Little things make big days

A

nd once again, the FACT family grows! I’ve never been good with goodbyes, especially when you come from a work family like ours. However, change is inevitable and there is nothing better than welcoming more people on board; its just another FACT of life. We have successfully been quarantined for three months now (Oh dear God!!) and let’s be honest, summers are going to be worst! We’re all flying all over the world during this time, some going back to hug our families and others going back for a change of scenery. I, personally, have been missing Georgia particularly and cannot wait to visit Tiblisi again. The good thing is, even if we’re quarantined, FACT’s got a little travel twist for you on p23. I do understand the frustration that comes with being indoors, especially if you’re with kids or a big family, so we jotted down a few ways for you to ‘escape’ into oblivion with our special list of Podcasts on p56. Nothing better than bingeing through life with zero regrets. Talking about zero regrets, nothing is going to keep us away from all those delicious food around town! We got our fix from W Doha Hotel with their W2Go box for our Netflix date night, p72, had a quick socially distanced meeting over Alwadi Hotel MGallery’s delicious goodies, p76, and I finally got the ideal gift for my daughter – find it on p74! If there is anything that I will ask you all to focus on, it will be your mental health. Check in with your friends, with the mommies who are quieter than usual, the friends who are rebelling and especially those who do not have family here. I’m blessed to surrounded by my family because a three-year-old making a mess 24/7 is the new norm for me! You all know I’m here for anything ☺

BIG SCREEN EXTRACTION

Highlights

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth), a fearless black-market mercenary, embarks on the most deadly extraction of his career when he's enlisted to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord in Dhaka, Bangladesh. With nothing left to lose, he takes the job and dives into the messy underworld of weapons dealers and drug traffickers.

DIRECTOR: Sam Hargrave CAST: Chris Hemsworth, Bryon Lerum, Ryder Lerum, Rudhraksh Jaiswal

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

The action thriller just hit Netflix and is already the movie that's on everyone's lips. Starring who we know best as Thor, the God of Thunder, Extraction puts Chris Hemsworth into the role of the black-market mercenary Tyler Rake. Tyler, who is the best in the business, is commissioned for a rescue mission by an imprisoned international crime lord. Motivated by his belief that he has nothing left to lose, he takes on the job and dives into one dangerous scenario after another. Especially Action buffs will fall in love, for Extraction is a pure action sequence, giving spectators well-choreographed and absolute thrilling carnage — and that for good reason: The movie is directed by Sam Hargrave, the stuntman turned filmmaker who takes all the knowledge he has acquired from his intimate involvement in action set pieces and makes an extremely entertaining movie working behind the camera.

THE OCCUPANT

Extraction is a pure action sequence, giving spectators wellchoreographed and absolute thrilling carnage”

When he loses his job as a successful executive, Javier Muñoz (Javier Gutiérrez) is forced to downsize his dream apartment to live in a smaller abode in a poorer part of Barcelona. He is drawn back to his former home and begins to plot against the new tenants, a seemingly perfect family who embody the life Javier wants.

DIRECTOR: David Pastor, Àlex Pastor CAST: Javier Gutiérrez, Mario Casas, Bruna Cusí, Ruth Díaz

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Prepare yourself for crazy plot twists and unbelievable behaviour! The Spanish Netflix thriller about a man who loses his job, and then his mind, shocks you until the very end of the movie. Directed by the brothers David and Àlex Pastor, The Occupant is not your morality tale where the bad guys get punished and the good guys rewarded. More than that, it’s an amorality tale — a reflection of the world, where kindness sometimes goes unrewarded. The story is brilliant, the directing work on point, and the actors are just as good. 20

The New Toronto 3

It Was Good Until It Wasn’t

By Tory Lanez

Canadian rapper and singer Tory Lanez just dropped the long-awaited third installment of his New Toronto series and it’s safe to say that it’s his best album to date. He sticks to one sound and tells his story unlike ever before. At 16 tracks The New Toronto 3 is a deep dive into Lanez’s psyche. In his opening track Pricey and Spicy, Tory tells us about his past life and the struggles he faced. He expresses how he went from rags to riches and makes quite the impression on track one. On top tier tracks Who Needs Love and Do The Most, he raps with determination to seek vengeance for his broken heart by upholding his material wealth, sounding as if he can’t shake off the crutch. Tory’s bold confidence could be misunderstood as arrogance but listen closer, and you’ll hear an artist who is trying to heal. An album that shows the real Tory Lanez.

By Kehlani

Kehlani has become one of R&B’s biggest stars by being radically vulnerable about her pains and passions — in short, she keeps it real. And so she does with her new album It Was Good Until It Wasn’t. Embracing the woman she’s grown to become today, she refuses to hold back on her emotions, delivering 15 tracks that represent her heart and soul. Impactful hits like Serial Lover, Water, and Grieving resonate deeply with anyone looking to gain some growth and prosperity post-breakup. At the album’s conclusion, she proves that her tendencies in love and a willingness to give her all are anything but flaws in her eyes. Lifted by guest appearances from Megan Thee Stallion, Jhené Aiko and James Blake, It Was Good Until It Wasn’t takes you through the highs and lows of a life filled with love and mistakes.

By Julia Alvarez Afterlife follows Antonia Vega, a retired English professor struggling to deal with the death of her husband, the disappearance of her sister, and the appearance of a pregnant, undocumented teenager on her doorstep. A beautifully written short book about life after losing a loved one that asks: What do we owe those in crisis in our families, including —maybe especially— members of our human family? How do we live in a broken world without losing faith in one another or ourselves, and how do we stay true to those glorious souls we have lost?

NON- FICTION

Untamed

By Glennon Doyle In her most revealing and powerful memoir yet, the best-selling author Glennon Doyle unpacks the many changes in her life since her previous two books, including the divorce from her husband. Giving incredible insight about what it means to be a woman today and the joy and peace we feel when we stop striving to meet other’s expectations, Untamed liberates women in every way possible. A book that shows you how to be brave.

POWERTRAIN: ENGINES WITH LANDMARK TECHNOLOGY The Mercedes-Benz S 560 boasts a V-8 engine that comes to the starting line with 345 kW (469 hp) and 700 Nm. The biturbo engine is among the most economical V-8 petrol engines in the world, and consumes about ten percent less fuel than its predecessor. To lower fuel consumption, four cylinders of the V-8 are simultaneously deactivated under partial load with the help of the CAMTRONIC valve-lift adjustment system. This reduces gas-cycle losses and enhances the overall efficiency of the four firing cylinders by shifting the operating point towards higher loads. The turbochargers positioned in the V of the cylinder banks represent another special feature. INTELLIGENT DRIVE: THE NEXT STEP IN DRIVING ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS The S-Class adds an additional layer of excellence by incorporating and enhancing a host of innovative driving assistance systems initially introduced in the previous model. These include: ● The Active Steer Assist, which has been noticeably improved across its entire performance range, results in markedly enhanced customer benefits. ● The Active Breaking Assist, which detects end-of-tailback situations without space for evasive action, triggers a warning as well as automatic emergency stopping when required. ● The Evasive Steering Assist supports the driver in taking evasive action when pedestrians are detected in the danger zone in front of the vehicle. ● With PRE-SAFE Sound, a short interference signal is triggered ahead of any collisions expected to produce a loud crash, in order to protect the eardrum and inner ear from high acoustic pressures. The ROAD SURFACE SCAN system detects bumps ahead of the vehicle and adjusts the ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension is further improved. CURVE, the curve-tilting function available in the S-Class sedan for the first time, allows the body to tilt to the inside of the turn by up to 2.65 degrees and thereby reduces the centrifugal forces perceived by the passengers. EXCLUSIVE EXTERIOR DESIGN The V-12 model variants are fitted with

additional chrome-finish vertical strips in the radiator grille. Seven light-alloy wheels with diameters between 17 and 20 inches have been introduced on the model. MULTIBEAM LED headlamps and ULTRA RANGE High Beam turn night into day. The ULTRA RANGE main beams produce the maximum light intensity permitted by law, which results in the brightness of the main beams remaining above the reference value of 1 lux over a distance of more than 650 metres. The S-Class also features three distinctive torches of light as an exclusive design element. The front bumper with pronounced air intakes and sporty look is also new. AUTHENTIC MATERIALS AND METICULOUS DETAIL DESIGN The material and colour concept of the leather-trimmed doors and dashboard has also been carefully composed and features a wide range of brown tones, including colour combinations such as magma grey/espresso brown or mahogany brown/silk beige. WORLD-FIRST: WELLNESS WHILE DRIVING This ENERGIZING optional feature systematically uses the functions of the climate control system (including fragrancing) and the seats (heater, ventilation, massage), the panel heating as well as lighting and musical atmospheres, and enables a specific wellness set-up tailored to the mood and need of the customer. WIRELESS CHARGING OF SMARTPHONES Wireless charging works with all mobile devices that support or can be retrofitted to support the Qi standard. The charging pad is integrated into the stowage compartment and is also available in the centre console in the rear. Front and rear passengers can receive, send, forward and use voice-to-text to dictate text messages. The Burmester® High-End 3D Surround Sound system has been expanded with a speaker in the overhead control panel and two speakers in the sides. All S-Class models are fitted as standard with the KEYLESS start function. This also marks the introduction of the attractive generation of keys, with a high-gloss black or high-gloss white design and different ornamental frames. CONTROL AND DISPLAY CONCEPT WITH WIDESCREEN COCKPIT AND NEW GENERATION OF STEERING WHEELS The interior of the S-Class has two high resolution diagonal screen displays of 12.3 inches. The Mercedes-Benz parking package and 360-degree camera come as standard in the Qatar models, giving drivers full view of the car’s surroundings. The driver can use the steering wheel controls to operate DISTRONIC cruise operation and control the entire infotainment system with the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel or operated via the touchpad controller in the centre console and by LINGUATRONIC voice control. ✤

• LIFE IN QUARANTINE

QUARANTINE LIFE: FOUR THINGS WE MISS Staying home and staying safe is top priority right now. But when we finally go outside again, all the things we took for granted are going to be enjoyed to the fullest. Here’s just four of the best things in life that we can’t wait to get back after quarantine…

HUGGING A hug. It is a simple hug that brings so much good and carries away so much bad. The hug of a loved one brings feelings of love, happiness, and safety, and carries away feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety. Although nothing changes and nothing is really “fixed”— we feel better when we make that little close contact. It’s just that simple. A hug transfers energy. A hug is a form of communication, because it can say things you don’t have the words for. A hug connects us to each other. A hug is what makes us realise that someone else is there. A hug is love. But a hug from a loved one feels very far off now. To put it simply, social distancing sucks. Quarantine has us all feeling lonely, and never ever before have we felt more isolated as a human race than now. Never ever before have we felt the need of hugging so strong. And how could we not? This form of close contact is our first language. One of our core needs. Did you know that research proved that “skin hunger” actually does exist? Skin contact is essential for our well-being. A hug is essential for our well-being. Scientists say you need four hugs a day for survival, eight for maintenance, and 12 for growth. But too many of us, since quarantine, can’t give and receive a single hug. If there is one thing we miss deeply and terribly during this time, one thing we can’t wait to have back, it is hugging each other. 38

LIFE IN QUARANTINE •

AMUSEMENT A good laugh, an activity, an experience, any situation that is fun — from going to the movies to dining out with our loved ones, to shopping, or even strolling around the streets — amusement brings happiness. It stimulates us and induces the range of human emotions that enrich our daily life. It helps us to destress and step back from all the serious business around us. Amusement alleviates the fear of life. Amusement softens life — something we need right now more than ever but can’t have at all. Being trapped in quarantine, we aren’t having the best time. And we feel it. If one thing is for certain, then it is our impatience for amusement to be a part of our daily life again.

afraid. Getting out of the house and walking more than 100 steps a day — we miss it. And we can’t wait to break free and move again, the way we are meant to.

MOVEMENT Movement is the essence of life. Movement is ancient. Every great cause begins with a movement. Without movement, nothing can exist. We as humans wouldn’t exist. Walking, running, jumping, crawling, swimming, dancing, fighting — our bodies are designed to move. Movement energises us, empowers us, and generates feelings of well-being. So, it’s understandable that we are going nuts while being immobilised during quarantine. As we are forced to stay at home, our movement is limited and with that, our feelings of well-being. We feel sad, anxious or a little bit

TRAVELLING Travelling is living in its purest form. Why? Because travelling is exploring. And we feel the most alive when we are exploring. When you travel, you explore not only new places, but also new things about the world you live in, about others, and eventually about yourself. Travelling is exploring new views, new truths, new everything. Travelling opens you up. It folds you, only to unfold you again. And when you come back home, you’ve gained more perspective. Travelling is fun. Travelling helps you get away from the routine and the daily chores. Very often travelling means tasting new delicious food. We love travelling for so many reasons. But mostly we love travelling for the freedom it comes with. Travelling is not limited. You can travel to any place on earth, from mountains to seas to cities and villages. It’s the freedom to explore and live. And we feel the most alive when we are exploring. That’s why we can’t wait for normalcy to return, so we can go out again, and explore, and live. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.FACTQATAR.COM FOR MORE IDEAS ON WAYS TO STAY ENTERTAINED THROUGHOUT QUARANTINE. fact magazine

A

s we sit in quarantine trying to survive these unprecedented times, it can feel like we are bombarded with information on how to raise our immunity and keep our overall health in check. One of the biggest terms circulating right now is superfoods. Superfood is a fairly new term and is generally understood to refer to food types that are exceptionally nutrient dense. This could include something like seaweed, fruits and vegetables or fermented foods through to wild herbs, roots and mushrooms that have been processed in a certain way to increase their nutrient profile. STARTING YOUR JOURNEY It is important to remember that everyone’s journey and needs are different. It is recommended to create one new individual habit at a time. For one person that may be increasing the amount of vegetables eaten, while for another it might be the need to drink more water whilst reducing processed food. Regardless of the adjustment that you are planning to undertake, we suggest opting for one that you would really like to commit to. SUPERFOODS TO THE (HEALTHY) RESCUE Thankfully, having to incorporate healthy food into your diet doesn’t mean you have to break the bank for it. Many everyday foods have brilliant properties and the Mediterranean diet has the largest body of research to back its medicinal effects on our bodies. This includes olive oil, fish, rosemary, thyme, garlic, artichoke and walnuts. 42

MYTH BUSTING SUPERFOODS: The influx of information about superfoods can be confusing and overwhelming. To make things simpler, here are the most important misconceptions to takeaway when it comes to superfoods: ● They are not drugs; they alone will not cure illness. ● They are not a quick repair to a bad diet ● They do not replace exercise and mental health related activities ● They are not empty, they are great nutritious foods ● They are not dangerous We all have the factor of choice; we are constantly making decisions about how to spend our money and what value we attribute to these items. The Huawei Watch GT 2e enters the fitness watch world and makes that one watch to track it all. Get that extra push to workout, sleep well, stay hydrated and track your health while staying home and staying healthy.

S

taying fit and working out don’t necessarily need to be limited to just gyms or fitness centres. There are a lot of solutions that you can follow to maintain your fitness levels in the comfort of your home, and the perfect companion for that is the all new Huawei Watch GT 2e. Huawei’s latest smartwatch packs all the fitness features that come with the original watch GT 2, but with a sportier design and a cheaper price point. This is even with running all major functions including continuous heart-rate monitoring, GPS tracking and music playback. Stylish and functional design: Smartwatches have gone through a wide range of design aesthetics; however, if you plan to workout extensively, then you need one that is a bit more practical as well. Keeping users in mind, the Huawei Watch GT 2e comes with a unibody design that integrates the 1.39-inch AMOLED dial of the smartwatch into the strap for a more refined look. On the functional side, this makes the watch more comfortable and also enables for accurate data tracking, even while your arms are swinging. 15 professional workout modes, both indoor and outdoor: Huawei’s new wearable is aimed at active users and can actively track a wide range of physical activities. This includes 15 professional workout modes, both indoor and outdoor, and 85 custom workouts in categories such as extreme, leisure, aquatics, fitness, ball games, winter sports, rock climbing, parkour, skateboarding, surfing, tennis, baseball and even aerobic exercise as a part of hip-hop dancing. It can also detect six different workouts, including outdoor running, outdoor walking, indoor walking, indoor running, elliptical and rower automatically. Essentially, this means that no matter what workout you do at home, ranging from walking on a treadmill, using an elliptical machine, free training or even aerobics and dance, your Huawei Watch GT 2e will track it all, and send you a comprehensive analysis along with tips on how to improve. Monitor your health efficiently: Working out or keeping track of your fitness at home requires you to monitor your health accurately, and the new GT 2e shines here. I

nspired by the feminist writer Natasha Walter who puts a woman at the centre of a spy thriller, Max Mara imagines the wardrobe for a female James Bond: Pastel short-sleeved suit jackets with military-tailored shorts and knee-high socks together with train conductor-esque hats that match the fabric. It’s oldfashioned and masculine tailoring paired with feminine pastels that make the new 007 and keep her cool when she’s chasing through the jungle. She is prepared for every eventuality. Cocktails with the subject of her assignment? She has long pale paisley print bias cut skirts and fluid pastel gowns with tough looking braces. Max Mara’s Bond walks across the lawn to a waiting helicopter in a flurry of diagonally placed silk volants. In this movie – and in real life – Max Mara never lets her down. ✤

MY LIFE IN QUARANTINE… As we step into another month of staying safe and staying home, FACT asked some of Doha’s very own residents to share their experience of living through a global pandemic in 2020… LINDSEY STEENKAMP Communications Manager for The International Physiotherapy Centre Unlocking creativity during lockdown has been a daily journey. The world so often seems to be moving at a million miles an hour, leaving us with very little time to deeply feel and explore the idea of our true and natural creative source. Lately, I find myself relishing the extra time, lack of distraction and noise, leaving me space to draw and create. I have found solace in the rhythm of creating without being influenced or wrapped up in trends and the overload of external input we are usually flooded with. There is a quiet creative beauty in this experience, a journey to be savoured.

DORIEN SMIT Area Director of Sales and Marketing, InterContinental Doha Staying at home and not being able to go out to the beach, restaurants, bars and hang out with friends is the new norm. To add to this, no sport activities, no school and kids’ activities! I have to say it does make you more creative and think differently about your life. I have always been in a hurry and have the fear of missing out. I’ve always pushed my family to experience ‘the most’ by pushing them to go here, see that, and experience everything. In the current situation, I realize that being at home with the family and not being able to conduct your normal routine forces you to think differently. As my Spanish husband likes to say, ‘We are now taking it more the Spanish way’! We developed a new routine that involves our boys (two and four years old), more like taking a walk in the morning before we start home-schooling. The boys have started to help in the kitchen and I have also started to bake cookies, cakes and pizzas with them. Disney movies and ‘family lockdown tips and ideas’ on Facebook have been my saviour. In the evening, my husband and I go out for a run order to try to keep in shape. Things at work have also changed and we’re all staying in touch via video calls. Let’s see what the future brings and hopefully soon will discover what the new normal will look like. fact magazine

CLAUDIA MORANA Marketing & PR Manager at Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl – Doha These new times are having a resounding effect on us as individuals` and as communities. As a business, we had to completely rethink the way things were done in the past by keeping in mind the new measures and safety and hygiene standards, enforcing our values of empathy, respect and exceptional care for our guests. On the other end, I really appreciate that we are more than ever connected with each other. I found out that we are more appreciative of things we all used to take fore-granted, like our freedom of going out and travelling, hang out with friends, chilling by the beach or experiencing a new restaurant; now we do really have the opportunity to reflect about how much value these are for our personal lives. I’m staying motivated, trying to do the best to support my job and, by doing so, I realize how much also I’m supporting myself. I’m spending more time in thinking about myself, my past, my future and I enjoy some “me” time doing home trainings and making healthy food – a real luxury, considering that in my past daily routine, I was barely sleeping five hours per night.

MAISA TAHA Founder/ Managing Partner “La Vedette De Maisa Salon” While I’ve faced many challenges during quarantine, I’m also thankful for the time that I’ve had to focus on my own personal growth, quality family time, and pushing my business to evolve. I’ve taken online courses, played board games and read books with my parents. Honestly, I’m immensely proud of the businesses in Qatar and their ability to adapt quickly. As an entrepreneur this time has been the most challenging but it pushed me to come up with innovative ways to stay in touch with our beauty salon clients and brides virtually. Additionally, I’ve used this time to create an online image consultation platform. 68

CHRISTINA KIWAN Director of Sales for Millennium Plaza Doha The distancing helped me to value each and every person in my life. It helped me to appreciate every hug, kiss and every close moment with our beloved one. I had a unique experience since quarantine that I’ve never had before. It is the feeling of being unsecured, uncertain and worried all the time. It turns our lives up and down and it puts us in a circle where everybody is scared from being affected, sick in a personal perspective and to lose their jobs on business level. At the beginning I was scared and worried, but it has also its positive sides. I have learned how to adapt with this change, how to accept this pandemic and deal with it. With time I have realized that I had more time for my family, cook healthy food and dedicate myself to workout at home. I have learned not to miss any chance to go out, see our beloved ones whenever possible, because life can change in only one minute.

JAYMMY ASSAF Proud mom of two boys Creative director having culinary passion Being a creative mom, our home was always a nest for art, edutainment activities, cooking, recycling, science experiments and many more artistic activities capable of transforming any dull yellow spot to a shining warm sun. When the corona hit the globe fast and furious, at first the quarantine time was hard; we were all confused, perplexed and scared. Confined at home far from our family, deprived from our social life, no schools and no outings. But with time and knowledge, we found back our comfort zone and got back to our routines. But, this time what was a hobby and passion to do from time to time became a daily zeal awaited from the boys. They started to look forward to this daily dose of happiness and creativity the minute we end our zoom sessions! What makes me revive my blog www. marmiteetponpon.com and share daily posts on Instagram hoping to spread art and beauty in these difficult times. You can always find something positive even in the worst things, don’t you? fact magazine

SHIL RAJA CEO and Founder Four One One Salon During quarantine I have had some amazing days and the odd occasion of feeling overwhelmed with the impact Covid 19 has made on the life of my family, friends and our businesses. Quarantine has allowed me the opportunity to think, slow down life, reflect and spend quality time at home so I can cook more often, spend time with family and catch up regularly on Zoom with friends around the world. I am working every day on promoting my social media page and engaging with our customers to help and support them with their beauty needs. You don’t release how much we all rely on beauty salons until they are closed. It’s not easy to keep my business going and staff engaged but we have fortunately had a surge in sales of our natural skincare, haircare products and our nail polishes so deliveries have kept us busy. We are all in this storm just not in the same boat so I am so grateful for the life I have in Doha.

CHARBEL JANDRI Creative Managing Director / Senior Events Consultant GRAPHITY MARKETING In a time where movie-like situations become our real life, spreading and causing dramatic changes to our daily routine, one can’t but adapt and try to make the best out of the situation in hand. This situation has had a positive impact on my life as it has helped me discover my unexplored potential from a business perspective and granted me the chance to cherish the more valuable things in life; my family and our wellbeing. As a business owner, I have developed and managed remote operations with my team, and have successfully catered to our client’s requests. A signature achievement was creating and managing a virtual event with 500 attendees, which was a first for Graphity. As a family man, the “Stay Home” experience allowed me to spend more time with my family where our time was divided between online schooling for the little one, and daily family activities such as board games, movies, crafts creation and even cooking (here I found a new passion!) After all, I believe that like many others we have started adapting and finding our way around this pandemic which is a game changer in our life path. 70

THE PERFECT MEAL Coming right out of Ramadan, we needed fancy-comfort meals that we had been craving all day. First stop: W Doha Hotel’s spectacular food.

W

Doha Hotel, one of the finest names when it comes to hospitality and dining experiences, has always been a favourite at the FACT office. Whether it is their impeccable services when we’re doing staycations, their quirky little messages, their personalized spa experiences, or their oh-so-popular dining options. The W2Go menu had been on our list for weeks but we just wanted to be in the give-me-goodvibe mood before we had a chance to be a little part of this experience. We ordered our favourites from the entire menu and just wanted to keep adding to our list, which is a norm for us when it comes to this hotel. Arriving in style in their waistcoats and the now-iconic purple W2Go box, we knew we had the best in the lot with this meal.

La Spiga by Paper Moon La Spiga, known for their exquisite Italian flavors, always leaves us in a fix. Their various pizza flavours, including the divine Burrata E Melanzane with its heavenly burrata cheese adding to the flavour, has been on top of top pizzas to go-to in town. This time, however, we took it slow and started with the Margherita pizza – a juicy treat to kick off our day. The pizza had a crusty dough and a very traditional tomato base with stringy mozzarella cheese, just enough to tingle with your tastebuds with all that traditional Italian taste. This pizza was a simple yet exciting part of the dinner. Market by Jean-Georges W Doha Hotel’s culinary journey and its diverse dining has everyone in town talking about the exemplary unique taste of every restaurant. So we made sure that we took a trip down to the restaurants we miss so much and get a taste of all the restaurants. Similarly, the shrimp salad from Market transpired to be a very colorful and fresh bowl and stood out as the main course by itself. The crispy salad leaves and the succulent shrimps with a combination of its sweet sauce are only known to seafood lovers – real foodie gustos aboard! Spice Market by Jean-Georges Our favourite part of our meal would have to be the Asian fusion culinary delight; the Vietnamese Chicken curry. We reveled in the sweet and tangy curry with its moist chicken and tender meat as we knighted it as the table pleaser. We could feel JeanGeorges inspiration from colourful street cuisines and spices of the region. Add rice to the side and a great movie to watch with the family and you’ve got yourself a great family dining experience that you’re not going to forget. You’ve got to be careful as you enjoy this as you might be biting into hot chillies! W2GO has a varied menu to skim through and one which is not likely to disappoint! They’ve added the WeTox menu to their list because they know that quarantine comes with weight-gain tales so you’ve got yourself your healthy fix too! We’re honestly thinking of a WeTox session after all the food we have been consuming lately. Using W Doha Hotel’s restaurants wisely is the right way ToGo for us! ✤

AFTERNOON DELIGHT When life in quarantine continued, we started looking for reasons to celebrate anything and everything. We found a sweet deal at EllaMia and decided we could definitely use this for our virtual date with our friends

W

here we miss our friends and crave human interaction after over two months of staying inside, we decided to make the best of the situation we are in and have a virtual teaparty with a few favourites. We collectively decided to order our afternoon tea packages from EllaMia, Mondrian Doha to give the right ‘feels’ of being together and maybe even ‘fake fighting’ over the last bites. Ever since EllaMia launched, it has been a favourite of ours so it was a complete no brainer to opt for this bakery for a one-ofa-kind event. The Taste to Go initiative has been a blessing for us as we’re not missing out on anything delicious at this point. Okay so we do miss our Frozen Forest set up, we won’t lie, but soon dear heart! Without even having to run after them, EllaMia called us sharply at 3 PM to receive the order from the lobby. Our delivery girl (more power to her) was taking all the precautions needed with her gloves and masks and greeted us with the chirpiest voice – friendliness, check! Three boxes of the iconic black and white EllaMia colours held all the goods that ultimately resulted in the classic ‘Mia feels. The bonus box? A cookie and cupcake decorating kit that comes with 4 cookies, 4 cupcakes, 3 different coloured butter creams and a selection of toppings that can only be described as heavenly. If there are any mama’s out there who just need a break, this addition to the afternoon tea is the best thing that could happen to you. As you sit and sip some tea with the girls, you can just have the kids busy with this treasure and get to breathe for a while. That’s exactly what we did too, and that wasn’t even the best part. There is nothing sweeter than cookies and cupcakes that are finally yours to have as the kids have gotten their fair share of butter cream that they kept licking it off the piping bags! Didn’t we say the experience was heavenly? The main tea itself was nothing short of splendid on its own. A deal fit for 2, we were in awe of being able to experience a few EllaMia favourites in our sunroom as we sat through one of the most magnificent sunsets of Doha. A personalised handwritten note already gave us the comforting feels and we set the table with a divine selection of a carefully curated menu; the savouries included the classic egg & mayo burger in a black bun; simple yet magnificent. The twist to the standard cheese sandwich, where the cloudy soft green and orange bread was wrapped in cheese, couldn’t have been a better fit in this deal. The zesty salmon on the buttered crunchy bruschetta bread was nothing short of perfection. Goes without saying; there was nothing left on the plate once we got done.

The pastries, the highlight of EllaMia for us, were a mix of sumptuous desserts we couldn’t keep away from. The onebite crusty strawberry tarts, the decadently rich chocolate brownie and the fruitfully zesty lemon tarts added a whole new dimension to the experience. When you speak about a complete package, EllaMia’s afternoon tea takes the cake home (brings it home in this instance0 for us. Mondrian Doha promises to deliver the same quality you get at the hotel and we could not ask for more. ✤

THE QATARI FLAIR Living in Doha, there is nothing better than becoming hooked on the local cuisine. When life has us craving for all things Arabic, we sought the best there is in the city and Alwadi Hotel Doha, MGallery made sure our evening was all about lush food

D

ining at Alwadi Hotel Doha, MGallery has always been a favourite for us. With the essence of Qatari hospitality represented in the form of the generosity that has always prevailed in their service style. We couldn’t wait to experience their dining at home. Our food arrived in fashion with decorative paper boxes that were clearly labelled for us. The lavish meal offers the sharing presentation that we have come to expect from the hotel, and we graciously accepted the order because hey, we miss our restaurant dining experiences after all. Items on the menu included grilled meats and seafood that can be enjoyed in the form of ‘Grand Platters’ ensuring diners sample a selection of the best seared morsels on offer, We were therefore in a real dilemma with our order. 76

ON THE MENU •

Taking care of those Arabic cravings that we have been having lately, the impressive array of Hummus, Tabbouleh and Fattoush were a bonus to the tantalising regional specialities such as the mixed grill and kibbeh with pomegranate molasses. The presentation was a revelation and the selection of Hummus adorned with ‘jewels’ and garnishes exemplified this. The starters, including the fried Samosa spinach, meat kebbeh and vegetable spring rolls initially tempted us away from the family-style chicken shawarma, housed in its tender bread and packed full of juiciness. Still, the Shish Barak captured our heart from the moment we opened the box. The aroma had us smacking our lips. The offering was a genuinely spectacular array of the Middle East’s most decadent dishes and we didn’t expect anything short of magnificent from the culinary geniuses at the hotel. Expectations were exceeded with this incredibly flavoursome dish and we’re still thanking the food Gods for this experience. Dessert came in the form of a luscious date pudding that we oh so graciously topped with lashings of a royally delicious sauce. The dish was spectacularly divine and will remain forever on our ‘must have’ list. A tray of Arabic sweets and baklava are always welcomed and we are still biting on the last few pieces as we type this. We adore how the essence of the Qatari hospitality at the Alwadi Hotel Doha, MGallery is translated into our home dining experience. We’ve always loved the finest Arabic cuisine and have been privileged to try the offering from this hotel. It feels like we got a taste of local culinary heritage, served with a generous dose of renowned local hospitality. ✤

I

n March 2019, we witnessed one of the most exceptional events that Qatar had seen locally. The 10-year wait for the reveal of the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) which saw A-list celebrities around the world flock to our shores. We were not just in awe of them, but mostly of this master piece by Jean-Nouvel. Over the course of the year, NMoQ had been giving us various updates; there was a gift shop there, new installations, interactive games for children and finally, my favourite, the opening of Jiwan, the Qatari restaurant led by Executive Chef Damien Leroux and Head Chef Jeremy Cheminade. So, when life knocks on your door and gives you the chance to sit with world-class chefs of this calibre, you RUN towards the opportunity. I entered Jiwan and felt a sense of calmness take over. The concept has a soothing vibe, paying an ode to its name ‘Jiwan’, meaning the ‘perfect pearl’. The sandy tones of the carpet, the Swarovski beads dancing from the chandelier caught the sunlight and shone on the interior, making you notice the ‘desert and sea’ concept as you eventually notice the carpet colour subtly mixing with hues of blue. The décor inspires an exciting sensory journey that we’re thrilled to begin. Koichi Takada really fixates on the smallest of details to capture the essence of Qatar with this project. Greetings were exchanged and chef Damien dove right into his usual hospitality that I now know as his trademark. The conversation started with how Jiwan came into being. As we continued to talk about life in Doha and our preference of cuisine, conversation flowed easily. Damien moved to Doha in 2017 after 80

chef’s made sure they explored more nooks and corners of the city – on foot – including Souq Waqif! After experimenting with different kinds of saffron and not finding the taste that they had in mind, they came across a small shop in the neighbourhood of the museum and voila! Perfection in Saffron form of course. That being just one story of one of the spices, imagine the effort that went into this project from the team. Where Damien had gotten used to Doha, Jeremy was still coming into his own outside the kitchen as well. Speaking of the lush history and icon that the museum is, there was only one thing on their mind for this restaurant; excellence. The textures and flavour of the food rose from the Bedouin tales of the country and using fire, water, air and earth as part of the cooking techniques. Inspired by the movements of the sea, the menu was in complete harmony with the notion of using Qatar’s nature and rich traditions making the food simple yet savvy. The sharing style of the restaurant and its modern, contemporary touch to the ever-loved Qatari cuisine makes Jiwan exactly what we need; a place to get together and just enjoy the moment. You can get lucky by experiencing the sunset and watch the restaurant come to life, a reflection of the sun shining on the sand and sea, whilst you indulge your taste buds with world-class flavours. ✤

receiving the opportunity to be the Executive Chef of IDAM. He might be trained by one of the best in the field but his own personality gives his food certain characteristics that you will fall in love. As Chef Jeremy joins us, Jiwan takes on a whole new level for me. This is why I love knowing the backstories of such places! The two chefs came together the same way the desert and sea were the inspiration; the rosy tint on a white pearl of the interior merged with the dynamic shades of teal water. I excused myself and went to enjoy the view from the al fresco dining area where it seemed like time just stood still. I noticed that even the outdoor seating complimented the design theme of the entire restaurant; the majlis was were decorated across the terrace to make sure everyone had their privacy. The quick break was all Chef Jeremy needed to relax as he took charge of the conversation and guided us to the kitchen to show us how they had put together the cutlery to amplify the colours of the food on the plate. Everything came together beautifully. As he was in his element there, I focused on Jeremy to continue the conversation because you could see his love for making food come to life the minute that he started talking about how Qatar had initially been a challenge to him. Imagine taking weeks to learn how to make rice according to the people’s taste? The gastronomical journey needed a Jiwan trademark so the chefs took it in their own hands to make sure the right spices went into these creations, giving NMoQ one of the best culinary twists.
