THE EDITOR
A
lthough this has been the most stressful issue to date we here at the FACT office could not be more proud over the sweat and tears shed over this particular edition. After months of deliberation over a revamp we just went for it and here is the result: a cooler, edgier cultural magazine. The journey wasn’t easy and we went through countless incarnations until we got it right, but we have redefined ourselves and tweaked all the edges that needed tweaking. Now new image aside we’re super excited to bring you the best budget friendly tips for living in the capital with just little or no cash at all in our Doha on a Budget feature (pages 31-
38). October brings a slew of amazing events and holidays to jam-pack our calendar with things to do. There’s Eid el Adha at the beginning of the month (page 22-25) followed by crazy German Oktoberfest festivities (page 38), and the scariest day of the year, and one of our favourites, Halloween (page 26-27); we’ve got crazy ideas of what we’re going as this year, how about you? The art scene is welcoming the biggest artist to hit this side of the world with Damien Hirst’s first solo

Party anthem king Bob Sinclar tears up the Grand Hyatt Doha’s beach with his amazing beats (page 16) for a grand finale for one crazy month! Thanks for all the support we’ve had over the years and we can’t wait for you to enjoy the new FACT as much as we did bringing it all together. Happy read!

CHECK IT OUT
Sweet Symphony With this being the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s very first visit to Doha, we had to sit down with Paul Hughes, BBCSO General Manager, to find out more about the famous British orchestra.
10. fact magazine
Is it the first time for the BBC SO to perform in Qatar? Yes this is our first time performing in Doha and we are greatly looking forward to it. Being part of the Qatar/UK celebration of culture is a huge honour and we are grateful to our colleagues in the QMA and British Council for making it possible. How many people make up the BBC SO? The orchestra has 98 members plus a management team of 18. The nationalities represented include British, German, Polish, Vietnamese, and Japanese. How does it feel to be touring Asia and performing in different countries? We enjoy touring Asia as each country is very different but with a rich and diverse culture; most have excellent concert halls and the food is especially interesting! Audiences in Asia are enthusiastic and knowledgeable and we are always made so very welcome.
Describe the music you will be performing for your two days in Qatar? The music we are performing represents the very best of 20th century British music, reflecting the period in which the BBC SO was created and developed since 1930. Elgar, Britten, Walton and Vaughan Williams are all composers whose works have formed the backbone of the BBC SO’s repertoire throughout its life and under the baton of Sir Andrew Davis, it will sound at its very best. This is music he loves and is passionate about. We know that you are only here for a very short time, but is there anything you really want to do/try in Doha while you are here? I am sure the musicians will all have various things they want to see during their brief visit, as many - like me – will be particularly keen to see the magnificent Museum of Islamic Art.
Quote of the Month “It has been an honour to work together with QMA on the Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture; the year has been going from strength to strength with some fantastic experiences along the way” Director of the British Council in Qatar Martin Hope quoted on the collaborative projects created during the Year of Culture.
Did you know...
Any plans to come back again in the future? We would love to return to Doha - it is always such a pleasure to forge a new and, hopefully, lasting relationship with a new country, a new venue and a new audience. GO: The BBC SO will be playing on October 1 at 7:30pm at the Katara Opera House. Tickets can be purchased online at www.virginmegastore. qa or at Virgin Mega Stores at Villagio and Landmark Malls.

Love Generation
Party anthem king Bob Sinclar is coming to the Doha shores this October 31. So Doha get ready to Hold On! The father of modern super-club dance, Bob Sinclar is as experimental as he is outrageous. From his personality to his performances, everything about him reflects his core philosophy of fun, glamour and having a good time. His influence on the dance scene cannot be ignored making him the legend he is today with hits on the underground as well as in the mainstream. Songs like Love Generation and World Hold On became instant classics, making Sinclar’s style of blending reggae and disco his music signature. Although synonymous with modern super-club dance, the name Bob Sinclar is in fact the alias of one Christophe Le Friant. Originally known as Chris ‘The French Kiss’, it was after watching Philippe de Broca’s French spy movie ‘Le Magnifique’ that the artist known as Bob 16.

The campaign includes various initiatives and activities which will take place during October all over the country. Culture vulture Bahrain
A hub of cultural cool the Island, as most of its inhabitants call it, is definitely the place to head to for a culture fix; from the excellent National Museum in Manama and the traditional houses of Muharraq to the extraordinary burial mounds at Sar, there are many fine sites to visit. If you want an old taste of Bahrain trips to the Old Fort and “Tree of Life” in the Sakhir desert are definitely a must. Art lovers on the other hand will love the galleries opening up all around town, where both local and international works of art are on display. For those modern travellers though Bahrain’s food culture will be what it’s all about; brunches and rooftop terraces are slowly stealing the spotlight as the island’s major attraction.
Shop ‘til you drop Dubai
Sprawling with countless malls, markets and boutique stores, shopping doesn’t get more exciting than when you’re in Dubai. More often, Dubai gives it’s visitors surreal settings and attractions to lure you (and your credit card!) into unforgettable shopping experiences; there’s Souk Madinat, inside the Madinat Jumeirah Hotel, which has a swanky waterway to transfer people from its shops, bars and restaurants to the neighbouring clutch of hotels (talk about extravagant retail therapy!), then there’s the indoor ski slope with real snow in the humungous Mall of the Emirates, as well as Khan MurjanSouk which connects the Wafi Mall, home of Burberry, Marks & Spencer and The One, with the popular Raffles Hotel. Let’s not forget that all of this is set to be surpassed by Mall of Arabia, designed to be the largest mall in the world at 10 million square feet (wowzer!). Shopping addicts will need to check this out! 24. fact magazine

Life’s a beach Oman
Oman’s beaches beckon you to spend your days basking in the sun, surfing the seas and enjoying life along the shore. Only an hour and 20 minutes away by plane, Oman is the closest to a paradise setting you’ll find in this region. Its coastline is some of the cleanest, prettiest and most private, especially if you’re staying at one of the country’s stunning resorts. On public beaches you can join in the weekend picnics and barbeques, that’s when you’re not out exploring the hidden coves and taking advantage of the gentle seas perfect for snorkelling. Check out Aviation beach, also known as Shell Beach, which is full of starfish, crabs and exotic shells – the four-wheel drive you’ll need to get there will be totally worth it!

The Modern Woman’s Destination We’ve heard so much about the Grand Hyatt Doha’s new and exciting special business hospitality changes that Dina Kabbani, FACT ’s tired and worn out Editor, had to go and see what the fuss was all about!
Heading over to the Doha hotspot, the hotel’s grand lobby is definitely a great welcome to one’s stay; its dark marble floors and plush interior is a sure promise of moreto-come luxury. My check-in goes smoothly, a major plus for one’s tired soles and anyone who hates waiting. Whisked off to my room, I’m told all about their new business related comfort additions for women and I’m super excited to check out for myself. I enter the room and it’s true. Gone are all the decorative throws and pillows that one tosses aside and never really uses. There’s a guest request communication 32. fact magazine
card calling to me from the table, asking me how I’d like my room cleaned. Would I require another pillow, more towels, or an extra bottle of shampoo? The attention to detail is amazing and I love how they list all the small things one sometimes gets too embarrassed to ask for. And it doesn’t end there! The bathroom has also gotten a makeover with bath amenities all upgraded to lotions and potions sourced by skin and hair experts, like famous dermatologist Dr. Kenet and spa guru June Jacobs. Now
hair and skin can also get some special treatment for those who are constantly on the go. A bit peckish I pick up the menu and am delighted to see new offerings with healthy low fat and nutritious items and even a “create your own” option. Who hasn’t had their share of heavy hotel food, so it’s a change to see something that is not going make me feel sluggish or weigh me down. A quick shower afterwards in the beautiful bathroom and nicely tucked into my cotton robe and slippers, both made especially to size for women, I realize I’ve forgotten my hairbrush. I give a quick call to housekeeping and the lovely woman on the phone is quick to help. She even offers me a list of items (complimentary, to borrow or buy) that they have available. From hairspray to curling irons, the list is complete with everything the modern day woman needs. I get into bed and get ready for some quality TV; I’m looking forward to a few hours of nothing but good old relaxation. I don’t know whether it was because I was super tired or because sleeping on the Grand Hyatt’s superb kingsized bed was like sleeping on a cloud, all I know was that I didn’t even get to do any channel surfing before I was knocked out good for the night.

Damien Hirst Doha has been buzzing with gallerists and artists, their collectors and curators for the past year but no show has been more highly anticipated than Relics, Damien Hirst’s first ever solo exhibition in the Middle East. The capital is finally ready to see the largest collection of Hirst’s work ever assembled, spanning over twenty-five years of his artistic career featuring both iconic and previously unseen works.
46. fact magazine
Art lovers and culture vultures get ready for a truly special exhibition as world-renowned British artist, Damien Hirst is heading to Doha with the largest showcase of his work ever to be assembled, ready to go on display. He has been described as “one of the most influential artists of his generation” (Tate Modern) and it’s no secret that Damien Hirst has divided art lovers and critics alike with his interesting and intriguing work. Now, he’s ready to bring that debate to the GCC. As part of the cultural projects initiated by the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) to promote and support local and international art, the Al Riwaq Doha exhibition space will house many of Hirst’s pieces, some well-known and others unseen, in this retrospective showcase titled ‘Relics’. The British creative genius, who is also an avid collector of art himself, is famous for his artwork series of preserved dead animals as well as for selling his work at wallet-busting prices. Hirst first came to public attention in London, in the late 80s, with his exhibition Freeze, displayed in an abandoned warehouse and showing his own work and that of his friends and fellow students at Goldsmiths College. He has since, in the quarter century since that momentous show, become one of most prominent artists in the world. His countless series of now iconic work is commonly attributed with ushering in a new era for contemporary art. As part of the “Young British Artists”, he was a member of the most prominent group that dominated the contemporary scene back in the 90s. So, it’s safe to say that this special exhibition is somewhat overdue. It will be the artist’s first solo show in the Middle East and all the art appreciators in the region will be happy to know that the display, which starts on October 10, will continue until January 2014. The pieces selected for this showcase are taken from a crosssection of Hirst’s most important series. They include parts from the Spot Paintings and the Natural History series of animals preserved in formaldehyde, as well as what is by far the most exciting piece, for us, his famous diamond encrusted skull: ‘For the Love of God’ (2007). ‘Relics’ explains, “art’s about life and it can’t really be about anything else … there isn’t anything else.” Hirst’s work investigates and challenges contemporary belief systems, and dissects the tensions and uncertainties at the heart of human experience. Hirst claims that his work is a testament to his fascination with love, life, and death; he channels the different stages showing interaction of life with death and the decay of the human body. The introduction of such a series by the QMA is part of their cultural plan to foster appreciation of artistic practices and hence open the door for cultural dialogue. It also aims to bring local and regional audiences to take part in debates and discussions about the arts and to challenge and recreate new perspectives and understanding.

EXPO
Damien Hirst Relic’s opens on October 10 at Al Riwaq Centre
“I’ve got an obsession with death, but I think it’s like a celebration of life rather than something morbid.” Damien Hirst
Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa Bint Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani explains, “Underpinning the work of Qatar Museums Authority is our belief that art can open new channels of communications between diverse nations, peoples and histories.” This exhibition follows in the footsteps of Hirst’s major retrospective at Tate Modern in 2012, which became the most visited solo exhibition in the gallery’s history. And it didn’t matter that the last big showcase received mixed, if not more critical, reviews, because, for Hirst, it’s all about encouraging opinions. He once told Reuters, “It’s always healthy to have both views - people love it, people hate it. I once said as long as they spell my name right I don’t mind.” We’re sure that his instantly recognisable works, which, no doubt, most people are looking forward to seeing, will attract much attention, intrigue and wonder. EXHIBITION: internationally renowned writer, critic and curator, Francesco Bonami. It forms part of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture which celebrates and showcases the deep-rooted bilateral relations between Qatar and the UK. fact magazine .47
ARTS
The Golden Age Always one to support creativity and promote artistic dialogue, Mathaf has been a pioneer in offering an Arab perspective on modern and contemporary art. For the next few months they’re giving Doha the chance to revel in the works of the talented artist Adel Abdessemed with his new exhibition L’âge d’or. Known as the Golden Age in English, his show revolves around some of his recent works, from drawings and paintings to sculptures and videos, many created by the artist especially for this show in Doha. Working across a wide range of media, Abdessemed transforms well-known materials and imagery into charged artistic declarations. His use of symbolism is world known and can be seen in the materials he picks; camel bones, gum, gold, and terracotta take on new and multiple meanings. Some of the newly created pieces that will be on display include the eponymous L’âge d’or, a bas-relief work of gold-plated brass depicting the artist’s four young daughters. Julie, a life-size sculpture of the artist’s wife will also be exhibited, alongside other new sculptures like La Chine est proche, a bicycle fashioned from camel bone, and Curiosity, a bas-relief in red terracotta, depicting NASA’s robot on the planet Mars. The Butterfly Effect Anima Gallery’s new feature exhibition is causing excitement amongst the art community. Get ready for a flutter of emotion!
In his latest exhibition, Once Upon a Butterfly, Lebanese artist Said Baalbaki takes people on a journey through his difficult life living out of suitcases. Baalbaki, who was born and raised in Beirut, had a difficult childhood growing up among the war-torn Arab country. He depicts his troublesome flight of evacuation, migration and of eventual immigration to that of the stages of a butterfly. The beautiful, yet fragile butterfly symbolizes everything that is related to the ongoing metamorphosis of the human soul. The spiritual evolution from Childhood (the Caterpillar), to Adulthood (the Butterfly), is caught in his art giving us glimpses into his journey through the story of a migrating butterfly. He shares his escape from Lebanon to Berlin, then his flight from the German capital heading the fall of the berlin wall in 1990. His suitcases travel the same path as a butterfly; sometimes they are scattered, often they are heaped. They collect the debris of time along the journey of metamorphosis. The message that leaves with you after the exhibit is that Said Baalbaki is the butterfly. He has been on the same migrating journey, and has grown in the process from a mere child into adulthood. A really sweet ending to a very moving exhibition, giving a whole new meaning to the circle of life. GO: The exhibition is open until November 15 at the Anima Gallery at The Pearl. On the Record POP-rock
Girl Who Got Away, By Dido
Dido is like marmite you either love her or hate her. This is her first album since 2008 and if you were a fan of her old stuff then, aside from No Freedom, you probably won’t enjoy this record. We’ll give her credit, she’s tried to do something new by adding dance beats and even enlisting the help of Kendrick Lamar on Let Us Move On, but we’re not sure it quite works. It’s more snoozefest than exciting tunes - play on a rainy day!
POP
Prism, By KATY PERRY
If there’s anything we can count on Katy Perry for, it’s making a catchy pop tune. We’re still grooving to songs from her previous album, Teenage Dream, so it was going to take something special from this California Girl to make us sit up and take note! When she released the first single from Prism, Roar (way to make a statement!) we knew she was onto a winner. Prism, although still typically fun and flirty, shows a more mature side of Katy, no doubt taken from turbulence in her personal life since her last album. There’s a sense of empowerment, especially in the new single Dark Horse, featuring rapper Juicy J - a mix of relaxed beats and sweetly whispered lyrics. It seems that with Prism, it’s going to be the beat of the songs that really excels (hats off to the producers!) - get it now!

All The Little Lights, By Passenger
The talented Michael Rosenburg, has given us one of the best albums this year. Upon hearing the single Let Her Go we knew this album was going to be packed full of heart-wrenching songs. His soft, beautiful voice combined with plucked guitar strings and strained percussion will have your emotions running high in the best way. We can safely say this is well worth listening to and a staple for any CD collection this year!

The Favored Daughter, By FAWZIA KOOFI WITH NADENE GHOURI
Up until now, our only meaningful insight into life in Afghanistan has come from renowned author Khaled Hosseini, but here is a book that movingly captures the political and cultural moment in Afghanistan, from the view of an influential Afghan woman. Fawzia Koofi is the nineteenth daughter of a local village leader in rural Afghanistan. Her mother left Fawzia to die in the sun after birth, but, defying all odds, she survived, and perseverance in the face of extreme hardship has defined her life ever since. This amazing biography casts a light over Fawzia’s life, the country’s first female parliament speaker, looking at a series of poignant letters she wrote to her two daughters before each political trip, giving a detailed insight into what she dreamed for all the women of Afghanistan.

12 Years A Slave
Carrie
What’s It About: The year is 1841 and we’re in pre-Civil War America when Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Unimaginable cruelty, unexpected kindness and the struggle to survive as well as retain his dignity is everything Solomon faces and struggles through in the antebellum South of the United States. It’s in his twelfth year of his enduring odyssey that Solomon has a chance meet with a Canadian abolitionist a moment that could change his life forever.
What’s It About: Carrie White is a shy, lonely and awkward teen who is constantly bullied and outcast by her peers, and beaten and sheltered by her deeply religious mother at home. Carries secret, that she is blessed with the terrifying power of telekinesis, results in her unleashing the full strength of this gift at her senior prom, when she is pushed too far by a prank and decides it is time to teach those involved a deadly lesson. Why It’s Worth Watching: Just in time for Halloween, this reimagining of a classic 1970s horror tale has us both excited and skeptical. It’s the second time a remake of Carrie is being attempted but we have high hopes as the director has a respectable résumé (with the excellent Boys Dont Cry on it!) and the cast is somewhat stellar too - Judy Greer in the Betty Buckley role, this is totally acceptable. Expect some harrowing scenes with both Julianne Moore and Chole Grace Moretz really giving it their all for their respective roles of Margaret and Carrie White. There’s a good chance this horror won’t have the same impact as the original but, nonetheless, we’re sure a few of you will walk away learning that when you mess with fire, you will get burned.
Director: Kimberly Peirce Cast: Chloe Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer
Director: Steve McQueen Cast: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender, Michael K. Williams
Why It’s Worth Watching: In one look at the breathtaking trailer, this movie shows the remarkable contradiction of the human condition based on the autobiography of Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor). It’s about one man’s incredible fight for survival and freedom through profound despair. What Solomon experiences is excruciating to watch, but this is what we love about McQueen, he has never been interested in sugar-coating his subject matter. Here he’s highlighting just how everyday the culture of slavery was. It’s emotionally devastating, distressingly familiar and teemed with both dread and possibility... Don’t be surprised if both Ejiofer and McQueen pick up an Oscar for their efforts, and rightly so. 52. fact magazine

That’s right, real people in unreal situations, including an encounter with male strippers, biker bar patrons and child pageant queens - this is going to be one absolutely messed up comedy.

OMAN
Porsche flew FACT to Oman to test the allnew 2014 Panamera range. We arrived at The Chedi Muscat Hotel (if you’re planning your Eid break this hotel will not disappoint), and were soon presented to Mr. Christer Ekberg, Porsche Managing Director Middle East & Africa, who introduced us to the 10 new Panamera models available in introduction phase. No resources have been spared in research to improve performance and design alike, some of the most noticeable changes are the tighter, more prominent and angled lines overall, narrower headlamps, lower plate positioning that makes the exhaust look sportier. In all, there are 15 standard choices but it’s worth mentioning the individualised luxury that Porsche can offer, you can custom choose the color and Porsche will take on the challenge to find the exact matching leather just for you (how’s that for exclusivity?). The Panamera Hybrid deserves a few pages on its own, a 56% consumption reduction at 135km/h top speed can cover 36km running purely on electric mode; you’ll never get stranded on the road without power as it can recharge itself while driving on combustion or sports mode. We got behind the wheel of the Panamera 4S and, convoy in full strength, took off for the Muscat mountains. This is when we really got to grips with just how special this car is; the effortless drive, the easy handling of the car, and the luxurious comfortable interior, really helps the driver to become one with the car as well as giving you the confidence that you’re safe to push boundaries. We drove through the breathtaking mountains, stopping for a picnic, after which we had the chance to test the Panamera Hybrid and the Turbo, on the way back to Muscat. We were, simply, impressed with all the Panamera motors – Porsche really have gone all out! This was a truly unforgettable experience, so much so, that our motoring expert took up the chance to test the Panamera on the roads of Doha… turn over to read all about his experience!

Porsche Panamera S is the most performancefocused luxury sedan on the market
The Porsche Panamera S is a car with a serious personality disorder; on one hand it’s a quiet, refined, luxury sedan. On the other, it’s a 420bhp, twin-turbocharged highway stormer. In 2009, Porsche began production of the Panamera – their contribution to the luxury sedan segment. Its release was inspired, over the next four years this market boomed. The Panamera’s niche was actually created by Mercedes back in 2004 when they introduced the CLS – a sedan styled like a coupé. Luxury sedans had previously been relatively simple formulas; they had to be huge in every respect. This meant gargantuan dimensions, smooth, powerful engines and interiors that could house a small army. Their remit was to waft company executives up and down motorways to and from meetings, perhaps even during them thanks to the array of technology and comfort they provided. Though these cars excelled, people wanted more. No longer were they satisfied with an excess of space, technology and opulence, they required their luxo-barges to look like a beauty queen. The Panamera was released in the same year as the Audi A7, and both were aimed directly at the CLS. BMW meanwhile had a concept, but it did not come to fruition until last year when they released the 6-series GranCoupé. Whilst all are similar in their coupé-esque design, they each have a very different personality. Having driven three out of four (Panamera, CLS and GranCoupé) the Porsche seems to be the most performance-focused. fact magazine .59
ISLAND RIDES
The Porsche Panamera S is fitted with the sports exhaust - a must for any porsche according to our motoring exoert. Although the Porsche Panamera S is quite a large, heavy car, it never feels so, says our motoring expert.
Though the Porsche’s performance intentions are apparent long before you enter the car, its abilities as a long distance cruiser are admirable. The three suspension settings on the PASM (Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management) system are very well judged. The Comfort setting provides a ride quality reflective of its name and is the one you will use most often. It cushions all but the biggest bump with ease yet retains impressive body control. Sport is slightly stiffer and quashes some body roll, and lastly Sport Plus is pretty much a racing mode. It’s too stiff for normal roads, but admittedly does an impressive job of keeping such a big car in check. This car was also fitted with the sports exhaust (a must on any Porsche in my opinion!) which also adds to the Jekyll and Hyde personality of the car. When turned off the V6 just purrs, never obtruding into the cabin. Turn it on however and you’re treated to the full snarling, crackling, turbowhooshing sound that a turbocharged V6 should have. As a true petrol head, I had 60. fact magazine
to keep it turned on for the majority of the time. I found the most rewarding setup to have is as follows; PASM in comfort, sports exhaust on and the engine in sport mode. It’s evident that purists still hold some resent for Porsche venturing out into the mainstream production market (saloons, SUV’s etc), however the more thoughtful enthusiasts realised it may be necessary to expand their range as this would provide the finances to fund an even greater performance/sports car range. Though powerful sedans had been around for decades when Porsche announced they were to start selling one, people quickly realised that a Porsche version may be quite a thing. Not every manufacturer has decades of racing experience to call upon when developing mainstream models. This experience really shines through when driving the Panamera, although it’s quite a large, heavy car it never feels so. In fact, if you choose the right combination of settings, it can actually feel quite nimble (for a near two-tonne car).
It’s by no means chuckable in the Cayman sense of the word, but hats off to the chassis engineers in Stuttgart; an 1800+kg 4-door sedan has no right to corner so well. I am an advocate of performance manufacturers offering more mainstream cars; not everyone can compromise rear seats or a boot and it’s a great way to offer motoring enthusiasts a way to have their cake and eat it. The Panamera does just that; comfortable continent crosser with space for the family and all your luggage, or late-night highway bruiser for when that devil appears on your shoulder.

PLUGGED-IN
iPhone 5s
Apple’s ‘Make or Break’ Model is Finally Here... The iPhone 5s is the long awaited progression from the much-loved iPhone 5, as well as being one half of Apple’s latest big reveal. For a long time, no other brand could match Apple when it came to mobile devices (they really did start the smartphone revolution) but in recent years the competitors have started to play catchup and have come pretty close to snatching the title of best smartphone. So the big question was, could Apple regain the smartphone throne with the iPhone 5s? There are some pretty cool new features, first being the colours. Apple have banished the classic black and white models and replaced them with slate, silver and gold that we’re sure will be very popular! Behind the appearance of the phone, there are some great techie features with the most hyped being the fingerprint scanner. The obvious advantage of this is safety, especially when using internet banking and when buying apps, but it’s also insanely cool (if possibly a little unnecessary).
The iphone 5s was finally unveiled. Fact sees if the handset lives up to the hype!

Price: QR4000-5000 Buy: Various electronic stores Battery: Talk time Up to 10 hours Image Quality: 8 MP Display: 4-inch Multi-Touch Retina display Weight: 3.95 ounces (112 grams) Pros: Fingerprint reader & better camera CONS: Few interface enhancements
One of the biggest improvements has to be the A7 chip, which means the iPhone 5s will be twice as fast as its predecessor. You’ll see this technology at work mostly in apps and games, meaning your average internet trawling won’t benefit as much from the improvement. Another exciting feature is the picture quality, which is set to be sharper and clearer due to the 8-megapixel camera combined with 1.5 micro pixels. Talk time has been raised from around 9 hours in the iPhone 5 to 10 in the iPhone 5s, a short increase only, possibly due to the small battery and handset size. Big changes were expected from this new model in order for it to overtake Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and other Nokia and Sony handsets. And though there are a few exciting improvements we’re not sure that Apple did quite enough with the iPhone 5s, in fact the handset seems a little rushed and, in our opinion, is still lagging behind its rivals.

DAY 1 Dina GUINEA PIGS Dina Kabbani, 28, Editor of FACT Magazine Farah Al Alfy, 30, Marketing Communications Manager at Grand Hyatt Doha Habiba El Derini, 26, Senior Consultant at PwC Nihan Alan, 27, Country Director for Oxford Business Group James Newman, 23, Freelance Graphic Designer & Photographer
Woke up this morning pretty excited about trying the juices. Got them yesterday afternoon and they look too cool! My first three juices down and I’m on a role, no hunger pangs in sight and I’m gulping them down. Talked too soon: the fifth one, with its terrible smell, has me now dreading the next. Although I thought it would taste amazing since it looked so yummy and creamy, the Go Nuts is not that enticing when i take a chug of it; it’s borderline chalky and somewhat too grainy. It’s a fail for me. Oh went to a yoga class!
Farah
Just had the first one, Green Junkie. I love it. So refreshing, like salad in a bottle. Feeling good and excited about this. 12pm and still feeling good! Cool crush, the second juice, is okay but doesn’t feel as filling and nutritious as Green Junkie. Also too sweet for me but I guess I need a sugar fix. It’s 2pm and I’m feeling cold and a bit lightheaded- daydreaming of Italian food. Day now is nearly over and I’m in bed falling asleep as I sip on number 6. I love this one - it tastes like Christmas. Perfect for before bedtime.
Habiba
I got to work and neatly arranged my raw juice bottles in the kitchen fridge and decided to take a picture of them looking all pretty and colourful (naturally I needed this photo for Instagram - #day1detox #yay). Had my first Green Junkie around 9:30am and felt like I was literally drinking a salad. Juice two was Cool Crush, which I absolutely loved because of the pineapple and mint. Around 2:30pm Green Junkie had crept up on me again; once more I downed it as fast as I could (I recall even blocking my nose to avoid having to smell it). By around 7pm the real hunger pains began, and I was feeling quite tired by this point. I headed home, and had my last juice of the day: Go Nuts! This was like heaven in a bottle, it tasted just like a milkshake and after a day of pure liquids this was amazing – felt like I was being rewarded for having completed Day 1.
Nihan
I had my first juice of the day quite early around 7:30am so it made me feel a bit nauseous on an empty stomach. I had half of it initially and the other half over the next hour. Personally, I’m not a big fan of mint so the second juice, if I had the option, I would take it out! The second Green Junkie came after and in comparison to to the first one, all i can smell are vegetables everywhere from my throat to my nose and even my stomach! Yuck. I just wish one of the juices had banana or something! Went for a run followed by a sauna session to help me sweat out the toxins.
James
So, had the first juice, as much as I hate cucumber, it was rather tasty, and surprisingly satisfying. Next up was Cool Crush, very juice like and didn’t really feel ‘detoxifying’, something I could imagine getting at a restaurant here in Doha. The Beat It was odd. It looked like paint, and the ginger was very strong, also not being a beetroot fan made it a bit more difficult to stomach. Four juices in, and four litres of liquid consumed, I was feeling less bloated than expected – averaged about 14 trips to the toilet a day. The best one was the Go Nuts. In fact it was that good I ended up ordering a gift set of 4 more. At the end of my day after work, I felt I had the energy to go to the gym. Did my usual workout, about 1h30. Big big mistake.

DAY 2 Dina
This morning I get up and I’m not really looking forward to the juices. After the first one though I seem to like it way more than yesterday. The second one is my favourite – absolutely loving it today! Tastes like your regular juice, a welcomed change from those green veggie ones. Only thing I’m noticing today though is that I’m super cold. Even in this Doha heat I’ve got the AC turned off and I’m freezing! Planned with the rest of the group to go walk so we can sweat the toxins out then go for a Pilates class. PS: Sneezed a couple of times and have this feeling that I’m getting a cold, maybe a detox symptom?
Farah
7am woke up full of energy and didn’t even hit snooze on my alarm. It’s 12pm and I’m on Cool Crush, which tastes better than I remember, maybe it got more bitter overnight? Yummy. Feeling really cold always after my juices, have to warm up with a green tea. It’s 3:30pm and I’m feeling hungry and a bit weak; finding it hard to focus. Going to Pilates in a bit and can’t wait to go back home to have the Go Nuts – definitely feels like a treat at the end of the day.

Nihan Habiba
Day 2 was definitely a lot easier and surprisingly I didn’t get hungry at all. I was super excited while drinking my Cool Crush and as the day before, drank it really slowly to enjoy it for as long as possible. Green Junkie was downed in a heartbeat. Beat It and Sucker Punch both tasted even better than they did on Day 1. Went for a run on the Corniche – thought the heat and humidity would help me sweat out the toxins. After an hour of jogging I still had energy for another workout so I decided to go to Pilates. By the time I was done I was dead but was jumping with joy knowing I’d go home to shower, have my treat and go to sleep – I forgot to mention, Go Nuts has a magical way of putting you to sleep like a baby.
All juices tasted much better today. I have more energy as well. It really takes your full day to finish all the juices and I found myself drinking throughout the day, as I never finished the whole bottle all at once.
James
Waking up that morning was torture. Post workout I always have my protein shake and during I’ll have my BCAA drink. Clearly my body was missing the supplements too much that I had little to no muscle recovery overnight. I felt drained of energy and sore everywhere.
Green Junkie Beat It Beetroot Carrot Ginger Apple Lemon
Parsley Cucumber Apple Lemon Spinach Lettuce
Sucker Punch Lemon Cayenne Agave
Cool Crush
Go Nuts
Cashew Vanilla Date Cinnamon
Pineapple Mint Apple
DAY 3 Dina
I got up to work, took my juices with – it seems wherever I go they’re coming with me. I feel a bit light headed today but just a bit, nothing to write home about. Nose is now blocked guess everything is exiting my body through my nasal cavities, yuck! This is my final juice and I couldn’t be happier! Although I haven’t once felt hungry my nose can’t take it anymore, I’m sniffling like no other and now my eyes are starting to pour – but I guess this mean it’s working yay!
Farah
Can’t believe it’s the last day already; it has been much easier than expected. Already noon now and I’m missing a lunch break but not so much the actual lunch – feeling good. By 2pm don’t feel so good anymore, I’m tired and need a nap. Today is definitely the hardest; simply exhausted and also on edge. 9pm now and enjoying my last Go Nuts and looking forward to sleep. PS: Lost 1 kilo.
Habiba
Waking up on Day 3 knowing it was my last day and that soon I’d be back to eating real food again was extremely motivating. I felt extremely proud of myself for having completed two full days of juicing and maintaining the energy levels that I had. Having had 4 bottles of Green Junkie I had become immune to its taste and it also didn’t taste as miserable as it did on Day 1 and 2. I enjoyed all my drinks and continued drinking lots of water throughout the day to avoid getting headaches and to stay energized. I went to the gym for my usual workout and I felt great. Getting ready to drink my final drink of the day, I was almost sad knowing I’d never have another Go Nuts again – yes, it was that good.
Nihan
Green Junkie got more disgusting and difficult to finish! Beat It as well. Actually I couldn’t finish Beat It. Favourite part was Go Nuts again as it’s filling and tastes great. Although it was the last day, I wasn’t hungry at all. I didn’t do cardio or sauna this last day.
James
That morning waking up was actually not an issue. Felt a bit lighter and fresher, especially compared to the day before. Did the day, bit more difficult reaching the 500ml of water between each juice because I felt full the entire day. By the end I was craving solid food more and more, but stuck with it. All in all, it’s definitely something I’d recommend for someone on a Doha diet! It’ll clean you right up and give you a chance to start eating healthier and reset the system. The convenience of having the juices delivered is definitely a plus!

When we think of Tex-Mex, we think of liquid cheese on a bed of nachos, huge monstrosities served at chain restaurants, and deep-fried junk food. But head over to Salsa and that’s all thrown out the window or better yet the saloon-like doors of the place, and Mexico comes alive. The playful design elements of cacti and sombreros contribute to a casual and somewhat kitsch ambience, the ceramic cups and plates that decorate the tables are bright and colourful, and the music and conversation are loud. Chef Raj, who runs the place, can be seen buzzing around the open kitchen making it a lively dining experience for those of us sitting outside. After working in London for the past 14 years at some of the best-known names in the culinary world including some very famous three Michelin star chefs, he moved to Doha seven months ago to work as Executive Sous Chef and oversee all of the Doha Marriot’s restaurants. “My love for cooking started because of my mother” he told us, “she was a pastry chef and had me make a soft bread roll for my first baking experience”. Triple Treat Delight Autumn Escape The Spa @Four Seasons Call 4494 8888 160 minutes, QR1295
FACT’s Badir Bechara went to escape the daily grind at the Four Seasons Doha Spa. Saied, his masseuse, treated him to their new Autumn Escape that features a terrific trio of treatments: body scrub, massage, and facial. The session started with a full body-scrub using “Organic Green Tea Salt Therapy exfoliate”, used to clean as well as exfoliate the skin of all impurities. After a quick rinse off it was time to shower and get ready for a full body massage. Before starting you get to pick from a choice of oils from Wood, Fire, Earth, Water and Metal. Saied has a whole massage technique that focuses on the client’s specific problem areas, perfect for those who need to de-stress and unwind. The last step to this wonderful journey is a revitalising facial, a perfect ending to 2.5 hours of pure bliss. 86. fact magazine

Habiba El Derini Senior Consultant at PwC
Doha Insider
What are the things you love about the Qatari capital?
Describe your ideal day off here…
Many people view the ridiculously small size of Doha as being a negative thing; I see it as being the best thing about it. I love that the two farthest points on Google Maps are never more than a 20 minute drive apart, I love that the faces I see while shopping at Carrefour are the same ones I see having dinner on the table beside me at the W, and the same ones I see tanning on the beach. There is something really cosy and warm about it, I love how welcoming it is and not as overwhelming as big cities tend to be.
A typical Friday in the life of Habiba starts off by me waking up to my usual ‘Doha Crew’ group on WhatsApp and 99 per cent of the time our breakfast plans have already been decided – Jones the Grocer, it’s almost never debated and neither is my order: Eggs Benedict! Afterwards we head straight to the beach with our icebox fully loaded and snacks to last us till about sunset. Six hours of soaking in the sun later, we head to Wahm for happy hour followed by more shenanigans similar to those of Thursday night.

What’s your secret spot in Doha?
Qanat Quartier beach – is just as nice if not nicer than the popular “Nikki beach” at Tower 30; it’s surrounded by colourful pretty looking dollhouses, lush greenery (a rare sighting in Doha), and the impressive view of west bay. Most importantly, QQ beach is relatively new and still undiscovered by the masses, which means it’s a lot more relaxed and laid back – I realize now that having just revealed my secret, my peaceful haven is likely to turn ‘not so peaceful’, but this secret is just too good to keep to myself... I’m all for spreading the love.
