QATAR:
THROUGH THE LENS AS THE WORLD STARTS TO OPEN UP AGAIN, WE THOUGHT IT ONLY FITTING TO SHINE A SPOTLIGHT ON QATAR AND ITS DEEP-ROOTED CULTURE AND HERITAGE. FACT REVISITS A PICTURE-PERFECT CONVERSATION WITH QATAR-BASED FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER MARIA OVSYANNIKOVA, WHO DISPLAYED HER CAPTIVATING IMAGES OF THE COUNTRY IN A SAINT PETERSBURG EXHIBITION NOT TOO LONG AGO. HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW…
O
riginally from Moscow, Maria has now been living in Qatar for seven years. She’s a self-taught photographer with a fascination for all things culture related. When I think about heritage sites in Qatar, it inspires me to imagine how they looked in the past when they were still populated,” Maria says. “I picture different scenes, like, for example, how men were leaving for long fishing trips or pearl diving trips, and how they are coming back. What would ladies do, what would kids or the elderly do - scenes from common life,” she adds. “And all that is what I want to show in my images, with an artistic touch.” Maria recalls how she always liked to take photos but kept it at hobby level. After she moved to Qatar, she suddenly discovered her true passion for creating images of local culture, landscapes and heritage. “I found beauty and inspiration here like nowhere else, so three years ago I left my office job and became a full-time photographer,” she says. When thinking about who or what to photograph here in Qatar, Maria’s thought process is different from image to image. “Sometimes, I pass by a place, I see how nice it looks in this particular moment, so I might just leave everything and literally run there to take the desired

shot,” she explains. “Or sometimes I can plan my shoots for weeks selecting locations, time, models, props and so on. Or again, I might wake up in the morning with an idea already – like today I HAVE to go and take shots in let’s say – Souq Wakif! It really does vary.” You’ll notice that much of Maria’s work really explores the vast landscapes, the skyline, cultural sites and people of Qatar. It’s no surprise then that her favourite places to shoot are both the desert and by the sea – which make for stunning landscapes in her photos of Qatar. She also states that she adores the heritage sites located mostly along the North coast of Qatar. “I spent a lot of time exploring that area and still go there sometimes, away from civilisation, just to have peace of mind,” Maria says. Showcasing Qatar in an equally history and heritage-rich country like Russia is no small feat, and Maria is thrilled about the upcoming exhibition. “The opportunity to show a glimpse of Qatari culture, landscapes and architecture to Russian people is so exciting,” she smiles. “Most of the selected images will be showcasing those themes.” Aside from the beautiful shots that Maria takes of her now home, Qatar, she also likes to use photography to raise awareness of more topical issues too. In the past, she has teamed up with Al Sadd SC football player Xavi Hernandez to create an image with Nawaal Akram, a Qatari comedian, model, athlete and disability rights campaigner, to bring for attention and open discussion on disability in Qatar. ✤
Do you remember what your first professional camera was and the first picture you took with it – share that memory with us… My first DSLR was a Canon 60 D and I clearly remember that image, which was kind of a starting point of my photographic journey in Qatar. It was the Doha Skyline with two dhows on the foreground just right after sunrise. How would you describe your photography style? I would say that it’s fine art photography. I am trying to make it as artistic as I can and to give it a message or a story. Tell us about some of the other tools and techniques you make use of in your photography… I don’t really have any specific tools or techniques, but I do not upload or publish the picture if I don’t feel it’s perfect. Is there anywhere in Qatar that you have yet to shoot – somewhere you really want to capture on camera? Qatar National Museum – it’s such a gem of architecture and design, and I would love to have some creative images of this building. What advice would you give to young budding photographers? Two things I would like to recommend is to keep taking pictures every day and look with your eyes, but see with your heart. ARTS AND CULTURE WE CATCH UP WITH THE QATAR BASED ARTIST AND DOLL MAKER.
I
f you’re an avid social media user and like to be in-the-know when it comes to arts and culture in Qatar, then you may have come across Jawaher Almaadheed on Instagram.
Tell us about your background and how you got into arts? I am a graduate from Qatar University and have loved drawing ever since I was a child. I love handicrafts and for me, art is a beautiful outlet, especially for the doll making industry. I have created art for several years and this is my love. I like to use different techniques and materials and like to work with small details. How did you get involved with doll making? Where does your inspiration come from? I love the doll industry because I love to buy and collect dolls and I am always thinking about how beautiful they are and how I can make something similar. From then on, I started making dolls. We love the antique collection - what themes do you pursue? I love European history, especially French, as I am impressed by the antiques and Victorian furniture. Therefore, I search for antique collections, read about them and buy them. I use it for my home furnishings as well as my doll inspiration. How have your techniques changed over time? I am trying to learn more as I have taken courses abroad. I would like to learn new techniques and continue to develop my talent. The task of making dolls as a professional is difficult because I require materials that I need to purchase from America and Russia. For a long time, I was facing difficulties in achieving professional results in doll making.
What is your dream project? My dream would be to participate in international exhibitions and to raise the name of myself and my country, Qatar on the world stage. Tell us about your most memorable piece? Every piece I make is important to me, but there is a doll that I made before I started the business that is very special to me. It is a clown doll and when I made her, it was not to sell or anything, but when I put her into a book fair, people rushed to it and encouraged me to make a lot more of them. How long does it take you to make one doll? Depending on the doll, it can take anything from three days to one week. What does this mean to you!? Is it a passion or hobby, or are you just experimenting? First, it is a passion and then a hobby but it is an experience that I don’t want to end,. So I am continuing to develop my skills. Chromatica
By Lady Gaga
Her past work already earned 11 Grammys and three nominations for “Album of the Year”. Now Lady Gaga’s sixth album returns to the dance floor and although we are currently living in a post-nightclub world, the fusion of electro dance-funk and pop is just perfect for kitchen-floor dance parties. Chromatica offers furious earworms like Alice, liberating bangers like Free Woman, and truly unexpected guest appearances like Elton John on Sine From Above. Speaking of guest appearances, album hit Rain on Me is a perfect example of a collaboration gone extremely right. Although already the incredible dance-disco production and uplifting songwriting make the song great, it’s the unmatched chemistry between Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga that makes it one of Gaga's best. In Chromatica, Lady Gaga not only embraces the dance pop that once made her a global superstar overnight, but twists it, splits it, and reforms it as something else entirely. With thrilling production throughout and some exceedingly personal songwriting, Chromatica is designed to leave the listener wanting more.

The production on Cold Water is some of the most stunning in Medhane's discography yet, and his rapping is louder, clearer and more purposeful than ever. An album that takes you into Medhane’s realm where you can’t help but listen to his stories.

LASHES SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS Four ways to incorporate makeup into your at-home daily routine with FC Beauty.
D
uring this time of social distancing, many of us are choosing to stay at home. However, it is still important to allocate some time for looking after ourselves, learning new skills and practising activities that will spark joy and guide us back to a healthy state of mind. While wearing makeup at home during the social distancing period may sound superficial, spending 15 minutes of your day to do your makeup is a great way to keep your mind away from your daily worries, as well as provide a fun and creative outlet for you to express yourself. Makeup has also been proven to be an effective mood-booster and can help build confidence and eliminate the feeling of insecurity. Whether you’re a beauty enthusiast or want something new in your life, here are four ways to incorporate makeup into your daily at-home routine, to enhance your natural beauty and lift your mood: 1. Develop your makeup skills If you’re one to break a nervous sweat when picking up a liquid eyeliner and always wanted to master that cat-eye look, now is the best time for you to hone your winged eyeliner skills, by watching online tutorials and figuring out the ideal way to draw a flick according to your eye shape. Also, investing in a high-quality eyeliner such as the FC Beauty Intense black eyeliner will make the process even easier, with its precise felt tip and smooth formula that glide on with ease. 2. Keep yourself looking refreshed Going makeup-free can feel incredibly liberating, but on days when you want to look more put-together for an urgent video call or need to step outside the house to pick up some daily essentials, then a product like the FC Beauty shimmer liquid eye shadow can serve as a quick-fix solution. The creamy liquid eye shadow instantly adheres to the lids and provides a brightening effect to the eyes and can stay for up to eight hours without smudging or creasing. You can also smudge a little bit of the FC Beauty ultra-glide eye pencil into your lash line to smoke up the look. 3. Get your creative mood on Whether you prefer neutral makeup looks or fancy experimenting with more vibrant shades, it might be worth

investing in an affordable and versatile eye shadow palette such as the FC Beauty 35A or 35D palettes, to spur your creativity and inspire you to create different looks every day. Also, just like painting on a canvas, playing with the different eye shadow colours is another therapeutic way to bring back the positivity in your life. 4- It’s all about the eyes While many of us are skipping foundations and concealers during social distancing, focusing on eye makeup will allow your skin to breathe, while still maintaining a polished and put-together appearance. The FC Beauty pencil eyeliner pencil comes in various shades that can be used for different purposes to enhance the shape of your eyes. For example, the shade chocolate and raven (dark brown and black) can be used to tight line and define the eyes, while the shade cotton (white) will eliminate any redness from the waterline, brighten the eyes and make you look more well-rested. ✤

SUMMER SURVIVAL TIPS •
POPSICLE PARTY Though you might be tempted, stop yourself from reaching for that super-cold tub of ice cream in the freezer. A healthy and more delicious alternative is fruit popsicles – they’re just as cooling and contain half the calories. TWO EASY & YUMMY POPSICLE RECIPES Virgin Piña Colada Pops (Serves 8) Ingredients: 1/2 large pineapple, chopped (about 4 cups), One 15-ounce can cream of coconut Three tablespoons fresh lime juice, Pinch fine salt Method: Puree the pineapple, cream of coconut, lime juice, and salt in a blender until smooth. Pour the mixture into ten 3-ounce or eight 4-ounce ice-pop moulds, dividing evenly. Insert ice-pop sticks and freeze until firm, at least four hours and up to four days.
Eat Small, Eat Often – The larger the meal, the more metabolic heat your body creates breaking down the food. Eat small portions but eat regularly! Hot Tips For Cooling Down l Run your wrists under a cold tap for five seconds each every couple of hours. A main vein passes through this area, and it helps cool the blood. l Wear lightweight, light-coloured cotton clothes. Light colours reflect the sun’s radiation and heat is trapped by synthetic fibres, but cotton absorbs perspiration and its evaporation causes you to feel cooler. l Replace your usual body moisturiser with a cooling aloe vera aftersun product to use morning and night. This will help lower your skin temperature. l While you’re out, keep the house blinds or curtains drawn to stop it heating up like a greenhouse. ✤
Banana Nutella Fudgesicles (Serves 10) Ingredients: Six large overripe bananas, peeled 1/2 cup Nutella Method: Blend the overripe bananas until completely pureed. Add Nutella, and blend until thoroughly mixed. Pour into popsicle moulds with sticks and freeze for three to four hours. What to Eat in the Heat? Fruit with Yoghurt – As the fruit has high water content, it will help maintain your body fluid, by making you sweat – this is the body’s method for cooling down in the heat. Yoghurts contain friendly bacteria which can help protect against food poisoning – something that is more of a frequent occurrence in hot temperatures. Rice, Baked Potato & Pasta Salad – Eat regular, small, starch carbohydrate snacks or enjoy a weekend roast with ample potatoes or a pasta dinner, and how about a yummy risotto? Why? Well, carb-rich foods keep the body’s blood sugar and energy levels even, helping to combat heat exhaustion. Onions – Really? Especially red ones! Red onions contain a chemical called quercetin which is believed to have an antihistamine effect. So for those people who suffer from irritants like heat rash or adverse reactions to insect bites and stings, eating onions daily could be the answer to these summer complaints. Eat Spicy Food – A vindaloo in the summer might sound crazy, but chillies and spicy curries can stimulate heat receptors in the mouth, enhance circulation and cause sweating, all of which cools the body down. fact magazine

A
s fortunate as we at FACT magazine have been when it comes to test driving the finest motorcars on the market, we have not been fortunate enough to get behind the wheel of a Subaru. That is, until now. Producing models since the 1950’s, this Japanese brand has not only proven itself on the roads but has excelled in the World Rally Championships, having won a total of five World Rally titles. As the streamlined figure of the WRX came into full view, we were immediately impressed by the sporty and sleek nature of the exterior. The most eye-catching of all external features has to be the large hood scoop that would make this car look at home on a racing track. This feature helps to cool down the engine and keep the car functioning at full performance. Additional noteworthy frontal features include the LED headlamps with Auto-leveliser as well as LED front fog lamps. Moving to the flanks, the lines and curves of the body seem to flow effortlessly from front to rear, with 18-inch aluminiumalloy wheels and side sill spoilers hinting at the WRX’s on road capabilities. At the back end, LED rear fog lamps, a twin dual exhaust system and a rear lip spoiler all add to the prowess of the vehicle. On the roof, a power-sliding, tilt-adjustable, glass sunroof, as well as carrier installation brackets, add to the comfort and functionality of this model. Slipping inside the cabin, we were greeted by the comfort of the front sport seats complete with fancy red stitching. The driver’s seat is 10-way power-adjustable with lumbar support and provides a commanding driving position. The striking red stitching continues on the tilt-adjustable, leather sports steering wheel that felt great in hand. All of the materials, trimmings and finishes throughout the vehicle are of a highquality and the overall space is well-designed and functional. With plenty of head, shoulder and legroom in both the front and the rear seating, five adults fit inside comfortably. The boot offers 460-litres of storage space, a capacity that is significantly increased when the rear seats are folded flat. The Infotainment apparatus includes a 7-inch display as well as a six-speaker audio system. This setup includes voice recognition and is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Audio remote control switches are conveniently mounted on the steering wheel and both dual USB ports and auxiliary audio input jack are located on the centre panel. A dual gage layout is present on the dashboard with a 3.5inch full-colour LCD display. We found this setup to be both functional and user-friendly, adding to an already satisfying experience. Finally, it was time to get the WRX out onto the tarmac and we were all smiles as the horizontally opposed, 4-cylinder, 4-stroke, turbocharged, Boxer petrol engine roared to life. With a 1998 cc capacity, a maximum output of 197 kW at 5600 rpm and a maximum torque of 350 Nm at 2400 to 5200 rpm, this automatic vehicle can shoot from 0 – 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and offers a top speed of 240 km/h. The WRX houses various systems and control features to improve driving performance, including Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive), a Variable Torque Distribution All-Wheel Drive System, a Multi-mode Vehicle
Dynamics Control System and Adaptive Cruise Control to name but a few. This translates to a car with great handling, cornering ability, acceleration and braking. In fact, we have to say that this Subaru model is amongst the most enjoyable vehicles we have ever had the privilege of test driving. When it comes to safety, the designers at Subaru have included a host of features to ensure you and your family’s wellbeing. These features include a multitude of SRS airbags throughout the vehicle, Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection, High Beam Assist, whiplash reducing front seats, a 4-wheel Antilock Braking System, a Brake Assist System, an Emergency Break Stop Signal, ISO-FIX Adapted Child Seat Anchors, Child-proof Rear Door Locks as well as an engine Immobiliser. In truth, the only feature we felt was missing from this impressive array was the frontal camera, a minor detail when considering everything else on offer. In closing, we found the Subaru WRX to be a well-designed, aesthetically pleasing, high-performance, safe and functional vehicle that was extremely fun to drive. ✤ fact magazine

PLAY HAS NO LIMITS If there is one really good thing happening this year, then it’s the launch of the new PlayStation 5. From design to confirmed features, here’s everything you can expect…
O
k, where shall we begin? First up, the PS5 is rocking an AMD Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores at 3.5GHz, 16GB of GDDR6 memory and a custom RDNA 2 AMD GPU that puts out 10.28 TFLOPs of processing power. But for everyone who does not speak the language, here are some juicier key facts: The next-generation console actually comes with two versions: one with an optical disc drive and one 'Digital Edition' that does without it. As for the design, it’s safe to say that the 5th generation console really stands out with a completely different look and space-age black-and-white colour scheme. Also, a number of new accessories have been revealed: A new Pulse 3D wireless headset, a DualSense Charging Station in which you can dock two controllers at once, and a HD Camera that mimics the look of the console itself. The PS5 will also be compatible with current PSVR hardware, and there are also rumours of PSVR 2, so get ready for PS5 to have a VR option! If you’re wondering which games you can play on the new PS5, let us tell you that there are a lot of options! They include a new Spider-man entry, a Horizon Zero Dawn sequel, a Demon’s Souls remake, Resident Evil 8 and many more to be announced. Now another important question PS-fans will have: Can we play PS4 games on the PS5? The answer is yes! The PS5 will definitely be backwards compatible with “almost all” PS4 games. However, just as exciting as the PS5 specs is the new controller. The Du-alSense PS5 controller comes with the same stylish look as the console. But beyond the design, it’s a slew of impressive-sounding features that marks a significant depar-ture from its predecessors: Wireless controlling, adaptive shoulder button triggers with haptic feedback, and a built-in microphone — now you can talk to friends with-out having to wear a headset. All in all, it looks like the new-generation console will bring play with no limits, and Sony officially confirmed the rough release date to be Q4 2020 — so you better start saving. ✤

S
taying stylish in your suit during the summer sizzling months is of the utmost importance to a fashion-conscious gentleman who wants to look dapper and trendy as he adapts his styles accordingly to the seasons. Maintenance of your suit during these scorching summer months is vital to ensure its longevity and appearance. 1. STORAGE IS KEY Ensure your suits are placed on high-quality hangers which are the correct size for your suit either 18” or 22” wide. 2. COVER IT UP Protect your suit with a breathable protective garment cover as this will keep it free from dust and discolouring.

SUMMER TIPS - SUITS •
3. THE MAGIC OF STEAMING Air your suit and allow it to breathe for 24 hours after wearing it and try to steam the garment to remove any wrinkles in the fabric. 4. DO NOT DRY CLEAN REGULARLY Too much dry cleaning can cause damage to the natural fibres within the suit due to the chemicals being used by laundry shops. It can also affect the overall appearance of the garment. So I would suggest to not over dry clean your suit, only when it is necessary. 5. A BRUSH CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE Use a good quality brush to remove any debris or dirt that may be on the suit and be gentle when you are brushing the suit clean. There are so many small particles stuck inside the fabrics that it is only necessary to clean it before storing it. 6. GIVE IT SPACE Store your suit correctly, ensuring that you have ample space in your closet to allow your suit to hang properly. The suit should have enough room to breathe to avoid wrinkles.✤

AMOUAGE:
INTERLUDE BLACK IRIS MAN
I
Amouage has unveiled its latest creative introspective for men.
nterlude Black Iris, inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s painting, is a smooth new take on Amouage’s 2012 predecessor, Interlude. The spicy, woody Eau de Parfum evokes an air of disorder while maintaining a sense of balance and tranquillity through the inventive use of Orris, Frankincense and Myrrh. A truly orchestrated blend of technical skill and creative integrity brought to life by master perfumer Pierre Negrin; Interlude Black Iris represents a moment of internal harmony and self-reflection in a world of external chaos. “Amouage is currently in what we like to call a ‘creative interlude’ which makes Interlude Black Iris an appropriate first creation under the new stewardship of the brand. It takes time to understand the rich archives of a venerable house like Amouage and to be able to define a new direction that brings something new and interesting, while still staying true to the soul of the brand. That’s why Interlude Black Iris is not a totally new narrative but rather a homage to the past with the promise of new beginnings,” expressed Renaud Salmon, Chief Experience Officer at Amouage. “With Interlude Black Iris, I wanted to express the original inspiration of the tension between harmony and disorder through a more balanced and considered approach. The original Interlude presents some strong colour blocks in its composition and I wanted to reveal less obvious facets of the composition to make the nuances and beautifully textured patina smoother.” Presenting an odour profile that is less aromatic than the original Interlude, the rosemary notes have been reduced and the oregano note removed. In the original Interlude, there is a sweet citrus tone that has been rebalanced so as not to take away from the opulence of the iris. This makes Interlude Black Iris feel both richer and creamier, and the buttery creaminess of the iris note lasts throughout the evolution of the fragrance. Pierre Negrin is no stranger to Amouage having crafted no less than 13 of its fragrances over the years. His repertoire includes Interlude Man, Journey Woman and Man, Sunshine Man, Imitation Woman, Portrayal Woman and Man as well as Opus VI, VII, VIII, IX and XI. Interlude Black Iris is a manifestation of Amouage’s creative transformation. The new fragrance echoes its very own soundtrack, created by Belgian music producer Copal, while its captivating imagery was captured and romanticized through the lens of Russian visual artist Daniil Lavrovski. ✤ 48

Such A Fun Age By Kiley Reid
Afterlife By Julia Alvarez
Reid’s darkly funny debut follows Emira, a black, underemployed 25-year-old who splits her time between babysitting for a wealthy white family and working at Philadelphia’s Green Party office. When a late-night encounter with a grocery store security guard attracts unwanted attention, Emira’s life takes several unexpected turns, as she has been wrongly accused of kidnapping while babysitting a child. One of the most provocative page-turners of the year and definitely a good read for the summer.
Afterlife follows Antonia Vega, a retired English professor struggling to deal with the death of her husband, the disappearance of her sister, and the appearance of a pregnant, undocumented teenager on her doorstep. A beautifully written short book about life after losing a loved one that asks: What do we owe those in crisis in our families, including —maybe especially— members of our human family? How do we live in a broken world without losing faith in one another or ourselves, and how do we stay true to those glorious souls we have lost?

LUXURY
WELLNESS AT HOME PRACTICING SOCIAL-DISTANCING IS A BIG PART OF OUR DAILY ROUTINE FOR ALL OF US ACROSS THE GLOBE RIGHT NOW. TO HELP US ALL THROUGH THESE UNUSUAL DAYS, ANANTARA SPA EXPERTS FROM ACROSS THE WORLD OFFER THEIR ADVICE ON HOW TO PRACTICE SELF-CARE AT HOME, AND WE’RE SHARING THEIR WISDOM WITH YOU. 1. THE BEAUTY OF SLEEP FROM Dr Serge Landrieu Master of Wellness, Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort, Thailand. For a fully restorative sleep, it is best to stop eating after lunch and then break this fast with breakfast. If you can, try to keep a window of 16 or 18 hours without eating over 24 hours. This is a form of intermittent fasting. Do not eat food before going to sleep; if you are hungry, take a little sip of oil. Going to bed and falling asleep early is essential as the hours of sleep sustained before midnight count the most for reviving the whole immune system. To wind down for sleep, establish an evening ritual before you go to bed. This can include meditating, practicing gratitude, praying, or slowing down your breath with Pranayama (breathing exercises). To ensure that you sleep through the night, stop drinking around 5pm to 6pm, and drink just half a glass of water before bed to avoid waking in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Jump start your day by planning something you enjoy for when you wake up so that you wake up with a purpose. 2. MEDITATING FROM Dr. Eranga Kaushal Ayurveda Doctor, Anantara Kalutara Resort, Sri Lanka. Meditation helps to calm the mind and centre your chakras. Promoting reduced blood pressure, better daily functioning, and improved focus, regular practice of mindful meditation at home can help the mind send the right messages to the body and act accordingly. It also helps to lower the stress levels, which helps boost your immune system. We can recommend the Pranayama breathing meditation, also called breath control. Take a steady breath in through both nostrils. Inhale until you reach your lung capacity while maintaining a tall spine. Hold your breath for a second, then constrict some of the breath at the back of your throat, as if you were about to whisper a secret, and exhale slowly through both nostrils. The slow, calming rhythm brings natural rest to the mind and releases tension from the stressed-out parts of the body. 62

His top tips for maintaining optimum wellness during self-isolation or lockdown include following a light meal plan with healthy foods, plenty of fluids, regular exercise, and maintaining a routine. Eating light. Simple food is recommended due to lower levels of activity when staying inside a house or apartment all day. Eating heaving foods will add too much pressure to your cleansing system, which pulls down your immunity. Stay hydrated. Drinking between two and three litres of mineral water daily, room temperature or lukewarm water is best for the system. Avoid carbonated beverages and energy drinks. Exercise. Keep your daily routine balanced with mild exercise, yoga or TaiChi for 45-60 minutes every day. Stay home. Most important of all, stay at home and be healthy. D
uring the lockdown, any food that you don’t have to cook yourself has become a godsend, but the result is not always so gentle on the waistline! Enter W Doha’s new healthy W2Go range! With two combination boxes for you to choose from, one being made especially for the ever-popular keto diet, there is something for everyone. No one was more excited than us at the launch of their new lunch menu, so of course, we had to try it straight away. We opted for combination one, which contained the Poke Me Bowl, Keto beef tenderloin and a Keto chocolate cake. Ordering from the W Doha via WhatsApp was incredibly easy and hassle-free. The delivery was seamless, arriving on time, with the food still warm, in a clear sanitised bag that they help you remove carefully on arrival to ensure nothing has touched the box your food arrives in. The packaging, as to be expected from the W Doha was flawless, from the large sealed purple box to the carefully labelled food items inside. Hygiene is a top priority for all companies at the moment, but we were very impressed by the attention to detail that the W Doha provided compared to other delivery services we have tried during this time. The Poke Me Bowl was enormous! The quantity of food was fantastic. It had beautifully cooked flavoursome chicken on top of a bed of rice, with kale, edamame, spiced cauliflower, courgettes and tomatoes, all topped with pine nuts and a creamy dressing on the side. As far as salads go, it didn’t feel like a salad at all. It was fun to eat and bursting with flavour as well as being filling. The Keto beef tenderloin looked a more delicate portion, but equally as filling and utterly mouthwatering. The portion served three pieces of tenderloin topped with mushrooms and herbs and covered in gravy with finely chopped cauliflower. The sauce and flavours perfectly accentuated the taste of the beef within the dish, and it melted away as you put your knife in to cut it. If you had told us it had come from one of the top steak restaurants in Doha, we would have been inclined believed you! The dessert was keto chocolate cake, served in a jar where you can see the alternating layers of dense brownie cake and light sweet cream, topped with syrup, nuts and blackberries. The cake was deceiving, what looked like it could be dense and heavy after having devoured the previous two courses, was both rich yet light at the same time. The brilliant chefs at W have perfected matching rich deep flavours with a light texture, so the cake balanced out and doesn’t leave you feeling like it was too sickly or didn’t quite meet your chocolate craving. Being the keto option, you never know how a dessert is going to be when you’re missing one of the key ingredients (sugar), but we would never have known it was a keto dessert. There was no lack of sweetness or feeling that anything was missing or substituted. As if all that delicious food was not enough, the box also came with two drinks of choice. One was a pink strawberry smoothie (that tasted like a strawberry mocktail and made me believe I should be on a beach somewhere instead of in my living room) and a very healthy Antioxidant Supreme green 68

juice, which made us feel like a beacon of health just from drinking it. The W Doha has outdone themselves with the creation of these new W2Go boxes. They are well thought through, from the menu to the delivery, fantastic options, and a great way to feel you are giving yourself an indulgent treat (and some much needed time away from cooking!) while not piling on the pounds. Created by W Doha’s wellness ambassador, Rawane Tahtouh, these FEEL GOOD boxes are not to be missed. The main stand out to us from the W Doha experience would be the service, the level of attention to detail with their hygiene procedures was something we haven’t seen before from any delivery service in Doha. If you have been reluctant to order in because of sanitation fears, please be put at ease that their level of care is the best we have seen to protect not only you and your food, but also their staff. ✤

I
t’s been a long year and we’re only halfway through it. We’ve spent previously unthinkable amounts of time at home and we’re wondering if Netflix really is a bottomless pit of boredom filler. Talking to friends recently, I’ve realised that a lot of us are experiencing guilt. We’re anxious, we’re struggling to create goals and plan ahead and we’re not treating ourselves to a little luxury. I realised what a no-brainer that is. In our pre-COVID lives, we used to spend money with abandon and think nothing of it. We’d shop in the malls, eat in restaurants with family and friends, travel abroad, go to the cinema. We were constantly parting with cash. Suddenly, my friends and I have thought, we’re in scary times, we dare not do anything fun and we must save up for when the apocalypse arrives. Not wishing to glib but provided we play by the rules we will get through them. Meanwhile, small goals and tasty treats should be encouraged for the pleasure they bring and for something to look forward to. This is what I discovered when the Hudson Tavern delivered a takeaway dinner recently. Hudson Tavern is a popular spot at Mondrian Doha and I’ve always enjoyed it in normal times for its social vibe, walls filled with screens showing sport but also because it’s not just a good place to grab a drink, it also offers a very mouth-watering menu too. I’m a burger lover and from the moment the Hudson Tavern first opened and I ate at a stool sat at the bar there watching the Football, I remember thinking, wow, this isn’t just any old burger. I’d controversially say it might be the best hotel burger in the city. It’s definitely in the shoot out! Having said that, I did wonder how this would translate into delivery. Mondrian Doha has given this plenty of thought and their packaging and boxes ensure that the food retains heat and flavour while on the move. I collected it from the lobby of my building and saw it came in a warming container so that it stays at a gentle heat while travelling. This is important with burgers as they can become horribly soggy and squelchy. Mine was not - strong credit to them for that. I had some chicken wings from the appetisers part of their menu. I was excited to have wings but didn’t have high hopes as wings are a dime a dozen but these were very good. Well marinated, spicy and juicy. Very much better than your average chicken shop and they definitely got the taste buds singing. The French One was cooked to the chef’s recommendation, which was medium-well. The chef was right about that. The cheese, onions and mushrooms all complemented rather than overwhelmed. I’m never impressed by a burger that you can’t fit into your mouth. The size was 72

handsome but not excessive. The bun was soft and fresh; neither too soggy nor too hard. It was just right. Churros were a nice sweet addition to finish with while slouching on the couch. I really enjoyed it. A smile was back on my face and I realised that there’s nothing wrong with the occasional treat to give yourself something to look forward to! ✤

hen the Park Hyatt delivered dinner to my home, they pulled out all the stops. Excellently packaged with cute ribbons, I carried up the four heavy boxes and felt my biceps stretch. Anis is one of a few catering outlets in the stunning new Park Hyatt Doha which opened not long before the Covid-19 crisis took hold. So many, myself included, have yet to experience what it’s like inside. It’s described as a hotel for the discerning traveller and I think their culinary offerings are just that too. Anis is the hotel’s healthy eatery and wants to be a meeting spot for busy people on the go in the new hip and happening Msheireb neighbourhood. While all the government advice has urged us all to stay at home these past few months, there hasn’t been any meeting up going on but that hasn’t stopped their kitchen serving up deliciously healthy and nutritious food. The first box I opened featured an array of sushi including shrimp tempura, spicy tuna and spicy salmon. Each platter had its own tub of soy sauce and plenty of chopsticks so you can stay biosecure while sharing rolls with those you live with! The next giant box had loads more little boxes inside with a range of salads to try. Healthconscious it sure was with a large aubergine in the first one grilled with yoghurt. The marinated cauliflower with tahini and pomegranate was very virtuous but credit to the pasta salad punctuated by roasted butternut squash. That was hearty without being heavy and being neither vegetarian or pescatarian, it’s maybe little wonder that my favourite was the chicken salad served with Cajun roasted sweet potatoes. That said, vegetarians are well catered to here. The smashed chickpea salad sandwich was pretty decent. A delivery from Anis at Park Hyatt would make for a great indoor picnic this summer! The sandwiches were all healthy yet divine from chicken chapatti rolls given spice and edge from the pepper, coriander and masala to what was a meal in a wrap: slow-cooked chicken with pesto, parmesan and rocket salad. Ordering out doesn’t have to mean being naughty eating grease and carbs, as this takeaway taught me. Saying that though, they will let you indulge if you want to! If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll be putting this place on your speed dial. The desserts tray was like opening a pandora’s box of gluttony. The chocolate brownie with red berries was irresistible. The cheesecake was given a unique twist with honey and saffron which worked so well. There is something for all tastes too from the toffee and

• CHEF IN FOCUS Why did you decide to become a Chef? I decided to become a chef because I have always enjoyed cooking and eating good food. Being a chef is a very creative job and an outlet for me to express myself, Seeing my food making people happy is the reason that I do what I do, and it keeps me highly motivated. Please could you tell us a little bit about the SIG restaurants in Doha? We are interested to know about the different brands and varied cuisines. In Doha SIG have six different brands under our hospitality wing. These include a variety of international cuisines to cater to every palate. Biella is an Italian restaurant providing customers with a wide selection of Italian dishes. We use locally sourced fresh ingredients and several imported Italian products to ensure authentic flavours. Noodle House draws its inspiration from the street foods of South-East Asian cities like Hong Kong, Shanghai, Bangkok and Jakarta. Locations that are well known for their delicious noodles, soups, dim sum and main course specialities such as roasted duck. Emirgan Sutis is a famous Turkish restaurant in Istanbul that has become renowned for its breakfasts, grilled meats, milk desserts, baklava and Turkish coffee and tea. German Doner Kebab is a fast-food restaurant serving healthy and succulent kebabs. Lord of the Wings offers the best chicken wings in town with a great choice of homemade sauces for dipping and gourmet burgers that are all made fresh daily to order. Maysoun Mediterranean Bistro is SIG’s concept which provides Lebanese, Italian and International specialities in a friendly family environment. How do you source the ingredients for the restaurants? Do you focus on locally sourced or sustainable produce? We use fresh local produce as much as possible to ensure quality and freshness, and we import authentic products from Italy, Turkey, Asia and the United States, especially for items such as cheeses, meats and spices. What is it about SIG portfolio of restaurants that resonates so much with diners in Doha? I believe it is a combination of factors. Still, the main things that keep customers coming back are the authentic flavours, friendly environment and excellent service for which our restaurants are now known. What is your favourite cuisine to cook? I enjoy trying out new dishes and the best part of cooking today is that you can cook specialities from all over the world as the ingredients are available locally. What do you do to stay current on new trends? I try to visit other restaurants as much as possible. A lot of my inspiration and knowledge comes from talking to other chefs, 80

surfing the internet, browsing social media with the likes of Instagram and YouTube being particularly helpful. I also love to experiment with recipes, both new and old. How do you feel about creating dishes purely for Instagram? I’m not against creating dishes purely for photogenic purposes, but they still need to taste good. The process can be very challenging, but it’s always gratifying when you see a successful result. What’s the greatest honour or compliment you have received as a chef? Many years ago the UK band UB40 dined at my restaurant and later that evening at their concert, they dedicated their song ‘Red Red Wine’ to my restaurant. What matters more – taste or presentation? For social media, it’s all about the extravagant presentation that will capture peoples attention and in turn leads to free marketing bit; in reality, it’s all about the taste. Do you have any quick advice for young budding chefs? For anyone thinking of becoming a chef and entering into the hospitality industry, I would advise that they must love what they do and be prepared to work very hard. If you could dine at any restaurant in the world, where would you go? Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy. The restaurant from chef Massimo Bottura is regularly voted as the number one restaurant in the world, and the dishes on offer are undeniably creative and inspirational.

Many years ago the UK band UB40 dined at my restaurant and later that evening at their concert, they dedicated their song ‘Red Red Wine’ to my restaurant.”
How often do you eat out and what’s your favourite restaurant in Doha? Apart from our brands, I have a few favourite restaurants that I regularly go to when I have time off. These include Cicchetti Doha, Paper Moon Doha, Hakkasan at the St. Regis Hotel and Spice Market at W Doha. What can diners expect to taste and enjoy when dining at SIG restaurants? What are some of the signature dishes that you serve? Guests can expect to enjoy authentic, fresh and healthy foods when visiting one of the SIG restaurants. At Biella I would highly recommend the Anellini of Ricotta and the Prawn and Mussels Risotto, from Noodle House I would suggest the Japanese Beef Brisket Noodle, Singapore Curry Laksa or the Beef Short Ribs and at Emirgan Sutis it’s got to be the Manti, Beyti Keba, Saslik and Trilece. Who do you admire most in the culinary world, and why? My mentor was the two Michelin star chef Vinicio Dovier who trusted and inspired me. With the rise of influencers and bloggers, what are your opinions on this new digital world where everyone has suddenly become a food critic? I believe that influencers are no different from any other customers, and it’s essential to listen to their opinions. From the feedback gathered, I can select what will help me to improve while always staying true to myself and my preferred styles of cooking. ✤

THE ULTIMATE AT-HOME FACIAL Five top tips from Skin Republic for a salon-worthy facial at home. While we are all home safe, now is the perfect time to treat yourself to an at-home facial. So, put on your fluffiest robe, light a scented candle and get ready for glowing bouncy skin.
Step 3: Skin the extractions Just don’t do it. Picking and squeezing can lead to permanent scars, so skip the extractions and consult a professional.
Step 1: Double Cleanse It’s essential to remove all traces of make-up so your skin can absorb ingredients more efficiently. If you’re skipping on makeup at the moment, you should still cleanse to remove any oil build up from the day. First, cleanse with an oil-based make-up remover followed by a cream (if your skin is dry) or a foam-based cleanser (if your skin is on the oily side). Focus on the areas where you experience breakouts and get into those nooks and crannies. Make sure you get a nice lather going and rinse off thoroughly.
Step 4: Mask it Now that your skin is squeaky clean and super-soft, it’s time to put back the moisture. Skin Republic Sheet Masks are saturated with 25ml of serum, making them super-hydrating. There is also enough serum to apply to your neck and décolletage – which we often forget to do. Apply the mask and relax for 15 minutes. To help ingredients penetrate deeper into the skin or to improve skin firmness, you can give yourself a facial massage. If your skin requires a little more hydration, you can apply your regular moisturiser after the mask.
Step 2: Exfoliate Too much and your skin can be left sore and inflamed, too little and your skin feels congested and dry. It’s best to exfoliate a maximum of twice per week. For serious exfoliation, try the Skin Republic 24K Gold Peel-Off Face Mask. This mask dries and becomes tight, removing dirt, oil and dead skin cells as it is peeled off. Many dry skin sufferers avoid exfoliants as they feel it will make their skin more dehydrated but skipping on exfoliating can make your skin drier. The dead, dry skin cells clog the upper layers of the skin, preventing ingredients from penetrating and hydrating. Exfoliation is also great for removing those rough, dry patches. 82

Step 5: The eye mask No facial would be complete without applying a hydrating undereye mask. Applied directly under the eye and worn for up to 20 minutes, eye masks provide a concentrated and continuous dose to the delicate under-eye area. ✤
