Bahrain Starts Warming Up… Tony Sidgwick Editor-in-Chief

nd I’m not just talking about the weather, either, although we are indeed moving into that perfect mild period of glorious sunshine, cool breezes and perfect boating conditions that we’ve been looking forward to all winter. Be sure to make the most of it before the summer kicks in and we’re confined to indoor activities not because of the chilly weather, but because of the blistering heat. I’m also talking about the entertainments scene. January and February have been quiet, as everyone recovers from the festive period, but March and April are going to be a whole lot of fun, and it all kick’s off in the first week of March with the Spring of Culture. For those of you new to Bahrain, the Spring of Culture is a highlight of the Kingdom’s annual calendar, bringing a wealth of international music, culture and entertainment for all the family to the country. This year’s line-up is exceptional, too, with

artists like Il Divo, Yanni and Charles Aznavour set to perform, to name but a few. However, it’s not just the Spring of Culture that’s entertaining us this month, as we also have the Bahrain International Boat Show, the return of the Candy Beach party, the Chuckle Club and much more bringing the fun this March. Bahrain’s getting warmed up for the F1 GP weekend in April, so you’d better be getting warmed up along with it!

News from the FACT Penthouse Last month Ali Driver was lucky enough to spend a weekend in Dubai with the luxurious Bentley Mulsanne, which was such a chore for him, we can tell you! Read all about it on p.56... Regional Sales Manager Laura Alvarez also went to Dubai to the launch of the widely anticipated BlackBerry Z10, which she brought back to us to review. Check that out on p. 50... And in the final trip of the month, Editor-inChief Tony Sidgwick travelled to Doha for a musical experience in the amazing St. Regis, Doha, and as you can imagine, he enjoyed it immensely! Check out the review on p. 22.

hose of you who managed to catch the Bahrain Boat Show last year will be very happy to hear that it is back once again this March, bringing with it stunt shows, Naval displays, and the largest fleet of mega-yachts the event has seen to date! Despite the slight setback in last year’s event, where windy weather conditions delayed the event by a day, the orgainsers of the BBSI have been working hard to ensure that this year’s will be the ‘biggest and most impressive’ show yet. Saud Kanoo, the Chairman of Amwaj Islands said, “Bahrain Boat Show International is one of Bahrain’s largest and most exciting events. It has attracted tens of thousands of visitors to Bahrain; many of whom travel from across the region to attend each year. Not only is the Bahrain Boat Show a unique occasion for our island, it also perfectly complements the waterfront developments. Amwaj Islands is proud to be the official venue for the Bahrain Boat Show International 2013.” Held over 50,000 metre-squared 6

Bahrain Boat Show back once more! Returning for its fourth year to Amwaj Marina is the Bahrain Boat Show 2013. Taking place from March 28 to 30, this year promises to be bigger and better than ever... of land, this year’s event welcomes a brand new outdoor show, which is hoping to encourage sporting fans, marine enthusiasts and boat owners to attend. There will also be an exhibition of recreational products including the latest bicycles, sporting gear clothing and camping kit. Throughout the three days, there will be a host of games, stunt shows, activities and even boat trips to

entertain the visitors. Last years saw 15,000 visitors walk through the entrance of the show and, if all goes to plan, this figure should hopefully increase, with a large number of people expecting to head over to the country from neighbouring GCC countries. The CEO and Organiser of the Bahrain Boat Shows, Wael Juju, said “It brings me immense pride

Zara’s Question of the Month

“Is enough really enough?” My battle with dreaded nicotine I still wish, to this day, that I had never started and although we should never regret things in life, this is probably my biggest. Saying that, there is now a light at the end of my smoke-filled, lungrattling tunnel.

After years of wasting my hard-earned cash, I can safely and happily say that I am now a non-smoker. Yes I know I have said this before and yes, I know have failed every single time… but this time is different. This time I want to remain a non-smoker. I remember when it all started: aged 12 and bored in an all-girls boarding school (it’s not all pillow fights you know) I decided to venture out into the woods with a friend and sample my first ever Marlboro Light. Terrified that a teacher would come and discover us, we puffed this cigarette down in four minutes before returning light-headed and reeking of smoke to the classroom. I remember thinking to myself afterwards ‘I am totally cool now’… how wrong I was!

It has been over a month now since I picked up a cigarette. Within four days, according to the experts, all the nicotine has left my body and the idea of wanting a cigarette was a mere illusion. Now I was craving the idea of a cigarette rather than the taste and the feeling. Having spent the past month surrounded by friends partying and enjoying themselves, I now wake up feeling cleaner. My mouth no longer feels like I have been chewing dusty cotton balls all night; my energy levels are up; my bank balance is healthier and, for the first time in years, I actually feel like I am breathing properly. It has been 12 years since I had my first smoke… here’s to the next decade. Enough is definitely enough. n

A Quick Chuckle with Imran FACT sits down with Imran Al Aradi to talk about his show, worst pick up lines, and his most embarrassing story to date.

So, who is Imran Al Aradi?

A full-time entertainer, comedian, radio presenter and DJ. Some doctors claim that to be split-personality disorder but what do they know! What do people best know you for on the island?

As one of the voices of Radio Bahrain. Greatest achievement?

Being able to sustain a living as an entertainer, especially in a country where ‘real jobs’ just aren’t born from hobbies… unless you’re into cupcakes. Favourite song?

‘Everything’ by Lifehouse (we secretly think it’s a Glee song but he wouldn’t admit it). How is life as a DJ?

It’s a tough life. Getting to listen to my favourite songs all day while interacting with a fabulous audience? Honestly, I don’t know how I get through it. Tell us more about your show.

I co-host the Drive-Time show with DJ Mojay every Sunday, Tuesday & Thursday where we discuss various topics of interest and interact with our listeners through social media. I also host the Monday & Wednesday evening shows where I play anything and everything that I believe sounds good. Future plans in Bahrain?

I’ll be starting my own podcast for those who enjoy listening to music online at their own convenience. Most embarrassing moment?

At the mall a child accidently ran into me, I kindly placed my hand on his head to ask if he was okay only to realise it was a very short, bearded man! Worst pick up line?

“Haven’t I seen you somewhere?” We’re in Bahrain man, of course you’ve probably seen her somewhere! How would you like to be remembered?

For my fabulous six pack! 10

Robin S LIVE in Bahrain! 90’s dance sensation Robin S will be performing the smash hit that made her famous live in Bahrain at the Dragon this March…

A song that recently enjoyed a resurgence thanks to a remix by DJs Steve Angello and Laidback Luke, ‘Show Me Love’ originally took the dance charts by storm following its release back in 1993. It has since become one of the best-known house anthems in the UK. Robin S, born and raised in Queens, New York, began singing at the age of five in a church choir. Blessed with perfect pitch and a genuine talent to entertain, she took up vocal training at the age of eight under the direction of the legendary Brook Alexander. At the age of fifteen, Robin went to join both jazz and cover bands in the New York metropolitan area, performing at dinner clubs, lounges, and other venues. These years gave her the experience and contacts that led to her first gold single; the worldwide chart-topping smash and dance music classic, remixed with great success by Stonebridge, ‘Show Me Love’. The success of ‘Show Me Love’ gave rise to collaborations with a variety of producers, including Junior Vasquez, Nick Martinelli, and David Morales. 18

FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

In 1993, Robin was named “Best Dance Artist” at the Billboard Awards and ‘Show Me Love’ received the award for “Best Dance Single.” Robin also earned the award for “Best Dance Artist” at the Winter Dance Music Conference. The hugely popular Steve Angello and Laidback Luke edit of ‘Show me Love’ was released on Ministry in 2009. The edit has been smashing up dance floors ever since, becoming an Ibiza anthem and a staple favourite of world class DJs such as Fedde Le Grand, Sebastian

Ingrosso and David Guetta. A brand new Blame mix showcased on Annie Mac’s Radio One show will ensure the continued success, presence and demand for the one of the best tunes in dance music of the 20 years. Robin will be performing at the Dragon Resort, Amwaj, along with a line-up of local and international DJs. GO: The event will take place at the Dragon on March 22, from 3pm to 11pm. T

he St. Regis Doha has now opened all of its planned venues, from the Gordon Ramsay restaurants to the world-famous Hakkasan concept and the Lebanese Al Sultan Brahim. However, there’s also a raft of musical experiences to be had as well, most notably thanks to Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha, but also the live pianist who graces the Vintage lounge, and the Reggae BBQ nights down by the pool and beach on the through the week . We were invited to the St. Regis for a two-night stay to experience all this for ourselves, and I was more than happy to oblige! I’d visited the hotel on numerous occasions for various launches and events, but had never had the opportunity to actually stay there as a guest. I wasn’t disappointed. I was met at the airport by the St. Regis representatives, who whisked me off into the back seat of a luxurious Jaguar XJ-L for the journey to the hotel, which was a fitting start to the experience as a whole. A purring, smooth and comfortable limousine with shaded windows, ample rear legroom and soft leather seats is a perfect place to refresh with a cold towel and read one of the newspapers provided during the halfhour transfer to the hotel. The Hotel

As you’d expect from a St. Regis anywhere, it is an exercise in opulence and splendour. From the expansive driveway and the vast lobby with its tall, marble pillars to the individual sit-down check-in desks, you know that here they like to do things with an added touch of class. A spectacular addition to the lobby is the vintage Rolls Royce Silver Ghost that sits resplendent on display in the lobby itself. It was built for the famous 1911 Delhi Durbar, one of the biggest Royal ceremonies of Imperial Britain. It then passed through ownership of several famous Rolls Royce collectors before being bought by Rolls Royce of Qatar and

loaned to the St. Regis for display. It’s a truly impressive sight. After a brief check-in, I was shown to the comfortable and well-appointed room. Every room in the hotel is assigned a ‘butler’, who will come and introduce themselves to you once you’ve settled in. They’ll take care of anything for you, from booking tables in the restaurants or treatments in the spa to taking items of clothing for ironing (up to two free, and then you’re charged). The Astor Grill

In the evening, I decided to sample the delights of the hotel’s Astor Grill

restaurant, which is a tribute to New York’s ‘Golden Era’, combining the very best of New York and French cuisines. The menu is a wildly tempting selection for a dedicated carnivore like myself, although the prices are, as you’d expect, eye-wateringly expensive. It’s worth getting there a little earlier, and choosing from the ‘Early Dining’ set menu, which is available from 7pm to 9pm. In this menu, you get three courses for just QR280, as opposed to spending around QR180-200 for a single main item off of the normal menu. And if you think this would be a compromise, then read on to see what was actually ordered: For the starter, I chose the Wagyu steak tartare, which was absolutely phenomenal. The rich flavour of the premium meat was greatly enhanced by a delicate dressing and the quail egg on top, and I enjoyed every last mouthful. For the u FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

main, I had the 180g Australian Angus fillet steak with a delicious horseradish sauce and French fries on the side. For dessert, I had the ParisDoha, a collection of three different ice cream flavours on one plate. Overall, it was an excellent culinary experience. The following day was spent lounging around the temperature-controlled pool in the morning, before heading off into Doha for a photoshoot in the afternoon, and back for a much-needed massage in the Remède Spa. The expert hands of the masseuse worked all the aches and pains out of my tired muscles, before I finished off with a spell in the steam room and Jacuzzi. Feeling much rejuvenated, I went back to my room to prepare for an evening at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Jazz at Lincoln Center

This concept comes from the world famous jazz department of the Lincoln Center for performing arts. With the only permanent venue outside of NY City at the St. Regis Doha, created under the supervision of artistic director Wynton Marsalis, Jazz at Lincoln Center brings world-renowned jazz musicians from across the globe to Doha for two to three-week residencies. The dark, cosy and intimate venue boasts various comfortable booths and tables placed around a stage, upon which the jazz musicians perform. This fantastic musical performance is combined with five-star dining to create an unforgettable experience overall. The menu is strongly influenced by cuisine from New Orleans, where jazz and blues music itself is thought to have originated from. Before our meal, we were treated to such delights as popcorn flavoured with truffle oil (the best popcorn we’d ever had!) and Creole spiced nuts. I opted for the seafood jambalaya, a rice dish something like a spicy risotto originating from Louisiana in the US, whilst a friend who joined me for dinner had the hugely popular beef ribs, which Wynton Marsalis himself said were some of the best ribs he had tasted! Both dishes were, as expected, excellent. 24

Reggae By The Sea

Following our meal, we wandered down to the hotel’s expansive beachfront for yet another memorable musical experience. Normally held at the Oyster Bay & Bar venue by the poolside, the Reggae Barbeque Nights take place every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with live reggae music accompanying the sumptuous barbequed feast served up by the hotel’s grill experts. When the weather’s suitable, the whole Reggae Barbeque relocates to the beach, where comfortable beach tables are set up around a stage, and

you can eat, drink and enjoy the music with the sound of the surf behind you! I strongly advise you to go and catch this experience before the weather heats up too much. The St. Regis Doha manages to accomplish something that not many hotels manage to do. It provides a five-star plus experience, with the quality of service and attention to detail really setting it apart in its class, but it manages to do so without being pompous or stuffy. You’ll enjoy the world-class experience, but you’ll always feel relaxed and at home. It’s not a cheap trip, but if you can afford it, you won’t be disappointed. n

The events scene in Bahrain has taken a serious pounding over the past couple of years. Save for a very small handful of professional and successful organisers, the majority of events in Bahrain seem to be organised by unprofessional and inexperienced cowboys who do more harm than good. One, however, stands out even in a bad bunch…

Bahrain has had more than its fair share of disasters and no-shows when it comes to events – Tiesto and Inna are just two that spring to mind. The recent debacle of the so-called VELD Bahrain festival, organised by Luxury Events, was yet another shameful episode in this sad, sad story of failed entertainment. For legal reasons, we will not mention this individual by name. However, it is very easy to find that out by visiting the various Facebook groups defaming him. We will also say that we all know that Bahrain is gossip central, so in this article we will not print rumour or hearsay, but only the facts as we know them. Here’s the sequence of events as they happened…

On December 9th of last year we were approached by Luxury Events to sponsor an event they were staging called the VELD Music Festival Bahrain. The stated line-up for the event was Basshunter, Adrian Sina of Romanian group Akcent, Alex Mika, Sharam Jey, Clarita Quiroz, and Mr. Sax. Here is the original poster promoting the event: 26

FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

Having had some experience of this events company before, and being a bit dubious about such a big line up, as a magazine we felt we had to at least do some checking on the validity of this event. We contacted Basshunter’s management, who informed us that they were indeed in talks with Luxury Events about coming to Bahrain. While we declined to sponsor the event as we still had some doubts, we felt that was good enough to at least run some editorial on it. So, we printed the story, and that was that. Then, two days before the event, on the 29th of January, we received the following message on our website from 1Artist Music, the management company for Alex Mica and Mr. Sax: “The Romanian label 1Artist Music, which is responsible for the artist’s career of Alex Mica and Mr. Sax, declare with regret that the artists will not be present on 31st of January 2013 at “Veld Music Festival” in Bahrain,

because the company organizing (“Luxury Eventsme”) has not complied its contractual obligations agreed on 02.12.2012. Moreover, the organizer is now using without having rights, the name and image of the 1 Artist Music artists creating damage to our image, so that we reserve the right to sue the organizer. We consider that “Luxury Eventsme” are having big problems with the professionalism and seriousness. Alex Mica and Mr. Sax are expressing their disappointment as they cannot be present in front of their fans from Bahrain and hope for a future reunion in your beautiful and hospitable country.” This wasn’t the end of it, either! The very next day we received an email from Basshunter’s management who we’d contacted before that read as follows: “You emailed me about a show in Bahrain 31st of Jan. This will not happen, the promoter is unserious and never paid or fulfilled his obligations. One of the most unprofessional experiences we have had in our 20 years in the industry.” And when a local DJ contacted DJ Sharam Jey, who he knows, on Facebook, this is the response he received.

Furthermore, the following logo that Luxury Events used to promote his event actually belongs to a world-famous music festival in Canada. (see 1)

NOTEWORTHY

2

1 When we contacted them on Facebook to ask them if they were associated with the event in Bahrain, they had this to say: “We have no association with that at all and are currently pursuing this matter with the utmost seriousness.” As for the event itself, only two out of the original line-up of six artists was ever actually confirmed, Adrian Sina of Akcent, and Clarita de Quiroz. However, even Clarita de Quiroz had a few scathing remarks to make about the promoter… (see 2) This is not the first experience we’ve had with this individual. On September 11, 2010, under his previous company name, Experia Productions, he staged an event called the DJ Mag Exclusive World Tour, with Bahrain’s Best Model (sound familiar?), using the flyer on the right: (see 3) Which bore a striking resemblance to the opposite cover… (see 4) He had actually ripped off the image of three of our Top Model contestants straight off of our cover! Through various other events the Xperia Productions name became so tarnished that it was unable to operate in Bahrain, and seemed to cease activities. However, it was not long before another events company started up in Bahrain called Luxury Events. This new company was being promoted on Facebook by a very beautiful girl called Laura Maron. However, people began to become suspicious when this Laura Maron never actually appeared at any of the

3 LUXURY EVENTS

THIS NEW C WAS BEING OMPANY ROMOTED ON FACEB OOK VERY BEAU BY A TIFU GIRL CALLE L D LAURA MA RON

4 events. Then the following Facebook page surfaced: “I AM NOT LAURA MARON! I DON’T WORK FOR LUXURY EVENTS BAHRAIN!” Do a search for the page to find out all the details, but it seems that Laura Maron was actually Tugba Dogan, a lady working in Dubai, and her images were being stolen and used on a fake Facebook profile being used to promote Luxury Events! There is much more we could tell you, but frankly we don’t have enough room. Those of you who know FACT will know that we aren’t a malicious bunch

who are in the habit of naming and shaming dishonest people. However, we felt that in this case we had to, because this kind of unprofessionalism and dishonesty is only hurting events in Bahrain as a whole. It is because of promoters like this that the public don’t trust events, and therefore don’t buy tickets, making it hard for decent promoters to stage great events. It also damages Bahrain’s reputation amongst international talent agencies. We need to put an end to cowboy events promoters in Bahrain! FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

hotography to me means life… it means telling stories and seeing the beauty in life,” Rasha says. “I love everything raw. I like to show the beauty in the little things that we usually walk by and never notice or give much attention to. There is beauty everywhere and we have to train our eyes to look for it.” At 31 years old, Bahraini Rasha Yousif ’s life hasn’t always been devoted to the art of taking photos. “Although being interested for many years, I was busy with my studies and my career. It wasn’t until 2010 when I decided to invest in my hobby and start to dedicate a lot of time in improving my photography skills. Since then I have become obsessed with it… I read, write and travel just for photography.” After buying her first professional camera before an exchange program to the States, Rasha spent the following months attending workshops and reading up on photography books. “I also started blogging to share my passion and learn from other artists. Blogging and social media in general have

helped me establish a network of followers from all over the GCC and worldwide.” When asked about her style, Rasha replied, “I am very much interested in documentary and travel photography, specifically focusing on culture and tradition. Inspired by the masters of street photography, I pursued this style to freeze passing moments in time and documenting places. I am also fond of multimedia photography and producing audio slideshows to give a compelling story. Street photography to me is a challenge as it is out of my comfort zone – shooting random people in the street is really genuine. I also

love to travel to remote places and discover different cultures. Last year I travelled alone to Zanzibar – I loved the simplicity of the island and its people, even though the island is considered poor and modest.” In Rasha’s line of work, there are thousands of well-known artists to admire. “The person who I consider my mentor and try to follow in his footsteps is Tewfic El-Sewy, a NYC based travel photographer and photoexpedition and workshop leader. He is known for specialising in documenting endangered cultures and traditional ways of life in Asia and Africa. I joined his expedition in India last year and I am planning on attending another one later on in the year.” When it comes to the photography scene in Bahrain, like many others, Rasha described it as ‘lacking support and awareness’. She also went on to say, “We have many photography enthusiasts here but most of them are pursuing fashion and commercial photography. I think social media and apps like Instagram have helped many people discover their love of the art, and with proper guidance, we could witness a lot of talent emerging. Saying that, it takes a lot of dedication and patience to become successful. One needs to invest in self-development. It is also an expensive hobby so you need to find a way to finance it if it is not providing an income!”

Does a picture say 1,000 words? “Absolutely – you can tell many stories in a single photo if it captures the emotions at the perfect time in the perfect surroundings. NEW ALBUMS, ARTISTS, AND AUDIOPHONICS

CHOICE TUNES Kylie Minogue: In her 40s and still going strong, this album proves she has more vocal talent than people give her credit for...

Pop

The abby rd sessions By kylie minogue

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

Recorded at the world famous Abbey Road Studios, after which one of The Beatles’ most acclaimed albums was named, this collection from Kylie is thankfully not a Beatles cover compilation.

In association with Virgin Megastore around the country’s malls

It is, in fact, a collection of some of Kylie’s most successful tracks, re-recorded live with Kylie singing unenhanced by studio effects, and backed up by a full orchestra. Even though Kylie is, by now, a fullyfledged pop icon up there with the likes of Madonna, she’s never been widely credited for her vocal abilites. Which is why it’s surprising that vocally she pulls this off so well! And it’s amazing how much drama a strings section adds to a track like ‘Can’t Get You Out of My Head’, and ‘Confide in Me’ is elevated to dramatic levels almost worthy of a Bond movie opening sequence! More light-hearted, but still enjoyable, is ‘All the Lovers’, which remains as uptempo as the original, despite the classical underpinnings. For Kylie fans, this is an essential purchase, giving a fresh angle to all her greatest works. For non-Kylie fans, it’s an alternative collection of very classy pop that will go well with any sophisticated social occasion.

ORIgin of love

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

MIKA himself describes his third studio album as a ‘coming of age’ work, as opposed to his previous ‘adolescent’ offerings. And this is a pretty apt description by the singer. Less autobiographical, and less infused with his apparent inner turmoils, The Origin of Love sounds like an album by an artist that has come to terms with himself, his fame and his talents as a songwriter. Perhaps this angst added something to his previous albums, however. Origin of Love lacks anything as outrageously catchy as ‘Grace Kelly’, for example. While it can often be quite cheesy, with bubbly disco being the overriding theme, overall this is a well-polished and radio-friendly offering that is in equal parts camp and uplifting. 42

glad rag doll

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

DIANA Krall is a musician widely credited for broadening the appeal of jazz and blues, bringing them to a larger audience. Glad Rag Doll is perhaps the best example of this to date, with a collection of well-known covers from the 20s and 30s sung in her sultry vocals and backed up by a collaboration with Hollywood actor Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire) for the video of ‘When the Curtain Comes Down’. Buscemi replaces Krall’s husband Elvis Costello in his speaking part on the album track. For those curious about the genre, then this is a fabulous introduction. For those who are already fans, then this will make a good addition to your collection, although not a must.

Food & liquor II, pt. 1

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

To make things somewhat confusing, this is part one of Food & Liquor II, which itself is a follow-up to the first Food & Liquor from 2006. In a recent announcement, the release of part two of Food & Liquor II was cancelled, so this this will, in fact, be the only part. Got it? Good. The album itself features the sophisticated, engaging and thoughtprovoking lyrical talents of Lupe Fiasco, which are let down somewhat by unoriginal, lacklustre and simplistic backing tracks that in no way do justice to Fiasco’s lyrics. This is a shame, because if this wasn’t the case, it could really have lived up to its full title, Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, Part 1, and part two might not have been cancelled.

TOP FILMS SHOWING THIS MONTH IN BAHRAIN

ON SCREEN Even with peroxide locks Ryan Gosling will be sure to keep sales up for Fifty Shades of Grey!

The Place Beyond The Pines D: derek cianfrance C: Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, rose byrne, ray liotta

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

Luke Glanton (Ryan Gosling) is a motorcycle stunt rider who turns his attention to robbing banks as a way to provide for and desperately connect with his lover, Romina (Eva Mendes), and his newborn child - an act that ultimately puts him on a collision course with a copturned-politician Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper). This sweeping drama unfolds over 15 years.

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING:

Well one reason is that this shows Gosling (Drive, The Notebook) and Cianfrance join forces once more since 2010’s Blue Valentine. Reckless and unsympathetic, this version of Gosling is one that is hard to shake off, despite the fact he only appears in the first part of the film. Saying that, the handing off to Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook, The Hangover), by no means, makes this film any less captivating. Cianfrance’s picture is split into three parts,

where the story goes from generation to generation, taking surprising turns, even though some are slower than others. Lengthy at two hours and 20 minutes, this crime thriller is a great one for character study. Themes such as guilt, revenge and justice are explored while the supporting characters have been praised for their admirable perfomances. Shame this is too late for the Oscars, especially as Cooper delivers one of his best performances to date. This is undoubtedly a ‘MUST watch’.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone D: Don scardino C: steve carell, jim carrey, steve buscemi, olivia wilde, alan arkin

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

Longtime Las Vegas fave, magician Burt Wonderstone (Carell) and his sidekick Anton (Buscemi) split after their thunder is stolen by guerilla street magician Steve Gray (Carrey). It takes Burt’s original mentor (Arkin) and adoring assistant (Wilde) to get Burt back on track and rediscover the zeal and passion he had for magic as a youngster.

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING:

The cast includes a collection of some of the funniest and talented actors out there (excluding Wilde). For this reason, you could justify parting with a little bit of dosh. Among the three leads, it’s Carrey who is in need of a desperate comeback. Gone are the days of Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber, and although some have labelled this latest comedy as ‘incredible’ this is probably not the answer he is looking for to put the once bankable star’s name back on the map. Saying that Buscemi and Carell are on form... again!

Jim Carrey with the dip-dye effect... not a great look

Dead Man Down

Even after years of success, Dominic Cooper can still only afford Adidas

D: Niels arden oplev C: colin farrell, noomi rapace, dominic cooper, terrence howard

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: Victor (Farrell) is an enforcer to a New York City crime boss who was responsible for the deaths of his wife and daughter. When his boss is under threat, Victor turns detective while also seduced by Beatrice (Rapace) who is searching for vengeance of her own. WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING: After Farrell’s recent film, Seven Psychopaths, it would be a shame to follow on with a shocker. Noomi Rapace, however, has really upped her game and this marks a theatrical debut for director Niels Arden Oplev. With performances from Academy Award nominees Cooper and Howard, this film is leaving us on the fence a little. Maybe have another film as a back up... you never know!

[ SYNOPSIS] Oz the Great and the Powerful, sees a small-time circus magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. After meeting three witches (Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Willliams), he is drawn into epic problems facing the Land and its inhabitants. Oscar must put his magical arts into practice and transform himself into not only the powerful Wizard of Oz but a better man as well.

Stoker is based on a girl called India (Mia Wasikowska), who has recently lost her father. The peace of her existence is upended by the sudden arrival of her Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode). After moving in with her and her emotionally unstable mother (Nicole Kidman), India comes to suspect that this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives. Instead of feeling outrage, her infatuation grows.

Non-Fiction

How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes

title which tells the shocking story of the only person to have been born inside a North Korean political prison and to have escaped and survived. Blaine Harden tells the tale of Shin Dong-hyul as he unlocks the secrets of the world’s most repressive, totalitarian state. Knowing nothing of civilised existence, Shin describes his cruel life within the prison as well as witnessing the execution of his entire family. This harrowing narrative of Shin’s life and escape is one of endurance, courage and survival while also offering the world an unequalled inside account of one of the world’s darkest and most secretive nations.

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

The fact that this book has already won a French literary award and has been published in 23 languages goes to show just how much of an extraordinary tale it is. How Shin survives the brutality of the camp is impossible to conceive. From watching classmates being beaten, his mother and brother being executed to being tortured over hot coals at the age of 13 and suffering starvation for the first 24 years of his life, Shin’s existence on earth is breathtaking. Although the book is short, there is more than enough content for you to appreciate the gravity of the situation in North Korea while also appreciating life as you know it.

While the family struggles to cope with their loss, links between City Hall and the murder suddenly come to light and the case takes an entirely different turn. WHAT’S IT LIKE:

David’s book form of the television series takes you straight into the minds of the key characters. Plots are re-shaped, the conclusion is questioned and readers are gripped on every page. Definitely worth a buy!

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

An exclusive review of RIM’s new smartphone...

BlackBerry Z10 There has been a great deal of hype and fanfare over the launch of the new BlackBerry Z10, with celebrities like Stephen Fry singing its praises before it was even launched globally, and Alicia Keys signing up as a brand ambassador. The global marketing campaign has been colossal, with pre-launches and sneak previews building momentum ahead of the massive global launch last month. We were lucky enough to be invited over to Dubai to take part in said launch, which was co-ordinated via video stream with launches in the US and Asia. Most impressive, perhaps, was the goodie bag containing the Z10 itself, and everyone in the office was scrambling to play with it as soon as we returned. So, what are our impressions? Well, let’s start by looking at the specs. The Z10 boasts a 768x1280 pixel 4.2-inch multitouch display, putting it slightly ahead of the iPhone 5. It boasts 16GB of internal storage, with 2GB RAM. However, storage can be upgraded to 64GB with a MicroSD card, unlike other smartphones, which require you to pay for the more costly option if you want more memory. It’s powered by a dual-core 1.5GHz Krait processor, and boasts a claimed 10 hour battery life in talk-time. So, on paper, the hardware looks very good. 50

FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

As for the user experience itself, apparently, for the dedicated BlackBerry user, it represents a HUGE jump from previous BlackBerrys, whilst still retaining a familiar feel to the operating system, making it god’s gift to BlackBerry users. However, this particular reviewer happens to have never owned a BlackBerry before, so it is, in fact, being compared directly to iPhones and Androids. This is, perhaps, the most useful comparison, as BlackBerry aren’t trying to win over existing users – they’re trying to steal market share from Apple and Android. Initial impressions weren’t great, to be honest. Appearance-wise, it simply looks like a slightly less-stylish version of the iPhone, in that it doesn’t have that flashy aluminium/glass casing, and its screen isn’t as big as the Galaxy SIII. However, the display is sharp and vibrant, and the phone response is very quick and fluid, with no jerkiness whatsoever. Our main reservation was with the OS. It took a while for an Android user to get used to it. There is no ‘back’ button, instead having to swipe your finger up the screen. At first, it was VERY fiddly, and proved quite frustrating until we got used to it. Even then, we didn’t like some aspects as much as iPhones or the Galaxy SIII. Instead of going to the home screen,

It’s a huge jump but retains a familiar feel, making it god’s gift to BlackBerry users who love the brand

TECHNOLOGY

scrolling up from the bottom of the screen simply minimises the current app, where you can either close it, or keep it open and scroll right to the home screen. It boasts a similar app grid display with sliding panels – however, it differs slightly in that when you open an app, or several, you have to manually close them rather than simply exiting back to the home screen. This might be good for people who want to have several tasks on the go, and don’t want to have to exit and re-enter an app whenever they want to do something else. Office document software comes with the phone; you can edit and view .docs, .ppt, .xls files, etc., as well as Adobe Reader, further strengthening BlackBerry’s status as the preferred choice for business users. You’ll see this even further when you look at the apps that come standard with the phone, such as Dropbox, Newsstand, LinkedIn, and so on. Another good app is Print To Go, where you can wirelessly

transfer documents from a laptop to the BlackBerry so you can take important stuff with you, like PDFs and word documents. The Z10 has a LOT of catching up to do with regards to apps – soon all the famous apps will be available for it, but at the time of going to press, the software was still being developed. So it might be worth waiting a few months if you want things like Whatsapp, Instagram, and so on. It’s clear when you use the Z10 what BlackBerry wants it to be, which is the choice for people who want a business phone, but prefer iPhones to Blackberries. It’s for the many people who have both – a BlackBerry for work and an iPhone for social. RIM want their new phone to be both, thereby stealing a march on other smartphones. What the Z10 does very well is give users the best of both worlds. It is THE touchscreen smartphone of choice for the business user. We therefore think it will be a huge success. n

DID YOU KNOW Alicia Keys was one of the A-list brand ambassadors that RIM rolled out to promote their new offering...

It has a lot of catching up to do with regards to apps so we’d wait a few months before splashing out on it

LAB TEST

INDIFFERENT:

“While you can connect most things to it, the single CD player and lack of AUX jack lets the system down slightly.”

Pleased:

“The speakers are massively powerful, even if it is a case of quantity over quality.”

SONY DJ SHAKE SOUND SYSTEM Available: Sony store BD240

This neon monstrosity is the Sony LBT-SH2000, a home audio system whose main selling point is the whopping 2000W output. That’s enough audio power for a small nightclub, so imagine how the neighbours are going to feel! It’s a very simple and straightforward unit – for your money, you get those two massive speakers, and that stereo in the middle. On the stereo, you get four analogue audio RCA ports, two USB ports, one CD player, FM/AM radio and MP3 playback. A glaring omission from the whole setup is an AUX port, which would’ve made connecting MP3 players and mobiles to it much more easy, but you still have the USB ports which should handle most devices. So, let us start by saying the power from this system is immense! The bass literally shook the building and had the windows rattling, and we’re sure that people in the building next 52

FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

door could hear what we were playing when we cranked it up! The sound quality was decent, especially given the levels involved, but you don’t get that crystal clarity you’d find with more premium audio brands like Bose, Harman Kardon and the like. While we’re sure the built-in LED lights on the speakers and stereo will appeal to teenagers and living-room DJs, we couldn’t help but feel it gave the unit a slightly tacky quality. The living-room DJ status is confirmed with the feature of four “DJ-like sound effects including Flanger, Isolater, Sound Flash and Phaser”. It really smacks of rich teenagers throwing house parties and playing at being Tiesto. However, we shouldn’t be too snobby here. At this price, it’s an excellent piece of kit for youngsters or amateur DJs who aren’t trying to be professional, but want to be able to throw a good house party with their CDJ setup. In that case, you simply won’t get more for your money! Another great feature is the USB

recording option, where you can plug in a USB and record directly to it from a CD playing in the drive. You can also select a variety of speaker lighting and colour patterns, to create various lighting effects. The light show creates instant atmosphere for home entertainment. The lack of the AUX jack is a drawback, as is the fact that you can’t customise the system or add speakers. However, if you want a simplistic and user-friendly stereo system that can bring down light aircraft with its sound output, then this is your match. If you’re looking for anything more sophisticated, then no. Good for bedroom DJs, but definitely not pro grade. n

PROS

. Massively powerful. . Can connect most things to it.

CONS

. Lack of AUX jack. . Audio isn’t of the highest quality.

Nespresso Maestria Nespresso store Bahrain City Center. Regular: BD280; grand: BD350

After a member of the FACT team was generously flown over to Dubai to attend the launch of this latest product, we thought it was definitely worth a review as one of our Lab Techs. Nespresso excelled itself, proving to be more than just a coffee brand and more of a market leader. The Maestria range combines impressive engineering with function and form, all inspired by that ever-familiar ritual of coffee preparation. Available in retro red or dark grey titanium and made completely of aluminum, this nifty new machine fits, pretty effortlessly might we add, into any and every home, while bringing a professional touch into your kitchen. Its streamlined appearance adds a nod to retro bar style and the ‘hands on’ controls affirm that Nespresso are pulling out the stops to reinvent their definition of delicious coffee. During the launch, Nespresso presented two models of their latest product: the Maestria and the Gran Maestria. The first doesn’t feature the Aeroccino but does integrate a steam wand, allowing you to froth your own milk the way a typical cappuccino machine does. Meanwhile, the glorified Maestria features an integrated Aeroccino for easy automatic milk frothing, with not one but four settings for hot milk, cold milk, stiff froth and velvety froth. The larger model also has the additional function which pre-heats the cups, just in case you or your guests are fussy drinkers. The best thing about both of these machines is that they are tailored to fit into our modern lives. A wraparound cable storage section under the base means that it can be tucked away (not that you would really want to hide a machine such as this); there is a large capacity water tank of 1.4 liters and a capsule container that can hold up to 14 capsules and it even has a light warning

that tells you when they need descaling. It is energy-saving, too, as it powers off after nine minutes of inactivity. Plus, the Maestria can also be set to be compatible with hard, medium and soft water. On top of all this, Nespresso has once more collaborated with design studio Andree Putman to create the perfect tools required for a barista. For the ultimate cup of coffee at home, this is what you need. n PROS

. Nifty, fashionable and functional . Easy-to-use and energy-saving

CONS

. (If we had to be picky) it is a little pricey.

ALI DRIVER SAYS THAT

“The Bentley Mulsanne is like a luxury ocean liner on wheels!” Ali Driver spent the weekend feeling much less like an English country gentleman than the stable boy who stole his car…

56

FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

TECHNOLOGY

This picture, taken on my Samsung Galaxy S3 at the top of Jebel Hafeet, is the only evidence of my epic journey...

L

ast month, I went on a journey. No, an ‘odyssey’ is perhaps a better word to describe a weekend spent in a Bentley Mulsanne. It is a car that adds a sense of grandeur to even the most mundane of drives, so you can imagine what it added to a six hour jaunt through the Emirati desert and up a winding road to the top of a mountain range. The Bentley Mulsanne is the flagship luxury saloon in the prestigious automaker’s range that replaced the Bentley Arnage. It is a colossal vehicle, weighing in at well over two tonnes, and being five-and-a-half metres long and almost two metres wide. It is, as you’d expect, the absolute epitome of luxury and British stateliness. Take, for example, the generous lashings of Birds Eye Maple veneer covering any surface that wasn’t already adorned by leather or chrome – it must add a lot of weight to the already hefty car, but it also adds such a touch of class. Bentley were generous enough to give me this behemoth for a weekend during a recent visit to Dubai. A whole weekend, in Dubai, with a Bentley… the potential for ‘blingery’ was endless! So, I picked it up from the Habtoor Motors Bentley showroom in Dubai Marina on Thursday morning, and commenced to drive. I accessed the very competent and user-friendly navigation system, and selected a random route that took me out towards Sharjah, and then a sharp turn southwest straight through the middle of the desert to Al Ain, where a turn further southwards took me to the foot of Jebel Hafeet, and the start of one of the best roads in the world… literally! u

The stunning attention to detail is one of the many factors that make this car so incredibly opulent. And despite its colossal size, it’s surprisingly agile and jaw-droppingly quick, handling high speeds with minimal fuss.

FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

57

TECHNOLOGY

As I got further out into the desert, Dubai 92FM began to fail on me, and the cheesy pop synths of Katy Perry, Will.I.Am and Britney Spears began to crackle and fade. Scrolling through the stations available revealed that the only station that reached us was Abu Dhabi Classic. Now, you’re talking about Ali ‘Rock of Ages’ Driver here, but as the sounds of the strings and woodwind sections of some unnamed composer boomed out from the awesome 14-speaker sound system, I began to find it strangely fitting. This is a Bentley after all. When in Rome, and all that… So, I settled back, with the cruise control set, and a long, undulating road slicing through the vast and scenic Emirati sand dunes and mountain ranges stretching out before me. With only minimal input on the steering wheel required, the Bentley wafted me along in a cloud of comfort and serenity – the windows open, the sun shining in a blue sky, the gorgeous weather blowing a cool desert breeze in to the car – sublime! Then my journey brought me to Al 58

FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

Ain, and past it to the start of the worldfamous Jebel Hafeet Mountain Road. This glorious stretch of tarmac winds its way up the mountain for almost twelve kilometres, rising 1.2km along the way. It boasts no less than 21 steep turns and three lanes of immaculate tarmac, and is widely considered to be one of the greatest driving roads in the world. Well, where else would you take a Bentley? In actual fact, this giant luxury limousine is not the perfect car for this trip. A BMW M3 or something like that would be much more fun. However, it was an interesting exercise to find out how the Mulsanne hauls its considerable bulk along a twisting road like this. The results, to be honest, are very impressive. Despite its massive size and weight, the Bentley handles with an agility that defies the laws of physics. Going uphill, the massive amounts of power from the 6.75L twin-turbo V8 ensure that the two-tonne car never feels sluggish. In fact, overtaking trucks in short distances is a doddle, which is perfect for those twisting English country lanes.

The interior is an exercise in luxury and splendour, like travelling first class on the QE2

TECHNOLOGY

The famous Bentley ‘Six and Three Quarters’ engine puts out 530bhp and a whopping 1050Nm of torque, and comes with a story of its very own. One of Britain’s most famous engines, it has been in use in various stages of development since 1968, making it one of the longest-running V8 engines of all time! The first thing I fell in love with was the dynamic cruise control, especially in the speed camera-ridden UAE. The best way to avoid speeding tickets is to set the cruise control at the speed limit, and forget about it. The Bentley will expertly maintain two car lengths (which can be adjusted to three, four or more) between it and any car in front at all times, making everything so effortless. You do not drive a Bentley Mulsanne - it chauffers you, regardless of whether you’re the one holding the wheel or not. However, as I returned to Dubai and began to cruise round the city, it soon became very apparent to me that I do not suit this car. Maybe, just maybe, if I stopped wearing un-ironed t-shirts and scruffy jeans, I could pull off the Continental GT. If premiership

footballers can drive then, then so can I! The Mulsanne, however, is a different story. This is a car for English gentry and European aristocracy. It’s a car for people who like to display their wealth in an understated manner. I’d even go as far as to say that it might not be ostentatious enough for many in this region, where bling is king. So, I generally elicited a few nonplussed stares when I climbed out of the Mulsanne in the valet drives of various hotels and malls. There’s no doubt about it – you need class to pull off this car. I didn’t care though – not one iota. Because I was enjoying myself, a lot! The sheer elegance, the opulence and the power just overwhelm you. As you can imagine, the comfort levels are supreme. It drives as it it’s wafting along on a cloud – practically no vibration or noise from the road makes it into the car, resulting in an almost eerily silent interior. Even at higher speeds, there is a calmness and tranquillity inside the car that’ll honestly fool you into thinking you’re only doing 140km/h, when in

actual fact you’re doing something more like 180! However, at a hotel we shan’t name right now, an unfortunate incident with a valet service soured the whole experience somewhat. When I took that car back from the attendant, it wasn’t until I’d returned to my accommodation with a friend that he suddenly pointed out something rather unpleasant: a huge scratch that went halfway around the hugely expensive alloy wheel! I think, at that point, I must have resembled Edvard Munch’s The Scream. “NOOOOOOOO….” This led to a rather awkward episode back at the Habtoor Motors showroom on Saturday. They were politely unimpressed with my explanation, but were good-natured enough to wave it off in a “These things happen” kind of way. It did, however, teach me a valuable lesson: There are only two people in the world you can trust with a BD150,000-odd car - you, and your chauffer. Because you are the only two people in the world who will really care about how close your wheels are getting to that curb! n FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

ALI DRIVER SAYS THAT

“The Mini Coupe keeps up the brand’s tradition of having a unique character and enjoyable driving experience.”

Our Mystery Motoring Expert, Ali Driver, takes the latest incarnation of Britain’s most famous compact car for a spin…

T

he Mini Coupe is an interesting one from the brand. Minis are already touted as small, sporty compact cars, but have always traditionally been hatchbacks. A coupe is a compact two-seater sports model, and if you had asked me how they would have combined the two concepts two years ago, I’d have been stumped. But, that’s exactly what they did, 60

FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

and this is the result – the first twoseater production Mini ever made (if you don’t count the John Cooper Works racing models, which are based on the hatchback, but with a roll-cage in the back instead of a back seat). The Mini Coupe adds a further touch of sportiness to the Mini line up, but how so? Well, the Coupe is based on the chassis of the Mini Cabriolet, but

“The Mini Coupe keeps up the brand’s tradition of sporty characteristics.”

TECHNOLOGY

with only two seats there is a much bigger boot space. The windshield is angled more sharply than other Minis, and the roof is 29mm lower, making the Coupe more streamlined and aerodynamic, and therefore theoretically quicker. The standard Mini hatch already boasts very sporty driving dynamics, but because the Coupe only has two seats, and that slanted rear window and lower roofline, the centre of gravity is lower and the weight distribution is more centred. When combined with the Mini’s current design of all four wheels being pushed towards the corners of the car, this potentially makes for some very nimble handling. The Coupe is powered by Mini’s plucky 1.6l inline 4 cylinder engine, which has a power output of 122hp and 160Nm of torque. It doesn’t sound like much, but in a compact and lightweight car like this, it goes a long way. We can talk facts and figures all day, but the most important aspect of ANY Mini is the driving experience. So, is the Coupe as fun to drive as other Minis, and perhaps more significantly, is it better? Well, it’d been a while since I drove the Mini Cooper S – over two years, I think – but I can definitely say that the Coupe retains that fantastic sporty feel that has always made the Mini so popular amongst driving enthusiasts. The steering is very precise and responsive, putting the car exactly where you want it to go. It grips the road like a limpet, cornering with an impressive level of agility and very little roll, making it a hoot to drive. When you are throwing it around, it does indeed feel very balanced, with understeer exactly when you expect it, and oversteer right when you want it, and it’s very easy to manage both with only minor touches to the throttle, brakes and steering. The Mini Coupe I drove was nippy, with that plucky little 1.6l engine pulling it along at a reasonable pace, but it could do with a little more punch. I’d recommend opting for u FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

TECHNOLOGY

higher specs like the Cooper S with the turbocharged engine, or even the Mini Cooper SD or John Cooper Works if you’re looking for serious driving thrills. From the inside, it looks like Mini have made a serious effort to glamourise the brand a bit – the interior has a more premium feel to it than older models, with much more gadgetry, a new infotainment screen nestled in that big centreplaced speedo, and generally more chromey bits all over. I only had one major gripe about the Mini Coupe, and that is that the visibility isn’t great. Because of the lower roofline and rear hatch design, the Coupe has blind spots a mile wide, and you really have to twist your neck to check before changing lanes or merging with traffic. Visibility out of the rear window is limited too, especially when the spoiler goes up. While I had fun in the Mini Coupe, I have to say that if I was going to buy one, I’d buy it for the driving experience over anything else, and in that case, the manual version of the Cooper S or Cooper SD would be my model of choice. n

Update your offduty wardrobe with this fun and amusing t-shirt by New Look. What’s not to love? Pop colours and a catchy slogan make this a garment that exudes a hyper magnetic force full of boyish charm.

TOPMAN

The brand is known for taking uninteresting wardrobe staples and uplifting them through print and colour. With it’s graphic repeat print and colour scheme, this tee is a winner.

H&M

Board shorts are the new summer staple, so give your legs some room to breathe by embracing the shorter shape. We’re loving this pair by H&M - their simple design is elevated by the topical leaf print.

KENZO

Entirely minimalist in their design, these loafers by Kenzo make a statement of their own through their overbearing clinical simplicity.

KENZO

Taking us on a Safari adventure with their spring/summer 2013 showcase, Kenzo captured the untamed nature of Thailand’s wild life. Our favourite stand out piece is this colour-blocked jacket.

H&M

Socks & sandals were met by much controversy, as this fashion faux-pas made an appearance on runways from London to Milan. Find this leather pair in H&M.

Modern Day Edge Inspired by young, creative entrepreneurs around the Middle East, Muna Yateem is a fresh, quirky and talented new designer. Zara de Haldevang manages to catch a moment of her time to find out more about her brand, Haraka. Muna Yateem may only be 26 years old, but her wealth of education and experience are two achievements to be proud about. She told us “My interest in fashion first started when I was doing my masters in Urban Design in London. I went to go and see an architecture exhibition of Zaha Hadid, and she had designed a handbag for Louis Vuitton – I then realized that the lines between architecture and fashion are blurred and the only difference is a matter of scale.” Inspired and influenced to pursue her passion, Haraka was launched in 2012 – a design brand encompassing a range of products including caps, bags, t-shirts and watches. Why the name Haraka? Muna said “Haraka is an Arabic colloquial term that my friends and I always use. It means something that is different, fun

and comical – this is exactly what I wanted my brand to be.” Each of the items are colourful and affordable, while all representing different moods and styles. When asked about the response so far in Bahrain, where she is currently based, Muna said that, “Everyone has been so supportive here – I love meeting new people and seeing them enjoy my products… it’s been a lovely experience. The most rewarding part is seeing my designs come to life. To see a print on a t-shirt or a watch go from 2D to 3D is amazing.” Muna finished by adding, “One thing I have learnt being a designer is that anything is possible and achievable – it takes a lot of hard work and dedication.” n GO: Haraka products can be ordered on the online shop www.haraka.com. To get more involved with the brand’s plans, follow them on Twitter (@myharaka) and Facebook.

othing is quite as important as making sure your house really is a home. Whether you take the minimalist approach or you prefer that there really is no limit to accessorising, the latest products from @home have options for everyone. Maybe this is the incentive you have been waiting for! Named ‘Ole’, the vibrant, bright and cheerful new collection takes global and local inspiration and creates the ultimate laid-back look. Splashings of colour dominate the latest trend while the concept is based on the idea of collecting treasures from around the world and building an exciting and individual sanctuary. Inspired by countries such as South America, Spain and Morocco, the colour palette and materials consist of burnished metals, where silver, gold, rattans, coloured glass and stoneware are used to add that extra touch. Other key elements of the collection include the use of woven rattan and rope that tie in the element of natural living. The Noodle House Seef Mall, New Wing (Tel: 1766 6353) Price: BD10-15 per person

T

he Noodle House has been open in Bahrain for some time now, but it’s only recently that it has started serving food at lunchtime, which is why, when we passed by one afternoon and saw that it was open, we took the opportunity to drop in for lunch. Already a hugely popular concept in the Gulf, with outlets in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Oman, the Noodle House serves up quality Far East Asian cuisine, and serves it fast, making it an ideal place to visit for a very enjoyable quick bite to eat. We have to admit, we went a little overboard after perusing the menu, but we wanted to be thorough! For starters, we had the Chilli Beef Ribs, and two options from the Dim Sum menu – the Chicken Siew Mai, and the Duck Gyoza. For the Dim Sum, you have a choice of four, six or eight pieces, though in deference to sensibility, we opted for four each. The Dim Sum wasn’t the best we’d ever had, though it wasn’t bad at all, 80

FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

with soft and moist wraps covering a tasty filling inside. However, the Chilli Beef Ribs were phenomenal, coming boned and sliced in an amazing marinade that had us polishing this dish off in record time! ASIAN EXCELLENCE For the mains, we went for the Chicken Lettuce Wrap, which is chicken in a sauce that comes with pieces of lettuce to scoop it up in, and crispy noodles to add as desired. Then we had the Beef Teriyaki and a portion of Steamed Broccoli in Soy Garlic sauce. All three dishes were absolutely delicious, and despite the ample portions, there was very little left at the end of the meal. The lettuce wraps are a novel and tasty dish where you’re given the chicken and noodles separately, and you scoop them up in lettuce leaves. The Beef Teriyaki was also very tasty, with just the right amount of sweetness flavouring the generous chunks of medium-cooked

tender beef. And finally, the Steamed Broccoli was a very healthy side dish perfectly flavoured with the soy sauce and garlic that comes highly recommended. The Noodle House isn’t a fine-dining venue. However, it’s certainly not junk food either – the sheer quality of the dishes, service, atmosphere and dining experience elevates it far beyond ‘fast food’ to a great choice for a quick, convenient and pleasurable meal. n [ THE BILL ] 1 Chilli Beef Ribs

THE CHEFS TABLE

I

Chef Kundan Kanwar Lanterns

After months of anticipation, the new branch of Lanterns is officially opening its doors to the public this March. The FACT team heads to the Adliya venue to sample some delights, straight from the chef himself. 82

FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

f many of you foodies out there are as obsessed as we are with the Lanterns food, then you will be somewhat overjoyed to hear that there is a newer, larger and very impressive venue in the heart of Block 338. Generously and artistically decorated with ornaments and décor flown in from the West coast of India, the wooden furniture and handcrafted candlesticks are a fantastic added touch to really making this the ultimate Indian fusion dining experience. Once through the doors, you’re transported to another world, leaving behind the hustle and bustle of the city life. The food, however, is something to rave about and the very reason the FACT team was here. Chef Kundan Kanwar is the man behind the meals this month. Having lived in Bahrain for 15 years, he has spent 18 years of his life perfecting the art of cooking. Born and raised in Uttaranchal, the Northern Himalayas, Kundan told us “Cooking was my childhood dream… my absolute passion. Cooking is very traditional in India, my mother is a great cook and it is a passion passed through the generations.” First up on the menu was the Quinoa Salad made with lettuce, crabsticks, cherry tomatoes, edamame, avocado and quinoa in a lemon herb dressing. What strikes us first are the exquisitely fresh flavours; each layer of the salad has an element of surprise, whether it is the sweetness of the tomatoes, the creaminess of the avocado or the light texture of the quinoa. One of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, this is also one of the healthiest. What really makes this dish is the lemon herb dressing, strong enough to taste on every mouthful yet subtle enough to let the other flavours explore your taste buds. For the main course we are treated to Murg Makhani, a mogul dish of boneless tandoori chicken finished in a tomato butter sauce, and Rogan Josh, a spiced mutton curry cooked

THE CHEFS TABLE

“All the ingredients and food were freshly prepared, and the difference was evident in the delicious taste!”

Kashmiri style. Two classic Indian dishes we’ve had many times before, we are nevertheless overwhelmed by what we’re given. The chicken is cooked perfectly and the tomato butter sauce is creamy yet light. The mutton smells and tastes incredible, whereas the spices tantalise our senses. So what is Chef Kundan’s secret to the perfect curry? “Dedication. You also have to love cooking. The greatest mistake is that people don’t take enough care with their food. All the meat comes from India, I don’t marinate it overnight and I only use fresh ingredients. For the rice, I only use the best basmati rice and make

sure I use all the necessary measures – that’s how you achieve the perfect bowl of rice!” We are also treated to the Lantern’s Olive Naan. “It is made from sugar, salt and flour with a dash of baking powder and the mixture is then left for two days before cooking,” said Chef Kundan, “It is then cooked for five minutes.” Fluffy, flavoursome and wonderfully topped with rosemary and black olives, this is definitely the best naan we have had on the island in a long time. Although the official opening of this new venue has not yet taken place, the restaurant is open to the public, where diners can go and sample the Friday buffet. Every week Chef Kundan changes an element of the menu to keep it exciting. In a few weeks time, the roof lounge will also be open, where you can enjoy music, all the dishes of the menu and a huge array of drinks. The space can also be booked for private parties. Even after one visit to the new Lanterns, it is safe to say this spot has huge potential. A great contender for the perfect post-work drink, this really is the epitome of fine, affordable and enjoyable Indian dining. n

“The new venue is a new-and-improved version of the old, with outdoor areas and a rooftop lounge.”

FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

I really want to change the way women think of fitness. The lifestyle here is hard to change and people need to realise that they need to push to see results. Research is so important as well. Exercise can become an addiction and the only way to realise that is to start! Biggest mistakes people make?

People expect to see results straight away. Patience is key! Fitness isn’t just about losing weight… it is about leading a healthier lifestyle. What evaluations do you

conduct on a new client?

I study their medical and exercise history as well as finding out their goals. I also do mobility, stability and posture evaluations before I make them a unique programme. People find it hard to get help from just anyone, I just hope that people feel they can take the leap to trust me. How are you different from other PTs?

If you saw me training, you would see how dedicated I am and how much my life revolves around it. I want to be a symbol for women in Bahrain – unfortunately fitness is a tough industry to succeed in in Bahrain. Quote you live by?

DANIELLE LOVE Age 26 Nationality British Favourite Sport Rugby Mission To improve the quality of people’s lives through natural movement, food and lifestyle.

Explain your relationship with fitness:

I have been sporty from a young age, when I used to play netball, football, hockey and rounders at school. I started playing rugby aged 17 and continued to at uni. When I moved back to Bahrain I started playing at an international level. With all the intense training, supplement and nutrition suggestions, my interest in how I can improve my strength, speed and fitness became so important to me. Why fitness as a career?

I have only worked in the fitness industry for 12 months now – it was the best career decision I have made. I believe the industry is flooded with so many different ways of getting

into shape and being healthy; so much so that people forget that being healthy and fit is much more than just exercise. I want to help people find a balance between lifestyle and nutrition in a way that works for them. How can mental outlooks be changed?

Exercise should be fun. Commonly people look at exercise as something painful, hard and boring. Everybody is different so you need to find a form of exercise you enjoy. As humans, we were born to move, so we need to move away from ‘I can’t’, realise that attaining goals is no easy task and with time, it is amazing what you can achieve. Biggest mistakes people make?

People take on too much too soon. To have a healthy lifestyle, you may need to make a lot of changes to your current lifestyle – changes don’t happen in a day, sometimes they take weeks, months or even years! Those looking to improve the quality of their lifestyle, I suggest changing one small thing at a time. Besides weight loss, why do people

seek your help?

There is a stereotype that only deconditioned people require a PT... this couldn’t be further from the truth. People have PTs for other reasons such as improving fitness, longevity, a wedding, injury recovery etc. There is also a connotation that personal training is expensive but it all comes down to priorities. How much would you spend on a night out? Quote you live by?

‘Little by little the cup is filled’. Best workout song?

Rolling Stones “Brown Sugar”, “Street Fighting Man” (at the moment). Worst Vice?

Chocolate. I love it even though I can go without it. I usually have Lindt 70% Dark Chocolate. Greatest achievement to date?

KARIM ARAFA Age 27 Nationality Bahraini Favourite Sport Weight Lifting Mission To change the misconception of training and to educate people.

Explain your relationship with fitness:

I first got into fitness during my mid years in University. I was overweight as a teenager and, although I managed to lose some weight, I decided to take it further to try and achieve better body composition. I made all the beginner mistakes by resorting to countless hours of cardio and restricting my calorie intake. Eventually I took it upon myself to educate myself properly… it is now my passion! Why fitness over other professions?

I didn’t choose it; it found me. It isn’t often that someone finds something they would love to do for a living day in and day out. Seeing how fitness changed my life for the better, I realised that whenever I am in the gym, nothing else matters. Biggest mistakes people make?

People lack patience. They also 92

FACT BAHRAIN MARCH

underestimate what it takes to change your body. If I had to choose one though, it would be nutrition. What evaluations do you conduct on a new client?

Each of my clients receives a tailormade program. During a sit-down session I find out about training history, injury history, family history, their motivation and their ultimate goals. I also put them through a few movements and drills so I can identify any mobility issues or weak points. How are you different from other PTs?

You only have to read my blog to find out why (thefitnessgrail.wordpress.com). This is not a job to me. Training with me is not just a matter of coming in and pushing weights. I pay attention to every detail my client needs and I use the time to educate my clients about how to make an overall lifestyle change. Quote you live by?

‘You can never out-train a bad diet’. Worst Vice?

Anything with peanut butter. Greatest achievement to date?

My accomplishments so far… and making a difference to people’s lives. GO BOX thefitnessgrail@gmail.com

I was a fat kid, good at sport but had to lose weight to do justice to the talents I was born with. When I was 16, I started to take rugby seriously and was handed an academy programme by my coach. I then fell in love with training and fitness. Why fitness over other professions?

I always wanted to be a teacher so I can help educate children. The fitness industry is messed up and I am here to try and fix it. I am here to help people who have been misguided. Biggest mistakes people make?

Not setting realistic goals. Society has warped the outlook on fitness. There is also a serious lack of weight training. It has proven to increase bone density and is one of the best ways to lose body fat. How can outlooks be improved?

It isn’t about motivation. People should exercise everyday; it should be a part of your routine. The sessions where you stick at it, those are the ones that help you progress. Consistency is a huge benefit. Nutrition also plays a huge factor. Everything in life doesn’t have to be perfect but why waste your time trying to out-train a bad diet. What evaluations do you conduct on a new client?

I assess their whole life, from their livelihood to their aims. I only do four to six week blocks with clients. If you feel better after that, then you have advanced.

Drink chocolate milk for fitness! Heavy workouts burn a lot of energy, and you lose a lot of vital minerals through your sweat. So, an unlikely remedy has been suggested by experts... There are two primary things you are trying to do after exercise: recover and encourage the muscles you have worked to become stronger. It turns out, drinking chocolate milk might be just the thing! A bit of protein provides the most effective way of doing this. If you drink milk, you are getting a consistent source of protein, along with water and electrolytes. The chocolate provides useful carbohydrates and even the relatively high sugar content is an acceptable means of restoring lost energy. bnl is the first Bahraini Life and Healthcare Insurance Company, and your best choice for savings, protection and health insurance.

They don’t know enough about insurance as a topic, and the guy who’s selling the insurance may not explain it properly. So sometimes, it doesn’t meet whatever needs you had in the first place. If you don’t understand it, don’t be frightened to ask a question. And if you’re not happy with the answer, ask again. And if you’re still not happy with the answer, go ask someone else! Get a second opinion for insurance if you want to. You’re the customer, and you want to know that you’re buying the right option for you.” Choose Health “You can definitely save yourself money if you look after your health. For example, if you do contract diabetes, you could say that you’ll pay around 50% more for your health insurance, and in some cases it might be more. Any chronic condition will increase the cost of your health and life insurance, so it’s important to stay fit and healthy. Just yesterday I picked up something about how obesity has been linked to osteoporosis. A 10% increase in your BMI actually causes a 4% decrease in the Vitamin D in your body, which increases the chance of osteoporosis. So again, it comes back to having

a healthy and active lifestyle, and controlling your weight. Some simple steps to maintain good health are: eat well, exercise daily, watch your blood pressure, watch your BMI, get up and move around a bit at regular intervals at work, get at least fifteen minutes of sunshine a day, as it’s a source of Vitamin D, and get at least eight hours of sleep each night.”

“It has been proven that sitting for six hours or more a day increases the risk of early death from all causes by an average of 30% for women, and 18% for men, even if you exercise!”

Choose Honesty “Having diabetes, high blood pressure, or some other chronic condition – all of those affect the price that you pay for your life or health insurance. And it’s not worth being dishonest and trying to hide a condition, because if something happens and you make a claim related to that condition, your insurance could be void and the company won’t pay out. The rates are calculated on averages, and if you’re below average health, then you need to be charged at the appropriate rate, otherwise insurance companies would lose money.” Choose Life! “We all work to live, but we shouldn’t live to work. Long hours and high stress might initially seem like a guaranteed way to ensure success and wealth later in life, but you might not be around to enjoy it! It has been proven that sitting for six hours or more a day increases risk of early death by an average of 30% for women, and 18% for men, even if you exercise! We spend most of our lives sitting down, whether you’re sitting at a desk or sitting watching TV or sitting in your car, or sitting having dinner. The human body was not meant for being inactive for such a large portion of the day! Sitting has an effect on your metabolism, your posture, your core muscles, and everything. For example, financial professionals are notorious for long hours, high stress levels, and often lack of exercise, so there are a high amount of claims from that profession. Be sure to maintain a good balance between your working and private life.” n For information, call 1758 7333 or log on to www.bnl4life.com.

Why choose a personal trainer? Our Health Columnist is fitness guru Craig Heslop, Founder & Coach of Tribal Fitness, who believes that a more back-to-basics and natural approach to living is the key to a healthy lifestyle…

Personal training is a fantastic tool to achieve your personal goals and optimize your fitness levels. Bahrain has a multitude of professional personal trainers, so there is no reason not to find a good one. The beauty of one-on-one or small-group training is that a good trainer will tailor the programming to your specific goals. They will also push you to achieve your potential without beating you down mentally and physically. If you are looking for a personal trainer, I will offer some advice. Firstly, ask what the relevant education the trainer has. It is worth spending extra money on someone who has got the right credentials and smarts to help you succeed. Secondly, when was the last time they up-skilled? At Tribal Fitness, our coaches take a professionally accredited course at least every four months. It’s sad when trainers do not re-invest time and money into their own career as this industry is always changing. When you meet your potential trainer for the first time, do they Craig Heslop, sit down with you and ask about Founder & Coach your history, past injuries, current of Tribal Fitness activity and your aspirations? If your trainer does not ask how do they know what you want to achieve? A good coach will create a professional relationship based on trust and show that they care! Lastly, does your trainer screen how you move? It is a pet hate of mine that some trainers place conditioning on to poor movement patterns. Why would a trainer ask a client to squat multiple times with a weight if they cannot squat safely in the first place? At Tribal Fitness we film our clients and show them how they run, squat, crawl, lift and jump. It’s a big wake up to some people that their movement is inefficient and ultimately has led to past injuries. My personal trainer, Kane Soulsby, is helping me to achieve my goal of being a technically good boxer with the conditioning that goes with the sport. I believe in personal training so I use the service myself! Personal training is an investment within yourself that should enable you to improve both your health and fitness. Oh brilliant, this means more cars on the road and crowds of people everywhere…

We review the new BlackBerry Z10 smartphone in this issue. Are you:

a. a. a. b. b. b. c. c. c. decide that McDelivery is the only number you will be saving in your phonebook this month?

WOOOHOOOO! At last, some events we can look forward to that don’t end up like the VELD Festival.

jump in head-first, book a ten week programme and then change your number after week 1 as your muscles ache too much?

after Valentine’s last month, your wallet is still weeping so it’s hermit time for at least six months.

completely indifferent. You’re quite happy with your Galaxy S3, and who needs BBM when you have WhatsApp anyway?

steadfastly in the Apple Cult? “We are Apple. There is only Apple. There can be no other. Apple is our redemption and our saviour, for all time, for ever and ever... iPhone.”
