The editor

Farewell FACT, & Bye Bye Bahrain! Tony Sidgwick Editor-in-Chief

tony@factlive.com

T

his month, FACT Magazine begins a new chapter in its life, as I sign off and hand over to a new editor, Shabana Adam, before heading off to pastures new in the UAE. It has been one hell of a journey with the magazine since I joined the team in December of 2009, threeand-a-half years ago exactly this month. We’ve seen the sad departure of founding editor Arran Dall, the man who started it all, leaving me at the helm. We’ve seen the magazine joining the fold of the Nans Group, before being joined by our now-sister publication Ohlala!. We’ve launched a second edition in Qatar which is now going strong in its third year. We’ve survived through the credit crunch, the Arab Spring, and several of Zara de Haldevang’s zany health drives and weird diets. We’ve seen the editorial team grow from just two staff members to a whole team

News from the FACT Penthouse of editors, writers and freelancers, we’ve launched a website, an iPad app, and undergone a complete design overhaul, all in the name of creating a bigger, better and brighter magazine for all of you, our beloved readers. However, while I’m very sad to leave behind the magazine, the team and my beloved Bahrain, it’s time for me to begin a new journey. I’ll take away with me a lot of great memories, and more than a few harrowing ones, and I know for a fact that I leave a wiser, more experienced and stronger writer than when I joined in 2009.

So sad news - Editor Tony Sidgwick leaves FACT to head to the Emirates after three-and-a-half years with the magazine, and we wish him bon voyage! Tony hands over the reigns to new Editor Shabana Adam, who’s already getting comfortable in the FACT penthouse... Tony also recently returned from an epic trip to the US, where he partied in Las Vegas, walked the Hollywood Walk of Fame, saw Denzel Washington and went to a Rolling Stones concert! And the rest of the team weren’t jealous at all, and definitely didn’t put nasty things in his coffee when he got back...

Image of the Month

So I say goodbye to everyone in Bahrain, to those of you who I’ve met, and the many more of you with whom I never had the privilege. This is me, Tony Sidgwick, signing out.

All the best!

This is an image from the video Movement, by Hisham Tawfiqi, who we interview on page 16. To us, it just epitomises cruising in Bahrain!

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

One of our favourite parties is back this month. Not only will it be the last outside beach party before Ramadan, it will also mark the anniversary of the infamous Candee Beach. So grab your beach gear, load up on sun cream and head to Amwaj on June 28… The last Candee Beach party that took place in Amwaj Marina featured DJ Judge Jules in all his glory. Just under 2000 people came and partied on the beach, and boy did they party hard. Some of you may remember the first Candee Beach event that took place this time last year. After a HUGE demand for something new and fresh to take place on the island, this new beach party brand was welcomed with very open arms and has taken off at such a fast pace that it has quickly become one of the most popular events in Bahrain. Local DJs have had their chance to shine, while there have also been a number of international talents that have flown over especially for their fun in the sun. June 28 marks the anniversary party, and you should all start preparing yourselves now as it is set to be a scorcher… in every sense of the word! Headlining this act is DJ Joshua Roberts, a man who has been involved with Candee Beach since its birth. He told FACT, “This is the seventh time I have been to Bahrain. I have watched it grow so much and, thanks to Warren (Stalls), it has really built up. I would say that the Candee Beach has a very similar vibe to that of Ibiza but with a Middle Eastern touch.” Having spent the past year playing in the UK, Belgium and introducing a new night in Space, Sharm (Egypt), Joshua is pretty excited about this party: “This is the time when the new and fresh tracks are coming out. I play differently with two decks and a sampler and re-mix as I’m playing. Warren has taken CB to a new level – I am very excited about coming back.”n GO: Candee Beach is on June 28 and starts from 3pm till late. Buy tickets by calling 3777 9936 or check out the Facebook page for more information.

Zara’s RANT of the Month

‘Can you beat the holiday blues?’

The art of switching from holiday to work mode I got a pretty stern telling off the other day by a friend whose name is Munky – the nickname didn’t really emphasise the seriousness of his words but, all the same, I took note. His words were, “When are you going to write a happy column? You sound like a right old grump.”

alone enjoy a holiday. What I did learn is that a month detox means that the days spent back home did blur into one, where headaches were suffered and copious amounts of food eaten.

And then I realised how very right he was. Perhaps it is because I have just returned from a 10-day trip home. Perhaps it is because I detached myself from my phone, computer, work clothes and red Nissan Tiida on a daily basis. And perhaps it is because I escaped the country, even if just for a little while... I find myself somewhat more positive and refreshed. Enough to stop whining for 300 words anyway. In all honesty, it is a pretty hard transition to make, the work to holiday and back to work mode. I am blaming it on being half German that I struggle to get to grips with doing nothing. It takes me 10 days to unwind, let

Love It Medals for Bahrain

THE SCOPE

12

FACT BAHRAIN JUNE

We were pretty stoked to see that Bahrain bagged nine medals, including two golds, during the 18th Arab Athletics Championships in Qatar. Alemu Bekele won gold in the 10,000m final, as did Genzeb in the 800m while runners Tejitu Babaa and Isaac Korir Kekikuo won gold and Shitaye Eshete Mubarak won bronze. Congrats Bahrain!

Now I am back here, heavier and broke, yet happier, and Sunday mornings are not so much of a drag anymore. The supposed 13-minute drive to work (which is actually 30 minutes due to road plonkers) is made better by the discovery of an ancient iPod and some classic playlists. The four walls I find myself confined in are a little whiter and brighter; even my chair seems a little more comfy… ok TOO far, it doesn’t, just got a serious positive mental attitude (PMA) going on. n

Hate It Child Predators Walking Free

We read recently that child abusers are walking away free from court as prosecutors are failing to investigate cases properly. Testimonies of young children “are not considered as evidence in the court” meaning that the only evidence which can be taken is from forensic reports. Shocking.

Can’t Believe It New deadly virus!

A little too close for comfort, there have now been 16 deaths reported in Saudi from a new respiratory virus related to Sars. Apparently it starts as a flu and quickly shuts your whole body down. Watch out for symptoms people!

NOTEWORTHY

What we first saw as a posting on Facebook has quickly turned into a growing trend on many Social Media platforms throughout Bahrain. Movement, a short film by Hisham Tawfiqi, has earned its place in our Noteworthy feature this month. Read on to find out more…

Hisham may be a teenager still, but his skill proves that experience doesn’t always come with age. With two years left at school, this budding film fanatic will, in our eyes, go very far in life and his latest film goes to show that. With 511 views in just five days, Movement is one to watch if you have a free eight minutes. After watching the short film a number of times, Hisham came into the FACT office to tell us more about it. When asked about his relationship with film, he replied, “I actually just started a year ago with experimental videography. I am currently a DJ and a music producer; with electronic music you spend a lot of time behind the computer. I really wanted to explore the artistic and technical side and get outdoors.” This is Hisham’s first experimental film and, in his own words, “hopefully the first one to start my career in videography.” The concept of Movement is to be able to go outside and learn. In the beginning of the film, we are met with a quotation from Yann Martel ‘Why do people move? What makes them uproot and leave everything they’ve known for a great unknown beyond the horizon? Why climb this Mount Everest of formalities that makes you feel like a beggar? Why enter this jungle of foreignness where everything is new, strange and difficult? The answer is the same the world over: people move in hope of a better life.’ It took Hisham two months to film and complete the movie. The young

talent actually had no storyboard and “went with the flow”. The idea behind the film stems from further thought on the education system here. He said, “For me, there are two types of people. The first type are the people who learn from behind their desks; the second are those who learn from being outside. School doesn’t challenge me so I wanted to embrace the outside world - I have been chasing sunsets every day!” Hisham is currently working on a documentary based on the effects of climate in Bahrain. Inspired by the culture of the kingdom, the philosophy of the world, the school system and human potential, he has big plans for the future. He told us, “I love the quotation ‘there’s more to life than your GPA’. I want to become an entrepreneur and perhaps start a community for other aspiring filmmakers here.” Big dreams for a young man who has already started to prove his worth in the field. Watch this space. n To watch Movement, type in the film name and Hisham Tawfiqi into YouTube. Enjoy it! FACT BAHRAIN JUNE

Technological Titillation: eShabab 2013!

Fostering technological innovation in the minds of Bahraini youth, eShabab returns for its third event, and promises to be bigger and better than ever!

First created in 2009, eShabab was designed to expose Bahraini youth to the latest technologies, and in turn inspire technological creativity in their minds. In its first year there were 250 delegates from universities across the kingdom, with 16 unique and innovative projects challenging each other for the event awards. The following year, those figures almost doubled, with 450-plus delegates and 23 projects taking part! “This year, we come stronger, with a conference, workshops, and a program to link innovators with the private sector along with our usual Innovation Competition,” said Mr. Ahmed al Hujairy, CEO of Worksmart, the organisers of the competition. 18

FACT BAHRAIN JUNE

“We wholeheartedly invite Bahrain’s youth, government and private sector to come and take active part in this threeday event for Innovation in Technology.” The eShabab initiative came as an acknowledgment of the need to support youth in Bahrain in order for them to bring their innovative projects and initiatives to light, and eventually becoming products that benefit the society and economy. This year, eShabab comes as part of the InvoTech conference, a three-day event covering the most current subjects related to the fields of technology and ICT, and educating participants on the most relevant issues. This is done through workshops and talks on various relevant and topical subjects hosted by guest speakers, and an exciting

technology competition, eShabab 2013, in which students and participants enter projects and compete for the awards. Subjects of the talk sessions include ‘ICT and Innovation Strategies’, ‘The Skills that contribute to innovation’, ‘Innovation in Telecoms’, and ‘Patents and protecting your rights,’ to name a few. There will be a total of eight sessions over the course of the two-day event, with four on each day. The eShabab competition is open to university students in Bahrain, with spaces for thirty projects to be involved. There will be nine projects awarded by eShabab. n GO: The Invotech conference and eShabab 2013 competition will take place on July 1, 2 and 3 at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre. Code-Switching at Al Riwaq An exhibition brand new to the island, ‘Code-Switching’ is the latest artistic showcase taking place in Adliya’s most popular gallery, Al Riwaq Art Space. It actually opened at the end of May, but the good news is that it is running until June 27. The exhibition features the work of artist Michael Arcega and focuses on the polyglot (‘linguist’ for those unsure of the meaning) culture of Bahrain. Michael’s work investigates code switching, translations and mistranslations through the production of contemporary art works in the form of sculpture, installation, videos, prints and watercolours. An interdisciplinary artist from San Francisco, California, the artist works primarily in sculpture and installation, and his art revolves mainly around language. In the past, his work has been exhibited at the Berkeley Art Museum, the San Jose Institute of

Contemporary Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and the Asia Society in New York. Michael said, prior to his exhibition opening, “Code-switching is a linguistic term that describes the switching from one language to another, whether it’s from Arabic to English or from Sculpture to Painting as an example”. The artist is also currently an instructor to the Art Space’s Application Form 01 for Developing Artistic Careers, where he is working with seven students who are all responding to Bahraini objects and translating them into new artwork. Make sure you catch this exhibition while it lasts – and add in an evening stroll through Block 338 while the cooler heat still allows it. A refreshing change from the busier clubs and bars around the island, art. haus is the baby of Sami Dee – a talented DJ who has played in the UK and the Middle East. Now with its fourth instalment of 2013, June 6 is the evening that brings you the deep ‘jackin’ sounds of Chicago veteran Chitronix. A guy who is now a Bahrain resident, he hails from the south side of Chitown and was part of the scene that gave birth to House music back in the early 80s. He has become an ambassador of House music and an art.haus favourite. Sami Dee – an underground DJ and Producer since 1992 – has been associated with names such as The Ministry of Sound in London and Coral Beach here. A C r o wd o f Two more hilarious nights are on the cards. Brought to you by The Chuckle Club, let us introduce you to two trios of comedians, coming to entertain this June and July… JUNE

Alan francis Stand-up comedian, actor and writer Alan is a multi-talented chap. Scottish by birth (so some audience members may need a translator handy), he won the UK Channel 4’s ‘So You Think You’re Funny’ back in 1991 and has since developed his reputation and become skilled in more ways than one. He has played in all of the UK’s major comedy clubs, including The Comedy Café, Banana Cabaret, Funnyside, Screaming Blue Murder and Up the Creek. He has also got people giggling all around the world, including hot spots like Hong Kong, Shanghai and even Romania (that’s in Europe by the way). A performance at the infamous Edinburgh Fringe festival earnt him the praise of “pure brilliance” with his delivery being “pitch perfect”, his timing “spot on” and Alan being plain “hilarious”.

22

FACT BAHRAIN JUNE

Iain stirling Iain is another Scottish man to make a note of this month. A stand-up comedian, presenter and writer from Edinburgh, he is now based in London and actually started doing stand-up while he was in his final year of Law at Edinburgh University. During this year he also made the final of both the Paramount Funniest Student and Chortle Student Comedian of the Year competitions. Dubbed as being one of the “hottest newcomers” following a performance in front of 750 people at the Glasgow Fruitmarket, his rise to the top of comedy has been notably fast and impressive. He now has had gigs all over the UK and currently presents on the CBBC channel along with his trusty canine puppet and sidekick ‘Hacker’. A guy who is “hilariously grotesque”, and a “very cool chatty endearing comic”, he is young, bright and, most importantly, a damn good laugh.

ROB Deering Award-winning and guitar-playing comedian Rob Deering has cemented his reputation over the years and become one of the UK’s finest stand-ups. He took six solo shows to the Edinburgh Festival; he has headlined some of Britain’s major comedy clubs and started his very own ‘The Rob Deering Experience’. Rob is best known for his appearance on the TV screen. His stand-up appearances include Comedy Rocks, Sing If You Can, Celebrity Total Wipeout, The World Comedy Tour, Strictly Dance Fever, Celebrity Juice and Big Brother’s Big Mouth/Little Brother to name a fair few. The years have only added to Rob’s success so it’s worth popping down to check out his work.

C o m edia ns JULY

Dave Fulton Dave’s bio is a comical one to read; so much so that we wanted to give you a few excerpts: he “started comedy back when it was popular and profitable. Decided to stay on past the point of when it wasn’t.” His ultimate acting role is “to be the bad guy in a Tom Cruise film, where I kill his family and leave him for dead. He spends the next ninety minutes tracking me down with the limp I gave him, going from diner to strip joint to a recently robbed gas station showing a photo of me to strangers who’s collective response upon seeing it is ‘he’s not a very nice person’ to which Tom replies something like, ‘no he’s not.’” Although this comedian may look like the under-read brother of Billy Connolly, Dave knows full well he is an American abroad. He also is a man who understands irony, thinks it’s important to share more about being a whiner and likes a good drink.

Tiffany Stevenson Tiffany’s comedy career kicked off just under seven years ago, and she was no stranger to utilizing her skills, having worked as an actress alongside established artists such as Ricky Gervais (The Office), Stephen Fry (Absolute Power) and Jon Bird (Chambers). Like many other fabulous comedians, Tiffany burst onto the scene in Edinburgh with a lead role in the play ‘Talk Radio’, before teaming up with co-star Phil Nichol and brought the sell-out London show ‘Old Rope’ to the Edinburgh Fringe. A regular on the Sky News sofa reviewing the newspapers, she has been described as “a classic upwardly mobile working-class Londoner. And like [Micky] Flanagan she extracts comedy gold onstage from cultural contrasts.” Being the only female in the July line-up, she will offer a female take on comedy after all the male predecessors.

Phil Nichol At FACT we were lucky not to take a breath before reading Phil’s biography… as it is 10 pages long – somewhat impressive. An acclaimed actor, presenter, producer, comedian, writer and musician (not too talented then!), it seems there is no end to his skills. Energetic and exciting, determined and motivated, Dave has an unquenchable thirst to break boundaries and innovate with his work. The festivals he has performed in go over the two-hand count; his TV appearances are longer than a typed A4 page and the praise from various press sources are endless… definitely enough to make every living comedian jealous. With compliments including “Nichol is absolutely born to perform”, “magnetic” and “faultless”, you would be an absolute fool to miss out on this internationally acclaimed star. Catch us in the front row, and take full advantage of him performing in Bahrain.

RashID Al-oraifi - a man who has made his mark on bahraini culture - tells us all about his childhood dream, his museum and his gallery. Rashid’s Life Born in 1944, many may say Rashid has had a lifetime to explore his talents. No one, however, could argue against the extensive span of just how much this man has achieved. Art took hold of Rashid’s life at the age of eight. Born with a natural gift, although his parents perhaps disagreed at the time to his obsession with drawing on walls, the young boy was attracted by nature, the sea, people and daily activities in Bahrain. With these elements becoming the foundations of his work, he remains to this day deeply attached to his birthplace as a country, a home and an oasis of symmetry, beauty and colour. His list of accolades puts others to shame. Starting at the beginning, in 1970, he founded the Bahrain Contemporary Arts Society. In 1972

he was the first Bahraini artist to win first prize in the first exhibition ever hosted by the Kingdom. Four years later, he became the first Bahraini artist to host his own exhibition at the Al-Urubah Club. Other commendations include being the first Bahraini to participate in the Prince Charles contest exhibition in Monte Carlo; becoming the President of the Bahrain Contemporary Arts Society and, one of great interest to us, opening his own museum in Bahrain: The Dilmun School of Art – “A childhood dream” he told us. The History of Dilmun Art Bahrain is one of the smallest nations in the world and, for those who were unfamiliar with this fact, legend has it that Bahrain was the Garden of Eden and has ultimately been historically confirmed as the

The only evidence found was a large collection of unique seals, of which there are more than 1200, made from soapstone. Commonly white in colour and measuring about one inch in width, they offer a glimpse into the beliefs, cultures, habits and thoughts of the Dilmun people and life. The challenge is to uncover the relationship between all the inscriptions – the majority have an average of six to seven signs - and discover the meaning. Each of the seals has its own tale to tell, and Rashid Al-Oraifi offers his own version. Although never laying claim to comprehending the true epigraphic meaning, his approach remains that of an artistic nature. The Dilmun School of Art opened in Juffair in 1995. Acclaimed by others regionally and internationally as the spirit and creator of the recognised school, Rashid first opened the educational facility using impressions and styles and a fusion, thereof, from the old era and from modern day Arabia. of the everyday lives of merchants of the time, the Dilmun School gives credit for its style to many other ancient cultures and civilisations. Rashid the Artist When asked about his artistic style, Rashid told us, “In every piece of art there are unique techniques. One day in Geneva, I really wanted to draw, so I asked someone to bring me some paints but I forgot to ask for brushes

and so I had to use my hands… my art pieces have never looked better! I have achieved my childhood dream – to become an international artist – and now it is up to me to help sponsor and promote the world of art in my country. “I started with converting my house into a museum so others could discover the Dilmun art. Now, I have reached the point that I have fulfilled all of my plans; I have a gallery (In

Like many other artists here, Rashid explained his greatest challenge: “As an artist, it is hard to get proper media coverage when it comes to covering my achievements, contributions and production. Saying that, every new young artist should study and research and, most importantly, keep hold of their passion – there is always room to learn more.” So where does Rashed Al Oraifi go from here? “Rashed the artist seeks a successful art piece that is on par with today. My art is an expression of my being and my soul. This will never change.” n

NOTEWORTHY

Despite being only 38 years old, Mohammed Haddad has a lifetime’s worth of achievements to be proud of. FACT sits down with this musical wonder to find out more about his life, Bahrain’s music scene, and his relationship with sound.

What does music mean to you?

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

In a poetic way, it is the laboratory of love. It has the answers to everything; of fear, of dreams, and it is a way you can experiment. I think that many things in life can only be explained through music.

Musicians need to start loving each other, each other’s work and appreciate other people’s talents. I think a great number of people here are too worried about copying someone else’s work. For those looking to learn how to play an instrument, YouTube is a fantastic place to start. There are a lot of talented musicians on there who are spreading the love and respect for the art.

What is your inspiration?

Faces mainly, and friends’ stories. I normally work by concept, that’s why I work with drama and theatre. I also take a lot of inspiration from children and their lives. What has been your biggest achievement?

Do you live by a particular quotation?

I haven’t reached it yet! I think, perhaps, working with my father was the biggest and most wonderful project. My latest CD included my father and his work as a poet and my sister and her work as a photographer. How has the world of music changed here?

In Bahrain it is still struggling. There are still a lot of issues here which are holding music back from being accepted as an independent art. The main problem is that the culture here doesn’t seem to accept it for what it is and many people still consider it as ‘haram’. Over the past ten years, there have been a lot of great musicians appearing on the scene and we have to give them credit, as they have achieved great things with little support.

‘That whom God loveth not, they love not music” (Thomas Morley 1598). I think that the people, in this day and age, who don’t enjoy music are being punished by a higher force. How would you like to be remembered?

“Musicians need to start loving each other, each other’s work and appreciate other people’s talents”

For my compositions – especially for cello. I would say my style is contemporary world music, but I compose music for every and any instrument.

What is your favourite piece of music of all time?

There is a Chinese composer called Ryûichi Sakamoto who wrote a piece of music for the movie Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence. I first heard it when I was in 11th grade and it still makes me freeze. n To find out more about Mohammed, check out his website www.mohammedhaddad.com.

past few years, momentarily feel like they own the place. You are blessed with sounds from former greats, like Pusha-T, to half-decent punchline rappers, like Big Sean, to entourage bottom-feeders like CyHi the Prince. Too much time with this lot makes you feel like you’re trapped in a realityTV house, especially as Kanye does the occassional drop-by and plays a minute role in the entire album. In all honesty, this collection of mish-mash feels uncharacteristically disposable. Once the early run of singles are out of the way, of which ‘To the World’ is the only one worth a listen, you get to Kid CuDi’s dribbly alt-rock solo ‘Creepers’... it kind of makes you feel that even the artists involved have left the room. You may have Ma$e sounding pretty slick in ‘Higher’, but a handful of guests aisde, this album makes a weak case for all the bragging Kanye has done in the run up to this release. Massive disappointment. We blame it on a certain Kardashian for being the distraction. Pop

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

LIKE chocolate bars with raisins and tweed elbow patches, Ellie’s music sometimes gets pegged as stuff British people like. Maybe it’s because she performed at Big Will’s wedding or that her single ‘Lights’ took so long crawling up the U.S charts. Halcyon could have gone for easy crossovers, but the album is slightly too weird for that.. and that’s what makes it good. Words of warning: there are harp solos, digitally tweaked cyborg harmonies and at least one tribute to bodily fluids ‘My Blood’. ‘Anything Could Happen’ is a real smasher (just don’t tell Bahrain Radio it’s actually about skinny-dipping) and ‘Only You’ captures that Adele-esque heartbreak down to a t with smouldering electronic-soul. In this case, Ellie stands for edgy, exciting and eccentric. 36

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

THIS is defintely a step forward from the MC’s previous effort, but saying that, it has been six years since he has made an album that is worthy of a listen. Inspired by Marvin Gaye’s Trouble Man soundtrack, T.I’s eighth album packed full of a list of featured artists including Lil Wayne, Andre 3000, R. Kelly, Cee Lo Green and even Akon, who makes a very poor stand-in for Elton John and spoils oneo fhte albums many medtative tracks. ‘Sorry’ is a somber track, where T.I amd Andre 3000 drop verses that necessitate numerous listens to fully absorb and ‘Ball’ is an unruly listen, comprimising of a whirlwind synthesis of throwback and contemporary sounds. Great for background music, volume 4, but not one to bore your friends through.

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

VOCALLY Pitbull ticks all the boxes for being a MC/party promoter than being a vocal talent. With all that said, we wouldn’t mind rubbing shoulders with all the celebs at his parties, as it seems everyone on the planet is on the guest list. His last album Planet Pit positioned this Cuban-American party ambassador as an international concern and his latest album re-ups this man’s booming brand with border-crossing dance-floor thumpers, swag-embedded journalism, and duets with globally bankable artists like The Wanted, J..Lo and Enrique Iglesias. A definite highlight is ‘Feel This Moment’ - a collaboration with ever-shrinking, ever-bloating Christina Aguilera. This is a guilty pleasure enjoyed on full blast.

TOP FILMS SHOWING THIS MONTH IN BAHRAIN

ON SCREEN ‘OHHHH MYYYYY GODDDD - it’s so damn hot in this!’

Man of Steel D: zack snyder C: henry cavill, russell crowe, amy adams, kevin costner

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

This is the story of Superman. Everyone who is anyone knows this story but for you plonkers who need reminding here goes: Clark Kent (Cavill) is a journalist in his twenties who was adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent (Kevin Costner and Diane Lane), after he was transported to Earth from the dying planet of Krypton. Raised with values of his adoptive parents, he feels alienated because of his unique superpowers and struggles to find his own

place in life. When the world is attacked, he becomes the hero named Superman to protect the Earth and its people.

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING:

WE ARE THIS EXCITED THAT WE ARE WRITING IT IN CAPITALS. Imagine a Christopher Nolan story with all the Snyder effects and action.. we might even go as far as to suggest that this could be the film of the year. A bold statement but by gosh we will eat our words if it appears to be false. Prior to the release of this film, all was quiet on the media front. The main reason for this was that the creators wanted to create as much hype as they could. And what hype there was.

The trailers released prior to the screening painted Snyder’s movie reboot as a contemplative and morose take on the character. In fact, the previews do Superman or the film little justice as tonnes of butt-kicking action has been intentionally missed out. In simple terms, Man of Steel is realistic, but not overlyserious, in its approach to the fantastical comic book mythos. Ever-since the release of the likes of Captain America, The Avengers, Batman and even Hunger Games, heros and heroins are hot-beans right now. Plus, Superman’s cape is CG’d most of the time and looks totally awesome. Shotgun best seats.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

Two salesmen, Billy (Vaughn) and Nick (Wilson), whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital age, find their way into a coveted internship at Google. Here these forty-something year old men must compete with a group of young, tech-savvy geniuses for a shot at employment.

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING:

This is the first time this duo have been paired since 2005’s Wedding Crashers and, despite the break, they still play well off of each other, both showcasing their own brand of bumbling, naive charisma. There are plenty of ‘old guy’ jokes to cement the comedy pair as the underdogs and enough bromance to make sure the story has heart. They may be getting on a bit now, but it’s always refreshing to see that a movie relationship can continue to work if done well. Bravo boys.

‘Where’s the power button?’

Jamie that stiiiiiinks!!!!

[ SYNOPSIS]

This Is The End has got some great names like Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen, James Franco and Emma Watson in it. Comedy at its finest, all the cast members must face the true meaning of friendship and redemptoin as the world ends around them, following a series of cataclysmic events in LA. Sony Pictures actually released this as a trailer for Pineapple Express 2 on April Fool’s Day - well played we thought. Great for a lighthearted giggle, we will be watching this again.

White House Down Byzantium sees residents of a British coastal town learn, with deathly consequences, the secret shared by two mysterious women who have sought shelter at a local resort. Expect vampire performances from Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Arterton (woohoo at last!) and Sam Riley. People disappear, blood is sucked, a lot of folk die and we all go home after the credits roll wishing we had saved our BD3.

D: roland emmeric C: channing tatum, jamie foxx, maggie gyllenhaal

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: While on a tour of the White House with his young daughter, a Capitol policeman springs into action to save his child and to protect the president from a heavily armed group of paramilitary invaders.

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING:

This is one of a trio blockbusters (Olympus and G.I.Joe: Retaliation), since September 11, which shows terrorists violently attacking Washington landmarks. We really adored Jamie in Django Unchained but this one leaves us feeling a bit ‘bleurgh’ about his role decisions. Once again Channing is looking hunky and massive, shame neither of these don’t rub off on his acting skills, or lack of. FACT BAHRAIN JUNE

Windows 8:

Evolution or Revolution? Microsoft is still the world’s biggest software company, but in the face of rising challenges from Apple and Android, it needed to come up with something drastic to maintain a healthy market share. Enter Windows 8, an operating software that the company have been working on since before Windows 7 was even released in 2009, which gives you some indication of how seriously Microsoft have taken it. As the number of software platforms increases, with desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones and gaming consoles fragmenting the market, Windows 8 represents an ambitious attempt by Microsoft to tie all these platforms together with one all-encompassing and versatile OS. One of the most radical changes to this new version is the Start screen, which features a tile grid design that will look familiar to anyone who has already used a Windows smartphone. This start screen can be customised, labelled and tailored to your individual preferences, and 42

FACT BAHRAIN JUNE

navigating between the various tile grids is done with a drag of the mouse, or in a tablet, a swipe of your finger. Few things in the software world have polarised opinions as much as Windows 8 has. There are those who love the new design and praise Microsoft for their boldness, and there are others who don’t like it at all, and say that it is clumsy, overly-complicated and frustrating to use. However, we can’t help but feel that the latter camp can be compared to the legions of Facebook users who rant and rave whenever the website changes its design, only to continue to happily use it once they’ve gotten used to the new

design a week later. On our part, visually, we love the live-tile design of Windows 8. It is true that there is quite a learning curve for this new OS, and it does take a while to get used to it, but once you do, it’s perfectly comfortable to use. Once we’d learned our way around the new software, we were dragging, dropping and manoeuvring our tiles to customise it to our preferences like naturals. However, for those of you who still feel comfortable with the classic pop-up start menu and drag-and-drop file management style of the previous generations of Windows, fear not, as that style is still there in addition to the new interface. You can switch from the start-up screen to this interface to do things the old-fashioned way. The quickest way to navigate between the Start screen, file management screen and even active apps, Windows 8 uses a screen corner system similar to the active corners on Mac OS X. Simply move your mouse to a corner on the screen to quickly

TECHNOLOGY

access different screens. One of the most significant aspects of the new Windows is that it was designed very much to work both on a desktop/ laptop and a touchscreen tablet, and this is very evident in the new design. Some people have complained that this has made the usability with a mouse a bit clumsy, but again, this is just nitpicking, as it’s only clumsy compared to a touchscreen-enabled device, and a mouse could never compare in that case. If you don’t compare it to touchscreens, it’s no clumsier than Windows 7. However, given that there are now many tablet/laptops, with tablets that attach to a keyboard, and that the industry is rapidly heading towards touchscreen-enabled laptops, this design could be a masterstroke by Microsoft. There are now apps available on Windows 8 too, so instead of just loading up certain websites like Netflix or Facebook, you can download the app for Windows 8, and you get a much more tailored and richer experience. Other advantages include an increased reliance on cloud computing software, which means that synching files across multiple devices and accessing files when travelling becomes much more fluid and smooth. This will be a special bonus for Xbox 360 users, as you can access your Xbox live account from your PC, customise your avatar, track game progress and achievements, and so on. There is far more to Windows 8 than we could ever cover on these pages, with thousands of small features and changes that have either improved or worsened the experience, depending on who you speak to. However, as far as we’re concerned, Windows 8 is a bold and brave step for Microsoft which we respect them for

taking. As with any such radical change to a widely used product, there are going to be naysayers who ‘hate’ the new designs. However, we think that, as people come to terms with it and kinks are ironed out with updates, this will maintain Windows’ status as the world’s biggest OS. n

“It was designed very much to work both on a desktop/ laptop and a touchscreen tablet”

[ TOP 4 TIPS ] • To take a screen shot, press the Windows Key and Print Screen – it is automatically saved into your My Pictures folder • Move any tile by clicking and dragging the tile. While moving the tile, if you need a larger view of the Start screen, move the tile towards the top or bottoms of the screen to zoom out • If there is a tile you want on your Taskbar, right-click the tile and choose Pin to Taskbar • Searching and scrolling horizontally to find an app gets old fast. Instead just start typing the name of the tile you want and the screen instantly changes to show you nothing but the icons of the matching items.

Apple TV Available: virgin megastore (BD45)

There are a lot of people sitting on the fence about this one. The latest update wasn’t quite as ‘full-on’ as people had hoped. Rather it was a small revision to the existing media streamer of last year, retaining the same form factor but with an updated menu system and faster processor. Perhaps the biggest change, though, is its ability to stream and play full 1080p HD movies – last year’s model could only just manage 720p, which was all the iTunes Store offered for movie rentals and purchasing anyway. This, of course, means that Apple is going to have to update a lot of its iTunes Store

catalogue to 1080p for you to get the most out of it. As well as enabling you to purchase and rent movies, Apple TV does two other things to take note of: it acts as a browser for selected Internet content (YouTube, Vimeo, Netflik, iCloud, Podcasts etc) and thanks to Apple’s AirPlay system it can receive content streamed from a Mac, PC or iOS device and play it on your television. To be clear, this is what it can’t do – most importantly, you still can’t use it to watch free-to-air TV channels, so it’s not a proper set-top box solution and you can’t use it to browse the full web or write some emails, like you can with the iPad. The full implications of this become

clearer when you realise that some popular websites, which would make total sense to be accessed via an Apple TV, are unavailable… these include BBC’s iPlayer – although you can watch iPlayer on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad then use AirPlay to send it to your Apple TV. If you already have some Apple devices in your home, then Apple TV is a natural fit and, at this price, you should really consider getting one. For everyone else, there is no compelling reason to buy it over other media streamers. n PROS

Samsung Galaxy S4 Available: Major electronics outlets (BD240)

Every year, Samsung’s flagship Galaxy smartphone sets the tone for the company – its features proliferate across the Galaxy line and its physical design informs new phones and tablets… that’s A LOT to live up to. But is the Galaxy S4 worried? Not one bit. In fact, the mobile world may have just got a new king. Riding high on the popularity of the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2, the S4 walks a fine line between not throwing out what still works while adding new features to dazzle consumer eyes. Bigger display, full HD resolution, quadcore processor, 13-megapixel camera… the list goes on. The big question is, can the battery handle everything owners will throw at this phone? (see later). The design language of the latest model stays close to that of the S3 (why mess with a good thing?); the S4 is just as comfortable to hold, light and as goodlooking. The power and volume buttons stick out just enough to find without looking, the plastic unibody design means battery access is easy, as well as getting to the microSD and SIM card slots. What’s great is that the S4 is 4.6 ounces – 0.1 ounces less than the S3. This has even been done with adding a bigger screen… impressive. The 5-inch display on the S4 approaches, but doesn’t exceed, the fragile line between phone and ‘phablet’. It is still one-hand friendly (if you have normal to large size hands). Also, the screen boasts a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and has all those bright colours we’ve come to expect from Super AMOLED displays. ALI DRIVER SAYS THAT

“The Jaguar XF brings a touch of British class to the mid-size executive saloon segment, but will that be enough?”

Our Mystery Motoring Expert, Ali Driver, takes Jaguar’s sports saloon for a spin I really don’t envy the Jaguar XF. To say it has stiff competition would be akin to saying summers in the Gulf get a bit warm. It’s up against the likes of the Audi A5 and A6, the BMW 5 Series, and the Mercedes E Class, all of which are well established models in this segment. The XF was brought in to replace the Jaguar S-Type in 2007, and represented one of the biggest disappointments in my career as a motoring journalist. This is because they built up a massive hype around this new model with the concept it was based on, the C-XF. This 46

FACT BAHRAIN JUNE

concept was an absolute work of art – smooth flowing lines of brilliant silver flowing back from a front fascia that looked like a predator ready to pounce. Which is why, when the actual production model XF was unveiled in 2007, I stood aghast. It didn’t look anything like the bloody concept! Sure, the general shape was there, but it had been completely toned down, and the front lights, with their little round curve on the top, looked less like predator than prey – a rabbit caught in the headlights. Thankfully, this second generation

is the car that the XF should always have been, reverting much more to the original styling of the C-XF. The general size and shape are the same, but somehow the car manages to look 100% better simply through the facelift that put it more in line with the original concept. So, having established that the new XF is better, now we can get down to the nitty-gritty. The model I took out was the entry-level Luxury model, which is powered by Jaguar’s smallest engine, the 2.0l turbocharged inline four-cylinder. Interestingly, though, thanks to the turbo this engine puts

TECHNOLOGY

out more power than the previous generation 3.0l engine, at 241hp and 340Nm of torque, but actually consumes less fuel. The dealership were keen for me to review this model, because anyone can be impressed by a sports saloon with a monstrous supercharged 5.0l V8 in it, but this entry-level model puts the XF within the means of many more people, and those are the people who Jaguar wants to buy the car. From a standstill, performance is relatively good. This model gets to 100km/h from standstill in 7.9 seconds, which isn’t exactly blistering. However, at higher speeds the power delivery is much better, and this is helped by the 8-speed auto, which helps to extract the most power from the engine at any given speed. You can tell that the gear ratios were designed for maximum overtaking ability rather than a blistering launch from a standing start. The experience is improved by smooth, fast gear changes that are barely noticeable under normal driving conditions. Ride comfort is, as you’d expect, fantastic, and the car handles just as well as you’d expect from a premium sports sedan, largely thanks to the JaguarDrive Control traction control system. The interior is a lovely place to be, with soft, comfortable leather seats and lashings of leather trim. The lines on the dashboard are simple, clean and stylish, if a little utilitarian, though the wood panelling, leather padding and chrome finishes give everything a truly premium feel. u

The smooth curves and lines of the XF, not to mention those twin exhausts, really scream sports saloon!

FACT BAHRAIN JUNE

47

TECHNOLOGY

This is the car the XF should always have been, looking much more like the original concept.

It’s the little details that stand out and give the Jaguar XF a character of its very own.

The infotainment system is simple, straightforward and easy to use, controlled through the 7-inch colour touchscreen display, where you can select the stereo, the navigation controls, and also manage all the car settings. The gear selector is perhaps the most novel touch – it’s a circular dial that raises up out of the centre console when you start the car, and then slips back down into is when you switch it off again. It’s touches like that that are perhaps what I like most about the Jaguar XF. It has a character all of its own, and provides a refreshing alternative to the current list of established names in the premium executive saloon segment. However, while I did enjoy the Jaguar, and found absolutely nothing to fault with the 2.0l turbo engine, there was one nagging thought buzzing round and round in my head the whole time I drove it, and this was: “Why, oh why couldn’t they give me the 5.0l supercharged V8 model?!!” Now THAT would’ve been a hoot! n 48

I’ve been hankering for a go in the Genesis Coupe for quite a while now. I was a big fan of the old Hyundai Coupe (known to many as the Tiburon), which was a sporty little front-wheel-drive coupe that was enormous fun to drive. This was replaced by the Genesis Coupe in 2008, which changed the format of the car from a front-engine, front-wheel-drive car to a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, which has made it a whole lot more popular amongst driving enthusiasts. However, being rear-wheel-drive, it now comes up against a series of well-established rivals, namely the Ford Mustang in the States and the Nissan 350Z and the more recent Toyota 86 from Japan. In order to compete in this small but competitive segment, the Genesis Coupe had a lot of criteria to satisfy. It’s a segment that is driven by desire over practicality, so it has to look good and tug at the heartstrings of potential buyers. It has to have an interior that is both comfortable, and well appointed enough to keep up with the competition. It has to be affordable if it doesn’t want to be attempting to mix it up with more premium models like the BMW 335i Coupe and the Infiniti G37 Coupe. And, most importantly of all, it has to be fun to drive, and that means power and performance.

The style of this new model is a real improvement on the previous generation. 50

ALI DRIVER SAYS THAT

“I challenge anyone to not have fun in the Hyundai Genesis Coupe! Go on, try it. I bet you can’t…” Our Mystery Motoring Expert, Ali Driver, enjoyed the Genesis Coupe more and more the longer he drove it! So, Question 1: Does it look good? Well, see for yourself. I, for one, am totally sold! The previous model was attractive, if a little bland. This new incarnation, however, takes the old model and adds no small element of exotic to it thanks to that aggressive new front fascia with that gaping grille and those hood inlets. The interior, though not the most stylish I’ve ever seen, is by no means ugly, with leather trim on the seats and steering wheel and a padded dash lending it a

mildly premium touch. On the steeringwheel mounted controls you’ll find the buttons for your phone’s Bluetooth connection as well as the cruise control and stereo volume control. On the centre console, there’s a sliding panel that reveals the connections for the auxiliary jack and the USB behind it. This is in addition to the 6-CD stereo system that comes with the car.

TECHNOLOGY

A very nice touch is the centre console three-gauge cluster that displays the mpg, the oil temperature and, perhaps most attractively to boy racers, the available torque. The Genesis Coupe comes with front and back seats. The front sports seats come in a choice of full or half-leather, and are comfortable and figure-hugging. The back seats, however, are a simple ‘no’ for anyone over five-and-a-half feet tall! Question 2: Is it affordable? This particular Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which is the Lambda 3.8 V6 GDi model, and the only one you can buy here, is priced at BD13,000, which seems pretty affordable compared to models like the Infiniti G37 Coupe, which is nearer to twenty grand. This price does, however, put it in direct competition with the V6 Ford Mustang. Question 3: Is it fun to drive? The simple answer to this is: Yes, yes and YES! From the moment I climbed into it and put my foot down, I was enjoying this car. Consider that it’s a relatively small and light coupe with a 3.8l V6 engine putting out 342hp and 400Nm of torque, all for an affordable price. This is the Korean equivalent of a muscle car! The power delivery from the V6 is immense – turn the traction control off and hit the gas on a corner, and the back end is out before you can say “Tokyo drift”! This car was MADE for drifting. It boasts the right amount of power right where you need it, thanks to the eight-speed gearbox, and also a manual handbrake instead of the increasingly popular push-button electronic brake. There are no invasive traction control systems either. With many cars, even when you switch it off, the traction control system still interferes when you go full-on ‘hoonigan’. Not so with the Genesis Coupe – it’s either on, or it’s off. Even if you’re not into vaporising tyres, the handling and performance of the car are fantastic too, mainly thanks to that front strut and rear multilink suspension, as well as the 19-inch performance tyres. The ride comfort u FACT BAHRAIN JUNE

51

TECHNOLOGY

is a little bumpy, but that’s to be expected in a sports coupe like this. It is very fast, and very fun! Hyundai have added two gears to the automatic gearbox, making it an eight-speed. While this does mean that the engine speed always matches the car’s speed, it can sometimes feel like the car has too many gears to choose from, constantly shifting to match what you’re doing. For example, if you’re cruising in eighth gear, and suddenly floor it, the car has to drop three gears to provide the boost you’re after. It might not matter so much on a premium car with a DSG gearbox and split-second changes, but the Genesis Coupe doesn’t have that. This can be mitigated somewhat by going manual with the paddles on the steering wheel. However, these aren’t as crisp as they could be either, with a noticeable delay between the click and the actual shift. Another gripe is the lack of feedback from the steering – you don’t get much sense of what is happening on the road from the front wheels. However, it is nice and responsive, making it easy to put the front end where you want it to go. The Genesis Coupe is well on its way to becoming an iconic roadster, if it can just sort out a few issues. It would benefit massively from a DSG gearbox, and a little more feedback from the steering. However, I can’t help but feel I’m being a little harsh here, because a DSG gearbox is something found on premium-brand sports cars, and would add significantly to the price. This is something that could maybe happen in years to come, as the Genesis is established as a premium brand to be reckoned with, and they can therefore get away with charging more. In the meantime, at BD13,000, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe is an absolute BARGAIN! n

Who is Ali Driver?

This is a car that just begs to be driven like a hooligan!

1. He lives in Bahrain and says he grew up on the streets of Muharraq, but we think he’s actually from a rich family in Saar, and won’t admit it. 2. He says his car skills are all self-taught, but we’re sure we’ve seen a course certificate from the BIC on his wall.

A Legend In The Making Young, talented and determined are just three words to

describe 16-year-old Abdulla Al Thawadi. Not only has he

taken the karting scene by storm, in Bahrain and throughout

the region, he is also the first Bahraini athlete to have ever been chosen to represent Red Bull. Zara de Haldevang gets

an exclusive interview with the rising star to talk about his

inspirations, his experiences and his personal achievements. How and when did you get into karting?

It was when I was eight years old. My father was organising races in Bahrain at the time and it was then that I started to like the sport and start practicing. I then joined ‘The Unstoppabulls’ – the number one team in Bahrain – and it all took off from there! I am now a member of the Saudi Falcons Racing Team. Who was your inspiration?

Ayrton Senna. He was so dedicated to the sport and he was a great F1 driver (three-time F1 World Champion). His death during the race [May 1 1994] led to so many changes within the sport. How were you discovered?

It was while I was part of The Unstoppabulls team and taking part in a national championship here. I was first placed on a product placement programme and I have ultimately become the first Bahraini athlete (of this sport) to be discovered. 54

FACT BAHRAIN JUNE

How does it feel to represent Red Bull at such a young age?

Great! It is such a fantastic achievement. It feels so good to be part of such a huge, worldwide company and also to be representing Bahrain… I feel like I am making history. What are you most proud of?

I am proud of the person I have become. Many top drivers become egotistical… F1 drivers don’t have that. My goal is to be a role model for other people. Who is your role model?

Lewis Hamilton. He seems to overcome all of his problems and doesn’t let anything effect him… probably the best quality a driver can have. I have met him three times and he has such a good personality.

“I am proud of the person I have become. My goal is to be a role model for other people.”

What runs through your head when you are racing?

The podium and being first place. Even if I don’t achieve this goal, the main thing is to keep practicing, even if you lose. Although a small part of motor sports is based on luck, everything else is about practicing. What advice do you give to yourself?

To never give up.

What are your plans for the year?

I still have one year left at school but I will be representing Bahrain by taking part in the national and world championships. Hopefully, once I finish my studies I may go on to university in Dubai.

Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?

To be a Bahraini champion. If you look at people like Mark Webber, he started where I did. With dedication and time, I could be just as good as him. n

THE BOGGI FILES 58

FACT BAHRAIN JUNE

A taste of the traditional with a spin on modern day trends, Italian house Boggi offers clothes created to dress the man of today. Words by Dina Kabbani

Versatile yet classic, trendy yet unique, Boggi creates clothes for every occasion. This summer, the brand takes on an edgy approach with its new collection focusing on slim fit cuts, lightweight layers and timeless pieces. The colour palette is typically summery, consisting of bright blues, canary yellows, and geranium reds; good for those of us who want to stand out. You can channel preppy chic with a sporty jacket in this season’s must-have technical fabrics or go for one of their piquet polos (shirt style) in a myriad of oxford

hues. Also don’t forget to check out their newly-added denim piquet version – it’s an interesting twist on sophisticated sportswear. Summer begs for prints; they’re bright and fun and you’ll find that in Boggi’s selection of traditional ties. Colour reigns supreme with bolder and brighter shades than the usual back-to-basics tones. Their classic shirt has gotten a makeover as well with an extra fine yarn count added for a silky feel. Their designs come in ever-so trendy stripes or checks for the plaid crazy among us. If you’re an avid traveller (who isn’t?), don’t miss out on their travel-wear; a fantastic collection of outerwear made of water-repellent fabrics, characterised by iPad-sized pockets, document holders, and key rings. This season, whether it’s downtown classic or utilitarian

chic you prefer, it’s all about dressing up by dressing down. This makes Boggi’s old time classic two-button blazer one of the jackets of the moment, smoothly taking you from day chic to nighttime cool. The Italian brand have certainly taken the time to focus on every occasion and, Pietro Rizzi, product manager of Boggi in Milan says, “This is why man can be sure to be elegant everywhere in the world.” So whether you’re a prepster at heart and can’t do without your sportswear, an on-the-go business traveller or just a man who appreciates the fit of a well-cut suit, Boggi’s summer collection is a pretty safe choice for the smart and dapper modern man. A Homely Retreat

Home is the one true place we can call our own. We treasure it, design it, maintain it, live in it and, of course, love it. We look at @home’s upcoming collection to find out more about the latest trends and how they could inspire you to spruce up your very own sanctuary. There are two themes of @home’s brilliant new collection. One is entitled ‘Escapism’, and the other ‘Dark Indulgence’. When looking through the photographs, it isn’t hard to see why this brand 72

FACT BAHRAIN JUNE

should be a definite consideration for those of you looking to re-do the décor within your house. First up, let’s take a closer look at the first theme, Escapism. While we are all too familiar with the definition

of the word ‘escape’, the concept behind this idea is to make your home a retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the working world and consequently making it into a relaxing and calm environment.

Fashion In the home

Maybe you are looking to transform your house into a romantic, tranquil space that you can put your own stamp on, or perhaps you wish to make your house into a cocoon or a spa where you can reconnect with nature. Colours, which will live across the season, include a soft palette of naturals, duck egg, and grey plus a splash of coral and a deep burgundy. Light, warm woods inspire this particular theme as well as chalky surfaces, modern rustic meets modern vintage; contemporary florals; gentle ombres and whimsical tea parties. Second on the list is the concept of Dark Indulgence – a decadent sensual story with unusual tactile plush textiles including velvets and chenille’s. Things to look out for include embellished details and a colour palette of rich jewel tones set against ashen darks. Make sure you leave some space for the brushed and tarnished metallic’s and u

From vases to photo frames, candle holders to clocks, cosmetics to cushions, the smallest touches can sometimes have the largest effects in your household. Quilts and cashmere throws are back in this season, although perhaps just for decoration during the hotter months. 74

Little tidbits like the ultimate cupcake set, silly food tongs, coffee and tea holders and cookie cutters are just a few more things to brighten up your surfaces and drawers. From glasses to delicate mugs, even if you aren’t a kitchen fan, you will be once you take a look at the latest collection. n To buy @home, head to Seef Mall or call 1758 3910 for more information.

VENUE REVIEW Fiamma: Exclusive, comfortable and yummy!

VILLA MAMAS SAaR (Just opposite Saar Cinema) 1730 5031, PRICE: BD15 per person

We actually came across Villa Mamas by accident after giving one of the members of staff a lift when it was extraordinarily hot. Since then, however, it seems that this is a bustling little venue where seats are hard to come by, as we discovered annoyingly on two separate occasions. Set in an abandoned compound (in dire need of a revamp) is Villa Mamas. Opened in 2012 – or so we were told – this venue was the result of a continuous demand for traditional Bahraini produce, including local ingredients and much-loved recipes. Hungry and in need of a big meal, we set off to find out what all the Instagram hype was about and sample some of the dishes. Despite being ignored twice when we walked in, we found a table in the tranquil setting. Mood lighting and music – tick. The menu is extensive but for 78

someone who is lactose intolerant, it was a struggle to work out what exactly could and couldn’t be eaten. We opted for the Pumpkin Soup - which had a tiny post-kick but was lacking in flavour - and the Goat Cheese Puff made with sun-dried tomatoes, asparagus, mushrooms and rocket on a cloud of light pastry. It was actually delicious and the pastry was wonderfully light and fluffy. For the main course, we went for the Pepperoni lovers – a pizza with pepperoni and cheese on a thin crust [ THE BILL ] Pumpkin Soup BD2.5 Goat Cheese Puff BD3.5 Quinoa Salad BD4.5 Pepperoni Pizza BD5.2 Onion Rings BD1.5 Cookies & Cream Smoothie BD2.8 Perrier Water BD1.5 Still Water BD 1 TOTAL BD29.095

with Mama’s signature tomato sauce. What many chefs get SO wrong is that a pizza needs enough sauce to give it a high five... this pizza was perfectly lathered – double tick. Onion rings were optimistic (but still managed) and we also decided to try the Quinoa salad made with mixed vegetables and walnuts and sauced up with pomegranate molasses and a drizzle of evoo. The portion looked small but boy was it good, with an adequate crunch from the veg, a sweet kick from the fruit and the consistency of the quinoa. We even took our leftovers with us when we left! There was no chance pudding would fit, but no review is complete with a sample of something sweet. A Cookies & Cream Smoothie was ordered. Topped with fake whipped cream and fake chocolate sauce, it was a five year old’s heaven. Would we visit again? Yes. Would we recommend it? Yes. Biggest downfall? Slow service. n

Another dish to try is the Salade de crevettes a la mangue – a fresh green salad tossed with plump poached shrimp and a tangy lemon mayonnaise dressing. A more robust option is the Poulet roti aux amades – a tender almond-flavoured chicken breast with runny camembert cheese, potato puree, carrots, beans and a fruity raspberry sauce. DELISH!

Michael’s main focus is Japanese cuisine, though he includes dishes from across Far-East and South-East Asia in his repertoire, including Canton, Szechwan and South Korea. However, his deep love of Mediterranean, specifically Southern Italian, cuisine also

THE CHEFS TABLE

strongly influences his cooking. “People joke that if you bring too many flavours it ends up as con-fusion, but I think it’s just a case of finding the right marriage of each component,” says Michael. From an early age, Michael showed a love for cooking, which led him to choose a different path from most of his family. “All my family are scholars, but I took a different route. I might not be the most academic in my family, but I’ve had the most fun! I’ve travelled round the world, had some great mentors, and absorbed knowledge from renowned executive chefs, so at the end of the day I just put it all together, and here I am.” Michael originally came to Bahrain to open the highly popular Japanese restaurant Mirai. Once Mirai was firmly established, he left to join the Remza Group, and has since opened a total of six restaurants for them, including Café Spasso and Sushi 101, across the region. Meisei has been his latest pet project,

and arguably his most ambitious. “This group has really allowed me to spread my wings, and being in this leisure business has allowed me to travel and experience so many things and learn so much, about new religions, cultures and cuisines, new ingredients and flavours,” he says. First off on our Asian fusion culinary journey was the pan-seared sesame crusted tuna with homemade cherry tomato salsa. “Making the pan very hot, we sear the tuna in sesame oil, leaving the inside mostly raw,” explains Michael. “This locks in the flavour. The fish is seasoned with pink salt, coarse black pepper and sesame seeds which are toasted to bring the oils out.” Sprinkled over the tuna is a kind of vinaigrette with minced onions made from soya sauce, and some chopped spring onion. “The sauce is an Asian flavour which complements the tuna very well. Tuna is a tender, but quite bland fish, so we just want to add the tangy flavours to enhance the taste of the fish,” explains Michael. Next on the menu was a particular favourite of ours – the Peking Duck dim-sum in a balsamic coffee reduction. “I use this sauce because the Peking Duck is very rich and sweet, and so the tartness of the sauce goes well with it.” However, the next course really stole the show. This was a true fusion dish particular to Meisei – a Japanese-style pizza served on a croissant and sesame seed crust.

Croissant, you may ask? Trust us, it works very well. Michael gave us a half-half pizza, with one end topped with Kalbi-jim braised Korean beef, roasted pepper, mozzarella and capers, and the other half was a vegetarian topping of goats cheese, baby spinach, shallots and capers. The croissant base is prepared in a similar way to croissant pastry, in that the dough is rolled flat, spread with butter and the folded repeatedly to make a light, delicious and flaky base. The pizza was amazing – the toppings were extremely tasty and delicious, and the base was nice and light, making it one very rewarding snack! If you haven’t been to Meisei to sample the delights of Chef Michael’s kitchen yet, then we strongly recommend you do so. Meisei isn’t the most affordable restaurant in Bahrain, but quality like this doesn’t come cheap! n GO: Visit Meisei in Adliya’s Block 338 food quarter to experience this for yourself. HEALTH & WELLBEING

A

t Tribal Fitness we promote natural movement, food and living to optimize one’s health. This poses some challenges in the summer heat of Bahrain. If you’re staying in the Kingdom for the summer months, I would recommend the following steps to improve or maintain your health.

NATURAL MOVEMEnT “I want a beach body” is a common desire I hear around this time of year. A beach body may sound sweet but at Tribal Fitness this means you are conditioned and adaptable to the beach environment. Can you swim out of a rip or rescue a drowning child? If we forget the aesthetics for a second and focus on functional fitness, we learn that we need to be able to run through the sand, swim efficiently and move others from danger. Surf lifeguards have real beach bodies that perform an important job!

NATURAL FOOd The summer weather brings many regional fruits and vegetables to Bahrain. Take note of the fresh produce that is in season. These are typically lighter and non starchy. This is perfect for sweet and tasty family salads in the hot months.

DO THIs TRIBE • Enjoy the change in variety of regional produce. • Support the local farmer’s market in Budaiya Botanical Gardens until it finishes up!

DO THIs TRIBE NATURAL LIVInG

DO THIs TRIBE • Learn to swim or improve your efficiency with a swim coach. Abbey Fraser and Shirley Bissett are two quality swim coaches I know of on the island. • Go for a walk on the beach every day. If you can, do some sand sprints once per week.

The extreme heat can have many effects on one’s health. People can spend too much time indoors in the comfort of their air-conditioned house. This can result in sedentary living, dry skin due to dry air and a drop in critical vitamin D levels due to insufficient sunlight exposure. It’s common for people to get sick in the summer due to a drop in their immunity.

• Enjoy at least thirty minutes of sunlight exposure every day. This doesn’t sound like much but it makes a big difference to your health in many positive ways. • Avoid turning the air conditioning down to 16°. Do yourself and the planet a favor and moderate to 21°. • Buy a humidifier! To get involved with Tribal Fitness, check out www. tribalfitness.com o call Craig on 3947 3710.

Our Health Columnist is fitness guru Craig Heslop, Founder & Coach of Tribal Fitness, who believes that a more back-to-basics and natural approach to living is the key to a healthy lifestyle… It’s ironic that we live in one of the sunniest places on the planet and yet we have some of the highest rates of vitamin D deficiency. This has extremely negative impacts on our health. These vital vitamins, or more accurately, pro-hormones, regulate calcium absorption and therefore determine how strong our bones are. Is it just me or are more kids breaking their arms lately? Kids love climbing the monkey bars and inevitably they fall sometimes. A modern parent’s response to this is to remove the monkey bars. If these kids were to have their bloods taken, we would find that many of them have insufficient vitamin D levels, and this means weak bones. Do you have a goal to lose some extra body fat? If you live an indoor existence, you are making it incredibly difficult to shed that weight. Vitamin D plays an important role in controlling inflammation. An inflamed body is one that moves in pain and this is not Craig Heslop, productive for someone who Founder & Coach wants to move actively every of Tribal Fitness day. Sunlight exposure can be difficult in Bahrain’s summer so I would advise you to get up fifteen minutes earlier in the morning and get your free daily dosage. Your immune system is also heavily affected by vitamin D. Have you noticed that many people start to get sick at this time of year? Their immune system has been compromised. Although the importance of vitamin D has been well-published, more research is highlighting its critical importance to our immune systems. A geographic correlation study found that rates of incidence and death for certain cancers was more prevalent for those living in northern latitudes compared to those further south. The variable here was only sunlight exposure. For many generations in history, Bahrainis have respected the sun and worked alongside it. They worked outside in the morning and late afternoon, whilst avoiding the immense power of the mid-day sun. They did not have sunscreen or UV proof clothing. They simply used common sense. It’s about time we learned from our ancestors and started acknowledging the sun for it’s strength and health benefits. Mindful? Or is your

mind full?

Christal Dennis is a Personal Performance Coach and Hypnotherapist with a Masters in Psychology, Leadership Development and Coaching. She is dedicated to helping people overcome life’s hurdles and tapping in to their deepest potential... Mindfulness is a practice where through meditation one is able to achieve a state of peace and have a mind that is calm. In this fast-paced age most people live the opposite of mindfulness, which means that our minds are constantly busy thinking about things which we don’t even know are unnecessary and which in the long run saps our energy and causes us most of our suffering. Take a minute to notice what is happening in your mind right now. What you may find is that there is a litany of mental talk on all kinds of subjects mostly about what is happening in your life right now. Together with the mental talk you may find mental pictures. For example maybe yesterday you had an argument with a loved one or co-worker. Today you may find yourself going over that argument in your mind; maybe you make a mental picture of yourself speaking with that person. You could even start imagining what you would say to the person if you saw them next time. Notice what is happening in your body. All kinds of emotions are being stirred up in you. Maybe you feel sadness or anger. I don’t think peace or happiness are feelings you are experiencing at this time. The practice of Mindfulness has been found to be very helpful with the management of chronic pain. Most of us associate pain with suffering. With Mindfulness you learn to dissociate suffering from pain by going into the pain as opposed to resisting the pain. Suffering is caused by resistance to pain and grasping of pleasure. With mindfulness you create equanimity inside yourself where pain is reduced and pleasure is experienced more greatly. Mindfulness can improve your intelligence, focus, inspiration and satisfaction in life and so much more. Become mindful and discover the beauty in your life! n To find out more go to www.basicmindfulness.org.

Tips for a Healthy Summer! The arrival of summer means days at the pool, family picnics, boat trips and other outdoor activities. The following are some tips to protect you & your family in the warmer months... • Hydrate! Drink plenty of water before, during and after physical activity to avoid dehydration. For low-calorie flavour, add slices of your favourite fruits such as melon, oranges, berries or even cucumber or mint to a pitcher of water and refrigerate for 2 hours. • Protect your family from the sun: wear widebrimmed hats, always apply water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF15 and reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. Also try to avoid intense activities between noon and 3pm, when the sun is at its strongest. • Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Vegetables and fruits have many properties for protecting your health from cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and much more. By eating more vegetables and fruits you can give your body the vitamins and minerals it craves and protect your cells from the damage free radicals cause. • Many dangerous bacteria and viruses thrive in the summer months as the temperature is conducive for their growth. The bad bugs usually enter the body through food and water. This is why maintaining food hygiene is crucial this season.
