Experience Doha

A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went. - Dave Ramsey

H

ello again, dear world! Fresh from closing the magazine for you all, I was hooked to my TV all day as I waited for all the action from the Emmy Awards 2019. Amazing to see GoT take it home (as expected) and the red carpet looks just had me drooling. My Netflix life has been a bit slow as I recently discovered Apple TV and the 90’s vibe of renting movies just became a thing for me - better late than never, I guess! As much as I am enjoying this newly found glued-to-the-TV life, I am dying to get the outdoor life started again. I love how we are already booked for various outdoor events in October and that autumn seems to be creeping in at a leisurely pace. Still, everything seems to be right in place. Well, this month’s issue should be right up your street if you’ve been feeling the summer pinch. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to spend lavishly to enjoy some of the greatest aspects about life in the Qatari capital. In fact, turn to p25 where we’re rounding up some of our favourite arts, culture, and hospitality picks that you can discover for next to nothing. Easy on the pockets is our min-guide to cheap eats as well as activities for the whole family to enjoy. We were taken by storm by the season picking up again and how everyone is back in town, jumping in at the deep end to get the last quarter of 2019 on the go! We loved visiting the new Cigar Lounge, El Cedro, at Sharq Village & Spa, which is something very different in Doha for those who appreciate the finer things in life (p81). Our mini staycation at JW Marriott Marquis City Centre was the quick break we needed as Shanghai Club will always be my most favourite place to unwind and savour delicious nibbles (p36). Since we’re on the lookout for something to do every Thursday, the Chanchai’s Table at City Centre Rotana was a good way for us to get stuck into some delicious food over some fabulous company (p73). As for one of the weekend’s most exciting places to be - and the return of the brunch season we headed to check out the island life once again at Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara (p77). To top that off, there’s dining deals galore with all the latest news in food, arts, culture and travel. We are absolutely delighted that you’re all back in town and we will hopefully bump into you as we dine and dance through the coming month. May we all dine in style till then!☺

hen I got the chance to check out JW Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha, I wasn’t going to say no. I had recently had one of the best Chinese gastronomical experiences at the Shanghai Club brunch, which resulted in one of the most romantic sunsets that I have experienced so, naturally, curiosity got the best of this deal and I packed my bag for a quick staycation. The busy roads of Doha have kept this property hidden in the bustle of City Centre. The journey of JW starts right at the door as the valet helps and ushers you to the reception, taking your luggage and greeting you with the warmest of wishes. After a swift check in and confirmations for all my reservations, I went upstairs and swiped to experience the deluxe journey that was booked for the night. A comfortable, huge room, overlooking the buildings in West Bay welcomed me with a washed-gold and white theme. Since I had checked in late, the hotel had accommodated all my booking requirements accordingly and I got dressed to check out my new favourite Shanghai Club at night. The breathtaking view at the restaurant welcomed me as I saw the entire city sparkle with diamond-like stars. Watching the skyline from this angle was a treat of its own and the food at the restaurant exceeded expectations. If I held fact magazine

high regards for Chef Ooi Kar Kim, after the meal that we were served, my partner hugged him because this experience truly was one of a kind. From the newly-introduced duck handbag, which came in crust shaped like an actual handbag and glazed with honey and sesame, to the chilli lobster dumpling, and the slow-cooked, nectarous beef short ribs seasoned to perfection, the unique salt bowl zesty chicken, and the star of the night, the grouper with tantalising Sichuan sauce; the night was an absolute delight. Since it was a Thursday night, the music from the bar just added to the flavour of the evening. The hotel is in the ideal location, making all the tourist spots within 10 minutes away. With a gym and swimming pool to keep you on your

toes and not excuse yourself for a day with the fitness routine, you’re bound to find yourself with something to do at all times. I booked myself a one-hour massage at the Quan Spa and loved the fact that everything was intertwined; from their philosophy to their music and décor. Taking inspiration from ‘spring water’, the music and ambience of the entire spa are in harmony. The masseuse takes you to your treatment room where you are given four choices of oils to choose from after which, the next hour was nothing short of bliss. For me, this was an ideal start to a Friday. I got fresh with the massage, headed to the brunch at Sridan and enjoyed it with my entire family. The tender malai boti, vegetable

sushi and their virgin margarita in shot glasses was everything that I needed to get the weekend vibes in full swing. The dessert options kept me and my daughter busy through most of the brunch and more than one person experienced the sugar high that particular day (not saying who!). All in all, JW Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha is the way to go for anyone visiting Doha or wanting to have a staycation right in the middle of the city. Facilities are top-notch and every member of the family is catered to. ✤

n inspiration for many Qatari youths, a banking executive leader and high-altitude climber Fahad Badar is on a mission to summit the highest mountain on each of the world’s seven continents. Fahad is pleased to announce one of the ultimate adventures on earth to Antarctica to ski the last degree expedition and climb Mount Vinson. Mount Vinson is the most remote of the Seven Summits, located 1000 kilometres from the South Pole at 4897metres high. Vinson’s summit will feel 1000 meters higher than it actually is because of the thinning of the earth’s atmosphere near the poles. Records show approximately 1200 people have summited Mount Vinson since 1966. Vinson will be Fahad’s fourth of the Seven Summits, and he will be leaving to Antarctica on National Day, December 18th to make his journey to the centre of the South Pole by the end of December, with a projected summit date during the first week of January 2020. His success on the mountains has been exceptional, in May this year Fahad

made history by becoming the first Arab male to double summit both Mount Everest and Lhotse in a single expedition. He is one of just over 30 people in the world to have succeeded this massive accomplishment. His achievements were commended by H.E. Salah Bin Ghanim Al Ali, Minister of Culture and Sports who awarded him with a certificate of achievement. Then in August, he also achieved an incredible feat by scaling two more mountains – Mont Blanc and Matterhorn in the Alps. He is one of only a few Qataris who is pursuing his passion for climbing, which has led him to push himself both physically and mentally further each time. On this astounding achievement, Fahad Badar said: “It has been a pride and privilege to fly the Qatari flag on the highest peaks of the world. For me failure is not an option and I am excited for this next expedition to raise the Qatari flag high at Antarctica and inspire many others to follow suit. I want to thank the team at Aspire that have been assisting with my training, the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Olympic Committee for their continued support of my achievements.” ✤ fact magazine

PALATIAL PORTUGAL

Conjuring up images of fresh seafood, custard tarts and long stretches of sandy beaches dotted with secluded coves, Portugal is a travel gem that FACT’s David Tapley visited this summer. isbon, known for its authenticity and mix of old customs and ancient history is remarkably safe, easy to navigate and where the temperature rarely drops below 15°C. The Portuguese capital is not only aesthetically beautiful but benefits from the majority of tourist attractions and points of interest being concentrated in a relatively compact area within the heart of the city. Follow the route of the yellow no. 28 tram into historic Alfama, a district wedged between the Sao Jorge Castle and the Tejo river and you’ll discover the one of the oldest neighbourhoods. Characterised by winding passageways that lead to unsigned local tascas, century-old churches and Roman ruins, Alfama is the kind of place that is best explored on foot but be prepared to get lost in the labyrinth of streets, but fear not, it’s all part of the fun. Beneath Alfama lies the Avenida Liberdade, the place to see and be seen in Lisbon and home to the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, a 44

five-star property boasting a timeless elegance that has been offering a unique style of Portuguese hospitality for over 80 years. The 1.5km thoroughfare is recognised as being one of the most expensive shopping boulevards in Europe where the likes of Luis Vuitton and Gucci are just moments walk from the hotel. Continue a little further and you’ll find the Estação de Rossio train Station, the touristic Elevador de Santa Justa and several excellent restaurants such as José Avillez’ Belcanto, which currently holds the no. 42 position on the world’s 50 best restaurants’ ranking. A recent €15 million refurbishment project has been undertaken to bring modern touches to the iconic property and ensure the utmost levels of comfort are maintained for guests checking-in to the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade. Passing through the glass sliding doors we are immediately enveloped by a sense of calm that offers a complete juxtaposition from the busy avenue outside. The reception area is engulfed in fresh floral blooms and an abundance

of soft furnishings which have been lovingly spaced throughout the large glass atrium. Turquoise curtains dangle seductively from the upper levels, while gold embellishment surrounds a small bar which is reflected in the elevators. Transporting guests into the upper reaches of the property where a collection of 285 rooms and suites awaits. Beautifully appointed, all room categories feature a classic design to enhance the feeling of urban luxury and are spacious and elegantly furnished with large comfortable double beds, a terrace or patio and a living area to relax and put your feet up after a day or exploration or shopping until you quite literally drop. Rooms and suites feature all of the expected modern comforts - flatscreen televisions, mini bar, electronic safe. It’s evident that a lot of thought has gone into the modernisation of the property and simple touches such as the inclusion of Bulgari and Hermès amenities in the suites help to elevate the Tivoli experience and cement the reputation of the landmark property. Outside of the room there’s plenty to explore with an outdoor swimming pool situated in a tropical garden at the rear of the property. This oasis of calm offers a small circular pool surrounded by vegetation and plenty of sun-loungers. Lower level guests will find a state-of-the-art fitness centre and the Anantara Spa, a first for the Portuguese capital and a serene environment that encourages introspection and a focus on wellbeing. Six treatment rooms act as a temporary haven and combine the far-eastern therapies for which the Anantara brand is renowned, with indigenous Portuguese rituals. If your stay only allows for one treatment, we’d suggest soothing those aching muscles with Anantara Signature Massage, using natural oils, combined with purpose-designed movements, to stimulate circulation and promote deep relaxation, while restoring the flow of energy along the meridian lines. Living up to a reputation as one of the city’s most popular meeting places, Tivoli Avenida Liberdade offers several exciting dining options. The classical Cervejaria Liberdade is the hotels’ all-daydining option and while breakfast offers up a live egg station, charcuterie and a plethora of pastel de nata, it’s the al la carte service of Portuguese coastal seafood specialities that piqued our interest. Traditionally cervejarias are small bars that also sell

food items and here the idea has been upscaled and expanded into a fine dining setting where plates of cured meat compete with a resplendent Arraiolos Sheeps Milk Cheese that is buttery in flavour and accompanied by a sweet pumpkin jam. Cervejaria Liberdade is also the place to try the traditional pica pau, a dish of rich and flavorful chopped beef loin served with home-made French fries and the pots of aromatic seafood rice piled high with crawfish lobster, clams and mussels. For a livelier experience, head to the Sky Bar for sundowners overlooking Lisbon’s terracotta rooftops. Much like the lobby downstairs it’s a popular meeting place with an energetic DJ and some of the best mixed-drinks you’re likely to find in the capital. Chefpreneur Olivier da Costa’s second Scene restaurant (following a successful opening in Sao Paulo, Brazil) is anchored around an art-deco inspired dining room featuring plenty of foliage and a tree raising from the central bar area. It’s an exciting space to frequent and a sense of frivolity overcomes the restaurant which serves up an exciting menu that fuses the best of Brazil and Portugal into an eclectic selection of dishes that also supports a Japanese sushi bar. There’s a freshness to the Alaskan King crab tacos that is hard to replicate, while the octopus carpaccio is alive with flavours thanks to a vibrant lemon vinaigrette, yet it’s the lesser-known Brazilian dishes that have us enraptured. From the simply moreish deep-fried tapioca with cured cheese through to a show-stopping dessert of dulce de leche soufflé with guava ice cream, that would have had us licking the bowl were it not for the high-end clientele perched on the tables in our vicinity. We split our trip and found ourselves in the sleepy mountain town of Sintra for the latter half of our Portuguese adventures. Forested mountainsides, elaborate villas and castles precariously perched on mountain tops are all part and parcel of a visit to UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sintra. The home of royalty, Sintra adopts a slower pace and feels more restrained than Lisbon and late afternoons (following the departure of tour buses and daytrippers) is the ideal time for culture vultures to strap on their walking boots and explore. Steeped in history our base during our all too short stay was an actual Palace! The Tivoli Palacio de Seteais is a rare find of a hotel having been built in the 18th century in a neoclassical style by the then Dutch Consul in Portugal. During the 19th century, several 46

distinguished Portuguese families lived in the Palace including the fifth Marquis of Marialva, who built the triumphal arch linking the two wings. Then in 1953 the Palace was converted into a hotel. With just 30 rooms, the experience of staying in a palace is one of refined luxury that features exemplary levels of service and rooms that have been tastefully modernised while still retaining their characteristic features and period furniture. Timber-framed windows, deep bathtubs, rich tapestries and a collection of artworks provide the rooms with a sense of timelessness that exemplifies the properties natural charm. Our superior room overlooking orchards of lemon trees evokes z sense of venturing back in time with its creaky wooden floorboards, heavyset curtains and a wooden bed that all add to the charm of feeling like a pampered prince/princess. We spent many hours exploring the ballrooms and expansive grounds, home to hedge mazes, herb gardens and a beautiful outdoor swimming pool, cut into the mountainside and offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Similar to Lisbon, the Anantara Spa Tivoli Palácio de Seteais is the place to unwind and features only two treatment rooms for an exclusive clientele. When guests enter the spa, it is given over in its entirety - something we’ve not experienced before. The spa is situated inside a circular pigeon-house that has been converted into a quaint and intimate space where treatments are more specialised and many of the products are made from natural ingredients hand-picked from the hotel grounds. With only one dining option on site, the Seteais Restaurant is regarded as one of Sintra’s very best and treats diners to a royal experience complete with pressed white table clothes, dainty

cutlery, gold crockery and a menu of Portuguese favourites that have been reinterpreted and elevated to match the palatial dining room. Roasted duck magret, braised codfish and octopus are all prevalent on the menu and bookings are essential. Lisbon and Sintra are ideal for a combined visit to Portugal and are more than likely to leave you yearning to return. Providing guests with unrestrained luxury, high levels of service, excellent food and beverage and discretion, Tivoli hotels also offer several luxury properties along the Portuguese Algarve as well as in hotels further afield. Tivoli is undeniably a brand with a unique sense of style that embodies the warmth of Portuguese hospitality with its eyes firmly set on expansion. ✤

By Rapsody

A melodious tribute to some of the most influential black women, Rapsody’s newest album is music for your soul. The American rapper’s third studio album, Eve truly showcases her musical genius and creativity in all its glory. Bringing her black womanhood and ingenuity to the fore, the album pays a beautiful homage to strong female role models. A masterful tribute to Nina Simone, Nina includes an eerie cut of Strange Fruit. Featuring a collection of historical footnotes, the celebratory and uplifting track is the perfect tribute to the late singer. Featuring everyone from J. Cole to Queen Latifah, the album continues Rapsody’s exploration of female power. Cleo, a song about the unfairness of sexism, sees her sounding unstoppable and liberated. Dedicated to fictional bank robber Cleo Sims, the hardhitting banger is sprinkled with samples of the 1981 Phil Collins hit In The Air Tonight. The song sees the North Carolina native speaking to her critics and revealing she hasn’t always felt comfortable in the culture she so effortlessly carries. From the cascading album opener to the preceding proverbial masterpieces, the intricately woven details and heart touching lyrics make Eve a true triumph! 52

A raw and vulnerable celebration of relationships and emotions, Common’s latest offering will have you in your feelings. Having always worn his heart on his sleeve, the Chicago-hailing rapper, actor and activist goes all out on his newest album. Tackling the singer’s relationships with himself, his past romantic relationships as well as with his daughter, Let Love is all about embracing love in all forms. HER Love, featuring guest appearances from Daniel Caesar and Dwele is the rapper’s ode to HipHop history. Also featuring an unreleased beat from J Dilla, the song talks about the important women in Common’s life. Teaming up with Swizz Beatz, Hercules showcases the toughest cut on the album. Swizz is relatively calmer and more soulful than his usual hook work, while Common spins a complicated rhyme scheme that is reminiscent of his earlier work. Offering spiritual depth, soul and dimension, Common truly challenges himself and goes deeper than ever on Let Love.

Set against the backdrop of postwar Switzerland, the novel centres on a boarding school in the Appenzell. The narrator begins to describe the life of a remorseless young Eve, being a captive of the school, as well as her designs to win the affections of the apparently perfect new girl, Fréderique. As she broods over her intentions and the level and nature of control, the novel takes a suspended, unsettling energy. A beautifully worded read!

BOSE 700S: INNOVATIVE SOUND Fifty One East and Bose announced the availability of the latest pair of its flagship headphones in Qatar. The new wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, featuring the biggest leap forward in headphones since the iconic QuietComfort.

B

ose 700s introduces a revolutionary new voice interface that redefines mobile communication the way Bose noise cancellation redefined mobile audio. They’re built off the legendary performance of QCs to transform the most demanding environments into private sanctuaries for listening. And they debut new, pioneering technologies to magically transform the same public spaces into private rooms for talking with friends, family, and virtual personal assistants. With their exclusive innovation, the 700s isolate a user’s voice from 360 degrees of unwanted sound. And that lets Bose 700 owners do what’s never been done. THE REVOLUTIONARY BOSE VOICE SYSTEM The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 have been engineered from the ground up as an integrated system, with a new acoustic and electronics package, new digital signal processing, and a new eight microphone system for the 62

PLUGGED IN •

most complete, effortless headphone experience ever. Six microphones dramatically cancel noise, so it doesn’t reach your ears. Two of those microphones combine with two others to dramatically improve voice pickup. A beamform-array isolates your speech, suppressing everything else that’s audible. A rejection-array adds a second line of defense, tracking then blocking the most disruptive remaining sound — from a coffee grinder to other dialogue nearby. It all happens in real-time — adapting as you move, turn your head, and your environment changes. It works with any VPA, any phone paired to the 700s, or any phone or phone/headphone combination on the farend. And it works from anywhere, whether you’re talking to people or machines. FIRST-EVER FULL-TRANSPARENCY EXPERIENCE, CONVERSATION MODE — AND BRILLIANT AUDIO PERFORMANCE The Bose 700s use the next-generation Bose noise cancellation for improved noise reduction, and sophisticated electronic circuitry that eliminates the “hiss” regularly heard in other headphones. Combined, they enable the 700’s new adjustable noise cancellation feature, including a full-transparency experience that gives the term “off” an entirely new meaning. While the highest setting delivers the most powerful silence, the lowest lets your surroundings pass-through the earcups fully — so with the flick of a switch, you hear yourself, others, and everything else like you aren’t wearing a headset at all. Conversation Mode lets you gain the same awareness while enjoying content — so you can pause entertainment and noise cancellation simultaneously, chat face-to-face or listen for announcements, and resume where you left off when you’re done. The product comes in Black and Silver, the Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 is available at Bose store - Lagoona Mall, Fnac- Lagoona Mall and Doha Festival City, Modern Home – Al Maha Center, iSpace – Lagoona Mall and Al Maha Center, Virgin Megastore – Landmark, Villaggio, Doha Festival City, Mall of Qatar and other major retailers across Doha.

THE THURSDAY ACT

Nothing excites me more than the sun setting on a Thursday evening, announcing the arrival of the much-awaited weekend. The weekend act got better as FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan headed to City Centre Rotana’s Teatro for the Chanchai Table… fact magazine

73

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

W

hen I got to know that Chef Chanchai had a special dinner every Thursday night at Teatro, I knew there was no way that I was going to miss out on that. I knew that the chef was going to be giving his full attention on this dedicated night but, I was not expecting the three acts to take the gastronomical level of City Centre Rotana up this high. Teatro is known for fusion cuisine and the minute I entered the restaurant, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire set up of dark red tones that were luminated by paintings and masks, reflecting the influence of Italy. Private tables were set up and then, there was our table with the perfect view, right in the corner of the restaurant. Old fashioned chandeliers hung low from the ceiling, reflecting the candle light every so often, making the entire setup alluring. When we were seated at a table that seemed too big for two, I was a bit confused, until the first course was served; vegetable spring rolls, tempuras, edamame, glass noodles salad, and sushi maki of four different kinds. At moments like these, one is just lost because this is too much food for anyone – that is until you take in the first bite. Light, divine and something for every palate. I started with the crunchy maki and couldn’t stop after that. Even though glass noodles are not normally a favourite of mine, I kept adding the salad to the side because it complemented all the dishes in front of me at the moment. With ‘Act Two’ came the main course and I was waiting to see what Asian cuisines the chef had made for us. I cannot seem to point a favourite since the crispy chilli beef struck such a harmonious tone with my palate, then the two different types of prawns gave me a completely different challenge till I finally settled for the good old chicken fried rice. I was told that there would be a variety but the serving, which is to be shared by two, kept this glorious deal going on for me. I didn’t feel like I was wasting too much food and was eating just the perfect amount because I wanted to do justice to this experience. For the final act, I was told that there will

74

be a mini big show. Now, I have tried all types of desserts around town where some dress up the entire table with dessert by making the most delicious mess, some bring in the nitrogen gas as the big ‘wow’ and some simply rely on outstanding taste – what could be left? Well, apparently, it was literally a mini big show. A huge bucket full of ice had assorted Asian fruits, coconut ice cream, lemongrass crème brulee and some crispy banana with salty caramel sauce. I sat there, for a good ten minutes, testing all these new fruits that I was served before I started on the luscious caramel sauce and banana. The experience was sublime. A different concept in the market which gives other Asian restaurants a new bar to meet, this was one of the most favourite ways I could start off my weekend! ✤

FRIDAY ISLAND BRUNCHIN’ If there’s one place that FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan likes to call the best escape from Doha, it is the Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara. A fine Friday afternoon called for the yummiest island brunch one could imagine…

fact magazine

A

quick boat ride is my ideal escape to the Island dream we all tend to have. Where people think of Bali and the Maldives, I find myself craving for the familiar route that leads me to my favourite: Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara that becomes my hideout whenever the city gets a bit too much for me. From the entertainment, the kids’ club, the eateries to the unparalleled spa and wellness centre, and the extraordinary service at the resort, there is truly nothing like this safe haven I have come to know. As the Doha weather calmed down and I set to conquer the feast of Kings at the Island, I was greeted by the usual remarkable service. No matter how many times you have been to the Island, it is always a treat and a breath of fresh air (literally) to be there. People split apart and went off to the usual diving activities as I headed to the brunch, which was set at the award-winning Azraq restaurant. I loved how the décor had slightly changed since the last time I had been there. There were umbrellas hanging from the roof when you crossed the wellness centre, giving the entire entrance a contrasting look from the usual set up. A true summer feel that matches the entire ambience for the day made me even more excited to see what new things I could try here. As for the brunch, the live stations are set-up right outside the restaurant, giving you the feel-good vibes even before you enter the restaurant. An entire bus is displayed with snacks for children and I admit to picking up a few jellies on my way inside because, seriously, who wouldn’t? I found my husband constantly hogging the live sushi station as I kept shifting between the Italian and kids’ station. Inside the restaurant, there was a variety of Arabic dishes and desserts (yes, more desserts!) with the staff regularly coming around on every table to ask for the choice of drinks. The Churrascaria-styled meat stole our hearts - and bellies - from the get-go and we kept enjoying a little bit of the sweet

78

fact magazine

Mexican mix that they offered as well. The display of the brunch gives the ideal Hawaiian island vibes as you see the décor set up to accommodate the ideal breezy feels. From colleagues to families, the Island is the idyllic retreat for all and the fact that it was fully crowded before it even started was just further proof about the impeccable quality of food and the service that one gets at this end. Whether you choose to dine indoors or al fresco, next to the breath-taking view, the variety at the brunch and the homely environment that is accentuated by the blue and white of the beach and sea is surely bound to make you want to come

back. It is an absolute pleasure to dine outside, looking at the Doha skyline from afar and being able to relax in a completely rejuvenated environment. With various packages offered by the resort and the number of activities around the island, you can get yourself a day pass and escape the city life for a day to be easy-breezy at this ultimate gem that Qatar has. ✤

THE CIGAR EXPERTS

FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan headed out on a Thursday night on the lookout for a good, easy time. El Cedro Tasting Room at Sharq Village & Spa got her attention and lured her food fiend side right in at first sight..

fact magazine

• DINING FOCUS

E

l Cedro opened its doors to the public in the summer and I never got time to visit it. When a tiring week at work demanded an easy night out, I finally got ready to check it out, hoping I was making the right choice. Sharq Village & Spa is already a stunning place to begin with so when I entered the dimly lit room, it was a huge contrast in the environment. However, the beautiful décor of the lounge had me fall in love immediately. Painted in blue with lights accentuating the products and a cigar vault right at the entrance, this lounge demanded me to relax at once. Jazz and blues music set the mood in place as I found myself a private, comfortable area to settle in. I couldn’t help but take a round of the cigar lounge again since the creative and lovely interiors asked for all the praises I could give. The lounge had tiny mirrors, a bar right in the middle and private areas where everyone could sit without feeling like they’re right in sight. Felipe Rojas Bruna came in and introduced himself as a Cigar Sommelier and nothing pleased me more than getting all the information that I received. From winning championships and being a cigar journalist, I was so excited to be around someone who had this much knowledge. He entertained us with the history of cigars and cigar lounges and how initially they were meant to be a ‘lads’ thing. Felipe told us that even if we bought our own cigars to the venue, he would be able to give us information about it. The vault of the lounge had all Cuban cigars and I was told that they have booked a new shipment of cigars so that they can offer the finest. The conversation easily flowed and as Felipe entertained us with lighting the best cigar for a beginner, Anastasia, the mixologist, started her impressive streak of in-house drinks which made the Thursday night an ideal relaxing way to welcome the weekend. Along with this, Joy, our server, brought in the best of delicious nibbles at the restaurant

82

fact magazine

and I must say, everything that she personally recommended turned out to be the best. The slow-cooked brisket with the delicious honey-BBQ sauce, the seafood with impeccable marination and the sliders that gave a different edge to the night. The kitchen was experimenting with different sides which included one of my now-favourite chutneys that complimented any dish but went perfectly with the brisket. My bites ended with the salted chocolate cookies, also highly recommended by Joy, and altogether, it was exactly like the night that I was looking for. Every person has a vibe of their own and mine, for the night, was exactly the one I received; relaxed, smooth music and drinks that made me forget the stress of the week. ✤

to work and after a few worthwhile moments of getting my skin clean, the face massages started and a series of products were used. At one point, my skin burned so much that I almost screamed and Leah assured me that it was temporary and for the best. As it turned out, that was the magic X-factor for my skin. As a result, I could see that my tan had become lighter and there was a glorious, visible glow. Such amazing skin only needed a blow dry to complete the entire look. I was ready for my event; fresh, relaxed and glowing! If you’re looking for a place where you can spend the day and get all your beauty needs focused on, Violletta is the place you need to go to. The staff caters to Arabic clients as well as English so, you will find yourself getting information with any of the experts. ✤

The one-hour long massage is something I consider as my top five massages in Doha. Where I do believe I am an aromatherapy girl, this massage helped me loosen up muscles that were in a knot due to my recent gym routine. From stretching to the smooth movements to relax me for the day, it was an hour of utmost satisfaction for me. Even though the rooms were small, the music, dim lights and ambience was perfect. Leah convinced me to get a facial right after as she saw a lot of problems with my skin. What I had thought would be a series of scrubs and creams turned out to be oh-so-painful because my skin was experiencing the worst of the Doha weather. I was informed that my dehydrated skin and open pores had given way to blackheads and acne – both of which I detest. Leah got
