"Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving." Albert Eistein “
It’s that time of year again, when we look back at what has been and forward to what’s to come. Maybe it’s age, but it seems amazing to me that 2024 passed by so quickly and we are already welcoming 2025.
As always, with the dawning of a new year, our thoughts turn to the things we would like to change, whether that be getting healthier – who doesn’t wish for that? – losing weight – also very common – or a vow to take up a new hobby or become more financially organised. Our main feature this month looks at the wellness trends to follow for 2025 and our second story is all about helping you achieve and maintain those resolutions, so, whatever your plans are for the New Year, we’ve got you covered. For the Dining section, I was lucky enough to visit Novikov and Mr. Tailor Steakhouse – I left a happy girl, I can tell you – and my colleague sampled the delights of South America at IKA.
Another colleague headed to the Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail for a fabulous staycation of which, I have to confess, I am just a little jealous.
And, in keeping with our lead features, our Travel pages this month present a whole range of wellness options, the perfect bolster for those New Year’s resolutions. Elsewhere you’ll find loads of info about events happening around the city as well as our usual roundups of news from the worlds of tech, motoring and more to lead you into 2025.
Whatever your plans for the coming year, as Albert Einstein said, keep moving.

Get ready to groove to the chart-topping, multi-award-winning US R&B pioneers who brought us the likes of End of the Road and I’ll Make Love To You.
The soulful superstars, known for emotional ballads and a cappella harmonies are coming to the capital for one night only on January 23 to perform at Doha Golf Club for what promises to be an evening of great music and a certain nostalgia.
Celebrating 40 years together this year, the group was formed in 1985 and consists of baritone Nathan Morris alongside tenors Wanyá Morris (no relation) and Shawn Stockman. In their 1990s’ heyday, they performed as a quartet with bass singer, Michael McCary, who left the group in 2003 due to health issues.
Hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the members were all students at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, initially being managed and produced by another high profile boy bander, Michael Bivins of New Edition.
The band’s early commercial success saw singles Motownphilly and It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday peaking within Billboard Hot 100’s top five. But it was 1992’s soulful End of the Road that put them on the path to international stardom after it topped the charts for a record-breaking 13 weeks.
They went on to break this record twice with 1994’s I’ll Make Love To You, which held the number one spot for 14 weeks,
and One Sweet Day, with Mariah Carey, which stayed at the top of the charts for 16 weeks in 1995.
Over the years, the group went on to win four Grammies, seven American Music Awards as well as numerous other accolades and they just kept on creating slick harmonies, never splitting or launching solo careers, as so many of their compatriots did.
They’ve released 14 studio albums, most recently 2017’s Under The Streetlight. In the US alone, Boyz II Men have sold 25 million albums and that’s without those recordbreaking singles! They’ve also made numerous film and TV appearances, so it’s no surprise that the ‘boys’ from Philly are recognised as some of the most influential performers of their era and generation.
And it’s far from the end of the road as the talented songsters are currently undertaking a 29-date tour across the US and Canada as well as the Middle East where tickets are expected to be in high demand, though details had not been released as we went to press. ✤

Explore eight decades of Pakistan through its art and architecture.
Time travel to Pakistan, tracing the evolution of its art and architecture from the 1940s to the present, through the exhibition Manzar at the Art Mill Museum in the National Museum of Qatar.
A carefully curated collection of around 200 drawings, installations, miniatures, paintings, photographs, sculptures, tapestries and videos showcases contemporary life in versatile ways. Following differing narratives, perspectives and histories, this exhibition emphasises the engagement and role of artists and architects in the transference of knowledge and stress on ecological concerns.
Spanning eight decades, the showcase examines how architects and artists have produced distinct personal and political languages, in conjunction with regional styles, international art and world histories. The display reflects the deep-rooted soul of a land that is ancient historically but young as a country.
Besides the artworks on display, you can also watch performances and listen to talks by experts. An acclaimed list of artists and architects have their works displayed, some of the prominent names being Hamra Abbas, Meher Afroz, Habib Fida Ali and Arif Hasan. A fresh take on the influential French artist’s illustrious works that defined the Arabic region.
The exhibition Seeing is Believing: The Art and Influence of Gérôme showcases the art and legacy of French painter and sculptor Jean-Léon Gérôme and his contribution to the Orientalist Art Movement.
Held at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, the exhibition presents around 400 works, drawing mainly from the upcoming Lusail Museum’s exceptional collection of Orientalist art from the 16th to 19th centuries. It also includes rare works from leading global institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Islamic Arts Museum, Malaysia.
Gérôme was distinguished as an outstanding history painter and visual storyteller in his own time. Yet, he was most renowned as a chronicler of the cultures and people of North Africa and the Middle East. He produced some of Orientalism’s most eminent masterpieces during his travels to Egypt and Turkey between 1855 and 1880. His works played a critical role in illustrating the MENA region for Europe and America. This exhibition aims to present fresh and extensive interpretations of the artist, in conjunction with Edward Said’s revolutionary book Orientalism Gérôme’s works are paired with contemporary artworks
and newly commissioned pieces from artists including Babi Badalov and Nadia Kaabi-Linke. This juxtaposition of the classical works with the modern allows visitors to critically analyse the French artist’s work in the modern context, giving rise to diverse perspectives.

Bored of routine fitness? Try these exciting trends that are power-packed and easier to sustain for a whole new way of taking care of yourself this new year.
Wellness has evolved from a need for treatment to the importance of prevention and maintenance. There is a growing consciousness about health, fitness, nutrition, mindfulness, sleep and appearance.
With the dawn of 2025, the health and wellness landscape is undergoing unprecedented changes, to incorporate hyper-
personalisation like never before. Custom-designed treatments and gadgets with cutting-edge technology that present your diagnosis and cure within moments are reshaping the way we understand and practise fitness.
From a chilled dunking experience to getting smart about your gut health and, finally, laying off those intense serums and letting your skin breathe – here are the top trends in wellness to look forward to in 2025.
You may know about the Ice Bucket Challenge that went viral in 2014. As its successor, cold plunges became the next big thing, popularised by athletes like Paula Radcliffe and Michael Phelps. Cold-water immersion has been known for centuries, first practised by ancient Greeks. Hippocrates, in the fourth century BC, documented the benefits of cold therapy for medicinal purposes and pain relief. A derivation of cryotherapy, ice baths are booming now, offered by gyms, spas, professional clinics and even beach clubs.
Not for the faint-hearted, an ice bath involves submerging yourself in a tub of ice or icy water for five to 15 minutes. It is claimed to be beneficial for muscle soreness, reducing inflammation, and aiding exercise recovery. However, ice baths should be taken under expert supervision and guidance as they present a risk of hypothermia and shock.
Once the go-to of endurance athletes, ice baths have trickled down to neighbourhood fitness centres. From pop-up barrels that enable you to plunge yourself in an upright position and inflatable tubs when you want portability for a dip with a view, to premium smart tubs that control temperature at the touch of a button and activate audio and breathwork guides – there’s a wide range to choose from.
Where to find ice baths in Qatar: Spa and Wellness Centre at Four Seasons Hotel Doha, Awaken Doha, Raise Fitness & Wellness, Wyndham Hotel West Bay Doha, Recovery Lab Qatar.
Picture lifting a heavy Amazon delivery without pulling a back
muscle, heaving your luggage to place it in the overhead compartment on a plane without straining your wrist and pivoting without twisting your ankle. Sounds ideal, like it should be? Make it so.
Despite the regimented gym sessions in our sedentary lives, workouts may not be as effective as we’d like them to be. So, if you’re bored of Pilates and tired of forcing HIIT on yourself, there’s good news for you. The fitness trend for 2025 is more practical, customisable and, most importantly, sustainable.
Make your fitness routine more natural by adopting Functional Fitness – a workout format that incorporates movements that facilitate you to function at your optimal best daily. “Anyone can benefit from functional fitness as it focuses on everyday moves. For example, squatting, reaching, pulling, pushing, bending, lunging, etc,” says Sheila Eason, Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach, in Qatar. “In my opinion, as you get older practising these exercises gets more important and crucial!”
Designed to make the human body behave as it should, functional fitness involves a holistic set of exercises that ensures all your muscle groups and joints are engaged daily to free you from pain, soreness and incorrect movement. It helps improve your balance, stability and flexibility and reduces the risk of injury. It also boosts your overall strength and energy while keeping your weight in check.
Where to find Functional Fitness Training in Qatar: StrongBox Qatar, Evo Active Qatar, Limitless Gym, The Vault Fitness, Move Fitness.
Is your exercise regimen taking a toll on your joints? Switch to low-impact workouts, that are less straining yet yield effective results. “Low impact workout is the best for lowering the risk for injury and decreasing the wear and tear of muscles and joints,” says Aya El Deek, Lagree Fitness Master Trainer, from The Megaformer Studio Qatar.
Activities include walking, cycling, Pilates, swimming and yoga. Bear in mind that low impact does not mean low intensity or easy; these activities will make you huff and puff but without causing aches and pains the next day. They have been known to improve heart and joint health, strengthen bones and lower the risk of diabetes.
Still too easy? Make it more challenging by lengthening the workouts, speeding up the pace and adding resistance. According to Aya: “The Lagree Method (low impact, highintensity workouts done on a Megaformer) is the fastest growing workout trend around the world.”
Where to find Low Impact Workouts in Qatar: The Megaformer Studio Qatar, ASC Sports Center, Fitness First Qatar, Reformer Pilates Qatar, FS8 West Bay.
Weight loss is perhaps the biggest issue most people grapple with in their fitness journeys and there’s no end to trying out various tips and tricks in the hope of achieving it. While fads come and go, it’s the most classic and good old methods that often get overlooked. Like Strength Training. Endless cardio and diets may fall short without assimilating strength training into your fitness plan.
Ganda@Unsplash.com
Strength Training or Resistance Training includes exercises that work out your muscles against an external resistance. These exercises involve equipment like dumbbells, medicine balls, resistance bands and weight machines. You can also practise bodyweight exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, squats and lunges to perform without gear.
These exercises help to reduce body fat, increase lean muscle and burn calories more effectively. “The only thing you need to keep in mind when strength training is proper form and that your workouts are balanced. And a professional trainer can help with that,” advises Sheila.
“Strength training is the best way to stay young and healthy. Do it so you don’t need anyone’s help going up the stairs in your 80s,” recommends Aya. Well, we’re keeping that in mind for sure.
Where to find Strength Training in Qatar: Squad 5 Training, Limitless Gym, Strict Fitness, StrongBox Qatar, VO2 Gym.
The bedrock for the maintenance of the body and mind, gut health is the key to your overall well-being and health. Tooney V John, Clinical Dietitian at Aster DM Healthcare Qatar says: “To promote gut health, it is important to follow a well-balanced diet with proper meal timings and include high-fibre and fermented foods to support a healthy intestinal microbiome.”
Maintaining a healthy gut microbiome is paramount to avoiding issues like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and leaky gut.
Factors that affect the microbiome include a poor diet, high stress, excessive intake of antibiotics and insufficient sleep. “Most healthy adults can safely incorporate foods containing prebiotics and probiotics into their diet. Probiotics are found in yoghurt, kefir and other fermented foods; while prebiotics are found in garlic, onions, bananas and whole grains,” adds Tooney.
Sure, you’ve tried several diets. But have you thought about when to eat instead of what to eat? Intermittent fasting is about giving importance to your eating schedule, which is very specific, such as 16/8. It involves eating during a window of eight hours and then fasting for 16. Other formats include the 5:2 approach, where you eat regularly for five days and then limit yourself to 500-600 calories - one meal a day - twice a week. The approach functions on the principle that during fasting, the sugar stored in the body is used up, giving way to the fat-burning process.
“Intermittent fasting is best recommended for generally healthy individuals looking to improve metabolic health. It promotes
digestion and detoxifies the body when done right,” says Nivine Jamal Jalfi, Senior Dietitian at Diet Delights Nutrition Center.
“While adopting intermittent fasting, start gradually, stay hydrated, listen to your body and avoid it if you have certain medical conditions or dietary restrictions. It is not recommended for more than 14 hours for women in their childbearing age because it might cause hormonal imbalances,” she advises.
With the increase in and uncontrolled use of pharmaceutical drugs like antibiotics, antidepressants, painkillers and sedatives, and the side effects that follow, natural care is growing in popularity with alternative therapies like ayurveda, yoga, meditation and massages. And while you may make time to hit the gym religiously, sleep most often tends to be compromised. Sleep therapy assists you in recognising and altering your sleeping habits to ensure better quality and quantity of sleep. From sleep syncing to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), there are several ways to fix your nightly bedtime routine. While deep breathing is not a recent groundbreaking discovery, breathwork is being understood and practised widely now. You don’t need a morning routine or yoga class to practise breathwork. Taking out a few minutes any time of the day, anywhere, goes a long way in preserving your mental peace. Breathwork can be done in many ways – from deep abdominal breathing, and alternate nostril breathing, to sequence counts like 4-7-8 where you inhale for four counts, hold for seven counts and exhale for eight counts. Slowing down the breath has several benefits including reducing blood pressure, increasing oxygen supply to the organs and improving mood.

In the era of hyper-personalisation, wellness tech is poised to become a game-changer in 2025. AI-driven apps and wearable devices like Fitbod and Oura Ring provide real-time insights and adapt to your daily energy and nutrition levels. They can create advanced and intelligent training schedules and diagnose impending medical conditions by monitoring various metrics. Adding meal-planning apps, like Paprika, Eat This Much and PlateJoy, and calorie-counters, like MyFitnessPal, LifeSum and Nutritionix Track, into your armoury can help fortify your defence against weight gain and help maintain a customised diet to suit your body’s needs. Shelling out some bucks on kitchen gadgets like a smart refrigerator that alerts you to depleting reserves or expiring foods can shield you against last-minute frittering on junk foods and take-aways. With the focus on mental wellness like never before, apps and programmes like Calm, Mindshift CBT and Headspace could be your handy go-to to stay calm and focused to beat the daily grind. One area that is seeing a rising boom is Sleep Technology. If you’re plagued by the lack of quality sleep, investing in a Smart Mattress or Smart Bed may be the solution to all your problems. The hi-tech mattresses or beds use sensors and smart technology to collect and examine data about your sleep patterns. They offer adjustable settings for firmness, support, inclination and temperature to ensure you sleep faster and more restfully. The best part? They offer customisation on both sides of the bed, so no more quarrelling with your partner.

And if you’re the one who needs a monotonous hum to lull you to sleep, get yourself a white noise machine like LectroFan, Yogasleep or Homedics so you can blank out that restless mind or block out noises for undistracted slumber.
Want to take your wellness up even further? Imagine altering your genetic makeup to lead a stress and disease-free life. Sounds utopic? Say hello to ‘biohacking’. A form of preventative healthcare, biohacking employs AI diagnostics to stay healthy and sustain it long-term by making accumulative changes to your body, diet and lifestyle. It also helps to anticipate risk disposition to genetic diseases and prescribes deterrent measures for the same.
Busy lifestyles need smart solutions and the advancement in beauty treatments has helped women and men all over the world to enhance their skin and hair.
Hi-tech treatments and beauty gadgets
Microcurrent facial toning sculpts the face and reduces wrinkles. Facial hair removal procedures like dermaplaning are painless and convenient. Popularised by celebs, intravenous therapy containing antioxidants like vitamin C and glutathione has made a mark in providing instant results in skin brightening and increasing collagen formation.
LED masks are a staple at skin clinics now for their ability to increase collagen production, toning and reduction of acne. Those resistant to physical scrubs, brushes and chemical peels can rely on ultrasonic scrubbers for gentle exfoliation. Smart mirrors like Himirror track the formation of wrinkles and moles on your face and monitor the effectiveness of products.
AI Diagnostics
With AI pervading all domains, beauty and skincare couldn’t be left behind. AI skin analysis helps detect skin issues and provides recommendations on the most suitable treatment and products within seconds. AR virtual make-up try-ons have been a boon for remote shopping, where you can identify the most apt shades and experiment with colours.
Edible Skincare
Since external care is never enough, now you can also eat your way to flawless skin. Superfood supplements and collagen powders are becoming a favoured ammunition for beauty peeps. But as always, be sure to take a doctor’s advice before popping any pills. Meanwhile, Golden Milk and morning ginger shots are safe bets.
Skincare has undergone a renaissance with active ingredients pervading every skincare product. But at the end of 2024, our complexions have become saturated with these super ingredients so much that a break is in demand in the form of skin cycling.
Using multiple active ingredients simultaneously risks overburdening and damaging the skin instead of gaining the desired results. Skin cycling helps to give a muchneeded breather, by following a four-night singleingredient routine. Beginning with exfoliation on the first night, using retinol on the second, and intense hydrants on the third and fourth, the emphasis is on minimalism. This basic routine helps skin repair its barrier and restore itself from the effects of strong actives.
Nothing beats a good ol’ massage that aids the lymphatic system’s natural detoxification process. It helps in eliminating excess fluid build-up from the lymph nodes, decreasing puffiness, boosting circulation and promoting a clearer complexion. Lymphatic massage should be done by trained professionals like physiotherapists and massage therapists. Thereafter, you can learn to do simple massages yourself at home. Lymphatic massage is performed on the armpits, neck and the groin area.
With these exciting innovations to look forward to and technology helping us incorporate and implement them in easier ways, taking care of our health shouldn’t feel like a chore. From organic exercises and eating mindfully to smarter skincare, here’s to making health and wellness a lifestyle choice this new year.
As the calendar flips to 2025, we all feel the pull of a fresh start. A sense of renewal sweeps over us and people all around the world embrace the tradition of making New Year’s resolutions. While the promise of new beginnings is exciting, keeping them is often easier said than done. Let’s delve into the history and psychology behind New Year’s resolutions, explore why they often fail and uncover creative strategies, tips and tricks to make them stick!
The tradition of New Year’s resolutions isn’t new – it dates back over 4,000 years to ancient Babylonia, where promises were made to the Gods in exchange for a prosperous year. The Romans also adopted similar practices, offering sacrifices in January to Janus, the two-faced God of beginnings and transitions. In modern times, although the focus has shifted from pleasing deities to self-improvement, the essence remains the same – a fresh start.
Psychologists have shown that focussing on goals is linked to higher motivation and self-confidence, in turn leading to selfbetterment. Even if you don’t fully succeed, just the process of setting goals can improve focus and direction. Essentially, resolutions are a way of saying: “I believe in a better version of myself” – a powerful motivator in itself.
It’s no secret that every New Year millions make resolutions, and, by February, most have fallen by the wayside. How often do people pledge to go to the gym every day, only to quit by the third week? That’s because unrealistic expectations and life’s unpredictability often derail even the best intentions.
Studies suggest that around 40% of adults make New Year’s resolutions, yet only 9% to 12% stick to them by year’s end. Why the striking gap? Here are some common reasons we fail to stay the course:
● Vague Goals: Resolutions like ‘be healthy’ or ‘save more money’ are too broad and make it difficult to measure progress.
● Over-ambition: Many resolutions fail because they are just too unrealistic. For example, committing to working out daily after months of being a couch potato will lead to overwhelm and burnout.
● Lack of Planning: Without a proper roadmap, resolutions can lose their momentum and get forgotten.
Ditch the clichéd resolutions and try something new this year. If it’s fun and excites you, you’ll be more likely to stick to it. Check out this list for inspiration:
● Volunteer for a cause that resonates with you, be it working at an animal shelter or helping the elderly.
● Learn a new language or skill, like photography or painting.
● Perform random acts of kindness and brighten someone’s day each week with a small, thoughtful gesture or compliment.
● Try a digital detox and disconnect from screens at least one day a week.
● Travel to a destination you’ve never been to before.
● Practice gratitude by journalling three things you’re thankful for each day.
● Get creative with your hands – whether its pottery, knitting or DIY projects.
● Commit to cooking one new recipe every week.
Sticking to resolutions doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Try these practical tips and tricks to stay committed.
● Set SMART Goals: Make them ‘Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound’. For example, instead of ‘read more books’, aim for ‘read one book every month’.
● Break Goals Into Steps: Divide larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks.
● Track Your Progress: Use journals, apps or even just a simple checklist to keep tabs on achievements. Studies have shown writing down resolutions led to increased success rates.
● Accountability Partners: Share your goals publicly with friends, family or online communities to stay focussed and accountable.
● Reward Yourself: Don’t forget to celebrate small wins to stay motivated.
If big resolutions feel overwhelming, start small and build up.
● Yearly Themes: Instead of rigid goals, adopt a broader theme like ‘2025: The Year of Connection’ or ‘The Year of Exploration’. This will allow flexibility and creativity.
● Monthly Focus Areas: Divide the year into themes, such as January: Wellness, February: Relationship Goals, March: Budgeting and so on.
● Bucket Lists: Replace measurable goals with a list of experiences to try – it could be anything from skydiving to learning to bake to roller skating.
Let technology lend a hand – apps are a great way to keep you motivated and track your progress.
● Habitica: Turns your goals into fun challenges by gamifying your resolutions.
● Todoist: Breaks down your goals into manageable tasks with progress tracking.
● GoalsWon: Experienced human accountability coaches help keep you and your life goals on track.
● Centr: Personalised workout, nutrition and mindfulness plans inspired by Chris Hemsworth.
● Calm or Headspace: Start or enhance a mindfulness journey with guided meditations.
● YNAB (You Need A Budget): Helps you take control of your finances by assigning jobs to every dollar and tracking your spending.
● Duolingo: Learn a language in fun, bite-sized lessons.
So, you see – resolutions don’t have to be daunting. Simply start small, stay flexible and focus on what truly matters to you. Whatever your goals, remember – progress, not perfection, is the key to success. Let’s make 2025 your best year yet!
FACT got its hands on the 2025 Hyundai Tucson, a premium small crossover SUV with an impressive array of high-end features.
Thanks to the team at Hyundai Skyline Automotive Qatar, FACT was invited to inspect and test drive the Premium model of the new Tucson. The fourth generation of Hyundai’s iconic SUV is now sporting a fresh facelift and many new and enhanced comfort, convenience and safety features.
As the familiar shape of the Tucson came into view, we spotted subtle upgrades to the exterior design.
The shape of the 2025 model’s body exudes a bold and modern character with angled surfaces and an unapologetically unique style that sets it apart from other vehicles in the market segment.
A new, yet recognisable, black-coated radiator grille is complemented by a redesigned front bumper fascia along with a remodelled LED lighting display. We appreciated how the daytime running light signature has been streamlined from 10 units to eight larger ones, combining effortlessly with the grille. This design feature ties the aggressive front end into a neat and stylish arrangement. Making our way to the sides of the SUV, we noted the crisp lines and angled surfaces connecting the front to the rear. Eighteeninch alloy wheels (with contrasting finishes), black mud guards and bridge-type, raised side roof rails enhance the rugged nature of the vehicle, while body-coloured door handles add to the premium feel.
At the back end, the redesigned rear fascia along with the lighting strip run the full width of the vehicle. Now familiar fang-shaped LED taillights amplify the car’s aggressive demeanour.
Once inside, we were pleasantly surprised by the spacious and comfortable cockpit and the sophisticated layout of the general cabin area.
Hyundai has put a lot of time and effort into improving the latest Tucson’s interior. Thanks to the panoramic power sunroof, there was plenty of natural light for us to take in the impressive space. We were fortunate enough to experience the Premium level trim that comes with comfy leather seats which are multi-adjustable with lumbar support.
The redesigned centre stack now includes frequently used driver controls such as select HVAC controls that ensure optimum ergonomics. Easy access to volume control has also been provided.
Another notable feature is the wireless charging pad in the centre console, making it a breeze to recharge devices on the move.
The refreshed leather steering wheel and centre console enhanced usability and the overall stylish character of the vehicle. We loved how the door panels and dashboard formed together seamlessly with high-end materials and finishes present throughout the interior.
Once in the back row, we remarked on the abundance of head and knee room on offer. With spilt folding-type rear seats and plenty of space for a family of five, this car is a great option for longer journeys. The luggage compartment also provides loads of cargo room, especially with the rear seating folded flat. It would be amiss of us not to mention the dual-zone climate control that can keep the entire car cool even on the hottest of days.
The tech in the new Tucson has definitely levelled up, and we enjoyed taking in all the 2025 model has to offer.
The Premium trim level meant our Tucson housed an eight-inch audio screen and a 10.25-inch visual cluster, along with loads of analogue gauges. The improved infotainment system was far easier to use, with near effortless access to desired information and system functions.
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are equipped as standard, as is wireless connectivity. The optional Bose stereo system proved exceptional, helping us to provide a great soundtrack to our day. We were told by the team that a new 12-inch colour Head-Up Display (HUD) with premium graphics is available upon request.
Further must-mention features include the digital key smartphone app that allows the owner to remotely start the engine, as well as to unlock the vehicle.
As always, we were happiest when setting off along the tarmac. As we made our way around the city, we had to remark on how smoothly the new Tucson performed, cruising along quietly, handling corners like a dream.
Our model housed a 2.5L GDi Petrol engine that purred quietly all day. Coupled with an eight-speed transmission, we were satisfied with the car’s response when its power was called upon, along with the effective braking system.
Once at our test location, we managed a 0-100km/h time of around nine seconds, not too shabby for a family SUV. After hours of travelling, we felt as comfortable as we did when we first entered the vehicle, once again confirming the SUV’s perfect makeup for long road trips or for constant dayto-day use.
To us, one of the best features of the 2025 Tucson is its wide range of driver assistance and safety features.
Included in this list are an anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), hill-start control (HAC), an electronic parking brake (EPB), a forward collision avoidance system, lane keeping assist, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), front and rear parking distance warning, a rear-view monitor and many others.
We honestly feel that owners of this SUV can leave on any journey with confidence that Hyundai has provided some of the very best protection for all occupants.
The new Hyundai Tucson is a capable, comfortable and classy SUV, offering an abundance of cutting-edge tech and a safe travelling environment for the whole family. ✤
The shape of the 2025 model’s body exudes a bold and modern character with angled surfaces and an unapologetically unique style that sets it apart from other vehicles in the market segment.”

The new Mate X6 from HUAWEI is ‘built like a tank’ pushing foldable durability to greater heights.
From their early days, foldable mobile phones have excited debate over whether they’re actually strong enough for everyday use. Now with the release of the Mate X6, Huawei has come up with a design that’s strong at the same time as retaining a sleek and stylish design ethos.
The Mate X6 is protected by the 2nd Gen Kunlun Glass, which is now 25 times more drop resistant. And the interior display is reinforced with a carbon fibre plate that makes it 65% stiffer. With an aviation-grade aluminium frame, that’s 37% stronger than previous versions, and the new advanced hinge mechanism crafted from 100% rocket steel, you’ve got a phone that can take a beating while still looking sleek.
Cameras on foldables have often been a bit of a letdown, juggling quality and the constraints of a folding mechanism. But Huawei’s Mate X6 is flipping the script. The Ultra Chroma camera system delivers stunning colour accuracy and clarity, thanks to 1.50 million spectral channels promising photos with true-to-life skin tones and vibrant colours, no matter the lighting. It’s the first foldable phone to support a 5cm telephoto macro lens, perfect for detailed close-ups or impressive telephoto shots. Plus, the 50MP main camera with a 10-size adjustable aperture gives you creative control over depth of field and light intake.
The expansive folding screen is built for productivity. Live
multitasking lets you run up to three apps at once in the expanded view, for example taking a video call while editing a document and browsing the web.
The EMUI 15 takes things up a notch in the fun stakes with playful features like the Emoji Crush theme. Your emojis react to your actions – shake your phone and they might change expressions or roll around the screen.
The Mate X6 features a 6.45-inch OLED external screen with a 2440×1080 resolution, perfect for quick glances and everyday use. Flip it open, and you get a massive 7.93-inch OLED internal display at 2440×2240 resolution. Both screens are bright and vibrant. Whether you’re under the bright sun or in a dimly lit room, the visuals stay crisp and clear. Depending on what you’re doing, the display refresh rate can adjust from 1Hz and 120Hz, ensuring smooth scrolling and gaming without draining the battery.
Design-wise, the Mate X6 draws inspiration from celestial orbits and is impressively slim – only 9.85mm thick when folded and 4.6mm unfolded. The Nebula Gray edition, with its Micro-Nano 3D Topography finish, feels both premium and resilient. Crafted from Vagen Fiber, a blend of aerospace-grade glass fibre and bulletproof vest materials, this phone is as tough as it is beautiful. The Mate X6 also comes in Nebula Red and Black with ultra-thin plain leather options. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.HUAWEI.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

The President of high-end accessories house S. T. Dupont, on a visit to the company’s Qatar operation, gave us an insight into French luxury and how it forms the hallmark of the brand.
In the nearly two decades of your stint at S. T. Dupont, what have been the challenges of spearheading such a historic brand and how do you make it relevant to the new generations?
Navigating S.T. Dupont through nearly two decades has required a careful balance between tradition and innovation to resonate with new generations. Our core strengths –craftsmanship, quality and timeless design – remain at the heart of what we do. Yet, we have also embraced digital and social strategies to connect with a younger audience. We’ve diversified our product lines, introducing contemporary items like backpacks, sling bags and trendy pieces such as the lighter necklace and soon-to-come pen necklace to appeal to urban lifestyles. Our rebranding last year was also significant in modernising the brand image while staying true to our heritage.
In your extensive experience working in diverse markets worldwide, what is that one aspect consumers seek from a luxury offering?
Consumers today seek authenticity in luxury – genuine, wellcrafted items that reflect heritage and quality. At S.T. Dupont, we pride ourselves on preserving traditional craftsmanship, which is increasingly valued by discerning international customers. In some markets, especially in emerging regions, the demand for high-quality, ‘Made in France’ products continues to grow, highlighting the importance of authentic luxury.
You are an active member of prestigious associations such as Comité Colbert (an association that promotes the concept of luxury). What three things do you consider to be the paragon of French luxury and heritage?
I believe the true essence of French luxury and heritage lies in craftsmanship, cultural heritage and timeless elegance. These are the cornerstones of what makes French luxury unique and deeply admired around the world. At S.T. Dupont, we stay true to our core business – malletier/leather goods manufacturer since 1872 – while infusing modern touches into our products. This blend of tradition and innovation sets S.T. Dupont apart as a symbol of French luxury.
How do you define your leadership style and what do you do to bring out the best in your team?
My leadership style is collaborative and results-oriented. I foster a supportive and inclusive environment that empowers my team. This means encouraging open communication, creativity and a sense of ownership among team members. When recruiting, I seek individuals passionate about craftsmanship who can adapt to a dynamic global market. At S.T. Dupont, integrity is non-negotiable; we uphold our brand’s heritage through transparency and respect for our legacy. These qualities ensure that every team member contributes meaningfully to our success.
How do you see the luxury market in Qatar aligning with S. T. Dupont’s goals and what has been your most enjoyable
experience during your visit?
It is a dynamic and growing market with a strong appreciation for high-quality products and craftsmanship. Qatar’s cultural alignment with European luxury traditions makes it an ideal market for us, where we can showcase our heritage while catering to affluent, discerning consumers.
My most enjoyable experience here has been interacting with the vibrant and diverse local culture. The warmth and hospitality of the Qatari people, coupled with their deep appreciation for art and luxury, have made my time here truly memorable. I would describe Qatar as a place where tradition meets modernity, creating a dynamic and exciting environment that blends heritage with contemporary luxury. ✤

Mohammad Hamad, Head Chef, DoubleTree by Hilton Doha – Al Sadd, shares insights into his use of spices and the importance of mentorship.
When did you first realise you wanted to be a chef, and what is your first kitchen memory?
I first realised I wanted to be a chef during my teenage years. I loved spending time in the kitchen with my family, especially during festive occasions, where the joy and connection food brought to everyone deeply inspired me. That’s when I began to see cooking as more than just a hobby – it became a passion and a calling. One of my earliest kitchen memories is helping my mother prepare traditional Arabic dishes. I vividly recall the intoxicating aroma of spices filling the house and the thrill of learning how to combine flavours and techniques. That moment sparked my fascination with creating meals that bring people together and has guided me ever since.
Throughout your career, you have been in the public eye through numerous television appearances. How did this side of your culinary journey come about and what do you enjoy about it?
My journey into television started in 2014 when I had the chance to host a live cooking show on Jordan TV. It was an exciting challenge to showcase my skills and share my love for cooking with a wider audience. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of appearing on shows like Qatar TV in 2019 and participating in major culinary events, including Hospitality Qatar and the Doha Food Festival. What I enjoy most about this aspect of my career is the opportunity to connect with people. Whether I’m demonstrating recipes, sharing culinary techniques or discussing food traditions, I find it incredibly fulfilling to inspire others and share the magic of cooking. It’s heart-warming to witness the joy food can bring, whether through a screen or live in front of an audience.
Earlier this year, you and your team received several accolades, including multiple awards at the Qatar Chefs Challenge 2024.
What does this mean to you?
Winning multiple awards at the Qatar Chefs Challenge 2024
was an incredible honour for me and my team. These accolades represent our collective hard work, creativity and dedication to culinary excellence.
Of all the awards, one moment that stands out is seeing Chef Shisir, a Demi Chef de Partie at DoubleTree Al Sadd, win the Best Arabic Chef title. Shisir has been under my mentorship for three years, starting at my previous workplace. Despite being from Nepal, he embraced the challenge of mastering Arabic cuisine with passion and determination. Watching him excel in this category and gain such prestigious recognition was deeply rewarding.
This achievement highlights the value of mentorship and the transformative power of knowledge-sharing. It brings me immense joy to see someone I’ve guided reach such an incredible milestone – it’s a reminder of why I love being both a chef and a leader.
What is your signature dish, how was it developed, and what makes it popular?
My signature dish is Stuffed Lamb with Machboos Rice, a creation that captures the essence of Arabic cuisine. It has been refined over the years by mastering traditional recipes and adding my modern touches to elevate its flavour and presentation.
What makes this dish so popular is the perfect harmony between the tender, flavourful lamb and the fragrant Machboos rice. The rice is infused with a distinctive blend of spices, dried limes and aromatic ingredients, creating a rich and memorable taste experience.
This dish has earned its place as a standout item on the Silk Road menu, where it’s become a favourite among our guests. For me, it’s more than just a signature dish – it’s a celebration of tradition and hospitality. Seeing the joy it brings to diners is the ultimate reward and a testament to the enduring appeal of our culinary heritage. ✤
Liz O’Reilly encountered a fusion of exceptional flavours on a recent trip to Novikov.
Walking into Novikov Restaurant and Beach Club, at The St. Regis Doha, I was immediately struck by the abundance of greenery, giving the place an outside-in feel, with plants arranged around the walls and cascading from the ceiling. The lighting is also a distinct feature with cocoon-like, mesh lanterns casting a subdued but welcoming glow as they hang from an interesting wagon wheellike structure above.
With the return of balmy desert evenings, we chose, like many others, to enjoy the buzzing al fresco dining area where laughter drifted from neighbouring tables and contemporary music added to the atmosphere.
On the outside terrace, a bamboo-panelled, pagoda-style roof, decked with round wicker lights, spoke of Novikov’s origins and General Manager Alessandro Zavarise explained how the concept was born in London’s Mayfair, in 2011. The brainchild of Russian hospitality veteran Arkady Novikov, whose vision was to have two restaurants in a single venue – one serving Mediterranean cuisine, the other focussing on a pan-Asian menu. Over time, guests in one would request items from the other and Novikov’s international outlets now offer the best of both worlds – which we discovered in Qatar with a menu boasting the likes of beef carpaccio with rocket and truffle alongside yellowtail coriander, from the Raw Bar, or classic Caesar Salad alongside a selection of dim sum and more.
We began our feast with Wagyu tacos served with guacamole and chipotle. The shells of the crispy, mini tacos perfectly complemented the melting beef within, the creaminess of the avocado and the smoky heat of the chipotle drawing out the excellent succulence and flavour of the meat.
Next to the table was burrata with ripe pomodoro, the quintessential Italian flavour of oregano and baby basil leaves all coated in super-high-quality extra virgin olive oil with a sprinkling of Maldon salt. Breaking through the solid outer casing of the cheese, I watched in delight as the creamy inner ran onto the plate before plunging my fork into one of the sweet, pepperflecked tomatoes and scooping up the velvety goodness. Superb. As we waited for our next delicious morsel, Alessandro served us one of Novikov’s signature mocktails containing passionfruit, dragon fruit, coconut water and alcohol-free gin. Pretty, pink and decidedly moreish, it was a very welcome taste break between courses. Arancini are a popular Italian street food and a great favourite of mine, so I was delighted to see these bite-sized breaded risotto spheres heading towards us. But, like with so much else on the menu, these are not just any arancini, they’re Novikov arancini, which means they come with truffle and wasabi mayonnaise to draw out the crunchiness of the outer coating and the creamy, oozing centre. The truffle lent a sweet smokiness to the cheese adding that certain something to an already fabulous dish. The rare fungi made another appearance in the Hamachi Yuzu Truffle Roll, a sushi roll with soya mayo, avocado, spring onions and truffle dressing. I’d requested minimal rice, the better to fully appreciate the superbly tasty filling combination which, with the
tiniest dab of wasabi to accompany the rich, slightly sour fish, made for the perfect mix.
The Seared Salmon Avocado Roll that arrived alongside was equally impressive, though we decided to take the fish raw rather than cooked to make the most of the creaminess that comes from its high fat content. Served with soya, mirin, avocado and sesame seeds, the sweetness of the mirin played on the nuttiness of the seeds to truly bring out the best in this luxurious, slightly citrusy fish.
Having seen the dessert menu, we decided to forego a proper main course so we could do full justice to the sweet offerings. And what a good decision this turned out to be. Swathed in a cloud of seriously Instagrammable dry ice, a tray of goodies arrived at the table and we couldn’t wait to dive in.
The chocolate fondant cake, oozing and indulgent, and the sticky toffee pudding, with lush, sweet dates giving a nod to regional mores, were immediate hits at our table. I was also intrigued by the Matcha Brûlée, which is something I’ve not tried before. The addition of green tea gives a pleasant, earthy bite to cut through the rich smoothness of the brûlée. Served
alongside a generous helping of fresh fruit and indulgent, creamy dollops of vanilla and homemade Nutella ice cream, each sweet offering was a triumph.
I have to say though, for me, the Mango Tiramisu was the star of the show. Since I don’t like coffee, I often feel slightly deprived when my friends are gleefully tucking into the traditional version. So, I took full advantage of the coffee-free option with its light but creamy mix of ladyfingers, mascarpone and deeply satisfying mango purée. A total triumph that I’d be happy to repeat. Not surprisingly, we lingered over dessert with our teas and coffees as the terrace slowly emptied around us. Then, as we were ready to leave, Alessandro was back offering to show us the newly opened beach part of the beach club, which looks stunning – sun loungers, blue waters and amazing food, what more could you want.
It was the icing on the cake of our visit to an extraordinary venue where east meets west and offers the best of both worlds. ✤
AMS savoured the vibrant soul of South America on a visit to IKA.
From the moment we stepped into IKA, at Aleph Doha Residences, Curio Collection by Hilton, we were struck by its vibrant and contemporary interior. The restaurant’s design is a blend of modern geometry and South American warmth, with intricate lattice woodwork dividing the space into intimate sections. Splashes of colour from jewel-toned cushions and a striking patchwork wall mural set the scene for a lively yet elegant dining experience. The polished marble floors reflect the soft glow of orb-shaped pendant lights, adding a luxurious sheen to the space. Lush greenery in tall vases brought a natural freshness, softening the modern lines and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
As we approached our table, we were greeted with warm smiles and genuine enthusiasm. From the moment we sat down, the staff struck a perfect balance between attentiveness and familiarity, sharing recommendations and asking thoughtful questions about our preferences. Latin music played softly in the background, infusing the space with a lively rhythm that hinted at the energy behind the carefully curated dishes. It felt as though everyone was determined to make our evening special, and we instantly felt at ease.
Our meal began with the Ceviche, a dish that brought together the bracing freshness of white fish, tangy tiger’s milk and delicate sweet potato. Each bite delivered a perfect balance of brightness
and richness, while the chulpi corn added an irresistible crunch, grounding the dish in earthy textures.
The Hotate Truffle Nigiri followed, a decadent twist on Japanese simplicity. The scallops were buttery and silky, their sweetness heightened by the subtle depth of truffle butter and the citrusy lift of lime. Chives provided a welcome herbaceous note, completing this jewel of a dish.
The hot starters offered an equally thrilling journey. The Cachapas, a traditional corn pancake, were both comforting and indulgent. The sweet, golden pancake melted into the savoury creaminess of Manchego and mozzarella, creating a luxurious mouthful of South American soul food.
Next came the Conchas A La Parmesana, where plump scallops were enveloped in a velvety Grana Padano foam. Tobiko pearls atop the scallops provided a playful pop of texture and a subtle salinity that danced across our palates. This dish was both an ode to the ocean and a triumph of creativity.
As the starters concluded, we had the pleasure of meeting Chef Antonio, a celebrated Spanish talent with over a decade of experience in Doha. He greeted us warmly, sharing his passion for South American cuisine and the inspiration behind the dishes we were enjoying. His enthusiasm was infectious as he spoke about his culinary philosophy and hinted at the exciting new menu he would soon unveil. It was clear that we were in the hands of a true craftsman.
For the main course, we chose the Arroz Con Pato, a dish designed for two but with flavours expansive enough to fill a table. The coriander rice, simmered with a blend of earthy spices, garlic and fresh herbs, was fragrant and vibrant, perfectly complementing the tender, slow-cooked duck leg. A fried egg perched on top added a luscious richness, while the huancaína sauce, with its blend of peppers and cheese, provided a creamy, tangy kick. Each forkful offered a harmonious symphony of bold flavours and textures, with baby vegetables providing a fresh, crisp counterpoint.
After finishing our main course, we took a moment to relax and soak in the lively atmosphere of IKA. Families began to arrive, filling the space with a warm, convivial energy as they greeted each other and settled in for their meals. Our eyes wandered to the private dining booths tucked discreetly along one side of the restaurant, offering an intimate space for special gatherings. Nearby, a vibrant display caught our attention, highlighting IKA’s rotating special menus throughout the week and the muchtalked-about Friday Brunch.
To close, we indulged in the Saffron Tres Leches. The saffroninfused milk cake was impossibly moist, with warm, floral notes that paired beautifully with the nutty crunch of the topping. Mango ice cream added a tropical freshness, leaving a cooling sweetness on our tongues. The final treat was a delicate sorbet flavoured with pisco sour, a refreshing palate cleanser that left a citrusy brightness lingering with us.
With Chef Antonio at the helm and a new menu on the horizon, IKA remains a destination for innovative South American cuisine in Doha. Every dish told a story – an exploration of flavours both comforting and exciting, with impeccable execution to match. It was a journey we were eager to take again. ✤
High-quality ingredients, stylish décor and a warm welcome were on the menu when Liz O’Reilly visited Mr. Tailor
Heading to Mr. Tailor Steakhouse through the lobby of the Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha, it was good to see the property so busy and buzzing with the excited chatter of multinational guests, their different languages lending a festive vibe to the impressive space.
Once inside the restaurant, I was immediately impressed with the amount of thought that has gone into providing numerous different seating options, from an opulent mirrored drinks area, where black-and-white illusion flooring gives an Art Deco feel, to semi-private booths, tables and banquettes in a more open area, ensuring every type of gathering is catered for.
The plush green and cream seating is both comfortable and striking and the atmosphere is very much chic and refined with an undercurrent of fun. The music choice – vintage David Bowie on my visit – adds to the sense of slightly off-beat hipness, while shards of light from a glittering chandelier bounced off numerous black-and-white images of Hollywood icons exciting discussion about who’s the absolute coolest – it’s Marlon Brando, in case you were wondering.
We chose to make the most of the gorgeous winter weather and took a seat outside to await the selection of dishes the chef had prepared for us, beginning with an amazing amuse-bouche of octopus brioche – a morsel of tasty, chewy octopus in a crispy and a flaky croissant-like bombe – accompanied by three
different butters, one of which was dotted with flavourful black nori, a fresh combination to which I kept returning.
The Haikado Scallops that followed were almost too pretty to eat. Cooked and presented on the shell, with smoke billowing for the perfect Instagram shot, they sat in a delicious creamy sauce with matsutake mushroom and Ikura caviar. The seafood was tender and sweet, perfectly complemented by the tart saltiness of the caviar. And the quality of this dish gave a great indication of what was to come.
Beef Cecina, aged, cured meat, was served hanging from a cute mini stand accompanied by shaved curls of Swiss cheese. Fabulously rich and lightly salty, a generous dollop of homemade kumquat marmalade really brought out the flavours of both meat and cheese, a genius, palate pleasing stroke.
Beef Tartare plated at the table and served with super thin toasted sourdough topped with a quail’s egg was simply sublime, the perfect combination of seasonings rendering the high-quality raw meat superbly tasty and digestible.
Next up, Wagyu Maki introduced a whole range of elements – a topping of fried asparagus strands added a salty, crunchy touch providing the perfect textural foil to the beef, which was buttery, tender and flavourful. Combined with avocado and cucumber, wrapped in a wafer-thin layer of beef and set atop a nori leaf, this whole experience was a treat for the taste buds that was subtly elevated by a topping of black caviar and an amazing homemade
sauce, the ingredients of which are a closely guarded secret. I honestly could have eaten just these; they were beautifully satisfying and the whole range of flavours incorporated in each roll gave the feeling of having enjoyed a complete meal with each mouthful.
For our final savoury dish, we chose the 8+ Wagyu fillet which was a celebration of the Earth’s bounty. The deep marbling oozing flavourfilled juices, my knife literally slid through the tender, succulent meat bringing an explosion of subtle gaminess. Served alongside it was a rich marrow bone, the umami creaminess perfectly offsetting the intensity of the meat. The accompanying king oyster mushrooms added a sweet, harmonious depth alongside a crunchy vegetable selection and the bright, herbaceous tang of chimichurri, which cut through the richness of the plate. There really should not have been room for dessert but I am a big fan of raspberries and simply could not resist the Belgian Chocolate Raspberry Cake – although, I have to admit, I didn’t try very hard.
A thing of great beauty, the rich mousse and sponge cake was topped with sticky chocolate ganache and fresh berries alongside chocolate crumb and raspberry coulis. I can honestly say, I am smiling just writing about it. If it’s possible to taste dark sweetness, this was it, and the berries and other fruits alongside provided a wonderful contrast. We really could not have asked for a better conclusion to our meal.
From arriving at the chic drinks area with its gold and green high stools, to the warm welcome and personal attention from
the chef to the wonderful quality of absolutely everything we were served, Mr. Tailor was an experience of cosy, sophisticated gastronomy from beginning to end. I cannot recommend it highly enough and can’t wait to return. ✤

I can anticipate that it’s going to be something memorable.
After a quick check-in, I was accompanied to my onebedroom suite on the sixth floor, which was grander than I had expected. A massive living room with a dark wood floor, white and mirrored cupboards and a dining table with sandwiches, chocolates and dates, fresh juices and fruits welcomed me into the space. The area was completed with a white sofa, a big TV, a blue carpet and a marble coffee table with a beautiful flower bouquet – a special gift for me. The automated curtains opened, and a breathtaking view of the hotel pool and beach was revealed in front of my eyes. The balcony was spacious, with lots of comfortable furniture to enjoy the view – I felt like I didn’t need much more for my stay. But I guess I needed a bed. Striped carpet in beige tones took me to the bedroom area, and it didn’t disappoint; I discovered a large king-size bed and separate changing space, followed by a marbled bathroom. Beauty amenities from Byredo and a super fluffy robe were all I needed for a sumptuous night in. However, a girl needs to eat, so I got ready for a meal at Scarpetta. With an Italian-American menu, Scarpetta offers an array of comfort dishes. I went for a creamy polenta with fricassee of truffled mushroom. I grew up eating polenta, so every time I see it on a menu (not always available, even in Italian restaurants), I go for it and it was the best pick! Just like the name suggested, it was incredibly creamy with a cheesy touch that paired perfectly with the intense flavours of the sauce. It was beautiful, and I would go back there just for this dish. I also tried the Ravioli Cacio e Pepe with charred leeks and brown butter and the Gran Fritto Misto as I was craving fried seafood. Everything was delicious, but if you have the chance to visit Scarpetta, you must try the polenta. I returned to my room and after a warm shower, it was shut-eye time.
The day was going to be busy. So, I had a filling breakfast at Bywater restaurant. The selection was wide, but my eyes went to the pastries section, where I spotted something I adore: Panettone. I did eat some fruits, yoghurt and an egg white omelette, but my black coffee was happily accompanied by this festive Italian cake.
Sun and Sand
After some resting time on the balcony, I headed to the Watersports Centre, where I was supposed to have a
flow rider session (aka surfing) but decided to switch it to something more chilled and went kayaking, did some hydro-biking and stand-up paddle that ended up being great choices to enjoy the sea and have a perfect view of the resort. Afterwards, I went for a swim. Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail is the only private beach in Lusail and I couldn’t miss the chance to dip in its clear waters.
After a quick shower, it was spa time. I headed to ESPA Life for a 90-minute Recharge Salt Stone ritual – a fullbody massage that’s designed to leave you re-energised. After my welcome drink, which was made with rose water, passion fruit and chia seeds, Dema, my therapist, escorted me to my treatment room. The first step before the massage was to choose the oil to be used and Dema recommended that I shouldn’t choose the smell I liked most, but the one that felt stronger. I picked ESPA’s Restorative and Rebalance oil with lavender and sweet orange. At ESPA Life, the treatments begin with a mindful experience where the therapist says a few words to help you disconnect from the world outside and connect with yourself and the moment. The treatment was similar to a hot-stone massage, but instead of black rocks, she used round pink salt blocks. I have to confess that it was one of the most relaxing massages I’ve ever had. She worked in critical areas but in a gentle way. The salt boosted my energy, and I was ready to move on to my next ‘task’: lunch.
The beautiful décor at SUSHISAMBA Doha puts you in the vibrant mood of its tri-cultural-inspired menu which brings dishes from Peru, Japan and Brazil. Wood panels mixed with orange and white accents create a lively atmosphere. The staff told me that at night, it looks even better. They also said that 70% of the SUSHISAMBA menu worldwide is the same, and the other 30% is adjusted to the market where the restaurant is located. I wanted to try a selection of different offerings and went for Shrimp Tempura Donburi, a rice bowl with assorted vegetables and shrimp tempura, Crispy Taquito with yellowtail fish (my favourite of them all), Samba Doha, rolls made with lobster cream in a bed of crispy rice, and Tuna Tataki, seared tuna slices. I ended the meal with Japanese Doughnut, fried fluffy balls accompanied by chocolate sauce and ice cream. I sat on the terrace, and I must say that Doha is perfect for enjoying a delicious meal al fresco at this time of the year.
And because eating was an important part of my staycation, I enjoyed a magnificent Afternoon Tea at Peacock Alley. During my visit, the resort partnered with the jewellery brand Swarovski to create a personalised tea set. My teal Swarovski box was filled with savoury and sweet bites, and my highlights go to the four cheese nachos served in a small ice cream cone and
the Persian doughnut, a fluffy, warm ball with saffron flavour – delicious! If you are a tea enthusiast, you will be impressed with the more than 50 different types of tea from the organic brand Avantcha.
Dinner was booked for 9pm and, after a day of eating, I was hoping to end my night on a lighter tone. To my surprise, The Highmore, located on the 11th floor, was having a Jazz night and it was more about good live music, snacks and drinks. Yay! All I needed to end my stay at Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail in golden style. I chose a portion of nachos and guacamole and peanut butter popcorn (I love, love popcorn) and called it a night.
I had an early morning check-out, but I wished I could have stayed a bit longer. Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail is a place that knows very well how to combine grand style with a feeling of home. The perfect mix between highend destination and resort lifestyle where you don’t need to leave the hotel for anything, a way to forget the world that stayed behind when you entered the doors, and I absolutely loved that feeling. Looking forward to being back soon! ✤

Chichen Itza has 26 Mayan ruins, the most prominent of which are the monuments of the Temple of Kukulcán, the Osario pyramids and the Temple of Xtoloc. Tulum is one of the best-preserved coastal Mayan sites featuring the Temple of the Frescoes, El Castillo and the Temple of the Descending God. their daily activities. So, don’t forget to bring an offering of coffee or bread before meeting the locals.

DJ Againstcelebrities takes us through his journey of following his passion and tasting success at a young age.
What is the story behind the name ‘DJ Againstcelebrities’?
Since childhood, I dreamt about being on stage and sharing the space with big celebrities and artists. Many people think ‘Againstcelebrities’ means versus them. On the contrary, it means ‘with them’ – sharing the stage and playing music with them.
You were lucky to find your passion and start DJing at the age of 12. What are your first memories and experiences around music which made you decide that this was it?
I knew I wanted to be a DJ since I was a kid. When I was seven or eight, my older brother, who is eight years older than me, used to play techno music everywhere – at home and in the car. So, in a way, he was feeding me this music. One day, I wondered why my brother and his friends looked up to DJs and thought, ‘Why don’t I do the same?’ That's how I started my journey of being a DJ and producer. I downloaded the software and started teaching myself everything from scratch.
How do you define your music and what are your favourite musical influences?
I’d define my music as happy – music that makes you smile. It reflects exactly what I'm feeling at that moment. I never play music that I don’t like to impress the crowd. Apart from techno, I admire classical, pop, soul and jazz. There’s something about instruments that calms me down. My biggest influences are Beethoven, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Bill Withers, Prince and Hans Zimmer. There’s always music playing in my house and if it isn’t techno then it's one of these musicians.
You have performed on the biggest stages with the biggest names. Which was your most cherished experience and why? I cannot forget my first festival experience. I was 14 and I was going on stage when I got stopped by security. When I told him I was a DJ and I was up next, he said: “Go return that badge”. So, I had to find one of the organisers and have him speak to the security guard because my set was starting
in seven minutes. This memory will forever stay with me because that's when I knew that I was too young to do what I was doing, and it felt good.
How was the reception to your first single Emergency Broadcast? What are your upcoming projects?
It was better than I expected. It was everything I had imagined and more. A week after the release, a friend of mine came to me and said: “Now we know what goes on inside your brain.” Emergency Broadcast was downloaded and supported by huge artists such as Pete Tong, Massano and Coeus. I currently have five finished projects. I’m expecting to release more music this year. Also, I’m working on an EP with one of the biggest labels on the scene right now.
With already a decade of professional mixing under your belt, how do you see your music and career evolving?
In a career like the one I chose, I believe in connecting short-term goals one at a time until I finally reach my longterm ambition, which is sharing my talent with the world. For this to happen, I must stay consistent and true to myself and work hard to reach that goal.
Having tasted success at a young age, what has been your biggest learning so far?
Success at a young age could feel like a two-edged sword. While it brings joy and confidence, it also presents unique challenges that shape character and understanding. Learning from these experiences is very important for personal growth and future achievements. The journey of success teaches valuable lessons about resilience, humility and the importance of continued effort. One of the challenges I faced at a very young age was being always criticised by my friends and classmates when I first started. I believe that people hate what they don't understand and, if what you're doing doesn't make sense to them, then to them, it's 'useless'. ✤ CONNECT @AGAINSTCELEBRITIES
Need to Know:
The Six Triple Eight is a 2024 American War Drama film released on Netflix. It depicts the plight of World War II’s only all-black women's battalion that was tasked to carry out a mission deemed impossible.
Director: Tyler Perry
Cast: Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian
Looking for unknown stories from World War II? Then this is a must-watch. Writers Kevin Hymel and Tyler Perry have brought to life a story and, more importantly, characters, who played a small but mighty role in propelling the US Army during the war.
The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, led by Captain Charity Adams, played by Kerry Washington, is responsible for sorting through a three-year backlog of undelivered mail, sent by American soldiers and their families to each other. The women of the military division are faced with the mammoth duty of going through the mail – a staggering 17 million pieces – within six months. And it is not the only challenge the women confront. Being all-women and black, the contingent faces discrimination and misogyny. That’s where Captain Adams steers the squadron to not only accomplish their mission but do so within 90 days. Armed with a steely resolve and a never-say-die spirit, she is a figure of furious femininity and ruthless leadership.
Watch it for one of Kerry Washington’s career-best performances and a story that needs to be heard and known for the crucial contributions of a ‘cog in the wheel’ that deserves its due credit in the pages of history.
Like any good spy story with a twist, Black Doves is not just about intrigue, it takes on the big issues of love, loyalty and global politics with aplomb.
Need to Know:
A spy story with a difference – these guys are not working for their country but rather for the highest bidder. When a dangerous situation implodes, vengeance is called for.
Creators: Joe Barton
Cast: Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw, Sarah Lancashire
Helen, played by Keira Knightly, is a mother of twins seemingly happily married to the British Minister of Defence until an apparently random murder on the banks of the River Thames brings her world crashing down.
It quickly emerges that the man is Helen’s lover and she is anything but the archetypal politician’s wife but rather a member of the Black Doves, a paid spy! A visit from her ‘controller’ during a swanky party introduces us to the oddly menacing Reed, Sarah Lancashire, whose performance really shows the depth of her talent. When Helen and her family come under threat, Reed brings in Helen’s old colleague, Sam, to protect her and hunt down the killers and the diplomat’s wife turns highly-skilled avenger in the quest for her lover’s killers.
The series cleverly weaves in both Sam and Helen’s back stories, explaining how they came to be involved in high-stakes political intrigue and violence. And, though we know we should not, we actually find ourselves rooting for the spies turned assassins.
Like any good spy story with a twist, Black Doves is not just about intrigue, it takes on the big issues of love, loyalty and global politics with aplomb. If you try it and love it as much as we did, you’ll be glad to know Season 2 had already been commissioned before the first show ever hit our screens.
THRILLER/SUSPENSE
Beautiful Ugly
By Alice Feeney
By Lauren Mayberry
Looking for something refreshing and fearlessly original? Lend your ears to this latest retro-style album. Lauren Mayberry, the vocalist and percussionist of the Scottish synth-pop band Chvrches has finally come up with a solo album. Vicious Creature remains true to her 80s’ style of pop. Comprising 12 tracks, the album meanders from energetic beats to mellow melodies. Something in the Air and Crocodile Tears are dynamic, anthems of a bold and spirited woman. Punch Drunk is a forceful, high-energy number that delves into her tumultuous mind as she navigates the turbulences of life.
Anywhere But Dancing and Oh, Mother bring out the softened rhythms, the latter stemming from personal space, with the singer addressing her family’s state, gripped by sickness.
With songs written in ballad style, the singer showcases her raw emotions, taking the listener through highs and lows, palpable through the music. Gritty lyrics like ‘I change shapes 'til I get what I want from you
'It's your game, now you're mad that I learned the rules
'We're all snakes, but what else is a girl supposed to do?’
stamp the solo singer’s space – a stepping out and apart from the band, away from her image of being ‘one of the boys’ alongside Chvrches band members Ian Cook, Martin Doherty and Jonny Scott. At just under 38 minutes, the album is a breeze. Vicious Creature is Lauren’s uninhibited ode to femininity and is a fierce expression of her breaking free.
By Rosé
K-Pop music’s BLACKPINK member Roseanne Park, better known as Rosé, has struck out with her debut solo album Rosie. Comprising 12 songs, it traces the trajectory of romantic love in all its stages – from starry-eyed attraction to heartbreak and finally acceptance and moving on.
Number One Girl and 3am are youthful numbers reminiscent of Y2K tunes. Detailing young love, the lyrics are filled with hope, longing and carefreeness.
Two Years and Toxic till The End mark a plateauing and the beginning of a dip in the graph of relationships as the singer grapples with her complicated emotions. Drinks Or Coffee and APT. are high-energy, peppy tracks, with the latter, a colab with Bruno Mars, going viral on social media.
Not The Same and Call It the End mark the bitter but learning phases of her emotional journey, where the singer is beginning to comprehend the tough realities of life and relationships. The songs grow in maturity with more soulful and melodic rhythms, delineating her personal journey. The final track – Dance All Night – raises the album’s arc again as it indicates a young girl’s triumph in overcoming setbacks.
Rosie is a radically different take from the K-pop singer’s previous works with her band, as it reveals a peak into the singer’s personality and personal life. The tracks are an interesting mix, ranging from R&B and Taylor-Swiftlike-pop to a piano ballad, and trap and synth tunes. While some may find the transitions jarring; Rosé fans are sure to enjoy the ride.
Anything that comes with a recommendation from the master of suspense himself, Harlan Coben, is sure to grab our interest. When author Grady Green calls his wife as she is driving to share exciting news, his good day turns very bad. He hears Abby slam on the brakes, get out of the car, then nothing. When he eventually finds her vehicle by a cliff edge, his wife has disappeared.
A year later, still overcome with grief he travels to a tiny Scottish island to try to get his life back on track. Then he sees the impossible – a woman who looks exactly like his missing wife.
Blood and the Badge: The Mafia, Two Killer Cops, and a Scandal That Shocked the Nation
By Michael Cannell
Former New York Times editor Michael Cannell unearths the full story behind Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa, two decorated New York detectives who acted as double agents for the Mafia in 1980s’ Brooklyn.
For more than 10 years, the pair handed over the names of mobsters secretly cooperating with the government and crippled investigations by sharing details of surveillance, phone taps and impending arrests.
When their wrongdoings initially came to light, it appeared they would get off through lack of evidence. But years later, another cop’s determination to get to the truth led to the pair being sentenced to life in prison.
We spotted an article in Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper that has us questioning our whole existence. Apparently, the rise in the number of dot.com billionaires and other assorted nouveau riche has led to a corresponding leap in the demand for professionally trained butlers.
Once the preserve of old-money aristocracy, it seems these days, the butler – preferably with legitimate Queen’s English accent – is something of a status symbol, particularly for oligarchs, Chinese businesspeople, Indian tech billionaires and, unsurprisingly, oil-rich Middle Easterners.
And the rewards can be substantial with salaries up to USD300,000, million-dollar bonuses, cars, watches and private jet travel to the most exclusive destinations. It all sounds rather wonderful. However, if you’re suddenly considering a career change, be aware that a butler’s job can involve anything from silver service at the dining table to protecting your employer’s privacy. One butler even explained his duties encompassed transplanting a fully-grown tree to his employ’s garden and using an army helicopter to search for the family’s lost dog. Reckon you’re qualified? Join the queue, who needs a media degree anyway?
You’d be forgiven for thinking that, in this day and age, with satellites and other eyes in the sky seemingly observing our every move, there couldn’t be much left to surprise us. So, the news that several new species of flora and fauna were discovered during 2024 gave us a sense of wonderment and not a little awe. The BBC reports that, over the past year, scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London, UK, and their collaborators, have classified around 149 plants and 23 fungi from all corners of the globe. Now, that’s all very well, but regular readers of this page will have spotted that we’re somewhat obsessed with fourlegged creatures. So, the discovery of a
vampire hedgehog – no spikes just some seriously pointy teeth – found in Vietnam, and the Cao Bang Crocodile newt – cute little critters, all black with orange tips on their toes – also unearthed in Vietnam, led us down a Google research wormhole where we learned loads and started plotting our own future research trips. One place we think we’ll be avoiding is the Alto Mayo region of Peru where researchers made ‘a shocking discovery’ in the shape of a mysterious blob-headed fish. A type of bistlemouth armoured catfish, we have to say, it’s kinda ugly. But, with the natural world under ever increasing threat, it’s good to know that these curiosities are still going strong and our Earth can still surprise us.
What would you do if you became a social media sensation. Imagine, you make a YouTube or TikTok video and, before you know it, you’ve racked up hundreds of thousands of views. It’s the stuff of dreams, right? Perhaps an entry to the world of fame and fortune and certainly an opportunity to give up the day job.
But not if you’re Miles Laflin, from Bedfordshire, UK. A pool cleaner for many years, he began making work-based content and became known as The Pool Guy. It seems bizarre that videos of a
man cleaning a pool would be interesting or popular but, one such shoot of him cleaning some pool steps has recorded a massive 170 million views on TikTok. The success hasn’t gone to his head though. Having won the high-quality content creator of the year title at the first UK and Ireland TikTok awards, Miles shared that he still cleans pools – but now he travels around the world doing it and continues to make videos in the process. He said: "It's quite crazy to think that many people have seen my videos." But he’s firmly of the opinion that, no matter what your job, there’s an audience for videos about it. Now, where did we put that recorder?
