FROM THE EDITOR

A Humble Message of Sympathy IT would be remiss to begin this month’s issue without mentioning the tragic events of last month at Villagio Mall, but at the same time, the simple words on a page of an editor who wasn’t directly affected by the tragedy can only ring hollow. So all I’m going to say is that words truly cannot express how horrified we at the magazine all were by the events that took place last month, and that our deepest sympathies lie with those who lost loved ones under such horrendous circumstances. We would also like to commend Qatar’s emergency services for their heroic efforts to rescue those trapped inside, during which two of them lost their lives

after being overcome by smoke. We will never forget the images of the firemen carrying those rescued across the roof of the mall, and kneeling down overcome by smoke and grief. We hope that lessons are learnt from these events, and regret that it takes events like this to make us learn these lessons. Serious questions need to be answered, and a real investigation carried out, rather than a witch-hunt for some scapegoat to heap the blame on to, despite the fact that one individual most likely can not be singularly responsible for what happened. May this never, ever happen again.

aking Qatar’s diners to new heights, the Strata restaurant in the InterCon is the country’s highest restaurant and lounge, commanding stunning views of West Bay’s skyline and the coast from the 55th and 56th floor of the hotel. Offering a selection of three caviar and four oyster options, as well as chilled ‘indulgence’ platters of handchosen seafood served alongside Chef ’s sauces, salad and bread, Strata’s menu encourages guests to share their choices while enjoying the country’s striking views in all directions. Contemporary Asian flavours round out Strata’s offering, with sashimi, slow-cooked lobster and smoked cod proving to be early favourites. The Strata Compilation – an adventurous dessert platter for two – plus mango carpaccio, warm apple tartin and homemade ice cream are among Strata’s final course choices, providing a fitting end to the meal for guests.

“Strata provides a dining experience unlike any other in Doha – marketfresh, delicious seafood, drinks, and desserts served at the country’s highest vantage point. InterContinental Doha The City is encouraging our guests to share their selections and experiment with new flavours while the cityscape and skyline provide the ideal backdrop,” said Renzo Cavagliotti, General Manager of InterContinental Doha The City. With a beverage menu encompassing 153 of the finest ingredients, Strata is also set to become a meeting point on Doha’s ‘lounge’ landscape. Classic, signature beverages are available alongside ‘molecular’ refreshments produced through foaming or smoking techniques, with a range of fresh juices and mocktails cleansing the palates of both in-house guests and Doha residents. Strata is open for dinner, six nights a week and is closed on Mondays.

A

funky and modern new social hotspot in the hotel, the name suggests a lively and energetic space, bustling with activity throughout the week. The venue is enveloped in a honeycomb palette and textured walls, with modern deco interiors of white and hexagonal wood grain tables complemented by brightly coloured seating. Contemporary sculptures pepper the lounge, creating minimal outbursts of creativity that complement the colourful interiors. HIVE conveniently provides a multi-presence venue whether it is for a relaxing coffee during the afternoon or bustling downtime after work with colleagues. HIVE aims to provide the perfect environment for social and interactive gatherings with special deals on select days. As a result, the venue is offering three new dining deals this month: - ‘After Work Evenings At Hive’ takes place every day from 5pm to 7pm catering to the energetic crowd looking to relax

after a busy day in the office, offering a 35% discount on all food and beverage. - ‘Ladies Night At Hive’ is each Tuesday from 7pm to 1am, where all ladies enjoy a buy one, get one free on selected beverages as well as a 50% discount on a buffet dinner at The Square, located on the second floor. - Wednesdays are ‘Cheese and Wine’ evenings where patrons can enjoy a wide selection of cheese from around the world accompanied by three glasses for QR180 per person from 7pm to 11pm. “HIVE is designed for different elements of uniqueness. From the colours to the mood to the menu, this space personifies a creative environment,” says Nick Flynn, Director of Food and Beverage at the Inter-Continental Doha The City. “To ensure that this atmosphere is upheld, we have introduced exciting daily offers which reflect the personality that is HIVE and that of the guests who will join us.”

THE SCOPE

LOVE IT ! From Moo to You

SO OBVIOUS!

Don’t Marry Your Relatives, Says Poll

According to a poll conducted recently by Doha Debates, the majority of Arabs believe that consanguineous marriages (marriages between blood relatives) should be discouraged because of the risks of physical deformities, poor health and mental illnesses for the children borne of such a marriage. 78% voted for discouraging such marriages and promoting awareness of the potential risks involved. This shows an encouraging shift of opinions in the Arab world against intermarriage, which just isn’t a good idea!

Workers being treated poorly

Despite labour laws being laid down by the Labour Department against forcing labourers to work ridiculously long hours in high temperatures, it seems that many unscrupulous companies are disregarding these laws and forcing their workers to toil for up to 12 hours or more throughout the blazing midday heat. These poor guys make up the cheap labour that drives the economy of the region, and yet they are treated terribly. Laws are slowly changing this, but they need to be more strictly enforced.

HATE IT! Tony’s Question of the Month:

O

Why Do We Want a Unified GCC?

ne of the major discussions at the recent GCC Summit was the prospect of a GCC Union, the foundations of a political and economic zone emulating that of the European Union. One of the states pushing most heavily for that was Bahrain, who suggested an initial union of Bahrain, Saudi and Qatar. While Bahrain will obviously benefit most from becoming more closely tied to two of the most resource-rich countries in the world, the ramifications for all those involved are only positive. In order to create this union Bahrain and Qatar will have to finally resolve their differences over the disputed islands that sit between them, and push the plans for the Friendship

8

Bridge ahead more rapidly, which will ultimately benefit the economies and relations of both countries, which is no bad thing. However, the wider ramifications of a union are much more important. In the face of increasing sabre rattling and aggressive posturing by Iran, a powerful and resource-rich country with nuclear aspirations (whether peaceful or not is irrelevant, as there is a fine line between the two), a unified GCC will create a balance of power that will resist Iran’s attempts to become the dominant force in the region. Again, the tiny state of Bahrain is eager for this, as Iran has made no secret of its ambitions to annex the country. The GCC countries aren’t perfect, not by a long shot, but politically they

are hugely importantly on a global scale for one main reason. They are one of the few examples of where Muslim states and the rest of the world are cooperating well, and where Muslims and people of all creeds and colours are living together happily and peacefully, in mutual respect and tolerance. This is an example that could be followed by societies in many countries around the world, and this must be protected and allowed to prosper. The GCC is a gateway between East and West, and therefore a unified, peaceful, stable and economically powerful GCC benefits the whole world. Unfortunately, the results of the discussions at the summit were inconclusive, but the idea is at least gaining momentum.

THE DOHA MINUTE

“At the beginning I couldn’t even imagine living here a year, and now I can’t really imagine leaving.”

FACT catches up with Victoria Scott, aka Tory, a full-time mother and parttime freelance journalist (and FACT contributor), who writes for magazines both in Qatar and the UK, and presents a radio show called Meet the Philharmonic on QF Radio.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN QATAR?

We arrived in January 2009, so it’s been almost three-and-a-half years. It’s gone tremendously quickly. At the beginning I couldn’t even imagine living here a year, and now I can’t really imagine leaving. Our son was born here. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LIVING IN QATAR?

The sunny winter days. We’re from the UK, where grey, drizzly, short wintry days are the norm. I never get bored of waking up to blue skies and sunshine. AND LEAST?

It’s a tie between the stifling summer heat and the crazy roads. I think I’ll go for the roads on balance, as the summer heat is less likely to do me serious harm! WHAT DO YOU DO TO SWITCH OFF AND RELAX?

In the winter, we head to Aspire Park with drinks and snacks and play football with our son. In the summer, we drive to Wakra Fishing Harbour where the sea breeze makes it a bit cooler, and go for a stroll. We love it there. TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF THAT NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW?

I’m nuts about musicals. I love to sing (although I wouldn’t call myself a singer) and played the part of the Russian’s wife in Chess at University. I got to sing “I know him so well.” Probably just as well there weren’t any recordings made, really... FACT QATAR JUNE june Issue qatar.indd 9

Manga Comes to Qatar! A competition featuring one of the most popular forms of comic book art is coming to Qatar courtesy of the Qatar Japan 2012 team at the Qatar Museums Authority.

A

manga drawing competition entitled “Qatari Culture Manga Style!” was launched last month. It’s to coincide with the year-long series of cultural, sporting, and business events and activities planned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Qatar and Japan. The competition requires entrants to submit a short manga cartoon that showcases an aspect of the Qatari culture and tradition that would interest the Japanese audience. The drawings have to include a message depicting Qatari culture and can showcase it in any way possible. The concept behind the competition is to present a fusion of the two cultures by representing Qatari culture using a Japanese art form. This competition is open to Qataris and non-Qataris. The winners, including three Qatari nationals and one resident, will have their entries printed in a booklet and distributed during “Ferjaan: Qatar in Tokyo” week, taking place in Tokyo, Japan, in September 2012, and the first place Qatari winner will also get a free Japanese language course presented by the competition’s sponsor, Qatar Eastern Language Centre. The entry can be as short as 3-4 pages only. Qataris are requested to submit the entry in Arabic, while non-Qataris may submit in English. Winning entries will be translated to Japanese for the audience in Tokyo, Japan. The judging panel will consist of both Qatari and Japanese residents in Qatar. GO: Further information and details are available on the Qatar-Japan 2012 website www.qatarjapan2012.com. The deadline for submissions is 21st June, 2012.

OCCA is making big moves in Doha’s nightlife scene, with regular events every weekend courtesy of DJ Mark Bambach. This elegant waterfront venue has been serving its Mediterraneaninfluenced cuisine since 2009, but it is only recently, since respected entertainment brand Coco Latte took over its events, that it has been entertaining revellers each weekend with regular nights and excellent oneoff events. So, his credentials are well established! On Thursdays, Mark will be hosting the ‘Beautiful House’ nights, where he will be spinning vocal uplifting house, and on Fridays, he brings us ‘R&B Divas’, where he lays down commercial R&B and classy house music from the past two decades. These nights will take place every Thursday and Friday throughout June. The venue is open from 9pm till 2am every weekend, and entry is free. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! We all love our Dads – they’re always there for us, with a helping hand (or a helping handout!). There are so many ways to show your appreciation for your old man, but we have just compiled a few that will show him just how much you care this June 17…

2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil

FOR all the football-obsessed fathers out there, this is the perfect present. Calvin Klein Fragrances

EVERY guy likes to smell good, and every girl loves a man who smells good. Next up for a perfect gift are two fragrances from Calvin Klein. The first one is ckfree blue - fresh, clean and masculine - this is a bright scent which embodies the modern and energetic man. Packed with notes of mandarin, spearmint, ozone and white leather, this is a great day scent for a man out and about in the summer sun. The second fragrance from CK is the limited edition Eternity Summer, which is much more of a romantic and serene scent. More floral than the ckfree blue, this one is ideal for those ‘sundowner’ moments. With hints of orange blossom, Japanese pear martini accord, white musks and tonka bean, let your dad smell his best this summer with this winner.

Ritz-Carlton Spa Day

EVEN men like a bit of pampering and TLC every once in a while (probably more than they will admit to), so why not give your Dad the gift of a spa day? Let him experience the rejuvenating magic of a Ritz-Carlton Spa getaway without the stress of travelling away from Doha. This all-day mini vacation includes a 60-minute Ritz-Carlton Massage, Deep Purifying Facial, a Body Scrub as well as an access to the Pool during the day of the visit. Guaranteed head to toe bliss! TAG Heuer has partnered with the Monaco Grand Prix (probably the most glamorous one of them all) and the Automobile Club de Monaco due to their shared wealth of shared values and history. With motor racing and sports timing indented in TAG Heuer’s blood since it invented “Time of Trip”, any one who doesn’t own a TAG Heuer watch is seriously missing out especially when Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton are the Brand Ambassadors. Happy Snappers Get Happier! 2012 has already seen a number of photography competitions in Bahrain. With our own ‘Natural Bahrain’ finishing up in March, photography fanatics can now get excited about not one, but TWO more competitions that are taking place in June. Here’s a little bit more about them both….

Canon UEFA Euro 2012

F

ootball fans will be on the edge of their seats this month due to the kick off of the UEFA Euro Cup. To celebrate the tournament, Canon Middle East is offering the chance for all budding photographers to get their talents seen. They’ve launched a Middle East and North and East Africa-wide photo and video competition across 45 countries, inviting everyone to share their passion for football. The new initiative is in line with Canon Europe’s sponsorship of the Euro 2012, as well as being part of the 10th anniversary of Canon Middle East, where last month was dedicated to the power of family and friendship. The theme of the competition is entitled “Celebrate your passion for football”, and offers fans the chance to win a travel package for two to a city of their choice including flights and accommodation – what more could you want! Mai Youssef, the Corporate Communications Manager of Canon Middle East, said, “We are pleased to launch this Middle East, North and East Africa-wide competition which will serve as a platform for us to share our passion for the captured image. Without a doubt, football is one of the most loved sports across the Middle East, North and East Africa and through this competition we want to inspire people’s creativity and innovation by using the medium of photography and videography.” The competition will be hosted on the Canon Facebook page, and entries can include videos or pictures. Canon fans can select the best submissions by ‘liking’ their favourite uploads and the first, second and third winners will walk away with pretty exciting travel prizes. GO: To find out more about the competition, please visit www.facebook.com/CanonME.

Urban Photographer of the Year

T

he Urban Photographer of the Year competition has opened its submissions for the fourth year in a row, where for the first time applicants from all over the globe can submit their images. First launched in 2007 by the leading global real estate services firm CBRE, the contest initially focused on Europe and the Middle East and Africa. The competition is now the largest of its kind in the world, and last year saw 10,000 entries from more than 74 countries. This year’s theme is “Cities at Work”, and is designed to challenge amateur and professional photographers alike to capture what they consider to be the essence of urban life at any time of day, whether the content is inspirational, entertaining or poignant. The overall winner of the 2012 competition will get to chose a luxury photo safari from a range of exotic locations sponsored by CBRE. Two runners up will also be given prizes. The rules are that each individual may submit one image for each hour of the

competition, making it a maximum of 24 images. Past winners have drawn inspiration from a vast spectrum of city sights including cycling commuters in Hamburg to an urban desert storm in Saudi Arabic to a city fireworks display in Hungary. Last year’s overall winner was taken by Victor Melo from Portugal, who submitted a picture of a Tunisian stallholder at work in Tunis’ ancient souq. The Chairman of the judging panel, Martin Grahame Dunn, said, “Urban photography is a much neglected part of our social heritage. It is not an accidental by-product of modern life but a deliberate and creative activity. This competition has opened a new and stimulating door in the photography world and its format allows all manner of photographers to bring every hour of the day alive from thousands of different perspectives.”

GO: Photographers have until June 30 to submit their entries. The full list of winners will be announced in August. To get your images seen, log on to www. cbrephotographer.com.

Many students decide to pursue university degrees in finance or business management, believing that this is the fastest way to a top-earning job. However, the simple fact of the matter is that you’ll only be one of thousands of similar graduates competing for a limited number of jobs. You may have to spend years working hard for peanuts just to get experience before securing a well-paid job. The best way to earn big bucks is to pick a specialised field in which there is a high demand for Arabic graduates, ideally in a new but fast-growing sector in the region, such as logistics or engineering. Why did the UCL decide to set up a campus in Qatar?

University College London in Qatar What: Museum studies,

conservation and archeology Best for: Indiana Jones wannabes Tell me more: This partnership between UCL, one of the UK’s leading multidisciplinary universities, Qatar Foundation and Qatar Museums Authority has brought the first British University to Qatar. The institution offers a number of postgraduate programmes, including Master of Arts and MPhil/PhD, in Archeology, Conservation, Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies. To further support your studies, UCL staff and students will have a presence at Qatari museums, archaeological sites and conservation facilities. Apply: www.ucl.ac.uk/qatar

We came to Qatar at the invitation of Qatar Foundation and Qatar Museums Authority. Both organisations recognise the importance of cultural heritage studies. Prior to now, very little in the way of archaeology, conservation and museum studies teaching has been offered in the Gulf. By providing these subjects in Qatar, it helps educate a new generation in the protection of cultural heritage and the management of museums and galleries. UCL Qatar will not only act as a centre of teaching, but also a centre of research. UCL’s Institute of Archaeology is Europe’s largest and one of its most prestigious. From there alone we have relocated a number of research projects of great significance to Qatar.

What are the main areas of study that the UCL Qatar will initially offer?

Our overall specialism is cultural heritage studies. We have three subjects that we will be teaching: archaeology, conservation and museum studies, all Master’s and PhD degrees. The programmes are also quite unique in that they have been tailored to have a specific focus on Qatar, the Gulf and the region. So they are new and innovative programmes that have been carefully pieced together, rather than being replicas of existing programmes that are taught back in London.

How has it been working with the Qatar Foundation and Qatar Museums Authority to establish a campus in Qatar?

Working with QMA has been a delight. We’ve delivered our first series of short courses to QMA staff, focusing on issues as diverse as

ceramic repair and organising an international art exhibition. A number of QMA staff have even applied to study on our degree programmes and we very much look forward to their arrival. And Qatar Foundation have given us the tools and support to make this operation a success, not least supporting us in developing phenomenal laboratories and teaching facilities on the second floor of the Georgetown Building, where we are housed.

How has initial interest in courses at UCL Qatar been?

Very positive. The Museum and Gallery Practice MA is our most popular. There really is a lot of interest in museums and galleries as a potential career path amongst the local population, and in particular from female students. The Conservation Studies MSc is doing very well too in terms of the number of high quality applications it has attracted. Archaeology is probably seen as the least glamorous of the three, but interestingly we have attracted a number of excellent applications from overseas for this course.

What are the future for UCL Qatar?

We’re concentrating on establishing our Master’s programmes for the time being. We also look forward to expanding our research portfolio and welcoming PhD students. We welcome our first intake of students in September 2012. It’s a very hectic time as we prepare for this, but we are very excited to get our degree programmes up and running. One of the next things on our horizon is the launch of our new website, which again will be a great vehicle in helping to attract future students to come and study with us. We are very proud to be flying the flag as the first British university in Qatar! FACT QATAR JUNE

Classical Music on Camera The Pearl is the star of an ambitious new music project, the brainchild of two talented Doha expats. Victoria Scott goes behind the scenes...

T

ower 31 of The Pearl has something of a creative buzz about it nowadays. The chance meeting of two of its residents, Vincent Corver and Nyk Schmalz, has led to the creation of a brand new piece of piano music with accompanying video, shot exclusively at The Pearl. Corver, a concert pianist and recording artist with EMI Classics, moved to Qatar last August to begin work as the manager of the new Steinway Piano Gallery under the Construction Development Company (CDC) Qatar. Meanwhile Schmalz, a director, actor and new media producer with extensive experience in filmmaking, moved to Doha from Los Angeles at the same time. Together, they hatched a plan to fuse classical music and modern filmmaking. Despite being known primarily as

24

a concert pianist, Corver has been composing music for many years, and his influences are not strictly classical. As a child he became friends with Giorgio Tuinfort, who in later life became a music producer, working with stars like Michael Jackson, David Guetta and Akon. Corver and Tuinfort remain friends, and it’s clear that Vincent has a passion for popular as well as classical music, and is keenly aware of the importance of using visual media to popularise music of all kinds. “We live in a time where visual entertainment plays a vital role in our community,” says Corver. “And standard classical music isn’t gaining popularity. I believe that’s because watching a classical musician on stage doesn’t mean much to the average soul. Yet symphonic music is very popular when it’s the

soundtrack for a major film release.” Pondering these issues, Corver and Schmalz decided to try something new. “We’re putting extra-ordinary visuals together with extra-ordinary music,” he says. “We feel that there’s a huge gap in the market. We asked ourselves some important questions: Might there be a shortage of good music on TV? Why is it that “eye-candy” music videos are usually combined with brainless beats? Do we actually want to listen to this music or are our eyes simply fooling us to believe this is what we want to hear? So we’ve put great music together with a great video – something we believe is rare in the market today.” The pair decided to use their Doha home as the backdrop for their new music video, to accompany Corver’s newly composed piano song, ‘Why’. I ask them why they chose the Pearl as their location. “It’s the most vibrant

It was an incredible experience ... We were just all so excited about the project. and exciting location in Qatar, and it has the best views,” explains Corver. “When I first arrived at the Pearl last year it was the height of summer. Everyone was away escaping the heat, and it was such a ghost town. I was so glad to meet Nyk. But now of course, it’s full of people, and such an exciting place to be.” Both Corver and Schmalz star in the video, which is set in two apartments in Tower 31 - one of which boasts a Steinway grand piano. Sarah Dorani, the video’s Art Director, secured the use of fashion items from outlets on the Pearl, including clothes from Calvin Klein, Salvatore Ferragamo, Lancel, Etro, Georg Jensen and Gianfranco Ferre. And to the team’s delight, they were also loaned a Ferrari for the shoot. “CDC Qatar supported us wholeheartedly with the loan of the Steinway grand piano, and United

Fashion Company (UFC) allowed us to use any of their brands from the stores on the Pearl that we wanted, which was fantastic,” says Corver. “The video wouldn’t have been the same without them.” For many of those involved in the video, it was their first experience of filmmaking. “For lots of us, including me, this was a first,” says Corver. “It was an incredible experience. Everyone involved gave their time for free. We were just all so excited about the project.” I ask Corver to tell me about the story for the video. “It’s about a woman leading two different lives,” he says. “She’s seen with two different men. The first has a luxury life style, with fast cars, music and beautiful clothes. Man number two is great fun but not as rich, so you see them doing things like spray-painting hearts, and

sharing lots of cheeky moments and laughter.” Corver also gets to exercise one of his other talents in the video – fencing. “I’ve competed in fencing at a high level,” he says. “And it’s a great device, I think. The blow of the sword signifies the love that is destroyed, and it hints at two men fighting for the same woman.” I ask Corver what sort of market he and Schmalz are hoping to reach. “A major record label has expressed strong interest,” he tells me. “We’re planning an official launch in Doha. We aim to publicise the video in the international market, like MTV and other major music networks. This sort of production is a whole new direction in our professional world. The sky is the limit.” GO: To find out more about the video and its release date, log on to www.facebook.com/whythevideo

Making Mirrors

By Gotye WHAT’S IT LIKE:

This is actually the third studio album from the Belgian/Australian artist Gotye, though you would be forgiven for thinking it’s his first. And this is largely thanks to the wild success of his breakout single ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’, the second from the album. The success was helped in no small part by a small group of independant musicians in Canada called Walk Off the Earth, who released a YouTube video of their cover of the single featuring all five musicians playing the song on the same guitar. However, they can’t be given ALL the credit (despite the fact that this particular journalist admittedly had never even heard of Gotye until he saw that cover version), as Gotye was already enjoying a certain measure of success prior to that video. It must have certainly widened his fan-base though, as it wasn’t until after this video that we suddenly heard the song being played endlessly on the radio! But there’s no denying that ‘Somebody That I Used Know’ is an extremely infectious song - powerful, touching and full of raw emotion, it captures that sense of wounded indignance that a messy break up often leaves. And the rest of the album follows suit, with some good and original pop that showcases his singing talents - think Sting for the 21st Century!

By Lara Scandar

Lara Scandar is an American-born Arabic singer of Italian, Egyptian and Lebanese descent who rose to prominence after reaching the semi-finals of the Lebanese TV talent show Star Academy, representing Egypt in the competition. Scandar is playing the very difficult game of attempting to straddle the Arabic and Western worlds of music, to limited effect. She was criticised in the talent show for not being ‘Arabic’ enough, though her singing still earned her a decent place. She’s got the looks, and her voice is better than some British and American pop stars who’ve enjoyed much more success. The album is well-produced, but does however lack originality, with a collection of oriental-flavoured dance tracks overladen with Scandar’s vocals. Think Inna with a Middle Eastern touch. It’s going to take more than that to be a global hit these days!

C

By Rihanna

By Madonna

This is the twelfth studio album from the Queen of Pop, and as usual, some of the industry’s finest have rolled out to produce it - most notably William Orbit, Benny Benassi and Martin Solveig. Which is lucky, really, because without the talents of these producers it’s possible there would be nothing worth talking about here. The album feels hugely hit and miss, with some parts being truly inspired and others absolutely cringeworthy. For example, ‘Turn Up the Radio’ is a fantastic track where the dance music backing track complements Madonna’s vocals to create something truly special. On the other hand, on ‘Gang Bang’ the only thing wrong with the song is Madonna - her laborious and cliched lyrics sound like something a twelve year-old would rap over a dance track. There’s enough on there to make it a worthwhile purchase, but only for Madonna fans.

C+

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

Nowhere can the ever-creeping influence of UK and European dance music on US RnB be more felt than on this, Rihanna’s latest album. Scottish DJ and producer Calvin Harris produced two of the tracks, and dubstep makes an appearance thanks to Chase & Status. The good news is that the result, by and large, is a successful blend of Rihanna’s soulful and powerful vocals and backing tracks that manage to be dance-floor friendly without being too cheesy. ‘We Found Love’ was a summer smash hit, and ‘We All Want Love’ is a pleasant ballad. In other parts, the not-so-subtle sexual metaphor can get a bit tiresome, but this is more of an issue with the genre as a whole, though Rihanna does seem to spout more than her fair share. Whilst not as good as Rated R, it’s still a decent offering that will maintain her status as one of the industry’s most successful RnB singers.

Fantasy

Through the Keyhole By Stephen King

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

The Wind Through the Keyhole sees the main protagonist, the gunslinger Roland Deschain, and his group forced to pause their travels and take shelter from a fierce storm. Whilst waiting it out, Roland begins to tell a story to the group to pass the time, which forms the basis for the novel. In the story, Roland is a young man, who is sent by his father to a small town to help them against the Skin-Man, a shapeshifter who is terrorising and butchering the townsfolk. The difficult part is finding out who the Skin-Man is, as he never goes on killing sprees in his human form. Together with the town’s sherriff, Roland seeks to expose the Skin-Man and capture or kill him.

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

This is the eighth book in Stephen King’s Dark Tower series - what he describes as his magnus opus, and is definitely his attempt at high fantasy. Whether you consider it so or not, you can’t deny that the scope of the series is immense, with mythological figures and heroic characters. Though it’s the eighth book, this one isn’t in chronological order, actually taking place between volumes four and five. While it’s a good story on its own, it’s much better appreciated as part of the whole, so if you’re not B+ familiar with the Dark Tower series, it might be best to read up before taking on this book.

The Expats

By S.J. Bolton

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

Set in England’s famous Cambridge University, Dead Scared follows the story of Detective Constable Lacey Flint, who is recruited by an old colleague, DI Mark Joesbury, to go undercover on the campus to investigate a spate of apparent student suicides. However, the similarities between the students, who are all socially unconfident and lonely personality types, leads the investigators to believe that someone is preying on their insecurities to either compel them to suicide, or committing the murders themselves...

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

This is the second of a planned series of books featuring the same two characters by Bolton, but there’s absolutely no need to have read the first to enjoy this one. Bolton is very good at building the suspense through the plot and the characters, and the added drama comes from the elitist and exclusive environment of one of England’s poshest universities. The two characters have a great chemistry together, and you become especially closely involved with DC Flint, whose own B+ vulnerabilities are exposed by the situation she’s facing.

by Haruki Murakami WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

Self-defence expert and part-time assassin Aomame finds herself in a weird alternate reality after following a taxi driver’s enigmatic suggestion. Simultaneously, aspiring writer Tengo finds his reality becoming distorted when he takes on a ghost-writing job for a mysterious author. Eventually the two stories converge, and the two characters are bound together by many strange events over the course of a year.

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

The massively-hyped release of this celebrated writer’s latest offering created massive anticipation, to the point where people queued for a copy outside bookstores. Does it live up to the hype? Well, this really depends - this book is NOT for everyone. Casual readers might find the 900+ page book a laborious read, but more dedicated enthusiasts will lap up the intricate storyline, rich characters and ever-present surrealism with relish. The book does, however, seem to lose some momentum towards the second half, but this is most certainly one of those books that leaves a gaping hole in your life B+ once you’ve turned the last page!

By Chris Pavone

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

Washington resident Kate suddenly finds herself as a housewife when her husband Dexter is posted to a lucractive new job in Luxembourg. Initially, it seems like a boring life for her, until her boredom drives her to start noticing odd things about her neighbours and the other expats she meets. A little bit of snooping begins to uncover further strange behaviours, and soon she begins to suspect that everything around her is not all that it seems. Finally, we begin to see revelations about Kate herself, and a whole bunch of mystery and intrigue ensues...

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

This book requires a certain amount of dedication to begin with - strange facts and suspicious occurrences only hint at hidden secrets at first. However, the book rapidly builds pace about halfway through, and the revelations keep on coming, until you literally can’t stop turning the pages. The ending is quite explosive, as layer upon layer of secrets are peeled away to reveal the true nature of all the B characters within. Not exactly high fiction, but a fun read nevertheless! WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

After discovering clues on Earth to an alien culture in another galaxy, a team of scientists follow the clues to a distant corner of the universe, believing them to be an invitation. However, when they get there, they find the truth to be far more terrifying. Which is lucky, really, because otherwise the film might’ve been a bit boring...

28

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING:

So many reasons, but the main one would be Ridley Scott. The legendary producer/ director of the original space horror flick Alien (amongst many other classics) has alluded to loose connections with the old Alien movie and its sequels, although the famous ‘Xenomorphs’ themselves do not make an appearance in this movie. Then we have the actors, most notably Michael Fassbender (300, Inglorious Basterds, X-Men), Noomi Rapace (Girl With a Dragon Tattoo, Sherlock Holmes)

and Charlize Theron (Hancock, The Road, Monster) among others. And then there is the involvement as a co-writer of Damon Lindelof, co-creator of the mystery series Lost, who is sure to bring some real mystery and plot twists to the project. Garnish it with some stunning CGI effects and some good ol’ fashioned alien-related horror, and you have what looks to be one of the most exciting sci-fi thrillers in recent years.

However, what they find isn’t what they expected - the man who placed the ad doesn’t seem crazy at all. In fact, he is rather convincing...

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING:

The deliciously off-beat premise for this indie movie is a good start, as the advert itself is hilarious: “Wanted: Somebody to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You’ll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. Safety not guaranteed.” Then you have the acting skills of one of the queens of deadpan off-beat comdey herself, Aubrey Plaza (Funny People, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), which adds an exciting element. What makes the whole thing even more entertaining is that the story stems from a real ad that was placed in a newspaper in the US! You just know Tom Cruise loved playing this part, and that most of the female population of planet Earth (and some of the male) will too!

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World follows the story of a man (Steve

Carrell) in a world facing annihilation thanks to a massive meteor, who embarks on a road trip to meet his high-school sweetheart after his wide leaves him in a panic. However, when his beautiful but crazy next-door neighbour (Kiera Knightley) comes along for the ride, his plans are disrupted somewhat... Playing the harmonica... Yes, that’s the first thing we’d take up if the world was about to end!

Rock of Ages

D: Adam Shankman C: Julianne Hough, Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: A small-town boy and a country girl head to Hollywood to pursue their dreams of becoming famous, and meet each other on the infamous Sunset Strip, where the hedonistic and decadent 80’s glam metal scene is in full swing. They get caught up in the crazy world of The Bourbon Room, a rock venue fighting for survival from developers who want to knock it down. WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING: Well, we couldn’t fit any more names at the top, so we’ll put them here instead: Catherine Zeta Jones (who has already proven her musical credentials in Chicago), Russell Brand, and Paul Giamatti, and the character of Stacee Jaxx in all his drug-addled, boob-signing glory played by Tom Cruise looks absolutely superb. The movie, based on the smash hit Broadway musical, is a rip-roaring journey through 80’s glam metal, and looks like really good fun. Bring it on!

To Rome With Love is a quirky comedy a la Woody Allen about the lives of a group of Italian and American people living in Rome, and the complicated romances, friendships and affairs between them. Thanks to Allen lots of famous people are in it, including Penelope Cruz, Ellen Page, Jessie Eisenberg and Alec Baldwin.

The 100m dash for dandies was always a popular event...

Smartphones with LABELS

Smartphones are no new thing – once the staple of important businessmen and spoilt rich kids, now the whole world is getting connected these days, with iPhones, BlackBerrys, Samsung Galaxies and HTCs keeping people online whenever and wherever they are. However, what do the rich kids and CEOs buy now in order to stand out? Well, they buy one of these…

Porsche P’9981 We love all things Porsche Design, from their sheesha pipes (yes, really!) to their shaving kits and even sportswear. Porsche Design already had a range of mobile phones, with cases cut from solid blocks of aluminium alloy, but this is the first time they’ve turned their hands to a smartphone, with amazing results. This particular phone, the result of a collaboration with BlackBerry, recently won “Smartphone of the Year” for 2012 at the prestigious Plus X Awards, chiefly due to combining BlackBerry’s excellent functional capabilities and Porsche Design’s cutting-edge design. Running on the latest BlackBerry 7.1 OS, the phone boasts an enhanced 1.2 GHz processor and 8GB of onboard memory, with an additional 16GB micro SD card included in box. Capable of 720 HD video, the phone boasts both front and rear cameras. Further enhancing the exclusivity of the phone, you’ll be able to show off with a very distinctive limited edition PIN Series only available to Porsche Design P’9981 users – a feature that is extremely exciting to BlackBerry aficionados, but completely irrelevant to everyone else!

Prada Phone by LG The Prada by LG 3.0 is the third handset from LG’s collaboration with the Italian fashion house. Aimed at the fashion-conscious consumer, this handset comes adorned with Prada’s signature Saffiano pattern. Besides its pretty looks, the smartphone packs formidable specs such as an 8-megapixel camera ,8GB of user memory, and a dualcore/dual channel 1GHz processor and dual band Wi-Fi. The smartphone runs Gingerbread (Android 2.3) with a scheduled Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) update to come by Q2 2012, and coupled with a huge 4.3-inch NOVA High Brightness Display, this puts it almost on a par with Samsung’s flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Nexus (but not quite). With every detail designed for chic simplicity, this handset also boasts LG’s signature Floating Mass Technology, optically enhancing the thinness of its already impressive 8.5mm depth, with minimal hardkeys completing the sleek simple finish. While not the most heavily stylised phone featured here, nor does it boast the most premium materials and build, it is the most impressive in terms of software and specs.

Vertu Constellation Quest Ferrari Smartphone Take one astronomically pricey phone, brand it with a supercar badge, add an overly elaborate name, and slap it with a price tag that would make Carlos Slim raise an eyebrow, and what do you have? A Vertu smartphone is what. Not that we’re saying the Vertu smartphone is not a good phone – the device boasts a sapphire crystal keypad, a titanium battery cover, and the Ferrari link isn’t just skin deep, with a Ferrari engine coating finish, Ferrari leather trim and a tachometer-inspired clock. However, it does seem to be more form over function. While the hardware is unsurpassed, it bafflingly uses the outdated Symbian S60 OS – software which has been dropped by Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson. The OS has, on the other hand, been heavily modified by Vertu to include a whole range of exclusive features. Buyers also get Ferrari-related services, such as a dealer locator and notification of upcoming Ferrarirelated events. Even the ringtones are Ferrari-oriented, as buyers get three variations of a track-flogged 458 Italia to assign to contacts.

Aston Martin This is one that’ll get the James Bond fans and petrol heads among you really excited. The Mobiado Aston Martin Grand Touch is essentially a Samsung Nexus S (note: NOT the flagship Galaxy Nexus) dressed up in an extremely stylish Aston Martin design with a staggering list of customised luxury materials. For starters, the Grand Touch Aston Martin comes with 139 carats of sapphire crystal, an insert which is actually made out of gold mother of pearl, and a stunning CNC machine-anodized aluminium body. The buttons themselves are sapphire crystal, while the screws are all made out of gunmetal stainless steel. Not only that, Mobiado adds more class to the battery cover by using a single piece of sapphire crystal. Other hardware specifications include a 4-inch display at 480 × 800 resolution, a 5-megapixel camera, but unfortunately, it only runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and not the latest Ice Cream Sandwich. This is a truly exclusive phone that you won’t find in any mall in the Gulf. If you really want one, you’ll have to contact Mobiado directly, and hope that your spending clout bags you one of this limited run.

Tag Heuer We featured Tag Heuer’s MERIDIIST mobile phones last year, and while we absolutely loved these extremely stylish smartphones, aside from having a ridiculously long battery life they were a little limited in features. Not so any more, as Tag have now released this stunning smartphone, called the LINK. Featuring a 1 GHz processor, Google Android 2.2 operating system, and software customizations, this luxury smart phone is designed in Switzerland and hand-assembled in France. Made of high-end materials like steel, 18k rose gold or titanium paired with rubber, alligator skin or leather trim, it runs a skinned (modified in a special Tag Heuer style) version of Android Froyo which, while somewhat outdated, does allow you access to the hundreds of thousands of apps available on Android, and the User Interface looks very good with the Tag Heuer customisation. It also boasts two applications exclusive to the LINK: So Apps and TAG Heuer Mobile Security. And, most impressively, like the MERIDIIST it boasts a standby (can remain on without any use) time of up to 330hrs, or around a fortnight!

LAB TEST

WACOM CINTIQ 12WX AIMED squarely at the graphic designers and digital artists out there, the Wacom Cintiq 12WX is a pressure-sensitive tablet and display on which you can directly edit, with the help of a stylus, vector art and digital illustrations on Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, or other digital imaging software. It’s really for anyone seriously interested in digital graphic design, but completely useless for anyone else, so if you’re not a designer, you might as well turn the page now. If you ARE a graphic designer, the big question is, how does the 12WX fare against other similar tablet and stylus setups? In terms of hardware, not so good – there are better looking tablets out there that do the same job, with thinner edges that make them less bulky. In addition, the extremely bulky cables that provide the power and link the tablet to your desktop make matters worse. The 12-inch screen isn’t a bad size, however, and there are bigger options available, with the 20-inch 20WSX and the 21.3-inch 21UX. Be prepared to pay for them, though, as all three options are relatively expensive. However, when you actually find the room on your desk for the 12WX, and get it all set up, that’s when things get better. The quality of the picture on the screen, and

the responsiveness to your actions, are both excellent. It’s a smooth and engaging experience, and will prove satisfying for artists who do a lot of brush-based digital graphics. However, a minor gripe is that the responsiveness of the stylus on the edges of the screen decreased somewhat, and this is where all the menus and tabs are, so that changing functions and so on can be really fiddly. On the side of the screen are programmable clusters of buttons that can be given different commands depending on your preferences. It also has a programmable switch on the pen, and customiSable pressure sensitivity for the pen and the eraser.

All this means that the tablet can be set up and customised to your own personal needs to a large extent, improving the usability a great deal. And the biggest bonus? Well, the makers have wisely recognised that many ‘artistic’ types tend to be lefthanded, and so they’ve given the 12WX a symmetrical design, with button clusters on both sides, that can be used by both right and lefthanded people. Smart! Overall, the tablet itself works very well as a graphic design instrument, but as a display, it’s a little small. If you have the space and the money, we’d recommend going for one of the larger options, so you don’t have to keep zooming in and out all the time.

LAB TEST

SAMSUNG DV300F HOW many times has it happened? You’ve stood next to a friend, arm outstretched, desperately trying to hold the camera steady and point the lens towards you as you attempt to take a shot of yourselves, only to turn the camera round after the flash to find that you have a lovely picture of the tops of your heads? Well, fear not… In a seemingly endless parade of new digicams, the Samsung Dual View line differentiates itself by boasting two displays - as well as the normal 3-inch LCD screen, there’s a front-facing 1.5-inch screen, allowing you to see the picture you’re about to take when you have the camera pointed at yourself. This isn’t their first Dual View camera, but it is by far their best. For starters, it boasts a resolution of an impressive 16MP, which is big for any happy snapper. However, in addition, it offers a 25mm wide angle lens, which is good for ANY camera, SLR or otherwise, as well as 5x optical zoom. As far as software goes, there is the usual range of shoot settings, but there are also some photo templates and on-board image manipulation functions, so that you can edit the images directly on the camera. The reason for this is thus; the DV300F has in-built Wi-Fi, so that you can upload pictures directly to Picasa, Facebook and YouTube

(for videos) straight from the camera, without having to transfer them to a computer first. However, when you do want to back up images on a computer or Samsung smartphone, the Wi-Fi comes in handy again, as you can transfer them without messing around with cables (which often get lost!). There are even kids games using both the front and rear screens in “Children Mode” to keep the little one’s busy on car journeys, which is a nice feature. Another cool feature is motion photo, where you can add action to sections of still shots. This is demonstrated by a YouTube user called Shuffelle doing the ‘Melbourne Shuffle’ on still shots of busy streets in a rather cool example of the technology! Overall, the sheer list of features on the Samsung DV300F makeS it one of the most impressive digicams out there today. It takes serious steps towards closing the gap between digital cameras and smartphones, which are rapidly taking over as the casual snapper’s camera of choice these days, largely because of the Wi-Fi option.

ALI DRIVER SAYS THAT

“These days, the Germans could actually learn a thing or two from the Japanese when it comes to the premium auto segment…” Our Mystery Motoring Expert, Ali Driver, couldn’t find a fault with the Infiniti FX35. And trust us, he looked!

I

t’s no news to me that Infinitis are good. I’ve had a go in the G35 Sedan, and I’ve had a go in the previous generation of the FX35, and in both instances, I was truly impressed. It wasn’t a case of “This is good for a Japanese car.” It was a case of “This is good for any premium car, full stop.” However, with this, the secondgeneration FX35, it was a case of, “Come on, there must be SOMETHING wrong with it!” However, in six hours of driving, I failed to find out what that is. The FX achieves something that only the very best auto manufacturers can manage, which is a combination of both excellent road handling and supreme ride comfort that is truly remarkable considering this is a mid-size CUV and quite a large vehicle. The FX35 features Infiniti’s 3.5l V6, which boast an output of 307

hp (229 kW), mated to their new 7-speed automatic transmission, which delivers the car’s ample power range smoothly. Also available is the 3.7l V6, on the FX37, and the 5.0l V8 on the FX50, but in reality, the 3.5l V6 is as much power as most of us would ever need, with impressive acceleration even at higher speeds. In addition, the FX corners with a poise and finesse that belies its size, feeling firm and planted on the road and always in control. At the same time, the ride is smooth and refined, soaking up the many cracks and potholes on the mean streets of Doha like a cloud. However, the ride comfort is not the only reason the interior of the FX is a very nice place to be. Stylish, cosy, comfortable and elegant, lashings of padded leather give the FX a truly premium feel, and an incredible range of features as standard make it a very attractive choice.

It’s not very often that you’ll find a car that ticks ALL the boxes the way the FX35 does.

36

For example, it boasts an 11-speaker, 300 watt Bose stereo with in-dash 6 CD changer and 2GB hard drive, steering wheel mounted audio controls, 10-way power driver seat and 8-way power passenger seat, individual driver memory system (which incorporates the drivers seat, side mirrors, and steering wheel positions for two separate key fobs, so whether you or your partner use your key, the car will adjust to fit you), UV reflective glass, and Infiniti’s Intelligent Key system with Push Button start, which allows you to enter and start the car without taking your keys out of your pocket. The top-spec Premium Package model we drove adds the AllAround View Monitor park assist camera, which is a class leader – I haven’t seen this on any other car, premium or otherwise, so far! It also has a power adjustable steering-wheel, iPod integration system, folding outdoor mirrors, aluminium paddle shifters to adjust the gears when using the manual shift mode, electronic liftgate closure assist, automatic dimming rear-view mirror with compass,

glass moonroof, integrated rear spoiler, dual chrome exhaust tips, and finally, heated and cooled front seats. These are a godsend in the summer, when that leather gets really hot – there’s nothing quite like the feeling of the air cooling your nether regions on a blisteringly hot day, and it stops you leaving the car with unsightly sweat patches on your back. There’s also an added bonus with the fun you can have with front passengers. Quietly reach over and switch their seat to full heat when they’re staring out of their window, and see how long it takes them to notice! FACT’s Regional Sales Manager Laura Alvarez squirmed for a good fifteen minutes before asking why the hell her trousers were steaming… We haven’t even listed ALL the features on the FX35 here, but you’ll agree that what is listed is impressive in itself. The FX truly defines the luxury segment, and we can’t help but feel that the other brands are playing catch up in this regard. We’re not saying that its German rivals don’t offer any of these features – they most certainly do (with the exception of perhaps the All Around View Monitor) – but what we are saying is that you will have to pay quite a bit more for the high-spec model with ALL of these features included! It’s not very often that you’ll find a car that ticks ALL the boxes the way the FX35 does.

Who is Ali Driver?

1. He lives in Qatar and says he grew up hard on the mean streets of Doha, but we think he’s actually from a rich family with lots of cars, and won’t admit it! 2. He says his car skills are all self-taught, but we’re sure we’ve seen a course certificate from the Losail International Circuit on his wall. 3. He drives cars better than anyone we know (but don’t ever tell him). 4. He claims to be able to change a regular car tyre in under 4 minutes, but we’re sure that’s only when his wife helps him. LEISURE

THIS month we visit The Saffron Lounge at Katara, a restaurant by internationally renowned Indian Chef Vineet Bhatia. To give you some idea of the talent behind the creation of the restaurant’s menu, Chef Vineet was Europe’s first chef of Indian cuisine to be awarded a Michelin star. When he struck out on his own, opening his restaurant Rasoi in the posh London borough of Chelsea, he earned himself yet another Michelin star. Rasoi is now one of the hardest restaurants to get into in the city, with celebrities and London’s elite all clamouring for a table. The Saffron Lounge, unfortunately, will not enjoy such prestige, not being located in a fashionable area of central London. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a visit, not least because you’re always guaranteed a table! The venue is a cosy and elegant affair in a subtle Indian style with extremely comfortable seating (which you’ll be glad of after generous helpings of their delicious curries). The menu itself is heavily based on classic Indian dishes that we all know and love, but with an individual twist that sets it apart from your standard Indian fare. To whet our appetites, our waiter brought us the Dakshini Tomato Shorba, which is a small cup of delicate tomato soup tempered with mustard seeds and fresh coriander, and laced with coconut milk. If you like tomato soup, and you’re a fan of curry, then

48

you’ll love this soup – it’s like a classic tomato soup, but with very subtle Indian flavours giving it a unique zest. Then, for a starter, we were each brought a Saffron Kebab platter, an excellent dish for those who like to sample a lot of different things in one meal. On the platter, you’re presented with Murgh Hajari (chargrilled chicken pieces marinated in cream cheese, cashew nuts and black pepper), Crispy Cheese Chaat (tangy feta cheese wrap with vegetables and tamarind chutney), Achari Seekh Kebab (minced lamb kebab with spices) and Zafrani Jhinga (king prawns roasted with saffron and chilli), all of which were delicious bite-sized portions. This was served with the most delicious Malai Naan we’ve ever had. Infused with warm, melted Mozzarella and Cheddar cheese, it took the concept of cheese naan to a whole new level! Then came the curries… To start with, there was the Gosht Gucchi Korma, an incredible mild lamb curry with a difference – it is laced with truffle oil to create a flavour that really stands out from anything you’ve had before, and we can’t recommend it highly enough! Then came the Murgh Makhani, a particular favourite of ours. We are always going to be harsh judges of the good old butter chicken, but we needn’t have worried – it was excellent. And then there was the Nariyal Jhinga, which is prawns poached in

a coconut and chilli masala, a more fiery dish which is a must for seafood lovers, and the Dal Maharani (at this point we seriously thought they were trying to kill us!), a delicate lentil dish perfect for vegetarians. Accompanying it all was a vegetable biriyani and selection of delicious hot naans. Needless to say, we didn’t manage to finish it all, although we did give it a damn good try. This was, perhaps, a bad idea considering it was lunchtime – not a productive afternoon at all! The only thing missing through it all was a nice cold bottle of a certain amber beverage named after a certain regal bird of the fishing variety…

Food aficionados will be over the moon to hear about all the delicious treats the Ritz-Carlton Doha has on this month… FIRST up is La Mer, and an invitation to see the return of international guest chef Jeremy Steele on June 11. In an event called the Chef ’s Table, very much like our own feature, spectators will be able to watch the preparation of a four-course down-under themed dinner before their eyes. The dining experience includes commentary on each dish, explaining food pairing concepts and themes, and addressing queries from the guests throughout the event. Each guest will all receive a recipe book at the end of the evening. This event marks Jeremy’s second visit to The Ritz-Carlton Doha following his previous successful trip during the 2011 Festival of the Senses. Tickets are QAR450. Dimitris Fatisis This month, we dine at the table of Chef Dimitris, head chef at the Sharq Village and Spa’s Al Dana restaurant, where he introduces us to things we had never even heard of before!

T

he sign of a talented chef is one who experiments and innovates with the food he creates, and Chef Dimitris is a true example of just such a chef. Having been at the Al Dana restaurant for just over a month now, Dimitris is overseeing the creation of the restaurant’s new menu, and he relished the chance to test out a few of his ideas on us! Dimitri’s cooking is heavily inspired by Mediterranean cooking – most notably by Greek and Spanish cuisine. After completing his education as a certified chef in Kerkira, Greece, Dimitiris began to indulge in a passion for Spanish cooking by joining the Tapas Bar, a popular restaurant in Thessaloniki. From there, he went on to work in the Spanish restaurant of the Hyatt Regency Casino in Thessaloniki, before taking a post in the Hyatt La Manga in Spain as Chef de Partie, where he actually learned Spanish! “I loved Spain,” recalls Dimitris. “There were so many classes in Spanish cooking to do, and I did a lot of studying, and was able to grow my experience.” This isn’t to say his cooking is limited to Spanish cuisine in any way – over the course of our experience we saw influences from Italy, Greece, France, and even a little Japanese with a Wasabi dressing featuring in there somewhere! The first dish to come out was

50

the first time in the evening we were surprised. This is because it featured lobster ravioli that was not made using pasta, but instead with… wait for it… mango! This is a totally novel concept of which we had never heard the like, and we were dying to try it out. It was presented with a Wasabi yogurt dressing (again, something very novel) and green caviar. The ravioli itself is delicious. You expect the mango flavour to be very strong, but in fact it’s very subtle, providing a slightly sweet taste to the delicious lobster inside. The Wasabi yogurt dressing is also much nicer than it sounds, as you get mainly the yogurt flavour, but with the Wasabi just providing a slight tang to the taste. And the green caviar? “Just for the colour, really,” says Dimitris. “It’s not real caviar, but flying fish roe which is normally orange but dyed green here.” It seems that different coloured roe is becoming popular for decorating dishes, especially for sushi. Next came grilled octopus on a fennel purée, with baby fennel, lemon confit and a dressing made of soy sauce, olive oil, chili pepper and rice vinegar. This, says Chef Dimitris, is a very traditional Mediterranean dish with the twist of the smoky flavour on the octopus. The smoky flavour works very well, and despite the octopus coming in large chunks, it’s still very

FACT QATAR JUNE

june Issue qatar.indd 50

31/05/2012 16:39

succulent and tender, largely due to the preparation prior to grilling it. The fennel purée base was nice too, but the sauce really topped things off well, complementing the smoky flavour of the squid perfectly. Following this, a quick passionfruit sorbet to cleanse the palette, which was a delicious sorbet with a delicate flavour that’s not very tangy like sorbets can often be. Then came the hammour plaki, which is a fish dish cooked in tomato, garlic, onion and olive oil, but this time cooked in a papillote technique, where it’s sealed in an oven-proof paper parcel to seal in the flavours. When the dish is brought to the table, the bag is opened in front of you, and all the delicious aromas erupt out of the bag, making your mouth water. And because of the way it’s cooked, the fish is incredibly tender and juicy, and one of the finest hammour dishes we’ve ever had! And finally, we were treated to a red snapper confit on a leek purée with baked garlic and yogurt foam, a delicious dish where the fish is marinated in the flavours for a long

time before being cooked. The desserts were appreciated too, with a melon soup and semolina pudding, and caramelized pineapple with coconut ice cream, although we had little room for them! However, a subsequent discussion about ice cream led to the biggest surprise of the evening. “I remember seeing once Heston Blumenthal (famous English chef and owner of the Michelin starred Fat Duck gastro pub) make a fried egg ice cream in front of his guests!” recalls Dimitris. “This gave me ideas for ice cream flavours that I could try to make. I once tried to make a bacon and friend potato ice cream!” Bacon and friend potato? Really? “Yes, you can infuse ice cream with practically any flavour,” explains Dimitris. “I make a popcorn flavoured ice cream here. You just soak popcorn in milk for a while, and then use the milk to make the ice cream.” We had to try it! And lo and behold, Dimitris produced the ice cream, which did, indeed, taste distinctly of popcorn! As we said, Chef Dimitris is a true innovator who is full of surprises. FACT QATAR JUNE

FINAL WORD

What’s your

QATAR

IQ

S.A.T’s? M.B.A’s? Pah! In Qatar, only one test score really matters: your Qatar IQ!

Many venues around Doha are throwing their last parties this month before a summer hiatus until September. Do you:

a attend each and every party, racking up thousands of riyals in bar bills, because they all close for a

month in July anyway? carry on as usual, as you’re not a big party animal anyway? ignore them all completely, because you’re going to Ibiza for a month this summer, and nothing else even comes close?

b c

The UEFA European Football Championship 2012 kick this month. Are you:

a deliriously excited – you live for football, and the Euro 2012 provides a nice distraction in the four-year

wait for the World Cup? totally indifferent – you think football is a sport played by overpaid primadonnas with more diving than a scuba convention? football? You talkin’ ‘bout soccer?

b c

It’s Father’s Day this month. Do you:

a treat your ‘old man’ to a great day out with lots of pressies to show your appreciation for all the things

he’s done? wait until the last minute, and in a panic randomly choose something from our father’s day guide and rush out and buy it? wait expectantly to be showered with gifts, because YOU’RE the dad now, and after all the bloody birthdays and Christmases and ferrying round of hyperactive kids, it’s about time YOU got some presents, and if you don’t somebody won’t be borrowing the car this weekend…?
