Read all about the Bahrain Music Festival (p26) and the IGN Expo (p75) - both great events that will cater to everyone. And if that’s not enough, keep locked into our monthly calendar for all the best happenings in town (p30). Let me take this opportunity to say how proud I am of the whole FACT team and their hard work. A big thank you also goes out to all of you who have supported us over the years. The Fact Evolution

9/8/13 3:13 PM

FACT dates back six years, when the first issue hit shelves in August 2007. It was edgy and aimed to show a different, more gritty side of Bahrain. FACT was here to showcase the island’s best hangouts, events and cultural hotspots, as well as support local talent and the expat community. The magazine has since brought you exciting projects including Bahrain’s Top Model and the Citibank FACT dining awards, as well as all the lowdown on some of the best cultural events taking place in Bahrain. It has been an adventurous journey and the new look FACT will be trendsetting and cutting-edge, being your ultimate alternative source of information, advice and events happening in Bahrain. We hope you enjoy the new FACT from here on out...

Go Crazy For Candee Beach Candee Beach has become THE biggest party in town, flying the flag for all things fun, dance and having a great time! The next Candee Beach party is set for October 4, and promises to be bigger and better than ever! FACT caught up with DJ Gareth Stirling who will take to the decks, coming all the way from Club Space in Sharm el Sheikh! We talk to him about his favourite tunes, career highlights and what you can expect at the next Candee Beach bash‌

fact magazine

CHECK IT OUT Hi Gareth! What’s your earliest memory of being a DJ? I suppose it’s always been in my blood from an early age making mix tapes for school disco’s and house parties. But my first real DJ experience was playing for a friend’s 18th birthday - I caught the bug there and then. What do you look forward to the most at a party that you’re playing? The crowd is the first and foremost important thing. If you have an up for it crowd then you’re in for a good night. What expectations do you have for this Candee Beach party? I have heard nothing but amazing things about the Candee Beach parties - I’m very excited. A great club is one thing but a beach party of this scale is a whole different thing all together, there are not many places in the world you can get to do such events so it’s an honor to play at one. You’ve played some big parties - what has been your biggest crowd and proudest moment at a party? The highlight of my career so far has to be when I played for the DJ Mag top 100 venues tour alongside Gregori Klosman earlier this year at Space. I got to meet the guys who run the most influential dance music magazine in the world and to DJ at one of their events was just amazing. Who is the biggest DJ you’ve played alongside? Eric Morillo back in Manchester years ago, he was my idol. Your favourite old-skool track? Energy 52 – Café Del Mar, hands down favorite! What are you listening to at the moment? I listen to all kinds of stuff. I tend to just stick the radio on when I’m at home.

What is it about music that you love? There’s no better feeling than seeing thousands of people with their hands in the air going crazy to your set. These moments are just magic Who is your inspiration and why? Hardwell. He just keeps getting bigger and bigger each year without losing his artistic integrity, you have to respect that regardless of you’re taste in music. What keeps you excited about being a DJ? The way music and technology keeps evolving it is impossible to know everything in this industry so you have to keep learning, researching and listening otherwise you will get left behind. Any advice for young aspiring DJs? Work hard. Play less. You’ve been to Bahrain before – what do you think of the party scene here? Bahrain has a great vibe, a real nice mix of people, a very cosmopolitan feel to the place. I spent a great night here last year I still remember the hangover!! Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? Production, production, production.

Quote of the Month “We believe that protecting the Pearl Route is an excellent step as it helps preserve an important part of world history that no other country has.” Muharraq Municipal Area Councillor Ghazi Al Murbati on how important it is to preserve the historic and World heritage area known as ‘Pearl Route’ in Muharraq.

Fact Finds

Voyage to the British Isles Discover more of Bahrain with FACT FINDS – every month we’ll bring you our favourite eatery, activity or interesting find from around the island.

With most of the FACT team being British, this month we were super-excited about FACT FINDS. Trader Vic’s has launched its Voyage to the British Isles menu and we’re pleased to say that it’s a great representation of hearty, British cuisine. For starters we tried out both the breaded shrimps and the rocket salad. The shrimps came coated in a crispy, light batter and the portion size was generous – just how we like it! The rocket salad came lavished with beef bacon, stilton cheese and figs, dressed with raspberry vinaigrette. The

‘How can you be a vegetarian?’ The question everyone asks me... Cara’s Rant of the Month

So my first month in Bahrain brings Vegetarian Day, a day which I honestly didn’t think would be celebrated here with it being such a meat driven culture. That said, being a vegetarian means that this day of the year makes me very happy - I get to eat my favourite foods whilst encouraging my friends to do the same but also get all excited that there is actually a day to celebrate vegetarianism. Sadly, my bubble of happiness doesn’t last long before it is burst. ‘How can you be a 14.

combination of the sweet vinaigrette with the crispy bacon pieces and the creamy Stilton made for the perfect reflection salad. Now for the top players – the mains – they did not disappoint. The chicken and mushroom pie had a creamy interior, topped with the most delicious golden pastry. The lamb cobbler combined delicious, tender lamb pieces with a dumpling-style pastry. The star of the show was the cottage pie, which had us reminiscing about cold winter days nursed by wholesome and homely

comfort food. The minced meat was seasoned to perfection, whilst the mash potato melted in your mouth – we would go so far to say that it’s the best we’ve ever tasted! For the finale of the fantastic menu, we tried some classic British desserts; a perfectly-baked apple crumble, packed with sliced apples and a subtle cinnamon taste, and the sticky toffee pudding which had a lovely balance of moist texture and sticky toffee sauce. Now, Trader Vic’s officially has a brilliantly executed British-themed menu! GO: Available from October 15.

vegetarian?’ – the question that now makes my ears bleed I’ve heard it that often. Ever since becoming a vegetarian 12 years ago it’s the question that always follows when I tell someone I don’t eat meat. A meal without meat, to some, is verging on a crime. I utter the word vegetarian and the meat police arrive to arrest me for crimes against poultry. The reactions I get are truly fantastic (and ridiculous) ranging from dropped jaws to looks of disgust, but all will ask that one question. The funny thing is (and here is the big reveal!) I don’t eat meat because I don’t like it. So arrest me, taunt me, remain baffled – whatever, but if you do anything this month, just give vegetarianism a try, you might just like it! And if you’re a full time veggie, then keep flying the flag!

With internet access... With friends. Where has he been? That was literally ‘so’ 2012. Just like OSN running the ad for an Egyptian comedy show with the Gangnam egyptian style parody, it’s dated, infact its dead. It reminded me of YOLO (remember that?) that was ‘so’ march 2013. And lest we forget twerking, that was ‘so’ the third week of August 2013. Is it me or are fads/trends/ memes becoming less relevant in less time than ever? I remember Bahrain in 1999 was the year of ‘WASSUP!’ from the well known beverage commercial that ran in the states. That ad campaign (and related phrase) ran for 3 years - if that phrase hit Bahrain shores today, I’d give it a week... 16.

Hurray for Animal Rights

Bahraini authorities are putting their foot down and trying to stomp out the illegal import of endangered species such as the white tiger, cheetahs and lion cubs. It comes after illegal pet farms are at an all-time high, selling endangered animals for mass profits. We’re 100 per cent behind the cause as it means all these animals can be pulled out of poverty and given a better life!

Hate It

Rolex Robbery at BCC

A group of men broke into the Rolex store in Bahrain City Centre stealing over 80 of the super-expensive watches and taking down a security guard in the process. We hate stories like this, taking another person’s property is every shade of wrong, so we’re glad that police are said to have identified the men involved in the incident and are working to bring justice!

Dubai Bahraini street skater Faheem Al Balooshi is making a name for himself and his hobby! He’s taking street skating to the next level and has just been crowned the regional winner at the Sponsor Me Competition. If you’re an adrenaline junkie like Faheem then give this edgy sport a go! Bahraini Artist Debuts Colourful Collection Hala Al Khalifa Explores the Sea in New Exhibition

Being an artist demands you to be highly creative and produce intriguing and beautiful works, something Thajba Najeeb has perfected over the years. Her new collection truly is a work of art, using bright colours that catch the eye and capture the heart. When it came to her inspiration, she has taken elements from her Pakistani heritage to create a beautiful collection of paintings, which she will now put on show to the world for the first time. Her ‘Life in Progress’ collection caught the eye of the Capital Club, who is hosting her first exhibition. “We are delighted to support such a talented yet humble artist - Thajba’s authentic collection will be inspirational not just for our Members but the community at large,” said Shahnaz Pakravan, General Manager at the Capital Club, Bahrain. Everything from her personal experiences and insights, as well as her Pakistani roots has influenced her work. This is a colourful and exciting, yet personal collection of art. We’re incredibly eager to go and see Thajba’s work, so why not join us? GO: The ‘Life in Progress’ exhibition takes place at Skyline Lounge in Capital Club, Bahrain located on the 51st Floor, East Tower of Bahrain Financial Harbour. It’s on until October 18.

When it comes to the sea, the Gulf countries have a pretty close relationship with the waters; we’re surrounded by it! But it isn’t only this that inspired Hala Al Khalifa’s latest project. Her new collection, aptly named ‘Sea’, explores the legacy of pearl diving – something that holds significance for many Gulf families as it provided them with a lifeline. She has used this to create a very visual collection that acts as a memorial to ancestors who lost their lives at sea when partaking in this dangerous yet rich activity. Having grown up in Bahrain, this topic is something that lies very close to Hala’s heart, which is evident in this collection that consists of both installation and video. Her work promises to take the legacy of pearl diving to another level and reinvent previous conceptions. It sounds intriguing, so make sure you go and check it out! GO: ‘Sea’ will open at 7pm on October 27 at Bin Mattar House.

HALLOWEEN RECIPE Classic Candy Apples

Bahrain’s Buried Tales Bahrain is full of myth and legend (surprisingly!). This Halloween take a trip into the desert and discover the ghostly cave that used to be a prison cell back in the 1930s. The creepy interior with dry and dusty walls, the original door, and a few cobwebs thrown in, make the perfect setting for a scary get together. Especially as legend has it that a ghostly figure of a woman appears above the cell in the dead of night – we suspect she may be the relative of an inmate with some unfinished business! If you’re heading down to the beach for Halloween then look out for Bodriah, or

Halloween Fun Facts

The origin of Halloween dates back to an ancient pagan festival celebrated by Celtic people over 2,000 years ago called Samhain. People would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts and evil spirits.

Papa Darya, an angry mythical sea creature who is said to have destroyed a few ships in the Gulf Sea. So, when you’re partying under the stars, keep an eye on the waters it’s big and gruesome so you can’t miss it! They say things go bump in the night, but if this next spooky story is true then listen out for a ‘hee-haw’ on Halloween afternoon! The old tale of the half human/half donkey jinn (yes, you heard. It has a human face and body, and donkey legs!) is popular in Gulf societies to ward off children from going out in the hot sun at noon! Do you dare step out to face the hot-headed monster?!

The first Jack O’Lanterns were actually made from turnips. The word “witch” comes from the Old English wicce, meaning “wise woman.” Many people suffer from Samhainophobia, which is an irrational fear of Halloween. Trick-or-treating evolved from the ancient celtic tradition of putting out treats or food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain.

Ingredients 8 Granny Smith Apples, washed and dried completely, with stems removed 8 Candy Apple Sticks (much sturdier than regular skewers) 2 cups sugar 1 cup light corn syrup 1 cup warm water 1/8 teaspoon Cinnamon Oil Few drops red food coloring Method Insert sticks into the top of each apple. Line a large baking sheet with foil and spray heavily with nonstick spray. Set aside. Combine sugar, corn syrup, and water in a saucepan over medium high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Keep stirring until mixture reaches 300 degrees on a candy thermometer. If you’re unsure about the temperature of your candy, drop a bit in a glass of cold water. If it hardens immediately and easily breaks in half, it’s ready. If it sinks to the bottom and is pliable, it needs to cook a bit longer. Remove from heat and immediately stir in the cinnamon oil and red food coloring. Carefully dip apples in the coating and place on lined baking sheet to harden. Now, try out this classic recipe for yourself. Happy Halloween all!

There’s more to Doha than meets the eye. It’s ideal if you don’t want to fly too far and, especially, if you’re culturally curious! Some of the best souks in the GCC region are in Doha and the art scene here is also booming. We recommend haggling for a unique bargain in Souq Waqif where you’ll find everything from traditional dress shops, spice stalls, Bedouin handicrafts, quaint coffee houses and even an animal farm – it doesn’t get more cultural than this! A must-visit place is Katara Village, dubbed the ‘Valley of Culture’ this is where you’ll find a host of local and international artistic talent exhibiting their work and awaking your inner art connoisseur - don’t forget to check out Damien Hirst’s exhibit! Doha will not disappoint!

Shop ‘til you drop Dubai

Sprawling with countless malls, markets and boutique stores, shopping doesn’t get more exciting than when you’re in Dubai. More often, Dubai gives it’s visitors surreal settings and attractions to lure you (and your credit card!) into unforgettable shopping experiences; there’s the Souk Madinat, inside the Madinat Jumeirah Hotel, which has a swanky waterway to transfer people from its shops, bars and restaurants to the neighbouring clutch of hotels (talk about extravagant retail therapy!), then there’s the indoor ski slope with real snow in the humungous Mall of the Emirates, as well as Khan Murjan souk which connects the Wafi Mall, home of Burberry, Marks & Spencer and The One, with the popular Raffles Hotel. Let’s not forget that all of this is set to be surpassed by Mall of Arabia, designed to be the largest mall in the world at 10 million square feet (wowzer!), Whether you’re looking for an exclusive designer piece, traditional ethnic clothing, electronics or simple souvenirs and spices, Dubai caters to individual wants and needs! 40. fact magazine

Posi tive Artis try B+ is Zuhair Al Saeed’s first solo exhibition, being held at Albareh Art Gallery early this month. Shabana Adam talks to the Bahraini artist about keeping his work innovative, the challenges he faces and why art is a lifelong project…

L

ooking back to university, many people will remember it as a period of growth and great experiences. For Zuhair Al Saeed it’s no different. This was the pivotal time when his talent for art was noticed and praised by peers and professors. “I was a very active student and participated in many exhibitions at university,” Zuhair recalls. “I was also doing art lessons for students, teaching them the basics of fine art and colours.” This was the beginning of what was to be a successful art career. And now, Zuhair’s work will be on show at Albareh Art Gallery, for all to see. The exhibition is inspired by the words of the Syrian poet Adonis, “You say the world is dark, but look around you. Don’t you see that wherever you go, this darkness is full of light? It’s not about seeing darkness; it’s about discovering the light.” Aptly named B+ (Be Positive), Zuhair believes this collection of his work will showcase a different side of him and his art. fact magazine .45

ARTS

GO: Catch Zuhair’s exhibition at Albareh Art Gallery from October 6 to 24.

“This exhibition will carry a lot of surprises for the public attending the show,” he says. “The exhibition will discuss the relationship between light and darkness, focusing on the hidden beauty of objects that are around us in our everyday lives, and how to look at life in a more positive way, despite the issues we as human beings face everyday.” As well as drawing inspiration from renowned artists such as Picasso, Henri Matisse and Daly, Zuhair keeps his work inventive and original by taking deeper meanings from the things around him. “The environment that I live in is a fundamental source of inspiration and motivation in the art that I produce,” he says. “Personally, having deep vision in reality leads to creativity. The more you train your eyes to capture the beauty within and around you, the more positive results you will gain in your work.” He finds that both the challenge and satisfaction of being an artist comes from an ability to create art as a result of his own 46. fact magazine

conflicting thoughts and ideas. “Personally, when I face my white, plain canvas sheet, it’s as if I have entered a battlefield, dealing with conflicts in my head, as well as my senses,” Zuhair explains. “It can be very tough and challenging for someone to produce work when they are not in the right state of mind, and when that happens to me I simply leave the studio, come back another day, and start new.” Art is, however, more than just a hobby for Zuhair. It’s a lifelong project, from which he gets a sense of happiness and inner contentment. “I love what I do, it teaches me the real meaning of being passionate, which is the engine that drives me to achieving my goals in life,” he says. After B+, Zuhair’s art is set to take him all over the world, including Kuwait, Morocco and Barcelona. So, where does an

artist in his early thirties see himself in five years time? Zuhair wants nothing more than to leave a creative legacy where his work can become an inspiration for others. And, staying true to St Augustine’s famous quote, “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page,” Zuhair hopes to voyage around Europe and America to explore the abundance of art galleries on offer… A journey that, we’re sure, will go on to further encourage his commitment to contemporary art!

Damien Hirst The GCC art scene is being treated with an upcoming exhibition. Doha has been buzzing with gallerists and artists, their collectors and curators for the past year but no show has been more highly anticipated than Relics, Damien Hirst’s first ever solo exhibition in the Middle East. The capital is finally ready to see the largest collection of Hirst’s work ever assembled, spanning over twenty-five years. Here’s why you should hop on a plane and go and check it out for yourself...

50. fact magazine

Art lovers and culture vultures get ready for a truly special exhibition as world-renowned British artist, Damien Hirst is heading to Doha with the largest showcase of his work ever to be assembled, ready to go on display. He has been described as “one of the most influential artists of his generation” (Tate Modern) and it’s no secret that Damien Hirst has divided art lovers and critics alike with his interesting and intriguing work. Now, he’s ready to bring that debate to the GCC. As part of the cultural projects initiated by the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) to promote and support local and international art, the Al Riwaq Doha exhibition space will house many of Hirst’s pieces, some well-known and others unseen, in this retrospective showcase titled ‘Relics’. The British creative genius, who is also an avid collector of art himself, is famous for his artwork series of preserved dead animals as well as for selling his work at wallet-busting prices. Hirst first came to public attention in London, in the late 80s, with his exhibition Freeze, displayed in an abandoned warehouse and showing his own work and that of his friends and fellow students at Goldsmiths College. He has since, in the quarter century since that momentous show, become one of most prominent artists in the world. His countless series of now iconic work is commonly attributed with ushering in a new era for contemporary art. As part of the “Young British Artists”, he was a member of the most prominent group that dominated the contemporary scene back in the 90s. So, it’s safe to say that this special exhibition is somewhat overdue. It will be the artist’s first solo show in the Middle East and all the art appreciators in the region will be happy to know that the display, which starts on October 10, will continue until January 2014. The pieces selected for this showcase are taken from a crosssection of Hirst’s most important series. They include parts from the Spot Paintings and the Natural History series of animals preserved in formaldehyde, as well as what is by far the most exciting piece, for us, his famous diamond encrusted skull: ‘For the Love of God’ (2007). ‘Relics’ explains, “art’s about life and it can’t really be about anything else … there isn’t anything else.” Hirst’s work investigates and challenges contemporary belief systems, and dissects the tensions and uncertainties at the heart of human experience. Hirst claims that his work is a testament to his fascination with love, life, and death; he channels the different stages showing interaction of life with death and the decay of the human body. The introduction of such a series by the QMA is part of their cultural plan to foster appreciation of artistic practices and hence open the door for cultural dialogue. It also aims to bring local and regional audiences to take part in debates and discussions about the arts and to challenge and recreate new perspectives and understanding. Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa Bint Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani explains, “Underpinning the work of Qatar Museums

Authority is our belief that art can open new channels of communications between diverse nations, peoples and histories.” This exhibition follows in the footsteps of Hirst’s major retrospective at Tate Modern in 2012, which became the most visited solo exhibition in the gallery’s history. And it didn’t matter that the last big showcase received mixed, if not more critical, reviews, because, for Hirst, it’s all about encouraging opinions. He once told Reuters, “It’s always healthy to have both views - people love it, people hate it. I once said as long as they spell my name right I don’t mind.” We’re sure that his instantly recognisable works, which, no doubt, most people are looking forward to seeing, will attract much attention, intrigue and wonder. We can’t wait to fly over to Doha and check out what is, undoubtedly, one of the biggest and most significant art happenings of the year.

H Q&A

i Samar! Tell us a little bit about the concept of Crazy Opera… Crazy Opera is a Concert Show where there’s a succession of arias without really a main thread but it’s a “promenade” in crescendo between different styles and different time, where only the music and atmosphere create the whole show. But the most important thing in Crazy Opera is our great team. Next to me I have

Ziad Nehme who’s a Tenor that makes a great career in Germany and Roger Abi Nader, a Baryton who lives in Lebanon. Maestro Toufic Maatouk, will conduct our orchestra formed by occidental and oriental instruments with Ziyad Sahhab on Oud, the Antonine University Choir, and our Lebanese dancers. The whole team choreographed by Jean Sakr. Who or what has been your inspiration into music and performing? Opera wasn’t my first love but passion came with learning and time. I love all the well-made music. Opera is music with a story, singing, acting, movements and technique which is why I like Opera. I love Jacques Brel with his beautiful songs, his way of saying words, his gorgeous and authentic interpretation;

Samar Salame October sees Crazy Opera come to town for the Bahrain Music Festival! FACT talks to the woman behind this spectacular show, Samar Salame, about her love for opera, her thoughts on the classical music scene in the Middle East and what Crazy Opera is all about... I love Tom Waits, with his craziness; I love Cesare Siepi, with his deep voice and personality...And my other love is cinema, with the world of Tim Burton, Emir Kusturika, Almodovar. In reality, I love the show world and I love the fact that Opera is a mixture of all the artistic world like dancing, singing, and acting.

own self-understanding. Music is my way to understand and find myself and it’s not an easy career but it’s a perfect way to discover yourself and make yourself evolve. What’s the most challenging aspect of being a performer? The most challenging thing is to move the emotions of the audience. To give emotions, the performers have to feel what they are singing, to interpret it, to dominate the voice and to have fun doing it. But the most important thing is to be authentic. Any advice for upcoming musicians in this region? First of all, I would like to say to everyone that singing is one of the most beautiful things in the world. I advise every person in this world to sing. Then for upcoming singers, I can just say that surely technique is very important and fundamental but they never have to forget their own personality. How would you describe the classical music scene in the Middle East? We know that Opera is not part of our culture. But Opera is a very noble and powerful art and it is establishing its own space with the lot of Opera Houses that are being constructed and the big number of upcoming young singers. We certainly need to take risks and give a place for our own productions and not always bring only foreign productions. We have great directors, singers, musicians, choreographer, and conductors…

What keeps you excited about being part of Crazy Opera? As I said before, what excited me to create this show is the ability to mix almost all what I would like to do, to sing, to play and to have fun with Opera.

Where do you see yourself and Crazy Opera in five years time? I always live my opera career step by step without really wondering what will be next. I love the surprise that life gave me, making me an opera singer and I’m waiting to see what the future holds!

What has been your biggest career achievement so far? The biggest career achievement is on my

On the Record POP-rock

Girl Who Got Away, By Dido

Dido is like marmite you either love her or hate her. This is her first album since 2008 and if you were a fan of her old stuff then, aside from No Freedom, you probably won’t enjoy this record. We’ll give her credit, she’s tried to do something new by adding dance beats and even enlisting the help of Kendrick Lamar on Let Us Move On, but we’re not sure it quite works. It’s more snoozefest than exciting tunes - play on a rainy day!

POP

Prism, By KATY PERRY

If there’s anything we can count on Katy Perry for, it’s making a catchy pop tune. We’re still grooving to songs from her previous album, Teenage Dream, so it was going to take something special from this California Girl to make us sit up and take note! When she released the first single from Prism, Roar (way to make a statement!) we knew she was onto a winner. Prism, although still typically fun and flirty, shows a more mature side of Katy, no doubt taken from turbulence in her personal life since her last album. There’s a sense of empowerment, especially in the new single Dark Horse, featuring rapper Juicy J - a mix of relaxed beats and sweetly whispered lyrics. It seems that with Prism, it’s going to be the beat of the songs that really excels (hats off to the producers!) - get it now!

InDIE-FOLK-POP

All The Little Lights, By Passenger

The talented Michael Rosenburg, has given us one of the best albums this year. Upon hearing the single Let Her Go we knew this album was going to be packed full of heart-wrenching songs. His soft, beautiful voice combined with plucked guitar strings and strained percussion will have your emotions running high in the best way. We can safely say this is well worth listening to and a staple for any CD collection this year!

The Favored Daughter, By FAWZIA KOOFI WITH NADENE GHOURI

Up until now, our only meaningful insight into life in Afghanistan has come from renowned author Khaled Hosseini, but here is a book that movingly captures the political and cultural moment in Afghanistan, from the view of an influential Afghan woman. Fawzia Koofi is the nineteenth daughter of a local village leader in rural Afghanistan. Her mother left Fawzia to die in the sun after birth, but, defying all odds, she survived, and perseverance in the face of extreme hardship has defined her life ever since. 12 Years A Slave

Carrie

Director: Kimberly Peirce Cast: Chloe Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer

Director: Steve McQueen Cast: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender, Michael K. Williams What’s It About: The year is 1841 and we’re in pre-Civil War America when Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Unimaginable cruelty, unexpected kindness and the struggle to survive as well as retain his dignity is everything Solomon faces and struggles through in the antebellum South of the United States. It’s in his twelfth year of his enduring odyssey that Solomon has a chance meet with a Canadian abolitionist - a moment that could change his life forever. Why It’s Worth Watching: In one look at the breathtaking trailer, this movie shows the remarkable contradiction of the human condition based on the autobiography of Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor). It’s about one man’s incredible fight for survival and freedom through profound despair. What Solomon experiences is excruciating to watch, but this is what we love about McQueen, he has never been interested in sugar-coating his subject matter. Here he’s highlighting just how everyday the culture of slavery was. It’s emotionally devastating, distressingly familiar and teemed with both dread and possibility... Don’t be surprised if both Ejiofer and McQueen pick up an Oscar for their efforts, and rightly so. 56. fact magazine

What’s It About: Just in time for Halloween, this reimagining of a classic 1970s horror tale has us both excited and skeptical. Carrie White is a shy, lonely and awkward teen who is constantly bullied and outcast by her peers, and beaten and sheltered by her deeply religious mother at home. Her secret: she possesses the terrifying power of telekinesis. Expect some harrowing scenes with both Julianne Moore and Chole Grace Moretz really giving it their all as Margaret and Carrie White.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa What’s It About: Follows 86-year-old Irving Zisman ( Johnny Knoxville) on a journey across America with the most unlikely companion, his 8-year-old grandson Billy ( Jackson Nicoll). Expect the most insane and hilarious hidden camera road trip ever caught on film. That’s right, real people in unreal situations, including an encounter with male strippers, biker bar patrons and child pageant queens - this is going to be one absolutely messed up comedy.

mountain motoring: FACT DRIVES the new porsche IN OMAN FACT was invited to Oman to drive the new Porsche Panamera range in the stunning mountains. Here’s all about our thrilling time there...

fact magazine .59

OMAN

Porsche flew FACT to Oman to test the allnew 2014 Panamera range. We arrived at The Chedi Muscat Hotel (if you’re planning your Eid break this hotel will not disappoint), and were soon presented to Mr. Christer Ekberg, Porsche Managing Director Middle East & Africa, who introduced us to the 10 new Panamera models available in introduction phase. No resources have been spared in research to improve performance and design alike, some of the most noticeable changes are the tighter, more prominent and angled lines overall, narrower headlamps, lower plate positioning that makes the exhaust look sportier. In all, there are 15 standard choices but it’s worth mentioning the individualised luxury that Porsche can offer, you can custom choose the color and Porsche will take on the challenge to find the exact matching leather just for you (how’s that for exclusivity?). The Panamera Hybrid deserves a few pages on its own, a 56% consumption reduction at 135km/h top speed can cover 36km running purely on electric mode; you’ll never get stranded on the road without power as it can recharge itself while driving on combustion or sports mode. We got behind the wheel of the Panamera 4S and, convoy in full strength, took off for the Muscat mountains. This is when we really got to grips with just how special this car is; the effortless drive, the easy handling of the car, and the luxurious comfortable interior, really helps the driver to become one with the car as well as giving you the confidence that you’re safe to push boundaries. We drove through the breathtaking mountains, stopping for a picnic, after which we had the chance to test the Panamera Hybrid and the Turbo, on the way back to Muscat. We were, simply, impressed with all the Panamera motors – Porsche really have gone all out! This was a truly unforgettable experience, so much so, that our motoring expert took up the chance to test the Panamera on the roads of Bahrain… turn over to read all about his experience!

Porsche Panamera S is the most performancefocused luxury sedan on the market

The Porsche Panamera S is a car with a serious personality disorder; on one hand it’s a quiet, refined, luxury sedan. On the other, it’s a 420bhp, twin-turbocharged highway stormer. In 2009, Porsche began production of the Panamera – their contribution to the luxury sedan segment. Its release was inspired, over the next four years this market boomed. The Panamera’s niche was actually created by Mercedes back in 2004 when they introduced the CLS – a sedan styled like a coupé. Luxury sedans had previously been relatively simple formulas; they had to be huge in every respect. This meant gargantuan dimensions, smooth, powerful engines and interiors that could house a small army. Their remit was to waft company executives up and down motorways to and from meetings, perhaps even during them thanks to the array of technology and comfort they provided. Though these cars excelled, people wanted more. No longer were they satisfied with an excess of space, technology and opulence, they required their luxo-barges to look like a beauty queen. The Panamera was released in the same year as the Audi A7, and both were aimed directly at the CLS. BMW meanwhile had a concept, but it did not come to fruition until last year when they released the 6-series GranCoupé. Whilst all are similar in their coupé-esque design, they each have a very different personality. Having driven three out of four (Panamera, CLS and GranCoupé) the Porsche seems to be the most performance-focused. fact magazine .63

ISLAND RIDES

The Porsche Panamera S is fitted with the sports exhaust - a must for any porsche according to our motoring exoert. Although the Porsche Panamera S is quite a large, heavy car, it never feels so, says our motoring expert.

Though the Porsche’s performance intentions are apparent long before you enter the car, its abilities as a long distance cruiser are admirable. The three suspension settings on the PASM (Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management) system are very well judged. The Comfort setting provides a ride quality reflective of its name and is the one you will use most often. It cushions all but the biggest bump with ease yet retains impressive body control. Sport is slightly stiffer and quashes some body roll, and lastly Sport Plus is pretty much a racing mode. It’s too stiff for normal roads, but admittedly does an impressive job of keeping such a big car in check. This car was also fitted with the sports exhaust (a must on any Porsche in my opinion!) which also adds to the Jekyll and Hyde personality of the car. When turned off the V6 just purrs, never obtruding into the cabin. Turn it on however and you’re treated to the full snarling, crackling, turbowhooshing sound that a turbocharged V6 should have. As a true petrol head, I had 64. fact magazine

to keep it turned on for the majority of the time. I found the most rewarding setup to have is as follows; PASM in comfort, sports exhaust on and the engine in sport mode. It’s evident that purists still hold some resent for Porsche venturing out into the mainstream production market (saloons, SUV’s etc), however the more thoughtful enthusiasts realised it may be necessary to expand their range as this would provide the finances to fund an even greater performance/sports car range. Though powerful sedans had been around for decades when Porsche announced they were to start selling one, people quickly realised that a Porsche version may be quite a thing. Not every manufacturer has decades of racing experience to call upon when developing mainstream models. This experience really shines through when driving the Panamera, although it’s quite a large, heavy car it never feels so. In fact, if you choose the right combination of settings, it can actually feel quite nimble (for a near two-tonne car).

It’s by no means chuckable in the Cayman sense of the word, but hats off to the chassis engineers in Stuttgart; an 1800+kg 4-door sedan has no right to corner so well. I am an advocate of performance manufacturers offering more mainstream cars; not everyone can compromise rear seats or a boot and it’s a great way to offer motoring enthusiasts a way to have their cake and eat it. The Panamera does just that; comfortable continent crosser with space for the family and all your luggage, or late-night highway bruiser for when that devil appears on your shoulder.

Volvo xc60 is a competent SUV crossover, combining a supple ride with a spacious interior

The term crossover might not be familiar to everyone. In automobile terms, a crossover usually refers to a car with SUV styling and the platform from a car. This segment of cars gained notoriety in the early 2000’s, perhaps due to SUV’s increasing popularity in some markets which paved the way for a cheaper alternative. As a general rule, I am not overly fond of SUV’s. I can acknowledge a good one and I understand they serve a purpose, but ever since they became popular as roadcars, I have despised them. I have driven many cars and been a passenger in even more, and not once have I thought that any SUV has been more comfortable or luxurious than a full-size sedan. They also cannot match cars like-for-like in performance terms as they are usually heavier and have a higher centre of gravity, which equates to worse handling. So that leaves me drawing a blank; if they’re not used for off-road work, for what possible reason are they so popular? My suspicion is fashion. 66. fact magazine

68. fact magazine

The XC60, I’m glad to report, is actually quite unlike most SUV’s. It is higher than a car of course, but not so much that it causes you to suffer from vertigo. It also feels quite wieldy in most situations, only showing its weight and ride height in really tight corners or small roundabouts. The ride quality is good; there is little harshness over bumps and when driving on the highways, it is quite serene, with next to no road or wind noise coming into the cabin. As crossovers go, I believe that the XC60 is a good looking car. It’s not particularly outlandish, nor is it bland. It sticks to traditional Volvo styling cues such as the front grille and the tail lights stretching to the roofline, all of which endow it with a subtle, yet elegant look, but only if you specify the right colour. The dark brown metallic suits it down to the ground. From the outside it’s a similar size to a Range-Rover Evoque which is interesting as the model tested here also shares another similarity with that car; it comes sporting a turbo-charged 2.0 four-cylinder engine. But then this is no ordinary four-cylinder engine, it puts out 240bhp and is backed up by 320nm of torque which is evenly spread throughout the rev-range from. What surprised me the most was how responsive the engine is, I’ve driven quite a few cars with turbo-charged engines of late, and occasionally been left distinctly unimpressed. This however, was deeply impressive, especially when considering the weight it was pulling. One of the main reasons people choose crossovers is for space. The XC60

has an abundance of space. As soon as you enter the cabin, you’re aware of the extra headroom available and of the airiness of the cabin. The positioning of the seats and dashboard is rather strange however; perhaps I’m too tall, but I felt elevated way above the dashboard which made the controls a little below their ideal position. Generally though, you’ll not want for space. For me, the engine was the defining feature. Before I drove it, I expected it to be seriously underpowered, however it copes admirably. The XC60 certainly offers an individual alternative in the crossover segment; combining subtle good looks with a fantastic engine, Volvo’s impressive safety levels and a decent level of equipment.

iPhone 5s

Apple’s ‘Make or Break’ Model is Finally Here... The iPhone 5s is the long awaited progression from the much-loved iPhone 5, as well as being one half of Apple’s latest big reveal. For a long time, no other brand could match Apple when it came to mobile devices (they really did start the smartphone revolution) but in recent years the competitors have started to play catchup and have come pretty close to snatching the title of best smartphone. So the big question was, could Apple regain the smartphone throne with the iPhone 5s? There are some pretty cool new features, first being the colours. Apple have banished the classic black and white models and replaced them with slate, silver and gold that we’re sure will be very popular! Behind the appearance of the phone, there are some great techie features with the most hyped being the fingerprint scanner. The obvious advantage of this is safety, especially when using internet banking and when buying apps, but it’s also insanely cool (if possibly a little unnecessary).

The iphone 5s was finally unveiled. Fact sees if the handset lives up to the hype!

Price: BD400-500 Buy: Various electronic stores Battery: Talk time Up to 10 hours Image Quality: 8 MP Display: 4-inch Multi-Touch Retina display Weight: 3.95 ounces (112 grams) Pros: Fingerprint reader & better camera CONS: Few interface enhancements

One of the biggest improvements has to be the A7 chip, which means the iPhone 5s will be twice as fast as its predecessor. You’ll see this technology at work mostly in apps and games, meaning your average internet trawling won’t benefit as much from the improvement. Another exciting feature is the picture quality, which is set to be sharper and clearer due to the 8-megapixel camera combined with 1.5 micro pixels. Talk time has been raised from around 9 hours in the iPhone 5 to 10 in the iPhone 5s, a short increase only, possibly due to the small battery and handset size. Big changes were expected from this new model in order for it to overtake Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and other Nokia and Sony handsets. And though there are a few exciting improvements we’re not sure that Apple did quite enough with the iPhone 5s, in fact the handset seems a little rushed and, in our opinion, is still lagging behind its rivals.

Ouya console Simply for the Joy of Gaming...

The world of gaming consoles is a pretty competitive one, so it’s a brave move to bring out a new one when it faces such stiff competition, right? Wrong. OUYA has gone all out and launched a new console for video game fans. The console, of the same name, with the Android 4.1 operating system, is small, fun and cheap – something that is quite rare in the video games market. Sadly, something has to give and although this console has its great points, it also has its downfalls. Before we say anything else, we have to point out that the OUYA is great fun and does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a cheap console that will provide you with endless hours of entertainment due to its many games. The console has only been available for a matter of weeks yet already there are over 400 games available to play on it, and the best part, they’re all free to try out (yay!).

The Ouya Console is one for retro gaming fans who play just for fun! Unlike other consoles, before committing to a game that you’ve no idea whether you’ll actually enjoy playing, you can try out any game for free to see if it takes your fancy. Downloading is easy and works well because it means you won’t have multiple discs lying around your bedroom – everything is stored in the OUYA for you to use at your disposal. You can choose from action games, hit ‘em up games, and downright silly (yet addictive) games, and once your done, it’s easy to press delete and get rid of the ones you don’t particularly like or want. You can also put your own contributions into the game pool, so if you fancy a go at coding then you’re sorted. You’re not limited to just games, OUYA have partnered with various companies to allow you to stream music,

C

laiming on your insurance is something that most people dread; the long phone calls and masses of paperwork that it can bring. Now, Bahrain National Insurance (bni) has introduced a new app that makes the claiming experience more pleasant for everyone. Adrian Reid, Group IT Manager, explains why they decided to create the app, “When it comes to the claim that is where you want good service and quick turn around. So we decided to focus on making the claim experience a pleasant one,” and this resulted in a quick, easy and convenient app that takes the best of customer service and combines it with the smartphone culture we’re living in. The clever claim app comes with a handy checklist that allows you to upload photographs of your accident along with the police report, etc.. and can take as little as 15 minutes to complete the normally timeous process of claim notification. A stand out feature is that the client will be able to interact with the surveyor in order to meet up to assess the damage -

76. fact magazine

something that is of paramount importance to bni. “Excess payments may be made through a secure payment gateway,” Adrian says. So what if you have a question, or don’t want to complete the entire process on your phone? No problem, bni came up with a solution that they think improves the claims process even more. “The nice thing is that the customer doesn’t have to do the whole process themselves. At any point in the claim they can communicate with bni through their device,” Adrian explains. It’s understandable that bni want to provide a better service to their customers, but what was the drive behind the app? General Manager, Abdulla Khamis Al Suwaidi, says, “We are trying to make insurance more transparent - make it easier, understandable, and more convenient for the customer.”

GO: You can download the app for free on any iOS or Android device by searching for “bni claim”.

Lastly, the Chelsea range takes the best of London’s bohemian vibes and combines them with typically British styled coats, blazers and trousers. Our favourite pieces come in the form of an earthy, belted cardigan, which drapes perfectly and clinches you in where needed, a bohemian blouse which can be layered upon to create the perfect autumn attire, and, one of the stand out pieces for us, a grey suit which nails the androgynous trend perfectly. This month’s venue review saw us exploring the Khaleeji cuisine at the incredible Saffron restaurant. Khaleeji cuisine is a mix of Omani, Kuwaiti, Qatari and Bahraini cuisine and Saffron provided us with a great first experience. The venue itself was mind-blowing. Elegant, regal, and furnished to perfection, it manages to encompass the Middle East brilliantly. The tall ceilings, deep reds and glistening gold highlights set the tone for the delicious meal to follow. Now, onto the best bit, the food! The great impression the venue itself had made, gave us high hopes for the food and we’re glad to report that it did not disappoint. To start, we were presented with a basket of breads and an array of dips including hummus, labneh, baba ganoush and mango

pickle. Despite being insanely more-ish, we knew that we had to control ourselves as the food just kept on coming (and that’s no complaint!). Salads followed, packed with fresh coriander, lovely greens and tomatoes. They provided the perfect palette cleanser to prepare us for the next course. The selection of beef, cheese and vegetable Samboosa that followed can only be described as little bites of heaven.

ON THE MENU

The crispy exterior combined with the flavoursome filling meant that we couldn’t get enough, polishing them off in minutes and washing it down with super-fresh and delicious watermelon juice. This was a trend that continued into the main courses of Cajun Chicken Strips, Lamb Reyash, Prawn Biryani and Vegetable Okra Curry. The meats were tender, cooked to perfection and lavished with the perfect amount of seasoning,. The flavours were subtle yet intense and we devoured each spoonful fast. The Okra curry was one of the best we’ve ever tasted, keeping what could have been a boring vegetable dish highly exciting, a real delight if you are a vegetarian or a meat-lover looking for a different and unique main course. If you’re a dessert fiend then you would not be left disappointed at Saffron. We were treated to a wide range of the desserts on offer, from a delicious Bathetha (a cake made from brown sugar and dates, yum!) to our favourite dish, the Khanfaroosh. Trying to explain to you how amazing this dessert is, is pretty difficult (that’s why you should go and try it for yourself!) but we shall try – think of light sponge cakes, dusted in cinnamon, then dipped in honey and you’re there. Something akin to food paradise!

CHEF MINH DUONG South East Asian cuisine, specifically Vietnamese, is set to make a mark in Bahrain with the culinary skills of Chef Minh Duong (known as Chef Bruce), at the Wok restaurant in Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa…

Chef Bruce is passionate about the ingredients he uses and the way food is presented to guests on a plate, making for a truly delightful dining experience...

96. fact magazine

Staying true to his Vietnamese roots, Chef Bruce knows more than a thing, or two, about authentic and delicious Vietnamese food after being inspired to cook from watching his father in the kitchen. “My father really loved cooking for the family when I was growing up. I used to watch him cook and think ‘that’s what I want to do’,” he says. Chef Bruce grew up in a tight-knit Vietnamese community where food brought people together. He broke into the professional world of cooking 12 years ago and has since worked in numerous restaurants in Hanoi and Macau (basically, he is the best of the best at Vietnamese cuisine that we have here!). He begins with preparing fresh spring rolls. The ingredients; thin strips of grilled beef tenderloin, pineapple, chilli, cucumber and ginger, a sprinkle of fried onions and chopped nuts, and a few mint leaves, all tucked in lettuce and wrapped in rice paper. When it comes to taste, the spring rolls dipped in fish sauce are deliciously

CHEF’S TABLE

refreshing and crunchy. It really makes a difference that all this healthy goodness is packed in rice paper, making it a perfect light starter. For mains it’s grilled scallops with asparagus and sushi-style egg rolls. The scallop is cooked to perfection with the onion sauce being the true hero of this dish. The egg rolls are beautifully thin with a delicious filling of stir-fried rice, prawns and mixed veggies. The vegetarian offering consists of a mix of crunchy and soft rice noodles, and a delectable range of vegetables such as mushroom, pepper, carrot, spinach and onions. The different textures made for a healthy and super-tasty dish! Cooked with heart and feeling; the ingredients here are fresh, the flavour wholesome, the presentation pleasing and the taste incredible. It’s no secret that Chef Bruce has genuine passion, respect and love for food, especially Vietnamese cuisine, something that is becoming more rare to find in the bustling world of fast food takeaways and casual dining restaurants. If anyone’s going to make a mark for Vietnamese food in Bahrain, it’s going to be the Wok restaurant, headed by the culinary whizz that is Chef Bruce. Don’t believe us? Go and see for yourself and let the menu surprise, delight and spoil you! fact magazine .97

Bahrain’s Biggest Heavenly Hammam WELLBEING

Are you due a pamper session? Look no further! Shabana Adam visits the new turkish bath at the Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel’s Pure Spa, to see just what a hammam experience is all about... How often do you have a good scrub? And I don’t just mean hopping in the shower and covering yourself in any old fruit-scented body wash but, a really good scrub, one where, afterwards, your skin glows as shiny as jewels in the sun (or at least it feels that way!). The answer is, probably not as often as you should! That can all change now with a visit to the newest and biggest hammam experience in town - the Turkish Bath at Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel’s Pure Spa. 100. fact magazine

FACT was invited to try out the traditional hammam package which, as my tellak (personal hammam therapist) explained, “removes the layer of dead skin from all over your body”. Esther showed me to the iliklik - the transition area where you begin with adjusting to the heat. Feeling brave, I took a dip in the 38 degree plunge pool for a few minutes before being led into the gigantic hararet (hammam hot room). Esther asks if I have any heart or blood pressure conditions that she should be aware of, a professional ask that makes me feel even more comfortable about letting a stranger scrub me down. I’m lying on the huge marble slab and Esther begins the all-important neck-totoe scrub down with a loofah glove. It feels

strangely relaxing and a few minutes in I can literally hear the layer blocked by all the dead skin gasping for air - out with the old and in with the baby-soft new, this was exciting!

Traditions Followed

Sticking to the traditional ways, we move onto the really cool step - the foam. Esther uses a pillow case style cloth to produce incredibly huge volumes of lather (like at a foam party) and soaks the whole body with it. This is followed by unbelievably smooth lavender soap being massaged into the skin (now the dead cells are gone, the fresh layer of skin will absorb all the soapy goodness like a sponge!). To finish off I had a real Usain Bolt moment - you’ve got to go and plunge into the 12-degree pool. The trick is to do it quickly. I have never moved so fast in my life... I’m given ginger and honey tea, cookies and cucumber water in the relaxation lounge following the hammam treatment, and boy am I relaxed. All I want to do is have a nap. So, I guess this is why the Byzantines and Romans bathed this way: the hammam offers a big warm hug and well-deserved indulgence for busy bodies looking for an alternative to just a simple top-to-toe scrub! Go and treat yourselves now... Even if the novelty of having smooth and shiny skin lasts only a short while.

Benefits of visiting a Hammam

01.

The combination of heat, steam, and aromatherapy helps to relieve stress, relax muscles, ease respiratory problems, and stimulate circulation.

02.

A hammam treatment deeply cleanses the skin, improving its tone and texture.

03.

Visiting hammams increases the nutritional cleansing process, energy levels, and mental clarity. The holistic environment also boosts general well-being.

Traditional Hammam is 45 mins for BD35. To book your treatment call 1717 1122.

04.

The steam in a hammam helps to open the pores, as a result the experience aids the body to rid itself of toxins.

ARE YOU LIVING WITH ANXIETY? Christal Dennis is a Personal Performance Coach and Hypnotherapist with a Masters in Psychology, Leadership Development and Coaching. She is dedicated to helping people overcome life’s hurdles and tapping in to their deepest potential... Anxiety is quite a common occurrence in our society today. It has been found that approximately 20% of North Americans suffer from some form of anxiety disorder. Since it often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, it is thought to possibly be closer to 40%. Since the statistics are so high on this disorder a bit of understanding of anxiety disorder can at least allay some of those fears. Anxiety is not a disease, biological or genetic problem but rather it is something that occurs when we think about some future event with some amount of fear. A Health Tip from bnl

Contact No: (+973) 1758 7333 Website: www.bnl4life.com

Is a Medical Condition Affecting Your Weight? You’re following a weight-loss eating plan. You’re exercising almost every day. You’re proud of the new healthy habits you’ve learned. Yet week after week, the scale barely seems to budge... Several conditions can cause weight gain or hinder weight loss, among them: • Chronic stress: When you live with anxiety, stress, or grief, your body can produce chemical substances -- like the hormone cortisol -- that make your body more likely to store fat, especially around the waist. • Cushing’s syndrome: This happens when the adrenal glands (located on top of each kidney) produce too much cortisol, which leads to a buildup of fat in the face, upper back, and abdomen. • Hypothyroidism: If your thyroid is underactive, your body may not produce enough thyroid hormone to help burn stored fat. As a result, your metabolism is slower and you will store more fat than you burn - especially if you’re not physically active. • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): This disease is the result of a hormonal imbalance. Common symptoms are irregular menstrual bleeding, acne, excessive facial hair, thinning hair, difficulty getting pregnant, and weight gain that is not caused by excessive eating. • Syndrome X is a cluster of health conditions thought to be rooted in insulin resistance. When your body is resistant to the hormone insulin, other hormones that help control your metabolism don’t work as well. • Depression: many people who are depressed turn to eating to ease their emotional distress. • Hormonal changes in women: Some women may gain weight at times in their lives when there is a shift in their hormones - at puberty, during pregnancy, and at menopause. fact magazine .103

Is your lifestyle sustainable?

Beauty Spotlight

Our Health Columnist is fitness guru Craig Heslop, Founder & Coach of Tribal Fitness, who believes that a more back-to-basics and natural approach to living is the key to a healthy lifestyle‌ One of Tribal Fitness’ principles is sustainable living (SL). This is not in the environmental sense, but how sustainable your lifestyle is for future health. Is your lifestyle adding wealth to your health or are your habits moving you towards health poverty? There are several definitions of SL. They all confirm that sustainability is a choice and the responsibility falls on the individual. SL also requires a juggling act of our own energies. Adams W.M (2006) defines sustainability with three pillars. I shall ‘borrow’ his idea with the following concept: WORK - MONEY - PLAY – MOVE - FAMILY FRIENDS. I recently met two expat elders who had been incredibly successful in the business world. This may sound cool but both had paid a huge price with their

health. Their ‘work-money’ pillar was super strong but their ‘playmove’ was bone dry. I’m not suggesting that we do not work hard. The simple truth is that we need balance. These guys had dropped one of their juggling balls. Lots of money and death is not a great combo. As many of us over-fill our ‘work-money’ pillar, ‘play-move’ dries up like the desert. Playing and moving means we meet our primal demands and show respect to our body. Moving slowly every day with a walk is the best way to strengthen this pillar. It is important to associate with positive, hardworking and open-minded people. This is what we are creating at Tribal Fitness. The purpose of my rant this month is for self-reflection. Is there equilibrium in your structure or is your future unsustainable? GO: For more information, email craig@tribalfitness.com, or call 3947 3710

Describe your ideal day off in Bahrain...

For a romantic evening out, Bushido is my favourite restaurant for deliciously healthy food. When we have friends visiting Bahrain, I always take them to Trader Vic’s because we’re guaranteed a fun time. For more casual bites, I really love Tea Club in Amwaj, or if I am at work, the colourful Haute Cupcake in Seef also offers some great mid-afternoon pick-me-ups.

I enjoy exercising so always try to visit the gym when possible with a preference for lifting weights over cardio. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to go out kayaking and go-karting on a couple of occasions here and would like to do more of these activities, however I am often perfectly happy just relaxing by the pool and enjoying the pleasures of doing little.
