THE RIVA RACE

PROJECT WAKA BY

AMELS

The team behind the first AMELS 220, Project Waka, celebrated a significant milestone in her construction as the technical launch took place inside one of the covered drydocks at the AMELS yard, last month.

The AMELS project team celebrated the launch together with the Owner’s team, including Captain Paul Bickley and Antoine Larricq from Fraser Yachts, who also represented the Owner during the build.

“Now we are less than three months from delivery,” Mr Larricq said during the launch. “Everyone is really impressed how seamless this project has been. This is the result of all those hours of work and meetings, cutting materials, selecting marbles, and now we are right on schedule.”

The AMELS 220 is a timeless design by Tim Heywood, capturing the very best of the British designer’s much-loved exterior signature. The design draws on the pedigree of the original AMELS 212 yachts delivered to date but stands out with newly elongated decks plus a large 65-square metre Swim Platform and Beach Club (7,040 sqft).

Winch Design created a custom interior design for the Owner. Alongside seven suites, plus large indoor and outdoor socialising areas, totalling 1,150 square metres (12,300 sq ft), the AMELS 220 offers amenities for celebrations and hosting special guests with 7-star service. A surprising amount of storage, including the tender garage for two 8-metre tenders (27 ft), supports water sports, beach parties and journeys off the beaten track.

The ocean-going world traveller is proven for her performance and comfort, with a highly fuel-efficient full displacement hull form and energy recovery system on board.

CREATIVE CRAFTMANSHIP

CRN launched the M/Y 135, the new fully custom steel and aluminium megayacht. Over a thousand people were there to witness the occasion at an elegant private ceremony, where the majestic personality of this magnificent ship took centre stage.

At 79 metres long and with a beam of 13.50 metres, the M/Y 135 is a majestic yacht with real personality. Her sleek lines catch the eye, crisply emphasised by the smooth profile of her hull. She is the fruit of another successful collaboration between CRN and the architects Zuccon International Project, who took care of the external lines, and Laura Sessa, who designed the interiors.

With five decks accommodating 12 guests in five VIP cabins plus the owner’s suite and a 39-strong crew, the new 79-metre yacht by CRN is the fullest expression of the yard’s passion for excellence – the product of the masterly work of an accomplished team comprised of exceptional project managers, project architects, engineers, technical designers and specialist craftspeople. Nearly 200 consummate professionals contributed their vast experience to make this unique creation.

A mythological name, a futuristic design and extremely hi-tech on-board solutions. Steeped in magnetic beauty, the 90’ Argo is the latest fantastic Riva flybridge and it is preparing to take seas all over the world by storm, starting with America.

The streamlined, dynamic profile of this new work of contemporary nautical art was unveiled at the world première in Miami on 9 March.

With a length of 28.49 metres (93’6’’) and a beam of 6.50 metres (21’4’’), the Riva 90’ Argo combines and enhances the strengths of its two Riva predecessors, the 100’ Corsaro and 110’ Dolcevita, while revealing its own distinctive, enchanting personality. Once again, the ace in Riva’s sleeve with this new model is the instantly recognizable design, from the exterior to the numerous interior details.

“The Riva 90’ Argo is an exceptional flybridge that elicits a complementary blend of attention to detail and emotion. The sight of it alone is a spellbinding experience. Once you

are on board, you realize why the new Riva flybridge generation is currently unrivalled,” commented Alberto Galassi, the Ferretti Group CEO. “We named it after the Argo, which was the vessel of the famous Argonauts and the first ever ship to sail the seas. It is also the Italian name for Argos, which is one of the largest cities in Greece. The new flybridge is a product of the partnership between Officina Italiana Design (the studio founded by designer Mauro Micheli together with Sergio Beretta) and the Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee

(headed by engineer Piero Ferrari) and Engineering Department. The aerodynamic qualities of the profile are highlighted by a number of distinctive exterior design features, such as the large hull windows, the long, fullheight glazed windows on the deck and the aft lateral structures with glass surfaces.

Once again, Riva has shown its capacity to innovate with a model that perfectly encapsulates quintessential Italian nautical know-how, with aesthetic appeal and superlative traits worthy of a contemporary legend.

GULF CRAFT’S MAJESTY 175

It is history in the making for Gulf Craft as work on its first mega yacht progresses swiftly. The shipyard revealed the on-going work of art during a tour of its state-of-the-art facility.

Impressed by the masterpiece and choice of materials used onboard, the journalists got a chance to meet the design team involved in this triumph of craftsmanship. Scheduled for delivery by the end of 2019, the tri-deck 490-tonne mega yacht will have trans-Atlantic capability and over 4,000 nautical miles range.

The Majesty 175 will be the largest mega yacht in the world to be built fully as a Commercial Yacht over 500 GT (gross tons) using advanced composite materials and certified in full compliance with the MCA LY3 Code.

The magnificent Majesty 175 is being developed in collaboration with the renowned Italian Naval Architect Massimo Gregory from Yankee Delta Design Studio based in Milan. Her exterior styling and interior design are the works of the famous Italian designer, Christian Gatto. There’s emphasis on substantial lounging and entertainment areas, highlighted by a beach club aft.

A voluminous design expertly incorporates a sevencabin layout. It features a private owner’s suite on the upper deck and VIP accommodation on the main deck. Enlarged windows and increased levels of light create a modern ambience throughout the yacht and ensure full interaction with the outside environment.

The generous pool on the foredeck and a jacuzzi at the back of the upper deck further reinforce the uniqueness of the Majesty 175.

Gulf Craft is currently exhibiting at the Dubai Boat Show where it has revealed 6 new yachts and boats from its Nomad Yachts, Oryx and Silvercraft brands.

THE ART OF PLANING

A feast for the eyes and a pleasure for those who will be onboard at sea, Custom Line 120’ bursts onto the nautical scene with the explosive force of new innovations that will leave a memorable impression.

The newest member of the brand’s planing line reimagines and combines stylistic elements from automotive design and residential architecture, with the addition of in-depth research aimed at enhancing the shapes and volumes. Produced in collaboration with the Ferretti Group Strategic Product Committee, headed by engineer Piero Ferrari, and the Engineering Department, it is the first Custom Line yacht to bear the signature of Francesco Paszkowski Design.

EXTERIOR DESIGN GOALS

The design proposes an aesthetic standard based on perfectly clean lines and forms, which created a coherent unity between the exterior and interior design. The profile is sleek and powerful: taut lines run from stern to bow, creating a spectacular alternation of materials and colours in the light structural surfaces and dark tinted windows.

The hull windows are large and generous, and floor-to-ceiling windows on the main deck offer direct contact with the sea, thanks to pulpits that take the place of the traditional gunwales. The side windows on the flybridge make it possible to have a well-sheltered panoramic sun deck.

COCKPIT AND MAIN DECK INTERIORS

The cockpit features an innovative glass door that gives access to the lounge. It is inclined at a 45° angle and, in addition to the usual slide opening of the two glass panels, it has a tilting mechanism so that it can be raised completely up to insert into the ceiling. Another outstanding innovation is the elevation of the lounge floor, which uses a floating floor to provide an unparalleled view of the sea. The design is inspired by the tenets of luxury

residential interior design and proposes, among other elements: it support columns that incorporate lighting, audio, and air-conditioning systems and the large central lounge, fitted with wide, tall side windows that create an effect of greater continuity with the sea.

Beyond the formal dining zone, the lobby gives access onto the walkway through a large glass door, as well as belowdecks and to the master suite. From the opposite wall, there is access to the pantry – also reachable from the outside – and then the galley, from which the crew quarters below can be reached.

The pantry also gives access to the navigation bridge. Here, the captain can use the LOOP integrated bridge system created in conjunction with Naviop-Simrad, which has touchscreens installed seamlessly into the dashboard, creating a single direct interface with the ship functions and enabling total control.

The wide body owner’s suite of over 35 sqm is outfitted with a separate dressing room and full beam bathroom with dual facilities, vanity, and a central shower. On request, the owner can also have a panoramic terrace installed.

LOWER DECK

There are four guest cabins on the lower deck. The two VIP cabins astern feature a special arrangement of the beds, which face the bulwark to make the most of the view from the large hull windows. The two forward cabins have single beds, to which a pullman bed can be added. All the cabins have an ensuite bathroom with separate shower. The crew quarters forward include a large dinette, captain’s cabin with desk and private bathroom, a hostess cabin, and two double cabins for the sailors, all with private bathroom and separate shower.

EXTERNAL AREAS

The comfort of a flybridge and the sportiness of a coupé also blend wonderfully on the sun deck, a panoramic space to enjoy in complete privacy. It features a relaxation area with whirlpool tub and free-standing furniture, and can be protected from the sun thanks to a retractable bimini top in the hard top equipped with a skylight. An innovative concept enables a direct connection from the flybridge to the forward zone by means of lateral corridors with additional access from the monkey bridge. This feature makes it possible to have a single large deck of 100 sq m. Two sun pads at the sides of the walkway lead to the foredeck, furnished with a large dinette.

At the stern, the patented DMT - Dual Mode Transom system is implemented with the installation of two hatches that conceal the stairs to the cockpit when the ship is cruising, providing an exceptionally clean aesthetic. When the ship is stopped, the stairs pass through the garage door, allowing guests to climb aboard. From the garage, a tender of up to 5.65 meters and a three-person jet ski can be lowered into the water.

TECHNOLOGY AND PERFORMANCE

Custom Line 120’ installs a pair of MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines that generate 2,638 Mhp, allowing a cruising speed of 21 knots and top speed of 25 knots (preliminary data). The utmost attention has also been given to acoustic comfort in order to reduce the impact of engines and generators during navigation and at roadstead: Custom Line 120’ features a floating floor and supplementary thermal insulation between the bulkheads and in the ceilings.

Feadship has successfully completed the refit of the 24-metre motoryacht Caravelle, named after the line of classic beauties built by Feadship in the Sixties during a partnership with the legendary Italian designer Carlo Riva.

Having commissioned this year-long refit after falling in love with the yacht’s striking lines and vintage charm, the owners took the opportunity to also enhance her with 21stcentury creature comforts such as zero-speed stabilisation.

The seven Feadships launched between August 1961 and October 1965 under the Caravelle name have gained an iconic status amongst connoisseurs of Sixties maritime cool. Much admired at the time by clients such as beer magnate Freddie Heineken, these fast steel motoryachts were resolutely ahead of the curve. Always popular, rarely available, the Caravelles made global headlines again when Feadship totally rebuilt the fourth in the line, Serena, in 2010.

The latest refit was carried out for clients who were actively seeking a Caravelle of their own. The client was delighted when he discovered the fifth cruiser in the line, originally launched as Quien Sabe in 1965. She had been renamed Absolute by her then owners, who had extended the yacht by 1.5 metres to add a lazarette and folding swim platform. These changes did not negatively affect the design, which retained its beautiful soft body curves, charming blue hull, warm teak deck and gleaming chrome deck jewellery, captivating the current owners.

Renaming her Caravelle, the owners had the yacht shipped from the Mediterranean to the Feadship yard in Makkum for an extensive

refit designed to ensure she lasts at least another half a century. The work included completely stripping and rebuilding the engine room and the installation of no less than four RotorSwing at-anchor stabilisers. In addition, the hull was repainted and the interior and systems completely upgraded to meet the full scope of Feadship’s exacting standards. www.feadship.nl

Ferrari is a brand that is continuously seeking not only to improve on previous models, but to contribute something remarkable to the upper echelons of the Sports Car segment. We at Hadag have been most fortunate to test drive various Sports Cars over the years including a few Ferraris such as the Ferrari Portofino and the GTC4Lusso T. However, we had never gotten the chance, up until now, to get behind the wheel of a car that has the term “Superfast” in its name. Thanks to the amazing team at Ferrari Bahrain, we were provided with the opportunity to give the 2019 Ferrari 812 Superfast a thorough examination as well as to put it through its paces.

We were immediately impressed by the sheer presence of this immaculately designed vehicle. In truth, we felt a touch of intimidation as we approached this futuristic looking creation. The 812 Superfast has a fastback sleekness to it. With a high tail boasting an aggressive spoiler, downforce is guaranteed. In fact, every aspect of the exterior has been meticulously calculated to ensure the ultimate in aerodynamic perfection. Sharply slanted crease lines running along the car’s flanks, along with the muscular wheel arches imbue this Ferrari with the power and aggression warranted by its imposing V12 engine. The Full LED headlights integrated into the design of the sculpted air intakes on the bonnet, accentuate the front muscle, integrating with and wrapping around the front wheel arch. Staring at the vehicle front on, it looked as if it was smiling mischievously at us, daring us to get in and drive.

Not needing a second invitation, we were soon sitting inside the cabin, quietly taking in the interior in all of its glory. The master designers at Ferrari have managed to create a picture-perfect space, filled with materials of the highest quality, that never felt overstated. A difficult balance to achieve. All of the elements of the driver’s zone including the steering wheel, its commands and the satellite pods on either side, along with the interplay of volumes and contrasting materials, combine to create an extreme cockpit in which all of the elements are angled towards the driver. The ergonomic design of the seats ensures not only the utmost comfortability, but also a sense of power as one feels perfectly positioned to take full control of the driving experience.

As soon as we started her up, the 812 let out the kind of roar one would hope to hear coming from the engine of their V12 Sports Car. This model houses the most powerful road-going engine in the marque’s history, whilst at the same time boasting a large reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. The Superfast’s engine has an overall displacement of 6496 cc and a maximum torque of 718 Nm at 7000 rpm. There are few cars that can offer the type of power and precision provided by the 812. As soon as we touched foot to pedal, we felt ourselves launching forward at such an incredible rate, it was almost impossible not to hold our collective breath. This mechanical beast can bullet from 0 – 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds! It was at that moment we realised the Superfast is not just a fancy name, it is a statement. Despite this vehicle housing more power and speed than most would ever require, its remarkable handling, grip and breaking system gives the driver a strong sense of control. For a moment, we had an inkling of how Sebastian Vettel must feel over the weekends. By the time we arrived back at Ferrari Bahrain, we were almost overloaded by the brilliance of the experience.

From the first moment we laid eyes on the new Maserati Ghibli, we knew this was destined to be one special drive. The front end of the car was the first to greet us and it made quite the impression. The obverse bumper now incorporates a larger grille with a ‘sharknose’ profile and integrated chrome bars. This Alferi concept inspired concave grille adds a three-dimensional effect to the vehicle’s anterior and is a head turner on any road. The restyled air duct is now wider and more linear than previous models which accentuates the width of the car, giving the front a solid presence. The headlights have maintained the same contour and utilise BiXenon technology. The rear bumper has been elegantly redesigned and gives the new Ghibli a sharper look than its predecessors. a million dollars, the restyling contributes to a significant improvement in the car’s aerodynamic efficiency. Super slick! Once inside, this mechanical masterpiece continued to show off. The elegant interior boasts only the finest materials and craftsmanship. A six-way electric adjustable driver’s seat along with ample leg and head room for all occupants ensures a comfortable ride. The interior packaging incorporates 60/40 folding rear seats that can accommodate three people. This along with 500 litres of luggage capacity make this car practical for everyday use. A climatecontrolled central console compartment, large door pockets and an electrically lockable passenger glove box are other useful features. A large central console between the front seats features two cup holders, a 12V power socket, USB and aux-in sockets and a compartment for mobile phones. Practical luxury, anyone? The interior of this Maserati is built around an intuitive, user-friendly driver interface. The central console incorporates the driving modes’ buttons alongside the gearshift. Other on-board settings can be adjusted via the Maserati Touch Control Plus (MTC+) at the centre of the dashboard, or on the steering wheel controls for the 7” TFT display. The infotainment system of the Ghibli, is based on a high resolution 8.4” capacitive touch screen and offers compatibility with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto mirroring functions. The central lower console’s rotary knob is a high quality forged aluminium component offering intuitive control of

audio volume and other infotainment system functions. As we started to fully appreciate all of the details that have so lovingly been put into the design of this car, it was time for us to get out on the road.

The sound of a petrol 600 V6, Twin-Turbo –direct injection GDI engine is enough to put an instant smile on anyone’s face. In truth, we were not expecting the kind of power we felt as we eased down on the accelerator. With a displacement of 2979cc’s and 2250 Nm of Torque, this car is no toy! Bulleting from 0-100 km/h in only 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 267 km/h, we could only chucckle as we felt our bodies pressing back against our seats. Complete with an 8-speed ZF automatic AT8 – HP70 gearbox, the Ghibli effortlessly eats up any road put in front of it whilst giving one a sense of full control thanks to the abundance of grip and handling on offer. This is one fun car to drive – and looks stunning too!

For authentic Indian teas, Boulevard Tea House provides that and more in a cosy setting. Fresh coffee, dainty desserts and pastries can be found at Café One, the hotel’s deli. Amwaj Lounge, the hotel’s luxury living room, sets the scene with a selection of French pastries and afternoon tea prepared by the hotel’s team of French chefs, Executive Chef Guillaume Joly and Executive Pastry Chef Gregory Legros. Breakfast is located in The Kitchen Restaurant with a HUGE selection of savoury and sweet options, it’s one of the largest in Muscat and one of the best we’ve encountered at a 5-star hotel. We enjoyed a fabulous dinner in Bukhara Restaurant with very tasty North Indian cuisine and a great atmosphere. The quality of the food was topnotch and we’d highly recommend trying the Omani lobster – delicious. Lunch at Soi Soi is a gorgeous reminder of our time in Thailand – where we indulged in Thai Street Food – it’s casual and full of favours, but also very wellpriced. Our last visit was Zale and let us tell you this – it’s like heaven on earth. With a lush outdoor ambiance, a local band playing hits by Pink Floyd and Gary Moore to name but a few, and, of course, stunning cuisine to whet our appetites.

THE ISLAND ESCAPADE

Nothing intrigues us more than a quick getaway that is just a hop, skip and jump away. This month, Hadag’s Anushay Taimur Khan visits a little piece of paradise that we all know and love as Banana Island Resort by Anantara…

anana Island has its reputation around the region as one of the best luxury resorts with high expectations and a heavier backpack, I set off to experience my Banana journey. The minute I arrived at the reception on the corniche, I knew exactly why this place gas rave reviews. I was treated like royalty as my luggage was taken and I was given a room within 10 minutes. The reception was a trailer of the beauty that the Island was and I was already relaxing for my mini escape from busy life.

We were escorted to our boat, which was nothing less than a business class trip, and reached the Island within 30 minutes. We were received with a man playing the bongos and I just know that this is the way I want to be welcomed everywhere in life! The grandeur reception of the hotel made me stop for a minute and take everything in; clear blue water reflected the warm sun of the pleasant weather, welcoming staff was ready to receive us and finally, within the first 10 minutes, I was escorted to my sea view room. My bedroom was a story of its own. Giving a very modern yet cultural look, the bathroom space was enough to have a mini party in. I had all my accessories available, including a blow dryer I had conveniently forgotten and the basic necessities already stacked there. My room had a small seating arrangement on the right and a tub (YES, A TUB!) on the left side, right next to the window. I believe it was placed perfectly so you can draw yourself a bath and enjoy the beautiful views of the sea. A porch welcomed me for my sunsets on the island with a light breeze and I cannot begin to tell you how serene the entire setting was. Upon my request, the room was situated right in front of the children’s play area so, we took a dive right into the cool water. The entire area was designated to families, making Banana Island the ideal escape for the weekend. The area wasn’t too crowded and I took my sweet time for a much-needed tan. Shortly after, we were welcomed at the Q Lounge for lunch which was right next to the pool. Some warm food by the poolside in the magical weather – who can say no to that? It was a pretty decent way to begin the week if you ask me. Q Lounge is normally popular for their biryani;

however, I chose to play it safe and settled for a club sandwich, which was delightful. After dipping my feet in the warm pool for a while and enjoying the picturesque beauty of my surroundings, I headed for the Moroccan Hammam.

One of the best things about Banana Island is the way they spoil you. I was there to completely become another version of Garfield the cat and, they made sure they delivered. I called myself a cart and was transported to the hammam immediately, where I was welcomed with tea, given my robe and asked to wait for someone to get me for my appointment. Right on the clock, I was received and the next one hour was a tale of 60 minutes in heaven for me. As this was my first experience at a hammam, I believe the benchmark has been set really high. A series of scrubs, oil for my hair and facial later, I sat in the sauna and exfoliated all the dead skin. Quite frankly, I could feel the difference in my skin and it was absolutely smooth. If you’re planning a day at the resort, I would highly recommend spoiling yourself with a Moroccan Hammam treatment. There were a lot of different activities around the Island which kept me busy; I got some time to catch a movie at the cosy theatre followed by some delicious Ouzi at Al Nahham. With the seating giving you a luxurious view of the skyline, Al Nahham is an experience you definitely need to be a part of. Since Banana Island has restaurants in all price ranges, Al Nahham can be found in the fine dining section. So, if you’re celebrating a special night, dine with a view to remember. Back in my room, I set up some light music as I enjoyed the spectacular breezy winds. My comfortable bed made sure I had a good night’s sleep as I was ready to dine like a Queen for breakfast. Azraq is truly an event set for royals. From their spectacular buffet for breakfast to dining outdoors, near the beach, I could not have asked for a better morning. I got my eggs made, fetched myself some fresh juice and enjoyed the freshly baked chocolate croissants. Azraq is definitely one of the reasons I will be coming back to Banana Island for a quick breakfast and dip in the water.

Soon after this, the lazy in me went for another round of sunbathing on the private beach and took some Bali-inspired pictures on the water swing. Truly, Banana Island lived up to the beauty that everyone promises it to be. It is a secluded island which is the ideal getaway from the bustle of Gulf life. With options in dining that fit any budget and entertainment including a bowling alley, a kid’s corner, and general water activities, you can spend days over here without needing to actually travel so far.

I enjoyed my last meal, which was a serving fit for two, and we simply sat through the silent breeze of the island. Will I be coming back?

Paul Smith’s spring/summer ’19 tailoring stands-out for its oversized shapes and bold check fabrics.

The relationship between Paul and his father, Harold, serves as the main point of inspiration for spring/summer ‘19. This is most apparent in a series of photo prints that makes direct use of Paul and Harold’s photographs. The idea is carried over into tailoring, where the mixing of 1950s and 1980s tailoring shapes serve as a reflection of the dialogue between the generations.

Exaggerated jacket shapes inspired by the 1980s stand out and create unique proportions. A new slim double- breasted jacket is constructed with a soft shoulder, a slimmer lapel and a low break. Another new jacket shape has strong shoulders and a straight side to create a bold and dramatic silhouette. These classic tailored pieces are matched with technical cycling jerseys and nylon layers nodding to the enduring legacy of stylist Ray Petri, who defined the iconic Buffalo aesthetic in the 1980s.

Tailoring fabric also continues to be important this season. Bold check patterns in muted colours take reference from John Lydon’s Public Image Ltd period, while continuing Paul Smith’s tradition of presenting innovative new takes on classic British tailoring cloth.

In addition to the recognisable fabrics, two new check-tailoring fabrics have been created exclusively for Paul Smith. The first is a navy base with a pink and red check design, while the second is a black base offset by a check pattern of grey and orange. ontaya is always popular for a memorable evening to romance a loved one or for any other special occasion. The restaurant is down near the front of the hotel looking over the pool, beach and palm trees. Its set amongst a series of floating pavilions, which gives a feeling of calm and a sense of holiday. The large floating pathway that leads to the restaurants front door gives a good treat of the decor to come. Large stone walls against smooth pools of water set the scene for a memorable dining experience. The inside area of the restaurant is just as pretty with lots of light and cute, booth-like seating areas and sleek, contemporary decor. Sontaya means ‘sunset’ in Thai and trust us, there is not better place to watch the sunset than the terrace here. The beautiful outdoor space is relaxed and ambient with picturesque views.

Sontaya offers Southeast Asian cuisine, and the menu has classics on offer as well as a choice of other interesting dishes to choose from. We are brought prawn crackers to nibble on that are served with a light curry coconut sauce. To start with, we choose the papaya salad and the chargrilled prawn satay. The papaya salad is fresh and light and served with long beans, dried shrimp, chestnuts, cherry tomatoes and chicken. It’s a great starter packed with flavour but is still very light. The tiger prawn satay dish was absolutely delicious with big plump prawns marinated in traditional herbs and spices, grilled to perfection, served with cucumber salad and homemade peanut sauce. Yum. You can also choose the chicken option with this dish but we love the satay sauce with the prize prawns and eat the entire dish with gusto.

Choosing the mains was tough as there were so many good things on offer but we ended up going for the Red Curry and the Pad Thai. The red curry was an excellent choice (we went with chicken) in a delicious red curry sauce with lychee, eggplant, cherry tomato and Thai basil. While Pad Thai can be a bit of a cliché order, this was no ordinary Pad Thai. We chose the dish to come as a combination of chicken and prawn with stir fried noodles in tamarind sauce with egg, beansprout, chives, fried tofu, wrapped in a super impressive egg net, accompanied with lime wedge and crushed peanut. Can you say wow? Both dishes really were stand out and it’s clear that Sontaya prides itself on presentation.

Sontaya really delivers an extraordinary charm and the staff are super sweet and attentive. You will not be disappointed with the food and the views and, of course, the food. El Sur is a beautiful space where staff are friendly and jovial and unafraid to provide recommendations. During the lunchtime that Hadag’s David Tapley visits, there is a distinct buzz on the terrace, as groups of friends gather over large dishes of paella and bountiful Spanish cheese boards. Get ready for a lesson in Spanish cuisine 101…

Restaurants like El Sur are here to appease our appetite for chorizo, Spanish tortilla and, of course, paella. Located just off the lobby of the luxurious Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort, El Sur’s interior offers a compact space that has been uplifted thanks to the clever use of mirrors and a living wall of verdant foliage, in an area that is also home to a rather well-stocked bar. Passing a free-standing sculpture of a bull waving a red flag created from tangled wires, we make a beeline for the outside terrace.

Wrapping around a portion of the hotel’s external façade, the terrace is a pleasant space of simple wooden furnishings and a pagoda-style ceiling strung with dozens of filament lightbulbs. A peek through the palm leaves offers diners superb views of the azure Arabian Gulf waters and the man-made marvel that is the Palm Jumeirah.

El Sur is obviously a popular spot that has attracted what appears to be a loyal following of regular patrons. A simple one-page menu presents the expected tapas favourites, including Iberian ham with brushed tomato bread, marinated olives and patatas bravas. We however are feeling much more ambitious and with El Sur’s premise revolving around traditional tapas with a contemporary twist,

we fully embrace the sharing small plates and order a number of dishes. Beginning with the avocado cannelloni with marinated tuna and gazpacho jelly, the dish is rather ambitious and comprises of what is essentially a tuna tartare wrapped in layers of cool avocado. The tuna is nicely seasoned and the avocado brings an undeniable textural element but we’re left uncertain regarding the gazpacho jelly. The seabass ceviche is another interesting choice, topped with passion fruit and accompanied by a raspberry sauce that adds vibrancy in terms of both visual and flavour.

Despite the modern approach to Spanish cuisine, we actually favour the more rustic dishes that really help to emphasise the feel of a trattoria that El Sur so freely promotes. The Iberian charcuterie selection showcases salchichon, lomo, jamon and chorizo and is an absolute delight, especially when paired with a glass of grape. The fiery patatas bravas remind us of summer trips to Barcelona where we spent many hours strolling along Las Ramblas and visiting the La Boqueria food market.

The paella though is the main draw and we would estimate the majority of our fellow diners ordered the popular rice dish that comes in five variations - chicken, vegetarian, mixed, seafood and negra (black). Following the lead of an adjacent table, we opt for the seafood paella which the staff are proud to inform us is “the best in Dubai.”

Adorned with large prawns and mussels, the preparation process is almost ritualistic with the large paella dish brought to the table where it is ‘scratched’ prior to serving. This elaborate process enables the caramelised rice found at the bottom of the pan to come to the forefront of what transpires to be a spectacular and flavoursome dish.

We may have overindulged in the savoury courses but this doesn’t stop us ordering a bag of churros to round out the meal. In our experience, good quality churros are difficult to come by and we’re often disappointed by an overly greasy dough. The churros at El Sur are made to order, meaning they arrive to the table piping hot and accompanied by lashings of chocolate sauce. With a crisp exterior and a soft interior the Spanish fiesta flair of this dessert is certainly present.

With so few Spanish dining options in the city and the region, El Sur specialises in a cuisine that is so often overlooked. With a wonderful terrace, a pleasant atmosphere and a collection of rustic and memorable dishes, El Sur should be on your list next time you’re in need of tantalising tapas!
