My favourite story this issue MAKE ME A SANDWICH! We are big foodies here at the office, so a month’s long review of tasting sandwich after sandwich to narrow down the top eight sandwiches in the capital was definitely a big hit amongst the FACT team. From reubens to BLTs to wraps, we’ve tried and tested all, and now it’s time to go on diet!

elcome to the souqs of Qatar. Here the air is rife with the sounds of shoppers getting lost in the magic and mystery of the charming arabesque markets. There are teapots and lamps on pavements, backstreet hagglers on every corner, and spice vendors popping out from the tiniest of shops. If you’re not paying attention, you could end up for hours in the labyrinthine maze of souqs, which is definitely what happened to us. This month we took to foot to bring you the A-Z guide on the markets and bazaars that line the Qatari streets. You’ll find (pages 28-34) where the best places are to buy everything from cheap Indian fabrics to cheesy memorabilia to take back home; it’s one crazy adventure for the senses as it is for one’s pockets. September comes baring gifts in the form of two huge events, a Cirque du Soleil show and Tom Jones performance; finally a much needed change from the quiet pace of last August! We decided to go backstage at Drallion (pages 20-23) to find out how its performers get fit before the big show. And if you’ve been following us on social media you’ll already know that we are giving away two tickets, so don’t forget to check out the feature for more information! shores of Doha on the 17th with his Praise & Blame tour, and we got to interview him (page 14). Find out what the knighted singer had to say. We go pop art crazy with the “Andy Warhol of Marrakech” Hassan Hajjaj as he takes us on a colourful tour of his new exhibition My Rock Stars: Volume 1 (pages 38-39). Our events calendar is also packed with loads of artsy stuff going on around town so get ready for a busy month ahead! (Pages 18-19) With the new season banging on the doors we put together a roundup of the mustknow trends from the fashion capitals of the world for a fall to fall in love with (pages 58-65). You’ll find everything you need here to update your new season wardrobe. Finally if you’re a foodie, just like we are, you’ll love our hunt for the top sandwiches in the capital (pages 72-73). Then on (pages74-75) we take our culinary taste buds to new heights of Haute Cuisine with our Chef ’s Table at dining hotspot IDAM for an unforgettable experience. We don’t know about you guys but we are so excited that this month is jam packed with so many cool things to do; after two months of hibernation we thinks it’s definitely about time. Time to get busy folks!

News from the FACT Penthouse We’re moving house! After a good two years located in Bank Street we have now moved locations and are ecstatic that we actually have windows that finally open! There’s no break at work like a few stolen minutes of day dreaming looking out on to the world below, wouldn’t you agree?!

If you haven’t heard of Abshar he’s our amazing photographer and the man who, on our quest to capture the very essence of Doha’s crazy souqs, was dragged around for hours in the scorching heat to get some really cool photos. September Tunes Natalie Silbert and Chass Guthrie of australian band lovelight are stealing the spotlight this month at doha hotspot dunes. head over for some good old soul and modern jazz!

How did your musical journeys start?

We’ve both been involved in music since a very young age. We learnt music during our school years and then we both studied music at university in Australia. How did you get your big break?

We spent years performing music in Melbourne, Australia with some great musicians and well established acts. This definitely gave us a chance to develop our skills and take us to the next level. In 2008 we relocated to London and recorded an album under the guise ‘Frequent People’. That experience led us to a top 10 release and touring with artists such as Sir Bob Geldof. How would you best describe the music you play?

We combine our love for great singer/songwriters and our love for pop culture to create our unique sound. We like to perform our own interpretations of songs, often with an R’n’B flair! Top or favourite venues you’ve ever played in?

We have been very fortunate to perform in many amazing venues. One of our favorites was in Hong Kong at a venue called Tott’s. It is a great supper club with spectacular views of the city. Top three things you want to try while you’re in Qatar?

We would love to do a safari weekend away to go sand dunning and camping. We have heard great things about the ‘singing sand dunes’ so we will definitely be planning a trip while we are here! 6

FACT September

Doha’s roads saw a crazy month last August with an unusually large number of accidents taking place. With every week witnessing a number of accident-related deaths and injuries one wonders what the measures being taken are concerning road safety. Let’s hope that something is enforced soon to slow down drivers and keep the capital accident free!

Pilates is safe and simple and is excellent for those who suffer from poor flexibility and bad posture. You’ll find that Wilson gives different levels for each position during the class, ensuring that beginners as well as people with injuries can keep up. So if you’re looking to treat your body, mind, and muscles then a Pilates class at the Ritz Carlton is definitely worth a go. GO: Classes are QR50 and need to be booked a day in advance. Can’t Believe It

Under Construction

We honestly can’t get to terms with how the entire city seems to be undergoing some sort of construction. With a lot of the roundabouts being transformed into traffic signals, the roads have been narrowed down leading to way more congestion than usual. Ashgal promises to complete all this by November, we just hope they stick to schedule!

THE DOHA MINUTE

“I am a very social person by nature, so it’s no wonder I work for a communications agency!” We’re an avid follower of her on Twitter where she cracks us up on a daily basis, so we decided to catch up with Brooke Reid to find out what brought her to the capital and what she loves about it. PROFILE Who: Brooke Reid Job: Business Development Director From: Australia Been in Doha: Just over five years What brought you to Doha?

I initially came for a short-term event contract with every intention of continuing on to London. Five years and many wonderful memories later I’ve found myself a fantastic job and formed life-long friendships. Tell us more about what you do…

I’m the Director of Business Development, which sees me meeting new people every day who represent various organisations in Qatar, and introducing them to Agency 222. What is your favourite place here?

It’s a tough call, but I’d have to say Souq Waqif. I love a place where you can go for a meal, get your shoes repaired and pick up a few local knick-knacks at the same time. I’ve lost many an hour wandering amongst the alleyways and buying things I never thought I needed. What are the things you love about the Qatari capital?

I grew up in a small coastal town in Australia where multiculturalism only went as far as going for a buffet at the local Chinese restaurant. On any given day in Doha you get to meet people from different nationalities and backgrounds. Describe your ideal day off here…

It’s been a very busy summer so I rejoice in a full day out of the office. I’d start with a session in the gym, before I’d head to the pool at the Four Seasons. It’s my home away from home and a few hours there can feel like a serious mini-break from the rush of daily life. 12

It’s Not Unusual Illustrious ladies man and superstar crooner Tom Jones hits the capital this month on his highly acclaimed Praise & Blame Tour.

This September, for the first time ever in Qatar, the award-winning artist will be performing his most recent album, one that has garnered him the best reviews his career has ever seen. We caught up with him in between his busy schedule to ask some star struck questions!

You’ve maintained a career of 50 years, and still keep putting out albums when you could have simply chosen to rehash your greatest hits and continue to play Vegas. But you didn’t. What’s behind your super drive?

I think it’s important to challenge yourself and try new things. Change is good, it keeps me on my toes!

What’s your audience been like in the Middle East? Are you feeling the love over here?

I’ve had some great shows in the Middle East and I really enjoy the people, they are so friendly and hospitable; I’m looking forward to coming back. What’s on your bucket list? Anything you wish to accomplish?

There’s always things left to accomplish, but writing them down feels like there’s a timer ready to go off! I’m always thankful for what comes my way and for any new experiences. What’s your all time favourite song that you never tire of singing?

There are so many! If you mean one of my own songs, I love ‘It’s Not Unusual’ because that was the song that started my career. But there’s also ‘Delilah’, ‘I will Never Fall In Love Again’ and ‘With These Hands’. What’s next for Sir Tom?

Keep healthy, keep performing; keep learning and recording and doing all the things that come in between.

The biggest act to hit the capital this year, Cirque du Soleil’s Dralion is finally in town. We at FACT decided to hit the scenes where all the magic takes place; you guessed it, backstage! NOTEWORTHY

WHO: Michael Ocampo TITLE: Head Coach IN CHARGE OF: Getting the performers in tiptop shape With ten years of coaching under his belt Michael Ocampo is not one to mess with. The Canadian native is responsible for the fitness of all of Drallion’s acrobatics, except for a group of Chinese, which he works with as supervisor. We were curious to find out how this man manages to keep an entire circus physically ready to perform so we stole a moment of his busy schedule and got him to spill the beans. How many hours do you train the artists? It definitely all depends. If we’re coming back from a tour break then it’ll be a few days of strict training up to a few hours. Some solo acts will need only 15 to 30 minutes a day, while group numbers take around an hour. We travel with workout equipment so it’s easy, we also have great conditioning programmes for the artists as well. Does the training differ right before a show? Not really. Take for example our workout routine here prior to Drallion: training is a maximum of two to three hours, otherwise there are individual warm-ups and exercise classes three to four times a week. Wow we thought it would take more than that?! The shows are already gruelling and physically demanding as it is, so they don’t really need to exert themselves too much. Oddly enough cardio is not a main focus for performers, the majority don’t enjoy it and do just the bare minimum to keep fit. Secret workout for your team? I give core strengthening and pilates classes, that’s exactly what the performers need. It’s fantastic for building the very essence of the body and really makes them stronger. We also have nutrition plans but most of these guys are pros; they don’t need anyone telling them what or how to eat, they know themselves too well!

“As an artist your body is your instrument, so don’t get caught up in only working out. Remember rest and nutrition go hand in hand with training” 22

FACT September

Daniel Desmarais / Francois Barbeau © 2011 Cirque du soleil

WHO: Lorant Markocsany TITLE: Aerial Artist/Coach IN CHARGE OF: Performing and strength & conditioning training Hungarian artist Lorant Markocsany has it all; he’s skilled and talented as a world-class aerialist and has also mastered the art of conditioning and strength training. With dual powers, he is a force to be reckoned with on stage as well as off of it. There seems to be two sides to you, tell us about the performer first? Before anything I am an artist. In Dralion, I perform aerial acrobatics in the air with straps, the aerial hoop and tissue. I have a duo aerial act called Pas deu Deux which is a languorous aerial dance that demands great feats of strength and flexibility. What about the coaching? A: I basically work with my co-cast members to reinforce their training programs by providing them with exercises they need to develop certain parts of their bodies. I also work closely with Ocampo and our PMED team creating programs to help out performers that need more strength or those returning from an injury. Tell us about the conditioning exercises... A: The training programs are very specific to each cast member. I (Lorant), personally like to do my tricks repeatedly in the air. This way I use mostly my personal body weight to gain my strength.

WHO: Marina Vorobyeva TITLE: Trampolinist Stars As: Little Buddha We got the workout scoop from the coach but what about the performers? How do they muscle through, get pumped up, and more importantly do they have fun while they do it? Who better to dish the dirt on fitness than the lovely Russian trampoline champion. Marina what’s the training like for the Cirque du Soleil team? At first it was pretty hardcore, I started back in Montreal so we used to train every single day for a few hours. Now thankfully it’s lessened up a lot. Before I was still getting into the gist of things, these days I train once or twice a week for an hour or two. A typical workout for you would be… I’m constantly attending Coach Michael’s pilates classes, they’re amazing! Especially an hour right before a show, it helps strengthen my muscles big time. But my passion is running. No matter what I always run in the morning for at least 30 minutes. Are you on any nutritional plan or diet? For me I eat whatever I want; I need the energy. I’m not going to go out though and have five ice creams, that’s just ridiculous. I’m lucky that I burn it all off so it doesn’t really matter if I gain a few pounds here or there, because after a few days of training it all disappears. What’s Marina’s typical day away from training? Most of the time I just don’t want to do anything (major chuckling in action), sometimes I just really need my day off and what better way to enjoy it then by relaxing?!

ROCK HALL of FAME

Hassan Hajjaj’s new solo show of photographs, titled My Rock Stars: Volume 1, is a pop loving artist’s homage to his very own and personal “rock stars”. This month the artist’s exhibition makes it way to the Virginia Commonwealth University on September 4, go check it out!

Known as the “Andy Warhol of Marrakech” Hajjaj is very much a child of the pop art generation. Born in the harbour town of Larache in the north of Morocco, he moved to London in the 70’s. School took a back burner when Hajjaj dropped out and a slew of dead-end jobs followed. “I became unemployed for about 5-6 years and this is where I started to get involved in the London scene.” Promoting clubs, dj’s, and bands led him to open an urban fashion shop called RAP with his wife Vanessa in Covent Garden where he started designing clothes, something that would

later influence his photography in a major way. When did Hajjaj find his way to photography and art then? “It was my first photo shoot in 1989 that I felt something, but then I didn’t see myself as an artist, it came much later in my life. I was always doing something creative though with the shop, clubs, fashion, design, art just came naturally after.” “My Rock Stars: Volume 1” was a labour of love, one that took 13 years in the making. Using the streets of Morocco, London, Paris and Kuwait as a background for his

popup studio, the artist has managed to create a series of portraits paying homage to all the unsung artists and personal inspirations in his life. He has taken this somewhat haute-couture street experiment and immortalized his muses, from musicians, fashion designers, dancers to singers, capoeira masters, and boxers, in a series of photos all inspired by traditional African portraiture from the 60s and 70s. “The idea of this body of work is to be able to show all these friends (my rock stars: like Hindi Zahra, Simo Lagnawe, Cobra Mansa, Hassan Hakmoun, Kezia Jones, Momo) what they do and where they come from and where they are living at the moment I take their pictures.” Much like Hajjaj’s personal exploration, the series examines the boundaries of cultural identity in an increasingly globalized society; the Coke and 7 Up can frames around his portraits symbolize a burgeoning import market. GO: My Rock Stars opens September 4 – October 24 at The Gallery at the VCU. For more information call 4402 0555 or visit www.qatar.vcu.edu

ART

A Deeper Connection This month at Katara Art Center British artist Rhys Himsworth will be exhibiting ‘Standalone Tools’, his second solo show in Qatar. In his latest work, Himsworth continues to explore the subjects of technological autonomy, surveillance and communicative media, elements that have been of inspiration to his work in recent years. This September the artist is transforming the galleries at the centre, creating a series of installations that spill out various live feeds of information physically on to the floor and sonically throughout the different spaces. As you walk throughout the rooms you can hear the humming and whirring of the different machines being echoed all around. The exhibit’s name, although meant for equipment and software that don’t require network connections to operate, takes on a different connotation from its meaning. Here Himsworth’s machines in contrast are all networked in some form to the web connecting to a wider community, while at the same time being totally isolated from any meaningful interaction. Take his piece “Civilization”; the artist took a set of DJ turntables and had them play through a computer, letting their mixing and scratching be determined by the flux of Wikipedia updates related two things: Kenneth Clarkes ‘Civilization’, and the computer game of the same title. Both 40

are linked by a Google search for the term “Civilization”, combining together high and low culture. Here one can view the culture of the manual vs. critical thinking and analysis, and knowledge vs. information. GO: Check out Standalone Tools which opens at the Katara Art Center on September 15 at 7pm. Visit www.kataraartcenter.com for more information

“At first hand, we’re confronted with the idea of information translated into a spatial experience. As you are led through the galleries, the artist’s sensibility and conceptual thinking and technology creates both intriguing and poetic installations.” Mayssa Fattouh

#WILLPOWER By WILL.I.AM

WHAT’S IT LIKE Having played a gargantuan role in pop music with his genre-bending band, The Black Eyed Peas, Will.I.Am’s yet to achieve the same level of success with a solo project. On #willpower, he returns to his unique style, incorporating futuristic twists and exceptional production (he even features the Czech Symphony Orchestra in some tracks!). The 18 club-ready tunes are self-written (wahey!) and Will has roped in his close pals Lil’ Wayne, Justin Bieber and Nicole

Scherzinger for some mutually beneficial hookups. The standout for us is the fresh-sounding “Getting’ Dumb” which features a naughty rap courtesy of South Korean girl-band 2NE1, and, surprisingly, “#thatPOWER” makes us think that the Biebs might actually have decent pop-soul pipes. Yes, he’s used a hashtag in the title, and yes, that’s somewhat cringeworthy. But, if you can get past the self-serving social media shout-out then this album makes for a feel-good funky record... wait for the sale!

By GABRIELLE APLIN

ALL THAT ECHOES By JOSH GROBAN

WHAT’S IT LIKE: TWO YEARS in the making, this is Armin Van Burren’s fifth studio album, and it seems that the DJ’s musical repertoire has certainly expanded, even if most of the tracks sound like a mish-mash of big dance names such as Alesso, Swedish House Mafia, and Avicii. Expect trance beats and etherial vocals in “Won’t Let You Go” and “Love Never Came”. There’s a real house sound in “Alone” and “Beautiful Life”, but we can’t help but think that Armin is not nearly as much as a genre chameleon as Tiesto. 42

FACT September

WHAT’S IT LIKE: FROM THE girl whose sweet voice seranaded millions in the John Lewis UK Christmas TV ads, comes this beautiful collection of tracks. It helps that Gabrielle is blessed with the softest of voices, filled with raw honesty and emotion, along with an incredible songwriting ability, which is best showcased in tracks like “Home”, “Human”, and “Evaporate”, with their wonderfully poetic lyrics, wrapped in full warm melodies. The record is neatly packaged with crystal-clear production too. She’s bringing the ‘borecore’ genre to the forefront of music and we love it!

WHAT’S IT LIKE: MADE UP of passionate lyrics, it’s hard not to get lost in the songs on this record. Josh Groban’s sixth studio album topped the billboard charts and with tracks like “Brave” and the dramatic ballad “False Alarms”, bringing to mind the yearning uplift of bands like U2 and OneRepublic, it’s easy to see why this record was a success. However, in some places it lacks the heart and feel of his older albums and what we want more of is the loud, roaring voice he once projected. It seems Josh’s real musical strengths are in his epic classical style.

The book will also make you look anew at the War on Terror and draw your own conclusions.

INFERNO By DAN BROWN

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: SET in the heart of Italy, Robert Langdon, Harvard professor of symbology, is drawn into a harrowing world centered on one of history’s most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces... Dante’s Inferno. Against this backdrop, Langdon battles a chilling rival and grapples with an ingenious riddle that pulls him into a world of classic art, secret passageways, and futuristic science. Drawing from Dante’s dark epic poem, Langdon races to find answers and decide whom to trust... before the world is irrevocably altered. WHAT’S IT LIKE: As with his earlier novels, The Lost Symbol, The Da Vinci Code, and Angels & Demons, Dan Brown masterfully fuses history, art, codes and symbols in this new thriller. The character of Robert Langdon is, once again, brilliant, clever and charismatic which really adds spark to this riveting story. This is Dan Brown in his element and at his best. Inferno is, handsdown, his highest-stakes novel to date... an edge-of-your-seat novel that you won’t be able to put down until the very end.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: IT’S 1971 and we’re in the Bahamas. Nazi death angel Ernst Hess is missing and presumed dead, but emerges alive on a hospital bed. Holocaust survivor Harry Levin believes Hess has been stopped from carrying out his life mission. But, soon enough, Harry is crossing continents, and putting his life in danger to destroy Hess once and for all. WHAT’S IT LIKE: Jaw-dropping, action-packed and darkly humorous, Back From The Dead is the dramatic conclusion to the story of two mortal enemies first introduced to readers in the book Voices Of The Dead. If suspense is what you’re after then you’re onto a winner with this one as each page leaves you wanting more. Peter Leonard strikes gold with this! Who doesn’t want to see this muscle-man fight alien predators?

RIDDICK D: DAVID TWOHY C: VIN DIESEL, KARL URBAN, KATEE SACKHOFF

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: Betrayed and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick fights for survival against an alien race of predators, while becoming stronger and dangerous than ever before. Bounty hunters from all over the galaxy soon descend on Riddick, who plans a vicious scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick will face-off with his past and a new breed of mercenaries, all before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction. 44

FACT September

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING: This is David Twohy’s third attempt at making audiences root for the nocturnally gifted anti-hero Riddick (Vin Diesel), and, we have to say, though the movie is a continuation of The Chronicles of Riddick, it certainly has enough plot details to stand alone. Far from the space opera-feel that it’s predecessor had, this storyline moves at a steady pace bringing the location and characters in and out as needed. Riddick also goes full-blown sci-fi with its production quality really stepping up to rival some of the biggest sci-fi flicks of the year. This includes the likes of Cloud Atlas, Pacific Rim, After Earth and Oblivion. Basically, the

movie has enough action-packed CGI and special effects to satisfy the midsummer “I wish to go to another universe” impulse. If that’s not enough then just look to the main star. Vin Diesel is a man who very obviously still believes in Riddick and you might just appreciate the action-filled sequences more knowing that he did a majority of his stunts himself, some of them being quite hardcore. To top that off, we sure do get more than a fair few moments to drool over Vin Diesel’s cool-guy poses and manmuscles, all while he’s throwing out gritty one-liners... win!

[ SYNOPSIS]

PRISONERS D: Denis Villeneuve C: Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Melissa Leo

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 is the fun-packed sequel featuring Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) and his friends, who are out to save the world from mutant food beasts like living pickles, hungry tacodiles, shrimpanzees and apple pie-thons. Flint’s famous machine is the cause of these foodanimal hybrids, and now he’s forced to walk away from his dream job, working at The Live Corp Company for his idol Chester V... One for the whole family!

INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 follows the haunted Lambert family who seek to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world. Expect to see inanimate objects move and ghosts puff in and out of the family home, all to the backdrop of the eerie lullaby “Row Row Row Your Boat”. If chills and thrills is what you’re after then this pretty much covers that!

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) is facing every parent’s worst nightmare. His six-year-old daughter, Anna, is missing, together with her young friend, Joy, and as minutes turn to hours, panic sets in. Knowing his child’s life is at stake, Keller has no choice but to take matters into his own hands. WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING: How far would you go to protect your child? A father frantically trying to find his young daughter who has gone missing - sounds all too much like what you might hear in the news, more frequently than not. That’s where the heart of this movie is, in showcasing real feelings and emotions, real relationships and the real bond between a parent and their child. We’ve been waiting a long time for a truly gripping crime drama, and by the looks of it, Prisoners will deliver... definite must-see.

THE FAMILY D: Luc Besson C: Robert De Niro, Dianna Agron, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tommy Lee Jones

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: As the saying goes, “old habits die hard” and that’s the case with the Manzoni family, a notorious mafia clan, who is relocated to Normandy, France under the witness protection program. Fitting in to their new lifestyle soon becomes challenging when all they want is to continue doing what they know best. WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING: This is a darkly funny movie with a somewhat believable plot. Let’s be honest, it’s exciting (and scary) to think that there are mafia families out in the real world, but what sets this one apart is the fact it’s headed by frontman Fred Manzoni (Robert De Niro), who only handles problems the “family” way... watch for chaos and laughs! CANON EOS M camera

As the last major camera manufacturer to take a stab at designing a compact interchangeable lens camera, Canon has had more than enough time to get it right. And with new EOS M it has done just that, hitting all the right spots required for a good CSC. The camera’s commitment to simplicity is found in its physical control layout, with buttons and dials kept to a minimum. It has a compact, magnesiumalloy body, and comes in four different colours - black, white, silver and red. And although it has no built-in flash, it comes with a hot shoe on the top plate and Multi Shot Noise Reduction, providing outstanding noise reduction while preserving precious detail in photos at high ISO speeds. Its Scene Intelligent Auto mode delivers expertly optimized photos and improved scene detection for amazing results when

shooting at night. For those looking to capture outstanding quality Full HD videos, the EOS M Digital Camera offers a number of advantages. With a large APS-C sized sensor, the camera is able to deliver shallow depth-of-field for achieving impressive cine-style results. We love its ability to capture clean, high-quality video, even when low-light conditions apply. The Canon EOS M is one of the most capable and easy to use CSCs we’ve tested, and it’ll keep both entry-level and more experienced users equally happy. Image quality is some of the best we’ve yet seen in a CSC and certainly a match for many DSLRs. Our only negative comment though is that AF speed and burst shooting could both be faster. That said, we fully expect to see Canon expand the EF-M range in the near future!

LAB TEST

Libratone Zipp Although not quite household name yet, Libratone is just a 30-person Danish company. With its roots in acclaimed Steinway Lyngdorf audio, this brand is hoping to change the face of portable speakers… literally. Starting with just ten employees and introducing the Lounge and Live AirPlay speakers in 2011, the company is now back with the new Zipp portable speaker. Watch out Bose and Jawbone because here we have a new technology called PlayDirect – a nifty newbie which has more bandwidth for streaming lossless audio. Better yet, the speakers don’t require a Wi-Fi access point. PlayDirect gives you the convenience of Bluetooth with the higher-quality audio and range associated with Wi-Fi, and that is a pretty good deal. The most visible design element of the Zipp speaker is a selection of colourful sleeves that zip into place. The ‘funky’ collection is available in black, pink and yellow, while the ‘classic’ consists of black, blue and red sleeves. A leather strap is a quirky yet necessary addition and somewhat useful when transporting

the 4-pound device. But don’t worry, it is the perfect size to fit in a shoulder bag or rucksack. When it comes down to the sound (which of course is the most important part) you are in for a treat. The 360-degree-firing Zipp fills the room better than any of its competitors. It offers an impressively low amount of stereo separation but does get very, very loud, with the first signs of distortion occurring at 90-95%. What’s more is that you can control the speakers through the iOS app. Keep an eye out for the battery life and control the volume through your phone. You can even change the mood and genre of the music being blasted. Now for everyone one of you who are running out to the shops to buy these now… wait one second. They only support iOS – so all you Nokia and Samsung and Windows phone owners would be wasting their money. However, despite this, it is worth downloading iTunes on your computer and buying these bads boys anyway.

Ali driver says...

“The Audi RS4 is a road-scorching supercar thinly disguised as a humble family station wagon…”

Our Mystery Motoring Expert, Ali Driver, is over the moon to finally have a go in an RS4! In Europe, this so-called family car will not fool anybody. The RS4 has been around since 1999 - long enough for almost anyone to know exactly what it is. In fact, the RS4 Avant (Audi’s name for an estate model) was the very first incarnation of the RS4, coming before the sedan model. Audi’s tradition of making mental station wagons stretches way back to the turbocharged Audi 100 and 200 Avants of the 1980s, which proved extremely popular. However, it was Audi’s first ‘RS’ badged car, the RS2 Avant, which was created with assistance from Porsche and shared some parts with the Porsche 911, that really established Audi as a manufacturer of practical but high-performance family cars. 52

FACT September

In Europe, these wagons are recognised as icons. However, in the Gulf, where estates are practically non-existent and notoriously unfashionable, many people will not see past the car’s misleading station wagon exterior. They’ll dismiss it as a boring family car that’s practical and spacious but anything other than fun. They’d be sorely mistaken! Upon closer inspection, the telltale signs on the RS4 are there. There are the flared wheel arches encompassing those big 19-inch alloy wheels. There is the lowered suspension, the sports body kit and those massive twin exhausts, not to mention the RS4 spoiler jutting out from the top of the rear windscreen. Then there is that iconic RS badge on the front, sides and

Who is Ali Driver?

1. He lives in Qatar and says he grew up on the streets of Doha, but we think he’s actually from a rich family.

2. He says his car skills are self-taught, but we’re sure we’ve seen a certificate from the Losail International Circuit on his wall.

rear of the car. Anyone who knows anything about cars will go all gooey inside whenever they see an RS badge on an Audi, and they’ll know that whatever the packaging, something glorious awaits you inside! In this case, what awaits you is a high-revving naturallyaspirated 4.2l V8, putting out 450hp and 430Nm of torque to the Quattro all-wheel-drive system via a seven-speed dualclutch automatic gearbox, resulting in a 0-100km/h time of just 4.7 seconds and a 250km/h-plus top speed. What awaits you, to put it quite simply, is probably the most mental experience you will ever have in a… (ahem)… “practical family station wagon!” I’ve been hankering for a go in an RS4 for years, literally! So, I was rather excited to finally have the chance to test it!

3. He drives cars better than anyone we know (but don’t ever tell him).

4. He claims to be able to change a regular car tyre in under four minutes, but we’re sure that’s only when his wife helps him.

And unlike most who will see this car in Qatar, I was not put off at all by the first impression of this nutty station wagon. The way the roofline tapers off towards the rear, and the sharply angled slope of the rear windscreen simply creates a sporty silhouette of a different kind, augmented by the RS4 roof spoiler. From the moment you start it and hear that delicious burble from the meaty V8, you know this is a car that means business. The one thing that excited me most about the RS4 was that instead of following the increasing industry trend towards turbocharged engines, which get more power out of a smaller motor for less fuel but lag in their delivery, they’ve stuck to the naturally-aspirated 4.2l V8, which promises a long, smooth and constant power delivery right through the range. FACT September

53

What this means is that, instead of a slight pause and a sudden explosion of power whenever you plant the accelerator, what you get instead is instantaneous throttle response, and a car that REALLY comes alive at 5000 revs, and you’ll have a whole lot of fun keeping it up there as well. The noise from the V8 is fantastic – a racy growl that you’ll never get tired of listening to. And the performance is absolutely phenomenal, even for an Audi. Due to some tweaks regarding materials used, more aluminium, and engine placement, there is now a more even weight distribution between front and rear, giving the RS4 superb balance. The absolute essence of this car’s appeal is thus: It’s a family station wagon that can fit five people and all their luggage in it, and a whole lot of cargo with the rear seats down as well, making it as practical as any CUV. However, when the wife and kids are at home, and all the shopping’s done, you can take the RS4 Avant for a drive, and you’ll completely forget that you’re in an estate – it really is that much fun to drive. The natural tendency in the Gulf is to gravitate towards a compact SUV if you want the space but aren’t bothered about going off road, but I’d take this car over a luxury sports crossover like an Infiniti FX37 S or a BMW X5 M any day!

This season toughen up and get in touch with your rebellious side as the anti-establishment look “punk” kicks off in full throttle. Bringing back a bit of the femme fatales of the Film Noir era, designers turned out a slew of nipped-waist coats and skirt-suits, all worthy of a Hitchcock blonde. Blouses and sweaters were loosely tucked into the waist while belts were cinched at the middle, creating an hourglass shape that is smart and superfeminine.

And with Chef Romain Meder at its helm, no wonder the place markets itself as Qatar’s most prestigious dining destination. “I have memories of my Grandfather who was a chef, but all I remember is the big white hat and bow he would wear not his food” Meder tells us as he explains his earliest recollections of how his passion for food started.

THE CHEFS TABLE

The talented French chef has done and seen quite a bit in his years, although quite young he has done it all: worked with Michelin-star chef Helene Darroze in Paris; landed the prestigious position of Sous-Chef at catering company “Potel& Chabot”; worked for Alain Ducasse at La Cour Jardin in France and SPOON des Iles restaurant in the One & Only Hotel Saint Geran. “I don’t know if I have the talent” he adds jokingly as we compliment him on an impressive resume.

Tonight we are being treated to the experience menu, one that was solely created to transport diners to new heights of Haute Cuisine. Excited we wait eagerly at our table, taking in the elegant surroundings of the contemporary monochrome interiors designed by the world renowned Philippe Starck. A bread trolley makes its way towards us baring freshly baked rolls of different sizes and textures. Three small ramekins of different dips are placed in front of us alongside orange and pepper infused butter and a spicy mango cocktail to start us off. Shortly after the mezza arrives; marinated bonite fish from the Arabian Gulf comes with a lemon gold caviar; a shellfish crustacean octopus salad; hot artichoke –saffron samboussek; and an iced tomato broth, crayfish and halloumi to wet the palette. The main star though is the chickpeas and lentils Harira. “This is our most popular dish, it never seems to fail and always evokes some sort of memory for our diners” Chef Romain adds as we finish up the gold leaf decorated dish. “The cuisine here can be described as contemporary French Mediterranean but designed with an Arabic twist.” For the middle course we are treated to a soft/crunchy Egyptian rice, brown and sticky with soft pieces of seafood. The pièce de résistance of IDAM follows: tender Camel, duck foie gras, black truffle and souffleed

potatoes. This is were you can taste a bit of Qatar and France together in one dish that is so typically local yet solely European in design. We are also treated to an equally delicious coast turbot chermoula-style, perfect for those who don’t like meat. The entire meal is washed down with a refreshing drink of white grape juice, tonic, iced tea and rose syrup. To end it all, dessert is a treat for the eyes just as it is for the palette with a beautiful fluffy date soufflé with a laban sorbet competing against a labne “Fontainebleau” and berries. GO: IDAM is open for dinner only from Wednesday – Sunday at 6:30pm to 10:30pm. Call 4422 4488 or email idam@qma.org.qa for more information and reservations

or this month’s venue review we thought it only fitting to continue our Big Souq Guide and try out one of the many cool restaurants that fill the bustling market. With its stonewall charm and old world allure Damasca, a Syrian hotspot in the souq, caught our eye. Offering a triple seating plan, one outside amidst the souq, the second indoors, and the final an upstairs balcony, one is spoilt for choice as where to enjoy their meal. Without a minute’s thought though we were hurrying up the stairs, past a big hall full of diners, to check out the balcony we had been eyeing from down on the street. The rooftop setting is a simple one: wooden couches offer comfortable seating with quaint floral pillows; brass lanterns hang loosely from the ceiling their glow warm and dim; and lush green plants fall over the sides of the balcony looking to escape to the streets below. There are big fans scattered around but the real treat is the advanced cooling AC system. With plastic panels closing in the place, it’s August and peak heat time, you’ll get to enjoy the great outdoors without even breaking a sweat! After endless hours getting lost in the 76

souq’s charming alleys we are famished and can’t wait to order. The menu is pretty big offering a real taste of Syria with traditional dishes oozing the Levantine flavours the country is so famous for. We decide on a few hot and cold mezza, two main dishes to share, and some grape and mint shisha. Puffing away on our hubbly bubbly it’s so nice to relax and enjoy views of the busy souq below; the rooftop is peaceful and relaxing yet

the constant movement down in the streets makes you feel like your still part of the action. Mezza set down on the table and a warm basket of bread to accompany, we dig in to the lovely spread. The hummus is nutty just how we like it, decorated with chickpeas and a splash of olive oil. Our order of pickles comes with an assortment of preserved vegetables from cucumbers to peppers, everyone quickly fishing out their favourite from the bunch. A small brown clay pot in the centre of the table opens up to reveal finger-sized sausages on top of crispy homemade fries that have become moist from soaking up the meaty juices. Alongside all this we have ordered a traditional fattoush salad and some grilled halloumi. The mains come right after. There’s a steaming plate of Shishbarak, a stew of yogurt and meat dumplings that comes with a side of white rice, and a Shish Taouk plate with cubes of barbequed chicken. The verdict: Half an hour later and plates half clean we give everything a nine out of ten. The chicken, a bit dry, was really the only let down!

FIFA President Sepp Blatter expects his executive committee to move the 2022 World Cup in Qatar from the scorching hot temperatures of summer. “I would be very much surprised, more than surprised, if the ExCo will not accept the principle you cannot play in summer in Qatar,” Blatter told press. Consultations would have to be made involving leagues, clubs, national associations and players before any decision is made, as the move will have a direct effect on the football calendar of the year. At the moment the tournament is set to take place in June and July scaring the international football community about player safety. Although the World Cup organising committee had said that airconditioning in the stadium would actually reduce the heat to a manageable 27 degrees, they have changed their minds and are now considering changing the World Cup timetable. We can only wait for October 3, where FIFA’s executive committee is set to meet in Zurich to discuss.

A business destination for those from out of town, the Crowne Plaza is the place to stay for those away on work trips. But up on the seventh floor, away from all the stress of the daily rut, is a safe haven for those wishing to escape. Past the pool and through a maze of long hallways is the hotel’s serene spa. Novi, my Balinese masseuse, greets me at the door and takes me to the women’s locker to change and have a quick shower before my massage. I’m being treated to an intense muscle release, the name sounds rather intimidating and I’m a bit scared of what’s in store next. Off to discover what’s lies ahead, I’m taken in to a beautifully dimmed room with light Asian music playing in the background. First off for the treatment is a foot massage; enveloped by a soft armchair I get cosy and let loose while my little feet get some muchneeded love. Finally I’m starting to get into this whole intense muscle 92

release thing! A few minutes later I’m face down on the massage bed and can’t wait for the rest of my body to feel the same way as my soles do. Novi starts off with some deep tissue techniques: kneading, pressure points, deep fictions and opening movements. Her hands are doing a double layering movement, running around my shoulders and arms to stimulate the blood circulation and warm my muscles. She uses a warm ginger and black pepper cream that smells absolutely heavenly. I can already feel my tight stressed, and over worked muscles loosen up; this is simply amazing. I love how the Distress Muscle massage oil and Distress Muscle Gel form Aromatherapy Associates that she uses goes from warm to warmer every time she applies it. Fifty minutes later and Novi has to ply me off the bed. I’m beyond relaxed and feel like I’ve just been on a stress-relieving journey like no other. This is definitely one spa worth the trip!!

It’s a paradise for shoppers, interesting for culture-seekers and an architectural haven for art and design. Words by Shabana Adam

AAMAL TRAVEL

Marrakech is a magical place to visit and here are some free things to do there: -Haggle for a bargain in the souks: Vibrant, loud and carrying the spirit of a traditional Arabic bazaar, the souks in Marrakech are an explosion of colour, smell, sounds and tastes. Walk the narrow streets where you can expect to find ornate Moroccanstyle lamps, cushions and rugs, or pick up a real-leather bag, a pair of baboushes (Moroccan slippers) or a djellaba (traditional dress), alongside many other souvenir ideas. -Visit Koutobia Mosque and Minaret: The stunning Koutobia Mosque is located in the southwest medina quarter of Marrakech and its 77-metre-high minaret with an intricate spire and orbs can be seen from miles around. The mosque is ornamented with curved windows, a band of ceramic inlay, pointed merlons, and decorative arches.

AL JABER TOURS AND TRAVELS

FACT September

Though non-Muslims are not allowed to visit inside the Mosque, it is worth strolling the large plaza and gardens around the building. -Marvel entertainers in Jemaa el Fna: Jemaa el Fna square is the place to go if you want to see what the locals get up to. Packed with food and drink stalls, serving delicious Moroccan dishes and fresh orange juice, as well as a host of entertainment including snake charmers, storytellers and belly dancers, this is the place to head for a cheap and cheerful cultural experience. -Relax in Arsat Moulay Abdeslam Cyber Park: If you’ve had a sensory overload and need a respite from the city bustle, then step into the Cyber Park and enjoy a bit of peace, queit and urban greenery. It’s very conveniently located, beautifully maintained and the parks lovely trees give the much needed shade from the hot Moroccan sun. You can also use free wifi here.
