we loved it! Before we could get over the yummy appetisers, the mains arrived; OMG we saw Beef Fillet steak with Jacket Potato on a plate and our taste buds jumped with excitement! Perfectly cooked, well-seasoned and delectably juicy, this main was a foodie winner. Chef Nicolas enlightened us on his cooking style as we relished the steak: “More than half our menu is grilled using an open flame grill,” he explains. “Grilled meat is served in four different cooking styles; plain, pepper coating, basting and prime rib style. The rest of the menu is cooked by styles like braising, roasting, slow cooking; I aim to use healthy cooking methods,” he tells us. Next up was the Veal Tenderloin with mushroom in a creamy sauce, YUM! The smokey taste with different types of mushrooms; black, Parisienne and Shiitake, made for a filling, earthy dish! We’re huge fans of mushrooms and this dish was a definite highlight. The Chicken Espetada was specially prepared and presented in a unique style, one which you might expect in an authentic Brazilian restaurant. With tender and tasty chicken pieces and crispy golden potato cubes, this was simply divine. Dessert had a lot to live up to and we sure weren’t left disappointed. Try the mouthwatering Chocolate Fondant - it’s sinfully good with chocolate sauce oozing out of the spongy cake. Then there’s the mighty Strawberry Cheesecake which was packed with flavour and lovely textures. Chef Nicolas shared his top tips for cooking a great steak: “It’s simple to cook the perfect steak; buy a highquality steak and cook well, sear it perfectly and leave it to rest after you grill it.”

We had a pleasant experience at Butcher Shop & Grill as Chef Nicolas and the super-friendly Restaurant Manager, Tariq, made sure that our tummies were happily full by the end of our meal. (FYI, we skipped dinner that day, dreaming of the our next visit to this impressive venue). Quality, comfort and value are three key ingredients that make The Butcher Shop & Grill a dining experience like no other. Pick up some fresh meat from the in-house butchery and cook restaurant-style in your own kitchen.

I use high-quality ingredients in all my preparations, as they, by themselves give great value and enhanced flavour to the dishes.”

Cucina de badir

My first Cucina De Badir of 2015 led me to a remarkable experience where I had the pleasure to team-up with Mexican native, Chef Salvador.

P

aloma is known for its Mexican food, casual and relaxing ambience, and fab service, and the venue played host to the FACT team for an incredibly fun foodie-time. Let’s get right into it, who loves authentic Mexican food? I know, I do! We get started with exotic, mango ceviche; the perfect seafood appetiser. I began cutting the fish into nice cube-sized shapes and later placing them in a glass container, to which I added lemon juice, salt and some oregano for an explosion of flavour. The fish is left to marinate for around 20 minutes in the fridge. We proceed with the exotic part of the recipe - personally, I was blown away with the results. I began cutting in a very small and thin slices of mango, adding some cucumber with skin, and green apple to the mix, and finally some coriander to the mixture. We covered the bowl and placed it inside the fridge to sit for about 20 minutes. We then moved onto making the green tomato sauce, which gives that nice, juicy touch to a proper Mexican ceviche. We cut chunks of green tomatoes, apples, cucumber, mango and added some coriander as well. Now, it’s ready for the blender! We checked our timer and it was ready to take that yummy fish out. Chef Salvador and his artistic abilities come to play when it comes to plate presentation. After so much chit-chat about Mexican food with Chef Salvador, I add the final touch to our starter - tamarind dressing boy, what a great taste. It’s sweet and sour, and we just can’t et enough of it. For our main meal, Chef Salvador 90

shows me how to cook a real Mexican Parrillada; you know what I’m talking about - the grilled, delicious stuff with some fried potatoes and grilled vegetables to go along with the meal. I take a lamb chop, some nice ‘carne de res’ and some juicy chicken breasts ready to hit the grill and oven. I add some white and black pepper, cajun, salt, and some adobo, to season our delicious food. I later slice some yellow and red pepper, broccoli, eggplant and some carrots, ready to be grilled! Yum, we are starving and can’t

wait to try this authentic Mexican dish. One of the great things is that every meat carries its very own chilli sauce, yummy! When everything is ready, it’s plated and we tuck in with baited breaths and hungry bellies. Perfecto! Last, but not least I was also in awe by our dessert and Chef Salvador’s ability to transform a very non-typical dish, into a very unique one. We created a Chimichanga with an ice cream as a delicious finish. We took the basic Mexican tortilla, added some crème, raspberries, and blueberries mixed

with apricot and plum, and rolled that tortilla for some frying time. After having a crunchy and hot chimichanga, I added some lemon ice cream on top and a bit of chocolate to make the team’s palate go nuts! And there it is, one of the most real, traditional, and tasty Mexican meals we’ve ever had! Hasta luego, nos vemos en la próxima en la Cucina De Badir… GO: Call 4484-4444 for reservations and more information. fact magazine

Doha Insider

What keeps guests coming back to Crowne Plaza Doha?

RECOMMEND hree cultural hotspots in Doha...

It is our approach on the single most important element in hotels – our service. We want to make sure that the brand service standards are delivered to all our guests. We also take pride in the quality of our facilities and amenities that exceeds the customers’ expectations. More importantly, it is our people who make a difference. We treat our guests like members of our family and that’s the human side of our service that allows us to respond to their needs. It gives us a great feeling whenever our guests tell us that they feel at home whenever they stay with us.

Anyone who is coming to Doha should visit the Museum Islamic of Art and you will find the Islamic art collection spanning over 1,400 years, truly interesting. I would also recommend going to Souq Waqif as this is de riguer for travellers and tourists alike. One will surely find something that will catch their interest from the traditional shops to the spice stores and art galleries. The restaurant selection is also varied and now is a great time to dine outdoors. Katara Village is also a good place for its cultural emphasis as it showcases the heritage and traditions of the country.
