Lettuce celebrate good food. :P
M
arch has always been the peak season for Doha. Everyone is finally back in town and adjusted in their routines, everything new has opened up, there are a list of A-List celebrities coming to town for the Fashion Trist Arabia awards and we are just trying to take in every minute of this phenomenal culture trip in Doha. It has been 5 years since I’ve moved here and I have seen how the country has been evolving in every area entertainment, infrastructure, arts, food and so much more. With the Fact Dining Awards in full swing, our team has been all over the place. I am thanking all my lucky stars because I got the dream team making it a bit easier for me to last this season. We’ve been eating our way through the city as always, and we’re here with our verdict. But, first, turn to p21 and feast your eyes on more than 40 amazing dining deals to mark in your calendar. This month’s food reviews are also a real treat. The foodie issue was put together for every reader who appreciates a delicious plate of quality ingredients. The love for Izu made us head to Mandarin Oriental in Msheireb Downtown, taking in the beauty that Barahat Square has become. We visited the phenomenal Shanghai Club, a personal favourite, and experienced Doha from a new perspective (p75); it was an Indian culinary journey at Saffron Lounge (p79); whilst DoubleTree Hilton Doha - Al-Sadd provided new foodie ventures (p83); and we take in the beauty that Barahat Square has become with dinner at the very elegant Izu in Mandarin Oriental, Doha (p87); finally winding up at Brewskis & Grub in Crowne Plaza Doha West Bay to get the weekend started (p91). A weekend stay at Radisson Blu Hotel Doha made me forget about all the things that have been driving me crazy as I got spoiled by Doha’s finest (p44). This is just the gist of what goes down in a week when it comes to editorial - the remaining story is always online where I get to see and interact with you all. March will always be my month and this year is extra special for me as I turn 30! I had so many check lists for this day and so many plans to celebrate myself (that’s just how I roll) that when I’m finally doing the final countdown I couldn’t care less about any of those things. Just going with the flow and taking one day at a time is way more fun than being hyper and pretending like you’re still...’young’ - because, let’s be real, 30 years young is in fact how I feel!. So, for the big Three Oh, I guess I’m going to see what mood I’m in and if I even decide to get out of comfortable pyjamas. Here’s to hoping for a good time nonetheless. Fill you all in next month...☺

FESTIVAL OF COLOURS The Festival Of Colours is inspired by the traditional Hindu festival Holi, which usually takes place in March and marks the coming of spring. ON HOLI, PEOPLE THROW powdered paint, known as gulal, at each other. For one day the distinctions between castes, religions and gender are set aside and everyone is equal. Holi is popularly known as the Indian “festival of spring”, the “festival of colours”, or the “festival of love”. The festival signifies the arrival of spring, the end of winter, the blossoming of love, and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships. WiroHub Events is back with the biggest Bollywood Holi in town with singers, actors, and top DJs of India in its unique style. From the dance performances to the colour throwing, each moment will be wonderful on March 13 at the Fan Club in Lusail. Ved Sharma is an Indian Bollywood Singer and Music Director. He is known for his biggest hit “Malang” from the movie of the same name. Ali Merchant is an Indian television actor and DJ. His first television stint was when he auditioned for Roadies 3. egardless of the possible side effects or posterior issues of any quick weight loss or fad fitness trend, deep down we’re all just looking for a fast way for results. Aren’t we? One of those loud and in-your-face contenders, which has been getting more coverage since 2019, is Intermittent Fasting (IF), an approach where calorie consumption is limited to windows of time, either daily or weekly, which could result in lower calories consumption and, through it, weight loss. But, is IF safe and, moreover, effective in the long run? Nutritional consultant and IF mentor, Anahi Ortiz-Prieto, tackles this Nutritional and Health craze from a sciencebased and research-backed perspective, to empower you to view (and even play with) this approach feeling clear about do’s, don’ts and everything else in between. Truth be told, there is a lot that comes to mind when we mention fasting. From religious fasts to medical ones, most of us have had an experience around fasting for as little as 8 hours (in the end, we fast in our sleep) and as long as few days. Thus, many of us will have our own preconceive ideas about what fasting means. In lay terms, we can say that Fasting is the intentional abstinence from consuming some or all food, drinks, or both, for any period of time. It isn’t a new concept nor a revolutionary one. In fact, it has been part of fact magazine

human culture and tradition since evolution, embedding itself into our genetic makeup and anatomy even, as well as becoming a big element in several ancestral belief systems. In fact, we could say that, from a biological perspective, especially when considering the lifestyles of our ancestors until the last five to eight decades, fasting is more natural and normal for our bodies than the concept of eating three to five meals each day. When it comes to fasts, there are many different kinds, each with distinctive purposes, approaches and benefits. Having said that, when talking about Intermittent Fasting, we discuss a process that involves cycling between periods of eating and periods of fasting, usually ranging from a few hours to a few days at a time. With IF the person decides when they will eat, how many calories and the quality of them, in order to differentiate between fasted state and fed state, which signals the body’s endocrine system to shift the production of hormones and other chemicals. THE COMMON BENEFITS OF INTERMITTENT FASTING: Beyond the widen use of fasts and other restricting ideas to lose weight in short amounts of time, Studies have revealed that IF offers powerful effects on the body, particularly around muscle recovery, mental clarity and general brain health, not to mention support with optimal longevity. 36

Here are some of the benefits that Intermittent Fasting offers to a normal person who isn’t dealing with any preconditions or disorders: l Supports a naturally healthy weight through maintaining a calorie deficit consistently; l Increases lean muscle mass; l Increases growth hormone secretion; l Improves insulin sensitivity; l Reduces inflammation at a cellular level; l Promotes detoxification by minimizing the efforts of the liver to process food constantly; l Improves the immune system l Supports skin rejuvenation by controlling hormonal health and supporting a better gut; l Enhances heart health by improving blood pressure and reducing the bad cholesterol levels; l Aids in cancer prevention and increases the effectiveness of chemotherapy l Increases brain health and clarity by augmenting the production of neurotrophic growth factor l Promotes cellular repair processes; l Supports anti-aging physical hormonal process and extends longevity; and

l Boosts brain function, even helping prevent neurodegenerative disorders. However, there are two amazing mindset benefits that come from a very intuitive and holistic approach that tend not be ignored (even when they are among the biggest paybacks there are: l IF helps you relearn what hunger feels like for you, which can result in a more intuitive and wholesome approach to food and nourishment; and l It supports you in building mental, physical and emotional resiliency and discipline, allowing you to discover any dysfunctional thoughts or habits around food, eating and mindfulness. WHO IS INTERMITTENT FASTING FOR? Now, you might be reading this and wondering where this amazing tool was when you needed it the most (regardless of the reason why you needed it!) or even if you might be a good candidate for it now. In general, IF is great for individuals with good health overall. However, these people should be refrain from fasting for long periods of time: l Anyone pregnant or on the first week’s post-partum; l Anyone struggling with low blood sugar issues; and l Anyone who is in recovery from an eating disorder.
TYPES OF FASTS AVAILABLE: As we discussed before, fasting, being such an ancestral tradition, could look different for different people. Here are some of the most common Intermittent Fasting options out there: l 5:2 Diet – On this approach, individuals maintain their normal calorie consumption for 5 days and then commit for two nonconsecutive days to a low calorie diet (of up to 600Cals); l 16:8, 20:4 and 18:6 Intermittent Fasting Styles – All of these start from a similar premise: There are long windows of time where the individual maintains and fasted status, and then refueling happens in one or two meals only and for a timed period of time only; and l Eat-Stop-Eat – This approach maintains normalcy on most of the meals, most days and then add totally 24hrs fasted days through the week As you can see, the options to try and play with Intermittent Fasting are countless and, with enough guidance and awareness, the benefits are endless. My best advice? Start experimenting with it with as little as 12hrs daily and, if working, work yourself into longer fasted periods on your time. After all, beyond losing some weight, there’s virtually little that could go wrong for you and the gains are abundant! ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.ANAHIBROWN.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION. fact magazine

BIG SCREEN Bloodshot
Highlights
WHAT’S IT ABOUT:
WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
Bloodshot alias Ray Garrison is a superhuman-soldier who was killed and brought back to life by a group of scientists. Using advanced technology, the scientists transformed him into a human killing machine that is able to heal from injuries quickly and interface with technology. Initially Bloodshot doesn’t remember anything from his former life, but when this changes, he has only one thing in mind: Revenge.
DIRECTOR: Dave Wilson CAST: Vin Diesel, Toby Kebbel, Eiza González, Sam Heughan, Guy Pearce
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?
Based on the bestselling comic book, this upcoming American superhero movie is set to make its big screen debut in March and promises us 100+ minutes of action at its finest. It’s none other than Vin Diesel who brings the comic character Bloodshot to life ― and this alone guarantees a movie worth watching. When elite-solider Ray Garrison and his wife get killed, a group of scientists bring Ray back to life, stronger than ever before. With an army of nanotechnology in his veins, he’s now an unstoppable human killing machine. But to be able to control him, the scientists have deleted Ray’s memories completely. When Ray regains the memories of his old life, he hunts down the man who killed him and his wife, and uncovers a larger conspiracy. As Valiant comics’ first movie, Bloodshot will be something very different compared to Marvel or DC movies and promises all superhero fans a new character to celebrate.

The tough CIA agent JJ gets demoted and assigned to surveil a family’s home. But nine-year-old Sophie spots the cameras in her apartment and manages to follow the clues to JJ’s hideout. She makes a deal with him: she won’t blow his cover if he teaches her how to be a spy.
DIRECTOR: Peter Segal CAST: Dave Bautista, Kristen Schaal, Chloe Coleman
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?
Packed with different tones and genres, My Spy is a movie that adults AND kids will enjoy to the fullest. Entertainment specialist Peter Segal, whose career has to date brought him within sniffing distance at the Oscars, created a formulaic yet eccentric family action-comedy. His star in My Spy is the former Wrester, Bautista, who’s in the role of the CIA agent JJ. It seems like Bautista is picking up the reins from Dwayne Johnson as the lovable tough guy with a heart of gold and we love how his character develops over the story from the tough guy to the caring one. With plenty of laugh out loud moments, expect some rude humor, crude jokes, and dangerous explosions, gunfire and fist fights.

Supervision
By Justin Bieber After a musical hiatus of four years, Justin Bieber’s latest album Changes was released on Valentine’s Day and while we can consider it as a present to all the ‘Beliebers’ out there, we can also be sure about it being a Valentine’s present for his wife Hailey, as the album is all about Justin’s love for her. Talking about his marriage with Hailey, the lyrics of all 17 tracks give an insight into the superstar’s matured and emotional psyche, and the personal growth that he has experienced over the last few years. Especially Intentions, featuring Quavo, which serves the many praises of Hailey and proclaims Justin’s intentions to marry her. He compliments her looks, her kindness, her cooking, and her parents for the way that she was raised. While Intentions has a romantic vibe, Yummy is more fun and funkier and has definitely taken over the radio waves. So, whether you’re looking for a melodic backdrop to an intimate dinner or you’re just wanting to shake your hips on the dance floor, there’s really something for everyone on Changes. Guest appearances include Post Malone, Travis Scott, Kehlani and more, and we couldn’t agree more with Bieber, when he said that this is the music he loves the most out of anything he’s created to date.

By La Roux
The Grammy-winning and BRIT and Mercury-Prize nominated artist who gained worldwide fame with her debut album is back on the scene. After the generation-defining hits ‘In For the Kill’ and ‘Bulletproof’, La Roux releases her third album Supervision and delivers, once again, a throwback to a retro 80’s world - one that we find ourselves rather fond of. The Album highlight is Do You Feel, a track that reminds us of Janet Jackson’s 1986 smash hit record ‘Control’. Automatic Driver has a sweet and poppy beat and International Woman of Leisure is reminiscent of ‘Bulletproof’, with icy vocal tones and stabbing synth beats. In general, Supervision is a bit samey and repetitive compared to La Roux’s second album ‘Trouble In Paradise’, but she has still created something remindful of an era of music that we truly love whilst her unique overall sound remains intact and that’s why we love it!
As Vesta walks through the forest, she stumbles upon a handwritten note that says, “Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn’t me. Here is her dead body”. Determined to figure out the murder, Vesta searches for answers that eventually lead her to more questions. A novel that serves a truly twisted reality, suspense and dark humour.

young woman in a hijab stood behind the table with the most pleasant smile and gave me a look of encouragement to try on the jewellery I was admiring. I gushed about how beautiful the designs were and wondered if I could even afford one. Making a mental note to ask my husband to gift one of these beauties to me, I sheepishly put a few down and held on to my favourites. I was tied between two rings that translated to ‘you are the happiness of my life’ and ‘passion’. With what looked like a semi-precious stone Aqeeq and Amethyst, I couldn’t help but ask the price. The answer, to date, amazes me. QR45. Oh, so this must be an artificial stone then, right? Well, this just might be one of the mysteries of life how this brand sells authentic stones at an affordable price tag. I was on a mission; I needed to know more. I took Perihan’s card as her table got crowded, with more people as amazed as I was. It took me a few days, a couple of Instagram messages and some beautiful rings I bought, later, and I finally got Perihan to agree for a quick cup of coffee to discuss my love for

her creations. A mother of two who gave up her career to pursue this passion of jewellery making, Perihan had me in awe. A journey that started during her late teens, Precious is a brand that she holds close to her heart. Marketing, designing and the talented knack of knowing that unique is a market yet to be explored in Egypt, three friends got together to start the business in 2006. PM2 came into being with the first exhibition being a huge success. Family, friends and acquaintances made this brand into a success and the clients took away the real deal of the bargain. Unfortunately, the untimely death of the third partner had the other two wondering if they ever really focused on fulfilling their wishes. However, it was too difficult to come back to this with one of them not alive anymore and the trauma did not allow the friends to step on the same path again. A year passed by and Perihan often adorned her own pieces, an acquaintance complimented one of the pieces she wore and confessed that she still wore the ones she bought a few years ago. A flicker of hope and the love of jewellery gave Peri, as I was now addressing her, the courage to actually start the venture again.
ARTS & CULTURE •
this time, it is truly the love for nature, the art and the cutting-edge designs that the artist is capable of putting forward. Truly the most unique piece there will ever be in the market, I type this feature after gifting yet another ring to one of my friends. The design, quality, and uniqueness of the jewellery has everyone noticing it and nothing makes my heart happier than being the one to introduce them to Precious. ✤
And Precious was born in 2009. After shifting to Doha in 2011, it seemed like life got in the way and the need to be productive set in. Perihan forgot all about her brand and settled into the comfortable corporate life. The hunt for unique jewellery in Doha urged the designer to introduce Precious in Doha in 2017. Inspired by earth and the colours of mother nature, the handmade jewellery combined with high-quality stones, believing in the healing powers of the stones to bring harmony and peace for the customer, Precious proved to be a brand for all age groups and different tastes. Whether it is the Gaia collection that resembles the earth, plain designs with a variety of colours from the beautiful Agate stones or my personal favourite, the Soft Oriental line with simple Arabic designs that match all cultures, there is something for everyone! Perihan’s humble nature and patience were a compliment to the handcrafted pieces that I now show off everywhere. Each time I meet Peri, I tend to buy a number of rings from her, out of which I am only left with one, something I have saved for my daughter, because the uncountable compliments just do not stop. Encouraging women to take the step that this woman has taken, the least I could do was be a brand ambassador and apparently ‘gifter’ of these magnificent pieces. The love, adoration, and story behind the brand gives it life but, more than anything, owning a peice of jewellery from this brand is precious indeed. The plus point for this venture would be the fact that once you own something from Precious, you are truly the sole owner of the style and there will be no one you will ever find who is wearing the same thing. Uniqueness takes a new meaning with Perihan’s expert eye for design and quality. The brand is not for making overflowing profits for her, it is a personal agenda to make sure that what was missing in the market for her is available for those who love standing out - frankly, who doesn’t? Except,

PERSONIFIED You would think that a drive across town for errands is all anyone wishes for on the weekend. FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan wanted to haul up somewhere nice for a total escape and so she booked herself a weekend at one of the most iconic properties in the country. Enter Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha where you can leave the bustle of the busy roads behind…
I
f you ever come across the building that shines like gold any time of the day, trust your instinct and draw a little closer to the legendary Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha. Not only does it cast a shimmer on your day, this long-standing establishment has carved its place in the market as one of the most hospitable in the city. Known for its traditional touch and remarkable service, the hotel adds a homely touch to your stay. Booking myself in for the weekend to be near a few local destinations that I wanted to hit over the next two days. I got myself a suite, given that the entire family was going to be tagging along on this venture. The lavish designer furnishings and interior that is influenced by Asian, English and Arabian vibes is paired with world-class amenities. Home to nine different restaurants, two coffee shops, a pool bar and five bars including a nightclub, the hotel seems like a trip to grandma’s where everything is served on a silver platter and you will never go hungry! With two separate buildings that interconnect, we got a swift check-in followed by the bell-boy escorting us to our room and telling us all about our dining options for the night. Friendly chat, a warm welcome, and fruits and chocolates at arrival is exactly what you would expect from this hotel. My suite, much to my surprise, was lavishly spacious and at my disposal for the entire weekend; and, naturally, it seemed like the right thing to utilise this place to the max. With a dining room big enough to fit two families, a lounge to get some friends together, and a bed that simply hugs your body as you sink into oblivion, I frankly did not expect the hotel to go this big with their highly affordable suite. It had been a while since I had stayed at Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha and I always associated it with being a classic hotel. The updated state-of-theart amenities had me enjoying my trip even more as I took in the bustling city views form my enormous windows at night. This called for a party and that is exactly what I did. A gathering to fully take advantage of this cosmic setting and therefore starting the weekend seemed like the ideal thing to do. A hot shower and watching TV from the comfort of the bed had my family settle right in, immediately. Oh, you thought I meant PARTY – well, it seems the years have caught up with me and my idea of partying hard usually involves a comfy robe and some good series! Out of the nine restaurants that are here, we have always been the biggest fans of Chingari, the fine-dining Indian restaurant. The entire set up of the place is inspired by the Mughal era, with

marble elephants at the entrance, velvet red draping that is a synonym of luxury of that time, live music and seating to easily fit six people in every corner, it felt just right to dine here on an otherwise crazy Thursday night. With our drinks and crackers placed right in front of us with the mix of chutneys and sauces, we were all set for our Indian gastronomical experience. I’ve always loved the vibe of this place and as soon as the live music started, mimicking the entertainment of the king in the Mughal era, I was reminded exactly why this place was a favourite. From classic Indian songs to a desi rendition of Hotel California on sitar and tabla, I swayed to the music as my feast was served. Biryani, mixed BBQ platter and the good ol’ daal were our companions for the night as we relished the food which was as good as the aromatic scents it brought with it. The comfort of the bed had us late for breakfast the following day so we joined the complimentary classes at the Cabana Club while we waited for brunch to be served at Hyde Park. Yoga, dance classes, and morning wake up calls with a work out session are all available luxuries some complimentary and others for a small fee - you can avail if you’re a guest at the hotel. After a quick session at the club, we sat outdoors to simply enjoy the warm sun in the chilly weather as a beautifully landscaped waterfall with lush green bushes, blooming the most beautiful pink flowers, gave a refreshing feel right in the middle of the city. Birds chirping, kids running around and the soothing rhythm of the waterfall made it feel like we were transported elsewhere. Honestly, in between errands and personal relaxation, I found myself having a difficult time choosing all the activities I wanted to try for the time I was here. Fish & Chips at The Frying Scotsman or a game of shuttlecock skills on the badminton court? Maybe I wanted to try the drinks at Inginuity or volleyball with the family? Or just plain old competition with everyone on the basketball court as I found my cravings for the delish Ruby Wu’s classics dragging me down there instead? All in all, a mere fifteen minutes away from almost every important place in town that includes museums, the gorgeous corniche and the ever-loved Villaggio Mall, I found myself falling for the comfort of this hotel all over again. With the hospitality market in Doha introducing newer, fancier and big brand name hotels at such a fast pace, it is absolutely heart-warming to see that some places just know their worth and strengths and hold on to the basics of homeliness and great service. That is why Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha will always stand out for me. ✤

A NEW DRIVING EXPERIENCE:
MERCEDES AMG GT 4-DOOR The new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door model delivers driving experiences in new dimensions and extends the AMG model family. It is available now at Nasser Bin Khaled Automobiles, the Authorized General Distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Qatar, in the Mercedes-Benz showroom on Salwa Road.
T
he new coupé is the first four-door sports car from Affalterbach and draws directly on the legendary SLS and AMG GT models of success. As another vehicle developed autonomously by MercedesAMG it combines unique design, high comfort and outstanding sports car engineering with an athletic, four-door fastback layout. It thus offers more space and more potential uses. Systematic expansion of the AMG GT family with the 4-door Coupé opens up the sports car segment to those looking for a vehicle for day-to-day use, but unwilling to go without the unparalleled performance of Mercedes-AMG. Longitudinal and lateral dynamics at the highest level, and a striking silhouette with classic proportions put the MercedesAMG GT 4 Door Coupé in the portfolio of its two-door brother at first glance. The expressive design with the low bonnet, dominant front and muscular body language emphasizes the sporty genes of the four-door coupé, which sets new standards as the youngest model in the AMG family: as the first four-door AMG GT model combines high everyday comfort with diverse individualization options and the latest sports car engineering. The interior of the first four-door AMG GT model is characterized by elegant coolness and also the latest features: innovative control panels can be intuitively operated and configured as required. The blend of high individualization and sports car technology, placing yet more focus on the requirements of discerning customers, is also clear from the wealth of equipment packages and individual options. The latest coup from Affalterbach also lives up to the Mercedes-AMG brand pledge about its high driving dynamics and sets the benchmark in its segment on the racetrack too. CLEAR AT FIRST SIGHT: THE AMG GT FAMILY MEMBERSHIP Clearly recognizable as a member of the AMG GT family, the new AMG GT 4-Door Coupé follows the design philosophy of Sensual Purity. It takes the striking proportions with convex surfaces and 52

a muscular body and develops them to exciting effect for a fourdoor variant of an AMG GT Coupé. The front view with a long bonnet and two powerdomes leaves no doubt that this is the youngest member of the AMG GT family. The 4-door coupé follows the design tradition of the successful AMG GT models: the powerful body exudes dynamism and motivation. Sensuous shapes with convex surfaces lend the fourdoor GT timeless elegance, whilst the flowing silhouette with the lowered greenhouse flags up its sporting credentials. As in the AMG GT R radiator shutters, the Airpanel in front of the centre cooling air inlet improves the car’s aerodynamic efficiency. Slim MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, the AMG-specific radiator protection grille, the Shark Nose and the front apron with its enhanced Jet Wing (with a flowing A-Wing on the six-cylinder model) also lend the youngest model from Affalterbach the hallmark presence of the AMG GT family. With frameless side windows and a flat windscreen inclined far to the rear, features of the classic coupé architecture are also cited. With the additional seat row in the rear the characteristic lines of the AMG GT models are not compromised. The tailored upper contours and broad shoulders point to the athletic, sporty orientation of the car, which is additionally emphasized by very pronounced rear wheel arches. The rear view of the new 4-door coupé picks up on familiar features of the AMG GT design idiom: extremely slim LED tail 54

lights define the hallmark boot sill line, the rear aerofoil extendable in several stages not only underscores the family affiliation; it is also an important element of the active aerodynamics. The two eight-cylinder models can be identified through the three horizontal louvres in the side front air intakes, the Jet Wing with its trim element in Silver Shadow, the distinctive diffuser on the tail end and the two-pipe exhaust system with trapezoidal tailpipe trims. The six-cylinder variant, meanwhile, has one louvre in each of the air inlet grilles, round twin tailpipe trims and a somewhat less pronounced rear diffuser. TOP SPORTING PERFORMANCE: V8 BITURBO ENGINES WITH UP TO 470 KW (639 HP) The exciting AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine is already used in numerous AMG models. Its output has been enhanced yet further for the new Mercedes AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined 11.2 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 257 g/km) and ensures superior performance on a par with a sports car. It delivers 470 kW (639 hp) and a maximum torque of 900 Nm, which is available over a wide engine speed range from 2500 to 4500 rpm. The top engine of the new four-door AMG GT thus exudes effortless superiority in every engine speed range. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds clearly illustrates this, as does the maximum speed of 315 km/h. In the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined 11.0 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 252-256 g/km) the V8 unit provides 430 kW (585 hp) and 800 Nm maximum torque. The sprint from standstill to 100 km/h lasts just 3.4 seconds, and the top speed is 310 km/h. The AMG 4.0-litre V8 engine works with the proven biturbocharging, where the two exhaust-gas turbochargers are arranged not on the exterior, but between the cylinder banks. The advantages of the “hot inner V” are in the compact engine design and the immediate response of the exhaust-gas turbochargers. EMOTIVE GEARSHIFTING EXPERIENCE: THE AMG SPEEDSHIFT TRANSMISSION The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G 9-speed transmission is specially tuned to the requirements of the eight-cylinder variants of the new four-door AMG GT. A wet clutch is used here. This reduces weight and inertia and optimizes the response. The extensively tailored software enables extremely short shift times and fast multiple downshifts and delivers an especially emotive gearshifting experience thanks to the double-clutching function. There is also a RACE START function, ensuring optimum acceleration. DIRECT AND IMMEDIATE: AMG SPEED-SENSITIVE SPORTS STEERING The electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering has a variable ratio. It impresses with its precise feedback thanks to the AMG-specific rack-and-pinion steering with a variable ratio. Power assistance also varies between the three stages “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport+”. The corresponding characteristic is automatically activated depending on the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode or can be personalized as required in “Individual” mode.
GOOD CONTROL AND FADE-RESISTANT: THE AMG HIGHPERFORMANCE BRAKING SYSTEMS In line with the high output values and their associated performance the eight-cylinder models have a large-dimensioned brake system consisting of compound discs with 6-piston fixed calipers at the front and single-piston floating brake calipers at the rear. The S variant is characterized by yellow brake calipers, whilst the base variant of the eight-cylinder sports red brake calipers. SPACE AS NEEDED: FOUR OR FIVE SEATS TO SUIT REQUIREMENTS When it comes to the seats, too, Mercedes-AMG proves that comfort and exclusivity need not conflict with a performanceoriented vehicle configuration. The driver’s and front passenger seat can be configured in different scenarios. The selection ranges from the sporty, comfortable seat and a seat with elegant diamond quilting to an extremely contoured performance seat with an integral head restraint. The four-door AMG GT also offers different seating configurations to meet all demands for the rear, too. These range from an asymmetrically folding rear bench seat for the family to two variants with two individual seats respectively. ✤

T
he special limited-edition GMT Aquaracer is inspired by the colours of the Qatari flag, and features a vibrant dual-colored combination of burgundy and silver-white on the bezel, that is further underscored by the use of Arabic numbers. GMT timepieces are fine mechanical instruments, extremely popular for their ability to display a second time zone, and the limited edition Aquaracer is a prime example with its 24-hour time display in Arabic numerals. The option of a second time zone ensures ease and convenience for Qatari travellers, who will always know the local time in their homeland. Adorned with a special engraving on the back case representing the Doha skyline and available in 200 pieces only, the special limited edition Aquaracer will be available to pre-order at the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition 2020. The stunning 43 mm Aquaracer timepiece sports a stark black dial that is accented by unique Arabic numerals on the bezel, as well as a date window at 3 o’clock on the dial and a triangle marker at 12 o’clock on the bezel, for optimal readability. With water resistance up to 300 meters, the timepiece retains its iconic diving DNA with its stainless-steel bracelet with diving extension, and folding clasp with double safety push-buttons. The watch also features a unidirectional turning bezel and fine brushed and polished steel case back with a decorative engraving, ensuring that the watch is unique, on-trend and memorable, from every angle. This launch allows TAG Heuer to show their commitment to watch lovers by developing a special Qatar limited edition that pays tribute to national identity and highlights both the Arabic culture and the colors of the Qatari flag. T
here has been a steady evolution of the menu at Shanghai Club and standards have continually been raised. Yet the recent acquisition within the last year of new executive chef, Ooi Kar Kim, has taken the popular Chinese restaurant to new heights. There were subtle changes to the décor, mostly in the lighting, but the major changes can be tasted in the food itself. After a light appetiser, we started with the age-old favourite, the Peking Duck. It arrives on a trolley and the duck is sliced in front of the table – and it all looked as I remembered. It’s cured for a day and then roasted to perfection in Chinese spices. The twist though was in the pancakes which were the best I’ve ever tasted. Rather than a papery filo texture, these were fresh, ‘pillow soft’ by their admission and more authentic than what even most foodies are used to – truly wonderful. The dim sum is something to shout about too. Included in the basket now along with shrimp and crab dumplings are scallop and lobster dim sum which is a real treat and makes the offering top class. Not only do they taste equally delicious, they’re generously packed too. One menu item that really stood out was the duck stuffed mushroom bun. It was particularly curious because the only thing that was mushroom like about it was its shape. Cut into it and we found duck meat inside and the outer layer was covered in light chocolate. It was an incredible revelation and

a rare combination of style and substance! It sure got the table talking and proof that no duck is wasted. Indeed, we even ate another warm appetiser - duck on rice crackers. I had the honour of watching Chef Kim cook the stir-fried beef tenderloin in the kitchen, live. The pan was flaming hot and at one point literally on fire! It was delicious and well complimented with seasonal vegetables. The Shanghai Club is a versatile space occupying the entirety of the hotel’s forty third floor. One side of it is the bar and the other is the restaurant so we started our evening in the

bar where the happy hour is competitively priced with a hardto-rival menu of drinks and bites. The beverages are generous in size and the bar bites are straight from the main kitchen meaning they are on point. The wasabi prawns we bit into it had the most outrageous kick. If you expect your food to come with plenty of spice, then you’ll not be disappointed. Nothing is cooled down here unless you ask for it to be (and we supported this!). All desserts are Chinese and the chilled mango sago cream with mango jelly and pomelo was the ideal palate cleanser to an evening of rich cuisine. I could not believe how long we had been there when it came time to leave but we must have been enjoying ourselves a lot. All waiting staff are Chinese and the service is of the highest standard at Shanghai Club. This restaurant has not rested on its laurels and has continued to evolve now reaching new altitudes and I’m not just talking about its stunning sky-scraping views nestled in the very heart of West Bay – but every single other element – they’ve truly nailed it! ✤

I
f you know me, you know I love all things Katara Cultural Village. I feel like the best restaurants in town are found in this iconic cultural hub as this is where I found my favourite karak, my absolute favourite artist and the best music classes. So, it was only natural to hunt down the one Indian restaurant I had not visited here. Saffron Lounge is difficult to be missed with its name on the building in bright red. As soon as we enter, we can feel the traditional vibes set in as a friendly and knowledgeable team welcomes us to the restaurant. Taking a seat by the window to enjoy the striking view of Katara beach, I felt myself ease into my environment. The walls and gallery towards the dining area mimicked classic Indian-styled arched windows, that were purely for decoration, with ornate chandeliers adding the bling to the room. It looked like I was suddenly in one of the wedding halls that we’ve always seen on TV in Bollywood movies. The entire place had a contrasting red and muted gold palette that is easy on the eyes. In addition, the place had a mix of comfortable sofas with traditional patterned cushions on them as well, giving a regal look to certain sections of the restaurants. As we started with a fresh beetroot and mint juice, which was deliciously revitalising, we asked the chef to spoil us with the best of the menu. Requesting for small portions of all the dishes, we got right into the chutneys and the famous papads – a yummy welcome snack. The sizzling lentil soup set us in a mood for the aesthetically appealing and modern concept that we sat down for as it came in a thumb-sized cup, with a dash of garam masala, and a sprinkle of coriander – leaving aromas of perfection. A bit strong for my liking but ideally fitting to the menu, I got on to my next target; the famous chaats of India! Over the years, my love for Indian chaats has grown to the extent that midnight cravings have led to flavourful hunts of the best concoction in town. The dhai bharas came in what I would call a small dessert bowl, covered with a spinach leaf that was fried with bread crumbs, introducing me to the ever-pleasing palak pakoda. The burst of 80

flavours as I dug into that first bite of the daal dumplings, mixed with the palatable yogurt and chutneys is indescribable. The spinach pakora oomph-ed up the experience of the entire dish and I was left wanting more. For the meaty delights, yours truly requested one-bite portions of each of the BBQ items on the menu and I did not regret that in the slightest. With the chutneys at my disposal and meat samplers right in front, I could easily call this a meatilicious affair. Knowing how vegetarian cuisine is a huge part of Indian culture, I was introduced to my first bite of BBQ’d broccoli dressed in melted cheese. If there was any way that vegetables could be part of my diet plan, this was it. The entire BBQ selection was incredible; the mutton chops sealing the deal for me with their tenderness and finger-licking tanginess. The main course was a display of typically traditional Indian dishes that included butter chicken, daal makhni, roghan josh sprinkled with nuts and so on. The crisp and warm roti gave the meal a home-cooked feel and it felt like it was simply a taste that I have known forever. The dessert, in this case, was taking all the points home. The conventional ras malai and saffron cake were given a twist by being displayed in a sandwich and dipped in a sea of cold, sweet milk. Cream on the top of the dessert with strawberries gave it the final big-bang of the night, this dessert was made for a true foodie like me - a fan of Indian sweets till the day I die! We even got a chance to try the newly launched tea section of the restaurant where a box of India’s finest teas were presented and where I would normally go for the classic red tea, the weather called for a cup of warm chamomile tea this particular evening. Coming in the cutest setting and winning

oubleTree by Hilton Doha - Al-Sadd is the new kid on the block. With its recent grand opening, who wouldn’t want to go in and check out the latest talk of the town? We were there in a heartbeat. Situated right next to the busy Al Nasr street, a local would find it an odd location for the hotel to be in. It does, however, make sense from a hospitality perspective to open in one of the most popular and iconic areas of the city. I came face-to-face with a mellow looking, sand-coloured building with its coffee shop right in the front, giving an insight to the already-popular destination. The interior of the hotel is another story of its own though. Muted grey and pale-yellow tones of the interior served as a tribute to the ever-changing dunes of Doha. A subtle contrast of orange and green makes the décor come to life as the fascinating dimensions of the hotel made it stand out in the sea of the growing hospitality sector. OPEN, an aptly named restaurant, is an all-day dining restaurant that I immediately envisioned as an ideal location for brunch. With its open kitchens and different stations that explore Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines of both regions, giving the guests ample choices to explore. The seats were comfortable and I chose my table in what I deemed as the snuggest little spot in the restaurant. My gastronomical experience started from the get go and I asked to sample everything and anything! Hence came the lavish display of starters that included the Arabic favourites; hummus with pita bread and the vinegary fattoush salad that amped up the taste of the dish. The cherry tomatoes was the ideal fit for a health freak with the mouth-watering avocado sitting atop flavourful grainy bits of quinoa, making this a favoured dish for the lot. Tasting bits of meaty display that was presented, I was sold on the zesty lemon salmon that came on a bed of asparagus. With the lemon butter sauce serving as a booster, This dish was the most piquant feature of this luscious dish. The juicy 84

steaks with the assortment of sauces came as a close second, tied with the shrimp ravioli, which was a delicious treat for the entire group. Even though the dessert selection was served right after the main course, the conversation between friends continued and resulted in a round of milkshakes which will be remembered FOREVER. The gigantic mugs came overflowing with goods that are made of dreams: a creamy volcanic eruption decorated with smarties, wafers and popcorn. A display set for Candyland, the rich caramel shake was just the perfect sweet treat. I loved the vibe that this place had with its casual take and delectable food. I cannot wait for the restaurant to fully open and even serve special beverages. I will be heading back to get that pizza, which has my name on it! ✤

f you know your history of the city then you’ll know that in the not too distant past, the heart of old Doha was Msheireb. That all changed when West Bay sprouted up and Doha got a new centre of gravity but city planners have sought to breathe new life into the old soul of the capital and IZU sits at the beating heart of it. The brainchild of celebrity chef Izu Ani, the aptly-named IZU occupies two floors but dinner is on the mezzanine with what has been described as the best view in the hotel, looking out at the glorious courtyard. I had to keep reminding myself I wasn’t in downtown Beirut but downtown Doha. As a personal disclaimer, French cuisine is my favourite but I was blown away by the food here. I started with the tuna carpaccio from the raw section of the menu which was perfectly plated on a citrusy bed with a vinaigrette dressing which made the mouth water. The grilled marinated prawns in garlic and rosemary on sour bread was a superb starter. The prawns were huge, and the sauce didn’t hold back, whilst the bread is noteworthy for just how fresh and soft it is. All their bread is made in-house; they are proud of that and they should be. Their signature appetiser really was the thing to go for because you won’t get it elsewhere. It’s fried organic eggs and foie gras on bread with a devilishly dripping truffle sauce. The French don’t get prizes for the healthiest eating but, my goodness, what a treat this proved! For an entrée, I opted for the slow braised beef short ribs with padron pepper. The meat just tore apart effortlessly and tasted heavenly. This was their showpiece meal but the portion size was generous unlike so many fine dining eateries that leave you starving. The menu has a decent range of choices but it’s not exhaustive and I was told that this is intentional. Rather than cook a lot of things quite well, their chef prefers to cook a few things very well. For example, their a-la-carte menu only has half a dozen desserts to choose between but they are proud

of all of them not least the brioche French Toast with vanilla ice cream which is a winner at breakfast, lunch and dinner. I retired to the courtyard which is a semi enclosed, temperature regulated space that can alter the underground vents to make it hotter when cold, and cooler when hot. The passionfruit cheese cake I chose was outstanding. The biscuit base was very thin so the crunch was still detectable but not overwhelming, the cream was fresh and rich in taste and the passionfruit top gave it the unique twist on an ageold classic sweet. We got there early so got to witness their exceptional bar snacks and carefully curated cocktails. IZU has raised the standards for dining in Doha to new heights and helped put Msheireb back on the map again all at the same time. ✤

hen Thursday evening calls for a session with the girls, we’re always on the hunt for the best places in town. Where a lot of people would be looking for a ladies’ night, we’re just in the mood for good food at a place that would match our energy. Brewskis & Grub was actually a recommendation by another friend of mine who often goes there to watch football matches - but the sports viewing is only one of many reasons to visit. This place does so much more - and does it all very well. Of course, a foodie never says no to another foodie. We set the time to meet and I dressed up casually to make sure I was comfortable for the fun time ahead.. Little did I know that my expectations were about to be exceeded! This place is nothing like the venues that I have come to know and not really love so much. Brewskis & Grub at Crowne Plaza Doha West Bay can only be described as a taproom for a welcomed night of celebrating life. A short trip to the fifth floor will introduce you to a casual and not-so-little place that has neon signs on the wall to translate the trendy vibe of the pub. As soon as we settled on a table, I truly got a chance to take a look around properly. Quotes that make you smile, a screen next to every table, instruments set up for the band, a sleek bricked counter with mirrors in the centre, tables and a serve-yourself wall of brews – it’s trendy to the core! I like the concept of the Beer Yourself trend where you can simply load your card and keep tapping it in the machine then serve yourself a pint or whatever quantity your credit allows you. A quirky place that I found myself enjoying more by the minute, the live singing just added a different groove to the entire set up. Before we knew it, the orders started coming in. The mac ‘n’ cheese fritters already had my name on them and I instantly pulled the dish towards myself. The cheesy goodness made it more than palatable and I famished half the serving, not even wanting to share it. But with the tacos on the other side of the table, this was a give and take night for us. I saw my friends relishing the starters, giving me the comfort to try them without hesitation. The Baja fish tacos were a delight with the fried fish still warm, and the sauces making it a multifarious blend of different flavours that all come together magnificently. These tacos have got to be the best I’ve tried in town. I didn’t even mind the soft taco shells - definitely a first for me. As for the pecking duck tacos, the sweet taste of the duck and its tender meat elevated the flavour instantly. It was, however, the fried brie that brought the whole dish together as you have the sweetness and tanginess of the plum duck and

apricot compote, topped with the saltiness of the fried gooey brie. Word of advice: I would recommend requesting these without the brie if your palate is not used to the strong cheese taste. When it was time to try the chicken quesadilla, I was lucky to get a share. This dish had the entire table’s approval with its decadently gooey cheese mixed with vegetables and a whole lotta perfection, highlighting this as a must-have. Throw in the zesty Brewski sliders to this mix of excellence and you have me falling in love with the pub. The melted runny cheese within the burger, adding to the piquancy of the pickled onions as they sat on a bed of lettuce would only be described as a much-welcomed treat. If I had to, I’d savour the beef slider in a jiffy. The fiery, roasted buns, as I’ve named them according to their quirky colours, was just the aesthetic perfection I needed to end the big show that was going on at my table. To top it off, the Brewskis Cookie Monster with its cakey soft base and ice creams decorated with whipped cream was as luscious as this experience could get. I was vibing with this pub at a different frequency. To put it into a few sentences, Brewskis & Grub is THE place to be if you’re looking for a boisterous little place to hang out. From live music Fridays to Karaeke Mondays to Paris Latino Tuesdays and Retro Wednesdays with drinking

LUXURY PAMPERING ON CALL As the buzzing city lights kept going and we found ourselves in between events and friends, FACT’s Jenny Guttridge went to get herself a muchneeded pampering session at the Sharq Village & Spa, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel…
W
hen you visit a spa with the intention of sinking into luxury and feel the weight of the everyday melt away, there is no better place to create that feeling than at Sharq Village Spa. From the sound of the trickling fountain water in reception to the beautiful interiors, the traditional architecture transports you to another time. I was warmly greeted by reception and offered a glass of their detox water infused with orange, ginger and mint before being shown around the spa facilities. Sharq Spa is a maze of rooms filled with calming relaxation areas, a lounge area, and varying temperature pools. I was met by my therapist, Jeep, who put me at ease straight away and was incredibly welcoming, as were all of the staff members I came across during my spa experience. Jeep showed me out of the main spa building into a collection of small houses following on from the same traditional architecture seen across the whole village resort, complimenting the vibe of a royal palace you get here from the moment you enter. If you are looking for a private pampering experience it doesn’t get more so than this, as each house is its own secluded treatment room with shower and bathroom inside, combining times past with modern luxury. The treatment was a 150-minute ‘Hydration Journey’ designed by NaturaBisse (a Spanish skincare company) in a specific product progression, promising to hydrate your skin and leave you feeling refreshed. Jeep explained the journey we would be going through and had an excellent knowledge of the brand and product range, to explain how all the benefits layer on top of one another to create the ultimate hydration for your skin.
The treatment began with Jeep washing my feet in warm water filled with flower petals before moving to the massage bed where she applied the full-body Bamboo scrub. The scrub was a combination of bamboo and ginger, to invigorate, get the blood flowing and remove dead cells. The scent left on the skin was clean with a slight spice to it, which I loved. After the scrub was complete, I showered in the treatment bathroom, changing to a different massage bed for the next stage of the treatment. The NaturaBisse Oxygen Mousse mask was applied to my whole body where I was wrapped in blankets to allow the mousse to soak in for 10 to 15 minutes. After the mask had worked its magic, I had another shower to remove the product before going back to the massage bed. I laid back down and was given a virtual reality headset to wear. A video made by NaturaBisse began playing, leading you through a mindfulness meditation of focusing on the sensations and feelings in your body, while your therapist applies pressure in corresponding time to the video. I had never experienced such an immersive experience as this and the combination of technology with the treatment was such a surprising but fantastic idea! The video lasted for seven minutes, combined with the scents from the detox aroma oil, I felt myself breathing deeper, calmer, and it definitely took me a step further into relaxation. I believe this is the first of its kind treatment in Qatar as I have honestly never been able to experience it elsewhere; further convincing me that the Sharq Spa is in a league of its own. After the virtual reality video, Jeep applied the Oxygen Perfecting Oil, which has a high concentration of micronutrients (such as spirulina and algae) aimed to detoxify the skin and improve elasticity. Once the oil was applied, I was covered in blankets again and the facial began. Jeep started fact magazine

with the All-in-One Cleansing Cream to clean my skin and remove any makeup. This was followed by The Cure Hydro-gel Toner, which had a beautiful light citrus smell to it, and its gel consistency felt soothing on my skin. Jeep then used the Glyco Peel, which is an exfoliating treatment filled with AHAs and glycolic acid to help renew the surface of the skin and improve skin texture. The peel tingled on the skin and felt itchy for around 40 seconds, which is how you know it is working! The Oxygen Concentrate was then applied all over my face and left to soak into the skin for a few minutes. The Oxygen concentrate was the part I was most excited about, to give full hydration to the skin and make my face look bright and glowing rather than dull and lifeless, which is always what happens across winter. Once the Oxygen Concentrate had soaked in the Oxygen Finishing Mask followed by the Oxygen Cream moisturiser were applied to add more hydration into the skin. Jeep also applied the Essential Shock Intense eye and lip cream, to both my lips and eyes as well as some oil-free BB cream Brilliant Sun Protection which is SPF50 to help protect my skin as it is more sensitive post-treatment. NaturaBisse and The Ritz-Carlton have designed this deeply hydrating journey with wellness and mindfulness at the forefront. Each step in the process was its own ritual taking you a level deeper into relaxation. My skin was soft and smooth, with a noticeable improvement in the texture straight away after treatment. My face felt soft and hydrated, but the real impact came two days after the treatment where I heard those words everyone hopes for after a facial ‘your skin looks amazing, you’re glowing!’. It was my first time experiencing the Hydration Journey and what a journey it was. Completely different from a usual spa experience, the use of VR as a mindfulness tool was an experience in itself. Fantastic if you’re looking for something a little different or extra special to treat yourself with. If you want to take your pampering to the next level, also indulge in the afternoon tea which can be served to you in the relaxation lounge. It was a beautiful selection of sweet treats and sandwiches, complete with fresh juices and tea. The macarons are not to be missed! ✤
