Food Glorious Food “Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all.” – Harriet Van Horne

O

ne of my favourite quotes about food is: “People who love to eat are always the best people” ( Julia child). And how true is that? Much of social life in Doha revolves around going out for food and drinks and we sure are spoilt with some of the most amazing casual and fine dining restaurants in the world. For us at FACT, when this time of the year comes around, the office is abuzz with talk of all our favourite foodie places in the city and the excitement of awarding the best outlets in Doha. So, let me say a huge congratulations to all the winners of the second annual FACT Dining Awards, which took place at the stunning rooftop of Mix Bar, Lounge, and Terrace at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa. You all voted in your thousands for your favourite venues in Doha, whilst local food bloggers and industry experts, along with our editorial team, voted for who they deemed best in each category. Check out all the winners starting p31 – did your faves walk away with an award? Also, let me take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors and every single person who made the event such an awesome one – your efforts are greatly appreciated! May is all about the biggest parties in Doha; there’s the return of Sundowner Sessions (p22), UB40 (p20), Tinie Tempah and Lost Frequencies (p24) and Sem Thomasson from Tomorrowland; and so many more amazing events to look out for this month. We’ve also got your monthly arts, fashion, tech and entertainment fix with the latest reviews and collections to hit the market! Now, I think I’m going to go and dine at some of the winning restaurants… why don’t you make a list and check them out too?! Happy eating.

ARTS INTERVIEW

B

eing relatively new to the local and regional art scene, Hussain Al Noaimi is making a mark with his originality and unique spin on artistic tools and methods. He works with mixed media art to create vibrant and interesting works that include pop culture legends like Charlie Chaplin and Bob Marley, as well as famous figures such as Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe and, much closer to home, the late great Bahraini singer, guitarist and organ player, Ali Bahar. Hussain’s work also presents striking images of glorious animals like the beloved falcon and horses. Let’s just say, he likes to keep things varied. “I perceive art as meditation,” Hussain tells us. “It’s the time I go into another world, where everything is full of colours and my path is like a blank canvas. And I am addicted to that serenity, that moment; hence why I proudly call myself an artoholic. “Each piece that I create comes from my vision and I need to be motivated to create,” he adds. “Sometimes my vision just pours onto the canvas and other times I need to bang my head against the wall, hypothetically speaking, just to bring my vision to life.” fact magazine

69

ARTS INTERVIEW

On average, Hussain spends around a week on one piece. He loves experimenting and keeping an open mind to new artistic surprises. THIS is his technique and it’s something that gives Hussain’s work an intriguing authority. “It’s like being on the edge,” he says. “Sometimes I fall and other times new, unexpected possibilities of expression and technique become available to me. I love mixing three to four different techniques in one piece. I love the roughness of a collage and the finishing of the work with acrylics,” Hussain continues. “My experimentation with wood transfer as an art form is my newest passion. There’s something very beautiful about the ruggedness of wood as a form of art. I can transfer any photograph or picture on wood and create beautiful art.” Looking back, Hussain reminisces unleashing his passion for art and colours as a child, on a blank new wall that was built at his family home after renovations. “That wall became my first ever canvas,” he recalls. “I asked my dad if I could draw there - he agreed - and that was that. “For many years, my creation became the focal point in the sitting area. Everyone who came home loved my art and that encouraged me to go to art classes after school,” he says.

LOCAL ARTS SCENE.., As an artist in Bahrain, Hussain admits that the biggest challenge is reaching a bigger, international market. However, he recognises that through many initiatives and events like ArtBahrain, local artists are getting the support and exposure that they deserve. 70

Hussain drifted from his artistic talent for a while, and it was only when he decided to take a leap of faith and leave his full time job, to concentrate on his own business, that the arts found a way back into his life. He explains: “My business of a unique gift gallery in Budaiya gave me the chance to travel a lot to Far East. And that’s when I rekindled my romance with the arts. I visited numerous art galleries that inspired me to pick up my paint brush and create something new.” As an artist in Bahrain, Hussain admits that the biggest challenge is reaching a bigger, international market. ARTS INTERVIEW

Hussain’s inspiration comes from various international artists as well as unrecognised young local artists that he’s met on his travels. He says: “Every artist has his own style. I make an extra effort to remain constantly open to new possibilities and innovative methods. This way I give new creative processes the opportunity to carry me forward.” And where can you go to get up close with Hussain’s work? “My home in Saar, Bahrain, is open for all who love art and would like to see what I do,” he says. “It’s a place where my work is easily available for purchase, right from the comfort of my home. And it’s open for everyone to come and share my passion.” For upcoming artists or anyone with an appetite for art, Hussain advises: “Don’t be afraid of experimenting. Sometimes you will fail, but from all failures you will learn. Don’t give up, and follow your passion.” Spoken like a true artoholic.

Big Screen

Captain America: Civil War

What’s it about: This third Captain America film adapts the Civil War storyline from Marvel Comics as political interference in the Avengers’ activities pits two teams, and former allies, Captain America and Iron Man, against one another.

DIRECTOR: Anthony Russo and Joe Russo CAST: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Elizabeth Olsen WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING? Marvel has been churning out its biggest superhero stories for the big screen at an astonishingly fast pace, and this month sees the return of the first avenger – Captain America. Now, we know that the Marvel superhero ensemble can be quite hard to get your head around – and if they’re all meant to be on the same side, what’s up with the fighting here? Word of advice; a memory refresher is definitely due with a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) binge weekend before going to watch Civil War. That said, those of you who are clued up will know that after witnessing Superman and Batman battle it out, this is definitely the next highly anticipated superhero feud, and you can expect almost every other Avenger who’s already part of the MCU – and some newcomers – to put on the biggest and most badass display in what has been called a war movie, an action-thriller, and even a love story (the fraternal kind, that is, between Cap and his longtime friend Bucky). Here’s hoping that director duo Joe and Anthony Russo can live up to the buzz created by the Marvel fandom.

Highlights “Now, we know that the Marvel superhero ensemble can be quite hard to get your head around – and if they’re all meant to be on the same side, what’s up with the fighting here?”

The Lobster What’s it about: A dystopian drama about a near future where single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they must find a romantic partner in 45 days or be transformed into a wild animal and sent off into The Woods.

– Captain America: Civil War

“Either you’ll get all of it, or none of it. Either you’ll find it hilarious or completely bizarre.” – The Lobster

DIRECTOR: Yorgos Lanthimos CAST: Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, John C. Reilly WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING? The Lobster, which was shown to festival crowds late last year, ridicules modern society’s date-or-die mentality where everyone puts a clock on your love life. The premise of the film is that monogamous relationships are what distinguish us from beasts, and those who fail to find a partner are therefore unworthy of the human race (obvs, not! What happened to the simplicity of Tinder?). It’s strange, wickedly funny and director Yorgos Lanthimos’ ingeniously quirky satires. Either you’ll get all of it, or none of it. Either you’ll find it hilarious or completely bizarre. And if that sounds like your kind of entertainment then The Lobster will be right up your film alley.

What is Not Yours is Not Yours By Helen Oyeyemi

POP ALT-ROCK

Dangerous Woman

By Goo Goo Dolls

By Ariana Grande

Boxes

Not only are the Goo Goo Dolls still a thing, but this month sees the release of the band’s 11th studio album, Boxes. We’ve had a little taster of what to expect with the release of their infectious singles Over and Over and So Alive, which have both cemented a more sunny outlook from the alt-rockers’ often moody canon. So Alive is definitely our favourite, with a breezy piano melody and upbeat drum line, alongside a catchy hook. The band moved away from their garage-rock roots that drove a once adolescent fan base, to a more wishy-washy side of adult contemporary rock back in the mid-90s – this was the time when listeners weren’t afraid to leave their Goo Goo Dolls CD around for parents to find, because the songs were recognisable from the radio and nothing too rebellious! Now that fans are all grown up, the band has returned with indelible melodies, intimate, heartfelt lyrics, and an anthemic, uplifting vibe. With Johnny Rzeznick’s raspy voice belting out some possible mega hits, we’re excited to hear the rest of Boxes.

She blew the music world away with her powerful vocals and bold performance at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, and now Ariana Grande is out to prove that she’s a Dangerous Woman. Smokey, soulful and everything you’d expect from a modern-day pop album with R&B influences, Ariana’s third studio album meshes together her 90’s throwback style with her sultry, slowburning vibe - the result is a final product that finally feels like a real sound of her own. The title track sets the tone for what’s to come with a distorted guitar line and the singer’s passionate, soaring vocals adding a sense of texture and modernity that makes Dangerous Woman feel as powerful as it could be. Expect roaring rockinfluenced ballads, snazzy hip-hop beats, and all the mainstream music mayhem that Ariana has given us so far. Her fandom will love it, and it’s likely she’ll gain some new listeners too!

Linked by the exquisitely winding prose of the author’s ensemble cast of characters, What is Not Yours is Not Yours invites readers into a world of lost libraries and locked gardens, of marshlands where the drowned dead live and a city where all the clocks have stopped. Here, students hone their skills at puppet school, the Homely Wench Society commits a guerrilla book-swap, and lovers exchange books and roses on St Jordi’s Day. This collection sees characters slip from the pages of their own story only to resurface in another. A book that hits the very top of the tower of imagination.

FICTION

The Noise of Time By Julian Barnes

The first novel since his Booker-winning The Sense of an Ending, Julian Barnes introduces readers to a story about the collision of Art and Power, about human compromise, human cowardice and human courage. It’s May 1937 and a man in his early thirties waits by the lift of a Leningrad apartment block. He waits all through the night, expecting to be taken away to the Big House. Any celebrity he has known in the previous decade is no use to him now. And few who are taken to the Big House ever return. If you loved his last book, this one will blow you away.

he very first thing I remember noticing as the image of the new R8 popped up in the pre-event presentation was the absence of the instantly recognisable top-to-bottom side blades that were a hallmark of the original model. They’ve been broken up into two separate panels, one behind the b pillar and one behind the side air vent. At first I thought this was a shame, but then I let it sink in and moved past it, and was able to look at the new R8 objectively. Despite being a decade old, the outgoing R8 still looked like a car of the future, which is testament to the pioneering design of the car. And yet the design of the new 2017 R8 is sharper and more angular, and the front fascia more aggressive, which all combines to make it look leaner, meaner and even more futuristic than the outgoing model, which is no small feat! With regards to the performance, the first thing you should know about the new R8 is 78

fact magazine

that it was developed side by side with the R8 LMS customer racing car, instead of the road car coming first and the racing model being developed from that. It therefore shares a lot of technology and components with the racing version – around 50% in fact. This includes the super lightweight aluminium and carbon fibre Audi Space Frame (ASF) chassis (weighing in at only 200kg), and the 5.2 litre V10 engine. This is a smart move on Audi’s part, because it results in a road car with the power and performance of a racing car, and a racing car with the usability required for their gentleman racing drivers. What does all this mean for the road car? Well, it means a mind-blowing combination of comfort and performance in a car that feels equally at home on a track and on the road. In normal driving conditions, the ride is smooth and comfortable, with plenty of interior space and headroom, and comfortable leather sports seats. Most of the vehicle’s functions can be operated from

In dynamic mode, the traction control isn’t too invasive – it interferes just enough to stop you heading backwards into a wall, but not enough to feel like it’s killing the power and, as a result, all your fun. The grip and handling is spectacular, and you can confidently explore the limits of not only the car’s capabilities, but also your own, without those moments of terror that shift things from fun to not so much. There is not nearly enough space on these pages to explain all the pioneering technological wizardry that has gone into creating such a result, but we can tell you it’s a masterpiece. The naturally-aspirated 5.2 litre V8 puts out 610hp on the V10 Plus we drove (25hp more than the R8 LMS version’s 585hp!) and 560Nm of torque. This equates to a 0-100km/h time of 3.2 seconds, a 0-200km/ h time of just 9.9 seconds, and a top speed of 330km/h, making it the fastest and most powerful production Audi ever built. In addition, because of the ASF chassis and lightweight materials, the V10 Plus boasts a dry weight of only 1,454kg, which because of the mid-engine layout, is balanced almost equally between the front and rear chassis. The new all-wheel drive system can distribute torque freely between the axles, rather than the 60/40 power split of the outgoing R8, meaning that the full range of power can be sent to either the front or the rear of the car as required. This is done through the superb and lightning-quick S tronic seven-speed transmission and the intelligent Quattro drive system. The result is mesmerising. HYUNDAI ELANTRA NAMED BEST IN CLASS AT MECOTY Hyundai’s sixth generation Elantra has been named as the Best New Small Sedan at the MECOTY awards for 2016. The Elantra was named ahead of joint-finalist in the Small Sedan category, the VW Jetta, while the Hyundai Tucson was among the finalists for Small SUV. The MECOTY awards were announced during a gala event at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre on March 31. First held in 2014, the MECOTY awards reflect the distinct preferences of Middle East buyers, with an emphasis on sedan and SUV models – the two body styles most popular with customers in the region – across a range of sizes. Hyundai has seen considerable success in the MECOTY programme’s first three years, with the Sonata named as best Midsize Sedan in 2015. 80

IXOOST IPOD SPEAKER The ultimate petrolhead’s collectible, these awesome iPod speakers are the second coolest thing to come out of Modena after supercars, but are intrinsically linked to them…

iXOOST iPOd SPeakerS are high-quality audio speakers that are made from the actual exhaust systems from famous racing cars and supercars. The concept is the brainchild of Matteo Panini and Mirco Pecorari, both natives of Modena, who have backgrounds in design and mechanics. Made in Modena (also the famous birthplace of Ferrari, Maserati, and other Italian automotive exotica), the manufacturers source authentic exhaust parts from racing teams and exotic cars and incorporate speakers, a subwoofer and electronics to make these wonderful finished products. They claim that the unique design of the speakers incorporating the metallic tubes adds a distinct quality to the audio produced by the speakers. We can’t personally attest to that, but having heard the speakers do their thing, we can definitely confirm that the audio is of a very high-quality, with a richness and volume easily on a par with other well-known premium audio speaker docks. The speakers can also be connected via lightning cable 82

fact magazine

and via Bluetooth, so you can stream from your laptop or keep your phone on you when you move around. The speakers finished with silver and green (F1 fans will recognise the colours), as you see on this page, are made using an exhaust pipe from the Mercedes AMG W04 F1 car from the 2013 season, although this one, unfortunately, is now sold. There are silver and red four-speakers too, from the OTTO (eight, for eight-cylinder) range, and this particular one is made from the exhaust pipes of an actual Ferrari 056 2.4l V8 engine from the 248 F1 car raced in the 2007 season. And the silver on silver speakers are made using a part from a Williams FW32 F1 car from 2010. Such specialised products will, unfortunately, come at a price. These speakers can set you back by anything from 6000 to 9000 Euros, depending on configuration and personalisation. If we could afford it though, we’d have one… Visit www.ixoost.it for more information.

n case you haven’t been kept in the loop (or you’ve been avoiding social media!), last month saw the second annual FACT Dining Awards Doha take place at the trendy Mix Bar, Lounge and Terrace’s very chic rooftop. The awards recognised foodie excellence in the city, making for a delicious event. FOODIE CORNER befitting its location in the regal Marsa Malaz Kempinksi, The Pearl-Doha. Not only will you get a great dining experience here, but you’l slip into a lively vibe with upbeat tunes, you’ll sip on delicious drinks, and you’ll probably spend a good few hours in the welcoming lounge on the upper floor. The restaurant is also known for its authentic approach to fine-dining Latin fare, through a magical infusion of ingredients and flavours, and, in our humble opinion, Toro Toro serves the best tiraditos in town, not to mention its juicy beef and seafood dishes too. Talking of food, get ready, because we’re going to fill you in on what you should be ordering for a true taste of Toro Toro. We kicked off the evening with cold appetisers, beginning with a Chipotle Salad made up of mixed lettuce, goat cheese, almond cranberries and chipotle balsamic dressing. If you want to talk flavours, this dish is beautifully in-sync, with the tanginess of the goat cheese being tamed by the cranberries, and THAT dressing, we just couldn’t get enough of it! Next up, and our favourite of the starters, is the Scallops Tiradito - an olive oil leche de tigre, avocado, cherry tomato and lemon dish. This is the perfect dish if you crave for a more acidic twist for your palate. That’s not all, out came a soft Sea Bass Tartare. A dish that was absolutely refreshing to taste with a mix of mango-cilantro puree, coconut milk and corn cake. Can you say mouthwatering? Having devoured every single one of the appetisers, we were ready for the big show: main course! A tender Beef Fillet Anticucho was our first target, with aji panca marinade,

potato-corn salad and aji salsa. Think tender meat, surrounded by an array of yummy side components – you’ll be in foodie heaven! But if a big main is not for you, relax and let Toro Toro indulge you with its signature sharing plates. These are a great choice for trying a bit of everything! We opted for more seafood, this time a Grilled Octopus with fingerling potato salad and Peruvian adobo. A true delicacy that was cooked just right. This was followed by the savory Concha A Lo Macho with scallops, prawns, aji panca and chipotle aioli – a dish that stay true to the essence of Latin American cooking, using flavour that pop with every bite! Rest assured that we had some difficulties getting up out of the chair after this fivestar foodie feast. We can now see why it was awarded as the best in Doha - it’s, simply, untouchable. Congratulations team Toro Toro! GO: Call 4035 5101 for reservations and more information.

ou’ve probably been to Souq Waqif many, many times. And you’ve probably heard of this lavish restaurant that takes prime position in the middle of this popular, traditional location that is visited by locals and tourists every day; but, you’ll feel it, once you step inside Parisa, that outdoor market vibe fades away as a royal ambience sets in. For those who haven’t yet discovered the grandeur of Parisa Souq Waqif, let us fill you in. Parisa is an Iranian restaurant, featuring the most dazzling colourful décor that combines intricate mosaics, ornate chandeliers, thousands of tiny mirrors and colorful Persian carpet. And if that is not grand enough, all items were handpicked and brought to Doha, adding an authentic touch to the venue. This is a great first impression! This is a place for relaxing and enjoying a wonderfully traditional meal; it’s magnificent both aesthetically and for its food. Now, that, we can agree with. Upon entering, the first thing we see – or rather, smell – is the delicious aroma of fresh bread, coming from the eye-catching traditional Tannor (bread oven) near the main dining area. We later get to try this scrumptious

treat; Taftoon bread, served with a feta cheese condiment – just perfect! Ready to tuck into a Persian feast, we take a look at the menu and its delicious array of choices. There’s hot and cold appetisers, fresh, homemade mains and hearty grills, and beautiful desserts. We kicked off our palate pleasing with some delicious starters. The choices were endless, but we opted for the popular ones, including Salad-E-Shirazi, a fresh cucumber salad with tomato, onion and lime dressing – simple yet very satisfying. Also, their was the mouthwatering MastO-Khiar, made up of yogurt, walnuts, raisins and cucumber. It’s the perfect side dish to accompany a meat or chicken main. Net up was a savoury platter - Salad Bademjan – which consisted of fried eggplant, yogurt and crispy garlic and shallots. Can you say flavour? This dish was packed with it! The main course was a grand foodie affair as a delectable grill with slowed cooked chicken and lamb kebabs made their way to our table. Meat eaters, you’re going to be wowed! The meat is beautifully marinated, tender, juicy, and goes perfectly with your choice of sauce. Almost hitting full tank on the food feast, we still had a tiny bit of space left for

Philippe Tardieu Hospitality General Manager at Ali Bin Ali

Doha Insider WHAT MAKES YOUR PORTFOLIO OF OUTLETS SPECIAL?

THREE OF YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN FOODIE GEMS IN DOHA...

WHAT’S COMING UP FOR ALI BIN ALI’S HOSPITALITY DIVISION?

Ali Bin Ali Hospitality has over the years built a diverse portfolio of food brands carefully selected from different parts of the world. Each brand compliments, strategically, our overall offer in the country, responding to different market segments in Qatar, ranging from fast casual dining concepts to fine dining. We have been blessed with some very loyal customers and staff who over the years have become the heart and soul of our restaurants. In addition we have something quiet unique the way we culturally nurture relationships with our international principals making us the partner of choice in Doha, and the region, allowing us to continuously improve our customer experience within the brands we are operating.

I personally enjoy my Italian food and the set up at Lo Spaghetto. I wish to see more eateries like that in Qatar breaking the typical franchise rules. Otherwise, when not at work, I like chilling out on the Pier of Trader Vic’s, enjoying the Doha Skyline, the tranquility of the place and, of course, their cocktails. Levant food being one of my favourites, please allow me to mention Al Mayass which is part of our portfolio. Al Mayass was the favourite place, for my father and I, to eat on Fridays whilst I was living in Kuwait. I absolutely love their food and the Armenian twist given to the mezze and especially the grills. You will, without doubt, see me eating there very often.

Let me only reveal to you the tiptop of the iceberg. We will be opening the much-awaited Em Sherif, bringing to Doha a unique and phenomenal Lebanese cuisine and service experience. We are also opening Artisan du Chocolat, the luxury British Chocolate boutique. Their unique pralines and chocolate pearls have been seen in many weddings in the region and we are certain that our customers will be delighted to finally see the store opening in Qatar. We are also working on our own developed concept, as the division has matured a lot since its opening, and we have some talent in the heart of our team who will be showcasing the passion and dedication we have for our industry.
