EDITOR’S LETTER

Everyone expresses themselves through colour. From the moment we pick out our clothes in the morning, to the shade of lipstick or manicure that we decide on, to the time we put on our pyjamas at night, colour factors into how we convey emotion, identity and meaning.

SS18 has been witness to a flourish of rainbow colours, the coveted yummy pastels and some pretty powerful 80s power dressing. Not to forget the OTT texture and fringing that has dominated this seasons catwalk. Designers definitely raided the Pantone colour chart for the explosion of primary colours and we are all for the uplifting style at Ohlala Headquarters. Fear not if you shy away from such bold colours as you can take a more subtle stance embellishing a pastel shade or accessory to ease you into this season.

Architectural HEIGHTS

What inspired you to create your eponymous shoe label?

I wasn’t necessarily inspired to start a brand. The only reason we started United Nude was because it was the only way to get the shoes made. Back then I would have been happy for somebody else to produce my designs, but everyone, including Miuccia Prada, was saying that my designs matched nobody else’s signature and that therefore I needed to start a new brand for it.

I started designing shoes because I was looking for love while being heartbroken over a girl and scaled down architecture to the its vulnerable scale, that of a women’s foot.

Since the launch of United Nude’s first shoe named Möbius how have your architectural designs evolved in your SS18 collection?

I’ve always considered myself an architect, and not a shoe designer. I’ve learned a lot about shoes over the years but I would not introduce myself as a shoe designer. Growing up in an architectural family, my uncle and father are both architects - I learned how to look at architecture from a very young age. When we traveled we always visited architectural sites. My designs are mostly about structure, materials and other spacious and architectural concepts. So it is hard to say how it continues to influence or evolve in my work. So how have they evolved? Well, we are making more comfortable shoes than on day one as I have learned more and more about shoes, but it is still architecture for the foot.

You have already collaborated with a whole accolade of renowned designers such as Issey Miyake, Zaha Hadid and Iris Van Herpen. Is there anyone else you would love to collaborate with?

There are many people I would like to collaborate with, but I could not name one person in particular right now. As a designer, I am interested in working with people that are among the best at what they do, and that are doing something very different from what we are doing. Here we can join forces and make something cool and new together. Since moving to LA, I have become more interested in other creative fields: film, music and art. So I could see myself, or UN as a company, collaborating with people different from where we come from. We have collaborated with fashion designers and architects, but crossing over into other creative fields is the next logical step. Do you feel a certain level of pressure to maintain such forwardthinking designs, especially since Möbius initiated the union of industrial design and fashion?

No, I don’t feel the pressure in creating forward-thinking design, but I do feel the pressure in creating good and useful design. I think that it is one thing to create something that is very special and beautiful and quite another to create something useful and comfortable - while at the same time still remains interesting. I think there is a much bigger challenge in smaller margins than extremities. It is the task of us as designers to make the world a better place and a more beautiful place. If we can combine the beauty and better in one, mission accomplished! Where do you gain your inspiration for your innovative designs? Pretty much anywhere. It usually comes to me when I’m in an inbetween space like when I am traveling. I always bring a notebook or

sketchbook. Mostly when I am by myself, it’s like looking into a mirror of my own brain and which has functioned as a sponge of everything around me, and it is at this self-time of quiet that I squeeze the sponge and ideas pour out. The more critical and difficult part is how to figure out which is a good idea and which is not worthwhile and this is not always easy. Sometimes I cancel ideas which then later someone else coming up with the same or similar idea becomes a big success. This type of self curating doesn’t always lead to the biggest successes. Your initial designs were praised by Miuccia Prada and Sergio Rossi before you met Galahad Clark, a seventh-generation shoemaker and member of the Clarks dynasty, and launched United Nude in 2003. If we were a fly-on-the-wall what would we overhear at said meetings? There were so many different meetings, but some in particular: Miuccia Prada had invited me to meet their creative director Fabio Zambernardi in Milan. At that meeting he was very positive about my designs, but also said again that I would need to start a new brand for them. They had actually discussed whether they would help me start a brand, but they were very busy, as they had just taken over several companies including Jill Sander and Helmut Lang, so they didn’t do it. Two years after that in 2001 while visiting Sergio Rossi at his Milan Showroom he had asked for a foot model to try on the Mobiüs prototype shoes. He spoke to his son Gianvito Rossi, who was also present in our meeting, in Italian: “my father really likes the concept of your shoe and he wants to help you guys in whatever way you want.” At this point they offered us two options, which were to work with their factory, or to meet with a shoe expert he worked with. We then drove for three hours and met their expert, the great Maurizio Martignago, that same day. Galahad and I had many conversations, mostly on how to start a brand: how to do and not do things.

You are currently showcasing a Vegan Collection. What made you formulate such an ethical addition to your portfolio?

Though leather is a very beautiful material that has a certain characteristics that no other materials have, I’ve always had difficulties with using leather. For instance, I have never owned a leather jacket, as I don’t feel comfortable putting my body in someone else’s skin. While manmade materials are improving, I’m happy and as soon as possible, to one day become an entirely vegan brand. With my background in architecture – I’ve always grappled with and been cognizant of sustainable, and ethical issues in the design, and making of things. Wherever possible we try to incorporate elements of the sustainable and ethical in all levels of the design process.

What is your plan for the near future, and where do you hope to take United Nude in the next five to ten years?

Besides being a global brand UNITED NUDE is also really a lab for experimentation. I would like to see it further mature since we are in my eyes a very experimental and young company. I would like to make better products that people can enjoy while we can inspire where we can. We have always been considered an inspiring brand. In design schools we are often used as an example of how boundaries are pushed and crossed between different creative disciplines.

Tell us about your biggest challenge that you have faced with United Nude and how you have overcome such difficulties

We started the company as a global brand, which I think was a mistake. It was always difficult to represent the true core of the brand in so many places, at the same time, while we were also experimenting and finding out who we are and what the brand is. External forces such as the economic climate have been turbulent, especially with the fall and rise of the Euro has very much affected us. Also, the digitalization of retail has been a huge challenge, which would have been easier to adapt to the challenges if we were a newer brand. We constantly have to reconfigure how we operate due to the digital revolution of this age and time.

How would you describe someone who wears United Nude shoes?

Our Customers are in general strong individuals with clear individual taste and a clear appreciation for design. They can see further than trends, hype and fashion with an open mind. Our goal is to create the best design we can, and not be about trend, and our wearers can appreciate this.

Your shoe designs are very futuristic and unique, with such an artistic flair being present would one find them practical? Something that may not look practical on first glance may be more practical than it appears, through the functionality. Our designs can be futuristic and unique but comfort, wear-ability, and the longevity of the footwear are very important to us - so we try to balance the two, always! If our shoes cannot be worn, it is not really a shoe but an art piece, which we also sometimes make in collaboration, or as a special project. The biggest challenge lies for us and I think for any designer, to create original meaningful products that are useful, sustainable and comfortable.

HIGH IMPACT

JOIN THE GLITTERATI

If there is one major trend that truly dominated for all four fashion weeks, it was all things that sparkle, shimmer and glow. Full on glittery eyelids were on show along with stick-on gems, tiny sequins, jewels and even rhinestones. If this is all a bit much for you but you’d still like to dip your toe in the glitter trend then I’d recommend the new glitter highlighters from brands such as Cover FX which will give you a gorgeous glow without being too over the top. For the rest of you that are game to try this trendgo ahead and unleash the inner child in you.

HAIR ACCESSORY REVIVAL

One of our favourite trends for this season was the return of glamorous hair accessories. They were huge on the catwalks for SS18, with everything from logo scarves wrapped around ponytails at Lanvin to Sixties-style headbands at Miu Miu and there were even prim and proper hair clips worn above each ear, school style. Gucci’s bow headband is on our musthave list along with D&G’s embellished numbers.

SHORT AND SWEET

Been considering a chop? Well now is the time. Moschino and Giorgio Armani created faux crops with some clever clipping and pinning and short styles were more popular on the catwalk than ever. The casting of short-haired models were used to really create an impact that short is back and this androgynous style is sure to be seen everywhere this season.

THE NEW RED LIP

Red lips never go out of style but this season they’ve taken on a fresh new approach with modern applications and fresh finishes. Matte geranium coloured mouths with soft edges are what to go for with a slick of gloss over the top.

THE GRAPHIC CAT EYE

While cat eye eyeliner is normally reserved for AW, it was a super strong trend across most shows including bold graphic looks, exaggerated blue flicks and feline flicks. Lanvin really stole the show with graphic shapes on the outer eyes.

NAIL ART IS BACK

Hair and make-up often take the focus backstage, but nail art was back in full force for the new season. There were logo manicures, crystal embellishments and ombre glitter talons at Tom Ford. This is definitely one of the more time consuming trends to get on board with but certainly one of the most fun.

NO MORE CONTOURING

I personally could not be happier to see this ridiculous, Kardashian led trend leave with its tail between its legs. Make-up artists gave it the boot and instead opted for blush applied to the apples of the cheeks. Softly blushed beauties were seen walking the catwalk at Simone Rocha while Pat McGrath introduces classic blush draping at Valentino in shimmering pink while over at Chanel a bold red hue was used.

HELLO BRIGHT EYES

It wouldn’t be summer without something bright and electro-pop eye make-up in orange, pink and blue will be seen everywhere this season. Look for highly-pigmented pastels in blues, greens and fuchsia. The bolder, brighter and more eye-popping, the better.

A new season is the perfect excuse to shake up your beauty look and try something fresh. SS18 beauty and make-up trends all pack a real punch so its time to get on board and standout from the crowd. Angela Beitz explains

NAILED IT

Everyone keeps talking about the new trend in nails and most are still trying to understand what a gel manicure is really all about. If you haven’t tried this type of manicure and are debating whether or not you should, then you definitely need to visit one of Dessange’s leading nail technicians - pronto!

You should know that a CND Shellac manicure is the only non-gel manicure on the market. I’ve heard a lot of conversations and concerns over the years with my girlfriends surrounding the illusion that it is difficult to remove or indeed the misconception that it has ruined nails, leaving them cracked, thin, and frail. This is all in the hands of your local nail salon and it should never be anything short of a wonderful experience. Results of a CND Shellac manicure should last for about two weeks or longer - no chipping or fading (or excuses!). I keep hearing “they don’t have any good colours” as a way to justify the burden of previous visits to other salons where chipped polish seems to be a regular occurrence. Alas, with professionalism like this at your fingertips Dessange are your new best friend and those cringeworthy manicures are now short-lived. They even know how to pair the colours together to create new ones that satisfy your

style, and that’s just the beginning, nail art is an option toono matter how simple or radical. The process goes like this: after a dry manicure—pushing back cuticles, shaping nails etc, one of their technician prepares the nail surface. They then layer on a base coat and you have to place your hands under a CND (UV) lamp. Next comes two (or sometimes three) layers of colour, after each you “cure” your nails in the lamp and then comes the final layer of top coat, which is cured once again. Some may argue that receiving this type of manicure isn’t good for your overall nail health, but I would argue that the cost, convenience and time that it saves me is 100% worth it. Being a true “girl on the go” in my editorial position I’m frequently in front of my clients and I need to keep my nails properly maintained. Unlike many other franchised names, Gatsby Beauty Lounge is the love affair of one Bahrain-based mama who has a passion for providing ladies with the best in beauty care. We went along for a haircut, mani-pedi, massage and threading – all professional services made to help you wind down and relax. Gatsby Beauty Lounge is the first Med Beauty Spa in the Kingdom of Bahrain and it provides all aesthetic enhancement including Body Contouring and Skin Rejuvenation, Laser Hair Removal and Hair and Beauty services. There’s a whole side dedicated to being a luxury nail salon with all certified staff.

On our visit, it’s the friendliness of the staff and the efficiency of the services that really stand out. One chat with the hairdresser and she gets to work; what is really awesome is that unlike many other places we’ve visited, this lady actually LISTENS to what you want and does just that. And we all know how hard it is to find a good hairdresser – Gatsby has just introduced us to ours!

Moving onto the massage, the room is beautiful and the therapist really knows her stuff. The pressure is just right and the knots in the back (a result of everyday stress) were worked out with deep strokes for total relaxation. One small downfall is that you still get a tiny bit of noise from the other side of the door – but is it enough to stop you from enjoying the massage? Definitely not!

Next up were the nails. In particular, it’s the pedicure that has us in total bliss. The therapist rids our soles of dead skin, followed by a mini scrub and lotion, all whilst cleaning, shaping and polishing the nails to leave you with envious tootsies. For the manicure, we chose a neutral shade which was applied meticulously once the nails had been groomed – our hands felt fresher and lighter than when we’d walked in. To finish off, the face threading – a service that can in some instances be very painful if done without the right skill and expertise. However, at Gatsby, threading was fast and precise with the aid of rose water to cool the skin afterwards.

You’ll be offered a plate of yummy biscuits and a choice of hot or cold beverage during your time there – a gesture that really made us feel at home! And when you’re not eyes closed and cosy, you can admire the beautiful 1920’s inspired décor with glitzy chandeliers, funky mirrors, black and white tiling and a party-esque interior that will make you feel enveloped in pure luxury from start to finish. Ladies, it’s time to book your next day of indulgence and Gatsby Beauty Lounge is ready to welcome you!

This sense of splendour struck me immediately as my car was whisked away by valet, as I entered and was offered a refreshingly fruity trio of welcome drinks which resembled a heavenly elixir to kick start my detox experience. The hotel takes a holistic, bespoke approach towards guest wellbeing which was evident as I checked in painlessly and sashayed to my executive room. The platter of treats presented to me reflected the attention to detail and personal knowledge of every guest. This ensures that no two stays are alike but are customised to indulge the cravings, style and eccentricities of guests from arrival to departure.

The highlight of any visit to The Westin is the Heavenly Bed which has a reputation which proceeds it. Aside from this the ambient lighting, crisp tiled edges in the heavenly bathroom and thoughtfully selected accessories from the signature White Tea range are designed to create a sense of mindfulness and bodhi whilst ensuring that all necessary links with the outside world are at hand should you require them. The team at The Westin make a conscious effort to create a home away from home.

Despite my reluctance to leave such a haven I was keen to sample High Tea on offer at Mezzanine Lounge. The setting is a spectacle itself with floor to ceiling windows giving expansive views from the velveteen, wing backed arm chairs. Hourglass tables supported the

All of the menus at The Westin are impregnated with superfoods which create vitality and wellbeing through their philosophy of food synergy – pairing certain foods to increase their health giving benefits. Should you wish for a more intimate setting for your group or perhaps a family gathering then private pods can be created with the addition of lavish drapes within this same space.

The hotel services and ethos also extend to business clientele through the state of the art meeting and function rooms. Whether it be a board meeting or large catered event the team are able to offer the same bespoke service as they would in any other area of the hotel and can guarantee ‘clutter free’ meetings with state-of-the-art audio visual support.

Following a meander by the outdoor pool , taking in the sun deck, comfy sofas and pristine white towels on offer to all guests I eagerly made my way to the Heavenly Spa for a facial and Heavenly Spa Signature Massage. Once inside the soothing aromas and soft lighting immediately had a calming effect as I changed into a warm fluffy robe and arranged myself on a lounger in the relaxation zone. My treatment began here with a cleansing detox water. My facial involving cleansing and exfoliating treatments preseeded my signature massage. The masseuse expertly sought out every knotted fibre and stress point with no direction from myself. Her techniques had the effect of a car journey on a small baby, lulling me into a meditative sleep. My overall two hour experience passed by sickeningly quickly.

As I emerged from my dosing state disappointment at my Spa experience ending gave way to excitement at the prospect of dining in the renowned Furn Bistro that evening. It is refreshing to have a flagship restaurant within such an auspicious venue serving high end Khaleeji cuisine as opposed to favouring the flavours of other nations. The bakery churns out expertly crafted Sambusak and Manakish whilst also paying homage to pastry staples such as croissants and strudel. Wishing to stretch my culinary boundaries I decided to try the salmon recommended by my knowledgeable and welcoming host. The platter was returned to kitchen almost as clean as it had been before service – not a single morsel left. I have since struggled to think of a fish dish which has impressed me as much throughout my various dining experiences. Praise indeed.

I am sure there is no need to comment upon how well I slept however to coin a phrase, it was ‘Heavenly’!

FURNE ONE has touched a chord with the region’s fashion elite with his Avant Garde label ‘Amato’ and continues to be humble in his approach to life.

JAYNE GREEN sits down with Furne One and talks everything from style to his dog Duchess, and everything in between.

Good Morning Mr One! We’re firm favourites of Amato here at Ohlala Headquarters, with many a front cover being adorned with your eccentric and awe inspiring designs.

Tell us about the process from when you initially think of a design to then allowing it to come to fruition?

I find the entire creative process very fulfilling as it is exciting. From conceptualizing ideas and sketching the design, to the sewing and finishing, it still amazes me how a simple imagination can come to life. Being able to create a dress that people appreciate the most rewarding experience for any designer. Moreover, what matters is that you create something that speaks to your audience and make them see your vision.

The beginning is always a good place to start... do you remember when you first became aware of fashion, or at least when “style” became something you gravitated towards?

When I was a young boy I would watch my mother and grandmother get all dressed up. I would watch them put on makeup and fix their hair. I was fascinated with how their dresses, shoes and accessories transformed them into glamorous queens.

Tell us about the recently launched SS18 collection Amato Luxe.

Amato Luxe’s SS18 collection is inspired by the beauty and grace of ballet masterpieces such as Swan Lake and Nutcracker.

The Middle East market is very fashion-driven. How does it differ in comparison to other fashion cultures around the world?

I think the fashion industry in other parts of the world move a little too fast. I find that the audience in the Middle East don’t fall for fads and trends that easily. They still go for the classic and timeless styles with only hints of what’s trending in fashion.

What is the ultimate trend for you that will always be timeless?

Individuality.

How do you relax?

I like to relax in bed watching movies and tv shows with dog, Duchess.

What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to the fashion industry and how do you overcome some of the challenges this industry brings?

People who chase fashion trends just to fit in with the hype. You have gained international recognition as a creative director. How do you feel that you have achieved this? It never fails to surprise me when a famous celebrity wears Amato. I mean, who wouldn’t be? Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Shakira, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce and J.Lo (to name a few) are huge names and they have tons of other designers to choose from right at their fingertips - but instead they chose to wear Amato by Furne One. It makes me proud and honoured, of course.

Tell us what the Amato woman stands for. My collections aren’t for the faint hearted woman, but one who is comfortable in her skin; her ensembles are but a foil to reflect her inner persona. Amato’s signature collections are seen as timeless modern classics that are collector’s items. Meshing cultures, using the region’s rare arts, layering it with eastern and western elements, I create unique pieces for my urbane and globalized clients, reflecting their personal and cultural identities.

How do you define your unique creative flair amidst the fashion world and how do you stay relevant?

Dubai has definitely changed in the last couple of years since I came. The women have embraced a brand new style - and as a designer, it is important that you know how to look outside of your own comfort zone. The challenge is to learn to adapt to the changes of the fashion world but still remain true to your aesthetic. It is essential to create a balance between the designer’s artistry and creativity with the business side of it all.

You’ve previously stated that the achievement that you are most proud of is providing employment for your staff. How do you remain so humble amidst your success?

I’m fortunate enough to be given this amazing platform where I can influence, inspire and be a good role model to the people who look up to me. My mother also taught me to value peoples’ trust and respect by keeping your feet on the ground.

As we approached the ART Rotana Hotel the weblike exterior of woven steel is breathtaking and makes a bold statement regarding your experience here.

Whether a staying guest, a casual diner or visitor to the Friday Brunch, as I was, you can not fail to stand for a moment in awe as modern art meets engineering at it’s best. The hotel boasts impressive views of the Arabian Gulf combined with state of the art facilities and a veritable Louvre of design pieces throughout. Had I not been eager to sample the buffet I could have idled away the afternoon meandering through the various lounges and public spaces.

Choices restaurant plays host to the Friday Brunch Extravaganza where those with a voracious appetite and love of multiplicity will find great satisfaction. The setting is contemporary and modish with dashing grey and black furniture punctuated with explosions of citrus greens and oranges which are refreshing and vivid. The views afforded by the floor to ceiling windows and the option of outdoor dining make it the perfect brunch base. The atmosphere is relaxed and the Cuban vibes of Soneando, the resident band, compliment this perfectly.

The vast selection of soups, handcrafted baked goods and crisp salads cater for those wishing for something lighter, healthier or simply something

to whet their appetite. I followed the familiar aroma of masala spices to the corner dedicated to all things Asian. It boasted pots of creamy curries and delicately spiced meats and fish. The restaurant boasts a ‘children’s zone’ where younger diners can work up an appetite and expand their minds before being tempted to try the freshly baked pizzas and global delicacies.

The carnivorous carnival of meat drawing you towards the roast station is without a doubt the most spectacular centerpiece. My amiable host explained that the chefs are happy to prepare many cuts to your own exacting standards before serving you at your table. The fresh fish and crustacea is plentiful and can also be grilled to order. In addition there is a live cooking station and a variety of freshly prepared, sumptuous roasts loaded onto white platters for you to devour at your leisure .

The plethora of styles of cuisine is also extended to the choice of desserts, mocktails and fruity artisanal elixirs served to compliment every dish. The brunch experience at the ART Rotana is as much a feast for the eyes as it is the appetite. No limits apply at Choices whether it be the age or range of clientele or the vast array of exquisite fare.

FRIDAY BRUNCH AT DOWNTOWN ROTANA

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the vibrant downtown area lies the peaceful sanctum of the Downtown Rotana. The brand has become synonymous with understated elegance and cutting edge design blended to create a refuge for those of all ages and agendas. The Friday Brunch offered at Flavours on 2 will set the standard for 2018.

Walking into the restaurant you are met with what appears to be a piece of contemporary art but on closer inspection is more likely a bold statement about your experience here. It reads ‘Eat Well’ and I was in no doubt that this is exactly what I would do. The stunning backdrop for this brunch is filled with luxuriant fabrics and clean white lines. The boxy chandeliers suspended above diners pay homage to the tassels of the 20’s Flappers and add another injection of colour. The promise of Fresh Crabs and Juicy Oysters would doubtless be enough to draw anyone in to Flavours each Friday. Needless to say the grandiose station, awash with the finest claws and crustacea nestling in a sea of crushed ice makes a resplendent centre piece. Each item is thoughtfully labelled with its source and or origin. Condiments and fresh produce, perfect for adorning the seafood dishes punctuate the

baskets and barrels reminiscent of the finest of Breton seafront stalls selling their ‘Fruit de Mer’.

The brunch has a phenomenal main act but just as impressive in terms of quality is the melange of brunch staples available at the other stations. As many of us are not seafood connoisseurs the team at Flavours has taken great time to hand pick dishes from around the globe which will tantalise and delight. Thirst quenching fruit concoctions and zesty elixirs are served alongside more familiar brunch refreshments . The dessert stations are a colourful cornucopia of fruity, creamy cups of deliciousness and delectable dainty pastries.

The Downtown Rotana hopes that your visit will be extended beyond Brunch to take time to enjoy full pool access and supervised children’s activities. Perfect for a long overdue catch up amongst friends or family, an intimate afternoon with your better half or a chic setting in which to mull over business, Flavours will rise to any occasion under the umbrella of their ethos that ultimately you will all ‘Eat Well’ !

TRAIN DIFFERENT

On arrival, as I scoured the venue, my eyes fell upon their Arm Bar Café . Full of pre/post workout meals alongside smoothies and energy drinks. This seemed ideal for a novice such as myself who doesn’t understand what all these fitness models are referring to when they refer to their ‘macro’ intakes.

When choosing a health club, there are a plethora of components to think about. From equipment to classes to first impressions, it can be exhausting trying to provide clarity with oneself on the journey you’re about to embark on - or at least, trying to regain any ounce of motivation. However, when I walked through the entrance of UFC Gym as a potential member and scoured the gym for enlightenment as to why I should stay the welcoming aura wrapped me up instantaneously. The will from within was there, yes, but, after an eternity of allowing oneself to overindulge without exercising, time had most definitely taken its toll - mentally and physically. My muffin-top protrudes as an almost gluttonous trophy, yet has now transitioned into somewhat of a constant reminder that complacency is not an option anymore and this is what provoked my first steps into UFC.

Even the most minute details can influence a membership decision and I’m forever over analysing everything and anything in life therefore I wasn’t going to take this decision lightly. I’ve been one of those people who’ve purchased a gym membership and allowed it to only drain my bank balance. Thoughts passed through my cluttered mind; can members find parking or do they have to roam around the parking lot for 10 minutes? Are the windows and glass glistening or covered in dust and fingerprints? Are the floors in the lobby clean or covered in dirt? Are front desk staff welcoming or do they seem preoccupied? These are just a few of the things people might notice when making such a decision and I was happy that all these commodities were executed perfectly - no excuses for turning back now!

I must have been looking like a lost puppy when a familiar face popped up, Ashwathy, (@askthestylecouncil), who is a self-proclaimed convert to UFC Gym, who kindly offered me a quick tour and I was truly grateful for her assistance. As we walked around, I was in awe of how many ‘normal’ people were working out. My biggest concern was that I was going to walk in and be faced with a barrage of people pumping iron, as if there lives depended on it. All shapes and sizes took centre stage on the advanced equipment and I could feel the pull of excitement as I allowed myself to fantasise that this was day one of the journey to becoming a healthier version of myself.

I’m a bridesmaid this year (and a bride next year), so, overwhelmed with the anxiety of not looking, and most importantly, not feeling good, has gave me some long overdue inspiration. I’m in that inaugural state where I feel that if I don’t do something now about achieving the body I want then I will never do anything. I really want to push the boundaries when it comes to my body and I want to be part of the development that is coining the phrase ‘strong not skinny’. Hey, I just want to feel confident in a bikini - is that too big of an ask?

After years of denial regarding exercising I decided to switch up my regime and discover what UFC Gym situated on the 3rd floor of Al Raya Mall, Juffair had to offer, and, I’m pleased to say I’m unexpectedly feeling motivated to train like a beast to look like a beauty.

I was amused that in one corner there was a mixed group taking a class, not that there was anything particularly funny about such a scene, but, rather that everyone was enjoying themselves which came as somewhat of a shock. I later found out that this was Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) one of the fastest growing combat sports in the world. This martial art focuses on ground fighting and submission. There is something to whet every individuals appetite, from their mixed or ladies only ‘Bag and Skills’ schedule (Boxing, MMA skills, MMA Conditioning and Kickboxing), Group Exercise Studio (Power Yoga, Body Pump, Body Conditioning, RPM and LBT), Daily Ultimate Training or indeed Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

The atmosphere is truly electric and there is a real sense of comradery at every level. Every trainer I passed by smiled and said hello. I was introduced to one of their friendly female personal trainers, Nicola, who I was instantly in awe of. I spoke candidly about my body issues and what I would like to achieve from future visits to UFC. She didn’t laugh, she didn’t mock my goals and honestly, I don’t know what I was expecting, but, she truly instilled the confidence that I was lacking in myself that I can absolutely achieve my targets through their support and guidance. Look in the mirror… that’s your competition.

THIS VEHICLE IS UNTIL THEY ARE BEHIND THE WHEEL.

Is there anything better than driving around in a brand new Ferrari Portofino? Yes, getting to drive a brand new Ferrari Portofino in its home country. We at Ohlala got the opportunity to fly all the way to Bari in Italy to put what some are calling one of the very best Ferraris ever created, through its paces.

After our arrival in the capital of southern Italy’s Puglia region, we were treated to a classic Italian lunch and one too many espressos, before being whisked away to our awaiting experience. We soon found ourselves standing, in awe, in front of what can only be described as a magnificent mechanical marvel.

The very first element of the vehicle to catch our attention was the colour. The launch colour, Rosso Portofino, was developed especially for this model and was named after the charming Italian town of the same name. The second element, was everything else we laid our eyes on. Every contour and line of this magnificent sports car has been designed with aerodynamics, performance and dazzling beauty in mind. It does

not matter which angle the body is viewed from, it is a true work of art.

This car’s aggressive style is perfectly complemented by its exquisite features and one does not need to drive it to know that it is fast. It tells you with its very presence what its capabilities are. It boasts a two-box fastback configuration never before seen in a coupé-convertible with a retractable hard top.

Two side air intakes sit at the edges of the large central grille and the shapely bonnet comes complete with two vents to evacuate heat from the engine compartment. A crease line runs from the edge of the bonnet along the front wheel arch and across the door. A new headlight assembly has been handsomely designed to follow the crest line of the front wheel arches, whilst muscular flanks sit perfectly to break up the solid look of the vehicle. The positioning of the tail lights allow for an extended spoiler that has been optimised to cut the overall drag. In truth, we could have stood all day admiring and discussing the flawless presence of this Ferrari, but before long, we just had to get inside.

DIVA Drives

As the hardtop was folded back in an admirably precise fashion, taking 14 seconds from start to finish, the interior was revealed to us in all of its glory. We were told the luggage compartment can hold three decent sized cabin trolleys with the roof up and two when it is down. The rear seats are also surprisingly spacious providing any passengers with a comfortable experience. This car has been carefully designed for everyday use and the designers have ensured its practicality.

Only the finest materials have been used throughout the interior and the design is flawless with the handcrafted finishes accentuating the class of this vehicle. 18-way adjustable electric and heated seats ensure one is comfortable at all times. The Portofino’s Human-MachineInterface (HMF) includes an instrument panel and dual TFT displays. The infotainment system can be operated via the 10.25” touchscreen located at the centre of the dash and is very easy to navigate. The front passenger has been gifted with a capacitive display that is directly linked to the main screen and provides all car speed, gear engaged and rpm related information. A truly immaculate layout.

What we really wanted to know however was, how does she drive?

As we engaged the ignition, the soul shaking sound of the V8 turbo engine reverberated down our spines as we turned onto the maze-like roads of Bari. With 441 kW of power and 760 Nm of torque, we had more muscle available then we could have used in ten test drives. With a top speed of 320km/h and a 0 – 100 km/h time of only 3.5 seconds, we did our best to keep a cool demeanour. We needn’t have worried though as this car has handling, braking and grip second to none. We always felt in complete control and even managed to catch a few of the city sights along the way. The 11th-century Basilica di San Nicola was one of the most beautiful blurs we have ever seen.

By the end of the experience we had to agree with what some had already said. This sports car, in our experience, is one of very best every created by Ferrari or any other car manufacturer for that matter.

MINDLESSNESS?

MISS OHLALA EXPLORES THE “M” WORD WHILST TRYING TO KEEP AN OPEN MIND.

First let me admit that I am a self-confessed cynic. Buzz words like mindfulness continually popping up in my social media feed just make me want to practice *mindlessness. As for those mindfulness adult colouring books sold at every train station and airport, aren’t they just colouring-in books for adults who have zero art skills and have tired of Suduko?

According to some experts, active meditation (“M” word alert) focuses attention on simple tasks that require repetitive motion. Isn’t doing the washing up or watching Netflix just as therapeutic and arguably a better use of time? If you want to colour, knock yourself out, but please don’t call it meditation or therapy in front of me.

I realise that I may come across as hypocritical given the majority of my hobbies involve creating things such as painting and sewing. I acknowledge that some form of artistic or creative outlet is good for lowering stress and anxiety levels. But can mindfulness colouring books really lead to psychological nirvana?

I decided to put aside my cynicism for one moment. According to Wikipedia (the font of all knowledge), mindfulness is “the psychological process of bringing one’s attention to experiences occurring in the present moment, which can be developed through the practice of meditation (oh dear, that “M” word again) and other training”. Leaving the “M” word aside, it follows that paying more attention to the present moment, to ones own thoughts and to the world around us, could improve one’s mental wellbeing.

Would I pay money for a mindfulness therapist however?

Definitely not. Possibly because I expect they would make me sit cross legged to meditate and I haven’t been able to sit like that comfortably since I was four. Also perhaps because of a deep-seated scepticism for such therapies. Although if I am willing to pay for yoga and Pilates sessions, why should meditation or mindfulness be different?

Then I read that mindfulness is simply about “being present in the moment”. When put like that, I can associate with it. Case in point, my three year old recently pointed out to me that I wasn’t concentrating properly on being Princess Anna (we were play-acting at the

time, and she had assigned herself the role of Elsa from Frozen, and I was Anna). She was entirely right. I was zoning out when playing, possibly in order to deal with Let It Go being sung out of tune for the hundredth time. I realised then that it is my responsibility to be more present in the moment if I want to be a good role model for my children. Now I try to put my mobile phone in a different room and really get involved when we are playing together.

As an adult, I always think that I need to be doing something to make good use of my time. If I’m not at work, then I am taking care of the children or the house or answering emails. This month I’m going to make a concerted effort to take time out to just enjoy the sunshine, the park, and sitting outside with friends and family.

Unlike me, children don’t automatically think the worst when presented with a new situation, I’m going to try to be less of a jaded cynic and try to keep an open, positive mindset. This resolution will however likely last less than one day.
