FROM THE EDITOR

May I Have a Word? MAY is the most important month of the year for one simple reason: This month it’s MY BIRTHDAY (cue fanfare and cheers)! However, before you all run out and start buying me extravagantly expensive gifts and clubbing together to throw a spectacular surprise party with performances by guest celebrities, etc., let me first say that I will actually be travelling away from the Gulf, to Thailand, to visit relatives for my birthday, so I won’t be around. Sorry to disappoint you all. Maybe next year… This does, on the other hand bring me conveniently to my next subject – travel. I am, in fact, probably making a mistake by taking my well-deserved leave so early, and not in the months of July or August when the sensible people leave, thus skipping as much of the country-sized furnace Qatar becomes during those months as possible. However, most of you will be starting to think about your summer holidays

right about now, so this month we’ve dedicated the magazine to travels far and wide, to give you some inspiration in making the right choice for your holiday. At the end of the day, we all want different things from a break – some want peace, some want parties, and some just want to see new things. One of the fantastic benefits of living in the Gulf is that we are literally in the ‘Middle’ East, and many great destinations, from Europe to the Far East, are only a few hours away by plane, so make the most of it! As for me – having taken my holiday early I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I will be spending most of the summer trying to get into the car without burning myself on some surface or other, and dashing from car to building as fast as possible so that I’m not drenched in sweat when I arrive everywhere. And failing.

Paphos, Cyprus

For those looking for the romance of summer and the natural beauty of the Mediterranean, indulge in Cyprus. With cloudless blue skies and fresh coastal beaches, Cyprus is an islande seeker’s dream. Though the temperatures are at their peak in the summer (average 22 C), dipping into the azure blue sea is an easy, fun way to cool off. Paphos’s many coastal rocks are used as jumping points for swimmers and a clever way to experience the white and blue scenery. After a day relaxing at the beach or taking part in water sports, visitors can get a history lesson through Paphos’s archeology. Walking down the streets of Beirut is to see an exhibit of a war torn buildings mixed with vibrant clubs, contemporary museums and all the beautiful tastes of Lebanese and Armenian cuisine. Though Lebanon’s Israel-Lebanon conflict reaches as far back as the 1940s, the Six Day War in 1967 is deeply steeped in the county’s present-day cultural scene – the subject is a common theme with Lebanese musicians and artists. Damaged buildings from the war next to posh contemporary galleries is what makes Beirut such a rare treasure. Beirut’s nightlife is also a famed feature, if you can keep up with it! hen people think of Qatar, the name Pearl – Qatar is often one of the first to spring to everyone’s minds. The location is one of the Middle East’s most glamorous addresses, and it’s set to come alive this month. Shut your eyes and picture the carnival – complete with floats, colours, music, performers, screaming kids having a whale of a time… well this May will see it all come true! Taking place at Porto Arabia’s boardwalk, the organisers are promising visitors that this carnival will be like witnessing “a world of magic”. Coming from all over the world are musicians, performers, jugglers, street art artists and businesses who are all looking to promote culture and diversity through the city. The Pearl – Qatar prides itself on celebrating its multicultural community and no event

could do it better than this one. Every retail store in the area will be soaking up the atmosphere and embracing the musical mood. Outside there will be a main stage set up for the performers to do their thing, including trumpeters trumpeting and singers singing (surprisingly). The top performers include a jazz saxophonist who will undoubtedly wow the crowd with his talents. Musicians are set to fly in from around the region as well as from dance groups from Russia, Sweden, France, Britain and North America. This is no small affair people – this is set to be one of the best multicultural events of the year. Another thing to look out for are the amazing costumes that will be parading around the boardwalk. No carnival is complete without at least a crowd of people wearing wigs, big dresses, colourful costumes

So when can you get involved in this? The festivities are set to run daily from 6pm on weekdays and 3pm on the weekends. Whether you want a fun family day out or you’re perhaps looking to grab hold of that inner child (it is hidden in all of us, don’t deny it!), then you can even get your face painted and make some balloon shaped animals…. Ok, let’s perhaps leave that to the kids. But in all seriousness, this is a good chance to get out of the house and get in that sunshine. We can’t enjoy it all summer so make the most of it now. SO OBVIOUS!

Big Brother Spying on Maids

A recent report highlighted a trend in which many families are installing hidden cameras in their homes to spy on their domestic servants, with the aim of catching them out doing something wrong. Aside from the fact that this is a blatant violation of privacy, it also signals a sinister movement towards overbearing employers punishing often already overworked maids for perceived slights such as, say taking a break during a busy day. Sure, there are instances where domestic servants do commit crime, but in the vast majority of cases a loyal and hardworking maid can be ensured simply by treating them with dignity and respect, and not with draconian measures like surveillance!

Qatar Bails Out Japanese Fishing Industry

Now, we’re all for charitable causes and helping those in need, but in this case we’re not so sympathetic. Qatar recently sent $50 million in aid to resurrect the Japanese Fishing Industry – an industry responsible for the senseless mass slaughter of whales, dolphins and sharks, often for just a small piece of the creatures and the rest is dumped back in the sea, as well as blatantly flouting international laws and ruthlessly overfishing the oceans with industrial trawlers and seriously depleting fish stocks. In our opinion, this was an industry that could have done with a time out...

CAN’T BELIEVE IT

The famous French climber Alain Robert, famous for scaling structures around the world without the aid of safety ropes or harnesses, recently turned his attention to one of Qatar’s iconic buildings – The TORCH Doha Hotel. Climbing the building in 1 hour 33 minutes, he adds The TORCH to a long list of conquered buildings, which includes the Empire State Building, New York, the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and, of course, the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Well done Alain!

very girl likes to wear high heels every once in a while. Sometimes though, when you are sat behind a desk all day, or perhaps having a really rubbish week, the last thing you want to do is totter around town or your office in your sky-high stilettos. I am a huge fan of beach parties. I went to Sandance in Dubai, and I have also been one to favour the beach parties at the InterContinental Doha. This month there is one more coming up, one to mark the ‘last dance’ before the summer heat kicks

in and leaves us melting into little puddles on the floor. Saying this though, girls will be doing their utmost to make sure they look as good as possible. I am talking fake tan (despite it being great weather outside), copious amounts of waterproof eyeliner and mascara (don’t want it running now do we?!) and the tightest, brightest, shortest clothes to make sure we stand out from the crowd. Don’t get me wrong, I am generalising, so apologies to those who genuinely don’t give a… Anyway, back to my question. Time

and time again I have been to these events and every night, without fail, I have been stood on by someone wearing heels… ON THE BEACH!! It is hard enough trying to walk around after a few drinks on concrete let alone sand. Sorry girls, you can’t get much more ridiculous than that. To be fair, it adds a whole new dimension to beach partying when you have a workout while trying to stay standing up. Watch out for the girl slapping her flip-flop around some tangoed girl’s face this month – that will be me.

Everyone needs a good laugh - so what is the line-up for this month?

T

here are plenty of musical acts that take place all over Qatar. Sometimes you are often so spoilt for choice that you end up missing out on the good ones. Well make sure you don’t miss out on this one. The Ramada Plaza Doha is hosting a night that will be sure to make any opera fan happy. The Celtic Tenors are set to perform on May 19 and it will be the perfect night to listen to a bold mixture of classical, folk, Irish and pop tunes. The men behind the voices belong to Matthew Gilsenan, James Nelson and Daryl Simpson – three men who are brought together through their serious love of music. This trio have already earned a top reputation. Known for their unique wit, characters and

musical tones, anyone watching this performance will see the vitality and variety oozing out of them. What is different about these guys is that they are known for pioneering their own version of ‘cool’ and continue to “reinvent the whole tenor idiom” by adding twists and breaking the traditional tenor mould. This is an approach that is seldom seen on stage, so they are well worth the watch. Tickets are QR350 per person but with this you are given a host of treats. Everyone automatically receives a threecourse meal and a beverage package. The doors open at 7pm and the dinner and live music starts an hour later. GO: Call 4428 1555 or log on to www. ramadaplazadoha.com to make your reservation.

T

hose who are familiar with comedy and anyone who fancies a seriously good laugh needs to check out this event. The InterContinental Doha, in collaboration with Craic Attack, is bringing back the top class comedy show featuring the stars from the official British TV show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” What first started as radio programme, this show was quickly moved to television in 1988 for Channel 4 as a 10 series run. Following the conclusion of the British run in 1998, ABC began airing a version with the same name for American audiences, which lasted a whopping 10 seasons! The show consisted of a panel of four performers who create characters, scenes and songs on the spot, in the style of short-form improvisation games. Topics are based on either audience suggestions or prompts from the host. Stephen Frost, Andy Smart, Ian Coppinger, Steve Steen and Niall Ashdown, regular members of the comedy store players, have been making people laugh all over the world for years, and bring to every performance stage their own brand of irreverent improvised comedy. Whether you have had a tough week at work or are in need of a good cheering up, then you can definitely rely on these guys to make your day a whole lot better. So you shout it out and they act it out, no safety nets involved! These guys are fast, funny and furious. The Metro, a London based publication, said they were “naturally irredeemably hilarious,” while Time Out New York said, “These guys rock!” Having performed at the regular Edinburgh and Glastonbury festivals, they have just returned from a sell-out run in New York and they are NOT to be missed. GO: Book your tickets by calling 4484 4444.

Agadir, Morocco

Agadir is in the southern part of Morocco, and it’s where the Atlantic breeze ensures comfort while you suntan. With a tenkilometre beach and developed coastal road, you can spend your days strolling along the sea front with its Palm-lined boulevards. The town is clustered with fish stalls, displaying freshly caught sea life that can be quickly prepared in front of you, typically accompanied with salad and bread for a reasonable price. With sun shining more than 300 days a year in Agadir, surfers from Europe typically flock to the town to take advantage the city’s rays and crystal blue seas. There are a number of surfing schools for beginners or those who want to further hone their skills. Lessons can range from day to day or weekly full-board packages that include unlimited practice time with instructors at hand. With a variety of surf camps in the area, you can be sure to find a diverse group of surfers sharing the sea’s waves. For a family dining experience, restaurants such as Rotisserie Nahda offer an alcohol-free, unfazed quaint neighbourhood vibe, where you can feed your palette with succulent lamb tagine and cous cous under the starry night sky. When it’s time to get away from the beach, Jardin de Olhao is one of Agadir’s most exquisite parks. The gravel paths and wooden walkways guide you to serene tropical gardens while passing berber-style décor. Agadir is a place to relax surrounded by beauty and be seen riding the waves.

Packed with summer activities in the city and day trips to well-preserved historic towns like Edinburgh, there’s no limit of things to do. Glasgow’s investment in cultural arts has paid off as a tourist attraction. The city has more than 20 major museums and galleries, most offering free admission. Kelvinggrove Art Gallery and Museum is Scotland’s most popular attraction, bringing international artists and an increasing tourist population – all reasons why Lonely Planet ranked Glasgow as one of the world’s top 10 tourist destinations. Glasgow’s overwhelming summer festival list seeks to please all interests – Glasgow Science Festival, Cinema in the Park, Bard in the Botanics, and the list goes on. There’s a reason for Glasgow’s summer itinerary. After the economic decline from World War I, the city restructured itself with a post-war boom that lasted through the 1950s. Another stint in economic decline in the 60s and 70s due to overseas competition put Glasgow back in a slump. But then the city bounced back in force with its ‘Miles Better Campaign’ that rebranded the city as a culturally rich destination, securing large-scale projects like the Glasgow Science Centre, a number of cultural festivals and urban development projects. Beyond the new cultural presence, Glasgow still preserves its historical asthetics. Though Glasgow streets aren’t adorned with an array of royal castles like its neighbour Edinburgh, you’re only about an hour’s drive or a shorter train ride from some of Scotland’s most extravagant castles. Shakespeare mentioned Cawdor Castle in ”Macbeth,” securing it in literary history. Once

a barricade in the 1300s, it now showcases a 17th century interior with a detailed tapestry room with a four-poster bed, draped with thick red curtains and walls hung with Renaissance tapestries that illustrates the era’s aristocrat lifestyle. Edinburgh Castle sits on an extinct volcano that overlooks the city of Edinburgh, near Glasgow, and holds historical stories of secrets, betrayal and affairs. One guide described the “Barred window above the fireplace where King James IV spied on those gathered in the Great Hall.” It’s by far one of the most visited attractions in Scotland. Besides being rich in royal history (David’s Tower, Mons Meg, Queen Anne Building St. Margaret’s Chapel), it’s a place where you can watch grown men re-enact period-era scenes in costume and waving weaponry. Once you’re back in the city, eat crayfish, apple and baby gem salad with Marie Rose dressing or Grilled seabass fillet with risotto Nero, fennel, confit lemon and crispy calamari at Red Onion Restaurant. Cleverly, Glasgow knows it has too much going on in the summer, which is why you can find everything on this site for more guidance – www.seeglasgow. com.

Reykjavik, Iceland

If you want more bang for your buck, Iceland is the way to go. Iceland’s warm, mild summers are prime for lounging in one of 170 hot springs, hiking the vastness of Landmannalaugar or situating yourself at the famed glacier lagoon. Unfortunately for Iceland the economic recession hit the country’s currency, the Krona, pretty hard – almost a one-punch knockout. There are constant debates on whether Iceland should kill the Krona. But Iceland’s unfortunate trails are a traveller’s blessing. The Qatari Dirham can go a long way to secure you a VIP vacation status for a fraction of the price! Most think of Viking warriors when Iceland is mentioned. In the 9th 11th centuries Viking culture ruled the land. Though Vikings were also craftsman and traders, the most memorable were the pirates and warriors who raided Western Europe in quest for land and settlement. An image of brawny light haired men in brown furry cloth and golden, pointy hats comes to mind. If you’re lucky and get to visit Iceland this summer you will witness those images during the Viking Festival in Hafnarfjorour, where more than 100 Vikings get together for a June weekend of entertainment and activities – but no worries, piracy shouldn’t be on the itinerary. If anything, it’s perfect for watching a unique group of characters pass by

18

during an outdoor lunch. Iceland’s crowning glory is its natural environment. Year round, glacier tours show these natural wonders to new visitors. Tours such as The Golden Circle and Glacier Walk start with a boat tour, giving you panoramic views of aging, sculptured ice. From there the tour leads you to the ancient Viking parliament, where your guide will give you some Viking tales of the landmark Þingvellir National Park. Then you’ll feel the stream from a hot spring and get splashed by one of Iceland’s iconic waterfalls. After the tour, gratify your hunger with some Icelandic skyr, a traditional thick yogurt and harðfiskur, dried fish with butter.

Stay Known for its Art Deco style, Hotel Borg is simple, clean and homey (framed photos of Iceland’s boats and glaciers adorn the walls). Across the street is a park, usually with Icelanders laying out on the grass. It only takes a short walk to get to a line of restaurants, shops and boutiques.

Salalah, Oman It’s paradise in an Arabian desert. During the months of the Khareef, the monsoon season when a mist descents on the surrounding mountains filling the valleys with water, lush greenery allows visitors to breathe in the freshness of Salalah. The Khareef takes place from around June to September, and is the busiest time of year in Salalah. The captivating smell of frankincense permeates this southern Omani town. This is not a place to bathe in the summer sun; it’s where you go to cool off. When most of the Gulf states reach temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in the summer, Salalah has an average of 28 degrees. These balmy temperatures make for a welcome escape for those who long for coolness and calm during a sultry summer without an expensive flight. If you take a walk or drive to the coastline warm water geysers splash from the ground, ensuring playtime for children and laughs for adults. Salalah is home to the frankincense tree, a proud attribute to Omani rich heritage that connects a variety of religions. Thousands of years ago frankincense was worth its weight in gold. Take a trip to the low-key market and you can buy these precious scents to take home, along with some traditional Omani jewellery

Istanbul, Turkey

Turkey is bustling with tourists in the summer months, and it certainly has many reasons why. A day’s exploration of the Princes’ Islands, having tea at the Topkapi Palace and rocking to the city’s chaotic and yet exciting nightlife keeps tourists on their feet. Istanbul may not be the coolest as far as temperature is concerned, but it’s easy not to be bothered when you’re walking alongside the Bosphorus. The 20-mile long waterway connects the sea of Marmara to the Black Sea. Morning walks along the Bosphorus is a fresh, yet fishy wake up call. Touring down the port is also a great place to grab a freshly grilled sardine sandwich before getting on the metro to Sultanahmet, where you’re get your fill of museums, palaces and souvenir shops. Once there, walk to Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque for its blue tiles that embellish the walls of its interior. A fusion of Byzantine elements and Islamic architecture, it’s considered a majestic splendour to behold. The massive courtyard feels as large as the mosque itself, but it’s the interior that puts many in awe. More than 20,000 handmade ceramic tiles engraved with a variety of tulip designs line the mosque’s interior. Features such as the heavy iron chain that hangs in the upper part of the court richly illustrates some of the mosque’s history. A good tour guide will tell you that sultan was the only one to enter the courtyard on horseback. The sultan had to lower his head under the chain to avoid getting hit, but it was also to ensure a sense of the ruler’s humility in the face of divinity. A couple of blocks down the street, the Topkai Palace is where grandeur overwhelms the eyes and captures the heart. Bountiful with lush greenery, hundreds of posh, decorated rooms and a terrace café (madly expensive), the palace smacks of royalty. You can easily spend the rest of the afternoon searching through the artefacts and reading the history of each room. But if you’d rather not, Sultan Ahmet District also offers Haga Sophia, Byzantine Hippodrome, Great Palace Moasic Museum and a row of delightful cafés that satisfy urges for a Turkish doner, tea and shisha. For a full-day adventure, take a short ferry ride to the charming Princes’ Islands. The islands became home

20

to exiled princes and other royalty during the Byzantime era. Later, family members of the exiled Ottoman sultan also sought refuge on the nine islands, which is what coined its name. Büyükada, which means big island, has the most fame and probably the biggest tourist footprint. Leon Trotsky lived in Büyükada for four years after being deported from the Soviet Union – he picked it as his first residence in exile. The islands are blissfully quiet, due to the lack of cars. Horse buggies and bikes are the only means of transport on the islands. Historic homes are well preserved as well as their gardens that bloom and burst with vivid colours. On the island, tourists and city dwellers lay back on restaurant patios and café benches, sipping a cold drink (or mocktail) and snacking on Turkish delight. Once back to the city, cool your mind and heat your body in a hamam. After all that relaxing, the party happens on Iskele Street and Kadife Street on the Asian side. If you prefer to stay on the European end, Taksim is crowded with pubs, fancy bookstores with wine and balconies filled with people cheering to life with a shot of raki, Turkey’s national drink.

Kuala Lumpur, Mayalasia

A melting pot of religions, races and natural wonders, Malayasia heightens the senses and calms the nerves. Originally developed for mining, Kuala Lumpur has embraced its gastronomic diversity and low prices as key tourist attractions. With its diverse population, an upsurge of festivals fills the summer months. Malays only account for 57 percent of the population. From May to June, there’s the Sabah Fest Cultural Extravaganza, Borneo International Jazz Festival, Colours of Malaysia, and the list goes on. The rich marine life in Malaysia also allures those who love to dive and float with exotic fishes. Malaysia has over 200 islands, so there’s no shortage of paradise. Pulau Pangkor is a short distance from Kuala Lumpur; its sandy beaches and clear waters work perfectly for water-sports or just a day to bask in the sun. But even if splashing in the water doesn’t amuse you, the colourful streets of Kuala Lumpur will sink you into wonder. The Indo-Pacific Basin houses a various species of turtles, bizarre Frogfish, pipefish and schooling Hammerhead sharks. Scuba diving is a much loved and common activity, and dive centres are plentiful. Here’s a tip: buy a package that includes lessons, food and accommodation. That way there’s no worries while you’re in the sea. Back on ground solid ground, take in Kuala Lumpur’s artistic streets. Home to Baba Nyonya food, you can take this piece of heaven for as little as 3.50 (MYR) Malayasian Ringgitt (about 4QR) per dish. These traditional dishes are typically served in Melaka historical quaint cafés and shop houses. Kelantan also serves Malay food, rich in colour, flavour and spice. Beef Rendang (Spicy Beef in Coconut Sauce) is one of the country’s signature dishes. More often than not the sweet savour of coconut will be in most Malay cuisines. The Breathtaking

Beauty of the Desert Rising up out of the Emirati desert like some kind of mystical Arabian palace, the Anatara Qasr Al Sarab resort manages the difficult task of capturing the very essence and beauty of the desert, but without any of the hardship…

T

he drive out to the Anantara Qasr Al Sarab resort is a journey in itself. A two-hour car ride takes you deep into the Emirati desert, and the rolling sand dunes in various hues of red, orange and grey increase in size until they tower over the narrow stretch of tarmac running through them, which is constantly under threat of being buried by them. Suddenly, a sign appears, and the car makes a turning on to another road that snakes its way up and over the colossal dunes, taking you even further into the unspoilt desert. Then, a gateway appears on a ridge, and as you drive through it the Anantara Qasr Al Sarab resort appears before you like something out of a Hollywood movie boasting Arabian princes and warring tribes. You may feel that we are exaggerating the effect this journey and the sudden arrival has on you, but we do not overstate – you can almost hear

22

the ambient Arabic music that would play as such a movie scene unfolded. Built in the Liwa Desert, which is the ancestral land of the Abu Dhabi ruling family, the Al Nahyan dynasty, the hotel was built and is owned by the TDIC, which is the ruling family’s tourism investment company. Because of where it’s built, the hotel has special significance for Abu Dhabi’s rulers, and as a result, every effort has been made to make this an unforgettable experience for visitors to the Emirate. And it shows. The whole resort is designed and built to represent the very best of Arabian culture – from the architecture and décor right down to the authentic and original antique artefacts that adorn every shelf, corner and tabletop. International artists were commissioned to create the thousands of Arabian-themed artworks that hang on every wall. As you enter, you’re greeted by the extremely hospitable staff, who offer you a refreshing beverage upon arrival in traditional Middle Eastern style. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch one of the hotel’s falcons in the lobby, which is happy to be perched on your arm for a once-in-a-lifetime photograph. Just don’t be alarmed when he gives you a gentle peck as you stroke his feathers! In front of the hotel, massive rolling sand dunes stretch off in to the distance alongside either side of a sprawling valley, which happens to be a source of water for local wildlife and

therefore attracts desert gazelle, foxes and the like. This breathtaking vista is visible from almost every point in the hotel, as every single room and space, from the guest suites right down to the meeting rooms and even the spa treatment rooms are built with windows facing the view. And what a view! It is constantly changing as the sun moves across the sky, with the colours of the sand dunes and the shadows they cast changing along with it. Witness the dunes change from a pale orange-pink in the early morning to vivid orange and yellow in the bright midday light to deep orange and grey as the sun sets behind them. You’ll find yourself gazing out at them constantly as you wander around the hotel. The effect of the whole resort is mesmerising. There is an overwhelming sense of relaxation and retreat – you feel cut off from the rest of the world, and ensconced in a world of Middle Eastern luxury.

Desert Adventures

It would be a shame to stay in the middle of the desert and not head out into the wilderness for some fun! The hotel offers a range of activities designed to give you an enjoyable experience of the Liwa Desert, ranging from adventure activities like dune bashing, camel trekking, mountain biking and archery to more relaxing activities like the desert walk, the falcon show and desert yoga. Our first activity was the dune bashing, an extremely popular tourist activity in the UAE, and an absolute must for anyone who hasn’t done it before.

You would not believe what these impressive vehicles are capable of in the skilled hands of the drivers, as they steer them up impossibly steep sand dunes and then, to your horror, drive them over even steeper drops on the other side. It’s a white knuckle ride, and not for the faint-hearted! More sedate is the camel trek – the most exciting part is trying to stay on them when the move from sitting to standing! They then take you for a leisurely stroll to a desert rest stop, where you’ll be treated to a stunning sunset and refreshments before heading back. This trip makes for fantastic photos, and you won’t get a truer taste of a bygone era in the Arabian desert. For the fitter readers among you, if you don’t mind an early start, then the desert walk is a unique experience – 5.30am sees you following a guide on foot off over the sand dunes into the middle of nowhere. Make sure you bring decent boots for this, unless you like your shoes filled with sand! It’s also no walk in the park – trekking on sand requires a lot more effort, as your feet sink in as you walk. However, if you do decide to do

it, you’ll be treated to a stunning sunrise in the vast, silent emptiness of the desert – a humbling experience you won’t forget in a hurry!

What Else?

Even if you decide not to do any activities for a day or two, and simply relax around the hotel, then you couldn’t find a nicer place to do so! The pool is a treat for both kids and adults, and in deference to the simmering desert heat, the staff regularly bring round complimentary water to keep you refreshed throughout the day. The hotel’s various restaurants and bars round off the experience nicely. Whether it’s an idyllic breakfast on the outdoor terrace of the Al Waha restaurant gazing out at the sand dunes as the sun rises, or enjoying the cool desert breeze at night on the rooftop terrace of the Suhail Bar and Grill, where you can also enjoy cocktail sundowners in the late afternoon, or a delicious Mediterranean dinner in the Ghadeer poolside restaurant, you won’t be disappointed anywhere you decide to visit. However, when having breakfast on the Al Waha terrace, watch out for the cheeky little birds hopping about nearby. Surprisingly fearless, you’ll find your breakfast has gone missing if you turn your head for more than a few seconds! Following dinner, a romantic walk around the resort by starlight is a perfect way to round off an enchanting day, and any walk should take in the falaj path, meandering right down to the edge of the sands, where you can stand on the viewing platform and gaze up at the stars, and reflect on the beauty of the Liwa Desert. In the Anantara Qasr Al Sarab resort, the Abu Dhabi government have sought to create the perfect example of Arabian romanticism – a flawless experience of the mystical desert. And in this aim, they have absolutely succeeded. No visitor to this resort will leave disappointed.

Hint: Transfer to the Hotel Due to its remote desert location, it is a two-hour drive from Abu Dhabi airport to the hotel. The hotel will offer you its own limousine service, and while it is nice being greeted by a driver in arrivals with your name on a plaque and driven to the hotel in a Lexus ES350 or Lincoln Navigator, it does come at a hefty price. If you want to save yourself many hundreds of Dirhams, a local taxi will do the job just as well, if not in quite as much style. However, you will need to print out a map for them to follow (available on the hotel’s website), as most don’t know where it is! Watch out for the taxi stewards, who will offer you a “fixed price” taxi which is also much more expensive than the standard cab.

While You’re Going That Way…

On the way to the Qasr Al Sarab resort, about an hour into the journey a surprising sight will greet you – a giant 1970’s Range Rover on stilts towering over the road! This signals the entrance to the Emirates National Auto Museum, located in a giant silver pyramid behind aforementioned giant Range Rover. This museum is actually the private car collection of the ‘Rainbow Sheikh’, Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nayhan, and one of the largest collections in the world at over 200 cars. It is also one of the most unusual – inside you will see a giant mobile home in the shape of Earth, a massive replica of a vintage Dodge Power Wagon as featured on an episode of Top Gear from the 1990s, and various cars of all shapes, sizes and colours, hence his nickname the Rainbow Sheikh. As you’ll never have reason to be out in this patch of desert again, you really should seize the opportunity to view this truly unique collection of automotive eccentricity.

Photography is one area of our lives that everyone can relate to. Whether we take a quick snapshot on our phones, or commission a professional to help remember a special moment, photography is and always will remain an important factor in documenting our lives. Zara de Haldevang finds out more on the upcoming ‘Andares’ Photography Exhibition, set to start on May 1.

W

hat promised to to be one of the next best exhibitions to take place in Qatar this month is the ‘Andares: Peruvian Paso Horse’ exhibition at the Qatar Photographic Society Exhibition Hall. Sponsored by the International Band of Qatar (IBQ), the collection will be held under the patronage of the Embassy of the Republic of Peru in Qatar and its Ambassador, H.E. Mr Julio Florian. So who is the artist? Ana Maria Garcia, the talent behind the images, was born in 1954 in Miraflores, Peru, and has been heavily involved in the world of photography for her entire life. Having earned a place at the Global Education Group of the University of Florida, she was granted her professional

degree in Fine Arts and Artistic Design. In 2012, her photograph “Efímero Susto”, taken in Isla Grande-Ancón from the photographic exhibition “VOCES del MAR”, was nominated by National Geographic. Currently residing in San Diego, California, Ana continues developing creative processes in photography, communication, and graphic design as well as digital retouching and restoration. Under the title of ‘Andares’, Ana’s exhibition provides spectators with a glimpse of the famous Paso horse. Her work perfectly captures these iconic creatures in their natural state and her audience and fans can appreciate her profound artistic sensibility and unique comprehension of the photographic lens.

Ana’s photographs take you on a journey away from the generic ceremonial show arenas and instead venture deep into the quietness of the horses’ worlds. Originating from Peru, the Paso horse descended from Spanish, Arab, Berber and Andalusian routes over 400 years ago. In addition to its imperial bloodline, the horse is famous for its gait and temperament, nobility and pride, beauty and excellence, thanks to over four centuries of patient and dedicated breeding. The Managing Director of IBQ, George Nasra, said, “At IBQ we are pleased to take part in this high profile photo art exhibition. It is indeed a privilege to be associated with Katara, the Embassy of the Republic of Peru, the Qatar Photographic Society and the Peruvian Paso Horse Association. This event will showcase the Peruvian artist Ana Maria’s dazzling artistic talent that features Peru’s national emblem, the Paso horse. IBQ’s sponsorship of the exhibition denotes our commitment to support events from all disciplines which we believe enhance our community to spread cultural and social awareness.” To support Ana’s artistic talents, IBQ has aligned itself with numerous entities and organizations to reach out to various parts of the community through initiatives and endeavours that serve to underline the significance of arts and culture for the welfare of society in Qatar.

Nothing But The Beat

By David Guetta WHAT’S IT LIKE:

In what is Guetta’s most ambitious project to date, Nothing But The Beat boasts a frankly staggering line-up of collaborative artists that reads like a “who’s who” of current #1 hitmakers from the world of pop and urban music. Just to make the point, we’re going to list some: Akon, Nikki Minaj, Taio Cruz, Flo Rida, Ludacris, Usher, (*takes a breath) Will.i.am, Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown, Lil’ Wayne, and so on, and so forth... In terms of mashing genres together, nobody does it better than Guetta (now THAT’s a tagline if ever we heard one!). Is it pop, is it dance, is it urban? NO, it’s David Guetta, and he’s riding the wave of superstardom like a world-class name-dropper. In some places, the collaborations work well, for example with the Australian singer Sia, one of the lesser known names on the tracklist, on the rousing anthem ‘Titanium’. However, on others, it merely sounds like a DJ’s attempts to remix existing pop/hip-hop offerings, layering radio-friendly urban vocals over uplifting dance backing tracks, to mediocre effect. While it’ll undoubtedly be a smash hit, with the tracks being overplayed on dance floors around the world, it is ultimately a bit hit and miss.

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

After a three-year hiatus, brought on largely by difficulties that arose from conflicts between his two record labels, Geffen and Aftermath, former G-Unit member and West Coast rapper returns with this, his fifth studio album, and a sizeable 21 track-strong odyssey of tough, no-holds-barred, gritty rap music. The conflicts which dragged production of this LP out for three years are evident in the lyrics of Game’s tracks, and the frustration and emotion add a tangible element to the rapper’s music. What’s refreshing in these days where urban music is becoming increasingly mainstream is an artist who keeps it real - Game pulls no punches on The R.E.D. Album, and the lyrics are certainly NOT for kids (although thousands will undoubtedly buy the album). Game is in his element when he’s being the exact opposite of ‘radio-friendly’.

By Pixie Lott

This is the first solo effort by Joe Jonas, of the Jonas Brothers, and as you would expect from a highly marketable pop star with a considerable amount of music industry weight behind him, Fastlife is a very polished affair, with the finest production talent that money can buy. It is therefore a given that the album will boast songs that are chart-friendly, catchy and up-beat, and Fastlife certainly delivers in this regard. Opening track ‘All This Time’ oozes that feelgood factor, and ‘Fastlife’ brings the RnB touch. Dance music electro: Check. Timberlake-esque RnB flava: Check. Love-torn balladry: Check. The album literally ticks all the boxes as you name them - a perfect marketing ploy. However, what sets apart a pop album in these highly competitive days is originality, which unfortunately this album somewhat predictably lacks.

C

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

Doe-eyed pop songstress Pixie Lott rose to fame with her #1 debut single, ‘Mama Do’, and maintained it with an equally successful follow-up single ‘Boys & Girls’, from her debut album Turn It Up. Both singles boasted catchy and relatively fresh sounds delivered in Lott’s super-smiley style that proved a potent recipe. However, the buzz and magic that infused Lott’s first album sadly seems to be missing from the second, though it’s hard to pinpoint why. There is still a line-up of relatively fresh tracks that don’t recycle the usual cliches, but for some reason all of them fail to grab the attention the way her first two singles did. ‘All About Tonight’ does get close, with a dance-floor friendly backing melody and feelgood lyrics, and her bawdy rasp works well on ‘What Do You Take Me For’, with the obligatory rapper cameo in the shape of Pusha T, but all in all, not as good as the first.

Biographical

All The Madmen By Clinton Heylin

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

In All The Madmen, author Heylin sets out to find a common thread between the creative genuis of British rock n’ roll’s greatest minds, and the underlying mental problems many of them suffered from. From schizophrenia to paranioa to depression and drug addiction, Heylin attempts to establish a link between the troubled mind of the rock star and some of the most iconic music ever made. He does this using extensive knowledge of the subjects he writes about, and many interesting anecdotes about the bizarre behaviour of the stars involved. It is also backed up by commentary from the people who were there and saw it firsthand, in all its colourful, gritty and insane glory.

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

This book looks like it could be one of the most exciting chronicles of British rock n’ roll in the swingin’ sixties yet released. However, it’s a very ambitious project to try to find a common thread running through the various psyches of Britain’s more eccentric, drug-addled and troubled rock stars that led to such great music being created, and it’s a project that Heylin ultimately fails at. It is, therefore, something of an anti-climax, which is a shame. There are some great anecdotes and insights into these artistic B minds, but there is also a gaping hole where a great underlying truth promises to be.

The Arab Spring

Various Pets Alive & Dead

By Peter Carey

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

by Toby Manhire

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

A horologist (clock expert) working in the Swindon museum, Catherine Gehrig, is devastated by the loss of her lover. In sympathy, the curator of the musuem tries to distract her from her grief by moving her to a new department in the museum and tasking her with reconstructing a mysterious 19th Century mechanical device. At first, she is irritated by the task, but as the job develops, it begins to consume her...

The Arab Spring is a collection of some of the most well-known and powerful articles from printed media covering the events of the Arab Spring as they unfolded. It also includes a selection edited by Manhire of UK newspaper the Guardian’s live blog that gave regular in-depth coverage and opinion on the events as they happened. The articles come from journalists, bloggers and even citizens who lived through the Spring.

This multi-layered story is so packed with underlying messages and allegory that sometimes you feel like you’re reading two books at the same time - and in essence, you are. As Catherine’s story is told, it runs parallel to the story of the 19th Century aristocrat who built the strange mechanical creature that Catherine is reconstructing. As the stories unfold, the connections between the two become more and more apparent, until Catherine begins to learn hidden truths about her own life that she never suspected. While this sounds like a complicated feat of writing to pull off, Carey’s literary skills B+ are such that he pulls it off well, making for a great novel.

This is perhaps the most comprehensive chronicle of the amazing events that unfolded last year and changed the face of Middle Eastern politics forever. Because of the varied sources of material that makes up the book, you get a much broader perspective of what happened throughout the revolution than you would if you just looked at information coming from one source. Told with the drama of an unfolding story, together with the analysis, argument, insight and eloquence of the Guardian’s best writers and contributors, Arab Spring will provide invaluable insight into the B biggest political upheaval in recent history.

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

By Marina Lewycka

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

Retired teachers Marcus and Doro are ex-hippies who still hold on to their ideals of free love and communal sharing, whilst firmly rejecting the ideas of capitalism and material wealth. However, their son Serge, who they think is studying a Phd, is actually an investment banker earning a fortune, a fact which he is constantly trying to hide from them. Their other daughter Clara is a primary school teacher, who is caught in the middle of meeting her parents’ expectations and taking part in her brother’s charade. And finally, there is the adopted daughter, Oolie, who has Down’s Syndrome, and wants to move into her own place.

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

A thoroughly enjoyable book from beginning to end, Lewycka deftly matches the conflicting ideals of the various characters in the book with humour and sympathy, never judging any of them, but gently ribbing all of them. The characters are rich and detailed, and you will warm to each of them instantly, and the story is both heartwarming and entertaining, with B+ Lewycka’s attention to detail firmly drawing you in. TOP FILMS SHOWING THIS MONTH IN QATAR

ON SCREEN “Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s SUPERMAN!” “It can’t be, this is a Marvel Comics movie!”

The Avengers D: Joss Whedon C: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L Jackson

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

S.H.I.E.L.D., a government agency concerned with global security, puts together a team of super-human heroes, led by Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson), tasked with protecting the Earth from Thor’s brother, Loki, an evil god hell-bent on the subjugation of mankind. All sorts of hammer throwing, car hurling and building smashing ensues.

34

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING:

The most eagerly-awaited superhero movie of recent times brings together the whole collection of successfully-revived Marvel comic book characters - The Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor - as an epic team of superheroes who, if they “can’t save the world, can at least avenge it.” (see where the theme is going here?) If another dose of the hilarious dry wit and sarcastic quips of Iron Man alter-ego Tony Stark, played brilliantly by Robert Downey Jr., aren’t enough to draw you alone, then

the combined heroics of the rest of the ensemble should add enough icing to the cake to make this movie an irresistible draw. However, the cherry on top comes in the form of Samuel L Jackson, who plays S.H.I.E.L.D boss Nick Fury, the character responsible for bringing the crew together, and Scarlett Johansson, who wears a lot of tight outfits, and we can’t really remember what she actually does in the movie...

Battleship D: Peter Berg C: Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson, Rihanna

Rihanna... army uniform... giant machine gun... Well, WE’re sold!

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

A group of US Navy warships are doing a routine naval exercise, when they come across an unknown object in the water. When they move in to investigate, the colossal object violently springs to life, and the Naval group suddenly find themselves isolated and locked into combat with a completely unknown force. Plus, Rihanna fires a big machine gun....

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING:

While the whole aliensinvading-earth-and-attemptingto-eradicate-mankind thing has kind of been done before, to put it mildly, if it’s done well it can still be a whole lot of fun. And this is one movie that looks like it has been done well. In some parts, the animations of the giant alien ships can look distinctly Transformer-esque, but the concept still manages to be different enough to carry the movie on its own. Look out for epic disaster scenes in which whole cities are reduced to rubble - that’s always a hoot, regardless of precedent! Johnny Depp: Gives the whole ‘loser’ sign thing a new level of creepy!

God Bless America

is a dark comedy in which a terminally-ill man decides that he’s had enough of what America has become, and decides to go on a murderous rampage to annihilate all the most annoying segments of society, including spoiled teen brats, ‘Idol’ contestants, and so on. He’s joined on his rampage by a teenage social outcast who shares his sentiments. Bring it on... The office father-daughter day took an ugly turn when the boss laughed at little Janie’s dad’s sweater...

Dark Shadows

D: Tim Burton C: Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Helena Bonham Carter

Men in Black III sees Agent J (Will Smith) travel back in time to the MiB agency in the 60’s to save his future partner Agent K’s (Tommy Lee Jones) younger self (Josh Brolin) from being assassinated by an alien from the future and changing history, thus altering the future... Got all that? Good. “With this Magnun .357, I thee wed...”

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: In a movie based on the much-loved 60’s Gothic soap opera, Barnabas Collins was a nobleman turned into a vampire and imprisoned by a witch whose love he spurned. Many years later, he’s set free, and returns to his ancestral home to find the dysfunctional family that are his descendants, who need his protection as much as he needs theirs. WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING:

So many, many reasons, but the main ones are Tim Burton, his wife Helena Bonham Carter, who makes dark and creepy delicious, the reforming of the triumvarate of horror with the addition of Johnny Depp for the first time since Sweeney Todd, the added zest of Michelle Pfeiffer and Eva Green, and lashings of dark comedy, and you have what looks to be the perfect recipe for one of the movies of the year! Enhance your holidays this summer with some awesome travel gadgetry aimed at making your trip more enjoyable…

Victorinox Slim Duo USB

This excellent little device features twin 64GB flash drives equalling a total of 128GB storage, all in something the size of a key ring. This can come in extremely handy if you’re a snap-happy traveller who can fill up a camera’s memory card in one day of sightseeing. Failing that, store all your music on it so that you have instant tunes wherever you go!

Garmin Nuvi 3450

If you’re going to be doing a lot of driving and exploring, then the Garmin Nuvi 3450 could be an essential marital aid. We say this because, with the Nuvi, you can avoid conversations like, “Just read the map, woman!” “You should’ve stopped and asked directions, idiot!” “We don’t need to, we’ve got a map!” “Well, the map’s crap, we’re lost, and now we’re late for the show!” Arrive on time, in a good mood, and not ready for divorce, with this tidy device largely resembling a touchscreen smartphone, with 3D traffic, advanced mapping and lane guidance, and traffic notifications. And the best bit? Yoda’s voice to guide you, download you can.

Bose Soundlink Wireless Speaker 38

This fantastic device, which we featured in our last issue, should always find a place in the suitcase of any traveller who enjoys their music. Roughly the size of a paperback novel, this highly compact speaker wirelessly docks with any Bluetooth-enabled device to provide audio of an astoundingly good quality for its size. We wouldn’t leave home without it!

Samsonite Cosmolite

What’s a piece of luggage doing in the technology section, you may ask? Well, it’s the technology that has gone into these incredible suitcases that makes them so good. Constructed of an amazingly tough material also used in bullet-proof vests, these super-light suitcases are capable of withstanding a car impact, and even being driven over by a truck! Don’t believe us? Have a look on YouTube, it’s all there to see. What better way of keeping all your other travel gadgets featured here safe?

Amazon Kindle

Ok, these e-book readers are nothing new, but they do get better with each and every year. This latest incarnation is the fourth generation, with 2GB flash memory, and you wouldn’t believe the quality and resolution that the 6-inch E-ink LCD screen provides. Capable of storing hundreds of books, magazines and newspapers, you needn’t carry bulky novels any more. And the most impressive thing is the battery life – with a claimed one-month life on a single charge, you don’t need to worry about it dying halfway through your holiday.

LAB TEST

SAMSUNG GALAXY BEAM ONCE again, a technological development in the mobile phone industry has amazed us, as Samsung bring the fight to Apple with this latest incarnation of their impressive Galaxy phones – the Samsung Galaxy Beam. So called because the phone can literally ‘beam’ a video onto a nearby wall, the Galaxy Beam incorporates the latest in compact projector technology to feature it’s very own video projector, built right into the slim design of the Galaxy! While the concept itself sounds amazing, the important question is: does the reality live up to the dream? I.e. Can a projector so compact that it fits into a mobile project a picture of any kind of decent quality? Well, for one thing, the lights need to be off. Unlike powerful portable projectors that can project a viewable picture in a brightly lit room, the Beam doesn’t work at all in bright spaces, chiefly because in order to do that it would need a bulb so powerful it would melt the phone! So, don’t have any illusions about carrying it into a meeting and conducting presentations on it. However, if you’re with friends at home and would like to watch a movie, you can conceivably plonk it on the coffee table, turn out the lights, and watch away. It’ll throw a commendable 50-inch picture on a wall from two metres away, and

you can’t really argue with that on a phone that’s as slim and compact as most smartphones out there, and more so than some! The phone itself is decent in its own right; it runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) which, while highly usable, is a little dated now with recent releases bringing more features. It does boast a 4-inch WVGA display, which is still bigger than an iPhone 4S but not as big as the Galaxy Nexus, and a 1GHz dual-core processor, which again is very decent, but not the best out there. There’s also a rear-facing 5MP Camera with flash, as well as a front camera for video calls. One thing we will mention is the battery – while the 2,000mAh lithium is no slouch on its own, the projector will drain it completely after a mere three hours of use. Granted, few movies are longer than two hours, but expect to have to charge the Beam every time you watch a movie. This constant discharging and recharging will mean a very short lifespan for the battery in the long run if you use the projector a lot – which is kind of why you’d buy the phone in the first place, isn’t it?

LAB TEST

SONY PERSONAL 3D VIEWER SONY recently unveiled their personal 3D viewer which comes on the wave of recent 3D releases in the world of home entertainment, and claims to offer an enhanced 3D viewing experience that sets it above those offered by 3D TVs. But is this really the case? The whole ‘headset’ concept is nothing new – the past is littered with the corpses of similar failed products dating all the way back to the Virtual Reality phase back in the late nineties, which ultimately failed. The problem back then is that the headsets were cumbersome, and while the technology was a gimmick, the crappy quality of the experience wore thin very fast, and once the initial awe wore off, nobody really cared enough to make it commercially viable. So now Sony resurrect the concept in an age where both compact and 3D technologies are at a stage where consistent use is viable, so does this new headset make it so? Certainly, the device is a lot more comfortable than the old devices were – after some adjustment, you can have it fitting snugly and comfortably to your head, and it’s light enough that your neck won’t get sore after five minutes of viewing. The 3D experience is also enhanced, thanks to the fact that rather than having to focus both eyes on the same screen using glasses, each eye has it’s own dedicated high-quality

OLED screen. Therefore the unpleasant effects of stereoscopic video, like blurring, ghosting and eye strain, are greatly reduced. Sony has also optimized the integrated lenses to give a much wider viewing angle, up to 45 degrees, which serves to almost completely eliminate borders surrounding the images, and creating a more involving experience. However, there are drawbacks. First, they aren’t wireless, which means that you have to sit close to the DVD player or PlayStation to use them. Secondly, when playing on the PS3, you have to fumble around looking for things because you can’t see past your headset. Third, the 3D sound experience isn’t so pronounced on the headsets earphones as it would be with a full-on surround sound setup. Fourth, the almost sensory-deprivation-like experience of having the headset on can be a little overwhelming. Fifth, it’s a purely solitary experience – you can’t share your gaming experience with friends. Five major drawbacks on a device which costs this much (around $800 priced online) is really four too many. The device has HUGE potential, but we’ll wait to see how the kinks iron out in coming models.

ALI DRIVER SAYS THAT

“For an entry-level premium mid-sized sedan, you can’t go wrong with the BMW 520i!” Our Mystery Motoring Expert, Ali Driver, emerged calm and relaxed from a day in the BMW 5 Series!

T

he important thing to state from the outset is that this is a BMW. You might think that this is stating the obvious, but I say this because with those three letters come certain preconceptions that BMW must ALWAYS live up to, no matter what car they produce. It must look good, and in only one instance have BMW failed completely in recent history, and that was with the BMW 5 Series GT. Just one, in many years of glorious uninterrupted desirability, and that’s not a bad hit rate at all! The latest 5 Series does not let BMW down in this regard – it’s a sleek, stylish and handsome devil, looking both elegantly refined and yet somehow also ready to eat up some tarmac like a true sports sedan. This delicate combination is something that BMW have always done well. Secondly, the performance of the car must match the styling. Sure, it handles like a dream, with an eminently smooth ride and impressive poise making it a very pleasurable car to cruise around in. However, the 184hp 2.0l engine is a little short on thrills, despite being smooth and quiet. There are no surprises at all when you floor the 520i – it gives you exactly what

you’d expect from a 2.0l engine. The interior is a very pleasant On the other hand, it is very long place to be, but more so in the on fuel economy – a day of almost Number 1 seat. So, to summarise, if you really aren’t bothered about tearing up the streets of Doha like a Hollywood getaway driver, and all you want is the style, comfort, safety, and quality of a BMW, then the 520i provides all that and more, for the lowest price in the range. This makes it perfect for parents, money-conscious executives, and anyone else who doesn’t have something to prove on the roads, and just wants to get from A to B in the most comfortable and relaxed way possible without breaking the bank. If, however, you DO want to unleash the beast every time you mash the accelerator, then I’m afraid you’re going to have to fork out for the 535i. Or any other ‘-35’ in the BMW range, as they’ll feature the maker’s awesome twin-turbo 3.0l 6-cylinder that is enough for any normal driver. And if you want to go outright crazy, then the 4.4l Twin-Turbo V8 as featured in the 550i or the M5 will propel you from zero to insanity in a short enough time to satisfy even the most speedcrazy petrolheads!

Who is Ali Driver?

1. He lives in Qatar and says he grew up hard on the mean streets of Doha, but we think he’s actually from a rich family with lots of cars, and won’t admit it! 2. He says his car skills are all self-taught, but we’re sure we’ve seen a course certificate from the Losail International Circuit on his wall. 3. He drives cars better than anyone we know (but don’t ever tell him). 4. He claims to be able to change a regular car tyre in under 4 minutes, but we’re sure that’s only when his wife helps him. LOCATED in the bustling lobby of one of Doha’s most stylish hotels, Di Capri is La Cigale’s Italian fine dining outlet, offering up the very best of Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. We dropped by on a weekday lunchtime to sample their enticing menu. The venue is a unique and modern take on classic styling, boasting marble flooring, plush seating and unique lighting to create an atmosphere that is light, elegant and inviting. To start with, we had the Beef Carpaccio and the Parmigiana. Both were delicious, with the Carpaccio coming with salad and a light and delicious dressing drizzled over it, the perfect way to start a meal. However, the Parmigiana, while rich and delicious, came in a very generous helping for a starter, and would comprise and meal in and of itself! Parmigiana is a dish layered with aubergine and Parmesan, a little like Moussaka, and is very filling. It was hard to resist polishing the whole thing off, but we had to make sure we left room for main course!

52

For main course, we had the Duck Tagliata and the Shrimp Spaghetti. The Tagliata is a delicious dish of thinly sliced duck breast served with a salad and sauce. Though both the meat and the sauce were rich and delicious, the dish itself is still not too heavy, meaning that you can polish it off without feeling overfull. On the other hand, the Shrimp Spaghetti is a creamy and garlicky pasta dish with generous helpings of shrimp making for a hefty, though very tasty meal. Again, you’ll be hard pushed not to finish the whole thing off. With a central location in Al Sadd in the heart of Doha, Di Capri is an ideal place to stop by for a business lunch with colleagues, or for a dinner with friends before a night out. One word of warning, though: the portions in Di Capri are generous, and will leave you both contented and a little sleepy! Therefore, if you drop by for lunch and still wish to have a productive afternoon, perhaps avoid a starter! If you’re there for dinner, however, go crazy! You won’t regret it…

Kamil Karaca This month, we dine at the table of Chef Kamil Karaca, Executive Chef of The Torch Doha’s latest restaurant, Three Sixty…

F

or Executive Chef Kamil Karaca, food is an experience. “It’s not just about feeding your stomach, it’s about taste. And the taste makes me feel good,” Karaca told us in his kitchen. Karaca is the Executive Chef at Three Sixty, the only revolving restaurant in Doha whose 47th floor location puts a new meaning on the phrase “upscale”. Inside the modern décor of The Torch Hotel, Chef Karaca’s team executes dishes as an art, making sure the sliced strawberries are placed just right against the chocolate wonder that is Three Sixty’s fudge cake. And, they make sure nothing goes out that doesn’t meet the chef ’s standards, and his standards are high. Karaca’s passion for food and the art of cuisine began at home with his father, Muhittin, who is also a chef. He learned to cook passionately with the heart – beginning with chopping onions for this father in the family kitchen to prestige culinary training at the Sheraton Istanbul. However, his culinary education has never stopped. Karaca can’t count the number of food festivals he’s participated in – “Too many,” he tells us. Every year, he goes to international food festivals that inspire him to create and not be afraid to break the rules with food. Luckily, mingling with famous international chefs has not gone to his head. Karaca’s humble nature and in-depth knowledge of food makes him popular in and out of the kitchen. After the Three Sixty tasting, we understood why everyone spoke so highly of this chef. It’s because he deserves it. The tasting began with Mozzarella

54

Marinara – deep fried mozzarella cubed, not balled, coupled with tomato sauce delicately lined on the plate, then sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. Two baby tomatoes grace the ends, a hint to the high level of freshness Three Sixty maintains in its cuisines. As the knife cut through the mozzarella cube, a delicious spill of cheese poured out. The dish literally melts in the mouth. Then on to the prawn wraps, golden to perfection wrapped with pastry dough and drizzled with pesto aioli. But it was certainly the Caprese Salad that caught our eye and heart. Artfully staked, fresh buffalo mozzarella slices are layered with tomatoes. Then the food tower is lightly drizzled with balsamic vinegar and topped with fresh basil. The presentation is so awe inspiring we felt guilty taking the first bite out of the masterpiece. But after the marvelously blend of ingredients were mixing in our mouth, the guilt was overwhelmed by pleasure. The Grilled Fillet of Wagyu Beef was next. One of the restaurant’s signature dishes and popular with guests, the plates at first seemed light, but soon you discover it’s thick with flavour. Tender Wagyu beef is placed under a small pool of truffle mushroom sauce. The sauce enhances the flavour of the beef, making the already tender meat even more succulent. The risotto fungi that sat to the left of beef was cleverly pressed in a square shape and topped with a colourful assortment of veggies. The plate resembled a piece of art deco, bursting with colour and shapes, but made for substance.

The presentation is so awe inspiring we felt guilty taking the first bite out of the masterpiece.

The savoury experience was just as beautiful as its presentation. Last came the chocolate fudge cake with vanilla ice cream and golden leaves, prepared and perfected by Assistant Pastry Chef Manjula Indika. Chef Indika once worked under the French renowned pastry master Jean-François Arnaud. Before we purged our fork into the thick, narrow cake, we complimented the chef on his careful attention to the fruit placement and the artful style of shapes (made out of chocolate) that topped the fudge cake. Even the mint leaf on the ice cream was a playful touch. The cake, ice cream and colourful garnishes were arranged in such a way that made it natural to soak the cake in the ice cream while scooping a blueberry at the same time. We were more than impressed with the Three Sixty tasting, particularly since the restaurant had a breathtaking view overlooking Aspire Zone during sunset. As the golden sun shined against the last bites of my fudge cake, we asked Chef Karaca one last question: What does he like about cooking? “Food is beautiful,” he said.
