FEEL THE BREEZE

The greatest adventure lies outside.

I

f you’ve been loving the temperature drop this month (I can’t imagine why not) then get ready to make major plans over the winter season. Every year, we like to bring you the best of Doha’s outdoor dining scene, because, let’s face it - being able to go to a restaurant or lounge and actually sit outside (and not melt in five seconds) is a novelty that we need to take advantage of in the cooler months. And because we all know that food is a focal point here in Doha, what better way to enjoy the winter breeze than dinner on a terrace, ladies night at a rooftop lounge and more bearable beach and garden soirees, whether it be brunch, lunch or another themed night offering. Turn to p29 for Dine Out and get your calendars at the ready, we’ve got the only list of cool al fresco spots you need to know about. Pick your faves, book a table and have a great time! This season is also ideal for city staycations - you can really enjoy the surroundings and offerings of your weekend home away from home. So, with unique experiences in mind, this month’s local escape comes courtesy of the forever beautiful Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels by Tivoli (p45). Read all about the meandering magic of these small hospitality havens and why you should book a stay, pronto. Celebrating our very first love, the love of food (of course), our monthly Culinary Spotlight takes place at a dining favourite, Toro Toro Doha (p83), whilst the Foodie Corner takes you on a Friday Brunch journey at The Lagoon, The Ritz-Carlton Doha (p87), and our New In Town spot goes to Sumo Sushi & Bento (p91). Each one is an excellent choice for food lovers all over Doha who want tasty cuisine and yummy shots for the ‘gram! You’ll find everything from fashion and beauty, tech and motoring, travel and exciting deals and events to keep your November filled with fun. Diet starts next month year (New Year’s resolution anyone?). Until 2017’s very last issue, happy eating - outside! ☺

BLOOMING BEAUTIFUL

QATAR’S VERY FIRST FOREVER ROSE boutique has officially opened in the luxurious Al Hazm Mall in Doha, cementing the notion of everlasting love for those passionate about romance and luxury. Founded in London, Forever Rose has emerged as a purveyor of the world’s finest roses, first developing a name amongst high society for its luxurious, customised floral artistry throughout the royal palaces of Europe. Derived from the mineral rich volcanic soils of Ecuador in South America, Forever Roses set themselves apart with their uniquely strong petals which grow up to ten times thicker and five times larger than any other blooms available on the market. Without the need for water or sunlight, these outstanding roses retain their striking natural beauty forever when protected in the glass dome, as seen on the signature Bella or three years and beyond for the stunning ‘open air’ roses, such as The Rose Cube. Further to the iconic glass cased Bella’s and long lasting arrangements, the company also supplies freshly cut garden roses alongside a range of other luxury gifting items such as an exclusive in-house women’s and men’s fragrances and a gorgeous bespoke range of Forever Rose bespoke diamond jewellery. LEGENDARY BAKLAVA W DOHA HOTEL & RESIDENCES has recently welcomed Baklava Master, Chef Ilyas Kahraman, to wow its guests with the favourite Arabic dessert staple. With over 30 years of Baklava-making expertise and two decades working in top hotels and restaurants in Turkey and Russia, Chef Ilyas is a valuable addition to their lineup of decorated chefs. Baklavas, being a popular Middle Eastern delight, will be served at W Café in 14 different varieties; and will be sold in individual portions or big assortments for special occasions including weddings, engagements, birthdays, corporate functions, Eid celebrations and other gatherings. Chef Ilyas Kahraman’s passion for Baklavas started when he was only 10-years-old, making Baklavas during summer break under the guidance of a professional mentor. Gaziantep, Kahraman’s hometown is famous for baked food and delicacies in general, including Baklavas, which prompted Ilyas Kahraman to specialise for five years in Baklava-making after graduating from high school. By the age of 20, he moved to Istanbul to work in Güllüoğlu Baklava shop, the most prestigious Baklava maker in the country, after which he introduced his exquisite Baklava creations to different Turkish cities such as Izmir, Ankara and Antalia to name a few; before going international to Russia, and now Qatar. Highlighting what distinguishes his Baklavas, Chef Ilyas swears by the traditional method. He says: “Each baklava is cooked to perfection and takes two hours of preparing 60 layers of filo pastry drenched in homemade sweet syrup and Turkish nuts, creating a delightful culinary masterpiece.” Baklava is ready to become the talk of the town and W Café is the place to get your fix! ✤

hether flying in as a tourist or having lived in Doha for years, you’re guaranteed to be surprised when you stay in one of the Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels by Tivoli. Ensconced within the bustling mercantile metropolis that is Souq Waqif, lies nine bespoke boutique hotels that transport you into an oasis far away from mundane life. They offer the highest quality of service that is particularly personalised to each guest. This is what I found when I checked in for a weekend staycation at the majestic Al Jasra Hotel. None of the properties are big, and that’s the beauty of it. Mine certainly wasn’t but what it did have is an intimate and cosy feel with immaculate design. My spacious room had impressive wall paintings, high ceilings, a humoungous bed and a bath that was possibly bigger than the bed (no exaggeration). The bathroom was massive with his and hers wash basins and compartmentalised shower and lavatory. I was spoiled staying in a Presidential Suite and my every want and need was tended to. A weekend was not long enough - a week may just have sufficed. When I dropped my bags in my suite with a balcony that looked out over the souq, I paid a visit to the best Moroccan restaurant you can visit in the country, Argan, to taste their signature lamb tagine with caramelised prunes and almonds while sitting in a colourful majlis. I then had a relaxing afternoon in their Moroccan Hammam and was scrubbed to within an inch of my life. My whole body felt refreshed and my skin was exfoliated. Black soap was used first then a eucalyptus oil before I was scrubbed down head to heel with a kessa. I was completely rejuvenated as a person could possibly be within just an hour. The gym there was a fabulous way of enjoying some individual downtime in a well equipped, spacious facility that I had all to myself. There was no fighting for dumb bells or a spare rowing machine here! There are so many eating options within the boutique hotels that you need not leave your weekend sanctuary. fact magazine

One of the greatest standouts during our weekend stay at Al Jasra Hotel was the people. From the doorman to the front desk, the housekeeping team and other members of staff, you can expect to find exceptionally friendly and helpful people at Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels by Tivoli. A young man in the lobby of my hotel was so keen to extend the hand of Qatari hospitality that he would not let me go out one morning without offering me some local karak tea and dates. The gesture was as memorable as the tea. Service was almost faultless. If I had to give it any criticism, it would be to say that staff were too helpful by half - but not intrusive, you still get plenty of privacy and alone time to enjoy the surroundings. The staff want you to relax and have a great time leaving all your worries aside. The hotels also offer guided tours of the souq so if you’re not sure where to start, where to shop and what to do, they’ll even point you in the right direction and give you some tips on how to barter for the best bargain. As far as staycations go, Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels really do have that extra special edge over other 5-star hotels in Doha; location is on point, views are breathtaking, service is impeccable and, most of all, you’ll get a cultural experience with ALL the comforts of both home and a hotel - what more could we really ask for? ✤

Al Shurfa Arabic Lounge in Al Jomrok Hotel has great Lebanese food but is outdone by the glorious views it offers looking out across the sea and the West Bay skyline with glimpses of the Emiri Diwan on the left and the Museum of Islamic Art on the right. The roof terrace there is a perfect place to share some shisha with friends and feel the oncoming winter breeze. Another great spot is Al Matbakh Lounge which was recently transformed as a culinary concept and is now serving hot, wholesome and tasty Indian dishes. I tried their tandoori chicken which came out sizzling and smoking on a grill and enjoyed a brilliant butter chicken. Al Terrace is another great outlet and is part of Al Mirqab Boutique Hotel, and as the name suggests, it’s a restaurant with a beautiful terrace! Bask on it and enjoy some hummus and tabouleh or a succulent shish taouk at the back of the bustle of the souq, slightly hidden away. Another spot that made the weekend special was La Pattiserie which is part of Al Bidda and located in a lane that leads towards the sea where I enjoyed some macaroons, cafe au lait as well as a great brie baguette and some onion soup. It was delightfully French and tasted lush! I have never spent this concentrated quantity of time in the Souq before but I was amazed by its secret hot spots, vast scale and the eco system of how this subculture operates. It is totally pedestrianised though easy to get lost as you meander through its colourful lanes and walkways passing pet shops, stalls selling spices and of course the infamous gold and silver souqs. fact magazine

f I were to pen a book, I’d want to spend an indefinite amount of time at the Ceylon Tea Trails. I knew this from the second we left dust bowl Colombo and our four by four starting to snake up and around the rows of tea buds and leaves into a green paradise. It was barely past seven in the morning, the pale mist was rising and curling over the hills towards the high blue sky. Despite the unpaved and at times, stomach churning drive, the vistas were so beguiling, I indulged in the sluggish pace and took it all in. I arrived at the Summerville Bungalow at midday, one of five bungalows part of the Dunkeld Estate in Hatton founded by Merrill J Fernando in 2005. A perfectly craggy pathway led to the twee, pale yellow front door where my warm-faced butler was waiting for me, ready to scoop up my luggage with hearty haste and give me a personalised tour. Picture if you will, a remote cottage overlooking the still, moody blue Castlereagh lake surrounded by vast swathes of green hills and thick manes of trees, speckled with polychrome flowers and low-lying broccoli shaped clouds where thin slices of sun occasionally spill through. Although you’re in

“Wonderfully, the wild outnumber the humans.”

the depths of Hatton, Sri Lanka, there are close echoes of the Scottish Highlands courtesy of the all-encompassing rich and broody nature. Wonderfully, the wild outnumber the humans. Quiet is your companion at the Summerville Bungalow and back to my initial reaction, it’s the stuff of dreams for a wordsmith. The bedroom features a glorious four poster bed. The furnishings are wooden and tastefully colonial. The bathroom calls for oo-ing and aa-ing in its own right. A standalone bathtub over Victorian black and white tiling, complete with gorgeously scented accoutrements adds to the luxury of the stay. It has an overall upmarket B&B feel to it; it’s personal and quaint. The patio doors open up

to a set of deck chairs and another vision to behold. I communed with the wilderness for hours on end, read appropriately slow and romantic literature, closed my eyes and let the booms of nature ripple through me without feeling the slightest itch of boredom. Despite sharing the bungalow with other guests, they were nowhere to be found or heard. Bliss. Nothing is spoiled by 21st century gadgetry at the Summerville Bungalow. With the exception of the iPod dock in the living room area crooning out a rolling playlist of Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra as well as a small and discreet flat screen TV, the space is devoid of modern interruptions. The living room ought to be Pinterest’s poster for ‘décor

goals’ – there are throws, there are ornate lampshades with dainty detailing, there are coffee table books, there are second hand library books and there’s a well-stocked bar with gentry-approved tipples next to a roaring fire – being over 4000ft above sea level here means the temperatures are refreshingly cooler and invites a cosy up on the sofa. The veranda overlooking the infinity pool has five tables set up (five suites, five tables) – you see the tea plantations ahead of you, which never ceases to tire the eyes. As the Summerville Bungalow is in a remote location, your food and beverage is included in the stay. Each meal is elegantly plated and inspired by the local land. You eliminate any sinful diet sabotaging despite eating three course meals, three times a day because the portions are delicate and the ingredients come in their purest form and cooked with expert freshness. A standout soup had to be the pumpkin as well as the leek and potato bisque while the baked yoghurt with clumps of blackberries in the middle can only be described as special. You can also feast on a Sri Lankan spread which includes a courgette curry, fish curry, rice with fried (but still lean tasting) cashews and onions and Vattalappam for dessert, a type of custard finishing. While you could effectively spend your entire time holed up in the bungalow, there’s an impressive roster of activities on offer. You can take to the hills and hike, you can bird watch, visit Kandy, brace white water rafting or even go fishing in the Castlereagh lake. I stayed put for 48 hours and embraced the pause the experience offered. By nightfall, the surroundings are opaque black – not even the contours of the hills can be seen but in the opposite and nearby bungalows, ambient lighting seep the windows and the magic of the Ceylon Tea Trail experience is sealed off beautifully. fact magazine

T

o get to Cape Weligama from the Tea Trails, you need to factor in a six-hour drive or a seaplane option that shaves off over three-quarters of the aforementioned time frame. However, in the interest of seeing the changing landscapes from the high hills to the headland where Cape Weligama is positioned, the drive suited my adventurous sensibilities. What could have been a thumb twirling, exhaustive ride, turned out to be six hours gone in a poof. Plugged into a series of podcasts, I leaned against a constant picture window of rich foliage interspersed with gentle smiles and frantic waves from locals as we threaded between dusty villages. As we came back down to sea level, the steamy streets widened my eyes. The pace and cacophony built up to a rush hour crescendo. But there’s something so glorious about being a spectator to this madness, where you don’t move an inch but the outside world spins around you and that grating noise is but a murmur from the inside. After wading through traffic, we approached the barelythere entrance to Cape Weligama, as if it were a hushed secret. The tone was set for my beach escape. With just another 50-meter drive to the reception, the property is properly secluded. After an aromatic welcome drink, I was whisked off in a buggy to my villa. The 18 hectares, sumptuous property is atop a vast cliffside on an Indian Ocean headland near Galle with 39 villas and suites. I was staying in an ocean villa that had the privacy level of a manor and a shared garden pool (although I monopolised the pool as the next-door villa wasn’t occupied). You don’t get the tidal wave of tourists here. The villa follows the rules of colour pop minimalism offset against antique wooden cabinets and a broad desk that can fit an entire office of stationary. The bathroom offers private vantage points for views of the ocean below. I almost asked for a floor plan of the villa for it’s larger than most apartments you’d find in any city. It felt like I had come to my holiday home where I’d spend an entire two months basking in the uninterrupted views of the shimmering ocean, eat buckets of prawns swimming in garlic, watch my limbs turn brown and my hair change a shade lighter. I stepped onto the patio, continuing this mental fantasy and breathed in the salt of the air. Ahead of me were the slow, crashing waves which were as soothing as they were stirring. It drew me in; I walked towards the ocean, went down the many steps to get to the bottom and enjoyed the

stretch of sand that went into the far distance. The waves bounced and frothed against the biscuit-coloured cliffs – I dodged the incoming waves with child-like squeals. I never felt so dwarfed by nature, so insignificant yet so alive. The wild waters can test the strongest of swimmers (I kept to a quick foot paddle) but the default experience is to just watch. Up at the property again, I took a postcard of the resort from my villa and snapped a meta photo of me holding up the card against the exact image, in the exact spot in real life and time. ‘Postcards from the edge’ I called it. The moment simply called for it. Quite literally, I was on the edge of the infinity pool with its glassy waters, overlooking the ocean. Lots of likes on Instagram. My aim of cultivating green-eyed envy worked. Even I was jealous of that post and I was immersed, full-body, in it! Luxury exists in every part of Cape Weligama. For such a sprawling property, not one blade of grass is left to wither. I spent a few hours scoping out the grounds, bumped into the general manager, Dirk, who was on his maintenance rounds, spoke with roaming members of staff who were always generous with their time and resources and finally settled on a lush tropical patch of garden outside my villa with some complimentary snacks – which make all the difference for a detail-oriented traveller like yours truly. Although I could have indulged in a lavish breakfast-inbed scenario, I awoke each morning at the break of dawn to the rustle of palm trees and birdsong and made the short but pleasant walk to the all-day dining restaurant, Ocean Terrace, where I picked between a Sri Lankan breakfast and a few Continental comforts. Having exotic wild fruits with a fluffy buttered croissant while transfixed by the ludicrously beautiful views of the rugged coastline ahead, is like a dream you don’t want to wake up from. Normally I’m a breakfast on-the-go girl but here, the reverse transpired. I whiled away two unplanned hours. Everything was peachy and warm. Other culinary offerings include the Ocean Grill restaurant. There, I got my fill of chicken teriyaki with avocado (tastes miles better in Sri Lanka) as well as a pungent ceviche followed by a row of splendid sorbets. As I retreated to my villa on the last night, I sat out on the patio on one of the cushioned (so comfortable it was like a mattress) sofas. I didn’t do anything. I didn’t need to. Just being was fulfilling enough. The atmosphere was whisper-quiet, only broken by the midnight waves. As I contemplated my lamentably looming departure, my thoughts turned to a quote from the works of Ibn Battuta: “Travelling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” ✤

BIG SCREEN Justice League WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Inspired by Superman’s selfless sacrifice for humanity, Bruce Wayne pairs up with his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Whilst Batman and Wonder Woman unite to recruit a team of metahumans to help fight against this newly awakened threat. Can the unprecedented league of heroes save the planet from catastrophe?

DIRECTOR: Zack Snyder CAST: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Shaping up to be the biggest cinematic event in Warner Brother’s superhero history, Justice League is a direct sequel to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The film witnesses the coming together of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, under the helm of the legendary Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon. With the world in imminent danger, it is up to Batman and Wonder Woman and their team of metahuman heroes, including The Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman to protect humanity as the Justice League. Featuring a much more mature Wonder Woman and a more hopeful Batman, Justice League is an interesting product of two directors. The film manages to shake things up on the superhero scene while staying true to the DC legacy. If anything, watch it for Jason Mamoa’s flawless portrayal of Aquaman - drool central.

Highlights

The film manages to shake things up on the superhero scene while staying true to the DC legacy.

Lady Bird WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

With her family struggling after the loss of her husband’s job, Marion McPherson, a California nurse, steps up to keep her family afloat. The film follows Marion as she tries to make ends meet while maintaining a turbulent relationship with her equally loving, strong-willed and deeply opinionated teenage daughter.

– Justice League

DIRECTOR: Greta Gerwig CAST: Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

An incredibly raw and gritty tale of family, society and adolescence, Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut envelops you in genuine, deeply-felt emotion. Covering semi-autobiographical ground, Gerwig relates the story of a confused teenage girl in Sacramento, full to the brim with lofty aspirations of where she’ll be heading to college. Clashing frequently with mother Marion (Laurie Metcalf), Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan) has a very different sense of the world than her mother. Exhibiting exceptional attention to detail and a jaunty pace, the soulbarring dramedy grants all of its characters equal respect while being downright frank and funny. 56

Scream Above the Sounds

By Stereophonics

While alternative rock has always been our go-to for impromptu jam sessions, there’s no denying that Stereophonics are truly slaying the game! Fortunately for us, the Welsh rock band is all set to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Word Gets Around with Scream Above the Sounds. The anthemic tenth studio album blends a number of different sounds to create a very contemporary record. All In One Night, an observational track, reflects the big, bold rock songwriting that made us fall in love with the band in the first place. While the track may sound a little lackluster when compared to their previous work, it still holds its own. Written from the people’s point of view on the changing climate of the world, all the songs on the album carry a sense of release. Beginning with a brave opening statement, Caught by the Wind brings together catchy lyricism and eager cheers for a definite crowd pleaser. A record that shows just how far the Welsh quartet has come.

COUNTRY/ POP

Glasshouse

Following the tragic demise of her husband after a grueling fight against pancreatic cancer, journalist and author Joyce Maynard recounts their relationship. Capturing their whirlwind romance, a marriage cut short by tragedy and Joyce’s return to singlehood on new terms, it’s a heartbreaking yet lifeaffirming take on true love.

By Jessie Ware The queen of lovelorn anthems and heartbreak elegance, Jessie Ware is back with her third studio album and it’s going to give you all the feels! Glasshouse is very close to the songstress’ heart. An increasingly personal record, it’s packed with stunning vocals and vivid storytelling. Floating over an undulating synth melody, the complex track Midnight beautifully captures the magic and terror that comes with falling in love. Reaching the upper limits of her range, the singer exhibits an explosiveness we have never heard from her before. Her subtle, steely and sensual voice documents a tumultuous relationship in the intriguing single, Selfish Love. Bridging the gap between R&B, soul and the sounds of British dance music, Jessie Ware’s style of adult contemporary is a gift that just keeps on giving.

#ROLLS #ROYCE #MOTOR #CARS #DOHA #HOSTS #ICONIC #EXHIBITION Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Doha transformed its showroom into an art gallery last month to host an exhibition by renowned Qatari artist Abdul Hameed Al Siddiqi. The ultra-luxury brand’s sole dealer in Qatar displayed numerous works by Siddiqi, including the debut of some never-before-seen pieces. The highlight of the exhibit saw Siddiqi sketch live in front of VIP guests and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Doha customers. Fittingly, with the exhibit interspersing the showroom’s iconic cars, Siddiqi depicted one of the latest Rolls-Royce models in his renowned style, featuring Doha’s skyline in the background.

NISSAN KICKS

FOR URBAN DRIVING

• CITY RIDES

A compact crossover set to redefine its segment with style, practicality and innovative technology for every metropolitan motorist. FACT takes the all-new Nissan Kicks out onto the roads for a test drive and here’s the verdict…

W

hen you’re choosing a vehicle to drive in Doha, what do you look for? Is it the exterior design? Or is it interior comfort? Maybe you like technological features, or are you all about easy driving? Whatever it is that you look for in a car, pay attention because Nissan Middle East wants to give you ALL of this and then some with the brand new crossover, the Nissan Kicks. Launched a few months ago into the Middle East market, Nissan has now ticked more boxes for drivers who want a crossover that combines innovation and class with style and performance. Let us tell you all about what makes this model so special… The Nissan Kicks is solely aimed at urban driving environments – think everywhere from leafy suburbs to compound communities, the laid back Doha Corniche and even rush hour in West Bay. It’s abundant features cater to the Qatar driver’s every motoring need; on the few windy days we drove the car, its robust exterior was like a guard against the heavy breeze, whilst the car’s generous ground clearance (200mm) provides an elevated driving position and a high eye point for excellent all-round visibility - something that you’ll appreciate when it gets busy on the roads. 60

fact magazine

The Nissan Kicks also handles very well – its agile and smooth maneuverability makes the car a joy to drive (turning something that can be a stressful task in the Doha, into an enjoyable one). If you’re all about looks, you should know that this car is VERY visually appealing. The Kicks features established Nissan design signatures such as the V-motion grille which dominates the car’s front end. Also present are the boomerang head and taillights, and the “floating” coupé-style roof with a wrap-around visor look to the windscreen and side glass. To put it simply, for us, as young professionals working in the city – this is definitely a car that is perfect for getting you to important meetings as well as being the designated ride for an evening out with friends. The body features an advanced aerodynamic design, which optimises fuel consumption (we were impressed that a full tank cost was no more than QR80) and minimises noise. The spacious interior too, is instantly recognisable as a Nissan design thanks to the gliding wing shape stretching the width of the dashboard – not to mention, seats are super spacious and comfortable, especially ideal for those leisurely drives between the city and the outskirts, or weekend road trips further afield. The Kicks is packed with features to help the driver in every way.

CITY RIDES •

THE NISSAN KICKS TARGETS YOUNG PEOPLE WHO

It’s the first model to utilise the concept of Nissan Intelligent Mobility which uses smart, relevant technology to make the driver’s life easier while also making advances towards Nissan’s long term goal of zero emission and zero fatality motoring. The Nissan Kicks targets young people who are early adopters of forward-thinking technology and those who appreciate and embrace the way it can both simplify urban driving and connect them more easily to what matters. In that regard, the Intelligent Mobility features within the Kicks aim to reduce stress for drivers through innovations such as the Around View Monitor (AVM) and the Moving Object Detection system (MOD). Parking is also a breeze; using four cameras, placed at the front and rear of the car and in both door mirrors, AVM creates a bird’s eye 360-degree view of the car which can be displayed on the central monitor and used as a parking aid. The cameras automatically get to work when you shift to R (reverse) mode, and in places like Doha where street parking, general side stops and even tight spaces in the mall can be difficult to navigate, having the cameras is a HUGE help.

MOD is another great benefit of the Kicks: when the MOD system detects a moving object – a pedestrian, for example – a warning is sounded to alert the driver to the hazard and prevent a potential accident. This could help those drivers who may forget to check their blind spots when switching lanes or on those tricky corners with pedestrian crossings. Safety is the name of the game! The tech doesn’t stop there. Kicks owners will relish the convenience and simplicity of the suite of systems that are accessible via the centrally-mounted, 7-inch colour touchscreen. These functions include navigation, audio, and bluetooth phone connections. Complementing the touchscreen, and ideally located in front of the driver, a further screen in the main cluster of dials relays information from the on-board drive computer, audio system and navigation systems, as well as displaying warnings. Vehicle settings can be easily adjusted using the four-way selector on the steering wheel. We found that the maps on the navigation system were not suited for manual input; there was limited recognition of streets, buildings and specific locations like hotel names. However, the way around this is to lock into the Sat Nav under “points of interest” – from big malls to apartment towers, your nearest petrol station and even street parking spots – the GPS system had a good amount of places to lead you to the right area. A great help for those who may not be so familiar with Doha roads, and for those times when you might run out of data on your phone! Among a host of comfort and safety technologies included in Kicks, its chassis control, supported by

advanced electronic systems known as Active Trace Control, Active Ride Control and Active Engine Brake, is a truly outstanding feature. Active Trace Control is an innovation that intervenes during driving through corners to ensure the intended trajectory is maintained by discreetly applying brakes to wheels individually. This has the effect of preventing a sudden loss of grip or stability. Similarly, Active Ride Control, applies the brakes for a split-second after the car has encountered large undulations in the road, to reduce the “bounce” effect on the suspension. This simple, effective solution is lighter and less complex than expensive and heavy adaptive damping systems. To counter the “coasting” effect often associated with automatic and CVT gearboxes, Kicks is equipped with Active Engine Brake. When the accelerator is released, typically approaching a corner, engine braking is applied to stabilise the speed. This range of tech will help on main roads to give you a smoother drive as well as tight corners in underground parking, for example, and every on-road situation that may require the your car to come to your rescue. Nissan Kicks has class-leading fuel efficiency thanks to its advanced 1.6-litre engine and lightweight platform. Power is rated at 88kW (118HP) and torque of 149Nm, so you’ll get the added benefit of superb performance too. Word of warning: there were some days when the automatic unlocking of the car took a while. Whether it was the key or another element, it took us around 10 minutes of circling the car and pressing the key for it to respond. A malfunction that isn’t ideal, but nowhere near a good enough reason to put us off! The Kicks keeps things compact with the most tasteful design and technologically-driven features. This is NOT a mum and dad car. It’s for the young professional who wants to be at the top of their game in both business and pleasure – a refined vehicle to safely and stylishly cruise the roads. ✤ fact magazine

THE PROPERTY BROTHERS If you’re into DIY TV, you’ve definitely heard of the twins that make home dreams come true. FACT’s quick Q&A with the world-renowned design and décor gurus, the Property Brothers, will give you a taste of what’s coming up in Season 9 of the popular show airing on HGTV Arabia, this month. Meet Jonathan and Drew Scott…

PROPERTY BROTHERS The Property Brothers are determined to help couples find, buy and transform extreme fixer-uppers into the ultimate forever home, and since it’s hard to see beyond a dated property’s shortcomings, they’re using state-of-the-art CGI to reveal their vision of the future. Can they convince these hesitant homebuyers to take a radical risk? And can they complete their ambitious project on time and on budget? Hi guys! Your jobs take you to different cities all over the U.S., how does working in each location differ? JS: It’s fascinating doing construction in all these different cities because construction in LA is completely different than New Orleans and even different from New York. So you have to understand the local market, the climate, what people want in a home and that’s how you develop your plan. Where do you draw your design inspiration from? DS: We travel all over the world and we pull inspiration for our designs and our ideas from anywhere we go, whether it’s a castle in Scotland or an old cathedral or even an industrial park. I mean, we love the fact that we can pull from any aspect of our lives and our travel to put something into a design for our homeowners. JS: Design is always evolving. Some things come back which is 80

fact magazine

exciting to see, some things we never want to come back, because those things are gone for a purpose. But it’s nice to blend those things together and find something that works for the homeowners that we’re dealing with. It’s nice when Drew comes to me and says, “Hey you know what? I saw something when I was at some resort” or “I was at a hotel, what about doing something like this in a residential application?” And I’ll take that as a challenge and then I’ll find a way to make it work in a space. DS: We are always looking for ways to inspire ourselves and everything we do in our lives and in turn that’s going to inspire everybody to watch our shows. JS: Would you say that I inspire you? DS: You do. Kind of just a little bit (whispering). Many people around the world live in small abodes. What are some tips for maximising space and increasing efficiency when you don’t have the luxury of room? DS: You have to be really smart with design when you’re working with a small space. Multifunction pieces are a great way to maximise the use of your space. Even a small space can be stunning and it depends on what sort of features you put into it. It could be your light fixture, it could be the colour palette on your walls, and something simple can go a long way. JS: The smaller the space, the more cleaver the solutions you have to find. Lighter, brighter and you always want to make sure you’re looking for multi-functioning pieces. Bigger is not always better when it comes to your living space, it’s all about character and what you’re putting in for inspiration. ✤

here is never a bad time to go to Toro Toro Doha, one of the hottest restaurants in the city. I’ve always described it as the perfect place for a special occasion and I know I’m not the only one who thinks so. But it is a particularly special time if you go to the new Caballeros Steak Night. A deliciously-designed menu caters for the perfect date, dinner catch up with friends or a meaty treat to satisfy those cravings. Like with all things at Toro Toro, the key to their menu is sharing so make sure you order lots and have a little of each other’s choices. That’s because this place is a creative blend of pan-Latin styles and flavours so you’re going to want to try a variety of dishes. You’re assigned a waiter who tends to you all evening and you’ll be his first and almost only priority. The encyclopaedic knowledge that the waiters have about the menu they

are delivering is a testament to their training from the executive chef. And they don’t keep you waiting long either. Moorish cheesy Peruvian bread is brought to the table as you peruse the menu. You are then invited to select a couple of cold and hot appetisers. We tried the tuna tataki which saw pan-seared slices of tuna with yellow acevichada, passionfruit reduction and crispy wonton all ready to be devoured. The sea bass tartare was also pretty special and was served as a corn cake topped with coriander and coconut marinated sea bass - beautiful. From the hot appetisers I tucked into beef fillet anticucho which is a dish of beef tenderloin skewers marinated with Mirasol chilli served with roast corn palm heart salad. A similar dish with chicken is also available. I couldn’t resist the beef cheeks which is a very popular menu item in this restaurant and I implore you to choose it the next time you visit Toro Toro. The beef cheeks have been slow cooked

for eight hours on Chicha Morada and red vino with creamy polenta. With the exception of their beef cheeks, most of the dishes seem very small and quite light and that sense of small portion control allows for you to have a little of a lot which we love! Do be careful though. The main event is the Brazilian Picanha. Once you’re ready to get stuck into the main course a Rodizio style strip loin of beef will be brought to your table and medium rare slices will be carved off for you. You’re even given a coaster that is red on one side and green on the other. If you need a rest you leave it red side up but if you’re happy to keep on eating you leave it green. The quality of meat was absolutely superb but then that is true of all the ingredients and produce that this restaurant sources.

I was particularly struck by the detailed understanding serving staff had of what drinks compliment which menu items and the food flavours that go together. That applied detail is rare and highly valuable. It also makes your dinner at Toro Toro an unrivalled experience. I just have one question for you - what special occasion are you celebrating next because there is only one place you should do it. Toro Toro’s food, the service and the setting is just divine. We'll return, very soon! ✤

The food was incredibly light and flavourful, with the beetroot hummus impressing us the most. Then we moved to the mains at the Farmer’s Kitchen station where the

carvery counter has a great selection of meat. We opted for marinated lamb racks and roasted beef rib-eye accompanied with butter mashed potatoes and glazed celeriac. The meat was so tender and savoury, we could have honestly eaten only that and walked away completely satisfied. We couldn’t resist the porcini risotto from the Action Station, so creamy and full of tasty ingredients. Dessert is a highlight, with a good mix of indulgent options like chocolate fondant with ice cream and freshly baked homemade pies, and a variety of homemade cookies and artisanal cupcakes. The perfect way to end this wonderful Friday brunch is over a leisurely cup of coffee, listening to the sounds of the live music. SUMO Sushi & Bento

It’s no secret that sushi has become one of the most widely-enjoyed foods to eat in Doha. And when it caters to the masses but still keeps a delicious edge, we can’t argue with its popularity! FACT sent Craig Ferriman to check out exactly what it is that makes Sumo Sushi & Bento at Doha Festival City worth visiting... fact magazine

D

oha Festival City mall has fast become my new favourite shopping emporium. Though sprawling, it’s spacious. Though vast, it boasts a variety of midmarket and high street brands as well as a good cinema and the new snow dunes plus lots of great food outlets not seen before in Qatar. Put simply, it’s a really good place to spend leisure time. While at the mall, I recently checked out Sumo Sushi & Bento, sampling a number of the eateries menu items. Sushi maybe in the title but this is sushi with a twist. Catering to the fast-food market and shoppers wanting a pit stop before they continue raiding the stores, this place manages to offer something for sushi lovers and the and the young, hip, fast-food generation who want a sophisticated quick bite all at the same time. Their appetisers include highlights such as the wasabi fire shrimp which will certainly give your tongue a wake-up kick, the gyoza which are hand folded chicken dumplings seared to perfection as well as the rock ‘n’ roll shrimp which is deep fried in tempura and covered in spicy mayo. It’s a somewhat Americanised twist on shrimp tempura but super tasty all the same. Now, if you love prawns you’ll be in the right place here. I literally could not get over how many menu items included prawns; from the Vietnamese rolls which are shrimp and crabstick stuffed with thin slices of avocado through prawn tempura, to the golden ito ebi which is kunafa spun prawns deep fried to a golden crisp with sweet chilli dipping sauce. Yes, this place takes their prawns seriously and we savoured every dish with gusto! The menu was so vast it was not physically possible to try everything. I’ll be sure to try one of their bento boxes when I’m passing through for lunch next time. I did however try to tuck in to as much of the sushi as possible, but authentic it was not. Post modern, hip, edgy and cool it most certainly was. Phoenix is one of the most popular sushi rolls. It is a prawn and crabstick tempura with cucumber and seasonings rolled together and topped with salmon sweet chilli sauce and garnished with crispy salmon skin. Sauce is a key component with all sushi here. The sweet potato crunch is pretty popular and for good reason too. It comprises prawns, crabstick and avocado drizzled with mayo, sweet chilli, teriyaki sauce and crispy sweet potatoes. Yummy! The rainbow roll is topped with tuna, avocado, salmon, white fish, squid and tobiko sashimi. If it’s a place that doesn’t offer the highest of quality it certainly doesn’t lack in quantity.

The drinks at this place are some of the most thirstquenching and colourful that we’ve ever sipped on, elevating the dining experience. Let’s get one thing straight, Sumo Sushi & Bento isn’t a fine-dining, traditionally Japanese eatery. And it’s not trying to be either. Instead, this place is a warm and friendly venue with a cool vibe designed for socialising after watching a movie in the multiplex or ahead of some hard-core shopping. Be sure to check it out if you’re passing by on your next visit to Doha Festival City.✤

and the first hotel in the Middle East to have the keyless check in (open your room door with your mobile). Share with us some of your favourite cultural hotspots in Doha and why... Souq Waqif is my favourite place in Doha. It has its own historical character and shows the heritage of the country itself. Museum of Islamic arts, its impressive collection of Islamic arts makes it a cultural hub in the Middle East. Sealine is a must. Having the sea next to the dessert does make it special. There are endless number of activities and sports that can be done here.

What are some of your personal and professional goals going into the last quarter of 2017? - Keeping W Doha as the place to see and be seen for locals and expats. - To work closely with Qatar tourism authorities to position the country as a tourist destination on the new emerging markets. - To bring new, exciting food concepts to our venues and innovative entertainment programmes for the last quarter of the year. - Personally, to visit all corners of the city and to know Qatar to the fullest. To start road biking around Qatar (only during winter).
