THE EDITOR

For the Love of Food “I won’t be impressed with technology until I can download food.” – Anonymous

I

can hardly believe that it’s my second year announcing the annual FACT Dining Awards Doha to you all. And as swiftly as time flies, the more Qatar’s dining options have developed. We’ve had some seriously amazing additions to the food scene in the city this year. From hospitality newbies like The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa and Shangri-La Hotel, Doha, to independent openings such as Nobu and Wagamama, there have been celebrity chefs from all corners of the world coming to our shores for the culinary celebrations. And let’s not forget, a number of our favourites have revamped their menus, come up with new and innovative themed offers, and still get huge love from Doha’s diners. It’s safe to say that the last 12 months were definitely a great time for all of us who love to eat. With that said, turn to p27 for our final shortlist of nominees for the FACT Dining Awards Doha 2016, and let us know if your favourites made the cut. Don’t forget to vote online at www.fact-magazine.com! Arts is the big thing in Doha this month and we bring you an exclusive insight into the first major exhibition as part of Qatar China 2016 Year of Culture. FACT talks to world-renowned artist Cai Guo-Qiang to learn more on What About The Art? Contemporary Art from China which will be on display at QM Gallery Al Riwaq (p55). If you’re familiar with the sky ladder video that went viral a few months ago – this is him, the artist himself ! We also caught up with Doha-based artist Stephen Watkins, ahead of his solo exhibition at The Corridor, Grand Hyatt Doha (p63), he has some seriously cool skills to share. We’ve absolutely had more than our fair share of really good food this month, putting countless venues to the test. If it was anyone else, they might be considering a new gym routine. And though exercise is a must and a little sweating it out never hurt anybody, in my book, the same goes for food. It’s a must, especially in Doha, and a little treat to dine out every now and then, never hurt nobody (except, maybe, your pocket!). Until next time... Keep Calm and Eat On.☺

Buena Vista Social Club Bringing traditional Cuban music and Latin American flair to Doha, is the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club. With deep musical roots dating back to the early decades of the 20th century, the Buena Vista Social Club was, originally, a members’ club in Havana, Cuba, that closed in the 1940’s. The original club held dances and musical activities, becoming a popular location for musicians to meet and play during the recession. In 1995, nearly 50 years after the club was closed, it inspired a recording made by Cuban musician Juan De Marcos Gonzalez and American guitarist Ry Cooder, with traditional Cuban musicians, which revived the best of the Buena Vista Social Club as it became an international success. Now, several surviving members of the original Buena Vista Social Club, along with new members currently tour worldwide. The 13-member band called Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club will be making a stop in Doha for the first time, on their very last tour named Adios. Make sure you’re there to witness a legendary performance. ✤ GO: Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club will perform at Indigo in Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel on March 25. A Click for a Cause

Silks from the Silk Road Shangri-La Hotel, Doha marked the official opening of its first photography exhibition, titled A Click for a Cause - #ShangrilART, in the exhibition foyer located at level 2 of the property. The hotel commissioned four talented Qatari photographers to take photos that depict the vividly intricate details of souqs, or traditional marketplaces in Qatar. Participating in the photography exhibition is professional Qatari photographer Rashed Almohannadi whose work has been exhibited and collected by curators all around the world; Qatar writer, blogger and photographer Tahani AlHajri, who loves to travel and capture the scenes at historical sites, cultural places, and traditional market; then there’s Khalid Al-Shibli, a gifted nature and landscape photographer of three years; and Ameera Radhi, a filmmaker, founder of QomraQtr photography and, currently, a student at VCU Qatar with a curiosity for photography and a fearless approach to exploring new things. With this event, Shangri-La Doha hopes to cement its position as a supporter of arts and culture, especially local Qatari talents. This year, residents and visitors of Qatar will be treated to a rich programme of exhibitions and events to mark Qatar China 2016 Year of Culture, which celebrates the relations between the State of Qatar and the People’s Republic of China through cultural partnerships between Qatari and Chinese organisations, institutions and individuals. The first world-class exhibition marking this celebration is What About the Art? Contemporary Art from China, opening at QM Gallery Al Riwaq this month. FACT talks to curator, and internationally-acclaimed Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang to learn more about this fascinating showcase, as well as his own journey into art‌ fact magazine

H

i Cai! Tell us more about What About The Art? and what visitors to the exhibition can expect to see? What About the Art? Contemporary Art from China is an exhibition that I spent near three years researching and curating. It will open on March 14 at Qatar Museums’ 3,500sqm Gallery Al Riwaq, and will feature works by 15 living artists and artist collectives born in Mainland China, including: Jenova Chen, Hu Xiangqian, Hu Zhijun, Huang Yong Ping, Li Liao, Liang Shaoji, Liu Wei, Liu Xiaodong, Jennifer Wen Ma, Sun Yuan and Peng Yu, Wang Jianwei, Xu Bing, Xu Zhen, Yang Fudong, and Zhou Chunya. The exhibition examines the issue of creativity. Recent critical reception of contemporary Chinese art has focused largely on sociopolitical issues and record market prices. In response to the lack of detailed consideration given to contemporary Chinese artists’ artistic value and originality, the exhibition confronts the contemporary art world with the question: What about the art itself? Visitors will be able to view each of the artists’ body of work, across the media of painting, sculpture, installation, video, performance, and interactive video game design – presented in an independent gallery space. There will also be a gallery Timeline, which displays archival documents of contemporary Chinese art from 1949 to present. This gallery will provide visitors with a rare glimpse into the historical and cultural development of contemporary Chinese art by revealing its parallel and conflicting relationship with mainstream Chinese culture. What is it about contemporary art that grips you? Growing up watching my father paint, I understood that while traditional

painting and calligraphy left us with abundant heritage, it could at the same time restrain us. The reality in our contemporary world is constantly changing; our societies filled with conflicts. We cannot linger in ancient methodologies and sentiments; instead, we must respond to our realities today, directly, while inventing a new language to do so. This is what I think is the significance of contemporary art. Of course, many themes relevant today are ancient and timeless, yet we still need to ask questions from today’s perspective. We need to absorb nutrients from our multitudes of diverse realities, dialogue with different cultures, and create a new artistic language to participate in this dialogue. Why is it important to showcase contemporary Chinese culture and society to a wider audience – and is there a message you’d like to convey through this exhibition? Honestly speaking, I’m not sure it is my agenda to showcase the big picture of contemporary Chinese culture and society. In fact, the world has been paying attention to contemporary Chinese art for quite a while, but often from the perspective of the cultural context or sociopolitical issues the art presents, or by its record auction results. What I hope to call attention to in this exhibition is something more fundamental: the artists’ individual pursuit of methodologies and artistic language. Of course, I’m not saying that contemporary Chinese artists should not discuss their cultural backgrounds, politics and responsibilities for the society. I want to shift the attention of the art world – both in and out of China – to a different angle. Art can discuss, and should pay attention to, politics. Take Freedom by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu, for example. The piece alludes to the Chinese

sociopolitical background that most people can understand and also expect Chinese artists to speak up about: it represents Chinese people’s desire for freedom. However, many artists are concerned about this issue; why did I choose to exhibit this piece in particular? Because as an artist, you ultimately need to express yourself using the language of art. Putting the issue out there alone is not enough. Art has been used for political purposes in many societies; a few decades ago, art was used as a catalyst for social reform. However, the Soviet Union disintegrated and we don’t remember many artists from that era. Similarly, if our art is to respond to the reality of today, without an innovative methodology, however responsive it may be, it will be forgotten by history. That’s why I titled the exhibition What About the Art? What is your preferred medium of art and why? If I didn’t answer gunpowder, you might think I’m avoiding the question! ➻

fact magazine

57

ARTS EXHIBITION

In fact, gunpowder is the medium that I engage with, most. Because of its unpredictability and uncontrollability, it connects us to the cosmos, nature, the unseen world, and the transient quality of human life. It is a captivating material, and as I get older, I’m gaining more understanding of this material. What messages or perceptions do you hope that visitors will take from this exhibition? The main focus of the exhibition will be on the artworks and the creative endeavors behind each artwork. As the curator, I hope that this is an exhibition that asks questions. The exhibition doesn’t make a statement that contemporary Chinese art is innovative or has artistic merit, but rather it raises an issue: it is necessary for us to discuss individual artist’s creative practice. I hope that addressing this topic in Doha will provide inspiration to, and find resonance with, young Arab artists seeking the creative means to address the relationship of Islamic culture to the rest of the world. Moreover, the big contemporary exhibitions and biennials often focus on popular controversies: the environment, refugees, terrorism, the cultural identity of the artist, and other textual and contextual analyses outside of the works themselves, with insufficient attention to artists and art practice in themselves. Therefore, the question raised by our exhibition is also for the contemporary art world in general. 58

fact magazine

As an artist, who or what inspires you to continue producing art? Myself. It is from myself that endless desire to create, to perform, to answer, and to reflect on life and society is generated. All of these artistic productivities happen because I have the desire. What do you think of Qatar’s arts scene? From my understanding, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa’s vision is to bring the best and most energetic artists in our time to Qatar, to dialogue with this country’s culture. Again, from my perspective, Her Excellency’s goal would be to help Qatar’s art and culture reflect on its own heritage while actively looking outward into the world and starting to participate on a global stage one step at a time.

“The exhibition doesn’t make a statement that contemporary Chinese art is innovative or has artistic merit, but rather it raises an issue: it is necessary for us to discuss individual artist’s creative practice.”

This is the reason why Qatar has in recent years become a point of attention for the rest of the world. What seems more important to me is that the momentum is not generated by the hustle and bustle of commercial art fairs, but a series of exhibitions, cultural exchange programmes and symposia planned one after another, with the intention to initiate a meaningful, indepth, and sustainable conversation with the rest of the world. When you’re working on a piece, how do you know when to stop and when it is finished? This is a great question. In fact, it is often the hardest thing for an artist to know the most ideal point to stop. And the ability to know this most ideal point is often not acquired by experience, but a gift. Once – while still living in Japan – I built a bamboo bridge from a kindergarten, crossing the wall and arriving at Aoyoma Cemetery on the other side. Curator Jan Hoet kept reminding me that he thought the bridge was too perfect, overdone, and as a result did not look like an artwork any more. But when Jan came to inspect the bridge after it was completed, he walked on the unstable structure and felt very nervous. I had to give him a hand in the end while reassuring him that the bridge wouldn’t collapse. After he crossed the bridge, he padded me on the shoulder and said “good, good good.” To him, the sense of fear and uncertainty when crossing the bridge revealed the tension in the work. ➻

Otherwise, a pretty bridge would be too stiff and uninteresting. This example is to show that artworks cannot stop at a point of total perfection; it needs to leave room for the feeling of unsettledness to be generated. The Sky Ladder that you created last year went viral – tell us more about the work behind it – and how did it make you feel to get such a positive, global reaction? I have had the idea of creating a ladder to the sky since the late nineties, a ladder that allows me to have an eternal dialogue with the universe. When I finally realised Sky Ladder on Huiyu

Island in my hometown Quanzhou last year, it was offered as a gift for my 100-year-old grandmother, my parents and family, and my hometown. We did not obtain official permit, and so were not able to invite an audience beyond my family and the few dozens of residents on the island. However, a cell phone video leaked onto the internet and allowed tens of millions of people to see it! This introduced me to the world of social media, and how vast and powerful it is. It also made me realise that the key to the audience is grounded in the artwork’s innate power: whether the work can connect to and move people. To light up people’s imagination of soaring into the sky, an artist’s emotional gift for his 100-year-old grandma - it was these basic human desires and sentiments that touched the viewers. ✤ GO: What About The Art? “The benefit of living in the Middle East has encouraged me to be influenced by my local environment and develop my painting style into more Arabesque pattern styles and experiment with more abstracted views of the Doha skyline,”

S

tephen Watkins has always been more of a technical drawer. From the age of 10, he was sure that his future lay in architecture and designing buildings. “I remember I used to design houses on a drawing board and loved doing all the architectural plans and elevations,” Stephen recalls. “I’ve always been reasonably good at art and I studied A levels in the subject. Unfortunately I didn’t get very good grades as I was always more interested in the technical side rather than the free flowing styles that most artists used,” he adds. “I remember my Art teacher telling me to stop being so technical and be more free and expressional in my art.” It was in his mid-twenties when Stephen explored his art teacher’s advice, and

combined his professional freehand skills with his love of art, something that also grew out of spending the evening doing some painting with his wife, Verity, when nothing good was on the TV! I produced a couple of pieces of our local skyline (Portsmouth UK) with vibrant background colours,” Stephen says. “I never displayed my early work and I was surprised when one day our neighbour came round saw the painting and immediately wanted to buy it. With that encouragement I decided to work up more paintings based on a similar theme. “One day when I was at work my wife secretly took a few of my paintings down to a local gallery – a couple of weeks later I found out that they had all been sold,” he continues. “From that day forward I embraced the style of my painting and

ARTS INTERVIEW

focused more time on producing more pieces.” Stephen, with his family, moved to Qatar in 2009, and saw this life change as the perfect opportunity to develop his artistic style. Stephen explains: “Doha has one of the best skylines and I love using and experimenting with vivid colours, along with my technical style, to depict landscapes and structures. This contrast works well and allows me to work with the fluidity of painting along with the more structured side of architectural drawing. “The benefit of living in the Middle East has encouraged me to be influenced by my local environment and develop my painting style into more Arabesque pattern styles and experiment with more abstracted views of the Doha skyline,” he adds. Stephen’s solo exhibition, currently displays around 20 of his pieces, both older pieces and new ones, at the newly created arts space The Corridor, in Grand Hyatt Doha. “This exhibition has given me a great opportunity to expose my work to a greater audience and not just the expat community,” Stephen says. “The range of work depicts the style of my work from my early years to more recent experimental pieces. The exhibition shows a story of my time in Doha and how I have evolved as an artist whilst being influenced by my cultural surroundings.” ➻ THE CORRIDOR

The Corridor is an initiative by Grand Hyatt Doha in partnership with Australian artist; Pip Hoy to offer a unique gallery space for locally based artists who wish to exhibit their work to the Doha public as well as international visitors alike. The gallery also aims to support local artists whilst simultaneously raising awareness for the charity, Room To Read. Room To Read is committed to funding education for children in third world countries. The goal of Grand Hyatt Doha is to raise enough funds to purchase a school library. With this goal in mind, all profits from artwork sales will be donated to Room To Read. fact magazine

ARTS interview

“With my paintings, I am trying to portray an alternative side of art – one that steps away from its more traditional style to a more contemporary and technical route,” he tells us. “Doha is changing everyday – it’s modern, contemporary and infused with old traditional culture and styles. I’m trying to bring this all together and voice that they can be infused as one.” Stephen’s tools and techniques involve, mainly, acrylic on canvas, which, as a flexible material allows him to use heavy free lines and fine detailing. “I would love to start experimenting in other styles and methods,” he says. “My paintings are getting bigger and more detailed and I feel other tools and materials could enhance my style. Getting into sculpture would be a dream, especially to work with metal to create abstract architectural style sculptures.” It is very clear that, for Stephen, his biggest inspiration is his family and next it’s his surroundings here in Doha. “Painting is a great way to relax and because my wife paints as well we can spend evenings together instead of just sitting in front of the television for a few hours,” he explains. “We have three children aged four, six and eight, which takes up a lot of our time, however, they love to sit and watch us paint and I hope that that they learn a lot of the skills just by seeing us working on a piece of art. Sometimes we will give them a canvas and we will all sit down as a family and just paint,” Stephen adds. Stephen’s work is bold, vibrant, and carries an architectural twist that is quite rare in contemporary artworks. He has a genuine appetite for learning and creating art, with his own style, and sharing it with the world. This, art enthusiasts, is the epitome of a modern-day creative with a true passion – and, now, you can go and view the artistic flair for yourself at The Corridor. ✤ GO: Stephen Watkins’ solo exhibition will be on display at The Corridor, Grand Hyatt Doha until March 19. Big Screen Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice What’s it about: We’re in Metropolis and the battle of the heroes is on as Batman takes on Superman, fearing that some actions are going unchecked. Whilst they’re busy fighting, Lex Luthor creates a new threat – Doomsday – and the two heroes are forced to work together to save the city.

Director: Zack Snyder cast: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams Why it’s worth watching? This film, or more so the concept, has been a long time coming. The project was first announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2013, and it has since been developed by a mega-talented team. You’ve got Man of Steel director, Zack Snyder at the helm and with the help of The Dark Knight and Argo screenwriters – David Goyer and Chris Terrio, respectively – it’s no wonder that Warner is nervous about the $400 million plus spend on the film. And we haven’t even got to the cast list yet. Money aside, the plot pits DC Comics’ three biggest heroes against each other, and the story is expected to lay groundwork for multiple DC films, including a Justice League movie. For us, if it lives up to the high standard of any DC Comics’ TV shows (hello, Arrow and The Flash fans) then Warner will be laughing all the way to the bank. If not, we’ll probably just like it for the beautiful cast parading in superhero outfits.

T.L.O.P THE LIFE OF PABLO By Kanye West

Even though it was pulled from being released on Apple Music, it’s SO worth getting your hands on Yeezy’s new record. Whether you love him, hate him, think he’s a little eccentric, or that he’s the biggest celebrity snob (let’s be honest, Kanye is his own biggest marketing tool, positive and negative) it’s undeniable that Kanye makes good music. His previous albums, Yeezus, gave this one plenty to live up to. Thankfully, T.L.O.P aka The Life of Pablo is a solid follow-up; Wolves is a bass-filled, chilledout track featuring vocals from Sia and Vic Mensa, whereas Fade is a complete 180 - upbeat and much more punchy. No More Parties in LA is a favourite from the album, taking us back to Yeezy’s original sound and showcasing his lyricism, perfectly. After much hype, and a Twitter spat with Wiz Khalifa (we have an inkling it was a publicity stunt), we’re happy to say that this album was entirely worth the long, long wait.

POP I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It

After the disappearance of his brother during a filming expedition near Mount Everest, Charles Whittington takes a dangerous and illegal journey from India to Tibet in the hope of finding his sibling. Along the way he encounters a woman with a deadly secret which sees the novel take a thrilling turn. The Rose of Tibet is Lionel Davidson’s second novel, although you would never believe it; he writes with the experience of a seasoned novelist, yet keeps the flare and excitement that comes with a junior such as himself. This has to be one of the best thrillers we’ve encountered this year!

By The 1975 After a slightly confusing Twitter post last year instigating that the band were about to part ways (thankfully a huge misunderstanding!) The 1975 is back with a new album and a new sound. Yes, it’s the longest album name ever, and the music is just as catchy. Love Me and UGH! are firmly pop records, rather than the heavy guitar sounds that we were used to from the previous album, and has plenty of psychedelic elements throughout. Although, The

our favourite from the album as it’s full of guitar

If the name Shay Butler rings a bell, it’s probably because you’ve come across it on YouTube. By 30, Shay weighed 300lbs and decided to get in shape and document his 100lb weight loss on YouTube. In this book, he tackles the debate of whether a parent’s weight issue is mirrored in their children by documenting a 30-day weight-loss and fitness regime taken on by both him and his eldest son in order to maintain his new weight and help improve his son’s health. Both funny and compelling, this account shows it’s never too late to change your eating habits.

and familiar riffs taking us right back to The 1975 we know and love. With their new sound, this might be their make or break album, and although we’re fans, we have to say that we can’t help but wish they’d injected a little more of their original style back into their new work.

“Yes, it’s the longest album name ever, and the music is just as catchy.”

Paradise Perfect Scenic, stunning, otherworldly, magical, breathtaking and amazing are words not strong enough to describe the Seychelles. ifferent sources give you different answers when you search for how many countries there are on planet earth – but there are 197 independent nations – and as far as bucket lists go, the Seychelles should definitely make your top 10 destinations to visit before you die. Etihad Airways and Seychelles Tourism Board joined forces and took hospitality to a whole new level when FACT magazine accepted their generous offer to traipse the luscious islands. Admittedly we thought the Seychelles was purely a honeymoon destination where all there is to do is sunbathe, drink colourful cocktails, sunbathe some more and enjoy sprawling sunsets with your love. That may be so, but there’s so much more to the Seychelles than the postcard stereotype. Over the years the growing number of hotel resorts alongside the influx of tourism has put the Indian Ocean jewel at the heart of the international travel map. Travellers from all walks of life – lovers, soul-searchers, botanists and families come to this enchanting destination. We are positive that one of the 116 coral and granite islands will bring you a sense of peace and calm to your soul – that or the beauty will just blow your socks off. Situated in the western Indian Ocean near the equator, the climate in the archipelago is delightfully tropical; the perfect combination of sun and rain that will not leave you too bored of either. You’ll find that June, July, and August have the least amount of rain and is therefore the best time to visit – especially, for a relaxing retreat after a school year, with the family. Yet, with temperatures ranging between 27 and 33 degrees Celsius, the Seychelles is never out of season. We took to the main island of Mahé - defined by its whitesand beaches and lush green nature. Victoria, the capital, is the epicenter of all that’s lively and touristy. The elegant replica of London’s Big Ben clock makes the heart of the city a must see. From there, walking down the busy streets of Victoria is a pleasure, as long as you carry your trusted umbrella - provided by your hotel. There are plenty of shops and kiosks to choose from, but if I had to pin down the best, the busy market of Sir Selwyn-Clarke is ideal for a good bargain. ➻

Tropical fruits, exotic vegetables, and lots of fresh fish are sold side by side with a local variety of spices such as cinnamon, bay-leafs, nutmeg, vanilla, and their famous homemade curry sauce. From beachwear to handmade accessories and souvenirs, everything is inspired by the azure waters and tropical treasures. There’s a plethora of items to choose from: corals, shark tooth necklaces, coconut shell bracelets, coconut oil, soap, magnets and key chains, there are so many beautiful souvenirs to gift your family and friends. We were eager to see Le Coco Do Mer, the eroticallyshaped fruit that represents the country’s trademark forbidden fruit. It once grew only on two tiny isles and is now protected by the government. It’s fairly expensive and to take one back home, you require an export license. And when in the Seychelles, a fishing trip is in order. It’s super easy to arrange – either independently or through your hotel, it’s absolutely worth it – and OH EM GEE the taste of that fresh catch grilled on the shores of the nearby island is just heavenly. Be sure that your local companion knows his way around the spices! If you get the chance to visit Eden Island, the only man-made island in the country, you must try dining in one of its luxury restaurants. Foodies and the culinary curious, like us, will not be disappointed. Surprisingly we found the Seychelles’ curry to be very different from the Indian and Thai variety. The octopus curry is a traditional dish that you may want to try; but if you are not up to the challenge, you may want to ask the chef to go easy on the chili! But no worries, there’s always a hot mix of grill items for you to try if the aforementioned doesn’t work out. Whatever your reason for visiting the Seychelles – you’ve just got hitched, you want a mini break from city life, you want to top that tan, you want to immerse yourself in the wonders of nature or you want to indulge in a gastronomic journey of spice and more spice – there’s so much to love here. Not to mention, there’s heaps of luxury to be found everywhere you go – namely in those relaxing massages where you lie in wafts of lemongrass and ginger essences or when you sit under a full moon with a passion fruit cocktail in your hand. Perfection? We think so! That’s why we urge you to tick the Seychelles off your list. While we were lapping it up in the Seychelles we got to stay in two luxury resorts, lucky us. ➻ fact magazine

Set amongst the most picturesque of places, the Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort boasts mountain, beach, sea and lush green views. FACT’s Badir Bechara went to Muscat, Oman to find out exactly how this special place can help to nurture your heart and soul… This spring, the Fact team was invited to one of the most beautiful countries in the GCC – Oman. Known for its varied landscape, Oman offers visitors rocky visuals with the momentous Al Hajar Mountains; whilst the country is hugged by a stunning coastline and great beaches; and for those who venture further East, you’ll pass the land of the Wahiba Sands inhabited by Bedouins, and further south you’ll end up in the Dhofar region, full of its own tropical charm. Our trip, however, was to the capital city of Muscat, for a stay at the sprawling Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort. It all began at the lovely Qatar Airways Business Class lounge at Hamad International Airport. As far as pre-flight services go, this place had every box ticked – it was quiet, spacious, well-equipped with enough gadget portals and comfy seating areas, and the food selection was great too. Qatar Airways’ first and business class service is really top of the line; from the second we boarded the plane, the flight attendants went all out to make our journey as relaxed and enjoyable as possible. Again, the menu is fabulous with a real gourmet in the air experience, while the entertainment selection is impressive with all the latest, and all-time favourite, films and tons of TV episodes, music and games – we definitely weren’t bored on this two-hour journey! If it’s the VIP treatment you’re after, it’s the VIP treatment you’ll get 82

HOTEL HOTSPOT with the Qatar Airways experience. We landed in Muscat in the evening. The weather was warmer than Doha, but still a very pleasant temperature. The lovely people at Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort arrange a transfer to the hotel, a drive which really gives you a quick insight into the city, and certainly leaves a lasting first impression. We drove for around 35 minutes, past neighbourhoods, on the main highways, besides the mountains and through the old gates of Muscat, to arrive at the tranquil Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort. At this point, you’ll forget you’re even in the GCC as the contrast of the rugged mountains with the sound of the ocean waves, really seems a world away from everyday life in busy Doha.

A Luxury Retreat

The Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort is a dream. It’s got every kind of scenery your eyes could crave; the rocky mountains, the blue sea, the sandy beach, and the plush greenery – could this be the ultimate regional resort?

The Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort is a dream. It’s got every kind of scenery your eyes could crave; the rocky mountains, the blue sea, the sandy beach, and the plush greenery – could this be the ultimate regional resort? With a total of 640 rooms located across three hotels; Al Waha, Al Bandar, and Al Husn hotels. There’s everything from classic rooms to VIP suites, and everything in between. This property has every type of traveller covered – families, couples, groups of friends, solo visitors – you’ll all find a room type and package to suit your holiday needs. For us, it was a combination of the excellent location, fantastic amenities, the friendly staff and attentive service, that made our stay in a Deluxe Sea View room at Al Husn, so incredibly perfect. The room is like a little piece of paradise with Arabian décor, a huge bed, walk-in closet, enormous bathroom, nice working desk, and all the other regulars which you’d expect from five-star accommodation. This included: a flat screen TV with a good variety of channels, a wooden fully-stocked mini bar, a safety deposit box, luxurious bath robes and amenities, and it even had a wireless boss speaker box for you to take around the big room. We indulged in having a cute terrace area and spent much time admiring the sea views from it. In the evenings, it was the perfect spot to watch the sun go down and the starry night sky to reign over Oman.

Gastronomic Delights Food, for us, is one of the most important factors when travelling, and Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort did not disappoint. ➻ fact magazine

HOTEL HOTSPOT There’s a total of 22 dining spots to choose from, so it’s safe to say that there’s something for everyone. Try al fresco dining when the weather permits – nothing beats breakfast, lunch or dinner with beautiful views. Our first dinning experience was at Al Sultanah Restaurant for breakfast, with a range of healthy buffet items and an excellent a la carte menu – make sure you try the amazing eggs benedict. For lunch, head to Al Tanoor Restaurant for an outdoor experience with a gorgeous view. The international buffet here will fill you up! B.A.B lounge is the perfect spot to chill and enjoy a relaxing drink before heading for dinner at the romantic Bait Al Bahr. The fine dining, seafood restaurant has a range of fresh catch of the day and a long list of a la carte choices – delicious!

Fabulous Facilities This resort has every adventure and watersport that you’d expect to find in this part of Oman. Paddle boarding, kayaking, waterskiing, the lazy river, a catamaran cruise – you name it, and they’ve got it. We’d highly recommend venturing out to explore Muscat’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ad Dimaniyat Island or opt for watching the turtles on the beach – the hotel can arrange this for you with Ocean Blue Company, who also offer an awesome sunset ride that is an absolute must. After a long day of activities in and out of the resort, there is no better place to pamper and relax than Chi Spa. The Spa facilities of the resort are just amazing; spacious changing rooms and a beautiful walk to get into your personal village for the treatment. We had the Vitality Treatment, designed to strengthen the body, it’s a gentle soothing massage that combines elements of Swedish, shiatsu and reflexology. Honestly, it was one of the best spa treatments we’ve ever had, and left us feeling brand new! We could write many more pages gushing over how mesmerising the Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort is, but we’d rather let you book a stay and find out for yourself! ✤ 84

CITY RIDES

The McLaren 650S was one of the most exquisite supercars we’ve ever had the pleasure of driving. We were therefore worried that the 570S might pale in comparison. We needn’t have been concerned…

88

fact magazine

O

ne of the latest additions to the McLaren line-up, the McLaren 570S falls into the company’s entry-level Sports Series, alongside the 540C. This is below the Super Series, boasting the 650S and 675LT, and the Ultimate Series consisting solely of the mighty P1. Now, when we say ‘entry-level’, don’t take that to mean ‘cheap’ or ‘boring’. The biggest mistake you could make when looking at this car is to consider it a ‘baby McLaren’. We’re still talking about a QR750,000 vehicle here, with a mighty 3.8l twin-turbo V8 with 570PS (562hp) and 600Nm torque. You’re also looking at a 0-100km/h time of 3.2 seconds (only 0.2 slower than the 650S), a 0-200km/h time of 9.5 seconds, and a top speed of 328km/h. These figures put the 570S on a par with the likes of the Lamborghini Huracan, the Porsche

CITY RIDES

911 Turbo S or the Audi R8 V10. So as you can see, a ‘baby’ it is not… So what does one do when one is handed the keys to a McLaren in the UAE? Well, one takes a drive up one of the world’s best new roads, doesn’t one? So, off to Jebel Jais it was, and a glorious twisting mountain road that snakes its way up towards the country’s highest point on a rainy, misty day that lent some sense of drama to the occasion. Though a little more concentration was needed on the slightly damp road, in the 570S it felt truly enjoyable, and not at all scary. It doesn’t have the furious, blistering speed of the 650S, granted, but don’t for a second think it’s a soft touch either. The 570S is seriously fast, but in a way that is manageable. With the 650S, as capable as it was, with that kind of ferocious power, you kind of felt like you were hanging on for dear life. The 570S, on the other hand, is more accessible to the layman, with enough power to thrill, and take you to the outer limits of your comfort zone, but never beyond into the dark regions of terror! Amazingly, despite the fact that the 570S now features more conventional springs and roll-bar suspension rather than the interlinked hydraulic suspension as seen on the 650, it still has the almost supernatural agility, balance and precision of its elder sibling – it is still a McLaren, after all – and this allows you to really extract the utmost from the roaring V8. The difference comes in laying down the power on the exits. It only took a very short time for me to decide I wasn’t man enough for the 650S on track mode (no ESC). The 570S, on the other hand, was far more within my skill set, and flooring the throttle and correcting the power slides with a flick of the wheel became almost a routine, albeit a hugely exhilarating one. Like the 650S, it also features excellently weighted hydraulic steering with good feedback that gives you almost cerebral control over the car. It’s just awesome, awesome fun. ➻

CITY RIDES

Not every day involves a mountain drive, though, so how is the 570 on normal roads? In our humble opinion, the 570S is better as a daily driver than the 650S, as the interior is that little bit more accommodating, and they’ve cut a section out of the carbon tub to allow for easier ingress/egress. It’s also got a new ‘hanging’ centre console instead of the ‘flying’ one, which 90

fact magazine

has a gap in the middle so that you can access the cup holders more easily, rather than having to reach awkwardly around the back of the one in the 650S. The Iris infotainment system has been improved slightly, and works better than it ever has before, and the new completely digital instrument cluster looks superb, changing configuration depending which settings you have the car in.

Overall, the 570S feels more usable than the 650S in almost every way, even though it also feels less extreme in every way as well. If you’re looking for that vicious thrill that only a supercar can give you, the 650S is what you want. However, if you’re looking for an awesome sports car that can realistically function as a daily driver, then the 570S is small compromise! ✤

App-licious Today’s tech-savvy generation of smartphones and tablets means the world is at your fingertips, literally! FACT has three great apps to download for your device, keeping you plugged-in to all the best techie help for every area of life...

The Room 3 The third installment of this superb puzzle game, The Room 3 boasts the same intricate mind-bending puzzles, excellent animation, eerie ambiance and mysterious storyline as the first two. However, this time the developers have taken things a step further, with alternate storyline endings depending on certain choices you make throughout the game. For newbies, the premise is that you’re sucked into the magical world of the Craftsman, who has devised a series of diabolically complicated puzzle machines you must solve to progress and escape. If you’re hearing about this game for the first time, the best news is that there are three versions for you to get stuck into. The worst news is that you can kiss goodbye to any free moments you have in your life for the next month or so… Each one will cost you a few bucks, but the five-star reviews in each case should convince you that they’re worth the money.

Kitchen Stories A must for foodies, Kitchen Stories is an app that boasts everything you need to improve your cooking skills and general knowledge about food, cooking and cuisine around the world. It boasts a vast library of recipes with images and easy step-by-step instructions. The app also allows you to automatically generate shopping lists based on recipe choice to plan meals easily, and there are even how-to videos to watch as well. New content is added constantly, so you’ll never run out of things to try, and it includes vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free recipes, as well as themes such as Smoothies and Grill Specials. The culinary world is truly your oyster! And the best thing about it? It’s free…

SimCity BuildIt The hugely popular city-building game comes to handheld devices with SimCity BuildIt. Fans of the franchise can now play the game on the go whenever you have a few free moments, and much of the PC’s game features are there. However, the downside is that adapting this notoriously resource-heavy game for smaller processors also means that many of the features are not. And, even though it has been simplified for the app, it still absolutely rinses processors and battery life. Upsides of the app is that it’s constantly updated with real-world relevant features such as Valentine’s Day, for example, enriching the experience significantly. It is still a highly enjoyable game, so just make sure you always have a charger handy, and get building. fact magazine

Slinky Slip On

Rainbow Clashes

It may just be Spring’s most sensual suggestion, taking lingerie out of the “underwear” category and onto the street as “outerwear” this season. That’s right, the slip dress is back and it’s slinkier, silkier and sultrier than ever. Some were trimmed and adorned with scalloped lace details, others carried a chiffon charm, while some designers went all-out with a layered look. This earthy elegant look was too good to sleep in, anyway. We welcome the slip on with open arms.

Vivid colours were all the fashion rage on the SS16 runways with sweet and sour shades being worked into a single look. Designers proposed their pantone hits in starburst and acid brights, some with graphic effects like patchwork details and others with the most revered design codes with clashing shards of fabrics to give a crash and repair attitude. Think dramatic fuchsia pinks, and deep oranges and purples!

Mirror Shine

Graphic Lines

SS16 fabrics are going to be shinier, brighter and cooler than ever before. Designers have tested the fashion waters with everything from embellished classic sweaters with broken mirror pieces, to futuristic ruched foil dresses, and grungy gowns. This look works best in the evening, when you can don the brightest sequins and full-on gem-stone shine for unapologetic glamour – go on, have your high-impact metallic moment.

The super stripe struck once more on the SS16 runways as a majority of designers went horizontal, vertical, thick and thin, experimenting with chopped, curled and scattered lines in many hues or monochromatic. The stripe proved to be oh so right as it emerged from the fray of Spring prints as a clear victor on the catwalks – this season, you’ll be hard-pressed to shop without seeing the sheer graphic appeal of a good striped design. Going Green

Oriental Influence

Bottle green, military green, paintbox brights, and shades of lime; in all its glory, green was all the rage on the men’s SS16 runway. There are no rules with this one – go delicately light, strongly bold, or mix and match layers of green for a trendy look. We’re thinking generously cut, well-tailored pieces like trousers, shirting and outerwear to nail the all-green style. Opt for pieces in sea and jade greens to keep your Spring wardrobe looking fresh.

This season saw designers looking eastward towards China and Japan for style influence, tapping into the rich aesthetic heritage of the two nations. Oriental prints and fabrics play an important role in relaxed styling, mixed with sportswear silhouettes like the bomber jacket in luxe fabrics and intricate embroidery. This is a unique and daring trend that, if worn right, could make you the showstopper in any fashion crowd.

Top Pockets

Psychedelic Style

For a more masculine military-inspired look, go for pocket detail this season. Pockets took centre stage and became the hallmark of function for Spring; you’ll find them on everything from the outside of coats and jackets, cargo pants, gilets and even tank suits, giving the illusion of an intrepid explorer while still actually being very practical. This is the fantastical man pocket - the perfect example of both style and substance.

Whether it’s prints, fabrics or colours, things got very vibrant on the men’s SS16 runways. Some designers referenced the 80s with bright “rave-ish” hues, while others went for straight up optical illusion prints and elegant botanical riffs. Wear this look head-to-toe for maximum impact or with either a smart waistcoat or tailored trousers for a high fashion look. For those who dare, try colour blocking with many tones for extra on-trend points. fact magazine

Go all out with 60’s-inspired a-line dresses, planted with full blooms or bring the print into the new season with a shirt dress. a statement look sees floral patterns on jumpsuits, with lace-up heels for a stylish ensemble.

STYLE

Denim Decoded No spring style is complete without a touch of denim; in all cuts and shades, denim returns to the forefront of menswear this season. With a 90s throwback taking shape, a true blue look has never been more on point. Oversized denim jackets are layered over lumberjack shirts and white tees, and faded tones bring a thrifty feel. Skinny jeans are still in, but a looser tapered fit is introduced. Team with a bomber jacket and Chelsea brogues for a truly stylish outfit.

Spice Market Supper Club “The venue is known to be dark and elegant, a place you come once a month to dine at. So my idea was to bring more traffic and make it more fun for people to experience Spice Market on a daily basis.

- Chef Xiaomeng Liu fact magazine

CHEF’S TABLE

It’s no secret that dining in Qatar is a competitive business. However, if you have a venue that stays true to its roots with great food and innovative concepts, you’re already half way there. One such place is the hugely popular Spice Market at W Doha Hotel & Residences – it’s oriental interiors, exquisite menu and reliable tasty fare has diners flocking here in their droves. Under its new appointed manager, Nebi Ozan Ozdemir, FACT heads to the restaurant to experience the new Supper Club promotion and meet Chef De Cuisine, Xiaomeng Liu, the man behind this awesome idea…

Chef Xiaomeng Liu has established himself as an expert in the culinary world. With extraordinary experience in professional cooking, he has created a mark in the industry with worldly knowledge and an impeccable taste for flavours. His sophistication and desire to constantly learn has proven his love and appreciation for food. As Chef De Cuisine at Spice Market, it was Chef Xiaomeng who came up with the idea for the brand new, and already popular, Supper Club. “I started the concept and the whole reason was to give Spice Market a twist,” he says. “The venue is known to be dark and elegant, a place you come once a month to dine at. So my idea was to bring more traffic and make it more fun for people to experience Spice Market on a daily basis,” Chef Xiaomeng adds. “It’s great food and great quality for a cheaper price.” That, in fact, is correct. The Supper Club menu is made up of four appetisers, five mains, and four desserts. You pay a cool QR100 and get to select one delicious item from each, for a fabulous and filling three-course meal. For QR20 extra you’ll get a glass of vino too. How good is that? Chef Xiaomeng’s career began in Australia where he studied commercial cookery and hospitality management at Carrick Institute of Education, and his work has since taken him from Australia to Guangzhou and Macau, and now 108 fact magazine

Doha, the place he has called home for a year. “I love it here,” he says. “ Spice Market is my baby, my everything.” Back to Supper Club. From the appetisers we share the Spicy Thai fried Chicken Wings with Mango and Mint. In true South East Asian-style, the chicken is tender and the skin crispy and glazed to perfection. Then there’s the King Crab Fritters which taste delightful with the Curry Lime Mayonnaise, and if you’re after something for refreshing, try the Green Papaya Salad with its tangy kick from the Spicy Cashew Vinaigrette – mind blowing! For mains, seafood lovers will adore the generous helping of Roasted Hammour with Malaysian Chilli sauce and Thai Basil, whilst any vegetarians at the table tuck into the Pad Thai Vegetables, and/or the Ginger Fried Rice – both are packed with punchy flavours of the East. Our two favourites, however, had to be the Grilled Strip Steak with

Menu Spicy Thai fried Chicken Wings King Crab Fritters Grilled Strip Steak Char-Grilled Chicken Japanese Cheesecake Ovaltime Kulfi

Coriander Pesto, and the Char-Grilled Chicken with Kumquat Lemon Grass Dressing. The former is juicy and wellcomplemented with the pesto; and the latter has a beautiful smoky taste which is given a lovely tropical flavour from the lemon grass - both winning dishes! For dessert, the Japanese Cheesecake is a must, whilst the Ovaltine Kulf i with caramelised banana is every sweeteaters dream. There’s also Miso Caramel Pudding and a selection of ice cream or sorbets to choose from – you’re really spoilt for choice! We love that the Supper Club opens up a way for foodies to enjoy a fine dining atmosphere and high-quality food, any time of the week, without the Lamborghini price tags that are often associated with five-star cuisine. In fact, Spice Market’s usual menu is also very reasonably-priced for what you get. We’d recommend making a reservation for Supper Club, because it was packed with hungry, happy diners when we arrived – something, we’re sure, is going to continue as long as the promotion is available. ✤ GO: Supper Club at W Doha Hotel & Residences runs across a number of the hotel’s dining outlets, daily, except Fridays, from 5pm to 7pm. Each venue has a tailor-made menu, highlighting its own cuisine. Call 4453 5000 for reservations and more information.

A Prime Dining Experience One steakhouse spot continues to cause a buzz in Doha’s culinary scene. FACT finds out exactly what it is about Prime, InterContinental Doha The City that foodies have fallen in love with‌

VENUE REVIEW

I

nterContinental Doha The City houses some superb restaurants, not to mention Strata, the upbeat spot for party aficionados. From Asian cuisine to French, the popular Friday Brunch and more, the prominent hotel has it all packed with an array of selections. And yet, Prime, the hotel’s steakhouse, just manages to stand out on the food radar, for us. Bold, timeless and with a memorable setting, Prime offers flexible dining options where guests may choose to experience a live grill show kitchen, or, perhaps, an interactive dining area, or a cosy and intimate dinner – this venue has it all. FACT couldn’t resist such temptation (especially, being meat lovers) so off we went to tuck into some steak. We test the newly arrived Charolais beef from France. Let us explain, for those who wonder what Charolais is, it’s a famous French breed cattle which is one of the prides of the Burgundy region, which also happens to be one of the most refined gastronomy regions in France. This is one of the rare breeds that even carries an AOC label – a French food-labeling term that protects the style, ingredients, and origin of a product. The prestigious AOC certification not only guarantees that the beef is originated from the Charolles area, it also means more tenderness and juiciness for all the meat lovers out there. InterContinental Doha The City is now the only one in 112 fact magazine

town to offer Charolais meat – that’s one more reason to get down to Prime! We’re excited to try the Beef Tartare to our great surprise, it was served in the most traditional way. The waiter will mix it right in front of you and adjust the spice or acidity according to your preference. Wow! They’ll even add some cognac, the most traditional of all French spirits, if that’s what your taste buds are calling out for. The tartare tasted incredible – well beyond expectations. We also tried the Quinoa and Lobster Salad, a micro leaf salad with seasoned citrus and bisque dressing. The lobster

was perfect to taste and the quinoa gave the whole dish some life and texture – a yummy start. Next, from the grill came a delicious and juicy tenderloin piece. IT.WAS.HEAVENLY. We can’t describe how scrumptious the meat tasted, let’s just say, it would make our list of top five steaks to try in Doha. Alongside this, we were digging into Baked Goat Cheese with fennel, rosemary, honey, Mesclun greens and tomato confit, on bread. This was a rustic dish, with contrasting flavours that, when pared together, tasted delicious. Prime truly gives fine dining an elevated meaning. We’re convinced that every diner in Doha will find something mouthwatering to fall in love with at this restaurant – just as we fell for the steak. ✤ GO: Prime is open daily for dinner, from 6pm until 11pm. trailed off to Marriott Marquis City Center Doha for this month’s fun-filled culinary day. This time, New York Steakhouse was my choice. If you haven’t heard of this fabulous venue, then listen up! It’s one of our favourite steakhouses in Doha and offers up excellent food in an intimate setting. Take it from me; they know how to make an awesome steak. Chef de Cuisine, David Dahlhaus shared with me a few tips and tricks whilst we prepared some delectable dishes from the restaurant’s upcoming menu. We started off with the Half Roasted Corn Fed Chicken, with green beans, fondant potato and chicken jus (QR150). A dish the chef says is “a very comfortable one.” We started off with the chicken, which was marinated for over 24 hours. We fried the chicken first and later placed it in the oven for around 10 minutes – this gives the yummiest results! David lets me take charge as I add some onions and healthy green beans to the frying pan, and we let them turn a nice cooked colour and texture. We also add potato into the mix and some butter - an ingredient that Chef David loves to cook with. When it’s all ready, we add some parsley as garnish. Next, we begin to prep the exquisite Mixed Grill. The dish is made up of the famously tender junee lamb rack, 116 fact magazine

ratatouille, 100g Australian Black Angus fillet, fried quail egg, quail breast, mash potato and some apple (QR245). I started with the meal’s quail breast, placing it to fry in olive oil and butter. “We do this to give it a nice buttery flavour,” Chef David says. As if the entire experience wasn’t cool enough, we proceeded to give the quail breast a crispy bite by torching it a little – beautiful! Moving on to prep the lamb; it was sprinkled with salt and pepper and pan-fried. Tabasco, herbs

and a few other condiments were added, all for a flavourful mix. Together, all the different components of the Mixed Grill are a delightful, and very innovative, feast. Our third dish was by far one of the most interesting plates of food that I’ve ever cooked on Cucina de Badir – the Fillet Tasting Trio. This is made up of a meaty piece each of 100g Argentinian beef, 100g Australian Black Angus and 100g Prime USA (QR275) – all in one go. An easy dish to prep; all you need,

Cucina de badir

along with the prized, quality beef, is red onions, vinegar, tomatoes, crisp potato chips and glazed shallot. For all my epicurean friends out there, this dish will certainly please all the real meat-lovers out there. New York Steakhouse is definitely stepping up its foodie game to a completely new height of culinary surprises and clever, tasty dishes. Chef David Dahlhaus and his team will surely have something exciting for you to try on the new menu, along with all the usual favourites! Good food is what this place is all about and we’d highly recommend you savour the sizzling tastes of this steakhouse asap! That’s it folks, hasta luego en la próxima Cucina De Badir. ✤

Chef Zarmig Halladjian

Executive Chef and Director of Operations at Mamig Armenian Lebanese Restaurant, Katara Cultural Village & Aziza Lebanese Seafood Restaurant, Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha.

Doha Insider

What do you love about being a chef in Doha?

Your favourite cultural hotspot in Doha & why...

I have travelled to many different countries, but the place that makes my heart beat and makes me feel warm like my mother country, is definitely Doha. The love and respect that I’ve acquired from being a female chef in Qatar makes me more passionate, enthusiastic and who I am today. This is because, with the support of Doha, I have been able to introduce my culture and professionalism in this culinary field. It is also a great challenge competing in a male dominated field. Being a female chef in the hospitality industry is a career that makes me unique and has given me an exceptional and extraordinary treatment.

In less than a decade we all know that Qatar has managed to demonstrate to the world that it is a globally well-known place for cultural spots. Why would I go far when my heart – Mamig – is inside Katara Cultural Village? I chose Katara because it’s the only place that with an open door to Armenian and Lebanese culture, that is Mamig, meaning Grandmother and mother in Armenian. Aside from that, Katara has recreational and cultural attractions, a wide choice of restaurants, and an art gallery with many exhibitions.

ONE PROFESSIONAL & ONE PERSONAL goal for 2016...

For me, the sky is the limit. I believe that as a professional in the culinary world, each chef promotes dishes which are native from their homeland through different traditional ways of cooking, and they also presents their artistic style or even preparing fusion recipes to bring it to perfection. My realistic goal for 2016 is to publish more cookbooks and provide innovative and fusion recipes with extensive knowledge to inspire a healthy lifestyle. Personally and professionally, specifically, I always like to be distinctive in high profile that will leave a lifetime trademark to everyone.
