CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER GREG HUGHES PUBLISHER EDWARD SMITH RAMI KHALIL PUBLISHING DIRECTOR CHIRINE HALABI

T

here’s a famous quote by Julia Child: “People who love to eat are always the best people” - anyone who has spent even a few minutes around me will know this to ring true. I LOVE being around foodies - I’m talking about those who can turn up at the boujiest Japanese restaurant and order like a pro one day, and appreciate a good greasy burger and milkshake the next - if you like to gather around good food amid banter and genuine vibes, you’re my kind of people, a.k.a the best kind of people. So, every year when we get back from the summer slumber and the weather starts showing signs of cooling down, one of our favourite things to check out is all the newest dining deals in town - and 2019 is bringing its A-game. With some of the world’s best restaurants on our doorsteps, Doha is really a culinary gem waiting to be discovered. Turn to p27 where we’ve rounded up 30 eats to get you through November. From elegant evenings out to after-work hotspots and the livliest weekend brunches, there’s no room for medicore food this month - only the best for our readers! Staying on the path to all things yummy, our pick of food features should give you all the hanger pangs as we take a seat at Spanish sophistication in The Cellar (p77), and the very cool and elegant Orient Pearl (p81), alongside a real gastronomic treat at El Faro (p85). All were standouts when it came to good service, atmosphere and consistently high-quality food and drinks. Travel also plays a big part in the November issue as our team brings you their experience from Alpha City - Thessaloniki, Greece in Globetrotter (p56) whilst, locally, we check into the characterful Alwadi Hotel Doha - MGallery (p38). And if that wasn’t enough, you’ve got fashion, beauty, tech and the most prominent dining and society news. November is the gateway to cooler temperatures making their way into the Doha air - we can’t wait to finally visit a restaurant and sit outside on the terrace. Let your belly lead the way and we’ll see you all in November for more hashtag food goals! ☺

Magnificent Jewels THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF QATAR OPENED THE MAGNIFICENT JEWELS OF JEAN SCHLUMBERGER: FROM THE VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS COLLECTION EXHIBITION, SHOWCASING MORE THAN 125 DAZZLING PIECES OF JEWELLERY AND ART OBJECTS.

T

he exhibition is dedicated to the vibrant and sculptural work of Jean Schlumberger (1907–1987) who transformed 20th century fashion with jewellery and accessories inspired by natural forms. On view at the National Museum of Qatar through to January 15, 2020, the exhibition includes more than 125 pieces from the Rachel Lambert Mellon Collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the largest and most comprehensive public collection of jewellery and art objects by Schlumberger. The exhibition will feature the designer’s imaginative, witty and awe-inspiring interpretations of animal and botanical subjects, particularly marine life and flowers, which combine precious metals and gemstones, as well as organic materials. Schlumberger’s dazzling jewellery and art objects, which were inspired by nature, will certainly captivate visitors, just as the museum has through its organic design, resembling a desert rose. The extraordinary works – with their vibrant colors, exquisite craftsmanship, and natural inspirations – showcase Schlumberger’s dazzling imagination and clarity of vision. Schlumberger began his career crafting costume jewellery for the French fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli in 1930s Paris, before heading his own private salon at New York’s Tiffany & Co. beginning in the 1950s. Schlumberger’s designs for objects ranging from cigarette cases and pill boxes to brooches and necklaces were popular with some of the most celebrated women of the period, among them Rachel “Bunny” Lambert Mellon (1910-2014), a noted American horticulturalist and 8

fact magazine

philanthropist, whose collection is the focus of this exhibition. Schlumberger’s designs featuring precious stones would include diverse cuts, carat size, and colour –adding a multi-faceted dynamism to each piece. A natural lapidary (gem artisan), he shaped minerals and gems using the techniques of cabochon cutting to maximise a gem’s brilliance. Highlights include: Schlumberger’s first jewellery designs inspired by objets trouvés (found objects) that he acquired in the sprawling flea markets of Paris in the mid-1930s – gold brooches, including an example featuring stray porcelain flowers made by Meissen of Germany. One of a kind, functional objects, such as an 18-karat gold “Salt Cellar,” as well as candlesticks and tabletop clocks with a signature geometric design, many of which were created for Bunny Mellon’s home, and Schlumberger’s elaborate designs for cigarette cases, pill boxes and vanity cases, which were fashionable items in the 1960s and recall the 18th and 19th century fashion for snuffboxes, sold at Tiffany & Co. and frequently commissioned Bunny Mellon. The exhibition is supported by Alfardan Group and Tiffany &Co. ✤

TRIUMPHANT SCALE El Anatsui: Triumphant Scale, the largest ever survey mounted of the work of the acclaimed artist El Anatsui – born in 1944 in Ghana – and perhaps Africa’s most prominent living artist, opened at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, a member of Qatar Foundation. AS THE EXHIBITION TITLE suggests, the survey, curated by the late OkwuiEnwezor, poet, art critic, art historian and curator and Chika Okeke-Agulu, Professor of Art History at the Department of Art and Archaeology, Princeton University, focuses on the triumphant and monumental quality of Anatsui’s sculptures. The exhibition encompasses every medium in the artist’s prodigious 50 year career, including the signature bottle-cap series developed over the last two decades, wood sculptures and wall reliefs spanning the mid-1970’s to the late 1990’s; ceramic sculptures of the late 1970’s, as well as drawings, prints and books. The exhibition is spread across ten separate gallery spaces in Mathaf. Amongst the works isLogoligi Logarithm, a specially created installation for the gallery’s performance space. Structurally related to his 2010 work Gli (Wall), in this complex site-specific work, the diaphanous form is achieved through the stitching patterns developed by Anatsui and his assistants using thin bottle cap seals. Logoligi Logarithm’s alluring play of light and material recalls the refraction of sunlight in a mist or fog. The work is dedicated to the Ghanaian poet, AtukweiOkai, who died in 2018. El Anatsui has consistently worked to transform the formal possibilities of African sculptural idioms. Over 50 years, he has repeatedly revised and reinvented his material and compositional techniques to astonishing effect - from the early smaller wooden reliefs with their incised markings and broken ceramic forms, to the monumental outdoor cement sculptures, and, more recently, the vast and spectacular metal wall and floor works, which blur the boundaries between sculpture, painting and assemblage. The artist generates meaning out of his material and technical process. For example, the bottle caps come from hard liquors introduced by Europeans as currency - and thus a means 12

fact magazine

of subjugation - during the era of transatlantic slavery and colonisation. The process of cutting, flattening, squeezing, twisting, folding and stitching together with copper wire thousands of these bottle caps into a single work, speaks to the making of human communities out of connected individual subjectivities. The exhibition is organised by Haus der Kunst, Munich in cooperation with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, the Kunstmuseum Bern and Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Prestel will publish an exhibition catalogue of 320 pages, with extensive illustrations from the artist’s archive, authored by Okwui Enwezor and Okeke-Agulu. ✤

El Anatsui: Triumphant Scale 1 October 2019 – 31 January 2020 Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art Education City, Doha, Qatar Open daily 9am to 7 pm, except Friday 1.30 pm to 7pm. Admission is free. Visit www.mathaf.org.qa.

B-LOUNGE WOWS QATAR The Ritz-Carlton, Doha’s highly anticipated lounge and restaurant is here and we’re in awe. B-LOUNGE HAS OFFICIALLY opened its doors, introducing guests to a dazzling ambience with breathtaking marina views, Asian fusion cuisine with international touches served straight from the open kitchen and a creative menu. The legendary signature musical identity is also in full form, with a subtle mixture of captivating electro-ethnic rhythms played by DJ Naz. B-lounge is a unification of this grand nature and the delicate people who live in Qatar. Layers of fabric that are suspended from the ceiling act as a screen to reflect the nature of “wind” which is the representation of this place as it creates a synergy between the lower and upper floor through the void. The timber finish ceiling on the upper floor is a recollection of window frames which has weathered away from the sea wind. The copper counter in the center of the space is like an iconic monument to represent the swirl of the wind that blows from the sea and the energy of the locals. From mixing and mingling with signature sips near the DJ booth or on the terrace, to savoring mouthwatering cuisine, B-lounge evokes a new sense of freedom, the ultimate destination in Doha to wind down or party. As night transcends the place comes alive as Doha’s place to see and be seen. ✤ 14

WOMEN IN CULTURE LEADERSHIP UCL Qatar hosted a panel discussion titled “Women in Cultural Leadership” at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA). THE EVENT BROUGHT TOGETHER speakers from some of Qatar’s most iconic cultural institutions to discuss the significant impact women leaders have on the rapid development of the museum and cultural sector in Qatar. Participants included Sheikha Reem Al-Thani, Director of Exhibitions at Qatar Museums (QM), Shaikha Nasser Al-Nassr, Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs at MIA, and Clemence Bergal, Head of Acquisitions and Collections at QM. UCL Qatar organised this public event as part of its role as a centre of excellence for the study of cultural heritage and knowledge management. The theme of cultural leadership and the role women play within the sector has received increasing attention in recent years. However, the contribution of female leaders in shaping the development of museums in the Gulf, and Qatar in particular, is overlooked. The panel’s theme was one component from a research study by Dr Catharina Hendrick, Lecturer of the MA in Museum and Gallery Practice at UCL Qatar. Catharina’s research project seeks to uncover the ways these ambitious women lead their teams and the organisation. Preliminary research findings showed that there is great respect within the cultural sector for female leaders in Qatar, particularly 16

fact magazine

due to the existence of strong role models such as Chairperson of QM, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. In fact, Qatari and non-Qatari women hold the majority of leadership positions in QM and across the museum sector in the country and come with a high level of education and experience. The research also found that, these female leaders tend to adopt a transformational leadership style, which employs emotional intelligence. This style of leadership is visionary and focuses on the long-term direction of the organisation, and fosters a culture of collaboration and nurtures and develops staff through a mix of participative and directive leadership. This means that leaders lead by example, are confident, empathetic and look at the bigger picture when making decisions. Commenting on the event, UCL Qatar’s Dr Hendrick stated: “Women have played an important role in the journey towards growing Qatar into a vibrant cultural hub in the region and today’s panel discussion was a celebration of these achievements. We were proud and pleased to share our insights and experiences, which we hope would inspire young women to pursue careers in the cultural heritage sector. These talented leaders will play an active role in Qatar’s cultural development in the future.” ✤

MEDALS FOR MUTAZ AND NAFI! The Richard Mille family of athletes was more than ever present for the 17th edition of the IAAF World Championships at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha. Two partners, Nafi Thiam and Mutaz Essa Barshim distinguished themselves by stepping on the podium.

T

here are moments in an athlete’s life when it’s now or never. In the split second when he looks up at the Doha sky, Mutaz Essa Barshim alone knows what’s going through his mind. A lifetime in the space of a heartbeat. Silence. Then the home crowd starts to chant his name—‘Mutaz! Mutaz!’ Suddenly, the little boy from Doha becomes the man who reached for Gold, clearing 2.37m. This life-changing performance was anything but guaranteed after what has uncontestably been a difficult period. Mutaz’s pre-Doha personal best this year was 2.27m. Add to this the multiple injuries he has sustained and emergency ankle surgery in 2018—victory was by no means obvious. As he leapt into the sky, however, he cast all worries to the sand below. Mutaz jumped into the record books as one of Qatar’s most successful athletes of all time. Winning this medal, in that place, was quite simply the biggest achievement of his career... ‘It means a lot to me, I’m so happy to win at home, said Mutaz

22

fact magazine

after his victory. I really wanted to do it for all the people who came to encourage me. I wasn’t 100% ready, but it was my compatriots who allowed me to enhance my performances. I really felt the energy of the crowd. Thanks to all this, I forgot everything, my injury, my previous competitions. I didn’t think about tactics or technique, I just had to go for it, to survive. I do what I love the most, the best way I can.’ Mutaz wasn’t the only member of the Richard Mille family to stand on the podium. After her record- breaking gold-winning series from Rio to Berlin, via London, the great champion, Nafi Thiam, took silver in the heptathlon. ‘I’m delighted, I have put in lots of effort all year. I did my utmost, and my silver has the taste of all the sacrifices, the work and problems (notably elbow issues in the javelin throw) of a difficult year, and I couldn’t be prouder!’ Thanks to their performances, these champions place themselves at the top of world athletics for the greatest pride of the brand, which renews their friendship and trust. ✤

The Topeka School By Ben Lerner

R&B/SOUL

Love and Compromise By Mahalia

Coming at us with a gorgeous blend of intoxicating vocals and relatable lyrics, Mahalia’s latest offering is enough to cement her position as more than an upand-coming star in the mainstream music world. Technically her second album, Love and Compromise is being pushed as her debut record – and we are here for it. Having created her own unique brand of soulful R&B, the singer has been slaying us with her mermerising sound and she’s just getting started. Bringing her signature R&B sound to the fore, Square 1 humorously talks about going back into a relationship that didn’t work out the first time. Beautifully fusing gospel-backing vocals with neo-soul piano riffs, the addictive tune is enough to drive your heartbreak away. Driven by heartbreak, the British songstress’ inspiring soundtrack is the gift we never knew we needed. What You Did featuring Ella Mai brings the two artists together to create an excellent masterpiece. A remarkable demonstration of their impressive voices, the singers tackle a cheating ex over ‘90’s instrumentals without overpowering each other. With incredibly honest lyrics and dazzling yet casual vibes shining through, Love and Compromise is an absolute winner. The breezy R&B and soulinfused album is officially our fall soundtrack! 44

DANCE/ ELECTRONIC

Magdalene

By FKA Twigs

Blessing us with another hit soundtrack, FKA Twigs’ Magdalene reintroduces the singer into the musical realm like never before. Making her comeback after a four-year hiatus, the album is borne out of a time of solitude in the singer’s life. A song about going back home, Home With You is a track straight from the singer’s heart. The third single from her latest album, the alternating beat-heavy track features breathtaking piano balladry as she breaks free and embraces change. A melodious catalogue of all the lovers the singer has ever had, and all the lovers she’ll ever have, the album is delicate while also being beautifully defiant and strong. Cellophane a raw and vulnerable declaration of her deepest emotions is unlike anything we have ever heard from the artist. Toning down on her usual twitchy technical production to reveal her hyponotising voice, the song is brimming with complicated feelings and true emotions. Needless to say, FKA Twigs’ dramatic comeback has been a total triumph.

A senior at Topeka High School, Adam Gordon is a renowned debater and orator, expected to win a national championship before he heads to college, all while trying to pass off as a “real man” and the cool kid at school. His mother, Jane, is a famous feminist author, and his father, Jonathan, is a renowned expert at getting “lost boys” to open up. As Jane and Jonathan struggle with the challenge of raising a good son surrounded by a culture of toxic masculinity, the story beautifully shifts perspective and time periods to produce a truly enthralling narrative.

MAKE IT POP The digital art movement has seen quite the evolution in the past decade and with the rise of social media, more talented individuals have a platform to share their work with the world. Gulf-based Sara Rajab, who goes by the memorable handle @popcorn.nose.art on Instagram, is one such artist utilising modern-day technology to hone and share her skills. Here, she talks to FACT’s Shabana Adam about her artistic style and growing a grassroots following…

I

n second grade, Sara Rajab drew a policeman for a homework project and her mother’s proud reaction sparked an artistic journey that has turned from a cool hobby into a bona fide side hustle. Creating digital art under the pseudonym @popcorn.nose.art (Sara’s best friend has always compared her nose to a perfect popcorn shape, hence the Instagram handle), the 24-year-old stumbled upon turning her drawings into life-like animations after she graduated. “I started to draw in my free time,” Sara recalls. “Then one of my friends told me to try digital art. After that day, I was amazed to learn how I could turn a simple sketch into a fascinating form of digital art just with one touch, anywhere and anytime I felt like it.” Digital Art encompasses a wide-range of work. In Sara’s case, her images are digitally-created reproductions of artworks that already exist in another form – she sketches in a book and translates these drawings onto the Stylus app. Sometimes, she draws directly onto the app, in pursuit of trying new things. You only need to take one look at Sara’s Instagram page to see the impact her artwork has made. Portraits of real people and pop culture characters appear in vibrant digital form, praised through hundreds of likes and comments. Everything from the lines to the vivid colours is in keeping with the Pop Art movement which utilises the imagery and techniques of consumerism and popular culture. Pop art was originally developed in the late 1950s as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism and flourished in the sixties and early seventies. Pop Art favoured figural imagery and 50

fact magazine

the reproduction of everyday objects, such as Campbell Soup cans, comic strips and advertisements. The movement eliminated distinctions between "good" and "bad" taste and between fine art and commercial art techniques. Sara takes requests from friends and followers as well as drawing some of her favourite celebrity icons such as Frank Ocean, Donald Glover, Jaden Smith and, more recent drawings depicting the late Hollywood actor Luke Perry as well as her take on the blockbuster hit, Joker. Sara is gripped by the artistic process. She loves to learn new techniques and change up her style when the drawing permits. “I make different art for everyone,” she explains. “Some people request cartoony, and some want super-hero style, it depends on each individual.” For the moment, Sara’s tools are simple; she uses her iPhone 7 and various apps including Stylus and, more recently, Procreate Pocket to create digital art. She hopes to upgrade this to an iPad and iPen soon. Unlike a traditional canvas and watercolour paintings, digital pieces carry their own flair and finesse. However, the practice of producing the art remains the same. For Sara, pondering on a finished artwork is part of her routine. “I know I’m almost done with my piece when I add the small details that make my art come to life, like dots or stars, or freckles” she tells us. “Sometimes, after I finish a piece, I leave it to sit for an hour or more, just to look back at it and make sure it is exactly how I want it to be.” There is no rush when it comes to digital art. Much like its conventional counterparts, Sara’s work is, simply, an outcome of modern-day creativity and passion. “The vision of the final piece keeps me consistent till the end,” Sara says. “What inspires my work is the people I share my art with. They give me really good feedback and it makes me want to do more.” Helping to dispel the idea that digital art is something of a casual pastime, and not to be taken seriously, Sara’s work is the perfect example of moving with the times.

• ARTS SPOTLIGHT “I have studied a little bit about what each colour can make you feel,” Sara shares. “So, I like to post art with these specific colors to grab people’s attention. Other times, I just pick a colour according to how I feel or what I think will look better with the main art piece.” Sara is forever grateful to the online world and the wider community in of the Gulf for the love and support she has received so far – a testament to the region and its people for their encouragement and acceptance of all creative practices. “Most artists that I know are really supportive with my art and I can ask them anything in terms of getting advice,” she smiles. “The only challenge really is me challenging myself to improve and be better.” With almost 4k followers on Instagram, Sara’s talent is proof that artistic boundaries are nonexistent in today’s social media landscape. Being able to share her art with such a wide audience online has been a blessing in disguise for Sara. “Social media has really helped me grow as an artist,” she says. “All the comments have been positive and I also get random messages from people telling me they like my work. Also, a lot of people share my art on their stories which has really helped me to grow my followers and also helped me to make some money from my skills,” she adds.

In fact, Sara’s advice for standing out in a market that is so saturated with talent is to find your own style. “Keep practicing and think about what your art would be according to your personality or if it was the other way around would you consider buying art from yourself,” Sara advices. “Also, don’t be afraid to try new things. Your art doesn’t have to look like other people’s art, draw what you want, and that’s what will make you a unique artist.” Sara’s artworks are also very family friendly, so people of all ages can visit her account on Instagram and request what they would like. Her future plans include designing stickers and t-shirts with her artwork, showing a penchant for entrepreneurial chase with what could well and truly be a fully-fledged merch line. And that is something we can definitely get behind! ✤ 54

ALPHA CITY: THESSALONIKI THESSALONIKI CANNOT BE DESCRIBED IN ONE WORD OR ONE SENTENCE. IT IS THE KIND OF PLACE THAT WOULD TAKE AT LEAST AN EVENING TO EXPLAIN DUE TO ITS COMPLEXITY AND YET SIMPLICITY. IT IS THE MOST MAGNIFICENTLY MEMORABLE MAINLAND DESTINATION IN GREECE, ACCORDING TO HELEN HOUGHTON…

I

t is fair to say that as far as travel and dining experiences go, I am no stranger to disappointment and discovering that much hyped happening, hotspots are actually just limp and lukewarm. The sprawling Metropolis’ of Paris, New York and London are famed for their landmarks, cultural diversity, unique cuisine and charm. However, for me there is a sense of soullessness in these cities, a lack of warmth and feeling of belonging, due largely to the daunting scale of these cities. The need to plan every moment in order to ‘make the most’ of your precious time there which removes the opportunity for anything impromptu or spontaneous. There is no scope for meandering or moseying. When friends would ask ‘Which is your favourite city?’ I would reply with a shrug. Until now… The wealth of stories which form the heart of this mesmerising city originate from the periods when the Romans and Ottomans, and, of course, the Greeks inhabited the city and most importantly accessed and controlled the vast Port. Thessaloniki is surprisingly accessible from most airports in the UK and around Europe as it is the gateway to the beautiful beaches of Halkidiki, Mount Olympus and Athos, and to the south Meteora. These are undeniably arresting tourist traps, although if you venture into Thessaloniki, en-route you may never make it to your intended destination. The city is intoxicating and has an addictive warmth and hospitality. It has an abundance of history, statuesque landmarks and an enviable location offering both sea and mountain views as you stroll along the expansive promenade. The sparkling waters of the Thermaic Gulf lap against the fringes of the city and provide the perfect backdrop for many of the enticing eateries and bars. Whether you choose to take coffee, which is more about a

meeting of minds and opinions than refreshment or sip Tsipouro as the sun goes down you will find yourself spoilt for choice. Venture deeper into the heart of the city to the to the mesmerising Kapani Market where fresh produce and spices tantalise your senses. In its past life the area was a flour market bordering the eclectic Aristotle Square. The square proudly bears the name of one of the region’s most famous residents. ‘The soul never thinks without a picture’ Aristotle Kapani is without a doubt the image which our souls would summon when thinking about a bustling market brimming with the freshest peaches, figs, olives and the finest fish the Mediterranean has to offer. Close by is the Turkish Hammam which, once again, oozes history from its pores and around which locals while away hours in coffee houses or pick up delectable treats in the plethora of delicatessens and shops. Presiding resplendently above the more modern districts of the city is Ladadika which was spared by the fire of 1917 which destroyed much of the city. It had been a hub for merchants but is now one of the few areas where the city walls remain intact and one of the most unique and upmarket areas for locals to reside. The cooler climes, winding tiered streets, and pastel, painted properties are a stark contrast to the modern city and constitute another fascinating chapter. taxing activity you will encounter, simply due to the volume of truly fabulous fayre. Thessaloniki Tourism Organisation proudly herald the city as Greece’s Culinary Capital, supporting a series of events and activities which encourage gastronomic tourism. The guided food tour of the city highlights its roots and origins in order for participants to better understand the nature of the cuisine. Of course, it would be rude not to indulge oneself as you traverse a series of local specialties and rub shoulders with market traders and stylish Thessalonians as you progress from one delicious spot to the next. ‘Quality is not an act; it is a habit’ Aristotle The food scene is a habit which should be encouraged in everyone that visits simply because restaurateurs and producers have embraced the ethos of unwavering consistency and quality. The stretch of promenade from the Port area to the White Tower is so captivating that it stole my heart. The cruise boats which pass by loaded with visitors and locals alike, the chatter and aromas which emanate from the pavement bars and restaurants and finally the piece de resistance …… The White Tower. It used to unite the Western and Seaside walls of the city but is now one of the most beautiful and iconic images the city has to offer. The city has such a strong sense of identity and the inhabitants possess an innate sense of pride in their surroundings. There are so many places which claim to be a ‘melting pot’ of cultures, tastes and minds yet I think there is no finer one than Thessaloniki. The wealth of History, migration and trade has generated an exclusive outlook, varied cuisine and the warmest welcome you could ever hope to receive. ✤

T

he Volvo brand has developed a global reputation for being one of the safest and most comfortable automobile brands on the planet. This is due to their unwavering dedication to constantly improving aspects of their vehicles with each and every new offering. Producing cars since 1927, this Swedish born manufacturer has won more awards for safety and performance than most others could dream of. In fact, the Volvo XC90 is the most awarded luxury SUV of the century. When the terrific team at Motorcity invited us to test drive the 2019, new and improved Volvo XC90 T6, we jumped at the opportunity, knowing we were in for a treat. Our first impression of the XC90 was that it’s easy to see why it’s the company’s top-of-the-line, flagship motor vehicle. This refreshed model offers subtle upgrades to the original exterior design. Its shapely body comprises of clean lines that flow from one end of the vehicle to the other. The bold and aggressive shape of the frontend is led by the redesigned grille and Volvo Iron Mark, along with the iconic “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlight design. The rear exhibits an integrated spoiler, signature taillights and chrome surround exhaust tips, whilst new wheels add to the vehicle’s solid looking stance. Upon commencing our interior inspection, the ample space on offer was the first feature to capture our attention. This threerow, seven-seater SUV is Volvo’s largest and there is plenty of head, hip, leg and head room for all occupants, in each row. The boot offers a sizeable area for transporting goods that is increased substantially when the back row of seats is laid flat. The layout upfront provides a calm and balanced environment as would be expected of Scandinavian design. A harmonious blend of topquality materials including wood, crystal and metal give the cabin area a feel of sophisticated modern luxury. The XC90 houses the Volvo connectivity and infotainment system called Sensus that delivers an intuitive, 9-inch, highly responsive touch screen interface that combines car functions, navigation, connected services and in-car entertainment applications including Spotify and Pandora. This user-friendly system, with its portrait-orientated touch screen, allows for fast and easy access to a host of functions and features. Smartphone integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is also available. All-in-all we found every aspect of the interior to be well designed, functional and attractive to the eye. Out on the roads, this revamped model continued to impress. The 2019 XC90 is powered by a 2.0 litre, 16-valve, supercharged and turbocharged, in-line, four-cylinder T6 AWD engine, complete with an integrated (SFI) ignition control system. This setup produces 310 horsepower at 5,700 rpm whilst developing 295-pound feet of torque from 2,200 to 4,500 rpm. This engine is partnered with an eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission that provides motive energy to all four wheels. This all translates to a high-performance motor vehicle with a decent turn of speed. With a great braking system, decent suspension and plenty of grip on the corners, the kilometres rolled quietly by as we lapped up the experience of this quiet, and comfortable cocoon. Volvo still lead the field as far as safety features are concerned and have the vision that no one will be killed or seriously injured in a 64

new Volvo Car by 2020. This is a bold goal indeed, however the safety package found in the XC90 makes this car one of the safest ever constructed. All of the brand’s models house Volvo’s City Safety technology that combines automatic braking functionality and collision avoidance systems to cover a range of potential accident scenarios. City Safety is the only system on the market that detects pedestrians, cyclists as well as large animals. Worldfirst safety technologies belonging to Volvo include a run-off road protection package and an auto brake at intersection capability. Further safety properties include the Second-Generation Pilot Assist, Queue Assist, as well as an array of Park Assist features. Anyone entering one of these vehicles can do so confident in the fact that they are travelling in one of the most carefully designed motor vehicles in the world. We highly recommend this luxury SUV to any and all looking for a functional, comfortable and above all safe new vehicle. ✤

THE SPANISH DELIGHT Discovering her love for Spain all over again, FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan couldn’t wait to try the new menu at The Cellar, Oryx Rotana. Dreaming of tapas and all good things, she went to lunch at one of the best dining spots in Doha…

A

n underrated hotel in my opinion, I was absolutely delighted to hear about the new menu launch at The Cellar in Oryx Rotana. The property boasts a few of my most favourite restaurants in town and I have never been disappointed with the quality of their food. So, with high expectations comes great responsibility and I conveyed that immediately to the chef. The Cellar was even more beautiful than I remembered from a few years ago. The spacious restaurant has a lovely view of the changing Doha weather with big windows that are covered with chicks, completely in sync with The Cellar vibes. I took a seat next to the window and witnessed the first wind of fall sweep Doha away whilst waiting for my appetisers. Starting the Spanish extravaganza, my appetisers showed the variety that comes at this food joint. From Salpicon de Mariscos, Patatas Al Horno Con Huevo Y Cebolla to the magnificent Cangrejo Al Horno, I was already roped in for the hour. Personally, Cangrejo Al Horno, which is oven baked crab meat, stood out due to the different flavours of the dish. The Patatas Al Horno was a close second because you can never go wrong with baked potatoes in my opinion! As soon as the Estofado De Rabo De Toro was served, I was instantly taken back to sunny Barcelona, sitting in a café at La Rambla, devouring the Oxtail stew that came in luscious tomato sauce, adding richness to the dish. I couldn’t believe I had found my own little Barca in the heart of Doha. As for the Bacalao A La Vizcaina, it couldn’t have been better than this. The garnishing, the taste and the absolute joy that followed after this – heavenly! Since I had requested the chef to surprise me with his own favourites, I could tell that the menu was carefully planned for a delightful evening for me. It is one thing to have a liking for a certain dish but, I always want to see what the chef considers his favourite and this was exactly the new thing I was looking for. Conversation flows easily in the ambience of the restaurant and where I was waiting for the good ol’ churros to come in with the dripping chocolate sauce, the Chef surprised me by sending Tarta De Santiago, a Galician almond cake decorated with raspberry sorbet. I forgot all about my commitments after as I sat and took in every single bite of this glorious dessert. We cannot continue this conversation without mentioning the Quesada Pasiega, the milk cheese pudding which was amplified with caramel sauce – soft like butter and a treat from the dessert kings! 78

LEVANTINE CHARM Orient Pearl is a gem on the Corniche. Astonishingly, FACT’s Craig Ferriman only discovered it in the past few weeks. He takes a seat to make up for lost time, discovering a venue that is truly a unique place to relax and socialize… fact magazine

I

always knew where Orient Pearl was but not exactly what is was. If you find yourself driving along the Corniche in the evening, you’ve probably noticed a stunning and colourful fountain with plumes of water shooting out in a majestic display next to the new National Museum. Well, that is the rather welcoming entrance you get at Orient Pearl. It’s emblematic of the time you’ll spend there; warm, rich and vibrant. They seem to fancy their water features because we sat down in the centre of the restaurant next to a sheet of glass with cascading water that created a calming ambience. The entrance to the place was plush and made me think I was entering a fivestar hotel feeling momentarily but it was quickly apparent that anyone is welcome and as I turned into the large expanse of the dining area, it was a beautifully designed yet cosy and comfortable setting. This is a Lebanese outlet where the food is spectacular. It got off to a good start with a range of pleasant appetisers; a tangy tabbouleh which was fresh as anything as were the yalangi vine leaves and the fattoush salad. The hummous was superb and as good as you’d enjoy in Beirut. Their fatayer was a little different to ones I’ve previously tried in other places because they were open and flat rather than a closed pastry. I actually prefer it this way because it means less pastry and more flavor and filling, be it cheese, spinach or meat. A stand-out dish for us was the kibbeh labaniyeh which is yoghurt and white rice. That was particularly delicious and one I would order time and again. Our mixed grill was complemented by an interesting rice of wheat, tomatoes and special oil. It was obvious the meat was of the highest quality but I was delighted to discover that the produce is all sourced locally at Baladna Farm here in Qatar. Juices are made fresh in house. I had a very natural orange juice with the oranges hand squeezed on the premises. A plentiful menu of shisha is also available. It’s worth saying something about the service. I’ve lost count of the number of times lately that service has been a bit mediocre in places. You pay a lot and the food is good, but the service is inattentive or just lacks a smile. Here at Orient Pearl, the owners have taken enormous pride in the entire experience and personally trained their waiters to very high standards. From crisply laundered uniforms that leave them looking sharp and elegant, to the warmth of their smile and the attention to detail, swift service and delicate presentation, they live up to a high standard and really do make you feel like everything is being taken care of.

SPANISH TANGO OF FLAVOURS

El Faro’s grand opening with Chef Javier Aranda at Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl-Doha was a dining affair for the books. FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan couldn’t wait to try this restaurant from the renowned 2 Michelin Star chef.

fact magazine

85

• DINING FOCUS

I

was recently lucky enough to meet Chef Javier Aranda at the official launch of El Faro at Marsa Malaz Kempinski and I couldn’t help but admire his passion for cuisine - something that he speaks of inheriting from his grandfather, so I couldn’t wait to taste some authentic Spanish food. So, during the middle of the week, I headed to El Faro to see the magic created by the Michelin Star chef. A dimly lit room welcomed me with a bar in the middle of the restaurant with the seating arrangement on the further end of the eatery. You could even dine al-fresco but considering the love-hate relationship between my hair and the weather, I took a seat indoors, on the comfortable light brown leather chairs. The wall behind me was decorated with graffiti, projecting a very trendy flair to the look of the place. A marble lamp lit the table and my menu had a reading light on it too! The romantic atmosphere gives way to the cuisine that is served next. The starters were a pleasant way to be introduced with the cuisine. The good old croquetas were heavenly, then again, which cheese item isn’t? I was warned before I had the Bocadillo de calamar a la inversa - a calamari sandwich with a twist - to stay tuned for trying one of the most successful experiments out of the kitchen. The deliciously crusty sandwich literally came in a twist; with flavourful calamari inside the sandwich, and crispy calamari on the outside as well, this little treat was absolutely divine! Personally, the Chipirones rellenos en su tinta took me by surprise. The studded baby squid with ink over rice was simply piquant! The ink had a twist of its own to the dish and it made the entire plate a whole. The delectable Gofre Caprese was simply a trick for all since it looked like it was a dessert served as starters. As happy as that made me, I loved how the chef had experimented with the everyday dish – a waffle topped with mozzarella cheese, giving it the illusion of whipped cream – a blissful combo that you never knew you wanted. I’m going to be honest with you – I don’t necessarily rejoice every time that I hear that I am being served octopus, but, since I had asked the team to surprise me with 86

fact magazine

their best, I couldn’t really complain! The pulpo a nuestra manera came as a grilled octopus that’s taste was enhanced with the sweet potato sauce served with it. The crispy, grilled skin of the octopus was a complete game changer and I recommend it to all those who are in love with seafood. I even requested the sharing platter and got served with the Carrillera de ternera con cogollos de lechuga y mojo. Yes, that is the name of the dish but, don’t worry about it when you get to the restaurant. All the dishes, aptly named in Spanish, have descriptions under them in English so you do not need to worry about not understanding what you’re ordering. The Carrillera, a ten-hour slow cooked dish of beef cheeks was so tender it was like biting into a tasty cloud of perfection. The beef came glazed with the BBQ sauce and served with mojo

sauce – a grouping meant to win awards. The tanginess of the mojo sauce elevated the flavour of the meat further and the entire experience was simply sublime. A meal really isn’t complete until you’re served dessert and the concept of the regular Crème Brulee was slightly adjusted for dinner requirements at El Faro, Crema Catalana aireda came with aired Catalonian cream with caramelized sugar and toffee crunch. The aired cream made it a very light dessert, making me have more than I normally would because it did not feel heavy at all. For the final crescendo, we relied on the good old churros with spiced chocolate. Yep, spiced chocolate! It was just the right amount of flavour to complement the churros, which weren’t as sweet as I expected, and I simply devoured this combination.

DINING FOCUS •

With the expert staff that made sure I wouldn’t have to wait long between my courses and the splendid bartender who kept my glass full is just a couple of the plus points of the restaurant. The authentic food and the team who trained with Chef Javier gave me the Spanish twist that I came looking for. If you’re looking for a night where you get to have some quiet time in a romantically lit restaurant that won’t but a dent in your wallet, you should certainly give El Faro a try. ✤

• SPA & WELLNESS

L

ocated right behind Landmark Mall, Chic & Posh is exactly what comes to mind when you hear the salon’s name. From the moment that I entered the place, a beautiful golden stencil of the logo welcomed me with a setting that could only be found in books. A pink wall mural replicated the entire look of the salon and it set the tone for the rest of the décor. I couldn’t believe that a small villa could hold these many services. From eyebrow and eyelashes, to nails and hair, hammam and massage, your dream salon is right here! I had chosen to get their highly recommended 3D eyelashes, a facial and a massage; something that I was very eager to try out. I prepped for the Candle Massage, a new experience that I wanted to test out. A shea butter candle was used where melted wax was the potion of choice and used as an oil that was lathered on my body. This new experience was a ride of its own and after a few oohs and aahs, I finally settled in the warm candle wax. The music, the room and the soothing hands of my therapist almost put me to sleep, relaxing me for the entire day. Once done, I went to the facial room and saw that they were using Biologique Recherche so I knew that my sensitive skin was not going to take the hit. However, the product was not the highlight of the next hour, Maricar was. She examined my skin and told me the major three problems included pigmentation, and a mix of oily and dry skin. A special serum was mixed for my face and honestly, the result was glowing, even skin. I owe you a special thank you Maricar! Later, I got introduced to Meriam, their 3D eyelash expert who simply impressed me within the first 15 minutes. She and I had a detailed conversation about her eight-year long experience and how she will help me with my issues of getting eyelashes. I told her that I LOVED the extra drama look but couldn’t help and get rid of the lashes within 10 days since the extensions tend to clamp together and the glue becomes really uncomfortable. She assured me that she would be looking into all of these factors and I decided to trust her. Before she started the process, she asked me if I wanted a C or a D curve which had me really confused. She informed me that the curve decided the curl of the lashes and I could be as dramatic as D or a little subtle with the C. Well, drama and I have a long relationship so I went for the D. However, Meriam told me that she would be using both C and D level curves to compliment my natural lashes. I expected to wait for a good two boring hours for the process but the music, Meriam’s conversation and expert, swift movements made this entire experience all the more fun. During this time, she also told me that she was using lashes seven to 11. Now that’s some beauty jargon I have never heard and really appreciated! After 45 minutes, I got to see the difference between my eyes; one with the extensions and the other natural one. If you haven’t tried lashes before, you definitely need to give it a try because your entire face gets a lift and you look fly all the time! I was exceptionally happy with the result because I didn’t even feel like there was anything extra on my eyes. Apparently, these glamorous beauties are supposed to last two months! 92

I was about to walk out of the eyelash room when I got introduced to Pinky who advised me to try the 3D eyebrows another day. Since I got the facial the same day, she couldn’t do the procedure and I excused myself because of the tight schedule I had. However, ten minutes into a conversation with her, I booked myself another visit to the salon. The second day that I went there, Pinky explained how she was going to use my natural eyebrows to give a fuller look by using serums and eyebrow dye. She promised me that no machine or tattoo was going to be used for this. Her movements were so light I think I got to get a quick nap in between and woke up with a full-blown classy look. I cannot tell you the difference to my face especially because of the 3D eyelashes and eyebrows. I got to the hair dressing department and settled for a quick blow dry for an event later and they made sure that my volume stayed. A curling iron and a blow dryer were my best friends for the day and I simply walked out of Chic & Posh Beauty Lounge, ready for my events and feeling glamorous by applying very light makeup – that is the beauty of the extensions! The amount of knowledge and step-by-step instructions by the staff is definitely what makes the salon stand out for me. From the minute you enter the main gate, the setup, the staff and the services that follow give you a wholesome experience which comes highly recommended from my side. ✤

I

am fresh out of N.Bar right now and trust me, I don’t want to sit at home at the moment. With the waves that I’ve got going on, my hair and I deserve a night out. Yep, you heard it right: N.Bar and HAIR. True to its name and reputation, N.Bar was an exclusive nail brand which gave you one hundred and one options to keep those cuticles on point. Until they decided they had more to offer. The Gate Mall branch of N.Bar has hair services as well and where one might get a bit confused, I’m here to tell you what a fabulous day I’ve had. I absolutely love the quirky wall paintings that sync in with the salon and the fact that there is literally a coffee bar in this branch - well you know where you’ll find me every time, I need a caffeine awakening. With various stations for manicures, pedicures and massage, you’d be pleasantly surprised to slide open the doors for the hair station. When I heard about these services, I didn’t know what to expect because N.Bar has truly made its mark being one of the best nail care salons around. As soon as I ordered my dose of caffeine, which is usually needed in the middle of the day, I was introduced to my stylist. After a 15 minutes conversation and analysis of my hair, I was informed that I will be trying the Kerastase Fusio Dose treatment. The treatment basically repairs any damaged hair and, in my case, the culprit was coloured hair with dry ends. Boosters are added to the treatment to make sure that the effect is long lasting, and after I told my stylist that my hair 96

trending and it just seems like the fashion gurus somewhere heard my heart’s desire and gave the idea of giving me the exact style that was on the runway. #RunwayGoals officially achieved! Contrary to popular belief that all curly haired women want straight hair, I just want to know how to tame mine and be able to manage this barnet. The entire process was a learning lesson for me and I didn’t mind a bit when a combination of sprays, which included the Anti-Frizz, design fix, and modelling spray were used to give my waves a longer lasting effect. Not just that but I received tips on how to make the blow dry last for a further couple of days, considering my scalp situation, and the trick to keep them wavy throughout the night. One thing is for sure, N.Bar is on top of that hair affair. If a style gets me compliments from the husband like ‘it’s the best I’ve seen on you’, then you better believe it must be amazeballs. The gate mall branch certainly has an edge with these services and I’m definitely booking myself a number of treatments in the coming months, because after all, who wouldn’t want to achieve perfection? ✤

tends to fall flat after blow dries, she made sure she gave me the right mix. I know that the digital age has kept us all glued to our phones but trust me, the ideal time to get the best information from the experts is when you’re waiting for the next step. After the treatment was applied, we let it work its magic for a good 10 minutes during which I received all the tips that I could possibly take in. Being a curly haired woman in a weather like Doha’s comes with its frizzy hair problems and oily scalp ailments. I was advised different ways that I could blow dry in order to achieve natural volume. From hair to our gym routines, I had the best company that a girl could ask for which is reflective of the kind rapport you’ll find throughout N.Bar’s services. I know people normally don’t talk in salons and go there to relax, but for me, this is always a part of the service. And, you will never find me sitting silently for too long! I took recommendations on my hair colouring as well, something I will definitely be trying the next time, and discussed the pros and cons of bleaching for lighter hair. I got an insider tip to stay out on the beach more to have the ‘natural’ hair lightening method for a few months before dying them a lighter colour. See, GOLD conversations! Once the treatment was washed out, my styling furor began. I was asked if I wanted waves and my delightful squeals spoke louder than words. I recently came across videos from the Fashion Week backstage teams where wavy hair had been

ELEGANCE AT A GALLOP The latest creation by Parfums de Marly has announced its pedigree from the outset. FOUNDED IN 2009 BY Julien Sprecher, whose love of perfumes was passed down from his father, Parfums de Marly, a highend perfumery brand, conjures up a dreamlike state with its “signature” fragrances, a strong position and concepts that are short, striking, direct and clear, in which Julien Sprecher’s favourite ingredients can be found, like famous quotations. Its world: the 18th century, the splendour of a golden age of perfumery, where the court of the French King, known by the other European monarchies as “the perfumed court”, and the luxury of the fragrances created in Grasse, world perfume capital, competed with the hieratic elegance of race horses. Drawing its inspiration from this flamboyant period, Parfums de Marly revives and updates this tradition of exceptional perfumery under the creative control of experts to reflect modernity with a clear concept of aesthetics. Its name resonates: Kalan. Its attire gleams an ardent red. Its luxury is captivating. The one who can tame it will be free. A lover of rare materials, an enthusiast of exhilaration. A contemporary man, from another time. In him, contradiction becomes a luxury, his privilege. The perfume of this 21st century aesthete fluctuates between shadow and light. It does not conform to current trends either. It resides on the margins of the olfactory families, taking the best from each. A little fern, virile and highly sophisticated. “For Parfums de Marly, Kalan represents a homecoming, it 98
