2.0.1.8 Let’s Talk Resolutions
“
Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
S
omething that you might not know about the magazine industry is that, in all its glamorous glory, it really never sleeps! Being in the media, especially in the Gulf, is somewhat of a 24/7 dedication – from research and writing to picture sourcing, interviewing and mingling at meetings and events – this is one challenging and super demanding sector. So, when the holiday season and the New Year come around, it’s an absolute heaven-send that after all the chaos comes the calm and some well-deserved time to relax (just a little though). I have to confess, until now I’ve never really made or written down New Year’s resolutions – ever. Of course, like many of you out there, I have goals and a hundred to-do lists, both in my head and written on odd scraps of paper, that I often refer to for a quick reminder or guidance. But, for 2018, I did something new – I wrote down some resolutions (mainly something about eat clean, train dirty, less tech, more travel) and I’m hoping that putting pen to paper means that I’ll be able to make them stick – a girl can dream. With that in mind, we came up with 8 Resolutions Worth Keeping for 2018 (p25) – some big, some small, others fun, and maybe even life-changing – all things that you can enjoy doing in Qatar over the next 12 months. From picking up a new skill to saving money, there’s at least one thing that each of you can commit to doing for a better 2018! And if more travel is in fact on the agenda for you, what better way to begin the New Year than with plenty of inspo for your next trip. Cultural, naturefilled experiences await in Sri Lanka where Resplendent Ceylon bring boutique adventures to life (p35), whilst regional escapes call out from the shores of The Chedi Muscat (p47) and even right here in Doha, there’s a beachfront staycation with your name on it at InterContinental Doha (p42) – take your pick! The next few months are going to be busy in the FACT office as we plan the 4th annual FACT Dining Awards Qatar, ready to recognise all the amazing food and beverage outlets in the city – keep an eye out for the shortlist of nominees in our next issue and don’t forget to vote online for your favourites! I’m not sure how I’m going to survive an entire year without a new season of Game of Thrones, but it’s all the more reason for re-watch weekends and GoT gatherings – who’s in? In the meantime, I’ll just be over here on meme watch from the comfort of the couch. Happy New Year everyone.☺

CIOCCOLATITALIANI’S NEW MENU Located in the renowned Lagoona Mall and boasting a stunning terrace overlooking the iconic fountain, Cioccolatitaliani restaurant offers a unique experience for the palate with a wide range of chocolate-inspired menu items, with the emphasis on exciting taste, and a warm and hospitable welcome. CHEF ANTONIO RIZZO has introduced a totally reinvented new menu through which the guests will rediscover the taste of Italy, using only the highest quality and the freshest ingredients. “Thanks to the new items on our dinner menu, guests can experience an innovative selection and can opt for an exotic craving like the chicken and mango salad with chicken breast strips, fresh passion fruit, mango and strawberries and cashew nuts,” Chef Antonio says. “A striking ingredients combination to please the taste buds. Or a healthy choice with a thrilling mix like the quinoa and fruit salad, which is a blend of quinoa served with caramelised banana, fresh strawberries, mango, yoghurt and mint.” It is well known that Italian cooks rely chiefly on the quality of the ingredients rather than on elaborate preparation, so does Chef Antonio for the Pasta 3 Pomodori with handmade spaghetti dressed with tomato sauce, candied cherry tomato and vine tomatoes and also the Pasta Alfredo with Maccheroni served with parmesan cream and steed mushrooms. Another delightful option that has been exclusively added to the menu is the pizza, with its 10 flavours to match a variety of taste preferences. There’s the Margherita, Vegetarian, Salami, Bolognese beef pizza and many more, rich, textural and deliciously prepared with fresh and flavorsome ingredients. Completely satisfying without being heavy. Italian pastry is strong of its tradition and what dessert can compete with the mouthwatering Tiramisu, the Cheesecake or the irresistible Gelato enriched with the Fino De Aroma, it is a classic and exciting choice to bring cheer and finish on a sweet note. “The new menu is a fusion of flavors and aromas” Chef Antonio tells us. “Our goal is to be distinguished and bring a lot of joy and contentment into our guest’s food journey while visiting Cioccolatitaliani. We make the choice of the finest ingredients our priority and sustaining an unstoppable creativity and hard work in the kitchen is our key to come up with original exciting food, lusciously cooked and served with care,” he adds. “And we are confident that the new menu will be up to our customers’ expectations.” ✤

W Doha Hotel & Residences before an audience of valued guests, dignitaries and VIPs, including HRH Princess Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and HE Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways. The event was convened under the authority of His Excellency the British Ambassador to Qatar, Mr. Ajay Sharma. Emily Blenkinsop, Paws Rescue Qatar Co-founder, said: “This award means the world to us. Not only is it recognition of all the hard work by a very small team of dedicated volunteers, but it is also recognition of the huge issues faced by animals in this country that need to be addressed. Our hope is that we can use this award as a platform to reach those in power who can help solve some of these welfare issues.” The ‘Work in the Community’ Award recognises the invaluable work done by a business or organisation in Qatar to help the community. It is the first time it has been awarded to an animal-related not-for-profit organisation, and is a huge testament to the increasing awareness and importance of animal welfare in Qatar, although there is still a long way to go. Alison Caldwell, Paws Rescue Qatar Co-founder, added: “We are incredibly grateful to have won this award. We are the first animal not-for-profit within QBBF and now winning the Work in the Community award will (hopefully) put the plight of volunteer-based animal welfare groups at the forefront of people’s minds here in Qatar. “This award will also go a long way towards providing us the platform to continue to do what needs to be done to help the community and animals here in Qatar,” she continued. “We are always looking for partners to support us on this journey, such as building new kennel blocks in our retreat, and we hope this accolade will help to raise our profile, so we can start to reach these partners.” QBBF organises these annual awards to recognise business excellence and those members of the Qatari community who have made outstanding contributions in the British community. ✤

• NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS
2 BREATHE LIGHTER This one goes out to all the smokers who really want to kick the habit but find it difficult to do so! Frankly, it’s time to quit smoking. To be fair, this should be on the top of everyone’s list all year round, but New Year does make for a perfect excuse. We know it’s easier said than done, but once you make that decision, it is truly not as hard as you may think! The toughest bit is breaking the habit and so it is a good idea to change up your routine by, for example, sitting somewhere you don’t usually smoke or taking up a new hobby that will keep you busy in free hours. Whether it’s binge-watching a new series on Netflix or sweating it out on the treadmill, trying out your cooking skills or even meditating – finding what makes you stop thinking about the nicotine rush is what’s important here. If you’re not up for going ‘cold turkey’, as they say, there is aid at hand. You could invest in some patches or gum, or head over to the anti-smoking clinic at Al Gharafa Health Center (4417 4411), for anyone with a HMC health card. Other PHCC (Primary Health Care Corporation) run smoking cessation clinics include Omar Bin Khattab, Abu Bakr Al Sidiq, Leabaib, and Rawdat Al Khail centres to name but a few.
3 DONATE YOUR TIME
What better way to feed the soul and develop your character than by giving unselfishly to others? There are good causes aplenty to get involved with in Qatar. One that is fresh in everyone’s mind after its latest win for Work in the Community is PAWS Rescue Qatar (www.pawsrescueqatar.org) which is a fantastic non-profit animal rescue and shelter dedicated to providing a safe haven for homeless animals until they can be placed in loving homes. And if animals are more your thing, then there are numerous other groups helping our domestic friends around the country, too. 4 BUILD SOME MAD SKILLS
We mean expand your talent repertoire by learning something new! A language, perhaps? Arabic should be a priority for all expats, and for this you can head to the Fanar Islamic Cultural Centre (www.fanar.gov.qa). But, there are plenty of other tongues to be mastered so check out what classes are available at Berlitz (4455 0506) or Inception Language Centre (4412 6660) – to name a few. You could also learn traditional Arabic calligraphy in lessons at the Museum of Islamic Art (4422 4488). But maybe arts is more your thing. There are so many activities to choose from, such as learning an instrument, singing, amateur dramatics or film and photography. Or, if you head to Katara Cultural Village and enjoy one of the many art exhibitions, you could check out Katara Art Studios (bldg 19) where they offer workshops for a minimal deposit. If you like to cook, on the other hand, amazing chefs around the country offer cooking classes and tasting sessions. To name just a couple of the places where this is offered at certain times of the year, keep an eye on The Ritz-Carlton Doha (4484 8000) and Sharq Village & Spa (4425 6666) where chefs host group cooking classes with a sumptuous meal to follow. Of course, you could also take the outdoor-sy route and pick up diving, kitesurfing or even spear fishing. Go horse riding, play golf, learn to parasail or keep it simple and on dry land with outdoor yoga or even swimming. There is no end to the activities that are available to you in Qatar, so what are you waiting for?
5 TIGHTEN THE PURSE STRINGS Easier said than done in up-and-coming, pricey Qatar, but we promise it is doable! First of all, instead of going out and schmoozing all the time, why not have more soirees at home? Get a BBQ roaring and some music blasting, and you have a good night on the cards that doesn’t need to cost a week’s wage! Of course, one way to save lots of pennies is to stop eating out at lunch. Make it the night before and pack it up for tomorrow’s al-desko session. But, don’t let it be the end of your social life! There are many reasonably priced restaurants and bars to visit. For a cheap and cheerful dinner one of our favourites is Thai Snacks (Al Nasr Street, 4432 9704) with its cosy terrace and delicious authentic fare. A whole meal for two here comes to around QR50200. Another good eatery is Star of India (Al Khalifa Street, 4486 3708) where the very reasonable QR46 all-you-can-eat buffet is great. Our favourite spots for a reasonable night out are Trader Vic’s bar at Hilton Doha (4423 3118), Irish Harp at the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel (4485 3000) and Misturado at Crowne Plaza Doha, The Business Park (4408 7777). Don’t forget all the Happy Hours that run throughout the city every day - a fab way to save monies! fact magazine

6 BANISH
THE BULGE
After a month of gorging, only the luckiest of souls will have little or no belly bulge. It’s inevitable, especially when you keep telling yourself ‘That’ll be my resolution!’ (every year). But it’s not a problem this time, as Qatar has plenty of options to get rid of that muffin top in no time. Firstly, you have to decide to adopt a new lifestyle, rather than going on a ‘diet’ for just a short amount of time. Just a dash of healthy eating and a dollop of good exercise will do the trick, and you’ll be amazed at how easy (and addictive) it is! You could join a gym or get involved with a team sport or, simply go for (at least) a half hour walk every evening. Then, make sure the pantry is guilt-free. If you’re not confident to take the plunge yourself at first, there are some places and people to help! VLCC Wellness (www. vlccwellness.com/qatar), for example, will assess your BMI (Body Mass Index) and then explore customised weight loss options with you. Or, Slim’n lite Health and Diet Food Center (4432 3035) nutrition consultations and then will deliver meals that have been created just for you, straight to your door. So, go on then... no excuses!

7 HEALING
FROM WITHIN
To those unfamiliar with Reiki,it is a practice, otherwise known as a healing art, that originatedin Japan developed by Dr Mikao Usui and works to promote self- healing on all levels – physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual. So what happens during a Reiki session? Well, every individual reacts differently to a treatment. It works by channeling energy to the body which enables it to eliminate toxins. Your Reiki master will places theirhands onthe recipient’s body, and fromthe sensation they feel, they’re able to gauge the level of toxins within your body. Although some may argue the treatments make no personal difference, Reiki is not designed to give instant relief and over a course of treatments, significant changes can be seen inside and out. Reiki is a gentle healing therapy which compliments medical and other holistic therapies. To find a Reiki practioner in Doha who can perform the life-changing therapy on you or even offer coaching, follow Reiki Doha on Facebook or visit www. thehomeofdivineenergies.com which has a list of all the healing classes and therapies available.
8 INDULGE IN THE ORGANIC WORLD While many people are reluctant to change, perhaps it’s time to take a risk and try something new, so why not start with your food? Organic food and, more specifically, plant-based diets have become HUGE in the health world. Organic food is produced using methods that do not involve modern synthetic inputs such as synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilisers. Although the farming movement arose in the 1940s in response to the industrialisation of agriculture known as the Green Revolution, organic food production has recently reached a peak of popularity. On top of this, vegan lifestyles are being adopted more and more by people who come to realise that going green on their plates is ultimately great for their bodies. Luckily, many major supermarkets in Qatar offer up good organic food sections, whilst those looking for something a little more traditional should check out Al Safwa Farm (www.facebook.com/Al-Safwa-Farm-Organic), started by Parisian native Olfa Guetata and Al Safwa’s very own, Nasser Al Kawari. The farm is not only Doha’s leading farm, but the only farm which offers organic and pesticide-free products that are collected fresh every day at 5am to arrive in the supermarket by 9am. Going organic or simply cutting out meat for more fresh fruit and veggies on your plate, has never been as easy as it is in 2018! ✤ fact magazine

HELLO, SRI LANKA Bursting through the cloud cover above the teardrop-shaped island of Sri Lanka we’re greeted with a landscape of verdant green, where tangled jungle hugs up against long stretches of untouched coastline bashed by the incessant momentum of ocean waves. We touch down in Colombo during the worst cyclone to hit the country for many years, yet this tropical downpour marks a refreshing change from the desert climate of the UAE we’ve become accustomed too. As tuk-tuks weave between heavy traffic, Buddhist stupas and waterlogged roads it feels a world away from the ‘bubble’ we’re used to.
THE TEA TRAILS
Our first stop is Sri Lanka’s central highlands affectionately referred to as ‘tea country.’ We board a small amphibian aircraft from Colombo’s domestic terminal which once formed part of the original route between London and Sydney. Traveling skywards away from the capital, we head inland towards the conical shaped topography of Adam’s Peak, before landing on the emerald-coloured waters of Castlereagh Lake. one way) provides a memorable 25-minute experience, combining a spectacular vantage point and the excitement of landing on water, a sensible option when compared to a fourhour journey by road. Described as ‘the benchmark for boutique’ our first stop is Tea Trails, the world’s first tea bungalow resort which offers five beautifully restored planters bungalows in distinct colonial style. Ascending the gentle hillside away from the lake, we pass eucalyptus trees and dancing butterflies as the early morning mist dissipates over a tranquil infinity swimming pool. on hand to take care of your every need. It’s a more personalised service style than we’re used too but one that’s always paired with a friendly smile and the assurance that nothing’s too much trouble. Soaking up the tranquillity of the mountain air and a backto-nature approach, Tea Trails is more than just a boutique resort. Each of the five bungalows can be found scattered around the waters edge, but many kilometres apart, providing the opportunity for cultural immersion with a distinct luxury touch. Each bungalow has been flawlessly restored, with specially curated furniture that provides a throwback to the colonial summerhouses. Tientsin may be the most
grandiose due to spacious outside terraces, while Dunkeld presents a honeymooners delight with an outdoor jacuzzi, but the old-world feel of Norwood had us instantly charmed. Surrounded by tranquil gardens and the maze of tea plantations rising above, our stay at Norwood Bungalow offered an all-inclusive experience with a difference. A four-poster bed and free-standing bath tub take centre stage across the six bedrooms, all of which share communal living and dining areas and a large outdoor pool flanked by bamboo. Taking to the tea trails themselves is an enchanting experience as dirt paths meander through the tea plants seemingly unsure of the final destination. This is all part of the fun as we encounter school children in perfectly pressed uniforms and tea pluckers in bright coloured saris. Lost in the encroaching cloud cover amongst crumbling churchyards and nothing but the calls of nature, it’s a soul awakening experience and one that’s further enhanced by the property’s lack of television. Instead, we seek solace in fireside tales and the crackle of vinyl on an antique gramophone. With two per cent of Sri Lanka’s landmass covered in tea plants, we learn more about the process during an early morning visit to the Dunkeld Tea Factory, owned and operated by Dilmah who pioneered the concept of single origin tea in 1988 before branching out into the world of hospitality with Resplendent Ceylon. fact magazine
37
Offering the luxury hotel experience with a humanitarian objective, 10 per cent of the company’s profits go into the MJF Foundation, a support centre for underprivileged children in Colombo. Tea is understandably the inspiration behind the tea trails experience with a tea-inspired dinner menu designed by Australian celebrity chef Peter Kuruvita. Think vanilla tea mushroom soup, Moroccan mint tea encrusted lamb and tea-centric cocktails (don’t miss the Dilmah Dream). It doesn’t stop there though, with bath products containing tea sitting beside tea-infused massage oils (massages are undertaken within the comfort of the rooms by mobile therapists). Our stay in Tea Trails also introduces us to the novel concept of ‘bed tea’ with cups of freshly brewed tea brought to the room as part of the morning wake-up call. After two days, we leave the mesmerising lake on a long and picturesque journey to our next stop…

WILD COAST TENTED LODGE Dark granite boulders permeate through the vibrant green tea plantations as we follow the mountainous paths carved out by cascading waterfalls. We skirt along escarpments to our next destination, the Wild Coast Tented Lodge on Sri Lanka’s South Eastern Coast, a five-hour journey by road traversing mountains and floodwaters as we journey to the coast like some long forgotten tributary. Our journey is broken by a brief stop at the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home supported by the MJF and Born Free Foundation and an opportunity to watch the feeding of orphaned elephants. The Wild Coast Tented Lodge situated on the fringes of Yala National Park feels remote. An arid landscape with the odd flourish of green vegetation. Wiry trees with twisted bows provide shelter for roaming jackals, while crocodiles peer ferociously beneath floodwaters. Beaten by waves and lashed by the wind, the coastline is as rugged and wild as the name would suggest. On an isolated stretch of sand and accessed via a 2km track of red earth lies Resplendent Ceylon’s latest venture into the hospitality sector, the Wild Coast Tented Lodge, a haven in the wilderness. The immediate appeal of the domed architecture fashioned from bamboo components and mirroring the rocky outcrops of the landscape, is swiftly revoked by warning signs alerting us to the dangers of roaming leopards and the instruction not to venture outside after nightfall (unless accompanied by a member of hotel staff). The landscape, architecture and interiors has been designed and built by the team at Nomadic Resorts, and it surely is a feat of the ambitious. After seeing the rooms, or more accurately, the cocoons - it’s unlikely that you’d want to leave this gorgeous space in the day, let alone at night; they’re the epitome of luxury. The resort is made up of 28 cocoon-shaped rooms clustered in small groups around watering holes to resemble the pattern of a leopard paw if viewed from above. fact magazine
39
Nomadic Resorts have used natural materials which integrate seamlessly into the environment with bamboo and shingle imported from Thailand and the outer membrane of the cocoons brought in from France. If feels as though no expense has been spared in bringing a unique sense of luxury into the wild. The rooms represent safari chic and feature wooden chests, thick carpets, copper pipe work, heavy drapes, and a regal, copper bath tub that gives us all the instagram-worthy goals. Each cocoon is slightly raised off the ground like a mini treehouse and large windows are positioned to take advantage of the landscape and passing wildlife. The bark of a samba deer in the middle of the night signals leopards may be close by and the sound of creatures scuttling beneath our tented paradise brings some unease to this dubious city-dweller – but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I’m ALL in! Breakfast brings stories of elephants roaming into the restaurant late at night and with the current making it too dangerous to enter the sea, a brisk swim in the salt-water pool enlivens our senses for the trip into Yala. Yala National Park is home to the world’s highest concentration of leopards per square meter and the worn track beats our bodies into numb awareness but it’s all worth it for the briefest glimpse of a leopard perched high on a protruding rock amongst crumbling stupas, like a forgotten king surveying his lands. I take my picture, and we’re on our way.
SUSTAINABLE LUXURY TRAVEL Only a four hour flight from the Gulf, Sri Lanka marks a land of encroaching nature located South East of mainland India. Resplendent Ceylon also offers the tropical beach experience at Cape Weligama and a forthcoming resort in the cultural heartland of Sigiriya. The company is paving the way for sustainable luxury tourism in Sri Lanka, which may currently be a niche market, with the majority of tourists looking to beach flop in all-inclusive resorts on the east coast. But, for the luxury market, the adventure seekers and the culture vultures as well as those looking to explore Sri Lanka’s history and cultural traditions, Resplendent Ceylon provides an entirely new and breathtaking experience, one with a conscientious strategy and a humanitarian heart. ✤ 40

fter touching down in Doha in the early hours of the morning, my body was aching to sleep and I was concerned about how swiftly my check-in would be. I needn’t have worried as when I arrived some cheery fellow assisted me with my bags and guided me to their 24hr reception desk. Any previous concerns running around my head were swiftly quashed as I was advised of the breakfast timings and politely directed to my rooms location in which the concierge happily handled my belongings. My Club King Room was located in the newer part of the hotel and I have to say, it was great! I instantly clocked the 40-inch flat screen TV that adorned the wall and noted that it was equipped with cable channels. Although I had a run-down at reception there was also detailed materials in the room notifying me that my room came with free continental breakfast, afternoon coffee and tea as well as evening hors d’oeuvres. The king-size bed was definitely calling my name and I allowed myself to drift away into a deep slumber. As I awoke I had a mild feeling of pride that I was able to navigate the alarm clock in such a tired stupor, but, everything including the lighting panels were straightforward and effective. Looking at my room with refreshed eyes I was more appreciative of how modern and spacious it was. There was a separate toilet from the bathroom area which is always a plus alongside a separate wet room with a huge shower area next to an oversized bath. fact magazine

InterContinental Doha aren’t being evasive and haven’t tried to ‘reinvent the wheel’, but, they are clearly doing everything with the right amount of detail and quality. Before eating I checked out the gym facilities and they were perfect for my needs... A mix of machines and free weights but not too full of testosterone! The continental breakfast was delightful and certainly set me up for the day ahead. As I had access to the Executive Lounge I was appreciative of the fact that it included two trouser presses, which, after witnessing my packing skills, was most definitely required. I picked this hotel on account of its prime location as it is just minutes from downtown Doha and within walking distance to the Doha Exhibition Centre, City Centre Mall and Doha Golf Club. Throughout my stay the staff were all super friendly but not invasive. This was apparent when their reception kindly queried if I would like them to arrange transport a to attend my business meetings and I was pleased to find that they were all situated within a short radius of the hotel. InterContinental Doha features eight restaurants and bars that are all highly recommended, so you and your taste-buds cannot go far wrong whatever you choose. I settled on the famous Belgian Café and it was the ideal venue to relax at after the strain of the day. The staff at the bar were open for a good chat and kept me company whilst I was waiting. You absolutely have to try the mussels! Although I may have been on business, with the room perfect for the discerning business traveller, I did wish that my wife and children were with me, especially when I looked out onto the amazing family-friendly pool and beach area. Definitely a good excuse to return to InterContinental Doha… not that I need one! ✤

ould The Chedi be Muscat’s best-kept secret? An ultraexclusive hideaway targeting a clientele of worldwide jetsetters. It certainly appears to be the case when team FACT visited for a recent weekend stay. Unrestrained grandeur and high levels of service begin from the moment we touch down in Oman, as we’re transported via private limousine into the very heart of luxury. We didn’t expect The Chedi to be situated in such close proximity to the city centre but upon passing through the white-washed perimeter walls, it feels as though we’re miles from civilisation. The hotel lobby greets us with Omani charm as the scent of oud drifts out into the starscattered sky, while a collection of rainbowcoloured glass lanterns are suspended overhead painting a picture straight out of the stories of 1001 Arabian Nights. The Chedi’s architecture is Moorish in style emanating a sense of zen-like serenity and it’s this hybrid of Arabian and Asian that provides much of the property’s appeal. We’re gifted a handy map to help us navigate the expansive grounds and as our hands brush against door handles inlaid with mother of pearl, we know we’re in for a real treat...

RELAXATION GOALS
SUITE LIVING
With 158 guest rooms and suites available we had the privilege of staying in one of the 38 Chedi Club Suites. These standalone units sleep a maximum of four guests and offer the feeling of a private villa, generously-sized and tastefully-decorated in traditional Omani furnishings. Taking a minimalistic approach, the living area features majlis seating that easily converts into divan-style beds. The bedroom juxtaposes dark mahogany against the ample natural light streaming through the shuttered windows, while a king-size bed provides the utmost comfort, superseded by a silver dome housing a large Arabic lantern. It’s not all traditional though as modern
touches heighten the experience and can be found in the technological aspects - a Nespresso machine and two 42-inch flat screen televisions. The bathrooms are literally the stuff of dreams (#TubEnvy), with double vanities, separate rainfall shower and a sunken tub big enough to fit an entire family! Acqua Di Parma toiletries add to the pampering nature of the property and are almost as comforting as the slippers and robes which forgo the usual ‘fluffy’ texture in favour of a more kimono-like approach. The benefits of the Club Suite also entitle guests to complimentary limousine transfers, laundry service and a mini bar
Many guests select The Chedi as a hideaway from the world, if only for a day or two. With discreet levels of service and a respect for privacy, guests are valued in a way shown by few properties in the region. Set amidst tranquil water gardens inspired by the oasis falaj system, perfectly shaped hedgerows and curved archways, The Chedi is flanked by a 370-metre stretch of private beach and it’s refreshing to see a natural coastline in the Gulf unencumbered by the construction that blights other GCC cities. With three swimming pools on site, the Long Pool is a symbol of The Chedi used in magazines and on postcards for the best part of a decade. At 103 meters in length, the body of water is recognised as the longest swimming pool in the Middle East. Lined by slender palm trees mapping out the trajectory of the water, a polished black-tile finish adds an uber-cool vibe to the monochromatic stylings of cabanas and lounge furniture. Two of the temperaturecontrolled swimming pools are reserved for the use of adults only (the Long and Chedi pools) but the Serai pool, situated close to the beach is conveniently shaded for families with young children. fact magazine

Continuing the Zen approach, the treatment rooms are home to jacuzzi baths and steam rooms, meaning all your wellness needs are taken care of in one place.
UNRIVALLED DINING
Those in search of fine dining have six restaurants, two lounges and a myriad of cuisines to choose from. Breakfast is served in The Restaurant and offers both buffet and a la carte dining beneath Omani arches and crystal chandeliers. The Restaurant is also home to The Chedi’s popular Friday Champagne Brunch, a more sophisticated and restrained affair than the ritualistic party-orientated brunches of the region. For something a little special guests can opt to dine al fresco on freshly grilled seafood at the Beach Restaurant, which is one of THE places to dine in Muscat while taking in sunset views over the Indian Ocean. The Long Pool serves up distinctive Asian fare and represents our personal favourite of The Chedi’s dining options with the pool area taking on an ethereal quality after dark.

DREAMING ANGELA BEITZ DIPS INTO THE STUNNING WATERS OF THE UNIQUE VELAA PRIVATE ISLAND IN THE MALDIVES AND DISCOVERS A VERY SPECIAL RESORT THAT’S WELL WORTH A VISIT!
A
trip to the Maldives is always a special treat with the soft breeze, azure water and the ability to strip away any stress or worry. This is not my first time in the Maldives and it’s amazing how coming back a few years later conjures up lots of lovely memories and familiar feelings so quickly. Located at Noonu Atoll, roughly a 45 minute seaplane ride from Male airport, Velaa Private Island is like no other in the Maldives and boasts some spectacular features that really make it stand out from the rest. These include but are not limited to an amazing teppanyaki restaurant and wine cellar in a futuristically designed tower, a snow room, a sixmetre-high climbing wall and even a golf course. I arrive at the pier of the resort via the seaplane and am greeted by the lovely hotel staff who are super warm and professional, yet laid-back. Upon arrival I am offered a fragrant and fresh towel and the choice of bubbles, fresh juice or sparkling water. It’s these very small, chic touches that make the stay so special. But in saying that, what makes this resort so unique and why should you come here instead of other places in Maldives? It comes down to the seamless and top-notch service and the luxurious nature. Velaa have done a stellar job of seamlessly developing luxury villas without spoiling or taking away from the natural beauty of this pristine location. The property is perfectly maintained and is simply breathtaking. Service is personalised with a butler assigned to each guest who will take care of your every need, and privacy is also a big factor with the resort hosting a lot of VIPs and royalties but you would never know as everything is kept very discreet. Velaa’s mantra is all about moments and whether you’re playing golf or going diving, the experience is exclusive to you which really adds to the luxury element of your stay. fact magazine

Each villa, house and residence has its own pool and own private bit of beach which again showcases luxury and privacy. The rooms are super elegant and combine natural materials and Maldivian-inspired design features, as well as private courtyards complete with outdoor bathtubs and rainforest showers. We loved the thatched roof and the turtle paintings (Velaa meaning turtle). Every couple of years the resort shuts down for a period of time so that there can be small renovations and maintenance - so you can only imagine just how well kept this place is. If you’re looking for the ultimate getaway and total privacy, the Romantic Pool Residence is so secluded it doesn’t even have a boardwalk connecting it to the island, instead your personal butler remains on call to transport you back and forth, and attend to your every need. In the Maldives, it would simply be wrong not to visit the spa. Velaa has a beautiful My Blend by Clarins spa with overwater, ocean-facing treatment villas are connected by boardwalks, with an open-air sunken Jacuzzi, the Maldives’ only snow room, a flotation suite, nail studio, hair salon and relaxation area all leading off them. We tried the signature massage with was pure bliss especially laying on the very comfy massage table looking through the glass floor at the tropical fish. It must be said that the food scene at Velaa is super impressive. At each meal I was wowed by the choices and the quality not to mention the service. Athiri, the beachfront all-day dining venue really showcases so many different dishes done well including incredible Maldivian curries and excellent sushi and sashimi. The breakfasts are also incredible with loads on offer. Their teppanyaki restaurant Tavaru, is an incredible experience where you can enjoy mouthwatering fare atop the highest building in the Maldives overlooking the island. If you want fine dining then visit Aragu where you can tuck into local fish and lobster and premium Wagyu beef in a secluded overwater spot beneath the stars or within the high-ceilinged indoor space beneath an installation of illuminated flying fish. For an aperitif, with the most incredible beach view, head to poolside Ari beach bar where you can also watch the manta rays being fed daily at sunset. Velaa Private Island is undeniably one of the most luxurious resorts in the Maldives with everything on offer. The warm and attentive service is second to none and it’s not hard to see why the island has so many return guests. It boasts some of the most lavish experiences you can imagine but everything is done with a subtle charm that is elegant and not ostentatious. ✤

Revival
By Eminem
Make way for the real Slim Shady as the most prolific rapper of ALL time has just dropped a fire new album! After months of teasing, we were finally able to get our hands on Eminem’s ninth studio album and it has more than met our expectations. Featuring big names including Ed Sheeran, Beyonce, Pink and Alicia Keys, Em’s star-studded new record has been hyped up for a long while now – no doubt due to his stealth marketing strategies. Opening to mixed reviews, Walk on Water, an emotional power ballad has Eminem fretting about his own obsolescence. Featuring Queen Bey herself, the track pairs a softly crooned hook with fuming, escalating verses, reminiscent of his Love the Way You Lie era. A far cry from his previous controversial content, Marshall Mathers seems to be exploring a newfound wisdom. That being said, Revival has a high bar to climb to compete with the Detroit rapper’s past chart successes. As for us, we’re definitely stanning for life!
No_One Ever Really Dies By N.E.R.D
If there’s anything better than Pharrel Williams solo, it is Pharrel Williams rocking it out with his mates as part of the hip hop collective, N.E.R.D. Luckily for us, the American funk rock band is back with another glorious record! Featuring an impressive roster of guest artists including Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Gucci Mane and Future, this is the trio’s first full-length album in seven years. Bidding adieu to the warm, live-instrument feel of its early work, N.E.R.D. is all set to dive into a much harsher digital realm. Lemon featuring Rihanna trades live instrumentation for a rock hard beat and drum machine kicks. Armed with RiRi’s usual swagger, the track is a surefire banger! 1000 featuring Future keeps with the signature N.E.R.D. production. After continuously transcending genres and bringing new sounds to hip hop, it seems the band can do no wrong.
If you thought healthy eating was flavourless and boring, Bobby Flay has some news for you! The chef shares his secret to eating right without compromising taste. Using an arsenal of low-calorie flavour bombs including rubs, relishes and marinades, Flay transforms lean proteins, whole grains and fresh produce into crave-worthy meals with 200+ recipes.

Kia Motors demand attention with their latest offering, solidifying themselves as contenders in the premium sedan segment.
A
lthough it may seem lie Kia Motors have only been around for a relatively short period of time, in truth, the South Korean based automobile manufacturers have been producing cars since 1973. Their offerings may have begun as simple, safe and value packed vehicles, however they have advanced their creations to a standard that can comfortably compete with other premium sedans in their segment. The all-new 2018 Kia Stinger is a prime example of just how far Kia’s ingenuity and style have evolved. Designed in Frankfurt and developed on the Nürburgring, the precision German influence on the Stinger is obvious in both appearance and performance. This GT 4 Dr Sedan with a lift back feature claims to have high performance abilities on the road and comes complete with extraordinary safety features. With all that in mind, we at fact were most excited to see what
this new brand of automobile had to offer. Upon our initial outer body inspection, it was immediately obvious this car’s design is performance orientated and out right stylish. From front on, the corporate Kia tiger nose grille demands attention as its broad shoulders hint at the power hidden underneath its shapely hood. The design and positioning of the attractive LED headlights add to its authoritative appearance, whilst functional front vents not only contribute towards its sporty presence, but add value through the cooling of the breaks, forming an air curtain. Shifting our attention to the sides, the existence of further functional air vents confirmed the intentions of the designers to ensure this car is equipped for maximum performance. The sweeping lines of the body flow effortlessly from front to back highlighting the length of the vehicle. It is noticeably longer than its closest competitors such as the BMW 4 Series and Audi A5. The Stinger comes with 18” wheels complete with Brembo dual calliper disc brakes, providing both safety and control. The rear boasts an integrated spoiler, adding to the sportiness of the car and we were most impressed by the design of the quad outlet exhaust system. Slipping inside the cabin revealed to us just how low the Stinger sits. It was immediately obvious the cabin is both driver focussed and stylish. The materials used all appeared to be high quality and expensive. GT badges embroidered in the headrests add a touch of class and it was obvious the imminent drive was to be a comfortable one. The layout is one of functionality and convenience, with everything seeming to sit exactly where it is most accessible. There is enough storage space to satisfy everyday requirements and cup holders are present for your convenience. The infotainment system is not overly complicated and we had no problem navigating through its features which include a simple backup camera and parking assist. Due to the extra length of the vehicle, there is ample leg room in the back for three adults to sit comfortably. The boot offers 23 cubic feet of space, expanding to 40 cubic feet when the back seats are laid down. fact magazine

“THE 8-SPEED STEPTRONIC GEARBOX PERFORMED ITS DUTIES PERFECTLY, SEEMLESSLY FLOWING THROUGH
But how does she drive? As we pulled out of the parking area onto the tarmac, it was immediately obvious we were in for a treat. The meaty sounding 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 Lambda II engine was begging to be set free, promising a ride of wonders if we would only press down on the accelerator. The steering wheel felt perfect as we began to unleash the Stinger‘s 356 horsepower on the tarmac. Our bodies were pinned to the seats which seemed to hug us in a comforting embrace as we tested the ability of the car to go from 0 -100 kph in just 4.9 seconds. It was not a flase boast as we quickly found ourselves tapping at the breaks to reduce our speed. The autonomous breaking system proved very responsive and gave us the assurance of complete control over the experience. The 8-speed Steptronic Gearbox performed its duties perfectly, seemlessly flowing through the gears. The handling felt precise and the grip on offer was ample to ensure a smooth and exciting drive. By the time we finished our test drive, we had no doubt Kia are now solid competitors in the premium sedan market and are set to surprise many avid car enthusiast looking for a novel driving experience. ✤

HER The influence of tailoring is evident in the collection, garments are reimagined with a modern twist; a wool blend suit in burgundy features menswear-inspired voluminous slacks that drape at the feet, a tailored wool blend top with zip detail is paired with a silk ivory shirt and a long deconstructed sleeveless waistcoat feels effortless in a relaxed, unstructured material. Taking its inspiration from the lines of architecture and industrial references, the collection experiments with the proportion of silhouettes and details – featuring exaggerated lapels, cuffs and vents, sharp pleats inspired by press folds and the use of geometric shapes. Bold forms are complemented by innovative and technical materials inspired by experimental art and design. Fabrics are clean and compact, whilst draped and cut in interesting ways. Accessories are inventive and forward-thinking: deep red square toed lace-up shoes with a geometric heel take centre stage alongside a structured leather shoulder bag and belt with exaggerated buckle – in the same distinctive red hue. ✤

HIM The focus on reinventing classics continues in menswear, taking a fresh and casual approach. A wool blend grey melange coat is given an effortless twist with rounded shoulders whilst a relaxed cotton poplin shirt in oatmeal is tucked into flat-front wide-legged wool trousers, revealing an updated and modern silhouette that accentuates the waist and shoulders. The urban theme is exemplified in an oversized cotton utility shirt jacket in midnight green, paired alongside wide cropped trousers with a dropped crotch in the same deep shade. A long quilted technical parka highlights the focus on new materials and the significance of bold shapes in the collection. The nod to architecture is referenced in the collection’s industrial palette of slate blue, charcoal grey, midnight green and cream. The tones are offset by a strong presence of red, inspired by the Italian architecture studio Pedevilla’s use of red-pigmented concrete at a Tyrolean fire station. Outfits are styled together with tonal colour blocking and dark shades that create undefined border lines. ✤

Weekend Vibes at WAHM Saturday brunches are fast establishing themselves as a concept in Doha and they’re popping up as a cheaper more relaxed alternative to the big all-out extravaganzas of Friday afternoons. I
n budget conscious times, a brunch can be quite an expense. That’s why a brunch that gets the family or a bunch of friends together at the weekend and provides the key ingredients to a good time, without blowing the bank balance, is a very welcome thing. This is EXACTLY what we found at the beautiful Wahm in W Doha Hotel & Residences. The W Doha is known for its modern, yet decadent vibe with a sense of urban chic. It’s also home to three of my favourite restaurants and the fabulous W Café, but it’s in the perhaps most unlikely location that their Saturday Brunch is getting people talking. I’m, of course, referring to Wahm - the poolside lounge with outdoor terrace. Most nights, a DJ is dropping some serious beats and the very stylish and sophisticated descend on this venue to dance and chill. I have to confess that walking into this venue at 12 noon and not 12 midnight was a first, albeit a refreshing change to see it in the daylight and still a very inviting vibe. It felt right! There are three simple parts to this brunch. Eat, sip and dip! Priced at QR210 for unlimited food without selected sips and QR275 for food with selected beverages, you are offered a W standard of hospitality at a very competitive price. There are popup food stations parked around the terrace like a fairground offering different options. There was a stand which served up freshlycooked chicken tandoori and besides it was a kebab and burger station – ideal for our carnivorous cravings. Another stall offered up meat and seafood that could be freshly prepared to order and brought over to you when ready – delicious. I started with the shawarma counter where a lamb shawarma was rustled up while I watched and I also got a tasty beef pizza for round one. If that sounds meat heavy, fear not. For the health conscious guests, there’s one food station packed with colourful vegetables like corn, beets and more. The drinks station did many elaborate things with fruit keeping everyone reliably refreshed throughout the afternoon. I understood the eat and the sip part – and did the two pretty well – but the dip bit had me curious!

This is a wellpriced, high quality and informal outdoor brunch that is absolutely worth a try. It doesn’t run in the summer when it’s too darn hot so make the most of it while the weather is gorgeous.
The posey pool looks very inviting however, with it being December, I can’t say I saw anyone popping in for a splash to work up an appetite or cool off after the eating and the sipping. As the temperature slides up again in the next few months, I can quite see the potential for some late afternoon lounging both in the pool and in the comfy, cosy cabanas dotted around it. A lot of people tell me that after a hard week stuck indoors in the sterile confines of an office, they want to let loose, feel a little breeze and enjoy being outdoors. I quite agree with them and this Saturday Brunch does an excellent job of blending both the culinary and the relaxation needs of diners. N
estled in the inner-cube of the imposing InterContinental Doha The City skyscraper in the city centre, is a courtyard that is home to Al Jalsa Garden Lounge. It has quickly earned a reputation as well as a strong and loyal following. It was my second visit to the venue this year and I was pleasantly pleased to see how busy it was, and yet it didn’t feel noisy or overcrowded. The best thing about it was surely that we could sit outside. If you’re worried about getting chilly on these cold winter nights, fear not, there are patio heaters so no need to wear thermals! It was like walking into an Arabic living room inspired by the style of Moroccan lounges where you can sit casually with shisha or choose from the wide selection of hot and cold dishes. There are conventional tables and chairs or you can snuggle into one of the closed off squares with the Arabicstyle settees with cushions. The atmosphere is great; it’s dark but not too dark and there are subtle features that add to the ambience like water fountains and a mini river coursing through the middle of the ‘garden lounge’ with a cute bridge that you have to cross. This place is a great blend of outdoor simplicity and Gulf opulence. Each table is always filled with food while you sit relaxed ensconced in cushions on comfortable seating, feeling the light breeze brush past you. The food was amazing. Dishes that you may see a hundred or more times are cooked to a particularly high standard with simple but effective seasoning and quality produce is assured. Their soups are not a rushed appetiser, but a tasty treat to tickle the taste buds and guaranteed winter warmers. Try the lentil soup - it’s divine. The cold mezze is utterly excellent with the tangy baba ganoush and ample hummuos, moutabel, fattoush and kebbeh. How often do you see these things on a menu, but honestly, this is many times better than your average! Their breads are very good too. If, like me, you love your sambusek, then you won’t be disappointed by their meat and cheese sambusek. I couldn’t get enough. The sauteed prawns marinated in garlic, lemon and tomato sauce were a worthwhile choice too. Order the mixed grill and you’ll be served a tremendous platter of chicken shish taouk, grilled meat and tasty lamb chops – a true carnivorous feast to satisfy all your cravings. The dessert can be quite the climax to the menu, and your evening, with a range of Arabic sweets

How often do you see these things on a menu, but honestly, this is many times better than your average! but the traditional umm ali cooked with honey is sumptuous to say the least. Or if you don’t think you have room for anything sweet, you can just chill with an impressively wide and sophisticated selection of shisha flavours. Al Jalsa Garden Lounge is open for an express lunch, a business meeting with tea and light snacks, or an evening with food and drink in a great setting to just chill. We’ll be back really soon! ✤

T
he large capacity Corniche restaurant hosts a spectacular seafood buffet that should be right up your street if you like good fish and other marine produce. This place was quickly filled up and it can only be a good sign that so many people have come to enjoy this food spread. For those looking to begin with something light, fresh and super tasty – you need to head towards the salad station. I started with a plate of fresh greens which all had a fish theme. There was tuna and potatoes, octopus salad and a delicious prawn and pomelo salad too among many others. The sushi was a touch limited but it was still rather sumptuous and a few little twists made it moreish and addictive. There was also a giant pot with a hot and homely seafood chowder, something that is often hard to find in this part of the world. I hadn’t had a chowder this good since I was last in Ireland so props to the culinary team at the Doha Marriott. There was also a seafood linguine and an even a paella, adding to the hot main offerings which definitely warmed us up with piping hot flavours. Word of warning though: pace yourself. For me, the treasure part to this seafood night was the side room just off from the main buffet where a row of rather imposing-looking fish stared back at me. The chefs stand by guarding their gold ready to cook it fresh for you. There was local offerings like hammour but also rarer choices like the yellow snapper and crabs, alongside the ever-popular shrimp. The executive chef informed me that they have a contract with a reliable supplier who ensures that the hotel receives the best and freshest catch of whatever is in the sea right now – therefore, the options in this room can change from week to week

depending on what is caught. A lot of the fish they catch comes from the waters just off Oman, which means that you’re bound to get a great selection. I got a large crab, some salmon and a little yellow snapper which was fully gutted and the head was removed. All were cooked to my liking and the crab especially was beautiful to taste. There was some calamari too which we had grilled – it’s not fried, much to our pleasant surprise. This was a first for my palate and would definitely have gone back for seconds had it not been for the mouthwatering mussels which were proving a real hit with the crowd. This is a very family-friendly affair which was noticeable in the many tables packed with parents and kids – little ones were free to play and enjoy their time too! A buffet event means that you can keep getting up and going back for as much as you want to try – this is an encouraging social aspect for people making an evening of it. However, in case there is anyone in your group who isn’t too fussed about seafood, the venue also has a first-class a la carte menu, catering to every diner. Friday Seascape is definitely one to put on your 2018 foodie bucket list in Doha! ✤

and is meticulously presented which really heightens the overall experience. We were that impressed with said presentation that all of us went quiet and joined in posting across various social media platforms, which is a rare thing for some of the team. The menu ranges from sushi, sashimi and handmade dim sum to curry dishes, grilled entrees, and wok items. Our favourite dish was undoubtedly the tender Beef Short Ribs which was the most perfect thing to have blessed our palates, as it just melted into our tastebuds but more importantly our memories. The floor-to-ceiling windows allow a dark romantic vibe to ensue which is perfect for any date night and proved a perfect conversation starter after over-indulging on the chocolateygooey goodness that arose for dessert in the form of Chili Chocolate Pudding. Our dinner was overseen by Asianmotifed vases and other ornate objects lining the walls acting as a finishing embellishment to the resounding hallmark of manicured perfection. We’ve already arranged our next visit, and you should too! ✤

• SPA & WELLNESS
To HEAVEN and BACK! We take you on a quick escape into Doha’s serene downtown sanctuary that is Heavenly Spa at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa, to experience the sublime results of a traditional Moroccan-style ritual.
T
he Moroccan Bath popularly known as Hammam Maghrabi is an age-old traditional cleansing ritual practiced by the Moroccans, which is popular across the Middle East. This ritual is done to clean and soften the skin. It also helps to relax the body, improve blood circulation and release stress. What’s even better is that you can indulge in this treatment right here in Doha. We visit Heavenly Spa located at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa to experience the 60-minute Hammam Ritual introducing one of the new products from the AMRA collection: Caviar Hydrating. AMRA has captured the hydrating, nourishing and restoring properties of Caviar in this collection. The cosmetic properties of Caviar have been known for thousands of years, research studies revealed that Caviar promotes skin rejuvenation and hydration due to the chemical composition of Caviar cells. The cells are very similar to that of young epidermal cells, with large proportions of essential fatty acids, amino acids, mineral salts, vitamin B, zinc and iron. We are first guided into the Moroccan bathroom facilities at Heavenly Spa, our therapist started the Hammam ritual with an invigorating massage using AMRAN Caviar soap, an extremely soft soap in semi- solid gel form. The soap has a woody amber fragrance with distinct top notes of lemon and mint. The Caviar Hydrating collection contains essential oils of Orange, Lemon, Mandarin, Lavender, Spearmint, Peppermint, Patchouli, Cypress, Juniper, Schinus Molle and Cardamom. We are then allowed to lie down in the Hamman bathroom for 10 minutes allowing the steam to open up all our pores. This is the pinnacle moment when the soap starts to work, and cleans and softens the your skin. The caviar soap penetrates the skin, making it soft and ready to exfoliate. After a thorough rinse with warm water, we are ready for an exfoliation scrub that is done using hand-made exfoliating gloves also known as loofah to scrub off any dead skin and dirt. Soon after, Caviar body masque is applied, the masque is rich sea mineral salts, calcium, phosphorus and vitamins which help to restore the natural skin balance, It has beautifying, healing and pacifying effects. The body masque is left on the skin for approximately 10 minutes, allowing the body’s impurities to rise to the surface. Our therapist also applies a special hair Caviar mask. The room is once again filled with hot steam and the masque is rinsed off with warm water after 10 minutes. The Moroccan Hammam ritual leaves us feeling completely refreshed and squeaky-clean. ✤

Tell us three quick facts about your hospitality journey... - The first time I applied to a hotel, I actually wanted to be a chef. It was the HR who thought I’d thrive in marketing. They were right. - I decided to be a hotelier at around the age of 11 or 12, when my late father took us to a Sunday brunch back then at the newly-opened Ciragan Palace Kempinski. I was simply stunned by attention to detail and service. - While growing in my career, I always tried to take on responsibilities above my pay cheque. It just made things faster to take the steps up.
Share with us your future goals at the Four Seasons Hotel Doha for 2018... This property is a well-polished jewel. We will simply continue to win the hearts and minds of our partners by being there for them every step of the way.
