ello, my dear friends! We meet again! After a very happening Ramadan, I stepped out for a quick break to Azerbaijan over Eid – how was your break? The views of Gabala and the busy streets of Baku had me freshen up real quick. I fell in love with the café culture in Azerbaijan and absolutely loved the food there. That was more than enough of what I needed to recharge and come back to Doha, ready to take on a new month and a new issue of FACT. I hope you all had time to recuperate too, because summer is looking like a whole lotta hot stuff to handle! With the annual summer festival kicking off and activations all over town, it’s been hard to avoid getting caught up in the festivities. Some good old Doha food has been keeping me on track but this month it was my journey that started at the Diplomatic Club which had me in good spirits. Here, I got a dose of their new wellness package, a daycation experience that ticks all the boxes (p79). It was only natural for me to head over to Banana Island soon after a lovely staycation there to soothe my tired muscles and treat myself to some delish Arabic cuisine (p71). As for the weekends, we’ve been partying it up at STK’s new brunch and it’s definitely worth shouting about (p67), and on a different night we enjoyed good old views of the sea as we dined at La Mar (p63). That and a lot more is wrapped up into this issue which celebrates our love of wanderlust with destination picks in Doha and beyond (p19). I just want to ask you one last thing: what are your Netflix recommendations to keep me busy during the summer months? I’m waiting to hear from you all and see you munching around town soon!☺

DARK TOURISM It takes one historical event or Netflix Original Series to trigger a traveller’s curiosity. And though dark tourism isn’t something new, it’s definitely on the rise as many jetsetters cash in on more meaningful places to visit. Here are just three to inspire your next trip…
CHERNOBYL Your interests don’t have to be morbid for this one but visiting the abandoned site of Chernobyl is like entering a haunting past and immersing yourself in history. Over a long weekend, explore the ghost town of Pripyat with its eerie and unsettling deserted playground, the Red Forest, and the New Safe Confinement structure around Reactor 4, which exploded back in 1986. You can even meet the few self-settlers still alive today who live inside the Exclusion Zone. To top that off, most pre-booked tours or packages will include a stay in Kiev, and a visit to the Chernobyl Museum for more indepth stories about the disaster. The site has been reclaimed by nature and is a fascinating trip for an insight into what happens when dangerous environments are created by an accident. Fly to: Kiev with Qatar Airways direct from Doha.
DMZ BORDER If you desire to get a sneak peek into one of the most closed countries (North Korea) in the world, a visit to the DMZ is a must. Seoul, South Korea is the closet major city to the DMZ which can only be visited on an organised tour with a mandatory military escort. Be sure to pick a tour with good points of interest including; the Joint Security Area, which is where you have the chance to physically stand in North Korea itself and shop original North Korean items from the gift shop; then there’s the Mt Odu Observatory from where you can safely view day-to-day life in North Korea through free, ultra-zoomed binoculars; as well as the Infiltration Tunnels built in the 1980’s; and, lastly, Freedom Bridge which connects the two sides and could be used if ever they were to be at peace. At most, the DMZ is a place where you’ll gain more of an insight into a humanitarian crisis that the world does not know enough about. Fly to: Seoul, South Korea with Qatar Airways direct from Doha. 20

RWANDA The small landlocked country of Rwanda is where the most recent and most brutal large-scale genocides took place in 1994. When it comes to Dark Tourism, the country’s many memorial sites are indeed one to shock and awe visitors. The Gisozi Genocide Memorial Centre is the best known and most visited individual site for tourists to see, located near the centre of the capital Kigali, which also offers a few more sites of its own that are worth exploring. However, it is in Murambi where the reality of these atrocious tragedies come to life. A “display of the dead” shows possibly the darkest, starkest, grimmest, and most shocking side of humanity in that at Murambi whole bodies are on display, half-decomposed, half- mummified by lime, which turned the bodies white. The experience is gutwrenching and not for the faint-hearted. But, more importantly, it also serves to prevent genocide denial and acts as a memorial to the hundreds of thousands who were slaughtered. Fly to: Kigali with Qatar Airways direct from Doha.

LESSER-KNOWN EUROPE We’ve become more and more demanding about finding the next hidden gem and avoiding crowded tourist hotspots. Luckily, Europe has plenty to see that isn’t yet on every traveller’s radar. Check out these worthwhile destinations… opulent opera house and a treasured 18th-century mosque, Albania has diverse appeal for those looking to infiltrate the soul of a city. Fly to: Tirana with Pegasus Airlines from Doha via Istanbul.
BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA Perhaps one of the most underrated cities in Eastern Europe, but also one of the most beautiful. Any city with an Old Town gets our attention, and Bratislava’s is really something to brag about. Quaint cafes line its many streets, and this is also one of the best places to experience the warm hospitality of the local people. Of course, there are many famous points of interest like the UFO bridge and the eponymous castle on the hill, the Blue Church or a day trip to Devin, just outside the city – you could easily spend a week or so here. For efficiency and cost-saving, get yourself the Bratislava City Card, which at around €20 for a three days will get you access to all public transportation, lots of free museums, discounts at restaurants and shops, and so much more. Bratislava is also relatively cheap in comparison to its European counterparts with decent AirBnB stays near the castle starting from roughly €20 a night – bonus! With a low budget requirement and so much to see and do – Slovakia’s enchanting capital will charm you in a more humbling manner. Fly to: Bratislava with Pegasus Airlines from Doha via Istanbul.
TIRANA, ALBANIA
MINSK, BELARUS We can hear some of you saying “huh, where?” – but, pay attention! Belarus is a landlocked European gem with elaborate palaces and cheap accommodation. Bordering Russia to the east and Poland to the west, the country is a great link between Asia and Europe, though one of the least visited. Yes, it’s a lot of concrete dotted with some green, but the history of this country runs deep. Some of the places to get up close and personal to Belarus’ past in Minsk include the Belarusian Great Patriotic War Museum, Independence Square – one of Europe’s largest and where you’ll find The Supreme Soviet of Belarus, the Church of St. Simon and St. Helen and Minsk City Hall – and Victory Sqaure, where military parades take place and also where newly married couples pose for their wedding photos. For a day trip, you can head over to Mir Castle or Nesvizh Palace. This UNESCO heritage sites are perfect to dive deeper into Belarus’ history and culture. Fly to: Minsk with Qatar Airways and Belavia fro Doha via Prague.
While still often chaotic, Tirana is an incredibly interesting and pleasant city to visit. Decades of Stalinist rule left Tirana grey and grim, lacking in both infrastructure and services, but after the collapse of communism in 1992, things have changed dramatically. Being Albania’s cultural, entertainment and political centre, Tirana has a unique, beguiling buzz that sees the locals be very welcoming and friendly towards foreign visitors – having been isolated from the rest of the world for the latter half of the 20th century, many are curious about the inflow of travelers. There are museums, monuments, and plenty of parks, but there are also rainbow painted housing estates that add brightness to a once monochrome cityscape. Day trips to the seaside, countryside walks in Mount Dajti National Park, an fact magazine

CURATED EXPERIENCES Putting comfort and happiness over materialistic opportunities, more of us value experiences in our chosen destinations than doing the same things we do every day at home. Ditching nights in the club for early morning hikes and fancy restaurant dinners for locally-owned street food, here’s where to get your soul fix…
WORK ON WELLNESS
CULTURE VULTURE
With hotels and resorts the world over implementing more and more wellbeing and fitness into their hospitality offerings, now’s the best time to curate your ideal wellness programme and jet off for mind, body and soul rejuvenation. Whether that’s a laid-back three-day detox at the gorgeous Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara where all your vegan, nutritious meals are prepared alongside light exercise and spa treatments, or a FUEL Weekend at one of the region’s top W Hotels where everything from Barry’s Bootcamp to boxing, spinning and more take place. Faraway retreats in places like Spain, Azerbaijan and Thailand can all cater to every need: from the very extreme 800-caloriea-day itineraries to the more mindful and zen journeys for mental and emotional health, 2019 is the time of wellness travel and if you haven’t already, it’s your turn to get in on it!
This one is relatively simple. You pick a destination based on its ability to offer you the most intense and meaningful holiday experience. By this we mean a complete culture shock, changing your everyday surroundings from Gulf comforts to a completely different way of life. Destinations such as India or China come to mind, where you’re guaranteed a wholly traditional outlook into the way the native people live. If you want to start off somewhere that’s not too unfamiliar but still gives you a chance to delve deep into a new society, head to one of Morocco’s most enthralling cities: Fez. An imperial city, within its sturdy walls you’ll find the place where old Morocco still exists – in the elaborate architecture, the historic medina and the masses that have made Fez their home. Watch the daily procession of mourners entering the tomb of Fez’s founder Moulay Idriss II; it’s easy to understand why Fez is called the spiritual heart of Morocco.
LIVE LIKE A LOCAL Whether you’re looking for cultural immersion or simply to catch a glimpse of local life away from the tourist trail, there are a host of ways you can dig beneath the surface and learn about your host country through first hand experience. One of the most popular and simplest ways of doing this now is through one of the many volunteer programmes out there – pick one, sign up, and start paying your dues whilst plunging straight into the deep end of local life. We’d highly recommend checking out Love Volunteers (www.lovevolunteers.org) for affordable and life-changing experiences ranging from conservation in the Galapagos Islands to community development in Rwanda and teaching in the West Bank. Moreover, living like a local could also mean signing up to learn a new language whilst abroad, taking a pilgrimage around prominent sites, or opting for a farm stay in rural villages – it’s your itinerary, and there’s so much choose from. 22

SOLO TRAVEL A hot topic in the travel industry, travelling alone has a lot of appeal. You get to step out of your own comfort zone, throw itineraries and plans out the window, do things at your own pace and enjoy some real me-time. Thankfully, there are plenty of destinations and types of holidays made to cater for just this… TAKE A HIKE If adventure is your thing, then get ready for Kyrgyzstan. It’s vast and stunning landscape is drawing more and more trekkers to tackle high elevation peaks and alpine lakes in the heart of the Tian Shan “Heavenly” mountains. Kyrgyzstan reigns as a peaceful haven in the midst of Asia. Besides a few large cities, Kyrgyzstan is just wild expanses of nature speckled with small villages and random nomadic yurt camps tending to herds of horses, sheep, and yaks. The saying “back to basics” comes to mind as a trek in Kyrgyzstan might just be the reminder you need about living a less is more lifestyle. Untouched by glitzy buildings, this is where nature takes centre stage. Hike around the 10,000ft-high Lake Song Kul or the country’s gorgeous snowcapped mountains, raging waterfalls, and immense glaciers Of Sokuluk and Ala-Archa Gorges, and how about the walking tour of Arslanbob, a small town in the province of Jalal-Abad with a naturally growing walnut forest. The surroundings are yours to explore!
picturesque bays. Along the way, explore the ancient temples of Angkor and cruise between floating fishing villages on Lake Tonle Sap – the choice is all YOURS.
EAT YOUR WAY AROUND There’s no better way to really take in travel than through the food of a nation. And if your palate permits, a self-prescribed foodie holiday might just be what the doctor ordered. We’re talking from the northern Italian Dolomites where Casunziei (ravioli stuffed with pumpkin or spinach) is a staple, through to Bologna’s famous Tortellino, Florence’s Ribollita (classic Florentine cabbage-andbean soup with old Tuscan bread), all the way through Rome where Carbonara reigns supreme, down to the renowned Neopolitan Pizza and finishing in Palermo’s pretty markets where street food like arancini (rice balls stuffed with meat sauce and cheese) and panelle (chick pea fritters) all make an appearance. If the task of eating your way through an entire country is too daunting, fear not, we’d highly recommend some of the world’s most thriving cities like Tokyo, New York, Mumbai or London, too.
ANCIENT DISCOVERY One of the most peaceful and intuitive solo trips to take in Asia has to be through Southern Indochina. We’re talking Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam. Not only is Asia one big bustle of cultures and lifestyle, it will also throw you out of your comfort zone whilst providing the opportunity to experience some of the most mindful communities, cultural sites and insanely-good food. Wherever you can, get around using local transport, especially as South East Asia has some of the craziest variety to offer – from tuk tuks to mopeds. Check out the vibrant Thai capital of Bangkok with its many night markets, cross over to Phnom Penh in Cambodia and take a sunset bike ride around the serene landscapes, then continue to Vietnam with its many one-of-a-kind cities and fact magazine

RIGHT WOW! WHEN ONE SPEAKS OF THE EPITOME OF LUXURY IN DOHA, THERE IS ONE PLACE THAT WILL ALWAYS BE PROMINENT: W DOHA HOTELS & RESIDENCES. ONE OF THE LUXURY LIFESTYLE HOTELS THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN HYPED ABOUT, A STAYCATION AT W DOHA HAD ANUSHAY TAIMUR KHAN’S NAME WRITTEN ALL OVER IT.
T
he iconic hanging blue lanterns of W Doha, that serve as the hotel’s trademark, have always been my favourite. From the majestic décor of the lobby to the welcoming sofa themes, it’s a treat to walk into this hotel at any given hour of the day! The comfortable feeling of having a luxury home sets right in when you’re here to spend a night. I was received at the reception and checked-in within minutes (who doesn’t like some a swift check-in?) and then, the real journey began. THE WOW SUITE For the weekend, I was the glorious Queen of the Wow Suite. With a lounge big enough to have a party, I was absolutely thrilled at the jackpot that I had hit with this place. I had my very own study table (where I’m actually typing this!) with the most magnificent view of the sea – a treat to actually work from here. The lounge had a hanging cane swing chair facing towards the view and I do not remember being at peace this way, while I read a book, for such a long time; a picturesque moment I believe all of us book worms dream about. The living room was decorated with a fringe ceiling canopy, giving it a very lavish look to the interior of the suite. The floor-to-ceiling windows, the amenities, every little thing counts. The bedroom is nothing short of regal with a touch of modernity. Honestly, it is like one walked into a movie where you were headlining the best show ever. W Doha, for me, takes the award home due to their attention to detail. From the little things from a nail kit to the essentials like a hairbrush, I found everything ready for me, with the cheekiest packaging that I loved, right in this suite. Even though the location of the hotel is prime and right in the middle of West Bay, I never felt the need to run out and grab the necessities for the stay. All in all, my suite was a sweet little package from a match made in staycation heaven! ‘WOW’ is indeed the appropriate word for this masterpiece. THE RESIDENCES As I was taking a tour of the hotel, I absolutely loved the different options they have for their Residences at the hotel. The choices of property vary from ‘Witty’, ‘Warm’ and 28

‘Wonderful’, further embodying the cheeky concept that W Doha is home too. This certainly looks like the ideal option for someone who is looking for exemplary luxury that W Doha Hotel & Residences are known for. DINING OPTIONS La Spiga Paper Moon, Market, Spice Market, WeTox, W Café – I don’t think there is a single name in this list which is not popular in the city. I enjoyed my breakfast at the Market, which displayed an array of delicacies and also had the option for A la carte. I devoured my eggs benedict right away and particularly wolfed down the pancakes that were served. The service was impeccable from the second I walked in and there is nothing else that sets you up for the day as an experience as good as this. For me, the prices of the Express Lunch at the restaurants blew me away. It is like having couture for a high street price! La Spiga Paper Moon and Spice market hosted me for their express lunch over the weekend. My experience at La Spiga was thoroughly joyful – not only is the manager the best conversationalist out there, but, I dined there twice on account of the food being THAT good! Their unique ‘lemony’ twist to Ravioli is something that I would recommend to everyone! In addition to that, I tried La Spiga’s express lunch and never knew that some splendid food could be bought at this price. The fact that their menu keeps rotating makes it all the better. Whether it is the refreshing Millefoglie alle fragole e crema Chantilly in this hot weather or the chicken skewers & Japanese cheesecake from Spice Market, you cannot go wrong with your food at W Doha. Attentive staff, quick service and immediate refills of your drinks; it’s an experience that you must try!

treatments that they have introduced. From the slimming packages to treatments that are catered specifically for your skin type, the shellac manicures to the hot massage, the Bliss Spa is aptly named: to give you a blissful time. I indulged myself with the Oxycryo Facial and I finally got to experience the worldly popular phrase ‘glow up!’. I was managed by Samia who talked me through what to expect during my upcoming one-hour session. The treatment started with Samia analyzing my skin and telling me about the points that needed to be looked after. We spoke of hydration, the elasticity of the skin and the type of treatment that would be suitable for me at that time. My exfoliating treatment included cleansing with milk, enzyme peel, a pore mask, and scaling through the Oxycryo machine. The machine basically blows cold oxygen on your face which encourages collagen regrowth. My skin came out glowing, smoother than ever and absolutely bacteria free. Since my skin needed hydration, Samia infused a selection of vitamins to balance my skin followed by another mask for brightening and nourishment. She used the oxygen mask to penetrate the skin which helps to boost collagen and cell renewal. The real-life glow up was so fantastic, you can imagine how I felt the rest of the day! My entire experience at W Doha was other-worldly. Living up to their reputation as a luxury boutique hotel, my weekend was a display of the magnificent qualities of W Doha. For me, this memorable stay had been compete due to attention to detail and their thoughtful rapport showcased at every level. The service is not just restricted to the restaurants here, I was welcomed back every time that I went out, kudos to the staff at the entrance of the hotel, and it really makes the guest feel like they truly belong. ovaniemi, the capital of the Finnish Lapland is an urban oasis amidst the Arctic wilderness, where culture, wild activities and fairy tales come together. Home to an eclectic – and unusual – array of museums. Some offer the opportunity to belt out a karaoke tune, others to shoot a digitised moose. Culture thrives in many mediums in the city; they even have their own chamber orchestra. The Arctic Circle runs through the southern end of Lapland; I journeyed along its axis, to the city of Rovaniemi with a population of 60,000, reindeer not included, making it the largest population hub near the Arctic Circle. It’s no wonder that Santa himself has chosen the city as the location of his post office. Beyond Mr. Claus and Rudolf, Rovaniemi contains several other noteworthy cultural treasures. Along the river and around the city are 70 lean-to shelters that can be freely used by those who want to roast sausages and marshmallows over an open fire or enjoy other outdoor snacks. Firewood is even state-provided. Yep, for real. The river landscape is dominated by Jätkänkynttilä Bridge; it’s an impressive sight, especially when illuminated at night. The route will be operated three times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Turkish Airlines will be the first airline to offer seats on business class to Rovaniemi. Flight tickets will be available soon. Turkish Airlines’ direct flight route from Istanbul to Rovaniemi, Finland, is now confirmed for the season 2019-2020. The first flight will depart from Istanbul on 5th December 2019. They will be the first airline to fly travellers to Rovaniemi in business class. This means new travel segments as luxury seeking travellers are expected to use the connection. The Finnish Lapland is filled with one “pinch-me-now-moment” after the next. I’m fact magazine

not talking about the kind of moments that linger in your mind for a while only to fade into a larger collection of travel experiences. No, I mean moments which combine surreal, grateful, and mind-blowing into never to be forgotten memories. Simply put, Finnish Lapland is an awesome place to discover. The flights will be available on both, travel companies and individual travellers. Turkish Airlines is the national flag carrier airline of Turkey and one of the biggest airlines in the world. With the connection, Rovaniemi will be connected to 122 countries and a total of 304 destinations. “Istanbul brings great opportunities to Rovaniemi. A total of 80 destinations can now be reached in three hours time from Istanbul.” says Sanna Kärkkäinen, CEO of Visit Rovaniemi. Being the Official Hometown of Santa Claus and a famous winter destination; truth is, global travellers come to Rovaniemi to experience its unique winter that comes with activities like reindeer sleigh rides, dog sledding, the chance to see the Northern lights and meeting with the city’s most famous character, Santa Claus! It is as close as reality gets to those who dream of a fantastic winter wonderland. Contrasts are a key factor in the allure of Lapland where 24-hour sunlight in the summer replaces the dark winter days. The hustle and bustle of towns and ski resorts is just minutes away from the peace and quiet of the wild wilderness. ✤

Doom Days
Africa Speaks By Santana
By Bastille
An album entrenched in the concept of urban nihilism; Bastille’s newest offering is worlds apart from their previous fulllengths. Displaying an array of characters and recurrent themes, the album offers a breathtaking mixture of emotion and energy. An opening scene-setter, Quarter Past Midnight is all about escapism and carries a very distinct sound. A further step away from their debut album, the track offers a more electronic vibe, while heavy use of guitar gives the single a rock feel. While the band is aiming to achieve a complete 180 on their politically aware predecessor, reality does seem to make its existence known every now and then. Joy featuring great vocals and an awesome production, talks about the little things that bring us joy when no one is looking. Far more uplifting and hopeful than most of their work, the British alt band has a winner on their hands. A vivid illustration of humanity, adventure and imagination, Bastille’s Doom Days has turned out to be a treat that was definitely more than worth the wait. The band is truly leveling up!
Half a century after everyone’s favourite Mexican American rockers mesmerised us with their interpretation of a song by a Nigerian percussionist, the band’s latest album is their very own love letter to Africa. Infused with African rhythms and a unique freedom that in inherent in all Santana songs, Africa Speaks manages to stay close to their roots while still venturing into uncharted territory. Featuring fiery guitar work by Carlos Santana, Breaking Down the Doors has an upbeat sound that distracts from its dark lyrics. Interspersed with Carlos playing guitar and Buika singing, it makes for a danceable tune. Unfolding more Jazz tunes and finding their way as they go, Yo Me Lo Merezco conjures up early band sounds and melodies. A tribute to Carlos’ overriding humility, the track features electric guitar chords that melt in and out. A unique infusion of rock, Latin and Jazz, it’s the raw inspiration that makes Africa Speaks compelling. Salute to good music!

A CULINARY MOSAIC When Mandarin Oriental, Doha recently opened its doors, the 5-star property brought with it a collection of dining experiences to rival the best food joints around the world. FACT takes a seat for lunch at the hotel’s extraordinary all-day dining restaurant, aptly called Mosaic, for one of the most consistently delicious and quality-filled meals we’ve had in a very long time…
T
here are few all-day dining restaurants in Doha that will inspire us to forgo our weekend lie-in and get excited for lunch. However, Mosaic at the stunning Mandarin Oriental Doha is definitely one of them. If you’re not acquainted with the latest opening in town, let us give you a quick intro. The beautiful Mandarin Oriental Doha is located in the centre of Msheireb Downtown and overlooking Barahat Msheireb town square, the newest landmark for the city and within walking distance to top attractions such as Souq Waqif and the Musuem of Islamic Art. Here, Middle Eastern charm meets Mandarin Oriental’s legendary hospitality, a philosophy that is also carried effortlessly into the food and beverage offered at the hotel. Walking into Mosaic is like coming to a charming family gathering; casual yet classy where the food and the surroundings are showcased in equal measure. Mosaic is where you go when you’re craving good food yet can’t decide exactly what your taste buds are gearing towards. Nine speciality open kitchens include Japanese Sushi and Sashimi, Arabic Grill, Asian Wok, Rotisserie, Tandoori Oven, Yakitori and Charcoal Grill, Traditional Bread Oven, Dessert and a refreshing Juice and Smoothie Counter. For an all-day dining, this place is really elevating a simple lunch experience to new heights. Dishes are designed for sampling and guests can expect a culinary journey inspired by the famed Silk Route. Located on one of the hotel’s top floors, views of Barahat Msheireb, Al Corniche and West Bay offer a mesmerising backdrop. In fact, as we sip on one of the tastiest and most refreshing virgin apple mojitos, we admire views of the iconic Souq Waqif. It’s so close yet it feels like you’re enjoying a truly exclusive moment, looking towards one of the city’s favoured landmarks. There’s something about the serenity in this and as we sip on our drink, we’re reminded that something as straightforward as a Juice Bar can really make all the difference at lunch. We commend the restaurant for coming up with the concept!

Another lovely surprise is the warm and welcoming staff. Usually, in a hotel of this magnitude, it can be hard to get genuine and heartfelt service, but at Mosaic it’s present from the second you arrive. It’s also fantastic to see that, clearly, the culinary team is made up of chefs who are expert in their cooking area and cuisine. For example, we learn that the Tandoori Oven is operated by a highly-skilled tandoori chef, whilst the sushi is prepared by the intricate hands of chefs who have done this extensively, and the Rotisserie where mouthwatering Peruvian chicken is cooked, works at the hands of an Argentinian chef who knows exactly what he’s doing! This approach to gastronomy in the hotel is a sincere and excellent one. Just one more reason to eat at Mosaic! Now, let’s get down to business. Food is the name of the game and Mosaic is here to play with all the best contenders from a vast epicurean landscape. To start with, a sampling tray of lush fact magazine

cold mezze whets our appetite for the main show. We’re talking tangy Muhammara, smoky Baba Ghanoush, creamy Hummous, and a few other classics. It’s the fluffy hot bread that seals the deal, reminding us of all the carby goodness we ate on a trip to Istanbul. Lo-and-behold, the chef advises us that there is a slight Turkish influence in the preparation of the bread which is sprinkled with sesame seeds and a total hit at the table. If we had to pick the station from which our favourite dishes came, it would hands down be the Japanese. We certainly were not expecting the high-quality ingredients and also the authentic cooking methods. The pan-fried option as well as the siu mai are real moments of “mmmh” whilst the California Roll is a single bite of perfection. You won’t be disappointed. Other notable dishes included the VERY scrumptious Heirloom Tomato and Truffle pide. The flavours are a marriage made in foodie dreams and as the cheese oozes off on the hot doughy 56

base, we want to scoop up every single piece to ourselves. The Robatayaki selection also treats our palate to beautiful flavours, especially the Atlantic Salmon coated in BBQ miso and chives – it’s an actual revelation and we’re lucky to have tried it! Furthermore, the assorted Tandoori Kebab with exquisite naan bread really steals the show. Having not had Seekh Kebab in a while, we dived in and pretty much inhaled the juicy meat, dipping it in an addictive coriander and mint chutney. SO. SO. GOOD! For people who are not really huge fans of chicken, we find ourselves picking away at the Peruvian-style Rotisserie chicken, sliced into manageable pieces, we actually can’t get enough and that’s definitely a testament to the delightful preparation. For dessert, the Pecan and Pistachio Brownie has us thanking our tummies for keeping just that little bit of extra room for us

to be able to satisfy our sweet tooth. Wonderfully moist and with a rich but not heavy dark chocolate taste, we also loved the Tahitian Vanilla ice cream which offset the combination of a classic dessert, flawlessly. Innovative approaches to dining like providing kids with their very own colourful cutlery, is something we adore about Mosaic and largely the Mandarin Oriental brand. Their attention to detail is above and beyond, something we also noticed in the presentation of the food but also the friendliness of the staff. Mosaic is one hundred per cent the one-stop shop for a diverse lunch of many quality cuisines. As long as the standards stay high, we’re sure that this is soon going to be an awardwinning venue in Doha. ✤

TEA-TIME TREASURES When it comes to indulging in a good afternoon tea, Doha is packed with beautiful choices. H
ow do you take your tea – green, black, sugar and milk? FACT’s recent visit to experience the High Tea at City Centre Rotana’s cosy Caramel Lobby Lounge was just what the foodie within us was crying out for. Afternoon tea has long been the tradition of ladies who lunch, brunch and spend leisurely days catching up with friends. It’s a tradition that has taken over the world and in Doha, especially; a good afternoon tea can be the high of someone’s week. So, entering Caramel Lobby Lounge is a reminder of what we love so much about the Rotana brand; it’s warm, inviting and, more importantly, accessible. The atmosphere is abuzz with businesspeople, small groups of friends, intimate meetings and it gives the general vibe of being relaxed and open to anyone who needs to take a breather and sip on a tasty liquid concoction or treat themselves to a quality light bite. Caramel Lobby Lounge is just the type of delectable gourmet coffee shop that you would expect from a 5-star hotel. It carries an effortless casual charm and offers up an assortment of espresso, coffee and tea selections, fresh bakery items and speciality sandwiches and salads. The culinary selection has something for every palate, including a “make your own quiche” menu which is a pleasant surprise. We’re here to work our way through three tiers of utter perfection that is The Caramel Special High Tea. What makes this afternoon tea experience stand out? With dedication to capturing the essence of a centuries-old tradition and making sure that it’s as tasty and classic as it is enticing and innovative, we’re faced with three sophisticated tiers to tackle. Turning things upside down, and being lovers of all things warm and delicious, we start off with the homemade scones and smother each half with a generous helping of clotted cream – the real deal – and yummy jam. There’s a light-hearted discussion about what goes on first – cream or jam? We’ll let you decide. Either way, every bite of the scones is exactly what we hoped for accompanied by a classic English breakfast tea, it’s like being back in a quaint London café. Once this is devoured, we really get going. Standout mini sandwiches include the Truffle hens’ egg on brown bread with lush, subtle flavours, and the Coronation chicken with green apple and slightly curried mayo on a brioche bun – this is the one you’ll want more of! A lovely selection of chef’s choice pastries is a hit too (chocolate cake, anyone?) Ready for the surprise? The Caramel Special High Tea is not your usual set up. Things get a little more 60

This is an incredibly unusual afternoon tea addition; however, it is a great reminder of how the Rotana team keeps their offerings exciting and unique. Plus, more mouthwatering food, we really can’t complain. The dishes remind us of all the best things about good comfort food! Ending on a high, this is when you’ll want to get your phone out and take some insta-worthy shots. A breathtaking presentation of Liquid nitrogen apple pie and vanilla Dilmah tea infused meringue and passion fruit sauce is a medley made of delectable dessert dreams. We can’t think of a better way to finish off a traditional meets modern afternoon tea experience, where quality ingredients and consistent presentation takes centre stage. he entire experience of a visit to La Mar by Gastón Acurio is sublime. Every aspect of the restaurant is deeply considered from the look and feel of the aesthetics to the menu they serve through to the highly trained staff who wait upon you. La Mar has restaurants in various cities but now Doha has added itself to that illustrious list. The site of the restaurant was built from scratch to a specification that Chef Gastón Acurio himself, the man behind La Mar, would approve of. We entered through a heavy wooden door into a bright and airy atrium where the maître-d welcomed and escorted us to a table. Diners have the choice of sitting inside or out and while neither is necessarily better than the other, the option to dine al fresco gets our vote especially because the temperature permitted when we visited. Their acoustic band further provided an additional atmospheric backdrop alongside the tranquil beach view. That won’t be possible in the peak of summer, but the floor-to-ceiling glass window frames let in plenty of light to the classy and modern dining room with high ceilings and minimalist décor to cater for the experience that is La Mar all year round. The great benefit of an outdoor table was the feeling of being ostensibly on the beach. The view is stunning with the calm waves calmly meeting the shore and the architectural majesty of the iconic skyline in the far distance. Peruvian cuisine is fast developing a niche chic in the food world but there is no other competitor for it in Qatar offering an exclusively Peruvian menu. The brunch we went to was an excellent way to explore much of what they have to offer as a chef’s set menu is presented with a kind of ‘greatest hits’ of the main a-la-carte menu sent out. We had a selection of appetisers and a couple of hot starters, a couple of entrees and a couple of desserts to share. The Nikkei Causa is incredibly fresh and tastes divine. It’s a tuna tartare with avocado mousse, nori seaweed, wasabi tobiko and ricotta cream. Another cold starter allows a palate gorge. Called cebiche mixto, it comprises the combination of the catch of the day with calamari, shrimp and octopus in ricotta leche de tigre. The back of the mouth is singing in flavour. Sensational seafood sushi rolls also add to the smorgasbord. Indeed, it is that sharing mentality that is the Latin American way and I rather liked the table brimming with a multitude of different things to dip in and try. My favourite appetiser awakened the palate from any slumber it had been in. The chalaco is such an excellent slider of sumptuousness; fresh catch of the day, shrimp in rocoto leche de tigre with crispy 64

calamari, choclo and sweet potatoes which reappear in numerous dishes across the menu. There are things at this brunch that are just not offered on the daily a-la-carte menu so we really ‘lucked out’ with this. The sushi is a brunch special and so are the miniature fish burger sliders and empanadas. Two mains are then placed on the table. The pollo which translates as chicken. On the dish are two anticuchera chicken thighs, sweet potatoes, buttered corn and chalaca. There is a bit of a kick to the chicken that

gives it some spice and heat. The other main dish on the table is the meat eaters’ dream. It’s called Carne which quite literally means meat. We’re talking anticuchera tenderloin with chimichurri potatoes, buttered corn, carretillero sauce and chalaca. Rather than two hefty desserts to work through at the end of the afternoon, two delicate pots are presented with light sweets to perfectly polish off the set menu. One was a lime cream, lime mousse, almond crumble with meringue and lime sorbet. In the other pot was a dulce de leche foam, vanilla ice cream, berries and crispy meringue. It was impossible to fault anything on the menu and the food was just so different to anything you can eat anywhere else in the city. The staff are exceptionally well trained and at a far higher level than most others in the five-star restaurant category. They are knowledgeable about the food they serve, attentive to customers and friendly too. La Mar proved to us exactly why it is a multi-award-winning venue. It’s a very special place to visit when you’re in search of something extra unique. ✤

I
’m just going to start by telling you all this: I absolutely love STK. The food, for me, is one of the best in town, the bread that they serve to welcome you is one of the best piece of carbs you’ll ever sink your teeth into, and the general environment is something that I absolutely relish too. I went to STK when it officially launched and could see how The Ritz-Carlton Doha was stepping up their game with this steakhouse. As part of their renovation of the entire hotel, STK’s launch came at the perfect time. I thoroughly enjoyed their food even the first time that I visited but found it to be a bit over the top for myself. As much as I initially loved the concept of a party restaurant, I found myself waiting for a more casual atmosphere to set in, where the conversation could flow easily. Well, all of that changed when I walked into the Party Brunch. As all good things take time to perfect, I believe that STK found its balance as well. The music made me dance my way to the table from the get-go, and I was surprised to see that there wasn’t your usual old buffet display at this particular party – well, that’s new! I enjoyed the fact that STK had merged its best items with breakfast options and we quickly ordered – there was an entire party that I had to be a part of after all. As the DJ kept the it popping with the latest chart hits, I couldn’t help delving into the dynamic views of the restaurant. Overlooking the beautiful sea and the Pearl, I absolutely loved the package I was getting; a 23rd level, summer lovin’ festivity! I opted for the spicy watermelon mocktail to get myself cooled down for the next few hours – something that came recommended by my server, Umaima. The minute I sipped it; I knew that this girl was going to help me plan my order. Leaving a spicy, welcoming, after-taste, this drink is made of summer dreams. I was very confused with how the food would complement the STK vibe and surprisingly, I loved the entire concept the minute I was served. The heart-winning morning tacos gave me scrambled eggs just the way I like them, which will always be my go-to item from this day on. Deliciously cheesy and the right way to my heart. The brisket benedict was an absolute delight to have; like I said, the best of both worlds! I got my dose of meat and my craving for my morning eggs right there. Something I need to commend for STK is the way they did their egg benedict. I’ve honestly never had my benedict spicy and I absolutely love this slight change. Their brisket was as juicy as it could get and the extra sauce is the perfect fit in this combo. The dessert was the cherry on top for me. Being the junk food/candy enthusiast that I am, STK gave me a dessert that was a culmination of all my sweet dreams: the junk chalice. Popcorn, caramel, browned, marshmallow, ice cream and this is definitely heaven on a plate. Presented in the most fascinating way with dry ice and nitrogen, the dessert certainly turned a few heads. You would think that once you finish the brunch, it’s time to get going. Well, STK has a completely different plan for you that includes a live saxophone player meeting the DJ head on and a magician to keep you entertained in-between orders. This party proved it again that STK is definitely not your average steakhouse – it’s here and making big boss moves. ✤ 68

I
t’s true. If you’ve been keeping up with my editorial journey, you’d know that the Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara has been my ideal getaway since the day I landed in the country, four years ago. This luxurious destination is my first choice whenever it comes to taking a quick break from the hustle of the city. The luxury starts from the moment you enter the port on the Corniche, and the people of the resort have certainly set standards really high. Naturally, as I got the opportunity to try their lunch, I honestly couldn’t think of how the chef would surprise me. Al Nahham is a favourite in my household, given our true love for Arabic cuisine, and I was almost sure about what I was going to order when I went. Thankfully, I met the chef on the way and requested him to make me something that came highly recommended from his end. This was most likely the smartest move on my behalf that day. I was welcomed with their special Al Jallap drink, which cooled the summer heat right off and chose to sit indoors, with mesmerising views of the Doha skyline for afar. Since the restaurant comes with the option of dining outdoors as well, I was not ready to face the Doha summer on this particular day. I got the best of both worlds as I took the table right next to the windows and found myself captivated by the beauty of this resort. My starters came in shortly and hence began one of the most pleasing surprise of my culinary expedition. Where I always stick to my trusted hummus and mutabbal, I kept coming back to my fried calamari with the lemon sauce and the salad this time around. It was so refreshing to eat the salad and set the right tone for this lunch, especially with the scorching heat, you just want to start light. I must add that the hummus did have a very nice, creamy flair, and I would still recommend you try it. I ordered a pina colada, complementing the sunny views, and waited for my main course. When I was presented by a beautifully decorated trolley with lamb chops on it, served with several other side dishes. The presentation gets full points with this dish because I really do believe that this adds to the excitement of the meal. Given the excellent service of this restaurant, I was served the lamb chops, and with absolutely zero expectations, I dug in. Personally, I always prefer chicken dishes, I wasn’t expecting the chops to be this good. My knife smoothly sliced into the meat, I took the first bite and experienced the juicy, tender lamb, bathed with the most delicious spices that harmonise with your taste buds. I ‘Oh-My-God’ with every single bite and couldn’t help going for another helping – no way was I going to regret not trying another piece of this! Even though I was offered rice and vegetables to go with this, I didn’t even consider mixing my palate with anything else; the chops deserved some one-on-one time. As for dessert, I was hoping to get some delicious Umm Ali that I love but, I was served with their Konafa Osmalieh and Ashta Bel Asal. This experience was all about the chef’s recommendations and that’s exactly what I went for. The
72

konafa was a bit different than the one I usually have; it had a good balance of syrup which made all the difference. I was trying the Ashta Bel Asal for the first time and savoured the distinctive taste of the fresh Lebanese cream used in it. Any eatery that can surprise me even after five visits comes highly recommended from my end. This fine dining restaurant is already famous for the luxury and views that it offers but the food will always steal the show here. Whether you’re dining under the stars, by the sea on their outdoor patio or if you choose to be in the comfort of the beautiful interiors, Al Nahham will always offer more than just exemplary food – and I’ll definitely be back. ✤

A SUMMER AFFAIR On returning from a quick break away from Doha, FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan headed to the Diplomatic Club for a much-needed daycation, discovering that it truly is the IT place-to-be!

I
’ve always associated the Diplomatic Club as the exclusive destination for many around Doha. A favourite of mine when it comes to dining on the beach, Al Sayyad already stole my heart months ago. Similarly, when I heard about the staycation deal, I just had to go and give it a try. Craig, our freelance writer, has already raved about their water activities so, naturally, I wanted to try wakeboarding first and foremost. On a sunny day, I got my sunscreen on and met with Mr. Pamitha, assistant manager of the recreation, who gave me a tour of the club. He escorted me to the seaside and I got geared up for my first-ever session. I’m slightly scared of the sea but Prem, my guide for the activity, made sure I was comfortable with the entire process, as he guided me on how to go about it. From the gear to the demonstration, I was offered complete comfort from the team. With Pamitha’s encouragement and Prem’s instructions, I managed to stand on the board on the first try – why, yes, I did fall within the first five seconds but, it was a success nonetheless! My tip for any water activities would be to get your own goggles especially if you’re a rookie like me. A couple of tries later, I decided to head towards the pool, which at this point was my safe haven, and got myself some chilled Coconut Hug to cool down after an adventurous session. The temperature of the pool was perfect for me; cool enough to make sunny Doha lovable! I relaxed by the pool as I mentally prepared myself to get into the gym. Honestly, I had expected to just go to the gym and use the machines but, I was surprised to meet my instructor there, who was more than ready to assess me 80

for the session. After talking about my fitness activity and my preference for the workout, Hussam, my instructor, chose to challenge me with some core-oriented exercises. Not only was the gym equipped with the finest technology, but Hussam also made sure that I was not pushing my body beyond its capability. I had already mentioned a few muscles that needed work on and he made sure that he demonstrated every exercise before he asked me to do them. I appreciated how he divided his time amongst his clients and never felt like I was not looked after. I may or may not have skipped an exercise or two but, the experience itself was an eye-opener. This comes as a highly recommended feature of the daycation, on my behalf! Soon after, I welcomed lunch by the pool graciously and dipped back into the water as they took my order at the poolside restaurant, Al Borj. I believe some days just call for a light snack and this restaurant offered various delicacies to make this the ideal way to have a little fun in the sun. The pool access is the perfect family option and I am already booked to come back here with my family. There’s nothing that is missing in this offer and it comes across as the all-in-one package with access to the best amenities in the market. I really don’t think a staycation is complete unless you get to experience some Spa time, and the Diplomatic Club did not disappoint. I was introduced to Ayu, my massage therapist, who straightaway started on my Aromatherapy treatment, and I was so comfortable at this point that I dozed off. The serene room, the light music, and Ayu’s feathery massage were exactly what I needed to relax after the adventurous activities of the day. The next hour was spent in bliss and I will be forever grateful for being introduced to this therapy at the club.
Since I had to run to an event straight after this perfect day, I quickly stepped into the Beauty Center for a quick makeover with Bernard. After a relaxed hair wash, he asked me how I wanted my hair styled. I described the nature of the event to him and told him the problems that I had to deal with my hair. My issue is usually that my hair falls flat after blow dries and Bernard made sure he was roping in a regular for the future. He took less than 45 minutes to give me one of the best blow-dries I’ve had in Qatar. My hair was bouncy, smooth and the volume lasted me for 2 days! Considering the weather change in Doha, I was so happy with the results because no humidity could change how my hair looked that day. And, I did look an extra bit posh that day – the hair really is the key ingredient here. After having a look at the services, I found this Salon to be a one-stop for self-care. Personally, I found this entire package as an opportunity I cannot think about missing. There is not a single service at the Diplomatic Club that is not mentioning worthy. The staff, the arrangement and the first-class service is all you need for the summer. I absolutely love the stunning views that come as an added beauty with this property, and contrary to popular belief, non-members can also avail these services – like I said; not to be missed! ✤
