Food and Rendezvous

The only thing I like better than talking about food is eating..” – John Walters

H

ello everyone! I cannot believe we are wrapping up another issue – it seems like it was just a few days ago that I was juggling my first issue but alas, here we are. The Doha weather is still as unpredictable as ever and I am still regretting my wardrobe choices as I go all over town. I’ve been dreaming about the summer and already getting my wardrobe together – ironically, it’s raining outside as I write this. I believe this month was the perfect time to start with round one of building up the summer tan, and so I headed for an unbelievable staycation at Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara, because nothing says summer quite like an island escape that would easily dupe your insta followers to believe that you’re in the Maldives or another faraway destination. Check out how I got on from p48 onwards. So much has been happening here and seeing familiar faces makes this city all the more comfortable and enjoyable to be in. We absolutely loved exploring new places in town, ready to give you recommendations for March. Our daily jaunts took us to some new additions as well as good, classic names as well. We bring to you reviews from Torino Steakhouse, where quality meat is at the forefront of dining (p63); we also dive into Japanese cuisine at Toshi, Doha’s newest foodie venture (p91); and an institution calls us back for a tasting at Bentley’s Grill (p87). I absolutely love it when the job requires you to expand your horizon and meet new people. I’m thanking my lucky stars that I got introduced to Faisal Al Hajri this time. The artist-cum-humanitarian-cum-entrepreneur sat down for an inspiring chat where I learned all about his love of, and unique perspective on, life (p44). I got to sit down with the CEO of the very happening radio station ONE FM, just in time to celebrate the Qatar-India Year of Culture (p46). The pace has been picking up around town and we’re getting even more excited for the FACT Dining Awards Doha, taking place in April. The nominees have started their campaigns and are rallying up attention so make sure that you go ahead and vote for your favourite dining joints on www.fact-magazine.com. And don’t even worry about filling your calendar up this month – we’ve got you covered. Check out our Seven Days of Delicious Dining guide to help you pick all the best and most happening spots around the city to get your fill of epicurean eats (p23). We’ve been going to the cinema a lot, keeping up with E! News and really just getting lost in the pop culture world (zero guilt!). Netflix has become my best friend as I find myself bingeing on series like ‘You’ and the dramas just keep getting better! Valentine’s Day is gone, my roses have welted, and so I’m just looking for more excuses to get myself pampered this month. Let’s hope March sails by smoothly and I get my makeup skills on point for the Dining Awards! Can you tell I’m excited? Till next month, lovelies!☺

REDEFINING DOHA’S NIGHTLIFE If you’ve been living in Doha for a while, chances are that you’ve paid a visit to Society Lounge by Mystique Management. As soon as you enter Doha’s biggest nightlife venue to date, you can feel a distinctive vibe that quickly transports you to a setting similar to any of the famous clubs worldwide. THERE ARE MANY FACTORS THAT contribute to the vibe at Society Lounge, but the most important are the resident DJs behind the decks, who are responsible for creating the energy that brings Society to life. Dimitri Khater, the man firing up the DJ booth known as DIMIX, has been playing records in Society Lounge since it opened its door in 2015 and contributed to shaping the now famous Urban Friday nights. Dimitri kick-started his career in 2005 by making edits to tracks and calling them ‘’Dim Mix’’, eventually coining him his DJ name DIMIX. His career’s highlights include setting the stage with opening sets for renowned artists such as Drake, Pitbull, Tyga, Akon, Nelly, Lil Kim and Sean Paul, to name a few. He also played at Skybar Beirut, O1NE Beirut, O1NE Yas Island in the UAE and hosted his own radio show on NRJ Mastermix (NRJ Lebanon and NRJ Europe). When asked about his experience with Society Lounge, Khater says: “I have been playing at Society since the very first day it opened back in 2015, and I am one of the founders of Urban Friday nights. What I like about working with the Mystique Management team is that they are always open for suggestions 12

fact magazine

and have been exploring all kinds of possibilities for growth in the industry.” Another resident DJ that helped shape the identity of Society Lounge is Steven Rayes. Starting his career in 2008, Steven has played at many international venues, such as Palais Maillot in Paris, Étage Malmö in Sweden, Pier 7 Beirut, Publicity Lebanon, Skybar Beirut, O1NE Beirut and Castle Club Ayia Napa in Cyprus. Known by his characteristic presence on stage, Steven is celebrating three years of making Doha residents dance their way into the weekend. One of the highlights of his time with Society Lounge was the closing night of last season, as it was a night to remember by the crowd and staff alike. Commenting about his experience, Steven Rayes says: “I am proud of where I am in my career thanks to Society and Mystique Management. I trust the team and I am proud of what we have accomplished together since I joined the team.” ✤

Hotel Mumbai WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

There’s amazing action sequences with a hint of comedy. Sidestepping from the traditional origin story concept, this allnew energetic adventure definitely gets a yes from us. – Captain Marvel

After a series of terrifying terror attacks take place all over the city of Mumbai, things will never be the same for the people of India. The film follows the heartbreaking story about the victims and survivors of the 2008 Mumbai attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

DIRECTOR: Anthony Maras CAST: Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Anupam Kher

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

A chilling look inside the true events of 26/11, Hotel Mumbai is an unlikely crowd pleaser. An event that changed India’s approach towards terrorism forever, Anthony Maras does a great job of depicting the events sensitively while also keeping it very raw. Hotel Mumbai aims to present a reliable narrative of what happened during the three-day ordeal. Based on interviews of survivors and witnesses, the film introduces the viewers to the overwhelming terror and tension that everyone involved experienced. Showing the impact of the attacks on locals and visitors in equal measure, Maras gives much of the narrative space to the four gunmen. Straying away from the traditional notions of heroism, Hotel Mumbai puts no one in the heroic spotlight. Stunningly framed and photographed, the film is the perfect tribute to everyone affected by the terrible tragedy.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF LOVE

FAISAL AL HAJRI IS A GLOBAL AND LOCAL ARTIST FROM DOHA WHO IS ALSO THE DIRECTOR OF LITERATION, ATHLETICS & ARTS AT THE UNESCO CLUB OF PIRAEUS & ISLANDS. FACT’S ANUSHAY TAIMUR KHAN HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT HIS STUDIO AT THE FIRE STATION AND LEARN MORE ABOUT HIS THOUGHTS ON WORK AND LIFE…

GO: FOLLOW @PRINCEOFCULTURE_ ON INSTAGRAM TO KEEP UP WITH THE LATEST FROM FAISAL. 44

fact magazine

Hi Faisal! I am in absolute awe of your work. Can you explain your concept to us? I am all about unlimited limits. I know that limits are limits but I am trying to be a bit stubborn and push boundaries here. I speak about the infinite perspective in life. I believe we can trigger this life to examine the idea; why just one of everything? Why one job, one family, one relationship? Personally, I believe we shouldn’t identify ourselves with any concept or idea. All we have to do is jump from minute to minute and be fully present. The advantage is that you channel a high, creative force which can always give you the urgent need of the present moment to evolve. That is the basic concept that I work with. What is your idea of merging philosophy and art? I am someone driven with the life purpose of erasing consciousness and this is how I live from morning to night. When I wake up, I am all about lifting the energy up, expanding consciousness, because I feel like this is the nature of the universe; the universe is expanding, rising and it is all about growth. The beautiful purpose of life is a great way to be examined through art. It is my platform so I am using all different stories to examine different ideas of consciousness. I believe my country is pushing people to be better now and that is exactly what I believe Qatar deserves as well. Therefore, my philosophy is in balance with what is needed right now. Tell us a bit about your journey as an artist… I used to be a yogi back in the day and I studied a lot of religions and I also studied the new era of philosophy. What opened my eyes was when I studied the evolution of human psychology because I saw a pattern in front of my eyes. The whole nature of our life is just an on-going story and we don’t need to identify any pattern. But, when you identify a perspective by putting them into groups, I feel like that is a form of attachment. From relationships to willpower, the human has identified itself to the role of being a master. The idea of love has been distorted because of this identification. I want to examine this idea in my art and have meaningful work. Everyone can take a bunch of paints and throw something on canvas to give it meaning, I wanted to have

more a conversation. If art doesn’t help people to make them better, it has no meaning. I have always been interested in culture my entire life. My journey started when I was very young and when the age of the internet was introduced, I was thrown into a world where I could learn so much. My research started online, and trickled down to meeting people who would teach me so much more. From the Qatar Airways cabin crew to the British friends I made, I just wanted to be a curtain of knowledge for culture. Therefore, it made sense to be a part of UNESCO. What message do you aim to get across with your art? My boss gave me the title The Prince of Culture and calls me the rainstorm of ideas. My art is about connecting people to their art, society, and their dreams. I believe I have a lot of things to say and do, so I am just dreaming of creating a cultural empire which is based on the idea of love and beauty. I need people to be awakened to their inner self and do beautiful things. What does the future hold for you? My dream has always been of creating a cultural empire based on love, peace, and beauty. I’m building a highly advanced module of artistic residence where hospitality industry meets the world of arts. I have a vision which is inspired by my art world where I have taken velvet fabric, and I have embellished it with glitter and crystals and I call it, ‘One million stars”. It represents my dream to inspire & empower one million people around the world who will in return inspire another million. Art is a safer place to explore to understand life. I am grateful for Fire Station to give me this platform and I want to create the same for others out there. My people at UNESCO have really believed in me and I feel like this vision will come to life because of the trust they have put in me. What is your message for aspiring artists? I want them to be fully present. Be there and let the energy take over without judgment clouding their mind. The validation is stopping people from expressing themselves so all the artists just need to let their dreams take over. ✤ fact magazine

• CULTURE Q&A

MADE IN QATAR With the waves that it has been making in the market, ONE FM has made its mark as a home-grown Hindi radio brand. FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan got a chance to sit with the CEO & Founder, Mr. Naveed Abdulla, and talk a bit more about strategy and future plans for the radio station.

46

fact magazine

CULTURE Q&A •

Hi Naveed! Congratulations on one year of ONE FM! After a year, is the ONE FM vision still intact? Thank you! Yes, the vision is perfectly intact. This year being announced as the Qatar-India Year of Culture 2019 has proved to be a blessing for us and what we stand for. The immense support pouring in from the official authorities has contributed to our growth. They have been very pro-active and I think this exposure was definitely required in this country. All the ideas we present to the officials are welcomed with an open mind, the approvals are granted promptly and they have made sure that whatever was proposed has been aptly executed- this encourages us to shoot for the stars. We find this year inspiring in every way. The downside is that the people in Qatar are going to be spending a lot of money on entertainment this year! We’re planning back to back events for the Asians here so, we’re very excited. When you launched ONE FM, there were two Hindi radio stations that launched together. What do you think gave you the competitive edge in this scenario? We are 100% made in Qatar, by Qatar and for the people of Qatar. We know the pulse of the market, the ins and outs of the market and the requirement of our stakeholders as well. We don’t see anyone as competition because we complement each other. The fact that there was more than one radio station makes the listener enthusiastic they always have options! There’s a big storm of more radio stations coming in the future and a lot of activities are being revolved around that. So, the bigger goal achieved here is that the industry of radio has been launched and it’s successful, and that is what matters. We all fit in different genres so, we have our own set of niches: music and activities. In this time and age, people want options to choose from and that is exactly what competition brings. We never claim to be number one, even though our brand is ONE FM- we understand we have a long way to go. In the meantime, we’re focusing on our listeners and their needs. Do you believe you played a role in bringing back the radio culture in Doha? I believe that I played the role of giving the right information to the right authorities at the right time. As an individual, yes, it took me more than a decade of persistent approach to convince the authorities to bring the radio industry to life which I believe in completely. Radio is a very sensitive medium as it is live and selfcensored. So, we need to do a lot of fine tuning before we go on air. We focus on being culturally appropriate for the market. This is one of the examples for the next generation here, for those like me: you are born here, you live here and you must dream high.

Qatar is home for you and no one needs to feel like they’re an expat here. Qatar gives you everything you need to realize your dreams and all you need to do is chase them. Qatar deserves the best and so does everyone who belongs here. I believe this is just the beginning of great era for all here and make history. What is the next step for ONE FM? We aim to target people who, like me, have been born, raised and connect with Qatar. They are the ones who have made Qatar their home -people of different nationalities, profession, demographics who believed in us. ONE FM constantly is on the watch out to keep the listeners we have earned entertained. So far, we have managed to make sure that people have connected with the brand-people have started tuning in more to the frequency now which has made ONE FM a household name and the warmth towards ONE FM 89.6 is truly phenomenal. So now we want to concentrate on more local, authentic content for which, we will be involving talents from Qatar and showcasing them through our brand. In 2019, you will see Bollywood big names and big star casts- we have a lineup of celebrities and inspirational people who are coming to Qatar. It won’t necessarily be concerts- we are also aiming for live shows and theater. We aim to do something big out of Qatar as well and put our country on the map as an entertainment hub. What is your message for our readers? To all the parents out therelet your children dream, and encourage them to aim for the stars. Today, I drive on the same roads tuning into ONE FM 89.6 where I used to go to school 25 years ago. The entire ONE FM team and I would like to thank our beloved rulers, our Chairman who has been a great support, our well-wishers and sponsors for their immense support. It is your love which motivates and encourages us to aim higher. We are more than open to criticism, we make mistakes but we are proud to be a Qatari homegrown brand. So, our beloved audience is more than welcome to share their suggestions and probably even suggest new areas to experiment with. And, of course, keep listening to 89.6 ONE FM - Qatar Ki Dhadkan! As ONE FM, we want everyone to keep supporting us as they have been lately. We are very open to criticism, we can make mistakes and we are proud to be a homegrown brand. For this reason, we are open to suggestions from our audience and we want to find new areas to experiment. And, of course, keep listening to 89.6 ONE FM. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.ONEFMQATAR.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION. fact magazine

anana Island has its reputation around Doha as one of the best luxury resorts in the city. With high expectations and a heavier backpack, I set off to experience my Banana journey. The minute I arrived at the reception on the corniche, I knew exactly why this place gas rave reviews. I was treated like royalty as my luggage was taken and I was given a room within 10 minutes. The reception was a trailer of the beauty that the Island was and I was already relaxing for my mini escape from busy Doha life. We were escorted to our boat, which was nothing less than a business class trip, and reached the Island within 30 minutes. We were received with a man playing the bongos and I just know that this is the way I want to be welcomed everywhere in life! The grandeur reception of the hotel made me stop for a minute and take everything in; clear blue water reflected the warm sun of the pleasant Doha weather, welcoming staff was ready to receive us and finally, within the first 10 minutes, I was escorted to my sea view room. My bedroom was a story of its own. Giving a very modern yet cultural look, the bathroom space was enough to have a mini party in. I had all my accessories available, including a blow dryer I had conveniently forgotten and the basic necessities already stacked there. My room had a small seating arrangement on the right and a tub (YES, A TUB!) on the left side, right next to the window. I believe it was placed perfectly so you can draw yourself a bath and enjoy the beautiful views of the sea. A porch welcomed me for my sunsets on the island with a light breeze and I cannot begin to tell you how serene the entire setting was. Upon my request, the room was situated right in front of the children’s play area so, we took a dive right into the cool water. The entire area was designated to families, making Banana Island the ideal escape for the weekend. The area wasn’t too crowded and I took my sweet time for a much-needed tan. Shortly after, we were welcomed at the Q Lounge fact magazine

for lunch which was right next to the pool. Some warm food by the poolside in the magical weather – who can say no to that? It was a pretty decent way to begin the week if you ask me. Q Lounge is normally popular for their biryani; however, I chose to play it safe and settled for a club sandwich, which was delightful. After dipping my feet in the warm pool for a while and enjoying the picturesque beauty that Doha is, I headed for the Moroccan Hammam. One of the best things about Banana Island is the way they spoil you. I was there to completely become another version of Garfield the cat and, they made sure they delivered. I called myself a cart and was transported to the hammam immediately, where I was welcomed with tea, given my robe and asked to wait for someone to get me for my appointment. Right on the clock, I was received and the next one hour was a tale of 60 minutes in heaven for me. As this was my first experience at a hammam, I believe the benchmark has been set really high. A series of scrubs, oil for my hair and facial later, I sat in the sauna and exfoliated all the dead skin. Quite frankly, I could feel the difference in my skin and it was absolutely smooth. If you’re planning a day at the resort, I would highly recommend spoiling yourself with a Moroccan Hammam treatment. There were a lot of different activities around the Island which kept me busy; I got some time to catch a movie

at the cosy theatre followed by some delicious Ouzi at Al Nahham. With the seating giving you a luxurious view of the skyline, Al Nahham is an experience you definitely need to be a part of. Since Banana Island has restaurants in all price ranges, Al Nahham can be found in the fine dining section. So, if you’re celebrating a special night, dine with a view to remember. Back in my room, I set up some light music as I enjoyed the spectacular winds of Doha. My comfortable bed made sure I had a good night’s sleep as I was ready to dine like a Queen for breakfast. Azraq is truly an event set for royals. From their spectacular buffet for breakfast to dining outdoors, near the beach, I could not have asked for a better morning. I got my eggs made, fetched myself some fresh juice and enjoyed the freshly baked chocolate croissants. Azraq is definitely one of the reasons I will be coming back to Banana Island for a quick breakfast and dip in the water. Soon after this, the lazy in me went for another round of sunbathing on the private beach and took some Baliinspired pictures on the water swing. Truly, Banana Island lived up to the beauty that everyone promises it to be. It is a secluded island which is the ideal getaway from the Doha bustle. With options in dining that fit any budget and entertainment including a bowling alley, a kid’s corner, and general water activities, you can spend days over here without needing to actually leave Doha. I enjoyed my last meal, which was a serving fit for two, and we simply sat through the silent breeze of the island. Will I be coming back? With the various packages they’re 52

MEAT TREATS

When you hear the words “prime quality beef” to describe a steak, you’re definitely going to get a jitter of excitement and some drool-worthy moments. FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan was no exception to this introduction of Torino Steakhouse, and was pleasantly surprised at the restaurant’s concept and unique surroundings. fact magazine

83

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

M

y prime journey with Torino started with their broccoli soup which, initially, wasn’t something I was expecting to be served at a steakhouse. To top that off, honestly, a soup without butter? Within seconds though, this healthy bowl of winter warmth won me over. Not too thick, not too watery, just the right consistency and full of flavor. When you think of a steakhouse, a salad is the last thing on your mind. That was not the case for Torino. I was served the most delicious Adriana Watermelon Salad here that boasted their speciality sauce, pomegranate topping. Served with very lavish garnishing, the portion was fit to curb the hunger pangs of one diner. If you’re considering sharing a salad, you have to reconsider. It’s delicious and you will want the goodies for yourself. The steak was served, hot and sizzling, in its platter, waiting to be devoured by me – and devour I did. When beauty meets taste, you know you are at Torino’s. The special sauce gave it the right juicy tinge to the entire dish. Add the mashed potatoes to the mix and you’re in a very yummy steak heaven. Where Torino’s steakhouse is everything a meat lover would want, one item that I would personally recommend would be the beef pizza. Don’t be surprised and don’t look at this page like you think I’m crazy because this pizza is one of THE best I have had in town. A thin crust pizza with delectably marinated beef and vegetables is something you need to order for yourself when you go to Torino’s. That’s a friendly tip from me, and you can thank me later. You’re welcome! Apart from the meat, when you’re selecting your drinks, you need to have their margherita. Something that stops the meat sweats is going to be welcomed on your table and the margherita should be the choice of the hour. For the big end, I was served with seven different types of cheesecakes and my mind was absolutely blown. The fact that all seven had a unique and different taste was something I was not expecting. If I had to pick one, it would be chocolate snickers cheesecake that won my palate on this particular day. Overall, Torino’s steakhouse was a very pleasant experience with very helpful staff and knockout food. There are more options on the menu that I believe still need to be tried and tested but, we chose only the best for you – and what a choice it was. May you meat the right option! ✤

CLASSIC WARMTH

Despite the emergence of new hip and trendy hotels mothballing around Qatar, going to the Radisson Blu Hotel Doha is like paying a visit to an old friend. This is how FACT’s Craig Ferriman felt when he dined at Bentley’s Grill. It was like the warm embrace of an older, trusted chum. fact magazine

here’s something quintessentially old school Doha about a visit to the Radisson Blu Hotel. It’s been there for what feels like forever and that’s probably because you’ll struggle to find an expat that can remember a time when it wasn’t there. Another fun fact: this hotel boasts more outlets to eat and/or drink in than any other hotel in the country. Melanie the maître-d warmly greeted us on arrival with complimentary sparkly beverages to loosen up the joyous task of perusing their menu. It’s rather long but who’s complaining? The daily amuse bouche whetted the palate and we were into our Alaskan crab cake appetisers. Smoked paprika, salmon roe and herb aioli round off the simple starter. The paprika is sprinkled on the plate to create an artistic impression of crab tentacles and with the layered cakes in the middle, the plate was presented in the shape of a giant crab. Cute but classy I thought! I also tried duck liver on a bed of mash which was nice and I can also vouch for the Earl Grey tea cured salmon. You really can taste the tea in the salmon – it’s one of those very innovative dining moments. You’ll read the menu and actually understand what is on it. Seriously, how often do you go to restaurants and wonder what half the stuff on there is? It sounds delightful but ordering any of it is a bit of a stab in the dark. At the Bentley’s Grill, you can order a T-bone steak and you know that this is exactly what you’ll get, cooked to order and guaranteed to satisfy. There is an extensive range of cuts to choose from. I tried their waygu beef fillet mignon which I had medium rare and it was just the right amount of pink and exquisite to taste. Though served on a potato bed that didn’t work for me personally, feeling rather like a giant hash brown, I couldn’t fault them on much else. In a spirit of diversifying, I tried their pan fried duck breasts which were gorgeous and neatly served with potato and duck meat croquettes garnished with grilled wedges. Highly recommended. The dessert was better than I expected it to be assuming that all attention was focused on the meat. On the contrary, our rhubarb crumble was almost a pudding of its own but had a basket of vanilla ice cream and sticky toffee sauce. SO good. Ambience is classic and understated. Despite the chandeliers hanging above our table, the place didn’t feel obdurately ostentatious. Paintings adorned the walls and the candles and low lighting gave the venue intimacy. The arm chairs, are so heavy an Olympic weight lifter could struggle to move them but fortunately Melanie’s team tucked us in and we were as comfortable as anything until the moment we reluctantly left. ✤

ASIAN FLAVOURS

We don’t know what it means but we know where it is and how it tastes now! Toshi, that is – the new Pan-Asian restaurant to open at Millennium Plaza Hotel had caught the attention of FACT’s Craig Ferriman who was happy to oblige his curiosity with a visit to the venue.

oshi boasts an extensive menu of East Asian dishes and there really is something for everyone. We started with a soup which was fresh and full of kick. It really opened up the sinuses. You guessed it - the Tom Yum Kung which is a spicy Thai clear soup with prawns and Thai herbs – it was truly impressive in taste. There are plenty of salads too that are crisp and fresh. The Thai beef salad was well presented. Succulent tender beef strips were accompanied with cherry tomatoes and garden vegetables in a mild but tangy spicy Thai dressing – that’s what I’m talking about! There were appetisers aplenty but I’m a sucker for shrimp. Naturally, then, I ordered the ebi tempura which was a portion of four or five beautifullyfried crispy prawns, served with Tokyo pickles and tempura dipping. Very moreish they were too! I also tried the teriyaki beef which were pieces of grilled tender beef cooked in ginger teriyaki sauce and seasonal vegetables. To prove that vegetarians are not forgotten, we tried some excellent garden spring rolls filled with assorted vegetables and dipped them in a lovely sweet chilli sauce for extra punch. We then got to the sushi which I was chomping at the bit for. I was assured that the signature Toshi Special Roll was a unique thing that you can’t find anywhere else. The chef was most enthusiastic about it. It contained spicy tuna, asparagus, tobiko, crunch, kabayaki sauce, and spicy mayo. It certainly looks like a feast on the plate. The style of sushi at Toshi is popular and modern. It’s what pop music is to classical. The spicy mayo was a bit much for me but those non-sushi purists will relish it. The volcano rolls were marvelously mountainous. They towered high on the plate and fell over like lava when my chopsticks tried to pull a roll out like jenga. It’s ingredients included salmon, crab stick, avocado, cucumber, tobiko, tanuki, spicy mayo, spicy peanut butter and goma sauce. It’s a full-on feast for all your senses! If you’re not feeling the sushi, there are plenty of other things to choose from. There is the Asian corn fed chicken which is marinated chicken breast with green beans in a yummy tamarind-honey glazed sauce. The pan-fried salmon with stir fried baby bok choy in ginger-teriyaki sauce was gorgeously cooked and a little milder than other dishes. Of the many desserts, the tempura ice cream was probably my favourite. Or was it the batter fried vanilla ice cream with mixed berries puree. OK, you got me; it was a close run! Both were equally palate pleasing.

A CLASSIC WELLNESS GEM

The Diplomatic Club is an absolutely stunning piece of real estate sitting quietly by the mouth of The Pearl. If you’re looking to spend a day that blends together energy and relaxation, there’s no better place to chill out and recuperate than here. Take Craig Ferriman’s word for it… fact magazine

pened in the year 2000, The Diplomatic Club marked the very city limit of Doha then. This was a time when West Bay had no skyline, The Pearl had not been built and Lusail hadn’t even been conceived. And while all this expansion and development has amassed around it and construction has progressed further north up the coast, this property remains a timeless gem and a wonderful oasis amidst the bustle of the capital city it hides within. I live close to it and see it every day yet I had an ill-judged notion that it was purely for members and, well, diplomats. I was wrong. Yes, diplomats frequent it and members populate it but its facilities and grounds are very much open to all visitors. There is a lot of recreational activity to partake in, both indoors and outdoors. I started a fresh morning out in the sun and on the water. The assistant recreation manager, Pami, took me out with his colleague, Shanil, on the strip of water that runs from the open sea into West Bay Lagoon for a crash course in wake-boarding. I’d never tried it before but that didn’t really matter because they were able to get me into it at a beginner’s level. It was a little embarrassing to start with as I strapped my feet to the board and clung onto the rope being tugged along by the motor boat and I’d be lying if I said I let go and fell flat a few times but Pami and Shanil’s patience was remarkable and they were great instructors. It would be untrue to say I was a natural but it was a huge amount of fun and I’ll be keen to get out there again soon! The guys gave me an amazing spin in the boat around the crescent

and in a momentary fantasy I felt like James Bond or Matthew Bourne as we worked up a bit of speed and raced towards the skyline and then did a U-turn taking in the gorgeous towering views of The Pearl, on the ride back. Back at the club, I cooled down from the adrenaline rush by taking a dip in the pool and sipped a warm tea catching some rays on one of the sun loungers. This place aims to create a home away from home vibe. On a day out here, you could get your hair done in the salon – separate for male and female. There was a sizeable gym with plenty of equipment from cardiovascular machines to TRX units and weights and abs tools. I spent an hour with a personal trainer called Ahmed who put me through my paces with a high intensity workout that worked my abs. I felt like my quads had well and truly been stretched by the end of it and could feel the positive effects within just an hour. I’d more than worked up an appetite and enjoyed a light lunch sat outside at Al Borj restaurant by the private beach looking across at the majestic Pearl. The menu was a mix of light salads and sandwiches. It was casual and relaxed and I indulged in a chicken fajita and a refreshing watermelon juice. My day at the Diplomatic Club ended rather perfectly with a visit to the spa. My therapist, Tekad, gave me a Thai massage which got into all my pressure points and knocked all the internal stress right out of me. It was full on but I left feeling like I could float! The staff are highly professional here but they’re also friendly wanting to make you feel as welcome here as you would at home. They are discreet too. There is a glass squash court and a tennis court too for those who enjoy racquet sports but, honestly, you might not be able to tear yourself away from the beautiful beach. It’s the kind of weekend or day retreat that you can go to again and again for relaxation and recreation and there is plenty to do that’s both high octane or chilled out – depending on your mood. And the best bit of all, you don’t have to be a member or a diplomat as I had always thought! ✤
