Love the outdoors Winter is coming, and boy are we excited to quit the indoor life and head outside to play. As we welcome the onset of cooler climes, FACT has some awesome ways for you to enjoy the great outdoors here in Doha… Kite Surfing Thrill-seekers rejoice! Autumn provides the perfect months for this wind-powered water sport which doubles as a fantastic way of keeping fit and in shape too. You use your whole body for kit surfing; your legs control the board and push against the power of the kite whilst your upper body helps control balance. Check out the Flo Kite School at Zekreet, Fuwairit or Al Wakrah beach – it offers beginner courses and hand-on experience for technique, use of equipment, and safety (call 5504 1039 for more info). You can also head over to one of the many hotels and beach clubs that provide kite surfing as a watersport, if you’re already comfortable with the activity!
Picnic in the Park One of the best things about Doha is the abundant greenery and outdoor gardens, so make sure you take advantage in the season ahead. Pack yourself a picnic blanket, some sandwiches, snacks and drinks, and board games, for a chilled-out afternoon on the grass. Head to Dahl Al Hamman Park, located at the intersection of Al Markhiya Street and Arab League Street. This green-haven is packed with flora and fauna to delight many; an expat as well as interest the locals. Kids will love the three playgrounds, mini amphitheatre, skate pipe, basketball court and cheesy popcorn vendors, whilst grown-ups can take respite on the grassy lawns or stroll the winding pathways through plant pots and various sections of the park.
Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) SUP has become somewhat of the new water craze! It doesn’t require a lot of lessons or classes and it’s a rather chilled-out, on-water activity. The great thing is that SUP is also fast-becoming part of many PaddleFit regimes (a way for people to stay fit by doing various activities using a paddle). In Doha, PaddleQatar has teamed up with Fitness Qatar to create a complete full body-training plan by combining the principals of CrossFit with paddling techniques (call 5549 0895 for more info on their sessions). SUP can be challenging but a whole load of fun, and a really fast way to getting (and staying) in shape.

Qatar International Tours has full day and overnight itineraries. Call 4455 1141 or 4455 2242 for more information.
Dhow Cruise Walking along the Corniche you’ll no doubt have seen long rows of these traditional wooden boats bobbing on the ocean and waiting for customers to hop onboard. Well, in the cooler months there’s just no better way to admire the Doha skyline and its surrounding waters than from the platform of a dhow. Most operators will have many ride options, which might also include a stop or drop-off at Safuliya Island. A 15-minute ride can cost approximately QR20, half an hour costs around QR70 and an hour-long trip is QR150. Remember, prices are not fixed so make sure to get your haggling hat on to bargain a better price for your trip.
Horse Riding There’s something really majestic and compelling about riding one of these elegant beasts, even in Doha! There are plenty of facilities in Qatar that will cater to experienced riders as well as beginners and those who want to experience horse riding as a leisurely hobby. Self-Taught Talent With elaborately realistic visions in mind, self-taught Bahraini artist Leena Al Ayoobi paints on a canvas to express her love for the culture she holds close to her heart. Adding vibrant colour to her everyday life, Leena masters her paintings in her spare time. FACT’s Pallavi Ramesh chats with the beautiful young artist about her artistic past, colourful present and ambitious future… She picks up her canvas, puts it on the stand and starts painting. She doesn’t stop until her creative process is fulfilled. And that’s the artist within Leena; passionate and dedicated with a special love for painting traditional and folk art that explores the diverse Arab culture. The first thing we noticed while scanning Leena’s paintings on instagram was – women! We’re curious to learn more about her thought-process and choice of subject. “It’s fun to sketch a woman’s face,” she says simply. “The features, curves, eyes. All my paintings are creations of my imagination. So to put down a beautiful imagination on canvas is fun!” she explains.
After completing an MA in Business Management at the University of Bahrain, Leena now works as a consultant at Ernst & Young.“I never had the chance to study art as I was busy with work and taking up courses related to my field of work,” she tells us. So how does she balance her passion for art with the demands of professional

work life? “Art is therapeutic for me, it makes me happy, it challenges me as a person and it’s a stress-buster,” Leena explains. “These elements are a part of daily life, and that’s how the balancing act happens by default.” Leena paints whenever she feels like it, sometimes even at 2am. In her eyes, there’s no such thing as “dedicated time to art.” It’s this free-spirited approach that has allowed Leena the artistic freedom that so many other trained artists may crave. Not only does Leena paint, she’s a big fan of digital art too. “Sometimes I sketch an animated image on paper and my mood is not to paint, but throw colours digitally, so I do that,” she says. fact magazine .53

Leena’s anime creations are in fact digital dolls; nostalgic of her childhood when she was into cartoons, a memory that she often visits and one that takes her to a different zone when painting. Leena draws her inspiration from cartoon characters, specifically Japanese anime and Manga, as well as beauty and jewellery. She says: “Certain things catch my attention and get etched in my mind. I make it a point to go home and start painting that very thing, but in my own style.” We soon take a trip down memory lane, and Leena excitedly jumps at the chance to tell us all about the first time she held a paintbrush. “I was three and I used to paint on the walls of my house, random images that came to my mind,” she laughs. Leena took part in all the art competitions at school level and developed her skills step-by-step, teaching herself and enjoying her artistic journey on her own terms. And this includes technique and use of different materials. “I use Acrylic paint for most of my paintings, and I use painting rolls for layering; to give a certain effect to the piece,” Leena explains. “For the perfect texture, I use acrylic mediums and gels.” With a keen interest in traditional art, Leena’s raw artistic talent allows her to express through many different dimensions, and one of her artistic goals is to create visuals of Arabic tradition and showcase them on an international platform. “Arab culture in the form of artworks, needs to be taken on a global platform and made known to people abroad,” Leena says.
Being self-taught, she also wants to take part in more residency programmes in the near future. “I will be heading to Morocco in November for a month-long residency programme; concentrating mainly on traditional art and socialising with the Moroccan art community, and also introducing my art which speaks a lot about Bahrain‘s traditions.”

Pip Hoy’s move to Doha further fuelled her interest in the arts. Shabana Adam talks to the Australian artist about her inspirations, her resilience and her journey into art…
I Though Pip’s art
was purely for her own purposes, people soon began to show interest. “This, to me, is not what I set out to do, but I’ve gone on this journey and here I am.” Pip’s inspiration
is more about where her head and her heart is. “I’m inspired by what I see around me, and my paintings I see as a vehicle to communicate in colour.”

t has been four years since Pip Hoy and her family moved to Doha, and what a journey it’s been. Pip’s first solo exhibition, called Resilience is currently running at the Grand Hyatt Doha, and I was eager to learn more about the artist behind this colourful collection of work. Going back to the beginning, Pip explains: “We moved into this big villa with a vast expanse of white walls, and there aren’t a lot of options available to the residents to fill the walls with things that look nice. “I met a woman who is also an artist, and she said to me ‘why don’t you just do doodles on the canvas in the colours you like?’ And that’s pretty much how it started,” she says. Art isn’t something that just happened to Pip. She has always had an interest in creative pursuits since childhood. “I really enjoyed textiles and design at school,” she says. “I was drawn to the colour. My mother would sew a lot so I was very comfortable in that area. “I had ambitions to go to fashion school but I kind of chickened out at the last minute and decided to pursue what my family deemed a more sensible degree; I did economics and marketing, then went into business,” Pip recalls. Resilience is the result of over a year’s hard work, and an apt name for Pip’s first solo project, as it resonates with her own personal journey. “I had plenty of encouragement around me,” she says.
“But, it’s a big thing to do, particularly when it’s your first solo project and when you’re not a trained artist.” The timing was also tough as Pip endured the loss of her father, and faced a number of difficulties. So, how did she power through? “I realised that my art and my commitment to this exhibition was something for me,” she says. “This is something I enjoy doing and I didn’t want to give up the very thing that brought colour to my life, literally, in favour of having to surrender myself to all these other difficulties,” Pip explains. “So I decided to pursue it, and it hasn’t been easy – hence the name Resilience.” Ironically, Pip’s work uses a lot of

symbolism. You can see the crescent moon in her collage pieces, which, for Pip, signifies medical and physical help, and is a symbol of healing, health and wellbeing. She also uses imagery around the ‘evil eye,’ focusing on the positive and keeping bad at bay. Pip tells me that, in all honesty, she has been so focussed on getting to this point that she hasn’t given any thought to her next step. “I would absolutely be interested in moving on to the next challenge whatever that may be,” she says. This talented lady is the real definition of ‘it’s never too late to achieve your dreams’ and I’m convinced that more artistic success awaits Pip in the future!

Art attack Art enthusiasts have a great number of events to look forward to these next few months.
We round up some of the most exciting upcoming exhibitions to visit in Doha…
Building Our Collection: Mughal and Safavid Albums This ongoing temporary exhibition at the Museum of Islamic Art offers a rare opportunity for visitors to gain insight into the process of collecting and displaying art in a museum. Building Our Collection explores why MIA collects artworks, and how its acquisition and exhibition practices to shape people’s understanding of Islamic art. The expo gives a background and sheds light on the relevance of artworks within an Islamic art collection, and their wider artistic, historic, and educational significance. There is a particular focus on Mughal and Safavid Albums, showcasing the museum’s collection of miniatures and calligraphy from Safavid Iran and Mughal India. This display examines the influence of collecting practices, and how the tradition of assembling albums was adapted from the Safavid court by the Mughal emperors and then finally adopted by influential British figures in India. If art history intrigues you, this is the perfect exhibition to visit! GO: Building Our Collection: Mughal and Safavid Albums runs until February 21 2015 on the 4th floor galleries at MIA. Visit www.mia.org.qa for more information.
Summary, Part 1 Mathaf Collection This exhibition positions the heritage of Arab modernities within an international context. A selection of works from the 20th century reconsiders traditional histories of art in the region, looking at the networks of connections between visual, historical, and experimental influences. Identified in these are alternative relationships between art works and important yet sometimes lesser-known historical moments that influenced cultural transformations in society and politics. By telling the story of the pieces showcased and documenting the art histories it contains, the exhibition offers new scholarly, educational, and experiential routes of access to this particular collection. GO: Summary, Part 1 Mathaf Collection is an ongoing exhibition at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art. Visit www.mathaf.org.qa for more information. 62. fact magazine
Shirin Neshat: Afterwards Also taking place at Mathaf is a solo exhibition by Iranian artist Shirin Neshat. Curated by Abdellah Karroum, Afterwards introduces a group of existing and newly produced works, including a photographic series inspired by the famous Shahnama poem - The Book of Kings - as well as a selection of video installations commenting on historical, cultural and political realities on which Shirin has focused on for the past 30 years. The vivid pieces will provoke emotional tension as this exceptional body of work reveals Shirin’s intention to build relationships between ancient mythologies and contemporary events that challenge our lives. GO: Afterwards runs from November 9 to February 15 2015 at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art. Visit www.mathaf.org.qa for more information.
Yousef Ahmad: Story of ingenuity Yousef Ahmad is interested in recording and archiving the development of Qatari art, and this certainly shows in this new exhibition. The work on display highlights the Qatari artist’s body of work through a precise selection of his most striking artworks dating to the 1970s all the way up to now. The expo showcases three phases in Yousef ’s artistic career, from the early oil paintings that include the historic depiction of Al Zubarah Fort, to his mixed media calligraphic pieces where he utilises and creates local palm tree paper, and his new conceptual artworks presenting his ability of developing an innovate artistic style. GO: Story of Ingenuity runs from November 11 to February 14 2015 at QM Gallery, Katara. Visit www.kataraartcentre.com for more information.

The Imitation Game
What’s it about:
Set during the darkest days of World War II, this is a British biopic of mathematician and WWII code breaker Alan Turing. Played by Benedict Cumberbatch, the nail-biting story follows Turing and his team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park, as work relentlessly to decrypt enemy communication.
Director: Morten Tyldum Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Charles Dance. Why it’s worth watching? Let’s not forget that Alan Turing is a pioneer of modern-day computing and credited with cracking the German Enigma code, and whose genius saved thousands of lives during WWII. But, Turing lived a troubled life with just as many personal tragedies to go alongside his professional triumphs. It’s this life of alienating others and repeatedly clashing with bosses that Norwegian director Morten Tyldum renders with such accuracy and taste. All the ups and downs of Turing’s life arrive right on schedule in a plot that’s so well told that audiences will be drawn into its manipulation without question. Benedict Cumberbatch’s masterful performance will definitely get even the most highbrow of critics talking. The Imitation Game is compelling from start to finish and we’re convinced it both looks and feels like another serious awards season contender.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 What’s it about: Katniss Everdeen and her most trusted friends are back and this time they’re hold up in District 13 as rebels. After Katniss and a few others were extracted from the Quarter Quell, where Peeta was left behind under control of The Capitol, her courage and fight for justice is called upon by those who want to help overthrow the cruel ruling President Snow.
“…though we love that the final part has been split into two films, there’s a sense of underwhelming from the trailer…” Director: Francis Lawrence Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks. Why it’s worth watching? Though we love that the final part has been split into two films, we’re slightly underwhelmed by the trailer which screams ‘predictable’. Don’t get us wrong, we’re pretty big into the world of The Hunger Games, but now that the initial suspense, of being a tribute and getting thrown into a world where it’s kill or be killed, is over we’re finding it hard to get excited. Here’s hoping that Katniss and her new-found rebel family will bring just as much assault, emotion and drama to the film as audiences expect.

What If? - Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions By Randall Munroe
ROCK/ALTERNATIVE/ GRUNGE DANCE/ ELECTRONIC
Motion
By Calvin Harris
In the world of modern-day music,
it’s becoming rather difficult for artists to retain their signature sound without being too generic. This is, however, not the case with Calvin Harris. Enter Motion, a 15-track record that has, so far, produced a string of hits for the Scottish Producer/DJ. Yes, Calvin Harris seems to be on a bit of a roll. And after 2014’s massive hit Summer, it seems this will be a banner year for one of dance music’s finest. We’re loving the instrumental rave-house track Slow Acid, packed with mid-tempo energetic beats and pulsating jolts of a prodigy-like, high-pitched “Wooo!” in the vocals. Where he really wins is with the visuals for this song (if you haven’t already, go and watch the video on YouTube now!). And it’s no secret that Calvin Harris has earned himself major music credentials these last few years - this only gets better on Motion. Perhaps the most anticipated track on the LP is Together, which features Gwen Stefani on vocals, and then there’s Outside with Ellie Goulding (his phone contact list must be every guy’s dream). Blame is another standout, a more fuller and structurally rounded track – maybe this is a new era for Calvin Harris.
Sonic Highway
By Foo Fighters This album had thousands of reviews months before its release date – how, we hear you ask? The honest answer is, we don’t know, because the Foo Fighters didn’t release a single track in the months leading up to the album release. BUT, does that matter? The obvious answer is no, it doesn’t! It’s the hardcore, loyal fans that built up such a hype for this eight-track record (and we’re not surprised, the Foo Fighters are awesome) without having even the slightest idea of what it sounds like! Now that’s a fandom you don’t want to mess with. Just like these hundreds of thousands of eagerly awaiting music minions, we too were unable to get a real glimpse of Sonic Highway, BUT, let’s be honest, the Foo Fighters wound up being the one band to survive the 90s alt-rock explosion unscathed, and we’re sure that their eighth studio album is going to bring them crazy amounts of success.
Ponder the hypothetical with the creator of the widely popular web comic – xkcd; Randal Munroe. He answers the fuzzy and strange questions put forth by his fans, ranging from unusual to out-and-out diabolical. Questions like, What if a Richter 15 earthquake hit New York City? Or horrible ways you could die while building a periodic table out of all the actual elements. These weird and wacky questions are met with Munroe’s well-researched answers. He’s come up with a magnum opus, including never-before-answered questions with a spoon of wit and information!

I
t seems that, with the latest generations of Maseratis, the exotic Italian automaker has finally got their act together to produce cars that are as complete as they are beautiful. We saw it with the Ghibli, and now we’ve seen it with the Quattroporte. Maseratis have always been beautiful, but in previous years they were often let down with minor details such as dated looking infotainment software and interior finishing, rattles and squeaks that shouldn’t be there, and poor resale value. Thankfully, all of these details have now been addressed. While the exterior is still pretty as a picture, it’s the interior that really takes your breath away – it’s absolutely superb. Intensely stylish, it’s the little things that make it stand apart from the rest, such as the grained instead of polished surfaces on the wooden trim that really adds a touch of style. And the best part is that there wasn’t
a single noise that shouldn’t be there – not a rattle anywhere, just the lovely racy sound of the V6 featured in our model, and the luxurious sound from the premium stereo system, operated via an excellent, modernlooking driver interface. Which brings us to the other new detail that has been introduced to the latest generation of the Quattroportes and the Ghiblis, which is the company’s great new V6 engines. The new V6, as featured in the Quattroporte S model we drove, is a 3.0l twin-turbocharged unit that puts out 410hp and 550Nm torque, so even though it’s the more economical, and therefore ‘sensible’ option, it’s still an highly powerful car. It’ll go from 0-100km/h in just 5.1 seconds, and on to a top speed of 285km/h. The twin-turbo V8 in the GTS boasts a whopping 530hp, which takes it to 100km/h in 4.7 seconds, and on to well over 300km/h! Ride quality and handling, on the
CITY RIDES
other hand, were never problems for any Maserati we’ve driven, and that goes for the new Quattroporte too. In normal driving mode, it glides along with the refinement of any other premium model on the market, and in sport mode, everything firms up to provide a more dynamic and engaging drive. Throttle and steering response both tighten, and it makes the Quattroporte a whole lot of fun to tear up the streets in, and then a sublime sedan in which to cruise home after a long day. The combination of a sensible new engine option and the improved quality is going to add to the desirability of the Quattroporte considerably. In previous years, anyone looking for a premium barge would consider a Quattroporte an exotic luxury – a choice driven by desire rather than sense – whereas a sensible choice would be something German or even Japanese. However, the new Quattroporte, with improved build quality, super-stylish interiors, a stunning infotainment system and more economical model options, all allowing the cars to better hold on to their value, mean that the Quattroporte will now begin to steal more customers away from the Germans!

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee srt The Grand Cherokee SRT is a car with a sinister alter ego - a noholds-barred American muscle car disguised as a family SUV!
72.
fact magazine
Despite Jeep’s illustrious off-road history, the Grand Cherokee SRT is really designed as a street machine. Granted, it does have far more ground clearance than your average muscle car, but those shiny alloys and that big front splitter rule it out for anything more extreme than a gravel track, though they do serve to make this car look absolutely superb. In addition, the Selec-Trac all-wheel drive system as featured on the SRT doesn’t have the rock, gravel or mud settings that the standard Grand Cherokee has, but tellingly it does have two settings that the normal one doesn’t have, and those are Sport and Track. Even more tellingly, it also has a very unmistakeable launch control button, featuring an icon based on drag strip starting lights. All signs point to the SRT being built solely for the tarmac, but the real truth is in the name – Street Racing Technology. So how does it fare?
Well, the excitement starts when you push the ignition switch and hear that delicious 6.4l V8 rumble to life. We fully predict that the first journey this car makes whenever someone gets into it for the first time is to a quiet, straight stretch of road, where that launch control will be put to the test. It was definitely the case on this particular review! To give you an idea of what came next, I’ll tell you that the 6.4l V8 puts out 470hp and 624Nm of torque. This means a 0-100km/h of just 4.9 seconds. 4.9! It’s absolutely insane.
That’s faster than the V8 Cayenne GTS. The Range Rover Sport, BMW X5 M and the Mercedes ML 63 AMG all do it in 4.7 seconds, but here’s the rub – the Grand Cherokee SRT costs around half of the cheapest of this premium line-up! There is simply no other sports SUV that gives you this kind of performance for this kind of money. The Jeep doesn’t match the Cayenne in terms of agility – you do feel like you’re in a two-tonne SUV – but having said that the Selec-Trac system does an incredible job of hauling the Grand Cherokee SRT around corners. There is some tyre squeal, but you
can corner and change the direction of this big SUV with amazing agility and accuracy. However, I can’t help but feel that it would have benefitted greatly from a hydraulic suspension that lowered the centre of gravity a couple of inches when you really want to throw it around. Inside, the interior really does the exterior justice. A premium vibe is given off by the abundance of padded leather surfaces, carbon fibre panels with chrome finishing, and even a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shifter. Aside from the gear shifter, there are also paddle shifters on the steering wheel, further enhancing the car’s performance credentials. Then there’s the impressive list of standard features – you name it, the SRT’s got it: Adaptive cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, in-built hard disc drive, Sat-Nav, air-conditioned seats… the list goes on. A real bonus is the very cool SRT software displayed on the 7-inch TFT infotainment screen. On this, you’ll find gauges for 0-60 and quarter mile times, g-force indicators and more track-based gadgetry that is loads of fun to play with. So, what is the purpose of this vehicle? Is it simply an oversized and overweight muscle car, or is it a viable mean machine for track, street and mud? Well, the truth is that you’d have to take mud out of that last question, but after only a short while driving it, all doubts are dispelled as to this machine’s true purpose. It is simply being utterly bad-ass! fact magazine

Fitness Forefront: Nike+ Fuelband
Stepping up your health regime? We tell you why the Nike+ Fuelband is a great choice for monitoring, influencing, and improving, your fitness and exercise habits…
Design On Point
There are a number of trendy colours like neon green, pink, yellow and red to choose from, as well as plain black too. It has a rubbery matte finish, which doesn’t irritate the skin and looks great too. We love the 100-dot LED display, which can be read in full daylight, and the band comes in three different sizes so you can get the best fit for your wrist.
Feature Frenzy
The features and capabilities of the Nike+ Fuelband are enhanced with its link to the Fuelband app. A built-in 3-axis accelerometer delivers instant feedback on daily steps, calories burned and Nike’s activity metric currency, Fuel points. Whether it’s walking to the shops or running 10 miles a day – the idea is to make everything you do count towards getting fitter!
Battery Life
Thanks to an energy-efficient Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) radio, the Nike+ Fuelband has a much-improved battery life compared to its predecessor; after a week of solid use, you’ll likely have to charge once only, and USB charging takes a little over an hour (pretty impressive, huh?).
Smart Bluetooth Competitive Circles
It’s all about yesterday’s score or outperforming a friend on Facebook. Take the ‘Win the Hour’ feature, which aims to get you active every hour of the day for just five minutes – an LED flash acts as a reminder, as well as a notification popping up on your phone. Perform well and share the results on your social media!
The best thing about the Nike+ Fuelband is that, like many top-ofthe-line, wearable-tech products, it adopts the Bluetooth LE (also known as Bluetooth 4.0). This enables devices to connect and disconnect and sync automatically in the background, with less strain on the battery.

T
here is a new burger joint in town, and this one is super cool. It’s unlike any other restaurant or café we’ve seen in Doha, it looks like a renovated warehouse, with little touches, like a vintage till, and Coca Cola memorabilia all over the shop. It’s been open for a little over a year, but due to its location is something of a hidden gem and can be found behind the Villaggio VIP car park and on the edge of Aspire Park. The concept is inspired by New York, but the enterprise is entirely Qatari-run. There are but a few eateries in Doha that aren’t franchises from foreign countries, so on that merit alone, Burgeri stands out. With a sip of a truly sinful Oreo milkshake (worth every minute on the treadmill), we look around Burgeri. We could be downtown in any US city; it has huge windows, and the light just pours in. Bricks, white tiles, booths, and lights that were sourced from all over the world. There’s a lot of up-cycling going on. The smell is delicious. After a long discussion about my obsession with avocados, Yogi, the venue’s sales and marketing coordinator suggests the avocado burger. a kick to it, the cool crunch of the onions hits the creaminess of the guacamole, and the spiciness lingers just long enough. The burger bun is branded with a “B” for Burgeri, which is a lovely touch. The artistry of Chef Juan Carlos, originally from Ecuador, latterly working in New York, specialising in fish burger, is one of the reasons to visit this place; the way he delicately handles the burgers show you how seriously they take burgers at Burgeri. With four new burgers on the menu, the hawaiian is the most popular. Badir, FACT’s resident foodie tries it out, “It’s
perfectly done. I love the pineapple and the turkey ham, its really great combination,” he said, munching away. “And it’s such a good size, too.” It’s difficult to find a decent burger in Doha, or indeed anywhere. It’s deceptively simple looking; patty, buns, plus a relish. But it’s difficult sourcing good ingredients in Doha (Burgeri source its meat from the US), and its sauces are homemade. The little touches really make the difference; it was easily the best burger we’ve had in Doha, and finally, it feels like the burger is in its proper setting. In our opinion, a burger has no
business in a five-star restaurant and most fast-food chains serve depressing substitutes for a good slab of meat. Burgeri channels the hipster cafés of New York and the food vans of the West Coast. It’s safe to say that Burgeri really cares about burgers! It’s simply burgerlicious!

A good Grilling At Four Seasons
fact magazine .95
VENUE REVIEW
A yummy breakfast can really set you up for the day, especially if it’s by the beach. We take a trip to the Pool Grill Alfresco to see what healthy and hearty goodness it offers! Words by Laura Hamilton
There is something very indulgent about going for breakfast at a five-star hotel. This month’s venue review takes place at one of Doha’s best – The Four Seasons… For most people, the first meal of the day is often forgotten, or eaten on the go, as we rush through our hectic lives, latte in one hand and smart phone in the other. As the saying goes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and we should definitely take more time for it. So, on a Saturday morning I headed over to The Four Seasons to try out their breakfast. 96. fact magazine
The Pool Grill Alfresco has a very relaxed atmosphere. The wooden decking has a view onto the beach and of the far side of the Corniche, and the fresh sea breeze gently flows through the gazebo. It’s slightly too hot to sit out in the sun, but luckily the Grill is under the shade and it makes all the difference. Breakfast al fresco… what exactly is it about eating outside that renders you at one with nature? With a slight breeze and the sea in front of me, my worries slid away like water from a duck’s feathers. I had opted to go alone, as I’m not exactly a morning person (I can’t make conversation until 10:30 sharp), and the lovely staff brought me a selection of foreign magazines. As a fashion person, and a magazine writer, I was in heaven; perusing Dutch trends in between gazing dreamily out at the sea and sipping my mango smoothie, thinking about the day ahead and feeling like I was on holiday. All the options were tempting. Do I go for the Dutch Pancake Lover option (sweet pancake or savoury) or the Middle Eastern breakfast? The full English breakfast or the healthy option? I can never usually resist anything sweet, but my head told me to go for the healthy option, and I wasn’t disappointed. The portions were generous; poached eggs, asparagus and mixed grilled vegetables, shitake
mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and toast, presented in separate iron dishes. Shitake mushrooms are not something I would generally associate with breakfast food, but marinate as they were in a sharp and deliciously chewy. They did not last long, at all. Although I was in the shade, it was a little too hot at the time, but luckily the weather has broken now and we are officially in autumn. While most people will be making the most of the weather by attending beach parties etc, there is something quite decadent and leisurely about breakfasting al fresco a la luxury. It does it set you up for the day, whether it’s a long one in the office or a relaxing one on the beach!

CUCINA DE BADIR
CUCINA DE BAdir
F
On this episode of La Cucina De Badir, I will be exploring the world of Asian cuisine at the famous Spice Market in W Doha Hotel & Residences. If you haven’t stopped by Spice Market yet, let me tell you something, you’re missing out! Asian food with a unique twist, created by Chef Mads Wolff and his amazing team, I was lucky enough to share the kitchen with these culinary masters.
or this month’s feature I was super excited, though a little nervous; you see, Asian cuisine isn’t really my cup of tea, and now I had to cook it with the pros! However, this was a challenge that Cucina De Badir was going to accept. Geared up in my chef ’s coat, I was ready to get in the kitchen with Chef Mads Wolff. The first dish we prepare is Black Pepper Shrimp with Sun-Dried Pineapple, a best seller at Spice Market. We head over to the professional wok station where cooking requires real skill. It takes me a few moments to get comfortable and master the technique. We add oil to a hot wok, followed by garlic, ginger and scallion, all fried over medium heat until they are a nice golden colour. Staying on track with Chef Wolff, I add the remaining ingredients, including black beans, squeezed and chopped, black pepper corn, sweet soy, soy, sugar and salt to taste. The pineapple has been baked on low heat in a special oven, for around four hours – this gives the pineapple a crunchy texture and delicious taste. Then we add oil, salt and pepper in the wok and fry the shrimp until cooked and crisp (be careful not to burn them!). Plating up is next; I align the shrimp into a straight line and place the pineapple besides it, pouring some of the black sauce over it. Final touches include scattering a bit of Jicama over the shrimp and adding some pea shots too. The second dish is Hammour Fish with Malaysian Chilli Sauce. The sauce
is made up of garlic and ginger in grape seed oil with scallion, guilin chilli sauce, light soy sauce, rice vinegar, shaoxing and sugar (it was simply mouthwatering!). To cook the fish it was very simple; rub and coat the Hammour in salt and paper then pan-fry it until both sides develop a crispy texture. After this, put it in the oven for around four minutes. Plating up is simple; use Thai basil oil for a green colour on the presentation, and for garnishing use celery, brunoise and blanched basil oil. Chef Mads has one last treat, and though I’m not a huge dessert fan, I’m eager to give it a go! Dubbed Thai Jewels and Fruits on Crushed Coconut Ice, for this amazing desert it’s all about beautiful colours combined with coconut ice. Using wonderful exotic ingredients such as Mali sauce, palm sugar, vanilla bean, salt, Mali syrup, coconut milk, and vanilla beans, as well as the usual cup of sugar, salt and milk, we prepare a yummy coconut sauce. To plate this gorgeous desert, everything is added into a large mixing bowl. Coconut pieces, palm seeds, jackfruit and red papaya are tossed together and top off the coconut ice in a serving bowl, with the coconut sauce poured over – scrumptious to say the least. Spice Market was hands-down a success! For now, hasta luego and see you on the next episode of La Cucina De Badir.

Your favourite outdoor activity or hangout in Doha… Souq Waqif is always a good option as it has such a wide variety of cuisines to choose from such as Malaysian, French, and Indian. It provides an excellent place for people to gather, shop for traditional knick-knacks, spices or just enjoy a good meal. The seasonal events that take place there are great for the kids as I have two young sons who love to be entertained. Another great outdoor space is Katara Village with its rich cultural focus and large choice of activities.
